- 0:00But this is a day of celebrating marriage, marriages.
- 0:06How many of you know when you go to a wedding,
- 0:08it reminds you of your first love? It reminds
- 0:12you maybe of your own wedding. And so today I
- 0:17was just, I kind of freaked Cole out a little
- 0:21bit. I think when he walked in thinking this
- 0:23was Marissa's gown. No, Marissa's taste is quite
- 0:27different. This is a Goodwill special. You'll
- 0:34be seeing what we do with that later. But today,
- 0:39the verse as we were preparing for this weekend,
- 0:43the verse out of Revelation 19, blessed are those
- 0:48who are invited to the wedding supper of the
- 0:52Lamb. Aren't you glad you are invited to the
- 0:57wedding supper? Have you ever known somebody
- 1:00and known they're getting married and no invite
- 1:02showed up in your mailbox? Or nowadays it's text.
- 1:07You know you didn't get a text or an email. And
- 1:10you're like, I feel a little left out. The good
- 1:13news today is that we all are invited to the
- 1:16wedding supper of the Lamb. And we're going to
- 1:21kind of work backwards from that. Because we
- 1:24are heading toward this marriage supper of the
- 1:27lamb. Now, this might be, and I feel for guys,
- 1:30I feel like guys, this is a little harder. Women,
- 1:33it's easy for us to identify as the bride of
- 1:36Christ, right? Some of us that have been married,
- 1:39we've been a bride. And the word talks about
- 1:43us being the bride. Jesus is our bridegroom.
- 1:47And one day we will be with him. Guys, you just
- 1:51got to get on board with this. that you are the
- 1:55bride of Christ. And I think of David, King David,
- 2:01because King David was like the elite warrior,
- 2:07wasn't he? He was the top of all of the warriors
- 2:12of the soldiers. And yet the other side of David
- 2:17was that he was a worshiper and a lover of God.
- 2:21And he wasn't afraid of that intimate nature
- 2:24of his relationship with God. So this morning,
- 2:29we're going to walk through. See, Jesus was a
- 2:33Jewish man. And so when we read in the Gospels,
- 2:37Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, we are reading
- 2:40into their Jewish culture, that Jewish context.
- 2:45So when we see how Jesus, he was born and the
- 2:50goal, right, was crucifixion and resurrection.
- 2:53But when we look at this overall life, we're
- 2:57looking at it as a Jewish man. So many of the
- 3:02things that Jesus did has so much significance
- 3:06when we recognize what his end goal was and when
- 3:12we recognize... what the ancient traditions of
- 3:16the Jewish marriage ceremony was. And so I want
- 3:20to encourage us today as we walk through this.
- 3:23There were four parts, four main parts of a Jewish
- 3:29wedding ceremony. And we're going to walk quickly
- 3:32through those four parts. And we're going to
- 3:35see it spiritually mirrored in the life of Christ
- 3:39and what he did for us in this invitation. And
- 3:44so the first part of the Jewish wedding was the
- 3:49betrothal. It was the proposal. Now, if you have
- 3:55not heard of the proposal, see, my husband, I
- 3:59don't know what he knew about me when we were
- 4:01getting engaged. But he took me for our engagement
- 4:07for his proposal. Do you think it was some nice,
- 4:10fancy place? I'll tell you, it was the nicest
- 4:19drive -in hot dog stand you could find in Peoria.
- 4:26And then he took me to a park where he carried
- 4:30a duffel bag. I'm like, what's up with this duffel
- 4:34bag? Well, it contained the ring. I look now
- 4:40on Facebook at all of the proposals. I'm like,
- 4:44man, it's another day here. Men have to really
- 4:48like plan out a proposal. What fascinates me
- 4:52is that they now have to do a dry run for prom
- 4:57dates. I mean, a prom date ask is like a little
- 5:03proposal to me. bringing cute cupcakes. I don't
- 5:08know what they're all doing, but I see all the
- 5:10mamas posting of these proposals for prom. I'm
- 5:16like, these guys are just having their dry run
- 5:19for the real deal. They're going to know what
- 5:21to do when it comes time to marry somebody. We
- 5:26didn't have media, online media, when we got
- 5:31proposed. There was no posting pictures of our
- 5:36of our proposal. In fact, years later, when Jeremy,
- 5:40our oldest, was a teenager, I said, Jeremy, because
- 5:44they were going to tear down Lou's drive -in.
- 5:47That's what it was, Lou's drive -in. And I said,
- 5:52I want you to come and I want you to get a picture
- 5:54of the sign of Lou's drive -in before they tear
- 5:58it down. And so I have that nicely framed in
- 6:02our bedroom for him, Lou's drive -in. So proposals
- 6:06today are a big deal, and everybody sees them.
- 6:11The proposals in the ancient Jewish tradition,
- 6:15there's no difference. The groom -to -be would
- 6:20travel to the wife's family, and when he arrives
- 6:25at the family home, he begins to negotiate the
- 6:28bridal price. He's got to pay a price. For this
- 6:34bride. And so negotiations begin. Once that negotiation
- 6:42has been accepted. And the bridal price has been
- 6:46settled. Then he takes the cup of wine. And he
- 6:51drinks of it. And then he offers her the cup.
- 6:57And if she says yes. She takes the cup. And she
- 7:02drinks of it. If she does not drink the cup,
- 7:07he's out of luck. She said no. So the cup is
- 7:13the significant question. It's the ask. I'm giving
- 7:18you this cup. Will you drink of it? Will you
- 7:20become mine? Will you become my bride? I think
- 7:27this is such a powerful mirror of Jesus. Jesus
- 7:33at the last supper, he took the cup and he gave
- 7:37thanks and he offered it to the disciples to
- 7:42drink of. Take this cup. Will you drink of it?
- 7:46Will you become mine? Will you say yes to me?
- 7:52And you know that he himself drank the cup first.
- 7:56As he's in the garden, he leaves that place and
- 7:59he heads out. And his next stop is the Garden
- 8:02of Gethsemane, where he's in anguish because
- 8:05he knows he's going to have to go to the cross.
- 8:07And what does he pray? Father, if it's your will,
- 8:11let this cup pass from me. Not my will, though,
- 8:18be done, but yours. Before he ever gives us this
- 8:23cup to drink, he drinks it of himself. And then
- 8:29he says here, as often as you drink of it, remember
- 8:34me. So just as that bride had a choice, yes,
- 8:43I'm going to take the cup. Jesus is standing
- 8:48and he's offering it to each of us. Will you
- 8:51drink of my cup? Will you say yes to me? Will
- 8:57you be my own? What's interesting here is that
- 9:02before they enter into the ceremony of becoming
- 9:09betrothed together, the bride and the groom will
- 9:13enter into the mikvah. the baptism waters. So
- 9:19before they come to this ceremony of the cup,
- 9:23they walk into the waters of betrothal baptism,
- 9:28a sign of a new life, a new season. And I was
- 9:32thinking, wow, Jesus, the life that Jesus lived
- 9:37was just so amazing because before he even came
- 9:41to the place of offering the cup, what did he
- 9:43first do? He entered in to the waters of baptism.
- 9:49Remember, John the Baptist said, Jesus, no, I'm
- 9:52not going to baptize you. You need to baptize
- 9:55me. And Jesus said, no, John, you're going to
- 9:57do this. This has to be done to fulfill righteousness.
- 10:02I have to be baptized, John. Jesus knew I'm entering
- 10:07into something. I'm entering into a betrothal
- 10:11with my bride, and I have to first walk through
- 10:14the waters of baptism. When I was doing marriage
- 10:21counseling with Cole and Marissa, some of our
- 10:25topics, because we talk about having a Christ
- 10:29-centered marriage. And in order to have a Christ
- 10:32-centered marriage, what has to happen? I have
- 10:35to be Christ -centered, and my spouse has to
- 10:38be Christ -centered, right? Otherwise, it's lopsided.
- 10:41It's not Christ -centered. So we were talking
- 10:44about this, and you remember just a few weeks
- 10:47ago, what did Marissa do? She entered into the
- 10:51waters of baptism. And we purposefully scheduled
- 10:55that Sunday. We were talking about you, Marissa.
- 10:59We're talking about the waters of baptism. We
- 11:01purposefully scheduled that because before coming
- 11:05to marriage, she wanted to enter into the waters
- 11:08of baptism, just like Jesus. Praise the Lord.
- 11:13And so here in the betrothal ceremony, we have
- 11:18the waters of baptism and we have the exchange
- 11:21of the cup. And then we move into the second
- 11:25stage now of this. And that is the separation
- 11:31and the preparation. So from this point of drinking
- 11:36the cup, the man leaves and goes back to his
- 11:41father's home. And she there in her father's
- 11:45home begins to prepare for her wedding, to prepare
- 11:48for her marriage. For a year, around a year.
- 11:55They are in this separation state. Darren and
- 12:00I had this because I was a junior in high school
- 12:03when we became engaged the summer before my senior
- 12:07year. That's what my mother said, and then she
- 12:11ran out of the room crying. Darren was left sitting
- 12:17with my dad all by himself. She loved Darren.
- 12:24She just didn't think that it was going to happen
- 12:27that soon, right after I graduated. It was a
- 12:33lot. You and her are a lot alike, Kathy. So for
- 12:40that year, I was engaged, and Darren headed to
- 12:43Missouri for a year of Bible college, and we
- 12:46have said that was a good thing, right? It was
- 12:50good for us to be separated for that year. When
- 12:54you're wanting to live in God's ways, right,
- 12:57then some healthy boundaries can be good. And
- 13:02so he spent that year writing me letters, and
- 13:05I was back at home trying to graduate and prepare
- 13:09for a wedding. In John chapter 14. Jesus says
- 13:18this, my father's house has many rooms. If that
- 13:23were not so, would I have told you that I am
- 13:27going there to prepare a place for you? And if
- 13:31I go and prepare a place for you, I will come
- 13:34back and I will bring you back with me where
- 13:38I am. You know the way to the place where I am
- 13:41going. Well, Thomas. And you know, you got to
- 13:47love Thomas. Thomas likes details. And Thomas
- 13:53said, Jesus, what are you talking about? What
- 13:56do you mean you know the way? I need to be sure
- 14:00that I know the way. Could you just clarify the
- 14:05way? And of course, Jesus says, I am the way,
- 14:09the truth, and the life. No one comes to the
- 14:11Father but through me. So here we have mirroring
- 14:17Jesus. He's saying, listen, I'm here with you
- 14:22now, but I am leaving. I am going away to my
- 14:26father's house. I'm offering you the cup. And
- 14:31so I want you to drink it and say yes, but then
- 14:34I'm going to go away to the father's house and
- 14:37I'm going to prepare for you. And this is the
- 14:41season we are living in, the season of separation.
- 14:46The season where we're waiting for Jesus to come
- 14:50back for his bride to take home. And what's interesting
- 14:57here is that it's not the groom who decides if
- 15:00it's time to go for the bride. I doubt he would
- 15:04have lasted a year were it up to him. It was
- 15:07up to the father of the groom. The father of
- 15:11the groom would decide and say, okay, son, it's
- 15:14time. Go get your bride. Do you know that Jesus
- 15:21himself said, I don't even know. I don't even
- 15:26know the times. Jesus himself. is preparing a
- 15:31place for us. And he's just waiting, just like
- 15:35we're waiting. And we're all waiting and longing
- 15:38for the Father to look at the Son and say, Jesus,
- 15:42go get the bride. Go get the bride. It's time.
- 15:47Go get the bride. And I guarantee you, Jesus
- 15:50won't be wasting any time. He's coming for his
- 15:53bride. Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. We should
- 15:58have hearts longing for this moment in which
- 16:01Jesus comes for us. Matthew 24, it says this,
- 16:07that no one knows, only the Father. Right? We
- 16:12just said that. Therefore, because we don't know,
- 16:15keep watch. Because you do not know on what day
- 16:21your Lord will come. So you must be ready. Because
- 16:26the son of man will come at an hour in which
- 16:29you do not expect him. We didn't know. They didn't
- 16:35know. The bride didn't know. She just had to
- 16:38be ready. She just had to be looking for when
- 16:43the bridegroom would show up to get her and take
- 16:47her back to the father. There is a readiness.
- 16:52that we have to walk in. There is a watchfulness
- 16:54that as the bride of Christ, we have our eyes.
- 16:58Where? Is he coming? Is it today? My eyes are
- 17:01lifted to the sky. Is he coming? Is he coming?
- 17:06The separation is a hard place. It can feel long,
- 17:11and we're going to see that in a minute. But
- 17:14there does come, eventually, the third part,
- 17:18which is the return for the bride. And so the
- 17:23groom, it is unannounced, and it is usually at
- 17:28night. It's usually at nighttime that he is showing
- 17:32up for the bride. His coming would be preceded
- 17:37by shouts. As he walked toward her home, there
- 17:45would be around him. the friends of the groom,
- 17:49and they would be calling out that the bridegroom
- 17:52was coming. And her bridal party, carrying lanterns,
- 17:58their lamps, would hear that call, and they would
- 18:02go out with their lamps to meet him and light
- 18:06the way to the bride. Beautiful. In this we see...
- 18:14where Christ returns for the church. And we see
- 18:18this in Matthew 25. We see the warning of this
- 18:26in Matthew 25, the parable that Jesus tells.
- 18:30At that time, the kingdom of heaven will be like
- 18:34ten virgins who took their lamps and went out
- 18:38to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish,
- 18:43and five were wise. The foolish ones took their
- 18:47lamps, but did not take any oil with them. The
- 18:53wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with
- 18:56their lamps. I'm glad to know I have a grandson
- 18:59who's wise. Our grandson is going to be nine
- 19:03in July, and in a week, Darren and the girls
- 19:07are taking him on his first Boundary Water camping
- 19:10trip. And so Edmund is a planner, and he's been
- 19:14walking through with Alexandra. Continually he
- 19:17calls and gets on video call to show his stuff,
- 19:20to show his supplies. And a big conversation
- 19:24is, do we have enough fuel? I have, how many
- 19:29cans do you have? I've got this many cans. And
- 19:32Alexandra's like, no, no, we don't need all that.
- 19:35We've got some. Well, just in case, should I
- 19:39bring this can of fuel? Listen, this is the heart
- 19:45of the wise virgin. I need to make sure I've
- 19:48got backup fuel. I don't want to run out just
- 19:52as the bridegroom is approaching. The bridegroom,
- 19:58though, was a long time in coming, and they all
- 20:01became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight, the
- 20:04cry rang out, here's the bridegroom, come out
- 20:08to meet him. All the virgins woke up and trimmed
- 20:12their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise,
- 20:15give us some of your oil, our lamps are going
- 20:19out. No, they replied, there may not be enough
- 20:22for both us and you. Instead, go to those who
- 20:25sell oil and buy some. But while they were on
- 20:28their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived.
- 20:31The virgins who were ready went with them to
- 20:34the wedding banquet, and the door was shut. Later,
- 20:37the others also came. Lord, Lord, open the door.
- 20:41But he said, truly I tell you, I don't know you.
- 20:46Listen, these virgins, this wedding party, they
- 20:55lost sight of what they were doing. They lost
- 21:00sight of their purpose. They lost sight of their
- 21:03mission, which was to be watching for the bridegroom
- 21:06ready to attend. They lost sight. This oil is
- 21:14so important because we're living in this place,
- 21:17aren't we? We're living in this separation place.
- 21:21And we have to be people that carry oil. Throughout
- 21:27the Bible, we see oil representing the Holy Spirit.
- 21:32And when Jesus left and was ascended into heaven,
- 21:35he said, now go wait for what? The Holy Spirit
- 21:40to be poured out. I'm leaving you, but listen,
- 21:44I'm leaving you with fuel. I'm leaving you with
- 21:48the power of the Holy Spirit. All through scripture,
- 21:54we see oil, and Holy Spirit. We see anointing
- 21:58for service. We see empowerment being set apart.
- 22:05In fact, even in Acts 10, God anointed Jesus
- 22:08of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. Always
- 22:12the anointing. How were they anointed in the
- 22:15Old Testament? With oil. With oil. And so in
- 22:21Romans 13, it says, do this, understanding the
- 22:24present time. The hour has come for you to wake
- 22:28up from your slumber because our salvation is
- 22:31nearer now than when we first believed. The night
- 22:37is nearly over. The day is almost here. So let's
- 22:41put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the
- 22:45armor of light. Every generation has longed and
- 22:49looked for the return of Christ. Listen. We're
- 22:53one generation closer. The next generation is
- 22:57going to say we're one generation closer. We're
- 23:00nearer now than we ever have been before. We've
- 23:04got to be filled with the oil of the Holy Spirit.
- 23:10We've got to be overflowing. The virgins obviously
- 23:14have been using their oil. They have been burning
- 23:18it, waiting for him to come. The problem was
- 23:21they weren't refilling. They weren't getting
- 23:24filled up again with the oil of the Holy Spirit.
- 23:27And so we are the light of the world. And that
- 23:32light is not fueled by me. It's not fueled by
- 23:35us. What is it fueled by? The Holy Spirit. who
- 23:40was given to us to be a testimony, to share the
- 23:46gospel of Jesus Christ. We've got to be filled
- 23:50up as we're awaiting our bridegroom with the
- 23:53oil of the Holy Spirit. Come, Lord Jesus, come.
- 23:58Come, Lord Jesus, come. And then finally, the
- 24:03fourth portion of this wedding. is the wedding
- 24:10feast, the glorious wedding feast. The bridegroom
- 24:15has announced his arrival. They have gone to
- 24:18meet him, and now he is taking back with him
- 24:22to his father's house his bride. Now here's the,
- 24:27here's now, I know we got, I think most of our
- 24:30kids left. I'm going to be very careful in how
- 24:32I say this, but here's what happens when the
- 24:36bridegroom takes the bride back. There's a little
- 24:41room for them that they go to to become husband
- 24:46and wife, where they culminate the wedding, where
- 24:53they become one as husband and wife. It's the
- 24:58first thing they do. Everybody is outside waiting.
- 25:03I know. How would you like that? I tell you,
- 25:07it was a little weird when my son got married
- 25:10and the next morning we all had breakfast together
- 25:13and they joined us. I don't know, you feel like
- 25:17you need a little distance from that. No, they
- 25:20were all waiting outside for the deed to be done
- 25:23when they came out. Some of you are turning red
- 25:30in the face. After that followed a seven -day
- 25:36feast. They had a great big party. Great big
- 25:40party. This is what we're looking for in the
- 25:46marriage supper of the Lamb. Now listen, I'm
- 25:50not being weird about our relationship with Jesus.
- 25:53When we talk about the bridegroom and the bride,
- 25:55it is not weird in that human sense. As we have
- 25:59already partaken of the body of Christ, We're
- 26:03going to take communion in a few moments. And
- 26:06we're going to partake of the body of Christ.
- 26:08And the heart of Jesus was that as I am one with
- 26:12the Father, I pray that also these children,
- 26:16these sons and daughters of God would be one
- 26:18with us. It is becoming one in spirit with Jesus.
- 26:24It is coming and being united in the Father's
- 26:27household with him again. So let's not get weird
- 26:31about that. But what he's really referring to
- 26:34is a union, a oneness. Just as the Father, Son,
- 26:39and Holy Spirit are one in the Trinity. The fulfillment
- 26:44will happen when he brings us home. And so we
- 26:46see this mirrored in Revelation 19. And in this
- 26:50passage down in verse 7, it says, let us rejoice
- 26:54and be glad. You got nothing to be glad and rejoice
- 27:01about in life. Here you go. Let us rejoice and
- 27:05be glad and give him glory for the wedding of
- 27:08the Lamb has come and his bride has made herself
- 27:13ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given
- 27:19her to wear. Fine linen stands for the righteous
- 27:23acts of God's holy people. Then the angel said
- 27:26to me, write this. Blessed are those who are
- 27:30invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb. The
- 27:38wedding of the Lamb has come and the bride has
- 27:40made herself ready. This is our end goal. This
- 27:46is the prize. The prize of Jesus is why we run
- 27:51our race. The prize of Jesus. is why we endure
- 27:56hardship. The prize of Jesus is why when things
- 28:00are going all wrong, we don't give up faith.
- 28:04Because ultimately our goal is not to find victory
- 28:07here on this earth, but to find victory and oneness
- 28:11with him at the marriage supper of the Lamb.
- 28:14And so we keep our eyes on the prize, who is
- 28:17Christ Jesus. This is going to be a joyous celebration,
- 28:22and I can't wait for it. Back when Jesus first
- 28:28offered the cup, he offered the cup and he said,
- 28:33now you take it and drink of it. You know what
- 28:36he said following that? He said, I will not drink
- 28:39from the fruit of this vine again until that
- 28:42day that I drink with you in the new heavens.
- 28:46He's saying, I'm looking. I'm looking forward
- 28:49to that day when you are with me in heaven and
- 28:52we will drink of this cup again. in person together.
- 28:56It's going to be beautiful. It's going to be
- 28:58beautiful. But my question today is this. What
- 29:01kind of fiancé are you going to be? What kind
- 29:06of fiancé am I going to be in this time of separation
- 29:10as we are anticipating the marriage supper of
- 29:14the Lamb? It's said there in that passage, the
- 29:18bride has made herself ready. We are in partnership
- 29:25with Holy Spirit of preparing our hearts, our
- 29:30lives for the marriage supper of the Lamb. The
- 29:37five virgins who were foolish had a problem.
- 29:42The bridegroom was a long time in coming and
- 29:46they became drowsy and they fell asleep. They
- 29:51lost their sense of expectancy. They lost their
- 29:56sense of anticipation. This is why Darren and
- 30:01I tell new couples all the time, we were giving
- 30:04his brother and his wife a hard time because
- 30:07she's not coming to family reunion this week
- 30:10because he can't come. And we're like, hey, separation
- 30:13is good for you. It's good sometimes to be apart
- 30:17because you remember again the anticipation of
- 30:23being together that you had at the beginning.
- 30:27Those five virgins lost their anticipation. They
- 30:33lost their expectancy. And you know what happens
- 30:36when we get drowsy and sleepy? We no longer live
- 30:42in a prepared state. We're no longer preparing
- 30:46ourselves. We grow complacent and indifferent
- 30:52when we grow sleepy and drowsy. You say, yeah,
- 30:57I've heard it for four decades. Jesus is coming
- 31:03again. I haven't seen him come yet, though. We
- 31:10can't grow weary. Can't lose heart. We have to
- 31:14stay in anticipation. When we grow sleepy and
- 31:19drowsy, we no longer take care of our garments,
- 31:23our wedding garments, our fine linen, our bright
- 31:27and clean clothes. We no longer take care of
- 31:30them. In the book of Ephesians, it says that
- 31:35Jesus is going to present. to himself a radiant
- 31:40church without stain, without wrinkle, or any
- 31:44other blemish, but holy and blameless. Listen,
- 31:50no bride. In fact, I saw your dress kind of laying
- 31:54on the couch, and I thought, oh man, maybe we
- 31:56need to hang it up. Right? It kind of worried
- 31:59me a little bit. Why? Because there's a protectiveness
- 32:03over our wedding linen. Our wedding clothes.
- 32:09But when we grow drowsy, when we begin to get
- 32:11sleepy, suddenly we begin to let things creep
- 32:16in. Suddenly we begin to engage in activities
- 32:24that stain us. There's no way I would wear my
- 32:28dress out to do certain things. It's set apart.
- 32:34But suddenly, when we're sleepy and drowsy and
- 32:37we lose our sense that he is about to return,
- 32:40we lose the sense of the imminent return of Christ.
- 32:44Suddenly, we begin to turn our gaze onto something
- 32:48that we shouldn't turn our gaze onto. I know,
- 32:53don't you just feel like I've defiled something?
- 32:56Suddenly, we're listening, we're allowing music
- 33:00that is not elevating us. but music that is marring
- 33:05us. We find ourselves entertaining in our minds
- 33:15and in our thoughts and in our heart. Negative
- 33:19thinking toward other people. Unforgiveness to
- 33:25other people. Judgments on other people. I think
- 33:36that one of the tools that the enemy most uses
- 33:41is not some horrific sin that we would never
- 33:46think of, but it's busyness. Oh, yeah. If he
- 33:51can keep us busy, he can keep us out of the affections
- 33:56of Jesus. Suddenly, we begin to entertain other
- 34:02idols. Anything that would steal our affection
- 34:07for God. Anything that we would put above our
- 34:12commitment to God. Our affections begin to move
- 34:16to others. Suddenly, you can name it for yourself.
- 34:25What yours is. This is not the bride. That Jesus
- 34:34is calling for. This is not the bride to be presented
- 34:38at the wedding supper of the lamb. We have to
- 34:44be busy about preparing and guarding our lives.
- 34:49That when the call comes, that when the trumpet
- 34:53sounds and we see our bridegroom approaching,
- 34:56we're not saying, oh, wait a minute, I've got
- 34:59to get ready. No, we're ready. Come look. Lord
- 35:03Jesus, come. It needs to be our daily cry. Come,
- 35:07Lord Jesus, come. Because if it's our daily cry,
- 35:11I guarantee you're living prepared. You're living
- 35:15prepared. I'm going to ask if the worship team
- 35:18would come. In a moment, we're going to partake
- 35:25of the communion table. And listen. This is not
- 35:31just about an outward appearance. Religion is
- 35:35about outward looking good on the outside and
- 35:37going home and treating your family poorly. This
- 35:40is not that. This here represents the inner life.
- 35:46The inner life in Christ. This represents the
- 35:52relationship with Christ. This isn't, we're going
- 36:01to be singing this in a moment. This really is
- 36:03not about us living perfect. Sometimes you're
- 36:08going to just by engaging in life, you're going
- 36:10to find a little bit. You're just doing life.
- 36:13And as you're doing life, you know what? Oh,
- 36:15you got something on that. This is not about
- 36:19perfection. When this happens, we just have to
- 36:22come back to the table of the Lord and drink
- 36:24of the cup and he cleanses us and washes us.
- 36:28That is part of the preparing for the return
- 36:31of the bridegroom, being washed by the bridegroom.
- 36:36This is about a state of the heart. And this
- 36:41is why we can identify with King David so much,
- 36:44who God said, he's got a heart after me. And
- 36:49yet we find him committing adultery. We find
- 36:52him murdering. When the prophet comes and confronts
- 37:00him in that moment, he says, that's me. I repent.
- 37:07And he walks through a season of repentance and
- 37:10then God restores him. And he goes on. He leaves
- 37:14his place of repentance and he goes into the
- 37:19sanctuary and begins to worship. And he writes
- 37:22Psalm 51, wash me and I will be whiter than snow.
- 37:27If I had a big old tide stick, I'd just take
- 37:30it right all over there. This morning, you're
- 37:37going to be offered the cup. And in this house,
- 37:42we practice open communion. You do not have to
- 37:45be a regular attender or member here. You are
- 37:47welcome to partake in communion if you have said
- 37:50yes to Jesus, if you have decided to follow Jesus.
- 37:56And so in a moment, we're going to be giving
- 37:58you the bread and the cup. And as you take the
- 38:02cup this morning, you have a choice. And maybe
- 38:09you have never made the choice to receive the
- 38:15sacrifice of Jesus. Maybe you've never made the
- 38:18choice to be a follower of Jesus. You are welcome.
- 38:22It's very simple. You take the cup and you say,
- 38:26yes. Yes, Jesus. I am yours and you are mine.
- 38:32Yes. And maybe you have already been a follower
- 38:38of Jesus. And you're saying, you know what, though?
- 38:42I've gotten a little bit of a stain. I've been
- 38:48maybe doing some things that aren't preparing
- 38:50me for the return of the bridegroom. Here's your
- 38:54good news. You partake of the cup and the bread,
- 38:57and with sincerity of heart, you say, wash me,
- 39:01Jesus, and I will be clean. I will be whiter
- 39:04than snow. And so as we partake of this today,
- 39:10whichever place you are in, as you take of the
- 39:15communion, you're simply saying yes. You're simply
- 39:20renewing. You're renewing first love. You're
- 39:24renewing your bridal place and your bridal commitment.
- 39:28And you're fixing your eyes on the return of
- 39:33the bridegroom. Amen. And so I'm going to invite
- 39:37our ushers to come. And as they come, they're
- 39:41going to offer you communion. And let's just
- 39:43as they do for a few moments, we're just going
- 39:45to worship as they distribute this morning.
