- 0:05Mike Marrs: Can you hear that?
- 0:07Mike Marrs: Can you hear it now?
- 0:08Mike Marrs: Yeah, yeah.
- 0:09Mike Marrs: I just got to turn that.
- 0:10Mike Marrs: All right.
- 0:11Mike Marrs: We're back.
- 0:12Mike Marrs: We're at the Back to the Past car show.
- 0:15Mike Marrs: We've got another guest joining us here, and we're going to be talking about Tweety Bird.
- 0:20SPEAKER_04: Woohoo, my Tweet Tweet.
- 0:22Mike Marrs: Debbie.
- 0:23Mike Marrs: Debbie.
- 0:23Mike Marrs: Miller.
- 0:24SPEAKER_04: And Andrew Miller.
- 0:26Mike Marrs: Andrew Miller.
- 0:26Mike Marrs: I keep all I know him just from his pictures and stuff.
- 0:29Mike Marrs: Let's go this way.
- 0:30Mike Marrs: Yes, sir.
- 0:31Mike Marrs: There he is.
- 0:32Mike Marrs: He's in here.
- 0:33Mike Marrs: So we've talked to you a couple of times, but this time we've got a picture of your truck out here that we're talking about.
- 0:39Mike Marrs: Yes, sir.
- 0:40Mike Marrs: So tell us about your Tweety Bird, please, ma'am.
- 0:44SPEAKER_04: Well, the thing is, is that we've always liked vintage cars.
- 0:48SPEAKER_04: We go to car shows before we even had a classic.
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: And then we had Lurlene first, and then my husband found this 1939.
- 0:59SPEAKER_04: He asked me, uh, before I'm gonna buy you a new car, what do you want?
- 1:04SPEAKER_04: A Mercedes, Lexus, or BMW?
- 1:07SPEAKER_04: I said, no, but you know what?
- 1:09SPEAKER_04: No.
- 1:10SPEAKER_04: I want something that nobody has ever seen.
- 1:13SPEAKER_04: You see those other cars every day.
- 1:16SPEAKER_04: You don't see a classic vehicle truck, and my husband blessed me with this 1939, and it's the best thing that he has ever bought me.
- 1:26SPEAKER_04: And I love her.
- 1:27SPEAKER_04: She is my daily driver, nails, hair, doctor, H E B, Walgreens.
- 1:33SPEAKER_04: People think I'm crazy.
- 1:36SPEAKER_04: Uh, she wasn't even a month old, and we took her from here to Laramie, Wyoming, from there to Tucum Carrie, New Mexico, and home, and no trailer.
- 1:46SPEAKER_04: And a lot of people thought, So you drove it?
- 1:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:50SPEAKER_04: They said, You're not scared to put the miles on her.
- 1:53SPEAKER_04: She's gonna get stolen or get chips.
- 1:55SPEAKER_04: What are you gonna do?
- 1:56SPEAKER_04: Just sit her in the garage.
- 1:58Mike Marrs: Yeah, the stealing would be what I would be afraid of sitting at a hotel.
- 2:01Mike Marrs: She has a tracker on her.
- 2:02Mike Marrs: I was afraid in the hail.
- 2:05SPEAKER_04: They get big hail in Wyoming.
- 2:07SPEAKER_04: Now we didn't and the panhandle.
- 2:09SPEAKER_04: We did go through that and she it did hail on her, but knock on wood, it didn't do nothing to her.
- 2:14Mike Marrs: Pull this up just a little bit closer here.
- 2:19SPEAKER_04: How's that?
- 2:20Mike Marrs: Better.
- 2:21SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 2:21SPEAKER_04: So if you're scared to drive your classic, I mean, what good is a vehicle if you have her?
- 2:27SPEAKER_04: Why just go in the garage and turn the light on and say, look how shot she looks.
- 2:34SPEAKER_04: I mean, I have fun with her.
- 2:36Mike Marrs: I know some people that do that.
- 2:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, a lot of people just go.
- 2:39SPEAKER_04: We got a lot of friends, and they just go every day and just sit there and look at them.
- 2:44SPEAKER_04: I mean, I drive her.
- 2:46SPEAKER_04: I even raced a little boy in a C10 on Clay Road, and I whooped him.
- 2:52SPEAKER_04: He was shocked.
- 2:53SPEAKER_04: Was both at a red light.
- 2:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 2:55SPEAKER_04: He kept revving up his motor.
- 2:57SPEAKER_04: He was probably looking at my Tweety bird and saying, Oh, I got her, and plus a woman at that.
- 3:02SPEAKER_04: So I just when that light turned green, he went and I nailed my Tweety bird and I passed him, he went, did a thumbs up.
- 3:10SPEAKER_04: And what I wanted to tell him so bad, never judge a book by its cover because she has a 350 up underneath.
- 3:17Mike Marrs: 350 Civic Small Block?
- 3:19Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 3:19Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 3:20SPEAKER_04: A lot of people, you know, there's some people, the old school, the kind of haters on that, but like Bruce's Raja, Bruce's wife.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: She was asked, or yeah, she was asked why she had a Chevy motor in it.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: Chevy 350, it fits in everything.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: So why not?
- 3:42Mike Marrs: Well, parts are readily available.
- 3:44Mike Marrs: You don't have to have some oddball, you know.
- 3:47Mike Marrs: I think it was a distributor difference between a 289 and a 302.
- 3:51Mike Marrs: They're still both small blocks, but still something about I don't remember what it was because I never missed the Ford that much, but Chevrolet Small Block of 350 is a 350.
- 4:00Mike Marrs: It doesn't make any difference what year it is.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: 300 horse out of the box.
- 4:04SPEAKER_04: But you know, some people are haters about that because they think you should have the Ford original.
- 4:10Mike Marrs: If you were restoring it, I could see that.
- 4:13Mike Marrs: But you're not restoring it, you're driving it.
- 4:15SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 4:15SPEAKER_04: And plus I bought her that way, even if I did want to change her.
- 4:19SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's my vehicle.
- 4:20SPEAKER_04: I should be able to do what we want to with her.
- 4:24SPEAKER_04: And she's reliable, she can go fast.
- 4:28SPEAKER_04: I can hot rod her when I want to.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: And she was built right, she was frame off.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: I got pictures of it.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: That was automatic.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: It was done 1999.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: And she was in the center of a hot rod magazine.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: Ah.
- 4:46SPEAKER_04: That's the best thing that my husband ever bought me was that truck right there.
- 4:52SPEAKER_04: And I love her.
- 4:53SPEAKER_04: And everybody thinks I'm crazy, but I love her.
- 4:55SPEAKER_04: I love that truck.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: She used to be orange-peeled.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: But she gets up every day at 3 a.m.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: and goes out there and polishes.
- 5:04SPEAKER_04: He bought it in 2023.
- 5:07SPEAKER_04: She has had zero water on her.
- 5:09SPEAKER_04: None.
- 5:10SPEAKER_04: Except and she looks just like that because I get up every morning and with my torque detail, and that's all I have to do to her.
- 5:18SPEAKER_04: And the hardest part of cleaning that truck is the tires to keep them white, but I finally found something.
- 5:25Mike Marrs: So they're they're real wide white walls, they're not just the stickle and things.
- 5:29SPEAKER_04: No, that's the true McCoy white walls.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 5:35SPEAKER_04: But they're very hard.
- 5:36SPEAKER_04: I've tried every product, and I finally found Texas Detail Degreaser.
- 5:41SPEAKER_04: That's the best thing that will clean them white walls.
- 5:48SPEAKER_04: But she's pretty.
- 5:50SPEAKER_04: And she's all mine.
- 5:52Mike Marrs: I saw you when you were driving it around and brought it over here, and it looked like it was, you know, you were just kind of whipping her around through the parking lot like nothing to it.
- 6:00SPEAKER_04: Power steering and power steering, AC, everything.
- 6:04SPEAKER_04: The only thing that we've added to it is uh the uh double exhaust in the back.
- 6:10SPEAKER_04: We've had some front end work done, but other than that, we got it just like is.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: We put an antique trunk in it that is absolutely gorgeous.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: That we found an antique trunk.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: Oh, a trunk.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: And so all our cleaning stuff, all our signs for car shows, all of it fits in the trunk.
- 6:30SPEAKER_04: And we found that in Wyoming and brought it back, and he painted it, put the little uh what do you call them little buttons?
- 6:37SPEAKER_04: Conchos on it and stuff, and we put Route 66 stickers, and to me, and then he uh put a V8 emblem in the trunk when you raised it.
- 6:51SPEAKER_04: And to me, that's what made my trunk because when we bought the the truck, it came with like an igloo with a black bottom and a gray, it didn't go with the truck.
- 7:01SPEAKER_04: And then we found that in Wyoming and we brought it back, and my husband correct for the error.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: You know what an old farmer had put in the back of the truck, right?
- 7:11Mike Marrs: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:12Mike Marrs: I can see that.
- 7:13Mike Marrs: And you got the little side rails on the side of it that are kind of it's not really a state bid, but that's kind of a state bid look to it.
- 7:20SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 7:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 7:21SPEAKER_04: So we got a good deal on uh uh on her, and my husband hooked me up real good.
- 7:27SPEAKER_04: That's the best thing that he's ever got.
- 7:29Mike Marrs: Well, and and and it's drivable, obviously, because you can drive it all the way to New Mexico.
- 7:33Mike Marrs: I mean, that's what 20 hours just almost from here.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: We did 3,800 miles in 10 days going to Wyoming and back.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: Went to Rollins and up to Hannah and Medicine and Sinclair.
- 7:47Mike Marrs: I'm running the map in my mind going, my gosh.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: And I'm telling you, people thought we were nuts.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: The coolest part, like you drive it up to Walmart and park it.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: And all of a sudden you got 50 people around.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: I can have our mom's.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: And you hear them saying, my grandpa had one of those just like it.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: Up on the farm, you know, go see them during the summer.
- 8:10SPEAKER_04: And you get to hear their story.
- 8:11SPEAKER_04: It's not cars going to car shows and getting a trophy, but I like telling my story about my Tweety Bird, how I got her, how I was into cars before we even had a classic, what it meant to me, and then after I got her, because somebody offered me a hundred thousand dollars and I turned them down because that's how much I love my Tweety Bird.
- 8:33Mike Marrs: Well,$100,000 you can buy a bunch of cars, but you're not gonna go buy that.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: And plus you couldn't build it for that if you were lucky.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: Well, you could, but you'd have to be lucky enough to find one that was still there.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: Kind of bones to build it with, not a see-through truck where you're watching the sunset through the truck with all the rush.
- 8:57SPEAKER_04: But you can't buy memories.
- 8:59SPEAKER_04: No, you can't buy memories.
- 9:00Mike Marrs: And that's what we were talking about, you were talking about the people at the Walmart, you know, coming up and seeing it and looking at it.
- 9:05Mike Marrs: And it's my grandfather.
- 9:06Mike Marrs: I was thinking back, first vehicle I ever wrecked.
- 9:10Mike Marrs: Uh, I was up at my grandparents in Arkansas in the Ozarks.
- 9:14Mike Marrs: We're up on the side of the hill, and oh they had a basement built inside the hill.
- 9:18Mike Marrs: That's where they kept all the potatoes, you know.
- 9:20Mike Marrs: That's where they kept all this stuff.
- 9:21Mike Marrs: So he told me and my cousin, you know, you know, go on up there and bring the truck down.
- 9:26Mike Marrs: And it was push button start.
- 9:28Mike Marrs: It was like it was about like a 56, 57 Chevrolet, you know.
- 9:32Mike Marrs: And neither one of us could touch the pedals and look over.
- 9:34Mike Marrs: So I was steering and he was running pedals down below and come down off that hill and went right through the clothes line, took down all of Ma and Grandma's clothes, and I think it was they were memories.
- 9:46Mike Marrs: That was it.
- 9:47Mike Marrs: I mean, it that was a really long time ago when that happened.
- 9:51Mike Marrs: So, you know, it just that's when you see things like that, and that's what you do, and that's to me.
- 9:56SPEAKER_04: That's like when you take her anywhere, I don't care if it's at H E B or whatever, or the car show, they come up, and my dad had one.
- 10:05SPEAKER_04: I wrote him one of those as a kid.
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:08SPEAKER_04: And you get to hear their story.
- 10:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah, not just your story, but you get to hear their story, and we they enjoy that.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: At the car shows, the little kids come up with mom and dad.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: Hey, you want a picture of him and behind the wheel?
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we love it.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: We put that kid up there.
- 10:25Mike Marrs: Well, I saw one up there earlier.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: That's a future hot rider.
- 10:29Mike Marrs: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:30Mike Marrs: Yeah, and I'm gonna ask this you've got your Ford uh panel truck.
- 10:34Mike Marrs: Panel truck.
- 10:35Mike Marrs: It's a 41.
- 10:37Mike Marrs: Do you get that same kind of reaction?
- 10:39Mike Marrs: Yes, do you?
- 10:40Mike Marrs: Yeah, because you've got a uh you got a different paint style to it.
- 10:45Mike Marrs: I mean, you know, this is got that farm truck look to it, but it's obviously not.
- 10:49Mike Marrs: It's yellow.
- 10:50Mike Marrs: It's yellow and it stands out.
- 10:52Mike Marrs: Yours is dark blue, it's got uh I think a mural or something.
- 10:55Mike Marrs: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:56Mike Marrs: Really nice, but it's just it's a different type of it's more hot rod.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: The way it's custom.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that could be that could be a way to do it.
- 11:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, she's got the bags on her and everything.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, even on Route 66, like we pulled up in Shamrock at the Conaco Tower, and we went in to see if that old lady was still working at the little travel center there at the store.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and if she was wearing her poodle dress, and sure enough, she was there.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: But when we came out, we had people with cameras all around that truck.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: Can we take pictures?
- 11:38Mike Marrs: Oh, with the Texas plates on it, too.
- 11:40Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 11:42SPEAKER_04: I went, my mama lives in Webster, and I took her to the eye doctor in that truck, and when we got out, there was this elderly man with the Ford hat.
- 11:51SPEAKER_04: He was Ford all the way.
- 11:54SPEAKER_04: I mean, he loved a truck.
- 11:55SPEAKER_04: Well, he came out there, he opened the door for my 97-year-old mama.
- 12:00SPEAKER_04: I told my mama, I said, Well, mama, you need to get you an old truck, you get you some boyfriends.
- 12:09SPEAKER_04: I mean, that's how, you know, an older vehicle, that's how they respect it.
- 12:15SPEAKER_04: Like I said, you know, maybe because they had one.
- 12:18Mike Marrs: Right.
- 12:19SPEAKER_04: You know, or their or their parents had one, their daddy had one, they rode in the back.
- 12:24SPEAKER_04: It just brings back a lot of memories.
- 12:26Mike Marrs: It does, it really does.
- 12:27Mike Marrs: And I think that's really great.
- 12:29Mike Marrs: And I think it's really great that y'all are kind of patient with people when they come up and want to look at it and things.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: Well, the best part a whole year of insurance only costs$105.
- 12:43Mike Marrs: Are you kidding me?
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: No.
- 12:45Mike Marrs: They consider it uh because it's antique or I'm asking because I'm thinking how did I get that?
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: That's for what I paid for it.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: It's worth the paint would cost more than what I paid for it.
- 12:59Mike Marrs: Okay.
- 13:00Mike Marrs: Um so you don't have like regular liability insurance kind of.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: No, it's full coverage through Grundy.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: And they use uh Philadelphia Fire and something, Fire of Life.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: That's who underwrites it.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: But I only have that insured for what I paid for it.
- 13:24SPEAKER_04: And we've only got it.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: And I paid 27.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: So the full coverage insurance for 27 grand is 105 a year.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: And I tell other people with new cars how much you pay.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: Well, even on that beater you're driving, they're paying$150,$200 a month.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: Another reason to buy a classic vintage car.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: Plus, it's cooler.
- 13:53Mike Marrs: Well, it it is, and and I've looked at we put some miles onto that truck, uh, the in-wheel time machine.
- 14:00Mike Marrs: And I've I've kind of looked at it and said, you know, what do we, you know, you start getting up$180,000,$190,000 miles, well, I thought about that.
- 14:09Mike Marrs: I always I worry about like I want to make like all right, you're going to Wyoming or something.
- 14:16Mike Marrs: If I go to someplace well, like Granbury, we go to Granberry for the Lone Star Street Rod Association.
- 14:21Mike Marrs: I'm thinking, well, that's five hours.
- 14:23Mike Marrs: If I got it, can I buy one?
- 14:25Mike Marrs: Then it's dependable enough that I know I can get there.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you can 350 Chevy.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you can.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: Or put a 302 in it.
- 14:33Mike Marrs: So you didn't think you can put the small block in it.
- 14:36SPEAKER_04: She made it that far in a 350.
- 14:39Mike Marrs: Well, that's that's what I'm thinking, but it's it's not just the motor in the the transmission, the brakes.
- 14:43Mike Marrs: I mean front end.
- 14:45Mike Marrs: Well, that's what I'm thinking.
- 14:46Mike Marrs: You know, you could build one that would do that.
- 14:50Mike Marrs: You could buy one already built.
- 14:52Mike Marrs: Well, that'd probably be cheaper.
- 14:54SPEAKER_04: How cool it would be you going to these car shows and you have a cool car.
- 14:59Mike Marrs: Uh uh Absolutely a metro van.
- 15:02Mike Marrs: Are you saying that that's not cool?
- 15:03Mike Marrs: Well, it looks all right.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: A metro van with all this built in.
- 15:12Mike Marrs: The problem is we go to a lot of places that like the Houston Auto Show or someplace where you can't take your thing out.
- 15:22SPEAKER_04: It's all about looking cool.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: You gotta look good no matter what, they'll come to you.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, see me pulling in NRG.
- 15:32SPEAKER_04: And if you have one, I mean that would be bad to the bones.
- 15:35Mike Marrs: I I I have seriously thought about, you know, particularly something like your your truck and uh the panel.
- 15:41Mike Marrs: And I thought I even looked at a couple of station wagons.
- 15:44Mike Marrs: I thought, you know, station wagons are kind of popular, but the the chairs and stuff they're not tall enough to put some of the gear in.
- 15:51Mike Marrs: So you just about got to have uh a truck or a van or a panel.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: Mid-70s custom Dodge van.
- 16:00Mike Marrs: I saw a short wheelbase Chevrolet with fender flares came up for sale the other day.
- 16:05Mike Marrs: Oh, yeah.
- 16:08Mike Marrs: That was in Pennsylvania or somewhere.
- 16:09SPEAKER_04: We'll be taking pictures of your vehicle.
- 16:12Mike Marrs: A shack and one shag carpet.
- 16:16Mike Marrs: That's what my son says.
- 16:17Mike Marrs: You want to put it in the top, put the shag carpet in the top.
- 16:20Mike Marrs: That's right.
- 16:21Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 16:24Mike Marrs: Yep.
- 16:26SPEAKER_04: You gotta look cool.
- 16:27SPEAKER_04: Uh I understand your wheel time.
- 16:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I can't have you some nice wheels.
- 16:33SPEAKER_04: I'm sorry.
- 16:34SPEAKER_04: Um there's nothing wrong with that.
- 16:36SPEAKER_04: It's got wheel time all over.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: It's just not the same.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: A 31 paddy wagon, it'd be tall enough for all this.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: Yes, that'd be nice.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: Put chains in the back.
- 16:47SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 16:48SPEAKER_04: You'd be riding in style, dude.
- 16:51SPEAKER_04: You'd be bad to the bone.
- 16:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 16:55SPEAKER_04: Go check out that wheel man.
- 16:57SPEAKER_04: Woo!
- 16:58Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 17:00Mike Marrs: We'll we'll we'll keep that in mind as we get a little bit further.
- 17:04Mike Marrs: I mean, you know, if you gotta go buy we'll help you find one.
- 17:06Mike Marrs: If you go buy a new truck, which is what I thought.
- 17:10Mike Marrs: Well, I I figure with the connections, I could probably get one for 60 or 70.
- 17:14Mike Marrs: They'll do what I want to do.
- 17:16Mike Marrs: It'll be a nice ride, but it looks like everybody else's truck, like you say.
- 17:27Mike Marrs: Yeah, the gentleman we were talking to earlier was talking about he he used to be a field engineer in some of the exploits of vehicles not making it 50 miles from the dealership and brand new.
- 17:39Mike Marrs: That could be a problem.
