- 0:00Podcasthero.com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:06podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to
- 0:13you by the Great News Podcast because good news should be
- 0:17heard. And the link is right here in
- 0:20the show notes. Today's quote has no confirmed
- 0:23original author. It's one of those quotes that
- 0:27travels without a name attached, but as you'll hear, the science
- 0:31behind it is anything but anonymous.
- 0:34The quote is this. Being happy doesn't mean you
- 0:39have it all. It simply means you're thankful
- 0:43for all you have. Most of us have been operating
- 0:47under a version of happiness that goes something like this.
- 0:51When I have more. More money, more success, more
- 0:54security, more of whatever currently feels out of reach.
- 0:59Then I'll be happy. Happiness as a destination,
- 1:05something you arrive at once conditions have been met.
- 1:08The problem is that the conditions keep moving.
- 1:11You reach 1 threshold and another appears just beyond it.
- 1:15The house you need gets bigger, the income grows, but the
- 1:20lifestyle grows to match it. The goal posts never stop
- 1:24moving, and the happiness that was supposed to arrive when you
- 1:28got there keeps getting deferred to the next one, the next big
- 1:33milestone, the next step. Doctor Robert Emmons, nicknamed
- 1:38the Father of Gratitude and professor of psychology at UC
- 1:42Davis, has spent decades scientifically studying what
- 1:47actually makes people happy. And what his research
- 1:50consistently shows is that happiness is far less connected
- 1:55to what we have than to how we relate to what we already have.
- 2:01In a landmark series of experiments, Emmons found that
- 2:04when people consciously practice grateful living, their happiness
- 2:09increased and their ability to withstand negative events
- 2:12improved, as did their immunity to anger, envy, resentment, and
- 2:17depression. Participants who kept a weekly
- 2:21gratitude journal, simply writing down things that they
- 2:25felt thankful for. They reported higher levels of
- 2:28positive emotion, more energy and greater optimism than those
- 2:34who recorded neutral events or daily frustrations.
- 2:39After 10 weeks, the gratitude group was 25% happier and
- 2:44exercised 1.5 hours more per week than the control group.
- 2:50Not because of their circumstances had changed,
- 2:53because their attention had. That's the insight at the heart
- 2:58of today's quote. Emmons put it plainly.
- 3:02You cannot feel envious and grateful at the same time.
- 3:07They are incompatible feelings. Gratitude and the restless
- 3:11hunger for more cannot occupy the same space simultaneously.
- 3:17When you are genuinely thankful for what you already have, the
- 3:22craving for what you don't have loses its grip.
- 3:26Not because ambition disappears, but because that present moment
- 3:30stops feeling like a waiting room for something better.
- 3:36Happiness was never at the next milestone.
- 3:40It was always available right here, right now, in the
- 3:44relationship with what's already in your hands.
- 3:47So here's the question, what are you currently looking past in
- 3:52your work, your relationships, or your daily life?
- 3:55Because you're waiting for something more before you allow
- 3:59yourself to feel happy. Because the science is clear and
- 4:03the wisdom is simple. Happiness isn't waiting at the
- 4:07end of the next achievement. It's available right now in the
- 4:12deliberate decision to notice and be genuinely thankful for
- 4:17what you already have, for what's already here.
- 4:20You don't need it all, you just need to see what you already
- 4:24have. That's it for today.
- 4:28I'm Anna McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 4:33tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 4:39with another daily quote.
