Chapter four, A new home keep still, whispered Jess. Benny obeyed.
• 0:08
The three children were as motionless as stone images, huddled inside the freight car.
• 0:14
Jess opened her mouth in order to breathe at all. Her heart was
• 0:17
thumping so wildly. She watched like a cat through the open door in the
• 0:23
direction of the rustling noise, and in a moment, the trembling bushes parted
• 0:29
and out crawled a dog. He was an Airdale and was pulling himself along
• 0:35
on three legs, whimpering softly. Jess drew a long breath of relief and
• 0:41
said to the children, it's all right, only a dog, but he
• 0:46
seems to be hurt. At the sound of her voice, the dog lifted
• 0:50
his eyes and wagged his tail feebly. He held up his front foot.
• 0:55
Poor doggie, murmured Jess soothingly, as she clambered out of the car.
• 1:00
Are let Jess see your poor lame foot. She approached the dog carefully,
• 1:04
for she remembered that her mother had always told her never to touch a strange
• 1:10
dog unless he wagged his tail. But this dog's tail was wagging certainly,
• 1:15
so Jess bent over without fear to look at the paw. An exclamation of
• 1:21
pity escaped her when she saw it, for a stiff, sharp thorn had
• 1:25
been driven completely through one of the cushions of the dog's foot and around it
• 1:30
the blood had dried. I guess I can fix that, said Jess briskly.
• 1:34
But taking the thorn out is going to hurt you, old fellow.
• 1:38
The dog looked up at her as she laid his paw down and licked her
• 1:42
hand. Come here, Violet, and Benny, directed Jess. She took
• 1:48
the animal gently in her lap and turned him on his side. She patted
• 1:53
his head and stroked his nose with one finger, and offered him the rest
• 1:57
of her bread crust, which she had put in her apron pocket. The
• 2:00
dog snapped it up as if he were nearly starved. Then she held the
• 2:06
soft paw firmly with her left hand and pulled steadily on the thorn with her
• 2:10
right hand. The dog did not utter a sound. He lay motionless in
• 2:15
her lap until the thorn suddenly let go and lay in Jess's hand. Good
• 2:22
good, cried Violet. Wet my handkerchief, Jess ordered, briskly. Violet
• 2:27
did so, dipping it in the running brook. Jess wrapped the cool wet
• 2:31
folds around the hot paw and gently squeezed it against the wound, the dog,
• 2:37
meanwhile trying to lick her hands. We'll sprise Henry, won't we,
• 2:42
laughed Benny, delightedly. Now we got a dog, to be sure,
• 2:46
said Jess, struck with the thought. But that isn't what I intended for
• 2:51
a surprise, you know, I was intending to get a lot of blueberries
• 2:54
and maybe find some old dishes in a dump or something. Can't we look
• 3:00
while you hold the dog, asked Violet anxiously. Of course you can,
• 3:04
pet, said Jess. Look over there by those rocks. Benny and Violet
• 3:08
scrambled through the underbrush to the place Jess pointed out and investigated. But they
• 3:15
did not hunt long, for the blueberries were so thick that the bushes almost
• 3:19
bent over with their weight. Oh, Jessie, screamed Benny. You never
• 3:23
saw so many in your life. What do'll we pick em into? Come
• 3:28
and get a clean towel, said Jess, who noticed that Benny was already
• 3:31
picking into his own mouth. But that's just as well, she thought,
• 3:37
because he won't get so hungry waiting for the milk. She watched the two
• 3:42
children for a moment as they dropped handfuls of the bluish globes on the towel.
• 3:46
Then she carefully got up with her little patient and went over and sat
• 3:51
down in the center of the patch. The berries were so thick that she
• 3:54
did not have to change her position before the towel held over a quart.
• 4:00
Oh dear, sighed Jess. I wish I could hunt for some dishes so
• 4:03
we could have blueberries and milk. Never mind, tonight, said Violet.
• 4:08
We can just eat a handful of berries and then take a drink of milk
• 4:12
when Henry comes. But it was even better than that, For when Henry
• 4:16
came, he had two bottles of milk under one arm, a huge loaf
• 4:21
of brown bread under the other, and some golden cheese and waxed paper in
• 4:27
his pocket. But you should have seen Henry's stare when he saw what Jess
• 4:30
was holding. Where in the world began the boy he came to us,
• 4:36
volunteered Benny, he came for a spries for you, and he's a nice
• 4:42
doggie. Henry knelt down to look at the visitor, who wagged his tail.
• 4:46
It wouldn't be a bad thing. To have a watch dog, said
• 4:49
Henry. I was worried about you all the time I was gone. Did
• 4:54
you bring some milk, inquired Benny, trying to be polite, but looking
• 4:58
at the bottles with long, longing eyes. Bless his heart, said Jess,
• 5:02
struggling to her feet with the dog. We'll have dinner right away,
• 5:06
or is it supper? Call it supper, suggested Henry, for it's the
• 5:11
last thing we'll have to eat to day, and then tomorrow we'll start having
• 5:15
three meals every day, laughed Jess. It was certainly a queer meal,
• 5:19
whatever it was. Jess, who liked above all things to be orderly,
• 5:25
spread out the big gray laundry bag on the pine needles for a tablecloth.
• 5:30
The brown loaf was cut by a very excited little Hostess into five thick squares,
• 5:35
the cheese into four dogs. Don't eat cheese, Benny remarked, cheerfully.
• 5:41
The poor little fellow was glad of it too, for he was very
• 5:44
hungry. He could hardly wait for Jess to set the milk bottles in the
• 5:48
center of the table and heap the blueberries in four little mounds, one at
• 5:53
each place. I'm sorry we haven't cups. Jess remarked, we'll just have
• 5:58
to drink out of the same bottle. No, we won't, said Henry.
• 6:01
We'll drink half of each bottle, so that will make at least two
• 6:04
things to drink out of. Good for you, Henry, said Jess,
• 6:08
much relieved. You and Bennie use one, and Violet and I will use
• 6:13
the other. So the meal began, look, Benny directed Henry. Eat
• 6:17
a handful of berries. Then take a bite of brown bread, then a
• 6:21
nibble of cheese. Now a drink of milk. It's good, it's good,
• 6:29
mumbled Benny to himself. All through the meal. You must not imagine
• 6:33
that the poor wandering dog was neglected, for Jess fed him gently as he
• 6:39
lay in her lap, poking morsels of bread into his mouth and pouring milk
• 6:43
into her own hand for him to lap up. When the meal was over,
• 6:48
and exactly half of each bottle of milk remained, Jess said, we
• 6:53
are going to sleep on beds tonight, and just as soon as we get
• 6:57
our beds made, we are all going to be washed. That'll be fun,
• 7:00
Benny added Violet. We'll wash our paws and the brook just the way
• 7:04
cinnamon does first, let's gather armfuls of dry pine needles, ordered Jess.
• 7:12
Get those on top that have been lying in the sunshine. Jess laid the
• 7:15
dog down on a bed of moss as she spoke, and started energetically to
• 7:19
scoop up piles of the fragrant needles. Soon a pile as high as her
• 7:24
head stood just under the freight car door. I think we have enough,
• 7:29
she said at last. Taking the scissors from Violet's work bag, she cut
• 7:32
the laundry bag carefully into two pieces, saving the cord for a clothes sign.
• 7:40
One of the big squares was laid across Benny's hay, and tucked under
• 7:44
that was the softest bed of all, Violet's apron and her own. She
• 7:48
cut off at the belt. I'll sleep next to Benny, said Henry,
• 7:54
with my head up by the door. Then I can hear what is going
• 7:56
on. A big pile of pine needles loaded into the freight car for Henry's
• 8:01
bed and covered with the other half of the laundry bag. The remainder of
• 8:05
the needles, Jess piled into the farthest corner of the car for herself and
• 8:09
Violet. We'll all sleep on one side, so we can call it the
• 8:13
bedroom. What'll be the other side, inquired Benny. The other side,
• 8:20
repeated Jess. Let me think. I guess that'll be the sitting room,
• 8:24
and perhaps some of the time the kitchen on rainy days, maybe the dining
• 8:28
room, added Henry with a wink. Couldn't it be the parlor, begged
• 8:33
Benny. Certainly the parlor. We forgot that, agreed Jess, returning the
• 8:39
wink. She was covering the last two soft beds with the two aprons.
• 8:43
The tops of these aprons are washcloths, she said severely. Then, armed
• 8:48
with the big cake of soap, she led the way to the brook.
• 8:52
The dog watched them anxiously, but when Jess said, lie still, he
• 8:58
obeyed. From the moment Jess drew the thorn from his foot, he was
• 9:03
her dog to obey her slightest command and to follow her wherever she went.
• 9:09
The clean, cool brook was delightful, even to Benny. The children rolled
• 9:13
up their sleeves and plunged their dusty arms into its waters, coarreling good naturedly
• 9:18
over the soap and lathering their stained faces and necks with it. When they
• 9:22
were well rinsed with clear water, they dried themselves with the towel. Then
• 9:28
Jess washed both towels nicely with soap, rinsed them, and hung them on
• 9:33
the clothes sign of tape, which she had stretched between two slender birch trees.
• 9:37
They flapped lazily in the wind. Looks like home already, Jess,
• 9:43
said Henry, smiling at the washing. The tired children clambered into the bedroom,
• 9:50
Jess coming last with the wounded dog. We'll have to leave the door
• 9:54
open, it's so hot, said Henry, lying down with a tired sigh.
• 9:58
And less than ten minutes they were fast asleep dog, and all asleep
• 10:05
at six o'clock, asleep, without naming the dog, without locking the door,
• 10:11
without fear. For this was the first night in four that they had
• 10:16
been able to go to sleep at night as children should. End of Chapter four
