- 0:27Welcome back listeners to Sandman's Stories Presents, a

- 0:34I'm your host, Dustin. If you want more Sandman, I have
- 0:38extra stories that are too spicy for the main feed available on
- 0:40my Patreon. You can even join at the free
- 0:43tier and get everything. Today we are back in the book of
- 0:47Louisiana folk tales written down by Elsie Fortier.
- 0:51In the first story, we learn about how eavesdropping can lead
- 0:53to romance, in the second we see what happens when you run away
- 0:58from home, and in the final story, we see how families take
- 1:02care of each other. OK, let's begin the statue of
- 1:08Saint Anthony. In a small town there lived a
- 1:12Shoemaker who had a beautiful daughter.
- 1:15One day she saw a young man enter the house next to hers,
- 1:19and soon she fell in love with him.
- 1:22She asked the old cook what she could do to make this young man
- 1:24fall in love with her. The old woman told her to pray
- 1:27to Saint Anthony, so she did, but to little effect.
- 1:33Perhaps he is deaf, said the cook.
- 1:36Let's make a hole in his ears. When they were trying to pour a
- 1:41hole in the ears of the wooden statue, the young man's servant
- 1:44came out into the shop. He asked the two women what they
- 1:48were doing. They said they wanted Saint
- 1:50Anthony to hear their prayer. The servant made holes in the
- 1:54ears of the statue and waited outside the door to hear what
- 1:57the young girl was so anxious to ask for.
- 2:00As soon as he heard that the young girl was asking Saint
- 2:03Anthony to obtain the love of her neighbor for herself, he ran
- 2:07to his master and related the story.
- 2:10The latter felt so much flattered by the love of the
- 2:12young beautiful girl that he fell in love with her and in
- 2:15turn married her. The end.
- 2:40OK and story #2 The little boys and the giants.
- 2:47Once Upon a time there were two little boys who lived in a house
- 2:49not far from a river. Their parents had forbidden them
- 2:53to ever go near the river, but one day they ran away, and
- 2:58taking a skiff which was in the river, they rode and rode.
- 3:04I believe that they rode for 1,000,000 miles.
- 3:09When night came they were very much afraid, and they did not
- 3:12know where to go. While they were looking at a
- 3:14light off in the distance, some giants came to catch them.
- 3:19They climbed up a tree, but the giants merely shook the tree,
- 3:22and the poor boys fell down. They were carried to the House
- 3:27of the giants, where they found many other little boys.
- 3:31They were all fed on milk and harmony so that they might grow
- 3:34fat, and every day a few of the little boys were cooked and
- 3:38eaten by the giants. Not far from the House of the
- 3:42giants lived an old woman who was a witch.
- 3:47One day the father of the two little boys who had run away,
- 3:49came to the old woman's house with his friends and asked her
- 3:52if she had seen his boys. She replied that they were in a
- 3:56house nearby, in front of the door of which was a Pebble not
- 3:59larger than small marble. The men went to the house and
- 4:03found out that the Pebble had become a rock as big as a
- 4:06mountain. They had a lot of trouble
- 4:08pushing aside the rock and opening the door, but at last
- 4:13they entered the house, killed the giants, and brought back
- 4:15their little boys. The end.
- 4:40OK and the third story, the men who became birds.
- 4:47Once Upon a time there was a lady who had 12 children, 11
- 4:51boys and one girl. The poor lady died and her
- 4:55husband married again. His second wife was a witch who
- 4:59was very bad in the daytime. She changed the 11 boys into
- 5:04birds and allowed them to take their human forms only at night.
- 5:09As for the girl, she changed her into one of the black servants
- 5:12that worked at the house. Her father did not recognize the
- 5:16New Girl and so we sent her out of the house.
- 5:20The witch treated her husband's children in that way because she
- 5:23wanted him to leave his money to her own children.
- 5:27When the poor girl was kicked out of her father's house, she
- 5:29went to see her brothers and told them what had happened to
- 5:32her. They said that the next morning
- 5:36they would take her to another country.
- 5:39They made a bed with leaves, and the next day, when they were
- 5:41birds again, each one took a hold of the bed in his beak, and
- 5:45they carried their sister far away into another country.
- 5:48They placed her in a forest and built a Pretty Little Hut for
- 5:51her. One day an old witch passed by
- 5:55the Hut, and when she saw the young girl she asked her what
- 5:58she was doing there. The poor girl related her story
- 6:01and the witch told her that she could tell her how to turn her
- 6:04brothers into men all the time. She must make a shirt for each
- 6:08of her brothers and not to sew the shirts, but to weave them
- 6:12and to not speak until the shirts were ready.
- 6:17It took her a long time to do the work and when she was almost
- 6:20done, just one shirt was missing one sleeve.
- 6:25Her stepmother found out where she was and had her arrested as
- 6:28a witch. They were taking her to prison
- 6:31when the 11 brothers flew around the cart.
- 6:34She immediately threw the shirts over them and they became men
- 6:37again and rescued their sister. As one of the shirts only had
- 6:41one sleeve. The brother who received that
- 6:44shirt had one bird wing for the rest of his life.
- 6:48The end. Oh OK.
- 7:11I like the romance in the first one.
- 7:13There are a lot of relics and Saints in such New Orleans and
- 7:16sometimes the person needing to hear your prayer is sitting
- 7:18close by. Good communication saves
- 7:22relationships. And the second story had a bit
- 7:26of a Hansel and Gretel to it. It's dangerous to run away from
- 7:29home and especially in a swamp. And the final story was a nice
- 7:32bit of family help. In the original the witch turns
- 7:35the daughter into a black woman and it didn't seem to further
- 7:38the story at all so I changed it up right quick.
- 7:42I like these stories but this book is almost hold out.
- 7:45In the meantime, I'll look for something else from the
- 7:48Caribbean to fill the gap. And the podcast Shout Out is to
- 7:51the History of China hosted. By Chris.
- 7:53This is an amazing overview of Chinese history by a guy who
- 7:57really knows his stuff. He moved to China about the same
- 8:00time that I moved to Korea, but he was already fluent in
- 8:03Mandarin. This is a wonderful history
- 8:05podcast and it will give you a great perspective on Chinese
- 8:08culture through history. And if you love his show as much
- 8:11as I do, go and give him a like a rating and a review and the
- 8:17listener shout out. According to Google, Luzanne is
- 8:20a city on Lake Geneva in the French speaking region of Vogue
- 8:23Switzerland. It's home to the International
- 8:26Olympic Committee headquarters, as well as the Olympic Museum
- 8:29and Lakeshore Olympic Park. Away from the lake, the hilly
- 8:33old city has a medieval shop, line streets and a 12th century
- 8:37Gothic cathedral with an ornate facade.
- 8:40The 19th century Palais de Romine houses fine art and
- 8:43science museums, and it looks like a nice place, but it might
- 8:49be a bit pricey to visit. And so to my listener in
- 8:52Louisiana, I say merci Y Bonnie. Thank you.
- 8:57And good night.
