- 0:12Hello friends, It is Monday. It is the 18th of March and
- 0:19hello to a new week welcome. So glad that you could invite me
- 0:23into your day. No matter what it's looking
- 0:25like, whether it's full, whether you have got all the time in the
- 0:29world, or whether you are in the midst of it all or even finished
- 0:32with it. Tucking yourself into bed
- 0:34thinking Monday, I laugh at Monday.
- 0:38Bring on Tuesday wherever you are in the spectrum of
- 0:41mundaneness. Hope you're not having a heart
- 0:43attack, because more people have heart attacks on Monday than any
- 0:46other day of the week. Bahama.
- 0:48So if you made it through today, well done, you've survived
- 0:51another Monday. But all that aside, today we
- 0:54continue marching through the book of Mark.
- 0:57We are getting close to the middle, where Peter is going to
- 1:01correctly identify that Jesus is indeed the Son of God.
- 1:06But we're not quite there yet. Mark is still building this
- 1:10argument, building this case that we as the readers can be so
- 1:17clearly convinced by the evidence that yes, he is indeed
- 1:21who he says he is. So why don't we continue going
- 1:26back, joining in hearing, seeing, reliving Jesus as he
- 1:32walks through the streets and blows away the world with his
- 1:37incredible love and compassion? Let's do it, shall we?
- 1:42Let's read together. Mark Chapter 7.
- 1:55One day, some parasites and teachers of religious law
- 1:58arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus.
- 2:01They noticed that some of his disciples failed to follow the
- 2:04Jewish ritual of hand washing before eating.
- 2:07The Jews, especially the varices, do not eat until
- 2:11they've poured water over their cupped hands, as required by
- 2:15their ancient traditions. Similarly, they don't eat
- 2:18anything from the market until they have immersed their hands
- 2:21in water. This is but one of many
- 2:24traditions they have clung to, such as their ceremonial washing
- 2:27of cups, pitches and kettles. So the Pharisees and teachers of
- 2:33religious law asked him, why don't your disciples follow our
- 2:37age old tradition? They eat without first
- 2:40performing their hand washing ceremony, Jesus replied.
- 2:45You hypocrites, Aziah was right when he prophesied about you for
- 2:50he wrote. These people honour me with
- 2:53their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
- 2:57Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as
- 3:01commands from God. For you ignore God's law and
- 3:06substitute your own tradition. Then, he said, you skillfully
- 3:11sidestep God's law in order to hold onto your own traditions.
- 3:17For instance, Moses gave you this law from God.
- 3:21Honour your father and mother, and anyone who speaks
- 3:25disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.
- 3:29But you say it's all right for people to say to their parents,
- 3:33sorry, I can't help you, for I vowed to give to God what I
- 3:37would have given to you. In this way, you let them
- 3:42disregard their needy parents, and so you cancelled the word of
- 3:46God in order to hand down your own tradition.
- 3:50And this is only one example among many others.
- 3:54Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear all of you.
- 3:58Listen, he said, And try to understand.
- 4:02It's not what goes into your body that defiles you.
- 4:06You are defiled by what comes from your heart.
- 4:10Then Jesus went into a house to get away from the crowd, and his
- 4:14disciples asked him what he meant by the parable he had just
- 4:17used. Don't you understand either?
- 4:20He asked. Can't you see that the food you
- 4:23put into your body cannot defile you?
- 4:26Food doesn't go into your heart, but only passes through your
- 4:29stomach and then goes into the sewer.
- 4:33By saying this, he declared that every kind of food is acceptable
- 4:37in God's eyes. And then, he added, it is what
- 4:41comes from inside that defiles you.
- 4:44For from within, out of a person's heart, come evil
- 4:48thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed,
- 4:54wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride,
- 5:01and foolishness. All these vile things come from
- 5:05within. They are what defile you.
- 5:10Then Jesus left Galilee and went N to the region of Tyre.
- 5:15He didn't want anyone to know which house he was staying in,
- 5:18but he couldn't keep it a secret.
- 5:21Right away. A woman who had heard about him
- 5:23came and fell at his feet. Her little girl was possessed by
- 5:27an evil spirit and she begged him to cast out the demon from
- 5:31her daughter. Since she was a gentile born in
- 5:34Syrian Phoenicia, Jesus told her first I should feed the
- 5:40children, my own family, the Jews.
- 5:43It isn't right to take food from the children and throw it to the
- 5:47dogs, she replied. That's true, Lord, but even the
- 5:52dogs under the table are allowed to eat the scraps from the
- 5:55children's plates. Good answer, he said.
- 6:00Now go home, for the demon has left your daughter.
- 6:05And when she arrived home, she found her little girl lying
- 6:09quietly in bed, and the demon was gone.
- 6:15Jesus left Tyre and went up to Sidon before going back to the
- 6:19Sea of Galilee and the region of the 10 towns.
- 6:23A deaf man with a speech impediment was brought to him,
- 6:26and the people begged Jesus to lay his hands on the man to heal
- 6:30him. Jesus led him away from the
- 6:32crowd so they could be alone. He put his fingers into the man
- 6:36ears. Then, spitting on his own
- 6:39fingers, he touched the man's tongue.
- 6:42Looking up to heaven, he sighed and said EFF Utah, which means
- 6:49be opened instantly. The man could hear perfectly,
- 6:54and his tongue was freed so he could speak plainly.
- 6:58Jesus told the crowd not to tell anyone, but the more he told
- 7:02them not to, the more they spread the news.
- 7:05They were completely amazed and said again and again, everything
- 7:11he does is wonderful. He even makes the deaf to hear
- 7:15and gives speech to those who cannot speak.
- 7:28Jesus, we see so clearly your heart in this reading.
- 7:32Your heart for your people. You love them and you want them
- 7:36to be well and Hull. You want us to be well and to be
- 7:41whole and you do not tolerate religion.
- 7:46That piles unnecessary burden onto your people.
- 7:51You want us to have a load that is light and life giving.
- 7:58Thank you. Thank you that you bring healing
- 8:02and kindness and release Jesus. I pray in the areas of our lives
- 8:10where we are struggling. I just pray that you would bring
- 8:14your release, bring your healing.
- 8:22You are a good God, a good God who brings good things to your
- 8:25children. And we are so grateful, so we
- 8:29pray all of this and you're saving name.
- 8:32Jesus, oh man.
