  Speaker A: Watch out.
• 0:01
Speaker B: Well, we've already started. Sorry. We have folks, you missed the fun part. No. This is Hillary and Dusty and Andy back with Todd. Hey y'. All.
• 0:08
  Speaker C: Howdy. Howdy.
• 0:09
  Speaker A: Hey there
• 0:10
Speaker B: with dry side dispatch once again on Friday. So we were just talking about doing, recording some type of little ads so y' all know during the week who's going to be coming up. So you could anticipate Todd's lovely voice. Yeah.
• 0:25
Speaker D: Well, Todd, we're back. And
• 0:27
Speaker C: once again we're back to the dry side.
• 0:29
  Speaker A: Yes,
• 0:29
Speaker C: it was. You couldn't have been on a couple weeks ago?
• 0:32
  Speaker A: No. Hey
• 0:32
Speaker D: man, it's it. We, we've got some rain.
• 0:35
Speaker C: It's been nice. I've actually got wheat coming up and everything. No,
• 0:39
Speaker D: it's, there's people drilling wheat. You know, they've got pretty much this cotton's getting filled at like five or ten pounds an acre and people are just falling in there. And since they changed the insurance guidelines on this dry land, they're drilling wheat, boss. Ever up and down every road I see wheat's going in and cotton hadn't been stripped yet.
• 0:57
Speaker C: I'm telling you what, them changing the, the guidelines for cover crops, that's mostly it occurred because of stuff up, up north where they're trying to keep nitrogen in the soil. But since it's a USDA and it's a blanket deal, it sure makes it nice to put weed on stuff.
• 1:12
Speaker B: So what? So what are you talking about
• 1:14
  Speaker C: COVID drops?
• 1:15
Speaker D: Well, you mean you want to explain it or you want to explain it?
• 1:18
  Speaker C: You go ahead.
• 1:18
Speaker D: Well, so prior to like two, three years ago, if you planted wheat on dry land, if there was more than like 5% of the wheat that headed out, they would not insure the cotton. Okay. Because they said that it robbed them soil moisture from it. And you know, like that's not, that's a way to ensure a failure is what they said. And honestly as a long time farmer, I felt the same way. I was like there's no. Because you know when you do irrigated and stuff that started a long time ago when you put it in weed it just. Anyway. Well, they changed it two, three years ago to where you just have to kill it 30 days before you plan it. And I will say that I am shocked at if, you know, if we either get rain and we have a crop or we like don't get rain and don't have a crop. I haven't seen any difference, honestly, in the stuff that has wheat on it than the, than, than the farms that Are this clean, teal, bare ground.
• 2:14
Speaker C: You know, I. I can say I have. But it's. And it's better. Yeah. Because it doesn't blow out in the spring.
• 2:19
Speaker D: Well. And when. What do I. What we don't usually like a tenth or two of rain doesn't do nothing for us. Right. When we get like 2 inches of rain like that, what happens. This is just my opinion is that that standing wheat makes that water infiltrate instead of running all off to the bar ditches. And so a guy that has clean tilt stuff doesn't get. But maybe half the benefit of that. Where a guy that's got wheat. If you get one. I always said if you get 12 inch rain, then you're even with everybody else. Once that. Once that wheat's killed. And that hat. That happens a lot in the spring and we're planting, you know, they're planting later and later and later with. Because these varieties are faster and faster and
• 2:59
Speaker C: faster. They're just. And they're just better at using water.
• 3:02
Speaker A: Yeah. It's kind of interesting because we threw some things completely off the curve this year.
• 3:06
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 3:09
Speaker A: Oh, yeah. So a couple of things. One, back to your point. So I did some work when I was at Vernon at the Chillicothe farm. The biggest key is if you look at. So every crop has its moisture use curve and they're all bell shaped. Basically no matter what it is, it's just when it occurs. Well, wheat, it's. Once it flowers and that seed starts developing, well, that's after it heads out. So if you
• 3:34
  Speaker D: get it
• 3:35
Speaker A: prior to that seed starting to be developed, even though it's headed out, you're cutting out a big part of that moisture. Right.
• 3:43
Speaker D: Right. And you. Because. So there's a. There's like a happy medium that you have to go to because if you spray it too early, it goes to nothing. It doesn't give you anything. So you want a little bit of a stalk. A little bit. Right. When it's. You start seeing like 5% of it or 10 of it starting to boot. You know, it takes round up what 10 days or two weeks seems like to kill wheat and it'll still grow a little bit like that. Seems like the. The good
• 4:07
Speaker A: times deal is you want that slower kill. The best thing is even if you're not trying to kill things like mare's tail or no. Right. Like that you're better with a lower rate. The slower that kill is, the better that stalk will stand up.
• 4:19
Speaker D: Really. That's very important. I think that. I think you're going to see a lot. I've. I've got a friend that. That does not do anything. And I'm. I have a farm that he farms and he gripes every year about how much it blows. And I'm like, it's the perfect time. Go drill wheat right now.
• 4:34
Speaker A: Oh, yeah. And that's the deal. Like this year, last year, you know,
• 4:38
Speaker D: there was no opportunity. Yeah.
• 4:39
Speaker A: I mean, even if you set it out there, it was January. Yeah. It came up anyway. Yeah. There
• 4:43
Speaker D: was no opportunity to do it.
• 4:44
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 4:45
Speaker C: It's. You know, it's funny, I just got back in from. Back from Kansas and I was the. And I was not working. I was trying to hunt pheasants, but
• 4:55
  Speaker A: now I'm jealous.
• 4:55
  Speaker C: Yeah,
• 4:56
  Speaker D: I know.
• 4:56
Speaker C: It was a great trip.
• 4:57
Speaker D: Well, I missed the one before because I was chasing redfish, so. There you go. Yeah.
• 5:05
Speaker B: While you weren't working those two weeks, they were, you know.
• 5:07
Speaker C: But the guy that owned, the gentleman that owns the God service up there is a farmer and he raises soybeans and corn primarily. But it's kind of funny because him raising soybeans and corn up there is kind of like raising cotton and peanuts down here. You plant your peanuts or he plants his corn and we're focused on that. And then the cotton, you just water it enough to get it up. And that's what they do with the soybeans. And I said, well, how's it going? He said, well, we got some really nice rains early and then we got nothing until September. So it's. Their yields are. Their corn yields are about 100 bushels. He said, that's about half what they normally make. And I'm not going
• 5:42
Speaker D: that dry land or irrigated.
• 5:44
  Speaker C: Irrigated,
• 5:45
  Speaker D: yeah,
• 5:45
Speaker C: Irrigated, they make about 200 bushel irrigation. What he said. But they'll take all their water allotment and put it on a half circle of corn. Right. You know, a little bit over here and then the rest of it. Were
• 5:55
Speaker D: you in western Kansas or eastern
• 5:56
Speaker C: sublet Kansas between Liberal and Garden City?
• 5:59
Speaker D: Right. You could tell me
• 6:00
Speaker C: just due north of am Basically north and slightly central
• 6:03
  Speaker D: west
• 6:04
  Speaker C: Central just a
• 6:05
  Speaker D: tad. Pretty
• 6:06
  Speaker C: much
• 6:06
  Speaker D: central.
• 6:06
Speaker C: Just a little bit south of dead center of the state. Okay. Pretty much. Okay. And a little bit west.
• 6:11
Speaker D: So east of whatever the. Or west of whatever the line that we. That you see on the maps where it's green from the other side. Like.
• 6:17
  Speaker A: Yes.
• 6:18
Speaker D: Everyone see Omaha and like through that way, it's like they get a lot more rain.
• 6:22
Speaker C: Eastern Kansas and western Kansas are Very, very different.
• 6:25
  Speaker D: Yes,
• 6:26
Speaker C: very different. But it's, it's interesting. But it was interesting him talking about that. And he's, he's. I, we're talking about when we first got there Monday, I was talking to him about it and you were talking about yield and stuff. And like the next on Wednesday morning he comes, we get ready to go and he's like, hey, we got, we just stripped our first soybean patch. And I said how did it do? And he said 23 bushels.
• 6:45
  Speaker D: Oh.
• 6:46
Speaker C: And he said it did terrible. I was like, well I said how's your insurance? And he's like I've got good insurance.
• 6:52
  Speaker A: Yeah,
• 6:53
Speaker C: but it's, I mean it's, you know, it's the same story. It's the same song, different verse, just in a different place. But there it was interesting because their rainfall pattern was, I mean it was almost exactly the same as what happened at my vineyard. I mean we got one month of rain and then we got no rain and then we got,
• 7:10
Speaker D: I think that was pretty much like I, I state wide, Central plains wide from North Dakota to here. It feels, I feel like everybody got stuff planted but like they got rains at like wrong time. Yeah, but I think the ice age are still doing. They're, I
• 7:25
  Speaker C: mean they're still
• 7:26
  Speaker D: gonna do good.
• 7:27
Speaker C: Yeah. Some of that stuff they of rain late. Those ice states, I mean they got a lot.
• 7:32
  Speaker D: Yeah, I've seen
• 7:33
Speaker A: they've gotten a lot of this that we've been getting.
• 7:35
Speaker D: Yeah. And it's like turning their soybeans kind of dark colored and stuff, you know.
• 7:39
  Speaker C: Yeah, but.
• 7:41
Speaker A: And that ground doesn't dry out real good.
• 7:43
Speaker D: No it doesn't. It takes. That's where you see those ones on Tik Tok where they're like stuck and they have like five tractors and an excavator trying to pull it. Pull out a combine backwards.
• 7:52
Speaker C: Yeah, I'm not going. I don't think I've ever seen it. They're like, oh, we got rain. So we're hoping we don't get stuck. And they get stuck and they're like, oh you guys, I've got to pull all this stuff out and I'm not going. Well here. If it rains like that, we just wait two days and pick.
• 8:05
Speaker D: Well, it depends on where you are. If you're south of south or south of ropes anyway, you can do that. But
• 8:11
Speaker C: Gaines county, you just wait till it stops.
• 8:13
Speaker D: Yeah, yeah. You better be there as soon as you see the rainbow and start plowing stuff or it's going to be blowing in another hour.
• 8:21
Speaker C: But it was interesting to watch, you know, to see how much. Then he was talking about their water restrictions and they've got. And of course this being on this and it being forefront of my brain and it also being on the Oglala. Let's talk to him. Every one of their wells has got a meter at it. And they get. Right now, I think he said that they get 34 acre inches of irrigation is what they can pull out of it. And this was supposed to be the first year they were cutting it to 24 inches acre inches. But they pushed those back either to 27 or 28. I can't remember which one. He said, but they pushed those back. But I asked him, I said, how could you grow corn? Because in case you don't that don't know, corn takes a little bit of water. General rule of thumb is plant it, get it up, put a goldfish in furrow, keep the goldfish alive. That's the rule of thumb. And so you're talking something on the order of probably, I'm going to guess 48 inches.
• 9:23
  Speaker D: I don't know, maybe 36.
• 9:25
Speaker A: 36 used to be kind of the max. I mean a lot of that they're raising now with some of the technology. They're down in the say 25 range.
• 9:32
  Speaker C: That's good.
• 9:33
  Speaker B: Well, that's good.
• 9:34
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 9:35
  Speaker B: Really.
• 9:35
Speaker D: So you can take that 25 inches. They get acre inches. And then if they get 10 inches of
• 9:41
  Speaker C: right
• 9:41
  Speaker D: of rainfall.
• 9:43
Speaker C: I asked him, I asked him if he could grow corn on 24 inch. On 24 acre inches on a circle. And he said not, he said I can't grow a full circle on it. But he said everybody's ever, you know, he said the thing about that most all their land out there was fur, was flood irrigated. Had been for you just flat. Oh,
• 9:57
Speaker D: so it's not in the
• 9:58
Speaker C: sandhills. It's not. It's not. It looks kind of sand until you start actually going out and looking at it. You're like, hey, that's actually not sand. It's just a different color soil. Yeah. Than what you're looking what you see out here. But they, so they, they based how much water they got off of what has historically been agricultural irrigated, which was corner to corner. And then everybody had gone in and put in pivots and so but they. So that you get 100 like on a quarter, you get 160 acres of water. So you get whatever 24 inch, whatever. Right. Two acres. So it's 25
• 10:34
  Speaker D: of plus
• 10:35
  Speaker C: 300. It's
• 10:35
Speaker D: 125 of whatever they say you can say you could put on the circle then.
• 10:39
Speaker C: Yeah, you got, you got 32 acre acre. You got 32 acre feet of water per quarter.
• 10:46
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 10:47
Speaker C: Is it. So that's, you know, and. But then they go in, they put that into a pivot and then they put. Split the pivot in half and then you got.
• 10:53
  Speaker D: That's a lot.
• 10:54
Speaker C: That. Yeah, that's. That's a good amount of water in there. But, you know,
• 10:59
Speaker A: doing what they're. We're doing, it's just. We're doing it on our own because we don't have enough. Well,
• 11:03
Speaker D: that. Yeah, I mean, it's like I always say, like, because I was with a guy the other day and he was not from here and he was like asking me like the aquifer, and he's like, well, you know, it went way down and now it's like, not like it's not really going down a whole lot more. And I said, well, it's kind of like when you get to the end of your big Gulp, like if you start getting bubbles and stuff like, like that, it's like that's where we are. We just literally would go down faster if we could pull more out. But we've got to an equilibrium point. I'm not saying, I mean, I know it probably goes down some, but I mean like, we literally got to where it's hard for us to pull out enough water to lower it. And you, you probably know, you go to those conferences. I
• 11:40
Speaker B: was just thinking like, so in Kansas, it's my understanding that, so that, you know, these districts will have districts like we do, and it's those, the farmers that are getting in there and making those decisions to do that. Well,
• 11:51
Speaker C: they're all. I mean, it is the same kind of way as you have a Soil Conservation District where they elect people to it. It's the same kind of thing. And there's edicts that come down from on high that they're going to have to work within that time frame. It's not like they're voluntarily cutting off half their land, you know.
• 12:10
Speaker D: Well, the High Plains Water District tried to do that a few years ago and that didn't go over very well.
• 12:15
Speaker B: Oh, really? I didn't know that.
• 12:16
Speaker D: You don't remember when they were going to put meters on every well and every pivot and High Plains and every little town hall that had like 500 people in it that were pitchforks saying, you ain't touching my water. I paid blah, blah, blah for the. This land, and it's got this much water. And by God, if Ozarka can pump what they can want to pump, I'm pumping what I want to pump. I mean, I. Maybe.
• 12:38
  Speaker B: No, I don't. Maybe that
• 12:39
Speaker D: was five years ago or maybe six. Maybe
• 12:41
Speaker B: it's 10. It must have been longer than that, because it must have been when I was. No,
• 12:45
Speaker D: it was a bit. It was a big deal. There was.
• 12:47
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 12:48
Speaker D: And they ended. And they ended. I'm thinking they ended up not. Well, I know they ended up not doing it.
• 12:51
Speaker B: Oh, no, that don't. Yeah. Yeah. I do think some people have meters, but it's not. Because anybody has to.
• 12:56
  Speaker D: No.
• 12:57
Speaker B: But I think it's going to be interesting to me, you know, that there's a. There's a supreme court ruling, I don't know, in the, like, maybe 20, 23. And it was two states arguing over an aquifer, and one, I
• 13:13
Speaker D: think that was in Georgia in,
• 13:14
Speaker B: like, Tennessee or something. That was.
• 13:16
  Speaker C: I
• 13:17
  Speaker A: don't think it wasn't it.
• 13:19
  Speaker C: That
• 13:19
Speaker D: was. That was. That. That was a
• 13:21
Speaker C: river. Yeah. Surface water.
• 13:23
Speaker B: Yeah. This is a. This is a. An aquifer. And I think it was Mississippi.
• 13:28
Speaker D: I kind of think it was like the Chattahoochee river, like the Appalachicola or something like that. But they were arguing. They were arguing about it. It was. Yeah.
• 13:36
Speaker A: Because I think Georgia's there. They were pumping groundwater, I think. But that affects
• 13:40
  Speaker D: the
• 13:40
  Speaker A: Chattahoochee. Yeah,
• 13:42
  Speaker D: yeah.
• 13:43
Speaker A: And Florida was like.
• 13:44
  Speaker D: Yeah,
• 13:45
Speaker A: I've got to stop.
• 13:46
  Speaker D: Yeah,
• 13:47
  Speaker B: yeah,
• 13:48
Speaker D: yeah. Well, at least
• 13:49
Speaker A: I think part of that was from a tourism standpoint.
• 13:51
  Speaker D: Oh, yeah, yeah.
• 13:54
Speaker A: Water in the. Or in the river.
• 13:56
  Speaker D: That's right. Yeah.
• 13:57
Speaker B: This is a different case. This is Mississippi and tenness. And it was. The Supreme Court, let's see here, had sided with Mississippi because it created chaos in the long established world of interstate water allocations. The term groundwater, of course, is fresh water that's stored underneath the ground, and it makes up about 50% of their municipality. So let's see. The case started in 2014Mississippi sued Tennessee for allegedly stealing its underground water by allowing Memphis Water utility Company to pump from the middle Claiborne aquifer, which sets.
• 14:37
Speaker D: Yeah, that's what you're talking about. Yeah.
• 14:40
Speaker B: Yeah. So the Supreme Court ruled that the legal doctrine of equitable appropriation. How do you say that?
• 14:53
Speaker D: Well, I gotta get my glasses on. Hold on a second. Yeah. Appropriate appro. Appropriate appro.
• 14:59
Speaker B: That's right. What Is what is that?
• 15:05
  Speaker C: In case
• 15:05
  Speaker B: you're wondering,
• 15:06
  Speaker C: everyone.
• 15:06
Speaker D: No, it's not appropriate.
• 15:09
  Speaker B: Appropriate.
• 15:11
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 15:11
Speaker B: Our word for today,
• 15:14
  Speaker A: that's legal.
• 15:16
Speaker D: And you know what? I will tell you this. Like, Claude does not do very good with legalese. It does not like the wherefores and here toos and thereofs. And like, it doesn't. So that. That would be a word that Claude would not know what. What it was.
• 15:28
Speaker B: So in other words, I've
• 15:29
Speaker D: never seen that used and I've never seen that somebody did that just to make people think they're small.
• 15:34
Speaker B: No one can claim all the water for themselves. It's basically, they're saying it's a shared resource,
• 15:40
Speaker D: but how do you get around that? And then like people in California, it's been one in the Supreme Court where like some dude went and nailed a piece of wood to a tree in 1880 and said, the Smith family takes all the water rights for, blah, blah, blah, and it went and they won. Like, they beat the state.
• 15:58
Speaker B: So this is state. So it says now in order to claim legal ownership of both interstate groundwater and surface water, states will need to go through the equitable appropriation.
• 16:10
  Speaker D: Appropriation
• 16:12
Speaker B: process to determine who gets what.
• 16:14
  Speaker A: Oh, wow.
• 16:15
Speaker C: Well, it's going to be interesting because.
• 16:16
Speaker B: So I. That's what makes me think, like, at what point, like, we're the only state that's not going regulating it. Like, at what point do we get sued by everybody? Oh, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas,
• 16:29
  Speaker D: you know,
• 16:29
Speaker C: you want. Let me tell you why it won't.
• 16:31
  Speaker D: Why?
• 16:32
Speaker C: Because we're on the shallow end. I
• 16:34
Speaker D: was going to say, like, they're taking from us. I was like, well, we're not doing anything to take water from nobody.
• 16:39
  Speaker C: As
• 16:40
Speaker A: you said earlier, we're at the bottom of it.
• 16:44
Speaker B: Don't be taking water.
• 16:45
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 16:46
Speaker C: Thing that I will tell you is that guy told me that along the Kansas Oklahoma border there are pivots. And the guy owns land in Canton on both sides of the border. And they pump the water, pump water from Oklahoma to their pivots in Kansas because Oklahoma doesn't have it. And there. So they don't have any of the regulations on their Kansas pivots because the water's coming from Oklahoma. Now, something like that would be something. Well, so that guy
• 17:10
Speaker D: that. Remember when Boone Pickens bought all of Roberts county or whatever, he was going to send it all to Fort Worth and then that, like, they stopped that and he had to
• 17:17
Speaker B: like, got all our water from.
• 17:19
Speaker D: Well, because we bought it.
• 17:21
  Speaker B: That's what I'm saying. For
• 17:22
Speaker D: A municipal, but the municipality bought it. Yeah, they put, they take it and I don't think pumping into Meredith or what they do with it, I
• 17:29
  Speaker C: don't know.
• 17:29
Speaker D: But he was going to do it as like a business like where, like there was, it was a for profit business where he was going to sell water and. But it was all crooked because it was like eight people live in that county and he's formed a water board and if I'm saying this wrong, don't sue me. This is
• 17:45
  Speaker C: hearsay.
• 17:46
Speaker D: This is hearsay. But yeah, so they, they created their own water board and decided they were going to take it. And of course now, I mean there's so many lakes and stuff around, around that area that Dallas, Fort Worth that I don't know if they would need. I think he thought something was coming that maybe didn't come to fruition.
• 18:03
Speaker B: Probably would have if he'd, I mean if they were selling, doing it right now,
• 18:06
  Speaker A: well, I'd be
• 18:07
Speaker B: lining up for it. I
• 18:08
Speaker A: think part of that had out of basin also.
• 18:10
Speaker D: That's what it was. It was because they're moving it from bait. That's, that's what got them where they were moving
• 18:15
Speaker A: it saves the guy.
• 18:16
  Speaker C: Yeah,
• 18:17
Speaker A: yeah. Because that's the same,
• 18:19
  Speaker D: same basin.
• 18:20
  Speaker C: Yeah,
• 18:20
Speaker D: yeah, I think you're right. That's what. Because he was trying to move it hundreds of miles, you know, so.
• 18:27
Speaker B: Well, I, I've wondered if this like that Supreme Court ruling, like you look and see what's happening in California, like if that's why they're having to say we have to split it up equally. You know, I,
• 18:38
Speaker A: Yeah, I mean that to me reads like that, not your water.
• 18:42
  Speaker C: Yeah,
• 18:42
Speaker B: that's exactly what that reads. I mean it's a shared resource. So you better figure out how you're going to share it equally among everybody.
• 18:49
  Speaker C: Yeah,
• 18:50
Speaker B: but you know, to me equal is not always fair. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. I mean it all doesn't. Equal doesn't always mean like the same to me. That's what I, I mean in my mind.
• 19:02
Speaker A: Well, it's not. Well,
• 19:02
  Speaker C: equal
• 19:03
Speaker A: farm doesn't have the same amount of water.
• 19:06
Speaker B: That's what just about to say that.
• 19:08
Speaker D: What if your neighbor's got like two really good wells and you don't.
• 19:12
Speaker B: That's what I'm saying. That's what I'm saying. You know what I mean? Like if he's got two wells. It doesn't. If equal. Equal means. Yeah. Then you know,
• 19:21
Speaker D: my next day you're reading my mind. What if he paid 5000 and the other guy paid 1500 or whatever.
• 19:27
  Speaker C: That's why, that's.
• 19:29
Speaker D: Yeah, I want your water.
• 19:30
Speaker C: That's why, that's why I say that any of that stuff is going to run into the takings clause of the Constitution because you're taking, you're taking something from someone and you can't constitutionally, you cannot just take something. I mean,
• 19:43
  Speaker B: historically
• 19:44
Speaker A: been theirs, especially within the state.
• 19:46
  Speaker D: Yeah,
• 19:47
  Speaker C: it's some, it's some, it's, it's eight shades of a mess.
• 19:49
Speaker B: Well, and this may only impact like cross state lines, you know what I mean? And so I'm not, I'm not illegal.
• 19:56
Speaker D: Well, that's why I don't like when we were up, we went up to Yellowstone and stuff too, earlier this year and like. Oh, there's all these rivers are huge. Like the Palisades Lake is huge. The Snake river runs into it. But it's in Montana. But it was built by farmers in Idaho. So all of that water that run. There's. I think there's 13 dams on the Snake river that are all for Idaho potato production. Yeah, like it's, but they're in different states. It's like when I go fly fishing in Colorado, like they, there's just certain things that the amount of water that they have to continue to let down through the river even if their lake runs dry because that water is somehow California's or Nevada's. Like, it's, I don't know, it's beyond me like how they can, how they can do that.
• 20:44
Speaker C: There's a lake somewhere down like the southern end of the hill country. And you'll have to forgive me because I saw this and I did do some research on it, but it's been, you know, I've selected the
• 20:54
Speaker B: views and opinions of the host of this show are
• 20:57
  Speaker C: not
• 20:57
  Speaker B: correct.
• 20:59
Speaker C: Insane. But anyway, this lake was the, the lake was built for, by, I think it was like a water district or farmers group down in the valley and it was maybe rice farmers for
• 21:12
Speaker D: like down like Harlingen area or were you talking about like palacious area? Because I think it's. It had to be a little bit further.
• 21:18
Speaker C: It was, it was further north than, than like the valley. It was, but it was similar. I can't remember. I want to say it was rice, but I don't know if that's for sure. Anyway, it had been, it had been low for when people had built it, built houses on it and stuff. And it filled up. Name
• 21:32
  Speaker D: the lake. It
• 21:33
Speaker C: filled up. And they were in the People that, you know, the people operate the reservoir were saying, hey, we're gonna have to drain it because we found a problem with the dam or something like that. And all the people around the people that built houses on it were like, no, keep. You've got to keep water in this thing for our houses. And they're like, no. Yeah. You know, it's like the Canyon Lakes. The Canyon Lakes. The flood control.
• 21:52
  Speaker D: Yeah. Travis,
• 21:53
Speaker C: it's not supposed to be full.
• 21:55
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 21:56
Speaker C: And, you know, and you see pick you before you can rains down, the people came. Look at this lake. There's no water in this lake. There's out drying out. And like, that's actually what that lake's supposed to look like on a dry year, because it's for flood control. It's so Austin doesn't flood, you know, and it filled back up. Oh, it's great. It's filled. Filled up. Now we got to keep it like this. No, it's supposed to go out, you know, and so there's, you know, every reservoir's got a different purpose for it. And, you know, not all of them are built so you can ski and fish. You know, Ohi was not built to ski and fish on. It was built for water for Midland and San Angelo, I think.
• 22:27
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 22:28
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 22:28
Speaker C: You know, and so that water go. And that may be Abilene, too. I can't remember. Could
• 22:32
  Speaker D: be. Yeah,
• 22:33
Speaker C: but I mean, that's what it's for, you know, it's not for people to build houses on. Allen Henry is the same way they're letting their. Last time I was over there, there's more houses on there. But when it started, you could not put a house or a dock on it because it was not supposed to. It's not a stable pool. It's not a stable pool like I think is what they call them, you know, it's for water use. And so if it goes down to next to nothing, you know, fishing, too bad you can't go fishing on it anymore, you know, but that's not the purpose of the lake. So I don't know. But. Well, now that we've talked about that, Todd, anything interesting going on at the extension?
• 23:07
Speaker A: Yeah, well, of course, we've always got stuff going on. Interesting. One of the things that we'd kind of backed up. So Wayne Keeling had been doing a project, this is our fifth year, I believe, where he had been looking at Planning dates from 1st of May till middle of June. The last four years, the last planning date has been equal to or better than Any of the other planning dates.
• 23:31
  Speaker B: I wonder
• 23:31
  Speaker A: if we
• 23:32
Speaker B: did a program on that.
• 23:33
Speaker A: Totally turned that upside down. It
• 23:36
  Speaker D: did.
• 23:36
  Speaker B: Really.
• 23:38
Speaker A: So our May through into our first of June, we're all in a thousand to thirteen hundred pounds.
• 23:48
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 23:48
Speaker A: Which also shows you what seven inches of rain that we have at that cares during the middle of the season. Yeah. Changes your irrigation.
• 23:55
  Speaker D: Right.
• 23:56
Speaker A: I mean it's proof that we are supplementing rainfall with irrigation. I mean that was one day to thought that the minute he put that in front of me, I was like, well that shows that.
• 24:05
  Speaker D: Yeah. Right.
• 24:06
Speaker A: That we're supplemental irrigation. We're not full irrigation. But then the June 300 pounds was the highest.
• 24:15
  Speaker C: Wow.
• 24:16
Speaker A: That's what that 30 days did to us.
• 24:19
  Speaker C: Wow.
• 24:20
Speaker D: But, but, but the previous four years was the opposite.
• 24:23
Speaker A: Was either better or equal.
• 24:24
  Speaker D: Equal. Better.
• 24:25
Speaker A: At least equal in one year. It was like way better.
• 24:28
Speaker D: So. So I think something. The reason that that to me that that is research like that is important is because they used to like if you, if you bought all this high dollar seed, they would like replace the seed and you could replant it. So now they quit doing that.
• 24:43
  Speaker A: Yes.
• 24:43
Speaker D: So like you know, we always used to said if you don't, if you don't plant in April in West Texas, how are you going to end up replanting three times? If you don't, you know, like you got to plant early to replant three times. Well, now that this seed is like people are just moving. They're not starting to the last week of May. You could see it like our planting dates need to be adjusted for when you see stuff like that.
• 25:04
Speaker A: Well, if you look at the cost of the seed, cost of the equipment and the cost of the labor. Yeah. Guys are not wanting to replant anymore. No. I mean it's like I want to plant this once and I either want to fail it out. Yeah. Fortunately. Or I'll make a crop.
• 25:20
Speaker D: And they've got huge planters so they can plant thousands and thousands of acres a week.
• 25:25
Speaker B: We have a project that came out of NASA Acres tour and it is on this exact same thing. So I think I sent you the
• 25:34
Speaker A: kind of the project brief.
• 25:35
Speaker B: That's okay. So what we, what we want to do is look at, we. We want to look at this data and see and so they've done this. The researcher that's helping us do this, he changed the planting dates for corn through this research in Kansas. And so he knows how to. What we need to gather and how we need to go about handling it with RMA and all that kind of stuff. And so the more places we have locations we have, the less time it will take. So say we have 50 plus farmers or locations participating, then we might could do it in a year. Because they can go back historically and look, because that's one of the things we talked about that Cliff brought it up, was like, can you NASA, can you create for me on the app a way for me to go back and look and I can gauge so you can tell me like, at what percentage is my risk of freeze at every day historically. You know what I mean? And based on the current weather conditions and based on, you know, my history and that kind of stuff. And so that. And we'd like to include spacing differences too, to see if we can't see if we can start getting some of those different production models. Insurable.
• 26:54
  Speaker A: Right.
• 26:56
Speaker B: But we need people to participate.
• 26:58
Speaker A: Yes, yes. I mean, that's obviously the biggest key, but yeah, it's just. And so interestingly, also looking at that data, because I think a lot of us think of this year like 24.
• 27:09
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 27:10
Speaker A: In 24, our highest yield was about £800 across all of those planting dates. And they were the same. Basically. It didn't matter whether you planted May 1 or June 20. They were all in that 750 to 800. My theory, and this is totally a theory.
• 27:26
Speaker D: Yeah. Well, hey, you're a doctor, you gotta throw the theories out,
• 27:29
Speaker A: is because of that rainfall we got, that plant was almost like we had babied it. And then when we cut the water off and threw the heat to it, I mean, which we were still irrigating it, but we just didn't have enough water. It was like the bottom just fell out of it.
• 27:47
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 27:47
Speaker A: And it crashed on us, which, you know, and to me, that always reminded me, I used, you know, you talk about, like, if a pivot went down. Yeah. With a guy with a lot of water, it was like, that's the worst thing.
• 27:57
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 27:57
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 27:57
Speaker A: Because it'll just. Because he's been babying it all season and it'll just crash.
• 28:01
Speaker C: I wonder too if some of
• 28:02
  Speaker A: that early planning,
• 28:03
Speaker C: that early plane that got that good rain, it got to it through deeper roots as it chased water down. And so you got a little bit more stability from that.
• 28:12
Speaker D: There was a guy when I started farming, and you'll know who it is, his name was GW Deal is Tony Deal's dad. Tony's. Neither one of them are with us anymore. And I farmed all around him. And I. Man, I turned my Water on. And I'd be pixing and throwing all this stuff to it. Well, he never would turn his water on until July 1st. Like if he got it. Once he got it up, he just let it sit there. And I guarantee you there wasn't one modules worth the difference on his circle in mine where I watered the whole year. And so I started thinking, rethinking about how like a shallow root system where it never has to go for it, it never has to go down hard. Well, GW would. His plant had to go early and survive. Well, he didn't end up putting as much picks on it because the plant was shorter. But that was before even that was back in the HS 26 days. Like there is so many. The, the varietal and the breeding and stuff that you guys have done in cotton is just like gone to another level.
• 29:06
Speaker A: Oh, it's crazy. I mean from when I started at Vernon, which HS 26 and HS 200.
• 29:13
Speaker D: Oh, yeah. One you planned the first time and one you planted when you got held out
• 29:20
Speaker A: again. You went to PM145.
• 29:24
  Speaker D: Yeah, that's right.
• 29:26
Speaker A: Or if you had a neighbor that was wild with 2,4D because the hairy leaf.
• 29:29
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 29:31
Speaker A: They keep it off the leaf. But I will say I miss those days when somebody. Somebody would call and I only had three or four.
• 29:42
Speaker D: Yeah. Well, here's the three best things you can do, you know. And I have a good friend in Brownfield that owns. I guess it's still Brownfield C and D. Lenny. And we talk a lot. We talk a lot. Because he does. He is one of the only people probably in the United States that's keeping conventional cotton still alive. And I was like, what do you. What are you planting? And it's like. It's like there's a. There was a. Was Delta Pine 2379 or 20. It's the name of a county road out here right on the level County Hockley line. It was like that one and then like. And it was a Fiber Max like 9 something or what. Anyway, there's just like a few varieties that they've kept but that. That are. That are clean, that are still conventional varieties. And they have. They're doing very well because of the price of stuff.
• 30:31
Speaker A: Yeah, no, and that's a project we're going to start next year is we're actually going to do a comparison to one of the conventionals from Brownfield. And kind of the way we're looking at it, a lower seed technology, kind of a medium seed and then the full you know, full package. Yeah. Highest price. Yeah. Yield type. And then look at them under different management scenarios on dry land and limited water.
• 30:57
  Speaker D: Right.
• 30:57
Speaker A: Because I think, you know, if you got plenty of water, you should probably.
• 31:00
Speaker D: Sure. Go for it. Yeah, yeah.
• 31:01
Speaker A: But, but these dry land and the limited irrigated. You know, I go back to when I started a dry land budget was somewhere around 100 bucks.
• 31:14
Speaker D: Insurance costs like 40 now.
• 31:16
Speaker A: Yeah. And. And that's how we made dry land cotton work. Yeah. We were the lowest cost producer. Yeah. You know, across the US And I'm not saying we can get back to a hundred dollars, but anything I think we can shave off of that. Yeah. Potential to make dry land.
• 31:31
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 31:32
  Speaker A: Workforce again. Are
• 31:33
Speaker B: you familiar with the Volo? Have you heard of that?
• 31:35
Speaker A: Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
• 31:37
Speaker D: I'm not. You're gonna have to fill me in. Is that something you spray on the plant? That's like clay. That keeps it from using water or whatever? I don't know. I mean, I see all this stuff. Oh, okay.
• 31:46
Speaker B: But they're using machine learning. So they've got, you know, all of the, all of the, all of the different varieties and everything. And then they put in like the geography and all of the details and all the data and then come up with like, here's the variety that you need, here's how you need to breed for this area. So they're year four and I was talking to them the other day and they're about like, have done it to this point about what you would traditionally do in 10 years. Are
• 32:11
Speaker D: they growing it out in like Central America or something too,
• 32:14
  Speaker B: where they're getting
• 32:15
Speaker D: two crops a year or whatever.
• 32:16
Speaker B: But they're gonna look for 300,000 acres here this next year. But it's specifically for dry land. I mean, it is a low water use. So they don't have their data in yet from this year, but
• 32:27
Speaker A: no. And then, and then the other deal is that they're obviously trying to market that as sustainable to some of these, you know.
• 32:33
  Speaker B: Yes.
• 32:34
Speaker A: Closing manufacturers and stuff like
• 32:37
  Speaker D: that.
• 32:37
  Speaker A: Yeah,
• 32:37
Speaker B: yeah. So a lot of times they'll start with a meal, who has an end product that they need, and then they start breeding to meet that end market need quality or whatever it is. But also in a way breeding in a way that it can be grown here.
• 32:54
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 32:54
  Speaker B: You know,
• 32:55
Speaker C: well, that's, I mean, you look at that, you look at how far herbicide technologies come. Come along to where, you know, you're using a different, you know, newer classifications of herbicides where they. And particularly some of the pre plant stuff is, is very impressive and using stuff that is post emergent stuff as a, as a lay bys and stuff like that, you know, that's changed a whole lot. So you can keep it cleaner because I mean quite frankly I'm not sure you can find the crews to hoe it if you need to. And you can't really afford to. I mean if you're going to dryland cot cotton and you put a hoe crew out there, your profit margin is gone. I mean it's just zip, zero, nada, you know. And then of course you've got, you know, maristail a lot of the pigweed stuff that's already resistant to roundup. So you have to have different ways to control that stuff and that probably needs to be done pre emergent, you know, so. And you know, fortunately things don't get resistant to steel, but that's expensive at $5 a gallon. I was watching it and doom scrolling on Instagram this morning while I was getting ready to come over here and I was watching a guy in Illinois and he said, you ever just plow because you're, because you're mad? And he was like they'd had a field of soybeans they harvested early and got all the rain on it. He said every bean that went out the back end of my combine sprouted twice. He said I just got tired looking at it. So he had this big, you know, John Deere, oh massive track. They had these speed
• 34:14
Speaker D: discs now that you can run 15 miles an hour across.
• 34:17
Speaker C: I just went implied it. I'm not going. He's like, he's like I just did it, did it because I was mad at it. I'm like man, that's an expensive mad. I mean because you know that tractor probably ran. It probably goes through 200 gallons a day. A thousand dollars of fuel for a day and it probably cost the guy 500 bucks just in fuel cost to go across that thing. And you know, like man, I'm like, I've never been that mad at anything I don't think. But it's you know, the, the advent of you know, and just some, just one. I know Sinister is the one is one that I'm thinking of and you know how they're using dual now in different applications and even flumey. Valor. Valor. Valor. You know, Valor was the first time I ever saw it was as a peanut herbicide. And now you can, you know, you can use it lay by post direct lay by in, in cotton. And yeah,
• 35:04
Speaker D: I'm, I'M all for figuring out how to get this chemical out early and not be spraying stuff late. I mean, the, because of. Because we need to develop, you know, alternate crops. And this. With the chemicals they have now, it's real hard to keep them where you put it. Yeah. Now I think the, the see and spray technology.
• 35:22
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 35:22
Speaker D: Is it is going to be. I'm not. I don't know the numbers on that as far as, like, what percentage amount of chemical that it puts out. Less. You know, we have a recirculating spray in our vineyard. And as the, as the, as the. When we're spraying fungicide. Well, obviously, as when the grapes first come out, you get. You go 25 or 30%.
• 35:43
  Speaker C: It's further. It's right at 25%. Yeah.
• 35:47
Speaker D: And so, you know, and then. And then as the crop gets bigger, there's less that's recirculated because it's more going on the plant. But that. I know that, you know, John Deere is really good at pricing the technology just a little bit around, like what it would be if you did it. That
• 36:00
Speaker A: was exactly what I was going to say because. And that's where a lot of. Well, a lot of guys have hesitancy because the equipment costs more to begin with. And then they put a per acre. Per
• 36:11
  Speaker D: acre
• 36:12
Speaker A: charge. Yeah. That's where a lot of guys, I think, are just kind of. I'm not doing it because it's almost like the technology. Right. When those first came out, you know, there were guys still growing conventional. Oh, yeah. You know.
• 36:24
Speaker C: Well, you know, it's
• 36:25
Speaker A: kind of one of those. It'll be a cold day before I do.
• 36:28
  Speaker D: Right.
• 36:28
Speaker A: And then all of
• 36:28
  Speaker D: a
• 36:28
Speaker A: sudden it got awful cold.
• 36:30
Speaker D: I wonder who. Who owns the patent on that. To me, it'd be like, I mean, I wonder if John Deere owns the patent on that. Because you would think that there could be an aftermarket company that could come in. You just like gps. Right. Like everybody. John Deere was all. Everything with John Deere or Trimble at the time, and Trimble was an aviation company, and so they had the ability to do it. But like, you know, everything has gone. Everything is it. When it comes in, it seems to go. The, you know, the price of it seems to go down once technology catches up to it. There's some things recently that. That hasn't happened with.
• 37:04
Speaker A: No. And that's one of the conversations we've had about budgets is if you really look. Yeah. Seed costs have went up, but we've put a whole lot more in them. You know, it's not like seed costs just went up.
• 37:15
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 37:16
Speaker A: There, there's, you know, even. Even from the first gmo, there's three times as much stuff in there now as there was. Yeah.
• 37:23
Speaker D: Because they never take a chemical that they bred in it out. Yeah. Like you. Yet now you're up to like at least three, Right?
• 37:29
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 37:29
Speaker D: I mean, you're up to at least three chemicals. Even if the, Even if the chemical is the weeds you're trying to kill or resist it to one of the chemicals in that seed, they're not going to take it out of the seat. They just leave it in there.
• 37:39
Speaker A: Right, right. And so, so, so, so we've gotten some benefit chemicals of that cost has actually went down.
• 37:46
  Speaker D: Yes. Yeah. I
• 37:47
Speaker A: mean, if you look at the price of just about everything. Well, one, it's almost all generic.
• 37:52
Speaker D: Right. Patents are running out and.
• 37:55
  Speaker A: But equipment prices
• 37:56
  Speaker D: have skyrocketed.
• 37:57
  Speaker A: Have skyrocketed.
• 37:58
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 37:58
Speaker B: So I think that that CN spray like installed is like 600, 000. Yeah.
• 38:03
Speaker D: I'm going to think that the sprayer with the CN spray is like a million bucks.
• 38:06
Speaker B: I can believe that. Yeah. Because I think just installed, I
• 38:08
Speaker D: mean, that's a million bucks. Around bell strippers. A million bucks. I mean, like, it's all like. And yeah. So you got to farm half the county to make it like work out.
• 38:17
Speaker C: I think the thing that bugs me about, see, it's the seed cost is annoying. I mean, just because. I mean, just because it's a simple line item and it's big. But what bugs what, you know, and I've thought it for a long time and I didn't know for sure if it occurred until this last year when the corn board actually surveyed and said, hey, what's it costing in Brazil to get the same thing?
• 38:39
  Speaker B: Exactly.
• 38:39
Speaker C: And it's way cheaper in Brazil. And so, you know,
• 38:43
Speaker D: where'd they get that seed from?
• 38:45
Speaker C: Well, it's the same company.
• 38:46
Speaker D: I know it is.
• 38:49
Speaker A: The equipment's cheaper too.
• 38:50
  Speaker D: Yeah,
• 38:51
  Speaker B: everything's cheaper. Yeah.
• 38:52
Speaker A: I heard a story. That a. A company that farms, I believe it was in Arizona, California, somewhere out west. Basically shipped in their equipment from Brazil because it was cheaper, even with the shipping costs
• 39:14
Speaker D: and the tariffs from my everything or whatever. Same
• 39:18
  Speaker A: stuff.
• 39:20
Speaker D: So that. So basically.
• 39:22
  Speaker A: So
• 39:22
Speaker D: John, do you like, made it into Moyne, shipped it down to Buenos Aires or wherever. If it's. If you know, and then you go get it and you bring it back and it's still cheaper
• 39:32
Speaker A: now. I haven't done my own.
• 39:34
  Speaker D: Right. Yeah. Right.
• 39:36
Speaker C: My, my conspiracy addled brain has always thought that the most valued members of John Deere, of the John Deere company is not the engineers, it's the, the accountants.
• 39:47
  Speaker B: Well, they
• 39:47
  Speaker C: don't think like
• 39:48
Speaker B: in Brazil it's the government that's negotiating those costs.
• 39:53
  Speaker C: I've heard that. I don't know if it's true.
• 39:54
Speaker B: I don't, I don't know. But I know like in Europe where, you know, the EU is paying for half of
• 40:03
  Speaker D: equipment
• 40:04
Speaker B: cost, half of everything basically. Yeah. I mean there's,
• 40:08
Speaker D: they don't subsidize their crops, but they, they subsidize the inputs and stuff. But like we get just like money for like.
• 40:14
  Speaker B: Yes.
• 40:15
Speaker D: What do they, what do they just release a deal where people can get money to help
• 40:18
  Speaker B: against diesel?
• 40:19
  Speaker A: Yes,
• 40:19
Speaker B: yes. There's like eight, another eight million or something. Yeah. There was
• 40:22
Speaker D: a guy telling me the other day like we need a farm bill. I'm like, why? Like just keep with what this ad hoc stuff is. You guys have made more money.
• 40:32
Speaker C: Nobody keeping track of how much money is being spent because there's not a farm bill to balance it against and say, okay, we got this and this. There's nobody keeping track of the money that coming out. And it's not just, I mean it's not just agriculture, it's everywhere. That's as evidenced BY we're what, $41 trillion in debt now. We, we started this radio show at $38 trillion of debt. You know, what was it that
• 40:54
Speaker D: I stopped you mid, you were going to talk about something I stopped. Oh,
• 41:01
Speaker C: I think you were talking about
• 41:03
  Speaker D: seed in Brazil.
• 41:05
Speaker C: Brazil. We were talking about. Oh,
• 41:06
Speaker B: that's what I was just wondering is. I think, I mean, I'm thinking, I mean, because there's not like a whole lot of small farmers.
• 41:13
  Speaker C: No,
• 41:14
  Speaker D: no, no,
• 41:15
  Speaker C: no.
• 41:15
Speaker B: So I'm thinking it's like powerful. You know, there's a, there's an organization that is just like this national organization that tries to participate in, I don't know how to say this without saying giving away who they are. But anyway, they try to, they try to influence how things are farmed. Farmed.
• 41:37
  Speaker C: Okay,
• 41:37
Speaker B: okay. And they have a great dislike for U. S. Farming and I am convinced that is because they can bully a little two acre
• 41:49
  Speaker D: or bribe
• 41:50
  Speaker B: farmer or bribe.
• 41:51
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 41:52
Speaker B: You know, and how you, I mean even, it's like here we'll pay for you to actually have enough food to live on. You know what I mean? And you know, to kind of get what they want. Yeah, there's, you Know, instead of having to have to deal with people that have some power.
• 42:07
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 42:07
Speaker B: And I feel like that's the way we are. I mean, we don't have the kind of power that these, however many there are in Brazil. Farmer, farmers.
• 42:16
Speaker C: You know what they, what the farm bill did back in 91 2, when did the Freedom to Go Broke act passed?
• 42:25
Speaker D: Well, no, Grassley's been there for
• 42:27
  Speaker A: 100
• 42:27
  Speaker D: years.
• 42:30
  Speaker C: Yes, that something.
• 42:31
Speaker D: Yeah, it was 96 because it was so bad in 2002 it got changed. That's when it got bought out and all that. It changed.
• 42:38
Speaker C: Yes, that's when I would think. So when in 96 when it passed, I heard a guy comment and it's. I don't know how it has stuck with me for 30 years, but he said all this farm bill does is make it to where instead of competing with the US Government, competing against Brazil and competing against China, every individual farmer is now competing against the country. The government of Brazil and the government of China and the government of India. He said that's all that this program did. Now it was, you know, Combust, I think was in, was our rep at the time. And you know, he was all for it and everything like that. But I mean, when you go and you put an individual against a government, it's not going to turn out well for the individual. I mean, and that was the, that you, you basically put us in. But the theory behind it was that everybody could grow everything because at that point in time you were literally limited on what crops you can grow, which quite frankly in West Texas, it doesn't really matter. We're limited by what we can grow up. Limited on what we can grow. We don't have. We're not like the Central Valley of California that you can just grow about anything out there. You know, they have, they don't have much in the way of weather. Freezes are not in not deal when they get a hail. It's a, you know, historic event where we get a hell, it's Tuesday, you know, and so, you know, so that the flexibility to grow everything was less impactful out here than in a lot of other regions in the state in the country. But that being said, Iowa, the I states are soybeans and corn, you know, and all that been the huge chunk of that is ethanol that the driver for that. But I don't know, I would, I would love, personally would love to see a farm bill just to update some of the other programs that are out there. Like the, in particular the CRP program. It has not been updated since 18. The paper in the current farm bill that is, you know, gathering dust in Congress right now is an update on prices for that. Because quite frankly, I don't. I mean, not just from a bird perspective, which I'm a bird, you know, but from a crop production standpoint. I mean, we're already. But we already bump against the surplus every time we turn around, you know, and if we don't. If we're not having a surplus, we don't see it because, well, Argentina had a big crop that was always the big deal in peanuts. Well, the price of peanuts isn't going to be this good this year, even though you didn't have a good crop last year. But Argentina had a big crop. Argentina always. I don't know how it is, but according to Cargill and people that are buying stuff, Argentina, Brazil always has a big crop. How are they doing it?
• 45:12
Speaker A: Kind of like Iowa corn crop.
• 45:14
  Speaker D: Exactly. Yeah. And
• 45:15
Speaker C: if you're. And if you don't. Those
• 45:16
Speaker D: guys hate that pro farmer tour, don't they?
• 45:18
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 45:19
Speaker D: Where they go around and do all the yields, and let's estimate, then the price falls after because, like, oh, you're gonna make 200 average is 251st
• 45:27
Speaker B: when the government comes out with the price report.
• 45:29
Speaker C: Yeah, the pro farmer did. I watched a bunch of stuff on it, and they were saying, I think they're high on this. And all of a sudden, three weeks later, the USDA finds 300 million bushels. Yeah. Like, how do you find 300 million bushels?
• 45:40
  Speaker A: Anymore?
• 45:40
  Speaker C: Anymore? Yeah. Anymore.
• 45:42
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 45:42
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 45:44
Speaker B: I don't know. I was a meeting with one of the NAS guys that does those surveys and stuff, and he. He was like, help us. Like, help us figure it out.
• 45:53
Speaker D: But I don't think anybody that I know that gets those ever tells the truth. Well,
• 45:58
  Speaker B: okay.
• 45:58
  Speaker D: Because.
• 45:58
Speaker B: Yeah, that is exactly what I said. I was like. And. And, you know, one year, the. The hemp, they. They put out a hemp report. Do you remember this? The first year they. They do these hemp market reports now. And I. For some reason, I was up there talking to Naz, and I was like, you know what happens when you. When you survey bull? People that are spitting bull. Guess what you get.
• 46:22
  Speaker A: Yes.
• 46:23
Speaker B: You know, And. And so. And then when this guy was like, I just don't know why. And I was like, well, I mean, like, a lot of people, I know it's always been a joke that they don't fill them out correctly.
• 46:33
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 46:34
Speaker B: Because they don't want y' all to know
• 46:35
Speaker D: well, yeah. What other business, like, tells the people that set the price all about what's going on for free and they use it against them to lower the price. That's, that's what it's become is like. That's why they don't like the pro farmer thing. That's why. Because they can use that to depress the price.
• 46:52
Speaker B: Well, and guess what? China already has satellites to know exactly what everybody in the world has.
• 46:56
Speaker D: Well, I thought they were using those balloons
• 46:58
  Speaker B: that
• 46:58
  Speaker D: got shot down,
• 46:59
  Speaker C: so.
• 46:59
Speaker B: They don't need to use the balloons. They've got satellites.
• 47:02
Speaker D: Well, they had a balloon. Somebody had a balloon.
• 47:04
Speaker B: I think it was me.
• 47:08
Speaker C: I had a really good point.
• 47:09
  Speaker B: Oh, man.
• 47:10
Speaker C: Everybody that you know, mark it down. 12, 49 and 54 seconds. Okay,
• 47:14
  Speaker B: well, Dusty had
• 47:15
  Speaker C: a good thought.
• 47:15
Speaker B: While you're, while you're trying to remember your thought, I want to talk about two, two different local businesses that I came across this week, and I said I'm going to talk about them on the radio. So one is All American Eatery. Have y' all been out there? It's like
• 47:26
Speaker C: I wanted to go,
• 47:28
  Speaker B: oh, my goodness,
• 47:30
  Speaker D: I
• 47:30
  Speaker B: don't know.
• 47:31
Speaker D: And it's closed now.
• 47:32
Speaker B: Well, this one is on 80. If you go to 80 seconds, it dead ends. Well, you have to go back. It's like 8, 900 on the highway. It's on the other side on the east side of,
• 47:44
  Speaker D: of the inner
• 47:46
  Speaker B: interstate,
• 47:46
Speaker D: where it ends. Yeah, they put one in Wolfworth and it did, it stayed open like a month, and then it clo. But I, I, I go eat every once in a while at the one that they have. It's very, very good.
• 47:55
Speaker B: Oh, my goodness. It's good. And also. Oh, my goodness. Yeah, and also next door to it, they have a bakery. And in the bakery, they literally have a room with a television and a whole area for kids to play. It's like not gymnastics stuff. It's like knives, crayons, puzzles, toys, TVs. I mean, it's, it's really nice. Yeah, it's so nice. And the food is great and the service is great. I'm like, we need to talk about this. People need to go eat at the All American Eagle.
• 48:26
Speaker D: You don't listen to sports radio very much because they, they
• 48:29
  Speaker B: advertise on that.
• 48:30
Speaker D: They advertise it a lot. They advertise. I've
• 48:32
Speaker B: never, I mean, especially on
• 48:33
Speaker D: that. For show. They. He's a sponsor. They. So they advertise it a lot. It's, it's, it's really good. I mean, it's up there with cast iron grill. I mean, it's. Yeah, it's good stuff.
• 48:41
Speaker B: It is. And I
• 48:42
  Speaker A: check that out.
• 48:43
Speaker B: Yeah. So. And then I. So I think that the guy that. That owns it used to own the place at Buffalo Springs Lake. So that's what my brother tell her. Our brother told us or be this week. So I don't know if that's true or not, but there was some kind of cafe or something out there at Buffalo Springs. I don't know. But the other one is I took dad this week to have his pacemaker checked out. And that doctor, Dr. Silvera is his name, and I think it's called the Rhythm Place. Now, I have to look it up before we go, but that's a good doctor. And I suggest that if you're having heart problems and you need something with a pacemaker, you should go check him out.
• 49:27
Speaker D: Was it at the. What was it at the heart hospital? No,
• 49:29
  Speaker B: it is not
• 49:29
Speaker D: umc. He is Tech positions. Umc. None
• 49:33
  Speaker B: of the above.
• 49:34
  Speaker A: Oh, wow.
• 49:35
Speaker B: None of the above. Which I don't know if y' all been keeping up with.
• 49:38
Speaker D: Yeah, the OBGYN thing.
• 49:40
Speaker B: Yeah. So I think it's a similar. He didn't come around and say that to me, but it feels like the same kind of situation.
• 49:47
  Speaker C: Man. That's a.
• 49:49
  Speaker B: Yeah.
• 49:49
Speaker D: He has to be part of. They got to have someplace to do surgeries, and so that's why they want. That was the whole deal with the women. Right. Is that they couldn't have a place to do births if they weren't associated with either Providence or UMC or will take positions Texas
• 50:04
  Speaker B: Tech.
• 50:04
Speaker D: I can keep up with it. I know my wife's lived.
• 50:07
Speaker B: I have my own opinions. And it's not just. I mean, we encountered this whole. Why don't we have the kind of physicians that we need here? When dad. Our dad was diagnosed with heart failure, and there's not a heart failure doctor in Lubbock. One guy who was here at one time left and now works for Baylor, Scott and White. Shout out to Baylor, Scott and White and he left. Comes back once a month. Baylor, Scott and Watt does have a clinic here, and they send specialists. So there's a specialist. Different specialists in there, I think, every week, you know, but it's. I don't know. I. I was visiting with somebody the other day that's from out of. They're not from here, but they've been in the medical world across. Across the medical industry, across the world, everywhere. And they're like, y' all are in the 80s. You're, you're literally in the 80s. This is what Medicare looks like. Look like in the 80s in other places.
• 51:06
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 51:06
Speaker B: And I don't know how you move that forward.
• 51:10
Speaker C: You know, this, this, I actually remembered my thought and this actually kind of plays into it. Oddly enough, when you look at the amount of venture capital that's gone into, into medical, not just medical, veterinary clinics, you know, just name go down the list of it and the amount of venture capitalists going in and buying up all the, you know, the individuals and stuff like that. How bad it gets when they do that because they go in and it's just kind of like, you know, it's, you know, the bad example is Toys R Us. You know, Toys R Us was a, was a money making going concern until they sold the venture capital and then venture capital bought it and borrowed money against that to pay for it and pulled all that money out of it and then made them try to stand on their own two feet and they couldn't do it. So then they went bankrupt and venture capitalists walk off with all this money.
• 51:57
Speaker B: So interesting that you're even bringing that up because this has a lot to do with farming and what's happening out at AgriLife. Just kidding. Has nothing to do with it. God's nodding his head like, yes, yes.
• 52:09
Speaker C: In case you're, in case you're
• 52:11
  Speaker A: watching,
• 52:13
Speaker D: you've been waiting a long time,
• 52:17
Speaker C: but it does. One of the things that, that did happen in the commodities market is when they opened it up, because it used to be to participate in the futures market in commodities, you had to be a participant in the industry. And when they open it up because obviously they saw a way they could make money. Now you have got people that have no skin in the game at all throwing money at the commodities market. To my way of thinking, and I may be completely wrong, I'm not an economist and I don't play one on tv, but when I look at it, I'm like, if you got somebody that's just basically gambling on the side over here, then it can skew the market one way or the other. And so you get wind up with wider swings. Because it says, okay, you know, the report comes out that there's, you know, you know, 300 million new bushels of corn out there. Well, somebody's putting money on that thing and they're swapping, you know, they're pulling a bunch of money off. And with commodities, it's a zero sum game. It's not like it's not like a lot of things that are, that are not zero sum game. When I say zero sum game, it means when somebody makes money, somebody loses money. And so, you know, you just basically open it up. It's like having what's the cow she or whatever it is that the gambling site that you can gamble on anything. Well, that's just, I mean, that's what the commodities market has been for decades.
• 53:38
Speaker A: Oh, it's still, I still remember as a, as a young agronomist sitting across the desk from Stan Beavers, who was our extension economist at Vernon, and him explaining to me that that's all paper. And it took like, I think an hour for him to get that through my thick skull that there's not a commodity and there's not an actual sale, that this is just paper that guys are playing with guys. And I kept going, what?
• 54:13
  Speaker D: Yeah,
• 54:13
Speaker C: but when it goes back to, you know, if it went back to, you know, it would be interesting to see somebody study that or somebody that actually knew how that worked, that stuff worked. If, and I'm not saying that you wouldn't see swings in the market. I just wonder if they would be as big a swings because, you know, when I was in, in college taking ag economics and we started learning the futures market stuff, at that point commodity prices were below production. So if you, if a farmer went and participated in the futures market to do that, all they were doing was locking in, okay, I'm not going to lose more than this, you know, and not knowing, hey, I'm not going to lose more than this doesn't really help anybody at all, you know, But I mean it, when you go in there and you're like, okay, you know, something happens and it pushed, it's pushed way down because you have a lot of artificial money, you know, people that aren't actually in the industry competing again, you know, competing against say a corn producer and drives that price even further down because, you know, they've got something that can make money if it goes lower. And so they're throwing money to that to make lower, you know, or not even saying money to do that. It's, you know, you got just the vault, sheer volume of money that can go in, can push it lower. And in my, again, my way, that's just the way I understand it. I may not understand it correctly, but
• 55:29
Speaker B: I've seen a lot of like, in fact, Jeremy Brown's coming on next week and he's one of the guys I think about, you know, looking for those alternative markets, places where you can sell without having to get into, you know, selling futures or you, you know, it, it feels riskier, you know, because you may have people walk off on. I think that's what people always remember is like I did this and somebody walked away. And so it's, it's safer for me to do this. You know what I mean? But it's hard to, you know, without taking some risk. It's hard to. I know because I know that there's a group that's trying to. I can't remember the name of them here. I'll think of it in a minute. But it's. They're trying to contract some organic grain, you know, and so you just, you want to. I mean, people are looking for things to do now, you know.
• 56:23
Speaker C: Well, I talked to a guy and I. And it came up because we were talking about COVID crops in the vineyard and I had place I took out and I'm trying to build organic matter up. So I planted pearl millet on it, you know, pretty, pretty drought tolerant, you know, build lots of organic matter, you know. I was talking about it. He said, yeah, he said, I grew permulet one time and he was an organic farmer in Terry County. He's like for birdseed. They had a company come in and I remember the meeting, I remember being at the meeting. They're like by the bird seed and said, but you got to harvest the whole head. Because they had been. It was a company that had built a feeder that attached inside the bird cage and it. And it held a complete head of pearl millet and the bird would pick it out. And I said, how'd that go? And he said I lost my hind parts on that thing. And I said, why did you do that? How did that happen? He said, well, I harvested it all, put it in enclosed semi, in a box in a semi, drove off. And I called him a couple weeks later, said, hey, where's my check? And said, oh, we had to throw that out. It got wet. And he said they just stole the semi load of crop.
• 57:21
Speaker B: Yes, that's the problem.
• 57:22
Speaker C: And I mean, that's what you want. That's the only time anybody comes in is the same thing, you know, with the, you know, the pickles were a little bit better in Terry county, but you know, they started early and early. It was amazing how many pickles they needed. Well, if you planted, if you planted after I think the third week of planning because they, they really were controlling on when you planted it. They planted them in stages. Well, as you got down there all Of a sudden, oversized was a lot smaller than what it was at the first of it. And so that. So that as you got. So you knew. So, like, after one year, everybody knew, if I'm on the tail end of planting, I'm not gonna. I'm gonna make a third of my crop. And that's gonna be, you know, two thirds of it's gonna be dumped out or it's just gonna be. They're just gonna say they reject it. You know, it's same thing with. My father owned a watermelon. She had ship a load of watermelons to New York City, gets rejected at the loading dock by the deal. And then, like, what do we do with them? And it's. They some team somewhere got a load of watermelon.
• 58:16
Speaker D: Isn't there a board now where you can go fight that? Like, you can turn. You can turn them into like, some kind of state arbitration dealer?
• 58:23
Speaker C: I don't know. I know there is, and I know there's some stuff you can do in the grape. Grape industry, but I don't know if there is. I
• 58:28
Speaker D: think it's for all fresh, like, fresh, you know, vegetables like that, that. That are perishable.
• 58:36
  Speaker C: Yeah,
• 58:36
  Speaker D: I think.
• 58:37
Speaker B: I think you can, like. I know, like in the white industry, can't you, like, pull their. They can get their license. Yeah, yeah,
• 58:42
Speaker D: they can get there. They can get. They can get their license. Yeah. Until
• 58:47
  Speaker B: you
• 58:48
Speaker A: pay the farmer. Talking about, you know, they show up, they disappear.
• 58:53
  Speaker D: Oh, yeah.
• 58:54
Speaker A: I remember the hemp. I remember the hemp deal because I was in Oklahoma, you know, I was getting phone calls from, you know, dealers and retailers and stuff.
• 59:03
  Speaker D: Literal dealers.
• 59:07
Speaker B: My favorite was, I've been farming. No, we have people here. Like, we're going to come and teach a class. Because I've been farming hemp for 40 years, and I'm like, I think you've been farming hemp for 40 years.
• 59:21
  Speaker A: Yes.
• 59:21
  Speaker B: Yeah.
• 59:22
Speaker A: But. But, you know, because I was getting phone calls, like, I'm hearing there's going to be 250,000 acres of hemp in Oklahoma next year. And I'm like, what? And so I go to calling people and they go, yeah, they're having a big meeting at Frederick, you know, next week. And the guy would come and show up. And. And then by. And that was like, say, in March.
• 59:40
  Speaker D: Yes.
• 59:40
Speaker A: And by May, you couldn't. That guy didn't answer. Yeah, he was gone. Yeah, I
• 59:45
Speaker B: know. Like, a guy here that, like. So I hosted a meeting here, and it was like a preventative meeting. And so, like, Had Senator Perry there and, and like we had like few hand picked farmers and anyway, but I was like, no, we are not just gonna, like, we're gonna pick people to come that will leave here and go tell their neighbors to be careful, you know. And so some of the folks that showed up there, they held a meeting like two weeks later at Cook's Garage. And the guy that, I mean, he just, he, he literally. They stole money, they stole like equipment, they stole. One guy was living in someone's RV and he took their rv. You know, I mean, just.
• 1:00:35
  Speaker C: Yeah,
• 1:00:35
  Speaker B: they're just crooked.
• 1:00:36
Speaker C: That's. Yeah, I mean that's, that's always the. That seems like. It seems like it's every new crop. Yes,
• 1:00:43
Speaker B: it seems like. And it is that way, but. But it is magnified in hemp.
• 1:00:48
  Speaker D: Yeah,
• 1:00:51
Speaker C: look where they're coming from. They've been drugged
• 1:00:52
  Speaker B: for 40 years.
• 1:00:54
Speaker D: Remember the guy that came. There was a guy about five years ago that came through that wanted us to plant trees for. What's that?
• 1:01:01
Speaker B: The real fast growing trees?
• 1:01:02
Speaker D: No, it, no, it's, it was, it was trees, but it was for truffles. Yes, we grow truffles. And I'm like. So it got really. When we started talking about numbers and he didn't know numbers on it. Like, I'm like, well, how long do you have to grow the tree? Like how. And then how do you inoculate the roots to have the truffles? And like, I don't know anybody that did it, but he was, he had been all over trying to get somebody to do that for truffles.
• 1:01:28
Speaker C: Yeah, well, probably not the great, you know, something that gets a place that gets 18 inches of rain a year. Probably not the greatest place to grow trees for truffles. Just saying, just throwing it out there.
• 1:01:40
  Speaker B: Probably
• 1:01:40
  Speaker C: not
• 1:01:40
  Speaker B: dramatically
• 1:01:41
  Speaker A: on both sides.
• 1:01:43
Speaker C: You know, maybe throw it somewhere, you know. But
• 1:01:47
Speaker B: you know, something that is growing here that's done, Done well is saffron. There's a family here that's doing saffron.
• 1:01:53
Speaker C: There is, but that's
• 1:01:54
Speaker B: a lot of work. It
• 1:01:55
Speaker C: is an insane amount of work. And I mean it's, it's like. It's almost like panning for gold out of the tailings of a mine.
• 1:02:02
  Speaker B: Yeah. Because you
• 1:02:03
Speaker C: do a lot of work. I mean, it's a lot. It's a high value crop. I mean, there's no denying it's, it's, it's. I think it is. At one point in time it was the most, the highest value crop.
• 1:02:12
Speaker D: It's the highest expense Spice or whatever. Or whatever. I know it's too. It's super expensive.
• 1:02:16
Speaker C: It's insane. But you gotta go in there and pick the. Set the stamens out by hand.
• 1:02:21
  Speaker D: Yeah,
• 1:02:22
  Speaker C: man. I'm like,
• 1:02:23
Speaker B: yep. They need a little tiny vacuum.
• 1:02:27
Speaker C: Yeah, well, it's like it, it's not growing. Like we could grow blackberries out here. I could grow blackberries in the, in the vineyard.
• 1:02:33
Speaker D: We could grow hemp. We could not hemp. We could grow hops also.
• 1:02:37
Speaker C: Yeah, but. Oh, yeah,
• 1:02:39
Speaker D: yeah. Now I thought
• 1:02:40
Speaker B: they need a lot of rain.
• 1:02:41
Speaker D: No, they, I mean it depends. You
• 1:02:43
Speaker C: can get too much crown rod is a, is a big problem in there.
• 1:02:46
Speaker B: I saw those in. I was in Washington. Yeah.
• 1:02:49
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 1:02:50
  Speaker B: What is that?
• 1:02:51
Speaker D: Yeah, well, they have. So they, they in. It's all. And. And they're not sure about like how it would do, but because most of it's grown at really high latitudes. Like if you look at Bordeaux, it's like the 42nd latitude or whatever, which is even with like Washington state. So they're the same. Bordeaux is the same. So when you get back up into like in Britain and stuff, it's even further. It's like, like in Canada, even with that. But they make in Poland. In Eastern Europe, like Poland and Hungary, they grow a dwarf type that. And they have a machine that will harvest it. Because if the ones they grow up in Washington, you know, they're like 20 foot tall and they have to have a 5 to 10 million dollar plant to process it and stuff because it's, it's. They bring the whole thing in and it harvested inside that barn. Well, this thing was a. It was a machine that went over it and picked it. So you just ended up with the hops and basically you bail it in a. People are familiar with the gin. A moat press.
• 1:03:47
  Speaker C: Yeah,
• 1:03:48
Speaker D: they would just bail it in a moat press and then send. And then send it on. But the, the fall of alcohol consumption and breweries and everything else is just like. It's cratered that market most. There's half of that stuff being pulled out. But there the problem is, is we can grow just about anything.
• 1:04:06
Speaker A: The other problem I was thinking is. And we can out produce.
• 1:04:10
  Speaker B: Yeah,
• 1:04:11
Speaker D: yeah, yeah. We proved that in grapes. In five years they went from paying people to, to plant grapes to like, we have. We quit. We don't have enough. Like. Well, y' all told us five years ago that we could never grow enough is what that's. That
• 1:04:26
Speaker C: was that. I can't tell you how many meetings I heard. I heard when I was with extension. One of the first things I did when I talked to the wineries, they're like, oh, you got to get more grapes planted. I said, they're coming. I said, well, no, you've got to speed it up. It's got to be sped up. I'm like, you don't want us to start planting grapes by the section. Oh, yeah. You'll never meet. And like when we guarantee you we will. Yeah. Of all the times I wanted to not be right. I mean, I'm very seldom ever right on anything predicting like that. But I was right on that.
• 1:04:51
Speaker D: That was easy. So it was easy to see.
• 1:04:53
Speaker B: One thing I want to say so about hemp is that the biggest thing to me was the lack of equipment innovation in hemp. And I kept saying, you have to be able to decorticate it in the field. And like, it's impossible. It's impossible. But they are doing it Oregon State now. So they have new equipment and they successfully decorticated I don't know how many acres on their research farm this year with a. Because that's separating the fibers and that's like the most. Has been.
• 1:05:21
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:05:21
Speaker B: One of the major hold ups.
• 1:05:22
Speaker C: Well, hemp is an amazing plant. The different things you can do with it. It is mind numbing.
• 1:05:28
Speaker B: Let me just say that you can do a lot of those same things with things like sorghum. And like there's also sorghum. There are varieties of sorghum that actually probably in my opinion, take up more CO2. Like that was a big deal. Oh, it's going to take up all this CO2, but there's an A and M variety of sorghum that was made for that purpose and I think it probably does a better job. So. Yes. I
• 1:05:50
  Speaker C: never
• 1:05:50
  Speaker B: actually thought
• 1:05:51
Speaker C: about from that standpoint.
• 1:05:52
Speaker B: I know. But that's what I'm like because. But mostly like when people don't understand like. I mean they're making. Now they're gonna start making clothes out of corn.
• 1:06:00
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:06:00
Speaker B: They have this new. And it's gonna. I mean, you know, like what. They don't know what all these things that are soy is in. You know
• 1:06:07
Speaker A: the problem is. I mean. And we deal with this in cotton is competing fibers.
• 1:06:12
  Speaker B: Yes.
• 1:06:13
Speaker A: And a mill doesn't want to swap.
• 1:06:16
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 1:06:16
  Speaker C: Yep.
• 1:06:17
Speaker A: I mean, I think a lot of times we think, oh, we can just replace polyester. And I'm not saying we can't.
• 1:06:23
  Speaker D: Right.
• 1:06:23
Speaker A: But that's gonna have to be a cotton mill that increases that consumption, you know. Well. And it's not to say that polyester meal couldn't go to cotton, but it's kind of like I learned this in the feedlot. They want the same ration.
• 1:06:39
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:06:40
Speaker A: So they know exactly what they're dealing with. They don't have to change any strategy. The
• 1:06:46
Speaker C: recipe stays the same every
• 1:06:47
Speaker A: time. And a lot of these factories in general, it's not even mills, factories in general, they want that to stay the
• 1:06:54
Speaker C: same. Well, it's like that fiber that tech developed that you were telling us about a couple weeks ago. It's similar to the, like the dry fit stuff, that slicker, but to the oil. Yeah,
• 1:07:05
Speaker B: that was Nick. Nick Birdfield. Yeah.
• 1:07:07
Speaker C: You know that that fiber, I mean, could replace all that stuff. And it's made out of cotton.
• 1:07:13
  Speaker B: Well, but
• 1:07:13
Speaker C: it's, it's a long process to get from point A to point B. And then somebody's got to have to go from the ground up. Either buy one and convert it over or start from the ground up and build it. Well,
• 1:07:23
Speaker B: the most, to get the most amazing thing out at. At that place is their biopolymer because it, it can. It's made from cotton cellulose and it can use any cellulose, but it doesn't. It wouldn't compete with food grade. That's the big thing. But also it is so versatile that you can make like a cup that will last 30 years or you can make a liner, a weed liner that will be biodegraded at the end of the season. Like it can degrade in seven weeks.
• 1:07:52
  Speaker C: Wow.
• 1:07:52
Speaker B: It is unbelievable. But it is not a drop in place. You know, you can't just say here, start using this and not petroleum. It won't work with the engineering that makes plastics. Right?
• 1:08:05
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:08:06
Speaker A: No, because we dealt with that. I go back to Knaf. I
• 1:08:12
  Speaker B: was
• 1:08:12
Speaker A: actually in Mississippi when they started. You know, there was a co op out there, it was a group of growers and those modules were probably still sitting on the turn row out there 30 years later. But part of the problem they ran into was there was the pulp mills and it was like, we're set up to handle wood. Yes. You know, they proved they could do the same thing with it, in some cases even better. But it was like, well,
• 1:08:39
Speaker B: and you know, laugh about, you know, that because I. Last time I went through Slayton, I think they finally got rid of bales out there of him that were out there and. But you know, like, honestly that. The way that that group of farmers were growing, that was brilliant and you know, and kudos to them. For trying, you know, and for people that are willing to put in grapes, you know, and do other things, like the Binghams that, you know.
• 1:09:05
  Speaker C: Yeah,
• 1:09:06
  Speaker B: they're.
• 1:09:06
  Speaker C: I mean,
• 1:09:07
  Speaker B: they're gonna try.
• 1:09:07
Speaker C: That's the sad thing about it is that so many of the people that tried, those used to be farmers, you know, and I'd use the past tense, you know, directly.
• 1:09:18
Speaker D: Well, I think that's why we need to, like, especially with, like, agri life and stuff. It's like, well, okay, I've been farming 40 years, been there, done that. Like, day nothing. The first time a new crop comes in, other than what we did with grapes, will be the second time I've ever seen thing work. Because artichokes, pickles. I mean, you want to. Now that, you know, let's take the crops that we know that we can grow. We can grow watermelons, we can grow cantaloupe, pumpkins and cotton, Milo corn in certain areas. And let's figure out, like, what. How can we do that more profitable? And that's what agri life is kind of tasked with, is like, we're y', all. Yet. Not that you don't try different crops, but this, like, most of the research goes to making what we're already doing better.
• 1:10:11
Speaker B: But, like, let's talk about why you lay
• 1:10:15
Speaker D: about whatever. Is that from Africa?
• 1:10:20
Speaker B: No, it's a desert. It's like a succulent kind of crop. And agri life created a variety out there at Newt, which is the one that's out by quarterway. What are y' all in there? Oh,
• 1:10:32
  Speaker A: halfway.
• 1:10:33
Speaker B: Yeah, halfway. There's also a quarterway, too. Yeah. So, yeah. Anyway, they. It's. It replaces rubber and latex, and so but people that have. But still there. Again, how fast would. I don't know. I mean, like, I know they're using. They've been growing in Arizona, and they are using it in tires, you know, so seems like there could be a market, but somebody. I mean, it's being studied here, and
• 1:10:59
Speaker C: there's some people that are starting to grow agave. Not. Not agave. What is that what they make tequila with agave? Yeah. In the US for tequila production. And the trick, of course, the thing about that is, like, you know, it's the same manufacturing process, but if it's not grown in Jalisco.
• 1:11:19
  Speaker B: Right.
• 1:11:19
Speaker C: You can't call it tequila.
• 1:11:20
  Speaker D: It's just like
• 1:11:23
  Speaker C: champagne
• 1:11:23
  Speaker D: or. Champagne.
• 1:11:24
Speaker C: Yeah, champagne. Yeah. It's Prosecco or sparkling.
• 1:11:27
Speaker D: Champagne is a region in France, in case people don't know,
• 1:11:31
Speaker B: county the same or county is a mix of.
• 1:11:33
  Speaker C: County's just.
• 1:11:34
Speaker D: It's a place also. But most. Once you get out of the US Everything, like if it says a name on it, it's. It's because if it's a region. Yeah. So that region has protected itself. So even though it's the same process, the same grapes, but grown at a different area, they have the name of their trademark.
• 1:11:52
Speaker C: Like bourbon is. Bourbon is Bourbon. But it requires it. But it. To be Bourbon, it has to have a certain recipe. The mash bill has to be. I think it's 51% corn. Is that what it has to be to be bourbon?
• 1:12:03
Speaker D: But I know there's a difference between corn and whiskey.
• 1:12:05
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:12:07
Speaker A: But I think kind of like the champagne. I think scotch has to be
• 1:12:10
Speaker C: in. I think. Yes. Yeah. Yeah,
• 1:12:13
  Speaker D: that's right.
• 1:12:14
  Speaker C: You can get.
• 1:12:15
Speaker A: It's one like champagne.
• 1:12:16
Speaker D: It's rye. Isn't. Is it made out of rye or is it made out of corn? I don't know what. I
• 1:12:20
  Speaker A: think it's rye.
• 1:12:22
Speaker B: Why didn't we think about doing that with cotton? We could have said, you can't grow cotton and call it cotton.
• 1:12:27
Speaker D: Yeah, because it's growing all over them. Yeah. Well, because they've been doing. They've been growing grapes over there for, you know, like two millennia. This
• 1:12:36
Speaker B: is like what milk. Wish they would have done and patent the word milk.
• 1:12:40
  Speaker C: Yeah. So
• 1:12:40
  Speaker B: that. You can't.
• 1:12:41
Speaker A: You're going to get me off on a whole
• 1:12:46
  Speaker B: nut juice.
• 1:12:48
Speaker D: Do y' all speak. Do
• 1:12:49
  Speaker A: y' all do
• 1:12:49
  Speaker D: much dairy production?
• 1:12:51
  Speaker A: We don't know.
• 1:12:52
Speaker D: You don't. I didn't feel any research or anything on that,
• 1:12:55
Speaker A: so. So we're starting to do some forage work for beef cattle and potentially dairies. Looking at some silage and stuff like that. But the actual animal part of that right now we do not have one cloven hoof. That's what I tell people because I've dealt with them and everybody's like, todd, we need to get some. Some cows. And I'm going. Right.
• 1:13:18
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 1:13:21
Speaker A: You don't just buy a lot of cattle and put them out there and poof, they take care of them.
• 1:13:25
  Speaker D: Right? Yeah.
• 1:13:26
Speaker C: Well, you know, it's. Oh, good night. What's his name? Oh, my Lord of mercy. He's out there. Been out there for years. Does most of the other crops.
• 1:13:36
  Speaker A: Calvin
• 1:13:36
Speaker C: Trossle. Calvin and. Sorry, Calvin, if you're listening, I apologize for.
• 1:13:39
  Speaker B: But he is.
• 1:13:40
  Speaker C: But he did.
• 1:13:41
  Speaker B: Yes.
• 1:13:41
Speaker A: No, he is not.
• 1:13:42
Speaker C: He used. I remember him doing research on dad's place. Looking at different Types of grasses to look at how much, you know, which one they could was the best grazing grass. And he had WWB doll, which tell him, I don't want to do that. I don't want to mean it. I like blue stem, but not old water blue stem. And so, you know, looking at how it would do as far as raising cows and this was back in the 90s. I mean, it was shortly after he. He hadn't been there long. Well, there was
• 1:14:08
Speaker B: work in the 90s with cattle, cotton and forage rotation done at tech. I mean, doctor, I can't remember.
• 1:14:19
  Speaker A: Vivian Allen.
• 1:14:20
Speaker B: Vivian Allen, yes. Yeah. She did some really fascinating work. And I feel like we're kind of just now catching on
• 1:14:28
Speaker A: the two problems that I had with that research back then. And I still think some of it's somewhat true, even though we're starting to get limited enough with water was the problem that I had. So the economics that made the grass work was she included the selling of the seed. And that's. And that's just like all these other things. Like
• 1:14:49
  Speaker D: an
• 1:14:49
  Speaker A: either or
• 1:14:49
  Speaker D: thing, though.
• 1:14:50
Speaker A: Yeah. If you're the guy selling the seed, this deal's a great deal. But there's only like three of us.
• 1:14:54
  Speaker D: Yeah, yeah. Right
• 1:14:55
Speaker A: before we flood the market and make the seed not worth anything.
• 1:14:59
  Speaker C: Right.
• 1:15:00
Speaker A: Because that even happened with some of the crp. You know, a lot of guys got into raising that seed, crashed the seed market on it.
• 1:15:07
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:15:07
Speaker A: Especially on like love grass or beetle.
• 1:15:09
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:15:10
Speaker A: Or those types. So that was the one issue that I had with that. Secondly, I kept saying, okay, if I grow this side in grass, then I'm going to pump the water across the road to my pivot over there. And I'm really not going to save water because that was part of that deal, was trying to save the Ogallala. And I said, in theory, that's great.
• 1:15:31
Speaker D: People still going to pump whatever they can.
• 1:15:33
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:15:35
Speaker A: And so that was some of the stuff. But no, we're definitely. We're being forced to look at some of these alternative options now where like say you can only water half a pivot, but what am I going to do with the other half and what works best? And so, yeah, I think that's going to increase. Which takes me back talking about some of the farm bills and stuff. I often wonder and would argue if you look, have we actually reduced rotation in a lot of these areas?
• 1:16:07
  Speaker C: 100% we've reduced it.
• 1:16:09
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 1:16:09
Speaker A: Which I would say is not necessarily good.
• 1:16:11
  Speaker D: No,
• 1:16:12
Speaker C: listen, I never thought I would say it, but I Would love to have the 80s farm where you had to have the 30, 30, 30 where you had to force manage. You had mandatory set aside. I mean just because it would, I mean it would stretch water. But the thing about it is the economics still just don't work. I mean the economics, it's all. When it all comes down to a spreadsheet, every decision that a farmer has to make has to be justified by a spreadsheet.
• 1:16:37
Speaker B: But in their landlord, their landlord knows exactly what they're getting at the end of the day and they want cotton
• 1:16:44
Speaker A: right where. But like you said in the before the 96 farm bill they were forced to have
• 1:16:49
  Speaker B: a third
• 1:16:49
Speaker A: of that farm in sorghum.
• 1:16:51
  Speaker C: Yeah,
• 1:16:52
  Speaker A: it
• 1:16:52
  Speaker C: was
• 1:16:52
  Speaker A: our set
• 1:16:53
Speaker C: aside. The third of row crop, third grass and third set aside because I remember. But the bad thing, the weird thing about is our set aside place was always the same place. It was always the same lake bottom in Prairie Dog Town. But you know, and not changing the subject but you know, looking at cotton and how why it's you know, ubiquitous like it's grown everywhere. I was when I was in Kansas. I stopped at a four way stop sign and turned right and drove. Crossed into the city limits of sublet Kansas and on my left hand side of the road was a circle of cotton. And I was asking, I said where do y' all gin that? And he named off three gins within 30 miles of sublet Kansas.
• 1:17:31
Speaker D: Yeah, they're growing, they. Some dude tried to grow it in North Dakota this year. You see that? I don't think it, I don't think it's gonna make it. I think it already got froze out. But he let it get like 5 foot tall and didn't
• 1:17:41
  Speaker B: put. It
• 1:17:42
Speaker D: was like it was a little bitty garden. Yeah, it
• 1:17:46
Speaker C: was like it was like the equivalent of having a one acre vineyard. I call, I don't call those actually a vineyard. That's just a large landscaping project, you know and so but yeah, I mean it's, it's just wild what you got in that. But the, the ability now with prices of beef that they are and what it looks like they're going to stay. And I, I listened to the, the way I heard it podcast with Micro and he had Brooke Rollins on and she was right and he, he had her, he interviewed her. Then right after that they had the 300,000 metric tons they let in. I did not realize that on a normal year the US imports 303 million metric tons of beef every year
• 1:18:28
  Speaker B: as
• 1:18:28
Speaker C: it is. She said, I think it was 20. I can't remember what year it was. It was sometime within. In recent. Within a handful of years the US Became a net importer of food.
• 1:18:41
  Speaker B: Yeah.
• 1:18:42
  Speaker C: Which is asinine.
• 1:18:43
  Speaker B: It is.
• 1:18:44
Speaker C: It is beyond as. And that's what one thing that I say that to. When you're looking at. When a farmer looks at going to a rotational program where he does include livestock on his thing, which is an. If you've never done it people it's. Imagine what your dog is like, multiply it times a thousand and then increase it logarithmically. It is a pain in the rear. I mean there's. It just is. And so that cost of. The cost of doing it. You have to include the cost of this job just stinks. I mean it's just
• 1:19:17
Speaker B: some people love it.
• 1:19:18
  Speaker C: Some people do
• 1:19:19
  Speaker D: love it.
• 1:19:19
Speaker C: Some people do. I'm not saying. But I'm. What I'm from a farmer standpoint.
• 1:19:23
  Speaker B: Yeah. You're changing.
• 1:19:24
  Speaker C: You're changing that. You're
• 1:19:26
Speaker B: changing your job. If you're.
• 1:19:27
Speaker C: But I mean. But listen, if you're a rancher, I can promise you you could say the same thing about a row crop. Oh my God, I'm not gonna do it, bro. That's just all. You know. But anyway.
• 1:19:35
Speaker B: But so the cowman can be friends. According to the new view Oklahoma.
• 1:19:38
Speaker C: Well, that's what Rogers and Hammerstein. But they were Yankees. They didn't know anything. But during NRCS and the USDA does do have programs to help you build permanent fencing.
• 1:19:49
Speaker A: Yeah. Which that's the one thing I think that because I go back to the old CRP and that to me a couple things that was a real mistake was one was some of the grasses that
• 1:19:58
Speaker D: they should not let us plant. Love grass. Yeah. It should have all been native grass.
• 1:20:03
Speaker A: But then, you know there in a lot of those areas there was no fence support.
• 1:20:09
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:20:09
Speaker A: To go into that or in some cases water development.
• 1:20:12
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:20:13
Speaker A: You know. So the minute those came out of contract, the only thing to do with them was.
• 1:20:19
Speaker D: And who knew that that was going to be like a boom because all of a sudden it's instantly organic.
• 1:20:24
  Speaker A: Yeah. And
• 1:20:25
Speaker D: so all the crp. I don't know all of it, but a huge chunk is coming
• 1:20:28
Speaker A: out. So. So that was a huge mistake to me was the species. And. And I go back to. Because also being a quail hunter that you know those.
• 1:20:38
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:20:39
Speaker A: Be doll love grass. That was like the worst thing for quail population. It was great for deer. Well,
• 1:20:44
  Speaker C: it's what
• 1:20:44
  Speaker A: they use
• 1:20:46
Speaker C: switchgrass. I think off of the cap. And it was just as bad. Whatever they used over there was just as bad as this.
• 1:20:52
Speaker A: Yeah. But even like, you know, say, Paducah, that area was a bunch of love grass. Yeah. You know. Yeah, that's. That's almost as sterile.
• 1:21:00
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:21:00
Speaker A: You might as well.
• 1:21:01
Speaker C: You might as well put Bermuda grass in
• 1:21:03
Speaker A: at the same. Cattle don't want to eat it either.
• 1:21:05
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 1:21:05
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:21:06
  Speaker A: You know,
• 1:21:06
Speaker C: and that's the. And that, you know, when they. If they. If. And you know, heaven forbid that I ever think that the government would be forward thinking and thoughtful, but if they'd have done it right, you know, you could have transitioned right out of that program into cattle production.
• 1:21:21
  Speaker A: Yes.
• 1:21:22
Speaker C: And you could have had livestock, you could have had wildlife. You know that. You could have gotten it. Maybe. You'd have a lot of things. Not just consumptive wildlife, like quail hunting, but also, you know, non traditional. There's a lot of tourism now that'll go out. People just come somewhere else to go. Bird watching.
• 1:21:39
  Speaker A: Yes.
• 1:21:39
Speaker C: You know that. That stuff is an option that's out there that was just completely glossed over. And I mean, I know a place right now that I remember planting in love grass. I mean, I didn't plant the love grass. I got to run the 4020 open cab tractor with a disc behind me plowing it before we planted the hay grazer and it went into Lovegrass. It is to this day still in love grass. Which is amazing that it lasted this long
• 1:22:04
Speaker D: because that was in like. Like 88.
• 1:22:06
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:22:07
Speaker D: Whenever Oliver north was getting like
• 1:22:11
  Speaker B: he had
• 1:22:12
Speaker D: me and Doug. Me and Doug did that for dad. Yeah. Put in. That's how we made. Where's one year we thought we were gonna go broke. And so like Dad's like. We got to put in crp. And so me and Tillery's husband drove tractors. All of a sudden,
• 1:22:24
Speaker B: Andy had bricked up a little tv. It was in
• 1:22:27
  Speaker D: our van. It
• 1:22:28
Speaker B: was from the van. And he was watching the Oliver North.
• 1:22:31
Speaker D: That's the only thing I could get was the Oliver north trial. So I know I've listened to every word of that trial while I was playing crp,
• 1:22:38
Speaker C: but you know that stuff. But that you can. I can start turn of that place right now. Not here. Coil. It's been in nothing but grass for, you know, two cycles of the CRP program. Still on here. Bird out there.
• 1:22:50
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 1:22:50
Speaker D: Hey, Todd, who does the. The who. There was a guy that did all the economic work at Agrilife as far as like the economics of what it caught. They would release a deal every year. This is what it cost to grow. But it was an economist who.
• 1:23:05
Speaker A: Jackie Smith was at.
• 1:23:06
Speaker D: Jackie Smith, who does that now?
• 1:23:09
Speaker A: Andrew Wright. Okay. Has replaced him.
• 1:23:12
  Speaker B: Have
• 1:23:12
Speaker D: they. Have they. Have they like put in like gone and like just put in all the parameters and stuff like that. We talk about with the water going down with drip irrigation with the cattle like they are with the different grasses and stuff and, and our, our new normal for rainfall and like say what is the most economic thing that would give you the most profit to grow on a half a section that has two pivots and 200 gallons of water? Had they done that? Have they.
• 1:23:39
Speaker A: So I don't know if they've been that specific but Andrew's a part of. And I know and Will Keelan's one of our other economists. Okay. They're on a project with Katie Lewis and Joseph Burke. It's a SAS project that is looking at some of that. Exactly. Like converting some of that to grass. How does that impact. Yeah, but, but so yeah, there's a project involved in that. It's probably not to that level of detail you're talking about. Yeah, but it is looking. It
• 1:24:10
Speaker D: would be just. It would just be interesting to just take it in AI and just like put all of the stuff in
• 1:24:15
  Speaker B: it
• 1:24:16
Speaker D: and just like put everything in it and like see what it spits out. And you know, the more information that you give it the better. The more research data that you download in it, the better it gets it doing. I just, I just wonder like what is the best use of that half a section with two pivots and 200 gallons of water with eight wells, that's 25 gallons a minute of the well. It's. So is it to take 30 acres, put it in drip, leave the pivots, run them two times a year to get the grass up and then run cattle, semi irrigated or dry land cattle on the rest of it. But put the water on the cotton. I mean because I think that's where we're headed. Unless they come out with CRP at like 100 bucks an acre.
• 1:24:57
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:24:57
Speaker D: Which is what it needs to be to get a lot of stuff in. I think.
• 1:25:00
Speaker C: Well like Terry county is still maxed out. It. I look, I've. I've looked to see how much and apparently 20% of Terry county it's still is CRP. That's what
• 1:25:08
  Speaker D: shocks me.
• 1:25:09
Speaker C: I saw, I saw two different numbers. They were close enough and they were both from government. They were both from government sources. Or.gov website. So I thought they might. There
• 1:25:16
Speaker B: is a well, easement pros program and Katie was the one that was telling me that the last I had heard, the numbers weren't very good on it, but she said, they've gone up.
• 1:25:24
Speaker D: It's still not good. But think about it, like, just right after Trump got elected, he gave everybody 100 bucks an acre just for nut for. Just for nothing, for. Thanks for voting for me. I mean, honestly, they gave and then. Then they did. Did it again. Like, if you just said, like, you're gonna get a hundred bucks an acre, which. That.
• 1:25:41
Speaker B: That's what the bank is counting on. I mean, the bank is going, I'll get you alone. Because I know sometimes we're gonna get money somewhere, some way from the government.
• 1:25:49
Speaker D: That's why I keep telling farmers, you don't really want a farm program, because when they, when the bank has a certain number they can put in there and they know that's the max you're gonna get. There's no this deal. You can say, well, yeah, but, you know, Trump's done this. Like, I think we're gonna get another hundred or two hundred. Because the banks know before the farmer does.
• 1:26:05
Speaker A: Yeah. And some of that, you know, at least my understanding. I'm not an expert on European agriculture, but that's basically kind of how they work is, you know, up front, you're gonna get this money from the government to be a farmer. Now there's rules and restrictions that come with those
• 1:26:21
  Speaker C: that are. Whoa.
• 1:26:23
Speaker A: Yeah. Like, I saw a guy like, he was a dairy. Dairy and a wheat farmer, and like, they dictated his rotation and like they dictated how many dairy cows he could have based on his land units. And he, like, had to move them. He had a portable milking parlor.
• 1:26:41
  Speaker D: Dang.
• 1:26:42
Speaker A: Because he had. Basically, you have to move those cattle so often.
• 1:26:46
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:26:47
Speaker B: Because they have horrible. And I'm gonna say, like, after being there, I'm like, yeah, because they're. Their water is like 2 inches under the surface.
• 1:26:54
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:26:54
Speaker A: And. And a lot of rolling and stuff like that, too. Yeah. So.
• 1:26:57
  Speaker B: But.
• 1:26:58
Speaker A: But anyway, it's, you know, but like, what you're talking about, you know, is that
• 1:27:04
Speaker C: where you want to go with it or not?
• 1:27:06
Speaker D: Well, because then all of a sudden you have land. Then you have the people that own the land. Then all of a sudden they're in charge of the. Of it because they're going to take the hundred bucks. Right. And they're
• 1:27:14
  Speaker A: just
• 1:27:14
Speaker D: going to leave it in crp. And if they want to put a fence on it or whatever. Unless somebody comes and pays them 125 bucks an acre to graze. I don't even know what grazing goes for now, but I know I used to get less than 20 cents a pound on the gain and I think I heard a couple years ago it had gone up dang near a dollar.
• 1:27:31
  Speaker A: Yeah,
• 1:27:32
Speaker D: I mean, it's real. The, the economics of that stuff has changed a lot. I
• 1:27:35
Speaker C: know rent and pasture. I talked to a guy and it's. It's been a year and change since I talked to him and he had leased a ranch and it hadn't been broken out. It was a native. Native ranch. And I think he was only paying five bucks an acre.
• 1:27:51
Speaker D: Yeah. So you can't.
• 1:27:51
Speaker C: That won't even pay
• 1:27:52
Speaker D: taxes. Yeah. All of our taxes are built on all of this production that we're supposed to be making and money that's rolling in and it ain't happening.
• 1:28:02
  Speaker C: Well,
• 1:28:02
  Speaker B: on the happiness.
• 1:28:03
  Speaker D: He's got something.
• 1:28:05
Speaker A: Well, I was going to say back to. You were talking about cattle and, and obviously it's a whole different deal than crop. Not to say we're not going to grow ourself out of this profit, but it does take a little longer.
• 1:28:17
  Speaker C: Yeah,
• 1:28:19
Speaker A: yeah, but, but I would argue and, and not to say that prices of meat aren't high, but it's. I heard a guy years ago say no, it's where it needs to be.
• 1:28:29
  Speaker B: Right. Yes, right,
• 1:28:31
  Speaker D: right.
• 1:28:32
  Speaker C: That's.
• 1:28:33
Speaker B: I do think people feel
• 1:28:34
  Speaker D: like,
• 1:28:34
Speaker B: like we have the right to, you know, speech, worship and cheap groceries.
• 1:28:39
Speaker C: Well, and that's. But that's what the farm program has always been was cheap groceries.
• 1:28:43
  Speaker A: Yes,
• 1:28:43
Speaker C: that's why, that's what. The thing that a lot of people don't understand is that the reason farmers get money is so that your grocery bill is low because that's, that's what the two. Cheap groceries and a growing in functional, healthy agricultural economy are not two things that occur at the same time without some money coming in from somewhere else. I mean, subsidies exist for a reason and that's to keep them cheap.
• 1:29:09
Speaker D: Well, I think it'd just be cool, I mean, like if you had, if you did. If we did become more of a cattle economy and we. And, and what it does, like, yeah, you got to go to Costco or wherever you go to get your beef. But you, but instead of that, like, there's so many growers that are media savvy, they can go to the farmer that grows the cattle like they want, but in order for that to happen, you have to have these small processing plants. And I think that is the key in growing the cattle market here. Y' all know more about that than I do. But aren't they trying to do.
• 1:29:39
Speaker C: Yes. That Brooke Rollins addressed that very issue. She did on that microphone. Well, let's say
• 1:29:44
Speaker B: so. Mindy Braziers. So she's from tech and she is in the Trump administration and her family had. I don't know if they still own. It was a meat locker in Amarillo. And she is. She's really worked. I mean, her food safety is her gig, but she knows. She knows the business inside out. And she is there doing a good job, really trying to advocate.
• 1:30:07
Speaker C: Well, throwing local things. Throwing things into local and wrapping this up because we're a little bit over time. There is a place called.
• 1:30:14
Speaker D: It was like five minutes ago that you walked in here, dude.
• 1:30:17
Speaker C: But there's a place on. I think it's. It's. It's one of the. It's south. It's close to the. The new loop. South University, South Indiana, something like that out there called the Butcher shop. And it is a locally owned.
• 1:30:33
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 1:30:33
Speaker C: Locally raised beef butcher shop. And that I would, you know, go out there. I don't. I just unfortunately just stocked up on. On meat. So I'm good. And hunting season just started, so I'm fixing to stock up some more. But, you know, find the place like that. Go to it.
• 1:30:52
Speaker B: So. And also wanted to say that. That the doctor I was talking about, it is severa and it's C E R V E R A. He's in Pyramid Plaza and it's called the heart rhythm. The Heart rhythm. Sorry, I had it just here in a minute. Anyway, he's great.
• 1:31:11
  Speaker C: If
• 1:31:11
Speaker B: you're having heart problems, go see him.
• 1:31:12
Speaker C: Todd, you are also great.
• 1:31:14
  Speaker B: Thank you. Too
• 1:31:14
  Speaker C: great.
• 1:31:15
Speaker D: You didn't get two words in edgewise.
• 1:31:19
Speaker C: You ought to see us if we gotta break out a bottle of whiskey. One of these things you never did. Todd, thank you so much. It's always great to have you here. And we look forward to the next time. In case you don't. In case everybody doesn't know. Todd is one that comes. This a recurring guest.
• 1:31:36
Speaker B: Yeah. Texas Agri Life. He's
• 1:31:37
Speaker D: head of Agri Life. Lubbock, Texas. Texas.
• 1:31:41
Speaker C: It's great to have you. We'll find something else to complain about next time you're here.
• 1:31:44
Speaker B: Yep. And next week I will be gone. I'm gonna be on vacation.
• 1:31:48
Speaker D: Oh, you just really.
• 1:31:50
  Speaker B: Yes, I know.
• 1:31:51
  Speaker D: Exactly.
• 1:31:53
Speaker B: Wait a second. Are you gonna. And Doug is actually going with me.
• 1:31:56
  Speaker D: Good.
• 1:31:57
Speaker B: Yeah. So. And that's great. So. But y' all be here, and Jeremy Brown will be here, so I'm. I hate to miss it, but I'll be driving the Natchez Trace. Yeah. Excited about it.
• 1:32:09
  Speaker C: That's cool.
• 1:32:10
Speaker B: We'll see you all next time.
• 1:32:11
  Speaker D: All right.
