- 7:48Wife got this telegram at eight o'clock tonight. Western Union people notified us.
- 7:55I have your husband. I want ten ten twenties, fifties. I'll let
- 8:00you know where you can pick him up. You call him a police you
- 8:03we can't stand by him. It was phoned into the office from a pay
- 8:05booth, and I've had no way to track it down. Let's see that,
- 8:09ben, Now, this is the story. Drinker called his wife from
- 8:13his office last night about six and said he had some work to get out.
- 8:16Missus Drinkler called him back there about nine, and he said he'd be
- 8:18home by midnight. Miss Drinkler went on to bed. When she got up
- 8:22this morning, she assumed he'd left the house already, but when he didn't
- 8:24show up for dinner tonight, she got worried and phoned the office. They
- 8:28told her he hadn't been in all day long. Missus Drinkler was phoning friends
- 8:31around town looking for him when the wire came in. Small got there about
- 8:35half an hour after the messenger. Boy, he's still there now. I
- 8:39sent a detail down to Drinker's office. Murphy and Crockett talked to his secretary
- 8:43and office manager. They want much help. People who work in a building
- 8:46night watchman and scrub lady said Drinkler had a visitor about ten o'clock last night.
- 8:50Tall man, well dressed. Heave a pretty hazy description. Could have
- 8:54been anyone. We're checking it out that all that's about it. Drinkles's car
- 8:58still parked in the rear of the building. Something may turn it later on.
- 9:01Right now, we're going to have to play along. What happened.
- 9:05This drinker didn't have any trouble getting the money. It's being marked right now.
- 9:07Boys are working on it. You know what we're up against. Ben,
- 9:11can't spend too much time. We'll have to figure it out as we
- 9:13go along. Here's the address, three thirteen Cherry Drive, straight out York.
- 9:16Did you get to the parkway, then right, two blocks beyond the
- 9:20golf course. Take seventeen. K's cleared with the motor pool. Okay,
- 9:24place might be watched. Park down the street and go in the alleyway.
- 9:28I've got units here, here, here, and here, radio controls all
- 9:35set up right. The contact will be by phone or message again, it's
- 9:39the only way right now we can depend on getting any kind of lead.
- 9:41Small ad lipapys and some men from the crime labber out there. Federal man
- 9:46should be along pretty soon. I'll bring Cargo and quin out with me later
- 9:50on. Okay, that's it all right. I'll use anything anyone do anything
- 9:56that occurs to you. Ben, I'll be right with you all the way.
- 10:00Okay, Oh uh Bill, huh, how's missus Drinkler taking it?
- 10:05He wants her husband back him? Hi, Ben, Asher, Hi this
- 10:26way, This is Drinklers in the next room. She's scared, silly.
- 10:37Can you blame her? No, but we're gonna need her if they happen
- 10:41to call. Yeah, lab put in another line here, and three extensions
- 10:45on the original line. This one in here, one on the floor below
- 10:48us in the kitchen, and one in the hallway. All right, Asher,
- 10:52take the extra line and check the telephone company, and keep all the
- 10:54lights out except in the living room right there. They tricked up with any
- 11:01call comes in or go on the tape automatically the minute the connection's made,
- 11:03circuits wide open. What do you think then she got the wire three hours
- 11:09ago. I don't think they take any chance of taking the place out to
- 11:13see what she did. It's still good right now, holding him a whole
- 11:16day before contacting her. And there's a chance I'll calling tonight sometime. If
- 11:22they cast it at all, he could have smoked been yeah, thanks anybody
- 11:31else in the house. Boys in Europe, This summer cook left two days
- 11:35ago on the week's vacation. Missus Drinkler has been holding it down. Well,
- 11:39I guess I better. Oh, feeling a little better, Missus Drinkler.
- 11:43I don't all go away. Why don't you leave my home. We
- 11:48want to help you, ma'am. This is Lieutenant Guthrie. Take these men
- 11:52away, Missus Drinkler. We're going to do everything humanly possible to bring your
- 11:58husband back, yes, safely, and to get the people responsible for taking
- 12:01him. I we should try to see it our way my husband. I

- 12:18none of you. They'll get frightened and they know you're here. They'll kill
- 12:22him. They'll kill it. There's nothing to stop them, there's everything to
- 12:26stop them. They know that the police and federal people would never stop looking
- 12:28from him if they did that. We don't really believe that, Lieutenant.
- 12:31I know you don't. I've been sitting in my room thinking about it.
- 12:39They kill him because there's no reason to keep him alive. Get doctor Gerson
- 12:46right reason at all? Now you people are here and they'll kill him because
- 12:50you're here. Wouldn't you like to go? You're here? Why are you
- 12:54here to get your husband back alive? No, that is true. He's
- 13:00been missing a whole day. You think kid's already dead. Don't you please?

- 13:35Yeah? Oh, this is Officer Grace Hanley Ben Hello, Grace.
- 13:39You know the setup. Everything may depend on the way you answer that phone
- 13:43of the kidnapper calls INET. I tried to stall him, do anything,
- 13:48so we'll stay on the wire long enough to trace it. You can take
- 13:50it in here. I'll be downstairs. Make yourself comfortable. Oh, don't
- 13:58jump out. If he rings, I want to hear his voice, so
- 14:00we'll have to pick it up together. I know anything more on that description.

- 18:11use what we have. Tall man who drives a black forty six Cadillac Sadan.
- 18:15That's all we know about him. We want to know a lot more.
- 18:18Fete ye, all right, come on up a little closer. Here.
- 18:25Here's a city park covered on the east by Federal Boulevard, west by
- 18:30Franklin Street thirty third runs to the south Parkway to the north sixteen Road,
- 18:34entrances to the park. Now here's the way it will work. Two men
- 18:38to work car, one car to every entrance. We start numbering them from
- 18:42the Federal Boulevard entrance one, and then here's two and three and so on.
- 18:48You men will be in cars covering the entrances. There'll be other units
- 18:52working Federal, Franklin, thirty third and Parkway. What about the museum itself?
- 18:56Then? Yeah, well, I can't take a chance. We like
- 18:59to have some men in there because it's nearest to the Fountain meeting place,
- 19:02but someone in the museum might be connected with it. There's no way to
- 19:06station or hire a police officer around that. Fountain Park Commission is going to
- 19:10help us. Only can a whole things pretty much up to us. We
- 19:14hope the kidnapper shows up to get his money. We hope he'll drive the
- 19:18black Cadillac. We hope he's a tall man and that we recognize him.
- 19:22How's the other part of it going to work? Officer Grace Handley is going
- 19:25to fill in again. He'll wear one of Missus Drinkless coats and she'll drive

- 19:48Right? Then Israel and Todd fifty k g one. How does it
- 19:59look? Oh? Seems like the best thing we can do. Try to
- 20:02Sucker and then a trip. I don't like it. You neither to mind,
- 20:06though, Bird's really done a slick job. Not one lead, nothing
- 20:10we can get hold of man, anything new in the car, not even
- 20:14if possible. Benny's got us. The whole force has been alerted. Drinkly's
- 20:18description has been broadcast every half hour since nine o'clock last night. The kidnapper
- 20:22and the cars on the wire all over the country, and Stelly's got us.
- 20:26I don't want anybody taking a break until we get him, right though,
- 20:33gualdo hold it? Ben? Yeah, yeah, okay, let's check
- 20:42it out by small man at the diner picked one. A guy named Charles
- 20:49Newton says he looks like the man who was with Drinkler. Here it has
- 21:06been okay, where's the makeshift? Oh, Charles Edward Newton, male,
- 21:12Caucasian, age thirty one. I had six feet two inches, white,

- 21:23five seven six a Gilpen Avenue. Previous arrests contact August three, nineteen.
- 21:32There's a MA machine here, Yeah, there's not much on it. He's
- 21:34from the Pika, Kansas. Okay, let me see that doesn't look much
- 21:40like a kidnapper has he been? I don't know what's the kidnapper supposed to
- 21:45look like? Here, it's paint fifty seven sixty eight. Yeah, at
- 22:03least the dogs at home? Yeah yeah, what is it? Police officers?
- 22:11We'd like to ask a few questions. Please you say yeah, you
- 22:14like to come in? Well, thank you very much. What is it?
- 22:18What's wrong? We'd like to know your name, Julie Newton new Newton,
- 22:21min. What's your husband's name, Sad Newton. I'd like to know
- 22:23why you're here. We're trying to locate a man named Charles Edward Newton.
- 22:26We understand he lived here once. Oh no, you're mistaken, child,
- 22:30you never lived with us. Oh well then you'll know him. Well,
- 22:33Childie's sad brothers. But he just had his mails in here. He never
- 22:36lived here. Well do you know where he's living now? See in trouble.
- 22:38We just want to talk to him. Man. You know his address?
- 22:41Oh yeah, I have it written down. I have it somewhere here.
- 22:45Oh yeah, here it is. You're thirty five thirty five Columbine Street,
- 22:51Columbine, Yes, thirty five thirty five Combine Street, Kansas City,
- 22:55Missouri. How long has he lived there? Is it Newton? Oh?
- 22:57Month? I guess last time we saw him, he said he's on his
- 23:00way, and that's five weeks ago. Anyhow, Uh, you know where
- 23:03he actually lived here in town? No? Bad told me Charlie wasn't well.
- 23:07He got in trouble. Now then John only came here twice now and
- 23:11then he calls if he had any mail or phone calls, but he never
- 23:15let us know where he lived. Did he have any mail? A phone
- 23:17call? Once? A girl called up. I think she was from a
- 23:19used car lot in town, but that's all. Charlie called up later and
- 23:22I told him about it. Now, when was this toy left? Did
- 23:26Charlie have a car? No? I think he bought ones in that lot.
- 23:30Do you remember the name of the used kind of one Empire Motors.
- 23:33I think it's called I'm not sure you know what kind of a car he
- 23:37boy, Well, it's the one he drove by, and it's a real
- 23:38nice one. And he came by it to give us this address just before
- 23:41he laughed he was driving a real nice car. When I asked him he's
- 23:45gonna buy it? He said he thought he would. It was a used
- 23:47one, but it was very nice Cadillac big black today Carl was purchased with
- 24:04the last month manth to used Carl. I identified the mug, but saleslip
- 24:08showed Newton used the name Raymond Atlas, same address on Gilpen. Yeah,
- 24:12put a supp line, y apb fills out a lot better. Now had
- 24:15a complete description on Newton and the car. Yeah, he's somewhere in town.
- 24:21Least he wait yesterday anything from Kansas City. Yeah, it just came
- 24:25in No Columbine Street there, Yeah, yeah, three thirty going out to
- 24:30the park. Reason and I hope we don't have to get anything out of
- 24:33Newton's brother. He said he didn't have much to do with Charles. Thought
- 24:37he might have worked as a cook. And when a drinkler's restaurants once didn't
- 24:40know checking him out, he set it up on he's shooting in Hi,
- 24:45ben Coin Hi. I talked to the bod tender in one of the Curtis
- 24:48Bob remember Newton coming in there off and on for a year. Says he
- 24:51came in about a month ago and told everybody he was leaving town. I
- 24:53haven't seen him since. Oh excuse me. That's about the only place we
- 24:57had listed on his mama sheep. Yeah. Yeah, well he's covering up
- 25:02everything. Yeah, Peach waiting before you in the garage. Okay, oh
- 25:07did small check in? Yeah? Missus Drinkler had a stroke. Man,

- 28:56you passed the innocent, the vagrant, the thief, the murderer. Listen
- 29:02again next week when we again bring you the lineup. Hey, I have
- 29:06your attention. Please, you people out there on the other side of the
- 29:08wire in the audience room, may I have your attention? Please, thank
- 29:11you. My name is Corgar, Sergeant Pete Carger. I'll explain the lineup
- 29:15to you. Each of the suspects you will see will be numbers. I'll
- 29:18call up a number the name of charge. Do you have any questions identifications?
- 29:22Please remember the number of signed of the prisoner as I call his names
- 29:26the end of each line. When I asked for questions or identifications, called
- 29:29out the number. If you are showing the lineup starring Bill Johnstone as Lieutenant
- 29:44Ben Guthrie with Jack Moyles. The Sergeant Pete Carger was written by E Jack
- 29:48Newman with music by Eddie Dunstedder. Featured in tonight's cast were high ever Back,
- 29:52Raymond Burr, Joe Deval, Howard mcneer, Peter Leeds, Virginia Greg
- 29:56and Gene Bates. The lineup was transcribed Hollywood by Hi made Do Vayer.
- 30:15Many people may not have enough money to contribute to our national campaigns, but
- 30:18the menu today, the immired to the battle lines of Korea is pitifully thin.
- 30:23American men may be suffering, perhaps dying, because of a lack of
- 30:29that life giving plasma. Make your blood contribution, no, give to America's
- 30:34blood line a lifeline to Korea. Cune in history here the Democratic Convention on
- 30:41the CBS Radio network, Welcome back. That one line about what does a
- 30:51kidnapper look like? Seems to be one of those lines that was used,
- 30:57I think, both repeatedly on Dragon It and the lineup. I haven't heard
- 31:03it in any modern shows. I guess that has officially been retired. And
- 31:08here in this episode we just see an example the family not handling the case
- 31:15well at all, with even a physical breakdown, And I think that's believable
- 31:21under the stress of kidnapping. All right, well, listener, comments and
- 31:25feedback. We have just one simple one from Rebecca who comments regarding the lineup.
- 31:30My favorite line is because they often lie that one is interesting, particularly
- 31:37when they will go to such efforts to question suspects when they don't need to,
- 31:44when all they're supposed to be doing is getting a natural tone of voice.
- 31:49So that part's always a little odd. But still enjoying the lineup,
- 31:56and I guess that I'll do it for this week. Oh Sunday, we
- 32:00have our video theater episode coming up, and it is a television episode Sherlock
- 32:09Holmes a story. It's not one of the Ronald Howard ones. It's a
- 32:14nineteen forty nine one presented by Lucky Strike. So it's got a tobacco ad
- 32:19in it, but other than that it's okay. It's an adaptation of The
- 32:23Speckled Band and it stars Alan Napier, perhaps best known for playing Alfred Pennyworth
- 32:31in the nineteen sixties Batman Show. But as I said, it'd be interesting,
- 32:37so look forward to that tomorrow. We'll see you back here on Monday
- 32:42with Johnny Dollar and then on Saturday. Be sure and tune in to the
- 32:50lineup. In the meanwhile, send your comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives
