Speaker 1: front of Medea's house in Corinth. A road to the
• 0:09
Speaker 1: right leads towards the royal castle, one on the left
• 0:12
Speaker 1: to the harbor. The nurse is discovered alone.
• 0:16
Speaker 2: Would God no argo Ere had winged the seas to
• 0:19
Speaker 2: Colchis through the blues plegidies, No shaft of riven pine
• 0:25
Speaker 2: and Pellian's glen shaped that first all blade in the
• 0:28
Speaker 2: hands of men valiant, who one to save King Pelias,
• 0:33
Speaker 2: vow the fleece all golden. Never then I trow mine
• 0:39
Speaker 2: own princess o spirit wounded sore with love of Jason
• 0:45
Speaker 2: to the incastled shore, had sailed of Oldiolcus, never wrought
• 0:50
Speaker 2: the daughters of King Pelias, knowing not to spill their
• 0:53
Speaker 2: father's life, nor fled in fear, hunted for that fierce
• 0:58
Speaker 2: sin to Corinth. Here with Jason and her babes, this
• 1:03
Speaker 2: folct needs tood friend to her, and she in word
• 1:06
Speaker 2: and deed served always Jason. Surely this doth bind through
• 1:12
Speaker 2: all ill days the hurts of humankind, when man and
• 1:16
Speaker 2: woman in one music move. But now the world is
• 1:21
Speaker 2: angry and true love sick as with poison. Jason doth
• 1:26
Speaker 2: forsake my mistress and his own two sons to make
• 1:29
Speaker 2: his couch in a king's chamber. He must wed wed
• 1:35
Speaker 2: with this creon's child, who now is head and chief
• 1:38
Speaker 2: of Corranths. Whereforeesaw betrayed. Medeia calleth up the oath they
• 1:44
Speaker 2: made they too, and wakes the clasped hands again. The
• 1:48
Speaker 2: truths are passing speech, and cries a mane on God
• 1:51
Speaker 2: in heaven to mark the end, and how Jason hath
• 1:55
Speaker 2: paid his debt. All fasting now and cold, her body
• 2:00
Speaker 2: yielded up to pain. Her day is a waste of
• 2:04
Speaker 2: weeping she has lain since first she knew that he
• 2:07
Speaker 2: was false. Her eyes are lifted not, and all her
• 2:12
Speaker 2: visage lies in the dust. If friends will speak, she
• 2:16
Speaker 2: hears no more than some dead rock or wave that
• 2:20
Speaker 2: beats the shore. Only the white throat, and a sudden
• 2:24
Speaker 2: shame may rise, and all alone she moans the name
• 2:29
Speaker 2: of father and land and home forsook that day for
• 2:36
Speaker 2: this man's sake, who casteth her away, not to be
• 2:41
Speaker 2: quite shut out from home. Alas she knoweth now, how
• 2:47
Speaker 2: rare a thing that was, methinks she has a dread
• 2:51
Speaker 2: not joy to see her children near. Tis this that
• 2:55
Speaker 2: maketh me most tremble lest she do.
• 2:58
Speaker 3: I know not what.
• 3:00
Speaker 2: Her heart is, no light thing, and usest not to
• 3:03
Speaker 2: brook much wrong. I know that woman, aye, and dread her.
• 3:08
Speaker 2: Will she creep alone to die bleeding? In that old
• 3:11
Speaker 2: room west ill is laid Lord Jason's bed. She hath
• 3:15
Speaker 2: for that a blade made keen or slay the bridegroom
• 3:20
Speaker 2: and the king, and wi herself. God knows what dire
• 3:23
Speaker 2: a thing tis a fell spirit? Few I ween shall
• 3:27
Speaker 2: stir her hate unscathed or lightly humple her a tis
• 3:32
Speaker 2: the children from their games again rested and gay, and
• 3:36
Speaker 2: all their mother's pain forgotten, young lives ever turned from gloom.
• 3:40
Speaker 1: The children and their attendant come in.
• 3:43
Speaker 4: Thou, ancient treasure of my lady's room. What makest thou
• 3:47
Speaker 4: here before the gates alone and always turning on thy lips?
• 3:50
Speaker 4: Some moan of all mischances? Will our mistress be content
• 3:55
Speaker 4: this long time to be left by thee.
• 3:58
Speaker 2: Gray guard of Jason's children. A good thrall hath his
• 4:02
Speaker 2: own grief, if any hurt before his master's Aye, it
• 4:05
Speaker 2: holds one's heart. Meseems I have strayed out so deep
• 4:11
Speaker 2: and evil dreams. I long to rest me here alone,
• 4:14
Speaker 2: and cry Midaia's wrongs to this still earth and sky.
• 4:18
Speaker 4: How are the tears yet running in her eyes?
• 4:22
Speaker 2: Tware good to be like thee. Her sorrow lies scarce wakened,
• 4:26
Speaker 2: yet not half its perils wrought mad spirit.
• 4:31
Speaker 4: If a man may speak his thought of masters mad,
• 4:34
Speaker 4: and nothing in her ears has sounded yet of her
• 4:37
Speaker 4: last cause for tears.
• 4:39
Speaker 1: He moves towards the house, but the nurse checks him.
• 4:42
Speaker 2: What cause, old man, nay grudge me? Not one word?
• 4:47
Speaker 4: Tis nothing? Best forget what thou hast heard.
• 4:50
Speaker 2: Nay, house, may by thy bed hold it not hid
• 4:53
Speaker 2: from me? I will keep silence.
• 4:55
Speaker 4: If thou bid I heard an old man talking? Were
• 4:59
Speaker 4: he at drafts in the sun beside the fountain gate,
• 5:04
Speaker 4: and never thought of me there standing still beside him?
• 5:09
Speaker 4: And he said, twas Creon's will, being lord of all
• 5:14
Speaker 4: this land, that she be sent and with her her
• 5:18
Speaker 4: two sons to banishment? Maybe tis all false? For myself,
• 5:25
Speaker 4: I know no further, and I would it were not so.
• 5:28
Speaker 2: Jason will never bear it. His own son's spanished, however
• 5:32
Speaker 2: hot his anger runs against their mother old.
• 5:35
Speaker 4: Love burneth low when new love wakes. Men say, he
• 5:39
Speaker 4: is not now husband, nor father here, nor any kin.
• 5:43
Speaker 2: But this is ruined, new waves breaking into wreck us.
• 5:47
Speaker 2: Ere we are righted from the old.
• 5:49
Speaker 4: Well, Hold thy peace, our mistress will be told all
• 5:53
Speaker 4: in good time. Speak thou no word hereof my babes?
• 5:58
Speaker 2: What think you of your father?
• 6:00
  Speaker 5: Love?
• 6:01
Speaker 2: God? Curse him not? He is my master still? But
• 6:06
Speaker 2: oh to them that loved him, 'tis an ill friend?
• 6:10
Speaker 4: And what man on earth is different? How hast thou
• 6:14
Speaker 4: lived all these years and learned? But now that every
• 6:17
Speaker 4: man more loveth his own head than other men's. He
• 6:21
Speaker 4: dreameth of the bed of this new bride, and thinks
• 6:25
Speaker 4: not of his son's.
• 6:27
Speaker 2: Go run into the house. My little ones all will
• 6:29
Speaker 2: end happily. Keep them apart, Let not their mother meet
• 6:33
Speaker 2: them while her heart is darkened. Yester night, I saw
• 6:37
Speaker 2: a flame stand in her eye, as though she hated them.
• 6:40
Speaker 2: And would I know not what? For sure? Her wrath
• 6:44
Speaker 2: will never turn nor slumber till she hath go. And
• 6:48
Speaker 2: if some must suffer, may it be not we who
• 6:51
Speaker 2: love her, but some enemy within?
• 6:55
Speaker 6: Oh shame and pain, Ho woe is me? Would I
• 6:59
Speaker 6: could die in my misery.
• 7:01
Speaker 1: The children and the attendant go in Ah, children hark,
• 7:06
Speaker 1: She moves again, her frozen heart, her sleeping wrath, in
• 7:11
Speaker 1: quick and never cross her path, nor rouse that dark
• 7:14
Speaker 1: eye in its pain, that fell sea spirit, and the
• 7:18
Speaker 1: dire spring of a will untaught, unbowed quick.
• 7:22
Speaker 2: Now methinks this weeping cloud has in its heart some
• 7:25
Speaker 2: thunder fire, slow gatherings that must flashy along. I know
• 7:30
Speaker 2: not how for ill or well it turns, this uncontrollable,
• 7:34
Speaker 2: tempestuous spirit, blind with wrong within?
• 7:39
Speaker 6: Have I not suffered? Doth it call? No tears? Huh?
• 7:45
Speaker 6: Ye beside the wall, unfathered children, God hate you as
• 7:52
Speaker 6: I am hated, and him too, that gat you and
• 7:56
Speaker 6: this house and all for pity?
• 7:58
Speaker 2: What have they to do? Abes with their father's sin?
• 8:02
Speaker 2: Why call thy curse on these.
• 8:05
  Speaker 3: Children?
• 8:05
Speaker 2: All these days? My bosom bleeds for you, rude. Are
• 8:09
Speaker 2: the wills of princes yea prevailing, always seldom crossed on
• 8:15
Speaker 2: fitful winds, their moods are tossed. Tis best men tread
• 8:19
Speaker 2: the equal way. I not with glory, but with peace.
• 8:24
Speaker 2: May the long summers find me crowned for gentleness. Her
• 8:29
Speaker 2: very sound is magic, and her usages all wholesome. But
• 8:35
Speaker 2: the fiercely great has little music on his road, and
• 8:38
Speaker 2: falls when the hand of God shall move, most deep
• 8:43
  Speaker 2: and desolate.
• 8:45
Speaker 1: During the last words, the leader of the chorus has entered.
• 8:48
Speaker 1: Other women follow her.
• 8:50
  Speaker 7: I heard a voice and a moan, a voice of
• 8:53
Speaker 7: the eastern seas. Hath she found not yet her ease? Speak, Oh,
• 8:59
Speaker 7: aged one? For I stood afar at the gate, and
• 9:03
Speaker 7: there came from within a cry and wailing desolate. Ah,
• 9:08
Speaker 7: no more joy have I, for the griefs this house
• 9:12
Speaker 7: doth see, and the love it hath wrought in me.
• 9:16
Speaker 2: There is no house tis gone. The lord seeketh a
• 9:21
Speaker 2: proud of bed, and she wastes in her chamber, And
• 9:25
Speaker 2: not one word will hear of care or charity within.
• 9:29
Speaker 6: Oh Zeus, oh Earth, O light. Will the fire not
• 9:35
Speaker 6: stab my brain? What propheteth living?
• 9:41
  Speaker 8: Oh?
• 9:41
Speaker 6: Shall I not lift the slow yoke and let the
• 9:45
Speaker 6: life go? Has a beast out in the night to
• 9:49
Speaker 6: lie and be rid of pain?
• 9:52
Speaker 9: Oh Zeus, oh Earth, O light.
• 9:56
Speaker 8: The cry abroad long heard, ye waist delight? Why weariest
• 10:03
Speaker 8: thou this day? Wild heart? For the bed abhorred, the
• 10:08
Speaker 8: cold bed in the clay, death cometh though no man
• 10:11
Speaker 8: pray ungarlanded, unadored, Call him not thou.
• 10:17
Speaker 10: If another's arms be thou, where thine have been on
• 10:21
Speaker 10: his head, be the sin rend, not thy brow.
• 10:25
Speaker 9: All that thou sufferest. God seeth O not so sore waste,
• 10:31
Speaker 9: nor weep for the breast that was thine of your.
• 10:35
Speaker 6: Or then, virgin of righteousness, virgin of hallowed troth ye
• 10:42
Speaker 6: mark'd me when with an oath I bound him, Mark
• 10:46
Speaker 6: no less that oath's end. Give me to see him
• 10:51
Speaker 6: and his bride, who sought my grief when I wronged her,
• 10:55
Speaker 6: not broken in misery, and all her house, Oh God,
• 11:03
Speaker 6: my mother's home, had the dim sure that I left
• 11:07
Speaker 6: for him, and the voice of my brother's blood.
• 11:12
Speaker 2: Oh wild words, did ye hear cry to them that
• 11:17
Speaker 2: god Man's face for sworn zmeis and zeus this rothnew
• 11:21
Speaker 2: born shall make mad workings? Ere it die?
• 11:25
Speaker 7: Would she but come to seek our faces that love
• 11:28
Speaker 7: her well, and take to her heart the spell of
• 11:32
  Speaker 7: words that.
• 11:32
Speaker 8: Speak alas for the heavy hate and anger that burneth?
• 11:37
  Speaker 11: Ever?
• 11:38
Speaker 8: Would it but now abate Ah, God, I love her yet,
• 11:43
Speaker 8: and surely my love's endeavor shall fail.
• 11:46
Speaker 10: Not hear go from that chamber, drear forth to the day,
• 11:52
Speaker 10: lead her and say, oh, say that we love her.
• 11:56
Speaker 9: Dear, go lest her hand be hard on the inner scent. Ah,
• 12:02
Speaker 9: let be for her grief moves hither word like an
• 12:06
  Speaker 9: angry sea.
• 12:08
Speaker 2: That will I though what words of mine or love
• 12:11
Speaker 2: shall move her? Let them lie with the old lost labors.
• 12:17
Speaker 2: Yet her eye know ye the eyes of the wild kind,
• 12:22
Speaker 2: the lion flash that gods their brute. So look she now,
• 12:27
Speaker 2: if any thrall speak comfort, or draw near it, all
• 12:31
Speaker 2: my mistress. In her evil mood.
• 12:34
Speaker 1: The nurse goes into the house.
• 12:36
Speaker 8: Alas the bold, blithe bards of old, that all for joy,
• 12:41
Speaker 8: their music, made for feasts and dancing manifold, that life
• 12:47
Speaker 8: might listen and be glad. But all the darkness and
• 12:51
Speaker 8: the wrong quick deaths, and dim, heart aching things would
• 12:56
Speaker 8: no man ease them with a song or music of
• 12:59
Speaker 8: a thing strings. Then song has served us in our need?
• 13:05
Speaker 8: What profit o'er the banquet's swell, that lingering cry that
• 13:10
Speaker 8: none may heed? The feast hath filled them all is well?
• 13:16
Speaker 9: I heard a song, but it comes no more. Where
• 13:19
Speaker 9: the tears ran over A keen cry, but tired, tired,
• 13:26
  Speaker 9: a woman's cry for her heart's desired for a traitor's
• 13:31
Speaker 9: kiss and a lost lover.
• 13:33
Speaker 10: But a prayer, methinks, yet riseth sore to God, to faith,
• 13:39
Speaker 10: God's ancient daughter, the faith that oversundering sees drew her
• 13:44
Speaker 10: to hellas and the breeze of midnight shivered, and the
• 13:48
Speaker 10: door closed of the salt unsounded water.
• 13:52
Speaker 1: During the last words, madare has come out from the.
• 13:54
Speaker 6: House women of Corinth. I am come to show my face.
• 14:00
Speaker 6: Lest ye despise me, For I know some head stand
• 14:05
Speaker 6: high and fail not even at night alone, far less
• 14:10
Speaker 6: like this in all men's sight. And we who study
• 14:15
Speaker 6: not our wayfarings but feel and cry. Oh, we are
• 14:20
Speaker 6: drifting things and evil. For what truth is in men's
• 14:26
Speaker 6: eyes which search no heart, but in a flash despise
• 14:29
Speaker 6: a strange face shuddering back from one that ne'er hath
• 14:33
Speaker 6: wronged them. Sure far comers anywhere I know, must bow
• 14:39
Speaker 6: them and be gentle. Nay a Greek himself. Men praise not,
• 14:44
Speaker 6: who always should seek his own will, wrecking not, but
• 14:48
Speaker 6: I this thing, undreamed of, sudden from on high hath
• 14:54
Speaker 6: sapped my soul. I dazzle where I stand. The cup
• 15:00
Speaker 6: of life shattered in my hand longing to die. O, friends,
• 15:08
Speaker 6: he even he whom to know well, was all the
• 15:12
Speaker 6: world to me. The man I loved hath proved most evil. Oh,
• 15:20
Speaker 6: of all things upon earth that bleed and grow a
• 15:24
Speaker 6: herb most bruised is woman. We must pay our store
• 15:30
Speaker 6: of gold hoarded for that one day to buy us
• 15:34
Speaker 6: some man's love. And lo they bring a master of
• 15:40
Speaker 6: our flesh. There comes the sting of the whole shame,
• 15:46
Speaker 6: and then the jeopardy for good or ill? What shall
• 15:49
Speaker 6: that master be reject she cannot, And if he but
• 15:55
Speaker 6: stays his suit, tis shame on all that woman's day.
• 16:01
Speaker 6: So throne amid new laws, new places. Why tis magic
• 16:06
Speaker 6: she must have? Or prophecy? Home never taught her that
• 16:11
Speaker 6: how best to guide toward peace? This thing that sleepeth
• 16:15
Speaker 6: at her side. And she, who laboring long, shall find
• 16:21
Speaker 6: some way whereby her lord may bear with her, nor
• 16:25
Speaker 6: fray his yoke. Too fiercely blest is the breath that
• 16:29
Speaker 6: woman draws. Else, let her pray for death. Her Lord,
• 16:36
Speaker 6: if he be wearied of the face within doors, gets
• 16:38
Speaker 6: him forth some merrier place will ease his heart. But
• 16:44
Speaker 6: she waits on her whole vision, and chained on a
• 16:49
Speaker 6: single soul. And then forsooth tis they that face the
• 16:54
Speaker 6: call of war, while we sit sheltered, hid from all peril,
• 17:00
Speaker 6: false mocking. Sooner would I stand three times to face
• 17:05
Speaker 6: their battles shield in hand, than bear one child. But
• 17:12
Speaker 6: peace there cannot be ever the same tale told of
• 17:16
Speaker 6: THEE and me. Thou hast this city and thy father's home,
• 17:21
Speaker 6: and joy of friends and hope in days to come.
• 17:25
Speaker 6: But I, being citiless, am cast aside by him that
• 17:30
Speaker 6: wedded me a savage bride, one in far seas, and
• 17:34
Speaker 6: left no mother near, no brother, not one kinsman anywhere
• 17:38
Speaker 6: for harbor in this storm. Therefore of THEE I ask
• 17:43
Speaker 6: one thing, If chance yet ok to me some path,
• 17:49
Speaker 6: if even now my hand can win strength to requite
• 17:52
Speaker 6: this Jason for his sin, betray me not, oh, in
• 17:58
Speaker 6: all things, but this I know, how full of fears
• 18:01
Speaker 6: a woman is, and faint at need and shrinking from
• 18:06
Speaker 6: the light of battle. But once spoil her of her
• 18:10
Speaker 6: right in man's love and their moves, I warn THEE well,
• 18:14
Speaker 6: no bloodier spirit between heaven and Hell.
• 18:18
Speaker 7: I will betray THEE. Not it is, but just thou
• 18:21
Speaker 7: smite him, and that weeping in the dust and stormy tears,
• 18:27
Speaker 7: How should I blame them? Stay tis Creon, Lord of Corinth,
• 18:33
Speaker 7: makes his way hither and bears methinks some word of weight.
• 18:37
Speaker 1: Enter from the right Creon the king with armed attendants.
• 18:41
Speaker 12: Thou woman, salin eyed and hot with hate against thy
• 18:45
Speaker 12: Lord Medea. I hear command that thou and thy two
• 18:50
Speaker 12: children from this land go forth to banishment. Make no delay,
• 18:56
Speaker 12: seeing ourselves the king are come this deed. See our
• 19:00
Speaker 12: charge fulfill'd. Nor shall again look home? Or dare we
• 19:04
Speaker 12: have led thy children twain and thee beyond thy realm's last.
• 19:09
Speaker 6: Boundary, lost, lost mine, haters at the helm, with sail
• 19:15
Speaker 6: flung free pursuing, and for us no beach nor shore
• 19:20
Speaker 6: in the endless waters. Yet, though stricken sore, I still
• 19:25
Speaker 6: will ask THEE for what crime? What thing unlawful? Wilt
• 19:29
Speaker 6: thou cast me out?
• 19:31
  Speaker 3: O King?
• 19:32
  Speaker 13: What crime?
• 19:33
Speaker 12: I fear THEE woman, little need to cloak my reasons.
• 19:38
Speaker 12: Rest Thou wort some deed of darkness on my child?
• 19:42
Speaker 12: And in that fear reasons enough have part. Thou comest
• 19:46
Speaker 12: here a wise woman, confessed and full of law in
• 19:51
Speaker 12: unknown ways of evil. Thou art sore in heart, being
• 19:56
Speaker 12: parted from thy lover's arms, and more thou hast made
• 20:00
Speaker 12: menace so the alarms, but now have reached mine. Ear
• 20:05
Speaker 12: on bride and groom, and him who gave the bride
• 20:08
Speaker 12: to work thy doom of vengeance, which are yet it
• 20:12
Speaker 12: be too late I sweep aside, I choose to earn
• 20:17
Speaker 12: thine hate of set will now not poder with the
• 20:21
  Speaker 12: mood of mercy.
• 20:22
Speaker 11: And hereafter weep in blood.
• 20:25
Speaker 6: Tis not the first nor second time, O King, that
• 20:29
Speaker 6: fame hath hurt me, and come nigh to bring my ruin.
• 20:34
Speaker 6: How can any man whose eyes are wholesome seek to
• 20:37
Speaker 6: rear his children wise beyond men's won't much helplessness in
• 20:43
Speaker 6: arts of common life, and in their Townsmen's hearts envy
• 20:47
Speaker 6: deep set so much their learning brings come unto fools
• 20:53
Speaker 6: with knowledge of new things. They deem it vanity, not knowledge.
• 20:59
Speaker 6: I and men that erst for wisdom were held high,
• 21:02
Speaker 6: feel thee a thorn to fret them privily held higher
• 21:05
Speaker 6: than they. So hath it been with me a wise
• 21:10
Speaker 6: woman I am, And for that sin to divers ill names,
• 21:14
Speaker 6: men would pen me in a seed of strife, an
• 21:19
Speaker 6: Eastern dreamer, one of brand, not theirs one hard to
• 21:23
Speaker 6: play upon. Ha I am not so wondrous wise, and
• 21:28
Speaker 6: now to THEE I am terrible. What fear'st thou? What
• 21:33
Speaker 6: dire need do I tread so proud a path? A
• 21:37
Speaker 6: fear me, not thou that I should brave the wrath
• 21:40
  Speaker 6: of princes?
• 21:42
  Speaker 8: Thou?
• 21:43
Speaker 6: What hast thou ever done to wrong me? Granted thine
• 21:47
Speaker 6: own child to one whom thy soul chose ah him
• 21:51
Speaker 6: out of my heart I hate, but thou meseemes hast
• 21:56
Speaker 6: done thy part, not ill, And for thine houses happiness,
• 22:00
Speaker 6: I hold no grudge. Go marry, and God bless your issues.
• 22:08
Speaker 6: Only suffer me to rest somewhere within this land. Though
• 22:13
Speaker 6: sore oppressed, I will be still, knowing mine own defeat.
• 22:18
Speaker 12: Thy words be gentle, But I fear me yet, lest
• 22:22
Speaker 12: even now they creep some wickedness deep hid within THEE.
• 22:27
Speaker 12: And for that the less I trust THEE now than
• 22:30
Speaker 12: ere these words begin. A woman quick of wrath aye,
• 22:34
Speaker 12: or a man is easier watching than the cold, and
• 22:38
Speaker 12: still up straight, And find thy road mock not my
• 22:43
Speaker 12: will with words. This doom is past beyond recall, Nor
• 22:47
Speaker 12: all thy crafts shall help THEE. Being withal my manifest
• 22:52
Speaker 12: foe to linger at.
• 22:53
Speaker 1: My side, suddenly throwing herself down and clinging to creon.
• 22:58
Speaker 6: Oh by thy knees by that new wedded.
• 23:01
Speaker 12: Bride is waste of words. Thou shalt not weaken me.
• 23:05
Speaker 6: Wilt hunt me, spurn me. When I kneel to.
• 23:08
Speaker 12: THEE is mine own house. That kneels to me, Not thou.
• 23:11
Speaker 6: Home my lost home. How I desire THEE now.
• 23:15
Speaker 12: And I mine and my child Beyond all.
• 23:19
Speaker 6: Things, Oh loves of man, What curse is on your wings?
• 23:24
Speaker 12: Blessing or curse? Tis as their chances flow?
• 23:28
Speaker 6: Remember zeus the cause of all this woe?
• 23:32
Speaker 12: Oh rid me my pains up, get THEE gone?
• 23:36
Speaker 6: What would I with thy pains? I have mine own
• 23:40
  Speaker 6: ap Oh.
• 23:41
Speaker 12: For God, my soldiers here shall fling?
• 23:44
Speaker 6: Not that not that I do, But pray, O, King.
• 23:48
Speaker 12: Thou wilt not. I must face the harsher task.
• 23:52
Speaker 6: I accept mine exile tis not that I ask?
• 23:57
Speaker 12: Why then, so wild? Why me to mine hand?
• 24:01
Speaker 1: Rising for one day?
• 24:03
Speaker 6: Only leave me in thy land at peace, to find
• 24:07
Speaker 6: some counsel. Here the strain of exile fall some comfort
• 24:12
Speaker 6: for these twain mine innocence. Since others take no thought,
• 24:17
Speaker 6: it seems to save the babes that they begot ah,
• 24:21
Speaker 6: thou wilt pity them. Thou also art a father. Thou
• 24:25
Speaker 6: hast somewhere still a heart that feels I reckon. Not
• 24:29
Speaker 6: of myself tis they that break me, fallen upon so
• 24:32
Speaker 6: dire a day mine.
• 24:34
Speaker 12: Is no tyrant's mood. Ay many a time ere this
• 24:38
Speaker 12: my tenderness hath mad the chime of wisest counsels. And
• 24:42
Speaker 12: I know that now I do mere folly. But so
• 24:47
Speaker 12: be it. Thou shalt have this grace. But this I
• 24:51
Speaker 12: warn THEE clear. If once the morrow's sunlight finds THEE
• 24:55
Speaker 12: here within my borders, thee or child of thine, thou
• 25:00
Speaker 12: diest of this judgment, not a line shall waver nor abate.
• 25:05
Speaker 12: So linger on, if thou needst must till the next
• 25:09
Speaker 12: risen sun no further in one day. This case can
• 25:13
Speaker 12: be those perils wrought whose dread yet haunteth me.
• 25:18
Speaker 1: Exit Creon with his suit o woman.
• 25:21
  Speaker 14: Woman of sorrow.
• 25:25
Speaker 10: What town shall be thine tomorrow? What land of all
• 25:29
Speaker 10: lands that be? What door of a strange man's home?
• 25:34
Speaker 9: Yea god hath hunted thee Medea forth to the foam
• 25:40
Speaker 9: of a trackless sea.
• 25:42
Speaker 6: Defeat on every side. What else? But oh not here
• 25:49
Speaker 6: the end is, think it not? I know for bride
• 25:53
Speaker 6: and groom, one battle yet untried and goodly pains for
• 25:58
Speaker 6: him that gave the tost dream. I would have groveled
• 26:05
Speaker 6: to this man, save that I won mine end and
• 26:09
Speaker 6: shaped my plan for merry deeds. My lips had never
• 26:13
Speaker 6: deigned speak word with him, My flesh be never stained
• 26:17
Speaker 6: with touching. Oh fool, O, triple fool. It lay so
• 26:24
Speaker 6: plain for him to kill my whole essay by exile swift,
• 26:28
Speaker 6: ha ha, and lo he sets me free this one
• 26:32
Speaker 6: long day wherein mine haters Three shall lie here dead,
• 26:38
Speaker 6: the father and the bride and husband mine not hers. Oh,
• 26:45
Speaker 6: I have tried so many thoughts of murder to my turn.
• 26:47
Speaker 6: I know not which best likes me. Shall I burn
• 26:53
Speaker 6: their house with fire? Or stealing past unseen to Jason's bed.
• 26:58
Speaker 6: I have a blade made keen for that stab breast
• 27:02
Speaker 6: to breast that wedded pair. Good, but for one thing.
• 27:09
Speaker 6: When I am taken there and killed, they will laugh
• 27:13
Speaker 6: loud who hate me?
• 27:15
  Speaker 3: Nay?
• 27:17
Speaker 6: I love the old way best, the simple way of poison.
• 27:22
Speaker 6: Where we two are strong as men, ah me, and
• 27:29
Speaker 6: they being dead, What place shall hold me. Then what
• 27:34
Speaker 6: friend shall rise with land and violet and trusty doors
• 27:38
Speaker 6: to shelter from their hate? This flesh none anywhere a
• 27:46
Speaker 6: little more I needs must wait, And if there ope
• 27:49
Speaker 6: some door of refuge, some strong tower to shield me
• 27:53
Speaker 6: good in craft and darkness, I will hunt this blood.
• 28:00
  Speaker 8: Else.
• 28:00
Speaker 6: If mine hour be come and no hope nigh, then
• 28:04
Speaker 6: sword in hand, full, willed and sure to die, I
• 28:08
Speaker 6: yet will live to slay them. I will wend man
• 28:14
Speaker 6: like their road of daring to the end. So help me,
• 28:20
Speaker 6: she who of all gods hath been the best to
• 28:22
Speaker 6: me of all my chosen queen and helpmate Hecatae, who
• 28:28
Speaker 6: dwells apart the flame aflame in my fire's inmost heart.
• 28:34
Speaker 6: For all their strength, they shall not stab my soul
• 28:39
Speaker 6: and laugh Thereafter dark and full of doll their bridal
• 28:43
Speaker 6: feast shall be most dark the day they joined their
• 28:47
Speaker 6: hands and hunted me away. Awake thee. Now, Medea, whatso
• 28:53
Speaker 6: plot thou hast o'er cunning, strive and falter not on
• 28:58
Speaker 6: to the peril point now comes the strain of daring?
• 29:04
Speaker 6: Shall they trample thee again? How and with hellas laughing
• 29:09
Speaker 6: o'er thy fall, while this thief's daughter weds and weds
• 29:13
Speaker 6: withal Jason. A true king was thy father, yea, and
• 29:19
Speaker 6: born of the ancient son. Thou knowest the way, and
• 29:24
Speaker 6: God hath made thee woman things most vain for help
• 29:29
Speaker 6: but wondrous. In the paths of pain.
• 29:32
Speaker 1: Medea goes into the house.
• 29:34
Speaker 14: Back streams the way on the river life life is changed, and.
• 29:41
Speaker 1: The laws of it trod.
• 29:44
Speaker 7: Man shall be the slave, the affrighted, the low liver.
• 29:48
Speaker 7: Man hath forgotten God. And woman, yea, woman shall be
• 29:54
Speaker 7: terrible in story, the tales too, meseemeth shall be other
• 29:59
Speaker 7: than of your For a fear there is that cometh
• 30:03
Speaker 7: out of woman and a glory, and the hard, hating
• 30:06
Speaker 7: voices shall encompass her no more.
• 30:09
Speaker 8: The old bards shall cease, and their memory that lingers
• 30:14
Speaker 8: of frail brides and faithless shall be shriveled, as with fire.
• 30:20
Speaker 8: For they loved us not nor knew us, and our
• 30:23
Speaker 8: lips were dumb. Our fingers could not wake the secret
• 30:27
Speaker 8: of the lyre. Else else, o God, the singer I
• 30:33
Speaker 8: had sung amid their rages, a long tale of man
• 30:37
Speaker 8: and his deeds for good and ill. But the old
• 30:41
Speaker 8: world knoweth tis the speech of all his ages, Man's
• 30:46
Speaker 8: wrong and ours. He knoweth, and is still.
• 30:50
Speaker 10: Forth from thy father's home. Thou camest o heart of fire,
• 30:55
Speaker 10: to the dark blue rocks, to the clashing foam, to
• 30:59
Speaker 10: the seas of thy desire, till the dark blue bar
• 31:04
Speaker 10: was crossed and lo by an alien river, standing thy lover, lost, void,
• 31:13
Speaker 10: armed forever forth yet again, a lowest of landless women,
• 31:19
Speaker 10: a ranger of desolate ways. Thou goest from the walls
• 31:24
  Speaker 10: of the stranger.
• 31:25
Speaker 9: And the great oath waxeth weak and ruth as a
• 31:29
Speaker 9: thing outstriven is fled, fled from the shores of the
• 31:35
Speaker 9: Greek away on the winds of heaven. Dark is the
• 31:39
Speaker 9: house afar, where an old king called thee daughter, all
• 31:45
Speaker 9: that was once thy star, in stormy water, dark and
• 31:51
Speaker 9: low in the nearer house that was sworn to love
• 31:55
Speaker 9: thee another queenlier dearer, is thrown nets above thee enter
• 32:02
  Speaker 9: from the.
• 32:03
Speaker 3: Right Jason, Aught have I seen in other days than these?
• 32:06
Speaker 3: How a dark temper maketh maladies no friend can heal.
• 32:11
Speaker 3: Twas easy to have kept both land and home it needed,
• 32:15
Speaker 3: but to accept unstrivingly the pleasure of our lords. But thou,
• 32:19
Speaker 3: from mere delight in stormy words, wilt lose all. Now
• 32:24
Speaker 3: thy speech provokes not me rail on of all mankind,
• 32:28
Speaker 3: that Jason be most evil. Nonch'll check THEE. But for
• 32:32
Speaker 3: these dark threats cast out against the majesties of corinth
• 32:37
Speaker 3: count as variest gain thy path of exile. I myself,
• 32:41
Speaker 3: when princely wrath, was hot against THEE, strove with all
• 32:44
Speaker 3: good will to appease the wrath, and wished to keep
• 32:47
Speaker 3: THEE still beside me. But thy mouth would never stay
• 32:50
Speaker 3: from vanity, blaspheming night and day our masters. Therefore thou
• 32:55
Speaker 3: shalt fly the land. Yet even so I will not
• 32:59
Speaker 3: hold my hand and from succoring mine own people. Here
• 33:03
Speaker 3: am I to help THEE woman pondering heathly thy new state,
• 33:06
Speaker 3: For I would not have THEE flung provisionless away. I
• 33:09
Speaker 3: am the young children as well, Nor lacking art, that
• 33:14
Speaker 3: will of mine can bring THEE many a lesser ill
• 33:18
Speaker 3: hangs on the heels of exile. And though thou hate me,
• 33:22
Speaker 3: dream not that my heart can know or fashion aught
• 33:25
Speaker 3: of angry will to.
• 33:27
Speaker 6: THEE evil most evil. Since thou grantest me that comfort,
• 33:35
Speaker 6: the worst weapon left me now to smite a coward,
• 33:39
Speaker 6: Thou comest to me, thou mine enemy. Oh say, how
• 33:47
Speaker 6: call ye this to face and smile the comrade whom
• 33:51
Speaker 6: his kiss betrayed, Scorn, insult, courage. None of these tis
• 34:01
Speaker 6: but of all man's inward sicknesses. The vilest that he
• 34:05
Speaker 6: knoweth not of shame nor pity. Yet I praise him
• 34:09
Speaker 6: that he came to me. It shall bring comfort once
• 34:15
Speaker 6: to clear my heart on thee, and thou shalt WinCE
• 34:18
Speaker 6: to hear, I will begin with that TwixT me and
• 34:23
Speaker 6: THEE that first befell I saved thee. I saved thee.
• 34:30
Speaker 6: Let thine own Greeks be witness. Every one that sailed
• 34:33
Speaker 6: on Argo saved thee sent alone to yoke with yokes
• 34:38
Speaker 6: the bulls of fiery breath. And so that acre of
• 34:40
Speaker 6: the lords of death, and mine own ancient serpent, who
• 34:45
Speaker 6: did keep the golden fleece, the eyes that knew not sleep,
• 34:50
Speaker 6: and shining coils him. Also did I smite dead for
• 34:55
Speaker 6: thy sake, and lifted up the light that bade THEE live.
• 35:01
Speaker 6: Myself uncounseled, stole forth from father and from home, and
• 35:06
Speaker 6: fled where dark iolcus under pellion lies with thee oh,
• 35:10
Speaker 6: single hearted, more than wise, I murdered Pelias Yea in
• 35:15
Speaker 6: agony by his own daughter's hands, for sake of THEE.
• 35:20
Speaker 6: I swept their house like war, And hast thou then
• 35:25
Speaker 6: accept it all o evil yet again, and cast me off,
• 35:29
Speaker 6: and taken THEE for bride another, And with children at
• 35:34
Speaker 6: thy side, one could forgive a childless man, But no
• 35:39
Speaker 6: I have borne THEE children his sworn faith so low
• 35:45
Speaker 6: and weak a thing I understand it. Not are the
• 35:50
Speaker 6: old gods dead? Are the old laws forgot? And new
• 35:54
  Speaker 6: laws made?
• 35:56
  Speaker 8: Since?
• 35:56
Speaker 6: Not my passioning but thine own heart doth cry THEE
• 36:00
Speaker 6: for a thing for sworn.
• 36:02
Speaker 1: She catches sight of her own hand, which she hath
• 36:04
Speaker 1: thrown out to denounce him.
• 36:07
Speaker 6: Poor poor right hand of mine, whom he did cling to,
• 36:12
Speaker 6: And these knees so cravingly. We are unclean, thou and I.
• 36:19
Speaker 6: We have caught the stain of bad men's flesh, and
• 36:23
Speaker 6: dreamed our dreams in vain. Thou comest befriend me, give me, then,
• 36:30
Speaker 6: thy counsel, tis not that I dream again for good
• 36:34
Speaker 6: from THEE. But questioned, thou wilt show the vileer, Say now,
• 36:40
Speaker 6: whither shall I go back? To my father him I
• 36:45
Speaker 6: did betray and all his land when we two fled
• 36:47
Speaker 6: away to those poor peliad mates, for them twear good
• 36:53
Speaker 6: to take me in, who spilled their father's blood. Ay,
• 36:58
Speaker 6: so my whole life stand. There were at home who
• 37:02
Speaker 6: loved me well. To them I am become a curse.
• 37:06
Speaker 6: And the first friends who sheltered me, whom most I
• 37:10
Speaker 6: should have spared to pleasure thee I have turned to foes.
• 37:14
Speaker 6: Ho therefore hast thou laid my crown upon me, blest
• 37:18
Speaker 6: of many a maiden? Hellas now I have won what
• 37:21
Speaker 6: all did crave, thee, the world wondered lover, and the
• 37:28
Speaker 6: brave who this day looks and seize me banished, thrown
• 37:34
Speaker 6: away with these two babes, all all alone, O merry mocking.
• 37:43
Speaker 6: When the lamps are red, Where go the bridegroom's babes
• 37:47
Speaker 6: to beg their bread in exile? And the woman who
• 37:51
Speaker 6: gave all to save him? Oh, Great God, shall goldwith
• 37:58
Speaker 6: all bear thy clear mark to sift the base and
• 38:01
Speaker 6: fine and all man's living visage runs no sign to
• 38:05
Speaker 6: show the lie within air All too.
• 38:09
Speaker 7: Late, dire and beyond all healing is the hate when
• 38:13
Speaker 7: hearts that loved are turned to enmity in speech.
• 38:17
Speaker 3: At least miss myth. I must be not evil. But
• 38:21
Speaker 3: as some old pilot goes furled to his sail's last
• 38:24
Speaker 3: edge when danger blows to fiery, run before the wind
• 38:28
Speaker 3: and swell woman of thy loud storms. And thus I
• 38:33
  Speaker 3: tell my tale.
• 38:35
Speaker 15: Since thou wilt build so wondrous high thy deeds of
• 38:39
Speaker 15: service in my jeopardy to all my crew and quest,
• 38:43
Speaker 15: I know but one savior of God's or mortals, one.
• 38:47
Speaker 3: Alone, the Cyprian. Oh, thou hast brain and wity underneath. Nay,
• 38:54
Speaker 3: all the tale of it were graceless, telling how sheer
• 38:58
Speaker 3: love a fire of poisoned shafts compelled THEE with desire
• 39:02
Speaker 3: to save me. But enough I will not score that
• 39:06
Speaker 3: count too close. Twas good help, and therefore I give
• 39:11
Speaker 3: THEE thanks howe'er the help was wrought. Howbeit in my
• 39:14
Speaker 3: deliverance thou hast got far more than given a good
• 39:19
Speaker 3: Greek land, hath been thy lasting home, not barbary. Thou
• 39:24
Speaker 3: hast seen our ordered life and justice, and the long
• 39:27
Speaker 3: still grasp of law not changing with the strong man's pleasure.
• 39:32
Speaker 3: Then all hellas far and near hath learned thy wisdom,
• 39:36
Speaker 3: and in every ear thy fame is had thy days
• 39:40
Speaker 3: learned by unseen on that last edge of the world,
• 39:43
Speaker 3: where that had been the story of great Medea. Thou
• 39:46
Speaker 3: and I? What worth to us? Would treasures heap it
• 39:49
Speaker 3: high in rich king's rooms? What worth a voice of
• 39:52
Speaker 3: gold more sweet than ever rang from orpheus old? Unless
• 39:56
Speaker 3: our deeds have glory? Speak I so touching the quest,
• 40:02
Speaker 3: I wrot thyself, did throw the challenge down next with
• 40:07
Speaker 3: thy caveling of wrath at mine alliance with a king.
• 40:10
Speaker 3: Here thou should say I both was wise and free
• 40:13
Speaker 3: from touch of passion, and a friend to thee most
• 40:16
Speaker 3: potent and my children nay bee. Still, when first I
• 40:21
Speaker 3: stood in Corinth, clogged with ill for many a desperate mischance,
• 40:25
Speaker 3: What bliss could I that day have dreamed of? Like
• 40:28
Speaker 3: to this? To wed with the king's daughter I exiled
• 40:31
Speaker 3: and beggared. Not what makes thy passion wild from loathing
• 40:35
Speaker 3: of thy bed, not overfraught with love for this new bride.
• 40:39
Speaker 3: Not that I sought to upbuild mine house with offspring
• 40:43
Speaker 3: is enough with thou wast born. I make no word thereof,
• 40:47
Speaker 3: but first and greatest, that we all might dwell in
• 40:50
Speaker 3: a fair house, and what not, knowing well that poor
• 40:53
Speaker 3: men have no friends but far and near, shutting in silence. Next,
• 40:59
Speaker 3: I sought to rear our sons in nurture worthy of
• 41:01
Speaker 3: my race, and raising brethren to them in one place,
• 41:05
Speaker 3: join both my houses, and be all from now prince
• 41:08
Speaker 3: like and happy. What more need hast thou of children?
• 41:13
Speaker 3: And for me it serves my star to link in
• 41:15
Speaker 3: strength the children that now are with those that sall
• 41:18
Speaker 3: be have I counseled, ill not thine own self would
• 41:23
Speaker 3: say it couldst thou still one hour? Thy jealous flesh
• 41:27
Speaker 3: tis ever so who looks for more in women? When
• 41:31
Speaker 3: the flow of love runs plain? Why oh the world
• 41:33
Speaker 3: is fair. But once therefore some ill chance anywhere to
• 41:37
Speaker 3: balk that thirst down In swift hate, are trod men's
• 41:41
Speaker 3: dearest aims at noblest would to God we mortals by
• 41:45
Speaker 3: some other seed could raise our fruits, and no blind
• 41:48
Speaker 3: women block our ways. Then had there been no curse
• 41:51
  Speaker 3: to wreck mankind.
• 41:53
Speaker 7: Lord Jason, very subtly hast thou twine thy speech. But
• 41:58
Speaker 7: yet though all thy will I speak, this is not
• 42:03
Speaker 7: well Thou dost but ill betraying her who loved Thee
• 42:07
  Speaker 7: and was true.
• 42:09
Speaker 6: Surely I have my thoughts, and not a few have
• 42:13
Speaker 6: held me strange to me, it seemeth when a crafty
• 42:18
Speaker 6: tongue is given to evil men, tis like to wreck,
• 42:23
Speaker 6: not help them. Their own brain tempts them with lies,
• 42:28
Speaker 6: to dare, and dare again, till no man hath enough
• 42:33
Speaker 6: of subtlety, as thou be, not so seeming fair to me,
• 42:39
Speaker 6: nor deft of speech. One word will make THEE fall?
• 42:45
Speaker 6: Would thou not false twas thine to tell me all
• 42:49
Speaker 6: and charge me help thy marriage path, as I did
• 42:53
Speaker 6: love Thee, not befool me with a lie.
• 42:57
Speaker 3: An easy task of that being. I am our loving aid,
• 43:01
Speaker 3: who canst not even now still that loud heart that
• 43:04
Speaker 3: surges like the tide.
• 43:06
Speaker 6: That moved Thee. Not thine old barbarian bride, the dog
• 43:11
Speaker 6: out of the east, who loved THEE sore she grew
• 43:14
Speaker 6: gray haired, she served thy pride.
• 43:16
Speaker 3: No more now understand, for once the girl to me
• 43:20
Speaker 3: is nothing in this web of sovereignty I hold. I
• 43:23
Speaker 3: do but seek to save even yet THEE. And for brethren,
• 43:28
Speaker 3: to our sons, beget young kings to prosper all our lives.
• 43:32
Speaker 6: Again, God shelter me from prosperous days of pain and
• 43:36
Speaker 6: wealth that maketh wounds about my heart will.
• 43:40
Speaker 3: Change that prayer, and she's a wiser part. Pray not
• 43:42
Speaker 3: to hold true sense for pain, nor rate thyself unhappy,
• 43:47
  Speaker 3: being too fortunate.
• 43:49
Speaker 6: I mock me. Thou hast where to lay thine head,
• 43:53
Speaker 6: But I go naked to mine exile.
• 43:56
Speaker 3: Tread thine own path.
• 43:57
Speaker 6: Thou hast made it all to be, how by seducing
• 44:01
Speaker 6: and forsaking thee, by.
• 44:03
Speaker 3: Those vile curses on the royal halls, Let.
• 44:06
Speaker 6: Loose on thy house also as chance falls, I am
• 44:10
  Speaker 6: a living curse.
• 44:11
Speaker 3: Ah peace enough of these vain wars, I will know
• 44:15
Speaker 3: more thereof if thou wilt take from all that I
• 44:18
Speaker 3: possess eight for these babes and mine own helplessness of exile,
• 44:22
Speaker 3: speak thy bidding here. I stand fore willed to succor
• 44:25
Speaker 3: THEE with stithless hand, and send my signet to old
• 44:28
Speaker 3: friends that dwell on foreign yours, who will entreat THEE well. Refuse,
• 44:33
Speaker 3: and thou shalt do a deed most vain, But cast
• 44:36
Speaker 3: thy rage away, and thou shalt gain much and lose
• 44:39
Speaker 3: little for thine anger's sake.
• 44:41
Speaker 6: I will not seek thy friends. I will not take
• 44:44
Speaker 6: thy givings, give them naught fruits of a stem unholy,
• 44:48
Speaker 6: Bring no blessing after them.
• 44:50
Speaker 3: Now, God in Heaven be thy witness. All My heart
• 44:53
Speaker 3: is willing in all ways to do its part for
• 44:56
Speaker 3: THEE and for thy babes. But nothing good can please
• 44:59
Speaker 3: THEE in sheer savageness of moved that driver us from me,
• 45:03
Speaker 3: every friend. Wherefore I warrant THEE thy pains shall be.
• 45:07
Speaker 1: The more he goes slowly away.
• 45:10
Speaker 6: Go thou art weary for the new delight. Thou wooest
• 45:17
Speaker 6: so long, tarrying out of sight of her sweet chamber.
• 45:22
Speaker 6: Go fulfill thy pride, oh bridegroom, for it may be
• 45:28
Speaker 6: such a bride shall wait thee. Yea God hereth me
• 45:33
Speaker 6: in this as thine own heart shall sicken, eer it kiss.
• 45:40
Speaker 1: End of Section one.
• 45:43
Speaker 14: Alas the love that falls liked, strong winged, and transitory,
• 45:50
Speaker 14: what praise him, be good, good man.
• 45:55
  Speaker 4: Or glory.
• 45:56
Speaker 8: Yet love there is that moves in gentleness, heart filling,
• 46:01
Speaker 8: sweetest of all powers that bless loose not on me,
• 46:06
Speaker 8: o holder of man's heart, thy golden quiver, nor steep
• 46:11
Speaker 8: in poison of desire. The dart that heals not ever.
• 46:15
Speaker 10: The pent hate of the word that caveleth, the strife
• 46:19
Speaker 10: that hath no fill where once was fondness, and the
• 46:24
Speaker 10: mad heart's breath for strange love panting still o Cyprian.
• 46:31
Speaker 10: Cast me not on these, but sift, keen, eyed of love.
• 46:37
Speaker 10: The good and evil gift make innocence my friend, God's
• 46:43
Speaker 10: fairest star yea and abate. Not the rare sweet beat
• 46:49
Speaker 10: of bosoms without war, that love and hate.
• 46:54
Speaker 9: Not home of my heart, land of my own. Cast
• 46:59
Speaker 9: me not nay for pity, out of my ways, helpless
• 47:05
Speaker 9: alone where the feet fail in the mire and stone,
• 47:10
Speaker 9: a woman without a city, ah. Not that better the
• 47:16
Speaker 9: end the green grave cover me. Rather, if a break
• 47:21
Speaker 9: must come in the days I know, and the skies
• 47:25
Speaker 9: be changed, and the earth below, for the weariest road
• 47:30
Speaker 9: that man may wend is forth from the home of
• 47:33
  Speaker 9: his father.
• 47:35
Speaker 7: Lo we have seen. Tis not a song sung, nor
• 47:39
Speaker 7: learned of another. For whom hast thou in thy direst
• 47:43
Speaker 7: wrong for comfort. Never a city strong to hide thee
• 47:48
Speaker 7: never a brother ah, but the man cursed be he
• 47:54
Speaker 7: cursed beyond recover, who openeth shattering seal by sea, A
• 48:00
Speaker 7: friend's clean heart then turns his heel death unto love.
• 48:06
Speaker 8: Never in me, friends, shall he know nor a lover.
• 48:10
Speaker 1: While Medea is waiting downcast, seated upon her doorstep. There
• 48:15
Speaker 1: passes from the left. A traveler would follow us. As
• 48:18
Speaker 1: he catches sight of media, he stops.
• 48:21
Speaker 5: Have joy. Medea tis the homeliest word that old friends
• 48:26
Speaker 5: can greet with, and the best looking up.
• 48:29
Speaker 6: Surprised, Oh, joy on thee too igeous, gentle king of Athens.
• 48:35
Speaker 6: But whence comest thou journeying.
• 48:37
Speaker 5: From Delphie now? And the old in cabin stare.
• 48:41
Speaker 6: Where Earth's heart speaks in song?
• 48:44
  Speaker 1: What maetst thou?
• 48:44
  Speaker 3: There?
• 48:45
Speaker 5: Ah prayed heaven for children the same search.
• 48:50
Speaker 6: Alway children, Oh God art childless to this day?
• 48:56
Speaker 5: So God hath willed childless and desolate?
• 49:00
Speaker 6: What word did Phoebus speak to change thy fate?
• 49:04
Speaker 5: Riddles too hard for more.
• 49:06
Speaker 6: Man to read, which I may hear.
• 49:09
Speaker 5: Assuredly they need a raarer wit?
• 49:12
Speaker 6: How said he not to.
• 49:14
Speaker 5: Spill thy swine, nor seek for more until until I
• 49:21
Speaker 5: tread the hearstone of my sires of yore?
• 49:25
Speaker 6: And what should bring thee here by creon shore?
• 49:29
  Speaker 12: One?
• 49:29
Speaker 5: Piteous knowest thou high Lord of Trozen.
• 49:33
Speaker 6: A Pelop's son, a man most pure of sin.
• 49:37
Speaker 5: Him, I would ask, touching Apollo's will.
• 49:39
Speaker 6: Much use in God's waighs hath he and much skill.
• 49:43
Speaker 5: And long years back he was my battle friend, the
• 49:46
Speaker 5: truest air man had.
• 49:48
Speaker 6: Well, May God send good hap to thee and grant
• 49:52
  Speaker 6: all thy desire.
• 49:53
Speaker 5: But thou, thy frame is wasted, and the fire dead
• 49:58
  Speaker 5: in thine eyes.
• 50:01
Speaker 6: My husband is the falsest man in the world.
• 50:05
Speaker 5: What word is this? Say? Clearly? What thus makes thy
• 50:10
  Speaker 5: visage dim?
• 50:11
Speaker 6: He is false to me, who never injured him?
• 50:15
Speaker 5: What hath he done? Show all that I may see?
• 50:18
Speaker 6: Tain him a wife, a wife set over me to
• 50:23
  Speaker 6: rule his house?
• 50:25
Speaker 5: He hath not dared to do Jason a thing so shameful.
• 50:30
Speaker 6: Ay tis true, And those he loved of yore have
• 50:34
  Speaker 6: no place now.
• 50:35
Speaker 5: Some passion sweep with him? Or is it thou?
• 50:38
Speaker 6: He turns from passion passion to betray his dearest shame.
• 50:44
Speaker 5: Be his so fallen away from.
• 50:46
Speaker 6: Honor, passion to be near a throne, a king's heir.
• 50:50
Speaker 5: How who gives a bride?
• 50:53
Speaker 6: Say on, Creon, who o'er all Corinth standeth? Chief woman?
• 50:59
Speaker 5: Thou indeed much cause for grief.
• 51:03
Speaker 6: Tis ruin, and they have cast me out as well.
• 51:07
Speaker 5: Who tis a new wrong?
• 51:09
Speaker 6: This and terrible creon the king from every land and shore.
• 51:15
Speaker 5: And Jason suff was him. Oh tis too sore.
• 51:20
Speaker 6: He loveth to bear bravely ills like these. But jeus
• 51:26
Speaker 6: by thy beard, oh by thy knees, I pray thee,
• 51:30
Speaker 6: and I give me for thine own, thy suppliant pity me, Oh,
• 51:36
Speaker 6: pity one so miserable. Thou never wilt stand there and
• 51:40
Speaker 6: see me cast out, friendless to despair. Give me a
• 51:44
Speaker 6: home in Athens by the fire of thine own hearth. Oh,
• 51:48
Speaker 6: so may thy desire of children be fulfilled of God,
• 51:51
Speaker 6: and thou die happy. Thou canst know not even now
• 51:56
Speaker 6: thy prize is won. Ay, I will make of thee
• 52:00
Speaker 6: a childless man. No more the seed shall be. I
• 52:04
Speaker 6: swear it sown such magic herbs, I know, woman.
• 52:08
Speaker 5: Indeed, my heart goes forth to show this help to thee.
• 52:12
Speaker 5: First for religion's sake, then for thy promised hope to
• 52:16
Speaker 5: heal my ache of childlessness. Tis this hath made mine
• 52:21
Speaker 5: whole life as a shadow, and starved out my soul.
• 52:25
Speaker 5: But thus it stands with me. Once make thy way
• 52:29
Speaker 5: to attic earth. Ay, as in law, I may will
• 52:32
Speaker 5: keep THEE and befriend. But in this land, where Creon rules,
• 52:38
Speaker 5: I may not raise my hand to shelter THEE move
• 52:41
Speaker 5: of thine own essay to seek my house there Thou
• 52:45
Speaker 5: shalt always stay invalid, never to be seized again. Become
• 52:51
Speaker 5: thyself on Corinth, I would fain, even in foreign eyes.
• 52:55
  Speaker 5: Be always just.
• 52:57
Speaker 6: Tis well, give me an oath wherein to trust, and
• 53:00
Speaker 6: all that man could ask thou hast granted me.
• 53:03
Speaker 5: Dost trust me not? Or what thing troubleth THEE?
• 53:07
Speaker 6: I trust THEE, But so many far and near do
• 53:11
Speaker 6: hate me, all King Pelias house and here Creon. Once
• 53:17
Speaker 6: bound by oaths and sanctities, Thou canst not yield me
• 53:21
Speaker 6: up for such as these to drag from Athens. But
• 53:24
Speaker 6: a spoken word no more to bind THEE, which no
• 53:28
Speaker 6: god hath heard. The embassies, methinks, would come and go.
• 53:32
Speaker 6: They are all friends to THEE. Ah Me, I know
• 53:36
Speaker 6: thou wilt not list to me. So weak am I?
• 53:39
Speaker 6: And they fulfilled with gold and majesty.
• 53:42
Speaker 5: Methinks tis a far foresight this thine oath. Still, if
• 53:48
Speaker 5: thou so wilt have it, nothing loath I am to
• 53:52
Speaker 5: serve THEE. Mine on hand is so the stronger if
• 53:56
Speaker 5: I have this flea to show thy persecutors, and for
• 53:59
Speaker 5: THEE with the bond more sure, and what God shall I.
• 54:04
Speaker 6: Call swear by the earth, Thou tread'st by the sun,
• 54:09
Speaker 6: sire of my sires, and all the gods as.
• 54:12
Speaker 5: One to do what THEE will not do.
• 54:16
Speaker 6: May complain, never thyself to cast me out again, nor
• 54:20
Speaker 6: let another whatsoe'er his plea take me, while thou yet
• 54:24
Speaker 6: livest or art free.
• 54:26
Speaker 5: Never so hear me Earth and the great Star of daylight,
• 54:30
Speaker 5: and all other gods that are tis well.
• 54:35
Speaker 6: And if thou falter from thy vow.
• 54:38
Speaker 5: God's judgment on the godless, break my brow.
• 54:43
Speaker 6: Go go thy ways, rejoicing all is bright and clear
• 54:49
Speaker 6: before me. Go, and ere the Knight myself will follow.
• 54:53
Speaker 6: When the deed is done, I purpose, and the end
• 54:57
Speaker 6: I thirst for one.
• 54:59
Speaker 1: I goes and his train depart.
• 55:01
Speaker 14: Farewell, and Maya's guiding son back lead THEE to thy heart,
• 55:07
Speaker 14: and fire ages and all long desire.
• 55:11
  Speaker 5: That wasteth THEE.
• 55:12
  Speaker 9: At last, long.
• 55:16
Speaker 8: As our heart a gentle and a righteous heart.
• 55:21
Speaker 6: God and God's justice, and ye blinding skies at last
• 55:27
Speaker 6: the victory doneth yea mine eyes see, and my foot
• 55:32
Speaker 6: is on the mountain's brow. Mine enemies, all mine enemies.
• 55:39
Speaker 6: Now atonement cometh here at my worst hour a friend
• 55:44
Speaker 6: is found, a very port of power to save my shipwreck.
• 55:49
Speaker 6: Here will I make fast mine anchor and escape them
• 55:52
Speaker 6: at the last in Athens walllet hill. But ere the
• 55:56
Speaker 6: end tis meet. I show thee all my counsel friends,
• 56:00
Speaker 6: and take it no tale to make men laugh withal
• 56:05
Speaker 6: straightway to Jason, I will send some thraught to entreat
• 56:08
Speaker 6: him to my presence. Comes he here? Then, with soft
• 56:13
Speaker 6: reasons will I feed his ear? How his will now
• 56:17
Speaker 6: is my will? How all things are well touching this
• 56:22
Speaker 6: marriage bed of kings, for which I am betrayed, all
• 56:25
Speaker 6: wise and rare and profitable. Yet will I make one
• 56:30
Speaker 6: prayer that my two children be no more exiled? But stay, Oh,
• 56:35
Speaker 6: not that I would leave a child here upon angry shores,
• 56:39
Speaker 6: till those have laughed who hate me. Tis that I
• 56:43
Speaker 6: will slay by craft the King's daughter with gifts. They
• 56:48
Speaker 6: shall be sent gift to the bride despair their banishment,
• 56:53
Speaker 6: fine robings and a carcanet of gold, which raiment let
• 56:57
Speaker 6: her wants, but take and foe her a foul death.
• 57:03
Speaker 6: Shall that girl die, and all who touch her in
• 57:06
Speaker 6: her agony such poison? Shall they drink My robe and wreath,
• 57:13
Speaker 6: howbeit of that no more, I gnash my teeth, thinking
• 57:17
Speaker 6: on what a path my feet must tread. Thereafter I
• 57:22
Speaker 6: shall lay those children dead mine, whom no hand shall
• 57:27
Speaker 6: steal from me away. Then, leaving Jason childless, and the
• 57:32
Speaker 6: day as night above him, I will go my road
• 57:36
Speaker 6: to exile, flying, flying from the blood of these, my
• 57:41
Speaker 6: best beloved, and having wrought all horror, so but one
• 57:45
Speaker 6: thing reach me, not the laugh of them that hate us.
• 57:50
Speaker 6: Let it come what profits life to me? I have
• 57:55
Speaker 6: no home, no country now, nor shield from any wrong.
• 57:59
Speaker 6: That was my evil hour when down the long halls
• 58:02
Speaker 6: of my father out I stole my will, chained by
• 58:06
Speaker 6: a Greek man's voice. Who still, Oh still, if God
• 58:12
Speaker 6: yet live, shall all requited be.
• 58:17
  Speaker 3: For?
• 58:18
Speaker 6: Never child of mine shall Jason see hereafter living, never
• 58:22
Speaker 6: child beget from his new bride, who this day desolate,
• 58:27
Speaker 6: even as ye made me desolate, shall die shrieking abid
• 58:31
Speaker 6: my poisons. Names have I among your folk? One light,
• 58:37
Speaker 6: one week of hand? An Eastern dreamer nay, but with
• 58:43
Speaker 6: the brand of strange sons, burnt my hate by God
• 58:47
Speaker 6: above a perilous thing, and passing sweet my love for
• 58:53
Speaker 6: these it is that make life glorious.
• 58:57
Speaker 7: Since thou hast bared thy fell intent to us, I
• 59:01
Speaker 7: loving thee and helping in their need Man's laws, ajure
• 59:06
Speaker 7: thee dream not of this deed.
• 59:09
Speaker 6: There is no other way. I pardon thee, thy littleness,
• 59:13
Speaker 6: who art not wronged like me?
• 59:16
Speaker 7: Thou canst not kill the fruit thy body bore.
• 59:19
Speaker 6: Yes, if the man I hate be pained the more.
• 59:23
Speaker 7: And thou made miserable, most miserable.
• 59:27
Speaker 6: How let it come, all words of good or ill
• 59:30
  Speaker 6: are wasted.
• 59:31
Speaker 1: Now she claps her hands. The nurse comes out from
• 59:36
  Speaker 1: the house.
• 59:37
Speaker 6: Ho woman, get thee gone, and lead Lord Jason hither.
• 59:42
Speaker 6: There is none like THEE to work me these high services.
• 59:46
Speaker 6: But speak no word of what my purpose is? Hast
• 59:48
Speaker 6: thou art faithful, thou and bold to try all succors
• 59:52
Speaker 6: and a woman even.
• 59:53
Speaker 1: As I the nurse departs.
• 59:55
Speaker 8: The sons of Erectheus, the old un whom High God
• 1:00:00
Speaker 8: planted of yore in an old land of heaven, upholden,
• 1:00:05
Speaker 8: a proud land untrodden of war, they are hungered and
• 1:00:10
Speaker 8: lo their desire with wisdom is fed as with meat.
• 1:00:14
Speaker 8: In their skies is a shining of fire, a joy
• 1:00:18
Speaker 8: in the fall of their feet, And thither with manifold
• 1:00:23
Speaker 8: dowers from the north, from the hills, from the morn.
• 1:00:28
Speaker 8: The muses did gather their powers that a child of
• 1:00:31
Speaker 8: the nine should be borne, and harmony sown, as the
• 1:00:36
Speaker 8: flowers grew gold in the acres of corn.
• 1:00:40
Speaker 10: And Sephesus, the fair flowing river. The Cyprian dipping her
• 1:00:45
Speaker 10: hand hath drawn of his dew, and the shiver of
• 1:00:50
Speaker 10: her touch is as joy in the land. For her
• 1:00:53
Speaker 10: breathing in fragrance is written, and in music her path
• 1:00:58
Speaker 10: as she goes, and the cloud of her hair it
• 1:01:02
Speaker 10: is litten with stars of the wind woven rose. So
• 1:01:07
Speaker 10: fareth she ever and ever and forth of her bosom
• 1:01:12
Speaker 10: is blown as dews on the winds of the river,
• 1:01:16
Speaker 10: and hunger of passions unknown, strong loves of all godlike endeavor,
• 1:01:23
Speaker 10: whom wisdom shall throne on her throne.
• 1:01:27
Speaker 9: But Cephysus, the fair flowing will he bear thee on
• 1:01:31
Speaker 9: his shore? Shall the land that succ hers all suck her?
• 1:01:36
Speaker 9: Thee who art foul among thy kind, with the tears
• 1:01:41
Speaker 9: of children blind. Dost thou see the red gash growing
• 1:01:47
Speaker 9: thine own burden. Dost thou see every side every way.
• 1:01:54
Speaker 9: Lo we kneel to THEE and pray by thy knees,
• 1:01:59
Speaker 9: by thy soul, O woman, wild one, at least thou
• 1:02:04
Speaker 9: canst not slay not thy child.
• 1:02:08
Speaker 7: Hast thou ies that thou shalt bind it to thy
• 1:02:11
Speaker 7: breast and make THEE dead to thy children, to thine
• 1:02:14
Speaker 7: own spirit's pain, when the hand knows what it dares,
• 1:02:19
Speaker 7: when thine eyes look into theirs, shalt thou keep thy
• 1:02:23
Speaker 7: tears unblinded, thy dividing of the slain. These be deeds
• 1:02:28
Speaker 7: not for THEE. These be things that cannot be thy babes.
• 1:02:34
Speaker 7: Though thine hardihood be fell when they cling about thy knee,
• 1:02:39
  Speaker 7: twill be well.
• 1:02:41
Speaker 3: And to Jason, I answer to thy call. Though full
• 1:02:45
Speaker 3: of hate thou be, I yet will not so far
• 1:02:47
Speaker 3: abeat my kindness for THEE, nor refuse mine ear say
• 1:02:51
Speaker 3: in what new desire thou hast called me here?
• 1:02:54
Speaker 6: Jason, I pray THEE for my words, but now spoken
• 1:03:00
Speaker 6: forgive me my bad moods. O thou, at least wilt
• 1:03:06
Speaker 6: strive to bear with them? There be many old deeds
• 1:03:09
Speaker 6: of love TwixT me and THEE. Lo I have reasoned
• 1:03:14
Speaker 6: with myself apart and chidden. Why must I be mad,
• 1:03:19
Speaker 6: o heart of mine, and raging against one whose word
• 1:03:23
Speaker 6: is wisdom, making me a thing abhored to them that
• 1:03:26
Speaker 6: rule the land, and to mine own husband, who doth
• 1:03:30
Speaker 6: but that which being done will help us all to
• 1:03:34
Speaker 6: wed a queen and get young kings for brethren, to
• 1:03:36
Speaker 6: my sons. And yet I rage alone and cannot quit
• 1:03:42
Speaker 6: my rage? What aileth me when God sends harborage? So simple?
• 1:03:49
Speaker 6: Have I not my children? No I not? We are
• 1:03:53
Speaker 6: but exiles, and must go beggard and friendless. Else. Thought
• 1:03:58
Speaker 6: upon thought so pressed me till I knew myself full
• 1:04:02
Speaker 6: fraught with bitterness of heart and blinded eyes. So now
• 1:04:08
Speaker 6: I give THEE thanks, and hold THEE wise to have
• 1:04:11
Speaker 6: caught this anchor for our aid. The fool was I
• 1:04:15
Speaker 6: who should have been thy friend, thy tool, gone wooing
• 1:04:19
Speaker 6: with THEE, stood at thy bedside, serving and welcomed duteously
• 1:04:23
Speaker 6: thy bride. But as we are we are, I will
• 1:04:29
Speaker 6: not say, mere, evil women, why must thou to day
• 1:04:34
Speaker 6: turn strange and make thee like some evil thing childish
• 1:04:38
Speaker 6: to meet my childish passioning. See I surrender and confess
• 1:04:45
Speaker 6: that then I had bad thoughts, but now have turned
• 1:04:48
Speaker 6: again and found my wiser mind. O, children, run quickly,
• 1:04:56
Speaker 6: come hither out into the sun.
• 1:04:58
Speaker 1: The children come from the house, followed by their attendant.
• 1:05:01
Speaker 6: And greet your father. Welcome him with us, and throw
• 1:05:06
Speaker 6: quite quite away, as mother does, your anger against one.
• 1:05:09
Speaker 6: So dear, our peace is made, and all the old
• 1:05:14
Speaker 6: bad war shall cease for ever. Go and take his hand.
• 1:05:19
Speaker 1: As the children go to Jason, she suddenly bursts into tears.
• 1:05:24
Speaker 1: The children quickly returned to her. She recovers herself smiling,
• 1:05:28
Speaker 1: and made her tears.
• 1:05:31
  Speaker 3: Me.
• 1:05:32
Speaker 6: I am full of hidden horrors. Shall it be a
• 1:05:35
Speaker 6: long time more my children than ye live to reach
• 1:05:38
Speaker 6: to me? Those dear, dear arms forgive. I am so
• 1:05:45
Speaker 6: ready with my tears to day, and full of dread.
• 1:05:49
Speaker 6: I sought to smooth away the long strife with your father,
• 1:05:53
Speaker 6: and lo, now I have all drowned with tears.
• 1:05:56
Speaker 16: This little brow he wipes the child's face or mine
• 1:06:02
  Speaker 16: eyes too.
• 1:06:03
Speaker 7: There stealeth a pale tear. Let the evil rest, o God,
• 1:06:07
Speaker 7: let it rest here woman.
• 1:06:09
Speaker 3: Indeed, I praise thee now, nor say ill of thine
• 1:06:12
Speaker 3: other hour tis nature's way. A woman needs must stir
• 1:06:16
Speaker 3: herself to wrath when work of marriage by so strange
• 1:06:19
Speaker 3: a path crosseth her lord. But thou thine heart dost
• 1:06:23
Speaker 3: wend the happier road. Thou hast seen ere quite the end?
• 1:06:27
Speaker 3: What choice must needs? Be stronger? Which to do shows
• 1:06:30
Speaker 3: a wise minded woman. And for you children, your father
• 1:06:34
Speaker 3: never has forgot your needs. If God would help him,
• 1:06:37
Speaker 3: he hath wrought a strong deliverance for your weakness. Yea,
• 1:06:41
Speaker 3: I think you with your brethren, Yet one day shall
• 1:06:44
Speaker 3: be the mightiest voices in this land. Do you grow
• 1:06:47
Speaker 3: tall and strong? Your father's hand to guideth all else?
• 1:06:51
Speaker 3: And whatso power divine hath always helped him. Ah may
• 1:06:55
Speaker 3: be mine to see you. Yet in manhood stern of brows,
• 1:06:58
Speaker 3: strong armed, said high, I owe those that hate me,
• 1:07:02
Speaker 3: how woman thy face is turned, thy cheek is swept
• 1:07:07
Speaker 3: with pallor of strange tears. Dost not accept gladly and
• 1:07:12
Speaker 3: of good will? My benisons tis nothing.
• 1:07:15
Speaker 6: Thinking of these little ones, I'll take heart.
• 1:07:18
Speaker 3: Then I will guard them from all.
• 1:07:20
Speaker 6: Ill I do take heart thy word, I never will
• 1:07:24
  Speaker 6: mistrust alas a woman's bosom bears, but woman's courage a
• 1:07:29
Speaker 6: thing born for tears?
• 1:07:31
Speaker 3: What ails thee? How too sore thou weepest there?
• 1:07:35
Speaker 6: I was their mother, when I heard thy prayer of
• 1:07:39
Speaker 6: long life for them? There swept over me a horror,
• 1:07:42
Speaker 6: wondering how these things shall be. But for the matter
• 1:07:47
Speaker 6: of my need that thou should speak with me. Part
• 1:07:50
Speaker 6: I have said, and now will finish. Seeing it is
• 1:07:54
Speaker 6: the King's behest to cast me out from Corinth Aye,
• 1:07:59
Speaker 6: and best far best for me, I know it, not
• 1:08:01
Speaker 6: to stay longer, to trouble thee and those who sway
• 1:08:03
Speaker 6: the realm, being held to all their house a foe behold.
• 1:08:09
Speaker 6: I spread my sails and meekly go to exile. But
• 1:08:13
Speaker 6: our children, could this land be still their home? Awhile
• 1:08:18
Speaker 6: could thine own hand but guide their boyhood? Seek the
• 1:08:23
Speaker 6: King and pray his pity that he bid thy children stay.
• 1:08:27
Speaker 3: He is hard to move, Yet truly twere well done.
• 1:08:31
Speaker 6: Bid her for thy sake, for a daughter's boon.
• 1:08:35
Speaker 3: Well thought her I can fashion to my mind.
• 1:08:38
Speaker 6: Surely she is a woman like her kind. Yet I
• 1:08:43
Speaker 6: will aid thee in thy labor. I will send her gifts,
• 1:08:46
Speaker 6: the fairest gifts that lie in the hands of men,
• 1:08:49
Speaker 6: things of the days of old, fine robings and a
• 1:08:52
Speaker 6: COCONet of gold by the boy's hands. Go quick, some handmaiden,
• 1:08:56
Speaker 6: and fetch the raiment.
• 1:08:58
Speaker 1: A handmaid goes into the ah.
• 1:09:01
Speaker 6: Her cup shall then be filled. Indeed, what more should
• 1:09:06
Speaker 6: woman crave? Being wed with thee the bravest of the brave,
• 1:09:10
Speaker 6: and girt with raiment, which of old, the sire of
• 1:09:13
Speaker 6: all my house the Sun gave steeped in fire to
• 1:09:18
Speaker 6: his own fiery race.
• 1:09:20
Speaker 1: The handmaid has returned, bearing the gifts.
• 1:09:23
Speaker 6: Come children, Lift with heed these caskets. Bear them as
• 1:09:28
Speaker 6: your gift to her, being bride and princess and of
• 1:09:31
Speaker 6: right blest. I think she will not hold them?
• 1:09:34
Speaker 3: Light fond woman, why wild empty? Thus thine hand of
• 1:09:38
Speaker 3: treasure did King Creon's castle stand in stint of raiment
• 1:09:42
Speaker 3: or instint of gold? Keep these and make no gift.
• 1:09:46
Speaker 3: For if she hold Jason of any worth at all,
• 1:09:48
Speaker 3: I swear chattels like these will not weigh more with her.
• 1:09:51
Speaker 6: Oh, chide me not, tis written gifts persuade the gods
• 1:09:55
Speaker 6: in heaven, and gold is stronger made than words, innumerable
• 1:09:59
Speaker 6: to bend men's w ways. Fortune is hers. God maketh
• 1:10:03
Speaker 6: greater her days young, and a crowned queen, and banishment
• 1:10:08
Speaker 6: for those two babes. I would not gold were spent,
• 1:10:13
Speaker 6: but life's blood. Ere that come, my children, go forth
• 1:10:19
Speaker 6: into those rich halls, and, bowing low, beseech your father's bride,
• 1:10:23
Speaker 6: whom I obey, Ye be not of her mercy, cast
• 1:10:27
Speaker 6: away exiled, and give the caskets above all, mark this
• 1:10:33
Speaker 6: to none but her to hold withal, and keep. Go quick,
• 1:10:39
Speaker 6: and let your mother know soon the good tiding that
• 1:10:41
Speaker 6: she longs for go.
• 1:10:44
Speaker 1: She goes quickly into the house. Jason, and the children,
• 1:10:48
Speaker 1: with their attendant depart.
• 1:10:50
Speaker 14: Now I have no hope more of the children's living,
• 1:10:54
  Speaker 14: no hope more.
• 1:10:56
Speaker 7: They are gone forth unto death. The bride she taketh
• 1:11:00
Speaker 7: the poison of their giving. She taketh the bound in
• 1:11:04
Speaker 7: gold and openeth, and the crown. The crown she lifteth
• 1:11:08
Speaker 7: about her brow, where the light brown curls are clustering.
• 1:11:13
  Speaker 7: No hope.
• 1:11:14
Speaker 8: Now, o, sweet and cloudy gleam of the garment's golden
• 1:11:19
Speaker 8: the robe it hath clasped her breast, and the crown
• 1:11:23
Speaker 8: her head. Then then she deketh the bride as a
• 1:11:28
Speaker 8: bride of olden story, that goeth pale to the kiss
• 1:11:33
Speaker 8: of the dead. For the ring hath closed, and the
• 1:11:37
Speaker 8: portion of death is there, and she flieth not, But
• 1:11:42
  Speaker 8: perisheth unaware.
• 1:11:44
Speaker 10: O bridegroom, bridegroom of the kiss? So cold art thou
• 1:11:50
Speaker 10: wed with princes? Art thou girt with gold? Who knowest
• 1:11:56
Speaker 10: not suing for thy child's undoing? And on her thou
• 1:12:01
Speaker 10: lovest for a doom untold? How art thou fallen from
• 1:12:06
Speaker 10: thy place of old.
• 1:12:07
Speaker 9: O mother Mother? What hast thou to reap when the
• 1:12:13
Speaker 9: harvest cometh between wake and sleep? For a heart unslaken,
• 1:12:20
Speaker 9: for a troth forsaken lo babes that call thee from
• 1:12:25
Speaker 9: a bloody deep, and thy love returns. Not get thee
• 1:12:31
  Speaker 9: forth and weep.
• 1:12:33
Speaker 1: Enter the attendant with the two children. Medea comes out
• 1:12:37
Speaker 1: from the house Mistress.
• 1:12:39
Speaker 4: These children from their banishment, are spared. The royal bride
• 1:12:44
Speaker 4: hath mildly bent her hand to accept thy gifts, and
• 1:12:48
Speaker 4: all is now peace for the children.
• 1:12:51
  Speaker 1: Ha.
• 1:12:52
Speaker 4: Why standest thou confounded when good fortune draweth near, Oh God,
• 1:12:58
Speaker 4: this chime's not with the news I bear.
• 1:13:01
Speaker 9: O God, have mercy.
• 1:13:02
Speaker 4: Is some word of wrath here hidden that I knew
• 1:13:05
Speaker 4: not of, And hath my hope to give THEE joy
• 1:13:09
  Speaker 4: so cheated me.
• 1:13:10
Speaker 6: Thou givest what thou givest? I blame not THEE.
• 1:13:13
Speaker 4: Thy brows are all o'er cast. Thine eyes are filled.
• 1:13:18
Speaker 6: For bitter need, old man. The gods have willed and
• 1:13:22
Speaker 6: my own evil mind that this should come.
• 1:13:25
Speaker 4: Take heart, thy sons, one day will bring THEE home home.
• 1:13:32
Speaker 6: I have others to send home woes.
• 1:13:35
Speaker 4: Me be patient. Many a mother before THEE hath parted
• 1:13:40
Speaker 4: from her children. We poor things of men, must needs
• 1:13:45
Speaker 4: endure what fortune brings.
• 1:13:48
Speaker 6: I will endure. Go thou within and lay already that
• 1:13:53
Speaker 6: my sons may need to day.
• 1:13:56
Speaker 16: The attendant goes into the house. O, children, children, mine,
• 1:14:02
Speaker 16: and you have found a land and home where, leaving
• 1:14:05
Speaker 16: me discrowned and desolate.
• 1:14:07
Speaker 6: Forever? Will you stay? Motherless children? And I go my
• 1:14:13
Speaker 6: way to other lands an exile. Ere you bring your
• 1:14:17
Speaker 6: fruit home. Ere I see you prospering, or know your brides,
• 1:14:22
Speaker 6: Or deck the bridal bed all flowers, and lift your
• 1:14:25
Speaker 6: torches over head. Oh cursed be mine own hard heart
• 1:14:33
Speaker 6: twas all in vain. Then that I reared you up,
• 1:14:36
Speaker 6: so tall and fair in vain, I bore you and
• 1:14:41
Speaker 6: was torn with those long, pitiless pains when you were born.
• 1:14:45
Speaker 6: Oh wondrous hopes my poor heart had in you, how
• 1:14:49
Speaker 6: you would tend me in mine age and do the
• 1:14:51
Speaker 6: shroud about me with your own dear hands. When I
• 1:14:55
Speaker 6: lay cold, blessed in all the lands that knew us,
• 1:15:00
Speaker 6: and that gentle thought is dead, You go, and I
• 1:15:05
Speaker 6: live on to each the bread of long years, to
• 1:15:09
Speaker 6: myself most full of pain, And never your dear eyes,
• 1:15:16
Speaker 6: never again shall see your mother far away being thrown
• 1:15:20
Speaker 6: to other shapes of life. My babes, my own, Why
• 1:15:26
Speaker 6: gaze ye so what is it that ye see? And
• 1:15:32
Speaker 6: laugh with that last laughter? Woe is me? What shall
• 1:15:37
Speaker 6: I do? Women? My strength is gone, gone like a dream,
• 1:15:44
Speaker 6: since once I looked upon those shining faces. I can
• 1:15:50
Speaker 6: do it not. Ah, good Bye to all the thoughts
• 1:15:55
Speaker 6: that burned so hot aforetime I will take them and
• 1:15:58
Speaker 6: hide them far far from men's eyes. Why should I
• 1:16:02
Speaker 6: seek a war so blind by these babe's wounds, to
• 1:16:06
Speaker 6: sting again their father's heart, and win myself a pain
• 1:16:09
Speaker 6: twice deeper. Never, never I forget. Henceforward all I labored for?
• 1:16:18
Speaker 6: And yet what is it with me? Would I be
• 1:16:22
Speaker 6: a thing mocked at and leave mine enemies to sting unsmitten.
• 1:16:28
Speaker 6: It must be O coward heart ever to harbor such
• 1:16:31
Speaker 6: soft words. Depart out of my sight, ye twain.
• 1:16:36
Speaker 1: The children go in.
• 1:16:38
Speaker 6: And they whose eyes shall hold its sin, to share
• 1:16:40
Speaker 6: my sacrifice on their heads. Be it My hand shall
• 1:16:45
Speaker 6: not swerve. Now ah ah, thou wrath within me? Do
• 1:16:54
Speaker 6: not thou do not down down, thou tortured thing, and
• 1:17:00
Speaker 6: spare my children. They will dwell with us I there
• 1:17:04
Speaker 6: far off and give thee peace. Too late, too late,
• 1:17:11
Speaker 6: by all Hell's living agonies of hate. They shall not
• 1:17:14
Speaker 6: take my little ones alive to make their mock with.
• 1:17:18
Speaker 6: How so e'er I strive, the thing is doomed. It
• 1:17:20
Speaker 6: shall not escape now from being ai. The crown is
• 1:17:24
Speaker 6: on the brow, and the robe girt, and in the
• 1:17:27
Speaker 6: robe that high queen dying. I know all, yet, seeing
• 1:17:34
Speaker 6: that I must go so long a journey, and these
• 1:17:37
Speaker 6: twain are longer yet and darker, I would fain speak
• 1:17:42
  Speaker 6: with them.
• 1:17:42
Speaker 1: Ere I go A handmaid brings to children.
• 1:17:46
Speaker 6: Out again, come, children, stand a little from me. There,
• 1:17:52
Speaker 6: reach out your hand, your right hand, so to mother,
• 1:17:58
  Speaker 6: and good bye.
• 1:18:00
Speaker 1: She has kept them hitherto at arm's length, but at
• 1:18:03
Speaker 1: a touch of their hands her resolution breaks down, and
• 1:18:06
Speaker 1: she gathers them passionately into her arms.
• 1:18:09
Speaker 6: Ho, darling head, oh darling mouth, and I and royal
• 1:18:17
Speaker 6: mean and bright, brave face is clear. May you be blessed?
• 1:18:22
Speaker 6: But not here? What here was yours your father stole,
• 1:18:28
Speaker 6: Oh God, the glow of cheek, aunt cheek, the tender touch,
• 1:18:34
Speaker 6: and oh sweet scent of childhood. Go go am, I
• 1:18:43
Speaker 6: blind mine eyes can see not when I look to
• 1:18:48
Speaker 6: find their places. I am broken by the wings of evil. Yea,
• 1:18:54
Speaker 6: I know to what bad things I go. But louder
• 1:18:58
Speaker 6: than all thought doth cry engunger, which maketh man's worst misery.
• 1:19:04
Speaker 1: She follows the children into the house.
• 1:19:06
Speaker 7: My thoughts have roamed the cloudy land, and heard a
• 1:19:10
Speaker 7: fierier music fall than woman's heart should stir withal. And
• 1:19:16
Speaker 7: yet some muse, majestical unknown, hath hold of woman's hand,
• 1:19:22
Speaker 7: seeking for wisdom. Not in all a feeble seed, a
• 1:19:28
Speaker 7: scattered band, Thou yet shalt find in lonely places, not
• 1:19:33
Speaker 7: dead amongst us, nor our faces turned alway from the
• 1:19:38
  Speaker 7: muses call.
• 1:19:39
Speaker 8: And thus my thought would speak, that she who ne'er
• 1:19:43
Speaker 8: hath borne a child, nor known, is nearer to felicity unlit.
• 1:19:49
Speaker 8: She goeth and alone, with little understanding what a child's
• 1:19:54
Speaker 8: touch means of joy or woe, and many toils. She
• 1:19:59
  Speaker 8: beareth not.
• 1:20:00
Speaker 10: But they within whose garden fair that gentle plant hath blown.
• 1:20:06
Speaker 10: They go deep, written all their days, with care to
• 1:20:10
Speaker 10: rear the children, to make fast their hold, to win
• 1:20:15
Speaker 10: them wealth, and then much darkness, if the seed at
• 1:20:20
Speaker 10: last bear fruit in good or evil men. And one
• 1:20:24
Speaker 10: thing at the end of all abideth that which all
• 1:20:28
Speaker 10: men dread. The wealth is one the limbs are bred
• 1:20:34
Speaker 10: to manhood, and the heart withal honest and lo where
• 1:20:40
Speaker 10: fortune smiled, some change, And what hath fallen?
• 1:20:45
Speaker 8: Hark tis death slowly to the dark, and in his arms, what.
• 1:20:52
  Speaker 5: Was thy child?
• 1:20:55
Speaker 9: What therefore, though it bring of gain to men whose
• 1:20:59
Speaker 9: cup stood full before? That God should send this one
• 1:21:04
Speaker 9: thing more of hunger and of dread. A door said
• 1:21:09
Speaker 9: wide to every wind of pain.
• 1:21:12
Speaker 1: Medea comes out alone from the.
• 1:21:14
Speaker 6: House friends, this long hour, I wait on Fortune's eyes
• 1:21:20
Speaker 6: and strain my senses in a hot surmise. What passeth
• 1:21:23
Speaker 6: on that hill even now there comes tis one of
• 1:21:28
Speaker 6: Jason's men. I trow his wild, perturbed breath, doth warrant
• 1:21:32
Speaker 6: me the tidings of some strange calamity.
• 1:21:35
Speaker 17: And a messenger, Oh, dire and ghastly deed, get thee away,
• 1:21:41
Speaker 17: medea fly, nor let behind thee stay one chariot's wing,
• 1:21:46
Speaker 17: one keel that sweeps the seas.

Speaker 6: And what hath chanced to cause such flights as these?
• 1:21:53
Speaker 11: The maiden Princess Liath and her sire the King, both
• 1:21:57
Speaker 11: murdered by thy poison.
• 1:21:59
Speaker 6: Fire, most happy tiding, which thy name prefers henceforth among
• 1:22:05
Speaker 6: my friends and well wishers, What.
• 1:22:07
Speaker 11: Sayest thou woman? Is thy mind within clear and not raving?
• 1:22:13
Speaker 11: Thou art found in sin, most bloody wrought against the
• 1:22:17
Speaker 11: King's high head, and laughest at the tail, and hast
• 1:22:21
  Speaker 11: no dread.
• 1:22:23
Speaker 6: I have words also that could answer well thy word.
• 1:22:27
Speaker 6: But take thine ease, good friend, and tell how died
• 1:22:31
Speaker 6: they hath? It been a very foul death? Prithee, that
• 1:22:36
Speaker 6: were comfort to my soul.
• 1:22:38
Speaker 11: When thy two children, hand in hand entwined, came with
• 1:22:43
Speaker 11: their father and passed on to find the new made
• 1:22:47
Speaker 11: bridal rooms, Oh we were glad, we thrawls, who ever
• 1:22:51
Speaker 11: loved thee well and had grief in thy grief and
• 1:22:55
Speaker 11: straight there passed a word from ear to ear that
• 1:22:59
Speaker 11: thou and thy false lord had poured peace offering upon
• 1:23:03
Speaker 11: Wrath foregone a right glad welcome gave we them, and
• 1:23:07
Speaker 11: one kissed the small hand, and one the shining hair.
• 1:23:12
Speaker 11: Myself for very joy, I followed where the women's rooms
• 1:23:16
Speaker 11: are there our mistress, she whom now we name so,
• 1:23:21
Speaker 11: thinking not to see thy little pair with glad and
• 1:23:24
Speaker 11: eager brows, sate waiting Jason. Then she saw, and slow
• 1:23:30
Speaker 11: shrouded her eyes, and backward turned again, sick that thy
• 1:23:35
Speaker 11: children should come near her. Then thy husband quick went
• 1:23:39
Speaker 11: forward to entreat the young maid's fitful wrath. Thou wilt
• 1:23:44
Speaker 11: not meet love's coming with unkindness, Nay, refrain thy suddenness,
• 1:23:50
Speaker 11: and turn thy face again, holding us friends all that
• 1:23:54
Speaker 11: to me are dear thine husband, and accept these robes
• 1:23:58
Speaker 11: they bear as gifts, and beg thy father to unmake
• 1:24:02
Speaker 11: his doom of exile on them for my sake. When
• 1:24:05
Speaker 11: once she saw the raiment, she could still her joy
• 1:24:09
Speaker 11: no more, but gave him all his will, and almost
• 1:24:13
Speaker 11: ere the father and the two children were gone from
• 1:24:15
Speaker 11: out the room, she drew the flower at garments forth
• 1:24:19
Speaker 11: and sate her down to her arraying bound the golden
• 1:24:23
Speaker 11: crown through her long curls, and in a mirror fair
• 1:24:28
Speaker 11: arranged their separate clusters. Smiling there at the dead self
• 1:24:33
Speaker 11: that faced her. Then aside, she pushed her seat and
• 1:24:37
Speaker 11: paced those chambers wide alone, her white foot poising delicately,
• 1:24:43
Speaker 11: so passing, joyful in those gifts was she, and many
• 1:24:47
Speaker 11: a time would pause, straight limbed and wheel her head
• 1:24:51
Speaker 11: to watch the long fold to her heel sweeping. And
• 1:24:55
Speaker 11: then came something strange. Her che cheek seemed pale and back,
• 1:25:02
Speaker 11: with crooked steps and weak groping of arms, she walked
• 1:25:06
Speaker 11: and scarcely found her old seat, that she fell not
• 1:25:10
Speaker 11: to the ground. Among the handmaids was a woman old
• 1:25:15
Speaker 11: and gray, who deemed, I think that pan had hold
• 1:25:18
Speaker 11: upon her or some spirit, and raised a keen awakening
• 1:25:22
Speaker 11: shout till through her lips was seen a white foam crawling,
• 1:25:28
Speaker 11: and her eyeballs back twisted, and all her face dead,
• 1:25:33
Speaker 11: pale for lack of life. And while that old dame
• 1:25:36
Speaker 11: called the cry, turned strangely to its opposite to die
• 1:25:41
Speaker 11: sobbing o swiftly. Then one woman flew to seek her
• 1:25:45
Speaker 11: father's rooms, one for the new bridegroom to tell the tale,
• 1:25:50
Speaker 11: And all the place was loud with hurrying feet, so
• 1:25:54
Speaker 11: long a space as a swift walker on a measured
• 1:25:57
Speaker 11: way would pace a furlong's course.
• 1:25:59
  Speaker 13: In there she.
• 1:26:00
Speaker 11: Lay speechless with vlid lids. Then wide her eyes she
• 1:26:06
Speaker 11: OpEd and wildly as she strove to rise, shrieked for
• 1:26:11
Speaker 11: two diverse waves. Upon her rolled of stabbing death. The
• 1:26:15
Speaker 11: carcanet of gold that gripped her brow was molten in
• 1:26:20
Speaker 11: a dire and wondrous river of devouring fire. And those
• 1:26:24
Speaker 11: fine robes, the gift thy children gave God's mercy. Everywhere
• 1:26:31
Speaker 11: did lap and lave the delicate flesh till up she
• 1:26:35
Speaker 11: sprang and fled a fiery pillar, shaking locks and head
• 1:26:39
Speaker 11: this way and that, seeking to cast the crown somewhere away.
• 1:26:45
Speaker 11: But like a thing nailed down, the burning gold held
• 1:26:49
Speaker 11: fast the anadem, and through her locks, the more she
• 1:26:53
Speaker 11: scattered them came fire, the fiercer, till to earth she
• 1:26:57
Speaker 11: fell a thing save to her sire, scarce nameable, and
• 1:27:02
Speaker 11: strove no more that cheek of royal mien, Where was
• 1:27:08
Speaker 11: it or the place where eyes had been? Only from
• 1:27:13
Speaker 11: crown and temples came faint, blood, shot through with fire.
• 1:27:18
Speaker 11: The very flesh it stood out from the bones as
• 1:27:22
Speaker 11: from a wounded pine, the gum starts where those gnawing
• 1:27:27
Speaker 11: poisons fine bit in the dark. A ghastly sight and
• 1:27:33
Speaker 11: touch the dead, we durst not we had seen too much.
• 1:27:39
Speaker 11: But that poor father, knowing not, had sped swift to
• 1:27:44
Speaker 11: his daughter's room, and there the dead lay at his feet.
• 1:27:48
Speaker 11: He knelt, and, groaning low, folded her in his arms,
• 1:27:53
  Speaker 11: and kiss'd her.
• 1:27:55
Speaker 13: O, unhappy child? What thing unnatural hath so hideously undone THEE?
• 1:28:02
Speaker 13: For what wrath of gods to make this old gray
• 1:28:07
Speaker 13: sepulcher childless of thee? Would God but lay me there
• 1:28:11
Speaker 13: to die with THEE my daughter?
• 1:28:13
Speaker 11: So he cried. But after when he stayed from tears
• 1:28:18
Speaker 11: and tried to uplift his old bent frame, lo in
• 1:28:23
Speaker 11: the folds of those fine robes it held as ivy holds,
• 1:28:29
Speaker 11: strangling among your laurel boughs. Oh, Then a ghastly struggle
• 1:28:34
Speaker 11: came again again upon his knee. He writh'd, but that
• 1:28:40
Speaker 11: dead breast clung still to his till wild, like one possess'd,
• 1:28:47
Speaker 11: he dragg'd himself half free, and lo, the live flesh parted,
• 1:28:52
Speaker 11: and he laid him down to strive no more with death,
• 1:28:57
Speaker 11: but perish, for the deep had risen above his soul.
• 1:29:02
Speaker 11: And there they sleep at last, the old proud father
• 1:29:07
Speaker 11: and the bride, even as his tears had craved it
• 1:29:11
Speaker 11: side by side. For thee, Oh, no word more thyself
• 1:29:17
Speaker 11: will know how best to baffle vengeance. Long ago I
• 1:29:22
Speaker 11: looked upon man's days and found a gray shadow, And
• 1:29:26
Speaker 11: this thing more, I surely say that those of all men,
• 1:29:30
Speaker 11: who are counted wise, strong wits, devisors of great policies,
• 1:29:36
Speaker 11: do pay the bitterest toll since life began. Hath therein
• 1:29:42
Speaker 11: God's eye stood one happy man. Fair days roll on
• 1:29:48
Speaker 11: and bear more gifts or less of fortune, But to
• 1:29:52
  Speaker 11: no man happiness.
• 1:29:54
Speaker 7: Exit messenger Wrath upon wrath, meseems this day shall fall
• 1:30:00
Speaker 7: from God on Jason.
• 1:30:02
Speaker 8: He hath earned it all, O, miserable maiden, all my
• 1:30:07
Speaker 8: heart is torn for thee so sudden to depart from
• 1:30:11
Speaker 8: thy king's chambers, and the light above to darkness, all
• 1:30:16
Speaker 8: forsake of Jason's love.
• 1:30:18
Speaker 6: Women, My mind is clear I go to slay my
• 1:30:23
Speaker 6: children with all speed, and then away from hence, not
• 1:30:27
Speaker 6: wait yet longer till they stand beneath another and an
• 1:30:30
Speaker 6: angrier hand to die. Yea, how soe'er I shield them?
• 1:30:34
Speaker 6: Die they must, And seeing that they must, tis, I
• 1:30:38
Speaker 6: shall slay them. I their mother, touched of none beside, Oh,
• 1:30:43
Speaker 6: up and get thine armor on my heart. Why longer
• 1:30:47
Speaker 6: tarry we to win our crown of dire, inevitable sin.
• 1:30:51
Speaker 6: Take up thy sword, O, poor right hand of mine,
• 1:30:55
Speaker 6: thy sword. Then onward to the thin drawn line where
• 1:30:58
Speaker 6: life turns agony, that there be not of softness now
• 1:31:03
Speaker 6: and keep thee from that thought born of thy flesh,
• 1:31:07
Speaker 6: Thine own beloved, Now for one brief day, forget thy children.
• 1:31:13
Speaker 6: Thou shalt weep hereafter, Oh thou slay them? Yet sweet
• 1:31:20
Speaker 6: were they? I am sore unfortunate.
• 1:31:24
Speaker 1: She goes into the house, Oh Earth, our mother, and
• 1:31:29
  Speaker 1: thou all sere.
• 1:31:31
Speaker 18: Arrowy crown of sunlight.
• 1:31:34
Speaker 10: Now all look down look upon one accursed ere Yet
• 1:31:41
Speaker 10: in blood sheep twine red hands, blood that is thine,
• 1:31:47
Speaker 10: O son, Save her first, she is thy daughter, still
• 1:31:53
Speaker 10: of thine own golden line. Save her, or shall man
• 1:31:59
Speaker 10: spill the life divine, Give peace, O fire that diest
• 1:32:05
Speaker 10: not send thy spell to stay her, yet to lift her.
• 1:32:10
Speaker 10: Afar afar, a torture changed spirit, a voice of hell,
• 1:32:17
Speaker 10: wrought of old wrongs and.
• 1:32:19
Speaker 9: War, alas for the mother's pain wasted, alas the dear
• 1:32:25
Speaker 9: life that was born in vain? Woman, What makest thou?
• 1:32:31
Speaker 9: Hear thou from beyond the gate where dim simple gaits
• 1:32:36
Speaker 9: clash in the dark blue seas, the shores where death thouth? Wait?
• 1:32:44
Speaker 9: Why hast thou taken on thee to make us desolate?
• 1:32:49
Speaker 9: This anger of misery and guilt of hate? For fierce
• 1:32:55
Speaker 9: are the smitings back of blood one's shed, where love
• 1:33:00
Speaker 9: hath been, God's wrath upon them that kill, And an
• 1:33:05
Speaker 9: anguished earth, and the wonder of the dead, haunting as music.
• 1:33:11
Speaker 16: Still a cry is heard within Hark did ye hear heard?
• 1:33:17
  Speaker 13: Ye?
• 1:33:17
  Speaker 8: The children's cry?
• 1:33:18
Speaker 7: Oh, miserable woman, Oh abhorred?
• 1:33:22
Speaker 6: What shall I do?
• 1:33:23
Speaker 7: What is it? Keep me fast from mother?
• 1:33:26
Speaker 1: I know nothing, brother, Oh, I think she means to
• 1:33:31
  Speaker 1: kill us.
• 1:33:32
Speaker 8: Let me go. I will help help and save them
• 1:33:37
  Speaker 8: at the last.
• 1:33:38
Speaker 7: Yes, in God's name, holp quickly ere we die.
• 1:33:43
Speaker 1: She has almost caught me now she has a sword.
• 1:33:47
Speaker 1: Many of the women are now beating at the barred
• 1:33:49
Speaker 1: door to get in. Others are standing apart.
• 1:33:53
Speaker 19: Thou stone, Thou sing o iron, wilt verily spill with
• 1:33:59
Speaker 19: thine hand that life, the vintage stored of thine own agony.
• 1:34:04
Speaker 10: A mother slew her babes in days of yore, one
• 1:34:09
Speaker 10: only one from dawn to eventide, I know God maddened
• 1:34:16
Speaker 10: whom the Queen of Heaven set frenzied, flying to the dark.
• 1:34:21
Speaker 10: And she cast her for sorrow to the wide salt sea,
• 1:34:26
Speaker 10: forth from those rooms of murder, unforgiven, wild footed from
• 1:34:31
Speaker 10: a white crag of the shore, and clasping still her children.
• 1:34:36
Speaker 10: Twain she died, O love of woman, charged with sorrow sore?
• 1:34:44
Speaker 10: What hast thou rote upon us? What beside resteth to
• 1:34:49
  Speaker 10: tremble for.
• 1:34:51
Speaker 1: And dea hurriedly Jason and attendants, Ye.
• 1:34:54
Speaker 3: Woman by this doorway, clustering speak is the doer of
• 1:34:57
Speaker 3: the ghastly thing. Yet here are fled? What hope is
• 1:35:01
Speaker 3: she of flight? Shall the deep yond to shield her,
• 1:35:04
Speaker 3: shall the heights and wings and hide her in the
• 1:35:06
Speaker 3: vaulted sky, to work red murder on her lord's and
• 1:35:09
Speaker 3: fly unrecommenced. But let her go. My care is but
• 1:35:13
Speaker 3: to save my children, not for her. Let them she wrong,
• 1:35:17
Speaker 3: for quite her as they may. I care not tis
• 1:35:19
Speaker 3: my sons. I must some way save ere the kinsmen
• 1:35:22
Speaker 3: of the dead, can win from them the payment of
• 1:35:24
  Speaker 3: their mother's sin.
• 1:35:25
Speaker 7: Unhappy man. Indeed, thou knowest not what dark place thou
• 1:35:30
  Speaker 7: art come to?
• 1:35:32
  Speaker 18: Else?
• 1:35:33
Speaker 7: God, what Jason? No word like these could fall from thee?
• 1:35:37
  Speaker 3: What is it?
• 1:35:38
  Speaker 8: Ha?
• 1:35:39
Speaker 3: The woman would kill me?
• 1:35:41
Speaker 7: Thy sons are dead, slain by their mother's hand.
• 1:35:45
Speaker 3: How not the children I scarce understand? Oh God, thou
• 1:35:53
  Speaker 3: hast broken me?
• 1:35:55
Speaker 7: Think of those twain as things once fair that ne'er
• 1:35:59
  Speaker 7: shall bloom again?
• 1:36:00
Speaker 3: Where did she murder them? In that old room?
• 1:36:04
Speaker 7: Open? And thou shalt see thy children's doom?
• 1:36:08
Speaker 3: O throws a loose me yonder bars, big warm speed,
• 1:36:13
Speaker 3: Then children joining at the door, And shall my two
• 1:36:16
Speaker 3: edge curse the children dead? The woman all this sword
• 1:36:22
  Speaker 3: upon her head.
• 1:36:23
Speaker 1: While the attendants are still battering at the door, madea
• 1:36:26
Speaker 1: appears on the roof, standing on a chariot of winged dragons,
• 1:36:29
Speaker 1: in which are the children's bodies?
• 1:36:32
Speaker 6: What make ye at my gates? Why batter ye with
• 1:36:35
Speaker 6: brazen bars, seeking the dead, and me who slew them peace,
• 1:36:41
Speaker 6: And thou, if aught of mine, thou needest speak, though
• 1:36:45
Speaker 6: never touch of thine shall scathe me more out of
• 1:36:49
Speaker 6: his firmament. My father's father, the high Sun, hath sent
• 1:36:53
Speaker 6: this that shall save me from mine enemy's rage.
• 1:36:57
Speaker 3: Thou living hate, thou life in every age of horrid blood.
• 1:37:02
Speaker 3: Red mother, who did kill my sons and make me
• 1:37:05
Speaker 3: is the dead, and still can stake the sunshine to
• 1:37:10
Speaker 3: thine eyes and smell the green earth, reeking for my
• 1:37:13
Speaker 3: dead of hell. I cursed thee now mine eyes couldn't
• 1:37:19
Speaker 3: see that then were blinded when from savagery of eastern chambers,
• 1:37:23
Speaker 3: from a cruel land to Greece and home I gathered
• 1:37:27
Speaker 3: in my head feet Thou incarnate curse would have betrayed
• 1:37:31
Speaker 3: her home, her father. Oh God, itly thy sins on me.
• 1:37:36
Speaker 3: I knew, I knew there lay a brother murdered on
• 1:37:39
Speaker 3: thy heart that day when thy first footstep fell on
• 1:37:42
Speaker 3: Argo's hull. Argo, my own, my swift and beautiful, That
• 1:37:48
Speaker 3: was her first beginning. Then a wife I made her
• 1:37:52
Speaker 3: in my house. She bought a life children, and Thou
• 1:37:57
Speaker 3: for love for chapering in men's arms. She has burden
• 1:38:00
Speaker 3: them a thing, not one of all the means of grace,
• 1:38:03
Speaker 3: not one if dreamed of whom I spurned, and for
• 1:38:07
Speaker 3: mine own choose thee a bride of hate to me
• 1:38:11
Speaker 3: and death, Tigris, dont woman beast of wilder breath and
• 1:38:16
Speaker 3: still a shrieking more than tusk can see enough, No
• 1:38:21
Speaker 3: scorn of mine can reach to thee. Such ironies o'er
• 1:38:25
Speaker 3: thy eyes out for my road, though cry, beginner replied,
• 1:38:30
Speaker 3: with children's blood, and let me weep alone the bitter
• 1:38:34
Speaker 3: tide that sweeping Jason's days. No gentle practice speak with more,
• 1:38:39
Speaker 3: no child to look upon? Who What's I reared? Ah, ah,
• 1:38:45
  Speaker 3: forever gone?
• 1:38:46
Speaker 6: An easy answer had I to this swell of speech.
• 1:38:50
Speaker 6: But zeus, our father knoweth well all I for thee
• 1:38:54
Speaker 6: half wrought, and thou for me. So let it rest.
• 1:38:59
Speaker 6: This thing was not to be, that thou shouldst live
• 1:39:02
Speaker 6: a merry life. My bed forgotten and my heart uncomforted. Thou,
• 1:39:07
Speaker 6: nor thy princess, nor the king that plann'd thy marriage.
• 1:39:11
Speaker 6: Drive Medeir from his land, and suffer not call me
• 1:39:15
Speaker 6: what thing thou please, Tigris or Skilla from the tuscan
• 1:39:19
Speaker 6: seas my claws have gripped thine heart and all things shine.
• 1:39:26
Speaker 3: Thou too, hast grief. Thy pain is fierce as mine.
• 1:39:31
Speaker 6: I love the pain, so thou shalt laugh no more.
• 1:39:35
Speaker 3: Oh what a womb of sin my children bore sons?
• 1:39:38
Speaker 6: Did ye perish for your father's shame?
• 1:39:41
Speaker 3: How it was not my Heaven murdered.
• 1:39:43
Speaker 6: Them twas thy false wooings, twas thy trampling pride.
• 1:39:48
Speaker 3: Thou hast sentence, thy lust and love they.

Speaker 6: Died, and love to women a slight thing.
• 1:39:53
Speaker 3: Should be to women pure all thy thou life to thee.
• 1:39:58
Speaker 6: Think of thy torment. They are dead. They are dead.
• 1:40:03
Speaker 3: No quick, great God, quick curses round thy head.
• 1:40:07
Speaker 6: The gods know who began this work of woe.
• 1:40:11
Speaker 3: Thy heart and all its loathliness.
• 1:40:13
Speaker 6: They know loathe on But oh thy voice, it hurts me, sore.
• 1:40:21
Speaker 3: Hi, and thine me would stir me? Then no more?
• 1:40:25
Speaker 6: How show me? But the way tis this I crave.
• 1:40:29
Speaker 3: Give me the dead to weep and make their grave.
• 1:40:33
Speaker 6: Never myself will lay them in a still green sepulcher,
• 1:40:37
Speaker 6: where hera by the hill hath precinct holy, that no
• 1:40:41
Speaker 6: angry men may break their graves. And cast them forth
• 1:40:44
Speaker 6: again to evil. So I lay on all this shore
• 1:40:48
Speaker 6: of Corinth, the high feast for evermore and right to
• 1:40:52
Speaker 6: purge them yearly of the stain of this poor blood.
• 1:40:56
Speaker 6: And I to palace plain. I go to dwell beside
