- 0:00SPEAKER_00: I started my fast on this Sunday.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Today is Thursday, so I'm four days in.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: It's a water fast.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: I do have black coffee.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: I do put a little bit of artificial sweetener in there, that splend of the syrup that you might get from a Starbucks or something like that.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Again, I don't see that it affects me or makes me more hungry.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: I've talked to friends of mine that also fast as a routine.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: And when they have anything artificial, the Truvia or anything to add to their coffee or tea, it does make them more hungry.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: So it creates a more of a willpower demand than if you don't use it or just drink black or plain things.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Also, I drink electrolyte powder.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Um, the Gatorade type, it's probably not great, but there are no carbs in it, no sugars in it.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: That's something else that I do to kind of take away a little bit of the hunger pains.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: My weak point when I'm fasting is typically in the evening time.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty good most of the morning, most of the mid-afternoon, into later afternoon.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: And then also if I get good news or if I'm happy, then that emotional thing comes in.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: I say, oh my gosh, well, why not break it today?
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Because I've been doing so good.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Again, that's where we get into problems.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: So you got to muscle through these things.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: And if you make a deal with yourself, it really helps me to fulfill the deal, know when that end date's going to be and live up to it, unless you're experiencing some kind of a major health problem because of your fasting, then of course you want to stop and go seek your medical attention.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: And even I would probably hit up your doctor before you start fasting as part of your lifestyle to make sure if you're taking meds, taking some kind of pills out there.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Those pills are probably going to have a different effect when your digestive system is shut down.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: You have a lot of energy going to the digestion of food.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: But if you shut your digestive, digestive system down, then that energy goes to metabolizing other things, the stored issues, the stored, the bad cells in your body through autophagy.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: I'm on day four, so I'm pretty thick into autophagy.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: How long can I go?
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: That's going to depend on how long I have fat to burn.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: And I have the fat that is on my frame in the form of 3,500 calories per pound.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: So I could go quite a few days burning off that fat.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: What I find some folks are asking, how much am I losing?
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: So I burned through a lot of water, so about 15 pounds so far, but a lot of that is water weight because before I went into this fast, I wasn't key in ketosis.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: I wasn't eating keto or paleo, if you will.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: But basically, my keto level for myself is under 20 grams a day or so.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: So I try not to exceed that.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: And a lot of that's going to be with artificial sweeteners that I might use in coffee and these sorts of things.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Some have zero, the liquids I've noticed have zero.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: But again, these aren't great for you.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: They create a little bit of a dopamine hit.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: So I understand that that's going on in my system, but they don't make me overly hungry.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: I've never monitored my blood glucose to see what happens when I have artificial sweeteners, because there is, there are studies that have been done when somebody tastes something sweet, their insulin spikes and it hits the body with some insulin.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: I don't know how true that is, but I don't have any calories coming in, so I'm okay with that, at least for me, my personal experience.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: But as you are fasting, you'll find out that you'll get hungry around those times of day that you typically eat.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Just like in the evening time, I usually have one meal a day when I'm not fasting.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: I try not to eat anything more than that.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: I notice that I my weight does creep up pretty good when I do eat multiple times per day now.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: So that one meal is usually pretty good and I have it loaded with protein.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: So I'm getting a full day's worth of protein and calories typically in one meal.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: And if I have to have a couple protein shakes before after to try to keep my muscle in check, then I do that as well.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: But muscle, you talk to the doctors out there, I know that they're recommending certain amounts of protein to build muscle.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: I find that I'm okay just eating the way that I eat.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: I try to eat my body weight in grams of protein.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Usually in one meal, that's difficult, but I'll usually have a protein shake, but have a smaller window in the refeed cycle.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: After a fast like this, I don't know how long I'm gonna go.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: I'm at day four, complete day four now.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: I might go seven, ten, twelve days, but I really don't know.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: This is kind of my yearly fasting cleanse to kind of get myself in check.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: I started just about 300 pounds.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: I was 285 this morning.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: I'll probably shrink that down to 260, 250.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: I just have to see how I feel.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: At my lowest after fasting, I was in the 230s, 235.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: And I didn't have nearly the amount of muscle that I have now.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: I put some on.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: I'm curious to see what I'm gonna feel like and look like when I get there.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: But this is something that I've accepted as part of my life, and I never thought this would be the case because I was fat most of it.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: I had some battling in there, but I know that my best results prior to the fasting was caloric restriction, but it was so painfully difficult.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: And I just learned recently, I've known this for a little bit, but I've had doctors talk about it how the metabolism reduces when you go caloric restriction.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: And it doesn't take very long for the body to catch on, so it reduces your metabolism.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: So then when you start refeeding or eating again, your body already has a low metabolism, so you're gonna put on quite a bit of weight pretty quickly.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: With the fasting, the body goes the other direction where it ramps up the metabolism, speeds it up because it thinks you're starving.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: And well, you are starving because you're not eating, but your body has a system in place for people that starve, and it's called stored body fat.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: So if you have a lot of stored body fat, you've been living in a caloric surplus for a long time to be able to store up that extra energy.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: To access it, you have to try to caloric restrict, but it's difficult, especially if you're eating carbohydrates and sugars, because your body fails to get access to it for the most part because it never enters this stage or thing called ketosis.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Ketosis is where the body switches fuel systems from burning sugar and glucose over to burning fat.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: And that's going to be the stored body fat that's on your frame.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: To get access to it, you need to enter that state of ketosis, and fasting does that very well.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: But fasting also has other mechanisms because you're not eating, growth hormone goes up, and it has a lot of other things, hormonal responses to the starvation that actually are beneficial for keeping muscle, and also the longer you do it, it'll start eating at the dead and bad cells in your body.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Start devouring them for energy as well, so you get that cleansing and healing thing.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Talk to your doctor.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Maybe this isn't great for you, maybe it's something that's going to create problems for you.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: But for me, fasting really was my lifesaver.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: And as you can see, I still do it.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: The mental clarity is amazing, the focus is amazing as long as you can fight yourself through this cycle.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: I'll give you an example.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: I go out and it's early in the morning.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: I go out to purchase some chicken backs for soup that'll be made in a few days to kind of break the fast.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: It's like bone marrow.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: You kind of boil it and put some vegetables in there.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Just something to break the fast before I jump into fully eating again with protein and eggs and whatever it is that I typically will start to eat when I refeed.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: But during this time, as I go out, there's a donut place, right?
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: And then I think, well, maybe if I'll just have donuts, I can resume the fast tomorrow.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: That's a problem.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Or when it gets later in the evening, I say, well, maybe I'll have some pizza and I'll just resume the fast tomorrow.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: These things don't stop.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: They are my past habits that made me super fat, super obese, super unhealthy.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: Where a nurse one time told me I was a walking heart attack because my triglycerides in my blood were so high.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: I still have that in my brain.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: It's still something that I want to do.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: Um, I drank for quite a while.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: And the alcohol even doesn't carry as high of a desire for me as the food does.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: The alcohol, I was able to put it away because I know any amount for me is bad.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: No alcohol at all.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: So I guess that might be the difference.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: With food, you need food.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: So when I decide to fast for longer periods of time, those little gremlins crawling around in my melon, they love to tease me.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: So I acknowledge them.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: I say, oh, that's a good try.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, you're right.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: Those donuts would hit the spot.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: They would feel so good to eat.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, that ice cream would be perfect.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: That hot pizza.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: When you eat a lot of pizza, that that feeling you get in your mouth where there's you almost lose sensitivity because you've eaten so much, I remember that.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: So I fight that.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: That's willpower.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: And how I do it is I try to move on to the next thing.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: I also tell myself, wow, good job.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: You know, you're feeling good, you have more mental clarity, you're able to see things differently.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: And really, if you're into this whole willpower thing, this whole consciousness thing, I should say, this being now, this is when abundance can come because your body is mainly focused on cleansing itself.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: But you give a lot more power to your brain because you're not busy digesting food.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Now that's a theory, I don't know how true that is, but I do notice that I get more clear, my eyesight gets sharper, I can smell things a lot better, especially when somebody is in my periphery preparing or cooking food.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: It's and I'm in a fast, especially a longer fast.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: Oh, I can pick up that when they, you know, crack the first salt or the first pepper on whatever it is they're preparing.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: I can feel it.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: Anyway, hopefully something in this video helped you.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Fasting isn't easy.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: I found it seems to be the best to really get rid of that body fat, that belly fat, that visceral fat.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: It seems to work.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Some people asked, as I was gonna start with before, how much can you lose a day?
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: Well, if a pound of fat is 3,500 calories, and there's some people fighting that as well, but let's say that's what it is.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: The maximum you're gonna burn on a fast is whatever your caloric expenditure is of the day.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: But if you're not eating anything, all of that's gonna be coming from fat stores.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: So that's your maximum fat burn is being fasted.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: That's gonna be your maximum.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Now there's also dry fasting, which you basically don't drink any water or liquids for a particular period of time.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: That one, just be weary, talk to your doctor, do your research.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: What's happening in that process?
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: That's a lot.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: But that's something that I wouldn't embark on until I mean you had fasted so often, so much, and you have that medical supervision to be able to watch you through something like that.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: But I'm talking a regular water fast where you're drinking nothing but water, maybe black coffee, maybe some type of tea, no sweetener, nothing in there, nor caloric content in any of the food.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: You're talking whatever your caloric expenditure of the day, three-quarters of a pound, maybe a pound a day, depending on what you're burning, your activity level is what you're going to be able to lose, and that's maximum.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: You can't touch that with caloric restriction.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: And especially now that the studies have been done, we see that in the studies metabolism actually increases in a starvation type fast when you're not eating versus caloric expenditure when you're trying to reduce your calories to a certain point.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: It seems like your body adjusts and lowers the metabolism.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: I'm Connor.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: We'll see you in the next one.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: Thank you for watching.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Be well.
