Transcript
- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome back to a new episode of Podcasts on the
- 0:20Speaker 1: Brink Thursday morning, August seventh. Indiana victorious on Wednesday night
- 0:26Speaker 1: and it's exhibition opener down in Puerto Rico. Josh Post
- 0:31Speaker 1: of Inside the Hall is on the scene for us.
- 0:34Speaker 1: It's gonna be actually your first introduction to Josh hereon
- 0:37Speaker 1: podcast on the Brink. But if you've been follow on
- 0:39Speaker 1: the site for the last what month or so, been
- 0:42Speaker 1: writing some football content and getting going strong now with
- 0:46Speaker 1: basketball as well. Really happy to have Josh part the team.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Also happy to have him down in Puerto Rico. Before
- 0:50Speaker 1: we get to the show, I just want to ask
- 0:53Speaker 1: those of you watching on YouTube, hit the like button,
- 0:55Speaker 1: hit the subscribe button, helps us grow our audience there
- 0:57Speaker 1: over on YouTube, and those listening on the audio only feed,
- 1:01Speaker 1: whether it be on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, please leave
- 1:04Speaker 1: us a rating, five star rating preferably and a review.
- 1:07Speaker 1: We really appreciate that, Josh. It was not a close
- 1:12Speaker 1: game obviously last night, but first look at well, second look,
- 1:17Speaker 1: we can count the open practice that we were at
- 1:19Speaker 1: a couple weeks ago, but you know, first look, in
- 1:23Speaker 1: terms of game action for Indiana basketball on Wednesday night,
- 1:30Speaker 1: what was what were your impressions from the game and
- 1:34Speaker 1: just big picture takeaways.
- 1:37Speaker 2: I think it started right up. First of all, I'm Josh,
- 1:40Speaker 2: nice to meet everybody. I'm glad to be on inside
- 1:43Speaker 2: the hall this year. I'm a senior. But my first
- 1:47Speaker 2: impression was right when we got to the stadium alex
- 1:49Speaker 2: It was full warm ups from the get go. Usually
- 1:55Speaker 2: last year we saw just shooting around till about the
- 1:58Speaker 2: forty five minute mark. No, there were drills going on
- 2:00Speaker 2: all the way up until Indiana went back to their
- 2:03Speaker 2: bench with about a minute left on the clock. So
- 2:06Speaker 2: that was a start right there. You could feel something
- 2:08Speaker 2: new was there, and then the game there was just
- 2:10Speaker 2: an intensity despite playing what I believe people called the
- 2:15Speaker 2: equivalent of an NAIA team, the intensity from the jump,
- 2:19Speaker 2: from not only the starters but the guys that came
- 2:21Speaker 2: off the bench. The big picture, the score didn't matter
- 2:26Speaker 2: in this game. It was what you saw from individual
- 2:28Speaker 2: players and how they came together as a team, and
- 2:31Speaker 2: I really liked what I saw. Obviously, it was August sixth,
- 2:34Speaker 2: so it's gonna be hard to make any predictions based
- 2:37Speaker 2: off an August sixth game exhibition in Puerto Rico, but
- 2:41Speaker 2: overall very good defensively and turning rebounds into fast break layups.
- 2:48Speaker 1: So obviously I only saw the video that you posted
- 2:51Speaker 1: in some other video highlights that were on social media,
- 2:53Speaker 1: But having kind of been on one of these trips
- 2:56Speaker 1: of four back all the way back in twenty fourteen
- 2:58Speaker 1: up to Montreal, I can remember going to five different venues,
- 3:01Speaker 1: I think, in six days watching Indiana play exhibition games.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Not a lot of fans made that trip. I was
- 3:08Speaker 1: thinking that there might be a stronger contingent of IU
- 3:11Speaker 1: fans down at this destination because it's obviously a beach
- 3:15Speaker 1: and it's the time of year where people would like
- 3:17Speaker 1: to go on vacation and get away and get in
- 3:19Speaker 1: the sun. Kind of similar to twenty twenty one when
- 3:22Speaker 1: they went down to the Bahamas and played a couple
- 3:24Speaker 1: of games. But just from judging what I saw on
- 3:27Speaker 1: the background of the videos and just the atmosphere, didn't
- 3:30Speaker 1: look like there was a strong contingent of fans down there.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Was that surprising at all? Anyway, What did you kind
- 3:36Speaker 1: of expect going in and how did that match up
- 3:39Speaker 1: with reality of what you actually saw in terms of atmosphere.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I expected a little bit more, but then I realized
- 3:46Speaker 2: after talking to Zach Osterman, that school has started in
- 3:50Speaker 2: the state of Indiana, so it's hard for people to
- 3:53Speaker 2: bring their kids down for a family vacation. To make
- 3:56Speaker 2: it an Indiana basketball family vacation. There are a couple
- 3:59Speaker 2: sprinkled in there. It was a lot of varsity club members.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Uh.
- 4:02Speaker 2: There was an event for them with food and drinks,
- 4:05Speaker 2: and they kind of went to the to the court
- 4:09Speaker 2: side seats and then people filed behind. I think from
- 4:13Speaker 2: what I could hear, when a guy would score, there
- 4:15Speaker 2: was a lot of cheering. There were families that came
- 4:18Speaker 2: as well, made that a family vacation as well, families
- 4:21Speaker 2: of players that came, but really an empty gym with
- 4:26Speaker 2: the only energy coming from the Indiana players. You from
- 4:30Speaker 2: your vantage.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Point, you were just a little bit elevated up in
- 4:33Speaker 1: the just up in the stands, like within the regular seats.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Is that right?
- 4:37Speaker 2: Yes, we had regular seats and we had a regular ticket.
- 4:40Speaker 2: I wish I had it on me right now.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Yeah, you were. You were multitasking very well there. I
- 4:46Speaker 1: wanted to point out everybody if people had asked this
- 4:49Speaker 1: kind of what to expect in terms of the coverage,
- 4:51Speaker 1: Josh was keeping stats, which he pointed out to me
- 4:54Speaker 1: before we hit record that he was upset that he
- 4:57Speaker 1: missed a couple rebounds and assists. But we did get
- 4:59Speaker 1: a fit. We didn't no, I think before the game
- 5:01Speaker 1: that we were going to get official stats, So I
- 5:04Speaker 1: know you wanted to keep those just to kind of
- 5:05Speaker 1: have an idea of something to go off when you
- 5:08Speaker 1: were writing. But you're also holding your phone trying to
- 5:12Speaker 1: get as many video clips as possible in addition to
- 5:16Speaker 1: posting updates on social media. So good job there. I
- 5:19Speaker 1: wanted to get just some of your thoughts on players. Obviously,
- 5:23Speaker 1: I want to caveat all of this with this was
- 5:25Speaker 1: August six, This was an exhibition game. This was an
- 5:27Speaker 1: over clearly overmatched opponent. But I think we can at
- 5:30Speaker 1: least glean some observations from just what you saw in
- 5:34Speaker 1: terms of players and maybe some style of play things
- 5:37Speaker 1: in terms of how things were running offensive and defensively.
- 5:40Speaker 1: But I want to start with Trent Sisley, who you
- 5:41Speaker 1: wrote about for this morning on Inside the Hall. Obviously,
- 5:45Speaker 1: Trent's a name that a lot of people are familiar
- 5:48Speaker 1: with because he was recruited for quite a long time
- 5:50Speaker 1: by the previous coaching staff signed with Indiana under Mike Woodson,
- 5:53Speaker 1: the coaching change happens. He is solid as you can
- 5:57Speaker 1: be with the program, sticks sticks it out. Is obviously
- 6:01Speaker 1: now a freshman on campus. Spent last season at Montvert
- 6:03Speaker 1: Academy down in Florida after playing his first three years
- 6:06Speaker 1: of Heritage Chills, and I think, just from talking to
- 6:09Speaker 1: Trent in the spring, really used that year down in
- 6:13Speaker 1: Florida as a development year in terms of getting an
- 6:15Speaker 1: opportunity to work in an atmosphere that's much more college
- 6:19Speaker 1: like than what he would have had back at Heritage
- 6:22Speaker 1: Chills and play against the national schedule. They traveled around
- 6:24Speaker 1: the country, played a lot of great teams, and while
- 6:26Speaker 1: his stats didn't jump off you know the paper when
- 6:30Speaker 1: you looked at him from a senior season, definitely showed
- 6:34Speaker 1: some growth. Shot the three ball really well. Is last
- 6:36Speaker 1: year of high school, and it looks like that translated
- 6:38Speaker 1: to last night's game where he went three for three
- 6:41Speaker 1: from deep, but started a little bit slow, but once
- 6:43Speaker 1: he got into the swing of things, played really well.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Was Indians leading score last night. Got to talk to
- 6:49Speaker 1: the media. Don't see that very often for a freshman
- 6:51Speaker 1: in their first college action. So just you your thoughts
- 6:54Speaker 1: on Trent how he looked, And obviously I don't want
- 6:57Speaker 1: to look into projections in terms of how much well
- 7:00Speaker 1: he played, but do he look the part of a
- 7:01Speaker 1: guy that can maybe help Indiana the season.
- 7:04Speaker 2: He not only looked a part of a guy that
- 7:06Speaker 2: could help Indiana this season, he could be a guy
- 7:08Speaker 2: that leads Indiana at some point, maybe not the entire season.
- 7:12Speaker 2: And again it's August seventh as we record this right now,
- 7:16Speaker 2: but he got off to that slow start, but then
- 7:19Speaker 2: hit that first layup off a great feed, and then
- 7:23Speaker 2: the next possession after a defensive stop or right wing three,
- 7:26Speaker 2: didn't even graze the rim, and it was game on
- 7:29Speaker 2: from there. He think he came out late in that
- 7:32Speaker 2: first half, and then in the second half he exploded.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I think it was sixteen second half points. He made
- 7:38Speaker 2: both of his threes, six to nine from twos, He
- 7:42Speaker 2: was seventy five percent overall. He had the most field goals,
- 7:46Speaker 2: and he didn't just dominate offensively. He was a presence defensively.
- 7:50Speaker 2: And it's hard to be the four at his size
- 7:57Speaker 2: in the Big Ten play in college basketball. He had
- 7:59Speaker 2: no issue with that against this team that probably didn't
- 8:03Speaker 2: have it. They didn't have a guy that was over
- 8:05Speaker 2: six foot four, So Indians Biggs had everything going for them,
- 8:09Speaker 2: but Trent Sisley sharing the ball, rebounding the basketball, defensively,
- 8:14Speaker 2: and in most importantly offensive explosion in game one, and
- 8:18Speaker 2: Darren DeVries said, that's a pretty high bar. He said it,
- 8:21Speaker 2: but it's good to have confidence for the freshman.
- 8:24Speaker 1: As far as Lamar Wilkerson goes, I didn't pay too
- 8:27Speaker 1: much attention in terms of his final stat line. I
- 8:30Speaker 1: looked more at the fact that the amount of attempts
- 8:33Speaker 1: that he got up, which was I think over ten.
- 8:35Speaker 1: I think maybe he took don't have it right in
- 8:36Speaker 1: front of me. Let's see thirteen threes, So he was
- 8:40Speaker 1: three for thirteen on threes. I don't think we've ever
- 8:44Speaker 1: in the last eight seasons of Indiana basketball seen a
- 8:46Speaker 1: player take thirteen threes in a game. I'm not saying
- 8:49Speaker 1: that's what he's going to do on a regular basis,
- 8:50Speaker 1: but I can see him getting up seven or eight
- 8:54Speaker 1: a game pretty regularly. Didn't obviously make the percentage that
- 8:59Speaker 1: he would like to. But just what were your thoughts
- 9:02Speaker 1: on Lamar Seeing him last night live and going up
- 9:07Speaker 1: and down, And we know he's a talented scorer. We
- 9:09Speaker 1: know there was a reason that a lot of schools
- 9:11Speaker 1: wanted them. Indiana was fortunate to get his commitment back
- 9:14Speaker 1: in the spring. But seems like he's going to be
- 9:15Speaker 1: a big piece of the puzzle this season for the Hoosiers.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Yeah, he was trying to shoot himself out of this
- 9:21Speaker 2: slump early on and was putting up good shots but
- 9:26Speaker 2: not the right shot in a Darren Devriez offense. But
- 9:30Speaker 2: what led me to be excited about Lamar was his
- 9:38Speaker 2: defensive intensity. Despite his shooting, it never wavered. So when
- 9:43Speaker 2: Wilkerson he's on the floor with Connorway and en Right,
- 9:46Speaker 2: there was never a point where the opponent's guard was
- 9:50Speaker 2: not harassed by one of the three of them, and
- 9:53Speaker 2: it was really impressive to see that the offensive struggles
- 9:58Speaker 2: didn't bleed over it onto the defensive end. So Darren
- 10:04Speaker 2: de Freese said, I'd love for him to shoot twenty
- 10:07Speaker 2: shots game. If he goes two of twenty, I'm alright
- 10:09Speaker 2: with it because the next game he might most likely
- 10:11Speaker 2: will go eighteen of twenty. So I think that his
- 10:15Speaker 2: defensive intensity kept him afloat despite a three or thirteen performance,
- 10:21Speaker 2: and he only shot one two point field goal, he's
- 10:23Speaker 2: oh for one.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Teyton Connorway, I know your messages in me a little
- 10:27Speaker 1: bit throughout the game with someone I think that impressed you.
- 10:30Speaker 1: You know, I watched a lot of film on him
- 10:32Speaker 1: back in the spring, and he really just stood out
- 10:34Speaker 1: as a guy that can control the game really on
- 10:36Speaker 1: both ends in terms of how he facilitates, but also
- 10:39Speaker 1: defensively kind of spearheading things in terms of ball pressure. Again,
- 10:44Speaker 1: can't take a lot out of a game where Indiana
- 10:46Speaker 1: wins by fifty one points. But with Taytan Connorway, I
- 10:49Speaker 1: know you were impressed with some things. What stood out
- 10:51Speaker 1: with him and what makes him somebody that Indiana fans
- 10:54Speaker 1: should be excited about heading into the season.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Well, first of all, his three point shooting. His increased
- 11:00Speaker 2: significantly over the summer. He said, he's been working really
- 11:05Speaker 2: hard on it. He was three for three yesterday and
- 11:09Speaker 2: or sorry, three for or one for one. He made
- 11:11Speaker 2: us loan three. I was thinking of Trent Sisley. I apologize,
- 11:16Speaker 2: but his defensive effort on every single play. Indiana was
- 11:20Speaker 2: up by twenty at one point and there was not
- 11:24Speaker 2: an inch of room. I said it last week when
- 11:27Speaker 2: we were watching the practice to someone he might be
- 11:31Speaker 2: in the running for Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.
- 11:34Speaker 2: There is not a lack of effort at all. There's
- 11:37Speaker 2: diving for loose balls. There was going into the stands
- 11:41Speaker 2: for a loose ball, diving on the floor, and it
- 11:44Speaker 2: was just an all around effort. He played twenty one
- 11:46Speaker 2: minutes and I was impressed every single step of the way.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Another guy that didn't shoot particularly well, but kind of
- 11:55Speaker 1: stuff the statue. Tucker to Reese plays twenty minutes, obviously
- 11:57Speaker 1: coming off of a season enning injury. Go scores nine points,
- 12:01Speaker 1: but eight rebounds, seven assists, three steals. Kind of did
- 12:05Speaker 1: a little bit of everything, I mean, and that's necessary,
- 12:08Speaker 1: that should necessarily be surprising. Two time player of the
- 12:10Speaker 1: Year in the Missouri Valley Conference. You look at his
- 12:13Speaker 1: rebounding and assist numbers when he back when he was
- 12:15Speaker 1: at Drake, they were always pretty strong. And I think
- 12:17Speaker 1: on this Indiana team, he's going to have to do
- 12:19Speaker 1: a little bit of everything. We know that the front
- 12:21Speaker 1: court isn't going to be overwhelming in terms of size.
- 12:25Speaker 1: He's gonna have to be a guy that rebounds the
- 12:26Speaker 1: ball effectively. But the thing I like there is the
- 12:30Speaker 1: is the assist numbers, because that tells me, you know,
- 12:32Speaker 1: he's looked at as a guy that can go out
- 12:34Speaker 1: and score twenty five in the game. But when he's
- 12:37Speaker 1: being unselfish and moving the ball, I think for Indiana,
- 12:40Speaker 1: that's a really good sign. And that's just the kind
- 12:42Speaker 1: of player I think from from watching Tucker, you know,
- 12:46Speaker 1: a little bit last year at West Virginia and then
- 12:48Speaker 1: obviously going back to his days at Drake, he was
- 12:50Speaker 1: a kind of a household name in college basketball. People
- 12:52Speaker 1: knew him was one of the best mid major players.
- 12:55Speaker 1: But his versatility in terms of not just being able
- 12:58Speaker 1: to shoot but also facilitate with others has to be
- 13:00Speaker 1: something that should be a positive as Indiana prepares for
- 13:05Speaker 1: its first season in or Darien Devrez.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Yeah, like you said, it didn't jump out on a
- 13:10Speaker 2: stat sheet, but the way he played in his defense,
- 13:15Speaker 2: I'm just gonna keep harping on defense, but everything was
- 13:21Speaker 2: spilling over. He was great in transition. I think there
- 13:23Speaker 2: was three alleops that he threw. I think Indiana committed
- 13:28Speaker 2: on three of four alleops. One was taking Connorway throwing
- 13:31Speaker 2: one off the backboard for Sam Alexis, who wasn't ready
- 13:33Speaker 2: for it. All around funny moment. He missed it, got
- 13:36Speaker 2: it back. But Devrees is great in transition. He might
- 13:41Speaker 2: not look the part as a guy that can really
- 13:44Speaker 2: push the pace just with his size in his build,
- 13:48Speaker 2: but as soon as Indiana got on in transition, it
- 13:50Speaker 2: was Tucker Devrez that was leading the charge and trying
- 13:53Speaker 2: to get his teammates open. It was the extra pass
- 13:56Speaker 2: he was driving to the lane and a kickout to
- 13:58Speaker 2: someone in the corner for an open three. Lamar Wilkerson
- 14:02Speaker 2: usually would make that shot, didn't yesterday, but it was
- 14:06Speaker 2: really impressive to see the ball movement led by Debrees
- 14:09Speaker 2: to get an open look. Could go for the layup sometime,
- 14:14Speaker 2: but with the open guy in the corner, especially an
- 14:17Speaker 2: exhibition game, you want to you want to test things out.
- 14:20Speaker 1: A lot of times in a game like this, players
- 14:24Speaker 1: will revert to maybe some bad habits and kind of
- 14:27Speaker 1: it'll it'll it'll turn into kind of like a pickup
- 14:31Speaker 1: game where you know things are just happening and that
- 14:35Speaker 1: it's clear the other team can't stop them, so you know,
- 14:37Speaker 1: maybe it's easy to take the the chance and take
- 14:41Speaker 1: a bad shot or something like that. Was Indiana pretty
- 14:45Speaker 1: focused and kind of organized throughout the game, or was
- 14:49Speaker 1: there any point where it got to be kind of
- 14:52Speaker 1: I don't want to call it an NBA All Star
- 14:53Speaker 1: Game exhibition type up and down, but was in was
- 14:55Speaker 1: Indiana continuing to run its offense and staying organized throughout
- 15:00Speaker 1: the game.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Up until about the sixth minute mark of the fourth quarter.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Indiana was running sets the entire time. They were slowing
- 15:08Speaker 2: it down mostly in the second half. The first quarter
- 15:13Speaker 2: was a bit competitive, nothing out of the ordinary for
- 15:17Speaker 2: a game like this, but they went into sets and
- 15:24Speaker 2: UCB went into a zone like a ball press. It's
- 15:30Speaker 2: not going to be the best one ever in Indiana
- 15:33Speaker 2: broke it at ease, but they really tried to run
- 15:38Speaker 2: their stuff. They're out of bound set where baseline out
- 15:41Speaker 2: of bound sets were set plays. They weren't just trying
- 15:44Speaker 2: to find there was two guys wide open under the basket.
- 15:46Speaker 2: They still ran the play that last seven minutes. It
- 15:51Speaker 2: was rough to watch. I am not gonna lie. There
- 15:54Speaker 2: were guys that should not have been on the floor
- 15:56Speaker 2: together and I'm not talking Indiana players. It was. It
- 16:00Speaker 2: got ugly at times.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Just just the other team in terms of who they
- 16:04Speaker 1: had out there. It was just a complete mismatch. I mean,
- 16:07Speaker 1: obviously it's a fifty one point game. I'm just it
- 16:10Speaker 1: was it is it from the same point that they
- 16:12Speaker 1: just had no business being on the court with Indiana.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it was like Naia bench players against Trent Sisley
- 16:20Speaker 2: and Indiana's depth players. It wasn't like there was walk
- 16:24Speaker 2: ons on the floor. Ian Stevens saw the floor in
- 16:26Speaker 2: the fourth quarter. But it was a complete mismatch.
- 16:30Speaker 1: What about Reed Bailey and Sam Alexis. Obviously both of
- 16:33Speaker 1: those guys had some strong stats, some strong games, and
- 16:38Speaker 1: you can't really tell a lot. You mentioned that they
- 16:40Speaker 1: didn't have much size, so we don't know how this
- 16:42Speaker 1: is going to translate. We're gonna get a better idea
- 16:44Speaker 1: of that against uh coming into the weekend games against
- 16:47Speaker 1: you know, the Serbia team on Saturday and again on Monday.
- 16:50Speaker 1: I think that'll be a better test of what the
- 16:52Speaker 1: front court looked like. But it seemed like Sam Alexis
- 16:54Speaker 1: and Reed Bailey both played pretty well in their first
- 16:57Speaker 1: time in an IU uniform.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Yes, sam Alexis, a lot of his looks were just
- 17:02Speaker 2: open dump offs for a dunk, but he was rebounding
- 17:05Speaker 2: the basketball, he was boxing out. It was an impressive
- 17:08Speaker 2: sight to see. But as for Reed Bailey, I was
- 17:11Speaker 2: thoroughly impressed with the way he started the second and
- 17:14Speaker 2: the third quarter. He cannot only get a rebound, but
- 17:19Speaker 2: if there's no one open for an outlet, he's willing
- 17:21Speaker 2: to take the ball up the court himself. And last
- 17:24Speaker 2: year we saw it with Malik Renew. It is a
- 17:26Speaker 2: complete one point eighty. There's actual ball handling skills and
- 17:30Speaker 2: he's comfortable taking it. He went coast to coast off
- 17:32Speaker 2: of a rebound, dished it off, drew a foul, and
- 17:38Speaker 2: it was very nice to see a positionless when he
- 17:42Speaker 2: was on the floor, positionless offense. When Reed Bailey was
- 17:44Speaker 2: on the floor, he was out and he didn't shoot
- 17:47Speaker 2: a three, didn't attempt to three, so you don't really
- 17:49Speaker 2: have anything there. But he was active at for ninety
- 17:54Speaker 2: four feet and it was impressive to me to see
- 17:59Speaker 2: a guy with sighs not just take advantage of the
- 18:04Speaker 2: size against a team like this. He was working out
- 18:07Speaker 2: what he needed to work on and got ten points
- 18:12Speaker 2: and eight rebounds, So I was impressed.
- 18:16Speaker 1: With him in terms of some of the other guys
- 18:19Speaker 1: just just quickly going through Jo High miles it and
- 18:21Speaker 1: seemed like he shot the ball particularly well last night.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Struggled a bit with that. Connor en Wright started, played
- 18:29Speaker 1: seventeen minutes, only score two points. But we know in
- 18:32Speaker 1: terms of stats, you know, Dan Derives talked a little
- 18:35Speaker 1: bit about that he might not be a guy that
- 18:36Speaker 1: the stats ever jump out, but the little things, the
- 18:38Speaker 1: intangibles that he brings are always going to be part
- 18:42Speaker 1: of the deal with him. And then Josh Harris played
- 18:45Speaker 1: gets a double double in fifteen minutes, thirteen points, ten rebounds.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Kind of look at him right now, is one of
- 18:51Speaker 1: the guys maybe a little bit lower down in the
- 18:52Speaker 1: rotation when you look at the depth chart, but I
- 18:54Speaker 1: think it's a good thing for him to get those
- 18:56Speaker 1: minutes and play well. And then Alexa Restitch gets some
- 19:00Speaker 1: some minutes. We didn't know for sure as of last
- 19:02Speaker 1: week if he was going to even be on this trip.
- 19:04Speaker 1: He gets in to Bloomington late last week, score six points,
- 19:09Speaker 1: goes three or six from the field. You know, just
- 19:11Speaker 1: kind of touched on each of those guys a little
- 19:13Speaker 1: bit in terms of what you saw. You can start
- 19:15Speaker 1: with Miles and then if you need a reminder on
- 19:17Speaker 1: any of the guys, I know three four guys at
- 19:19Speaker 1: you there, but hopefully we can just get a brief
- 19:22Speaker 1: rundown on the four of those guys and what you saw.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Yeah, Josi Miles had his struggles yesterday, not only on
- 19:28Speaker 2: offense but defense. The coaching staff was imploring him get
- 19:32Speaker 2: in the gap. That was the big thing at practice
- 19:34Speaker 2: last week is getting in the gap. And they were
- 19:37Speaker 2: really yelling at Josh Harris for the majority of last
- 19:39Speaker 2: week's practice that we saw, But Josi Miles was It
- 19:43Speaker 2: seemed a little bit disjointed out there. In his first game.
- 19:48Speaker 2: It just couldn't get anything going. Got an easy bucket
- 19:51Speaker 2: late to be the last of the players to score.
- 19:55Speaker 2: I think all eleven scored for Indiana. As for Connor
- 19:59Speaker 2: and Wright, looking at a stat sheet doesn't really do
- 20:02Speaker 2: anything for me when it comes to him. I've seen
- 20:05Speaker 2: him play for multiple years now, dating back to high school,
- 20:08Speaker 2: and it's not going to be a stat sheet filling
- 20:11Speaker 2: night every single night for him. He'll have those games.
- 20:14Speaker 2: I think the zero of two from three he's taking
- 20:19Speaker 2: two to three, two to four threes per game would
- 20:22Speaker 2: be fine in a Darren DeVries offense. He decided to
- 20:27Speaker 2: avoid going for a layup at one point. It was
- 20:29Speaker 2: wide open layup on for the three as is, as
- 20:32Speaker 2: you do in an exhibition game. But he's going to
- 20:35Speaker 2: be someone that does all the intangibles in a game
- 20:38Speaker 2: against a competitive team. It's really hard to get going
- 20:42Speaker 2: in that aspect as that kind of player, as a
- 20:45Speaker 2: glue guy kind of player against a team. In August
- 20:49Speaker 2: from Puerto Rico, Josh Harris, I think it was the
- 20:53Speaker 2: next name that you mentioned, correct, all right. It was
- 20:57Speaker 2: one of those games where I think eighty five percent
- 21:01Speaker 2: of those ninety percent of those points and rebounds came
- 21:04Speaker 2: in the second half. But he was using his size
- 21:07Speaker 2: to his advantage in getting buckets and was a fairly
- 21:10Speaker 2: efficient six of nine from the field with those ten rebounds.
- 21:13Speaker 2: One of two Hoosiers with a double double, like you said,
- 21:17Speaker 2: probably lower on the depth chart, but a confidence boost,
- 21:20Speaker 2: kind of like Trent Sisley and then Restitch. We had
- 21:25Speaker 2: no idea if he was gonna play. He's wearing the
- 21:28Speaker 2: number twenty one, even though on the roster his jersey's
- 21:31Speaker 2: number thirteen. That's how new he is to the team.
- 21:36Speaker 2: But he was pretty good. He didn't really jump out
- 21:42Speaker 2: necessarily in his nearly seventeen minutes on the floor, but
- 21:46Speaker 2: just being there watching him warm up. I know I
- 21:49Speaker 2: accidentally posted a video of him missing a layup. And
- 21:53Speaker 2: you win some, you lose some, but his warm up routine,
- 21:57Speaker 2: I don't know if I've seen that many threes made
- 21:59Speaker 2: in a row, so there is potential. And another thing is, sorry,
- 22:04Speaker 2: go back to the warm ups. Those weren't open looks
- 22:07Speaker 2: that they were taking. They were contested. There was a
- 22:10Speaker 2: big emphasis on contested threes during warm ups instead of
- 22:13Speaker 2: just shooting around just to shoot.
- 22:16Speaker 1: The other thing I noticed was from one of the
- 22:18Speaker 1: videos that you put in the highlights, which you don't
- 22:21Speaker 1: usually see video of the bench in a highlight REROLD,
- 22:24Speaker 1: but I thought it was interesting that you put that
- 22:25Speaker 1: in there. There was obviously a reason you did in
- 22:27Speaker 1: terms of the fact that this was I don't know
- 22:30Speaker 1: how many people were there, A couple hundred maybe, is
- 22:33Speaker 1: that is that? If that's that, yeah, okay, so you're
- 22:37Speaker 1: you're playing a game on August sixth, that doesn't count
- 22:41Speaker 1: for anything in Puerto Rico in front of less than
- 22:45Speaker 1: a couple hundred people. You're beating this team pretty convincingly
- 22:49Speaker 1: in the fourth quarter, and the benches or I don't know,
- 22:52Speaker 1: exactly when that clip was it was, it seemed to
- 22:54Speaker 1: be in the second half. The bench was up, cheering.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Everything was that like an consistent thing in terms of
- 23:01Speaker 1: the energy. I mean, that's what we saw in the
- 23:03Speaker 1: open practice last week. Was basically from the minute those
- 23:06Speaker 1: guys jumped came into the gym, it was clapping. It
- 23:10Speaker 1: was everyone in constant movement, Everyone had a role, everyone
- 23:12Speaker 1: was doing something. And when I saw the video that
- 23:15Speaker 1: you showed last night of the bench, that's instantly what
- 23:18Speaker 1: popped into my mind. It was there was nobody sitting down.
- 23:21Speaker 1: They were all cheering, they were all engaged, And to me,
- 23:24Speaker 1: that's kind of how things need to be in terms
- 23:28Speaker 1: of this team, because they're not going to go out
- 23:30Speaker 1: there and win every game just based on the talent.
- 23:33Speaker 1: There's not a ton of NBA guys on this team.
- 23:35Speaker 1: But in terms of the camaraderie and the energy and
- 23:39Speaker 1: the togetherness that they showed, to me, that's a good
- 23:41Speaker 1: sign that the bench is interacting that way in a
- 23:44Speaker 1: game that really means nothing.
- 23:45Speaker 2: In early August, yeah, it wasn't the entire game that
- 23:49Speaker 2: they were standing, but everything good that would happened to
- 23:52Speaker 2: made basket. There was energy not only from the players
- 23:55Speaker 2: but the coaching staff. They were really trying to push
- 23:58Speaker 2: energy and the camaraderie. You saw it in that video
- 24:02Speaker 2: that Indiana posted. I think that was Tuesday, when they
- 24:05Speaker 2: were touring around Old San Juan. I was talking with someone,
- 24:09Speaker 2: this team is so tight knit already here in August in.
- 24:14Speaker 2: This trip was meant for them to all get together
- 24:18Speaker 2: and become a unit. And then from those last eight
- 24:22Speaker 2: weeks of practice that we've heard about to yesterday's game,
- 24:25Speaker 2: you could see that this team was closer than teams
- 24:29Speaker 2: in years past. And like you said, they're not gonna
- 24:32Speaker 2: win based off talent alone. It's gonna be willing themselves
- 24:36Speaker 2: to victories, willing each other to victory. But that video
- 24:40Speaker 2: I posted, because it was a forty five point game
- 24:43Speaker 2: at the time, it was in the fourth quarter and
- 24:47Speaker 2: you had bench players in. You had to walk on in,
- 24:50Speaker 2: and every single starter, including the guys that were also
- 24:53Speaker 2: on the bench, were standing up and doing defense chance
- 24:57Speaker 2: for their teammates. And that's a very good sign because
- 25:01Speaker 2: it's so easy, especially on a vacation trip, to just
- 25:05Speaker 2: start getting squirrely and looking around and talking on the
- 25:07Speaker 2: bench to each other. But there was a focus the
- 25:11Speaker 2: entire time, and then I think I posted in the
- 25:13Speaker 2: highlights as well defensive play made in the first half,
- 25:17Speaker 2: or the entire bench got up and it felt like
- 25:19Speaker 2: they were all going to go pick the guy up.
- 25:21Speaker 2: I can't remember who got got knocked over, but there
- 25:26Speaker 2: was a sense of urgency and a sense of togetherness
- 25:30Speaker 2: in game one of this group.
- 25:34Speaker 1: So what's what's the what's the schedule for the rest
- 25:37Speaker 1: of the week. Obviously there's games on Saturday and Monday.
- 25:40Speaker 1: What what do Indiana fans have to look forward to,
- 25:42Speaker 1: just in terms of the rest of this trip. I
- 25:44Speaker 1: think them is your expectation. The competition levels should step
- 25:48Speaker 1: up over the weekend and we should maybe get a
- 25:50Speaker 1: better sense of of what we're looking at in terms
- 25:52Speaker 1: of this Indiana basketball team.
- 25:54Speaker 2: We will get a good test of what we will see.
- 25:59Speaker 2: I think sad Day's game will be the better tests
- 26:01Speaker 2: rather than the eleven am Monday game. With the flight
- 26:03Speaker 2: coming out against Serbian professional team Mega super Bet is.
- 26:10Speaker 1: They're playing playing the two in a row, and again,
- 26:13Speaker 1: when you're playing a team twice in a couple of days,
- 26:15Speaker 1: who knows what happens on the on the second day.
- 26:18Speaker 1: I agree with you. The Saturday night contest seems like
- 26:20Speaker 1: it'd be the one where they will be more energy
- 26:22Speaker 1: maybe and more and it's it's it's in the bigger arena,
- 26:25Speaker 1: I believe too, the one that's more in San Juan.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Yes, it is in Roberto Clemente believe. But the only
- 26:33Speaker 2: issue is is that there is a Bad Bunny concert.
- 26:36Speaker 2: He has a residency here in San Juan, so okay,
- 26:39Speaker 2: might not have the crowd just given that probably whatever
- 26:45Speaker 2: that place holds where he's going is going to be filled.
- 26:49Speaker 2: I won't be there. I don't listen to Bad Bunny music.
- 26:52Speaker 2: But there there is a there's a sense of all right,
- 26:56Speaker 2: got this game out of the way. Now let's have
- 26:58Speaker 2: a litmus test against a professional team with actual big guys.
- 27:03Speaker 2: You're going to see some big dudes out there, the
- 27:07Speaker 2: big European guys, which you might see in a game
- 27:10Speaker 2: against Illinois and Champagne in January. So it's going to
- 27:14Speaker 2: be a test to see will this lack of size
- 27:18Speaker 2: hurt Indiana or will they be able to run a
- 27:20Speaker 2: big team out of the gym with their speed.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Well, we'll look forward to your coverage and we'll obviously
- 27:26Speaker 1: get your back here on the podcast at some point
- 27:28Speaker 1: over the weekend or early next week to talk about that.
- 27:31Speaker 1: What do you have playing? Just in terms of getting
- 27:34Speaker 1: out and sight seeing, maybe seeing some things around the town.
- 27:37Speaker 1: What have you had a chance to experience so far.
- 27:39Speaker 2: We went around Old San Juan yesterday and that was
- 27:43Speaker 2: a really cool area. I've never been out to Puerto
- 27:46Speaker 2: Rico before, so it was cool being a tourist. Again.
- 27:51Speaker 2: I don't usually play tourists. I don't like playing tourists,
- 27:54Speaker 2: but I feel like I have to might go back
- 27:58Speaker 2: down there or over there. Was that just a walk
- 28:02Speaker 2: for you guys, or it was an uber could have
- 28:05Speaker 2: been a walk, but a little bit of a time
- 28:08Speaker 2: crunch on a game day. But there's a shuttle that
- 28:10Speaker 2: goes to the beach. There's no doubt I'll be playing
- 28:13Speaker 2: in Atlantic Ocean waves at some point. Good hopefully not
- 28:17Speaker 2: by myself. That'd be a little strange, but if I
- 28:20Speaker 2: have to, I will. But I'm excited to see the
- 28:24Speaker 2: food food play here in San Juan. I've heard a
- 28:28Speaker 2: lot about it. Caribbean style food, plantains, all that kind
- 28:31Speaker 2: of stuff. So it's gonna be a dangerous week.
- 28:35Speaker 1: Well, looking forward to it. Josh We're thrilled to have
- 28:38Speaker 1: you as a part of the team. Glad you were
- 28:40Speaker 1: able to make the trip down there. I know everyone

- 28:47Speaker 1: Wednesday night. You only got to do it for two
- 28:49Speaker 1: more games, so no pressure to keep that up. And again,
- 28:52Speaker 1: make sure if you're not falling Josh on on social media,

- 29:02Speaker 1: recap last night. There's highlights, there's press conference video. There's
