- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Nebraska's Morning News. Now here, the News Radio
- 0:03Speaker 1: 1110 KFAB Certified Transmission Sports Brief. It's the Husker Buzz edition.
- 0:08Speaker 1: We've got Sean Callahan and Jim Rose. All right, Sean,
- 0:10Speaker 1: are you dry?
- 0:11Speaker 2: You people in Lincoln got 10 inches of rain, almost
- 0:13Speaker 2: 11 inches of rain.
- 0:14Speaker 3: You people. Yeah, it was a hurricane. coming down here
- 0:19Speaker 3: last night. It was incredible. I'll be interested in what
- 0:22Speaker 3: those grass practice fields look like for Nebraska today. Luckily,
- 0:26Speaker 3: they've got indoor options, but I wouldn't be surprised if
- 0:28Speaker 3: the drainage is so good there that they're probably out
- 0:31Speaker 3: there and they'll look great today.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Well, I'm sure your daughter, who's a world-class swimmer, future
- 0:35Speaker 2: Olympic gold medalist, was out there doing laps in the
- 0:37Speaker 2: front yard.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Yeah. Instead of the Devaney Center, they're going to go
- 0:42Speaker 3: out to the Salt Creek and swim some laps up
- 0:44Speaker 3: and down the creek as well. That thing's probably about
- 0:47Speaker 3: as high as we've seen it.
- 0:48Speaker 2: It's a raging river. All right, Nebraska versus Maryland on
- 0:52Speaker 2: Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock on FS1. If you're wondering
- 0:56Speaker 2: whether Mike Loxley expects to be the coach of Maryland
- 1:00Speaker 2: next year, wonder no more. Yesterday he said we need
- 1:03Speaker 2: to adjust Malik Washington's pre-read snaps. Pre-snap reads, I should say,
- 1:10Speaker 2: which is what the quarterback looks at and then checks
- 1:12Speaker 2: down to a different play depending on the defensive alignment.
- 1:15Speaker 2: That is a desperate move, Sean. That guy is not
- 1:18Speaker 2: an inexperienced quarterback. And if we're still talking about pre-snap reads,
- 1:22Speaker 2: they've got problems.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Yeah, he's a talented quarterback. Started as a true freshman
- 1:26Speaker 3: last year, and then he's four games into his sophomore
- 1:29Speaker 3: year and had his worst game of his career. And
- 1:33Speaker 3: I think they got everyone by surprise because he hadn't
- 1:36Speaker 3: put up a game to that caliber with multiple pick-sixes,
- 1:39Speaker 3: four interceptions. And, you know, give UCLA credit. I mean,
- 1:43Speaker 3: they are, to me, one of the better stories right
- 1:46Speaker 3: now in the Big Ten. And you look at UCLA,
- 1:49Speaker 3: their schedule is very favorable. They don't have Ohio State
- 1:52Speaker 3: on it. They don't have Indiana. They don't have Iowa.
- 1:57Speaker 3: I mean, they easily could be a 9-3 type team
- 2:00Speaker 3: this year and, you know, borderline playoff team, depending on
- 2:03Speaker 3: how they do in some of their bigger games here.
- 2:05Speaker 3: So a tough loss for Maryland. But I think UCLA
- 2:08Speaker 3: might be one of the better stories going in the
- 2:10Speaker 3: league at this point.
- 2:11Speaker 2: And the Big Ten had its injury report, the midweek
- 2:14Speaker 2: injury report. Every school, it's just like the NFL used
- 2:17Speaker 2: to do on Wednesday. They say who's going to play,
- 2:19Speaker 2: who might play, who's definitely going to play. And it
- 2:22Speaker 2: looks like Jamal Rule is out. Ja'Cory Barney is questionable.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Anybody else on that list strike you as important?
- 2:30Speaker 3: Yeah, Jamal Rule officially listed as doubtful. Ja'Cory Barney, questionable.
- 2:35Speaker 3: And then Brennan Black, a starting guard for Nebraska, listed
- 2:39Speaker 3: as probable. Those were the three names. big names on
- 2:42Speaker 3: the report, and the guys that left the game at
- 2:46Speaker 3: Michigan State. So it kind of, again, tells you that
- 2:49Speaker 3: we're probably going to see Mekhi Nelson and Mosey have
- 2:54Speaker 3: to split up a lion's share of the carries with
- 2:56Speaker 3: Vince Genitone probably being the short yardage guy. Between that trio,
- 3:01Speaker 3: you're probably looking at, ideally, hopefully 30 carries.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Genitone is now the flavor of the week at Nebraska football,
- 3:08Speaker 2: the walk-on from North Platte, Nebraska. They really love him
- 3:12Speaker 2: out there, and his conversion from linebacker to running back
- 3:15Speaker 2: is harder to do than most. Give us the story
- 3:18Speaker 2: on Vince.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Well, he's not your typical walk-on. He's the most explosive
- 3:23Speaker 3: athlete on the team, has a broad jump of over
- 3:26Speaker 3: 11 feet and a 42-inch vertical, and he ran a 10.500
- 3:30Speaker 3: in high school. He was a Class A two-time 220-pound
- 3:33Speaker 3: state champion wrestler. and was one of the leaders in
- 3:38Speaker 3: the state in tackle. So on paper, in my time
- 3:41Speaker 3: doing this, that's about as good of a resume as
- 3:43Speaker 3: you'll see. He went to Montana on a full ride.
- 3:47Speaker 3: His family moved here from Wyoming when they took a
- 3:50Speaker 3: job at the North Platte Hospital with a doctor that
- 3:53Speaker 3: they worked with in Wyoming, and they're still there. They're
- 3:55Speaker 3: still in North Platte. They came here in 2020. So
- 3:59Speaker 3: they're not native Nebraskans by any means, but they are now,
- 4:02Speaker 3: and they love Nebraska and Just a neat family. Vince's sister, Madison,
- 4:08Speaker 3: actually joined the UNL flag football program this year. She's
- 4:12Speaker 3: the first in-state player. So there's two genitones playing football
- 4:14Speaker 3: in Nebraska, which is also its own unique story. But
- 4:17Speaker 3: Vince is a guy that has kept his head down
- 4:19Speaker 3: and is highly respected in the locker room. Got his chance.
- 4:24Speaker 3: And those that know him are not surprised by this.
- 4:27Speaker 3: You've got an era where players ahead of you are
- 4:30Speaker 3: getting paid, and there are scholarship guys. The guy not
- 4:33Speaker 3: getting paid, who's a walk-on, doesn't always get a chance. Well,
- 4:36Speaker 3: he finally got his chance, and then you saw what
- 4:38Speaker 3: he could do.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I don't know how, with that high school resume, he
- 4:42Speaker 2: isn't a power four conference athlete. Start with the wrestling,
- 4:45Speaker 2: move to the track speed. You can't coach speed. How
- 4:48Speaker 2: did they miss a guy like that, a Class A
- 4:51Speaker 2: kid from Nebraska?
- 4:52Speaker 3: Well, he's from North Platte, first of all, so you
- 4:55Speaker 3: kind of get off the radar at that point. But
- 4:58Speaker 3: his measurable was like just under six foot tall. He's
- 5:02Speaker 3: like 5'11 and three quarters, maybe six foot. So I
- 5:05Speaker 3: think that always dinged him in the process that he
- 5:08Speaker 3: wasn't a true like 6'2 guy. Because other than that, again,
- 5:11Speaker 3: I've never seen the combination ever of a wrestler who
- 5:16Speaker 3: You know, it's 250-220 that wins state, dominated state. You know,
- 5:21Speaker 3: he beat a Westside kid his senior year in the finals.
- 5:23Speaker 3: It was an unbelievable match where two kids went back
- 5:26Speaker 3: and forth. Then runs 10-5. You don't see that combo
- 5:29Speaker 3: ever because usually wrestlers aren't very good wrestlers. And, you know,
- 5:34Speaker 3: when you can broad jump over 11 feet, I mean,
- 5:37Speaker 3: that's better than guys at the NFL Combine. All right. Thanks, Sean.
- 5:40Speaker 1: That's the Husker Buzzing, 11-10 KFA Beats.
