- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Today we're continuing our series on upgrading or moving your office.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: So far we've talked about the factors of pricing and location.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Now let's dive into something hard to define, but still important when you're considering the quality of your office space, and that is your environment.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Now here I'm referring to two things, the physical environment as well as the emotional and social environment.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: The physical environment is the area around your office.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Do you like the neighborhood?
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Is it safe and well kept?
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Does the office space have amenities like a kitchen, copier, clean bathrooms, or a parking lot with good access?
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: The emotional and social environment is also important.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: What are the people like?
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Are they friendly?
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: If it's a co-working space, are they keen on helping each other?
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: And do you like the general vibe?
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: A couple of years ago when I knew that I was leaving my college job, I checked out a local co-working space in the next town over from where I live, and I immediately, when I went in there, I immediately got a snobbish vibe, like the owners thought they were the coolest cats in town, and like you had to be really cool to take part in this cool co-working space.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: I went in there and I did not feel welcomed.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: On the other hand, last year I rented an office at a different co-working space for a month, and I really enjoyed it.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: The people were super friendly, and the vibe of the space was fantastic.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: They actually held a lot of community events at that space, and it was clear that they really cared about the people and they really cared about serving their community.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: However, I didn't end up renting an office there because the only ones they had available were slightly bigger than a shoebox.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: And when I say slightly, I mean just slightly bigger.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Another check mark against that space was that they had a policy that you could only work there during business hours, and I thought that was ridiculous.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: That was a huge no in my book because I sometimes like to work on Saturday mornings or occasionally late into the evenings.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: And that's just kind of what my rhythm is.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: I like the vibe of the space where I'm at now.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: It's close to my house, and the owners and property manager are all super nice, yet it's also a professional environment.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: So it's really lifted me up to another level just by being in that physical environment.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Now, in addition, I can come and go anytime I like, day or night, and that's really a deal maker for me.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: That has to be in place for any space that I rent because I don't want to be limited to just nine to five business hours.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Don't ever let anybody tell you that your writing environment doesn't matter.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: It matters hugely.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: So as much as it depends on you, choose to work and write in a space that values you and helps lift you up to another level.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: And if you're just fine working from home, that's great also.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: But be honest with yourself.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Are you really happy with that environment?
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: And if not, what can you do to improve it?
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: You might want to revisit the series that we just finished on clearing the clutter.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: There was a lot of good tips there on how to improve the writing space that you're currently using.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Here's today's challenge.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Whether you're working from home or considering an outside space, think about the physical and emotional environment of it.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Is it helping you be more productive?
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Is it helping you have a better state of mind?
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: If not, what can you do to change or improve it?
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Today's episode is sponsored by the Daily Writer Club.
