- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:15Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. This is episode number two and
- 0:18Speaker 1: forty six, and today we are back with our RUT
- 0:21Speaker 1: Radio miniseries in which we hear from hunters all across
- 0:24Speaker 1: the country about the latest deer activity and behavior, the
- 0:27Speaker 1: progress of the white tail Rut, and the tactics that
- 0:29Speaker 1: are working right now. All right, welcome to the Wired
- 0:47Speaker 1: to Hunt podcast, brought to you by Onyx, and today
- 0:51Speaker 1: we are back for RUT radio. And this is kind
- 0:55Speaker 1: of when RUT radio hits its stride, I feel, because
- 1:00Speaker 1: we are now there. In the words of I think
- 1:04Speaker 1: Bing Crosby, I think Frank Sinatra, I think just about
- 1:07Speaker 1: any probably Michael Bubla, Harry kind of JR. It's the
- 1:09Speaker 1: most wonderful time of year. I think they've all said
- 1:11Speaker 1: that on a song at some point, and and it
- 1:15Speaker 1: really is. It's not Christmas, it's the Rut. It's uh,
- 1:19Speaker 1: it's basically here because when this podcast drops is Halloween,
- 1:24Speaker 1: I think, and sweet November will be right at our fingertips.
- 1:29Speaker 1: And what we do here on RUT Radio if you're
- 1:31Speaker 1: not familiar, as we chat with hunters from all across
- 1:33Speaker 1: the country to get the latest and greatest on what's
- 1:35Speaker 1: happening in the woods right now. What's the progress of
- 1:38Speaker 1: the rut, What kind of sign are we seeing, what
- 1:40Speaker 1: kind of deer activity are we seeing? What are the
- 1:42Speaker 1: conditions and variables present that are impacting deer and deer hunting.
- 1:47Speaker 1: That's the kind of stuff that we have for you today.
- 1:49Speaker 1: And Spencer new Heart is the man who goes out
- 1:51Speaker 1: and collects all that. Spencer, are you as excited as
- 1:54Speaker 1: I am? Yeah, I'm I'm echoing your enthusiasm for this
- 1:58Speaker 1: time of year because only on RUT Radio, we're going
- 2:01Speaker 1: to start hearing some things that involve rutting. So you
- 2:05Speaker 1: know you're gonna hear some pre rut stuff, talk about
- 2:08Speaker 1: seeking and chasing, all this stuff that gets you excited
- 2:11Speaker 1: for the end of October and the beginning of November. Yes,
- 2:15Speaker 1: I've we've been waiting all the year for this and
- 2:17Speaker 1: it's here. And uh, you, my friend, have a little
- 2:21Speaker 1: bit of a rut report that you could probably share,
- 2:24Speaker 1: Is that right? I heard you did some hunting in
- 2:25Speaker 1: South Dakota Yeah, I've been jumping around the state hunting
- 2:28Speaker 1: some different pieces and makes of public and private and uh,
- 2:32Speaker 1: basically from now to the next month, I'll be hunting
- 2:36Speaker 1: nearly every day and so uh, this last week was
- 2:39Speaker 1: really exciting. It was the stuff that makes archery hunting
- 2:43Speaker 1: super fun and super frustrating. Twice I had shooters uh
- 2:47Speaker 1: within forty five yards. It just never came together for
- 2:50Speaker 1: me where I was giving an opportunity. But I'm comforted
- 2:54Speaker 1: that it is the end of October and the best
- 2:57Speaker 1: is yet to come. But on both of those hunts,
- 2:59Speaker 1: it was dealing with deer that were acting how you
- 3:04Speaker 1: would think they would act this time of year. The
- 3:06Speaker 1: one buck came in tearing up some scrapes. The other
- 3:09Speaker 1: buck came through dogging a doll. Uh like basically the
- 3:13Speaker 1: middle of the afternoon. It was almost four hours before sunset.
- 3:16Speaker 1: So uh, the deer are doing what we want them
- 3:20Speaker 1: to now. I just got to be in the right
- 3:21Speaker 1: place at the right time. But Mark you, on the
- 3:24Speaker 1: other hand, you did get it done. Congrats on the
- 3:26Speaker 1: awesome Nebraska buck. Super proud and super jealous. I know
- 3:31Speaker 1: you're gonna say most of the story for your regular episode,
- 3:34Speaker 1: dropping on Thursday. But on that hunt of what kind
- 3:38Speaker 1: of running activity did you see? Yeah, well, thank you.
- 3:41Speaker 1: First off, it was it was really cool and as
- 3:44Speaker 1: far as the activity that I saw, I definitely was
- 3:46Speaker 1: seeing what you hope to see at the end of October.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Some of that pre rut leading into the right activity.
- 3:51Speaker 1: UM saw bucks making scrapes and saw bucks beginning to
- 3:56Speaker 1: cruise a little bit. I saw mature buck up on
- 3:58Speaker 1: his feet, probably similar to what you saw about four
- 4:01Speaker 1: hours before dark, cruising a river bottom. Almost got a
- 4:04Speaker 1: shot at him. And then about two hours before dark,
- 4:07Speaker 1: I saw another buck doing the same thing and I
- 4:11Speaker 1: did get a shot at him, and UM. Another thing
- 4:14Speaker 1: that he was doing related to running activity is that
- 4:16Speaker 1: he was very susceptible to calling. He definitely was rutted up,
- 4:20Speaker 1: fired up, and aggressive because I was able to call
- 4:23Speaker 1: him into range with a snort wheeze, So I got
- 4:27Speaker 1: really aggressive with that. Could tell he was probably the
- 4:29Speaker 1: big boss in the area, big rutted up neck, biggest
- 4:32Speaker 1: year I've seen down there, and UM decided to challenge
- 4:35Speaker 1: him and that worked. He came right in. So you know,
- 4:39Speaker 1: there were not a lot of deer in this area.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Without without sharing too much about the hunt. Very low
- 4:43Speaker 1: deer density. UM, So I wasn't seeing like tons of
- 4:46Speaker 1: chasing or scraping or anything, or sorry chasing or um
- 4:49Speaker 1: seeking or anything. But there was a little bit of
- 4:51Speaker 1: that cruising beginning. And um, like I said, calling worked
- 4:55Speaker 1: so as far as Nebraska, I'd give it like a
- 4:58Speaker 1: like a six or seven on the scale probably um,
- 5:02Speaker 1: and I'm sure it's just gonna get better. Yeah. Well,
- 5:04Speaker 1: this week on the episode, we talked to Hayden Krimmer
- 5:07Speaker 1: from Legendary White Tails Wisconsin, and then Hunter Forbes in
- 5:10Speaker 1: Kentucky from Southern White Tail Outfitters, and then Trent Siegel
- 5:14Speaker 1: in Kansas from Heartland Bow Hunter, and then in Georgia
- 5:16Speaker 1: from Georgia Field is Brian Grossman Excellence? Do we do
- 5:21Speaker 1: we have any themes yet in mind? Um, or anything
- 5:23Speaker 1: that's on your mind that you think is going to
- 5:25Speaker 1: be a theme based off of things we've seen traditionally
- 5:27Speaker 1: this time of year. Again, I'm gonna jump back to
- 5:31Speaker 1: last year's episodes. Last year we were hitting cold fronts
- 5:35Speaker 1: just perfectly timed. We talked about in last episode if
- 5:37Speaker 1: you pulled a lot of calendar and circled the dates,
- 5:39Speaker 1: he wanted cold fronts to rolland uh, we got them.
- 5:42Speaker 1: They were coming on the weekend. They were, you know,
- 5:45Speaker 1: happening right when some of the best running activity was happening.
- 5:48Speaker 1: That's not going to be the case this year. And
- 5:51Speaker 1: so you know, there'll be some nuanced stuff that we
- 5:54Speaker 1: talked about to help you kill him, ature buck. But
- 5:57Speaker 1: like you and Dan talked about on the getting ready
- 6:00Speaker 1: you for the Rut episode, the number one factor for
- 6:02Speaker 1: you killing a deer right now and just putting in
- 6:04Speaker 1: the time and being in the woods. Yeah, that's the truth.
- 6:08Speaker 1: And you know something that's worth noting. And this is
- 6:10Speaker 1: a hard lesson I learned a handful of years ago,
- 6:12Speaker 1: UM and me and Andy May when we were out
- 6:14Speaker 1: there in Nebraska, we were talking about this and how
- 6:16Speaker 1: we both had experienced it. Um. This being the fact
- 6:19Speaker 1: that during the rut sometimes you want to be careful
- 6:23Speaker 1: not to get too wrapped up in the weather conditions
- 6:25Speaker 1: and things like that and let those depress you in anyway. So,
- 6:29Speaker 1: for example, back in two thousand and fifteen, I was
- 6:31Speaker 1: out in Iowa and I was hunting, and I hit
- 6:34Speaker 1: this cold front and then a big warm spell came
- 6:36Speaker 1: through and it was gonna be in like the mid
- 6:37Speaker 1: to high seventies, and I just remember thinking, me and
- 6:39Speaker 1: all my friends were thinking, oh gosh, it's gonna ruin
- 6:42Speaker 1: on our rut vacation. Um, there's nothing, nothing's gonna be moving,
- 6:46Speaker 1: blah bla blah blah blah. And in most times of year,
- 6:50Speaker 1: you're gonna see this reduction and dear activity when it gets,
- 6:52Speaker 1: you know, unseasonably warm. And there was a reduction in
- 6:55Speaker 1: dear activity during that time period, but it is the rut,
- 6:59Speaker 1: and things still happened during the rut. And I because
- 7:03Speaker 1: I thought maybe I could cash in on get some
- 7:05Speaker 1: brownie points by going home, I decided to leave Iowa
- 7:08Speaker 1: for a couple of days, take care of some family
- 7:10Speaker 1: stuff during this warm spell, and then come back when
- 7:13Speaker 1: the temperatures start dropping again. During that two days that
- 7:16Speaker 1: I was gone, three of my friends all killed nice,
- 7:20Speaker 1: big mature bucks despite the warm weather. So it was
- 7:23Speaker 1: just a great reminder that you never want to get
- 7:25Speaker 1: too caught up in it during this time of year.
- 7:27Speaker 1: This it's it's the rut. You gotta be out there
- 7:29Speaker 1: whether it's seventy or thirty. Um, yeah, those colder days
- 7:33Speaker 1: might be better, but magical things can happen at any
- 7:36Speaker 1: time out there, so tree stand time is key. Yeah,
- 7:39Speaker 1: and that goes for the other factors outside of weather
- 7:43Speaker 1: as well. Right now, the rut trumps everything and it's
- 7:47Speaker 1: not going to get better than what it's going to
- 7:49Speaker 1: be these next few weeks. Yeah, that's the truth. So
- 7:53Speaker 1: as you you kind of alluded to it. But if
- 7:55Speaker 1: you if you missed it last week's episode of Wired Hunt,
- 7:58Speaker 1: at the end of it, me and Dan kind of
- 7:59Speaker 1: shared some main rut hunting principles, definitely check that one
- 8:02Speaker 1: out for for a couple of this high level concepts
- 8:05Speaker 1: to be keeping in mind during these next couple of
- 8:07Speaker 1: weeks of hunting. Um. But if you'll allow me, Spencer,
- 8:10Speaker 1: do you want to do just one or two other
- 8:12Speaker 1: quick pieces of run hunting advice while we've got people
- 8:14Speaker 1: here before the reports. My my best advice isn't necessarily
- 8:18Speaker 1: something you can apply right now, and it would maybe
- 8:21Speaker 1: go back to what you were doing for the last
- 8:23Speaker 1: few months, But my best rut advice would be to
- 8:27Speaker 1: largely stay out of the areas that you consider your
- 8:30Speaker 1: best spots and uh, you know, the places that you
- 8:34Speaker 1: think you might be sitting all day come this time
- 8:37Speaker 1: of year. Because uh, it's only going to make things
- 8:41Speaker 1: better right now if if you haven't been in there
- 8:44Speaker 1: four or five times, and uh, if you just let
- 8:46Speaker 1: your trail camera soak in there, if you haven't been
- 8:49Speaker 1: hunting it and blowing deer out, that's gonna benefit you
- 8:52Speaker 1: in the long run. And so my best rut hunting
- 8:54Speaker 1: advice would be to, you know, stay out and take
- 8:58Speaker 1: things easy until right out. Yeah. So so that being said,
- 9:02Speaker 1: I guess I'll just reiterate that that stop saving stuff
- 9:07Speaker 1: just about now, like we're about time, it's about time
- 9:09Speaker 1: to go for it. Um. You know, as we get
- 9:12Speaker 1: into these first couple of weeks of November, now is
- 9:14Speaker 1: the point when you need to dive in and throw
- 9:17Speaker 1: some hail Mary's. And now is the time to go
- 9:18Speaker 1: sit that betting here, and now is the time to
- 9:20Speaker 1: dive into that deep funnel location, sit there all day. Um,
- 9:24Speaker 1: you gotta take every little trick you go out up
- 9:26Speaker 1: your sleeve and try it now because this is that
- 9:28Speaker 1: that moment when you can possibly capitalize on it. Um.
- 9:32Speaker 1: So yeah, put in the time, be aggressive when you
- 9:36Speaker 1: have to switch things up, and don't be afraid to
- 9:38Speaker 1: try new things. Um. But as I mentioned last week.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Whenever you're confused or starting to get frustrated, always go
- 9:44Speaker 1: back to the principles of pinch points and dough betting
- 9:47Speaker 1: areas and do activity areas and those things. As long
- 9:50Speaker 1: as you're hunting and somehow related to something like that,
- 9:53Speaker 1: you're gonna be in a good position. And then, of course,
- 9:56Speaker 1: like I had success a couple of days ago, calling
- 9:58Speaker 1: can be particular the effective this time of year as well.
- 10:01Speaker 1: So snort weez is if you really want to get
- 10:03Speaker 1: really aggressive, maybe some extraus bleats rattling can work now.
- 10:07Speaker 1: And now is the time, kind of as I've been
- 10:09Speaker 1: saying several times, now, now is the time to try
- 10:12Speaker 1: these different things. So, um, I think what I'm sensing
- 10:16Speaker 1: is that I am rambling, And when I ramble, that's
- 10:19Speaker 1: usually a good sign that I should just stop and
- 10:21Speaker 1: let you continue the show Spencer with ourt radio guests.
- 10:24Speaker 1: So that sounds a good plan for you. That sounds
- 10:26Speaker 1: like a good plan. Congrats again, Mark on the great deer.
- 10:29Speaker 1: But let's get to our first color. Sounds good. Before
- 10:32Speaker 1: we get to our first color, let's pause for a
- 10:34Speaker 1: word from our sponsors at white Tail Properties. This week.
- 10:37Speaker 1: With white Tail Properties, we are joined by Tom James,
- 10:41Speaker 1: a land specialist out of Central Indiana. And Tom is
- 10:44Speaker 1: going to be telling us about what to look for
- 10:46Speaker 1: when your goal is to flip a property. Okay, great question.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Um First and foremost, looking at a good county in
- 10:54Speaker 1: your state, or even a good part of the county
- 10:56Speaker 1: that is known for producing better quality deer and that
- 11:00Speaker 1: typically easily found out in the in the state's record
- 11:04Speaker 1: book program. So those counties are typically more highly sought
- 11:08Speaker 1: after by buyers um as opposed to you know, maybe
- 11:11Speaker 1: counties that are off out of that parameter. So number one,
- 11:14Speaker 1: a good county, maybe even a better part of the
- 11:17Speaker 1: county that is known for producing better deer. Secondly, I
- 11:20Speaker 1: would look for property that you can pick up right
- 11:23Speaker 1: at market value and slightly under market value, obviously as
- 11:27Speaker 1: a home run, but make sure you do your homework,
- 11:29Speaker 1: find out what the comps and local local l and
- 11:32Speaker 1: is selling for. And that mixed recreational ground and that
- 11:35Speaker 1: would be timber and maybe some pasture, some tillable ground
- 11:38Speaker 1: mixed in. So number two good value at at the
- 11:41Speaker 1: current market price. And number three look at uh sometimes
- 11:46Speaker 1: an often overlooked aspect of timber that people don't know
- 11:48Speaker 1: A lot about is um the quality of the hardwood
- 11:52Speaker 1: species that are on the property. If you can find
- 11:54Speaker 1: eighteen inch and larger diameter trees in their specifically white oaks,
- 11:59Speaker 1: red o, walnut, cherry, um, sugar maple, the white oak
- 12:04Speaker 1: market is extremely hot right now, and anything above that
- 12:08Speaker 1: is gonna that size range is gonna return dividends that
- 12:11Speaker 1: you could use applying to paying the property back off
- 12:14Speaker 1: and also doing some great habitat work in the process
- 12:17Speaker 1: by opening up the canopy and getting some good habitat
- 12:20Speaker 1: work going on in there. If you'd like to learn
- 12:22Speaker 1: more and to see the properties that Tom currently has
- 12:25Speaker 1: listed for sale, visit white Tail properties dot com. Backslash James.
- 12:30Speaker 1: That's j A. M. E. S alright, and joining us
- 12:34Speaker 1: on the line first is Hayden Krimmer in Wisconsin from
- 12:37Speaker 1: legendary white Tails now Hayden in Wisconsin. What would you
- 12:40Speaker 1: say the buck activities ben lately on a scale of
- 12:42Speaker 1: one to ten UM, I would say it's about a
- 12:45Speaker 1: seven right now. Um. Starting to see some more mid
- 12:48Speaker 1: day movement with some mature box and a lot of
- 12:51Speaker 1: younger bucks on their feet cruising their own checking for
- 12:53Speaker 1: those and so the midday movement that's something you've seen
- 12:57Speaker 1: in person, or that's what your trail cameras are telling you. Yeah,
- 13:00Speaker 1: that's something I've seen in person. UM. I was out
- 13:02Speaker 1: in western Wisconsin this weekend. I saw a mature a
- 13:07Speaker 1: mature buck at fourth or four thirty on Sunday and
- 13:12Speaker 1: at eleven thirty I saw that same buck on Saturday, so, UM,
- 13:16Speaker 1: they were definitely on their feet. We also had another
- 13:18Speaker 1: guying camp who killed the buck at eleven thirty on Sunday. UM,
- 13:22Speaker 1: he was following a hot doll and UM, the action
- 13:26Speaker 1: was definitely picking out during mid day. So what types
- 13:29Speaker 1: of areas are you focused on for these all day
- 13:31Speaker 1: sits in Wisconsin? UM, a lot of saddles and funnels.
- 13:36Speaker 1: I also UM focused a little bit on UM just
- 13:39Speaker 1: don win areas of betting as well as food sources.
- 13:43Speaker 1: So trying to be in areas where there's a lot
- 13:45Speaker 1: of thick cover around UM and just good funnels for
- 13:48Speaker 1: them to be working through. Checknford and does so would
- 13:52Speaker 1: you say that's the exact same types of areas that
- 13:54Speaker 1: you'll be focusing for like these next few weeks. As
- 13:56Speaker 1: the running gets better, Yeah, as the running gets better,
- 14:00Speaker 1: I definitely like to stay tight to betting, especially on
- 14:02Speaker 1: all day sets to feel like staying close to bedding
- 14:05Speaker 1: is the best call if there's a better chance that
- 14:08Speaker 1: you're going to catch a buck on its feet checking
- 14:09Speaker 1: those areas for dose. UM. But then in the same situation,
- 14:13Speaker 1: I like to be within the vicinity of some food
- 14:16Speaker 1: sources as well, because that's typically where the doughs are
- 14:18Speaker 1: gonna be. So you want to be in the areas
- 14:20Speaker 1: that the doughs are gonna be. Have you been doing
- 14:22Speaker 1: any calling there in Wisconsin yet? Yeah? So that in
- 14:25Speaker 1: time where I had with the mature buck at eleven
- 14:28Speaker 1: thirty on Saturday, he had came out into a cut
- 14:31Speaker 1: hay field with a dough and he worked a scrape
- 14:34Speaker 1: on the edge of the field and started working um
- 14:37Speaker 1: towards another bedding area. And when he got across the
- 14:41Speaker 1: field that I threw out a grunt at him and
- 14:43Speaker 1: he came on a bee line straight towards me. So UM,
- 14:46Speaker 1: the does Winz definitely wasn't hot since he reacted the
- 14:49Speaker 1: call like that, but it worked like the time I
- 14:51Speaker 1: grunted one time, Adam, and then UM was completely quiet
- 14:54Speaker 1: after that and he came right in. He ended up
- 14:57Speaker 1: working past me at thirty yards that couldn't get a
- 14:59Speaker 1: shot off because the bush is too sick. But that
- 15:01Speaker 1: was one of the best responses I've ever had to
- 15:03Speaker 1: grunk call. He definitely heard it and came straight in
- 15:06Speaker 1: on a string. You mentioned there that you were sitting
- 15:08Speaker 1: on a hay field. What do you think the food
- 15:11Speaker 1: sources look like right now in Wisconsin for someone looking
- 15:14Speaker 1: to kill the mature buck over these next few weeks.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Maybe that's something that people don't always consider a ware
- 15:19Speaker 1: these deer feeding. But what have you been seeing? Yeah,
- 15:23Speaker 1: so what I saw this weekend, the only time I
- 15:25Speaker 1: saw der feeding was out in the hayfield. The other
- 15:28Speaker 1: staying locations I was sitting, there wasn't a lot of UM,
- 15:32Speaker 1: wasn't a lot of other food around. There was some
- 15:34Speaker 1: natural brows, but I didn't see them stopping the brows
- 15:36Speaker 1: on any natural stuff. UM. A lot of the deer
- 15:39Speaker 1: I saw him the timber were if there are bucks,
- 15:41Speaker 1: their cruising looking for dose UM and then the dose
- 15:44Speaker 1: that I saw just and moved right past them, assuming
- 15:46Speaker 1: they were goingly to other food sources. UM. I think
- 15:48Speaker 1: the natural browses kind of slowed down. I think they're
- 15:51Speaker 1: switching to more of that traditional food source. And definitely
- 15:54Speaker 1: there was a lot of feel I saw in that
- 15:55Speaker 1: cut hayfield even the middle of the day two o'clock
- 15:58Speaker 1: there um frequently coming and going out of that cut hayfield.
- 16:02Speaker 1: So are you starting to see some deer now in
- 16:04Speaker 1: areas that previously had only been spots that you were
- 16:08Speaker 1: finding nocturnal movement? Um? Not really. That was the first
- 16:11Speaker 1: time they had hunted that farm this year, so I
- 16:13Speaker 1: don't have much of the reference to go off of.
- 16:15Speaker 1: But before a couple of weeks ago, I was seen
- 16:18Speaker 1: a lot of browsing on acorns and natural brows So, um,
- 16:21Speaker 1: I'd say it's transitioning more away from that. So yes,
- 16:25Speaker 1: it's it's changing going forward. Then the sex week or so,
- 16:29Speaker 1: what do you think that buck activity is going to
- 16:30Speaker 1: be on a scale of one to ten in Wisconsin?
- 16:33Speaker 1: I think it's going to be anywhere from a nine
- 16:35Speaker 1: to ten. I think the end of October is usually
- 16:37Speaker 1: when that first deal comes into heat and then every
- 16:40Speaker 1: buck in the area is honored. So I didn't see
- 16:42Speaker 1: there was only that one hot dough that I know
- 16:45Speaker 1: from that guy in camp that ended up feeling that buck.
- 16:48Speaker 1: But there's definitely bucks moving around looking for dolls. I
- 16:51Speaker 1: think in the next couple of days here, Um, those
- 16:54Speaker 1: first early dolls are gonna start popping in. The actions
- 16:57Speaker 1: really gonna heat up. Alright, great Intel, Hayden, thanks for
- 17:00Speaker 1: on me. Thanks Spencer alright and joining us on the line.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Next is Hunter Forbes from Southern White Tail Outfitters in Kentucky.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Now Hunter in Kentucky. What would you say the bucket
- 17:10Speaker 1: activities man lately? On a scale of one to ten, Man,
- 17:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna have to give it around with six right now.
- 17:16Speaker 1: The way the weather has been here lately, it's just
- 17:19Speaker 1: it's been a lot of nocturnal movement from them. Um,
- 17:21Speaker 1: daylife activity has been pretty slow. But as soon as
- 17:25Speaker 1: he's a little bit of cold frosts come through, was
- 17:27Speaker 1: gonna be kicking off and be getting a little bit
- 17:29Speaker 1: better for us. Up to this point, I might give
- 17:31Speaker 1: it about a six. And so do you see any
- 17:33Speaker 1: of that promising whether on the way that might turn
- 17:35Speaker 1: things around? Right now as I'm doing this at seventy
- 17:39Speaker 1: seven degrees, honest, it's Warman's blowing hard out of the south.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Looks like a couple of days of rain, and then
- 17:44Speaker 1: towards the end of this week, we should have a
- 17:46Speaker 1: couple of days that we're really looking forward to being
- 17:48Speaker 1: an industry on. Well, looks like you guys have had
- 17:51Speaker 1: some success in Southern white tail outfitters. What have those
- 17:53Speaker 1: set up spend like lately? Everything's been so unpredictable for us.
- 17:58Speaker 1: You know, a lot of the have been seen just quiet,
- 18:00Speaker 1: you know our range. Um, the set up set that
- 18:02Speaker 1: we've been killing them all lately is really been taking
- 18:05Speaker 1: advantage of using some like different cell cams and we've
- 18:09Speaker 1: been able to focus on where you see buck movement
- 18:11Speaker 1: between five and six in the morning, some somewhere right
- 18:14Speaker 1: there where they're gonna bed near it, and it hadn't
- 18:16Speaker 1: been consistent, but um, the deal that we've been able
- 18:19Speaker 1: to take have been pretty much where they stand up
- 18:20Speaker 1: in the afternoons and then to make their way a
- 18:22Speaker 1: little bit of food before they start looking for some
- 18:24Speaker 1: does if we have been having the most of our
- 18:27Speaker 1: success so you've been right on top of their bedding
- 18:29Speaker 1: then or closer to the food source that they've been
- 18:32Speaker 1: hitting in between if we can. You know, every farm
- 18:35Speaker 1: and set ups can be a little different with how
- 18:37Speaker 1: access is and how you can get in there on
- 18:39Speaker 1: them um, but the closer the better, and it's just
- 18:42Speaker 1: it has been changing so much, they're really unpredictable. Um.
- 18:46Speaker 1: But with that little bit information because a lot of
- 18:47Speaker 1: times that if we don't have any kind of mobile
- 18:49Speaker 1: unit on the camera, we're checking in. We're seeing where
- 18:52Speaker 1: we should have been, you know, three and four days ago,
- 18:54Speaker 1: and it's not that most recent information. The biggest thing
- 18:57Speaker 1: is they've definitely out of their patterns and they're slow
- 19:00Speaker 1: really getting there to start looking for those. You know,
- 19:02Speaker 1: the younger bucks are starting bump them around a little bit,
- 19:05Speaker 1: but the mature bucks have been I'm gonna say, of
- 19:08Speaker 1: a movement spent at night and if you catch them
- 19:10Speaker 1: in that timber sent it's gonna be on one of
- 19:11Speaker 1: those other day after the front. As we've seen most
- 19:14Speaker 1: of our deer, the deer that you guys have been killing.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Are those bucks that you've been familiar with or are
- 19:18Speaker 1: you starting to see a lot of mature white tail
- 19:20Speaker 1: start to move in there that maybe you haven't seen
- 19:22Speaker 1: since summer or have never seen it at all. It's
- 19:25Speaker 1: been deer that we're familiar with, you know, and it's
- 19:28Speaker 1: until last night. I'm gonna say last night was the
- 19:30Speaker 1: breakthrough night going through pictures and everything of of seeing
- 19:33Speaker 1: new mature bucks. Um, I've noticed the past three or
- 19:36Speaker 1: four days we've been picking up some no younger through
- 19:39Speaker 1: and a half yold year that we're unfamiliar with. The
- 19:41Speaker 1: last night was the first night and I've been probably
- 19:43Speaker 1: on six or seven cameras we had new mature bucks
- 19:46Speaker 1: show up. Of course I said it was at night.
- 19:49Speaker 1: By that's the step in the right direction that we're
- 19:50Speaker 1: looking for. Have you or any of the hunters and
- 19:53Speaker 1: camp been doing any calling yet, Yes, they have been
- 19:57Speaker 1: and had some little bucks respond to it. Um. We
- 19:59Speaker 1: had a theory that was missed with the muzzle letter
- 20:01Speaker 1: that was actually grunted in he saw him, you know,
- 20:03Speaker 1: well across the field. Um grunted a few times than
- 20:07Speaker 1: dear did come in to where he had a shot opportunity.
- 20:09Speaker 1: So it is working, you know, time and place. As
- 20:12Speaker 1: we get into the best part of the season where uh,
- 20:14Speaker 1: you know, the rutting activity peaks. What were your setups
- 20:17Speaker 1: look like then? Will they be different than what you've
- 20:19Speaker 1: been doing lately or will they be a lot of
- 20:21Speaker 1: the same stuff between feet and bed Um, it will
- 20:25Speaker 1: be a little bit differently. I'll say, we have been
- 20:27Speaker 1: taking advantage of scrape lines right after these rains and
- 20:30Speaker 1: around the front. Um, that's that same area. Get them
- 20:33Speaker 1: coming out of the bed and going to the scrape,
- 20:35Speaker 1: going to food, that whole transition area. UM, we're trying
- 20:39Speaker 1: to keep those as happy as possible on us, UM,
- 20:42Speaker 1: get them super comfortable. And I'd say as we go
- 20:44Speaker 1: closer to the rut, we're gonna be having those food
- 20:46Speaker 1: sources where we have the most those Are those scrape
- 20:49Speaker 1: lines going to be relevant for you guys a little
- 20:51Speaker 1: while yet or is that something you start to not
- 20:53Speaker 1: pay attention to as we hit November. Hey, we're with
- 20:56Speaker 1: the mature bucks. I still haven't seen a lot of
- 20:59Speaker 1: mature bucks um using them in the day. So I
- 21:02Speaker 1: think we have, you know, the better scrape hunting still
- 21:05Speaker 1: in front of us. And it's very likely this this
- 21:07Speaker 1: weekend when that's gonna get right for us. UM. But
- 21:10Speaker 1: I'd say within the next week we're still gonna be
- 21:12Speaker 1: on that as best we can. And then and then
- 21:16Speaker 1: from there we're gonna be going, you know, more of
- 21:18Speaker 1: the food sources, especially in the evenings going forward. Then
- 21:22Speaker 1: the sixt week or so, what do you think that
- 21:23Speaker 1: bucket activity is going to be on a scale of
- 21:25Speaker 1: one to ten in Kentucky. I'm gonna give us an
- 21:28Speaker 1: eight for the weekend. I think that's gonna be the
- 21:30Speaker 1: first one that we're really going to see some mature
- 21:32Speaker 1: bucks on their feet and doing what they're supposed to
- 21:34Speaker 1: be doing. All right, hunted, Well, good luck to you
- 21:36Speaker 1: and the guys in camp. Thanks for joining me. Thank
- 21:38Speaker 1: you Spencer alright and joining us on the line. Next
- 21:41Speaker 1: is Trent Siegel and Kansas from Heartland Bowl Hunter. Trent
- 21:45Speaker 1: in Kansas, what would you say the bucket activity has
- 21:47Speaker 1: been lately on a scale of one to ten, I'd
- 21:50Speaker 1: say it's been really good, probably like UM an eight
- 21:53Speaker 1: or nine. As far as daylight and what are you
- 21:57Speaker 1: basing that off of your trail cameras or some sightings
- 22:00Speaker 1: that you've had while hunting lately, Both trail cameras have
- 22:05Speaker 1: have definitely had a decent amount of daylight activity and
- 22:09Speaker 1: then hunting and seen some good bucks. And then another
- 22:13Speaker 1: indicator that we all kind of see nowadays is um
- 22:17Speaker 1: just a number of bucks that are dropping um around
- 22:21Speaker 1: our hometowns on on social media. So a lot of
- 22:25Speaker 1: the great planes lately has been dealing with excess precipitation
- 22:30Speaker 1: that's kind of delayed harvest. Are you saying that in Kansas?
- 22:32Speaker 1: And what are maybe some of the repercussions from that
- 22:35Speaker 1: with that late harvest? So the biggest thing that I've
- 22:40Speaker 1: noticed is, Yeah, most all of our crops are still in.
- 22:42Speaker 1: We got it like record rainfalls earlier this month and
- 22:48Speaker 1: fields are still muddy, crops are still standing. And and
- 22:52Speaker 1: just what I've noticed is, UM, it's been a delay
- 22:56Speaker 1: in getting bucks on camera on properties that UM show
- 23:02Speaker 1: have shown up by now, I guess in years past
- 23:05Speaker 1: UM and ones that I know made it through season
- 23:07Speaker 1: last year I haven't had on camera yet UM. And
- 23:11Speaker 1: I I think it's just because the crops aren't out.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Is So what phase of it rout would you say
- 23:16Speaker 1: we're in right now? Pre rod seeking and chasing? What
- 23:19Speaker 1: do you think is going on in Kansas? I honestly
- 23:22Speaker 1: think UM definitely seeking chasing, and I think there's those
- 23:26Speaker 1: that are getting read right now. UM. I've noticed last
- 23:31Speaker 1: week there is a lot of good daylight activity and
- 23:35Speaker 1: mature bucks UM. And then now it seems like it's
- 23:38Speaker 1: it's very sporadic and I'm seeing a lot of fonds
- 23:41Speaker 1: on cameras and then out hunting too that are by themselves.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Um So, I mean, I think their moms are are
- 23:48Speaker 1: locked up with some bucks and it's going to be
- 23:51Speaker 1: that stage where we're just trying to catch those big
- 23:54Speaker 1: mature books in between those. Now with it looking like
- 23:58Speaker 1: the ruddy is maybe going a little bit sooner, what
- 24:00Speaker 1: would you attribute that too? You know, I deer hunting
- 24:05Speaker 1: is a funny I don't know, just a funny game
- 24:08Speaker 1: we play. I never used to believe the moon had
- 24:11Speaker 1: anything to do with it, but um, this year was
- 24:16Speaker 1: one of the earliest harvest moons or second full moon
- 24:19Speaker 1: after the um the fall equinox, and I think, I
- 24:23Speaker 1: mean that's the only thing that I can attribute differently
- 24:26Speaker 1: this year. And then obviously the rainfall and stuff that. Um,
- 24:30Speaker 1: I do think the moon maybe has something to do
- 24:32Speaker 1: with it this year that it's kind of it's definitely
- 24:35Speaker 1: an early rut. Um, they're a big deer dropping like crazy. Um,
- 24:40Speaker 1: just in the last week and a half. What strategies
- 24:43Speaker 1: are you using right now with calling when you do
- 24:45Speaker 1: some blind rattling and said had success for you in
- 24:48Speaker 1: the past in late October? Yeah, absolutely, Um, it's it's
- 24:54Speaker 1: definitely the time to be doing some grunting and rattling. Um,
- 24:59Speaker 1: I'm trying, and it about every sit Um I did
- 25:02Speaker 1: see two bucks, um weren't actually the best buck fight
- 25:07Speaker 1: I've ever seen in person. Um a week ago this
- 25:11Speaker 1: past Sunday, So just like eight nine days ago. Um,
- 25:15Speaker 1: it was just two nice like two year old just
- 25:18Speaker 1: I mean fighting until they were trying to kill each
- 25:21Speaker 1: other basically. I mean it was an awesome light. So
- 25:23Speaker 1: it's it's definitely time to be hitting their horns together
- 25:27Speaker 1: and and doing some callings with some more extreme running
- 25:31Speaker 1: activ that you've seen. Do you think, uh, signmaking is
- 25:34Speaker 1: no longer relevant? Are you still seeing a lot of
- 25:36Speaker 1: fresh sign in the woods? I think it's still relevant.
- 25:40Speaker 1: And I'm still getting a lot of um nice box
- 25:43Speaker 1: on scrapes. Um still hit the mock scrapes. You know,
- 25:48Speaker 1: I've never tried until this year that putting the scrape
- 25:51Speaker 1: trees out in front of some stands and some food
- 25:53Speaker 1: plots and hunted over one of those the other night
- 25:55Speaker 1: and and had a lot of good luck, and pretty
- 25:58Speaker 1: much every dyear coming in the plot came right to
- 26:00Speaker 1: that scrape tree. Even the doughes, we're going over to it.
- 26:03Speaker 1: And and kind of sent checking in and stuff. So, um,
- 26:07Speaker 1: there's that they're definitely doing that. It's one of their
- 26:10Speaker 1: main ways of communication. I feel like, um, in a
- 26:15Speaker 1: great way to get some most recent information. As some
- 26:18Speaker 1: of the guys like to say, get their cameras on
- 26:20Speaker 1: there going forward. Then this s next week or so
- 26:22Speaker 1: what do you think that bucket ATV is going to
- 26:24Speaker 1: be on a scale of one to ten in Kansas,
- 26:28Speaker 1: I gotta say it's it's only gonna get you know,
- 26:31Speaker 1: stay just as good or get better. M It's it's
- 26:34Speaker 1: supposed to get colder. Um, the moon is going to
- 26:38Speaker 1: be a little less full, which I always think it's
- 26:41Speaker 1: easier to hunt. And you know with the the month
- 26:46Speaker 1: turns or the calendar turns to November, so it's it's
- 26:48Speaker 1: gonna be that magical time. So um, that time we
- 26:52Speaker 1: all dream of all year long. So it's it's gonna
- 26:55Speaker 1: be rocking channel hit history is any indicator you're gonna
- 26:59Speaker 1: have a big sucked down with your bow here pretty soon,
- 27:01Speaker 1: So good luck and next for joining me, thanks a lot, man,
- 27:05Speaker 1: same to you to have a good dress your fall
- 27:08Speaker 1: alright and joining us on the line. Next is Brian Grossman,
- 27:11Speaker 1: from Georgia, Field in Georgia, now Brian and Georgia. What
- 27:14Speaker 1: would you say the bucket activity has been lately on
- 27:16Speaker 1: a scale of one to ten, I would say, on
- 27:20Speaker 1: on a scale one to ten, I would I'd say
- 27:22Speaker 1: a six. Right now, Um, we're really starting to see
- 27:26Speaker 1: a lot of new scrapes pop up. Um, starting to
- 27:32Speaker 1: get some reports of you know, seeing some some young
- 27:35Speaker 1: deer chasing, uh that kind of activity. More dear, I
- 27:39Speaker 1: put out a mock scrape here behind my house a
- 27:44Speaker 1: few days ago, and uh seeing a lot of different
- 27:47Speaker 1: bucks showing up checking that out. And actually, I guess
- 27:50Speaker 1: the last night I caught a ten second video clip
- 27:54Speaker 1: of a little buck chasing a dough. He chased your
- 27:57Speaker 1: past the camera twice in a ten second time frame,
- 28:00Speaker 1: so he was he was definitely uh going after But um,
- 28:05Speaker 1: you know, no no reports yet of really any mature
- 28:09Speaker 1: bucks chasing or you know, any serious red sign yet.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Would you say a six out of ten is normal
- 28:16Speaker 1: for late October in Georgia? Yeah, yeah, I mean I
- 28:20Speaker 1: think some things seem to be progressing about like you
- 28:23Speaker 1: would expect this time of year. He says, this is
- 28:26Speaker 1: about the time you kind of see a peak and
- 28:30Speaker 1: scrape activity and uh you know, rubs and and start
- 28:35Speaker 1: seeing those younger bucks, you know, showing the first interest
- 28:39Speaker 1: of kind of chasing after some doves. What are some
- 28:42Speaker 1: of the food sources to focus on right now in Georgia? Uh,
- 28:47Speaker 1: still heavily on white okay corns this time of year,
- 28:51Speaker 1: and of course you know some red okay corns too.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Of course we're you know in uh agricultural areas are
- 28:59Speaker 1: still be you know, hanging out in agricultural fields, green fields,
- 29:03Speaker 1: and that's that's pretty much acorns right now. As we
- 29:09Speaker 1: get into the best hunting of the season these next
- 29:11Speaker 1: couple of weeks, as bucks start to run more, is
- 29:14Speaker 1: that the same food source that you'll focus on all
- 29:16Speaker 1: the way through then or will that change as far
- 29:18Speaker 1: as food somewhurce especially and that I'm not you know,
- 29:22Speaker 1: really in an agricultural area here of Georgia. UM, so yeah,
- 29:26Speaker 1: it'll it'll still you know, rely heavily on on white oaks. Um.
- 29:32Speaker 1: But you know, I'm trying to uh take a note
- 29:37Speaker 1: from the these uh the public layer that just the
- 29:41Speaker 1: uh dining public guys, and trying a little more getting
- 29:45Speaker 1: in closer to betting areas and and uh seeing a
- 29:49Speaker 1: suttle work a little better than the house in the past.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Have you been seeing any new bucks show up on
- 29:54Speaker 1: trail camera? It's kind of that time of the season
- 29:57Speaker 1: where you might start to see some deer that you
- 29:59Speaker 1: have seen some the summer, or maybe never seen it
- 30:01Speaker 1: at all. Yeah, I am, um, I'm running a couple
- 30:06Speaker 1: of trail cameras on a small nineteen akers here behind
- 30:09Speaker 1: my house and just seeing really for the size of
- 30:13Speaker 1: the property to seeing an incredible number of bucks starting
- 30:16Speaker 1: to show up here in the last two weeks. Um,
- 30:19Speaker 1: nothing only only one, you know, really noteworthy, but just
- 30:22Speaker 1: a lot of different bucks, young bucks. Going forward, then
- 30:27Speaker 1: in the six week or so, what do you think
- 30:28Speaker 1: that buck activity will be on a scale of one
- 30:30Speaker 1: to ten in Georgia? Hopefully here in the next week.
- 30:34Speaker 1: I mean that it should only get better, so maybe
- 30:38Speaker 1: you know an eight. Um. Right now, we've we've hit
- 30:43Speaker 1: a little warm snap. It's been those mid seventies today,
- 30:47Speaker 1: it's supposed to be eighty tomorrow. So you know that
- 30:51Speaker 1: that does seem just from my what I've seen, Uh,
- 30:55Speaker 1: it seems to have suppressed some of the daytime you know,
- 30:58Speaker 1: buck moving or daytime dear move um certainly isn't gonna
- 31:02Speaker 1: you know, affect the timing of the rut, but it
- 31:05Speaker 1: can't affect daytime activity. Um, and it seems to have
- 31:09Speaker 1: done that, but it is supposed to. We got a
- 31:13Speaker 1: co front coming on Thursday. It's gonna dump a bunch
- 31:15Speaker 1: of rain and then our temperatures are gonna be back
- 31:18Speaker 1: down to you know, more in line with what they
- 31:20Speaker 1: should be this time of year. So hopefully, you know,
- 31:23Speaker 1: with with that cooler weather and just the normal timing
- 31:28Speaker 1: of the rut here where I am at, thanks should
- 31:31Speaker 1: start getting good. All right, Brian will thanks for joining me,
- 31:34Speaker 1: and good luck this season. Sorry, thank you, Spencer, And
- 31:39Speaker 1: that concludes this week's episode of Wired Haunts Radio. Thanks
- 31:43Speaker 1: to Hayden Hunter, Trent and Brian for joining me, and
- 31:46Speaker 1: thank you guys for listening. As always, make sure you're
