- 0:03MB R Talk. Hey, thanks for supporting our
- 0:06channel by watching and listening Radio dot.
- 0:17Gorilla Yo-yo yo what is up?
- 1:49What is up? Yo this is turnbuckles and
- 1:50stogie spot. I am the host with the most the
- 1:54big dog, the vanilla gorilla, the OG.
- 1:59What is going on with you players today?
- 2:08What's up boys? I'm excited for this show.
- 2:13This is my boy right here we're going to be talking with.
- 2:15Justin, first of all, I'm excited, too, but I mean, don't
- 2:19get up and go to the bathroom while you got a woody, OK?
- 2:25I mean, I don't want your camera to fall the other way and
- 2:28everybody sees what you ain't got.
- 2:31I mean, that's what I heard. But anyways, today's a beautiful
- 2:42day, guys. We are here today to talk to our
- 2:47boy and we are going to bring him on the interview of the
- 2:55week. I'll let you introduce some,
- 2:59Dennis. Hold on.
- 3:03The interview of the week he's brought to you by Jersey Mike's,
- 3:08a sub above. What is going on guys?
- 3:15We can't wait. We couldn't wait to get this
- 3:17guy, I believe, back. Honey was on once, wasn't he?
- 3:20Yes, he was. Go ahead, he.
- 3:24Was on once he's coming back again it's been a.
- 3:26While when we're going to in a room again, he is a an author of
- 3:31failure rules and a good friend of all of ours and we are
- 3:35excited to have the man back himself.
- 3:37I call him ATK Andrew Thorpe. King failure rules.
- 3:43Well. Not only.
- 3:44What's up? Not only is he an author, he
- 3:49owns a he. He owns a company that puts out
- 3:54bands he owns. That he called the record label.
- 3:59Yeah, that too. That's right.
- 4:01That's right. He owns other things, so Andrew
- 4:04I. Know a thing or two about a
- 4:06thing? Or two Andrew, Andrew, Andrew.
- 4:09So. What's up?
- 4:10I want you to tell our viewers and our followers how we all got
- 4:19together and we met. Yes, I was drunk.
- 4:23I did have a that day. I didn't see a thing.
- 4:27I didn't see a damn thing we have as a judge, as far as I
- 4:30could tell. I don't know, listen.
- 4:32We had a we had a great time in AC.
- 4:34We need to get together again soon.
- 4:37But tell everybody how you met OG and you met me and Joe.
- 4:42Yeah, so, well, OG, it was from Johnny Smokes Uncut.
- 4:49Johnny had me on to just talk about the book when it was
- 4:51launching and there was like a little Q&A and that kind of
- 4:54thing. And it was a good conversation.
- 4:56I was like pleasantly surprised some people that kind of looked
- 4:59things up and had some good informed questions.
- 5:02So OG heard me there and I think you had a question while we're
- 5:05on there and then you hit me up after.
- 5:06I don't remember the whole sequence was something like
- 5:08that. Yeah, and then we ended up
- 5:11hooking up in Indiana for the John Daly Folds of Honor.
- 5:16That's right. Is that what it was called the
- 5:17Folds of Honor? OK.
- 5:19Yeah, Yeah. That's.
- 5:21Right. Oh, we had a black.
- 5:23Yeah, I. Mean how did that work out with,
- 5:24how did that work out with the Falls of Honor with John Daly?
- 5:27And then you were hosting the whole weekend.
- 5:30Hey, was it? Listen, I was glad to do it, man
- 5:32it, it was my privilege to be around all those American
- 5:35veterans and those, all those supporters out there.
- 5:38I got to meet great folks, including Andrew out there in
- 5:41person. We had a blast.
- 5:43And after the golf outing, we all went down to the barrel and
- 5:47Blaze, it was called, I think. Yeah, yeah.
- 5:49Barrel. Blaze.
- 5:50Yeah. And we hung out there and then
- 5:52Andrew and I retired back to a different bar for a few more
- 5:55drinks to finish off the night. We had a we had an incredible
- 5:58time. I did.
- 5:59Yeah, Yeah, it was a good time. That was a good time.
- 6:02Yeah. So that was fun.
- 6:04But like tracing it back too, like OG you and I then connected
- 6:08and then I think that the next step wasn't you had me on this,
- 6:11but then you couldn't make it. So I talked to the vanilla
- 6:14gorilla who who looks like he's got I don't know, man, He looks
- 6:17like he's hot. It's hot.
- 6:20He he he's turned Arabic. I'm not sure you know he's.
- 6:22Yeah. And then My Man and then Boss
- 6:28Dog. And then we had, we had that
- 6:30episode, and then we had it wasn't AC, it was Asbury Park,
- 6:33but close enough. Asbury Park, Yeah.
- 6:36What's the name of that shop again?
- 6:38I don't remember the name of the shop now.
- 6:39I can't believe I'm. Forgetting.
- 6:41Yeah, they go simple enough. Or.
- 6:43Something like that. Yeah, and it was a rainy day.
- 6:46The turn out was OK, but it was good enough and some people
- 6:49showed up and had fun and boss dog was wildly excited and a
- 6:52little too excited and his drinking, I think out, you know,
- 6:55kept up with his excitement pace.
- 6:56And I don't know, my mid afternoon.
- 6:58I just I was on the podcast and I look over and vanilla gorilla
- 7:01was ushering him out almost like they needed the boss dog was
- 7:05kind of resisting the the situation, it looked like.
- 7:08And he was he he was not going to go down easily, but he went
- 7:11he went down. So that was a shame, but you
- 7:14didn't miss too much Boston after that, you know, things
- 7:16just kind of chilled out. So you know, it was, it was, it
- 7:19was a good event. It was a good, I mean, I've had
- 7:21better, but it was a good event. And those, those guys at Hasbury
- 7:23Park cigars are great over there.
- 7:25I used to go down there for vacation a couple years ago.
- 7:28It's been a while, but I go there two or three times a year
- 7:30'cause I like Hasbury Park for some reason.
- 7:32I like that lounge. It's a good music scene.
- 7:34A lot of hardcore punk rock there at the independent season.
- 7:37Good shows there like Madball and a few other Madball H2O and
- 7:42I like the beach there. So, yeah.
- 7:44And I always used to get the same Airbnb there with a nice
- 7:47pool and a hot tub. I'm a I'm, I'm a sucker for a
- 7:49good hot tub. So, you know, even in the
- 7:51summer, I don't give a shit. And so, yeah, that was fun.
- 7:54And yeah. And then, then, then we had the
- 7:56Indiana thing and that was cool too.
- 7:59Major Ed, that was the guy, right?
- 8:00Yeah, he was definitely a trip man.
- 8:04He, he definitely is a character.
- 8:05Good guy. I saw him in the airport on the
- 8:07way home and chatted with him for a while in the airport and
- 8:10then we had like one follow up call after that just talking
- 8:13shop and you know, I haven't connected with him.
- 8:15Since well, listen, that brings me that brings me to the next
- 8:19step. So I want to get Majorette on
- 8:22here. I want to get John Daly on here.
- 8:25I got to reach out to myself. But my thing is your book, I
- 8:34can't find it because when I move, honestly, I read it.
- 8:38I don't remember. I had that book I packed away.
- 8:41I had a incident February where I can't remember too much.
- 8:46But here's my thing. When I read your book, I fucking
- 8:51loved it. It's all the truth.
- 8:54And for those that never read his book, you need to read
- 8:59Failure Route. It's a great book.
- 9:02I love it to death. And guess what?
- 9:05That man right there, we'll tell you everything there is and what
- 9:11you need to do or how you should go about doing it so that you
- 9:15don't fail. Like I thought, honestly, when
- 9:19we started this podcast, me and Joey and Dennis, I thought we
- 9:22were going to fail. We're going on five years.
- 9:26That's. Awesome.
- 9:27For listen, in four years we've had everybody under the sun on,
- 9:33so I'm not worried about it. I don't care whether it's
- 9:35wrestlers. Listen, we I want to have
- 9:38somebody around here to paint the fucking mural.
- 9:42That'd be cool. You know what I mean?
- 9:44So people will say, well, you just turn buckles and stogies
- 9:46and wrestling. I said, listen, I run the
- 9:50company. If I want to have somebody on
- 9:52here that's a housewife, I'm going to have her on here.
- 9:56That's the way that works, you know there.
- 10:00We go Real Housewives, the Stogies, the Stogies and
- 10:03wrestling. There you go.
- 10:04There we go. Why not Andrew, Andrew before
- 10:07before we get into your book, I got to ask you, man, it's been a
- 10:10while since we talked. So what's going on currently in
- 10:14your life? Are you what you got any
- 10:16projects brewing or you just enjoying life?
- 10:18What's going on right now are. You still.
- 10:21Questioning 20 kids. No, no, no, no.
- 10:24No 3 kids with the first wife, No kids with the second wife.
- 10:27And I've got a current girlfriend now that we've been
- 10:29with for three years. So I've travelled the world with
- 10:32the ethnicities of my wives and girlfriends.
- 10:33I started off in Asia, then I went to Italy and then I went to
- 10:37Israel and now I'm in Russia. So I've kind of travelled the
- 10:40world with the ethnicities of my wives and girlfriends.
- 10:42So your new your new girlfriend is Russian?
- 10:45She is, yes. Yeah, she's fantastic.
- 10:48Yeah, she's great. So tell us.
- 10:54Tell us. No, I was going to say, I just
- 10:59realized that I I already failed in this interview because I
- 11:02forgot to actually bring a copy of the book here to show on
- 11:05screen. Do you have I got you?
- 11:07I got you brother. I got you man, Bro, I'm not
- 11:12kidding. It is my Bible and I've been
- 11:15reading it more now because my company is just pittered out and
- 11:19I feel like a failure. So every time I feel like that,
- 11:22I'm not kidding, I pick up this book and find a chapter that
- 11:25relates to me. I have looked through your book.
- 11:28I can't tell you how many times I'm I have not read it cover to
- 11:31cover. I don't know if it's meant to be
- 11:33or not, but I am not ready to cover cover.
- 11:36I found the one chapter, it is power path and only 5 pages.
- 11:42You kind of you, you kind of hit everything in one page and it's
- 11:47so powerful. It's your chapter and I got it
- 11:50open right now. Develop bulldog tenacity and
- 11:53create something out of nothing. Those 5 pages are stellar.
- 11:58If anybody goes out there and gets this book, hey, if you want
- 12:02to read the cover cover, go for it.
- 12:05But I would highly recommend you pop open the page 429.
- 12:10It's 5 pages long. You're going to get just an
- 12:14overall idea of this book because it talks about rule #5 I
- 12:20wouldn't say it's the cornerstone of your rules, but
- 12:22it is a powerful part of the rules that you have with Tim.
- 12:27It's a good. Book and #1 failure purifiers #5
- 12:29you, and not your failures like they really, you know, poke you
- 12:32and all the other ones. Well, yeah, yeah.
- 12:34Yeah, very, very good. I love that chapter, my man.
- 12:38And and you, you're a fantastic author, by the way, and I'm not
- 12:43saying it. The blow smoke, ha, ha, ha, no,
- 12:46no pun intended. We're all blowing smoke now.
- 12:49But I'm not a, I'm not a big book reader.
- 12:53And so the book has to hook me. You know, I, I on Page 1 and
- 12:59your book, your introduction to the book alone, hook me into
- 13:02that. And just all of your
- 13:04experiences, your personal experiences, you will get to
- 13:08know who Andrew is in this book, where he, where he came from,
- 13:12who he is, how he got to where he is today.
- 13:15This is probably one of the best self help books I've ever
- 13:20purchased. And I don't know if you consider
- 13:22it that, but I do. Yeah, it is.
- 13:25I mean, at the end of the day, it is.
- 13:26Yeah, Yeah, for. Sure.
- 13:28So tell me, I want to know. I want to know.
- 13:31Do you remember the 5th failure? Do you remember that, that that
- 13:35chapter? Yeah, you are not your failures.
- 13:37It's failure #5 And you're talking about the chapter where
- 13:39I write about Tony Brummel, who was the founder of Victory
- 13:43Records. And he had no college degree,
- 13:47never had a resume, didn't have wealthy parents, started his
- 13:50company on $800. And I think it was 2022, he
- 13:53exited with a $34 million exit. This guy just.
- 13:56And his, the symbol of his record label was a bulldog.
- 13:58He just had bulldog tenacity. He was, he was very well, he was
- 14:03very controversial in the scene because a lot of people thought
- 14:05he really shrewd, ripped some people off this and that.
- 14:08I'm not saying he did. I've talked to him a bunch of
- 14:10times and he is super hard nosed and very shrewd.
- 14:13But the guy did just have that tenacity.
- 14:16And I just love his quote of like, hey, I've never had a
- 14:18resume. I've never had a boss.
- 14:20I didn't go to college. I started this company with
- 14:22$800. Now, of course, like, yeah,
- 14:24that's an anomalous right? That's a Unicorn.
- 14:26Not everybody can do that, obviously, but it's taken that
- 14:29spirit in a whatever level you need to do in your own life to
- 14:32overcome whatever obstacles or gaps you think you have.
- 14:35You know, that this guy didn't have all the, the, the kind of
- 14:38prerequisite advantages we think are necessary to do something
- 14:41great. And he did it anyway, so we can
- 14:43too, right? But it does take that tenacity
- 14:45almost like a, a, a delusional belief in yourself and the
- 14:49ability to go forward even when shit is just breaking and not
- 14:51working and going off course and just having that delusional
- 14:54vision, like, no, I'm going to keep going.
- 14:56I'm going to keep doing this, you know?
- 14:57And so, yeah, that that was like, for me, very
- 15:00inspirational. Yeah, no, we just had our guest
- 15:03last week, Aaron from Las Vegas Cigars.
- 15:08He is, he's, he is the persona of rule #5 Don't you?
- 15:15You can hear it the way he talks.
- 15:17You can hear and every all the information he gives you He what
- 15:21do you say guys that he like one day was at an event met somebody
- 15:26and three days later he started a cigar company like he is just
- 15:31100 percent 100 miles an hour let.
- 15:35Them shook their hand and they were making his cigars like 3
- 15:39weeks. Later so and here's another
- 15:41thing about that. So he said something got him in
- 15:47trouble. It didn't get him in trouble.
- 15:49What they did was the podcast he was on and what he said was.
- 15:56Well, let's, no, let's that was we won't, we won't address that
- 16:00right. We won't address that that
- 16:03because that had nothing to do with what he was.
- 16:05Saying, yeah, yeah. But anyway, Andrew, now the
- 16:11follow up to that for you was going to be tell me about your
- 16:15Pitbull tenacity and writing the book and about your record
- 16:19company and everything you've accomplished.
- 16:21Tell us about that mentality, about you didn't take no for an
- 16:24answer and you just did it your way.
- 16:26And if you were wrong, you were fucking wrong, and you just
- 16:28moved on. Tell me.
- 16:30Tell us about that. Well, a lot of it goes to what
- 16:32you're saying about this. This this gentleman you were
- 16:34just talking about the cigar guy.
- 16:35I didn't catch the full name. What's the name of the cigar
- 16:38company? What was the name of the?
- 16:40What's the name of? The cigar company La Vega.
- 16:45OK, yeah, so like it sounds like he had like a real like ready
- 16:48fire aim mentality, right? Which I think is really
- 16:51necessary because if you're waiting for all the conditions
- 16:53to be perfect, everything to be known, you're, you're never
- 16:56going to start, you're going to have that paralysis, right?
- 16:58But if you just start and you activate energy and then you
- 17:02start firing before you aim, the firing reveals the aim.
- 17:05So action reveals the aim. Like once you get started, the
- 17:08vision starts to unravel with more clarity, right?
- 17:11It's just like you're driving down the road.
- 17:13You don't see all the roads you're going to go down to on
- 17:15the trip. You see just what's in front of
- 17:17you, but things start being revealed as you move forward,
- 17:19right? So it's like the same idea.
- 17:20And that's how it was for me. It was like similar to this
- 17:23story. Like I just decided one day I
- 17:25was unemployed. I got laid off right after I got
- 17:28married to my first wife at a desk job that I didn't like.
- 17:31And I got laid off and I was like delivering pizzas,
- 17:34collected unemployment. I just decided like, you know
- 17:36what, I'm starting a record label.
- 17:38I had a vision for it and maxed out my credit cards.
- 17:41And out of nowhere, I met with this pretty well known band in
- 17:44New York, this band Breakdown, who had a good following and had
- 17:47a history. And I just met with him and I,
- 17:49you know, struck up a deal, not really knowing what I what I was
- 17:52doing actually my credit cards and started the company now then
- 17:55the trouble and the the tumult started because I had revenue,
- 17:59but I also had debt and sales weren't what I thought, but then
- 18:01I was in it right. It was that ready fire aim and
- 18:03you kind of I kind of learned as I went.
- 18:05I took the hits and I kept moving forward, you know,
- 18:08because it it, but it was just the idea of just you just got to
- 18:12get started sometimes. I mean, something burns inside
- 18:14of you and you just let that burn and you don't never act on
- 18:16it, man. It's got to eat you up inside.
- 18:18You know, if it if it's something real that you're
- 18:20supposed to chase after. Oh, so you look like you.
- 18:26You had something to say. I did, but I got cut off.
- 18:29That's OK, I'm good with that. So my thing is this, So you
- 18:34started the record company with your maxed out credit cards and
- 18:37everything else. What would you tell three guys
- 18:41that you know that are here that are starting their own cigar
- 18:45company with like 200 bucks? Well, I don't know if 200 bucks
- 18:52will cut it. I had to use credit, but I get
- 18:55your point. Your point is you're starting
- 18:57with the idea. You're figuring out the details
- 18:59after the fact, right? So, yeah, yeah.
- 19:01It's like, you know, go and you you're building a network of
- 19:04people in the cigar industry through this podcast through
- 19:06through, you know, I think you went to PCA, right?
- 19:08Things like that, like see whose attention you can get without
- 19:12putting them in a burdensome position, right?
- 19:15Like meet them on their own terms and try to find a way to
- 19:17pick the brain and try to figure out like, what should I be
- 19:20thinking about first? What should I be thinking about
- 19:22second? And figure out what those
- 19:23initial steps look like. And do that while you maintain
- 19:27your day job, which I call the thing one and thing two
- 19:29dependency, right? Like so it's maintain that
- 19:31stability. Find the energy in your off
- 19:33hours to take actionable, like affordable steps to start
- 19:36pursuing that North Star dream. And you just got to find those.
- 19:40What is the first affordable step?
- 19:41Take that. What's the next affordable step?
- 19:43But networking is key, right? It's like, who can you see
- 19:46that's already done it or is doing it that that might show
- 19:50you some favor and giving them giving you some of their time
- 19:54and see if you can get some insight and start there.
- 19:58And it's never going to be perfect insight, but you got to
- 20:01get some sort of thread that you can pull on to get that first
- 20:03step like defined. Correct.
- 20:05So we have, we do have a distributor we've been talking
- 20:10when we made our labels for us. Now I just got to send the money
- 20:14for the, for the sample test. I got to send the money for
- 20:18that. Once we get that our cigars
- 20:21should be out. I'm going to say our, our, our
- 20:27samples, not our samples, but our, our limited edition should
- 20:32be out by end of August, beginning in September.
- 20:36That's awesome. So The thing is it's a sample.
- 20:41So when I say a sample, it's limited edition.
- 20:44Once they're gone, they're gone. You need to order them.
- 20:48Once we put the pre-orders out, once we put out the pre-orders,
- 20:52that's what's paying for my cigars, not mine.
- 20:55I got to pay full price, Dennis got to pay full price and Joe's
- 20:58got to pay. I'm not getting a discount, I'm
- 21:01not getting nothing. So anybody out there follow what
- 21:05that man says Andrew Thorpe King in his book.
- 21:10Because that man went from nothing to something.
- 21:18That is my opinion to everybody out there.
- 21:21That's cool that you're taking that step, man.
- 21:23That's awesome. It's going to be called Boss Dog
- 21:24Cigars or what's the what's the brand name?
- 21:26No. It's turnbuckles and stogies.
- 21:29Oh, even OK, that's cool. Tying the wrestling.
- 21:31I like it. That's cool.
- 21:34Well, on that note, let's take a little commercial break and then
- 21:38we'll be. Right back see.
- 25:56Yo, what is up? What is up?
- 25:57Yo, this is the big dog, the host with the most, the vanilla
- 26:02gorilla and the OG. And today's guest we have Mr.
- 26:07ATP, Andrew ATK, Andrew Thorpe King.
- 26:14What's going on? That was a very intense
- 26:17emotional commercial break. I know, right?
- 26:21You, you. So I got, I got to show you when
- 26:23I tell you that this is this is myself.
- 26:27Look at it's highlighted. The whole book is highlighted
- 26:30with what I think is important. That applies to me.
- 26:33I got to circle back. Could you you mentioned
- 26:35something really important before just before break, and
- 26:38that was talking about advice to Joey and boss and myself and
- 26:42finding that mentor, finding somebody that will give a moment
- 26:46of their time to help guide us and maybe point us in the
- 26:49direction. Maybe think of think of things
- 26:51that we're not thinking about to help us in our goals.
- 26:55Now you're in your book. You did a great job at the
- 27:00definitions. I forget what it was called,
- 27:04definition of terms. You call the Carl moment, which
- 27:07addresses just that, and in in eight sentences.
- 27:13Again, people can get the essence of what you're talking
- 27:16about, but talk to people about what the Carl moment is.
- 27:20Yeah, sure. So Carl was a real dude.
- 27:22I'm not going to mention his last name, but at that time I'd
- 27:24already started my record label, but I still had the day job
- 27:27because I couldn't live off it yet, right?
- 27:29But I wanted to get the music industry.
- 27:31I was trying to make my way into that space.
- 27:33And so it was like this serendipitous, almost like
- 27:36divine Providence kind of moment where like I was trying to find
- 27:39someone to help guide me or give me that that that game changing
- 27:43connection. And I was at the gym one night
- 27:46and I see this guy and has a snap case shirt on.
- 27:48That was a band from upstate New York, a hardcore band.
- 27:51They were actually on Victory Records.
- 27:53Tony Brummel, who wrote that Bulldog tenacity chapter about
- 27:56and I just went up and started talking to him.
- 27:59It was rare to see somebody at the gym with like a hardcore
- 28:00shirt on. So it was like a tribal thing,
- 28:02like try, you know, I knew, I knew, I knew what that was kind
- 28:04of thing, you know, it'd be like if you saw somebody with a cigar
- 28:07shirt at a, at a, at a supermarket or some shit, you
- 28:09know, oh, look, you know, he's got a Espinoza shirt on or
- 28:13whatever, right? And so I'm talking to him and it
- 28:15turns out he'd just moved from Colorado.
- 28:17He quit his job as an attorney to be the VP of Relapse Records,
- 28:20which is a, it's a big metal grind core record label, world
- 28:24world renowned. And apparently Relapse is moving
- 28:27from Lancaster, PA, Upper Darby, PA.
- 28:30I just, I happened to live 5 minutes away from what the new
- 28:32office was and I went back and forth with this guy, told him
- 28:35about the label I had started and, and all that kind of thing.
- 28:38And over e-mail within a month, he ended up hiring me over there
- 28:42to run their wholesale apartment.
- 28:43And that just changed everything because once I kind of got into
- 28:45the system, then I was getting paid by day to learn the
- 28:48business that I was doing at night entrepreneurially.
- 28:52So it was very vertically integrated and they at one point
- 28:55even gave me a distribution deal and they started distributing my
- 28:58records for me. I still work for them during the
- 29:00day, but it was a kind of integrated and you know, you
- 29:02can't manufacture those things, right?
- 29:04Like I didn't know I was going to meet him that night.
- 29:06It just sort of happened. But from there on, then started
- 29:10the new network, you know, so, but you're going to be on the
- 29:13lookout for what might be those game changing kind of connectors
- 29:16that you get, you know, these people that you're going to
- 29:18meet. And you know, that's what you
- 29:21guys are doing now. You you're immersing yourself in
- 29:23the cigar industry and trying to figure out, you know, what's
- 29:26what, what the land land is, what's possible.
- 29:29And you never know who you're going to meet that might give
- 29:31you that one insight, give you some time, or give you that
- 29:33connection or that idea, you know?
- 29:36Yeah. So let me ask you this.
- 29:40You said when you were Do you still own your record company?
- 29:47Yeah, I have. I have two of them.
- 29:49They're catalog of over 100 titles between the two labels.
- 29:52One is Thorpe Records and the other is Sailor's Grave Records.
- 29:551 is Thorpe is all hardcore and metal.
- 29:57Sailor's Grave is like punk. Oy St. punk, Psycho Billy,
- 30:02Irish, Irish punk. Do you do concerts and all of
- 30:05that? Nope, that all the booking and
- 30:08all the touring. That was up to the bands.
- 30:09I would support it at certain levels, at certain times, but I
- 30:12was just marketing, distribution, sensing, marketing
- 30:16and distribution. That's essentially what I did.
- 30:18I would, I would sign them record deals and I would get the
- 30:21the music distributed and I would market it.
- 30:23And that was a lot more important before Spotify, before
- 30:26social media, which is why I don't actually, I don't actively
- 30:30do the labels anymore because the models change so much and
- 30:32it's not quite worth it economically anymore.
- 30:35And I've accomplished enough where like I don't even have the
- 30:37desire so much. My desires are elsewhere.
- 30:40So how is that working out now that you don't have to do all
- 30:44that? How?
- 30:45How is your company working now that you don't have to do all?
- 30:49That it's just passive revenue. It's just, I own the right
- 30:52forever. Just like if you own any other
- 30:54asset and money comes in, it's mostly streaming revenue and,
- 30:58and a little bit of downloads from Apple iTunes, but mostly
- 31:03Apple Music and Spotify and all the streaming networks.
- 31:05And, you know, and then I, I pay royalties, the bands that earn
- 31:09them. And I have 3 or 4 bands that are
- 31:11still kind of active on the road that I touched with and friends
- 31:13with. And you know, if they need
- 31:15actual physical products for the road, I, I arranged that and but
- 31:19they're not, they're the record labels aren't active anymore.
- 31:21They're just kind of like passive digital IP rights at
- 31:26this point. So tell us a little bit more and
- 31:34I understand OG spoke about 1 chapter in the book.
- 31:39Tell us a little bit more about your book, like did you write
- 31:45your book or did you have somebody write it for you?
- 31:49I wrote entirely by myself, man. Over the course of eight years,
- 31:52there was fits and starts and stops where there'll be like 6
- 31:54months I didn't write and I'd come back to it and then I'd
- 31:57write a whole bunch and come back to it.
- 31:58But it was really COVID during the lockdown that I really
- 32:01locked in, locked, locked in on the lockdown and really went at
- 32:05it, man. I'd spend like 6 hours a day
- 32:07just pouring out of me. Rewrites, edits, ideas were
- 32:11flowing. I'd go on writers retreats where
- 32:13I bust out 6000 words a day, you know, I mean, just by myself.
- 32:16And that's what it really accelerated.
- 32:19And then I, I worked with Scribe Media and Line Crest Publishing
- 32:24and they had a team of editors that helped me refine it over a
- 32:26course of 18 months and come up with the iconography and the
- 32:29marketing plan and all of that stuff.
- 32:30But every word was my. I mean, yes, through the edits,
- 32:33I accepted some changes from editors, but it was all like,
- 32:36you know, from a, from a origination standpoint, all from
- 32:39my brain and you know, me typing it out.
- 32:42So you basically did what myself, Joey and OG did during
- 32:47coke. You started something and hope
- 32:51it keeps going and God bless COVID.
- 32:54I hope it never ever happens again of.
- 32:56Course, but. With that, there would not be no
- 33:01turnbuckles and stogies without coke.
- 33:03That's, that's a, that's a familiar story.
- 33:05There's a lot of people that started podcasts that are
- 33:07running strong today that started in COVID.
- 33:09I got a, I got a guy, another guy.
- 33:10I know the same thing. And that's like, you know, and
- 33:13that's the thing. You have a choice in situations
- 33:15where life is disrupted, you have a choice to just, you know,
- 33:18focus on the disruption and look at the negative or you take that
- 33:21empty failure space or that empty disruption space and you
- 33:24create something out of nothing. And that's what you did, man.
- 33:26And that's the whole spirit of the book and.
- 33:28You know, great. The thing is, everybody thought
- 33:34Dennis OG left for personal reasons.
- 33:37Whatever he left, he hit us up and said I want to come back.
- 33:43And everybody thought because he left that I was pissed off.
- 33:47Was I pissed when he first left? Yes, because he didn't explain
- 33:50to us. He just said I'm stepping away,
- 33:52I'll talk to you later. I texted him, I called him.
- 33:55I got no answer. Finally he texted me.
- 33:58He goes, yo, can we talk? I said sure we can talk.
- 34:02And Dennis told me this. His wife said to him why didn't
- 34:07you call Dave and tell him why you left?
- 34:12And I said it doesn't matter why he left, he left and I was
- 34:14pissed off because he just up and left without us.
- 34:18Well, you know, sometimes, sometimes in life, sometimes in
- 34:21life there, you know, as an individual, you have to
- 34:25reconcile with yourself 1st and decide who you're going to share
- 34:29that personal information with. And I had to reconcile whether I
- 34:34wanted to share that with you and Joey, I didn't know if that
- 34:36was appropriate, not appropriate.
- 34:38And then I, I finally just said to myself, like, Hey, if this
- 34:43podcast is going to go forward and be successful, we got to be
- 34:47the three best friends out there.
- 34:48You know, I mean, we, we have to know each other inside and out.
- 34:52So I reached out to boss and I said, here's what's going on in
- 34:55my personal life. This is why I didn't reach out
- 34:58immediately because I had to be good with me giving you this
- 35:02information and knowing that you weren't going to share that
- 35:05information expeditiously with anybody.
- 35:09I didn't want that. And once I got that, that inner
- 35:14trust of saying, OK, these guys are not going to do that because
- 35:17let's face it, up until that time, I only met him once in
- 35:21person. And it's always been on
- 35:23Instagram. So it's hard to, yeah, it's hard
- 35:26to figure somebody out and whether you want to do that or
- 35:28not. And I finally, I finally got
- 35:32comfortable with an uncomfortable situation, said,
- 35:34you know what, I'm just going to go for it and just tell them if
- 35:37they understand, great. If they don't, they don't want
- 35:40me back. So be it.
- 35:42You know it's it's going to be what it's going to be which, go
- 35:47ahead. It's it's like I say and and
- 35:51you've heard this OG people hit me up and say, oh, I thought you
- 35:55and OG were never friends. I said no, we've been friends.
- 35:59I said he's one of my best friends.
- 36:02I said yes. I said y'all probably thought
- 36:06because we didn't say much about it, but what am I going to tell
- 36:09him? I said he left due to personal
- 36:12reasons. It's nobody's business why you
- 36:14left. That's a that's a rare thing for
- 36:19people to understand in the in the days of social media and
- 36:22people revealing everything to everyone.
- 36:23So that's a good distinction. Yeah.
- 36:26And, and, and none of us are going to, I don't, I can only
- 36:31speak for me, but I would assume that these guys will never
- 36:33reveal anything that goes on between the three of us to
- 36:37anybody because that's insider stuff that stays, you know, what
- 36:40happens in Vegas stays in Vegas kind of stuff, right?
- 36:45You know, and we've already talked about having select, you
- 36:50know, behind the scenes shows to kind of give everybody the scoop
- 36:55of different moments, different interviews.
- 36:58You know, Joey's got a bunch of video from after production
- 37:01recordings of previous guests and stuff.
- 37:04And eventually we're going to reveal some stuff as more of a
- 37:09consumer interest aspect, if you will.
- 37:12But. Yeah, like and after show, yeah,
- 37:15insider stuff. But I, I kind of want to, I want
- 37:18to get back to you because you are such a fascinating dude.
- 37:22And I hope through this podcast and other podcasts that you've
- 37:26been on, people find you approachable and want to get to
- 37:30know your story because your story is like stuff for
- 37:35Hollywood and it it would endear people to you in a way.
- 37:43No, you know, and instead of just seeing this podcast and
- 37:46going on with her the rest of her time, like I hope they reach
- 37:49out to you on social media and say, Andrew, love to get to know
- 37:51you, you know, let's, where are you?
- 37:53All right, let's I'm close. Let's go grab a cigar or
- 37:55whatever to draw people to you, not only for your book, but
- 38:01again, as someone they can relate to in life that has had
- 38:05these life experiences, not just in business, but in personal a
- 38:09personal aspect and get people to be aware of who Andrew is.
- 38:14Because I got to be honest with you.
- 38:15I'm we've already talked about our history and how we game came
- 38:19about to know each other, but it wasn't until after the after
- 38:23party at barrel and blaze when when just like four of us got
- 38:28together, That's when you and I really started talking like we
- 38:31started to kind of get to know each other and and and had a
- 38:35great time doing that. I hope that, you know, these
- 38:39people watching and listening to this will find that ability in
- 38:43themselves to reach out to you and say, hey, I'm curious about
- 38:46your book, you know, where can I get it?
- 38:47And we'll talk about that later. But where can I get it And tell
- 38:50me about you. And I'm in your neighborhood.
- 38:53Let's have a cigar. Let's sit down and chat.
- 38:56Like, wait. You know, we're all three of us
- 38:58are approachable here. People just don't realize it.
- 39:03People are like, well, you know, go ahead, Joyce, see your hand
- 39:06up? Oh, no, that was your cigar.
- 39:08I'm sorry. It's blocked.
- 39:10It's blocked by the recording. I see up on the screen it said
- 39:13recording. So you're like half blocked out.
- 39:17But anyway, let's get back to Andrew, who are you?
- 39:22And just get us the basics of your roots, not the personal
- 39:26stuff, but just where you grow up.
- 39:29That kind of lifestyle that kind of helped mold you through your
- 39:33journey in life into where you are now.
- 39:36Like where did you start out? Tell us about your roots.
- 39:39Yeah, so I grew up where I live now, even though I didn't always
- 39:42live here, but I grew up in, they call it Delco, Delaware
- 39:46County suburb outside of Philly. That that show, what was it?
- 39:51Mayor of East Town came out a few years ago.
- 39:53It was all Delco based and all the Delco accents.
- 39:55It was like a big deal. There's another movie with Jerry
- 39:58Jeremy Piven called Last Call, which was all Delco based.
- 40:01So like in recent years and the Task came out recently on a
- 40:04Delco based. So Delco has its own character.
- 40:07It's very kind of like working class.
- 40:10It's got like this Philly adjacent kind of accent attached
- 40:14to it. And so that's where I grew up
- 40:17and wandered around, lived in Ohio for seven years, lived in
- 40:20Maryland for a couple years and lived in the city proper for a
- 40:23little bit in South Philly. But now I'm back in Delco.
- 40:26And yeah, so I mean, honestly, I mean, the most formative things
- 40:30that when I was younger, I was, I was never into like team
- 40:32sports. I was never into like, you know,
- 40:34the normal school shit, you know, like I, I wasn't, I wasn't
- 40:37going to go volunteer to have somebody tell me what to do
- 40:39after school when somebody was telling me what to do all day in
- 40:41school. Like that wasn't going to
- 40:42happen. So I got into like freestyle BMX
- 40:46and I was into like hanging out with skateboarders and I was
- 40:48into like, you know, rock climbing and mountain biking and
- 40:51then eventually got into bodybuilding and that became
- 40:53more of like a primary, like physical pursuit, physical
- 40:56outlet. And there was like a thread to
- 40:59that. There was a soundtrack to that
- 41:00the whole time. And that soundtrack was hardcore
- 41:03and punk rock music and a little bit of metal, but mostly
- 41:05hardcore and punk rock. There was just, you know, I
- 41:07listened to like when I was really young, I listened to
- 41:09like, you know, the classic awesome, you know, metal rock
- 41:13bands, ACDC, Sabbath and Motörhead, stuff like that.
- 41:16Still love all those bands. They have a Motörhead tattoo.
- 41:18But when I first started to hear him like the raw, like visceral,
- 41:22kind of like truth seeking Agony that came out of bands like
- 41:25Black Flag or like Subhumans or Murphy's Law to New York City or
- 41:30Gnostic front or I'm a victim in pain.
- 41:32Like that stuff just gripped me so much.
- 41:34It was like that was like that was like the the soul on fire
- 41:37inside me. That was that was yearning to be
- 41:38expressed. And so that that still carries
- 41:41with me today. You know, that's from like
- 41:43whatever age like 13 to 52. I still listen to a lot of that
- 41:46same music and the upgraded stuff of the new scene, you
- 41:49know, and, and I found a way or I found the connection and
- 41:53through line from that spirit, that punk rock ethos of, of, of
- 41:57circumventing gatekeepers and finding a way to do the things
- 42:00you want to do in the world. I found that in
- 42:02entrepreneurialism. I I found that, you know, and in
- 42:08in a lot of other areas that I think it carries through and
- 42:12it's just that overall like independence mindset and it's
- 42:15the ready fire aim and it's the DIY and like that's how I pursue
- 42:20my creative pursuits. That's how this book came about.
- 42:22Like, Oh, OK, I don't need to find a publisher.
- 42:25I'm going to work with a self-publishing team that can
- 42:27assist me and find a way to do it very professionally and own
- 42:30the rights and do it that way. Oh well, you know what?
- 42:33I want to be in the music industry and I'm in front of a
- 42:35job. I'm going to start a record
- 42:35label first. Just went out, you know, put my
- 42:37balls on the table and figured it out.
- 42:39Like when I want to do something, I'm just going to
- 42:41find a way to do it. Even often times, if I know I'm
- 42:44almost intentionally going to make my life harder and more
- 42:46risky by doing it. But in the end, in the end, it's
- 42:50like you're killing that future, future regret.
- 42:52I'm not going to be on my deathbed and go, man, I should
- 42:54have tried this. Why?
- 42:55Why didn't I do that? Yeah, it might have been risky,
- 42:57but I should at least give it a shot.
- 42:59Like, that's not going to happen.
- 43:00Because when I want to do something, I'm going to do it.
- 43:02And if it works out, great. If it doesn't, I'm going to
- 43:04learn a lot. You're either winning or
- 43:05learning and both of those are good.
- 43:08So you just got to learn, right? And that's kind of what this
- 43:10book is about. It's how how to learn about
- 43:11failure correctly. So you metabolize it and turn it
- 43:14into something good and learn how to shift and find something
- 43:16good in the rubble and create something new again out of it.
- 43:19You know, that's kind of what it's about.
- 43:22So let's get back to you said that you know you had the first
- 43:30wife, the second wife. I just want to touch on it
- 43:33because people are probably saying damn this guy got three
- 43:36girlfriends, 2 wives, whatever. No, no, we're divorced.
- 43:40I have one girlfriend. Let's go back to your first wife
- 43:44and what she thought about what you did and maxed out everything
- 43:48and everything else. Yeah.
- 43:51Well, I mean, it was early on in the marriage.
- 43:52We were in our 20s, so I think there was a lot of trust there.
- 43:54She knew as a hard worker that even if things didn't work out,
- 43:57I was going to keep finding ways to make them work out.
- 43:59And that was the case for most of the time.
- 44:01But there was like this, you know, critical point of like,
- 44:05you know, tension that just broke the relationship at one
- 44:07point. And it wasn't around the record
- 44:09labels at that time. It was later to run another
- 44:11business working online lending. And, you know, there was just,
- 44:14and we had three kids at the time.
- 44:16And, you know, our lifestyle had swelled and, you know, things
- 44:19had swelled. And there was like this chasm
- 44:21between me working all the time so that she can stay home with
- 44:24the kids. And I think there was this chasm
- 44:26between like the mentalities, right?
- 44:28Like we grew apart because we had such different lives.
- 44:31She wasn't experiencing the complexity of of contending with
- 44:35the world and the way that I was, and I wasn't experiencing
- 44:37the complexity of being home with children and raising
- 44:40children the way she was. So it's hard to even talk to her
- 44:43at night and vice versa. It's hard for her to talk to me.
- 44:45Like we didn't understand each other.
- 44:47And I'm not even making a judgement on that either way,
- 44:51But that was just a reality. And I think that ultimately just
- 44:53led to us splitting up, you know, but and and I think in the
- 44:58end, she, yeah, I'm sure resented that I wasn't just
- 45:03going to conform, go find a normal job, a clock in whether I
- 45:07was miserable or not and do and and just do that.
- 45:10Ultimately I I had to at certain time and that now I've had AW
- 45:13two job for over 13 years, but it's a high end professional job
- 45:16in banking. But I had to go through all the
- 45:19things I went through to even be qualified to do that.
- 45:22I had to start my own stuff and learn on my own and fail a bunch
- 45:24of time to even have the wisdom and the experience to get the
- 45:27job I have now. I wouldn't have been able to
- 45:29even get a job like that back then.
- 45:31I had an English degree. I was going to get a high end
- 45:33job and finance. I had to go start my own lending
- 45:35company on my own with before I can get that job, you know?
- 45:40So it's just the way that my calling journey unfolded.
- 45:44So see, that's like me and my wife.
- 45:47We're together 30 years and we've had our downfalls, we've
- 45:53had our in and outs. 30 years, That's cool.
- 45:56I've wanted to get a divorce. And then I'm like, what the fuck
- 45:59are you doing? That stupid?
- 46:01She's been with you this long. Let's keep it going.
- 46:03And I'm going to tell you, bro, it's hard and it's hard in New
- 46:06York. It really is.
- 46:08I'm retired. I retired two years ago.
- 46:11So it's a hard job. It really is.
- 46:14To be retired and have my wife work my son work, you know, and,
- 46:20and like you, my wife is our big supporter.
- 46:25Like when we started our cigars, she's like Joey's like dad, I'm
- 46:30going to go show mom. I said, OK, my wife goes, why
- 46:32don't you do this rather than put it like this?
- 46:36And I'm like, OK, not a bad thing.
- 46:40And you know, your wife has to support you in what you do in
- 46:45order to make it to where you want to be and where you want to
- 46:49bring your family. If you don't bring your wife and
- 46:52your kids, then I don't know what to say because my wife and
- 46:57my kids are with me all the way. And yes, I had AI had three
- 47:02strokes in February. My wife and my daughters are my
- 47:07wife and my daughter. My son get a little nervous
- 47:11because there's days when I forget what I'm doing.
- 47:13And Joe is like, dad, we got to do this.
- 47:15I'm like, but we just, he said, no, we didn't do that yet.
- 47:18We're going to do it now. So yes, I understand exactly
- 47:21what you're saying. And that is why I wanted you on
- 47:25here because you have your book is something that people should
- 47:31really, really read because I love your book.
- 47:36And it's, it's something that if you're going to start a business
- 47:41or you want to start something new, your book is something to
- 47:45read because you held it down with what you're doing.
- 47:52And I don't know if you're still doing the banking thing or
- 47:55whatever, but God bless you, brother, because you are holding
- 48:01it down right now. And I see you're in the gym.
- 48:06I see how big you are. And you know, people don't
- 48:10realize you're a big guy, you're approachable.
- 48:15And that's all I got to say is like, Andrew thought King is a
- 48:21cool dude. I love him to death.
- 48:24And it is what it is. Like, if you ain't read his
- 48:28book, failure rules. You need to get that book
- 48:32honest. You need to get that book
- 48:34because that book is the bomb. You know, Andrew, you're you,
- 48:39your personal situation exemplifies the book in in in
- 48:45one aspect. Well, in many aspects, but in
- 48:48the particular aspect that you're talking about your
- 48:51dissolved marriages. I learned, I'm divorced.
- 48:56I, you know, it's a learning experience.
- 48:58You learn from it. And that's the only way we
- 49:01evolve as human beings, not just as men, but as human beings.
- 49:04In my situation, I listen, I I was very outspoken to in my
- 49:09first marriage and I I should have been a little more
- 49:12reserved. I should have listened more.
- 49:15I should have complied more. I'm not saying be a subservient
- 49:21husband. I mean, what I'm saying is it,
- 49:24you know, in a marriage is give and take.
- 49:27What I've learned through that in several different
- 49:30relationships with my current life is that I have got probably
- 49:36my most my best friend of all time.
- 49:39I married my best friend and I've for the first time in my
- 49:43life, I experienced loyalty coming back to me.
- 49:47This woman will live for me and will die for me and vice versa.
- 49:52And I have learned that how to listen, how to take her advice,
- 49:58how to accept when I'm wrong and admit that I'm wrong.
- 50:01Men don't like to do that. Got we all don't like to do
- 50:04that. No one wants to be wrong.
- 50:06But I had to learn that. My point is I had to learn that
- 50:09through previous relationships. All of my journey got me to this
- 50:14relationship, into this marriage.
- 50:17And I got to be honest with you, Andrew, we have not fought
- 50:22since. We've been together for six
- 50:24years, married 5. We've not fought one.
- 50:26Wow. That's awesome.
- 50:28We do get upset at each other, but we both learned just to shut
- 50:32our mouth, walk away and don't go to bed angry.
- 50:37Like by the time it's time to go to bed, water under the bridge,
- 50:41move on like it's gone. And there, you know, we, we've,
- 50:46I've learned from my previous relationships how I need to
- 50:51improve my character, not only for my wife, but for my children
- 50:56and for my coworkers and for my friends.
- 50:58And I've learned that. And I think you just exemplified
- 51:01that aspect of your book and how this book applies to personal
- 51:07relationships, to entrepreneurship, to business
- 51:10relationships, to, you know, just everyday, you know, friends
- 51:15and, and whatever. This book is a great guide.
- 51:19And again, people don't have to read it cover to cover.
- 51:21I have not. I've read every chapter, but
- 51:24I've not read it cover to cover. I have bounced around to
- 51:28something that I find applicable.
- 51:30I'll put it down. I won't pick it up for two
- 51:32months. Something will happen.
- 51:34I'll go. I got to jump in that book.
- 51:35There's something in there that's going to help me in this
- 51:37situation and I'll jump into the book and the highlighter comes
- 51:40out. Yeah, yeah, that's that's the
- 51:44way I wrote it. I wrote it so that it keep it
- 51:45was like snackable. You know, you can pick up any
- 51:47part, any chapter you can read and it has a beginning, middle
- 51:50and end and you can get something out of chapter even if
- 51:52you haven't read the book in sequence.
- 51:53And that that was the idea. And there's enough Nuggets in
- 51:56there from quotes and and and whatnot that you can get little
- 51:59pieces of hopeful wisdom on the fly as you need it.
- 52:04What catches your eye and and, you know, relates to your
- 52:07current situation or mindset issue, you know, but yeah, I
- 52:12mean, everything you're saying makes a lot of sense and it it
- 52:14does align with the book. I mean, I tried to write it in
- 52:16such a way where it's like, I think even in the introduction I
- 52:18said like, look, I could change my mind on this stuff three
- 52:21years from now. I'm still learning, I'm
- 52:23evolving. This is not like some self help
- 52:25book where I say I have all the answers.
- 52:26I know I don't have all the answers.
- 52:27It's the old saying of like, as the, you know, island of my
- 52:31knowledge grows, so does the shore of my ignorance, you know,
- 52:33and it's like, look, I'm just writing what I think I've
- 52:36learned now, right? And hopefully, you know, you can
- 52:39cherry pick what works for you and what makes sense.
- 52:41If not, no worries, right? Like this is like me saying, I
- 52:45know all these truths, but I felt like I stumbled upon some
- 52:48truths that might be useful to others.
- 52:49And that's why I wrote the book, you know, And like the
- 52:52relationship thing. My, my second wife, we got
- 52:55divorced, but we're still like forever friends.
- 52:57We even joked like, Hey, we should make our divorce
- 52:59agreement called the forever friend agreement because we just
- 53:03felt that we just felt like, you know what, we, we probably
- 53:05should be married. There's a variety of reasons for
- 53:07that, but that we we still respected each other and we felt
- 53:11like we loved each other better than we found each other.
- 53:14You know, now I've been with a woman for three years.
- 53:16That's probably a better match for me as like a romantic
- 53:18partner or, you know, or as a, you know, intimate partner.
- 53:22But I'm still friends with my ex-wife and she's still
- 53:23important in my life, you know, in, in a lot of ways.
- 53:26And we, you know, you say like we always say, like, you know,
- 53:28it's unconventional, but we judge our relationship by its
- 53:31depth, not its length. You know, it had a season and,
- 53:35you know, marriage by design is supposed to be forever.
- 53:37And we get that it just turned out that one wasn't going to be
- 53:40forever. So what do we do?
- 53:42We figure out, OK, well, what is it?
- 53:44What is good in this, how we preserve that right?
- 53:46And so that that's what happened.
- 53:47And I'm great. I'm grateful because now I'm
- 53:49with a a woman that, you know, we're very much aligned on what
- 53:53we want our relationship to be and how we want it to function,
- 53:55how we want it to look. And like you, there's been no
- 53:57fighting at all. And it's been, you know, almost
- 53:59three years. So it just gets better, you
- 54:02know, week to week. So.
- 54:03So let me ask you this question. Well, hold that thought for a
- 54:08while. We got to take a break, we'll be
- 54:11right back but turn fuckers in stogie spot.
- 58:22Yo-yo, yo, what is up? What is up?
- 58:24Yo, it's turnbuckles and story spot.
- 58:26I am the big dog. We got the vanilla gorilla, we
- 58:29got the OG, and we got the guest of the week, Andrew Thorpe King.
- 58:34So Andrew, I got to ask my brother because we're sitting
- 58:39here and I'm looking at you and I'm trying to figure this out
- 58:44because bro, you're covered from head to toe and tattoo.
- 58:49What the hell it's going on there?
- 58:54Oh, yeah, yeah. I didn't cover that part.
- 58:56I think I knew when I was 12 year old, 12 years old, before,
- 58:59like, tattoos were even, like, acceptable in any way, shape or
- 59:01form that I wanted to be covered.
- 59:03And I remember when I got my first one at 16.
- 59:06People are like, oh, you're going to get addicted.
- 59:07I'm like, no, I'm not. I'm going to be on a very
- 59:09strategic plan of the course of my life, make it a symbolic road
- 59:14map of everything I care about throughout the course of my
- 59:16life. And that's exactly what I've
- 59:17done. It doesn't mean every tattoo is
- 59:19carried with some sort of deep meaning.
- 59:21Some are just bad ass looking and just reflect some portion of
- 59:25my spirit. But a lot of them do have a lot
- 59:27of meaning, you know, And even besides all that, just from like
- 59:30an artistic standpoint, I've always had, I've had a deep
- 59:33affinity for the bold, symmetrical, colorful kind of
- 59:37style, traditional tattooing, the gold sailor dairy stuff, and
- 59:40you know, all of that. So it's just been a passion of
- 59:42mine and it's still undying. I'm 52, I haven't gotten any
- 59:47tattoos for a couple of years because I had one whole year
- 59:49where I was there every month getting my whole back done.
- 59:52And so I'm taking a little time off, but I already have my plan
- 59:55for what I'm doing next. So it's just like I'll be
- 59:57getting tattooed in into my 60s and 70s.
- 1:00:00I'm sure it's just my favorite things.
- 1:00:04Let me ask, he said. 67. So I'm younger than I am.
- 1:00:10I'm the oldest guy on here right now.
- 1:00:12I won't ask your age. You don't have to reveal that.
- 1:00:1556 I'll be 50. Seven.
- 1:00:17I'm 52. I ain't far behind there, Big
- 1:00:19dog. Yeah, you're not far ahead.
- 1:00:24So ain't that old? My thing is this, when you sit
- 1:00:30down with your artist and you give him an idea, because I gave
- 1:00:36an artist an idea for I forget which tattoo.
- 1:00:43Oh, I think it was this one. I gave him an idea and I said
- 1:00:52this is what I want and I want this one on the radio.
- 1:00:55Shout out to K1O47. So I gave him an idea of what I
- 1:00:59wanted and he goes, give me like 20 minutes.
- 1:01:05He came back and I said I actually like that.
- 1:01:09I like that that work. He goes, you want it?
- 1:01:11I said, yeah, it's the only tattoo.
- 1:01:15Yeah, yeah. Custom.
- 1:01:16Yeah, yeah. So people don't realize guys
- 1:01:23with tattoos, everybody thinks guys with tattoos are badass.
- 1:01:28Listen, I'm the sweetest guy you'll ever meet.
- 1:01:32Sorry that slipped out man, my bad.
- 1:01:36I love your brother. Listen, Ogia tell you people
- 1:01:39think I'm an asshole. I'm this.
- 1:01:41I'm not you. Definitely.
- 1:01:42Are I am an asshole, I live the asshole life.
- 1:01:46Listen, I live the asshole life. But my thing is, and Ogea will
- 1:01:52tell you I am the most sweetest dude you'll ever meet.
- 1:01:57You come over to me. You want to talk, you want to
- 1:02:00hang out, you want to smoke a stick, that's cool.
- 1:02:04But don't screw me over, because the minute you screw me over,
- 1:02:08I'm screwing you back and it's going to be 110% more.
- 1:02:13Yeah. You know so.
- 1:02:19What? What are you smoking, right?
- 1:02:21Now, right? This is the Espinoza La Bamba
- 1:02:27Six O 1, Warhead 2. Show them the ashtray we got.
- 1:02:31Well, it's not an ashtray, but look at the ashtray we picked up
- 1:02:34on Saturday, box that that comes.
- 1:02:37Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's a bad ass box.
- 1:02:38I love, I love the graphics on that.
- 1:02:40I I took it from the smoke shop we went to.
- 1:02:43He the Johnny told me to take it so I figured since it's closed
- 1:02:49and it's solid at the bottom I now have a bad ass ass crack.
- 1:02:53Yeah, why not? That's perfect, man.
- 1:02:55Stand it right? Now that was a intended multi
- 1:02:58purpose. Yeah, they didn't know.
- 1:03:02So what shops do you go to where you live and do when you go
- 1:03:09there and I'm not being funny or nothing, do people actually come
- 1:03:14and sit down and speak with you about your book?
- 1:03:17Do they know that you wrote a book?
- 1:03:19How does that work? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:21So a lot of shops around here, you know, Philly area, Jersey,
- 1:03:26Delaware, a lot of shops, cool shops in Delaware.
- 1:03:30A lot of them are kind of like it's sexual.
- 1:03:34I'm being like dudes from Delaware, I'll come to the shops
- 1:03:36in Delco. Dudes from Delco go to the shops
- 1:03:38in Delaware, vice versa. Like they all hang out at all
- 1:03:40the different shops. There's maybe six or seven of
- 1:03:42them. And so we all kind of know each
- 1:03:44other. Where I live now, I can walk to
- 1:03:46cigar lounge. I hardly even drive anymore.
- 1:03:48I work from home. I can walk to cigar lounge.
- 1:03:50I only drive to the gym unless I'm going somewhere.
- 1:03:52It's, it's great. You know, I got my hot tub here.
- 1:03:55I can walk to the cigar lounge. I live right in a town with this
- 1:03:59bunch of killer restaurants within walking distance.
- 1:04:00So like my life is very localized now and I love it.
- 1:04:03It's a lot of people go to the cigar lounge that I, I, I go to,
- 1:04:06which is pairings and Jimmy Boy from Great cigars.
- 1:04:10His fiance is the assistant manager there.
- 1:04:14So yeah. And then my friend Rami, who
- 1:04:16works for Espinoza, his wife works there too.
- 1:04:19So it's like this whole family kind of ori or family kind of,
- 1:04:22you know, sea, I guess you know what I mean.
- 1:04:25So that's like my probably meant my home shot or my member.
- 1:04:28But then there's a lot of other great ones like wooden Indians
- 1:04:30on the great one. We're having the the 10th
- 1:04:32anniversary of the great cigars podcast there in August, and
- 1:04:36we'll be doing a lot of podcasts.
- 1:04:37I'll be selling books. So like they, they all know
- 1:04:39because I I've done events at all the shops around here.
- 1:04:43So. You know, signing books and and
- 1:04:44talking about the book and doing live podcasts.
- 1:04:46On Let me ask You about Jimmy, because that's one of your best
- 1:04:50friends. I love Jimmy to death, but when
- 1:04:57you go to a cigar lounge, there's no reason to carry your
- 1:05:02handcuffs. There's no reason to carry your
- 1:05:07handcuffs or you're shooting with you.
- 1:05:09You're not going to arrest. You get PTSD, you're.
- 1:05:14Not going there. You're not going there to arrest
- 1:05:17nobody, you're going there to have a good time and hang out
- 1:05:19and smoke. And I love Jimmy, but yeah,
- 1:05:22yeah, Jimmy has the attitude of I'm a cop and you're a criminal.
- 1:05:28I don't know about the second part.
- 1:05:30I don't think he thinks everybody's a criminal.
- 1:05:31He just loves being a cop. His dad was a cop, his
- 1:05:33grandfather was a cop, and he lives there.
- 1:05:36I mean, you see this mustache dude?
- 1:05:37He is like he's born with that cop mustache.
- 1:05:39I think but what I'm saying. Out of the womb with that
- 1:05:41fucking thing. Wait.
- 1:05:42Correct me, correct me if I'm wrong, Correct me if I'm wrong.
- 1:05:46Me and Joey have my my cousin was a cop.
- 1:05:49My cousin retired. I have friends that are cops.
- 1:05:52When they go to lounges, they don't even carry their cuffs.
- 1:05:55They don't. They leave their gun in the car.
- 1:05:57When you go to a cigar lounge, you leave your gun in the car.
- 1:05:59There's no reason to carry a gun with you, you understand?
- 1:06:04First of all, you never know. Second of all, I understand your
- 1:06:08trepidation. Third of all, man, it's just
- 1:06:10intertwined with his identity, man.
- 1:06:11I mean, it's just, you know, it's just, I mean, you go to a
- 1:06:15cigar lounge, you're still going to talk about wrestling, You're
- 1:06:17still going to consider yourself a wrestling aficionado.
- 1:06:20He goes, he's still Jimmy the cop, you know what I mean?
- 1:06:23So I think it's just intertwined.
- 1:06:24He can't separate, you know it is.
- 1:06:26True. It is true, you can't turn off
- 1:06:27the cop. You can't turn off the cop.
- 1:06:29You know, I remember we were, that we were doing an, we were
- 1:06:33doing an event in Dallas, TX and cigar lounge podcast and book
- 1:06:38signing and everything. And we're there the the host who
- 1:06:42hooked us up with the event sitting there.
- 1:06:44And all the sudden he's like, hey, man, you want some
- 1:06:46mushrooms? Jimmy's like, you remember I'm a
- 1:06:48fucking cop, right? Like, what are you doing?
- 1:06:49I'm like come. On Yeah, but what does that
- 1:06:52mean? So what, You're a cop?
- 1:06:54So take the fucking mushroom. He wanted the mushrooms.
- 1:06:58He's not that kind of dude, you know, He sticks to the basic
- 1:07:01vices like I do caffeine, nicotine and alcohol.
- 1:07:03But you know, it was just funny. It was a funny moment.
- 1:07:05No, that, that is kind of funny though.
- 1:07:07But it's like, I guess to them, it's like, you know, we're at
- 1:07:10the lounge, we're here to hang out.
- 1:07:11Like everybody has their own thing.
- 1:07:14They were just being nice to offer it to you.
- 1:07:16He was. He was.
- 1:07:18Yeah. He laughed.
- 1:07:19He didn't take offense, though. He just thought it was funny.
- 1:07:20Right? Like.
- 1:07:21Yeah, it was. That's actually that is.
- 1:07:23Pretty funny though, so. That same night I was in the, I
- 1:07:27was in the humidor and another guy who was talking about that
- 1:07:29book, he has much questions or whatever and he hadn't bought 1
- 1:07:32yet. And this is the first time I, I
- 1:07:35heard this proposition for a very unique payment type for
- 1:07:38buying my book. Usually it's Hey, Venmo cash,
- 1:07:40you know, whatever. And he's like, hey man, can I
- 1:07:42give you something an equal compensation for your book?
- 1:07:44I'm like, what are you going to do some cigars?
- 1:07:46Sure, you're going to do some cigars.
- 1:07:48We can do that. He's like, Nah man, give me a
- 1:07:51bump for the book. I'm like, Nah, dude, I don't.
- 1:07:52I don't do coke, so I don't accept cocaine as payment for my
- 1:07:56literature. You.
- 1:07:57Know what I mean? Like bump for a book.
- 1:07:59It's not on my website that you can send me a bag of coke for
- 1:08:02for the book. You know that's it's not an
- 1:08:04acceptable payment type you. Know so so so Andrew, I have AI,
- 1:08:07have AI have a Frankie. That's not unheard of.
- 1:08:10I have a bump here so me and Joey's going to send you a
- 1:08:14couple of pictures. Can I get another book?
- 1:08:17A couple of pictures. What do you mean?
- 1:08:20Bro, you're going to be a few bucks short.
- 1:08:21You're going to be a few bucks short though.
- 1:08:24I'll be a few bucks short but it's OK, I can get a book.
- 1:08:28Throw a bag of coke in there and we're good.
- 1:08:30No problem. That's.
- 1:08:33An interesting that's most interesting thing I've heard.
- 1:08:37Try to pay for something. Yeah, I was like, yeah, hey, you
- 1:08:41know, I think I'm going to change my website tomorrow, pay
- 1:08:43for the book through Amazon, Venmo or a bag of Coke.
- 1:08:46I mean, whatever, you know, what have you got?
- 1:08:48Go for the bar system. But here I got a little spoon
- 1:08:51that comes with it too. It's not so.
- 1:08:55Tell us and OG, correct me if I'm wrong.
- 1:08:59Tell us about some stories in your book that the viewers want
- 1:09:07to hear, not me and OG, because we read it, Joey, read it.
- 1:09:12Tell us about a few spots that you know in your book that can
- 1:09:16maybe and hopefully help somebody change their life.
- 1:09:23You're asking me not OG, right? I'm asking you, I said.
- 1:09:26OG knows, but I want you to tell.
- 1:09:29Yeah, I mean, so they're stories that are personal, like, you
- 1:09:33know, it's very revelatory and and disclose a lot of somewhat
- 1:09:37vulnerable things, you know, if it believes it leads.
- 1:09:40But then there's a whole bunch of case studies too, trying to
- 1:09:44think of one that's really kind of poignant, that really means a
- 1:09:46lot to me. You know what I'll tell you one,
- 1:09:48this one where I talk about the season where within the span of
- 1:09:53like a month or two, I don't remember the exact time, but
- 1:09:55within a couple months, I, I, I went through a business divorce
- 1:09:58and a marital divorce. So 2, like twin failures.
- 1:10:01You know, the two biggest areas of 1's life is the work and the
- 1:10:04relationship. And both of those split at the
- 1:10:07same time, right? So all of a sudden I found my, I
- 1:10:09found myself, you know, going from being, you know, having a
- 1:10:13home to go to at night, you know, office to go to by day and
- 1:10:15a home to go to by night. And all of a sudden I didn't,
- 1:10:18all of a sudden it was like neither of those existed.
- 1:10:20I'm in a hotel room and I'm trying to figure out what I'm
- 1:10:24going to do with this empty space now in my life.
- 1:10:27And you know, I could have like embraced despair.
- 1:10:31I could have embraced pessimism and negativity.
- 1:10:33I could have focused on all the changes and disruption.
- 1:10:36But instead, like, it's actually when like my, my idea engine
- 1:10:39revved up and five new things in my life started that ended up
- 1:10:43being successful at various timelines in various degrees.
- 1:10:46I started the manuscript and failure rules in that space.
- 1:10:49I finished my first spy novel in that space.
- 1:10:52I resurrected my record labels and released 5 or 6 records.
- 1:10:55I started a lead generation company after I started
- 1:11:00consulting business in the lending space, then a lead
- 1:11:02generation company and I redid my resume in such a way to get
- 1:11:05my first job, corporate job in fintech, financial technology.
- 1:11:09So like 5 amazing things all happened in that empty space
- 1:11:12where a lot of people would have been like, Oh my life's over, my
- 1:11:15marriage is over and my my one business I'm no longer in and
- 1:11:20everything falling apart blah blah blah.
- 1:11:21But I saw, OK, everything's falling apart.
- 1:11:23That means everything's wide, wide open.
- 1:11:24When everything's wide open, I can come up with a whole bunch
- 1:11:27of new ideas and see what works. And those five things all kind
- 1:11:30of bore some sort of fruit over some sort of time.
- 1:11:33And you know, a lot of that was like the backdrop to that is
- 1:11:37there was a song by the band Apri called Divinity of Purpose.
- 1:11:40And he talks about like being having your feet close to the
- 1:11:43ledge, get ready to jump off. I'm paraphrasing.
- 1:11:45But then you back off and you realize the purpose inside and
- 1:11:48the divinity of that. And you crash into that spirit,
- 1:11:51you invoke that, you make shit happen.
- 1:11:53And that song was like the soundtrack to that season in my
- 1:11:56life. And years later now, like all
- 1:11:58those threads are still humming at various speeds.
- 1:12:01You know, so like to me that that that's like one of the most
- 1:12:05personal personally important pivotal times in my life that I
- 1:12:08write about in the book. I, I can't remember if that's
- 1:12:12three or four, if that's rule 3 or 4, but it's one of those two,
- 1:12:14four. I think I do, I think it was in
- 1:12:17four. Yeah, it was 3/3 or 4.
- 1:12:20But so we're talking about what you were smoking in Espinoza,
- 1:12:23correct? Yeah, the six O 1.
- 1:12:25So I, I right around this time on the show, I always ask this
- 1:12:28over guests. So I'm going to rephrase this a
- 1:12:31little bit because people tell me they don't like the word
- 1:12:34favorite when I say what's your favorite cigar?
- 1:12:38So. There's like it's hard to put
- 1:12:40on, so I'll rephrase that. And that's and that's what I
- 1:12:44hear right, right. And it's a moving target.
- 1:12:47But what's your so three questions actually 4 I'm going
- 1:12:50to ask 3 and the 4th I'm going to ask separate.
- 1:12:52So the first one is what's your go to cigar?
- 1:12:56The 1:00 you got to have in your humidor your go to cigar.
- 1:13:01Right right now, like I have, I, I buy stash every couple of
- 1:13:04weeks, 3040 cigars and it's a mix of foundation, Tataway, my
- 1:13:11father, and then I throw in some other stuff here and there.
- 1:13:15But lately I've been loving, I mean the Espinoza and I'm biased
- 1:13:18because Romney works for them and he's my buddy.
- 1:13:20But out of all the companies he's worked for, like they have
- 1:13:23the, they have the widest selection of cigars where I like
- 1:13:26all of them, but there's like 3 or 4 that I love.
- 1:13:28I love the. Six and one green.
- 1:13:30Yeah, I love the six O 1 green. I love the the crema in the
- 1:13:33morning lighter one with the coffee and the knuckle sandwich.
- 1:13:38Connecticut is great too, and I love the Loranga Loranga and the
- 1:13:42Herbano. So they just I know I love the
- 1:13:46Espinoza lately, but also I love the my father blue.
- 1:13:49I love I love them actually my father, my favorite.
- 1:13:51My father is the the Fonseca, the Mexican one Mexican blend
- 1:13:56that's my favorite. Second, yeah.
- 1:13:58That is fucking dope. Fonseca Yeah 6.
- 1:14:00Dollars Cigar. Mine, mine's the judge out of
- 1:14:03that line. My favorite's a judge in the
- 1:14:05blue. Those are my 2 top on on those.
- 1:14:08So #2 so #2 is your go to whiskey or bourbon that when
- 1:14:15you're you're deliberating, I don't know what I want and you
- 1:14:18go pick a restaurant or bar. You say you know what do you
- 1:14:21have if I if? I can't think of something
- 1:14:25specific. It's always like, just give me
- 1:14:27Woodford Reserve, give me Knob Creek, you know, nothing
- 1:14:30special. Just give me that.
- 1:14:31Like everybody. It reminds me of like the, the,
- 1:14:34the episode of what was it? It's Billy Bob Thornton in, in
- 1:14:38Goliath when he's at the bar and they're like, yeah, once it was
- 1:14:42Drake. He's like, I'll have some
- 1:14:44bourbon. Like what kind would you like?
- 1:14:45He's like, I don't really give a shit.
- 1:14:46Just give me a bourbon. Make sure it's brown.
- 1:14:48You know what I mean? Like sometimes I'm just in that
- 1:14:50mode, like, yeah, it's brown. It's brown, right?
- 1:14:52It's not shit. It's not.
- 1:14:53As long as it's not, well, just give me some fucking bourbon.
- 1:14:55You know what I mean? So let me ask you that.
- 1:14:57Question, let me ask you the question before OG gets to it.
- 1:15:00So when you when you go and you say give me some whisk and they
- 1:15:06say, well, we don't have Woodford, we don't have this.
- 1:15:09What about Jack Daniels? Hello.
- 1:15:12Jack, Jack Daniels is good. I like it, particularly because
- 1:15:15it is like the personified whiskey of Lemmy Kilnister,
- 1:15:19Motörhead. I mean, him and Jack Daniels are
- 1:15:21like, they're like the same thing, you know?
- 1:15:22I think he's probably buried in a couple bottles of, In fact,
- 1:15:25when I went to the Punk Rock Museum and I saw the shrine for
- 1:15:27Lemmy Kilnister or Motörhead, there was like a bottle of Jack
- 1:15:29there. I'm pretty sure.
- 1:15:30I'm not. I'm not totally sure, but I'm
- 1:15:31pretty sure, you know. So yeah, Jack Daniels, certainly
- 1:15:34characters with it, all kinds of thematic and symbolic power.
- 1:15:37Absolutely. Yeah, I like Woodford Reserve,
- 1:15:40specifically the double Oak Reserve.
- 1:15:45It's it's 115.9 proof, but it's smooth as glass.
- 1:15:50It is that that's my favor. I will put it down as my that's
- 1:15:54my all time favorite and #3 is you're at a restaurant, your go
- 1:15:59to food, you're looking at the menu, You're just like, I can't
- 1:16:03decide. Just give me a what?
- 1:16:07Well, I mean, I'm from Philly, dude, so a good, a good cheese
- 1:16:10steak, man. Just keeping simple around here.
- 1:16:13Like there's a, there's a Mediterranean restaurant I go
- 1:16:15through up the street Mediterranean and the
- 1:16:17Mediterranean food is banging, dude.
- 1:16:19The lamb is amazing. Everything's freaking great.
- 1:16:21But they also serve cheese steaks.
- 1:16:22And a lot of times I go to a Mediterranean restaurant because
- 1:16:25they have a great fucking cheese steak they just give me.
- 1:16:26The cheese, you know what I mean?
- 1:16:28So, yeah, yeah. So this is the fourth and this
- 1:16:31is my favorite question. The 4th is my favorite question
- 1:16:33I ask everybody that comes on. You get one hour uninterrupted,
- 1:16:39no phone calls, no one coming into the room, and you can sit
- 1:16:44with one person and have a cigar and a conversation for
- 1:16:47uninterrupted one hour time past, present or future.
- 1:16:52Who would Andrew Thorpe King sit down in that hour and have a
- 1:16:57cigar with? Is this like a wish list?
- 1:16:59Somebody not already in my life? Somebody that I wish I could
- 1:17:01have. Yeah, anybody.
- 1:17:03Anybody. Past, present or future, We've
- 1:17:06had great responses, too, from a lot of different people that
- 1:17:10really blew your mind at times. Like, oh, I didn't expect that.
- 1:17:13You know, I oh, wow. OK, that was out of the blue.
- 1:17:16What's his name? Rick?
- 1:17:18Rick Rodriguez. He said Ronald Reagan.
- 1:17:21I didn't see that one coming. No, that was but he said Ronald
- 1:17:24Reagan. Oh.
- 1:17:25No, that's. Ronald.
- 1:17:27Reagan Yes, yes, Wow. I have a reflexive answer, which
- 1:17:32is just summon the ghost of Lemmy, kill Mr. Let me sit with
- 1:17:35him for now because that'd be amazing.
- 1:17:37So I'd probably want to talk to Lemmy and get blasted with Lemmy
- 1:17:40in the middle of the day. Like not even it has to be day
- 1:17:42drinking with Lemmy. And I'd I'd want to be day
- 1:17:44drinking with Lemmy and I'd want to like try to top and do better
- 1:17:48in a conversation with Lemmy than the clip I saw of him and
- 1:17:51Billy Bob Thornton talking in the bar once, because that was a
- 1:17:53great a great conversation. But I want to I want to up Billy
- 1:17:56Bob and have a better conversation than Billy Bob did
- 1:17:58with him to kill Mr. that that would be.
- 1:18:00It fantastic Billy. Bob Thornton, that would be your
- 1:18:02Lemmy. Lemmy.
- 1:18:04Lemmy Yeah, but I'm, I'm referencing the conversation
- 1:18:07that I saw Billy Bob and Lemmy having in a bar, which I thought
- 1:18:09was great, but I I want to insert myself in there and kick
- 1:18:12Billy Bob out and then let me talk to Lemmy.
- 1:18:15You know what? That's why I love having a, a
- 1:18:18podcast with you, because you're like us, you hold nothing back.
- 1:18:23So, and, and I don't mean this, no L, GB, QTA, whatever it is
- 1:18:33correct, I want you to just sit there and go like this for a
- 1:18:38minute. There you go.
- 1:18:42Look at this motherfucker. This motherfucker is 52 years
- 1:18:45old and he's cut like he's fucking 30 years old.
- 1:18:51Bro, you are Jack. Man, you are Jack.
- 1:18:54Even when I saw you last. He is Jack, so I'm drinking
- 1:18:58coffee, not whiskey because I'm going to the gym right after
- 1:19:00this, so I've got to get my caffeine and nicotine before I
- 1:19:02go to my pump. There you go.
- 1:19:04There you go. Geez, I'm stuck right now
- 1:19:09because this mofo is jammed up, I said.
- 1:19:16I'm what? Are you guys, what are you, what
- 1:19:17are you guys smoking tonight? What are you guys smoking
- 1:19:19tonight? I am smoking.
- 1:19:20I just got done with my like Gloria Cabana R.
- 1:19:26Now I'm smoking the maca noodle. I had I had I might started my
- 1:19:31morning on the way to work with a very light cigar, a triple
- 1:19:36Maduro, a triple Maduro to start my morning very light cigar.
- 1:19:44I'm on my way to work On the way home.
- 1:19:47I had the American by Alec Bradley and I just finished the
- 1:19:52Nikka Roosta. I the last one, unfortunately I
- 1:19:57just finished that and I'm staring at my human door
- 1:19:59deciding what my next one's going to.
- 1:20:02Be So here's here's the thing with OG.
- 1:20:04Can I finish talking? Sure, I'm I'm going to call him
- 1:20:08now the vanilla chic instead of vanilla gorilla.
- 1:20:10But so I'm actually not Iron Chic.
- 1:20:16Not not not iron Gorilla, but vanilla chic.
- 1:20:18There we go. Go ahead.
- 1:20:19Vanilla chic. There we go.
- 1:20:20Vanilla chic. That's.
- 1:20:22My KFC Kentucky fire gear speak. What is that?
- 1:20:28The Kentucky fire theory. Oh wow, I've never, I've never
- 1:20:32seen that. That's interesting.
- 1:20:34Nice, nice. So.
- 1:20:36It's a very under appreciated. Cigar I want to give a shout out
- 1:20:40right now why we're here because I totally forgot to do that at
- 1:20:44the beginning to Glenn from the CEO of Jewish state he passed
- 1:20:50away today shout out to. Him.
- 1:20:53Because I love that dude. We met him at the Barn Smoker in
- 1:20:57Connecticut. He sat down with us, he hung out
- 1:21:00with us. Shout out to him, shout out to
- 1:21:04Jonathan, shout out to Maddie Rocks and everybody with Jewish
- 1:21:08steaks because I love Glenn. He was great and the guy knew
- 1:21:15what he was doing. And God bless him and his
- 1:21:18family. I pray that they take good care
- 1:21:22of everything that's going on and I hope to take care of Swiss
- 1:21:26sweets and Jewish steaks. That's all I got to say.
- 1:21:29And you got resting power. Resting power.
- 1:21:32Yes, Sir. So now let's get back to Matt.
- 1:21:35I thought that. Was all you had to say.
- 1:21:38Sorry, I let Joey talk. I'm just saying, you said it's
- 1:21:43all I have to say. I'll let Joey talk.
- 1:21:45Go ahead. I've got nothing right now, so
- 1:21:47go ahead. OK, side project.
- 1:21:49That's the answer. That's what I just lit up what
- 1:21:51I'm lighting up right now. There you go, Man O war, man O
- 1:21:54war. Man O war, I need one of those,
- 1:21:57by the way. I'll save one maybe.
- 1:22:00You'll save one of those and the two O 4 and 2:50.
- 1:22:04For me, I've done. I'll save you a 250.
- 1:22:09A 240. Sorry, 240. 250. 2:50 You want
- 1:22:13to save the. You got to save. 200.
- 1:22:17I'll save one for Joey too. Cool.
- 1:22:20And if I say Andrew, I'll save you a a 250 year anniversary
- 1:22:24cigar for good old USA there. We go.
- 1:22:28Let me ask you this question. How do I get you to come to my
- 1:22:32house? Come to my house, we discussed
- 1:22:38this. A bag of coke, dude.
- 1:22:39It's the answer. Excuse me, I'm talking to
- 1:22:43Andrew, not OG. How do I get you to come to my
- 1:22:46house, hang out, smoke cigars and have a couple of pops with
- 1:22:51me, Joey and OG? Well, we'll have to figure that
- 1:22:56out. I mean, you know, I'm, I'm not
- 1:22:57much of A traveler lately, but you know, I'm sure there'll be
- 1:23:00an event at some point where we're all going to align.
- 1:23:03I'm sure that will happen, right.
- 1:23:05So of course. That always happens at some
- 1:23:07point in time. Yeah.
- 1:23:10Well, we have a lady coming on this week, Anna S40 cigars,
- 1:23:17Serious 40 cigars. She's been up here twice and all
- 1:23:21twice we couldn't make it because we were.
- 1:23:27So I was trying to get her come up here this weekend.
- 1:23:30I'm hoping that she can come up because if so, I'll be in my
- 1:23:33backyard barbecue and smoking cigars with her.
- 1:23:36And I'm hoping that she comes up.
- 1:23:39I'm hoping. I'm praying.
- 1:23:41That'd be cool. So if that happens, O GS going
- 1:23:44to come down with his wife, we're going to have a BBQ, drink
- 1:23:48some beers, have a good time and hang out.
- 1:23:50O GS been in my house I used we used to live in a condo in
- 1:23:56November. Why you see the nice little
- 1:23:57change of scenery? Behind this House.
- 1:23:59Since the last time, yeah, a whole backyard hidden behind
- 1:24:04this curtain. Yeah, nice, nice.
- 1:24:06So I'm hoping that she can come up here.
- 1:24:10I got to ask her again this week.
- 1:24:12If she can, that's cool, We can have a BBQ.
- 1:24:15What is it? A lot of aromatic too, but it's
- 1:24:18in a corona side so. OG what else we got to ask my
- 1:24:25man? Nothing.
- 1:24:27But I want to add to that to that BBQ.
- 1:24:29If she does come. We do have this BBQ.
- 1:24:31I am going to go for the record and beat George Burns and have
- 1:24:3619 cigars in one day. That's my goal.
- 1:24:41How many do you smoke? Now guess what?
- 1:24:43I'm going to sit there Andrew, and I'm going to laugh at them
- 1:24:46and enjoy my 4 cigars spaced out throughout the day.
- 1:24:49Hey, I enjoy mine just as much as I enjoy mine just as much as
- 1:24:55you enjoy yours. I know that I'm just, I'm going
- 1:24:58to sit there and enjoy my 4 spaced out or five spaced out
- 1:25:01throughout my day while you're over there, you know?
- 1:25:04So now through a box. Now let's put this together for
- 1:25:07everybody. I'm like you, I'm built for
- 1:25:08comfort, not speed there. Let's put this together for
- 1:25:11everybody. Now.
- 1:25:12An event day is different then I'm.
- 1:25:14I I lose track after like 3. Let's put this together for
- 1:25:17everybody. Myself and OG are best friends.
- 1:25:24I don't care what anybody says. OG is one of my best friends and
- 1:25:30I will call him up at 3 O clock in the morning.
- 1:25:32He may not answer but he'll get my text and answer me back.
- 1:25:37Am I correct OG? That's correct.
- 1:25:40So all y'all people out there that don't think me and OG are
- 1:25:45not friends, we are. We are best friends and that is
- 1:25:49my brother and it is what it is. Y'all don't like us, y'all can
- 1:25:54go fuck yourself. I was talking to Joey and Joey
- 1:25:58told me boss was in the hospital.
- 1:26:01That, that's my favorite part of this podcast.
- 1:26:03I love when the host threatens the audience.
- 1:26:04That's the best. I love that.
- 1:26:08I was talking to Joey, I was talking to Joey, and I learned
- 1:26:12through Joey that Boss was in the hospital a few days back.
- 1:26:16While I'm talking to Joey, I'm texting Boss.
- 1:26:19I didn't call him because I didn't.
- 1:26:21He's in the hospital. I don't know if he could answer,
- 1:26:23but he at least have maybe his wife answer the text or
- 1:26:25whatever. And he answered me back
- 1:26:28instantly and said I'm fine brother, I'm fine.
- 1:26:32Don't. Think I don't answer?
- 1:26:35I do. It may take me a few minutes
- 1:26:37because like I said, and Joey tell you, I have a very short
- 1:26:41memory now since my strokes, but I'm doing OK, I'm doing all
- 1:26:48right. He's got to go with me when I go
- 1:26:51out to DoorDash. Well, I I go out too because
- 1:26:54honestly it's easy money and I don't have to do anything but
- 1:26:56work for myself like that. And he does.
- 1:27:01He works for himself. But I could go out and work 3-4
- 1:27:04hours and there's times I can make $150.00 and just come home
- 1:27:08and I'm done by like nine, 10:00 in the morning.
- 1:27:12So listen, you showed, you showed your flex.
- 1:27:15Look at this fucking muscle bro. It's not bad for getting sick,
- 1:27:19dude. Looking good.
- 1:27:20There you go. So let go.
- 1:27:22Let. Me, I'm putting mine down.
- 1:27:23I'm putting mine down. While while we're running down,
- 1:27:27I do like to ask this question though because it always
- 1:27:29intrigues me. We talked about your go to
- 1:27:32cigars. We talked about what brand you
- 1:27:34like or what's in your humid order.
- 1:27:36What is your favorite size to? Yes.
- 1:27:41Or go, what's your go to size? And then what is I guess your
- 1:27:45ideal size to smoke? I know people like Coronas,
- 1:27:48Churchills. So I'm I'm a little bit size
- 1:27:53retarded. I have a a size chart, a piece
- 1:27:56of art in my in my den and I still can't remember which size
- 1:28:01is which. I like Churchill's other than
- 1:28:03that, all the ones in the middle, what are they?
- 1:28:04Toro Gordo? I don't fucking know.
- 1:28:06I like all those ones. Usually the the the middle size
- 1:28:08range, but I like Churchill's too.
- 1:28:11He said the middle size range. I don't fucking know, but the
- 1:28:14thick ring gauges every once in a while, like a thick ring
- 1:28:17gauge, but you know, normal, you know the middle size.
- 1:28:20I don't know. I'm not.
- 1:28:22Going to remember that shit like that.
- 1:28:24Corona robusto Toro maybe? Robusto.
- 1:28:28Yeah, yeah, eating. That most.
- 1:28:30And then you're. You're 7 by 48.
- 1:28:32So exactly. So you know, all the all the the
- 1:28:35measurements I I don't, I don't remember I.
- 1:28:37I've learned through doing this podcast all of the different
- 1:28:41sizes than the the forgotten sizes and yeah, the the lesser
- 1:28:46known size that people don't use anymore, which I've already kind
- 1:28:50of thrown my brain around of how we can use those sizes since
- 1:28:53nobody else does. See, cigars are kind of like my
- 1:28:57car. I drive a nice Cadillac and I
- 1:28:59really, really like it. But don't ask me shit about how
- 1:29:02it runs. Don't ask me about the engine.
- 1:29:03Can ask me anything about it. I'll know fucking anything about
- 1:29:06it, except I enjoy it. Cigars are kind of like that for
- 1:29:08me. Like I'll know the name because
- 1:29:10I got to buy the name, but don't ask me sizes, blends out.
- 1:29:12Yeah, I don't really know a lot of that shit, you know what I
- 1:29:14mean? I just know what I like.
- 1:29:15And I say yeah, yeah, yeah, that one, that one, you know, But
- 1:29:17like, I'm not really good at all.
- 1:29:19All the stats. I don't go looking for specific
- 1:29:22sizes, like I'll forget names. Sometimes I'll be like, yeah,
- 1:29:25I'll just pick that one. Right.
- 1:29:28Like, you're supposed to know this.
- 1:29:29I'm like, yeah, I'm like, but I learned too much doing a lot of
- 1:29:32these shows. I'm like, I forget some of this
- 1:29:34shit. I'm like.
- 1:29:36But but but I respect I respect those that know it because I
- 1:29:38rely on them to tell me shit. But I don't know it you.
- 1:29:41Know so here's my thing so me and Joey me and Joey sit here
- 1:29:45and we talk to distributors, we talk to blenders, we've talked
- 1:29:50to everybody and everybody's like what do you guys like and
- 1:29:54I'm like I don't know I like this cigar they're like oh
- 1:29:57that's a 50 by 60 whatever it is I'm like yeah sure they're like
- 1:30:03no, it is I'm like. OK.
- 1:30:06That's what you're saying. I'm good with it.
- 1:30:09Exactly you. Know what I mean?
- 1:30:10Like how do I? How do I say no?
- 1:30:14Exactly. Yeah, like.
- 1:30:16Those really fancy names. And I'm like, you know, they're
- 1:30:19like, oh, this isn't a Lancero. It's Lonsdale.
- 1:30:23And it's not quite a Churchill. It's not I'm like, I'm like, OK.
- 1:30:28But again, it's it's like you said, it's like a car.
- 1:30:31It's like those little lesser known things or you know, sizes
- 1:30:35or parts that a lot of people forget about sometimes are the
- 1:30:39simplest ones to make your cigar, you know, to to use as a
- 1:30:44size for your brand that a lot of people don't.
- 1:30:47That's true. It could be a differentiator.
- 1:30:49Yeah, I can see that. But it's, it's how it's like you
- 1:30:51get to a certain point. It's like you get to be too much
- 1:30:53and it's like, I'm good. Yeah.
- 1:30:56How are we in time, boys? What we got?
- 1:31:00We got listen. Elder, 31.
- 1:31:02It's however long Andrew wants to.
- 1:31:03If Andrew. Wants to stay after.
- 1:31:05We can stay after. We can record this and put on
- 1:31:07YouTube. We can stay 3 hours.
- 1:31:10I don't have to. Go to the gym.
- 1:31:12I'm probably going to tap out when this is done, which is
- 1:31:14shortly, but OK OG since I'm a failure and I'm the rule, I'm
- 1:31:19I'm the kind of failure rules and I failed to bring my own
- 1:31:22book. Can you prop that up again?
- 1:31:24We can tell the the viewers where to where to get.
- 1:31:27It, yeah, and I'm going to do that, but I'm going to, I'm
- 1:31:29going to end it with this because this is my favorite
- 1:31:32quote and I'm quoting. I'm not paraphrasing.
- 1:31:35This was right at the beginning of the book.
- 1:31:36It says hard times create strong men, strong men create good
- 1:31:40times, good times create weak men and weak men create hard
- 1:31:45times. And that's by G Michael Hoth
- 1:31:49from the novel Those Who Remain. Listen, guys, gals, ladies and
- 1:31:56gentlemen, boys and girls and children of reading ages, you
- 1:31:59have to get this book and. Get it?
- 1:32:03Failure. Rules.
- 1:32:04You get books online, all formats, hardcover, paperback,
- 1:32:09e-book, and then a great audio book with some good narration.
- 1:32:13It's not me, but it's a voice, voice guy, and he's really,
- 1:32:16really good. Good urgency and cadence to his
- 1:32:18voice. You know, anywhere you find
- 1:32:20online, if you like it, post a good review.
- 1:32:23If you don't like it, post a good review anyway and lie.
- 1:32:25That's what I would ask, and I hope you'd go pick up the book.
- 1:32:31If you need inspiration, just check out my review.
