- 0:02As the awareness develops of the influences that have shaped our
- 0:05character and active nature from our ancestors, our parents, as
- 0:10well as the influences from our peers and from the society at
- 0:14large, we begin to develop a respect for the complexity of
- 0:18the task and the reasons why we cannot simply use our mental
- 0:23conception and will power to change our own nature.
- 0:27There's too much embedded in the subconscious layers of our being
- 0:31not to speak of what resides in Universal nature to Simply
- 0:36isolate ourselves from all those influences and create ourselves
- 0:40a new out of whole cloth. At the same time the task
- 0:45becomes easier. If we view it as one that
- 0:47addresses factors that are not part of our core conception of
- 0:50our own personality, the power of this approach then is the
- 0:55ability to separate oneself from the factors that need to be
- 0:59examined and changed and to recognize them as influences and
- 1:05forces outside ourselves and thus less embedded in our sense
- 1:10of self. As we sift through these
- 1:13influences, we begin to recognize patterns that can be
- 1:16modified adjusted or simply removed as no longer relevant in
- 1:22the present day. Atavistic formations can be
- 1:26dispensed with one simply can ask oneself.
- 1:29Why must this be done? Just because my parents or
- 1:33grandparents or more ancient ancestors, did it.
- 1:37This way. We actually see this example,
- 1:41working out today and Various ways.
- 1:44It is a known fact that children who were subjected to corporal
- 1:47punishment by their parents tend to exact similar corporal
- 1:51punishment on their own children.
- 1:53That is the way it was done to me and it worked so I should do
- 1:57it to them. Yet we see here and their
- 2:01parents Awakening to the harm that corporal punishment can do
- 2:04to the children and finding another way, to address the
- 2:08education and development of the child without resorting to
- 2:12physical violence. This illustrates that indeed
- 2:16change can take place when conscious awareness and
- 2:19understanding is brought to bear on the old habits, folkways
- 2:25traditions, and customs. The mother notes quote if you
- 2:31really want to transform your character it is that you must
- 2:34do. It has always been said that it
- 2:37is impossible to change one's nature in all books of
- 2:41philosophy. Even of yoga you are told the
- 2:44same story. You cannot change your
- 2:47character. You are born like that.
- 2:49You are like that. This is absolutely false.
- 2:53I guarantee it is false, but there is something very
- 2:57difficult to do to change your character because it is not your
- 3:01character, which must be changed.
- 3:04It is the character of your antecedents, and then you will
- 3:08not change it because they have no such intention, but it is in
- 3:12you that it must be changed. It is what they have given you
- 3:16all the little gifts made to you at your birth.
- 3:19Nice gifts. And is this, which must be
- 3:23changed, but if you succeed in getting hold of the threat of
- 3:27these things, the truth read, since you have worked upon this
- 3:31with perseverance and sincerity. One fine morning, you will be
- 3:36free all this will fall off from you and you will be able to get
- 3:41a start in life without any burden.
- 3:44Then you will be a new man living a new life almost with a
- 3:48new nature. And if you look back you will
- 3:52say it is not possible. I was never like that. and
