- 0:00The. Hamster with a blunt pen knife
- 0:35for doing. Quicker, quicker.
- 0:40Quicker Welcome back to Hamster with a Blunt Penknife, The
- 0:43Doctor Who Commentary Podcast. Hello Hello.
- 0:49Hello. Mr. Mark Rawlings.
- 0:51Hello. Hello.
- 0:52Where the. Fuck, have you been in my
- 0:53schedules for the last 10 years? We're busy.
- 0:57What? Was the last thing you did on
- 0:58this. The last thing that was released
- 1:04wasn't the chase, was it I? Think it was Auton #2.
- 1:06Oh, Auton 2, of course. Yes to Auton #3, yes, the
- 1:10excitement of that. However, this will be the
- 1:13apotheosis of our podcasting experience.
- 1:16And why is that? Because we are watching what I
- 1:20think is the best Sylvester McCoy story, it's certainly the
- 1:24most fun. The men in white jackets are
- 1:26coming later. I've already booked them in.
- 1:30Yeah, it's Battlefield. Battlefield.
- 1:33Can I confess something about Battlefield?
- 1:35Before we even start? Of course.
- 1:37Well, when I recorded this, sorry, when I did a review for
- 1:40my fabulous website Doko Ho reviews.
- 1:42Have you heard of this? Oh, you doko ho.
- 1:44I didn't know. I am Banksy too.
- 1:47We didn't know everybody, did we?
- 1:50It's a general, but lots of people come up with me, you
- 1:52know, and say now recently they use.
- 1:56Your blog was a Seminole point in their life, yes?
- 1:58Yeah. Of course, Seminole.
- 2:00It's one of the fucking dictionary.
- 2:04Yeah. What was my .0?
- 2:05Yeah, I reviewed this. I only gave it 3 out of 10, and
- 2:11I've slagged it off for years and years.
- 2:12And wait, no error. Because I want you to understand
- 2:16it's not. It's not just you as well, it's
- 2:18also David Maskell and other people that have spent the last
- 2:23year and a half quoting this fucking thing.
- 2:25Well, my opinion's done. A complete 180 and now I think
- 2:29this is rather delightful. It's a bit like dimensions in
- 2:31time. Every line is quotable.
- 2:34It's perfect for that, I think. Yeah, but not always.
- 2:36Because it's good, yeah. It.
- 2:38Doesn't mean you didn't. When did you first watch this?
- 2:42When it came out on video, yeah. Yeah.
- 2:45So I think it was the the special edition.
- 2:47Special edition with the extra scene of walking down the the
- 2:51curly whirly staircase with the neon lights.
- 2:54And I think there was a couple of extra scenes in that
- 2:56helicopter as well. Oh yeah, of course.
- 2:59Absolutely needed. Approach and Docklands now, Sir.
- 3:02Those things. Yeah.
- 3:03You know, only when I'm drunk. Do you know what?
- 3:06I I we'll do some quoting throughout this, you know, it's
- 3:08that sort of thing is. Do some of it.
- 3:09We'll try and keep it. We'll try and keep a balance.
- 3:12Everyone do. You think this is your favorite
- 3:14Sylvester McCoy? Story.
- 3:15Well, it's in that lot. The first one that I ever saw.
- 3:20Yeah, first McCoy story I ever saw.
- 3:24So I didn't really have anything else to compare it to.
- 3:28Very much of an argument, you know.
- 3:30But I like that go. To Fenrick and all this.
- 3:33It's yeah, I know what it yeah, it's obviously a completely
- 3:36different tone, but there's just something about it.
- 3:39There's just a fun action adventure, great characters in
- 3:42this. And I know people say like, you
- 3:45know, Time and Ronnie is silly or it's known as Endeavor and
- 3:48the Bannerman and stuff it. Is silly, but this is silly.
- 3:51Yeah, yeah, I know. But this is, I don't know.
- 3:54This one seems to get more stick than those stories for being,
- 3:58for it's sort of silliness and over the topness.
- 4:00And I I don't think it does. I think.
- 4:01This is supposed to have a a serious point about anti war and
- 4:05anti bombs and you know the the the psychological horror
- 4:10inherent in fighting these. There's supposed to be a bit in
- 4:13episode 4 that Esther McCoy talks about where he says that
- 4:16he's the Doctor is, you know, for once he's succumbing to the
- 4:20violence and he's going to decapitate somebody.
- 4:23And I don't really see that happening at all.
- 4:25It's just a jolly romp with you, yeah.
- 4:26Exactly that. That's what I want from it.
- 4:29I would just also like to point out, you know that Mister Mark
- 4:32Rawlings other favorite stories are The Android Invasion, The
- 4:35Chase, Oh and my Robber. That's quite good actually, that
- 4:37one. What's your favorite for Doctor?
- 4:39Planet of the Daleks. I rest my case.
- 4:44Well, look, before we press play, I've.
- 4:48I believe you and I just both have to bow down at the altar of
- 4:54Saint Angela Bruce. Oh, she's brilliant in this.
- 4:58If this story brought Angela Bruce to the world of Doctor
- 5:02Who, there we go. What more could you want?
- 5:05Can. I ask you that question about
- 5:06Sophie Aldrid in. Start Sophie Aldrid.
- 5:10Everyone, press play, Yeah. Awesome things to have.
- 5:13No, no. You know how I said to you, you
- 5:16know what work has she done outside of Doctor Who?
- 5:18Yes. Well, Angela Bruce has done a
- 5:21ton of work outside of Doctor Who.
- 5:23She's in that fabulous Batman of Robin episode of.
- 5:27Yeah, she's. She was the female Lister in
- 5:30red. Dwarf, yeah.
- 5:32She turned up in bad girls. I think she's in an episode of
- 5:34Bad Girls, actually, Yeah, we haven't got.
- 5:36That fight? OK, can I say as well, we met
- 5:38her at the Utopia convention, right?
- 5:41And she's batshit crazy in the most fabulous way.
- 5:44She is brilliant. She's brilliant with the crowd.
- 5:46She's when she does her talks, she's very entertaining.
- 5:49I've met, I've seen her a couple of Times Now at conventions and
- 5:52she, I think she's genuinely having a great time and that
- 5:56just comes across to everybody that she talks to.
- 5:59I remember she. Came out to our table and told
- 6:01us. I hope you have a good time.
- 6:03Yeah, yeah, she's absolutely wonderful.
- 6:05You remember when she came out into that garden tending to be
- 6:08drunk and she was like, she was going to be run, oh, fuck off
- 6:11the lot. Yeah.
- 6:12Anyway, she went up, she went up to this woman, right?
- 6:14And she goes, oh, I remember you from the other convention.
- 6:17How's it going? And.
- 6:18The woman's like going. Well, I've had an operation and
- 6:21all of this. And she went.
- 6:22Oh my God, love. I didn't ask you a fucking life
- 6:24story. It was so great.
- 6:27She is, Absolutely. And so I first watched this
- 6:29story when it was a repeat in the 90s, like I think maybe a
- 6:32lot of people did. And yeah, you.
- 6:34Must have been How old then? About 5.
- 6:36Well, I was, I was trying to work out because I was playing
- 6:39this in Infant School when it was on.
- 6:43So what age was that? I don't know.
- 6:45We were just running around, you know, being Angela, Bruce
- 6:49probably. And there was a friend called
- 6:52Joe who was my friend in Infant School and he, I remember he was
- 6:58watching this as well and we were both talking about it at
- 7:01school, but that was Infant School.
- 7:03So I was very, very young but captured our imaginations.
- 7:08Can I say that Episode 2 of Battlefield, as I've mentioned
- 7:13many times on this thing, is my first ever live episode of
- 7:17Doctor Who and I was so traumatised by what I thought
- 7:20was the death of Ace in the drown tank?
- 7:24Oh. Yeah.
- 7:25That my mother didn't let me watch any more.
- 7:28Oh, no. So, but did you find out what
- 7:29happened? Well, no now.
- 7:31Yeah, I've seen about 50. Times since.
- 7:33But when this was on in the 90s they did, I think it was a
- 7:36Friday night, they did it one a week.
- 7:38So you did experience these, you know, with the cliffhangers and
- 7:43everything, which you don't do as as a 90s, you usually, you
- 7:46know, as a 90s fan you get the video and you watch all in one
- 7:49go. But those repeats were actually
- 7:52one a week and that feeling of what's going to happen next and
- 7:56you know that's that's the closest I've got to watching,
- 7:59you know classic who I was talking to in in the right way
- 8:02I. Don't mean to name drop, but I
- 8:03was talking to Gary Russell the other day, right?
- 8:06He gave me a kiss, by the way, you know, at the BFI.
- 8:08No, honestly, I'm very handsome. Anyway, he was saying about how
- 8:14when you're a child, no. See if you agree with this or
- 8:16not. When you're a child, like, the
- 8:19week between episodes feels like forever.
- 8:23Oh no, you would never have experienced that, would you?
- 8:25Well. No, that's what I'm saying.
- 8:26I did at this in the 90s, yeah. Well, this one on in the 90s, on
- 8:29the 99, yeah. But it was repeated in 1992 or.
- 8:32Three what? A single episodes once a week?
- 8:34Yeah. Oh, OK.
- 8:35Literally just told you that story about watching it one a
- 8:39week. Stop looking distracting.
- 8:43Oh my God. So I did experience that, yes.
- 8:48Yeah. But I wish I could have
- 8:49experienced that more with stories, because yeah, you like
- 8:53what's going to happen? All the destroyers appeared.
- 8:55What is, you know? Imagine seeing that.
- 8:57What? Yeah, if I could now do, I would
- 8:59have pissed my pants in my bed. Looking at the Destroyer.
- 9:03Some great moments. It's.
- 9:05It's. Do you know what?
- 9:06I know it does have its. It does have its faults as well.
- 9:08Of course it does. And do you mind if I talk about
- 9:10that 'cause when we were talking about the chase, and I'll talk
- 9:13about the faults? No, you got very angry.
- 9:14We'll talk about the faults as well as they come up.
- 9:16But if everybody's listened to the DVD commentary of this or on
- 9:22or on the Blu-ray, the official commentary, I want to, I would
- 9:25like that this is a bit more positive because it's got Sophie
- 9:28Aldrid and Angela Bruce who are loving it and they, of course,
- 9:31they love their time and doctor it and their memories.
- 9:34Well, it is, yeah. And and then they've got Andrew
- 9:38Cartmel and Ben Arovovich Arovich.
- 9:41Say you know who I mean? Arovich Arovich And they're just
- 9:46ripping it apart and saying, oh, this didn't work, this.
- 9:48But I suppose that as they're looking at it as the writers and
- 9:51OK, yeah, you look at it as a script and maybe there are some
- 9:55plot holes or some points that could be sort of ironed out and
- 9:59they're very critical and they just bring it really down.
- 10:02I can't listen to that commentary are.
- 10:04You not surprised because you read that script Doctor and you
- 10:06think that Andrew can't now for everything he script edited was
- 10:09absolute gold Shakespeare, you know.
- 10:12I mean, I don't as again, but then going back as a child,
- 10:15you're watching it. You don't worry about these
- 10:16things that what you don't. You're not sitting there as a 7
- 10:18year old thinking, What's Ben Aravaric's problem with this
- 10:21script? What you?
- 10:22Know, I mean, I mean I'm going to, I'm going to be bold and say
- 10:24that Aronovic's other script, Rosa Daleks is a better script.
- 10:28It's a better story and it's better directed.
- 10:31There is some pretty limp duration in this, However,
- 10:34you're right. The.
- 10:35The. Quotable dialogue quotient in
- 10:38This is Out of This World. And I think everybody in the
- 10:42cast is having a great time. That always comes across well, I
- 10:45think. Shall we start?
- 10:47Well, we're two minutes in, but there's just one more thing I
- 10:49want to talk about before we go in.
- 10:50All right. Well, it's been a while since
- 10:51I've spoken to you, you know, and that is you.
- 10:56And I recently experienced the sheer joy of the Bambera Big
- 11:03Finish box set. And not a moment too soon.
- 11:06Finally, Brigadier Bambera has her own range on Big Finish and.
- 11:11Could I just say it is genuinely fantastic?
- 11:15It's like. Brilliant.
- 11:16It's I. Went in 90s, I always do and I
- 11:19came out. Just got when is the next set
- 11:21coming out? I know what was it part bugs.
- 11:24It's very much what Doctor Who I think would have been on if it
- 11:28was on in the 90s. So it's very much like the the
- 11:30TV series Bugs that was on at the time.
- 11:33And a bit of what else, what else was 90s?
- 11:36I was going to say Crime Traveller.
- 11:39Well, it's all it's that, sort of.
- 11:40Sci-fi the 90s tomorrow people sort of thing a little bit.
- 11:44All those sort of. 90s In this you've got the soldier, you've
- 11:47got the. Side effects, filesy, X, filesy
- 11:51stuff in there as well. It's a bit purwish, isn't it?
- 11:53Yeah. Because it is.
- 11:54You did? I think maybe they thought, who
- 11:56could have done that in in the 90s?
- 11:59And you know, Battlefield, OK, this was the beginning of the
- 12:02last of the classic series. I think it famously got like the
- 12:06lowest viewing figures ever, Part one.
- 12:08As a light came along in yeah, all these time.
- 12:11But the series at this time only, it could just carry on for
- 12:14a few more years. In the 90s we would have had
- 12:16battlefields all the time. Well, Barbera would have been
- 12:19back and Barbera coming back, yeah.
- 12:22May I just say, and we are going to start this now because we're
- 12:25being very indulgent, Well, I was just singing these praises,
- 12:28but the last story on that Bambera set, honest to God, I
- 12:33was in London, right? Canary Wharf, Space City I was
- 12:36in and I didn't give a Tiss A tiss.
- 12:40I didn't give a tiss where I was.
- 12:42I was so sucked into this story. It was.
- 12:47It was amazing and it ended on a great clip.
- 12:49So guys, go check out the Bambera set.
- 12:52I've done my marketing for Big Finish now from Valentine.
- 12:54You owe me a fiver, OK? Right, let's start and we must
- 12:58say we are watching the original TV version of this which.
- 13:01Is a shame because there's loads missing.
- 13:02Because actually, I always usually go to the special
- 13:04editions whenever I watch on a do but.
- 13:06You don't want to listen to us talk.
- 13:08You heard the five doctors when we talk a long time on that one.
- 13:10Here we go, right? Are we ready everyone?
- 13:12Yeah, I'm ripped. Battlefield I'm riveted
- 13:17Battlefield Part 1/3 not ripped 1 Go.
- 13:24Can I just say in full track and theme we do in fact have
- 13:29beverages. Oh well, yeah, I thought we'd
- 13:32have some of Arthur's Ale. So.
- 13:34Well, actually I've got Marks and Spencer's Lager, but
- 13:41Arthur's not brewing it at the moment.
- 13:43Fucker and Coke Pat. Good choice.
- 13:46Anything but the beer. Oh, OK.
- 13:50So, oh, so I ask you, does does the rest of McCoy theme tune
- 13:54tickle your testicles a bit? Well, I do enjoy it, but as a
- 14:00kid, OK, so you you're watching all these repeats in the 90s, so
- 14:04you're going through the 60s and 70s and stuff.
- 14:06And then this version of the this was cool at the time.
- 14:10This was the coolest thing ever. Cool.
- 14:12Now it's cool now. And the bit, my favorite bit is
- 14:14the purply what's it called the purple swirly thing.
- 14:18And when it goes over under your eyeline, when it goes in the
- 14:21island, you're like, wow, that's really cool.
- 14:22That was amazing as a child. Alistair.
- 14:25Alistair. How about this one?
- 14:26But also, OK, so I said I do, So it'll be positive, but also we
- 14:30will be critical. What, Starting season 26 in a
- 14:33fucking garden centre? We have two old fogies.
- 14:35Exactly What are we? Just what are they thinking?
- 14:38Switch the channel when it's Rosemary in time.
- 14:41But do you know what? I don't know?
- 14:43The whole idea of seeing the Brigadier domestically, It's so
- 14:47nice. I love it.
- 14:48And don't you love Doris? She's brilliant, yes.
- 14:51Can I do the quote? Oh, the later, later.
- 14:54Oh. OK, oh, this is like this
- 14:58exposition, he goes well, giving up teaching, no give.
- 15:01Leaving United Intelligence Task Force.
- 15:03But we haven't. Seen the Brigadier Since Mordron
- 15:05Undead. And we're still it's that 80s
- 15:08thing of just relying on continuity.
- 15:10Who cares? You don't need to explain any of
- 15:12that stuff. And.
- 15:13Do you know, I think that looks like a special effect, that
- 15:15water. It's weird, isn't it?
- 15:18Oh my God, here she is. So we have Angela Bruce heading
- 15:21up as the new Brigadier, and we have Robert Jezek as second in
- 15:27command or #2. Can I say it?
- 15:28Go on. Robert Jezek plays Frobisher.
- 15:31How did you say it? Frobisher in Big Finish.
- 15:35And he's fabulous. Is this his native accent?
- 15:38I don't think it is, is it? I think he's American.
- 15:41I think he's American, yeah. Here she is, the woman of the
- 15:45hour. Oh, shame herself, it's like.
- 15:4790s with the car phones. This is supposed to be 2000 and
- 15:5320s, isn't it? Oh, I know.
- 15:54I think it's 90s, late 90s. 20s is.
- 15:58It yeah, because there was a meme the other day where someone
- 16:01said I don't care if it's the king and it's set after this
- 16:05year and we've got a king. Oh yeah, Do you think that prop
- 16:10came from Game of Thrones? Well, what do you think about
- 16:13this set with the sword and a lot of the green lighting?
- 16:16It's. Quite nice, it was.
- 16:18Until I did have a thought the other day.
- 16:19I've always loved it and it does look a bit like a game show set,
- 16:22the way it's lit, but that's all just with the colours.
- 16:24A sense of scale, I think. But it's alien.
- 16:27It's supposed to be underwater. This does not have a sense of
- 16:29scale though, so they've destroyed the TARDIS sets and
- 16:32all they've got is the console and a a sort of a flat wall
- 16:36curtain. But wouldn't it have been
- 16:37amazing if a lot more 80 stories were lit like this in the
- 16:40TARDIS? It's so much more atmospheric.
- 16:43And it's some sort of type close-ups.
- 16:44It's. Yeah, I mean, I know that's out
- 16:46of necessity, but and I think those round things, someone's
- 16:50cut them out a little bit too big.
- 16:52As you see, it's a curtain. Yeah, the curtain.
- 16:53And they've someone stitched them on a bit.
- 16:55Pillows a little bit, yeah. But I think it it's a great and
- 16:59it's very rare to have a McCoy TARDIS scene as well.
- 17:03How many does Ace have The last time she was in?
- 17:05Great show in the. Galaxy Dragon Fire Greatest show
- 17:08in this and. This, yeah.
- 17:10Carmel didn't really like the TARDIS, did he?
- 17:11He liked it get into the places, but he didn't want to.
- 17:14But imagine. Imagine a story.
- 17:16Sorry his new adventures. Well, they never had the TARDIS.
- 17:18They're always firmly entrenched in.
- 17:20We're just. Going to see, imagine a story
- 17:21that's lit like this, that's the corridors of the TARDIS and it's
- 17:24all darker, like this new adventure style, yeah.
- 17:29Amazing. OK, so the doctor is Merlin.
- 17:34So when I watch this, it's only been last few years, like 2025
- 17:40years later, I've sort of really understood that what they're
- 17:45from another dimension, they're not aliens.
- 17:48It really confused me, the whole Merlin because you think they're
- 17:51going to be you just explain it. I thought they were sort from
- 17:54history, but there it is. But they but they're from
- 17:58another dimension. Well.
- 17:59He's mixing the two, isn't he? A run of it?
- 18:00He's mixing the mythology and the science fiction.
- 18:03But in I'm talking about in the world of this story, the the
- 18:06Knights and stuff, they've got 10.
- 18:08They're from like a medieval technology, you know.
- 18:12Yeah, I didn't understand it as a child.
- 18:14I just was like, I couldn't get my head around these Knights
- 18:16having technology and I didn't, I couldn't understand.
- 18:20You understand now, but I understand now you.
- 18:23Know what if my head just wiped? Yeah, it's like in the middle of
- 18:27a wall that doesn't even belong to this dimension, You and your
- 18:31freaky friends. OK, Peter Warmsley here.
- 18:34Now that you know what, the actor has a bit of trouble with
- 18:36his lines sometimes, don't he? There's one bit where the
- 18:39director forgets to cut away and he's clearly forgotten his
- 18:41lines. I like all of this though this
- 18:43shots with the camera going through the windscreen.
- 18:47Because I think a couple of years ago, I know you had that
- 18:49in the van in remembrance of the dialects, didn't you?
- 18:52But this is still, yeah, for the camera work.
- 18:56For the tie, well, you don't have.
- 18:57Nothing like this in Colin Baker's.
- 18:58Time. Well, no, exactly.
- 18:59You can get Colin sick Doctor and Perry in a Jeep going round.
- 19:02Late 80s, early 90s, I think there was a mass of innovation
- 19:07in making television. It just suddenly got a lot more
- 19:10stylish. I mean, well, it's all his TV.
- 19:12Always a look. Well, it's all on video.
- 19:14Yeah. Outside, I think it's easier
- 19:16equipment. Now here's Brigadier Bambera
- 19:19looking pissed because they've driven the missile.
- 19:23What's happened? Into the lake.
- 19:25What I think they have, have they.
- 19:27Oh, oh, she said. Why not drive it into?
- 19:29They got a nuclear warhead. I don't know, that's not really
- 19:32explained, is it? Oh no.
- 19:34There's a long speech about it in episode 4.
- 19:36Winifred. Your call, voice.
- 19:41Stranded at the Lake of the Dead King.
- 19:44That's a brilliant location. There's so much location on this
- 19:49story. I love all the in season 26,
- 19:51especially all the location work is brilliant.
- 19:53Yeah, and I think it's. And it just really.
- 19:55Makes it more of a story, more of.
- 19:57A Got some. Energy to it as well, doesn't
- 19:59it? Although Kef Mccullough's music
- 20:01gives anything energy, I always feel like I'm in a big gay
- 20:03disco, you know, when I'm listening to him.
- 20:05I'm up and down a bit with me sometimes.
- 20:06It's so like in here because I I think because I've heard this
- 20:08music so much, because I've watched this story so much, I'm
- 20:12I'm used to it. But some other stories I can get
- 20:14a bit. Can I say, because I am
- 20:19occasionally critical of Sophie Upgrade and Sylvester McCoy,
- 20:23that I think their chemistry at this point is just amazingly
- 20:28good and they have a sequence in a minute where he goes, who's
- 20:32Elizabeth Shaw? I don't even look like her,
- 20:35think like a feather. Like, I think they've got their
- 20:42characters like 100% of this one, haven't they?
- 20:46I might just can I just do my updates.
- 20:48So I think it was in the shakedown episode that we did.
- 20:51I still haven't heard if anybody else remembers Sylvester McCoy
- 20:56taking part in a some sort of youth family theatre thing.
- 21:00I said Braintree in the last in the last time I mentioned this,
- 21:05but actually it was Brentwood Leisure Centre.
- 21:07So if anybody has any information about Sylvester
- 21:10McCoy turning up a Brentwood Leisure Centre in this Youth
- 21:15Theatre production 9596, please let me know.
- 21:20I did not dream it. I was there.
- 21:21I saw him. He was the Doctor on the big
- 21:23screen. Honestly, he's he's there
- 21:26staring at his Twitter every day, waiting for someone to drop
- 21:28in. I can't find out however so.
- 21:31Brentwood. Brentwood, that's where the.
- 21:33Leisure tower blocks are from Day of the Dialects, or so I
- 21:36learned the other day. Oh, what are these nights with
- 21:39ray guns? That's pretty cool idea, isn't
- 21:41it? Yeah, this is the way they sort
- 21:42of rise up out of the mud. It's great.
- 21:45And the the actual costume, the look of it, the way that they've
- 21:47merged those two are a great a great look.
- 21:50The. Guns are a bit of shit, like
- 21:51with those sparks. Aren't they?
- 21:53Well, that'll fight secrets. Sparks in the McCoy era,
- 21:56Remember when the sidemen fire? There's like, Bill, Bill, Bill.
- 22:02What's occurring here? Well, you'd think that unit
- 22:04would have a a hotline that if the doctor turns up, Oh.
- 22:08I forgot she was in Press Gang. She had a big role in Prescan.
- 22:11Angela. Bruce.
- 22:14Yeti Autons, Daleks, sidemen and Solarians.
- 22:17I'll say it. Can I say it?
- 22:18OK. I'm like, oh, the varied ones of
- 22:20the universe. So something so family can't
- 22:22shut. Doesn't believe you.
- 22:23Mine. Well, McCoy sounds like such a
- 22:26pervert. I'll tell you love this because
- 22:29I think this is the good kind of continuity where she's going,
- 22:33you know what do you know? And it's like, yeah, we knew
- 22:36somebody called the Doctor. She's so serious.
- 22:42OK, this little bit of acting might not be the the best when
- 22:44she's like she sort of gazes off into.
- 22:47The. Off onto the screen I'm like.
- 22:50Did you not see where she gazed off screen when Batman was Robin
- 22:52came? Towards her, his.
- 22:54Physical appearance, sort of look.
- 22:58But how do you say a line? Like how do you convincingly say
- 23:02something like that? I mean, she does incredibly well
- 23:04it. Was so convincing his whole
- 23:07appearance. It's it's a tough scene to act,
- 23:11to be fair. A lot of this is tough.
- 23:13To act. Oh, here we.
- 23:14Go. Why does everybody always talk
- 23:15about? And?
- 23:16You're about to say this, aren't you?
- 23:17Why does the previous house have massive house and garden?
- 23:19No. It's not his house.
- 23:20It's her house. Why is this whole debate?
- 23:23Who cares whose house is? This is what's happened, right?
- 23:25He was living in that horrible little heart, being a maths
- 23:28teacher and then and then he went to a family party.
- 23:31From downtime. I think he went to a family
- 23:33party, right? And Doris was there, and he
- 23:35remembered her from Brighton. When she, you know, he fucked
- 23:37her. And she gave her she no, she
- 23:39gave him a lovely watch. Remember Planet of the Daleks,
- 23:42right? That was Doris wasn't.
- 23:44It. Yeah, I think so.
- 23:45And then he goes, you know what, I'm going to get into bed with
- 23:47her now, and I'm going to live in this marvellous house.
- 23:50And here he is. He's done here.
- 23:51Doing the gardening. Doing the gardening.
- 23:54She does look a bit like I'm going to say Patsy Kensit.
- 23:57No, Patsy. Kendall.
- 23:59Kendall. Patsy from No.
- 24:01He's in the kid life, Patsy. Felicity.
- 24:05Ken. Patsy.
- 24:06Kenzie. She looks like Felicity.
- 24:09Ken, you're like Patsy right now.
- 24:12Oh, don't that target look fab in the sun?
- 24:14It's right. It's very light, isn't it?
- 24:16Yeah, it's sort of. Well, I think it was repainted
- 24:18after it went pink, right? No, of course.
- 24:23So why is Bambara? Oh, she's been nice to him now.
- 24:26Because she's he's trouble. He's touchy, yeah.
- 24:30Keep your eye on him. Oh my God, you know, are we
- 24:33going to call Crow? The older hotel I think they
- 24:36are, aren't they? Yeah.
- 24:37Can I just say as well, the Behind the Sofa feature on the
- 24:40Blu-ray starring Annika Wills, Janet Fielding and Sarah Sutton
- 24:45is fabulous. Janet Fielding goes, well,
- 24:49you're not going to have any trouble going to the Gora Crow,
- 24:51are you? I don't know why she's American
- 24:53all of a sudden. OK, so this bit with the
- 24:55Knights. Oh no it's not.
- 24:58Music. This is OK.
- 25:02Yeah. Oh, here she is.
- 25:03Here we are. Star of spats.
- 25:06Yes, Shell Young did you? Ever watch spats?
- 25:10Well, I did, yeah. I remembered watching it as a
- 25:13child. I mean, I would have been
- 25:14watching that on CITV at the same time.
- 25:17This was repeated in the 90s, you know.
- 25:19Brilliant in it, honestly. It started off with a man
- 25:21dancing on a burger. I've loved fast food ever since.
- 25:27Spats, for anyone who's wondering, is a children's TV
- 25:29show. I think it was on ITV.
- 25:31CITV Yeah. Starring the opening of this
- 25:33American diner in England and the actress who played Shao
- 25:37Yung, What's her name? Ling Tai.
- 25:39Yeah, yeah, yeah, she thinks. David Maskell tried to get into
- 25:42a cameo, but she cancelled it. She didn't want to talk to.
- 25:47You she did not want to talk. Here we are ordering our, our,
- 25:49our, our, our. Sales.
- 25:51Cheers. Anything but the beer.
- 25:53It's be 5 lbs, please. Do you mind?
- 25:56That's a very valuable piece of kind of egg.
- 26:00Oh my God, you know what's coming up, don't you?
- 26:02Boom. Oh look, the info text is
- 26:07spelling out exactly how much £5 was worth.
- 26:09It's £12 in today's money, yeah. I think 5 lbs.
- 26:13All right. Now it is.
- 26:14Actually, can I just say this set, this pub set, it's a set,
- 26:17isn't it? It was, it looks.
- 26:19So. Good.
- 26:20It does look like the inside, doesn't it?
- 26:24That the fella went upstairs for a sleep who played Peter
- 26:27Wolvesley. No, that's in the real house
- 26:29that they used for the outside. Oh my God, this TV studio is so
- 26:33convincing. I'm going to.
- 26:35Go Goodbye goodbye stories. That's.
- 26:39It I mean because you get, you know like Coronation Street or
- 26:41something like that. It's a studio.
- 26:42It's so overlit. But actually for 80s Doctor Who
- 26:45and I do go on about the lighting.
- 26:46The lighting is perfect. Why?
- 26:48Why is it that they can get lighting like that for like, you
- 26:51know, your your pub, your traditional realistic pub, but
- 26:54then other things has to be so bright.
- 26:56The most fairy lights are going up the stairs later.
- 26:58Do you remember though? Exactly on the.
- 27:00Contrast. We're not seeing that, are we in
- 27:01this version? Not in this version, no.
- 27:03But even the in the, whatever it's called, the underwater ship
- 27:06thing, that lighting there compared to actually.
- 27:08Well, I suppose you get the contrast then.
- 27:10But you you know what I'm trying to say.
- 27:12Can I say to you that? Oh, this is the yeah, this oh.
- 27:16The fights are. I don't really get.
- 27:18And then it's is Bambera just sort of standing, just watching?
- 27:22Yeah, she's sort of in the background.
- 27:23Gun Like a super beat but. She's sort of in the background
- 27:26and they're not bothered about her and then it's this a bit
- 27:30silly, sort of just running into each other.
- 27:33I love Angela Bruce Moore, stop. Will you stop taking a pic out
- 27:35of? Her.
- 27:36I know. And no, I'm not.
- 27:37I'm just saying that the fighting is a.
- 27:38Bit that that's the direction of this is terrible, but never
- 27:43mind, it's fun. It is fun now.
- 27:45Do you not think it's lovely when Sophie Aldrid has an
- 27:48assistant like Shadow? Brilliant, isn't it?
- 27:50She and she, she's had a few over the time.
- 27:53She always finds somebody to talk to in that way she's.
- 27:55Got the most quotable line in all of Doctor Who.
- 27:57Do you want to know what it is? Go for it.
- 27:59But I. I like how that you don't spend
- 28:06a lot of time, they're just at the pub, they're chatting and
- 28:08she's. Whisked off with.
- 28:09Them in the in the adventure and you're building what happened
- 28:12and you're already building these characters.
- 28:14You've met quite a lot of characters already in this part
- 28:17in this first episode. You.
- 28:19Know you never know you're going to meet in.
- 28:20A party and you have June Bland. She's not bland, though.
- 28:23She is no from Earth shock previously, if anybody oh, I
- 28:27should look up where else she's been.
- 28:28And she's and actually she brings a bit of class to the
- 28:31preceding I feel like she's the most accomplished actress in the
- 28:36whole of the cast, may I say. And she doesn't have too much to
- 28:41do in. This it's a good part though.
- 28:43I love that cardigan of her's. Actually, can I say that she
- 28:45does have a line here at the moment.
- 28:46I think it might have just passed that I've used all the
- 28:48time. OK, touch it.
- 28:51I can feel it's presence. Oh no, now it's cold.
- 28:57But yeah, I think she's she's brilliant in this.
- 29:01She was in earth shock as well, and I thought she was similarly
- 29:04good in that actually. Yeah, in the same in that story
- 29:06she brings the the classy acting the it's like.
- 29:10They were rude, but. There's no men on the wall.
- 29:13She just brings that level of. Something extra when she says,
- 29:17oh, shame. Do you know what she's really
- 29:19supposed to be saying, don't you?
- 29:20Well, oh shit. Well, yeah.
- 29:23But you can't say it, because that house is beautiful, isn't
- 29:26it? Look at that greenhouse in the
- 29:27background as well. A massive greenhouse the.
- 29:29House is bigger than my house. Honestly, I'm going live in
- 29:34Alistair. And no, it's Doris's greenhouse.
- 29:37Looks like they've got a spare couple of wings and that's
- 29:39probably where Anselin stay. Although I would say Anselin and
- 29:42Bambera are no longer together in the Bambera set.
- 29:45Apparently he had fights to to go to in his own dimension.
- 29:48I hope they bring him back. I hope they bring him back.
- 29:51Because I ask you what could be a bit of a rude question, OK,
- 29:55but could you think of a Doctor Who story of more fuckable men
- 29:58in it than this? Anselin and Mordred?
- 30:03You know, for the for the heterosexuals, you've got
- 30:07Bambera and Ace and Shao Jung. Oh.
- 30:10God. And for those people that like
- 30:11that sort of thing, you've got Sylvester McCoy.
- 30:13What? About Doris and the Brigadier.
- 30:16Let's not go there. Oh no, these sparks.
- 30:21Yeah, I think the sparks are something a little bit that
- 30:25might not be needed. I think the way that Angela
- 30:28Bruce has always got a scowl on her face, she never looks quite
- 30:30happy except when she says the line.
- 30:32So you're married or what? Which is great.
- 30:36Oh, here's the bit where, oh, she does Polish in the bar
- 30:39beautifully during bland, you know.
- 30:42I love how the yeah, you got things like the car phone is
- 30:45referenced very you know it's it's it's nice because they've
- 30:49not gone. We need to work out what year
- 30:51this is, I think. It's the twenty 20s.
- 30:53Because even that even the 80s version of the twenty 20s isn't
- 30:57so far stretched, it's very realistic.
- 31:00And actually, there's the there would have been the temptation,
- 31:03if you are setting it so far, to have a few extra things.
- 31:06I'm not even budget wise. You might not be able to, but
- 31:09you could have gone a little bit silly with some things.
- 31:11Yeah, it's true. But it's still you can watch
- 31:15this and it can be still the 80s in a way.
- 31:17What I. Mean.
- 31:18Well, not clean. You know what I mean though, But
- 31:20it's interesting that you said it's you don't sell it so far in
- 31:24the future. Like they did with the Unit
- 31:25stories. Well.
- 31:26Or, well, still, yeah, the unit things, that's.
- 31:28Did you see what the info text just said there?
- 31:30Apparently you're supposed to come in and say it's a bloody
- 31:32great rocket, and then JNT vetoed it because of the swear.
- 31:36Oh, Jean Marsh. And you get these little hints
- 31:39of Jean Marsh. Waiting for me.
- 31:43It's a little bit frustrating that The Brigadiers takes so
- 31:47long to get into the story. I mean, you're sitting here for
- 31:49a few minutes watching a helicopter land.
- 31:51In the Demons, they just went off in the helicopter and they
- 31:53were there. He could have got the call.
- 31:55I mean, I don't. Know though that it's kind of
- 31:58shown. But he can't.
- 31:59But I suppose he can't get there too early in the script.
- 32:02Oh God, I sound like Ben Reverich now.
- 32:04Ben. Oh God, I'm so sorry.
- 32:06A roverich? A roverich.
- 32:08I feel like I'm a I'm a roverich thing right now, but I can see
- 32:11how. Maybe because the Brigadier
- 32:15can't get there too early. So you've got to have an episode
- 32:17of him just in a helicopter and saying goodbye.
- 32:19And is this scene where he's very tender with Doris here and
- 32:23she's saying you don't have to go?
- 32:24Was that, do you think? Because they were going to kill
- 32:26off the Brigadier originally and then they changed it, do you
- 32:28think? The goodbye, do you?
- 32:29Think that scene there is to is a leftover from the original
- 32:33where he hasn't because she's saying you don't have to go you
- 32:35don't have to do this and he's like I am and then that would
- 32:38have paid off at the end when he.
- 32:39Was killed. Stubborn sticking in dumb skull.
- 32:44Oh, this is the infamous boom scene.
- 32:47I think people don't like this story just for this scene, you
- 32:49know. You should have heard what Doc
- 32:50OOA was going on about and this. He got that bloody boom.
- 32:53Is that like people going backwards from?
- 32:55Other I love it. I absolutely love it and like.
- 32:57I hang on the but the explosion. And the ambition between the
- 33:01cutting back and forth, I think it just needs to be a bit
- 33:03tighter. You're not the person that minds
- 33:06it if they're ambitious, but they don't quite achieve it.
- 33:09Well, no, I still, I get what's supposed to happen, but I I
- 33:12think it just needs to be a bit speedier.
- 33:14Can I just ask you what Tri Nitro toiletrine?
- 33:17Is. I have no idea.
- 33:18She says she wants out with more Breezins.
- 33:21What's Breezins? I don't know.
- 33:23But it's all very cool. Ace was so cool because the
- 33:25explosive thing and the baseball bat thing.
- 33:27In school, in infants, right? Me and my friend Ross, we'd be
- 33:31playing Remembrance of the Dark. We would all fight about who was
- 33:33going to be Ace, because Ace had the baseball all second.
- 33:36You'd be the Brigadier because a Brigadier had a gun.
- 33:38It was all about the what happens.
- 33:40Forget Mary Whitehouse. We always wanted to be ace,
- 33:43blowing things up and hitting people with baseball bats when
- 33:45we were young. Scaring.
- 33:47Me right now. That's why she was the cool
- 33:49companion. Can I ask you something?
- 33:50Yeah. What's going on?
- 33:52You better ask the professor what's going.
- 33:54On my such a war that doesn't even belong to this dimension.
- 34:01Do you know Bambera's a bit rude here?
- 34:04She comes in and goes. You're under arrest, you and
- 34:07your freaky friends. I think what she's supposed to
- 34:11say is fucking friend. Oh, my God, Anselyn.
- 34:15Now look, we we do need to talk about Marcus Gilbert.
- 34:18And do that in the next episode. Have we got time now?
- 34:20No, not really. OK, so in the.
- 34:21Next episode, very quick. Second to just say that many of
- 34:26my wet dreams in the 90s were about Marcus Gilbert as Anselyn.
- 34:30He is pretty though he is. So is Maldred.
- 34:34See when she says as well, Oh it's an Android or something I
- 34:37that confused me even more because I thought is he an
- 34:39Android? I don't.
- 34:40Know, do you know at the end of this cliffhanger the whole wall
- 34:44was supposed to explode? Oh yeah, they didn't have time.
- 34:48So you just get a sound effect? Yeah, so you don't know, but
- 34:53it's annoying that then you cut back to, oh, the bricketers only
- 34:56just get into the helicopter now.
- 34:57He's an old man. Give him a chance.
- 35:00He's been. Snocking Doris on the lawn for
- 35:01half an hour. Helicopter man just sitting
- 35:05there waiting. I love this shot though You're
- 35:08actually, I think you're right. This shot as it pulls away from
- 35:10her watching him, it's supposed to be like a goodbye, isn't it?
- 35:14Yeah, this sort of thing you get in the movie.
- 35:17Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:20Fabulous. Xiao Yung asking.
- 35:22Merlin was removed. Don't take lines away from Ling
- 35:26Tai. She's the best.
- 35:28But this is, it's a great concept this, you know, they're
- 35:32calling him Man, Of course. Why haven't they done Merlin
- 35:34before in Doctor Who? You'd think in 26 years somebody
- 35:36would have done something like that.
- 35:38Touched on the Arthurian. Measure.
- 35:39Yeah, yeah. And I think they do really cute
- 35:42things with it. When she pulls the sword out the
- 35:44stage, like, no, no, Professor, it's not like I'm king of the
- 35:47Britons, is it? Yeah, you know.
- 35:50I mean, I don't know too much about Arthurian legend.
- 35:52You know the basics, I know we are the basics.
- 35:55And what I know from Merlin, which is probably a little bit
- 35:57different. The TV series I'm.
- 36:00Literally in the dark about all of this.
- 36:01So basically my knowledge of Merlin is this story.
- 36:04Oh, OK Well, it's slightly. Skewed.
- 36:06Then it comes from another dimension.
- 36:09Oh, here we go. Do you think Shao Yung could
- 36:12have been a companion throughout the season?
- 36:14Oh, absolutely. All over that shit.
- 36:16You know, someone that they just drop in again.
- 36:18She could end up working for UNIT or something and just.
- 36:20That bad? That could be the new.
- 36:22More Earth space stories. There's someone and there we go.
- 36:24There's a. Cliff, by all accounts,
- 36:26Chipnall's bringing everyone back in that special.
- 36:28If Shao Yung comes back as well, I'll be over the moon.
- 36:31You can be stupid. Because you could have seen her
- 36:34and Ace going off, getting in trouble together, and working
- 36:38really well to get a different way to Ace and Mel.
- 36:41That's true. I'm going to say right, that
- 36:43episode, yeah, I think that it's doing exactly what the show
- 36:48needed to be doing at this time and that is earth based,
- 36:51something very relatable with lots of really cool characters
- 36:55and lots of action and blah blah blah.
- 36:57I do think it's it is what they should have been doing.
- 37:00I don't think it's well directed and that is probably my biggest
- 37:03problem with this is. It's very ambitious, though.
- 37:09It's a very ambitious everything you've got in.
- 37:11Episode 4, right? You get these action sequences
- 37:13with people like literally jumping over trampolines with
- 37:15Kev McCullough playing his gay disco music.
- 37:18It's tonally very strange. We're out in episode one now.
- 37:23Do you have any closing thoughts?
- 37:25No, just. Well, let's just see what
- 37:27happens in episode 2 in episode 2.
- 37:30Let's do it. The
- 38:06a hamster with a blunt penknife for doing.
- 38:08Quicker, quicker. Quicker Welcome back to A
- 38:14Hamster with a Blunt Penknife, a Doctor Who commentary podcast.
- 38:20You really sound like you were thinking about that.
- 38:22No, it was it took me a minute. It's been a while, yeah.
- 38:26Do you know what I realized in episode one?
- 38:27Yeah. Well, you mean when we did the
- 38:29Android invasion commentary many, many years ago and you
- 38:32didn't say anything? I know.
- 38:33It was like getting blood out of stone to get you don't fucking
- 38:36shut up now, do you? Well, we are here.
- 38:41We are watching Battlefield. That's right, Episode 2, Episode
- 38:442 and. The air.
- 38:47Is like honey. I cannot allow your
- 38:50interference, Mark. But before I can ask you a
- 38:55question, yeah, what I do love asking questions.
- 38:57Is there any way to learn? I think that's the first of a
- 39:00coin line, isn't it? I don't know.
- 39:02Okay, Do you think this is an interesting innovation of units
- 39:07because obviously in the 70s it was very British, wasn't it,
- 39:10very sort of middle class that Benton and Yates and the
- 39:14Brigadier was. Now they're going sort of full
- 39:17on continental. They got, they got people.
- 39:20Sorry, International. Yes.
- 39:21Continental. Right.
- 39:25Jesus fucking competition. Yeah.
- 39:30And you obviously you've got lots of mixed race and I don't
- 39:33know, I just think it's so refreshing because.
- 39:36We you couldn't have stayed how it was.
- 39:38In terms of representation though, I think this is one of
- 39:40the best Doctor Who stories still.
- 39:43Absolutely. And again, in season 2016, if
- 39:46they had another season, it would have only progressed even
- 39:48more and and just carried on that way, I think, and more.
- 39:51That's the same, isn't it? Yeah, and.
- 39:53More Shao Young. We want both of them.
- 39:55Oh my God, can't they bring Shao Young into the Bambara series?
- 39:59I would love. Isn't the taste of the Big
- 40:01Finish. Yeah.
- 40:02In the Big Finish thing, I think Anson needs to come back and
- 40:05they could get all these characters.
- 40:07Yeah. Should we start Part 2?
- 40:09Is that? Yeah.
- 40:10Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh.
- 40:12Still sipping my off as oh. Hang on a second.
- 40:15What? Hey, that's my car.
- 40:17All right. OK.
- 40:20It's all right. It's OK.
- 40:21I don't need it. Right.
- 40:23Oh my God, there's more part with oh forget.
- 40:27Part 2. Into Time and Space The
- 40:30Fabulous. I love the way the stars explain
- 40:32I. Love the stars.
- 40:33I love the silvery rocks that go do.
- 40:37You know what though, right? I don't think they didn't.
- 40:40The reason why the ratings were so low this season is they
- 40:42didn't do no trials or anything, did they?
- 40:45There's always some, there's always exclusive. 3.9 million
- 40:49viewers and this was the show on the up.
- 40:53I know, but this was was it against Coronation Street by now
- 40:56on a weekday or something? Well, Rich Holdsworth, that's a
- 40:59hell of a draw, honestly. Curly Watts and Raquel.
- 41:03Oh no, I. Think they would have been and
- 41:04yeah. You've got the inferior pub in
- 41:06Coronation Street. This is the best pub set.
- 41:08You should the GoPro Hotel. Like, if they don't need
- 41:11Coronation Street, they can turn over and see June Bland at the
- 41:13bar. What's that strange bit all
- 41:15about when the lights go out and everyone screams?
- 41:17I love that I. Love that I like it when he
- 41:19goes. Pop, Good morning.
- 41:23Earthquake in England. Oh, it's.
- 41:26Brilliant. And it was so scary again.
- 41:28It reminds me of child watching this.
- 41:30It was scary when all the lights go out.
- 41:33Or can we just have a moment for Angela Bruce?
- 41:35Oh, can you turn it up a second? I just want everyone to hear her
- 41:38saying, you ready? Oh, she's about to come.
- 41:40Through Oh, no. Wait, wait, wait.
- 41:47Here we go. Here we go.
- 41:50There we go. You.
- 41:54Freaky friends. Oh, a bit.
- 41:58We had a bit of sound earlier. Okay, do you know, I'm actually
- 42:02convinced That's a brewery, though.
- 42:03They got few barrels. So is this is this set all?
- 42:07Okay, No, it's set. Set.
- 42:09Yeah. It's perfect.
- 42:10Again, the lighting is spot on. Do you know what's hilarious?
- 42:13In a minute where she's You'll talk to me and start kicking the
- 42:18shit out of answering. They're just establishing their
- 42:21credentials. I love that bit.
- 42:23Oh shit, look at that shooting. Him.
- 42:26Oh, so here we have Mordred. Mordred, who Sarah Sutton
- 42:31thought was a nice bit of rough on the behind the sofa.
- 42:34I've not seen him in any other stuff I mean, I've seen.
- 42:37Oh, I'll tell my story. I'll tell my Marcus Gilbert
- 42:40story. Oh, if.
- 42:41You were listening. To your show.
- 42:43This was the worst experience of Marc's life.
- 42:46It. Wasn't pissed off, I was.
- 42:48Very excited to meet some of the cast of Battlefield.
- 42:50That's all I they did. There's quite a few of them
- 42:52together at a convention I went to a few years ago and I met him
- 42:56then. He was.
- 42:56He was all right. And then this time at this
- 42:59signing. Say one thing about this, yeah,
- 43:01it's very bizarre, right? It's because Fab, Fabulous
- 43:04Phantom, they do these lovely events.
- 43:07Oh, this one. It was this signing in this
- 43:09church hall with a couple of tables and these tiny kiddie
- 43:12chairs. They are, aren't they?
- 43:13So anyway. Very strange affair.
- 43:16Great. Marcus Gilbert was there.
- 43:17I had something for him to sign. Very exciting to see because
- 43:20it's from my favorite, one of my favorite stories, and he'd hurt
- 43:24his hand. So you're right.
- 43:26And he had it in like a cast or something.
- 43:29So I was going off. I was like, oh, can you sign
- 43:30that? You know, it was literally he
- 43:32had to write to Mark and sign his name.
- 43:35And he was like, oh, I've hurt my hand.
- 43:37I can't write dedications. I can't write to Mark.
- 43:41So he just refused to write that.
- 43:43He wrote his name just about. And then the person wrote.
- 43:48And then he got whoever was looking after him to write the
- 43:50dedications. He got some random person wrote
- 43:52to Mark, and then he wrote his name very slowly.
- 43:55I was just thought. I'd just say it as Mark.
- 43:58As Mark walked back towards me. I have never seen him look so
- 44:01slighted and insulted it. Was just not something you
- 44:04wouldn't expect, like oh, I can't write like 6 letters.
- 44:10Even worse, do you think you said you went you're going to
- 44:13love this? Like, I like a bit drama.
- 44:17Well, I just thought, don't. If you can't do it, don't turn
- 44:20up and do it and don't charge. 10 lbs.
- 44:22And he didn't allow it to be there.
- 44:23And he looked very. I just thought.
- 44:26I would like to say that it doesn't take away.
- 44:27Does that take? My favours at the moment.
- 44:29What does that spoil your enjoyment of anselin?
- 44:31No it doesn't. That's good because it's not
- 44:33good. Anselin is not Marcus Gill.
- 44:35You've turned the sound right down again, right?
- 44:41OK, here we go. Well, we had to have silence for
- 44:43the Marcus Gilford. Sorry, I just, I just like
- 44:45hearing a bit of Kef McCullough. I mean, I'm sure he's all right.
- 44:48It was just. I just thought, what?
- 44:50Don't even bother turning up if you can't use your hand.
- 44:54Ah, did you see that AP Gash Y, which is his surname Anslin?
- 44:58Oh yeah, it means, oh son of something in Welsh, but it's
- 45:02tied into the Arthurian legend. A lot of, yeah.
- 45:05You've got a lot of the Welsh names and the Welsh things in in
- 45:09now this. Is a shameless bit.
- 45:11I'll tell you for why. Because are you going to enter
- 45:13off Rich right now? I'm not going to have her off
- 45:15Rich. No, I'm going to say I think she
- 45:18gets a fabulous build up. All this sorcery and the light
- 45:22fittings, you know, going up and lighting up and the sword going
- 45:26in and the sparks. And then he starts laughing his
- 45:29head off and it's just like a panty.
- 45:31I think the. Laughing scene divides.
- 45:34No, Well. No, actually.
- 45:35It's excuse to one side, it's just a bit is it that directors,
- 45:40the directors issue there Michael?
- 45:42Kerrigan. Yes.
- 45:43Do you remember? Do you know what I suppose?
- 45:45You've got to try and build up the tension more and more and
- 45:47more and more. Yeah, but not by having someone
- 45:50going you. Know it's one of those points in
- 45:53Doctor Who. There are certain points
- 45:55sometimes where you don't want someone else to walk in the room
- 45:57while you're watching it, and you don't want someone to walk
- 46:00in the room while he's laughing his head off.
- 46:02That isn't a fan. I mean, you know what I mean?
- 46:04Then she turns up in a in a hail of lights.
- 46:07And but then that is an amazing thing in the way that the lights
- 46:10there and. It's it's behind the lights
- 46:12behind her. Really.
- 46:13She's done. It's.
- 46:14Just It's so funny. You can go from something
- 46:16terrible like that laughing to something amazing.
- 46:18Mark, hear me. I hear.
- 46:22You. Do not face against me this
- 46:25time, Mark, for your soul's sake.
- 46:30Is there any other Doctor story you know?
- 46:32So many lines? That's just.
- 46:33Brilliant. Was this scabbard on a sword?
- 46:37On a on a wire. That's like CGI or something.
- 46:40But yeah, I think it's going to wire.
- 46:42There Why is the glasses lit? I know.
- 46:44Honestly, people make pretty things.
- 46:45People coming to the. Pub.
- 46:47So I'm going to look at the pub. I do like to go to these kind
- 46:49of, you know, these pubs and it smells like cigarette smoke, you
- 46:55know, you sort of traditional. Personal.
- 46:57Life all right. Do quite like.
- 46:59Oh, and the Brigadier, he's still up there.
- 47:00He's it's the longest. He's asleep.
- 47:03I thought in helicopters you're supposed to get there really
- 47:04quick. I don't know, but it's not
- 47:06really so much about the story of the Briggs.
- 47:07Asleep. If this is really random
- 47:10knowledge, if they could get the TOWIE cast from like 2 nightclub
- 47:14appearances from one end of the UK to the other like they did at
- 47:17their height of their fame which I was listening to about on the
- 47:20podcast, they could get the Brigadier from one place to the
- 47:23other in what it's like 2 days or something.
- 47:26Oh no. Oh sorry sorry.
- 47:27Correction, he's he stops in London to be briefed.
- 47:30Doesn't. He Well, it's a shame though,
- 47:31because on a special edition they show footage of London and
- 47:34it it allows you to understand the geography of what they're
- 47:37doing more. I feel like there's some bits
- 47:39taken out that would have helped.
- 47:42But can I say yeah, So far we've seen him in a garden centre
- 47:45doing his gardening in his lovely garden, then getting
- 47:48taken ages to get into a helicopter, then asleep, and
- 47:51then when he finally gets to Carberry, he just has a little
- 47:55chat with Morgan. Hello Render.
- 47:58Now we can avoid bloodshed, you know, it's like what?
- 48:01Yeah, And if you don't know the character of the Brigadier, does
- 48:05that look different? Because you'd be like, who's
- 48:07this guy that's on his way that's completely disconnected
- 48:09from everything so far, because we know it's the Brigadier.
- 48:14It's just great to see him doing whatever really, isn't it?
- 48:17It is and he is. He is fun and they do some
- 48:19lovely things with him and Ace, you know.
- 48:22Well, they cut that scene out, didn't they?
- 48:23Where they where she gets a tick?
- 48:24Yeah. That's a shame.
- 48:26Not really my field that. Is a bit of a shame, that was.
- 48:29Sylvester Mccoy's acting in this bit is hilarious.
- 48:32I cannot allow You're at the ferrets, yeah.
- 48:36And you know when he sort of, you know, when he grabs the
- 48:40scabbard and sort of screams in pain?
- 48:43I mean, have you ever seen a man have an orgasm a bit like that?
- 48:46Oh, I don't want to talk about the guy.
- 48:47Have an orgasm. Sorry, yeah.
- 48:49No. He's doing it.
- 48:55Oh, that's great. Though the way Ansling comes
- 48:57behind it goes, she is coming. Because he knows, yeah.
- 49:02Yeah. And can I say, as much as I am
- 49:05ripping this a lot, Jean Marsh as Morgan is bloody brilliant.
- 49:14She's peerlessly good. She's been playing witches like
- 49:18this in Willow Off. In films like that, she's.
- 49:20Great in Willow. Isn't she in off Willow?
- 49:22Exactly what she's doing, doesn't she?
- 49:24They are not the savages you led us to believe.
- 49:28We fought on this soil with that proper respect for that dead.
- 49:33And all the acting in this, everybody is just one Hunt is
- 49:35right in it. No one is.
- 49:37I don't know does this story does get well.
- 49:39It does get criticism for being a bit over the top, but I don't
- 49:42think it is because they, you know, the the.
- 49:45Did you see that? She got an OBE.
- 49:48Yeah. Jean Marsh got an OBE.
- 49:49Yeah. I didn't well.
- 49:52Not for Battlefield, particularly other workers, you
- 49:56know. We were together in the woods of
- 49:59Cellar Dolls. Imagine getting her getting that
- 50:01thing pinned on her. I loved Battlefield Episode 2.
- 50:04She could absolutely turn up at Buckingham Palace dressed like
- 50:07that. You know, that fabulous
- 50:09breastplate. Oh yeah, Do you know what Sarah
- 50:12Jane Adventures? That Michael Carey directed.
- 50:16The Ross Abbott One. The Secrets of the Stars.
- 50:20And but also Ronnie's first one with the Clown and Bradley
- 50:23Walsh. That's oh, here we go.
- 50:25I love that, yeah. But the lights all go out and
- 50:27everyone's screaming. This is nice, though this is
- 50:29unusual. And just all the next day it's.
- 50:31Coming up, he's going through the garden and it's been a
- 50:34terrible storm. I love a pub garden like.
- 50:36This. But you know what?
- 50:37I read it. I had a read a review once.
- 50:39Yeah, that said, that Sylvester record was more convincing
- 50:42popping a bag of crisps than it was delivering his speech.
- 50:45He's, I think he's, I don't have any criticism for Sylvester
- 50:49McCoy this. Is the first story with his new
- 50:51brown jacket. Oh, yeah, Because they filmed
- 50:55these ones out of sequence, didn't they?
- 50:56And then they were broadcast indifferent.
- 50:58So I Yeah. Oh, Bambera and Anselin are
- 51:03sleeping together right now, and he's handcuffed.
- 51:07She's taken advantage of him handcuffed.
- 51:09She sings a type. I don't.
- 51:10Show where is you think I don't understand.
- 51:12Where's the rest of unit while this is all happening?
- 51:15They turn up later, don't they? For the fire, think.
- 51:17She'd be able to phone some back.
- 51:19Oh, and Brigadier? He's still in the helicopter.
- 51:22Why? Why have they got carrier bags
- 51:24over there? I.
- 51:25Think that's just simonizing, isn't it?
- 51:26That's how you looked. This is a very bug.
- 51:28So you know they like going back to helicoptering bugs exactly.
- 51:32It's very, very prescient. I think you would have got.
- 51:35Was that supposed? To be more helicopter in further
- 51:39series if they carried on unit in helicopter you.
- 51:41Like a bit of a helicopter. I love helicopters.
- 51:44Oh, come on then, I've. Never done that.
- 51:45Actually I don't think I want to go in one but.
- 51:47I hear they're they're a wee bit rickety.
- 51:50Don't know Annika Rice with me legs dangling out as you go from
- 51:53one end of the country to the other.
- 51:54Do you? Know what it's a bit like
- 51:55challenge Annika, 'cause she's been off the story going around.
- 51:59There you can get it to how many locations in the UK in 40
- 52:02minutes and the biggest is. Still, I would like to say she.
- 52:04Does have the help of Wincy Willis you?
- 52:06Know. Yeah, Well, that's who the
- 52:07Brigadier needs. Wincy Willis from London.
- 52:10You're on your way to Carbury. Alistair Carbury?
- 52:13No. The clue.
- 52:13What would the clue be? Oh God.
- 52:17Everything else? Propaganda.
- 52:18No, it'll be something like Arthurian legend by the lake,
- 52:23where ale is brewed and and and Braille is at the bar.
- 52:31Hello. Yes, Keith thinks he can see
- 52:33ABBC crew down there filming Doctor Who.
- 52:36They've, they've crashed the. Warhead into the lake.
- 52:44Like the point of archaeology, Mark is to carefully recover the
- 52:47past. And This is why we love Ace
- 52:49blowing things up. That's what you like as a child.
- 52:51Are you all right? Yeah, that was the coolest thing
- 52:53ever to do for this kind of stuff, to watch these guys.
- 52:55Encouraging kids to be arsonists and.
- 52:58That's what you. Like demolitionists?
- 53:00Don't you? Yeah.
- 53:01Love blowing things up like and this is.
- 53:04That's why Ace was brilliant. Nobody let Mark babysit their
- 53:07children, all right? They go.
- 53:11We're going to turn into terrorists, OK, I love that bit.
- 53:16Now she goes, I think I may have missed done the timing.
- 53:20One of these days we'll have a talk about acceptable safety
- 53:23measures. It's all right.
- 53:28It's just too tempting. Oh, this line.
- 53:32Just speak Czechoslovakian only when, I don't know.
- 53:36She's really fun and she has a really, really sad death.
- 53:39I know, I know. Oh my.
- 53:41God, can you quote this bit? Come on.
- 53:44Call me like my lady again, I'll break your nose.
- 53:47Do. You.
- 53:51Know what can I just say? I've got the weird fetish about
- 53:54Doctor Who set in green, green forests.
- 53:57It's a classic location like. Pyramid of Mars, Android
- 54:00Invasion, Seeds of Doom, Visitation.
- 54:04I just love it when we go into the forest.
- 54:09So you know when the helicopter lands and blows up, Yeah, well,
- 54:14they didn't blow up an actual helicopter.
- 54:16I think it was a well, not a fake version.
- 54:20Yeah. I don't know how they did it.
- 54:21I think they only had one try. I.
- 54:23Wonder where that church is? I'd like to go and visit there.
- 54:26Yeah, what Gene Marsh is wearing as well that copper, copper
- 54:30press play, press play, it's. It's.
- 54:33Beautiful, I was just. Going to say copper tits,
- 54:38hashtag, cup of tits. It's a wonderful costume.
- 54:42But This is why she's so complex.
- 54:44So she's going to teach them the limits of their technology.
- 54:48But then she pays for the drinks later, doesn't she?
- 54:50By giving June Bland her sight bag.
- 54:53Then she murders Lavelle for the information.
- 54:55She's so interesting. They're not just what are they
- 55:00called, as I say, 1 dimensional characters.
- 55:02Yeah, two-dimensional characters, I mean.
- 55:04I think someone's like Chao Young is fairly one-dimensional.
- 55:06Yeah, but they don't. Yeah, but she hasn't got that
- 55:07much to do really. But what she does in her lines
- 55:10are are brilliant. But yeah, you've got that logic
- 55:14for more gain. Like you say, there is a world
- 55:17there that has been thought about.
- 55:19History as well, yeah, the whole this whole story is built on her
- 55:23history with Arthur, and we learn in episode 4 is that she's
- 55:26in love with him still and she's angry because basically ditched
- 55:31her off for the round table. Do you think they had it off on
- 55:36the round? Literally, I knew you were going
- 55:38to say that when Moni said Round table.
- 55:39Sorry, sorry. This is a very low budget
- 55:45helicopter crash though, because you've just got a helicopter
- 55:47with a bit of smoke coming out the bottom of it.
- 55:49Is that a set? Yeah, this concrete tunnel I for
- 55:52years I thought this was outside, you know time in Irani
- 55:56esque concrete tunnel, but it's a SAR apparently did.
- 56:00You see that being on the info text about concrete being used
- 56:02in the Roman Empire. 500 BCI didn't know that.
- 56:09No, use concrete. I got a little bit confused in
- 56:12the story why there was a concrete tunnel here but the
- 56:14Doctor is supposed to have built.
- 56:15It but. The Doctor is supposed to do
- 56:17that, no? It's an airlock.
- 56:20It spits out later on under the water.
- 56:22It I think the from going, you've only got that tunnel
- 56:27scene there to connect all of that green sword area and
- 56:31underwater it's not until you see that model shot later on,
- 56:34it's not always clear, is it? And.
- 56:38Maybe because they cut out. If you've got the VHS version,
- 56:41you've got the twinkly staircase because they cut out all of
- 56:43that. You go from this underground
- 56:46archaeological Dick to this bright studio and it's the
- 56:49Kinect just isn't really there, I don't think, in terms of where
- 56:53stuff is. Did you see that?
- 56:55Apparently this was supposed to be 3 parts all on location
- 56:58originally. Well, I think it's lit well
- 57:00enough. What I'm going?
- 57:02To turn these info texts off because you're just sitting
- 57:04there reading. Oh, it's interesting, people
- 57:05might want to know. But we've unlearned.
- 57:08Things about the story. They can put the info takes on
- 57:10themselves, can't they? Because here are convention
- 57:12anecdotes. No, It's supposed to be 3 parts,
- 57:15all set on location, and I I think this is lit well enough
- 57:19that you could convince be convinced this was all set on
- 57:22location, don't you think? Apart from the the spaceship,
- 57:25yeah. That's set in Pinky bottom that
- 57:28bit, so why is she sending Mordred away?
- 57:33This is, I don't know. He's supposed to be leading the
- 57:36army, isn't he? Or.
- 57:38Oh, I'm not sure. But she she lets him die later.
- 57:41Doesn't she die? Well, my son, this is very
- 57:46strange, this bit. With more game meeting the
- 57:49villain. And the hero, me and I have a
- 57:51little chin wag. Yeah, but I suppose for the
- 57:54Brigadiers point of view, he doesn't know exactly what's been
- 57:58going on. They haven't attacked him or
- 58:01anything. Oh, do you know what?
- 58:03I use that line all the time. I'm at work.
- 58:05How goes the day? I've had better.
- 58:10It's nice that she gives them the warning, though.
- 58:12Next time we meet. All right, I'm going to kill
- 58:14you. And the Brigadier?
- 58:15By this point, he's met so many race he knows what to expect
- 58:19now. He's not met.
- 58:20Her. He's a wiser.
- 58:21Brigadier Marsh before. He's a wiser Brigadier.
- 58:25Isn't it strange that in the classic series Nicholas Courtney
- 58:29and Jean Marsh, first and Last Story was together?
- 58:32Oh, yes. I'm not just pretty.
- 58:35Yeah. Oh, I'd love her.
- 58:39Oh. Apparently this bit with James
- 58:41Ellis, right where he's quoting this, wasn't in the script.
- 58:43It just started doing it and went, Oh well, let's just stick
- 58:45it in, shall we I? Thought it was a bit odd when I.
- 58:47First watched it I. Like the the light going through
- 58:50the ceiling. Yeah, the sword.
- 58:51Is it clear that it's underwater?
- 58:53I'm sorry, everyone. I keep it a rubber itch.
- 58:56I keep being a negative. Rich.
- 58:57Rich. I won't.
- 58:59Honestly. Oh, this is terrible.
- 59:02Yeah, this is Saturday morning. I'm.
- 59:04Kicking. Fish It's a fish head with dry.
- 59:07Ice. Yeah, I don't.
- 59:08Not sure if the fish do. You know, remember that show
- 59:10Funhouse? It's a whole Oh my God.
- 59:13Yeah, with the fries. Is to be with the.
- 59:14Twins. Is it Melanie Martina?
- 59:16It's more like patchar bars thinking about.
- 59:19You. Know at the end where they go
- 59:20round to the carts in the fun house and they'll go 2 blonde
- 59:22and they're like yeah let's count them and you got and they
- 59:24go we've got one. 2. 345, yeah. I was just using.
- 59:34I was referencing it to make a point.
- 59:36Yeah, no, it's yeah, that looks like.
- 59:37Something else? It looks like something you'd go
- 59:39for. It.
- 59:41Look, these terrible polystyrene teeth, then that reminds me of
- 59:44of a dantology. Teeth.
- 59:46Teeth. The scientific study of teeth.
- 59:49What's that from? Terror the Zygons.
- 59:51That's right, a set of giant molars that can cut through rock
- 59:55as easily as paper. So now this is where we get the
- 59:59bit cut out. So they go straight in there and
- 1:00:02they're off their. Mouth and they're going down the
- 1:00:04stairs, aren't they? And I suppose the downness helps
- 1:00:07realise that you're going underground.
- 1:00:08Literally like that, you'd have a spaceship underground with a
- 1:00:10fish head to get in. Wow.
- 1:00:13What? What?
- 1:00:14What would you have? Do you not think right when Kev
- 1:00:16McCulloch plays his music and the nights sort of storm off
- 1:00:19like that? Looks like they're all going off
- 1:00:20to a gay disco. I've been to a.
- 1:00:24Few like that, you know, they're all dressed up like Knights.
- 1:00:32Oh, this is where they're talking about.
- 1:00:34Hang on, what is it? The science, which is
- 1:00:36indistinguishable from magic and magic, which is
- 1:00:39indistinguishable from science. Brilliant Doctor Who concept.
- 1:00:42From which story? The demons.
- 1:00:45The demons. Science, Miss Hawthorne.
- 1:00:49Oh, that's what this means. This is Miss Hawthorne in the
- 1:00:51pub as a regular. You don't need a Miss Hawthorne.
- 1:00:54You've got June Bland and Xiao Yung the.
- 1:00:57Signs are there for all to. See.
- 1:00:59I cast. The.
- 1:01:00Rules only this. Morning.
- 1:01:03Oh, here we go. It's a big.
- 1:01:04Question about Nicholas Courtney in this story Yeah.
- 1:01:07Has he put on a little weight? Not.
- 1:01:10I think he's filling out in that unit costume, you know?
- 1:01:14No, don't worry. He's fabulous and I love him.
- 1:01:17But if I wore that cuff stream, I'd look like that as well.
- 1:01:19So. Here we are.
- 1:01:20Here's the model shot of the spaceship.
- 1:01:21What do you think of this or the design?
- 1:01:22I I like the design, but I don't think the model shots.
- 1:01:25It doesn't convince me. It actually feels like it's been
- 1:01:28shot in a fish tank. Well, it probably has.
- 1:01:31I know, but it doesn't look like that, is it?
- 1:01:34Oh, this is brilliant. I'm going to have a moment.
- 1:01:36Now as this thing comes out, because I'm going to go back to
- 1:01:39being nine years old again, this was.
- 1:01:41So when you first watched, it was so excited.
- 1:01:44So it was this green thing comes out and.
- 1:01:48But it might. It's so.
- 1:01:49Exciting. It was like, how are they going
- 1:01:51to get out of this, this action-packed moment?
- 1:01:54It was it was brilliant. In my 9 year old head I could
- 1:01:57not figure out what it was and I think that's what was scary and
- 1:02:00just seeing the rest of my quite going throwing him about the
- 1:02:03set. But again, that gets a
- 1:02:04criticism. But no, it's.
- 1:02:06What the the effect? Just the over the over silliness
- 1:02:11physical silliness of oh. Because then it has that great
- 1:02:14climax when it's Brigadier, you know, which slips on the thing,
- 1:02:19doesn't it? And gets rid of it.
- 1:02:20Oh, here we go. So what's it supposed to be?
- 1:02:24I know it's an automatic. Defence, yeah, it's like a.
- 1:02:27Why does it look like that? I don't know.
- 1:02:29Well, it's it's sort of fish themed, doesn't it?
- 1:02:32It's like an eel. Come on, can you do a favour
- 1:02:34eel? Because you've been to more
- 1:02:35conventions than me, so. You've heard a girl.
- 1:02:37Bang on about this bloody story and the tank.
- 1:02:39Oh, we can't so. Can you can you tell?
- 1:02:41Everybody. I'm not telling everyone about
- 1:02:42the tank and. Then they all turn around
- 1:02:44everybody and we're wearing eye patches.
- 1:02:45I've heard that so much. Yeah.
- 1:02:47I mean. By all accounts, it was the one
- 1:02:50time Sylvester McCoy got to be genuinely heroic because he
- 1:02:54screamed. Doctor Who care cheats death,
- 1:02:57Yeah, and all of that. But do you know what I love?
- 1:03:00This Being filled up with water. Yeah, this is such.
- 1:03:03A brilliant. It's so real, isn't it?
- 1:03:05Because actually you don't really get in terms of doctor
- 1:03:08you compared. I mean the nearest the last
- 1:03:10physical thing like this you had was probably Colin Baker in the
- 1:03:14end of trial of a terminal going in the mud.
- 1:03:16You know when they do sort of when it's sort of it's in that
- 1:03:18category, isn't it, When you're actually dunking people in
- 1:03:21things? But can.
- 1:03:23I make you. Seem to make a point about this
- 1:03:25right to me. I think it's brilliant.
- 1:03:27You know that people shouldn't extend their awareness and have
- 1:03:32shots of Doctor Who drowning. We're doing it again, aren't we?
- 1:03:36We're doing it again. Oh, that was amazing.
- 1:03:40That episode, we had Nicholas Courtney join the action.
- 1:03:43We had Jean Marsh join the action where Sophie Aldrin
- 1:03:46nearly drowned. Sorry.
- 1:03:47That's not why. But I mean.
- 1:03:51There's only one thing I'd I'd say as a criticism not enough
- 1:03:54Angela Bruce. Not there's actually know what
- 1:03:57this imagine if this was a six parter and you all those
- 1:04:00characters have got a bit more time.
- 1:04:01For it, Well, it's got to be a three.
- 1:04:03Part. I mean, I know I've just
- 1:04:04complained about Nicholas Courtney taking two episodes in
- 1:04:06a helicopter. You probably have three
- 1:04:08episodes. If he stopped off at a briefing
- 1:04:11we could Caitlyn through Stewart.
- 1:04:13We could have had. No, we could.
- 1:04:15Have met Shao Young's family. Sharon's family, we could have
- 1:04:17had a bit more Doris. If it was, if it were rushing
- 1:04:19dates as time. Doris's family true.
- 1:04:21We would have met Missus Young by now, and she'd be well.
- 1:04:24She'd be in the TARDIS. Family would be there, yeah.
- 1:04:28Do you know what can I just say? You know, they say if you say it
- 1:04:30three times then a big finish spin off emerges.
- 1:04:33Here we go. The Adventures of Shao Young.
- 1:04:35Yes. Please.
- 1:04:37I think she's so fun. Oh yeah.
- 1:04:43The. Hamster with a blunt pen knife
- 1:05:17for doing quicker. Quicker Welcome back to
- 1:05:24Harvester with a Blunt Penknife, the Doctor Who Coventry Podcast.
- 1:05:28Dodger and Coke, Pat. Anything with the beer?
- 1:05:33I am here today with Mr. Mark Rawlings.
- 1:05:36Mark, I've got a question for you about your own podcast to
- 1:05:39watch. Who?
- 1:05:40Of course, yes. Well, I mean, every single time
- 1:05:43you come in here, I ask him for a little update about what
- 1:05:45you've been up to lately in your podcast.
- 1:05:47Oh yeah, we're on season 14 at the moment.
- 1:05:49Is it going down well? It's all right.
- 1:05:51Yeah, I seem to recall Miss Sarah Chew was not keen on the
- 1:05:54mask of Bandragra. No.
- 1:05:56Well, neither of us were on that one.
- 1:05:57She was not keen on the face of evil.
- 1:06:00Nervous. That one, really.
- 1:06:01Are you a Doctor Who fan at all? Just getting into that, Leela's
- 1:06:06just come into it. So it's fun talking about a new
- 1:06:09companion. We had Sarah Jane for so long
- 1:06:11and I think Leela is going to be very because Sarah's not seen
- 1:06:15any, you know, any of the show before.
- 1:06:17So seeing her react to what Lila's doing, I think it's going
- 1:06:20to be very interesting. Dipping your tones into the
- 1:06:22talons of Wen Chiang. Very soon, yeah.
- 1:06:25In. Fact, you're you're whoring
- 1:06:27yourself out on two podcasts to do that, aren't you?
- 1:06:29Yeah, you're doing it for this thing as well.
- 1:06:31At once, Yeah, I know. Grief.
- 1:06:34You're obsessed, man. Well, we're here today to watch
- 1:06:38Episode 3 of Battlefield is Does this suffer from the usual
- 1:06:44Episode 3 lag or? I think there's some great stuff
- 1:06:47in there, no? There isn't it?
- 1:06:48Never. It doesn't have that lag at all.
- 1:06:50No, does. Isn't the one where Angela Bruce
- 1:06:52has a machine gun when she's coming out the top of the deck
- 1:06:54chair? I think it starts in in part
- 1:06:57three we get some of that don't. Worry.
- 1:06:59They think she's dead, don't they?
- 1:07:00Oh my God. It's got the stone circle
- 1:07:03scenes. It's.
- 1:07:03Got everything in it. What do you call me?
- 1:07:05Brilliant, you didn't you call me stupid?
- 1:07:09I'm not a freak. What?
- 1:07:13Can we do the whole thing? Oh my God, yeah.
- 1:07:16That's. So much fun.
- 1:07:17And yeah, I'm still really enjoying it.
- 1:07:20Still it's it's just the pace of this doesn't slow down.
- 1:07:26I think that's why I like it. I I think it's stuff like okay,
- 1:07:31Happiness Patrol or something. I know, I know.
- 1:07:34Gregory's favorite? Loads of people love happiness
- 1:07:36draw. I just find it a bit, some of it
- 1:07:39a bit dull and slow. I don't know if it's in the.
- 1:07:42Studio Candy Man's the best thing about it.
- 1:07:44What time do you call I? Just, I don't know it.
- 1:07:47It doesn't have the pace of of these later stories.
- 1:07:51Oh, well, now you've torn into other Hamster contributors.
- 1:07:55Shall we go into Episode 3? It's Mark Whitmanis his
- 1:07:57favorite. Yeah.
- 1:07:58Well, yeah, Have people have a have a proper fight over trying
- 1:08:02to. Do that.
- 1:08:02Why do people love fappers Patron so much?
- 1:08:04Battlefield is where it's at, everyone.
- 1:08:06Battlefield is where the fun is at.
- 1:08:08I think that is a singularly market audience opinion.
- 1:08:12Do you know? Shall we watch Episode 3?
- 1:08:14Yes, I'll. Tell you then you're on the
- 1:08:16remote there we. Go Where is it?
- 1:08:18OK. The dongle, Whatever you happen
- 1:08:21to call your your debris. What's another name for a
- 1:08:24remote? I don't know.
- 1:08:27Here we go. Here we are.
- 1:08:28We're in the lovely purple vortex.
- 1:08:32Yeah, you know, when he says a piece of chalk.
- 1:08:35Don't worry, I got it on the dartboard.
- 1:08:38What does that mean? He.
- 1:08:39Got it from the dartboard in the pub.
- 1:08:42Oh, I thought it was like a magical dartboard he was talking
- 1:08:45about. Oh, he got it from inside the
- 1:08:49pub. Yeah, for.
- 1:08:50God sakes. Oh, Sophie Aldridge.
- 1:08:57Sophie Aldridge, Book from the 90s.
- 1:08:59Ace The Inside Story. Do you know what?
- 1:09:02That is actually the best thing she's ever put out.
- 1:09:04It's brilliant. All about her time, all her
- 1:09:05purse. It's her and Mike Tucker.
- 1:09:07The special future is. Great chapter each on all of her
- 1:09:10stories. And it's it's mainly, I mean,
- 1:09:14the text is quite large and quite.
- 1:09:15She didn't actually write tons, but there's brilliant photos of
- 1:09:19her time in it and recollections.
- 1:09:21Well, I'd rather read that than Andrew Carmel script, Doctor.
- 1:09:24I threw that across the wall. I tell you, Oh no.
- 1:09:27And here we are. Ace of Glass is about to it's.
- 1:09:31About I think. I think given the fact that it
- 1:09:33all went horribly. Wrong.
- 1:09:33I mean, that is a lot of water to go all over the floor.
- 1:09:36There's wires all over the floor.
- 1:09:38Everyone was jumping up on the chairs.
- 1:09:41Even Sylvester McCoy standing there in the middle of the road.
- 1:09:45Somebody let me out. I.
- 1:09:48Don't want. To be going to an alternative
- 1:09:50reality where everyone got electrocuted on battlefield and
- 1:09:53Doctor Who was cancelled, never happened again.
- 1:09:56I mean seen. In Dalek, where he electrocutes
- 1:09:59everybody with the water, it'd be like that, wouldn't it?
- 1:10:02Like that from the old crew cast and crew battlefield.
- 1:10:04Imagine somebody had died, I think.
- 1:10:07We would have been denied all those big finished performances
- 1:10:09from Sophie Aldrin. Boy, you never would have seen
- 1:10:12him on that screen in Brentwood. Cinema Where it?
- 1:10:15Was no BBV no my God ohh God honestly.
- 1:10:21The delights we would have missed out.
- 1:10:22I mean, obviously we are pleased they're still.
- 1:10:24Alive. The last of that episode of
- 1:10:26Doctor Who would have been What's the last of 25?
- 1:10:29Greatest Show in the Galaxy? Greatest Show in the Galaxy?
- 1:10:31The last line would have been I always found clowns, I bet.
- 1:10:35Why do I give? Him a loose.
- 1:10:38Oh, do you like Ace coming out the water now?
- 1:10:40It's a It's a brilliant moment, isn't it?
- 1:10:42It's a. Perfect bit wonky though.
- 1:10:44That's a bit. Try holding a sword underwater,
- 1:10:49though, I think she does a good. Job doing our own thing, Yeah.
- 1:10:52Going underwater and knowing which way is up and actually
- 1:10:55fought sophildre to go in there and do it.
- 1:10:57Can I just say as well, apparently there were rats all
- 1:10:59in that water, so for her to go in there and do that, that is
- 1:11:02props to her. Oh, make a horse sick, that
- 1:11:06would. Winifred, look at her.
- 1:11:13I feel like every single shot. Marcus Gilbert knows exactly
- 1:11:17where the camera is. He's.
- 1:11:20Great. Is he in that episode of
- 1:11:22Jonathan Creek? Yeah, he's a naturist.
- 1:11:24Yeah, that's. The only other thing I've seen
- 1:11:25them in. Wonder.
- 1:11:26You remember that it's cut. It's touch her out for the
- 1:11:29Elfing. You don't see it.
- 1:11:32They put like teapots and cups in front of it.
- 1:11:34Really well done. Oh.
- 1:11:37Hang on, there's a little bit of the info text here, so.
- 1:11:40I'm so glad you put this on. Oh, let's show you.
- 1:11:43But again, she hasn't. Actually, she's already out of
- 1:11:45the story. Unfortunately, I'm a Rover
- 1:11:47reaching again. She's already out of the story.
- 1:11:49Do you think this has too many characters?
- 1:11:52Yeah, I think, yeah. And then they have to get rid of
- 1:11:54loads of them and everyone just disappears when they go off in a
- 1:11:57unit truck, they. Will.
- 1:11:58Just get carted off and you don't get a proper.
- 1:12:00Recorded clouded around this set.
- 1:12:02It's a great part, I think. It's a bit little bit too much,
- 1:12:04but. He loves getting his ass in the
- 1:12:06air though, doesn't he? Do you remember in Survival when
- 1:12:10he's hanging off that sofa and his butt is in the air?
- 1:12:13Trust you to remember all these. It's like being in a case order,
- 1:12:17honestly. You see this thing that the
- 1:12:19Brigadier steps on? It's like a hexagonally
- 1:12:22triangly. I do.
- 1:12:23See it? Yes, I do.
- 1:12:24Props watch. I don't know this is a fact.
- 1:12:27What do you? Think it is.
- 1:12:28Isn't did that used to be on the old TARDIS console?
- 1:12:31What was seaweed covered off? It not the.
- 1:12:33Seaweed bit just the hexagonal bit.
- 1:12:35The Season 18 Console 19. Clayton Hickman, because he's
- 1:12:43he's done lots of TARDIS work, isn't he?
- 1:12:44I don't know. I might not be on the TARDIS,
- 1:12:46but I feel like I've seen that the hexagon thing and they've
- 1:12:50added a bit of seaweed to it for this time.
- 1:12:52Oh, June Bland. Oh, come quickly, Patrick.
- 1:12:55What do you think? Of my active.
- 1:13:00She's great though, isn't she? She's utterly convincing.
- 1:13:03She's brilliant in this. Oh my God, Winifred is so good.
- 1:13:10Is she very respectful of the Brigadier when he comes out?
- 1:13:13Yeah, well, they don't get that much time together.
- 1:13:17You love the fact that he knows it's the Doctor straight away
- 1:13:21because he's also in the air and he's in a lot of trouble.
- 1:13:23Who else would it be? Oh.
- 1:13:27My gosh. Jean Marsh staring off the
- 1:13:30camera. Is that a wig she's wearing, do
- 1:13:34you think? I think so, yes.
- 1:13:36And a very cheap crown. I think you can buy those in
- 1:13:40Poundland, you know, at the right time of the year.
- 1:13:43It's a great outfit if you enter a Doctor Who themed Halloween
- 1:13:46party. Did you hear the story she had
- 1:13:48about her crystal ball? Yeah, it's really great.
- 1:13:51So apparently, you know those awful white fit light fittings
- 1:13:55that she's got the white ones from Next that she actually has
- 1:13:57as a crystal ball. That was the prop for the
- 1:14:00rehearsals. And then she thought she was
- 1:14:02going to get a real crystal ball.
- 1:14:05And then when she didn't get one, she does this.
- 1:14:07She does this voice and goes. But I really wanted my crystal.
- 1:14:11Ball. G marsh is great.
- 1:14:15This whole scene this is actually probably my favorite
- 1:14:17scene in battlefield in this where she gets her sight back
- 1:14:25and then we have what's the name of this unit Lady Lavelle.
- 1:14:28Lavelle. And went the demise of Lavelle.
- 1:14:32It's just. Actually, you know you're right
- 1:14:35about the Episode 3, because it's lots of character scenes,
- 1:14:37and that's something that Cartmail really brought into
- 1:14:40Doctor. Lots of character work.
- 1:14:42But you've had all of this builder, you had all these
- 1:14:44different piece people sort of very separately to begin with,
- 1:14:48and they're all slowly merging and crossing over now by Part 3.
- 1:14:51But then you're right in episode 4.
- 1:14:53And then shift. Out a load of he's like, shit.
- 1:14:55I just need to get to the end now and all these people are now
- 1:14:57superfluous. How would Soward?
- 1:14:58Let's just all go. How would Soward do it?
- 1:15:00They'd all die killed. They'd all get.
- 1:15:02Killed. There'd be a massacre behind the
- 1:15:04bar. If it was Eric Saywood, they'd
- 1:15:06all get mowed down. Come quickly, Patrick.
- 1:15:10What I love right? Are you Right?
- 1:15:13I'm? Having a lot of Arthur's Ale.
- 1:15:16You're getting emotional. You're getting emotional over
- 1:15:20Battlefield. What I love is that she kills
- 1:15:24her and I like that. I don't love the fact she kills
- 1:15:26her. Sorry is the fact that she kills
- 1:15:28her and she screams rid off and that and she's all very calm
- 1:15:31about it. Then she just turns around and
- 1:15:32goes. I might get the tab.
- 1:15:35Yeah, but you go from moments to moments to like that.
- 1:15:38That's. How does she know the line about
- 1:15:40getting the tab? Because Lavelle's just said it,
- 1:15:42and she's taken out all the contents of her.
- 1:15:43Brain and it's. Great.
- 1:15:46Oh, that's horrific, isn't it? I can see, Joe, I can see.
- 1:15:57The actress who played Lavelle. I don't know if you just saw
- 1:15:59that on the info text, but I'm going to point out that she, her
- 1:16:03partner, was in fact a famous composer.
- 1:16:06Yeah, yeah. Oh look at this.
- 1:16:11A special effect when she gets merged into the she's just
- 1:16:14ashes. That's brilliant.
- 1:16:16And then yeah, and get the tab. See that it is.
- 1:16:19So I must get the tab. It it means she's not just a one
- 1:16:26note villain. She's capable of mercy.
- 1:16:29She's capable of generosity and she's also a hard ass bitch and
- 1:16:33she'll send her army. After you too.
- 1:16:35Oh, she's. She's magic.
- 1:16:39But you know what? If she was being played by a
- 1:16:41terrible actress, it would just all sink, wouldn't it?
- 1:16:43Oh, if she wasn't as compelling as she is.
- 1:16:47I think the only other person you know you could get June
- 1:16:49Bland, could play more game. You could have it the other way
- 1:16:52around and it would work just as.
- 1:16:54Well, barrel read. Barrel readers More game not.
- 1:16:58Come on, my son. Waiting for me?
- 1:17:05No, I don't know. Come on, Mark, It looks like we
- 1:17:08get the deck chair. Oh, I love this.
- 1:17:13And you know the music in a minute goes.
- 1:17:18I love Kev Mccall's music so disco.
- 1:17:23And you've got this relationship between ants, not Ansley Ansler.
- 1:17:29To get fucking on this pair. Bambera That's a great duo,
- 1:17:34isn't it? Or Double Axe.
- 1:17:35Because then it leads to the bit where Ansley thinks she's dead
- 1:17:38in the last episode and then goes after Mordred, doesn't he?
- 1:17:43And here we are, another battle seat to get more sparklers,
- 1:17:46unfortunately. Yeah, I'm not entirely convinced
- 1:17:50because there's just a bit of smoke and they think they're
- 1:17:51dead. I think maybe.
- 1:17:53If it was a bit lower light, it wasn't like middle of the
- 1:17:55afternoon sunny I. Think maybe that's a.
- 1:17:58Bit darker and a bit more. Yeah, I know.
- 1:18:00But maybe. Couldn't they just put that day
- 1:18:02for night feel right? Yeah, maybe a bit of day for
- 1:18:04night would have helped. Like all this shooting in the
- 1:18:06car though. Yeah, it was quite.
- 1:18:08Dynamic. Isn't it taking ages?
- 1:18:11Yeah, don't want to Brigadier people be sure now too soon.
- 1:18:20Also, I'm doing all the music now and.
- 1:18:21I'm not sure about, yeah, all these soldiers.
- 1:18:26What? They're spark guns.
- 1:18:27I don't know. I'd love a spark gun, you know?
- 1:18:30Trouble is, you went into the tower, one of those, and started
- 1:18:33firing it. You'd get.
- 1:18:34You know. Back in the 80s, you could get
- 1:18:38away with that sort of thing, you know?
- 1:18:42Look, can I saw the info text? I'll talk about the info text.
- 1:18:45Aronovich, that's how you say his name, by the way, did
- 1:18:48everything with an eye for affordability.
- 1:18:51Are you kidding me? I think this was a bit
- 1:18:53ambitious. Well, I think it always would go
- 1:18:55through a a script editor or something to see what was
- 1:18:57affordable or not. Do you?
- 1:18:59Think it would be as exciting if it was called Storm Over a
- 1:19:02Valley on. Probably not.
- 1:19:06Oh, I love this. Stop Merlin.
- 1:19:08No, I will deal with him my own. I mean people both will just
- 1:19:14watch the thing. It's me quoting.
- 1:19:16All the way through. The audio drama.
- 1:19:18But you know, they did a lot of this sort of relationship stuff
- 1:19:21in in Cartmell's time, didn't they?
- 1:19:23They had Ace and Soren. They had Ace and Mike, They had
- 1:19:27Ace and Cara. True.
- 1:19:29That was suggesting a little bit of lesbianism is that he's
- 1:19:32bisexual. I'm sure in the new adventures
- 1:19:37she is. Imagine how that would be for
- 1:19:39representation if AIS and Xiao Yung were in a relationship
- 1:19:42together. That would be amazing.
- 1:19:46Brigadier still hasn't done much fighting, is it?
- 1:19:47Oh, that's why they're waiting for his big climactic moment
- 1:19:50with the Destroyer. Yeah that's a you do bring the
- 1:19:53Brigadier in and again not he doesn't do that much until right
- 1:19:57at the end and he is pivot towards the end but he's so it's
- 1:20:01it feels like he's hanging around waiting for that moment.
- 1:20:03I don't know if you know this, but every time they raise their
- 1:20:05guns, the music goes off. So Bambera just asked Anseline
- 1:20:12if he's married. So is that another way of
- 1:20:15saying, are we fucking tonight? I thought they already did the
- 1:20:19night before in the pub. Oh, that's right.
- 1:20:21Yeah, they were sleeping it off one day afterwards.
- 1:20:24Yeah, Ice is not happy with the Brigadier because he's treating
- 1:20:29her just like any other assistant and she thinks she's a
- 1:20:31bit special, didn't she? It's that.
- 1:20:35It's that, yeah, the childish bit of Ace.
- 1:20:38You know what? I can't notice that Xiao Yung
- 1:20:40has not done much for a little while.
- 1:20:42That's. The thing But there's so and
- 1:20:43here we are, we're cutting out. She can do it herself because,
- 1:20:49forgive me, half an hour ago. She was blind.
- 1:20:57What? Do you think about the Doctor
- 1:20:58having these magical powers in a minute?
- 1:20:59Of course. You want to leave that you know.
- 1:21:02Doesn't he do that in that edited scene from Silver Nemesis
- 1:21:05on the stairs with the people in Windsor Castle?
- 1:21:07Doesn't he? He does that.
- 1:21:09He also says one finger can be a deadly weapon.
- 1:21:12So it is implied that this doctor has these these hypnotic
- 1:21:16abilities. That's true.
- 1:21:17Can I ask you a question? Do you think one finger can be a
- 1:21:20deadly weapon? Absolutely.
- 1:21:21What are you talking about there?
- 1:21:29See, Pierre Wolsey really hasn't done anything at all, has he?
- 1:21:32Well. Not now.
- 1:21:33His bit's over now because they've done the archaeological
- 1:21:35bit and the dig and all what we needed to do there.
- 1:21:38So what else can they do? They're not going to be part of
- 1:21:41the battle, all the sci-fi stuff.
- 1:21:43So. So everyone has to go and.
- 1:21:45But is there a is there a a more subtler way of writing them out
- 1:21:49than just having them all go and often?
- 1:21:50Evacuated in the area? I don't think so, unless, like
- 1:21:53you say you sword kill them. Oh, that's true.
- 1:21:56Oh look, the info take just said that about.
- 1:21:58So whatever. System is spectacles.
- 1:21:59Oh, there. We go.
- 1:22:00You well, believe me, you will not move.
- 1:22:02You will move. Oh.
- 1:22:06Dear There's a lot of extra unit extras as well in this.
- 1:22:10Do you like the continuity reference here?
- 1:22:11You know, talking about the weapons for Cybermen and Yetis
- 1:22:14and Daleks. It's not pivotal stuff, is it?
- 1:22:17You can, It's just nice extra bits and pieces.
- 1:22:20You know, I think there's a big difference between the
- 1:22:23continuity and the Cartmel era and the continuity in the Sword
- 1:22:26era. In a sword era, it's like
- 1:22:28continuity porn. There's a big bully.
- 1:22:31Anyway, look at the size of that one.
- 1:22:33Very impressive, I must say. Go through a dialect.
- 1:22:37Go for anyone, wouldn't it? But the continuity in the Carmel
- 1:22:44era, I feel like it's always story first.
- 1:22:50The story is more important than the continuity.
- 1:22:51I think in the 80s, the mid 80s, the continuity sometimes comes
- 1:22:56first before the story. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:22:59Absolutely. Yeah.
- 1:23:00And that's why this feels a bit more fresher this this time in
- 1:23:03the show. See.
- 1:23:03I'm not sure. Oh wait, no.
- 1:23:05I don't know why Shaw Young's hanging around.
- 1:23:07She's got, she's. Got a set piece isn't.
- 1:23:09She yeah, she needs to hang around.
- 1:23:10What'd you call me? I'm not a freak.
- 1:23:15What? I mean, that dialogue is out of
- 1:23:17this world. Does he say seabird now?
- 1:23:23Oh, maybe he does say seabird, and that's why Bambera's Big
- 1:23:27Finish Box set is called. Hi, yeah, lots of hot soldiers
- 1:23:31in this season, isn't there? This anchor is a fabric.
- 1:23:37You see this photo I I always this line up with the Brigadier
- 1:23:40and everyone. They're looking at the map
- 1:23:42whenever I thought that he was holding the script.
- 1:23:45No, no, it's clearly about. The map, I thought.
- 1:23:47I always thought it was a rehearsal shot when I saw that
- 1:23:49steal of that. It's a bit there, so.
- 1:23:52It's literally just been saying about continuing.
- 1:23:54Yeah, exactly. We've had, we've had the talk.
- 1:23:57About Yeti Alton's Dale excitement Solarians, Silerians
- 1:24:01and now Bessie, Is it a bit much?
- 1:24:06Oh no it's not. She says.
- 1:24:08What does it run on? Petrol or steam?
- 1:24:11It's nice. It's nice to see Bessie, I
- 1:24:13think. Did you just yawn during
- 1:24:14Battlefield? No.
- 1:24:17I think you did you. Though.
- 1:24:20Oh, this is great. And now he says to her, what a
- 1:24:223rd art thou betrothed. All right, look, it's listening.
- 1:24:28All of Gilbert's Road here. Robin of Sherwood Army of
- 1:24:31Darkness. Where was the documentary maker?
- 1:24:33He later produced films about his mountain climbing
- 1:24:36expeditions. This priority is not flogging
- 1:24:38those at the phantom events. Maybe that's where he hurt his
- 1:24:40hand and. When he took up being a
- 1:24:42naturist, do you think they would have had this director
- 1:24:50back Michael Kerrigan again? I think so.
- 1:24:53Because he, I mean, I'm sure he came in, you know, budget wise
- 1:24:57and getting all of this done, there's so much action in this
- 1:24:59to direct. Did you hear the terrible story
- 1:25:02about Michael Kerrigan saying, oh, this isn't Doctor Who is
- 1:25:05best, and they're not the best Doctor and assistant, so let's
- 1:25:07just knock it out. When do you say that?
- 1:25:09Oh, so haven't told me. I can't tell you who is somebody
- 1:25:13who's connected to the program. Apparently he was.
- 1:25:16He was scathing. I still think he he.
- 1:25:19Tried jobs. Yeah, apparently it was there.
- 1:25:22It was a bit like Graham Harper, always about lots of energy, you
- 1:25:25know, that's. What you need, yeah.
- 1:25:26Yeah. Oh, look at the Wayne McCoy
- 1:25:28touches her nose. Where do you, sorry go?
- 1:25:33On Well, no. I was going to say it's a bit
- 1:25:34early. The whole circle, the chalk
- 1:25:38circle, protection, everything. Yeah.
- 1:25:41Have you seen The Hammer? The Devil Ride Rides Out film?
- 1:25:44Because that's exactly what they do.
- 1:25:47I don't know if that's from. It's not from a book, it's not
- 1:25:49from a thing. It's it's been done before
- 1:25:52basically in lots of other similar things because that's
- 1:25:55Christopher Lee and they, I can't remember the devil's
- 1:26:00coming after them. Whatever, said the demons, he's
- 1:26:02like right chalk circle. We have to stay in the circle
- 1:26:05all night and then it sends demons and a big spider and
- 1:26:08stuff to try and lure them out of the circle for protection.
- 1:26:11So it's not like an original concept, but it's great.
- 1:26:14It's Doctor Who's take on it. Fun take on it.
- 1:26:18Look, I can't just say you know, more game as a great villain
- 1:26:20when she looks straight to camera and goes if you live.
- 1:26:25Although did you just see a minute ago, Bessie riding off
- 1:26:28with flames? I know that's a little bit over
- 1:26:30the top. And then she goes, wicked.
- 1:26:32It's like, Oh dear God, that's when everyone turned over to
- 1:26:35Cory, you know? Oh, and here's a first glimpse
- 1:26:39of the Destroyer. Is this the best designed
- 1:26:42monster? Absolutely.
- 1:26:45But in this again, in this, in Season 20, you got the
- 1:26:48Destroyer, you got the Hemovores.
- 1:26:50OK, let's forget the cheater people.
- 1:26:52You've got the Husk. OK, let's forget you've got the
- 1:26:56Destroyer and the Hemovores. They're brilliant.
- 1:26:58They're getting really great with the.
- 1:27:01I look at, you know that's with the big.
- 1:27:03Eyes, I think. Yeah.
- 1:27:04The big bark that looks a bit like me in the mornings.
- 1:27:07What? Sorry Conan, you're going to say
- 1:27:09but you. I don't know, maybe it's are the
- 1:27:12materials and things getting easier to use or cheaper, or are
- 1:27:15they getting different kinds of things to make stuff because
- 1:27:19it's such a level up? I mean, actually, no, it started
- 1:27:21with the Candyman. Really.
- 1:27:23Candyman's great. Yeah.
- 1:27:25The Ted traps. I.
- 1:27:26Was going to say Ted Traps, OK, but can you think of what you
- 1:27:30know? It's a far leap from.
- 1:27:32The verb voice. Oh, what about the lucosa?
- 1:27:36Yeah, I mean, yeah, towards those last few years, they get
- 1:27:39in there, aren't they, with the and I think it's just more
- 1:27:41achievable to do those things. Maybe the last really bad sort
- 1:27:44of design was those two. Doctor Santorin's.
- 1:27:47Oh. I quite like that as well.
- 1:27:49But yeah, they're nothing compared to the Destroyer.
- 1:27:51Oh. God, here we go, here we go,
- 1:27:52here we go. But.
- 1:27:53What did you call me? Just you death or what?
- 1:27:58No, you didn't. I heard you.
- 1:27:59You call me stupid, I'm not a freak.
- 1:28:03What? Oh Mace, are you dumb or what?
- 1:28:07I don't think this is it's but it's interesting isn't it?
- 1:28:11Because Morgan is making her behave in a racist way and Ace
- 1:28:15is so anti racist because she's got this running thread doesn't
- 1:28:19she this season about her friend?
- 1:28:21Is it Manisha? Yeah.
- 1:28:24And I think, yeah, you can. Yeah, you can get.
- 1:28:28There's so many different layers to this because actually as a as
- 1:28:31a child watching this. Sorry, it's just literally
- 1:28:34saying about the Devils Rise out.
- 1:28:36As as you know, you're watching this as a child, some of that
- 1:28:38probably doesn't go into your head or you know it's it's a
- 1:28:42scary situation. You know that there's something
- 1:28:44manipulating them but then you've got these other layers
- 1:28:47like you say like race and aces behaviour and Aces history and
- 1:28:51everything under there as well. So it yeah, it can work on lots
- 1:28:56of layers and I think that's really great.
- 1:29:00And the Destroyer. Because I, you know, you've got.
- 1:29:02If you wouldn't, I'm just comparing something like the 70s
- 1:29:05or whatever, and you've got Joe Grant.
- 1:29:06She'd just be in the circle going, no, I can't take it.
- 1:29:09You know, I don't think you have those layers.
- 1:29:12Nominal. I'm just saying something in
- 1:29:13like the 70s or you just wouldn't have those layers of.
- 1:29:18I hate to interrupt you, but I just disco music over all the
- 1:29:22fights. It's very strange, isn't it?
- 1:29:25Isn't it? Because there's all this dry
- 1:29:26ice, corpses, people bouncing off trampolines.
- 1:29:30But it's. The 80s, Isn't it everything?
- 1:29:31Marigold going. Oh, not Marigold.
- 1:29:33Sorry. Keith McCullough, going.
- 1:29:35It's. Yeah, it's.
- 1:29:40Do you rate Sylvester McCoy here, where he screams he's
- 1:29:43lying about There will be no battlefield.
- 1:29:46There will be no. Battle.
- 1:29:48Hell yeah. Wow.
- 1:29:50If if McCoy doesn't fetch you, pop his cocks.
- 1:29:54Big Finish can call you up, can't they?
- 1:29:57Oh, I love this bit. But you can't hate each other.
- 1:29:59You can't have, you know, Knights of the Round Table and
- 1:30:02all this stuff without a big battle, can you?
- 1:30:05No, but the problem with this scene is, and I hate to go
- 1:30:08Aronovich on you now, that is a thing.
- 1:30:10It's not true is that this would work.
- 1:30:14The scale of Mccoy's performance would work if we were seeing a
- 1:30:18Game of Thrones style, 100,000 people on this battlefield and
- 1:30:22he's screaming his head off. But unfortunately we're in a
- 1:30:24boggy field in Surrey with five extras and it just seems a bit
- 1:30:29over the. Top that shot where he's
- 1:30:31breaking them up. There's no one else around?
- 1:30:33No, it's very tight. It's I reckon it's a Sunday
- 1:30:36morning or something. You know, we've got up the local
- 1:30:39park and said right time to shoot.
- 1:30:41Oh, here we go. I am more gain of the Fay.
- 1:30:47Can I ask you a question about the Destroyer?
- 1:30:50Well, you know the scene in the next episode where he tears his
- 1:30:52chainmail and exposes his hairy chest.
- 1:30:55Have you ever wanted to have sex with a doctor?
- 1:30:57Who? Oh my.
- 1:30:57God no. Let's change the subject.
- 1:31:00OK. And I love that the you're.
- 1:31:03Above that sort. Of thing where he's very he's
- 1:31:07got a wet mouth, hasn't he? It's all dripping.
- 1:31:12Don't you fucking tell me to change the subject.
- 1:31:14Yeah, that's the the level of detail where we're at with
- 1:31:17Doctor Who monsters now. That texture on the face, the
- 1:31:21way that the eyes, you know, like like Jon Pert, we love the
- 1:31:25Draconians. And you've got the the wet
- 1:31:28mouth. Can I just say as well, he is
- 1:31:33the most horniest Doctor Who monster of all time, isn't he?
- 1:31:36I mean, his horns are massive. No, it is.
- 1:31:39I mean. If you had this earlier, you're
- 1:31:40ridiculous. Mary Whitehouse would be.
- 1:31:43She'd be spinning in their grave, wouldn't she?
- 1:31:45She'd be frothing at the mouth if she.
- 1:31:47Saw that coughing at the mouth, wouldn't she?
- 1:31:49Red would be spinning around to. Me.
- 1:31:51It's ridiculous to show these enormous horns.
- 1:31:55And this creature opened his hairy chest.
- 1:32:00For a whole week. It's a great cliffhanger though,
- 1:32:06isn't it? It's so good.
- 1:32:08Like, I can't imagine some kid not watching this going.
- 1:32:10I really want. That turn up, yeah.
- 1:32:14But as well I think like I did mock.
- 1:32:15Some of the dialogue. Bit between aces show you and
- 1:32:17that, but for a kid that's kind of hard hitting, isn't it?
- 1:32:21Or for a kid. In the 80s?
- 1:32:23Maybe not now. Maybe for?
- 1:32:23Me in the. 90s it was. Yeah, but that's we're talking
- 1:32:26about that Bony, wiry Mark Warren, who's seven years old,
- 1:32:29aren't we? I think he was.
- 1:32:32He was an innocent young man. Well, let's get on to part 4.
- 1:32:37OK, see you later. The.
- 1:33:13A hamster with a blunt pen knife for doing.
- 1:33:15Quicker, quicker. Quicker and welcome back to a
- 1:33:22Hamster with a Blunt Pen Knife, the Doctor Who audio commentary
- 1:33:28podcast. I sent a fucking quiz.
- 1:33:31Show I. Was trying.
- 1:33:33To do a. Cuddly toy.
- 1:33:37This is where people commentate on Doctor Who episodes.
- 1:33:41Can I tell you what? Right.
- 1:33:42There's someone at work. Yeah, who does?
- 1:33:45Tunnel is right and he goes on. Good evening, everybody.
- 1:33:48Well, let's see. It sounds.
- 1:33:50Like I don't. Know where that came from?
- 1:33:52Sorry, not change the subject. What we're here to talk about.
- 1:33:55We are currently watching Battlefield.
- 1:33:58Episode No Part. And we're on part 4.
- 1:34:01It's the riveting climax. It's.
- 1:34:04Gone very quick and last week we had the Destroyer ripping out is
- 1:34:08what? He hasn't actually ripped it out
- 1:34:09yet, is he? What?
- 1:34:14The Detroit has just here the right video about to rip his
- 1:34:17armour. He will be ripping his armour
- 1:34:19off very shortly everyone, so stay tuned.
- 1:34:21God and I've been drinking. Anything can happen.
- 1:34:25But we were saying last time, the Mary White House has been
- 1:34:28salivating for a week to find out what happens next.
- 1:34:30She's been very perturbed by the Destroyer's enormous horns.
- 1:34:34Yeah. And mark the BBC novel The
- 1:34:37Shadow of Avalon, Yes, which you could not find on the shelf.
- 1:34:42Yeah. Doctor book.
- 1:34:43It's a Doctor book. It's the same mythology.
- 1:34:45You know it's leaning into all of this.
- 1:34:47Does it directly reference Battlefield?
- 1:34:49That. Point of I think it takes a lot
- 1:34:51of the details, but it's not a sequel to this.
- 1:34:53OK. It's sort of set in the same
- 1:34:55world though. Yeah, it was quite heavily
- 1:34:57criticized, you know, I thought it was rather good.
- 1:34:59And I I'm a bit iffy with Cornell books.
- 1:35:01Have you read or do you know the target of Battlefield?
- 1:35:04The target book. It was Mark Platt.
- 1:35:07So I think he he added a lot of extra world building.
- 1:35:11I think Mr. Aronovich wanted to distance himself from this.
- 1:35:14He wasn't happy with it. Well, we all know he wasn't.
- 1:35:17And then he went and wrote Transit instead.
- 1:35:19Do you know what? Do you remember Transit?
- 1:35:21I didn't read transit. Sequence in transit where
- 1:35:23someone actually says I've still got the taste of semen in my
- 1:35:27mouth. I mean, what is up with the new
- 1:35:29adventures, honest to God? We haven't got any of that in
- 1:35:31Battlefield. Thankfully, no one.
- 1:35:34Tasted semen in battlefield? No, except Mary Whitehouse.
- 1:35:39Sorry. Anyway, let's get back on track,
- 1:35:41shall. We I wish to apologise to the
- 1:35:44family. Of Mary Whitehouse.
- 1:35:47Do you think a lot of people take her name in vain?
- 1:35:50Well, yeah. Excuse me, now you've got a book
- 1:35:52of Mary Whitehouse. I've got her book, yeah.
- 1:35:55Is it an autobiography? Sort of.
- 1:35:57It's about her work. Oh, excuse.
- 1:36:00Me, it's about her work and her life and everything and how she
- 1:36:05started all of the started all of the television, clean up
- 1:36:09television campaign and all of that stuff, is it.
- 1:36:11Interesting. What is.
- 1:36:13Well, the most interesting bit is where she lists all the bits
- 1:36:16of horrible TV that she's watched and what program or what
- 1:36:19happens. No, there's a lot of police
- 1:36:21dramas, a lot of this around the like The Sweeney and stuff.
- 1:36:24She's like this man, man gets stabbed here or you know, this
- 1:36:28prostitute does this and stuff. It's like, oh, Mary.
- 1:36:32I think she wasn't worried about Doctor Who anymore because no
- 1:36:35one was watching it, so there were no kids watching it.
- 1:36:38It is a shame. It is a shame.
- 1:36:40And Jen, we are kicking off the final season of the classic
- 1:36:42series here. Technically, it should have gone
- 1:36:45to the Dogs by this point. Oh, it's yeah, it's sad, isn't
- 1:36:49it? Well, I'll tell you what I don't
- 1:36:52know about you. Yeah.
- 1:36:53Yeah, I'm looking forward to our client.
- 1:36:56Let's go. 321 Let's get that. Going boom, boom, boom,
- 1:36:59everybody. I'm so sorry.
- 1:37:00I keep sniffing, but I sniffed a cat earlier.
- 1:37:04I sniffed a pussy. I.
- 1:37:05Think you're allergic? I.
- 1:37:06Think I'm allergic? To pussy I.
- 1:37:10Think we all knew that the slightest hint of danger my
- 1:37:15pussy's hair stands right on end.
- 1:37:17Oh. Here you are.
- 1:37:17So by episode 4, we're up up to 4 million viewers.
- 1:37:20Lottie outright, people are aware now.
- 1:37:23Oh, the BBC surveyed 392 people about Battlefield and Sylvester.
- 1:37:30Mccoy's doctor was popular. 78% found him likable.
- 1:37:35Why? There you go, More men than
- 1:37:39women liked it. Well, that's hardly a great
- 1:37:40surprise. Like Battlefield?
- 1:37:42Yeah, like the commentary. None of the men like that, did
- 1:37:45they? Right here we are the Destroyer.
- 1:37:50He's a hearing. And we're going to get all of
- 1:37:52Jean Marsh's best scenes in this episode and.
- 1:37:55This is still the pop set, isn't it?
- 1:37:56Just the lighting has just changed the whole vibe of the
- 1:37:59place. It's great.
- 1:38:01Yeah, Do you know they turn this whole set into rubble in a
- 1:38:03minute, don't they? Yeah, it just all goes up, yeah.
- 1:38:07Did you know, Mark? Comedy is very similar to drama.
- 1:38:10It's all a matter of. Time I have an ace.
- 1:38:15Up I sleep. Oh, I love that.
- 1:38:19The look of the Destroyer. I mean, it must have taken some
- 1:38:23work, right? And they do.
- 1:38:26But it's weird, you know, because he dropped into the
- 1:38:28story and then he just sort of goes after about 10.
- 1:38:31Minutes. I know what he's he's he can't.
- 1:38:35Yeah, he doesn't really do. A lot, you know, if he.
- 1:38:37Maybe that's why it's so effective.
- 1:38:39It's dark, It's lit. Well, he's only he's only you
- 1:38:43sparingly. Maybe that's how you do a
- 1:38:45monster. He just sort of stands around a
- 1:38:46bit. But nowadays he'd be up floating
- 1:38:48in the sky, electricity going all around the planet.
- 1:38:50You know, it'd be very epic, wouldn't it?
- 1:38:53Yeah, and you've got here we are.
- 1:38:57More games. Crystal ball.
- 1:38:59IKEA ball. So this is the line that you
- 1:39:03said wasn't in Battlefield McCoy, McCoy goes.
- 1:39:06Or I will decapitate you. I could.
- 1:39:10I've never noticed that before. And I thought when you said
- 1:39:12that, I was like, no, you wouldn't have the doctor saying
- 1:39:15he's going to decapitate. Someone that would never.
- 1:39:17Be in it. He sort of whispers it very low.
- 1:39:19It's not. See, look, it says on the
- 1:39:21Infotech, said McCoy felt the doctor was being affected by
- 1:39:24violence, like a virus or an illness.
- 1:39:26I don't think we're really seeing.
- 1:39:28No, that doesn't come across. I don't think the script really
- 1:39:31explicitly stays here. Maybe he's acting it, but I
- 1:39:34could never really tell when he's acting.
- 1:39:35It's a nice theme to it. Well, how?
- 1:39:37I don't know how intentional that was.
- 1:39:40I think Nicholas Corny was happy to leave.
- 1:39:42Was he? They said they wanted to kill
- 1:39:44him off and he was like, yeah, go on and do it.
- 1:39:46I'll fuck this. Part he's been.
- 1:39:47Away he was in Morton Undead. And then what was the last thing
- 1:39:50before that tear? The Zygons.
- 1:39:51It was a job that he did a long time ago.
- 1:39:53I know he's associated with it a lot, but I.
- 1:39:55Wonder. Actually, you know why they're
- 1:39:56backtracked? Why?
- 1:39:58Aronovich couldn't do it. He's like, couldn't kill him
- 1:40:00off. I wanted to, but I couldn't kill
- 1:40:02him off. This is great.
- 1:40:04Look, she's basically like die well by some.
- 1:40:07Yeah, because the battle is more important than, you know.
- 1:40:12Yeah, so this is. A great build up society.
- 1:40:14This is all great build up and then watch.
- 1:40:17When they when they start moving, the disco music starts
- 1:40:20again. Really.
- 1:40:21Yeah, you've got those, those sort of kicking drums, it's
- 1:40:24like, but at the time, would that have been because it was
- 1:40:29the 80s? I mean, now it's like someone's
- 1:40:31pressed demo on your toy keyboard.
- 1:40:34Did you not see that sequence in Rover sort of darlings where
- 1:40:36he's on his keyboard? It's literally that.
- 1:40:40But yeah, but at the time, were other shows having this similar
- 1:40:42economy or? Who's still having?
- 1:40:44Individual. Absolutely.
- 1:40:46Do you think you you go and watch some kids TV from around?
- 1:40:49This title that anyway so. You really too much.
- 1:40:51So, and you, if you watch it at the time, it wouldn't have stood
- 1:40:54out as much, did you just now it's just dated it.
- 1:40:57I think the music's dated more than anything on screen.
- 1:41:01And it makes you feel a bit cheaper than it actually is,
- 1:41:03which is astonishing given I think Dudley Simpson music made
- 1:41:07it, Doctor Who seem more expensive than it actually was.
- 1:41:10And nowadays they've got the, you know, the whole orchestra,
- 1:41:12haven't they? And the choir and that going
- 1:41:14crazy. But now we've gone the other
- 1:41:15way, a little bit too much. It's too much music because now
- 1:41:17it's been too over the top. Anyway, it's gonna start kind of
- 1:41:20about Marigold again. No, no, I thought.
- 1:41:22Second I canola I love. Second, I Canola's music.
- 1:41:28Yeah. Oh, this is great.
- 1:41:31Jean Marsh has to do. I'm trying to get into the force
- 1:41:34field. Yeah, very good.
- 1:41:35Her hands start shaking. She's really good.
- 1:41:38Yeah, Look at that. You.
- 1:41:41You can't see it, dear viewers, but we can.
- 1:41:44I love her fingernails. Oh, she would do a lovely back
- 1:41:48scratch, wouldn't she, with those.
- 1:41:49Oh, a bit dirty though, wouldn't they?
- 1:41:51You might get a bit of flaky skin all over your back, but
- 1:41:53it'd be worth it. Sorry.
- 1:41:55I'll go and call Jean Marsh up right now and get her to scratch
- 1:41:58her. I.
- 1:41:58Don't think she's with us anymore.
- 1:42:00She is. Is she?
- 1:42:01Yes. Why is she doing a big finish
- 1:42:03then? Because she's not very well.
- 1:42:04I don't think she's a bit past doing any acting now.
- 1:42:07I think she's retired, but she's still alive.
- 1:42:09She's still alive. Oh, and may I say Marek Anton is
- 1:42:13given a proper performance inside that costume.
- 1:42:16But you can, because you can. The mouth moves and the because
- 1:42:20the mask is so well made, you can do that performance, you
- 1:42:25know, and there's all the electronic stuff on the lip the
- 1:42:27making the lips move. You know, you're the bit where
- 1:42:31he starts burying his teeth and starts dribbling.
- 1:42:33Has anything made you dribble like that before?
- 1:42:36No. I saw a program earlier called
- 1:42:38What was it called? The Baking program.
- 1:42:39Oh. Is it impossible?
- 1:42:42Baseball. Bacon.
- 1:42:43Yeah, they're doing these fabulous cakes.
- 1:42:45I was dribbling like that watching that.
- 1:42:47What I obviously. The way that the destroyer shots
- 1:42:50were from below. Yeah, and the lighting.
- 1:42:53The lighting as well. Although in a minute there's
- 1:42:55these green effects. Janet Fielding's right when
- 1:42:57she's bitching about it. And behind the sofas, these
- 1:43:00green effects that's come spitting out the windows are not
- 1:43:03the best, yo. I suppose.
- 1:43:05Oh, this is Mccoy's worst bit if they're dead.
- 1:43:11But then he goes at all cute. Ace.
- 1:43:13Xiaoyong, are you alive? And they're all covered in
- 1:43:18polystyrene and bits of set. Now look, the infotex is telling
- 1:43:23us that the Doctor doesn't in fact pick his hat up off the
- 1:43:25floor when it just fell down, but when he goes to the side,
- 1:43:28he's wearing it. Continuity era.
- 1:43:30Is that a problem? I've never noticed that unless I
- 1:43:33was told. Look at what they've done for
- 1:43:35this pub. Peter Warp is not going to go
- 1:43:37for a sleep upstairs. State of it.
- 1:43:41What's her name? Oh, not at all.
- 1:43:45What? Oh no.
- 1:43:48Is it inappropriate? Maybe.
- 1:43:50OK. Is it about someone in this
- 1:43:54room? No.
- 1:43:55OK. I don't.
- 1:43:56I don't need to know. Did you notice all that debris
- 1:43:58that fell over them there? Well.
- 1:44:00I was going to say that she's been covered in Polyfyrin.
- 1:44:03As well. And this is where Shao Young's
- 1:44:05not needed anymore. So she doesn't really.
- 1:44:07Do it. No.
- 1:44:07Yeah, Yeah, she she's just kept behind, isn't she, for that
- 1:44:11scene or Ace has got somebody. She's in that very charming
- 1:44:15scene at the end. But that's nice that she's a
- 1:44:17she. Yeah, that she's still stuck
- 1:44:18around. But what happens to, you know,
- 1:44:21we don't see her after this very much.
- 1:44:22Exotic alien swords are easy to come by.
- 1:44:26Marks are rare. Actually, the marks are 10 a
- 1:44:31penny. Jesus, there's so many of you
- 1:44:32out there. Oh, don't mean you.
- 1:44:34Oh, shut up now, OK? And actually there's not in
- 1:44:41terms of sets, what have we got? We've had the pub, we've had
- 1:44:45that where that what's it called?
- 1:44:48Barn thing that they're in dresses several times and the
- 1:44:53spaceship is only the three indoor sets, isn't there?
- 1:44:55Very little bit and lots of location work.
- 1:44:58I love this scene where the camera pans over the
- 1:45:01battlefield. Winifred looks at the young
- 1:45:04soldier who's dead and he says a good fight and she's disgusted.
- 1:45:07It shows their different moralities.
- 1:45:09Yeah, but also, she's been going right?
- 1:45:11Come on there, everyone with a sword.
- 1:45:13You say. Oh, with that going.
- 1:45:14Around. Angela Bruce was saying right
- 1:45:16that she had training with the sword and then she went, oh,
- 1:45:18let's just do it. And she.
- 1:45:20She jumped in. Can I say I don't think we've
- 1:45:24talked about Angela Bruce's Bambera enough in this we.
- 1:45:26Have an athlete. And I feel like she deserves
- 1:45:29more, more comment. She's she's just charismatic as
- 1:45:33hell. If we'd have come back to her in
- 1:45:35another story, I think we would have seen her a bit.
- 1:45:37Kate Stewart in the midst of Unit I.
- 1:45:40Mean if this if we'd had the Lost Season 27 as done by Big
- 1:45:44Finish. Oh, animal.
- 1:45:46With Animal not the best for Angela, Bruce or Bambera in that
- 1:45:52particular story, So I'm very glad it's all been redeemed with
- 1:45:55Bambera's own series on Big Finish, that animal and in fact
- 1:45:58that whole season 27. It was awful.
- 1:46:02I'm sorry maybe if that is not what would have made it to the
- 1:46:05screen. I don't know, but would but that
- 1:46:07first one with the ICE Warriors and Russia?
- 1:46:09It was so boring. Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:46:13It might. It might have been OK on TV.
- 1:46:15And boy, would they have brought in Beth Chalmers to play Ray
- 1:46:17Robinson. But having that character of
- 1:46:19Rain would have been either. I would.
- 1:46:22I would love to see it. I would love to see that.
- 1:46:25Mark see the gateway home is almost complete like these are
- 1:46:32lines a lesser actor could could fall on their sword.
- 1:46:37But the look of this and the style of it, as we're going into
- 1:46:40the 90s, there's a lot of maybe not spats as we talked about the
- 1:46:44other time, but there's a lot of children's drama at this time.
- 1:46:49Had this look and feel and probably the same budget.
- 1:46:53I mean later on you go to, I was like Demon Headmaster or but
- 1:46:57Remake Tomorrow People and stuff like that.
- 1:47:00It's. It is.
- 1:47:01This is what you get on a kids. It's a bit sort of comic strip,
- 1:47:05isn't it? Yeah, But the interesting thing
- 1:47:07is I think ghosts like Cursor, Fenerick and Survival are all,
- 1:47:12in their own way, visually stunning.
- 1:47:13Like they they have been put together by really, really
- 1:47:16thoughtful directors who face it when they came in.
- 1:47:22It's so sad because they have to do that sort of twirl when they
- 1:47:24come in, don't they? Of course, the Brigadier has to
- 1:47:28shoot straight away. Don't you love it when he goes?
- 1:47:30And I have an ace up my. Sleeve.
- 1:47:35Oh my God, you can't do that to Nicholas Courtney.
- 1:47:39Without the breeder have died, just the destroyer.
- 1:47:43Just going locked him out the window.
- 1:47:44He was always going, oh, I see. The Destroyer had to remove his
- 1:47:48chest plate in a moment of glory so the Brigadier could shoot him
- 1:47:51in the flesh. Of course.
- 1:47:55If it wasn't just, you know, to get us horny, it was for an
- 1:47:58important plot point. Aye.
- 1:48:01I like the bit, you know, where they were going around the light
- 1:48:03fitness. You know, it reminds me of when
- 1:48:05David Tennant and Anthony Head were going around the swimming
- 1:48:09pool, that sort of thing. Kind.
- 1:48:11Of thing Which? One, do you think was more
- 1:48:13effective? I think I'd rather Refugee
- 1:48:16Martians Festival going around swimming pool.
- 1:48:21Honestly, you are singly unique person.
- 1:48:23Do you know that? All the destroyers chains have
- 1:48:26been like there, he goes. There's the wet mouth, there's.
- 1:48:30We. Love.
- 1:48:30Wet mouth Do you know what? This is the Great Extra.
- 1:48:35Tail and he's look, he's. Here we go.
- 1:48:37Chains. I mean all of my all of my
- 1:48:40fetishes. He's an Incredible Hulk, isn't
- 1:48:42he? Yeah, Jesus, he's been down the
- 1:48:44gym a bit as well. I'm telling you, is that make up
- 1:48:48chest or real chest painted blue?
- 1:48:51I think that's make it. I think that's rubber.
- 1:48:53That's like, I don't think. He's got, like, Bobbly's knobbly
- 1:48:55waltzer. I have his teeth.
- 1:48:57Look at those teeth. Yeah.
- 1:48:59That is fucking chilling. Yes.
- 1:49:04Oh, and I like this bit as well where Maldred comes in and she's
- 1:49:08she is happy. He's alive, isn't she?
- 1:49:10Yeah. She's just got so many layers,
- 1:49:13so many reversals. There's a lot of dry ice in this
- 1:49:15story though, isn't there? Well, it has a bit of inside,
- 1:49:18outside atmosphere. Everywhere.
- 1:49:21You know what? You popped a bit of dry ass in
- 1:49:23this room, in a bit of atmosphere going on.
- 1:49:27What? What's that mean?
- 1:49:28I have. No idea.
- 1:49:34But then you think the story sort of comes when God don't you
- 1:49:37already have. You ever drooled that much,
- 1:49:40though? I don't know.
- 1:49:41There's a Burger King opening up in town.
- 1:49:42Oh. My God and a wimpy which is
- 1:49:46right next to the McDonald's. Oh my God, we're doomed, aren't
- 1:49:49we? Burger Palooza.
- 1:49:51But yeah, you think everything's been wrapped up quite quickly,
- 1:49:53isn't it? Don't you?
- 1:49:54Yeah. Oh no.
- 1:49:55Do you remember what it does here?
- 1:49:56Good grief, is that a spaceship? I mean the Doctor's.
- 1:50:01A bit of way the bringing in knocks the Doctor out.
- 1:50:04I know, I know. Just one.
- 1:50:05Little hit like that. There's a bit of tarpaulin for
- 1:50:07him to lab. It's a metal.
- 1:50:08Sheet, isn't it? Is that not a metal?
- 1:50:10No, it's a metal. Or like when I get roofs.
- 1:50:12You have, yeah. It's a bit off, Doris said.
- 1:50:16That on a greenhouse, didn't she?
- 1:50:18Good Lord, is that a spaceship? I'm going to try.
- 1:50:22That one time you know and see if it works.
- 1:50:25Who says Doctor Who's allowed a nonsense, honestly.
- 1:50:30There we go. He knocks him out.
- 1:50:32Even even ice. Looked.
- 1:50:34I mean, why would there be a fucking spaceship?
- 1:50:37Well, you never know. I suppose it is Doctor Who.
- 1:50:39Isn't there? I so the so the Destroyer sort
- 1:50:44of turns up, takes his clothes. Off.
- 1:50:47Well, he's been a prisoner of Morgaine for however long, and
- 1:50:50now he's got his freedom and she doesn't care.
- 1:50:52She's like, oh, whatever, I've used him.
- 1:50:54He can just be unleashed now, do you know?
- 1:50:56What? The sexiest line is where he
- 1:50:58goes. It Burns was, well, sexy and.
- 1:51:03Here we go, the Brigadier and the Destroyer facing off.
- 1:51:06And the Brigadier is like this is most effective monster that
- 1:51:10I've ever had to meet. To be fair, it is I.
- 1:51:13Mean. Remember those spaghetti?
- 1:51:15Axons and things. Exactly.
- 1:51:16It's like you're. So devils with the eyes that
- 1:51:18didn't. Sorry, I've got to kill you.
- 1:51:19You are so much better than that, Dick Axon.
- 1:51:22Yeah, well, no, I've, I said. The Sea Devils are like Dicks in
- 1:51:24the arse way. But they do, right?
- 1:51:29OK. Oh my God, I'm getting wrapped
- 1:51:32up. But I'm.
- 1:51:32I'm glad that Brigadier wasn't killed off.
- 1:51:34I don't think this would be. I'm glad my mum didn't let me
- 1:51:36watch this because I think I've been very sad if he'd have been
- 1:51:39dead. No, I don't think because
- 1:51:42actually we had all of that, you know, even at the end of
- 1:51:44remembrance we have all that funeral stuff, didn't we?
- 1:51:46We'd have to have that, the Brigadier, at the end.
- 1:51:48Of this, wouldn't we? Carmel poured character into
- 1:51:51stuff, but I do like the the conceit that he's died.
- 1:51:56Yeah, Wow. And then the joke where he's
- 1:51:58like. Because actually you might be
- 1:51:59expecting, because you've got the new Brigadier ready to take
- 1:52:01up the place and this is where you think everything's over.
- 1:52:05And then we have this whole extra bit now with the fight and
- 1:52:08the bomb and everything. Your spots are dying bad.
- 1:52:14That's what happens as well, isn't it?
- 1:52:15In that wedding of the River song.
- 1:52:20Oh, that's a great. It's Nicholas Courtney's deadpan
- 1:52:23comic accent. It's great, I tell you.
- 1:52:26I bet he was waiting for the right moment as well.
- 1:52:27The Brigadier, like, right, I'm going to get him after all these
- 1:52:30years have been patronizing me and get I quite like all the
- 1:52:34flames here as well. I think I was.
- 1:52:36Just thinking, yeah, they've done, they've gone all out on
- 1:52:39the flames on this. It could have just been more dry
- 1:52:40ice. You're obsessed with the dry
- 1:52:43ice. Yeah, honestly, we have a
- 1:52:45battlefield party. You know, you could just pump
- 1:52:47the place full of dry. Ice all you need.
- 1:52:51Yeah. And now we have all these bombs
- 1:52:52up and there's all these wonderful speeches.
- 1:52:55What? Well, wonderful.
- 1:52:56Are you sure about that? What is the secret incantation?
- 1:53:01No, it's the air. It was like honey.
- 1:53:04Yeah, no. But what about McCoy?
- 1:53:06Come on. A child looks up to the sky.
- 1:53:09His eyes descend. Us.
- 1:53:11He's acting. I think that's fine.
- 1:53:12He's very intense. It's.
- 1:53:14Can I do the last bit? OK, as as that's war and there's
- 1:53:19our weapons. You are Jos.
- 1:53:20And then we'll gain sort of carted off to prison.
- 1:53:27But first we've got all the Excalibur stuff.
- 1:53:28Haven't. We, yeah, we've always tied
- 1:53:29everything up in there. Did you notice on that scene
- 1:53:32right? I, I, I only point it out
- 1:53:35because it's very obvious. Angela Bruce has put a bit of
- 1:53:37slap on her face. She wasn't wearing it earlier.
- 1:53:40I think on the interior studio thing, the makeup artist has
- 1:53:43been very. She's gone on looking a bit, but
- 1:53:45I'm going to put a bit of eyeshadow on.
- 1:53:48I want Doctor Who to show me at my best in the outline is Aisen
- 1:53:54Show Young that return to the spaceship with Excalibur.
- 1:53:58Oh, don't you love this bit though, where he reads the note.
- 1:54:00Yeah, the note is clever. Is there anything more Sylvester
- 1:54:03Mccoy's doctor than this? It's Sylvester and it's Doctor
- 1:54:05Who. Yeah, that's what you want.
- 1:54:07That's what Doctor Who does best.
- 1:54:08Do you know what line I love? And I I mean this without taking
- 1:54:12the Mickey, is where she says everything else is propaganda.
- 1:54:15That's such a great line. Who signed it?
- 1:54:19Mark. The Doctor.
- 1:54:23And he goes oh. That's all that, doesn't it?
- 1:54:26No. Hang on, does that mean he's
- 1:54:29going to do all this in the future or in the past?
- 1:54:31Well, he might just do that. Not yet in the future.
- 1:54:35Which could be the past. Oh no, which is in the past.
- 1:54:37Yeah, I don't know. Of course, McCoy loves it.
- 1:54:41We're going to get Arthur. Oh, here we go.
- 1:54:46Here. We have another sword fight.
- 1:54:48Anslin and Mordred. That's the hottest sword fight
- 1:54:52in the whole thing, I'm telling you this pair.
- 1:54:55Well, I'm glad his hands all right in this, otherwise he
- 1:54:58wouldn't be able to work with you.
- 1:54:59Oh no, he would. He'd just say I can't do.
- 1:55:01It you're such a bitch, you're never going to go stop going on
- 1:55:04about that signature. Right.
- 1:55:07Oh God, here we go. Mccoy's got 60 seconds to a mow,
- 1:55:10OK. Did we ever find out why we've
- 1:55:12got all these nuclear war things down here?
- 1:55:14Yeah, for this scene, for the drama.
- 1:55:20Oh yeah. So apparently, originally,
- 1:55:22right? Andrew Carmel wrote this speech
- 1:55:24and it was about 3 minutes long and he was like, no, nothing's
- 1:55:27coming out. And then they did it in the
- 1:55:29rehearsal. Room.
- 1:55:30And he was like fucking out. Goes on a bit, doesn't it?
- 1:55:32I've got to cut this down a bit. Look all the dialogues.
- 1:55:38Here in the in the. If it was to read the original
- 1:55:41dialogue, it's just rolling across in the info text, yeah?
- 1:55:46But you need this head to head with the Doctor and more game
- 1:55:50because I didn't really add that a little bit earlier in the barn
- 1:55:52because now the Destroyer's out the way.
- 1:55:55So I know I want to say, see, we've been watching a little bit
- 1:55:58of The Only Way is Essex recently where there are similar
- 1:56:02characters to Morgaine. I'd say Gemma Collins is not too
- 1:56:05far off being over the top, like, oh, I'm going somewhere
- 1:56:07here. So obviously, you know when
- 1:56:10they're slighted by men in Tower and they go for these horrendous
- 1:56:15revenge tactics, public displays and things like this, well, this
- 1:56:19is what Morgaine's doing here. She's been slighted by Arthur,
- 1:56:23who's far too obsessed with playing war games with the Round
- 1:56:26Table people, and so she's gone to all these lengths to have
- 1:56:29battles and wars. True.
- 1:56:32That's one way of reading it. And This is why she's talking
- 1:56:36about the air being like honey, because she still loves him.
- 1:56:39It's a love story, really. Hyde was like that.
- 1:56:42You know what? Do you think happens to Morgaine
- 1:56:44after this though? What do you mean?
- 1:56:47Well, don't go back to the, Don't go back to the dimensions,
- 1:56:49no. He says put her in prison.
- 1:56:50How are you? Going to hold someone with
- 1:56:53magical powers. Exactly did.
- 1:56:55You put her in a cell? Yeah, she's gone, all right.
- 1:56:59What? It surprises me, you know, given
- 1:57:01that they did so much with Jean Marsh in Big Finish that we
- 1:57:04never saw more game back. I think if Jean Marsh was still,
- 1:57:08they would at some point. Yeah, well, they would have been
- 1:57:11nice. They should have done.
- 1:57:13They did those marvellous Sarah Kingdom audios.
- 1:57:15Oh, she's brilliant as Sarah Kingdom, yeah.
- 1:57:19She sets up house with Stephen in one, you know.
- 1:57:21Yeah, she's Oh, she's absolutely.
- 1:57:24Brilliant. And her companion chronicles are
- 1:57:25amazing. But even this, this is all
- 1:57:29work's position where she's talking about being in the woods
- 1:57:31of celadon with Arthur and she she's just so believable.
- 1:57:36Yeah. And you know what I actually
- 1:57:38think? I wondering if she just would
- 1:57:40submit to being in prison now because she's heartbroken.
- 1:57:44Broken, yeah. Oh, he says.
- 1:57:47You have killed my betrothed. All right, kill him then.
- 1:57:53He won't upset Mark in the future or just lop off his
- 1:57:59hands. So.
- 1:58:01Well, hopefully I'll meet. Christopher Bowen.
- 1:58:05Yeah, and he'll be nicer to me. Well, you've had some
- 1:58:07interesting experience with Sylvester McCoy as well, haven't
- 1:58:09you? I know means first McCoy.
- 1:58:12We just never get on. Like, I don't know, he's just
- 1:58:14very uninterested in meeting me. Whereas I met me and Colin
- 1:58:17Baker, he flirts with me every time we meet.
- 1:58:20OK? Every time.
- 1:58:22He kissed me last time. Did I tell you?
- 1:58:24Yeah. He had this little boy right and
- 1:58:27the little boy was dressed, had to throw his Colin Baker and he
- 1:58:29said, oh little boy, you're so cute.
- 1:58:31And then it was my turn next. Anyway, You're less cute.
- 1:58:35I know. Every We've got time in the
- 1:58:37script as well to have this lovely ending with everyone back
- 1:58:42at the Brute, well, Doris's house.
- 1:58:43It's lovely little coder, isn't it?
- 1:58:45Yeah, it's very not very classic series.
- 1:58:47I can only think of a few times. When we do this theory from the
- 1:58:50deep black or KID, there's only a couple of times.
- 1:58:52Well, bye. Thank you, Doctor Wee.
- 1:58:56Out with. The girls, That's my favorite.
- 1:58:58Life. It's, you know, it would have
- 1:59:03been nice to see Doris again. Actually, she didn't.
- 1:59:05Do enough? Did she imagine her up against
- 1:59:07Morgaine? I mean, she had an easy, lovely
- 1:59:09filming day at this house probably, and that's it.
- 1:59:12Yeah. Oh, shall you and Bambera are
- 1:59:14going? All in Bessie.
- 1:59:16Could you imagine go on this road trip with this bunch?
- 1:59:18Imagine a whole. Imagine a whole movie with them
- 1:59:21on a road trip with Bessie. They all got pissed.
- 1:59:24Written a short story surely? They ended up in some dreadful
- 1:59:27B&B somewhere having sex. I.
- 1:59:29Having sex What is for? Ohh.
- 1:59:32Does. The Bruce, Sophie Aldridge Show
- 1:59:33me for Bearer. Hang.
- 1:59:38On Sophia No. Sophia A stories.
- 1:59:42That's. Your fancy life, not mine.
- 1:59:45You're. Sick.
- 1:59:48Oh my. God, stop talking over this
- 1:59:50charming ending about sex. It's lovely.
- 1:59:54Oh, he goes, Are you really good with a lawn mower?
- 1:59:58And then he says, I'll make supper.
- 2:00:01Oh, do you know, what do you think Mccoy's the cutest doctor.
- 2:00:04When he's charming like this, he's so lovely, isn't he?
- 2:00:07Yeah, I can't see any of the other doctors doing that.
- 2:00:10I never did a turn around with Matt Smith.
- 2:00:12You know, no matter how much people trying to convince me why
- 2:00:15you say, hey, Sylvester McCoy, I love him now.
- 2:00:18Why is that do you think? What grew up, I think, and stop
- 2:00:22being a precocious teenager who didn't like this rest of McCoy
- 2:00:25era. We always criticize this, but
- 2:00:26we're actually we love every Doctor and we love every story
- 2:00:29because we love Doctor Who. Well.
- 2:00:32So if you don't like it, don't watch it.
- 2:00:35I mean, I would say that's a fabulous sentiment to end on,
- 2:00:37but we do have to give our three fabulous reasons as to why
- 2:00:41people should watch Battlefield one a piece, starting with you.
- 2:00:46Bringing in Doctor Who to the the 90s.
- 2:00:51Angela Bruce's Brigadier Bambera, absolutely updating
- 2:00:54unit, the new unit, that's three.
- 2:00:57Things. No, I'm I'm summing it up as
- 2:00:59that's one. OK, I'm going to say the
- 2:01:03fabulous Ling Thai as Xiao Yung, who I believe is one of those
- 2:01:07companions that never was. Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:01:10Fabulous. It's great for Ace to have a
- 2:01:12female companion. The action and the pace of this
- 2:01:17story and yeah, and all the character moments as well.
- 2:01:22There's a good mix. It's a good balance, the great
- 2:01:24pace of a story. That's three things.
- 2:01:27Again. In one, honestly, you're greedy.
- 2:01:32I am going to say representation.
- 2:01:34I think it's fabulous that we've got young people, old people,
- 2:01:36lots of men, lots of women, lots of people of different
- 2:01:41ethnicities. In terms of representation, I
- 2:01:45think this is the best a doctor, whoever was until I would say
- 2:01:51early Chipnall. I'm going to say the Destroyer.
- 2:01:57The design, the creature, the brilliance of that, the drippy
- 2:02:02mouth, the chest burst, all of that.
- 2:02:07Doctor Who monsters are cool by this point.
- 2:02:11I think they're always pretty cool.
- 2:02:13They hit me. Sometimes.
- 2:02:16No, The cyber leader from Revenge of the Cybermen.
- 2:02:19Dr. You will be fragmentized. Dr. OK And my third thing then
- 2:02:28is going to be, oh, I want to make it a goodie.
- 2:02:32It's going to be OK Yeah. It's going to be my reaction to
- 2:02:36this story, which I used to find a massive embarrassment, and
- 2:02:41thanks to talking about this story with other Doctor Who fans
- 2:02:45who have lots of love for it. I've done a complete 180 with
- 2:02:49this and I really, really love this now.
- 2:02:51I think it is incredible. I think there are problems, but
- 2:02:54there are problems with most classic Doctor Who stories.
- 2:02:57But I think this is incredible fun to watch, Very quotable,
- 2:03:00great characters. I don't know what was wrong with
- 2:03:04me back in my teenage years. I don't know either, no.
- 2:03:07I just loved this. One maybe back then.
- 2:03:10Well, did you? What, even that wiry 7 year old?
- 2:03:12Yeah. Always loved the story.
- 2:03:13It's my number one favorite McCoy story.
- 2:03:15So. Very, very sweet.
- 2:03:17Well, listen, Mark, we're going to be recording again pretty
- 2:03:22soon, aren't we? But we are going to be indulging
- 2:03:25in a threesome so. Why don't you?
- 2:03:32Tell No, no, you don't have a listeners.
- 2:03:33Who's jumping in with us this time?
- 2:03:34Next time. So we're going to be doing
- 2:03:38talons of Wing Chiang, aren't we?
- 2:03:40We are. How bold.
- 2:03:41Yes. How bold.
- 2:03:43Very exciting. Can I say?
- 2:03:45I think before we even recall that, that Talons of Wing Chiang
- 2:03:48is one of the best ever Doctor Who stories.
- 2:03:52It's very different to Battlefield, let's put it that
- 2:03:54way. Lots of yell.
- 2:03:54The world's apart, I said. But it's imminently quotable
- 2:03:57again, isn't it? Shows a trick.
