- 0:00Speaker 1: Time out for back to the basics in healthcare with
- 0:02Speaker 1: Balanced Life Chiropractic, we have doctor Harley with that's hello.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Doctor Harley, Hey John, how are you today? I'm good.
- 0:07Speaker 1: We're going to talk about posture. And this is one
- 0:09Speaker 1: of those things that you know, everybody's a little different,
- 0:11Speaker 1: but there's probably is it right and wrong or is
- 0:14Speaker 1: there like shades of gray when it comes to good posture.
- 0:17Speaker 2: I mean, the better your posture is, the happier your
- 0:20Speaker 2: spine is going to be. I feel like that's kind
- 0:22Speaker 2: of so like, yeah, you could have like my postures whatever,
- 0:24Speaker 2: but then you wonder why you have, you know, aches
- 0:27Speaker 2: pains in various places. You know, I always walk into
- 0:30Speaker 2: a room if I'm doing like a talk or meeting people,
- 0:32Speaker 2: is it, oh yeah, my chiropractor, Everyone immediately sits up streams.
- 0:35Speaker 2: I have a nice, good posture, that's great and all,
- 0:38Speaker 2: But how long does it take for them to go
- 0:39Speaker 2: back to they're not.
- 0:40Speaker 1: So great posture, a little slouchy.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Right, you know, And you can think of like, oh,
- 0:45Speaker 2: a good posture, But what's happening when you're not consciously
- 0:49Speaker 2: thinking of your posture? You know, people driving to work
- 0:52Speaker 2: right now, how's your postures. Loo while you're driving your car,
- 0:54Speaker 2: are you lean into one side or you got both
- 0:57Speaker 2: hands on the steering wheel, you know, leaning forward, really
- 1:00Speaker 2: angry looking you know, you know, yeah, and check yourself
- 1:03Speaker 2: right now. I kind of think your posture is like, oh,
- 1:05Speaker 2: that's probably why. And the longer your commute is and
- 1:07Speaker 2: the worse your posture is, you know, you probably wonder
- 1:10Speaker 2: why you have a neck pain or back pain by
- 1:12Speaker 2: the time you get to work or by the time
- 1:13Speaker 2: you go home.
- 1:14Speaker 1: I heard posture used as one of the weirdest compliments
- 1:17Speaker 1: for somebody. There was a person who was at a
- 1:20Speaker 1: comedy event for the very first time. They tried to
- 1:21Speaker 1: do comedy and it didn't go well. But then afterwards
- 1:24Speaker 1: I was like, he was he was kind of fine,
- 1:26Speaker 1: and the guy said he had excellent posture. I'm like that,
- 1:29Speaker 1: that's all you have to say, he had excellent posture.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I'm like, well, at least he's got that.
- 1:33Speaker 2: I mean, do you never just look around look at
- 1:34Speaker 2: people when you're out shopping or people watching, like, wow,
- 1:38Speaker 2: they really bed posture. I mean I see that a lot. Obviously,
- 1:41Speaker 2: you have a chiropractor set see posture all day every day,
- 1:44Speaker 2: and there's those people that like their heads so crane
- 1:46Speaker 2: from like, how next neck? How does their neck not her?
- 1:49Speaker 2: You know, they're standing up, they're standing up straight, you know,
- 1:51Speaker 2: air quotes, but their heads so far forward. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Is that more prevalent now than before because of people
- 1:57Speaker 1: texting and on their social media and on their phones
- 2:00Speaker 1: and oh definitely.
- 2:01Speaker 2: That's how we call it tech neck or student neck.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I mean before it was called military neck because you know,
- 2:06Speaker 2: you know, military people have to stand up, you know,
- 2:09Speaker 2: you know, ramrod straight kind of things. We see, you know,
- 2:11Speaker 2: a loss of a curve in their neck too from that.
- 2:14Speaker 2: But I mean even before technology, you know, magazines, books, newspapers,
- 2:18Speaker 2: you know, there's other things, but we weren't as like
- 2:21Speaker 2: glued to those things like we are to our phones
- 2:24Speaker 2: or technology where you can waste two hours and not
- 2:26Speaker 2: even have moved. Yeah, because you're just so ingrained with
- 2:30Speaker 2: whatever you're watching on your screen. And it's that prolonged
- 2:34Speaker 2: amount of bad posture that really starts to add up. Sure,
- 2:37Speaker 2: if you catch yourself always doing it for five minutes, Okay,
- 2:39Speaker 2: I'm back to good posture. And we're doing that most
- 2:41Speaker 2: of the time, not so bad. But if you're like
- 2:43Speaker 2: bad posture over you know, fifty percent of the day,
- 2:47Speaker 2: and like I said, you fix it. You're like, oh God,
- 2:49Speaker 2: but how long's it takes before you go back to
- 2:51Speaker 2: that slouching bad posture?
- 2:53Speaker 1: What are some good posture tips? If I'm sitting at
- 2:55Speaker 1: a desk all day, is there something I could do
- 2:57Speaker 1: to have better posture while I'm sitting at that desk
- 2:59Speaker 1: all day?
- 3:00Speaker 2: Definitely, Like you know, check your desk set up. Is
- 3:02Speaker 2: your screen up at eye level so you're not having
- 3:05Speaker 2: to look up or look down at your screen? Are
- 3:08Speaker 2: your feet flat on the floor when you're sitting on
- 3:10Speaker 2: your chair, or if you're a little bit shorter, are
- 3:12Speaker 2: your feet hanging and dangling? If that's the case, you know,
- 3:14Speaker 2: getting like a stool or something you can keep your
- 3:16Speaker 2: feet flat on. Or if you're really tall, do you
- 3:20Speaker 2: feel like your hips are more or less than a
- 3:23Speaker 2: ninety degree angle? Always look at ninety degree angles is
- 3:25Speaker 2: kind of the ideal. When you're sitting hips at ninety degrees,
- 3:28Speaker 2: knees at ninety degrees, elbows at ninety degrees, then you're
- 3:32Speaker 2: not over exerting under exerting.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Some days, it feels like our studios at ninety degrees.
- 3:36Speaker 1: But I'm talking about temperatuation. And I sit in a
- 3:39Speaker 1: bean bag?
- 3:39Speaker 2: Is that bad? That sucks? Kidding? I mean, if you're
- 3:42Speaker 2: slouching in it, not so great. I had the conversation
- 3:44Speaker 2: with the patient earlier. We're talking about posture because they're
- 3:46Speaker 2: like when I sit at home, if I was like, well,
- 3:48Speaker 2: are you sitting in a chair? Are you sitting on
- 3:50Speaker 2: the couch? You know, either one of those things. You know,
- 3:53Speaker 2: if you're like kind of slouching into it and then
- 3:55Speaker 2: you get up and you wonder why your back hurts,
- 3:57Speaker 2: it's because you lose that curve when you are slouching
- 3:59Speaker 2: into your couch. Or if it feels like your armchair
- 4:02Speaker 2: or couch is like eating you, it probably needs more cushion.
- 4:05Speaker 1: But what if you're reclining, you're kicked back and relying.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Is that better or is that worse?
- 4:09Speaker 2: It again depends if you feel like your back's like,
- 4:12Speaker 2: you know, if you're keeping a nice, good like curve
- 4:16Speaker 2: back like basically your belly sticking out, your butt's kind
- 4:18Speaker 2: of sticking back like, that's you know, kind of the
- 4:21Speaker 2: ideal lumbar curve. So if you feel like you're slouching inward,
- 4:25Speaker 2: that's not so good.
- 4:26Speaker 1: So when I reclined back, I got a ledg ra
- 4:28Speaker 1: here to put popcorn on. Is that bad? That has
- 4:31Speaker 1: more to do with my front than my back?
- 4:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean probably more of an issue.
- 4:36Speaker 1: So I suppose when somebody is overweight, that probably makes
- 4:39Speaker 1: a difference in their posture as well, doesn't it.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Right, it's a lot more weight for your joints to
- 4:43Speaker 2: have to handle and carry. I actually just had a
- 4:46Speaker 2: follow up with a patient. I hadn't seen them in
- 4:48Speaker 2: over a year, and they lost over one hundred pounds.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Oh wow.
- 4:51Speaker 2: And when we took their x rays we could see
- 4:54Speaker 2: how much that weight loss helped her spine. That is
- 4:57Speaker 2: amazing because like before her lumbar curve, it was like
- 5:00Speaker 2: a super tight see because like you know, all that
- 5:02Speaker 2: belly weight was pulling her forward and then you're trying
- 5:04Speaker 2: to compensate pulling backwards. And now without all of that
- 5:07Speaker 2: extra weight, she's standing up a lot taller.
- 5:09Speaker 1: If somebody listening has gone I could use some help,
- 5:11Speaker 1: whether it's with your posture or maybe it's with something else.
- 5:14Speaker 1: I'd just have a pain in my back or a
- 5:15Speaker 1: pain in my neck, or I've got a pain somewhere
- 5:17Speaker 1: that Chiropractic might help. How do they connect with you?
