- 0:01Hey, y'all, welcome to today's show. This one will finally wrap up
- 0:05our series on the authority of the Church, the teaching and governing authority of
- 0:14the Church. It's a seven part series. I never thought it would go
- 0:19that long, but it's a lot to unpack. And I was also asked
- 0:24to write the gospel reflection from Mizzio Day today. And you know, I
- 0:29said, there's no such thing as coincidence. Well wouldn't you just know?
- 0:32Today's gospel reading was when Jesus said, Father, I wish they'd be one
- 0:37as you would I are one. He wanted, he said, he wanted
- 0:40to be there to be all of one mind, all of one spirit,
- 0:45in complete perfect unity and agreement. In other words, no room for schism,
- 0:50no room for somebody to up and leave the church. He founded the
- 0:54Catholic Church and form another church, no room for differing doctrines. And if
- 1:00you're interested in that, it's on Missio Day's substack page. Just look up
- 1:06missy O Day that's m I. S. S Io d E I.
- 1:10And you know, sign up the gosport of fractions the Free and it's really
- 1:15very good, very good, great group of people, great group of writers.
- 1:19Really really good folks, really honored to be even asked to join.
- 1:23Really um all right, So you know who would sum it up better than
- 1:32Father sparago As I said, his book The Exhaustive Explanation of the Catechism,
- 1:40written published I believe in eighteen nineties. So you know, this is the
- 1:42old Boston Catechism. This is you know, pure orthodoxy, and it's wonderfully
- 1:51written, very concise, even though it's a very long book, it's well
- 1:53over seven hundred pages, but really interesting. You know. He really in
- 2:00one section talks about communism and socialism and why they're incompatible with Catholicism. I
- 2:07wish more of our priests ambishops realized that socialism was incompatible with Catholicism. At
- 2:14its core, the socialism, communism, Nazism, etc. Are all this
- 2:21basically the same thing in differing degrees, and they're based on ind They're based
- 2:28on someone saying I have a right to what another person work to earn,
- 2:34or giving the government authority to say you have the right to what these people
- 2:38over here worked and earned. It's one thing. If you want to give
- 2:42it, that's charity. That's not the government mandating theft taking from someone without
- 2:50their consent and giving it someone who hasn't worked for it. That's basically as
- 2:55simple as you get. But I mean it goes a whole lot deeper than
- 2:59that. I mean, do you take my home state in North Carolina,
- 3:02for instance. For a long time, North Carolina was a state that didn't
- 3:07not allow the cell of alcohol. For a long time, North Carolina was
- 3:10a state that did not have a lottery and outlawed or gambling. You know,
- 3:14but it's right or wrong. I mean, I don't have a problem
- 3:15with drinking or gambling so long as it's not a vice, so long as
- 3:19someone isn't addicted to it so someone doesn't act stupidly and irresponsibly. But that
- 3:23was the law here in North Carolina. Well, now North Carolina runs the
- 3:30Alcoholic Beverage System, the ABC stores, the liquor stores, the state sells
- 3:35the liquor and profits off of it. Now we have a state run lottery
- 3:38and they're getting ready to legalize gambling, and so how does one balance that
- 3:44out? The government said it's right, so therefore it's right. I mean,
- 3:49before you know, North Carolina was a strongly Protestant state, and they
- 3:52said, we believe it's wrong because our religious doctrine says it was wrong.
- 3:57And now everyone has to change because government says it's right. I mean,
- 4:01yeah, like I said, I don't have I absolutely enjoy a glass of
- 4:06bourbon in an evening or whine with a meal. I'm not a gambler.
- 4:12That's not my thing, but I don't have a problem with it. But
- 4:16the thing is, most of the state did. And when the government said
- 4:21no, it's no longer wrong, it's right because the government could profit on
- 4:26it. That really everyone had to just accept that. And what I mean,
- 4:32when did the government decide? When did we decide that government has the
- 4:35right to dictate morality? Well, that's also really the heart of socialism and
- 4:42communism, fascism, Nazism, which, as I said, are really all
- 4:46one and the same thing at their core. I mean, people say,
- 4:49well, you can't say Nazis are the same as socialist what actually it is.
- 4:54It was the National Socialist Workers Party, The Nazis were National Socialist.
- 5:00You can't say fascism is as bad as communism, socialism is as bad as
- 5:03fascism. Yeah, Actually, Mussolini's fascism was a socialist system, and our
- 5:10government now is a fascist socialist system. The government for instance, well,
- 5:17corporations pay the government for them to enact regulations that usually are not set by
- 5:25Congress at all. I mean, it's not our elected representatives doing this for
- 5:28the most part, it's bureaucracies. They set regulations, they come up with
- 5:31mandates. You remember when you're being forced to be vaccinated a few years ago.
- 5:39The corporations made a lot of money on that. The drug companies have
- 5:43made a freaking fortune on that. Or Obamacare when they mandated everyone have health
- 5:48insurance see health insurance companies and the large corporations that own all the hospitals.
- 5:55Now they've done very well. So the pharmaceuticable companies. And that's just one
- 5:59instance. We can also get into the military industrial complex. Public education.
- 6:04I mean, when the government mandated that all kids had to go to school,
- 6:09and really Woodrow Wilson and FDR and LBJ were horribly anti Catholic and really
- 6:15instituted much of the modern public education system, specifically to put Catholic education out
- 6:23of business. Well, now we have teachers unions, and we have teachers
- 6:29actually making very good money. You know, Actually the average North Carolinian makes
- 6:34less than the average teacher in North Carolina. I mean, the teachers salaries
- 6:40here are starting out at like fifty thousand dollars a year and going up from
- 6:44there, and the average North Carolinian is making more like in the thirties and
- 6:47forties. I know, it's going to shock y'all that live in New England
- 6:50or California, where the cost of living is so high and wages are high
- 6:55as well. In North Carolina, most people make less than fifty dollars.
- 7:00Most teachers make more, and it seems like every year the state legislature votes
- 7:05to give them more money because they can't have the teachers unions against them or
- 7:10they'll lose their elections. That's a fascist system. That is corporation working with
- 7:16government to abuse the citizens, to take our tax dollars and to force us
- 7:21to buy their products. That's you know again. So anyway, I love
- 7:26fathers Paragua's book. No, I'll get into the subject. We'll see if
- 7:28we can wrap this up. And this should be a fairly short podcast because
- 7:31we covered so much. And it's a beautiful spring evening. It's breezy,
- 7:36and you know, I want to be out there enjoying it. And I
- 7:39hope you'll go listen to my podcast on the porch or on your balcony or
- 7:43on your deck or whatever. Put in, you know, some earbuds and
- 7:46take a walk. Just enjoy this gorgeous mayweather. Remember we're coming to the
- 7:50end of the month that's dedicated to our lady. Go, you know,
- 7:54pray rosary, enjoy being outside. Whether you listen to my podcasts or not,
- 7:57you know, anyway, Father Sparrago says the foundation and spread of the
- 8:03church that's heading to this chapter in his book, Christ compared the church to
- 8:07a grain of mustard seed, which is the small as the seeds, but
- 8:09grows into a tree in which the birds of the air build their nests.
- 8:13That confuses a lot of people. Okay, I'll give you the name of
- 8:18that tree at some point. If you've ever grown mustard, you know,
- 8:22mustard is a salad green essentially, and the seeds we used to make condiments.
- 8:26It doesn't grow into a tree. There was actually a tree that was
- 8:30known as a mustard tree. So it really does confuse a lot of people.
- 8:35But by any means, a mustard seed is pretty tiny. It's actually
- 8:39like a little speck you can put probably just between the tips of your forefinger
- 8:45and thumb. You could probably hold twenty or thirty mustard seeds. Well,
- 8:48I don't know, it depends on how big. Okay, wild mustard has
- 8:50a smaller seed than the mustard's actually cultivated for the seed to make mustard,
- 8:56but it's still not very big. You could at least hold a good well,
- 9:00depending on how big your fingers are, at least five to ten.
- 9:01Okay, just in the pinch between your fingers. It's like if you are
- 9:05a pran of radishes, same family. You know, you can just scatter
- 9:07those seeds. They're tiny, just little, tiny ball shaped seeds. They
- 9:13go everywhere. Christ laid the foundation of the church when in the course of
- 9:18his teaching he gathered a number of disciples and chose twelve of these to preside
- 9:22over the rest, and one to be the head of all. The church
- 9:26began its life on Pentecost, when some three thousand people were baptized. Pentecost
- 9:31is the birthday of the Church. After the miracle at the Gate of the
- 9:33Temple, some two thousand more were baptized. Soon after the set of the
- 9:39Holy Ghost. The apostles began to preach the gospel throughout the world in accordance
- 9:43with the commands of Christ, and founded Christian communities in many places. He
- 9:48cites Mark what is that Mark six fifteen for that Saint Paul, after his
- 9:52conversion thirty four ad labored more abundantly than all the Apostles, scoring Corinthians fifteen.
- 10:00He traversed Asia Minor, the greater part of southern Europe, and many
- 10:03islands in the Mediterranean. After him, Saint Peter labored most. After escaping
- 10:07by a miracle from prison in Jerusalem, he founded his sea at Rome,
- 10:13where, in company with Saint Paul, he suffered martyrdom. Saint John the
- 10:16Beloved Disciple lived at Ephesus with their blessed lady and governed the church in Asia
- 10:22Minor. His brother, Saint James the Greater, traveled as far as Spain
- 10:26and was beheaded in Jerusalem in forty four a d His body rests at Compostella.
- 10:31Saint James Celeste governed the church at Jerusalem and was cast down from a
- 10:35pinnacle of the temple In eighteen sixty three. Saint Andrew preached to the people
- 10:41living along the Lower Danube and died on a cross in Aka. Saint Thomas
- 10:46and Saint Bartholome who made their ways to the Euphrates and Tigress, and as
- 10:50far as India. Saint Simon evangelized Egypt and North Africa. It's an amazing
- 10:56most Sundayed martyrs, It's true estimate. Most of the church fathers that followed
- 11:03them. Polycarp Saint Justin Martyr. They I mean, you Protestants sometimes will
- 11:09make the charge. Well, of course they said that. You know,
- 11:11they had this authority. It benefited them. They could, you know,
- 11:15become rich being priests. Well, not only do they not become rich,
- 11:18they were tortured to death for their faith. The Apostles established their community after
- 11:24the following plan. Having converted and baptized a number of men in a place,
- 11:28they chose assistance to whom they imparted a greater or lesser portion of their
- 11:33own powers. And before leaving that place, they made the choice of a
- 11:37successor and gave him full powers. That's Acts four twenty two. Those who
- 11:43received only a small portion of the Apostolic power were called deacons and priests.
- 11:48Those who had ampler faculties, fuller, you know, bigger, more power.
- 11:52Go with that. The representative of the Apostles were called bishops. Christ
- 11:58gave the apostles power were to choose successors when he gave them the self same
- 12:01power which he had received from the Father. That's John twenty twenty one.
- 12:07And it was his wish that they should choose successors, for he told the
- 12:09apostles that their mission should continue to the end of the world. That Matthew
- 12:13twenty eight twenty. Among all the Christian communities, that of Rome took the
- 12:18highest rank because it was provided over by Saint Peter, the chief of the
- 12:22Apostles, and because to the head of that community, as successor to Saint
- 12:28Peter, the privacy of Saint Peter was transferred. Saint Ignatius, Bishop of
- 12:33Antioch one of seven A D. In a letter to the Christians of Rome,
- 12:37begs them not to set him free, and calls the Roman community the
- 12:41chief community of the holy band of the faithful, and Saint Irenaeus, Bishop
- 12:46of Leon. I guess it's Leon, yeah, speed a little different than
- 12:52I used to see it anyway. Two two a D. Said all the
- 12:58faithful over the whole world must conform to the Roman Church on account of its
- 13:03principality. All Christian communities which have been formed in the course of time,
- 13:09profess the same faith and acknowledged the same means of grace and the same head.
- 13:15Hence they formed one large community, the Catholic Church. When the Roman
- 13:18emperor Constantine the Great had permitted his subjects to become Christian and later made the
- 13:24Christian religion the state religion in three twenty four a d. The church indeed
- 13:28nourished externally, but fervor. The church indeed nourished externally, but fervor and
- 13:37religious discipline soon began to suffer. Constantine was led to this step by the
- 13:41appearance of a luminous cross in the heavens, and still more by his mother's
- 13:46saint Helena. The following with some of his ordinances, Sunday and feast days
- 13:50were to be observed with solemnity. The temples of the heathens will be handed
- 13:54over to the bishops. The gladiatorial combats and the crucifix of criminals were forbidden,
- 14:01and many churches were built. And that's a very succinct summation of how
- 14:07the Church came to be. Jesus gave his authority to the apostles and told
- 14:11him what to do. The apostles formed churches, throughout the known world at
- 14:16that time, authorized and gave their power to others to act as deacons,
- 14:22priests and bishops. And in the three hundreds Rome became Christian and it became
- 14:31the Holy Roman Empire, and Catholicism was spread throughout the world very much.
- 14:39A big, big reason for that, A big influence of that were the
- 14:41decrees of the Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne, who demanded that Christian communities be formed
- 14:48essentially monasteries and abbeys, and they be spread throughout the entire empire to operate
- 14:56free hospitals, as you know, as an herbalist sing to me, because
- 15:01that's where so much of our herbal medicine comes from. And the Capitulaire he
- 15:05wrote what herbs were to be grown, and the Benedictines especially took that mantle,
- 15:11that charge and went out and formed free hospitals, even into the pagan
- 15:16lands of you know then the Germanic tribes and Ireland and etc. France was
- 15:22a very wild place at the time. Just you know, they christianize Europe
- 15:28through herbal medicine and free education. They opened schools, and I don't think
- 15:35it's any coincidence. As I said, nothing happens by coincidence that the the
- 15:43socialists per so called progressives here in America. Their first steps under Wilson and
- 15:50FDR, and culminating with LBJ, were to try to destroy Christian education,
- 15:56to destroy Catholic schools by their laws about public education. They started large campaigns
- 16:06to denigrate Catholic education to get people into the public schools, bussing programs,
- 16:12lunch programs, mandates that said kids had to be in school, truancy officers,
- 16:21and other laws that made it tougher for Catholics to operate schools. And
- 16:26you know, before the end a lot of Protestant students went to Catholic schools.
- 16:33I can I know one community in South Carolina, particularly where the only
- 16:37school in the area was Catholic up until the advent of the public education.
- 16:41And with the spread. You got to remember Wilson, especially his and FDR,
- 16:51especially in the South, it was they had their own organizations. In
- 16:53the north, we can get into that another day. But in the South,
- 16:56the I would see the militant arm or the enforcing arm at the Democratic
- 17:02Party was the q klux Klan and they began huge campaigns against Catholics. The
- 17:07clan Lynch more Catholics than they did blacks in the South. That's something you're
- 17:14not gonna be taught in public schools because one of the main reasons they were
- 17:17persecuting Catholics and spreading anti Catholic hate was to get those Protestants out of Catholic
- 17:23schools and into public schools. And in that town wherefore decades the only school
- 17:30was a Catholic school with many, many Protestants students in it, and now
- 17:37the school, the Catholic school is closed, has been for decades. And
- 17:41I don't believe the congregation of the Catholic church in that town, which is
- 17:45actually a college town. I mean it's a it's not a smaller town really
- 17:49with a large industry. That, you know, is what brought the Catholics
- 17:52here in the first place. In that town. Looking at the church and
- 18:00I'm you know, I've been there a couple of times, and I've watched
- 18:03masses there online because I really like the priest. I don't think they have
- 18:08more than fifty parishioners. And when colleges in session, yeah they get a
- 18:14few college students. But I mean, actually people who live there and have
- 18:17kids that I mean, that's how successful beginning with Wilson destroying Catholic education was
- 18:25in America, and I mean in the South, probably more than New England
- 18:30because we just had fewer Catholics to start with. But yeah, I mean,
- 18:33what they did with the clan in the South, they did with the
- 18:37radical side of the labor movement in the North. And the first thing they
- 18:42went after was education and to extend Catholic hospitals. Look at how Obama tried
- 18:49to sue the little Sisters of the poor because they didn't want to comply with
- 18:55mandates for birth control. And who knows what else would have been now what
- 18:59gen reassignment surgeries and all that. The Catholic Church, you know, in
- 19:04large part was spread through the examples of the martyrs, the charity of Christians,
- 19:11free hospitals, and free education by the monks and nuns. And that's
- 19:15you know, that's been a target of the left. That's been a target
- 19:18of everyone from Karl Marx to Stalin Lennon Hitler Mau. Horrors that happened in
- 19:29China under mal you probably don't even want to know about. It's just horrible.
- 19:36I mean, hundreds of millions of people killed, and Cuba and you
- 19:41know, all the communist, socialist, fascist countries. The first things they
- 19:47start targeting are the Catholic institutions that you know, offer ecumenical care free to
- 19:52all or at a very small fee. I mean, Catholic education before the
- 20:00nineteen twenties was so inexpensive We're talking, I mean hardly anything. It was
- 20:04mainly supported by donations as it is now, and kids that couldn't afford it,
- 20:08you know, the month senior whomever was in charge, would find them
- 20:14a little job to do, you know, put some call on the furnace,
- 20:18take out the trash, and they know they paid for their education,
- 20:22whether they were Catholic or Protestant. So anyway, I guess I'm off on
- 20:26a tangent, but we have finally wrapped this up. So y'all, if
- 20:30you have any questions about the teaching and governing authority of the Catholic Church,
- 20:34please before you to get in touch. And my book Confirmation Autobike, we
- 20:40have auto Biography of Faith, is full of this information. And this past
- 20:48seven hours, I mean seven shows which are coming up to over five hours
- 20:52that I've done on this topic. Five hours that I've done on this topic
- 20:56all come from my book. So if you if you're looking for a good
- 21:00book that you can use to enrich and defend your faith when challenged, you
- 21:04know, consider mine. Yeah, they're better books on apologetics, but this
- 21:08book is really oriented around my experience of having to defend the doctrines of the
- 21:18Catholic Church, especially in the South, especially in the South. Really,
- 21:25so you anyway, have a great one. I'll talk to you tomorrow.
