Transcript
- 0:02We want to encourage everyone to come in and get a seat.
- 0:10I'm not the one that's going to say Rob is long-winded, but if we don't start, he won't end.
- 0:19We are glad that everyone is out this evening.
- 0:23We appreciate your presence and I know we've got a few people who aren't able to be here and are watching online and we appreciate their presence as well.
- 0:32ah Just for the sake of time, because I know Rob has a lot to cover, we're going to forego what we would normally do in a gospel meeting as far as a song and a prayer and
- 0:43everything, because this is a training session.
- 0:45This is what this is intended to be.
- 0:47ah And so I do appreciate
- 0:49and want to reiterate how much I appreciate Rob and Nicole and Hannah coming and being here to help us, to educate us, to train us.
- 0:59uh Hopefully you've got your back to the Bibles with you, you've got your booklet with you from last night.
- 1:05If you do need an extra copy, pick one up on the table if you manage to get here without it.
- 1:11But I'm going to turn it over to Rob and let him get started.
- 1:27Good evening.
- 1:29Grateful for your presence tonight.
- 1:31I know that a midweek of
- 1:33The session is challenging, especially with Memphis traffic.
- 1:37Getting here at 6.30, but we're grateful you've made the trip tonight.
- 1:40Have some students from the Memphis School of Preaching.
- 1:42We'll be at the Memphis School of Preaching in the middle of March.
- 1:45We'll also be at the Arlington Church of Christ.
- 1:48Brother, uh I believe Tibbets is located there, and uh we'll be doing some training together.
- 1:54uh Brother Clark asked us to come every two years and do the training at Memphis.
- 1:58We're grateful for that availability.
- 2:01uh So we want to get started.
- 2:03immediately this evening.
- 2:05If you are visiting tonight and you have not.
- 2:09use the QR code or sign the clipboard.
- 2:11Please do that.
- 2:12This is how we send you free evangelism material.
- 2:15So we're gonna fill your inbox with tools.
- 2:18We're gonna send something called Reaching the Lost.
- 2:20If you're not receiving that, use that QR code or just sign the clipboard on the back table and we'll be glad to provide you that information on a weekly basis.
- 2:28So these are direct reports from churches.
- 2:31If it works, you're gonna see it.
- 2:33It's their words.
- 2:33If it doesn't work, you're gonna hear it.
- 2:35It's their words.
- 2:36So we just give you these reports.
- 2:39up every week, you're going to get about 75 congregations a week that are reporting and they're just telling you how things are progressing.
- 2:46And so it's not mandatory, but we ask churches to participate because it helps to edify the local body and we learn from the test results or the work you're doing at the local
- 2:57area.
- 2:58We have a YouTube channel if you've not already subscribed to it.
- 3:01It's called House to House School of Evangelism.
- 3:04If you have your YouTube app, open it up now because you're going to forget and just subscribe.
- 3:08There are 170 videos.
- 3:10These videos range from one minute TikTok link to five minutes.
- 3:14That's about the American culture link.
- 3:16And they're all training videos and all those are for your learning.
- 3:21We want to start this evening by introducing a tool.
- 3:25So a fisherman isn't very good without a fishing pole.
- 3:28A carpenter is not very good without a hammer.
- 3:31not have a tackle box, you're not gonna be very good at your trade.
- 3:35So we need to equip our members.
- 3:37We need to equip the church.
- 3:39And the fact is that most church members have no method.
- 3:41They have no tools.
- 3:43And so if they were going to have a Bible study, they don't even know where they would begin.
- 3:47And what we wanna do is answer that question.
- 3:51What do I use?
- 3:53When I approach a family member, is there something simple that you can put in my hand that I could use to have a Bible study?
- 4:01oh
- 4:01your hands tonight is back to the Bible.
- 4:04in the Evangelism Simplified Guidebook.
- 4:07Now, in 2016, let's go ahead and just set the stage.
- 4:11Christian University, and I have their other studies, I have all the analytics, but they published a survey, a poll, and what they wanted to do was find out where we're going and
- 4:24what do the numbers look like for a projection.
- 4:27And I revealed on Sunday, they found out that two-thirds
- 4:31of our church members are over the age of 50.
- 4:34And they pulled 9,500 Christians.
- 4:36That's a pretty good sample size.
- 4:37These are just in the Church of Christ.
- 4:39They found out that 13 % of our church members are under the age of 30, meaning we're a great headed church.
- 4:45Now, then they ran their projections to find out, what does it mean?
- 4:48They looked at the past rate of loss, the current rate of loss, and they began to make their projections.
- 4:53Here's what it means.
- 4:55In the year 2016, when they did the study, we had 12,200 churches of Christ.
- 5:00That's about where we
- 5:01were and that's the directory.
- 5:05have a Churches of Christ directory.
- 5:07It's gonna get most Churches of Christ.
- 5:10This is where we were in 2016.
- 5:12Using those same metrics, in 2019, they said it's gonna drop down to about 11,500 Churches of Christ.
- 5:20They were spot on.
- 5:22That's exactly what happened.
- 5:24They said, OK, if the direction keeps going, where are we going to be by 2022?
- 5:28We're going to just have over 10,000 churches of Christ.
- 5:31That's exactly where we are today.
- 5:33So they hit their numbers every time they made a projection.
- 5:36All they did is take the current rate of loss, they took the past rate of loss, they took the demographic, and they ran the numbers.
- 5:42Where are we going?
- 5:43What will we look like?
- 5:45So here's what they did.
- 5:46Let's pop it forward 25 years.
- 5:4825 years from now, 2049, we'll have 3,000 churches left.
- 5:54All right, let's go ahead and advance the slide.
- 5:57What is that going to do to membership?
- 5:59So what will our membership look like?
- 6:01right, you're 2016, about 1.2 million members of the Lord's Church.
- 6:06All right, that's where we were according to their data.
- 6:08All where will we be in 2022?
- 6:11We're gonna be down to about a million members left.
- 6:14Here's where it gets frightening.
- 6:16They were spot on.
- 6:18That's exactly where we were in 2022.
- 6:20We don't even have a million members now.
- 6:23So the numbers follow the chart.
- 6:26Now where will we be in 2049?
- 6:28They said we project you have about 275,000 members left.
- 6:34Well if those numbers don't stir your spirit tonight, if they don't cause you to come out of your pews and realize that we must focus on evangelism like never before, you're
- 6:43already half dead.
- 6:45because this is a reality that's setting in every single year.
- 6:49Now, here's the good news.
- 6:50The good news is that these are just projections, and a projection is only as accurate as the variables that are placed into it.
- 6:59So if a variable changes, the entire projection changes.
- 7:02So if we can take one of those variables that are being used and affect the number, and that's what we're trying to do in evangelism, is we're trying to affect the variables and
- 7:12say, listen, we're not gonna sit in our pew,
- 7:15and watch the Church of Christ disintegrate, we're going to get busy.
- 7:18We're going to get out of our pews, we're going to create contacts, we're going to prospect the contacts, and we're going to have Bible studies, so this never comes true.
- 7:26You're on a time clock.
- 7:302049.
- 7:32If we don't change those numbers, this is exactly what's gonna happen.
- 7:36I want you to take your back to the Bibles because we're gonna spend some time looking at these together.
- 7:41And you have your evangelism simplified guidebook.
- 7:44All right, Matthew 28 verse 19, what does the Bible say?
- 7:47Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
- 7:55This is called the Great Commission, but it is great because Jesus spoke it.
- 7:59It's not great because preachers preach it.
- 8:02It's great because Jesus spoke it.
- 8:04It could be more accurately called the New Testament Commission.
- 8:07The reason it's great is there's only one.
- 8:10You can read from Matthew to Revelation, you'll find only one great commission.
- 8:14It's stated in Matthew 28, 18 through 20.
- 8:17It's stated in Mark 16, 15 and 16.
- 8:20It's stated in Luke 24, 47 through 49.
- 8:24It's stated in John 20, 21 through 23.
- 8:27In every gospel account, Jesus states it.
- 8:29It's then stated again in Acts 1.
- 8:32verse eight, then it's demonstrated throughout every New Testament epistle, so we find that the Great Commission is the core of who we are.
- 8:40It's our purpose.
- 8:41Our purpose is to make known to the world the manifold wisdom of God, Ephesians 3, 20 and 21.
- 8:47That Great Commission has some characteristics to it that are inherent in the very grammar itself.
- 8:53Let's look at one of them.
- 8:54It says, ye.
- 8:56That term, ye, is plural.
- 8:59It's not singular.
- 9:01He does not mean just go me, but the go ye means go all.
- 9:06Everyone's gotta go.
- 9:08We are an army of soul winners.
- 9:09We can't pin this on the back of Aaron.
- 9:11We can't pin this on the back of the Memphis School of Preaching.
- 9:14We can't pin this on the back of oh a missionary to do the work for us.
- 9:21If this doesn't become the culture of our churches, the Great Commission fails.
- 9:26It will not function.
- 9:27Go ye therefore and teach.
- 9:30It's a teaching commission.
- 9:31We've got to teach.
- 9:33If we're not teaching, then we're failing.
- 9:35So the Great Commission is a teaching commission.
- 9:38Now notice what happens when you teach.
- 9:39You baptize.
- 9:40So show me a church that's having baptisms.
- 9:43I'll show you a church that's teaching.
- 9:45If their church is not having baptisms, then I would suggest your church probably has no Bible studies.
- 9:50And someone says, Rob, we're struggling.
- 9:52We don't have baptisms.
- 9:53My question is, how many Bible studies are going on right now in your church?
- 9:57We've got five.
- 9:58Well, tell me about those five.
- 9:59Well, all five are studies with your memory.
- 10:03We want to know how many you're doing with the non-members, how many in the community, how many friends, family, coworkers, ball team members, people that you grew up with, how many
- 10:12of those studies are going on?
- 10:14So I did not draw the correlation, I just connected the dots.
- 10:18When Jesus said, ye therefore teach and baptize, he's giving us the recipe for baptisms.
- 10:23Baptisms are the result of teaching.
- 10:26And so we must teach people the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 10:29So what's happened?
- 10:31So do we believe in the Great Commission and the Church of Christ?
- 10:34Yes or no?
- 10:35Of course.
- 10:36Because we send thousands upon thousands of dollars to these countries.
- 10:41Tens of thousands, hundreds, millions of dollars are flowing into India.
- 10:46I know that.
- 10:49Millions of dollars are being flown into South Africa and South America.
- 10:52I know that.
- 10:54We believe in the Great Commission because we're willing to send teams of missionaries, yes to missions, campaigns.
- 11:01We're willing to go all over the world.
- 11:04But, brethren, I want to propose tonight that the Great Commission in South America has become the great omission in the United States of America because we don't do it.
- 11:15We don't do it here.
- 11:16We don't do it because our members don't believe it works.
- 11:19They've never been a part of it.
- 11:21There's no plan.
- 11:22We don't have any organization.
- 11:24There's no strategy.
- 11:25There's no tools.
- 11:26There's no equipment.
- 11:27And so our members find it easier to get on an airplane, take the shots, get your visas, go halfway around the world, live in difficult environments, but at least you got the
- 11:39baptisms.
- 11:40And those missionaries come back.
- 11:41They give us the reports.
- 11:43They show us the baptisms.
- 11:45we've accomplished success.
- 11:48One elder told me at polishing the pulpit, he said, preacher, he said, I'll tell you why we send our money to India, because it's easier.
- 11:56It's easier to write the check.
- 11:58What you're asking us to do is hard.
- 12:00What you're asking us to do is, oh it's just easier for us to send it to Tanzania.
- 12:06Brethren, I'm not opposed to supporting Tanzania.
- 12:08I'm not opposed to supporting Mexico.
- 12:11But I am all for supporting Collierville.
- 12:14Because if there's no evangelism in Calderville, you won't be able to support Tanzania.
- 12:20In fact, one day, India will have to send their missionaries to Calderville because we're not here.
- 12:25And so this is important.
- 12:27This is vital to understand that the Great Commission starts with your next door neighbor.
- 12:36It don't start in Tanzania.
- 12:38It don't start halfway around the world.
- 12:41It starts with the guy you work with.
- 12:44It starts with your family.
- 12:47It starts with your friends.
- 12:50It starts with the very people that you are around every day.
- 12:53And so we've got to learn how to apply this to the people that we know.
- 13:01So I'm preparing for my Bible class one Sunday morning and uh this couple walks through the doors and uh I didn't know them.
- 13:08I em identified them, my wife and I walked up and I said, my name's Rob, this is my wife Nicole.
- 13:14said, I'm Jonathan Royals, m my wife Stephanie.
- 13:17I said, well, we're glad you're here.
- 13:18I said, you guys new to the area?
- 13:20He says, we are.
- 13:22I said, well, did someone here invite you?
- 13:24said, you did.
- 13:26and I've never seen him in my life.
- 13:28And he said, well, someone in this church did, and he brought out a copy of House to House, Heart to Heart, because as a church, we're sending out that publication every
- 13:36single month, and we're inviting people to church.
- 13:39And he tells me how that he got up this morning, he decided his family needed to go to church, he saw that House to House, Heart to Heart, he says, why don't we go there?
- 13:48And that's why he's sitting in the church building.
- 13:51I said, I'm glad you're here.
- 13:53After the services I walked up, I'm excited because all I could think about was step three.
- 13:56That's all I could think about, Bible study.
- 13:59I've got a Bible study sitting in the pews and I could not wait to get to them.
- 14:03And as soon as services were over, my wife and I walked up and said, hey, Jonathan, said, my wife is the best cook in Macon County.
- 14:10And my daughter's the best dessert maker you'll ever see.
- 14:13I said, why don't you guys come over to the house?
- 14:15She's got enough food fixed and we'll get to know each other.
- 14:18I said, what do you think?
- 14:19He looked at me, raised his little finger and said, I don't know you and I don't want to go to your house.
- 14:24That was a completely unexpected answer.
- 14:26Like I never thought that answer would be given, but we do live in the United States of America.
- 14:34And we're a very unique culture.
- 14:38And every culture around the world
- 14:41If you showed up as a visitor, they take you to their home.
- 14:45I'm telling you, that's what they do.
- 14:47And I've been to these different nations.
- 14:49And they'll give you their house.
- 14:50They'll give you their bedroom.
- 14:52They'll give you everything they have.
- 14:54That's the culture, not here.
- 14:56So when you meet people for the first time, and they invite you to their home, you're not going because you think they're a serial killer.
- 15:04We don't do that in America.
- 15:07In America, if you're going to meet someone for the first time, the first thing you do is invite them out to eat.
- 15:12Very neutral environment.
- 15:13I failed to do that.
- 15:14I skipped that step.
- 15:16I went right to the, let's come to my house.
- 15:18And so, so Jonathan looked at, I looked at Jonathan.
- 15:21I said, well Jonathan, I'm sorry, I was so forward.
- 15:23I just, you know, I said, what do you want to do?
- 15:25I said, I'd like to get with you.
- 15:26He said, huh.
- 15:27He said, Tuesday I'm free.
- 15:28Why don't you come to my house?
- 15:30Now he's the serial killer now.
- 15:31That's exactly what's going on here.
- 15:33So I said, I said, okay, you know, I said, I'm coming.
- 15:36And my wife said,
- 15:37you sure about this?
- 15:38You know we don't know these people." And I said, yes honey, said, I think everything's fine.
- 15:42so sure enough we pull into their driveway, know, my kids get outside and their assignment is to take their four children, they have four, Johnny, uh Julie Ann, Jen, and Jacy, take
- 15:53them outside and play.
- 15:54We're going to do a Bible study.
- 15:56So I walked inside the house, I got my little booklets, and I'm ready to go.
- 16:00And so I'm just about to pull out my booklets, and I said, Jonathan, I said, I guess you guys want to know more about our church?
- 16:06He said, I kind
- 16:07to do?" I said, you know I just so happen to have these little booklets that are called Back to the Bible.
- 16:12And I said, in fact I just brought enough sets for us.
- 16:15And I said, if it's okay with you, I said we'll just open our Bibles and we'll look at it.
- 16:19And he said, well there are a few things I want you to know about me Rob.
- 16:22I said, well what is it?
- 16:23He said, he said we're from Florida.
- 16:28I said, I like Floridians, that's not a problem.
- 16:30I said, no problem.
- 16:31He said, well Rob, he says I was deputy sheriff.
- 16:33I said, I love law enforcement.
- 16:35Not a problem.
- 16:36He said, now Rob, said, I'm religious.
- 16:38I said, I love religious people.
- 16:40This is wonderful.
- 16:41I said, he said, and by the way, he said, we went to this big community church.
- 16:45He says, and my son was saved in that church.
- 16:47He said, praise Jesus.
- 16:50And I said, Jonathan, I said, this is wonderful.
- 16:53I said, I can't think of a better way to start.
- 16:55And I said, is there anything else I need to know?
- 16:57He says, no.
- 16:57He said, oh, by the way, he says that you'll have to prove everything you teach me.
- 17:03I said, I like that.
- 17:05I said, by the way, it's called Back to the Bible.
- 17:07Every answer will come out of the Bible.
- 17:09He said, okay.
- 17:09I said, Jonathan, take your Bible, John 832.
- 17:12So we opened the Bible up, we started reading, and Jonathan reads the text.
- 17:16said, Jonathan, Jesus says the blank will make you free.
- 17:19And I said, what is it, Jonathan?
- 17:20He said, how do you know it's Jesus?
- 17:23And I said, well, the letters are red.
- 17:26And he said, that won't work.
- 17:27He said, how do you know it's Jesus?
- 17:29And I said, because verse 31 says, and Jesus said, will that work?
- 17:33He said, that'll work.
- 17:34And he put the word truth down.
- 17:36And every time we went to a question, he looks at it very carefully and he fills it out.
- 17:42We're walking through the study, halfway through the study, he stops and he says, I got it.
- 17:46He says, every answer comes from the Bible.
- 17:48I said, bingo.
- 17:50And now he's just rolling the answers off his tongue.
- 17:54He's learned that if it doesn't come from the Bible, we don't believe it.
- 17:58And he loves it.
- 17:59We get to do that study.
- 18:00Stephanie says, Jonathan, she said, I don't think we've ever done a Bible study in our life.
- 18:04He said, man, I learned a lot.
- 18:06I said, y'all like it?
- 18:07He said, I said, Jonathan, would it be okay if you came to our house next week?
- 18:10He said, well, yes.
- 18:12I said, my wife is the best cook in Macon County.
- 18:14And I said, you come over, we'll cook a dinner and we'll just have a good time.
- 18:18We'll learn a little bit more about it.
- 18:19He said, that'd be good.
- 18:21So they came over with the second study.
- 18:23Could have gone better.
- 18:24If it's in the Bible, they'll believe it.
- 18:26Stephanie says, Jonathan, I didn't know you're
- 18:28supposed to take the Lord's Seppar on the first day of each week.
- 18:30I never read this verse before.
- 18:32And this is a kind of interaction you have.
- 18:34And it's very rewarding to watch people learn, to see them soak it up and be honest.
- 18:42And you're helping them see the clarity and the simplicity of scripture.
- 18:48So then they come to the third study.
- 18:49We're walking through it.
- 18:52Stephanie, her eyes get glassy.
- 18:56She gets it.
- 18:58Jonathan is real quiet.
- 19:00And she looks at her husband, she says, Jonathan, neither you or I have ever been baptized.
- 19:07And I looked at them, I said, I know how we can fix that.
- 19:10And we took them to the baptistry that very hour, baptized them into Christ, and Jonathan and Stephanie became Christians.
- 19:15That's not why I'm telling you this story.
- 19:19This is why, because I have a son, his name's Johnny.
- 19:22And so as soon as they're coming out of the water, I looked at Jonathan, said, Jonathan, said, Johnny, he don't know, he's lost.
- 19:29I said, why don't we set that Bible, study it with Johnny, he's 15.
- 19:32I said, he needs it.
- 19:33And he looked at me, and I remember, because we're back in the dressing room, he's getting dressed, and I'm waiting on him, and we're talking, and he says, He says, I don't want you
- 19:42studying with my son.
- 19:45And I thought I'd just lost all the progress I've made.
- 19:47That kind of stunned me when he said that.
- 19:49And I said, what do you mean?
- 19:50He said, well, have you got any of those little booklets?
- 19:52I said, let me see if I've got them.
- 19:54Yes, they're called back to the Bible.
- 19:56I said, he just so happened to have three sets.
- 19:58He said, good, because I need them.
- 19:59I said, why would you want them, Jonathan?
- 20:01He says, because we're going to teach our son.
- 20:04I want to know how it is that we've got brand new Christians that know enough to teach people the gospel.
- 20:08But we've got members of the Church of Christ who've been sitting in the pews for decades, for decades, and they don't know enough to have a Bible study.
- 20:16You can learn a lot from new converts.
- 20:18Here's one thing I've learned from new converts.
- 20:21New converts don't know that Bible studies don't work.
- 20:25They don't know that.
- 20:26But our members seem to know that.
- 20:29you know, it just won't work.
- 20:30We've tried this before.
- 20:32Bible studies just don't work today.
- 20:35You're just wasting your time.
- 20:37We know that it works in India, but it won't work in Calgarville.
- 20:42Well, I'm glad they don't know that.
- 20:45It's amazing what happens when you study the Word of God.
- 20:48I remember the day that Jonathan called me.
- 20:50They finished the Bible study.
- 20:52and we baptized Johnny into Christ for the remission of his sins.
- 20:56By the way, he went to the Memphis School of Preaching along with Hatton, and today they're preaching the gospel.
- 21:03It's amazing what happens when you help people, when you teach people.
- 21:06So don't ride off your community.
- 21:09The gospel still has the power to save.
- 21:11We can still reach people, but you need a tool.
- 21:14And I had a tool for Jonathan and Stephanie.
- 21:16I had a tool for Johnny, and I need to give you a tool.
- 21:19So open up those back to the Bibles, everyone, and take some notes.
- 21:22Number one, I like back to the Bible because it's simple, and we need simple things.
- 21:27Brother New Converts are using it.
- 21:28Just three studies, 90 minutes to complete.
- 21:33In most of the time, Nicole and I can do it in about 60 minutes.
- 21:36And so if someone is not proficient in finding Bible passages, you extend it out to about 90 minutes.
- 21:44But it doesn't take you hours and hours and hours.
- 21:49If it's taking you two, three hours to do a study, you're talking too much.
- 21:54Stop talking.
- 21:55We don't need you to over-talk and under-teach.
- 21:58We need you to use the tool.
- 22:00And so one of the rules you'll
- 22:02learn when you're fishing, Is let the fishing pole do the work.
- 22:06Don't fight it.
- 22:08My dad, I remember him teaching me how to swing a hammer.
- 22:11He said, son, your arm's not gonna last about 30 more minutes and you're done.
- 22:15Let the hammer do the work.
- 22:17And so the reason you have tools is because it does the work for you.
- 22:21So your gift of dab is not needed, no disrespect.
- 22:25We don't need you to flash your Greek knowledge.
- 22:28Keep it at Memphis School of Preaching.
- 22:29They don't need your Greek knowledge.
- 22:31They don't need your Hebrew knowledge either.
- 22:33They don't need grammatical constructions compared to passages, historical analysis.
- 22:37They don't need all that.
- 22:38They need you to read the Bible.
- 22:41Period.
- 22:42Let the Bible do the work.
- 22:44We're our own worst enemies when it comes to Bible studies.
- 22:47All right, it's simple.
- 22:48Yes, no, fill in the blank.
- 22:50You're answering questions.
- 22:51All right, number two, I like Back to the Bible because it's scriptural.
- 22:54It's based on the Bible.
- 22:56So anytime we do a Bible study, all right, we need to use the scripture and allow the scripture to be the power of God.
- 23:03Now, the Back to the Bible series was written by Bobby Bates.
- 23:07It's written in the 1970s.
- 23:10Brother Bates used the King James version of the Bible.
- 23:13I grew up on the King James version of the Bible.
- 23:16So when someone walks in my home, like Brittany Massey, and lays her Bible on the table and goes maybe outside or to the bathroom, I'm gonna pick up her Bible.
- 23:25You know why?
- 23:26I wonder what version she's using.
- 23:28So I said, Nicole, hand me Brittany's Bible.
- 23:31the new American Catholic Bible.
- 23:34Honey, how are we going?
- 23:35We can't do a Bible study with the new American Catholic Bible.
- 23:38So I began to formulate my arguments.
- 23:41How am I gonna get her not to use the new American Catholic Bible?
- 23:44And I've got my gift of war Bible over my shoulder.
- 23:46I'm gonna give it to her so we can swap out Bibles.
- 23:49And so I'm trying to figure out how to have this discussion with Brittany about this Bible she's brought.
- 23:53She sits down, thank God I came to myself and realized that I'm about to violate principle number seven.
- 24:01oh
- 24:01Remember what principle number seven is?
- 24:03Anybody remember what it is?
- 24:06Hesitate.
- 24:07Hesitate.
- 24:08Do not climb Mount Versin.
- 24:11Climb Mount Conversion.
- 24:13We do not need to take down Mount Versin now.
- 24:16We'll take Mount Versin later.
- 24:18And so I said, you know, we'll just use the New American Catholic Bible.
- 24:21And we did.
- 24:22You know what happened?
- 24:23She was baptized.
- 24:25After the baptism, she's sitting around the table at our house.
- 24:28doing a new convert study.
- 24:30She says, Rob, have I ever told you the study about my Bible?
- 24:34I said, no, Brittany, you have not.
- 24:36She said, Rob, that's the family Bible.
- 24:38Grandma gave it to me before she passed.
- 24:40What would have happened if I insulted the family Bible?
- 24:43Anybody?
- 24:44There's no Bible study.
- 24:46There's not gonna be a Bible study.
- 24:48And so I'm not gonna teach Melk, she doesn't use it today because we have tackled that together.
- 24:54It's a family heirloom now.
- 24:56So I'm not gonna start with Melk version.
- 25:00I'm gonna...
- 25:01Start with Mount conversion.
- 25:02Now it requires Bible reading.
- 25:04She had to read her Bible because all answers come from the text.
- 25:07Any Bible study that does not require you to read the Bible, run from it.
- 25:12All right?
- 25:13We need people reading the book because Psalm 19, seven says by the words of the Lord, right?
- 25:18By the word of God is conversion.
- 25:20It's God's law that converts people.
- 25:23We don't want them to read some type of track, right?
- 25:26Without reading their Bible.
- 25:27I'm all in favor of tracks, but we want people
- 25:30to open the scripture because this is where the power of conversion is.
- 25:36Every Bible study should require you to read your Bible.
- 25:40I know that some Bible studies like to write down all the scriptures for you.
- 25:44I don't like that at all.
- 25:46You're not teaching them to read a Bible.
- 25:48right, what makes it easier?
- 25:50know, just because it's easier doesn't mean it's better.
- 25:53All right, teach them how to open a Bible.
- 25:55Teach them how to find the book of Matthew.
- 25:57Give them the page number.
- 25:58Don't give them the page number.
- 26:00Let them learn how to find Matthew.
- 26:02Take it from someone who's had hundreds of Bible studies.
- 26:05My wife and I have had hundreds of these.
- 26:07You will be better off if you teach them how to use a Bible.
- 26:10You're gonna be better off if you build their confidence up so they know how to find places in the Bible.
- 26:16Because when they go home, you can't give them the page number.
- 26:20So if you teach them how to find Matthew, they're better off.
- 26:23You know, it's not hard.
- 26:25You know when my wife and I, about halfway through the study, they'll find Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Romans, and Revelation.
- 26:31Halfway through one study.
- 26:32It's amazing how smart the mind is if we just let them learn.
- 26:36All right, so we're gonna require them to read their Bible.
- 26:39We're gonna require them to open their Bible, get the answer from the text, and we're gonna follow the scriptural order.
- 26:45So what's the scriptural order?
- 26:46Well, let's go to Acts chapter eight.
- 26:48Let's go to Acts chapter eight and let's look at verse number four and five.
- 26:52So I'm gonna give you what
- 26:55with Wilma, Bobby's widow, and this is who talked to me about Acts 8 and 4 and 5.
- 27:00It was Wilma Bates, we were at her dinner table, uh and she said, Rob, have I ever taught you about how Bobby wrote back to the Bible?
- 27:09I said, no, but I would love to hear it.
- 27:12Well, Rob, followed the scriptural order.
- 27:14uh Well, I've been preaching for several years.
- 27:20I've never heard of the scriptural order.
- 27:22So I said, well, I want to know more about it.
- 27:24All right, she said, go to Acts 8, and let's look at verses four and five.
- 27:26Therefore, they that were scattered abroad, whenever were preaching the word.
- 27:30All right, she said, now, Rob, watch out.
- 27:33Then Philip, the inspired evangelist, let me be clear tonight.
- 27:38Philip is inspired, I'm not.
- 27:41Philip is inspired, you're not.
- 27:44So whatever Philip does, it's right.
- 27:46Whatever Philip does, it's gotta be better than what you do.
- 27:48So I need to listen to Philip.
- 27:50And whatever Philip does is what I'm going to do.
- 27:52So what did he do?
- 27:53What is his modus operandi?
- 27:56How does he achieve success?
- 27:58Well, Philip opened, notice Philip opened, went down to the city of Samaria, he opens the gospel and he preaches what?
- 28:06Christ.
- 28:07He preaches Christ.
- 28:09So if we wanna evangelize, what should we do, everyone?
- 28:14Preach Christ, well what does that mean?
- 28:16Does that mean preach Jesus in the manger?
- 28:18Does that mean preach Jesus when he was 12 in Jerusalem?
- 28:21Does it mean preach Jesus at the wedding feast in Cana?
- 28:24Does it mean preach Jesus in John 4 at the Samaritan woman?
- 28:27What does that mean?
- 28:28How about Nicodemus, John 3?
- 28:30I mean there's a lot of things that could be incorporated into this.
- 28:35Not if you read your Bible.
- 28:37because he tells you what that means.
- 28:39So I you to go down to verse number 12.
- 28:40Everybody go down to verse 12.
- 28:42But when they believe Philip's preaching, what was he preaching?
- 28:44Christ.
- 28:45What does that mean, brother?
- 28:46Let's just read.
- 28:48All right, verse number 12.
- 28:49When they believe in what's preaching, the things concerning the kingdom of God, the name of Jesus Christ, he baptized them, both men and women.
- 28:58Everybody get out there back to the Bibles.
- 29:00Right here, there's three of them.
- 29:02It's not hard.
- 29:03I everybody to hold them up.
- 29:04All right, there you go.
- 29:06You're not very good at it, just I'll teach you how to do it.
- 29:08It's on the wrist, brother.
- 29:09You got to do that.
- 29:10All right, there you go.
- 29:11All got three of them.
- 29:12Now, everybody, let's hold up the green booklet, everybody.
- 29:15Hold up the green booklet.
- 29:16This is not hard.
- 29:17All right.
- 29:18is the name of Jesus Christ.
- 29:20Okay, this is called Bible authority.
- 29:22It's the name of Jesus Christ.
- 29:23Let's hold up book number two.
- 29:25All hold up book number two.
- 29:27That is the kingdom of God.
- 29:29This is a book about the church of Christ.
- 29:32That's what the kingdom of God is.
- 29:33It's the church of Christ.
- 29:34Let's hold up book number three.
- 29:36That's baptism.
- 29:37That is the salvation of Christ.
- 29:39So when Bobby Bates wrote back to the Bible, he wrote a Bible study series based upon what Philip did.
- 29:45Philip talked about the authority of Christ, the church of Christ, and the salvation.
- 29:50of Christ.
- 29:51So I would strongly recommend that if you're going to do a Bible study, you cover those three things because you're never going to come up with a better method than Philip.
- 30:02You're not inspired.
- 30:04He was.
- 30:07So I've heard a lot of evangelists in my day and every now and then I run across a brother that says, we shouldn't be teaching them about the church before they're saved.
- 30:18Says who?
- 30:20because Philip didn't know that rule.
- 30:23Philip taught him about the church, where they said in Acts two, you know, they didn't talk about the church, how do you know that?
- 30:28Acts two, verse 41 says what?
- 30:31With many other words, they testify and exhort saying, save yourselves from this crooked and ordained towards you.
- 30:36What words?
- 30:37We don't have those words.
- 30:38By the way, the church was in her infancy.
- 30:42She was just being established.
- 30:44Okay, we didn't have all the ins and outs of the church in Acts two.
- 30:48It wasn't until verse 47, she's in existence.
- 30:53and pay very close attention to what the evangelists did and act and let's just duplicate it.
- 30:58Let's just do what they did.
- 31:00If we do what Philip did, would we be wrong?
- 31:03Yes or no?
- 31:04No.
- 31:05If we don't do what Philip did, could we be wrong?
- 31:07Yes.
- 31:08Of course.
- 31:08All right, number three, it's successful, works.
- 31:13Why do I love back to the Bible?
- 31:14Why do I love evangelism?
- 31:15Because New Testament evangelism works.
- 31:18And when you put a tool in the hand of a member of the church, it's incredible what happens.
- 31:24So I said, Ms.
- 31:26Wilma, I said, when you and Bobby did these Bible studies, what was your rate of conversion?
- 31:30She said, oh, 90%.
- 31:32We kept records,
- 31:34So Nicole and I went home after that trip.
- 31:36I got out my black little notebook.
- 31:38I started counting all the Bible studies out because I kept records of all the studies we've done.
- 31:43You know what I found?
- 31:4692%.
- 31:4692 % of the people we study with become Christians when they finish back to the Bible.
- 31:52Brethren, you don't believe those numbers, then I'm gonna ask you to consider what I'm about to do in the next five minutes.
- 31:58Because I ask my daughter to go back to the churches enrolled, and I wanna know their percentage.
- 32:05I wanna find out is it working.
- 32:07Because if what we're teaching isn't working, I'll just close the school.
- 32:11There's no need for me to go from church to church.
- 32:13I just go back to local work.
- 32:15Here's what I found.
- 32:17I remember a, Jonathan Royal called me one day.
- 32:20He said, Rob, says, eh he said, Mimi's coming.
- 32:25I said, what is a Mimi?
- 32:26He said, that's my mother-in-law.
- 32:28And he says, I'm gonna convert my mother-in-law.
- 32:31And I thought to myself, well, man, it can't be wrong to convert mother-in-laws.
- 32:34I said, that sounds like a good plan to me.
- 32:36And I said, how do you plan to do that, Jonathan?
- 32:39He says, I'm going to do what you do.
- 32:40He said, I'm going to invite the Mimi over when she moves in, and Stephanie's going to make her mother supper.
- 32:46And after supper, I'm going to ask her the transition questions.
- 32:50And Mimi, uh what do you think about the church uh you've been attending?
- 32:56Well, I kind of like it.
- 32:57Mimi, do you know a lot about the Willette Church of Christ?
- 33:00I really don't know a lot about it.
- 33:02Mimi, would you like to know more about the church?
- 33:04Yeah, I just so happen to have these little booklets that are called Back to the Bible.
- 33:08And he said, Rob, we're gonna do a Bible study.
- 33:10I said, good.
- 33:11I said, Jonathan, let me know how it goes.
- 33:14Nine o'clock that night he calls me.
- 33:16Rob, we just finished Back to the Bible book one with the Mimi.
- 33:20I said, how did she like it?
- 33:21She loved it.
- 33:23Three weeks later, he calls me and he says, I need help, Rob, I've never baptized anybody before.
- 33:28I said, I'll be right there.
- 33:29That's baptisms that happen at Collegereville, the ones that Aaron doesn't do.
- 33:34It's the ones that you do.
- 33:36It's when the members get involved.
- 33:38It's when the members are calling you and they're asking for help because they're the ones that will determine whether this church grows or not.
- 33:46will not be Aaron.
- 33:48All right, you ready?
- 33:49Fasten your seatbelt.
- 33:51So here are the churches.
- 33:53First, let's go up to Aberdeen.
- 33:55Every one of these churches baptized 10 % of their membership in one year.
- 33:59Aberdeen, Maryland, this is Will Brown.
- 34:02His church is right across from the baseball park built by Cal Ripken from Minor League World Series.
- 34:08I've been up there, Will is involved.
- 34:10Incredible church, they hit their 10 % every year.
- 34:15fact, they've hit about six of them already this year.
- 34:18This right here is go down to Texas, Bryan College Station, BCS Church of Christ, 16.
- 34:23By the way, that's where the Texas School of Preaching is located.
- 34:25I expect y'all to do better.
- 34:28I challenge every school of preaching.
- 34:30They can baptize 16 at BCS.
- 34:32Every school of preaching, those students need to focus on souls.
- 34:38Let's reach the lost.
- 34:39Let's help Forest Hill reach the lost.
- 34:41Let's Collierville reach the lost.
- 34:43I can think of a better work for a school of preaching for the students to incorporate themselves into that local church and help reach lost souls.
- 34:53What about central Kentucky?
- 34:55is where Adam Fawn is.
- 34:5718 baptisms.
- 34:58Every year they hit it.
- 34:59This is Chapel Hill, Isaac Bourne, Fred Hardman grad, 19 baptisms.
- 35:05This is Covington, 19 baptisms.
- 35:07This is Coyote, Oklahoma.
- 35:09Never went to a school of preaching.
- 35:11Homegrown preachers, named Keen O'Shrum.
- 35:13They set the record in 2023 with 31.2 % baptism rate.
- 35:18In fact, he's been so good, we hired him.
- 35:20Now he's one of our regional trainers.
- 35:22Excellent church.
- 35:23from 22 to, they got up to 70 members, two and a half years.
- 35:30Let's go over here to East Flushings, we're in New York, we're baptizing in Queens, every year he hits his mark.
- 35:37Every year he hits, he started with a very little number of members.
- 35:41Now there are about 50 or so.
- 35:43And every year he hits his mark.
- 35:45Let's go back down to Tennessee, East Maine, Murfreesboro, 19 baptisms.
- 35:49Let's go to Forest Hill, Memphis last year, 11 baptisms.
- 35:53You add in your restorations, you hit your mark.
- 35:56That church got busy.
- 35:58I could not be more thankful than the work that Scott Kane and those elders did last year as they focused that church on soul winning.
- 36:06Let's go back to Glencoe, seven baptisms, that's where we attend.
- 36:11When my wife and family, when my children, we got there, they had 45 members.
- 36:15They've from 180 to 45 in 10 years.
- 36:18In two and a half years, we've gone from 45 to 120.
- 36:22and we used evangelism and we made it the folk, we've had six already this year.
- 36:27We've got five Bible studies going on right now at Glencoe.
- 36:30Right now, Granbury Street, Cleveland, Texas, 10 baptisms.
- 36:34Let's go back down to Alabama, Hatton.
- 36:36This is 17 baptisms.
- 36:38Chris Miller, this is Honolulu, Tagaluma, Essene, Memphis Grad, 13 baptisms.
- 36:43He has hit the mark every year.
- 36:45When we first went to Honolulu, they had 90 members.
- 36:48Now they have 150 members.
- 36:51Ask him if it works.
- 36:52because we hired him.
- 36:53He's one of our regional trainers too.
- 36:55Then we have the Decarne's Church of Christ.
- 36:58This is Knoxville, Tennessee, 43 baptisms.
- 37:02So here we have a congregation, Steve Higginbotham.
- 37:04They've had a hundred baptisms in two years.
- 37:07This is where the Southeast Institute of Biblical Studies is located.
- 37:11Does it work?
- 37:11Ask them, because they've had a hundred baptisms in two years.
- 37:14This is Lafayette Church of Christ.
- 37:16David paid in nine baptisms.
- 37:18He had Lou Gehrig's disease.
- 37:20They literally had to carry him into the pulpit.
- 37:23He just passed away not long ago and that church is continuing.
- 37:27In fact, the elders just called me and they said, Rob, we're gonna retrain the church again with this new preacher and they're doing a great job.
- 37:34Lake Regions, New Hampshire, you know, you can't, it doesn't work in the Northeast.
- 37:37You know, they're kind of, you know, they're kind of European up there, you know, they don't really believe in God up in the North.
- 37:43They don't know that at Lake Regions because they just baptize people.
- 37:47Every year they hit their mark.
- 37:48Here's La Plata, here's Eric Sykes, 50 baptisms in two years.
- 37:52He's one of our regional trainers.
- 37:54So Eric has set the mark.
- 37:5650 baptisms, two years.
- 37:58He goes around to those churches up there around the DC area.
- 38:02In fact, we were just up there with him.
- 38:04And so we went to a church.
- 38:07Eric follows up.
- 38:08And we're in the Beltway.
- 38:10You know the Beltway around DC?
- 38:12Brethren, they need some evangelism in DC.
- 38:15If there's any place on earth that needs evangelism, it's those politicians.
- 38:19And that's exactly what we gave him, a strong dose of it.
- 38:22We're going back in the fall.
- 38:23This is right here, is Linville Forest.
- 38:25This is Kernelsville, 11 baptisms.
- 38:27This right here is Madisonville, Russell Klein, MSOP grad, six baptisms.
- 38:32This right here is McKenzie.
- 38:33Here's another MSOP grad, no, McKenzie is, uh Steele, I think he's an MSOP grad.
- 38:39This right here is Terry uh Townsend, nine baptisms in Ohio.
- 38:43This is Niceville, Joe Palmer, 16 baptisms.
- 38:46This is Northern Oaks, Church of Christ, 27.
- 38:49grad, we graduated together, 27 baptism.
- 38:53This is Oak Hill, 14 baptisms, that's where Matt Wallins at.
- 38:56This is Paintsville, homegrown preacher, Zach Collins, never went to a preaching school, he's about your age.
- 39:0311 baptisms.
- 39:05This right here is Raven County, this is McKinley, McKinley has an MSOP grad, he had six baptisms, this is a church of like 20, it's a mission work in Georgia.
- 39:18and he revitalizes a church, he surpasses his goals.
- 39:23You know how many baptisms he's had this year?
- 39:25He's already had four.
- 39:26They get 35 in attendance Sunday because of evangelism.
- 39:32But it doesn't work, it?
- 39:34Let's go back over here to Risen, Arkansas.
- 39:36This is Keaton Shrum, little church about 50, five baptisms.
- 39:40This is Sanford, a church of 60.
- 39:41They've had four baptisms, two restorations.
- 39:44I'm not talking about people saying, I need you to pray for me.
- 39:47I'm talking about true prodigals, people who've left the church and come home.
- 39:51Southside, Grand Rapids, Michigan, seven.
- 39:54Sunset, this is where Zach Williams is located.
- 39:5818 baptisms from Zach, incredible soul winner.
- 40:01Union, South Carolina, Terry Hale,
- 40:05This is a, Warner Robbins, Daniel Steersman, 17 baptisms, Woodstock, Georgia, Matt Amos, 15 baptisms.
- 40:13Is that enough evidence?
- 40:15Brother, I want you to look at the names of the churches.
- 40:17These are the churches that are succeeding.
- 40:20These are the churches that are reporting and keeping that 10 % threshold.
- 40:24So how many baptisms does that mean Collegue of Real Needs?
- 40:28You need six.
- 40:31Is that a reasonable goal?
- 40:33Six baptisms next year at seven.
- 40:38You know what happens if you baptize 10 % of your membership seven years in a row?
- 40:42Anybody know what the rule of seven is?
- 40:44Anybody know what happens?
- 40:48You double.
- 40:50You double in seven years.
- 40:52What happens if you baptize 20 %?
- 40:55You do what Keno Shrum did and they tripled.
- 40:59It's amazing what happens when we start putting things in proportion.
- 41:02here's some more.
- 41:04Maybe you know some of these churches.
- 41:06These are the churches that are baptizing.
- 41:08These are the churches that are evangelizing.
- 41:10These are the churches that do not take no for an answer.
- 41:13These are the churches that when they hit a brick wall, they run through it.
- 41:17They don't give up because souls are at stake.
- 41:23I thank God for churches.
- 41:27that evangelize, because the Church of Christ can grow.
- 41:32We don't have to have popcorn machines, vending machines.
- 41:36We don't have to fill our churches with coffee bars.
- 41:39We don't have to become the next social network church.
- 41:42What we need to do is focus people on evangelism.
- 41:47And when we do that, we can grow.
- 41:49I want to spend a few minutes this evening demonstrating the power of a Bible study.
- 41:53So I want to baptize somebody tonight.
- 41:55I hope your baptistry is ready.
- 41:57And so we're going to demonstrate it.
- 41:59And I need a volunteer.
- 42:00So I'm looking for somebody that can help me.
- 42:02Who here can help me and volunteer?
- 42:05uh who can volunteer?
- 42:08Josh, put your hand down.
- 42:09You know, preachers, they always want to steal the limelight.
- 42:12And they always want to steal the limelight.
- 42:14And brother, you want to come up here?
- 42:17You want to help me?
- 42:17m
- 42:18I know you will.
- 42:19You're going to be fine.
- 42:20And I'm like, can you get that man a chair?
- 42:22Someone get him a chair.
- 42:23Bring that chair up.
- 42:24Brother, can you bring that chair up for him?
- 42:26He needs a chair.
- 42:27So I'm going to use this brother right here.
- 42:30And we're going to put him right in the chair.
- 42:32And did I warn you I was going to do this?
- 42:34No.
- 42:34So this is real.
- 42:36This is real.
- 42:36I feel like you're going to give me a prayer cloth and put me on the ground.
- 42:40Brother, does it look like I can throw you on the ground?
- 42:42I don't think I can.
- 42:44And so sit right there.
- 42:45All right.
- 42:45And you're going to need a Bible.
- 42:47oh
- 42:48happen to have these little booklets and so you'll need the booklets and you may need your Bible and someone go give his Bible for him.
- 42:59He may need his Bible.
- 43:00So we're gonna demonstrate the effectiveness of back to the Bible.
- 43:04Now on page 102 of your evangelism simplified workbook, everybody open their workbook, they're going to notice that we have a survey and on that survey we have questions and
- 43:15those questions there and those are questions
- 43:18is designed to evaluate where the church is at.
- 43:23So where is the congregation located?
- 43:26In other words, is that church, okay, as you are working with people, working with people who believe in God, or do they believe in the Bible, or do they believe in Jesus, find out
- 43:42where they are on the map.
- 43:44And that's very important.
- 43:45That a church finds out where people are located.
- 43:47And every church is located in a different place.
- 43:49So when you're in Queens, New York, you have a little bit different clientele.
- 43:54When you're in New Hampshire, little bit different makeup.
- 43:56When you're in Austin, Texas, it's different.
- 43:58John Garza said, Rob, about 25 % of all the Bible studies in Austin, Texas don't use back to the Bible.
- 44:05We use believe the Bible.
- 44:07We have to use a different tool because they don't believe in God.
- 44:10So I'm going to find out first where he's located.
- 44:13And so uh the best way to do that is to have a conversation.
- 44:17So I'm going to suggest that we've been spending time together.
- 44:21And we kind of hit it off.
- 44:23uh You came and visited one Sunday.
- 44:26uh
- 44:27uh We found out that you were just moving into the area and uh my family invited you out to eat and uh we immediately hit it off at that Memphis barbecue and uh you enjoyed it and
- 44:40I enjoyed it.
- 44:41Then we found out we're both UT fans and uh we even went to a game.
- 44:45Let's say we went to a game together.
- 44:47We watched some football together and we've been.
- 44:52Who'd we be?
- 44:53Alabama.
- 44:54All Alabama.
- 44:55right.
- 44:57So any case, sorry brother.
- 45:01Any case, so we built this little relationship.
- 45:04Now I always do that.
- 45:05I'm never gonna rush into a study.
- 45:06I'm gonna build a little bit of a friendship with people.
- 45:09I wanna get to know them.
- 45:10So one of these days, maybe we're just talking one day and say, I tell you what.
- 45:17What do you think about the Collierville Church of Christ?
- 45:20You've been visiting, what would you think about the church?
- 45:24I figured you'd say that because they've sent you cards, they've taken you out to eat, they're nice hospitable people.
- 45:30You know, I'm kind of on the inside.
- 45:31I don't always see clearly.
- 45:33By the way, do you know a lot about the Call Your Real Church Christ?
- 45:35I do.
- 45:36No, you don't.
- 45:38You just moved here.
- 45:39You don't know much about it.
- 45:40Boy, he's going to be tough.
- 45:41You got to role play with me, okay?
- 45:43You want me to play you?
- 45:45Yes, right.
- 45:46Number three.
- 45:47Number three.
- 45:47All right.
- 45:48Hey, since you've been visiting with us, would you like to know a little bit more about us?
- 45:53Sure.
- 45:53Okay.
- 45:54Hey, my wife, we're smoking a brisket.
- 45:57It's about ready.
- 45:58Why you come over tomorrow night and we'll talk about the church.
- 46:00I don't like Texas barbecue.
- 46:02That's okay.
- 46:03It's Memphis version.
- 46:04Okay.
- 46:04All right.
- 46:05All right.
- 46:05So I told you he's going to be hard.
- 46:07And so any case, so we're going to, I want to have more of the house.
- 46:11And as I'm sitting there with him and I, you know, we're just talking, I said, Hey man, I was thinking, oh
- 46:18You know, if I got lost and I was trying to head over to your house and I called you and say, man, I'm lost.
- 46:23I don't know how to get there.
- 46:24And I said, could you give me directions?
- 46:26Would you help me if I got lost?
- 46:27Sure.
- 46:28OK.
- 46:28What's the first question you'd ask me?
- 46:30Where are you at?
- 46:31That's right.
- 46:32When we study the Bible, it's kind important to know where we're at.
- 46:35And I think I know the answers to these questions, but I guess we both believe in God.
- 46:40We've talked about God and we both believe in God.
- 46:42That's right.
- 46:43And you said you'd like to read your Bible every day.
- 46:45So I suspect you believe the Bible is the word of God.
- 46:50you believe God will do everything he said in this book.
- 46:53No mistakes, no issues, no conflicts.
- 46:56You believe in that book.
- 46:58That's right.
- 46:59And you said that you believe in Jesus.
- 47:02You're Jesus is a son of God.
- 47:03He was born of a virgin and buried and rose the third day.
- 47:07Yeah, that's right.
- 47:08Me too.
- 47:08And I assume we both believe in the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
- 47:13We both believe in that.
- 47:14And I assume we both believe we're saved.
- 47:17I remember I was 15 years old when I was saved.
- 47:19Greatest day of my life.
- 47:21You remember how old you were when you were saved?
- 47:23Okay, how old were you?
- 47:2438.
- 47:25I want you to tell me what you did to be saved.
- 47:27You mind sharing that with me?
- 47:34I think I went down to some, I had some service.
- 47:38went down and then they asked me uh if I wanted to be saved, I guess.
- 47:42And I said, I think so.
- 47:44And what happened?
- 47:45Tell me about the experience you had up there.
- 47:47What was it that?
- 47:48They had me say a prayer.
- 47:49Say a prayer.
- 47:50And you said the prayer and you knew you were saved.
- 47:52I felt it.
- 47:53You felt, of course.
- 47:54felt it.
- 47:55Do y'all vet your members before you let them in at Calgarville?
- 47:59I mean, I'm just kidding.
- 48:00All right.
- 48:01So any case, whatever he says,
- 48:04You know what you don't see right now is my wife is writing this down.
- 48:07And she's gonna write down whatever you say.
- 48:09She's writing it down too.
- 48:11So they're writing it down.
- 48:12And so whatever it is that my wife is gonna write this down.
- 48:15So I'm trying to establish a baseline.
- 48:17Where am I going with this?
- 48:19So if he said, you know, I'm not so sure I believe in God.
- 48:21We're not gonna start with back to the Bible.
- 48:24But what I found is he's a religious guy.
- 48:26He's just not been taught properly.
- 48:28He respects God, the Bible, Jesus.
- 48:30He just needs a Bible study.
- 48:32And so I've got all the answers.
- 48:33And then I'm gonna ask one more thing.
- 48:35Hey, have you ever been baptized?
- 48:38Yes.
- 48:38And how long was it after you were saved that you were baptized?
- 48:42About three weeks.
- 48:43Three weeks, about three weeks.
- 48:44I'm gonna get that recorded.
- 48:45I got everything I need.
- 48:47I'm gonna make sure I get this information.
- 48:49And here's the difference between Robin Nicole today and Robin Nicole in 2016.
- 48:56Here's the big difference.
- 48:57In 2016, I'd have taken that sheet on page 102, I'd have photocopied it and I'd given it to him and I said, fill this out.
- 49:05It's awkward.
- 49:06It's very awkward.
- 49:07And he's gonna feel like he's taking a test and I'm evaluating him.
- 49:11Now the Rob of today has realized that if I just have a conversation with him about those questions and my wife writes down the answers, we're just as good.
- 49:19And he's not uncomfortable.
- 49:21And in fact, it's kind of like I shared a little bit about my life, he shared some about his life, and now um I've got the answers I needed, because I need to know where he's at.
- 49:31We can progress into back to the Bible.
- 49:33So my suggestion is,
- 49:35a conversation, don't test them.
- 49:37That's my suggestion.
- 49:38Alright, let's go back to the Bible.
- 49:39Green Booklet, and we'll go to page number one, and we're gonna take our Bibles to John chapter eight, verse 32.
- 49:45I'm always gonna have him read the passage, and sometimes I'll ask the question and let him answer.
- 49:56So go ahead and read that passage, brother.
- 49:59Yes sir, if you would.
- 50:04Okay, Jesus says the blank will make you free.
- 50:07What is it?
- 50:08The truth.
- 50:08True.
- 50:09Really easy.
- 50:10How many of you can do that?
- 50:11Raise your hand if you can do that.
- 50:13There's a few of you who are a little slower.
- 50:15It's okay.
- 50:15We'll do another one.
- 50:16All right.
- 50:16It's not hard.
- 50:17This is real simple stuff.
- 50:18go to John 424.
- 50:20It's okay.
- 50:20We're going to go.
- 50:21I'm going to get everybody's hand up.
- 50:22John 424.
- 50:24So read that for me.
- 50:25John 424.
- 50:27God is spirit and those who worship me are most
- 50:31Okay, God says we must worship him in spirit and in?
- 50:35True.
- 50:35How many of you can do that?
- 50:36Raise your hand.
- 50:37It's unanimous.
- 50:38So that's as hard as it gets.
- 50:40All you're doing is asking a question and you're filling in the word based upon what the study says.
- 50:45If you want a visual of back to the Bible, book one, take your evangelism simplified guidebook, go to page 66, chart two, that's your visual.
- 50:53I love visuals.
- 50:55Most of those visuals I don't use in a Bible study.
- 50:58It's a safety net.
- 50:59If I need them, I'll pull them out.
- 51:01I hope I don't need them.
- 51:02normally don't, but if I do, I've got them.
- 51:04That's why they're called a safety net.
- 51:06A trapeze artist needs a safety net.
- 51:08You hope they don't need it, but if they do, you're glad it's there.
- 51:11All right.
- 51:12So this is one of my just simple illustrations.
- 51:15So what is he going to learn in book one?
- 51:18He's going to learn that all the truth starts with God the father and the father gave all that truth to the son and his son gave all that truth to the Holy spirit.
- 51:25The Holy spirit took all that truth, inspired the apostles.
- 51:28The apostles took all that truth, wrote it down in the
- 51:30Bible.
- 51:31We're under the New Testament and not the Old Testament.
- 51:34That is the name of Jesus Christ.
- 51:37That's book one.
- 51:38It's not hard.
- 51:38It's real simple.
- 51:40But it's important because it's the foundation of everything else he's going to learn.
- 51:44So in book number one, we're going to learn some fundamental truths that we're under the New Testament, not the Old Testament.
- 51:50That's book one.
- 51:51Let's go to book number two.
- 51:52All right.
- 51:53Book number two.
- 51:54Let's go to page five.
- 51:55I'm just going to demonstrate just a very few examples of why Bible
- 52:00Bible studies are important.
- 52:02Now notice the Great Commission did not say go ye therefore and read the Bible, did it?
- 52:07It didn't say go ye therefore and read the book of Acts.
- 52:10So I've asked what's your strategy for a Bible study?
- 52:12Why just tell me to read the book of Acts?
- 52:14That's not what Philip did.
- 52:16He didn't say go read the book of Acts.
- 52:20So a Bible study is not just reading your Bible.
- 52:22How can I accept some man guide me?
- 52:26So your goal is, you're a teacher, you're a guide, that's your job.
- 52:29And so how do we guide people?
- 52:31You need a tool.
- 52:32So the Great Commission says, go either for and teach.
- 52:35So the gospel is a teaching gospel, and that's what we're trying to do.
- 52:38We're trying to boil it down to some fundamentals.
- 52:41And so this study is designed to guide you, to outline you, to provide a simple.
- 52:47systematic approach for the student and to keep the teacher on point so the teacher doesn't chase rabbits.
- 52:55And back to the Bible is excellent.
- 52:57Let's go to page five, Acts 20, verse seven.
- 53:01Hey, uh I'm gonna ask you for some allowance here.
- 53:07I know you've been reading these passages.
- 53:08Would you let me read Acts 20, verse seven?
- 53:11Okay, here's the reason I wanna do it.
- 53:13Acts 20, verse seven.
- 53:14And I do this in every study.
- 53:16If I mess it up, if I misquote it, would you stop me?
- 53:19Would you say, hey, that's not what it says?
- 53:21Yeah, what are you quoting from?
- 53:23OK.
- 53:24Acts 20, verse 7.
- 53:25You'll see, it's very clear.
- 53:26You cannot miss it.
- 53:27Verse 7.
- 53:28All right.
- 53:28So I'm going to start it.
- 53:30And if I misquote it, if I
- 53:32If I read it wrong, I want you to stop me.
- 53:35You ready?
- 53:36Upon the last day of the week when the disciples came together.
- 53:41You gonna stop me?
- 53:43Okay, let's try that again.
- 53:45Upon the last day.
- 53:47It says first.
- 53:48It says first, okay.
- 53:49So I'm always gonna misquote it.
- 53:50This is one of the techniques that I use.
- 53:52I always misquote.
- 53:54Upon the last day of the week when the disciples.
- 53:56So here it is.
- 53:57the first month of the.
- 54:01week.
- 54:01This is last first day of the week.
- 54:03First day I said month, didn't I?
- 54:04Yeah.
- 54:04Okay.
- 54:05Try this again.
- 54:09On the first day of the year when the disciples came to...
- 54:12What's wrong with that?
- 54:14It's the first day of the week.
- 54:15The week.
- 54:16What did I say?
- 54:17Year.
- 54:17Year.
- 54:18I'm going to get it eventually.
- 54:19All right.
- 54:20Here it is.
- 54:21Quarterly, the disciples came together to break bread.
- 54:23The first day of the I know it's exciting, isn't it?
- 54:26uh Monthly, the disciples came together to break bread.
- 54:31On Christmas, the disciples came together to break bread.
- 54:33On Easter, the disciples came to...
- 54:35Every other month, the disciples...
- 54:37He would come every time then too, but it's still the first day of the I knew he was going to be a lot of fun.
- 54:45So what I'm going to do is I'm going to read it wrong every time.
- 54:48Why am I doing that, everybody?
- 54:50To get him a seat.
- 54:51OK, that's right.
- 54:53And we call that self-conviction.
- 54:56He's convicting himself.
- 54:57You know why?
- 54:58Because somewhere in that answer is what he's been doing all his life.
- 55:02I didn't call him out.
- 55:03I didn't tell him he's wrong.
- 55:04He told me he was wrong.
- 55:07He said, no, that's not right.
- 55:08It's not monthly.
- 55:09Now, I didn't have to ask him how you did it growing up.
- 55:12He said, it's not right.
- 55:13It's not quarterly.
- 55:14It's not every other month.
- 55:15It's his first day of the week.
- 55:17OK, that's what you think.
- 55:19So what I do is I'm going to let him correct himself.
- 55:23It's called self-correction.
- 55:24It's the most powerful form of correction.
- 55:27When someone realizes and reasons through it.
- 55:29Now,
- 55:30We're going to read it correctly now.
- 55:31Upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread.
- 55:35Now here's your questions.
- 55:36When God told the Israelites in Exodus chapter 20 verse 8 to remember the Sabbath, did he mean for them to keep every Sabbath?
- 55:44Yes.
- 55:45What happens if they skip the Sabbath?
- 55:48What happens if a man said, you know there was a bad storm last night and there's a bunch of sticks in my yard and I'm just going to pick up the sticks.
- 55:54after all, Moses didn't say you got to observe every Sabbath.
- 55:58What would happen to that man?
- 56:00Anybody know?
- 56:02Are you sure?
- 56:03That's exactly what happened to him.
- 56:05He was stoned because we have an example of that.
- 56:07What if we went to Moses and it doesn't say every Sabbath?
- 56:11Moses says, remember the Sabbath and you skipped one.
- 56:16It's interesting how we can understand it in the Sabbath.
- 56:20I wonder if we can understand it in Acts 20 verse 7.
- 56:24No one seemed to get confused.
- 56:26Let's keep going.
- 56:28We're gonna ask again questions, this is how you teach.
- 56:30So we're just gonna keep asking questions.
- 56:31Here we go.
- 56:32When those Christians met upon the first day of the week to eat the Lord's Supper, did they do it on the first day of each week?
- 56:38Yes.
- 56:39So Christians did they eat the Lord's Supper on the first day of the week?
- 56:43Should we do that too?
- 56:44Yes.
- 56:45Okay.
- 56:46So I'm just building slowly truths.
- 56:50All right, now what we need is to establish contrast.
- 56:53If you want a conversion, you got to establish contrast, not camouflage, but contrasts.
- 56:58Contrasts are very important because contrasts are the reason why you have conversions.
- 57:05If you don't have a contrast, you don't have conversion, why convert if there's no difference?
- 57:09So we have to build in those contrasts so he sees a difference between what he's been doing, you know, throughout his life in the religious world, what the Bible says, and this
- 57:19is a big one.
- 57:20This is the Lord's Supper.
- 57:21And if you can't get the Lord's Supper right, I wonder what else you got wrong.
- 57:26You know, the Lord's Supper is a pretty big point.
- 57:29If you can't get it right there, there may be some other points where you don't get it right.
- 57:32But we're not done.
- 57:34I want you to go to 1 Corinthians 16, 1 and 2.
- 57:36Everybody go there.
- 57:37Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I've given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye.
- 57:42Upon the first day of the week, let every one of you live by his door, as God has prospered, that there be no gatherings when I come.
- 57:49Now, what are we talking about in 1 Corinthians 16?
- 57:52What's the subject matter?
- 57:55You know what the subject matter I'll read the passage now concerning the collection for the saints as I've given an order to the churches of Galatia even so to ye upon the first
- 58:05day of the week let every one of you laid by in store as God has prospered there be no gatherings when I come what's the subject what are we talking about our means our means
- 58:15we're talking about
- 58:17giving, right?
- 58:18So by the way, you said you've gone to church all your life.
- 58:21When you go to these churches, you know, did they ever pass the plate and ask for money?
- 58:25Okay, they do.
- 58:27And what day do they do that?
- 58:29What day do they ask for the money?
- 58:31Every Sunday?
- 58:33Okay.
- 58:34And have you ever gone to one of these churches that skipped a Sunday that said, you know, we're just not going to pass the plate today?
- 58:39So when it comes to the collection, they always pass the plate.
- 58:43And if you were to ask the preacher, well, preacher, why would we pass the plate on the first day of the week?
- 58:47Well, they might say because in first Corinthians chapter 16, it says, you know, upon the first day of the week.
- 58:52And they not cook the scriptures.
- 58:54So you're telling me in all the years you've been going to church, you've never seen a church skip a Sunday.
- 58:59They always pass the plate for the money.
- 59:01So when it comes to taking your money, they always get it right.
- 59:10But when it comes to memorializing the Son of God and taking the Lord's Supper, same language.
- 59:17First day of the week.
- 59:18They get confused.
- 59:20Why is it that they don't, why is it that they skip the Lord's Supper but not the money?
- 59:25Let me be very clear.
- 59:26When it comes to taking your money, they will never misunderstand the scripture.
- 59:30They'll always get it right.
- 59:32But when it comes to memorializing the Son of God, we get confused.
- 59:36I just don't know if I can understand that or not.
- 59:39That's got a contrast.
- 59:40It's huge.
- 59:42And Bobby makes it very clear in this booklet.
- 59:44Let's look at that question.
- 59:45Is it God's will that we give as we've been prospered?
- 59:48Yes.
- 59:48OK.
- 59:48And should we make a contribution on the same day we're to partake of the Lord's Supper?
- 59:52That's what it says.
- 59:53That's what it says.
- 59:55You know what he's going to do with that?
- 59:57He's going to wrestle with it.
- 59:59He's going to go home.
- 1:00:00He's gonna try to sleep and as he's sleeping, he can't sleep because he can't rectify what he just read because his church doesn't do that.
- 1:00:09He's trying to figure out why my pastor just does it once a quarter when the Bible says on the first day of the week and he's gonna say, pastor, pastor, why don't we take the Lord's
- 1:00:16Supper every Sunday?
- 1:00:17Well, you know, if you take it every Sunday, it doesn't mean as much.
- 1:00:21You know, they don't say that about the money.
- 1:00:25When's the last time you told your wife you loved her?
- 1:00:28Today?
- 1:00:30How about if he didn't tell you he loved you for a whole year?
- 1:00:35And you say, honey, are you ever going to tell me you love me?
- 1:00:37Honey, if I just do it once a year, it means more.
- 1:00:42You think that would work in your marriage?
- 1:00:45Isn't it interesting how people get confused in religion?
- 1:00:48Those arguments just don't make any sense, do they?
- 1:00:51But people are trying to figure, why aren't we doing the Lord's Supper like we're supposed to?
- 1:00:55Because it says on the first day of the week.
- 1:00:58Moses didn't get confused.
- 1:01:01We shouldn't either.
- 1:01:02We're going take a little break.
- 1:01:03I'm going to put you back in the hot seat.
- 1:01:05You're too much fun.
- 1:01:06Will you come back after the break?
- 1:01:07Five minutes?
- 1:01:08OK.
- 1:01:08We're not done.
- 1:01:09Aaron, did you ever find it?
- 1:01:12OK.
- 1:01:13OK.
- 1:01:14Let's go ahead and get started.
- 1:01:15If I could have everybody come back into the auditorium.
- 1:01:24Michael and I have had a little fun this evening and we're going to spend about 10-15 minutes and finish this lesson and move to lesson five.
- 1:01:37If you have your red booklet, open your back of the Bibles.
- 1:01:43Eric, could you advance the screen wake it up for me?
- 1:01:46We'll go ahead and...
- 1:01:47There you go.
- 1:01:48right.
- 1:01:51One of the important...
- 1:01:55considerations in a Bible study is the the fact that although Michael and
- 1:02:01have done these studies and he's realized that there are differences.
- 1:02:05are truths that he did not know.
- 1:02:08He didn't know when to take the Lord's Supper.
- 1:02:10He didn't know how the church was organized.
- 1:02:12couldn't even find his church in the Bible.
- 1:02:14He read about the Church of Christ.
- 1:02:16He learned about worship.
- 1:02:18He didn't realize he was just supposed to sing.
- 1:02:20He didn't understand elders and deacons and the qualifications of elders and deacons.
- 1:02:25There's a lot of differences.
- 1:02:27He didn't understand the Old and New Testament.
- 1:02:29Although,
- 1:02:30Michael has learned all of these truths, Michael still thinks he saved.
- 1:02:36That's important.
- 1:02:37All right, so it's important to understand the psychology or the makeup of the prospect.
- 1:02:43And it's taken me years to come to an understanding that when I'm in a Bible study, just because they realize they were wrong about the Lord's Supper doesn't mean they realize
- 1:02:52they're lost.
- 1:02:53It just means I was wrong about the Lord's Supper, but I've said the prayer, so I'm saved.
- 1:02:58So we can all disagree on the Lord's Supper, but we can all go to heaven.
- 1:03:01And so we can all disagree about elders, we can all go to heaven.
- 1:03:04We can disagree about deacons, we can all go to heaven.
- 1:03:07We can disagree about the...
- 1:03:08you know, all these other issues, but we can go to heaven.
- 1:03:11The issue is that in order for Michael to become a Christian, Michael has to know he's lost.
- 1:03:17Michael thinks he's saved.
- 1:03:19So I've got to get Michael to a point where says, I'm lost.
- 1:03:22Now, in order for that to happen,
- 1:03:24All right?
- 1:03:25I'm going to need help.
- 1:03:27Because if I looked at Michael and said, you know you're going to hell, don't you?
- 1:03:30Well, that's the end of that study, right?
- 1:03:33That's not a strategy for success.
- 1:03:36So there's a book, and it's titled How to Close the Study.
- 1:03:40And it gives you uh suggestions on how to bring people across the finish line, how to get them to make that final decision.
- 1:03:48All right.
- 1:03:49One of the keys to a successful close is to anticipate objections.
- 1:03:54the objection before they do.
- 1:03:56Let me give you an example.
- 1:03:58So if I was trying to sell a house and maybe I'm a real estate agent and I know this house has some deficiencies, some things that you're not going to care for, what am I going to
- 1:04:08do?
- 1:04:08I want to point those out immediately oh as you walk onto the property.
- 1:04:15And I'm going to frame them.
- 1:04:17And I'm going to try to get you over those humps.
- 1:04:20If you're trying to go buy a car, and the car
- 1:04:24He either knows that the price tag of $56,000 is out of sight and most people are going to be scared away.
- 1:04:33He's going to frame that.
- 1:04:34He's going to frame it in such a way that it doesn't run you off.
- 1:04:38And I'm sure the plumber does the same thing.
- 1:04:40When the plumber comes to the door, and this is a good example, you're going to frame the injection.
- 1:04:45You're going to handle it yourself.
- 1:04:47You're not going to wait for them to come at you because then you're defensive.
- 1:04:51You're going to prepare them for it.
- 1:04:54Everybody does this.
- 1:04:56The Navy recruiter does it.
- 1:04:58Hey, $20,000 signing bonus.
- 1:05:00Okay, the Navy recruiter knows how to frame the argument, all right?
- 1:05:02He knows that, hey, you're going to see the world.
- 1:05:04You know, you're going to be operating, you know, know, $10 million equipment.
- 1:05:09You know what mean?
- 1:05:09I mean, he knows how to do it, okay?
- 1:05:12So here's what I'm trying to suggest.
- 1:05:14We know there are landmines in Bible studies.
- 1:05:18We know there are objections.
- 1:05:19We know there's going to be issues that are going to have to work past.
- 1:05:23The question is how do
- 1:05:24you get past them.
- 1:05:26Now either you have to rely upon your experience, your wisdom, your intellect, your study, which we're going to eliminate just about every church member.
- 1:05:36We're going to scare them and they'll say I don't know how to do that.
- 1:05:39Or we use an organized method.
- 1:05:42Back to the Bible anticipates all the objections.
- 1:05:45There's hardly an objection they can raise that will not be dealt with in the Bible study.
- 1:05:49And that's why we do Bible studies.
- 1:05:50We use a method because it helps us get through those objections.
- 1:05:54And so whether it's sprinkling, as he brought up, it's in back to the Bible.
- 1:05:58We're going to frame it.
- 1:05:59We're going to bring it up.
- 1:05:59We're going to answer it.
- 1:06:00So when it comes down to time for gospel obedience, it's no longer an issue.
- 1:06:05We've already dealt with that.
- 1:06:06So whatever it is, we're going to deal with it in the booklet.
- 1:06:10So that's why you need the book.
- 1:06:11Who needs a Bible study?
- 1:06:13He needs a Bible study because it makes it
- 1:06:15Simple.
- 1:06:15He needs the Bible study because it's organized.
- 1:06:17It's systematic.
- 1:06:19It anticipates objections.
- 1:06:20You know who else needs it?
- 1:06:21I do.
- 1:06:22So I don't overteach.
- 1:06:25I don't over talk.
- 1:06:26I don't insert things that are not needed.
- 1:06:29And so I don't have to be the intellectual giant.
- 1:06:32All I've got to do is read my Bible.
- 1:06:35And so Bible studies are designed to help the average person bring people to Christ.
- 1:06:42Let's go to page number nine.
- 1:06:44And go to page nine.
- 1:06:45On page nine, we're going to uh look at the first close.
- 1:06:49Back in the Bible, it's four invitation songs.
- 1:06:52This is number one.
- 1:06:53And so this is the close.
- 1:06:54And we're going to try to bring them to the cross.
- 1:06:57We're going to use Romans 6, 3 through 5.
- 1:06:59So I want to talk about the gospel.
- 1:07:01Jesus died for our sins.
- 1:07:02Jesus was buried.
- 1:07:03Jesus rose again.
- 1:07:04I'm going to show him this picture.
- 1:07:06So on the screen, you'll see a picture.
- 1:07:07You can see it there on the monitor.
- 1:07:09And it's a beautiful picture.
- 1:07:11It's a picture of Jesus dying on the cross and being buried.
- 1:07:14in his ascension on the third day.
- 1:07:16That's important.
- 1:07:17So we're going to focus on the gospel.
- 1:07:21Why?
- 1:07:21Why do we want to focus on the gospel?
- 1:07:23Because the gospel is what?
- 1:07:26It's a power of God to save.
- 1:07:27So let's use the power of God.
- 1:07:29Let's use that power.
- 1:07:30So I'm going to focus him on the cross.
- 1:07:32I'm going show him the picture.
- 1:07:34I'm going to ask, Michael, do you recognize that?
- 1:07:36Do you see that?
- 1:07:38What do you think about that?
- 1:07:41Is that powerful?
- 1:07:42Do you believe in that?
- 1:07:43It's the core of who we are.
- 1:07:45Michael, let's read Romans 6, 3 through 5.
- 1:07:47And I want you to think about that as we read it.
- 1:07:50All right, here we go.
- 1:07:58Now, Michael, want you to notice we've used the word into twice, twice.
- 1:08:04has said, whatever it is we're talking about here transitions us.
- 1:08:07moves us from the outside to the inside.
- 1:08:11location to another and so therefore we are notice this Michael buried I would like you to put a number one right by the word buried put a number one right by the word buried
- 1:08:20because there we identified the burial all right so therefore it's I'm sorry you go back to death therefore we are let's go back to the beginning no he not there's so many of us
- 1:08:31who were baptized into Jesus Christ or baptized into his death put a number one by the word
- 1:08:37So we've identified the death.
- 1:08:39That's important because this is the process of the gospel, the death.
- 1:08:43Therefore we are buried.
- 1:08:44Put a number two by the word buried.
- 1:08:46So now we've got the death and the burial.
- 1:08:48All right?
- 1:08:49Death, burial.
- 1:08:50Therefore we are buried with him by baptism in two.
- 1:08:53That's the third time we've used that word in two.
- 1:08:55So we're transitioning.
- 1:08:57We're moving locations.
- 1:08:58It's obvious three times God has said baptism is an in two process.
- 1:09:04Michael, I've got news for you tonight.
- 1:09:06There's no one
- 1:09:07sitting in this auditorium that didn't come into the building.
- 1:09:10No, not one.
- 1:09:12Michael, I've got another question.
- 1:09:13Do you think it's possible that someone could be in the building if they did not come into the building?
- 1:09:19No.
- 1:09:19No.
- 1:09:20And I've been asking this question for 25 years.
- 1:09:23And there was an engineer.
- 1:09:25He raised his hand.
- 1:09:26He said, preacher, it's possible to be in the building if you didn't come into the building.
- 1:09:31I said, enlighten us.
- 1:09:32He said, the building could have been built around you.
- 1:09:38I promise the church wasn't built around you.
- 1:09:40So you've got to go into it.
- 1:09:42So into is important.
- 1:09:43Here we go.
- 1:09:44Therefore we are buried with him, but that doesn't end to death.
- 1:09:47like his cross was raised.
- 1:09:48Let's put a number three by the word raised.
- 1:09:50So now we've identified three things.
- 1:09:51We've identified the death, we've identified the burial, and we've identified the resurrection.
- 1:09:56Michael, is that important to you?
- 1:09:58Absolutely.
- 1:09:58Yeah, me too.
- 1:09:59It's the core of who we are.
- 1:10:00Death, resurrection.
- 1:10:01Now notice this.
- 1:10:02That like his cross was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so he said, walk in doing
- 1:10:07of life.
- 1:10:08Michael, when does the new life happen?
- 1:10:10Before the baptism or after the baptism?
- 1:10:13After the baptism.
- 1:10:14after the burial, when we're resurrected, we get new life.
- 1:10:19Michael, know you love your wife.
- 1:10:23What's her name again?
- 1:10:24Michael, your wife.
- 1:10:25What is her name?
- 1:10:27Shelly.
- 1:10:27Shelly.
- 1:10:29he forgot.
- 1:10:30forgot.
- 1:10:31That's all right.
- 1:10:36came home one day and he says, know, my anniversary is coming up and I'm so blessed.
- 1:10:41I love my wife.
- 1:10:42She's such a good woman.
- 1:10:43uh And we're going to celebrate.
- 1:10:45My wife has always wanted a dog.
- 1:10:47And you know, I'm going to go get my wife.
- 1:10:49I'm going go get her dog.
- 1:10:50So Michael goes down to the dog place and he pets Mark.
- 1:10:54He sees this little white little dog, know, little poodle.
- 1:10:57just puffy little thing.
- 1:10:58He said, oh she just loved this little dog.
- 1:11:01And Michael says, you know, I'm gonna get her the dog.
- 1:11:03So Michael buys this dog and he brings it home.
- 1:11:05He says, honey Shelly, he said, I've got you a dog.
- 1:11:08And for your your anniversary.
- 1:11:10Oh Michael, that's so nice.
- 1:11:12You said you never have a dog.
- 1:11:13You love me so much.
- 1:11:15And so, know, Shelly's got, she's excited.
- 1:11:18And when Michael bought the dog, there was a name on the dog.
- 1:11:21It said Poopsy.
- 1:11:23And she said, the name of the dog is Poopsy.
- 1:11:25Michael didn't really put too
- 1:11:27together.
- 1:11:27doesn't know why it's called the Poopsie, but he finds out quickly because this is a doodling dog.
- 1:11:32He doodles all the time.
- 1:11:33He can't stop doodling.
- 1:11:35And so it's not been house broken.
- 1:11:37So he keeps doodling in the house.
- 1:11:38Now Michael, you love your wife Shelly.
- 1:11:40And Michael says, honey, don't worry.
- 1:11:41I'll clean up the doodles.
- 1:11:43And so Michael cleans up the doodles.
- 1:11:44He does it several times a day because, you know, Michael loves his wife.
- 1:11:49Now this goes on for period of a week or so.
- 1:11:51And finally Michael says, that's it.
- 1:11:53He said, we're taking this dog to disciplinary school.
- 1:11:55So Michael pays the school.
- 1:11:57takes the little poopsie to school, teach the dog how to doodle outside.
- 1:12:01Well, the dog flunks.
- 1:12:02And so they give the dog back to Michael, and he said, honey, I love you.
- 1:12:07You know that if that dog doodles again in this house, it's over.
- 1:12:10And so they leave for church.
- 1:12:12Come back from church, there's Poopsy.
- 1:12:15And there's doodles again.
- 1:12:16And Michael has had enough.
- 1:12:19And Michael loses his cool.
- 1:12:20He says, no more doodles.
- 1:12:22And he says he goes and grabs the dog by the collar.
- 1:12:25He takes the dog outside, grabs the shovel, and he starts digging.
- 1:12:28And he digs and he digs and he digs.
- 1:12:30And then he puts the Poopsy in the hole, covers up the hole, and he says, that's it.
- 1:12:34What do think the neighbors are going to do to Michael?
- 1:12:38They're going to call the police.
- 1:12:40Why?
- 1:12:40Why are they going to call the police, everybody?
- 1:12:42Because you don't bury living things.
- 1:12:48Now, listen, we don't bury living things.
- 1:12:51Is that right, Michael?
- 1:12:52That's correct.
- 1:12:53Except in religion.
- 1:12:57Oh no, religion we do.
- 1:12:59You know what we tell people?
- 1:13:00Let's talk about it.
- 1:13:02Well, you know, Michael, you said that prayer, you were born again, brand new Christian, baby in Christ.
- 1:13:06By the way, in about three weeks, we're gonna bury you.
- 1:13:10We don't bury living things, we bury dead things.
- 1:13:13But in religion, we take things that we're told they're living, we're told they're born again, we're told they're a baby in Christ, and we bury the baby.
- 1:13:22The only people that get buried in the word of God are people that are dead in sin.
- 1:13:27When you're dead in sin, you get buried.
- 1:13:29uh We only bury people that are dead.
- 1:13:32They're lost.
- 1:13:33We don't bury living things.
- 1:13:35If you buried a living dog, you go to jail.
- 1:13:38What happens if we bury living souls?
- 1:13:44There's a day of reckoning coming.
- 1:13:47Brethren, we gotta follow what the Bible says.
- 1:13:49You can't just make it up.
- 1:13:51Okay, what is the biblical order?
- 1:13:53The biblical order's important.
- 1:13:55No ye not, don't you know, that so many of us have been baptized into Jesus Christ, were baptized into his death.
- 1:14:01We die, the old man dies, the sinner dies, therefore we're buried.
- 1:14:06What do we do with the dead sinner?
- 1:14:07We bury the dead sinner, we bury them, all right?
- 1:14:10So we bury poopsie, we bury the dead things, not the living things, the dead things, right?
- 1:14:15Then notice what it says, they're like as Christ was raised, now he weighs up.
- 1:14:19Just like Jesus rose from the dead, we rise up and we're a new creature.
- 1:14:23What does that say in verse five?
- 1:14:25life and we've been planted together in the likeness of his death so we die like Jesus died so then shall we be planted in the likeness of his resurrection it's a beautiful text
- 1:14:36it's teaching us the order death burial resurrection it works in life we don't bury living people we don't bury living animals and we should not be burying people alive spiritually
- 1:14:50we bury dead people spiritually dead in their sins
- 1:14:55Now, with that being said, Michael, does the Bible describe the one baptism as a burial in water?
- 1:15:02Should we be buried, Michael?
- 1:15:03Is that what the Bible says?
- 1:15:05Yes, Michael.
- 1:15:06Where do we get the benefits of the death of Jesus?
- 1:15:08What must we do?
- 1:15:08We must be what?
- 1:15:11We must be buried and baptized, right?
- 1:15:13Okay, Michael, if you are baptized the way the Bible says, could you be wrong?
- 1:15:17No.
- 1:15:17No, Michael, if you are not baptized the way the Bible says, could you be wrong?
- 1:15:23Now let's stop there and analyze that.
- 1:15:25So let's make sure everybody understands where we are.
- 1:15:28If you are baptized the way the Bible says, you're right.
- 1:15:31You can be right.
- 1:15:32But if you're not doing it the way the Bible, you do it your own way, then you could be wrong.
- 1:15:38So what's my job right now?
- 1:15:39My job as a teacher is to find out, is Michael done what the Bible says?
- 1:15:45That's up to Michael and God, it's not me.
- 1:15:48I'm just here to help Michael determine, have you done what the Bible, is your baptism according to what the Bible says?
- 1:15:55Now in order to do that, I just ask questions.
- 1:15:57It's up to him and God, and that's not up to me.
- 1:16:00I'm not the judge.
- 1:16:01All right, here it is.
- 1:16:02Michael, do you want to take a chance on missing heaven?
- 1:16:05No, I don't either.
- 1:16:07Michael, do you believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God?
- 1:16:10Michael, as we have seen, Jesus commands repentance.
- 1:16:13Are you willing to start making the changes in your life that Jesus commands and live for God?
- 1:16:18Yes.
- 1:16:18OK.
- 1:16:19I believe that.
- 1:16:20believe that.
- 1:16:21And Michael, have you been baptized into Christ for the remission of your sins?
- 1:16:26You know what you're going to tell me every time?
- 1:16:29Yes.
- 1:16:29Yes.
- 1:16:30He's going to say yes.
- 1:16:30Every time he's going to say yes.
- 1:16:32You know why?
- 1:16:33Why does he say yes?
- 1:16:34Anybody know Justin?
- 1:16:35Why would he say yes?
- 1:16:37because he feels that way, because he's Red Axe 238, that's what the Bible teaches, that must be what I did, but what's the problem?
- 1:16:44Anybody understand the conflict here?
- 1:16:46What's the problem?
- 1:16:48He hasn't been.
- 1:16:49How do I know that?
- 1:16:50Remember those answers he gave me before we started?
- 1:16:54Three weeks after.
- 1:16:55Yeah, yeah, he was saved.
- 1:16:57He was saved three weeks before his baptism.
- 1:17:00So I already know that's not true.
- 1:17:02I already know he's got a conflict here.
- 1:17:04Now, there's a conflict right now.
- 1:17:07So what do do with it?
- 1:17:08I just let Michael keep answering questions.
- 1:17:10He'll see it.
- 1:17:10I don't have to tell him.
- 1:17:11oh Michael, oh if you were taught you had your sins forgiven before the baptism when you said that prayer and they said, Michael, your sins have been forgiven.
- 1:17:20You're a new Christian.
- 1:17:21You're a baby in Christ and congratulations.
- 1:17:24You remember that day?
- 1:17:26Yes, you do.
- 1:17:27Michael, if you were taught your sins were forgiven before the baptism, then can you go get baptized to have your sins forgiven?
- 1:17:33Does that make any sense?
- 1:17:36Now think about that.
- 1:17:36If you were taught your sins were forgiven before the baptism, can you then go get baptized to have your sins forgiven?
- 1:17:44No.
- 1:17:44No, you can't because you were told they were forgiven before.
- 1:17:48So in order for them to be forgiven, you've got to know you still have them.
- 1:17:51But you don't even know you have them because you were told they were gone when you said the prayer.
- 1:17:56I am too.
- 1:17:58Right?
- 1:17:58No, it's confusing.
- 1:17:59So normally at this point, he's going to look at you and that don't make sense.
- 1:18:03And he's right.
- 1:18:04It is confusing.
- 1:18:05How can I be baptized to have my sins forgiven?
- 1:18:10But they told me when I said my prayer, the sins were forgiven.
- 1:18:13So it doesn't make sense.
- 1:18:14Things aren't adding up right now.
- 1:18:16And he knows that.
- 1:18:17Now I just have to help him make application.
- 1:18:19Here he is.
- 1:18:20Watch.
- 1:18:21Michael, if you were taught you were saved before the baptism, could you then go get baptized to be saved?
- 1:18:30Don't answer that.
- 1:18:31Let me ask you.
- 1:18:32Michael, have you ever been taught this before about baptism?
- 1:18:35Have you ever seen this before?
- 1:18:37Has anybody ever taught you this before?
- 1:18:38No.
- 1:18:39No.
- 1:18:42Michael, since you were never taught this, can you, in order to obey the truth about baptism, does someone have to teach you the truth about baptism?
- 1:18:52But you were never taught this.
- 1:18:55So these are just questions.
- 1:18:56I'm not making any statements.
- 1:18:58This is important.
- 1:18:59Do not make statements.
- 1:19:01It's up to Michael.
- 1:19:02Michael, to be baptized properly, does someone have to teach you properly?
- 1:19:07I would think so.
- 1:19:08And Michael, can you be taught the wrong thing and obey the right thing?
- 1:19:14No.
- 1:19:15Can you be taught the wrong thing and then obey the right thing?
- 1:19:19In order to obey the right thing, someone has to teach you right.
- 1:19:21Correct.
- 1:19:22But you weren't taught that.
- 1:19:22No.
- 1:19:24Can you accidentally be baptized?
- 1:19:26No.
- 1:19:27So in order to be baptized in the truth, someone has to teach you the truth.
- 1:19:30You weren't taught the truth, and obedience is not an accident.
- 1:19:34So I'm making all these statements to help Michael what?
- 1:19:37Think.
- 1:19:38So the real question is on the screen.
- 1:19:40It's Michael, if you were saved before the baptism, could you then go get baptized to be saved?
- 1:19:48Could you do that?
- 1:19:49No.
- 1:19:51So now Michael begins to realize, wait a minute.
- 1:19:55I was never taught any of this.
- 1:19:57Brethren, can you be baptized accidentally?
- 1:20:00So someone has to teach you the truth.
- 1:20:03Is it possible that we have
- 1:20:04people in this world who were not taught the truth about baptism, but they think they were baptized correctly, but no one ever taught them.
- 1:20:12And that is exactly where we are in this world.
- 1:20:15People who were not taught the truth, they didn't know the truth.
- 1:20:19They're convinced, but no one ever taught them this.
- 1:20:22And you can't be accidentally baptized.
- 1:20:24Now Michael realizes this.
- 1:20:25He realizes this is scary.
- 1:20:28Listen, I didn't know any of this.
- 1:20:29So let's just ask this question.
- 1:20:31John 14, 15, the Bible says, if you love me, you'll keep my commandments, Michael.
- 1:20:36Michael, if we really love Jesus, will we want to obey him?
- 1:20:40Michael, do you love him?
- 1:20:42Michael, do you want to obey him?
- 1:20:44Me too.
- 1:20:45And Michael, since Jesus wants you to be baptized, and now that you understand the importance of being baptized right now, wouldn't it please Jesus for you to be baptized
- 1:20:55right now?
- 1:20:56Yes, sir.
- 1:20:56It would.
- 1:20:5790 % of the people I study with are baptized right there.
- 1:21:01And the reason is they were never taught.
- 1:21:03No one ever taught them the truth.
- 1:21:05They did not know any of this.
- 1:21:07I cannot tell you how important it is that someone teaches you the truth.
- 1:21:12You're not gonna stumble on it by accident.
- 1:21:14And if someone misled you, and they may be sincere, I'm not questioning these people.
- 1:21:20But the point is that we've gotta do it the way the Bible teaches it.
- 1:21:24If I do what this book says, I know I'm right with God.
- 1:21:28If I do not do what this book says, I could be wrong, and I'm not gonna take that chance.
- 1:21:34I will not take it.
- 1:21:35And I will do exactly what this book says.
- 1:21:37And I've used a lot of examples tonight, but that's what a Bible study does.
- 1:21:41And so it helps a person.
- 1:21:44look inside themselves and ask difficult questions.
- 1:21:48And you do it with love.
- 1:21:49I love Michael.
- 1:21:50I'm not trying to hurt him in any way.
- 1:21:52I love him enough where I would sit down, ask those questions and let him come to an understanding.
- 1:21:59I am not the judge.
- 1:22:00It's not up to me to tell Michael if he's going to heaven or hell.
- 1:22:03That's between him and God.
- 1:22:05But Michael is smart enough to read his Bible and know the truth.
- 1:22:08All right.
- 1:22:10So we're going to finish that.
- 1:22:11Thank you, Michael.
- 1:22:11You're, you're, you're ready to be baptized.
- 1:22:14Anybody, if you want to see Michael baptized raise your hand.
- 1:22:18Would you like to do it?
- 1:22:19You all take the left side, I'll take the right side.
- 1:22:21I think it would take more than just me.
- 1:22:24All right brother thank you very much.
- 1:22:26You may leave.
- 1:22:28Shelly is waiting.
- 1:22:29Shelly's waiting.
- 1:22:30She wants poopsie.
- 1:22:31Go give her poopsie.
- 1:22:33Do you have a dog Shelly?
- 1:22:35We have Django.
- 1:22:36Django.
- 1:22:37Okay good.
- 1:22:37Is it a doodling dog?
- 1:22:39It's a pig.
- 1:22:40Okay.
- 1:22:41boy.
- 1:22:42Poodles or poodles.
- 1:22:42All right.
- 1:22:43Very good.
- 1:22:44All right, let's go to the next lesson.
- 1:22:46Aaron, would you bring up lesson number five?
- 1:22:49We're going to abbreviate the lesson tonight, but I do want to cover some important points.
- 1:22:55So evangelism is not a theory, and it cannot stay in the classroom.
- 1:23:01The classroom is what we call sterile environment, meaning that I control the temperature, I control the context, and it's easy to make it look simple.
- 1:23:14when we don't have the interference of the world.
- 1:23:16What I want to do now is take the world and infuse it into evangelism.
- 1:23:20I want you to deal with the real world.
- 1:23:23All right, so we're going to go out into the real world and they're going to ask questions.
- 1:23:27And they're going ask a lot of questions.
- 1:23:29And oh it scares Christians.
- 1:23:31Like, I don't know the answers.
- 1:23:32I don't know what I'm going to say.
- 1:23:34Well, let's talk about that.
- 1:23:36Lesson number one in our principles, of the seven principles, is what?
- 1:23:40What should we do with all questions?
- 1:23:43defer them.
- 1:23:43We do not answer questions.
- 1:23:45And so if you're in a Bible study and someone says, well, I want to know about the thousand year reign of Christ.
- 1:23:50That's a great question.
- 1:23:51I want you to open your back to the Bible and I want you to write that question down.
- 1:23:55We'll get to it later.
- 1:23:56So I'm not there to play Bible trivia.
- 1:23:59I'm not there to answer all the questions.
- 1:24:01I am not there to try to prove I know more Bible than they do.
- 1:24:05So it's very, very important that we understand, we need to understand that you don't have to
- 1:24:13all the answers.
- 1:24:15Okay, if someone has to know all the answers, then none of us are qualified, because I don't know all the answers.
- 1:24:21What we do need to know is the authority of Christ, the Church of Christ, the salvation of Christ.
- 1:24:26Keep it simple, all right?
- 1:24:28Keep it real.
- 1:24:29Do not bury yourself into theological concepts, all right?
- 1:24:34So you don't need to be afraid.
- 1:24:35No one in this audience needs to be afraid.
- 1:24:38Just use the tool that God gave you.
- 1:24:42right.
- 1:24:42Now, 1 Corinthians, chapter 9, verses 19 through 23.
- 1:24:45I have.
- 1:24:46made all things to all men that I might be, all men save some.
- 1:24:51Paul's talking about how he approaches people.
- 1:24:53He said, when I'm with the Jews, I'll use the custom of the Jews.
- 1:24:57When I'm with the Gentiles, I use the custom of the Gentiles.
- 1:25:00When I'm with the Greeks, I use the custom of the Greeks.
- 1:25:02When I'm with the Romans, I use the custom of the Romans.
- 1:25:05In other words, I adapt.
- 1:25:07And so when it comes to Bible studies, we have to adapt.
- 1:25:09What does that mean?
- 1:25:11Not everyone is ready for back to the Bible.
- 1:25:14Because we have people that don't believe in God.
- 1:25:16And if they don't believe in God, I'm going to change out my lure.
- 1:25:19I want to use believe the Bible.
- 1:25:21Some people are not ready for a Bible study.
- 1:25:24And so I'm going to spend a little bit more time building relationships.
- 1:25:27So we're going to treat people differently based upon where they're at.
- 1:25:31That's important to understand.
- 1:25:34We're going to adapt.
- 1:25:37Now, Callie Hudson walks in the church building.
- 1:25:40She sits down.
- 1:25:41I've never met her.
- 1:25:42She sits right next to Clifton, must be Clifton's girlfriend.
- 1:25:46Clifton is a faithful member of the church.
- 1:25:48We get to know Callie.
- 1:25:49She is a wonderful young lady.
- 1:25:52And over a period of time, after she keeps coming, Clifton comes to me and says, Rob, he said, I really would like your help.
- 1:25:58I would like your help to convert Callie.
- 1:26:01I said, Clifton, I'd be glad to help you.
- 1:26:03I said, let's invite Callie over to the house.
- 1:26:05Let's have a game night.
- 1:26:06And let's just talk a little bit.
- 1:26:07And I think the Bible study will come.
- 1:26:10That was my plan.
- 1:26:11So we put this plan together before the game night.
- 1:26:15He calls me.
- 1:26:16He's frantic.
- 1:26:17He said, Rob, have you heard the news?
- 1:26:19I said, what news?
- 1:26:20I could tell he's frantic on the phone.
- 1:26:22He said, Rob, says, Calhoun's dad just had a heart attack.
- 1:26:27I said, Clifton, I'm sorry.
- 1:26:28I said, what hospital?
- 1:26:29I'll be right there.
- 1:26:30He said, Rob, he didn't make it, Rob.
- 1:26:33So at that point, she's lost her dad.
- 1:26:35It's a sudden passing.
- 1:26:37It's a tragic, it's trauma.
- 1:26:39No one expects this to happen when you're 20 years old.
- 1:26:43And so I know that Callie's going to need a lot of love.
- 1:26:46So the church wraps their arms around Callie.
- 1:26:48We send the cards.
- 1:26:49We send the flowers.
- 1:26:50We go out of our way to endear ourselves to this young couple, especially Callie.
- 1:26:57A year passes by, and I realize it's time.
- 1:27:01And so we again have that game night.
- 1:27:03to the house, Callie starts to study.
- 1:27:05She does excellent.
- 1:27:06She knows all the answers.
- 1:27:08She could have taught me book one.
- 1:27:10She's been listening to all the sermons.
- 1:27:11She's very intelligent, couldn't have gone better.
- 1:27:15So we finished book number one.
- 1:27:16OK, we have her over next week.
- 1:27:18We have another meal.
- 1:27:19We do book two.
- 1:27:20Callie's going through the answers.
- 1:27:22Once again, she gets them all right.
- 1:27:23fact, when it came to the Lord's Supper, I asked a question.
- 1:27:27I said, Callie, do these passages?
- 1:27:30Do they cause you to have any questions?
- 1:27:32Well, Mr.
- 1:27:32Rob, I know my church doesn't do the Lord's Supper like the Bible says, but you know, the Bible says the first day of the week and I think that's when we need to do it.
- 1:27:41So, okay, she accepts it.
- 1:27:42She doesn't argue with it.
- 1:27:43And so I can see that she's getting the concept.
- 1:27:46She's not arguing with the Bible because there's some conflicts and she might look back at her home church and says, you know, they just do it monthly there or quarterly there.
- 1:27:54so Callie accepts it.
- 1:27:56So now we're in the third study.
- 1:27:57She's sitting across the table.
- 1:28:00She's going to ask.
- 1:28:03So let me stop.
- 1:28:04One of the traits or characteristics of an evangelist is that you need to anticipate the questions.
- 1:28:12What's she going to ask, Michael?
- 1:28:14What's she going to ask me?
- 1:28:16Where's my dad?
- 1:28:17That's right.
- 1:28:19Where's my dad?
- 1:28:20You know it's coming.
- 1:28:22I mean, she's 20 years old.
- 1:28:23She's lost her dad.
- 1:28:24She's going to ask.
- 1:28:25So I know I'm sitting across the table, and I'm going to get that question, so I'm prepared for it.
- 1:28:31I've thought about this.
- 1:28:32I've spent a year thinking about it.
- 1:28:34In fact, the very night her father passed away, I'm thinking about it.
- 1:28:37Because I know that if I don't have a prepared answer for this, my words could either hurt or heal.
- 1:28:43They can either help or...
- 1:28:46are hindered.
- 1:28:47And so at this point, it's coming.
- 1:28:50So we're going through this Bible study, right, and she's accepting what the Bible says.
- 1:28:54On sin, she's all in, right?
- 1:28:56She couldn't be any more clear and understanding.
- 1:29:01We go through belief, she's there.
- 1:29:03Repentance, she's there.
- 1:29:04Confession, she's there.
- 1:29:05We go through baptism.
- 1:29:09She gets it.
- 1:29:13Her eyes filled with tears.
- 1:29:17They drip down her face.
- 1:29:22They fell on the table.
- 1:29:24They pulled up.
- 1:29:26And she lays her head on the table and she just falls.
- 1:29:32She knows.
- 1:29:35My wife put her arm around her and held her and I just let her cry.
- 1:29:41One of the men that I consulted with before I did this Bible study was Keith Mosher.
- 1:29:46I said, over to Mosher, I need help.
- 1:29:48I know what's coming.
- 1:29:50What do I do?
- 1:29:50He says, when she cries, let her cry, Rob.
- 1:29:53Don't stop her.
- 1:29:55He says, you can't stop this.
- 1:29:57You got to let her cry.
- 1:29:58I reached out to a lot of preachers.
- 1:30:00What am I going to do?
- 1:30:01Because it's going to come.
- 1:30:05tears started to clear up.
- 1:30:07Callie picked her head off the table, looked at me and I said, Callie, said, I know why you're crying.
- 1:30:13I said, you're worried about your dad, aren't you?
- 1:30:15And she said, Mr.
- 1:30:16Rob, what about my dad, Mr.
- 1:30:18Rob, what's going to happen to him?
- 1:30:19I said, Mr.
- 1:30:20Callie, said, you know what, I'm not the judge.
- 1:30:22I don't determine those things.
- 1:30:25I said, Callie, I can help you.
- 1:30:27And she said, what do mean?
- 1:30:28I said, well, I just need to know more about your dad.
- 1:30:31I said, tell me about your dad.
- 1:30:32Was he a good man?
- 1:30:33Well, yes, Mr.
- 1:30:34Rob, he was a good man.
- 1:30:35I said, well, tell me, what does that mean?
- 1:30:37She tells me some stories about her dad.
- 1:30:39Now she's smiling.
- 1:30:40That's what I wanted.
- 1:30:42I said, Cali, was your dad a religious man?
- 1:30:44Did he believe in?
- 1:30:44yes, Rob, he believed in God.
- 1:30:46I said, well, great, Cali.
- 1:30:47I said, Cali, was your dad a hardworking man, an honest man?
- 1:30:51Yes, Mr.
- 1:30:52Rob.
- 1:30:52I said, well, tell me.
- 1:30:55Hey, Cali, did anybody ever teach your dad what I just taught you?
- 1:31:00She said, I don't know Mr.
- 1:31:01Rob.
- 1:31:01I said, okay.
- 1:31:03I said, Kelly, if your dad could come back right now and he could talk to you and you could listen to his words, Kelly, would your dad to tell you to do what the Bible says?
- 1:31:13She said, well, Mr.
- 1:31:14Rob, my dad would always tell me to do what the Bible says.
- 1:31:16I said, I believe that.
- 1:31:18I said, Kelly, I'll make a promise to you at this table.
- 1:31:22I will ask you to do no more or no less than what the Bible says.
- 1:31:26And I think if your dad would want you to do what the Bible says, you probably should do that.
- 1:31:33Callie looked at me and she said, Mr.
- 1:31:34Rob, the Bible says I need to be baptized.
- 1:31:36I said, that's what the Bible says.
- 1:31:38I said, what do you want to do, Callie?
- 1:31:39She says, I need to be baptized, Rob.
- 1:31:41And I said, good.
- 1:31:42I said, let's go.
- 1:31:43So we got out of the table.
- 1:31:44We started walking to the Baptist tree.
- 1:31:46We got halfway there.
- 1:31:47She turned around and walked back.
- 1:31:48She sat around the table.
- 1:31:50I said, Callie, everything OK?
- 1:31:52She says, Mr.
- 1:31:52Rob, she says, you know what?
- 1:31:54I've decided to wait on my brother.
- 1:31:56You know, my brother's been coming, Mr.
- 1:31:58Rob.
- 1:31:58And I think I need to wait on my brother.
- 1:32:00I said, well, Callie, I said, uh I wish every brother had a sister like you.
- 1:32:05And he said, well, why is that, Mr.
- 1:32:06Bob?
- 1:32:06I said, because you want him to become a Christian.
- 1:32:08I said, every brother needs a sister just like you.
- 1:32:11And she said, well, I want him to be a Christian too.
- 1:32:14I said, me too.
- 1:32:15I said, Callie, how are you going to get your brother to become a Christian?
- 1:32:20Remember, I just ask questions.
- 1:32:22I don't make statements.
- 1:32:24She said, well, Mr.
- 1:32:25Rob, I was thinking we'd use these little booklets.
- 1:32:27I said, well, that sounds good.
- 1:32:29And we'd sit down and do these Bibles.
- 1:32:30I think that's a good approach.
- 1:32:32And Callie, when do you want him to book them?
- 1:32:35Well, Mr.
- 1:32:35Rob, when we finished about.
- 1:32:39Mr.
- 1:32:39Robert, you tried to tell me something.
- 1:32:41I said, well, no, I'm just asking questions, Callie.
- 1:32:44When do you want him to become a Christian?
- 1:32:45When we finished the Bible study, Mr.
- 1:32:47Rob.
- 1:32:47You don't want him to She said, no, Mr.
- 1:32:51Rob.
- 1:32:52I said, no, Callie, most people don't travel down roads.
- 1:32:54Other people don't travel down first.
- 1:32:56Someone has to be the first.
- 1:32:59I said, would it be OK if you showed him the way?
- 1:33:03She said, Mr.
- 1:33:04Rob, I need to be baptized.
- 1:33:05I said, I know, Callie.
- 1:33:07I said, let's do it right now.
- 1:33:10and we took her to the baptistry and she was baptized.
- 1:33:13Isn't it interesting how just asking simple questions, people can reason through difficult situations.
- 1:33:20Here's some things that took me a lifetime to learn.
- 1:33:22I'm 50 years old, it feels like a lifetime.
- 1:33:27Stop telling people what to do.
- 1:33:29Brother, I am not here to tell you what to do.
- 1:33:31I'm here to ask questions, read the Bible, and you can figure it out.
- 1:33:35I really believe in this audience tonight, if people will be honest, read their Bibles, and reason, you'll come to the truth.
- 1:33:42You don't need me to tell you.
- 1:33:44You're smart.
- 1:33:46Callie's smart.
- 1:33:46She doesn't need me to tell her what to do.
- 1:33:48She knows what the Bible says.
- 1:33:50And you know, I'm not the first person who has said it like this.
- 1:33:54Because in Luke chapter 16, verse number 19, there was a rich man.
- 1:34:00And he fared sumptuously every day.
- 1:34:02And the Bible said there was a beggar.
- 1:34:04And he sat at the gate full of swords, and desiring to be fed from the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table below where the dog came and licked his swords.
- 1:34:13And the Bible says the beggar died, and he was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom, and the rich man died.
- 1:34:20And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments.
- 1:34:24And he Abraham fall off, and he says, Father Abraham, I've got five brethren.
- 1:34:28Father Abraham, send me back, that I may testify to them, lest they come into this place of torment.
- 1:34:34Abraham said, son, they have Moses and the prophets.
- 1:34:38Let them hear them.
- 1:34:39He said, but Father Abraham, they won't listen.
- 1:34:42If one were wise from the dead, they would repent.
- 1:34:48So neither a foot would rise from the dead, they repent.
- 1:34:53I'm wondering right now if your mother could come back and talk to you.
- 1:35:01Say, honey, what would she tell you to do?
- 1:35:06Because I know what she would tell you to do.
- 1:35:09I don't need to know your mother, but I know what she'd tell you to do.
- 1:35:12I know what your grandmother would tell you.
- 1:35:14I know what your grandfather would tell you.
- 1:35:16I know what your son would tell you.
- 1:35:18Because I know that the message coming from the grave, I know exactly what they would tell you to do.
- 1:35:23They would say, you do what the Bible says.
- 1:35:27Brethren, everybody on the other side of eternity wants you to do what the Bible says.
- 1:35:33Everybody believes in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 1:35:36I don't have to judge them.
- 1:35:38It's not my job to tell you where they're at.
- 1:35:40But I know what they tell you to do, don't you, Michael?
- 1:35:43They tell you the truth.
- 1:35:45And that's all I want is the truth.
- 1:35:48Tell me the truth.
- 1:35:53This is Chandler.
- 1:35:56This is her brother.
- 1:36:00And Callie went home and she did something that I should have anticipated.
- 1:36:04And I didn't.
- 1:36:06And I anticipate it now, but I didn't then.
- 1:36:09Mama, I need to tell you what I did.
- 1:36:11What did you do, honey?
- 1:36:12Well, mama, I've been going.
- 1:36:13church you know over at Willette with my boyfriend Clifton.
- 1:36:16Yes honey I've been doing these Bible studies with Mr.
- 1:36:18Rob.
- 1:36:19Who's Mr.
- 1:36:19Rob?
- 1:36:20Well it's the preacher down there.
- 1:36:21kind of Bible studies honey?
- 1:36:23Well I just wanted to know more about what they believe.
- 1:36:26Mama and I learned that I needed to be baptized.
- 1:36:28I did what?
- 1:36:30Mama, the Bible says, that believes and is baptized shall be saved.
- 1:36:33And I didn't know that, Mama.
- 1:36:35And Mama, I want to show you what the Bible says.
- 1:36:37What do you mean, buddy?
- 1:36:38Well, let's just read it together.
- 1:36:39I don't want to read that.
- 1:36:41But Mama, says, he that believes and is baptized shall be saved.
- 1:36:44I didn't know that.
- 1:36:45I've never done that.
- 1:36:46And I was baptized.
- 1:36:47were what?
- 1:36:49I was baptized because the Bible says, honey, you know we don't believe that.
- 1:36:52But Mama, says it right here in the Bible, Mama.
- 1:36:55But honey, you know that our family doesn't believe like that.
- 1:36:58just wanted to do what the Bible says.
- 1:37:00Honey, how dare you go behind my back like that.
- 1:37:02But mom, I just wanted to do what the Bible says.
- 1:37:04Honey, how dare you dishonor this family like that.
- 1:37:09It's over.
- 1:37:12Clifton says she just collapsed, rolled up into a ball, and she sobbed.
- 1:37:18He calls me.
- 1:37:20Rob, hey, Clifton.
- 1:37:21It's a great day, isn't it?
- 1:37:24He said, He says she went home and told mama.
- 1:37:28I said, what do mean?
- 1:37:29Her mom was upset, Rob.
- 1:37:31I said, what do mean she's upset?
- 1:37:32She says they don't believe like this.
- 1:37:34I said, what do you mean?
- 1:37:36And he explains the situation.
- 1:37:38He said, Rob, I don't know what to do.
- 1:37:40Mom's upset.
- 1:37:41She's upset now.
- 1:37:42What are we going to do?
- 1:37:43And I said,
- 1:37:45I don't know.
- 1:37:48I said, I don't know.
- 1:37:49I said, I cannot believe that this has happened.
- 1:37:55I said, Clifton, give me some time.
- 1:37:57I need to think.
- 1:37:58So I hung up the phone, and I decided that I needed to reach out to the wisest people I knew.
- 1:38:04How do you handle this?
- 1:38:05And so I reached out.
- 1:38:06I made phone calls.
- 1:38:07And I finally found an elder that I thought would help me.
- 1:38:11And his name's Hugh Wayne Clark, one of the wisest men I've ever met.
- 1:38:14And he said, Rob, says, here's what needs to happen.
- 1:38:16He says, you need me.
- 1:38:20and Joe to have them in our home and we'll help them.
- 1:38:23And you stay at Bible, I was at Bible camp that day.
- 1:38:26You stay at Bible camp and you teach the children, I'm an elder, I'll do my job.
- 1:38:31And so sure enough, he has them over to the house and she's at the house and she's eating together and she finally start telling Hugh Wayne about what's going on.
- 1:38:40It's a very difficult discussion.
- 1:38:42She tells about how her mama was upset with her and finally after that discussion.
- 1:38:50He went and says, Callie, if I was your mother and you came home and told me what you just told me, I'd be upset too.
- 1:38:58What do you mean Mr.
- 1:39:00Hugh Wayne?
- 1:39:00Do you think I did the wrong thing?
- 1:39:01I didn't say that.
- 1:39:02Callie, has anybody ever taught your mother what, anybody ever taught your mother what you were taught?
- 1:39:08Did she know what you knew?
- 1:39:09Well no Mr.
- 1:39:10Hugh Wayne, one ever taught me that.
- 1:39:12No, I've never taught my mother.
- 1:39:13So your mother did not know what you know, no?
- 1:39:17So you can understand when you started telling your mother about this, she's gonna get upset because no one's ever had a Bible study with your mother.
- 1:39:23No.
- 1:39:24Callie?
- 1:39:26If you're faithful to God, one day you're gonna lead your mother to Christ.
- 1:39:30One day, not today.
- 1:39:32Here's what needs to happen.
- 1:39:34Be faithful to God and understand that in about three weeks, your mother's gonna be this much less angry with you.
- 1:39:41You won't notice.
- 1:39:43And in about three months from now, she'll be this much less angry and you're gonna go shopping for shoes.
- 1:39:48And he says, how do you know that Mr.
- 1:39:50Hugh Wayne?
- 1:39:50Because your mother loves you, Callie, and she won't be angry forever.
- 1:39:55But you have to be faithful because one day if you're faithful, you'll lead your mother to Christ.
- 1:39:59If you give up, if you give up and turn back any hope your mother has of being a Christian is gone.
- 1:40:08You where she was the next Sunday?
- 1:40:10Sitting in the pew worshiping God.
- 1:40:11She never missed, but he's not there.
- 1:40:14Clifton is gone.
- 1:40:16And I said, Clifton, Kelly, where's Chandler?
- 1:40:20My mother forbid him to ever come back to this church.
- 1:40:22Mr.
- 1:40:23Rob, now what are we going to do?
- 1:40:25I said, I said, I'll tell you what.
- 1:40:28Callie, back on the evangelism table, there's these little booklets.
- 1:40:32And luckily, I have a second set.
- 1:40:34You took my first set.
- 1:40:36And so, and I want you to go grab three sets.
- 1:40:39And why do we need those, Mr.
- 1:40:41Rob?
- 1:40:41I said, because you're going to teach Chandler the gospel.
- 1:40:43Me, Mr.
- 1:40:44Rob?
- 1:40:44Mr.
- 1:40:44Rob?
- 1:40:44I don't, I don't know.
- 1:40:45I'm just a new Christian, Mr.
- 1:40:47Rob.
- 1:40:47I can't teach him the gospel.
- 1:40:48I said, you can read, can't you?
- 1:40:51Go teach him the gospel.
- 1:40:55Know what she did?
- 1:40:56They taught him the gospel.
- 1:40:59It's amazing what happens when the members believe they don't need me.
- 1:41:05They don't need me.
- 1:41:06You can do it too.
- 1:41:09The members are doing it.
- 1:41:14I noticed sitting next to Chandler after a couple months was a young man and I noticed he was a, he's not a member.
- 1:41:21I walked up to Chandler, said, Chandler, who do you got with you today?
- 1:41:23Oh, that's my best friend Marshall.
- 1:41:25Really?
- 1:41:26Marshall, we're glad you're here.
- 1:41:27Been listening to your sermons, Mr.
- 1:41:29Rob, I like them.
- 1:41:30I said, what, really?
- 1:41:31He yeah, you like, I like the Bible preaching you do.
- 1:41:35I said, thanks, Marshall.
- 1:41:36I said, Chandler, have you taught Marshall the gospel?
- 1:41:39Me, Mr.
- 1:41:39Rob?
- 1:41:39Mr.
- 1:41:40Rob, I don't know what I'm talking about.
- 1:41:41I said, Chandler, back on the evangelism table, there's these little booklets.
- 1:41:45They're called Back to the Bible.
- 1:41:46I want you to grab two sets and teach Marshall the gospel.
- 1:41:49Mr.
- 1:41:50Rob, I just became a Christian.
- 1:41:51I said, I know, but you can read.
- 1:41:56What happens when our young people start evangelizing?
- 1:41:59They convert their friends.
- 1:42:03You want to keep the young people saved?
- 1:42:05Teach them how to be soul winners.
- 1:42:07Stop taking them to every Bible camp and every retreat and every youth rally and every youth day and celebrating themselves.
- 1:42:15Eventually, they're going to not be able to celebrate themselves.
- 1:42:18Eventually, we need to teach them how to do Bible studies.
- 1:42:20And we need to teach them how to reach the lost.
- 1:42:22And so when we teach them how to do that, I'm telling you what, I know where Chandler is on Sundays.
- 1:42:29He'll never forget what he did.
- 1:42:33By the way, I was in Jackson, Mississippi.
- 1:42:36Gary Hempton is the preacher.
- 1:42:38And I was about to get into the pulpit and start preaching.
- 1:42:40My phone rang.
- 1:42:41I looked down.
- 1:42:41It was Willette.
- 1:42:42That's I used to preach.
- 1:42:43I had to answer it.
- 1:42:44was an emergency.
- 1:42:46Sunday morning, I kneeled down.
- 1:42:48said, hello?
- 1:42:49Bob, this is Jack.
- 1:42:50I said, Jack, what's going on?
- 1:42:51He said, Rob, you'll never guess who just walked through the doors.
- 1:42:57It's their mother, Rob.
- 1:42:59She's here.
- 1:43:02and her son baptized her into Christ for the remission of her sins.
- 1:43:07Now that's the power of the gospel.
- 1:43:12You're going to experience a lot of questions in Bible studies.
- 1:43:15I wish I had time to run through all the questions that I could possibly think of, and I will do that at the Memphis School of Preaching, but I can't do it here tonight.
- 1:43:24So if you want to come back in May to the school, I'm going to answer all of them.
- 1:43:27But I am going to deal with some big ones, all right?
- 1:43:30What if they're living together?
- 1:43:32What do do if they're living together?
- 1:43:33And so uh that was the case with Amy and Evan.
- 1:43:36I told you Sunday that they walked out of the house.
- 1:43:39uh I thought we're going to the cross.
- 1:43:41Then Satan fired an arrow right through them and a phone rang.
- 1:43:46This is after the second study.
- 1:43:47It was Sheila.
- 1:43:48And Sheila said, Rob?
- 1:43:50I said, yes, Sheila?
- 1:43:51Rob, are Amy and Evan gone?
- 1:43:53I said, yes, they just walked out the door.
- 1:43:55Rob, we got to talk.
- 1:43:58I said, what's going on, Sheila?
- 1:43:59Oh, I raised a boy better than this, Rob.
- 1:44:02I said, well, Sheila, what's going on?
- 1:44:04Oh, God, promise me you won't tell anybody.
- 1:44:06I said, well, I don't know what we're talking about.
- 1:44:08I said, what are we talking about?
- 1:44:10Sheila, oh, Rob.
- 1:44:14Oh, Bob, Evan bought a house in Lafayette.
- 1:44:16I said, I know you're proud of him.
- 1:44:17Rob, listen to me.
- 1:44:19Rob, Amy's moved in, they're living together.
- 1:44:23That's not good.
- 1:44:25No, Rob, I knew since you were doing these Bible studies, you probably needed to know that.
- 1:44:29I said, yes, that's important information.
- 1:44:32Rob, what are you gonna do about it?
- 1:44:34What do mean?
- 1:44:35What am I doing?
- 1:44:35He's your son.
- 1:44:38And so I did not say that.
- 1:44:42I did not say that.
- 1:44:43I thought it, but I didn't say it.
- 1:44:45And I said, tell you what.
- 1:44:46said, said, Nicole and I are going to talk about it.
- 1:44:49Well, don't tell them that I told you.
- 1:44:51I said, I won't tell them.
- 1:44:53And so I got off the phone, and Nicole and I looked at each other.
- 1:44:56And I said, Nicole, what are we going to do?
- 1:44:57She says, you're going to do what you always do, have a Bible study.
- 1:45:01But then I solved every problem.
- 1:45:03By the way, Larry Aykuff, let me quote him, all church problems are solved in the Baptist tree.
- 1:45:08You want to solve a church problem?
- 1:45:10You do a Bible study.
- 1:45:12That's where you solve it.
- 1:45:13So I just, came over to the house for the third study.
- 1:45:15We sat around the table.
- 1:45:16They did the study.
- 1:45:17And we got to Act 238.
- 1:45:20And I said, Amy and Evan, the Bible says, what does it say to do?
- 1:45:23They said, repent.
- 1:45:23I said, put it in the blank.
- 1:45:26Hannah, bring the cookies.
- 1:45:28And she said, yes, Dad.
- 1:45:30She brought the cookies.
- 1:45:31I said, we're done today.
- 1:45:33And they said, Mr.
- 1:45:34Robbins says to be baptized.
- 1:45:35I said, I know, but we're done.
- 1:45:37But Mr.
- 1:45:38Robbins says to be baptized.
- 1:45:39I said, I know, but we're finished with the study.
- 1:45:41But Mr.
- 1:45:41Robbins, I said, we're finished.
- 1:45:43by the way, before you leave, enjoy the cookies.
- 1:45:46I said, I do have a story I need to tell you.
- 1:45:49And one thing I learned about Jesus is he likes to tell parables to get them to see it.
- 1:45:55I'm going to tell my parable.
- 1:45:57It's the parable of oh Terry and Marlena Starks.
- 1:46:02And it's an actual couple that I met in Madisonville, Kentucky.
- 1:46:05They were living together.
- 1:46:07I told them about how we met them, how we studied the Bible, how she moved into our house for just a short period of time, how we married them, and now they're faithful Christians
- 1:46:15of the Madisonville Church of Christ.
- 1:46:16It's a long story, but I told the story.
- 1:46:18And when I finished the story, I said, by the way, guys, when you're ready to continue the study, just let me know.
- 1:46:23Call me.
- 1:46:25They walked out of the house.
- 1:46:26They got in their car.
- 1:46:27Amy looks over at Evan.
- 1:46:28She says, Evan, I think they know about us.
- 1:46:30The entire county knew about them.
- 1:46:32It's a small town.
- 1:46:33Nothing's a secret.
- 1:46:34And so any case, two weeks later, she calls me.
- 1:46:37Well, I can't
- 1:46:37like this anymore." I said, live like what?
- 1:46:39Rob, just can't do this anymore.
- 1:46:41I said, do what Amy?
- 1:46:42Oh Rob, you know I'm living with Evan.
- 1:46:45I said, oh.
- 1:46:47I said, okay.
- 1:46:48I said, Evan, said, Amy, where you going?
- 1:46:49She said, I'm gonna live with my grandmother.
- 1:46:51I said, that's a good choice.
- 1:46:52Rob, can you meet me at the building?
- 1:46:54Rob, I need to be baptized.
- 1:46:56I'll be right there, Amy.
- 1:46:59Good, because Evan will be right behind me.
- 1:47:02He was.
- 1:47:04And he has been ever since.
- 1:47:09Isn't it beautiful?
- 1:47:12Isn't it beautiful, Michael?
- 1:47:14That's the gospel.
- 1:47:17That's what the gospel does.
- 1:47:19You want to solve problems?
- 1:47:21Do it in your Bible study.
- 1:47:22You don't need to be a pop psychologist.
- 1:47:24You don't need to be a psychoanalyst.
- 1:47:26You don't have to be a therapist.
- 1:47:28What we need is apply the Bible.
- 1:47:30This book will solve almost every problem.
- 1:47:32If we just trust the power of this book and people are...
- 1:47:35We just ask questions and then let them hear the simplicity of gospel preaching.
- 1:47:40They'll see it.
- 1:47:43But if we don't teach them, they won't.
- 1:47:45If we're afraid, they won't.
- 1:47:46If we never teach them, they'll never see it.
- 1:47:50I'm gonna deal with one more question and then we're gonna be done for this evening.
- 1:47:54And I'll need about five more minutes.
- 1:47:55All right.
- 1:47:57So I'm sitting in the living room uh and Sharon Fisher's sitting there and she says, she says, Robin, my first marriage.
- 1:48:06The last thing I wanted to hear was a first marriage.
- 1:48:09And I said, ah
- 1:48:11And so she tells me about this first marriage.
- 1:48:13I don't know much about it, but she tells me a little bit about it.
- 1:48:16so I've got some questions.
- 1:48:20What do I do with that information?
- 1:48:22She's exposed that she has multiple marriages.
- 1:48:25I don't know much about it.
- 1:48:27I could stop at that point and have an inquisition.
- 1:48:30I could ask lots of questions.
- 1:48:32I could try to pin it down and find out the details.
- 1:48:35But I just met them.
- 1:48:36This is the first time they've ever been in my house.
- 1:48:38So what did I do?
- 1:48:39oh
- 1:48:40I practiced John 16-12.
- 1:48:42John 16-12 is a very important passage because it helps me understand how to approach people.
- 1:48:48And this is Jesus speaking to his disciples and he says something.
- 1:48:51says, I have many things to say to you, but you can't bear them now.
- 1:48:56What does that mean?
- 1:49:00What does that mean, brother?
- 1:49:01You're a second year student at Memphis.
- 1:49:02What does it mean?
- 1:49:03You can't handle it.
- 1:49:04That's right.
- 1:49:05That's right.
- 1:49:05You're not ready.
- 1:49:06You're not ready.
- 1:49:07So there's some things I need to teach you, but I can't teach you right now because you're not ready.
- 1:49:12So what do we need to do?
- 1:49:13We need to bring them to a point where they are ready.
- 1:49:16So I know that it's going to take time.
- 1:49:18I know that it's going to take us to some time.
- 1:49:20So Nicole and I spent a lot of time with Jimmy and Sharon.
- 1:49:23And we're also doing these Bible studies.
- 1:49:24We're going through them.
- 1:49:26But not every time we met them did we do a Bible study.
- 1:49:28Sometimes we just went to the classroom and cleaned the kindergarten class, because she's a kindergarten teacher.
- 1:49:33Sometimes we went to Latia's and ate a meal.
- 1:49:36Sometimes we didn't always have a Bible study.
- 1:49:39Why?
- 1:49:39Because I need time to build the relationship.
- 1:49:42And I also know that faith comes by.
- 1:49:45hearing and hearing by the word of God.
- 1:49:46We need time.
- 1:49:47And so I'm not going to rush into it.
- 1:49:49I'm going to give them time to digest all of this.
- 1:49:51All right?
- 1:49:51So we're going through this process, John 16, 12 process.
- 1:49:55oh But I know eventually we're going to have that third study.
- 1:49:58And I'm going to have to deal with sin.
- 1:50:01And I do.
- 1:50:02And it's on page, I think it's page three, back to the Bible, the red booklet.
- 1:50:05This is the question.
- 1:50:06All right, this is the first.
- 1:50:08And so we're sitting in that Bible study.
- 1:50:09I said, Jimmy and Sharon, let's read that verse.
- 1:50:11Know ye not?
- 1:50:12The unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God be
- 1:50:16I said Jimmy, do you know what a fornicator is?
- 1:50:19He said, yes.
- 1:50:20He says, yeah, that's wrong.
- 1:50:22I know what that is.
- 1:50:23said, you sure?
- 1:50:24Yes, I know what that is.
- 1:50:25I said, okay.
- 1:50:27I trust him.
- 1:50:28I said, Sharon, says uh idolaters.
- 1:50:30Sharon, do you know what an idolater is?
- 1:50:32She said, yes.
- 1:50:33Well, those are the people in the African jungles watching the gold things.
- 1:50:37I said, close enough.
- 1:50:39I said, close enough.
- 1:50:40I said, yes, no gold things.
- 1:50:41I said, OK.
- 1:50:42So now we're going to the third qualification, right?
- 1:50:47Adultery.
- 1:50:49I said, hey, guys, do you know what adultery is?
- 1:50:52They kind of looked at each other and looked at me, and they said, yeah, I think so.
- 1:50:55I said, well, let's make sure.
- 1:50:57Take your Bibles, everybody.
- 1:50:58I'm going to take about two minutes.
- 1:51:01Take your Bibles.
- 1:51:01I'll show you.
- 1:51:02I think things very simple.
- 1:51:03I'm a very simple preacher.
- 1:51:05I'm not complicated, because I don't think God meant for it to be hard.
- 1:51:10All right, so just go to Matthew 19.
- 1:51:11I'm gonna write down four things.
- 1:51:13I would strongly encourage you to do this or take a picture of the screen because this is, I've been doing this for years and it always works.
- 1:51:20I can't think of one time this did not work.
- 1:51:23They're always gonna see it.
- 1:51:24Now what they do with it, it's up to them, but they'll see it.
- 1:51:28I said, let's go to Matthew 19 verse three.
- 1:51:30Then the Pharisees came to Jesus, attempting him, saying, Jesus is at lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause.
- 1:51:37What do you think Jesus is going to do with that question?
- 1:51:41He's going uh to ask his own question.
- 1:51:44Just like I taught you Sunday, he does not answer direct questions.
- 1:51:48Have you not read?
- 1:51:50He's brilliant, isn't he?
- 1:51:52He's so good.
- 1:51:53Have you not heard that he that made them in the beginning made them male and female?
- 1:51:57And where this call shall a man leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife and they twain shall be one flesh, where God has joined together.
- 1:52:04All right, everybody can answer.
- 1:52:06Who does the joining?
- 1:52:08God.
- 1:52:09Simple.
- 1:52:10It can't get any more simple than that.
- 1:52:12God does the joining.
- 1:52:13by the way.
- 1:52:14When God does the joining, does God follow his law?
- 1:52:17Yes or no?
- 1:52:18Yes.
- 1:52:18Yes, he always follows his law.
- 1:52:20He's never going violate the law.
- 1:52:21So let's just make sure we understand.
- 1:52:23So God is going to take one eligible man, one eligible woman, and he's going to unite them.
- 1:52:28You know what God's not going to do?
- 1:52:29He's not going to unite two men.
- 1:52:31He's never going to do it.
- 1:52:33Well, the judge said, I don't care what the judge says.
- 1:52:35God's not, but the president said, I don't care what the president says.
- 1:52:39Because God is only going to unite one eligible man with one eligible woman.
- 1:52:43Well, I got that.
- 1:52:44I got the marriage ceremony certificate.
- 1:52:46I don't care what certificate you have because God is only going to do it when he follows his law.
- 1:52:52Does everybody agree with that?
- 1:52:54Everybody agree?
- 1:52:55I've never met anyone in the church who disagreed with that.
- 1:52:58I've done 325 of these.
- 1:53:02Watch out.
- 1:53:05No more can a man not go out there and take another man as his husband.
- 1:53:10Can a man go out there and take another man's wife?
- 1:53:15You can't do it.
- 1:53:18Now we're as silent as a church mouse.
- 1:53:21Because now the chickens come home to roost.
- 1:53:24Because now we understand that it's just as wrong.
- 1:53:27We're ready to stand on a phone foundation.
- 1:53:31No, you can't take another man.
- 1:53:33You can't take another man's wife either.
- 1:53:35Well, the judge says there, the judge said that there was a, well, I don't really care what the judge says because the Bible also says what God is doing together, let not man
- 1:53:43put asunder.
- 1:53:45Guess who has the power to break a marriage?
- 1:53:48God.
- 1:53:50And he will only make that marriage dissolve when you follow his law.
- 1:53:55I did not write that.
- 1:53:56God did.
- 1:53:59You know, God told us when that happens, whosoever put it the way his wife accepted B for fornication and marries another committed adultery.
- 1:54:07He that marries her that is put away committed adultery.
- 1:54:10That's God's law.
- 1:54:11I read it and I said, Jimmy and Sharon, do you understand what the Bible says?
- 1:54:14I said, of course.
- 1:54:16I said, Jimmy, is your marriage right?
- 1:54:17He said, Rob, I've never been married before.
- 1:54:19I said, Sharon, is your marriage right?
- 1:54:21She said, Rob, well, she says, my first husband left me for another woman.
- 1:54:25I said, thank God.
- 1:54:31It doesn't always work like that.
- 1:54:35I did with Geneva.
- 1:54:39Hey Rob, I got a problem, Rob.
- 1:54:42I said, what's going on, Geneva?
- 1:54:45My husband, Rob, had five wives, five wives.
- 1:54:49I'm a very optimistic person.
- 1:54:51So I said, well, Geneva, bet they've all committed adultery.
- 1:54:54And she said, no, Rob, they have not.
- 1:54:57I said, Geneva, I think we need to take some time and we need to study this.
- 1:55:02I said, let's get with the elders.
- 1:55:04So I sat down with the elders, Geneva and Nicole.
- 1:55:07We just sat down.
- 1:55:08We just read the Bible.
- 1:55:09I said, Geneva, do you understand what the Bible says?
- 1:55:11She says, yeah.
- 1:55:13I said, Geneva, what does that mean?
- 1:55:15She says, Rob, that means he's not my husband, Rob.
- 1:55:18And I need help.
- 1:55:21I said, Geneva, if that's what you want, if that's what you think, we're going to help you.
- 1:55:27I said, Geneva, I want you to know something.
- 1:55:28I said, you'll never be alone again.
- 1:55:32I said, your girls are our girls now.
- 1:55:35I said, I'll help you with them.
- 1:55:36What do you need us to do?
- 1:55:38You need a house?
- 1:55:39What do you need?
- 1:55:40She said, I just need some time.
- 1:55:44And she put him away.
- 1:55:47And in every holiday and birthday, you know where those girls are at?
- 1:55:50Our home.
- 1:55:52because those are our girls now.
- 1:55:56And we're going to be there for the girls.
- 1:55:58We love them.
- 1:56:00We love Geneva.
- 1:56:03In fact, our son, when we're not home, takes them to church.
- 1:56:08Let me introduce you to our family.
- 1:56:09You do see the resemblance, don't you?
- 1:56:12That is my family.
- 1:56:14Let me show you on the left-hand side.
- 1:56:15On the left-hand side of Hannah is Geneva.
- 1:56:19She's a courageous woman, isn't she?
- 1:56:22She loves the Lord more than she loves men.
- 1:56:25On the left-hand side is her middle child.
- 1:56:27That's, well, that's Nikea.
- 1:56:29Sitting next on Nicole's lap is the youngest.
- 1:56:31She's 10 now.
- 1:56:32Her name is, and so on the left-hand side is the oldest, and that's Nyla.
- 1:56:38And sitting behind Jared is our son.
- 1:56:41And uh that's our family.
- 1:56:44I want you to know something.
- 1:56:45When a person's willing to do what the Bible says, he'll never be alone.
- 1:56:50And so, Rob, you certainly are not suggesting that people are actually going to make those hard decisions.
- 1:56:55They just did.
- 1:56:57I was in Hartsfield, Alabama last week, and we had a lady make that decision during the seminar.
- 1:57:04And her husband accepted it because he wasn't her husband.
- 1:57:07and they repented.
- 1:57:11And I've seen it several times.
- 1:57:13I've heard members of the church say, well, you just can't expect people.
- 1:57:15Yes, you can, because that's what the Bible says.
- 1:57:20I know that some sins are harder than others, but Jesus told that rich young ruler, you need to give it back because it's not yours.
- 1:57:28He didn't say to the rich young ruler, if you're baptized, you can keep it.
- 1:57:32He said, no, you have to give it back because it's not yours.
- 1:57:38I would like to suggest tonight that if you don't have the courage in a Bible study to tell the truth, you do the kingdom a favor and never do a Bible study.
- 1:57:47Don't do it.
- 1:57:49Make sure you have the courage to tell the truth in a Bible study.
- 1:57:53Thank you for listening tonight.
- 1:57:54I do want to share a couple encouraging slides as we walk out of the auditorium.
- 1:57:58Let me show you those encouraging slides.
- 1:57:59We got a lot of new convert material.
- 1:58:01I don't have time to go over it in this seminar, but you will in the curriculum.
- 1:58:05We have other Bible study methods.
- 1:58:07This is the one study method.
- 1:58:09It's called Does It Matter?
- 1:58:10This is the three study method for those who don't believe in God.
- 1:58:13It's called Believe the Bible.
- 1:58:15It's very important.
- 1:58:16Now this is what happened in 2020.
- 1:58:19So there were 370 baptisms that took place as we were teaching.
- 1:58:23churches, 32 churches of Christ.
- 1:58:25So we increased that number to in 2021 and we had 649 baptisms.
- 1:58:31Those are the actual pictures.
- 1:58:33In 2022, it increased again to 980 baptism.
- 1:58:37In 2023, it's 1,403 baptisms.
- 1:58:41And in 2024, it's 1,939 baptisms.
- 1:58:45There is no AI-generated photo there.
- 1:58:49Those are actual people.
- 1:58:52And we keep very close numbers.
- 1:58:54We have a spreadsheet.
- 1:58:55For every baptism, there's a date and a name and a church.
- 1:58:58I don't make it up.
- 1:59:01So for those of you who are doubting, please let those pictures sink into your heart.
- 1:59:07If you'll follow New Testament evangelism, you'll grow.
- 1:59:11To God be the glory, let's pray.
- 1:59:14Father, we're thankful for this church.
- 1:59:15We're thankful for the good audience tonight.
- 1:59:18for the souls that are interested in salvation.
- 1:59:20Bless us Father that we might reach others.
- 1:59:23Help us Father to trust the gospel.
- 1:59:26Help us Father to have courage and to believe in the gospel for we know it's the power to save.
- 1:59:31And bless Collierville Father with growth.
- 1:59:34We pray for Aaron as he labors here, Justin and Father for every member.
- 1:59:38We love thee and praise thy name.
- 1:59:40Bless us as we travel home for in Jesus name we pray, amen.
