- 0:20Speaker 1: What's going on? Everyone?
- 0:22Speaker 2: Emily a body here. You are listening to five Minute
- 0:25Speaker 2: Friday from Hurdle. I'm laughing. I wish you could see
- 0:29Speaker 2: me right now. I am literally recording this under a
- 0:32Speaker 2: comforter in a hotel room in Jamaica.
- 0:38Speaker 1: The room doesn't have kurpet and it's super echoey. And
- 0:41Speaker 1: if I didn't do this like this, then you would
- 0:45Speaker 1: definitely know. So here I am the things we do
- 0:48Speaker 1: for podcasting. I am having one of those moments, you know,
- 0:52Speaker 1: that trend that we're seeing right now on social media,
- 0:56Speaker 1: whether it be via Instagram or TikTok, And it's like
- 0:58Speaker 1: the butterfly effect is because if this didn't happen, then
- 1:02Speaker 1: this wouldn't have happened, and this wouldn't have happened in
- 1:04Speaker 1: XYZ and I cannot help but think about my career
- 1:09Speaker 1: that way. This week, I now have a podcast that
- 1:14Speaker 1: enables me to travel around the world and interview I'm like,
- 1:21Speaker 1: this is crazy, interview women that I admire within the
- 1:25Speaker 1: realm of sport, working on my mission to empower women
- 1:32Speaker 1: everywhere to live healthier, happier, more motivated lives. And I
- 1:35Speaker 1: would not be doing this if health and wellness didn't
- 1:40Speaker 1: become a priority for me back in college, and if
- 1:43Speaker 1: I go back even before that, I was overweight and
- 1:48Speaker 1: uncomfortable as a pre teen, and I didn't make the
- 1:53Speaker 1: volleyball team my sophomore year after loving playing volleyball because
- 1:58Speaker 1: I couldn't run a mile and under ten minutes, and
- 2:00Speaker 1: I went through so much trauma and boy saying negative
- 2:04Speaker 1: things about me. And finally, one day, as a freshman
- 2:08Speaker 1: in college, I got on a scale and saw a
- 2:11Speaker 1: number that frightened me and sprinted down the road because
- 2:13Speaker 1: I didn't know what else to do. That was so
- 2:15Speaker 1: counterintuitive to me, and I fell in the grass and
- 2:18Speaker 1: I looked up at the sky and said, I can't
- 2:20Speaker 1: live my life like this. And if none of those
- 2:23Speaker 1: other things had happened, then maybe I wouldn't have gotten
- 2:27Speaker 1: to that breaking point. And if that breaking point didn't happen,
- 2:30Speaker 1: then maybe I wouldn't have started to invest in my
- 2:33Speaker 1: own personal health and well being, and I wouldn't have
- 2:36Speaker 1: lost weight, and that journey wouldn't have brought me to running,
- 2:39Speaker 1: and running wouldn't have brought me to this place in
- 2:41Speaker 1: my career where I wanted to dial in on being
- 2:45Speaker 1: a journalist. That focused on fitness, that focused on female athletes,
- 2:50Speaker 1: that got the job as a fitness editor at Self magazine,
- 2:55Speaker 1: And if the magazine didn't fold, then I wouldn't have
- 2:57Speaker 1: ended up wanting to start something of my own and
- 3:00Speaker 1: being here and talking to you on this podcast, arguably
- 3:04Speaker 1: sitting in Jamaica. It's wild and I cannot help but
- 3:10Speaker 1: think about so many times that it felt unfair, so
- 3:14Speaker 1: many times that it's felt so so difficult. But if
- 3:18Speaker 1: there's anything that has been a resounding message for me
- 3:23Speaker 1: over the last seven and a half years creating content
- 3:26Speaker 1: on Hurdle, it's that these difficult hurdle moments happen to
- 3:30Speaker 1: teach us something. And these strong individuals, the smartest of
- 3:35Speaker 1: all of us, and I'm talking to you, what we
- 3:38Speaker 1: do is we take these difficult moments and we learn
- 3:40Speaker 1: from them. We use them as an opportunity to inform
- 3:45Speaker 1: our next step.
- 3:47Speaker 2: And don't get me wrong, I am informed. The challenges
- 3:52Speaker 2: are still coming and they will for the rest of
- 3:55Speaker 2: my days. But I can say without a hesitant of
- 4:00Speaker 2: a doubt is that the phrase I can say that
- 4:02Speaker 2: without a doubt you understand what I'm saying. I know
- 4:08Speaker 2: I am exactly where I'm supposed to be right now.
- 4:10Speaker 2: As corny as that sounds, I am doing exactly what
- 4:13Speaker 2: I am supposed to be doing. I feel it in
- 4:16Speaker 2: my gut, I feel it in my soul, and I
- 4:17Speaker 2: am so excited about what happens next. I get this way.
- 4:23Speaker 2: My birthday's next week, and whenever I'm on the cusp
- 4:26Speaker 2: of another lap around the sun, I'm extremely reflective, and
- 4:30Speaker 2: I am in this place where it could be simple
- 4:35Speaker 2: to focus on what I am without, I'm choosing to
- 4:38Speaker 2: focus on what I am with and all of the
- 4:41Speaker 2: goodness in my life, and how far I have come,
- 4:43Speaker 2: and how proud I am of the woman that's sitting
- 4:45Speaker 2: here under this comforter talking to you about all of it.
- 4:50Speaker 2: It's good, It's really damn good. The butterfly effect, it's crazy,
- 4:55Speaker 2: it's crazy. My question for you right now, my listener
- 4:58Speaker 2: prompt you this week, what is one one thing, one
- 5:01Speaker 2: hurdle moment that you've experienced that in the moment was,
- 5:05Speaker 2: oh my goodness, so challenging, but now you look back
- 5:09Speaker 2: on with a certain fondness. What is one hurdle moment
- 5:13Speaker 2: you've experienced that was difficult in the moment, but has
- 5:16Speaker 2: helped you step into who you are today. And now
- 5:21Speaker 2: a listener question. Hi, Emily, I've been listening since twenty seventeen.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Three exclamation points. My question for you is, how do
- 5:28Speaker 2: you know if a decision is right? For example, interviewing
- 5:32Speaker 2: for new jobs or opportunities. I tend to get hesitant
- 5:34Speaker 2: because I can be a bit too comfortable where I'm
- 5:36Speaker 2: at right now or scared of change. But question is,
- 5:40Speaker 2: how do you determine when your gut instinct is telling
- 5:42Speaker 2: you the right thing? How do you know if any
- 5:46Speaker 2: decision is right? Any advice would be so much appreciated.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Heart emoji, thank you. Eighteen exclamation points. Taylor, Oh, Taylor,
- 5:55Speaker 2: I have been here and I think as you can see.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Are you heard anyway in the beginning of this episode,
- 6:03Speaker 2: there are gonna be a lot of twists and turns
- 6:05Speaker 2: in life, and you might not always have all of
- 6:07Speaker 2: the answers. But I trust in your intuition. I trust
- 6:12Speaker 2: in my intuition, and no matter what happens, even if
- 6:17Speaker 2: maybe it's quote unquote not the right decision, it is
- 6:21Speaker 2: a decision that will get you wherever it is that
- 6:23Speaker 2: you are supposed to go. I know that's hard to hear.
- 6:27Speaker 2: When things feel as though they're not going your way,
- 6:30Speaker 2: I know that you want someone to be like, this
- 6:34Speaker 2: is going to lead you exactly to the path that
- 6:36Speaker 2: you've thought that you were supposed to go on for
- 6:38Speaker 2: all of your years. But the truth is is that
- 6:42Speaker 2: there is no roadmap, and that's part of the fun.
- 6:45Speaker 2: How do you trust your gut? It's a good question.
- 6:49Speaker 2: You feel it like I feel my intuition deep in
- 6:52Speaker 2: my chest, and whenever I do something where I'm like
- 6:57Speaker 2: second guessing myself, and it happens a lot, I trust
- 7:02Speaker 2: that making a decision will give me clarity. And when
- 7:09Speaker 2: clarity occurs, it might not give you the answers that
- 7:12Speaker 2: you want, but it gives you the answers that you
- 7:14Speaker 2: need so that you can make an informed decision going forward.
- 7:19Speaker 2: And so interviewing for new jobs or opportunities, Yes, overwhelming,
- 7:24Speaker 2: totally understandable. But trust me when I say that you
- 7:31Speaker 2: have all of the tools you need inside of you
- 7:34Speaker 2: to move forward. I'll say that again, you have all
- 7:37Speaker 2: of the tools inside of you to move forward. So
- 7:41Speaker 2: what if it's not quote unquote the right decision. Who
- 7:44Speaker 2: gets to decide what's the right decision except you? You
- 7:47Speaker 2: know so trusting your gut is following your intuition. I
- 7:53Speaker 2: feel it in my chest, and I trust that whatever
- 7:57Speaker 2: is meant for me and won't pass me by. And
- 8:01Speaker 2: even in the moments where it feels like that's exactly
- 8:03Speaker 2: what's happening, that redirection is a blessing, it's information, it's
- 8:10Speaker 2: an opportunity, but you have to choose to see it
- 8:14Speaker 2: that way. I hope this helps you all know how
- 8:17Speaker 2: to find me if you've got a listener question of
- 8:19Speaker 2: your own. I'm over at Emily Avadi at Hurdle Podcast.
- 8:22Speaker 2: It's time for me to get out from under this
- 8:24Speaker 2: comforter and head to the airport. Another hurdle conquered. Catch
- 8:30Speaker 2: you guys next time.
