- 2:11Speaker 1: stuck indoors me and missus Perry yesterday is We're not
- 2:15Speaker 1: barbecue people, you know, But I went out and bought
- 2:17Speaker 1: a portaball disposable barbecue and we had a little bit
- 2:20Speaker 1: of grub in the back, golden with a little drinking
- 2:22Speaker 1: poop and it was lovely. Okay, so lovely sunny day
- 2:26Speaker 1: talking to lovely sunny days.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Now.
- 2:28Speaker 1: During the week, I caught up with a team of
- 2:30Speaker 1: ladies who took part in the Hive Bay Triathlon, which
- 2:33Speaker 1: was a lovely sunny day. So I'll tell you what.
- 2:36Speaker 1: I have a little listened to this interview and just
- 2:38Speaker 1: wait till you hear the name of this team of
- 2:40Speaker 1: the ladies that took part in the Hive Bay Triathlon. Sunday,
- 2:44Speaker 1: the eighteenth of August at the High Swimming Pool, ashfrad
- 2:47Speaker 1: Try Club hosted the Hyde Bay Triathlon, taking part in
- 2:51Speaker 1: the swim bike run competition. We're a team of six ladies,
- 2:54Speaker 1: four of whom are with me now. So let's start
- 2:57Speaker 1: by having a chat with the lady who put this
- 2:58Speaker 1: team together, Julie griff Being Hello, Julie, how are you? Yeah? Good?
- 3:02Speaker 1: Thanks and thanks for getting there four of them together.
- 3:04Speaker 1: That's quite a feat in itself. First of all, Julie,
- 3:08Speaker 1: your team. It must have a name. What's your name?
- 3:10Speaker 3: We've called ourselves the Scrambled Legs because our legs are
- 3:13Speaker 3: killing us at.
- 3:14Speaker 1: The end of it. Scrambled Legs. Oh, I love it.
- 3:16Speaker 1: I love it. I mean, what a great idea. It
- 3:19Speaker 1: must have been. Will and truly lost scrambled last time?
- 3:21Speaker 1: Overcooked perhaps even.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Yes, definitely, it was very, very tough last week. But
- 3:25Speaker 3: we had some real great supporters.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Okay, so take us back. How long was you know?
- 3:31Speaker 1: How did you manage to cook in all these ladies?
- 3:34Speaker 3: Well, Victoria and I had both done the first trifle
- 3:38Speaker 3: on a few years ago, and I wanted to do
- 3:41Speaker 3: another one. Vic wasn't keen, so then I wrote cat
- 3:44Speaker 3: in and she persuaded the others. So then Vic went, oh,
- 3:48Speaker 3: I love to.
- 3:49Speaker 4: Do it now.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Okay, So yeah, it ended up.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Originally there was eight of us.
- 3:54Speaker 3: We was hoping that it was going to be seven
- 3:55Speaker 3: this year, but one of them couldn't make it, so
- 3:58Speaker 3: it was down to the six.
- 4:00Speaker 1: And this event was due to take place in May,
- 4:02Speaker 1: but it was canceled right at the last minute. I mean,
- 4:05Speaker 1: did that kind of put you back? Because of your training.
- 4:08Speaker 3: No, actually it was a bonus because the Astra tri
- 4:11Speaker 3: Club put on swimming lessons over Ashra swimming pool, which
- 4:16Speaker 3: really helped us improve our techniques. They also put it
- 4:19Speaker 3: on some bike lessons that you could go along to
- 4:22Speaker 3: to help improve your techniques as well, and I believe
- 4:25Speaker 3: some running ones, but couldn't quite fit those on.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Right, Okay, I mean you had before that, had you
- 4:30Speaker 1: had any experience of trifle ons?
- 4:33Speaker 2: No?
- 4:34Speaker 3: It was again years ago a couple of the girls
- 4:37Speaker 3: from here at the hockey club said, oh, we're going
- 4:39Speaker 3: to do a triathlon and we thought, yeah, let's do that.
- 4:42Speaker 4: It will keep us fit and lot of trouble.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Okay, And for you personally, three events, What was the
- 4:48Speaker 1: strongest event.
- 4:50Speaker 3: I'm not really strong in any.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Now you are, you must be strong in all of
- 4:55Speaker 1: them if you're the same.
- 4:56Speaker 3: I hate the cycle because cycling up Sangate hill, I
- 4:59Speaker 3: just yeah, I struggle.
- 5:01Speaker 1: I will cut that one.
- 5:02Speaker 3: So I guess probably the swim is probably my strongest part.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Right. But you've got you've got a history of playing hockey,
- 5:10Speaker 1: so that gives you a basic experience of you know,
- 5:13Speaker 1: what it likes to hurt and things like that. Yeah.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Yeah, we're all used to the Yeah, the training, but
- 5:19Speaker 3: you're using different muscles for each of.
- 5:21Speaker 1: The events, so let's be Vicky. I had a Vicky
- 5:23Speaker 1: now then Vicky. Judy just told me that you did
- 5:27Speaker 1: the first one but you didn't want to go back again.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Is that right? Yeah, that's definitely right.
- 5:31Speaker 4: No one's persuades me to do things I don't really
- 5:32Speaker 4: want to.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Do, okay, and so so was there a bit of
- 5:35Speaker 1: peer pressure so to put you you know, and then
- 5:38Speaker 1: you caved in very much.
- 5:40Speaker 5: So I wasn't the last one that given. This time
- 5:41Speaker 5: we have got a team member that joined very late,
- 5:44Speaker 5: so fear of missing out. But yeah, it's a peer pressure.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Makes me do lots of things. Yeah. Yeah, that's not
- 5:50Speaker 1: a bad thing though, is it. I mean when you
- 5:51Speaker 1: look back now me, can you say that you were
- 5:53Speaker 1: glad you did the second one? I'm definitely glad to
- 5:55Speaker 1: do it. Yeah, I enjoyed it. Yeah. And did you
- 5:58Speaker 1: join in with the training that the Astra Right club? Yeah?
- 6:00Speaker 1: I did the training really really useful groups. And they
- 6:04Speaker 1: must have given you a bit of confidence for the
- 6:06Speaker 1: other Sunday surely, Yeah, lots.
- 6:08Speaker 5: Of confidence doing it. No, I'm not particularly fitting the run,
- 6:10Speaker 5: don't enjoy the run at all. Some of the cycle
- 6:13Speaker 5: I was much happier with I went to the lessons
- 6:15Speaker 5: on them.
- 6:16Speaker 1: So yeah, really good, excellent, Right, Okay, we're going to
- 6:19Speaker 1: switch now to Katrina. Katrina, how are you all right?
- 6:22Speaker 4: I'm very well, thank you.
- 6:23Speaker 1: How I'm good? I'm good. They are right. Juggling all
- 6:27Speaker 1: these three disciplines is pretty tough. What do you do
- 6:30Speaker 1: for a living?
- 6:31Speaker 4: I'm a driving instructor.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Okay, so my servage benefits if people say, oh, I
- 6:36Speaker 1: want to, I want to I want to listen at
- 6:38Speaker 1: seven o'clock on Tuesday. Sorry I'm booked.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, my my work star is my own.
- 6:47Speaker 2: So that does make for me to be able to
- 6:50Speaker 2: put in the training that I needed to do easier.
- 6:55Speaker 2: But you know, I think a lot of people are
- 6:57Speaker 2: juggling work life balance and it's good to get, you know,
- 7:00Speaker 2: the the exercise in. And certainly what hasn't been mentioned
- 7:05Speaker 2: already is we all went to Park Run as well
- 7:07Speaker 2: every Saturday, and that's a really supportive event every Saturday morning.
- 7:13Speaker 4: So that helped us with the running.
- 7:16Speaker 2: And yeah, we attended to pull together once a week mainly.
- 7:22Speaker 4: So yeah, well we all just supported.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Each other and even at the event, the support we
- 7:29Speaker 2: got from everybody participating and on the sidelines was huge.
- 7:34Speaker 1: And that's the bit that And did you did you
- 7:36Speaker 1: find that you could all get together or did you
- 7:40Speaker 1: kind of have to go from your bike on your
- 7:41Speaker 1: own or go for running your own?
- 7:43Speaker 2: Well, my favorite bit was the running. I do run anyway,
- 7:48Speaker 2: so I'm quite happy plugging on my headphones and going
- 7:52Speaker 2: off and doing that. So I say the park rond
- 7:56Speaker 2: got us together for that. Otherwise I would tend to
- 7:59Speaker 2: go off and do that on my own.
- 8:02Speaker 4: We yes, so we went into the.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Pool regularly together and yeah, it is, it is. It
- 8:10Speaker 2: is helpful when you've got people around you to do
- 8:12Speaker 2: it together, because you know, I remember Vicky saying to me, oh,
- 8:16Speaker 2: you know a few more lengths and we've done a
- 8:17Speaker 2: mile in here and I'm ready to get out.
- 8:19Speaker 1: So yeah, so the encouragement and again the bit of
- 8:22Speaker 1: pressure there you can't down because you did give me
- 8:25Speaker 1: a bit of stick there and yeah right, and a
- 8:29Speaker 1: little Bertie tells me you're doing a great north front.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Yeah, that's why the riding was quite a cute.
- 8:37Speaker 1: How did you find the five k though, I mean
- 8:38Speaker 1: was he tough after the two Yeah, discipline.
- 8:41Speaker 2: About scrambled legs, but jelly legs definitely starting.
- 8:44Speaker 4: In that first kilometer.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Yeah, but you know, once you start again, you've got
- 8:50Speaker 2: all the people running up and down the seafront and
- 8:53Speaker 2: there we were encouraging each other. Only got kilometer left
- 8:56Speaker 2: to go, remember Vicky saying that's me or a couple
- 8:58Speaker 2: of columns left to go. So and with the run,
- 9:02Speaker 2: you're nearly at the end. So you just pushed through
- 9:04Speaker 2: at the end. But yeah, not so much cycling for
- 9:07Speaker 2: me in preparation, but the swimming in the run in good.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Okay, this switched to Vicky and hell, Vicky, good now, VICKI,
- 9:15Speaker 1: so what can I say? I asked all the same questions.
- 9:18Speaker 1: But how was the day for you? Oh?
- 9:21Speaker 6: I was over the moon of the day. So I've
- 9:23Speaker 6: recently had a child, she's just hurned one in July.
- 9:26Speaker 4: So the triathlon was a.
- 9:27Speaker 6: Way for me to get back into fitness, have the
- 9:30Speaker 6: support of my phones around me to try to improve,
- 9:33Speaker 6: to see how things go.
- 9:34Speaker 4: So, yeah, I had a great day.
- 9:36Speaker 1: So you've so you've how long you been training? And
- 9:39Speaker 1: if you had a child a year ago then so.
- 9:41Speaker 6: I started back at hockey in January to ease myself
- 9:44Speaker 6: back into a bit of running, bit of fitness. February
- 9:47Speaker 6: I went back to park run, but training for the
- 9:49Speaker 6: tribe probably maybe since March, not long.
- 9:53Speaker 1: So the cancelation in that must have done you a favorite?
- 9:56Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, I was very thankful.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Yeah right, And so as do you find juggling a
- 10:03Speaker 1: young child and and all your training supportive? Husband?
- 10:07Speaker 6: Absolutely, he's brilliant, so he will more than happily let
- 10:10Speaker 6: me go out go for run, cycle, swim evening Saturday
- 10:14Speaker 6: mornings during the week and take little one and then
- 10:18Speaker 6: we swap over because he plays cricket at the weekend
- 10:20Speaker 6: as well.
- 10:21Speaker 1: A give and take a right, Yeah, I was nice
- 10:23Speaker 1: to have a supporty husband, actually, isn't it, because then
- 10:26Speaker 1: he understands what you're going through. Yeah yeah, so you
- 10:28Speaker 1: let him play cricket and the great So once again,
- 10:35Speaker 1: out of the three disciplines, which one was your favorite
- 10:37Speaker 1: or the strongest?
- 10:38Speaker 4: My strongest is a swim.
- 10:40Speaker 6: Yeah, without trying to blow around here, and I'm quite
- 10:44Speaker 6: good at all three, but I enjoy the swim the
- 10:48Speaker 6: most and I'm more anxious about the run.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, okay, But but you understand, you
- 10:53Speaker 1: all play hockey, so you've obviously got the core strength
- 10:56Speaker 1: that you've built up over the years, and a lot
- 10:59Speaker 1: of cardio strengths as well, so that must pull you
- 11:01Speaker 1: through all three events.
- 11:03Speaker 6: You definitely feel it the most when you transition from
- 11:05Speaker 6: the cycle to the run. Your legs struggle to adapt
- 11:08Speaker 6: and you've got to find your rhythm of your stride.
- 11:11Speaker 6: But once you get into that, it's okay to kind
- 11:13Speaker 6: of mentally then pull yourself through.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Okay, excellent, Okay, so you'll be back to you on
- 11:19Speaker 1: the day. I mean, how does it work you all
- 11:21Speaker 1: go in the swim, I know, but I saw a
- 11:23Speaker 1: picture of you all coming in and you're all pretty
- 11:26Speaker 1: close together. And do you stay together or you do
- 11:28Speaker 1: your own thing?
- 11:29Speaker 3: No, we especially this time, we didn't go in the
- 11:34Speaker 3: same time.
- 11:35Speaker 4: Before on the other triathlons, we've arranged that we all
- 11:38Speaker 4: go together, but we.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Decided this time we were going to split up and
- 11:42Speaker 3: go our own times. But we've all got the same
- 11:44Speaker 3: color shirts, so as we're going around, we can spot
- 11:47Speaker 3: each other, cheer each other on as we're passing each other.
- 11:50Speaker 1: They all got lots of grambled egg.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Motive for them, but At the end, we all check
- 11:57Speaker 3: to make sure everybody's in, and whoever's the last one in,
- 12:00Speaker 3: we all go back.
- 12:01Speaker 4: To a certain point and we all run in together so.
- 12:03Speaker 1: That they're not on their own, so your times will
- 12:05Speaker 1: be pretty close together.
- 12:06Speaker 3: Then really, yeah, well we've all come in and registered,
- 12:09Speaker 3: but then the one who's last we always go back
- 12:12Speaker 3: and come back in with them all okay, And through
- 12:14Speaker 3: it we've made a great friendship and we have regular
- 12:16Speaker 3: games nights.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Now, yeah, I'll do you.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Yeah, we're all very supportive to each other's great.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Excellent Vicky, you've done two, would you do a third one?
- 12:25Speaker 4: Definitely?
- 12:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:26Speaker 5: I think we're already signed up for that, so I
- 12:27Speaker 5: want you to be a pressure this time.
- 12:29Speaker 4: We're definitely going to.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Be doing it. Okay, And have you just done the
- 12:33Speaker 1: High Bay one? Have you ever ventured out to another triathlon?
- 12:36Speaker 4: We did one endover.
- 12:37Speaker 5: We did the door triathlon that was based up at
- 12:38Speaker 5: the Sports Center at Wickfield.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, but.
- 12:41Speaker 5: We didn't enjoy that one quite so much. They're still
- 12:42Speaker 5: in most events, still really supportive, but the one don't know,
- 12:45Speaker 5: there's got a nice view of the sea, so much
- 12:48Speaker 5: more pleasant experience through the industrial.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Estate we found. Okay, excellent and so turn it back
- 12:53Speaker 1: to you, Katrina, and now you've got the Great North
- 12:54Speaker 1: Ron coming up. Did they interfere with your training to
- 12:58Speaker 1: do the cipling and the scream?
- 13:01Speaker 2: No, because well I think that the swimming helps you
- 13:06Speaker 2: ultimately with your fitness for your running, So that was
- 13:10Speaker 2: I'm hoping that it's all helps in the bigger picture.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Not a massive cyclist, so I haven't been out on
- 13:18Speaker 2: the bike very much, but yeah, no, having the Great
- 13:21Speaker 2: North Run there as well?
- 13:23Speaker 1: When there have you done a half a marathon before?
- 13:25Speaker 4: I have?
- 13:26Speaker 2: Yeah, but this is probably the biggest event that I
- 13:33Speaker 2: will be joining.
- 13:36Speaker 4: Exactly. Yeah, I might need a few get me through.
- 13:42Speaker 1: It is okay, Vicky. The bet you then, so, was
- 13:47Speaker 1: that your second? Did you do the first bay? Or
- 13:50Speaker 1: did was not your first Triflon?
- 13:54Speaker 6: It's not my first. I've done that many years ago
- 13:56Speaker 6: when I was a bit younger. I did the Dartford
- 13:58Speaker 6: Triflon which is all usprint, and then I did the
- 14:02Speaker 6: Hive Bay.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Back in twenty eighteen. Do we do twenty eighteen with
- 14:07Speaker 4: these guys?
- 14:08Speaker 6: I was quite grateful that last year had been canceled
- 14:11Speaker 6: because I was pregnant last year, I had been gutted
- 14:13Speaker 6: not to join in and.
- 14:14Speaker 4: Then was able to join in again this year.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Right, okay, excellent, Now last word with you then, Julie. Okay,
- 14:21Speaker 1: it's been a great team effort. But I mean you
- 14:23Speaker 1: can speak on behalf of the others if you like.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Is there any thank you that you've got to say? Yep,
- 14:27Speaker 1: we'd like.
- 14:28Speaker 3: To thank all the supporters, especially Kendra Charman, who normally
- 14:32Speaker 3: does compete with us but couldn't issue. But when we
- 14:34Speaker 3: went out for a couple of troll bike rides, she
- 14:37Speaker 3: came with us because she is a very good cyclist
- 14:40Speaker 3: and helped those who were struggling, so that was great.
- 14:43Speaker 3: She was also there on the morning of the triathlon,
- 14:46Speaker 3: didn't say a word to us that it was her birthday,
- 14:49Speaker 3: so she was there right from the beginning to support us.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Her husband Simon came down and helped as well. Vicky's
- 14:55Speaker 3: husband Dave came down, and Katrina's friends Becka well Kirsty's
- 15:00Speaker 3: sister Becker came down to support us and both their
- 15:03Speaker 3: parents as well, so that was very nice and we
- 15:06Speaker 3: had great support along the whole.
- 15:08Speaker 1: And what did you do afterwards in the afternoon? Did
- 15:10Speaker 1: you all go.
- 15:11Speaker 3: Yeah, tradition is we all go and have a great
- 15:14Speaker 3: big English breath.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Lovely just to finish it all off. Yeah, Scrambled Eggs
- 15:18Speaker 1: on total. Yeah yeah great. As to Vicky, I'm sorry, Juliet,
- 15:25Speaker 1: is a great story, and I want to thank you
- 15:27Speaker 1: for getting the ladies together. And we want to say
- 15:30Speaker 1: we're sorry that Rona and Kirsty couldn't make it, but
- 15:32Speaker 1: we want to give them a special mention and we
- 15:35Speaker 1: look forward to hearing how many is in the Scrambled
- 15:38Speaker 1: Legs team next year.
- 15:39Speaker 4: Yes, thank you very much for us. You'll see if
- 15:41Speaker 4: we can't get any more additions.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Okay, thanks, thanks, So there you go. That was Julie Griffin,
- 15:46Speaker 1: Vicky Baxter, Katrina Peak, and Vicky Jones for the Scrambled
- 15:50Speaker 1: Legs team. But we must forget the two other members
- 15:52Speaker 1: who couldn't make the interview. That was Roona Freyer and
- 15:55Speaker 1: Kirsty Johnson. And I caught up with those ladies down
- 15:58Speaker 1: at the Three Hills and I just admire the way
- 16:01Speaker 1: they bonded together. You know, it was great that they
- 16:04Speaker 1: waited for that last person on the run to come in,
- 16:06Speaker 1: whoever she may be, but they stuck together. And they're
- 16:10Speaker 1: going to do it again next year, so that would
- 16:12Speaker 1: be really something to look forward to. Now I'll be
- 16:14Speaker 1: looking through the playlist and I can't believe this. I
- 16:17Speaker 1: put in a sort of a search the word legs
- 16:20Speaker 1: and guess what'll come up, and say littles and this
- 16:22Speaker 1: is for the Gramble Legs. It's as easy Top and
- 16:25Speaker 1: a song called legs. That was easy Top there and
- 16:45Speaker 1: a song called Legs. Last Saturday it was the Park Run. Well,
- 16:51Speaker 1: I know I've been going on about this for a
- 16:52Speaker 1: few weeks now, but you know it's really important because
- 16:57Speaker 1: it reached its tenth birthday and how amazing is that
- 17:00Speaker 1: in twenty fourteen, I think there was just one hundred
- 17:03Speaker 1: and thirty six it took part and it's just gone
- 17:08Speaker 1: from strength to strength, it really has. So what I
- 17:11Speaker 1: did after the park Run on Saturday, I caught up
- 17:15Speaker 1: with a gentleman who was the event director and his
- 17:19Speaker 1: name's Trevor, and so let's have a little listen to
- 17:22Speaker 1: what he has to say. Okay, now I'm up on
- 17:25Speaker 1: the leaves and we've just finished the Folks and Part
- 17:28Speaker 1: Round tenth anniversary, and I'm joined now by the event
- 17:31Speaker 1: director Trevor devout Trevor, how did it go for you?
- 17:34Speaker 7: I had a great time, and I think everyone else
- 17:36Speaker 7: did too. I had a lot of great feedback from
- 17:39Speaker 7: people who came out and enjoyed themselves. They stood in
- 17:42Speaker 7: the rain, they had a great warm up. We got
- 17:45Speaker 7: to listen to some really great guests who write the enthusiasm.
- 17:50Speaker 7: I had a great time.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Yeah, okay. Did it take much of preparing used it
- 17:55Speaker 1: as an event director?
- 17:57Speaker 7: Oh yeah, It's actually surprising how much crap it takes
- 18:01Speaker 7: just to use the band's stand. We have to put
- 18:02Speaker 7: a permit in several months out, and of course, you know,
- 18:05Speaker 7: for certain guests, you want to make sure you get
- 18:07Speaker 7: in touch far enough in advance because they could be
- 18:09Speaker 7: in demand. And then also trying to track down personnel
- 18:14Speaker 7: like past run directors who you know may have moved
- 18:16Speaker 7: away and things like that. So just having to reach
- 18:19Speaker 7: out to people takes a bit of work as well.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, okay, And so for the benefit of our listeners,
- 18:24Speaker 1: just kind of run us through the foremost side of things.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Who's there.
- 18:28Speaker 7: So we had six invited guests as well as our
- 18:31Speaker 7: entire run director corps. We welcomed counselor Jim Martin. We
- 18:37Speaker 7: also had three past Run directors, Jenny Downs, Rob Hwish
- 18:42Speaker 7: and Maggie Rose who Rob and Maggie were founding Run directors.
- 18:46Speaker 7: And then we also had wilbrid Grieves, our Olympic hurdler
- 18:51Speaker 7: and he was our guest starter for the day, so
- 18:53Speaker 7: it was great to have him in that.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Yeah, that was good because a little people I don't
- 18:56Speaker 1: think when Wilbert speaking, he's a very motist man. I
- 19:00Speaker 1: don't think they realized just how, you know, how high
- 19:04Speaker 1: in athletics that he went. He actually represented England in
- 19:07Speaker 1: one hundred and ten and four hundred meters of hurdles
- 19:10Speaker 1: in the Olympic and the Commonwealth Games. So it's quite
- 19:13Speaker 1: cool to getting.
- 19:13Speaker 7: Back absolutely, you know, and I reached out to a
- 19:16Speaker 7: number of Olympians who you know, represented not only Great
- 19:20Speaker 7: Britain but our area and you know, I'm really fortunate
- 19:24Speaker 7: that he responded to be able to come out and
- 19:27Speaker 7: and join us on the.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Day and the runners himself. Do you think they had
- 19:31Speaker 1: a good chilling? Absolutely.
- 19:33Speaker 7: One of the great things about Park Run is that
- 19:36Speaker 7: it's different from a race where you know, you've got
- 19:38Speaker 7: lots of spectators. Most of the people at Park Run
- 19:41Speaker 7: are participating and a lot of times the most memorable
- 19:45Speaker 7: events happened when.
- 19:46Speaker 1: There's awful weather.
- 19:47Speaker 7: You know, we get so used to having a gorgeous view,
- 19:50Speaker 7: but you know when when it's raining sideways, it just
- 19:53Speaker 7: adds to the fun.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, the runners a pretty hardy bunch and
- 19:57Speaker 1: it was good of them to kind of come the
- 20:00Speaker 1: early and enjoyed the warm up. And that was the
- 20:02Speaker 1: first third part run. Tell us how you managed to
- 20:04Speaker 1: didn't dream that up?
- 20:05Speaker 7: So the folks in Running Athletics Club has a great coach,
- 20:09Speaker 7: Katherine O'Connor, and I just rung up and said, hey,
- 20:12Speaker 7: you know, I think we've got everybody together a little
- 20:14Speaker 7: bit of time. Why don't we do a warm up,
- 20:16Speaker 7: get everybody moving together. It could be a great way
- 20:18Speaker 7: to build some community and have some fun. And so
- 20:21Speaker 7: she came out in her in her too two and
- 20:24Speaker 7: her her pink leg warmers ahead shed living Newton John
- 20:27Speaker 7: thing up there and got everybody moving, got physical.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it was great. It was great. And so what's
- 20:33Speaker 1: the next big function if you like? On the calendar
- 20:36Speaker 1: of part run? Is there anything going on between now
- 20:39Speaker 1: and Christmas?
- 20:40Speaker 6: Really?
- 20:40Speaker 7: The big thing that we're looking forward to is probably
- 20:42Speaker 7: our tinsil run on the twenty first of December. We're
- 20:45Speaker 7: going to have a special run going to dress up Santa, costumes, reindeer,
- 20:49Speaker 7: you name it, and yeah, we'll look forward to seeing
- 20:52Speaker 7: people come out in their fancy dress for that one.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Okay, Well, Trevor, thanks for joining me today and taking
- 20:57Speaker 1: the time, and thank you for all the whole work
- 20:59Speaker 1: you did get in this together. I really really did
- 21:01Speaker 1: a magnificent job. And I'm sure all the runners appreciate
- 21:05Speaker 1: you and all the work that all the other run
- 21:06Speaker 1: directors do and all the volunteers they did get recognized
- 21:10Speaker 1: properly well and truely you didn't they yesterday.
- 21:11Speaker 7: Absolutely and we tried to do everything we can to
- 21:13Speaker 7: recognize the volunteers.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Can't do it without him.
- 21:16Speaker 7: And thank you very much for coming out and being
- 21:19Speaker 7: irmc for the day. It's always fun having you around.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Thanks and I really enjoyed it. Oh well, here's in
- 21:22Speaker 1: the next ten years, Trevor. Absolutely, thank you. So there
- 21:25Speaker 1: you go. That was Trevor devout too. So the formal
- 21:27Speaker 1: guests to the show actually, and he's been in the
- 21:29Speaker 1: studio before now so and he worked really hard to
- 21:32Speaker 1: get that event together. Just a shame about the weather,
- 21:35Speaker 1: but as he said, everyone had a great time. Now,
- 21:38Speaker 1: one thing that was a first for part Run. If
- 21:42Speaker 1: you can picture it, all these events, this event of
- 21:45Speaker 1: last Saturday was on the bandstand. Now, I was lucky
- 21:48Speaker 1: I was on the bandstand. I was MC for the day,
- 21:50Speaker 1: so I was probably the driest person at the park Run,
- 21:54Speaker 1: but we had. As he said, the Cafarine O'Connor came
- 21:56Speaker 1: up and I don't know if it was out of
- 22:00Speaker 1: her comfort zone, it didn't show it. She did a
- 22:02Speaker 1: warm up to the music and I've just got to
- 22:05Speaker 1: play this because this is what the park Run team
- 22:08Speaker 1: on Saturday were warming up to. There you go, as
- 22:32Speaker 1: Olivia Newton, Johnny, Oh my god, I've just been doing
- 22:35Speaker 1: a warm up in the studio here. You'd have to
- 22:38Speaker 1: excuse me anyway, gatherin. That one's for you. Thank you
- 22:40Speaker 1: so much for doing such a great job at the weekend. Okay,
- 22:44Speaker 1: so really swiftly moving on. We've got loads and I
- 22:46Speaker 1: don't know if I'll get through all, but so I
- 22:48Speaker 1: will do my best. Start with a bit of football
- 22:51Speaker 1: news now. Well being a bank holiday, it was a
- 22:53Speaker 1: busy weekend for our local football clubs. Folks And in Victor
- 22:56Speaker 1: lost one neil at home to Cray Valley in Victor
- 22:59Speaker 1: ended up with just nine players on the pitch, but
- 23:01Speaker 1: they came back on Monday with an excellent two to
- 23:03Speaker 1: one away win at Hastings. This Saturday, they're an action
- 23:07Speaker 1: away at Ramsgay in the first qualifying round of the
- 23:10Speaker 1: FA Cup, worth two two hundred and fifty pounds to
- 23:13Speaker 1: the winners and seven hundred and fifty pounds to the losers.
- 23:16Speaker 1: So to catch all the folks in Victor news, please
- 23:19Speaker 1: tune in on Saturday here on Radio Folkstone one oh
- 23:22Speaker 1: five point nine to the eighty Hawks Saturday Sports Show
- 23:25Speaker 1: and it brings you up to date on folks and
- 23:28Speaker 1: in Victor. Hawkins Town Drew won all away to Kent
- 23:31Speaker 1: United on Saturday, but lost four to away to Ramsgate
- 23:34Speaker 1: Athletic on Monday. This week they are home to bexleyt
- 23:38Speaker 1: Hive sound didn't never go and no sorry, they didn't
- 23:41Speaker 1: have a good weekend, losing four neil to Beckenham on
- 23:43Speaker 1: Saturday and then for nil at home to Shippe United
- 23:47Speaker 1: on Monday. They have no game this Saturday, but on
- 23:49Speaker 1: Tuesday it's their term to visit Ramsgate in a league fixture.
- 23:54Speaker 1: So switching to rugby now will it soon be the
- 23:56Speaker 1: rugby season for Folkston down at Burlington Fields and the
- 23:59Speaker 1: first of their final preseason friendly on Saturday at home
- 24:02Speaker 1: to Dover. Their first game in the league is on
- 24:05Speaker 1: Saturday the seventh of September away to Medway and their
- 24:09Speaker 1: first home game is the following week against Old Allenians
- 24:12Speaker 1: who come from Dulich in Southeast London. The second team's
- 24:16Speaker 1: first game is on Saturday the fourteenth of September away
- 24:19Speaker 1: to Tunbridge Wells and then at home to Aylesford. Now
- 24:23Speaker 1: they're running a ladies team. The ladies start on Sunday
- 24:26Speaker 1: the fifteenth or way to seven Oaks, then home to
- 24:29Speaker 1: Cranbrook and throughout the season they will be traveling to
- 24:32Speaker 1: venues such as Eastbourne, Maystone, Tunbridge Wells, Sheppey and Edenbridge.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Now a bit of news now about training times for
- 24:42Speaker 1: the youth sections. Now I love this first little bit.
- 24:45Speaker 1: It's a new section called the Mini Rutgers. Yes I
- 24:48Speaker 1: did say that correctly, the Mini Ruggers. That's four to
- 24:52Speaker 1: six year olds that they train on a Sunday between
- 24:54Speaker 1: nine and ten am. And this starts on Sunday, the
- 24:57Speaker 1: one to September. That's this Sunday. Now I'd love to
- 25:01Speaker 1: see I'd love to see this one four to six
- 25:03Speaker 1: year olds playing rugby, but of course it'll only be
- 25:05Speaker 1: some sort of touch rugby. They've got plenty of time
- 25:08Speaker 1: for scrums and lineouts and things like that. The under
- 25:11Speaker 1: sevens and under eights up to the under sixteenes also
- 25:15Speaker 1: train on Sundays, that's between ten and eleven thirty depending
- 25:19Speaker 1: on fixtures, and the under elevens to under sixteens also
- 25:23Speaker 1: train on Thursdays six till seven pm. Now there's a
- 25:27Speaker 1: thriving youth section up at the folks In Rugby Club
- 25:30Speaker 1: and this is the perfect opportunity for your child to
- 25:33Speaker 1: make a start. For further information, please visit the club's
- 25:36Speaker 1: Facebook page, where there is a link to their website.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Now the Squeeze in a bit of running news. Now, Now,
- 25:43Speaker 1: if you cast your mind back to just before Christmas
- 25:46Speaker 1: last year, two of my guests, Darren Scrivens and Amy Seeger,
- 25:49Speaker 1: came into the studio and told us about how they
- 25:52Speaker 1: took part in a ten k running event in Ethiopia,
- 25:56Speaker 1: where they've just returned from Rykovik in Iceland where run
- 26:00Speaker 1: a ten k in very windy conditions in temperatures very
- 26:03Speaker 1: close to zero. So now I hope to chat with
- 26:07Speaker 1: them soon and get a full of report or even
- 26:09Speaker 1: get them back in the studio. So to recap, last
- 26:12Speaker 1: year they'd been running at altitude in the heat of
- 26:14Speaker 1: Ethiopia and recently they'd been running in the freezing temperatures
- 26:18Speaker 1: in Iceland. Man, what a difference, okay, So moving on
- 26:22Speaker 1: a quick song now from Shakira Shakira. The hips don't lie,
- 26:28Speaker 1: nor were there nor fighting, Shakira said, goodness like this
- 26:42Speaker 1: that was Shakira Shakira and her hips don't lie. Ryan,
- 26:50Speaker 1: Moving on there, We've got some tennis news now. On Sunday,
- 26:53Speaker 1: the eighth of September from ten till three is an
- 26:56Speaker 1: open day at the Hive Lawn Tennis Club. They have
- 27:00Speaker 1: two former GB Davis Cup players playing and professionals Danny
- 27:05Speaker 1: Sapsford and Martin Lee Baby joining them for a fun
- 27:08Speaker 1: day including junior and adult coaching plus exhibition matches. And
- 27:13Speaker 1: this is interesting, who has got the fastest serve? They
- 27:17Speaker 1: must have had. They must have one of them meter
- 27:19Speaker 1: things to set up to see. So who's got the
- 27:21Speaker 1: fastest serves over So please go to the High Lawn
- 27:24Speaker 1: Tennis Club Facebook page for all the information and if
- 27:27Speaker 1: you wonder where it is, it's a bit of a
- 27:28Speaker 1: hidden gym really. If you've ever been to the Hive
- 27:33Speaker 1: Cricket Club or you've been down there and doing a
- 27:36Speaker 1: boot fair or something like that, as you come out
- 27:38Speaker 1: of the pavilion, if you look to your left, that's
- 27:41Speaker 1: where the tennis club is, so pop along there. On
- 27:44Speaker 1: the eighth of September. Now a bit of mixed hockey
- 27:47Speaker 1: hockey news. Now throughout the summer, I've been following the
- 27:50Speaker 1: mixed hockey competition taking place at the Three Hills. Well
- 27:54Speaker 1: this Friday, it's semi finals and finals night. In the
- 27:58Speaker 1: semis Madstone Iguanadon play at Cliftonville and in the other
- 28:02Speaker 1: semi final. It's just the way it's gone. Really listen
- 28:05Speaker 1: to this. Canterbury Green team have got to play the
- 28:07Speaker 1: Canterbury Red team. Now both those games start at seven
- 28:11Speaker 1: then at eight thirty the winners of the two games
- 28:13Speaker 1: play each other in the final and that's Friday night.
- 28:16Speaker 1: So if I can get older the scores, I will
- 28:18Speaker 1: announce them on eighty Dowks's Saturday morning sports show between
- 28:22Speaker 1: ten and eleven right here on Radio Folkston. So coming
- 28:26Speaker 1: up now, we're going to squeeze a bit more music
- 28:28Speaker 1: in and why not. This is a lovely sports show
- 28:30Speaker 1: with the lovely lovely list songs. So we're going to
- 28:33Speaker 1: play a bit of Big Yellow Taxi with Counting Crows
- 28:35Speaker 1: and Vanessa. Big Yellow Taxi there with Counting Crows and Vanessa. Well,
- 28:58Speaker 1: you know what, I don't think on that particular song,
- 29:00Speaker 1: it was quite unique, I don't think, and there's a
- 29:03Speaker 1: good version, but I don't think you can be the original,
- 29:05Speaker 1: do you? Okay? Cricket news now, so let's bring up
- 29:08Speaker 1: to date with the local cricket results. And this won't
- 29:11Speaker 1: take long because the awful weather on Saturday there was
- 29:14Speaker 1: no local games played as rain stopped all of them playing.
- 29:18Speaker 1: The forecast looks a bit better for this Saturday, so
- 29:20Speaker 1: let's run through the fixtures. Folks in first eleven are
- 29:23Speaker 1: at home to Notllington. Hawkins are away to Canterbury. Third
- 29:27Speaker 1: eleven Hive Cricket Club have a local derby at Saltwood
- 29:30Speaker 1: Cricket Club. Hive Green Cricket Club are at home to
- 29:33Speaker 1: Tentendon and Sipton Park are at home to Ash. So
- 29:37Speaker 1: let's just update you on where our local clubs are
- 29:39Speaker 1: in their respective divisions as the season draws to an end.
- 29:44Speaker 1: In the Kent Cricket League, Division one, Folks in our
- 29:46Speaker 1: top with just two games to go. In Division eight
- 29:50Speaker 1: Shepherd Section, Hawkins are fifth out of ten. In Division
- 29:54Speaker 1: nine Shepherd Section, with ten teams we have, Hive Cricket
- 29:58Speaker 1: Club are top. I've Green a third salt with the
- 30:01Speaker 1: seventh and Folks and thirty eleven or ninth and all
- 30:05Speaker 1: these teams. Funny enough, they've all on par they've all
- 30:07Speaker 1: got two games left. And finally in Division nine Hurrycan Section,
- 30:12Speaker 1: Siptum Park are sixth place. So let's look forward to
- 30:17Speaker 1: watching all these teams in action. I mean, get down
- 30:19Speaker 1: and support your local cricket team as the season is
- 30:22Speaker 1: nearly over right now. Then last night I caught up
- 30:27Speaker 1: with Hannah Palmer when I popped down to the Three
- 30:29Speaker 1: Heels to watch a bit of netball. There was a
- 30:31Speaker 1: friendly game going on at the time and Hannah told
- 30:34Speaker 1: me that the wednsday your Winter league starts next week.
- 30:38Speaker 1: Winter league is one of the loveliest days of the
- 30:40Speaker 1: year and oh, I want to think about winter, do we.
- 30:44Speaker 1: It's a bit scary anyway, Hannah said she would do
- 30:47Speaker 1: her best to come on the show and tell us
- 30:48Speaker 1: all about it. Now, netball seems to be thriving since
- 30:52Speaker 1: the courts were refurbished. But did you notice netball wasn't
- 30:55Speaker 1: included in the Olympics and never has been. And I
- 30:58Speaker 1: find out amazing that's really annoyed netblele players for many,
- 31:02Speaker 1: many years. So I'm going to take a little and
- 31:04Speaker 1: have a little look closer on that. I wonder why
- 31:07Speaker 1: netble is not in the in the Olympics. Okay, So
- 31:11Speaker 1: I think we're gonna squeeze and try and get a
- 31:13Speaker 1: couple more songs in. And this is everybody's talking beautiful South.
- 31:24Speaker 1: Everybody's talk beautiful South. There. Everybody's talking a nice gentle song.
- 31:36Speaker 1: And do you know what, it's just get out and
- 31:40Speaker 1: make the most of this weather, because I think it's
- 31:42Speaker 1: going to change, isn't it. I'm mean, the school holidays
- 31:44Speaker 1: are closing up now, and it's just I don't know
- 31:49Speaker 1: what's going wrong with the weather in this country. Do
- 31:50Speaker 1: you remember earlier on in the year it was like
- 31:52Speaker 1: thirty degrees all over Turkey and Spain and and we
- 31:56Speaker 1: were still getting soaking wet and say fair does it right? Okay,
- 32:02Speaker 1: Well now, well I think it's about it from me.
- 32:07Speaker 1: I've got a quiet weekend this weekend, but I'm sure
- 32:09Speaker 1: i'll find some exporty to watch. On the following Sunday,
- 32:13Speaker 1: I shall be on the mic down in Rye for
- 32:15Speaker 1: the fifteen and thirty k trail run. That's either a
- 32:18Speaker 1: nine or eighteen mile run, so I'll be right on
- 32:22Speaker 1: the mic during the runners. In this last year the
- 32:25Speaker 1: weather was absolutely scorching. It was about thirty degrees, so
- 32:29Speaker 1: you really did feel for the runners when they came in.
- 32:31Speaker 1: And at the Star is great. It's in the Rye
- 32:34Speaker 1: High Street, you know, and it's tiny. The streets are
- 32:37Speaker 1: really narrow and there's like hundreds of runners packed down
- 32:40Speaker 1: the link for the street. And what they do they've
- 32:42Speaker 1: got the town cryer comes out. Yeah, the town crier
- 32:46Speaker 1: comes out and there's a balcony just above the start
- 32:49Speaker 1: line and he does this oh you all yeah stuff
- 32:53Speaker 1: and they love him. He comes down will he's down
- 32:56Speaker 1: before and people just you know, queuing up to have
- 32:58Speaker 1: pictures done with him. It really is a lovely, lovely day.
- 33:03Speaker 1: So anyway, the weather looks good for the weekend, so
- 33:06Speaker 1: don't stay indoors. Get outside, do something, even if it's
- 33:09Speaker 1: just go for a walk along the beach. Make the
- 33:11Speaker 1: most of it. I'm sure it's going to be changed.
- 33:13Speaker 1: This is England. I'll catch you again on Saturday. Tune
- 33:16Speaker 1: in between ten and eleven for the eighty Duks Saturday
- 33:19Speaker 1: Sports Show and I'll try and bring you that hooky news.
- 33:22Speaker 1: In the meantime, we're going to finish off and I
- 33:24Speaker 1: think this is a lovely song to finish off because
- 33:26Speaker 1: it's been If you like a perfect day, just a
- 33:41Speaker 1: perfect day.
