- 0:02Here's your host, Alex Garrett on this edition of the Alex Garrett Podcast Network,
- 0:09the one Leg Up feature. Thanks to Arthur Idalla and the A VK.
- 0:13Law Company and Rapid Pulse for making us feel so welcome last night at
- 0:18the Iridium. I just want to get that out there. It was great
- 0:20talk with padre Lu a little bit as well. Gabby had a great time.
- 0:24Gabby actually met the mayor, Mayor Bill de Blasio, former mayor of
- 0:28New York, so that was kind of fun. Nice guy, nice guy
- 0:32for sure. But I have a few things I have to get off my
- 0:36chest. Firstly, is this situation with ocean Gate. Off the top here,
- 0:45let me just say, I don't believe ocean Gate. I don't believe
- 0:50the people buying into ocean Gate are at fault. I think it's ocean Gate
- 0:55that is really the problem here because what they've done as they've capitalized on a
- 1:03cap size for quite a few years now, one hundred eleven years ago,
- 1:08of course, the Titanic cap size in that same part of the Atlantic Ocean.
- 1:14And my thought today on the Alex Scarett Podcast Network, as we mourn
- 1:18five humans, I don't like the idea that they're being labeled these arrogant billionaires
- 1:26and these on the other their people. They're human beings. There's a nineteen
- 1:30year old that died as well. I don't like the fact that they're being
- 1:36laughed at for dying and spending their money. I think it's ocean Gate that
- 1:41should get all of the blame here, because they're the ones that are snookering
- 1:46people into making this seemed like a safe expedition down into the Titanic remains,
- 1:53and maybe that is sacred ground. Maybe we shouldn't be exploring those remains anymore.
- 1:57Thank God they didn't build over the Twin Towers spaces and they built just
- 2:04next to it. Thank God they didn't rebuild over that horrible site. And
- 2:10I think the same principle applies. I don't think anybody or anything should be
- 2:16disturbing the Titanic. I guess Jim Cameron had to do that to make the
- 2:23movie twenty five years ago. But this hit home because many many years ago,
- 2:32I got to know the man who found the Titanic. Hit it all
- 2:43right, Alex are you there? How are you? Doctor Ballard? Yep?
- 2:51That is two thousand and six, me talking with doctor Bob Ballard at
- 2:57the Immersions Presents conference, which was sort of a spinoff, if you all
- 3:01are, an addition to my work on the Jason project many many years ago.
- 3:08And so this hit home because I wondered, I wonder what doctor Ballard
- 3:12would say, And sure enough, he and James Cameron actually joined Stephen Good
- 3:23Morning American, Good Morning America Today and talked about this issue. As I
- 3:35que it up here. Bob knew Ocean Gates founders, doctor and Rush quite
- 3:38well. Tell us about him. Well, I met him quite honestly,
- 3:44threw his father over twenty years ago, and I remember when he came up
- 3:47to me. He was fascinated with the Titanic and had the dream. His
- 3:52dream was to go down and explore the Titanic, but unfortunately that dream turned
- 3:55into a nightmare. That's George Stephan was bobbing hot Stephen, George Stphanopolis.
- 4:01But yes, the man behind the finding of the remains of the Titanic on
- 4:06Good Morning America Today with James Cameron and James You were longtime friends with Paul
- 4:13Henry Nagioli, who was a deep sea explorer titank expert. Yeah, we
- 4:17called him pH Or in French Payosh, and he was one of the people
- 4:23that I looked up to when I first started in the sort of deep submergence
- 4:27world. He had been out to Titanic before me, and then we had
- 4:30a kind of friendly competition over the years. He'd go out one year,
- 4:33I'd go out the next year, and we explored the reck site. He
- 4:36was more focused on the debris field where they were recovering all kinds of artifacts
- 4:41which were in museums all around the world, and I was more focused on
- 4:45the actual physical part of the wreck and the interior exploration of it. But
- 4:49we made about the same number of dives down to the reck site. So
- 4:53I know him very well. And it's just this horrible, horrible tragedy that's
- 4:59taken place here. It sure has. Let's talk a little bit more about
- 5:00it, Bob. You said, once you've heard about the vessel's disappearance,
- 5:04you knew this was the outcome. Yes, Yes, we are very familiar
- 5:11with exploring recks like this. I explored the Scorpion just two to the east
- 5:15of the Titanic, did a similar forensic analysis, and we detected its implosion
- 5:21with our underwater listening system, and that's what the Navy told the Coastguard the
- 5:26moment had happened. They picked up the implosion, passed it on to the
- 5:30coastguards. So we immediately knew that where to go and where to look.
- 5:34But it just took time to get the ROVs down there, and they finally
- 5:38got there yesterday. What do you think went wrong? Well, that's the
- 5:44big debate, and there will be now a very systematic survey. Like I
- 5:47said, I've done this before on the loss of the Thresher and the Scorpion.
- 5:51It's scattered all over the place. So the ROVs are going to do
- 5:55a very very precise, systematic mapping that will collect the pography at high definition
- 6:00inventory and they'll also be recovering the objects. So this investigation will go on
- 6:05for quite some time. Obviously Jim can talk about well they went on for
- 6:12seven minutes, but quite some time that in a little of themselves. Lets
- 6:15me ask this question, how many vessels have been lost down there to begin
- 6:20with? And maybe if we know that that part of the Atlantic Ocean is
- 6:27taking vessels, and even if it's not every year, but there's a chance
- 6:32maybe just maybe ocean Gate if they want to keep doing this after this disaster
- 6:40needs to perfect it a little more. Maybe they do have to perfect it
- 6:44against this ocean that has clearly taken now what four different vessels, the Titanic,
- 6:51what doctor Baller is mentioning, and the titan Sub. It's tragic and
- 7:00ironic, and I get people want to take a chance, and I'm not
- 7:03blaming them. I will not put this on the people that paid two hundred
- 7:09and fifty thousand dollars. You know why, because they have that money they
- 7:12could spend on how they want. It's up to ocean Gate to make sure
- 7:15they're damned safe down and then the wreckage and then coming back up. It's
- 7:20their responsibility and no one else's. It's it's not the responsibility of the billionaire
- 7:29to figure it out. It's the responsibility of the CEO of the crew.
- 7:34I wouldn't even say the crew. I would say the management of ocean Gate
- 7:38beyond the crew, because you know, I just think once you're down there,
- 7:42even the crew is at peril, right, that's gonna happen, And
- 7:47just stunning four vessels in that part of the Atlantic Ocean by Saint John's Canada.
- 7:54You think that ocean's angry. I think that ocean's angry. I really,
- 7:59I really do. I think that ocean is pretty damn angry to be
- 8:01honest with you. One hundred eleven years later, all right, this weekend
- 8:07we're gonna have Richard V. Battle back to talk about his book The Americans
- 8:13and the Americans. And then one last thought, I really want to know,
- 8:20uh, if you'd like to partner with this podcast. It's getting a
- 8:24bit tiring to do this and I love doing it, but I want to
- 8:30know if anyone wants to partner with us in the one leg up adventure and
- 8:33the venture. Just email me Alex and Alex NYC dot com and we could
- 8:37talk about possibly sponsorship opportunities and possibilities and whatnot. But join join this journey,
- 8:45will Yeah, Alex and Alex g NYC dot com. Alex and alexg
- 8:48NYC dot com would love to work with you out there and uh and build
- 8:54a partnership to get this this podcast up and running now only as a podcast,
- 9:01but maybe it's a radio show. Let's talk about it on the Alex
- 9:03Garrett Podcast Network.
