- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel with proppers for Carmelite churches. July 16 in the year of our Lord 2026.
- 0:22According to a pious tradition authorized by the liturgy, on the day of Pentecost, a number of men who had walked in the footsteps of the holy prophets Elijah and Elisha, and whom John the Baptist had prepared for the advent of Jesus, embraced the Christian faith. And before all others, erected a church to the blessed virgin on Mount Carmel at the very spot where Elijah had seen a cloud arise, a figure of the fecundity of the mother of God.
- 1:01They were called brethren of blessed Mary of Mount Carmel. These religious came to Europe in the thirteenth century and in December, Innocent the fourth gave his approbation to their rule under the generalship of Simon Stock. On 07/16/1251, Mary appeared to this fervent servant and placed in his hands the habit which was to be their distinctive sign. Innocent IV blessed this habit and attached to it many privileges not only for the members of the order but also for those who entered the confraternity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. By wearing the scapular which is in a smaller form than that of the Carmelite Fathers, they participate in all their merits and may hope to obtain through the Virgin a prompt delivery from purgatory if they have faithfully observed abstinence, chastity according to their state, and said the prayers prescribed by John the twenty second in Tabool Sabatina published on 03/03/1322.
- 2:23The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, at first celebrated only in the churches of the order, was extended to all Christendom by Benedict XIII in the year of our Lord 1726. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy ghost. Amen. The introit. How graceful is thy carriage, oh, of the prince.
- 3:02Thy lips are a dropping honeycomb, and the smell of thy garments is as the smell of frankincense. Sing ye to the Lord a new canticle, for he hath done wonderful things. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. How graceful is thy carriage, o daughter of the prince.
- 3:36Thy lips are a dropping honeycomb, and the smell of thy garments is as the smell of frankincense. The Collect. Let us pray. Lord God, who hast honored the order of Carmel with the special title of thy most blessed mother Mary ever virgin, Mercifully grant that we who celebrate her commemoration this very day with solemn devotion may be shielded by her protection and deserve to come to everlasting joys who liveth and reigneth with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 4:29A lesson from the third book of Kings. Elijah climbed the heights of Mount Carmel and there sat his face bowed to the ground between his knees. And he bade his servant go to the hilltop and look out seawards. So he went and looked, but came back with word that he had seen nothing. Seven times he must go back on the same errand.
- 5:02And at the seventh time, a little cloud showed no bigger than a man's footprint rising up out of the sea. Go back, Elijah said, and bid Ahab mount his chariot and return home before the rain overtakes him. This way and that he turned, and now the whole sky was dark, and clouds came, and a wind with the clouds, and a great storm of rain began. The gradual, Thou art the glory of Jerusalem. Thou art the joy of Israel.
- 5:54Thou art the honor of our people. Thy head is like Carmel, in the hairs of thy head as the purple of the king bound in the channels. Alleluia. Alleluia. The glory of Libanus is given to her, the beauty of Carmel and Sauron.
- 6:17Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John. At that time, mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene had taken their stand beside the cross of Jesus. And Jesus, seeing his mother there and the disciple too whom he loved standing by said to his mother, Woman, behold thy son. Then he said to the disciple, Behold thy mother.
- 7:09And from that hour the disciple took her into his own keeping. The Offeratory The gate of the inner court that looketh toward the east shall be shut the six days, but on the Sabbath day it shall be opened. The secret: May Thy abundance of mercy pardon us, O Lord, that through the sacred gifts which we reverently offer to Thee, we may be able to practice grateful service to the Most Blessed Mother of thy son through the same Jesus Christ, thy son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The Preface of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
- 8:15It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to thee, o holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God, who through the rising cloud ascending from the sea, did wonderfully prefigure to the blessed prophet Elijah, the immaculate Virgin Mary, and wished devotion to be paid to her by the children of the prophets, whom moreover the blessed virgin this very day received for the children of her love through the holy scapular. Mayest thou vouch safe to bring them clothed in the same and dutifully dying to self, the more quickly to thy holy mountain. And therefore with angels and archangels, with thrones and dominions, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing a hymn to thy glory evermore saying, holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 9:43Hosanna in the highest. The communion. I brought you into the land of Carmel to eat the fruit in the best things thereof. The post communion. Let us pray.
- 10:07We beseech thee, O Lord, that the solemn commemoration of the most blessed Virgin Mary, thy mother, may always be to us an occasion of joy, that it may shed upon us the gladness of her protection and the security of peace and make us pleasing to thee, who livest and reignest with the father and the holy ghost through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
- 10:58Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Saint Simon Stark, pray for us.
