- 0:12Hello friends, it is Sean here. It is a Thursday.
- 0:16It is the 28th of September. And hello, good to have your
- 0:21company. You and I are going to hit one
- 0:24of these great big pivot points today in the Bible.
- 0:28Today is the day that we continue to hear about this dude
- 0:31named Saul who is walking the streets, grabbing Christians,
- 0:36dragging them out of homes and throwing them in jail, and even
- 0:41officiating at the execution of some of them.
- 0:44He is 1 smart guy. He is trained in the ways of the
- 0:49Pharisees and he is on a mission from God.
- 0:52He thinks that boy is his world about to be turned on its head.
- 0:58It's probably even a good reminder for us that even when
- 1:01we think we are on a mission, we should stay open to hearing that
- 1:05still small voice or that loud, clear voice from the sky that
- 1:09might just redirect us and all of our efforts into a different
- 1:13way of serving God scary stuff. Anyway, this is not our story
- 1:18today. This is Saul's story, so join me
- 1:21as we read this story together as told in Acts Chapter 9.
- 1:35Meanwhile, Saul was uttering threats with every breath and
- 1:39was eager to kill the Lord's followers, so he went to the
- 1:43high priest. He requested letters addressed
- 1:46to the synagogues in Damascus asking for their cooperation and
- 1:49the arrest of any followers of the way he found there.
- 1:54He wanted to bring them, both men and women, back to Jerusalem
- 1:58in chains. As he was approaching Damascus
- 2:02on this mission, a light from heaven suddenly shone down
- 2:06around him. He fell to the ground and heard
- 2:09a voice saying to him. Saul, Saul, why are you
- 2:13persecuting me? Who are you, Lord Saul asked and
- 2:18the voice replied, I am Jesus, the one you were persecuting.
- 2:23Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you
- 2:28must do. The men with Saul stood
- 2:30speechless, for they heard the sound of someone's voice, but
- 2:34saw no one. Saul picked himself up off the
- 2:37ground, but when he opened his eyes he was blind, so his
- 2:41companions led him by the hand to Damascus.
- 2:44He remained there blind for three days, and did not eat or
- 2:48drink. Now there was a believer in
- 2:51Damascus named Ananias, and the Lord spoke to him in a vision,
- 2:55calling Ananias. Yes, Lord, he replied.
- 3:00The Lord said, go over to straight St. to the House of
- 3:04Judas. When you get there, ask for a
- 3:07man from Tarsus named Saul. He is praying to me right now.
- 3:12I have shown him a vision of a man named Ananias coming in and
- 3:16laying hands on him so he can see again.
- 3:20But Lord, exclaimed Ananias. I've heard many people talk
- 3:24about the terrible things this man has done to the believers in
- 3:28Jerusalem, And he is authorized by the leading priests to arrest
- 3:33everyone who calls upon your name.
- 3:36But the Lord said, go, for Saul is my chosen instrument to take
- 3:41my message to the Gentiles and to kings, as well as to the
- 3:46people of Israel, And I will show him how much he must suffer
- 3:50for my name's sake. So Ananias went and found Saul.
- 3:56He laid his hands on him and said, Brother Saul, the Lord
- 4:00Jesus who appeared to you on the road, has sent me so that you
- 4:04might regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 4:08Instantly something like scales fell from Saul's eyes and he
- 4:12regained his sight. Then he got up and was baptized.
- 4:16Afterwards he ate some food and regained his strength.
- 4:21Saul stayed with the believers in Damascus for a few days and
- 4:25immediately he began preaching about Jesus in the synagogue,
- 4:28saying he is indeed the Son of God.
- 4:32All they heard him were amazed. Isn't this the same man who
- 4:36caused such devastation among Jesus followers in Jerusalem?
- 4:41They asked. And didn't he come here to
- 4:44arrest them and take them and change to the leading priests?
- 4:48Saul's preaching became more and more powerful, and the Jews in
- 4:53Damascus couldn't refuse his proofs that Jesus was indeed the
- 4:56Messiah. After a while, some of the Jews
- 4:59plotted together to kill him. They were watching for him day
- 5:03and night at the city gate so they could murder him, but Saul
- 5:07was told about their plot. So during the night, some of the
- 5:11other believers lowered him in a large basket through an opening
- 5:14in the city wall. When Saul arrived in Jerusalem,
- 5:18he tried to meet with the believers, but they were all
- 5:21afraid of him. They did not believe he had
- 5:24truly become a believer. Then Barnabas brought him to the
- 5:28apostles and told them how Saul had seen the Lord on the way to
- 5:32Damascus and how the Lord had spoken to Saul.
- 5:35He also told them that Saul had preached boldly in the name of
- 5:39Jesus in Damascus. So Saul stayed with the apostles
- 5:43and went all around Jerusalem with them, preaching boldly in
- 5:47the name of the Lord. He debated with some
- 5:50Greekspeaking Jews, but they tried to murder him.
- 5:53When the believers heard about this, they took him down to
- 5:56Sesarea and sent him away to Tarsus, his hometown.
- 6:01The church then had peace throughout Judea, Galilee, and
- 6:05Samaria, and it became stronger as the believers lived in the
- 6:09fear of the Lord, and with the encouragement of the Holy
- 6:13Spirit, it also grew in numbers. Meanwhile, Peter traveled from
- 6:19place to place, and he came down to visit the believers in the
- 6:23town of Lida. There he met a man named Aneus
- 6:27who had been paralyzed and bedridden for eight years.
- 6:31Peter said to him, Aneus, Jesus Christ heals you get up and roll
- 6:37up your sleeping mat, and he was healed instantly.
- 6:41Then the whole population of Leider and Sharon saw Aneus
- 6:46walking around, and they turned to the Lord.
- 6:51There was a believer in Jopper named Tabitha, which in Greek is
- 6:55Dorcas. She was always doing kind things
- 6:58for others and helping the poor. About this time she became ill
- 7:03and died. Her body was washed for burial
- 7:06and laid in an upstairs room. But the believers had heard that
- 7:09Peter was nearby at Lida, so they sent two men to beg him
- 7:14please come as soon as possible. So Peter returned with them, and
- 7:19as soon as he arrived, they took him to the upstairs room.
- 7:23The room was filled with widows who were weeping and showing him
- 7:26the coats and other clothes Dorcas had made for them.
- 7:30But Peter asked them all to leave the room.
- 7:33Then he knelt and prayed. Turning to the body, he said,
- 7:37get up Tabitha, and she opened her eyes.
- 7:43When she saw Peter, she sat up. He gave her his hand and helped
- 7:47her up. Then he called in the widows and
- 7:49all the believers, and he presented her to them alive.
- 7:54The news spread through the whole town, and many believed in
- 7:58the Lord. And Peter stayed a long time in
- 8:00Joppa, living with Simon, a Tanner of hides.
- 8:14Lord, you see people in the way that you see them, in the way
- 8:19that you know them deep in their hearts.
- 8:22To us, Lord, some people seem irredeemable and just not worth
- 8:25our time. But here you show us that even
- 8:28someone as hell bent on destroying your church as soul
- 8:33can be transformed into one of your most powerful servants.
- 8:39So, Lord, help us reserve judgment.
- 8:42Help us to love and accept. Help us to welcome and include
- 8:49so that your spirit can have its way amongst us and the people
- 8:53around us, and that we can show the world a different way of
- 8:59being. Where forgiveness and kindness
- 9:03is our natural posture. We just thank you for showing us
- 9:07your kindness and forgiveness first.
- 9:11We love you, Jesus, and we pray all of this in your name.
- 9:15I'm in.
