Latest / Traveler’s Tales / Saved by Grace: The Hymn of Crosby and Moody
Transcript
- 0:00Aging saints often speak about heaven differently than the rest of us.
- 0:17The older they grow, the more real eternity becomes.
- 0:21The things of this world begin to lose their grip, and the promises of God shine brighter
- 0:26than ever before.
- 0:28God's Spirit fills every line of Fanny Crosby's beloved hymn, Saved by Grace.
- 0:34These were not merely lyrics written for a congregation to sing.
- 0:39They were the personal reflections of a woman preparing to meet her Savior, and longing
- 0:44for the moment when faith would finally become sight.
- 0:48This is Greg Dowdy, and you are listening to Traveler's Tales, brought to you by Enjoying
- 0:53the Journey.
- 0:54Today we step into the story behind one of the most hope-filled hymns ever written, a
- 0:59song born from grace, sustained by faith, and fixed upon the promise of seeing Jesus
- 1:07Christ face-to-face.
- 1:09Imagine a blind woman in her later years, quietly slipping away from a crowded conference
- 1:15into a small adjoining room.
- 1:17While others talked and mingled, she sat alone, meditating on heaven, on Christ, and
- 1:23on the grace that had carried her through every dark valley in life.
- 1:28In less than an hour, she emerges with words that would one day comfort countless believers
- 1:34around the world.
- 1:35That woman was Fanny Crosby.
- 1:38In the 1800s, three individuals influenced gospel music more than almost anyone else
- 1:44– Dwight Moody, Iris Sankey, and Fanny Crosby.
- 1:49Though blind from infancy, Crosby saw spiritual realities more clearly than many people with
- 1:56perfect eyesight.
- 1:58Her hymns were saturated with Scripture, hope, and confidence in Christ.
- 2:04One day, music publisher L. H. Bigelow approached her with a request to write a hymn centered
- 2:11on the grace of God.
- 2:12Immediately, Fanny stepped into another room and began writing, and in a short time she
- 2:18returned with these unforgettable words,
- 2:21Someday the silver cord will break, and I no more as now shall sing, but oh the joy
- 2:27when I shall wake within the palace of the King.
- 2:32Those words were deeply personal to her.
- 2:35In fact, the hymn was never intended for publication.
- 2:40Fanny called it her soul's poem.
- 2:43She tucked it away, using it only occasionally when speaking in meetings because it brought
- 2:48such comfort to her own heart during difficult days.
- 2:53Years later, while attending a conference in Northfield, Massachusetts, the great evangelist
- 2:58D.L. Moody unexpectedly asked Fanny to give a testimony.
- 3:02Reluctantly, she stood before the audience and said,
- 3:06There is one hymn I have written which has never been published.
- 3:10Sometimes when I am troubled, I repeat it to myself, for it brings comfort to my heart.
- 3:15Then, for the very first time in public, she recited the words of Saved by Grace.
- 3:23Unknown to Fanny, a newspaper reporter from London was present that evening.
- 3:28He carried the poem back to England and published it without her knowledge.
- 3:33Shortly afterward, the words were placed into the hands of composer George C. Stebbins,
- 3:39who set them to music.
- 3:41The hymn quickly spread across the world and became one of Moody's favorite songs.
- 3:47But what makes this hymn so powerful is not merely its history.
- 3:51It is the hope behind it.
- 3:53If Fanny Crosby understood something, many believers forget.
- 3:57This world is not our final home.
- 4:01Though she faced blindness, hardship, and suffering, she lived with her eyes fixed
- 4:06on eternity.
- 4:08Notice how every verse points forward, someday, someday, someday.
- 4:16Her confidence was not rooted in earthly comfort, but in the promise of seeing Jesus Christ
- 4:21face to face.
- 4:23What a challenge that is for us today.
- 4:25We live in a world obsessed with the temporary.
- 4:29People pour their lives into possessions that rust, careers that fade, pleasures that
- 4:35disappoint, and achievements that will one day be forgotten.
- 4:40Yet the child of God possesses something eternal.
- 4:44Because of the grace of God, there is coming a day when faith will become sight.
- 4:49Fanny Crosby often said, When I get to heaven, the first face that shall ever gladden my
- 4:55sight will be that of my Savior.
- 4:58Think about it.
- 4:59A woman who had never seen a sunrise, never looked upon the face of a loved one, never
- 5:05gazed upon the beauty of creation, lived with joyful anticipation because she knew the very
- 5:12first face she would ever see would be the Lord Jesus.
- 5:17That is the hope of every believer.
- 5:20This hymn also reminds us that grace is not only what saves us, it is what sustains us.
- 5:27Ephesians 2.8.9 declares, For by grace are you saved through faith.
- 5:32From beginning to end, the Christian life is a testimony of grace.
- 5:37We are saved by grace, strengthened by grace, carried by grace, and one day we will stand
- 5:45in heaven because of God's grace alone.
- 5:49And because that day is coming, we ought to live differently now.
- 5:54Fanny wrote, Someday till then I'll watch and wait, my lamp all trimmed and burning
- 6:00bright.
- 6:01That's more than just poetic language.
- 6:03That is a call to readiness.
- 6:06The Christian life is not passive waiting, it's faithful preparation.
- 6:11We are to live every day with eternity in view.
- 6:14Our lamps ought to be burning brightly through holy living, faithful service, joyful worship,
- 6:20and steadfast obedience.
- 6:22One day the silver cord will break for every one of us.
- 6:26Life is fragile.
- 6:28Time is short.
- 6:29But for the believer, death is not the end, it is the doorway into the presence of the
- 6:35King.
- 6:36And on that glorious day, every child of God will join Fanny Crosby in the greatest testimony
- 6:41heaven has ever heard, saved by grace.
