- 0:00Welcome to the show, everybody!
- 0:02I'm Dangerous Zygos, here with DJ Universe, Calvin Blingwell,
- 0:06and Dandy Market.
- 0:08And guys, I want to start with a very specific number that completely redefines the
- 0:13music industry: twenty-four dollars and ninety-seven cents.
- 0:17That is what independent artist InvestInStockz is charging fans directly for his
- 0:22project, The Greenprint.
- 0:25No streaming middleman taking ninety-nine percent of a penny,
- 0:28no waiting on a label advances list.
- 0:31Just twenty-four ninety-seven, straight from the fan's bank account to the artist.
- 0:37See, as an artist based out in Calabasas, that number makes my soul happy.
- 0:42Twenty-four ninety-seven is basically the revenue of eight thousand streams on
- 0:46Spotify.
- 0:47Think about that.
- 0:48One single fan buying that digital download or physical copy directly is worth eight
- 0:53thousand people passive-listening on a playlist.
- 0:57That's the difference between chasing a viral moment and building actual
- 1:00infrastructure.
- 1:02Exactly, Calvin!
- 1:03It's the artist-as-media-company era.
- 1:06Stockz isn't just selling a WAV file; he's controlling the checkout,
- 1:10the customer data, the whole ecosystem.
- 1:13He's got the merch running through Shop Buy Money, he owns his recording pipeline
- 1:18with PRAUPER Studios down in Houston, and he's leveraging that independence to
- 1:23partner with massive brands like Nike, adidas, Samsung, and Experian.
- 1:28He's not waiting for a major label handout.
- 1:32You gotta stay lit to survive, and owning your pipeline is how you keep the lights
- 1:36on forever.
- 1:37But let's be real--this direct-to-fan play only works if your product is actually a
- 1:42premium artifact.
- 1:44Fans aren't paying twenty-five bucks out of charity.
- 1:47They pay because the visual identity, the sonic mixing, and the brand aesthetic are
- 1:53so tight that they want to physically or digitally own a piece of it.
- 1:59That's the legacy blueprint right there.
- 2:01It's what Diddy was preaching about ownership in the nineties,
- 2:03what Dame and Jay did with Roc-A-Fella.
- 2:06It's turning records into physical infrastructure.
- 2:09If you don't control the pipeline, you're just a renter.
- 2:12Even the majors know this.
- 2:14Look at the recent Concord and Steven Victor venture with Victor Victor Worldwide.
- 2:18That strategic, multi-year deal is all about catalog stewardship and controlling the
- 2:23long-term reach.
- 2:25If you don't own your masters and your distribution, someone else will package your
- 2:28legacy for you.
- 2:30That's the real wealth play.
- 2:31Streaming is a billboard; it's not the store.
- 2:34The real money is in the merch margins, the brand partnerships,
- 2:38and owning your physical spaces.
- 2:41Stockz is out here performing at Rolling Loud, REVOLT TV events,
- 2:45and HBCUs, but he isn't just rapping--he's actively teaching financial literacy to
- 2:50Gen Z from the stage.
- 2:52He's turning the performance into a classroom and a direct sales funnel at the exact
- 2:56same time.
- 2:58Think about the data math there.
- 2:59If he performs at an HBCU and gets five hundred students to sign up for an email
- 3:04list or an SMS text club to get a free digital drop, he now owns those contacts.
- 3:10He doesn't have to pay Instagram or TikTok an algorithm tax to reach them next time
- 3:14he drops merch or a new record.
- 3:16That email list is an appreciating balance sheet asset.
- 3:20And on the indie grind, you have to be incredibly tactical with that list.
- 3:24Merch can't just be random logos slapped on cheap gildan tees.
- 3:28You need limited-edition bundles, tour-only exclusives, and pricing that reflects
- 3:34the value of the community.
- 3:35A fifty-dollar limited hoodie sold directly to three hundred dedicated fans makes
- 3:40you fifteen thousand dollars.
- 3:42To make that on streaming, you need almost four million plays.
- 3:46The math doesn't lie.
- 3:48It goes back to the Supreme Mathematics--Build or Destroy.
- 3:52You have to destroy the old mindset of relying on gatekeepers and build your own
- 3:56self-sustaining systems.
- 3:59It's knowledge of self applied to business.
- 4:02When you understand your value, you protect your publishing,
- 4:06you study your contracts, and you don't sign away your likeness for quick cash.
- 4:11So let's make this practical for the artists listening right now.
- 4:14What can you actually execute this week?
- 4:17Step one: stop sending people exclusively to streaming links.
- 4:23Set up a simple direct landing page with an email and SMS capture form.
- 4:28If someone wants a free unreleased track, they trade their email for it.
- 4:32Period.
- 4:33Step two: look at local brand partnerships.
- 4:35You don't need Nike to call you tomorrow.
- 4:38Go to the regional streetwear shop, the local credit union,
- 4:41or the neighborhood energy drink brand.
- 4:43Pitch a partnership that actually makes sense for your local crowd.
- 4:46Show them your hyper-local engagement metrics, not just vanity follower counts.
- 4:51And step three: audit your creative costs.
- 4:54If you are spending eighty dollars an hour renting commercial studio space every
- 4:59week, stop.
- 5:00Find a low-cost co-op, team up with three other local creatives to lease a shared
- 5:05room, or look at a rent-to-own path for your own gear.
- 5:09Build your own version of what PRAUPER Studios did in Houston.
- 5:13If you aren't reinvesting your early show money into cameras,
- 5:15microphones, and property, your brand is just cosmetic.
- 5:20You're wearing the chain but renting the mic.
- 5:22That's a house of cards.
- 5:24Which leaves us with one final question to chew on: hip-hop taught us how to own the
- 5:28block, the label, and the lane.
- 5:31But in this digital era, if you don't own the direct relationship with your actual
- 5:35fans, who really owns your legacy?
- 5:38Think about it.
- 5:38I'm Dangerous Zygos, with DJ Universe, Calvin Blingwell, and Dandy Market.
- 5:43Peace.
