Transcript
- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It is the 29th of December.
- 0:16It is a Monday but it may as well be a Thursday or a Tuesday
- 0:20because this is that wonderful week of the year where days of
- 0:24the week dates of the year tend to mean nothing as we just
- 0:27cruise and glide from Christmas to New Year with easy days.
- 0:33Well I hope that is your experience of this week.
- 0:35And this is also a glorious week because we get to spend it with
- 0:39their old mate Luke telling us stories about Jesus living his
- 0:43life. And today is a wonderful day
- 0:47that we're going to hear about Jesus baptism and then we're
- 0:51going to launch into an ancestry of Jesus.
- 0:54And this is a lot of names. So and so is the son of so and
- 0:58so. The whole point of this is not
- 1:01to locate an enormous family tree with all the details, but
- 1:05it's to say this Jesus that was just baptised as the Son of God
- 1:10actually comes from that very first son of God, Adam.
- 1:14And not just from Adam, but on the way fulfils this prophecy of
- 1:19coming from the line of David and also through the line of
- 1:22Abraham. So he is a fulfilment.
- 1:25He is the Son of God. He is here to save the Jewish
- 1:28people and he is here to save all of humankind from Adam.
- 1:34So that is the point of this genealogy.
- 1:36So as you hear these words, let them wash over you to know that
- 1:40Jesus didn't just arrive on a comet from outer space
- 1:43unannounced, but he is part of God's long planned rescue plan
- 1:48for you and me, friends. So let us read this story
- 1:52together as we read together Luke chapter 3.
- 2:05It was now the 15th year of the reign of Tiberius.
- 2:08The Roman emperor Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea.
- 2:13Herod Antipus was ruler over Galilee, his brother Philip was
- 2:17ruler over Arturia and Trachonitis, Licenius was ruler
- 2:22over Ibeline. Anas and Caiaphas were the high
- 2:25priests. At this time a message from God
- 2:28came to John, son of Zechariah, who is living in the wilderness.
- 2:32Then John went from place to place on both sides of the
- 2:35Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptised to
- 2:38show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to
- 2:41be forgiven. Isaiah had spoken of John when
- 2:44he said he is a voice shouting in the wilderness.
- 2:48Prepare the way for the Lord's coming.
- 2:51Clear the road for him. The valleys will be filled and
- 2:54the mountains and hills made level.
- 2:56The curves will be straightened and the rough places made
- 3:00smooth, and then all people will see the salvation sent from God.
- 3:06When the crowds came to John for baptism, he said, You brood of
- 3:10snakes who warned you to flee the coming wrath.
- 3:13Prove by the way that you live that you have repented of your
- 3:16sins and turned to God. Don't just say to each other
- 3:19we're safe, for we're descendants of Abraham.
- 3:22That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of
- 3:27Abraham from these very stones. Even now the acts of God's
- 3:31judgement is poised, ready to sever the roots of the trees.
- 3:35Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be
- 3:39chopped down and thrown into the fire.
- 3:42The crowds asked what should we do?
- 3:45John replied if you have two shirts, give one to the poor.
- 3:49If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.
- 3:53Even corrupt tax collectors came to be baptised and asked teacher
- 3:58what should we do? He replied, collect no more
- 4:02taxes than the government requires.
- 4:05What should we do? Asked some soldiers.
- 4:08John replied don't extort money or make false accusations and be
- 4:13content with your pay. Everyone was expecting the
- 4:17Messiah to come soon and they were eager to know whether John
- 4:20might be the Messiah. John answered their questions by
- 4:23saying I baptise you with water, but someone is coming soon who
- 4:28is greater than I am, so much greater.
- 4:32Then I'm not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps
- 4:35of his sandals. He will baptise you with the
- 4:38Holy Spirit and with fire. He is ready to separate the
- 4:42chaff from the wheat with his winnowing fork.
- 4:45Then he will clean up the threshing area, gathering the
- 4:48wheat into his barn but burning the chaff with never ending
- 4:52fire. John used many such warnings as
- 4:56he announced the good news to the people.
- 4:58John also publicly criticised Herod Antipas, the ruler of
- 5:02Galilee, for marrying Herodias, his brother's wife, and for many
- 5:06other wrongs he had done. So Herod put John in prison,
- 5:10adding this sin to his many others.
- 5:13One day when the crowds are being baptised, Jesus hisself
- 5:17was baptised. As he was praying, the heavens
- 5:21opened and the Holy Spirit in bodily form descended on him
- 5:25like a dove. And a voice from heaven said,
- 5:30you are my dearly loved son, and you bring me great joy.
