- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:08We hope that this podcast will help you to know Christ, grow in
- 0:11his word, and show his love to others.
- 0:14Let's dive right in. Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:16Hope that you're having a great day today.
- 0:18We are back in James chapter 1 and verses 12 through 16 today
- 0:23versus 12 through 16 today. And we're going to learn a very
- 0:28important truth together. And that truth is what do we do
- 0:33with temptation? What do we do with temptation?
- 0:36And as we go through these verses together, I believe that
- 0:39it'll be a challenge and an encouragement to you.
- 0:41It's going to make us think about Jesus.
- 0:44It's going to make us think about our own lives and the ways
- 0:48in which we fail the Lord and the ways in which we don't have
- 0:51to fail. That we can have freedom and
- 0:54life and liberty even from temptation, or I should say,
- 0:58even from sin while we are here on this earth.
- 1:03And I hope that this will be an encouragement to you.
- 1:07The letter from James. James is writing.
- 1:09He's basically the the lead pastor or one of the lead
- 1:13pastors in the church at Jerusalem.
- 1:15He's writing it to people that used to be a part of his
- 1:17congregation that are now spread all across the Roman Empire as a
- 1:21result of persecution. And he's writing to encourage
- 1:24them in some practical ways of things that they need to be
- 1:27doing. They have also kind of been
- 1:30infiltrated in their various congregations by some rich
- 1:33individuals that they really want to be in charge.
- 1:39They want to be the ones that are teaching and commanding
- 1:43others. They're even, you know,
- 1:45determining seat seating arrangements at the church.
- 1:49And so James also writes about that.
- 1:51But we don't have to worry about that until a little bit later in
- 1:54the book. Today we're looking at
- 1:56temptation and how to have victory over it.
- 1:59Going to read through the verses and then we'll look at what God
- 2:01has for us today. James one and verse 12.
- 2:04Blessed is the one who endures trials, because when he has
- 2:09stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has
- 2:12promised to those who love him. No one undergoing a trial should
- 2:17say I'm being tempted by God, since God is not tempted by evil
- 2:23and he himself doesn't tempt anyone.
- 2:26But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by
- 2:32his own evil desire. Then after desire has conceived,
- 2:37it gives birth to sin, and sin when it's fully grown, it gives
- 2:43birth to death. Don't be deceived, my dear
- 2:48brothers and sisters. All right, so we've got kind of
- 2:52the first thing that we read in this passage is that there is a
- 2:56blessing for the people that are undergoing hard times and trials
- 3:00and temptations in their life. Now there's 2 words that are
- 3:05happening several times in these verses and it's the word trials
- 3:11and it's the word temptation. And both of these are very, very
- 3:16similar. So it's not even necessarily
- 3:19like 2 entirely different things.
- 3:21I'll, I'll put it this way for us, every trial that we go
- 3:27through brings with it a temptation to sin.
- 3:32But just because you're going through a trial does not mean
- 3:37that you have to give into temptation.
- 3:40Jesus went through trials in his life.
- 3:43He went through the Garden of Gethsemane.
- 3:46He went through the temptation the the trial of Satan
- 3:50presenting to him the kingdoms of the world and a a path to
- 3:56ruling that did not involve the cross and Jesus's sacrificial
- 4:02death. He went through those trials.
- 4:05But even as we would read in verse #13 God is not tempted by
- 4:10evil. There is nothing in God that is
- 4:13drawn to rejecting the will of God.
- 4:20We'll we'll, we'll see when we get to verse 13 if we'll deal
- 4:22with that more. But I wanted to start off with
- 4:24that. You're going to hear the word
- 4:25trial. You're going to hear the word
- 4:26temptation. Temptation is do this wrong
- 4:30thing. A trial is a difficult
- 4:33circumstance in or around you. When we think of it, we think of
- 4:38like a, a financial difficulty that, you know, we're, we're
- 4:41short on rent. We, we don't know about the, you
- 4:45know, utility bills or taxes. We're like, OK, man, I'm a, I'm
- 4:49a little bit short on what I need here.
- 4:51This is a trial that I'm going through or a loved one that is
- 4:54going through a health difficulty at the time that I'm
- 4:57recording this. Praying for a friend right now
- 5:00who has a loved one that's likely to pass.
- 5:02I'm praying for her because that is a trial.
- 5:05It is a time of, of grief and of sadness within our trials.
- 5:10There is then the opportunity for temptation to take place
- 5:15that within a financial trial, there can be a temptation to
- 5:19say, OK, I'm going to step outside of the will of God and
- 5:22I'm going to steal to make some money.
- 5:24Or, you know, I'm going to sell things that I shouldn't sell in
- 5:28order to try and get some money. There's a temptation within the
- 5:32difficult circumstance, a trial can be that someone, a neighbor
- 5:36or a family member is really deriding and attacking you,
- 5:40maybe slandering you to others. And the temptation within that
- 5:44trial is I'm going to have bitterness take hold of my life
- 5:48against this other person. You can have a temptation to
- 5:51kind of fight fire with fire and slander back instead of you
- 5:57know, doing what Jesus commanded us to and and turn the other
- 6:00cheek that we would not return evil for evil, but we would give
- 6:03blessing when others bring cursing.
- 6:06We pray for those that despitefully use us even as we
- 6:10would read in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5 S trials are
- 6:15hard times. Temptations are you should sin
- 6:19as a result of the trial that you're going through.
- 6:21So kind of with that framework, let's jump first into verse 12.
- 6:25Blessed is the one who endures trials who when they go through
- 6:31the hard times, they do not succumb to sin.
- 6:35They are job that are that that loses his possessions, loses
- 6:40family, loses even his own health and yet says the Lord
- 6:44gives the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of Yahweh.
- 6:48We ought to have that heart that we are going to go through
- 6:51trials and we are not going to succumb to sin.
- 6:54We're not going to turn our back on God.
- 6:56We are not going to turn to sin as opposed to turning to our
- 7:00Savior. And so when we go through
- 7:02trials, we endure it. We don't allow it to turn us
- 7:05away from the Lord. We will receive it says when we
- 7:09have stood the test, we will receive the crown of life that
- 7:13God has promised to those who love him.
- 7:16We will receive the crown of life.
- 7:19We talked about this. I actually don't know if this
- 7:21episode in the order of everything.
- 7:24I think you can go to our Tabernacle tidbits in second
- 7:28Timothy. I believe the episode has come
- 7:31out. It's like chapter 4 and around
- 7:34verse like 4 through 7 in Second Timothy 4, Paul says that he is
- 7:40going to receive a crown as a result of the the life and
- 7:46ministry that he has lived. And he says and not he says I'm
- 7:50not going to be the only one that receives this crown of
- 7:52righteousness. But also everyone that looks
- 7:56forward to Jesus is appearing and Jesus is coming.
- 7:59Those that have put their faith in Jesus will receive the crown
- 8:02of righteousness. This is a like Olympic Games
- 8:06Laurel wreath crown. This is not a like golden crown.
- 8:12This is for the race that you've run.
- 8:15You are receiving a crown not based on our righteousness, not
- 8:19based on our greatness, but based on Jesus.
- 8:22And so when we have turned to the Lord in our trials, God says
- 8:27you will receive a reward at the end of your life and says that
- 8:31God has promised to those who love him.
- 8:34If you want to get through the trials in your life, it's not
- 8:38just have a happy enough attitude, it's not just saying
- 8:43no to bad things. The way to endure trials is to
- 8:48love God. Beginning of the verse, Blessed
- 8:52is the one who endures trials because when he has stood the
- 8:54test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised
- 8:58to. It doesn't say those that have
- 8:59endured the trial, It doesn't say those that have stood the
- 9:01test. It says the crown of life that
- 9:03God has promised to those who love him.
- 9:07In the Garden of Eden, if Adam and Eve had loved God, there was
- 9:13a trial there that Satan had given them an opportunity to be
- 9:18like God. They had been told by the Lord,
- 9:22don't eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
- 9:25And instead of loving God, they chose their own wisdom and their
- 9:29own way. For you and I, when we go
- 9:32through trials, our options are not just give in or don't give
- 9:39in. It's follow our own wisdom and
- 9:42our own way of dealing with the trial.
- 9:45Or we can choose to love God in the trial because we know God
- 9:48loves us within the trials. God's love never changes.
- 9:53He will never take away His love for us.
- 9:56We can read that in Romans 838 and 39.
- 9:59What can separate us from the love of God?
- 10:00Can persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword,
- 10:04as it is written for your sake? We are killed all the day long.
- 10:07Know in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him
- 10:11who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither
- 10:13death nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things
- 10:16present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other
- 10:19creature will be able to separate us from the love of God
- 10:22that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
- 10:26So as a result of this, you want to win over temptation.
- 10:29Love God because when you love him, you will obey his commands.
- 10:34That's what we read in John 14 through 17.
- 10:36Jesus says it over and over and over again.
- 10:38If you love me, keep my commandments.
- 10:41And what is his commandment? Love God and love people.
- 10:46That's, that's, that's our goal. That's our direction.
- 10:49That's where we're headed. OK, now James brings it down to
- 10:53how this process looks. What does it look like to love
- 10:57God and to say no to temptation to endure, to walk through a
- 11:02trial verse #13 no one undergoing a trial should say I
- 11:08am being tempted by God. I'll, I'll say one of the ways
- 11:13that I have heard this most often in today's culture is,
- 11:18well, this is just the way God made me.
- 11:21And so if God made me this way, then I guess I have no choice.
- 11:26Or so I've heard that most often in relation to sexual
- 11:33orientation and action that people say, because I have these
- 11:38desires that I want to act on, therefore it means God created
- 11:43me with these desires and with this, with his mindset.
- 11:50And so I'm just going to give in because God gave me this.
- 11:53And so I guess I have to use it. That is a errant look at what is
- 11:59known as the total depravity of man, that God made you, but you
- 12:03are not your impulses. You are not your desires.
- 12:08You are so much more than that all of us Romans 323 have sinned
- 12:14and fall short of the glory of God.
- 12:16Or as we would read in Psalm 51, where David the the sweet
- 12:20psalmist of Israel, the anointed one by God the the ancestor of
- 12:25Jesus Christ himself said in sin, did my mother conceive me?
- 12:31He says from the very moment of my existence I have had a
- 12:35separation from God, or as we would read in Romans 5, that in
- 12:41Adam all died. All of humanity was separated
- 12:45from God both by their nature and by their choice.
- 12:49And so as a result of that, not every impulse that you have is
- 12:55good. Just because you think something
- 12:57doesn't mean that you should say it.
- 12:58Just because you feel like you should hit someone does not mean
- 13:01that you should hit someone. Just because you feel attracted
- 13:06to a person of the same gender or you feel attracted to someone
- 13:11that is not your spouse, does not mean that God put that
- 13:15desire to sin in you. Instead, that is the part of you
- 13:21that right now is tainted by sin and that God wants to call you
- 13:26out from that into obedience to him that you would choose to
- 13:30love and obey and follow His word, that you would not love
- 13:34and follow and obey your natural sinful desires because you're so
- 13:40much more than that. So verse 13, no one undergoing a
- 13:43trial should say I'm being tempted by God.
- 13:46And he says, you can't say that because God is not tempted by
- 13:50evil, that there was no part of Jesus that was drawn to listen
- 13:54to Satan. Satan presented the temptation,
- 13:58but it had no draw. It had no pull on Jesus when
- 14:02Peter said no, no, no, you're not going to die and and and
- 14:07raise from the dead three days later.
- 14:09We're not going to let you die. And Jesus says, get behind me,
- 14:12Satan. There is no part of Jesus that
- 14:14went, Oh yeah, maybe I really should consider this.
- 14:18He was perfect and holy in every way.
- 14:21And God himself the the Father is never tempted to do what is
- 14:26wrong. We can always know that our God
- 14:28is going to do what is righteous and sometimes that means that
- 14:34he's going to bring justice. He might not always bring
- 14:36justice on your timetable, but know that he is bringing, if you
- 14:40will, He is bringing the hammer down.
- 14:42It's just a question of when and in his patients and his
- 14:46long-suffering, knowing he's an eternal God.
- 14:49And it might not happen within this lifetime, but as soon as
- 14:52this lifetime is over, every single thing that needs justice
- 14:56will receive it in full eternally.
- 15:00So God is not tempted by evil. Last part of verse 13.
- 15:03And he himself doesn't tempt anyone.
- 15:07God never does anything in your life so that you would turn to
- 15:11sin. Now Satan does Satan in the
- 15:15Satan brings trials so that you would be tempted.
- 15:19But when God allows you to be tested, it is not so that you
- 15:23would be enticed to sin. God is bringing you trials so
- 15:27that you would choose to love him and that you would not
- 15:31listen to Satan. We see this even in Job's life
- 15:36where God is proving Job to be a mature, a complete, a righteous
- 15:43and just man and He wants to bring blessing into Job's life
- 15:48even as a result of the heartbreak and trials that he
- 15:51goes through. You can look at the end of the
- 15:52story of Job where all of the people that used to be
- 15:56acquaintances with Job, they loved him and they gave things
- 15:59to him. And so he got twice as much
- 16:02stuff as he did at the end of the story than that he had at
- 16:05the beginning. And he was even more fabulously
- 16:07rich. I will say that will not happen
- 16:11to every single one of us. But but that is the story of
- 16:14Job, that God wanted to bring blessing and God wanted Job to
- 16:17know him and to love him and to trust Him.
- 16:21Even in trials where Satan was trying to get Job to curse God
- 16:25and die, but God does. When God brings trials into our
- 16:29life, it is so that you would know Him and love Him more, that
- 16:33you would experience His presence, that you would
- 16:36recognize His greatness, and so that you would obey and follow
- 16:42Him. That's why trials are in your
- 16:44life, so you can love God more. So next time you've got that
- 16:48relationship difficulty, that financial difficulty, that
- 16:50health difficulty, realize God is bringing it so that you would
- 16:54love Him more, that you would know knowingly, experientially
- 17:00know God more as Emmanuel, God with us, the one who is a very
- 17:05present help in times of trouble.
- 17:08Verse #14 So if God doesn't tempt us, if God's not trying to
- 17:12invite us to sin, it says each person is tempted, is drawn to
- 17:17sin when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desire.
- 17:24Your temptations, the ways in which you want to do wrong,
- 17:27comes from the inside of you. It is not coming from God.
- 17:31It is coming from the, if you will, the evil part of you, that
- 17:35old nature, that old man that is mentioned in Romans chapter 6
- 17:40that Paul says is dead, but it's still trying to like claw out of
- 17:45the grave to still control your actions.
- 17:48Even though it has been defeated by the Holy Spirit inside of
- 17:51you. It's still trying to call the
- 17:52shots. Don't let it don't.
- 17:56So when you're tempted, when you're drawn to sin, realize
- 17:59this is a call from a defeated enemy who wants to control my
- 18:03actions and my words and my thoughts right now.
- 18:06And I will not listen to this dead and defeated enemy.
- 18:11I'm going to listen to the victorious Jesus.
- 18:13I'm going to listen to the Word of God.
- 18:15I'm going to listen to the Holy Spirit who wants to conquer this
- 18:18evil desire within my life. Verse #15 So when we're drawn to
- 18:23sin, it's from the evil desire within us that wants to control
- 18:27us. And it says after desire has
- 18:30conceived, it gives birth to sin, that when you listen to
- 18:34that desire, then sin shows up in your life.
- 18:38And when sin is fully grown, verse 15, it gives birth to
- 18:43death, to destruction and devastation within your life.
- 18:49Don't assume that just because you are a Christian, you have
- 18:52believed in Jesus for salvation, that you can sin and it will do
- 18:56nothing to your relationships, to to your health, to your job,
- 19:02to your church. Sin will kill you if you allow
- 19:07it to go on. And I'm not just talking like
- 19:09physical death, certainly, but you know, you can sin in a way
- 19:13that you can rob a bank. You can, you know, the armed
- 19:15robbery or whatever. And you might actually literally
- 19:19die directly as a result of your actions in in those sins.
- 19:24But it can also bring death to your marriage.
- 19:29If you step out, you commit adultery.
- 19:30You, you know, are are looking at things that you shouldn't.
- 19:34It can destroy you. It can in your friendships that
- 19:39you lie or you take advantage of, or you are cruel or you
- 19:43gossip about your friends. It can kill your friendships.
- 19:46It can kill churches and many churches have been killed
- 19:49through sins that people have refused to repent of.
- 19:53And instead of saying this is an evil enemy that I want nothing
- 19:56to do with and it is not going to call the shots of my life
- 20:00those that have yielded to sin, it brings death and destruction
- 20:05and devastation to every. Area And so in verse #16 James
- 20:11ends this section by saying, don't be deceived, my dear
- 20:15brothers and sisters. It says do not, do not air.
- 20:19Just as Adam and Eve in the garden.
- 20:25They were deceived. They were tricked by the
- 20:27temptation that they experienced from Satan and they listened to
- 20:30him. They did not love God and follow
- 20:32His commands to love God and to love people.
- 20:35Instead, they were tricked and they sinned and it brought forth
- 20:40death. And so he says, don't be LED
- 20:42astray. Sin is a liar.
- 20:45It is not looking out for you, you responding in anger, you
- 20:50responding in in wrath, you being envious of what other
- 20:56people have, covetous of other people's possessions or
- 21:00relationships, lust in your life, all of those things.
- 21:05They are liars. Do not trust them, don't listen
- 21:09to them, they will destroy you. Instead, choose instead of your
- 21:14own way and your own wisdom and how you will act and react and
- 21:18talk and think. Instead, love God and pursue His
- 21:22character and His nature. That in every trial you're
- 21:25responding with Lovejoy, peace, patience, long-suffering,
- 21:29gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and self-control.
- 21:34And that as you pursue those and that's the life that you're
- 21:38living. No, there's a reward waiting for
- 21:41you from your Father. Not as a result of how perfectly
- 21:45you went through things, but that you chose.
- 21:48I'm going to love God and I'm going to pursue Him, even though
- 21:51I'm going to do it imperfectly, even though at times I'm going
- 21:54to slip and I'm going to fall. I know that there is forgiveness
- 21:57and redemption with my Savior. And so as a result, I know that
- 22:02there is a crown of life that God has promised to those that
- 22:05love him. So endure the trials.
- 22:07Go through them. Don't allow them to tempt you to
- 22:10say, I'm going to pursue now. I'm going to respond to these
- 22:14trials in sin. Instead, choose I'm going to
- 22:16respond in faith and endurance that that maturity, that
- 22:20patience that we read about at the beginning of chapter 1.
- 22:25Let the love of God help you win the battle against trials.
- 22:30Thanks for tuning in today. Hope that this was an
- 22:32encouragement to you. I know it was.
- 22:35I know it was to me. And looking forward to next
- 22:37time. I think we're in verses 17 and
- 22:4018 next episode.
