- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Hi everyone! Ready for episode 99? Lucas: So close to 100. Today, we are going to the market again, but this time, we are focusing on asking for prices. Luna: Oh, good. Because I always feel a bit lost when I see something and I don't know how much it costs. Lucas: Exactly. So the key phrase is 'Berapa harga ini?' — how much is this? Luna: Berapa harga ini? Lucas: Great. Berapa means how much, harga means price, ini means this. So, Berapa harga ini? Luna: Berapa harga ini. That's clear. Lucas: Let's use it. Imagine you see a nice bag. You point and say 'Berapa harga ini?' Luna: Berapa harga ini? How much is this? Lucas: Exactly. And if you think the price is too high, you can say 'Boleh murah sikit?' — can it be cheaper a little? Luna: Boleh murah sikit? That's bargaining, right? Lucas: Yes. Boleh means can, murah means cheap, sikit means a little. So, Boleh murah sikit? Luna: Boleh murah sikit. I like that. Lucas: Now, if you decide to buy, you say 'Saya nak beli ini.' — I want to buy this. Luna: Saya nak beli ini. Nak is short for hendak, right? Lucas: Right. Saya nak beli ini. Very common. Luna: OK. And if I think it's too expensive, I can say 'Mahal sangat!'? Lucas: Yes! Mahal sangat — very expensive. Mahal means expensive, sangat means very. So, Mahal sangat! Luna: Mahal sangat! That's useful. Lucas: And after bargaining, if you agree on a price, you say 'OK, saya ambil.' — OK, I'll take it. Luna: Saya ambil. I take it. Lucas: Yes. Let's practice the whole conversation. I'll be the seller, you be the buyer. Luna: OK. Berapa harga ini? Lucas: Seller says 'Dua puluh ringgit.'. Luna: Mahal sangat! Boleh murah sikit? Lucas: Seller says 'Boleh. Lima belas ringgit.'. Luna: OK, saya ambil. Great! Lucas: Perfect. You just bargained in Malay. Luna: That felt good. And you know what? If this episode helps you, maybe you can support us. Lucas: Yeah, if learning Malay with Fexingo has been worth a coffee to you, you can find us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Just a small way to keep the show going. Now, back to bargaining. Lucas: Let's repeat all five phrases. First: Berapa harga ini? Luna: Berapa harga ini? Lucas: Boleh murah sikit? Luna: Boleh murah sikit? Lucas: Saya nak beli ini. Luna: Saya nak beli ini. Lucas: Mahal sangat! Luna: Mahal sangat! Lucas: OK, saya ambil. Luna: OK, saya ambil. Lucas: Excellent. Now let's do a quick role play. You see a shirt at a market. Luna: Berapa harga ini? Lucas: Seller: 'Tiga puluh ringgit.' Luna: Mahal sangat! Boleh murah sikit? Lucas: Seller: 'Dua puluh lima ringgit.' Luna: Saya nak beli ini. Lucas: Wait, you said 'Saya nak beli ini' before agreeing on the price? Usually you say 'OK, saya ambil' after you agree. Luna: Oh right! OK, saya ambil. I'll take it. Lucas: There you go. So remember the order: ask price, bargain, then say 'OK, saya ambil'. Luna: Got it. Berapa harga ini, then Boleh murah sikit, then OK saya ambil. Lucas: You're a natural. Practice these phrases, and next time you're at a pasar, you'll sound like a local. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. See you next time, everyone! Lucas: Thanks for listening to Learn Malay with Fexingo. Keep practicing!
