- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:18Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:20For those who watch the podcast, I am wearing my comfort sweater
- 0:25again. This is like the sweater that I
- 0:26wear when I feel like I just need to be like cozy and warm
- 0:30and protected. And so I am in this sweater
- 0:33again. You guys are going to be like,
- 0:34you wear that sweater so much. But that's why, OK.
- 0:37I had the biggest day ever possibly of my career yesterday.
- 0:41I know you guys know that because I've been talking about
- 0:45it for the days leading up, but I need to give you guys a big
- 0:49debrief, a big recap. So I was on two panels at South
- 0:55by Southwest Sydney, and then I interviewed Heather and Whitney
- 0:58from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.
- 1:01In between, I had a founder lunch and then at the end of the
- 1:04day, my brother and I went to the Smile 2 Australian premiere.
- 1:07So it was literally like the biggest day ever, but it was
- 1:11honestly my dream day in the sense that like, I've been
- 1:15thinking about everything that I did yesterday from like when I
- 1:17woke up, my makeup artist came over, we did a full glam to
- 1:21like, you know, when I went to sleep.
- 1:22And I'm like, all of those things are things that I would
- 1:25have dreamt about years ago, especially doing for myself, for
- 1:29my own business. And I'm like building on my own.
- 1:33That is so freaking cool that I got to do not only just like,
- 1:37you know, one or two of those things, but like all of these
- 1:40things all at once. Like starting my day with glam.
- 1:42Nothing makes me happy. Or you guys know, I'm like a
- 1:45glam girl. Like I'm like a hair, nails,
- 1:48makeup girl that like makes me happy.
- 1:50I am such a beauty girl. So like having my glam first
- 1:53thing doing these two professional panels, you know,
- 1:56having this like networking lunch with other female
- 1:59founders, doing obviously the interview of my dream with bad
- 2:04weather from Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, I and then going
- 2:08to a movie premiere. Like it was honestly chaos and I
- 2:11was so exhausted and I'm still so exhausted, but it was
- 2:13literally like my dream day. And I just can't believe that I
- 2:15got to live something like that. It was amazing and I'm so
- 2:18grateful for all the opportunities.
- 2:20So many of them came in really last minute things that I just
- 2:23like did not expect. But yes, the panels went well.
- 2:26You know, that's kind of boring. They went well.
- 2:29I feel like I articulated what I wanted to say well.
- 2:32It was really exciting to be on the mainstage for the panel.
- 2:34So they have like the auditorium, which is where the
- 2:36keynotes are. I don't know if they're doing
- 2:38panels in the auditorium or if it's just keynote speeches and
- 2:41like performances. But yes, so we were on the
- 2:44mainstage of like panels, which was really cool.
- 2:46And you know, that all went well.
- 2:47Like, it went well. I was way less nervous than I
- 2:50thought I would be. Normally when I do panels or
- 2:53public speaking things for the business, I feel a lot of
- 2:56pressure to articulate myself well and sound, you know,
- 3:00impressive and smart because I think we're very small.
- 3:03We're, you know, kind of this new indie media brand in
- 3:06Australia. I mean, we're not that new
- 3:07anymore, but like not super well known.
- 3:10We didn't have these moments that really blew us up in the
- 3:13same way that other independent media or like new age media,
- 3:17some of the brands have had here.
- 3:19So, you know, we're still relatively unknown.
- 3:22And I always really want to impress, you know, of course,
- 3:25like I want to be able to show up and like really articulate,
- 3:28like our message, our mission and show people like This is why
- 3:33we're important and why you should work with us at the end
- 3:35of the day. So I think so.
- 3:39Normally when I do panels or public speaking for the
- 3:41business, I am super, super nervous.
- 3:45Even if the stakes feel very low, I still feel all that
- 3:49pressure because it's like I am the brand, you know?
- 3:52I'm the face of the brand. And I really hate usually
- 3:54holding mics rather than just having them clip to me because
- 3:57my hand will be shaking. Like I'll be so nervous.
- 4:00But both panels that I did yesterday, I literally didn't
- 4:04shake it all. I was holding mics the whole
- 4:06time. I didn't shake it all.
- 4:07I did not feel nervous like I normally do.
- 4:10I actually felt quite comfortable.
- 4:12And I think that's partly because we got to know each
- 4:14other. The panelists and I, we got to
- 4:15know each other a little bit for probably like an hour before and
- 4:19like we were really like actually getting to know each
- 4:21other and like chatting and I felt very, you know, safe around
- 4:25them. I felt like all of us would be
- 4:27able to kind of save each other if things were going awry.
- 4:31And I've been on panels where I didn't really feel like that.
- 4:33So yes, I was really proud of myself because I felt like a
- 4:37level up. Like this was the biggest kind
- 4:39of brand name panel I've ever done, like South by Southwest.
- 4:42But the fact that I wasn't nervous for either of them was
- 4:45like a big win. OK, I need to tell you about the
- 4:48Real Housewives of Salt Lake City interview.
- 4:50So it was you guys the best, I think the best celebrity
- 4:56interview I've ever done, maybe just the best interview I've
- 4:58ever done. Like full stop in the sense of
- 5:01like the energy, the chaos. It was like bit after bit after
- 5:06bit like they were just on. Like it was a performance.
- 5:11It was a show. They love the camera in the best
- 5:15way. They were so entertaining and
- 5:18they were just so like happy. I don't know.
- 5:22They just had this lightness about them where they were like
- 5:25so excited to be doing a full day of press that I'm sure is so
- 5:30incredibly exhausting. But you would not know it.
- 5:33Like we were at the end of the day, our interview was at 4:45
- 5:36and it was like 9:00 AM in the morning.
- 5:38Like they just had their first coffee.
- 5:40They were so infectious and they were so sweet, you guys.
- 5:42Like they were the nicest, nicest people.
- 5:46And they were so nice to Alex and Annabelle.
- 5:49I brought Alex and Annabelle to like help me yesterday for the
- 5:52whole day. And yeah, it was just like, it
- 5:56was just, they were just magical.
- 5:58Like it was actually amazing. It was an insane interview.
- 6:01I have no, I feel like I blacked out and I was laughing so hard
- 6:04and I just I have no idea what happened.
- 6:07So when I go to edit the footage to publish next week for you
- 6:10guys, I have no idea what's going to come out.
- 6:12It wasn't very long. It was like 15 minutes, I think,
- 6:14and I'm going to have to cut some stuff.
- 6:15So I'm not it'll be a good like mini episode, right?
- 6:18It'll be good like mini scroll vibes.
- 6:20And they kept telling me that I need to be on Real Housewives of
- 6:23Sydney because I was like all dressed up.
- 6:24I got dressed by Shawna Joy, which is an Australian brand
- 6:27hair because it was just like a big day, right?
- 6:29It was a big like talent press day.
- 6:31So they dressed me. Obviously I had my full glam.
- 6:33So I was like matching their energy.
- 6:35And you know, of course, normally, like reporters just
- 6:37don't go to interviews, maybe unless it's like on the red
- 6:40carpet or something that glam that dressed up.
- 6:43So they just were like obsessed with the fact that I was like
- 6:46matching their energy. They were like, you guys are so
- 6:49prepared. You have all this real
- 6:50equipment. Like everyone else has just been
- 6:52in here with like, Vox pops. And we had like, you know, the
- 6:54full camera set up so that we could film it for the pod.
- 6:57And it was just like, really good.
- 6:59But yeah, they kept being like, you need to be on The Real
- 7:01Housewives of Sydney. Like you're so pretty, you're so
- 7:04glam. Why are you not on The Real
- 7:06Housewives of Sydney? Like Andy Cohen would love you.
- 7:09I was like actually interviewed Andy Cohen once on the red
- 7:11carpet and they were like, Oh my God.
- 7:12And he loved you. And I was like, well, it was
- 7:14like 5 seconds long, so I don't really know about that, but
- 7:19yeah, it was just so sweet. And like, I don't know, they
- 7:22were just so warm. They're exactly what you would
- 7:25expect. And it was real.
- 7:26I mean, actually, you know what I was, I was going to keep
- 7:27going. But a lot of what I've just told
- 7:29you we talked about in the interview, so I'm going to save
- 7:31it. But yeah, the vibes were
- 7:32amazing. They were so sweet to the girls.
- 7:34Like I said, they were like complimenting them.
- 7:37They gave them both big hugs. We were taking pictures at the
- 7:39end. And then they were like Alex
- 7:40Annabelle, like, come in the photos.
- 7:41Like it was just the best, the best.
- 7:46So I cannot wait for you guys to hear the interview.
- 7:50I hope it turned out well because like I said, I kind of
- 7:52blacked out. OK, let's just get into the
- 7:56stories for today. So the first story that I have
- 8:00for you guys is that Sherri Frankie has spoken out on the
- 8:03Lifetime movie about her mother Ruby Frankie and her arrest.
- 8:08So there is a new Lifetime movie that's about to be released
- 8:11about Ruby Frankie and her business partner Jodi
- 8:13Hildebrand. The film is called Mormon Mom
- 8:16Gone Wrong, The Ruby Frankie Story and will tell the story of
- 8:20the 8 Passengers YouTube channel and how Ruby got involved with
- 8:23her former business partner Jodi Hildebrand.
- 8:25Quickest recap ever. Both Ruby and Jodi were
- 8:28sentenced to up to 30 years for child abuse against Ruby's
- 8:32younger children back in February.
- 8:34Heather Locklear is actually starring as Jodi, which is kind
- 8:39of crazy. And I just wanted to say before
- 8:41I kind of get into Sherry's response, like it is really wild
- 8:44how quickly these networks are releasing these films about like
- 8:47big pop culture moments. We've seen this now several
- 8:50times with the Bravo universe where, you know, like the
- 8:53housewife and the hustler, like Jen Shaw's, whatever one that
- 8:57was. I forget what that one was
- 8:58about. But all of these kind of like
- 9:00true crime situations with reality TV, Randall Emmett from
- 9:04Vanderpump Rules and Lala, like they these things are happening.
- 9:08And then I think it's because the streamers can just like, you
- 9:11know, create and release things so much quicker than we could
- 9:14have years ago. But it's really, I think it's a
- 9:17little bit like insensitive to be capitalizing on this so
- 9:21quickly. And I and that's why they're
- 9:22doing it obviously, like releasing something so quickly
- 9:24like this is because they know that people will watch it
- 9:26because they're interested in the story right now.
- 9:29Whereas previously, sure, there might have been a documentary or
- 9:32like a movie made about Jodi Hildebrandt and Ruby and eight
- 9:36passengers and everything that happened, but it would be in
- 9:38like 10 years. You know, this feels icky.
- 9:42Like it's literally just this. It's the same year.
- 9:44It's the same year that they were sentenced.
- 9:46So Sherry, who is the daughter, the eldest daughter of Ruby.
- 9:49So Sherry's been very vocal about what happened with her
- 9:53parents and her mother. And Jodi, you know, she was
- 9:56posting on her stories when she got arrested saying, like,
- 9:58finally, my mom is facing some consequences about what she's
- 10:02been doing to my younger siblings.
- 10:03Like, unfortunately, unfortunately, Sherri has, you
- 10:05know, she's the eldest. It seems like she's taken it
- 10:08upon herself to be an advocate for her younger siblings, which
- 10:13is like, so sweet, but, you know, also so unfortunate as a
- 10:17child of her parents herself. So as soon as a trailer for the
- 10:21show came out a few days ago, Sherri wrote on Instagram
- 10:24Stories a note about the Lifetime movie coming out about
- 10:27my family. I saw the trailer suddenly in
- 10:29class and had an anxiety attack. None of us were contacted about
- 10:33the movie. None of the proceeds are going
- 10:35to the kids. This movie is trash and only
- 10:37hurts my siblings more. Please do not support this
- 10:40movie. She followed up saying here's my
- 10:42daily reminder. The Lifetime movie cannot air.
- 10:45Please help me and help me make sure this movie doesn't get
- 10:48watched or supported or released.
- 10:50I will keep pressing this issue. Thank you for standing with me.
- 10:53We were not consulted. We are not getting a dime from
- 10:56this movie. This is deeply traumatic for me
- 10:58to witness and she's actually been posting every single day
- 11:03since on her stories with like. Just a daily reminder, don't
- 11:06support this movie. Daily reminder do not watch this
- 11:09movie. So she also commented on the
- 11:12official trailer she wrote. This is shameful.
- 11:15This movie should not be supported, let alone released.
- 11:19I just, I feel so bad for this family.
- 11:21I feel so bad for these children.
- 11:23Like they've been through so much in the last 12 months and
- 11:26now to have this like dramatization of their
- 11:30experience starring Heather Locklear is just insane.
- 11:36And I do worry that, you know, from what we know about Jodi, it
- 11:40seems like she would probably love to know that there's a
- 11:43movie being made and Heather Locklear is starring as her, you
- 11:48know, like, this is actually probably her dream.
- 11:51She probably loves knowing that she is like, famous now.
- 11:54So this is just, like, really upsetting.
- 11:56And I will absolutely not be watching this.
- 11:59You know, Sherry saying please don't watch it.
- 12:01Absolutely will respect that. So I'm not going to, you know,
- 12:04like, report on the movie or anything because I'm not going
- 12:06to watch it. And I'm hoping that there is
- 12:09going to be a way that this kind of backlash will result in, I
- 12:14don't know, something tangible. But like, I don't think it will,
- 12:16like, I don't think that, you know, Lifetime is going to,
- 12:19like, pull the movie or anything.
- 12:20I just don't think that's what is going to happen,
- 12:23unfortunately. But I think Sherri is going to
- 12:25keep trying. OK.
- 12:26The next story that I have for you guys is a very tragic one.
- 12:30Liam Payne has reportedly passed away at the age of 31.
- 12:36So Liam Payne of One Direction fame has reportedly died after
- 12:40falling from a third floor balcony at a hotel in Buenos
- 12:43Aires. This news just came out a few
- 12:45hours ago. So there's like, not a lot of
- 12:47information yet. But according to TMZ, quote,
- 12:50witnesses say this happened shortly after 5:00 PM in Buenos
- 12:53Aires and that Liam had been acting erratic in the hotel
- 12:56lobby. Earlier, he had smashed his
- 12:58laptop and had to be carried back to his room.
- 13:01And then, The Sydney Morning Herald wrote, police were called
- 13:03to the hotel in the capital's leafy Palermo neighborhood,
- 13:06responding to an emergency that cited, quote, an aggressive man
- 13:10who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol.
- 13:12This is so sad and scary and tragic.
- 13:16And we've been talking about Liam so much on the podcast, so
- 13:20it kind of feels surreal, you know?
- 13:22And his ex-girlfriend, I think it was last week or the week
- 13:26before, made that big tick tock video about him and that kind of
- 13:30brought his name back up in like all these past interviews and
- 13:33things that he'd done, like it all.
- 13:35It brought it all back to light, and a lot of people were talking
- 13:39about him, and this is just really sad and scary.
- 13:43And like I said, we don't really have any other information.
- 13:45And at this time, the One Direction and at the time of
- 13:50recording this, I haven't seen anyone Direction bandmates say
- 13:53anything. I imagine they will, and I
- 13:56imagine maybe there'll be some type of tribute or something
- 13:58that they do for Liam. But yeah, this is just so sad.
- 14:02All right, I wanted to leave you guys on a happier note.
- 14:05So I think this, I guess happy, I guess it depends on how you
- 14:10look at it actually. But I wanted to talk to you guys
- 14:13about the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show because it came
- 14:16back last night for the first time after a six year hiatus.
- 14:20And I watched it and there is a lot of discussion about it.
- 14:24But yes, the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show made its return
- 14:27after a six year hiatus last night.
- 14:29So in 2019, the show was cancelled quote amid lagging
- 14:33brand sales, declining viewership and a sea of
- 14:35criticisms and controversy largely directed at its lack of
- 14:38diversity and inclusivity rights news.com dot AU.
- 14:41So the brand has spent the last six years, I guess, trying to
- 14:45kind of rehab its image a little bit more and they decided
- 14:50they've done enough. So they're ready to bring the
- 14:54fashion show back. And things that I thought were
- 14:56really cool. Taffy Co hosted the pre show
- 14:59event with Olivia Culpo. I thought it was so cool to see
- 15:01Taffy a tik toker, just fucking slang.
- 15:05I've actually interviewed Taffy. She was an amazing celebrity
- 15:08interview too, because she was also so chaotic and just said
- 15:11like whatever she wanted. And then she got her mop.
- 15:13So we're on Zoom, and then she got her mom on Zoom and I was
- 15:17like, talking to her mom with her.
- 15:19That was actually crazy. That was really funny.
- 15:22So yeah, love taffy. She slayed as always.
- 15:25Lisa from Blackpink performed multiple times.
- 15:28She opened the show with a performance.
- 15:30Tyla performed. Lisa and Tyla, like, slayed.
- 15:33Like, they just did so well. Like, Oh my God.
- 15:35I think they chose such good musical acts, like such relevant
- 15:40young, fresh musical acts. It was just such a good call.
- 15:43There were so many icons. Gigi Hadid, Kate Moss, Barbara
- 15:47Palvin, Adriana Lima, Behati Prinsloo, Candace Swinople, Tyra
- 15:52Paloma, El Sessa, Bella Hadid, Ashley Graham Share Cher
- 15:58performed. That was insane.
- 16:00It was just like so * studded. And in my opinion, it was not
- 16:03that diverse. Like I think they could have
- 16:05done so much better than what they did.
- 16:08I I mean, I guess it was more diverse than their previous
- 16:11shows, but it was not. I would not watch that fashion
- 16:14show not knowing it was Victoria's Secret and think, oh,
- 16:17that was like a representative show, like absolutely not.
- 16:21So it has been copying some criticism because of that.
- 16:24And I was watching it and thinking like, wow, I do
- 16:27understand why this show was so popular for so many years.
- 16:31It's not that I never watched it like I definitely did.
- 16:33But when I was younger, my self esteem was much lower than it is
- 16:36now. And I think that's normal.
- 16:37You know, I think you kind of grow up and grow into yourself
- 16:40and accept yourself. And back then when it was really
- 16:43popular, when I was in high school and at university, like I
- 16:46could barely watch it because it just made me feel so bad about
- 16:49myself. So I watched it in, in full.
- 16:52And it is like, I mean, it's like going to like a concert or
- 16:56something, right? And it's so fun and like the
- 17:00audience is like screaming and having the best time and all the
- 17:03models are having the best time. And I feel like it's one of the
- 17:06opportunities, like one of the best opportunities for models to
- 17:09really feel like rock stars, you know?
- 17:12So I totally see why they love it because they don't just have
- 17:15to walk down at some like really chic fashion show and be like
- 17:18really serious and really poised.
- 17:21Like they can just have like a good time.
- 17:24There's like crazy musical performances.
- 17:26Like they must feel like they are rock stars when they're
- 17:29doing that show. And that would just be so much
- 17:31fun. And I would like had chills
- 17:33watching the show. And I was like, I know that this
- 17:35is like still kind of problematic, but like, I'm also
- 17:38loving this. So yeah, I I enjoyed it, but I
- 17:42still would not suggest anyone watch it if you have issues with
- 17:49like body image comparison, self esteem, because it was not
- 17:54diverse enough, like just full stop, you know, but they really
- 17:57pulled out like all the stops for this and I thought it was a
- 18:01very entertaining a couple of hours.
- 18:03Anyways, guys, that's it for mini scroll today.
