Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to The Daily Show. I'm Michael Kosta. We've got
- 0:03Speaker 1: so much to talk about tonight. Hell yeah! Hell yeah!
- 0:08Speaker 2: Trump gets ghosted by his friends. The best player in
- 0:10Speaker 2: the NFL doesn't even exist. And Fox News uncorks a
- 0:14Speaker 2: 25-year age bottle of Islamophobia.
- 0:17Speaker 1: So let's get into the headlines.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Let's start with the big event that finally kicked off tonight.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Fans from across the country filled the stands to cheer
- 0:31Speaker 2: on big, sweaty men with brain problems at Trump's midterm
- 0:36Speaker 2: convention in Dallas. We'll have more coverage tomorrow, so you
- 0:41Speaker 2: don't want to miss it. Everyone's gonna be there, and
- 0:44Speaker 2: I mean everyone. Are you going to the midterm convention?
- 0:47Speaker 1: Uh, no. I'm gonna be in my district. Okay, okay, fine, okay, fine.
- 0:51Speaker 2: That guy's not gonna be there, but everyone else is going.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Are you planning to go to the Republican convention next week?
- 0:57Speaker 1: I'm planning to be in my district.
- 0:59Speaker 3: I have to be in the district because I have events.
- 1:02Speaker 4: I'll be in the district, traveling across the district.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Damn it.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Does everyone have a district nowadays? Okay, fine, they're out too,
- 1:10Speaker 2: but it's not like everyone's campaigning. At least the rest
- 1:13Speaker 2: of the GOP can go.
- 1:15Speaker 3: I want to get there, but I've got a few things,
- 1:17Speaker 3: and my son's playing high school football.
- 1:19Speaker 1: And I promised him I would not miss any of
- 1:20Speaker 1: his games.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, a classic midweek high school football game.
- 1:26Speaker 1: That's why they call it Wednesday Night Lights, baby. Clear eyes,
- 1:30Speaker 1: full hearts, can't go. Okay, that guy's out, but everyone else...
- 1:36Speaker 1: My son's getting married in Greece. Destination wedding, so I
- 1:39Speaker 1: have a good excuse, right? Son, I need you to
- 1:45Speaker 1: get married in Greece this week. I know you don't
- 1:48Speaker 1: love her, but this is important.
- 1:52Speaker 2: But don't worry, everyone else is going that didn't have
- 1:55Speaker 2: stuff planned.
- 1:56Speaker 1: I had stuff already planned in my congressional district.
- 2:03Speaker 2: I didn't know stuff was a political term. I thought
- 2:06Speaker 2: it was just what I told my wife what I
- 2:08Speaker 2: was doing when I drink.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Alone in the garage. But look.
- 2:11Speaker 2: It's not like they're all just trying to avoid Trump
- 2:14Speaker 2: like the plague, because these excuses are valid.
- 2:17Speaker 3: House Appropriations Chair Tom Cole says he has a can't-miss
- 2:20Speaker 3: dove hunting event.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:22Speaker 5: Well, yeah.
- 2:24Speaker 1: You can't miss dove hunting. Eat lead, symbol of peace.
- 2:36Speaker 1: All right, so a lot of the people aren't showing
- 2:39Speaker 1: up to the convention, but don't worry.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Mitch McConnell, he's already there.
- 2:44Speaker 1: His office just posted a photo, and he's looking better
- 2:48Speaker 1: than ever. That's proof.
- 2:56Speaker 2: But the midterm convention isn't the only big event happening
- 2:59Speaker 2: this week. Hey, tell him what else is going on, J.D. 9-11.
- 3:03Speaker 5: We're about to celebrate the 25th year.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, well, we're not going to celebrate it, J.D.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Happy 9-11, everyone. I brought Rice Krispie Towers. J.D.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Vance sounds like me when there's a Jewish holiday coming up.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Happy Yom Kippur. Is this a happy one?
- 3:28Speaker 2: I don't... Okay, so we're not going to celebrate 9-11,
- 3:33Speaker 2: but we are going to commemorate 9-11. And one thing
- 3:37Speaker 2: I always think about is how in the days after
- 3:40Speaker 2: the attacks, President Bush made a genuine effort to defend Islam.
- 3:46Speaker 4: These acts of violence against innocents violate the fundamental tenets
- 3:53Speaker 4: of the Islamic faith. And it's important for my fellow
- 3:58Speaker 4: Americans to understand that. Islam is peace.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Boy, we really didn't know how good we had it,
- 4:06Speaker 1: did we?
- 4:10Speaker 4: I mean....
- 4:18Speaker 2: I'm not saying this man was perfect, but that was
- 4:21Speaker 2: a full, coherent, non-racist sentence.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Hindsight, huh?
- 4:27Speaker 2: The point is, back in 2001, President Bush was imploring
- 4:30Speaker 2: the country not to lump all Muslims in with the
- 4:34Speaker 2: terrorists who committed 9-11.
- 4:36Speaker 1: So now it's 25 years later. Hey, how's that going?
- 4:40Speaker 2: An online petition is calling for New York City Mayor
- 4:42Speaker 2: Mamdani to skip this Friday's 9-11 memorial ceremony.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Why don't you go visit one of the mosques you support?
- 4:48Speaker 3: It is now racist to be wary of a religion
- 4:51Speaker 3: that calls for the killing of anyone that doesn't subscribe
- 4:54Speaker 3: to it.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Doesn't feel very racist to be Islamophobic. Seems kind of sensible.
- 4:59Speaker 1: All of the Muslims he supports are murderers. Okay, I
- 5:03Speaker 1: guess some of you guys might have missed the Bush speech.
- 5:09Speaker 2: So, yeah, it sure seems like people are mad that
- 5:11Speaker 2: the mayor of New York is going to attend a
- 5:14Speaker 2: 9-11 memorial while being Muslim. And Mamdani can't be happy
- 5:18Speaker 2: about that, but he's staying above the fray. Just last week,
- 5:21Speaker 2: he signed a proclamation declaring September 11th a citywide day
- 5:26Speaker 2: of remembrance. It's the kind of solemn, serious ceremony that
- 5:30Speaker 2: I'm sure his critics.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Will be happy about. Right?
- 5:34Speaker 4: Right?
- 5:37Speaker 3: Right?
- 5:38Speaker 5: It is being called a slap in the face to
- 5:40Speaker 5: the families of 9-11 victims.
- 5:42Speaker 3: He handed a ceremonial pen to his, um, first his
- 5:47Speaker 3: one staffer, then he puts it in the hands of
- 5:49Speaker 3: Ramzi Kassem.
- 5:50Speaker 1: All right, well, so much for that. And also, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 5:53Speaker 2: What are you complaining about? Who is Ramzi Kassem? I mean,
- 5:57Speaker 2: from his name, I can guess what you think is
- 6:00Speaker 2: wrong with him. but I'm gonna let you say it.
- 6:04Speaker 3: We know he's Mamdani's chief counsel.
- 6:06Speaker 1: That's fine.
- 6:07Speaker 3: But he once represented a convicted al-Qaeda member whose brother-in-law
- 6:12Speaker 3: hijacked the plane that struck the Pentagon.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Ah, okay.
- 6:17Speaker 2: So, apparently, the mayor shouldn't come to Ground Zero because
- 6:21Speaker 2: his lawyer's former client's brother-in-law was one of the hijackers,
- 6:28Speaker 2: and then that guy was in a movie with Kevin Bacon.
- 6:39Speaker 2: First of all, I don't like the implication that I
- 6:43Speaker 2: can be held responsible for the actions of my brother-in-law, okay?
- 6:47Speaker 1: I mean, he married my sister.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Yuck!
- 6:55Speaker 2: But secondly, just because a lawyer represents someone doesn't mean
- 6:58Speaker 2: they support their actions. John Adams defended the redcoats accused
- 7:03Speaker 2: in the Boston Massacre because he believed everyone had the
- 7:05Speaker 2: right to legal counsel.
- 7:07Speaker 1: And yeah, that's right.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I stayed awake for the first eight minutes of the
- 7:10Speaker 2: Paul Giamatti miniseries, so suck it.
- 7:15Speaker 4: So, fine.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Maybe you don't.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Like that this guy's in Mamdani's administration, but why do
- 7:20Speaker 2: you care that he gave him a pen?
- 7:23Speaker 5: Everything that the mayor does is very scripted, and he
- 7:27Speaker 5: is giving subliminal messages.
- 7:29Speaker 1: This is things that he are doing intentionally.
- 7:32Speaker 2: He's spitting in the face of victims and survivors of 9-11.
- 7:37Speaker 2: I'm telling you, this was symbolism.
- 7:40Speaker 1: It was cryptic, but it was a message. Seriously?
- 7:48Speaker 2: He gave a pen to everyone. It's not like when
- 7:51Speaker 2: he passed it to Ramzi Qasem, he went.
- 8:03Speaker 2: But, okay, if he really is sending a message, who
- 8:06Speaker 2: is he sending the message to? I hate to even
- 8:09Speaker 2: say this, Laura, but, you know, it's a message to
- 8:12Speaker 2: Osama bin Laden that, look, we conquered New York.
- 8:21Speaker 1: A message to Osama bin Laden. Lady, guess what? I
- 8:29Speaker 1: have some great news for you. The United States has
- 8:32Speaker 1: conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden.
- 8:36Speaker 4: Yeah!
- 8:37Speaker 1: We did.
- 8:43Speaker 3: It!
- 8:43Speaker 1: 15 years ago!
- 8:47Speaker 2: Look, I know nothing I say is going to convince
- 8:50Speaker 2: the Mamdani haters, but if you ask me, the idea
- 8:53Speaker 2: that 9-11 is about Muslims versus America isn't just wrong,
- 8:57Speaker 2: it's accepting Osama bin Laden's vision of the world.
- 9:01Speaker 1: And the fact that 25 years after.
- 9:03Speaker 2: 9-11, we have a New York-grown Muslim mayor leading our remembrance.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Proves proves to the world that Al-Qaeda didn't win, New
- 9:20Speaker 2: York won. So, yes.
- 9:26Speaker 1: So, yes.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Everyone is welcome at the 9-11 ceremony. And, look, I
- 9:31Speaker 2: would be there, but unfortunately, I'm going dove hunting, and
- 9:36Speaker 2: it's can't miss. For more on this controversy facing the mayor,
- 9:40Speaker 2: let's go live to City Hall with Jordan Klepper. Jordan,
- 9:50Speaker 2: it seems like this whole thing is kind of overblown.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Oh, overblown?
- 9:55Speaker 5: Michael, the mayor attending the ceremony is a slap in
- 9:58Speaker 5: the face to all the people who understand the symbolism
- 10:02Speaker 5: of the pen, which, might I remind you, is mightier
- 10:06Speaker 5: than the sword, which is a weapon of war, which
- 10:12Speaker 5: is what we were in after 9-11. I mean, come on,
- 10:15Speaker 5: how thick are you?
- 10:16Speaker 1: So.
- 10:18Speaker 2: So are you suggesting the respectful thing would be for
- 10:20Speaker 2: Mamdani not to attend the ceremony?
- 10:23Speaker 1: What a slap in the face!
- 10:25Speaker 5: Mamdani is going to skip a 9-11 ceremony?
- 10:29Speaker 1: What's he going to do instead? Let me guess.
- 10:30Speaker 5: Stay at home and pleasure himself to 9-11 footage, huh? Oh, man.
- 10:35Speaker 5: Slap in the face, spit in my mouth.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Okay, so what's the appropriate response? He goes but doesn't
- 10:43Speaker 1: give a speech? Oh, face slap! I mean, so what?
- 10:47Speaker 5: The Muslim mayor is just going to stay silent about
- 10:50Speaker 5: 9-11 on 9-11? Why won't he denounce it, Michael?
- 10:54Speaker 1: Huh?
- 10:54Speaker 5: Slap in the face, dick punch, tell me I'm a
- 10:56Speaker 5: bad boy.
- 10:57Speaker 1: You know what? You know what? Forget it. Forget it.
- 11:04Speaker 1: How about he just leaves town for the weekend? Oh,
- 11:07Speaker 1: on what? A plane?
- 11:11Speaker 5: You want Penboy to get on a plane on 9-11? What,
- 11:16Speaker 5: are you planning this now, Michael? Like some kind of co-conspirator?
- 11:19Speaker 2: Wow, slap in the face. But seriously, is there anything
- 11:23Speaker 2: that can make these critics happy?
- 11:25Speaker 5: Yeah, it's simple. All Mamdani has to do is not
- 11:28Speaker 5: attend the ceremony, not be the mayor, not be a Muslim,
- 11:32Speaker 5: and ideally be a white guy named Chad with a
- 11:35Speaker 5: New York Jets tattoo on his calf. And if he
- 11:39Speaker 5: can't do that, then at least step back and let
- 11:41Speaker 5: the people who were there remember what happened.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Like George W. Bush. George W.
- 11:46Speaker 5: Bush?
- 11:47Speaker 1: The guy who did 9-11? Slap in the face! Forget it.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Jordan Klepper, everybody.
