- 0:00Speaker 1: Boon the time of my life. Everybody deserves the time
- 0:03Speaker 1: of their lives, especially children. They deserve that. However, there
- 0:06Speaker 1: are some individuals, some children who have facial conditions and
- 0:10Speaker 1: severe burns, and this can affect their confidence and their
- 0:12Speaker 1: well being as a child. But in walks in the
- 0:15Speaker 1: Smile Foundation, who comes in with medical care that really
- 0:19Speaker 1: makes a difference in the community. For more than twenty
- 0:21Speaker 1: five years, they've been helping children get the treatment and
- 0:24Speaker 1: reconstructive surgery they need, giving them the chance to feel
- 0:27Speaker 1: confident and get on with being kids. Plus, the Discam
- 0:31Speaker 1: Foundation has been in partnership with the Smile Foundation just
- 0:34Speaker 1: to make sure that there's an extra boost in all
- 0:36Speaker 1: of the great work that they do. I wanted to
- 0:38Speaker 1: call the CEO because Terry, the story that comes from
- 0:42Speaker 1: you is very important. Welcome to the Flash Driving k
- 0:45Speaker 1: from ninety four point five.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Thank you for having me. I'm so excited to be here.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I'm so happy to have you because I know that, yes,
- 0:52Speaker 1: the Discam Foundation and all the Better Awards members have
- 0:54Speaker 1: been tripping in, sometimes even unknowingly, to make sure that
- 0:57Speaker 1: the operations of your very key organization can continues to
- 1:00Speaker 1: do your thing. So I mean, yes, I've outlined what
- 1:04Speaker 1: you do is the Smile Foundation, But of course these
- 1:07Speaker 1: surgeries are life changing, but they do cost money. So
- 1:11Speaker 1: I wanted to chat to you about the importance of
- 1:13Speaker 1: having partners like the DISCAM Foundation and others to make
- 1:16Speaker 1: sure that the work that you do gets done.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Absolutely, there's a massive gap in the healthcare system in
- 1:24Speaker 2: South Africa and one organization cannot solve this problem. So
- 1:28Speaker 2: partnering with companies like DISCM is just incredible in order
- 1:34Speaker 2: to create something larger than Smile could do on our own.
- 1:38Speaker 1: And I'm happy that the work you're doing. I see
- 1:40Speaker 1: it quite often and it's just it's really wonderful. And
- 1:44Speaker 1: I think the great thing is those stories after a
- 1:47Speaker 1: child is healed from surgery. The change in them is
- 1:50Speaker 1: so significant, and I know for a fact that it's
- 1:53Speaker 1: an it's entirely emotional journey that they go on when
- 1:56Speaker 1: this is happening. But there's also support services around the
- 1:59Speaker 1: surgery for them and their families that the Smile Foundation
- 2:02Speaker 1: do offer, which I'm also hearing about, which is so important.
- 2:06Speaker 1: But for those who don't really know about the construct
- 2:08Speaker 1: of the Smile Foundation itself, how about a little bit
- 2:12Speaker 1: of a blurb as to what you are aiming to achieve,
- 2:16Speaker 1: especially in twenty twenty six.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Yes, thank you So. Smile Foundation obviously provides surgeries for
- 2:23Speaker 2: kids with keptlip and pallet and severe burn scarring, but
- 2:27Speaker 2: we also provide access to the hospital, so we provide
- 2:31Speaker 2: transport and we help the moms and the caregivers get
- 2:34Speaker 2: to the hospital. We also make sure that they have
- 2:37Speaker 2: a dignified stay, so with the help of Disco Foundation,
- 2:40Speaker 2: we provide them with a care pack with toiletries. We
- 2:44Speaker 2: make sure that they're somewhere comfortable for them to stay
- 2:46Speaker 2: if we set up accommodation for them if it's not
- 2:48Speaker 2: in the hospital itself. And then we also have psychosocial support,
- 2:53Speaker 2: speech therapy, and just an ongoing journey beyond the surgery
- 2:58Speaker 2: through our Cleft Friends, which is a group support group
- 3:03Speaker 2: for moms who have had kids with cleft and they
- 3:06Speaker 2: can support each other through the journey to healing. And
- 3:09Speaker 2: you know, it's not just a cosmetic you know, it's
- 3:12Speaker 2: not just a smile. It's often these surgeries are for
- 3:15Speaker 2: cleft palettes, which means it affects their ability to breathe,
- 3:19Speaker 2: to eat, to feed, to hit their milestones and it's
- 3:23Speaker 2: also obviously a confidence thinkt in order to speak normally,
- 3:27Speaker 2: so you know, it goes in many different aspects. It
- 3:31Speaker 2: really does change a child and this whole communities life.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Well, let's bring in our friend Jackie here, because from
- 3:37Speaker 1: the Discan Foundation, Jackie, it's always a pleasure when I
- 3:40Speaker 1: hear that you've collabed with incredible foundations such as the
- 3:43Speaker 1: Smile Foundation.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Jackie.
- 3:46Speaker 1: It's lovely to have you. It really is always thanks
- 3:49Speaker 1: lovely to be with you again. So are hearing that
- 3:52Speaker 1: there's a Socks for Smiles campaign as well, and I
- 3:55Speaker 1: wanted to get a bit more light on that because
- 3:57Speaker 1: this sounds very exciting. It feels like we can get
- 4:00Speaker 1: ourselves a pair of socks but make a difference at
- 4:02Speaker 1: the same time.
- 4:04Speaker 3: It is very exciting and I'm slipping out of my
- 4:07Speaker 3: comfort zone with this because you know, I'm a little OCD.
- 4:10Speaker 3: And the whole thing is that you must wear mismatched socks.
- 4:13Speaker 3: And they do sell the most amazing socks on their website,
- 4:16Speaker 3: which Terry can give you, and they're funky and it
- 4:19Speaker 3: doesn't matter what sports you're doing, cycling, running, riding, those
- 4:22Speaker 3: socks don't move. They're amazing and they lightweight and they
- 4:25Speaker 3: keep you warm in winter. And I'm gonna wear mismatched
- 4:28Speaker 3: socks on the sixteenth of October. That's what I'm going
- 4:31Speaker 3: to do. But what we're doing, what Discam and the
- 4:34Speaker 3: Discim Foundation are doing for that is stickers will be
- 4:37Speaker 3: sold in store for twenty rand a sticker, and we
- 4:40Speaker 3: encourage all our loyal and new customers to please purchase
- 4:46Speaker 3: those stickers. Terry can assist me with a date that
- 4:49Speaker 3: the campaign starts to go laugh for purchase of stickers
- 4:53Speaker 3: in store. First Spring Day.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Yeah, beautiful day to buy us.
- 5:00Speaker 1: This sounds so good.
- 5:01Speaker 3: And we assist with care packs for the caregivers, the
- 5:06Speaker 3: moms and the children that they're having their operations, so
- 5:09Speaker 3: we ensure that they have health and hygiene tax going
- 5:12Speaker 3: into hospital and through their stay, and it certainly carries
- 5:16Speaker 3: them to afterwards as well.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Jackie. Just so Terarry hears it from you, why was
- 5:21Speaker 1: it important to collaborate and partner with a Smile Foundation.
- 5:25Speaker 3: For you, It's always important to collaborate and work with
- 5:29Speaker 3: people who are truly passionate about what they do and
- 5:33Speaker 3: where they've got to work every day, and that is
- 5:35Speaker 3: true of the Smile Foundation. And they're not just saving lives,
- 5:39Speaker 3: they're changing lives. They're giving people ambition and a chance
- 5:45Speaker 3: to see hope for their future, because without these surgeries,
- 5:48Speaker 3: there isn't well.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Terry, you know you have great friends, so do I
- 5:53Speaker 1: and I love this partnership. It's just a beautiful thing
- 5:55Speaker 1: that we can do when we be really making differences
- 5:57Speaker 1: in our communities. One September, we'd love to go and
- 6:00Speaker 1: support you, but for more information as to watch you
- 6:03Speaker 1: as the Smile Foundation do, could you please give us
- 6:06Speaker 1: the details so we can go click on and help
- 6:08Speaker 1: out where we can.

- 6:26Speaker 1: team members and your doctors who are part of this
- 6:28Speaker 1: Smile Foundation. We love what you do. Thank you for
- 6:32Speaker 1: really changing lives in a very significant way.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Thank you, Thanks for having us on your.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Show anytime, and you Jackie. We can't wait to buy
- 6:39Speaker 1: the stickers in store because I know for a fact
- 6:41Speaker 1: that we're also part of the project. Because we are
- 6:43Speaker 1: better Awards program people. We do this thing. You know,
- 6:46Speaker 1: this is who we are. So thank you for that, Carl.
- 6:50Speaker 3: I'll be in Cape Town in October. We're going to
- 6:52Speaker 3: wear mismatched sucks together.
- 6:54Speaker 1: I cannot wait to take a picture with you because
- 6:55Speaker 1: I know you said you like you said OCD.
- 6:57Speaker 3: I cannot wait.
- 7:00Speaker 1: I really hope that it's got to be different colors
- 7:02Speaker 1: and patterns and textures. Even I need it to be
- 7:04Speaker 1: very different.
- 7:05Speaker 3: I'm bringing you your pay.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Yes, I'm ready for that. Jackie. Thank you for the
- 7:10Speaker 1: great work that you do and your team at the
- 7:12Speaker 1: Discom Foundation. I always love having these conversations as to
- 7:15Speaker 1: how we are. We're making a difference, sometimes unknowingly, which
- 7:18Speaker 1: is just such a beautiful thing when we are indeed
- 7:20Speaker 1: a Discame Better Awards program members. So thanks a lot
- 7:23Speaker 1: for shedding some light and giving me Tarry's contact too.
