- 0:05Speaker 1: twenty first, twenty twenty four, so by the time you
- 0:08Speaker 1: hear this, some things may have changed here or there,
- 0:10Speaker 1: but we hope you enjoy the show. Welcome to the
- 0:46Speaker 1: Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly
- 0:49Speaker 1: sports podcast show in the world, eleven years strong. We
- 0:52Speaker 1: got a great discussion coming to you this week. We've
- 0:56Speaker 1: got some guess a vacation stories we're gonna first get into,
- 1:00Speaker 1: and then it was a story that came out this
- 1:02Speaker 1: past week that Jim Harball, the head coach of the
- 1:06Speaker 1: Los Angeles Chargers, back in January, offered Colin Kaepernick a
- 1:10Speaker 1: coaching position with the team. We're gonna get into our
- 1:13Speaker 1: thoughts on that particular story, and then from there we're
- 1:15Speaker 1: gonna get into some Eagles talk. Philadelphia seventy six ers.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I be bringing on some new talent. I can't wait.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Even though I've heard his name countless times, even though
- 1:24Speaker 1: I've heard Gershon's name countless times, I'm gonna batch his
- 1:26Speaker 1: last name for sure. And how is this Phillies team doing, Folks?
- 1:30Speaker 1: How they doing still up and down, but we're gonna
- 1:33Speaker 1: get into that. We got a great guest this week,
- 1:35Speaker 1: Eric Morritelli from that ballsat here dot Com. He's going
- 1:37Speaker 1: to be joining us toward the end of the show.
- 1:39Speaker 1: But right now, I've got my buddy Eric Leonard here.
- 1:42Speaker 1: I'm Jeff Warren, Eric Harrett. How do you doing?
- 1:44Speaker 2: Man?
- 1:45Speaker 3: Good man? Eric with ka here?
- 1:47Speaker 1: Yes, the right way to spell it, right, it's the
- 1:50Speaker 1: correct way to spell it.
- 1:52Speaker 3: No offense to our guests, but you know that's kind
- 1:54Speaker 3: of the data way to spell it, you know, not
- 1:58Speaker 3: like me. I just learned that one recently.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I love that.
- 2:02Speaker 3: I spent a week with the kids, so I have
- 2:04Speaker 3: all this slang down now. Oh yeah, I'm good. I
- 2:07Speaker 3: actually went on a vacation. You're up in Buffalo, yeah yeah, yeah,
- 2:11Speaker 3: which we can go into it later. But like I
- 2:14Speaker 3: not a city I've ever thought about ever until like
- 2:16Speaker 3: last year, and now I love it. I'm not gonna lie.
- 2:19Speaker 3: It's a great city and I, I don't know, just
- 2:23Speaker 3: super impressed by the people, the food, the whole vibe
- 2:27Speaker 3: of the town. It is really cool. And you know,
- 2:29Speaker 3: they just happen to have now your falls there, which
- 2:32Speaker 3: is just like, I don't care how many times you
- 2:34Speaker 3: see it. Every time you do for the next time,
- 2:36Speaker 3: You're just like, my life is meaningless. I'm gonna speck
- 2:40Speaker 3: like on the on the globe, you know what I mean.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Like it's just one of those things like, holy hell,
- 2:45Speaker 3: there's things bigger than me, and this is one of
- 2:47Speaker 3: them right in front of me.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Well, what you just said, you got, you got. My
- 2:49Speaker 1: life is meaningless. I love the text message that you
- 2:52Speaker 1: sent our bodies where you're like, it's the falls and
- 2:54Speaker 1: you should.
- 2:55Speaker 2: I jump.
- 2:59Speaker 4: You.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I need you for the podcast.
- 3:03Speaker 3: You do get that weird feeling and you're like, what
- 3:05Speaker 3: if I jumped, I make it? Could I do it?
- 3:09Speaker 3: There's all those stories that those weirdos who went over
- 3:11Speaker 3: the falls and a barrel and yeah, or had their
- 3:14Speaker 3: cat and a friggin thing, and like they survived. It's
- 3:17Speaker 3: just you did get that weird sense of like it's
- 3:19Speaker 3: like when you see a cop you know, and be gune,
- 3:21Speaker 3: You're like, tis today the day I'm gonna try it.
- 3:25Speaker 3: It was weird feelings, those thoughts you have that you
- 3:28Speaker 3: never follow through with, but yeah, one of them is
- 3:30Speaker 3: like I could do this. I saw the you know,
- 3:33Speaker 3: uh what the Fugitive. I saw the fugitive. He's made it.
- 3:36Speaker 3: You know I can make it.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Did you have any Buffalo wings?
- 3:43Speaker 3: I absolutely did. All right, they are better up there.
- 3:47Speaker 3: They're crispier, that's the key. The sauce is phenomenal. I
- 3:51Speaker 3: had the beef on weck, which is very popular to
- 3:54Speaker 3: Buffalo Basically, you know, a pork beef sandwich, uh with
- 4:01Speaker 3: with horse radish, not unlike a lot of Phillies sandwiches
- 4:05Speaker 3: in Philly, right, I gotta say it compares. It's it
- 4:09Speaker 3: is so freaking good. It's it's the bun. It's the
- 4:12Speaker 3: bun there.
- 4:12Speaker 1: You go every city, just about every city, they have
- 4:16Speaker 1: their own specific foods that are fantastic. And you know what,
- 4:19Speaker 1: it's okay. It's okay that it's just as good or
- 4:22Speaker 1: maybe even better than Philadelphia based food. So seriously, it's
- 4:25Speaker 1: okay to go to a place like if you go
- 4:28Speaker 1: out to Chicago and you have deep dish pizza, it's
- 4:31Speaker 1: okay that it's fantastic pizza. It's deep dish pizza. You're
- 4:35Speaker 1: getting it in a place where it's it's known for that.
- 4:38Speaker 1: They're just different cities around the United States where certain
- 4:41Speaker 1: foods are no or you know, that food because of
- 4:44Speaker 1: that city, and it's the best.
- 4:47Speaker 3: If you swap the roast pork thing with the long
- 4:50Speaker 3: hots in Philly, with the beef on weck, you swapped
- 4:52Speaker 3: them out Buffalo to Philly, they'll be just as big.
- 4:55Speaker 3: In Buffalo. The beef on we would be huge in Philly.
- 4:57Speaker 3: There'd be beef on weck shops everywhere, and there'd be
- 5:00Speaker 3: John you know John's ros pork shops all over Buffalo.
- 5:03Speaker 3: That's how good the sandwich is. It absolutely compares. And
- 5:06Speaker 3: I it's it does remind me of Philadelphia, but on
- 5:10Speaker 3: a smaller scale. It almost it almost takes like South
- 5:12Speaker 3: Philly and just blows it up into an entire like
- 5:16Speaker 3: city with surrounding suburbs. Yeah, it's kind of the feel
- 5:19Speaker 3: of that city.
- 5:19Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to going there. I told you before
- 5:21Speaker 1: we hit the record button, I wanted to go up
- 5:23Speaker 1: there with my family this summer. We just didn't have
- 5:25Speaker 1: the chance to have so much stuff going on constantly.
- 5:27Speaker 1: We all do you know folks that do have families
- 5:30Speaker 1: out there, And even if you don't, you know, we
- 5:31Speaker 1: all got a lot of stuff going on. Hopefully we're
- 5:34Speaker 1: gonna get up there next summer. But I guess it's
- 5:37Speaker 1: a This is all a great segue into our first
- 5:39Speaker 1: story this week, and first segment that we wanted to
- 5:41Speaker 1: get into, and it really dealt with your trip Eric
- 5:44Speaker 1: up to Buffalo and just the feels and the vibes
- 5:48Speaker 1: with regard to professional sports up there, and really how
- 5:51Speaker 1: it's different than Philadelphia. Two sports teams, two professional sports
- 5:56Speaker 1: teams up in Buffalo, with the Buffalo Bills, the Buffalo Sabers.
- 6:00Speaker 1: We've got five down here in Philadelphia, I mean four
- 6:03Speaker 1: major ones. You know, you've got the Philadelphia Union of
- 6:05Speaker 1: completely crapped a bed this season, but still there's five
- 6:11Speaker 1: here in Philly. But you were really talking about with
- 6:14Speaker 1: me like that it's a different vibe up there. I
- 6:16Speaker 1: don't know if you want to get into it.
- 6:18Speaker 3: And I only brought it up for the show because
- 6:20Speaker 3: I called you for the show, and I'm like, I
- 6:22Speaker 3: got an idea for a topic, because I thought about
- 6:25Speaker 3: this a lot, because I we took our dog with us,
- 6:27Speaker 3: so I and we stayed in Airbnb, like in one
- 6:31Speaker 3: of the neighborhoods of Buffalo. We stayed in like we
- 6:33Speaker 3: didn't stay in a nice hotel. We stayed in Buffalo,
- 6:37Speaker 3: and every house is kind of the same. They're all
- 6:39Speaker 3: upstate New York with the weird front deck thing. They're
- 6:42Speaker 3: all built.
- 6:42Speaker 2: They all built.
- 6:43Speaker 3: Nineteen seventy five, and walking around nice neighborhoods with like
- 6:50Speaker 3: like great yards, nice car like a BMW and every
- 6:54Speaker 3: house has two bills flags and like cardboard cutouts of
- 6:57Speaker 3: Josh Allen in the front yard. And I'm just like,
- 7:01Speaker 3: man that we all know about the Bill's mafia, right,
- 7:04Speaker 3: Eagles fans are wild, their fans are wild. But I
- 7:07Speaker 3: was just like, this just feels different up here, and
- 7:10Speaker 3: not in like Philadelphia fans huge, right, Like there's tons
- 7:14Speaker 3: of Eagles fans even out here in Central PA. It's everywhere, right,
- 7:17Speaker 3: passionate fans, but there's just a smaller because there's only
- 7:22Speaker 3: two major teams up there. I'm walking on these neighborhoods
- 7:25Speaker 3: and like I would walk for hours and every neighborhood
- 7:28Speaker 3: like this, and I'm just like this almost feels like
- 7:30Speaker 3: a small Texas town high school football thing.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Wow.
- 7:34Speaker 3: But in a city, like in a major city with
- 7:37Speaker 3: a major NFL team, that is a lot of success.
- 7:39Speaker 3: I know they lost the four Super Bowl whatever, they're
- 7:41Speaker 3: a great team, they've had a lot of like they've
- 7:43Speaker 3: won a lot recently, and I just I was walking
- 7:47Speaker 3: around thinking is this better? Would this be better fandom?
- 7:51Speaker 3: Even without the losses in the Super Bowl in the nineties.
- 7:54Speaker 3: Is it better fandom to have two major league teams
- 7:58Speaker 3: in a city like this where that's all you're focused on?
- 8:01Speaker 3: These two teams? Yeah, And it's almost, like I said,
- 8:04Speaker 3: like a high school almost college vibe as opposed to
- 8:08Speaker 3: the metropolitan area Philip with four major teams. Sports talk
- 8:11Speaker 3: is constant about all four major teams, And it would
- 8:16Speaker 3: it be better? As a fan? It'd be like, I like,
- 8:18Speaker 3: these two teams, this is all I'm going to focus on.
- 8:21Speaker 3: There's too much going on in the sports world. And
- 8:24Speaker 3: I I I thought about it a lot walking around
- 8:28Speaker 3: because I you know, I do the show and I'm
- 8:29Speaker 3: a huge Philly fan, and I was just like, this
- 8:31Speaker 3: almost feels like it'd be a lot easier. Like they're like,
- 8:38Speaker 3: we listen to Philly sports talk back in the day
- 8:40Speaker 3: and it's just constant yelling and screaming. Yes, Like like
- 8:44Speaker 3: it's like if I just have two teams and one's
- 8:46Speaker 3: not very good, but the Bills are good, I can
- 8:48Speaker 3: just focus on that right, and or does it make
- 8:51Speaker 3: it worse because like if they lose, holy shit, I
- 8:54Speaker 3: gotta wait till next year because they're both fault fall
- 8:57Speaker 3: and like winter teams, yeah, you got nothing in the summertime,
- 8:59Speaker 3: nobody baseball teams. I was just thinking, like, I don't
- 9:02Speaker 3: know what fandom would be better, because I do respect
- 9:05Speaker 3: both fan bases so much. I happen to be in one.
- 9:08Speaker 3: But I'm a huge fan of the Bills Mafia and
- 9:11Speaker 3: just that whole scene, the Sabers scene up there is gigantic.
- 9:14Speaker 3: I saw a lot of Sabers jerseys, and I don't know.
- 9:17Speaker 3: I just had a thought like which one would be worse,
- 9:19Speaker 3: which one would be best, which the better aspects of
- 9:22Speaker 3: the either one. That's what I think about when I
- 9:24Speaker 3: walked the dog, because I have I'm much Yahn's.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it sounds like to me, you're talking
- 9:29Speaker 1: about different degrees of passion, different degrees of how close
- 9:34Speaker 1: to your heart. Not to be too coranty, but that
- 9:37Speaker 1: you keep these teams in a way. And also, I
- 9:41Speaker 1: mean when you have four or five sports teams in
- 9:44Speaker 1: one city, like you said, there is so much going on.
- 9:47Speaker 1: There's so much going on with what you're able to
- 9:50Speaker 1: take in the intake of everything going on with those teams.
- 9:53Speaker 1: We try to do it here on this podcast, and
- 9:56Speaker 1: it's impossible every week. We can't cover every freaking story
- 9:59Speaker 1: all the time time, you know. And that's why there
- 10:02Speaker 1: are other podcasts out there that are niche, but even
- 10:04Speaker 1: more niche podcasts than us just focusing on the Flyers,
- 10:06Speaker 1: just focusing on the Sixers, Phillies, Eagles, and Union as well.
- 10:10Speaker 1: So it's the different degrees of passion I think that
- 10:13Speaker 1: you're talking about. It's not that we can compare them
- 10:16Speaker 1: and say they're the same, or that this one's necessarily
- 10:19Speaker 1: quote better than the other. It's just a different degree
- 10:22Speaker 1: of passion. And I think from what you're saying, Eric,
- 10:26Speaker 1: it would probably be it might be an easier life
- 10:30Speaker 1: to have only two sports teams, you know, when you're
- 10:32Speaker 1: looking at sports in terms of entertaining yourself and being
- 10:36Speaker 1: passionate about sports, having two instead of five, I don't know.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I might take the two.
- 10:43Speaker 3: And that was my thought, like, Okay, this is man
- 10:45Speaker 3: so much easier. Imagine this is a Buffalo sports table. Yeah,
- 10:49Speaker 3: we would have our topics. It's easy. It would be
- 10:52Speaker 3: much talk about in the summertime.
- 10:54Speaker 1: I was gonna say, I was gonna say, during training camp,
- 10:57Speaker 1: for a Bill's training camp, we would be talking about
- 11:00Speaker 1: a third string left tackle, like you wouldn't believe the
- 11:03Speaker 1: analysis of that, gentleman. We would be in the weeds.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Beyond in the weeds. We'd be making stories we do
- 11:10Speaker 3: hear sometimes, but like we would do a lot of movies,
- 11:13Speaker 3: movies and music podcast right. Absolutely, man to just focus
- 11:17Speaker 3: on that, I think it almost creates a level of
- 11:20Speaker 3: fandom that goes beyond like psychosis, yea entity, because like
- 11:27Speaker 3: I saw guys wearing the Bill Zumba pants, Oh my god, yes,
- 11:35Speaker 3: like that in August correct, and it's like that's cool.
- 11:39Speaker 1: I love that.
- 11:40Speaker 3: I love the passion. But holy shit, there's nothing else
- 11:42Speaker 3: going on, you know, I don't know, I don't None
- 11:47Speaker 3: of them are better. I'm never gonna switch. If the
- 11:49Speaker 3: Bills all Needles weren't in it, awesome, I'm sharing my
- 11:52Speaker 3: ass off for them like that. That city, absolutely, there's
- 11:55Speaker 3: a few cities on the list that absolutely deserve championships. Baltimore,
- 12:00Speaker 3: I'm probably we're probably buy us East Coast kind of teams,
- 12:03Speaker 3: right yeah, like like post industrial kind of kind of
- 12:06Speaker 3: teams like Cleveland, Buffalo, Baltimore, but that city in particular,
- 12:12Speaker 3: if the Bills won, Oh my god, I would I
- 12:15Speaker 3: would love to go up there for that weekend because
- 12:17Speaker 3: that would just be when the Eagles one and we
- 12:19Speaker 3: were in state college. Yes, nuts up there would would
- 12:23Speaker 3: there would be dudes being put through flaming tables off
- 12:26Speaker 3: rooftops all over the city.
- 12:29Speaker 1: That's everywhere that somebody. People would be like, yes, put
- 12:33Speaker 1: me to death right now. I saw the Bills win
- 12:36Speaker 1: a Super Bowl. I'm good to die. I'm good to
- 12:38Speaker 1: die right now.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Let's do it like my parents live through the nineties,
- 12:42Speaker 3: so that that ship show. Yeah, like, yeah, we can
- 12:45Speaker 3: die now. Because I saw a championship and it's I
- 12:48Speaker 3: don't know, I I thought about it a lot just
- 12:50Speaker 3: because it was so it was so overwhelming. It just
- 12:53Speaker 3: seemed like nice houses with Josh Allen, cardboork.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Crazy.
- 13:00Speaker 1: I love that story. It's a great story. One we
- 13:02Speaker 1: haven't done here on the show. What are your thoughts
- 13:06Speaker 1: out there, Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com, specifically
- 13:09Speaker 1: about you know, you know, do you think it's easier
- 13:11Speaker 1: being in a Philadelphia sports fan or perhaps a fan
- 13:14Speaker 1: like a Buffalo fan, a Buffalo sports fan, We'd love
- 13:17Speaker 1: to hear from you, but moving along here with our agenda, Eric,
- 13:22Speaker 1: I was really really kind of intrigued by this story
- 13:27Speaker 1: from this past week. So I'm real, I'm reading I'm
- 13:30Speaker 1: reading one of the sports sites that I go to,
- 13:33Speaker 1: and I'm like, I can't stand Jim Harbaugh. Can't stand
- 13:36Speaker 1: Jim Harbaugh. Folks know that. But amazingly enough, story comes
- 13:41Speaker 1: out of report that he extended an offer to Colin
- 13:45Speaker 1: Kaepernick to join the Los Angeles Chargers coaching staff back
- 13:50Speaker 1: in January of this year. Colin Kaepernick declined he still
- 13:54Speaker 1: apparently wants to play in the NFL, per the reports,
- 13:57Speaker 1: that's his desire, that's what he wants to do, and
- 14:00Speaker 1: Jim Harbaugh said that the offer is still on the
- 14:03Speaker 1: table if Colin Kaepernick wants to come back to you
- 14:07Speaker 1: know that that quote that Jim Harbaugh type of bubble
- 14:12Speaker 1: is so to say he really wants him, And I
- 14:16Speaker 1: guess that really does speak And look, I'm not a
- 14:18Speaker 1: Jim Harbaugh fan, as I said, but I guess it
- 14:21Speaker 1: really does speak to the type of person Colin Kaepernick is.
- 14:24Speaker 1: If Jim Harbaugh said, you know what I had, I
- 14:27Speaker 1: had the opportunity to coach this kid for all those
- 14:31Speaker 1: years that he was in San Francisco, and I want
- 14:34Speaker 1: him because he has knowledge, he has value to bring
- 14:37Speaker 1: to an NFL team. But what I thought was interesting
- 14:40Speaker 1: about this story, Eric, was that Kaepernick said no, he
- 14:45Speaker 1: because he still wants to play in the NFL. Totally
- 14:48Speaker 1: get it. You know, maybe he just doesn't have any
- 14:49Speaker 1: interest in coaching. But my thoughts with this are, he
- 14:53Speaker 1: last played in twenty sixteen. He played twelve games that year,
- 14:58Speaker 1: wasn't the greatest. He'sn't necessarily had sixteen touchdowns four interceptions
- 15:04Speaker 1: again in those twelve games. But I'm thinking to myself,
- 15:08Speaker 1: you have done so much work within the realm of
- 15:13Speaker 1: racial justice, the issue that he has been at the
- 15:18Speaker 1: forefront of for all these years. It doesn't seem like
- 15:22Speaker 1: he's going to be playing football anytime soon. And I'm
- 15:24Speaker 1: not trying to, you know, I'm not trying to, you know,
- 15:27Speaker 1: throw any sort of shade or anything like that with
- 15:29Speaker 1: regard to his his endeavors in what he wants to do.
- 15:33Speaker 1: But I just don't think it's gonna happen. It's been
- 15:35Speaker 1: two since twenty sixteen, since he's been on the field.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Playing football. But if you have an NFL coach and
- 15:40Speaker 1: a guy like Jim Harbaugh is going to offer you
- 15:43Speaker 1: a coaching position, I kind of don't understand. And again,
- 15:46Speaker 1: he may just not want to coach, But why not
- 15:49Speaker 1: leave your mark in the NFL after doing what you
- 15:51Speaker 1: have done in such a proactive fashion highlighting an issue
- 15:56Speaker 1: that's important to you, And you could still do that
- 15:58Speaker 1: while making your mark in the NFL on a coaching
- 16:02Speaker 1: staff and continuing to bring your knowledge of football, your
- 16:07Speaker 1: knowledge of the world of racial justice that you've been
- 16:09Speaker 1: fighting for to continue to bring it to the NFL.
- 16:13Speaker 1: I'm kind of like, I'm like, huh, it's interesting that
- 16:15Speaker 1: he didn't take the position. I'm not going to criticize
- 16:18Speaker 1: him for it. I just thought it was interesting. How
- 16:20Speaker 1: if you want to leave your mark that much more,
- 16:22Speaker 1: this could have been the perfect opportunity to do it.
- 16:24Speaker 1: And you've got an owner. I don't know who the
- 16:26Speaker 1: owner of the Los Angeles Chargers are, but they were
- 16:29Speaker 1: okay with him coming to the team in this capacity obviously,
- 16:32Speaker 1: so thought it was an interesting story. That's where I'm
- 16:35Speaker 1: coming from with this. It's like, man, if I were him,
- 16:38Speaker 1: I'd be like all over this, let's get back in
- 16:39Speaker 1: the NFL. May not be on the field playing football,
- 16:42Speaker 1: but if I can continue to leave my mark with
- 16:46Speaker 1: regard to the game of football and with regard to
- 16:48Speaker 1: racial justice, why not do it. So that's where I'm
- 16:50Speaker 1: coming from.
- 16:51Speaker 3: Yeah, he's gonna be thirty seven in November. I mean
- 16:54Speaker 3: he's playing days of probably over. And I but a
- 16:57Speaker 3: couple thoughts right away. Number One, when you played at
- 17:01Speaker 3: that high of a level of being a starting quarterback
- 17:05Speaker 3: and going to the Super Bowl, I don't care what
- 17:06Speaker 3: year was, right, you still have that dog in you.
- 17:09Speaker 3: I don't care if you're fifty years old.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 17:12Speaker 3: I'm sure in his mind he can still throw thirty
- 17:14Speaker 3: eight touchdowns, eight interceptions for five thousand yards. Right, But
- 17:19Speaker 3: it's hard to get that out of your mind. Yeah,
- 17:21Speaker 3: And so I can understand why he's like, I don't
- 17:24Speaker 3: want to coach. I still want to play, right. But
- 17:27Speaker 3: now here's where I get a little little negative. Now,
- 17:31Speaker 3: if this was John Harbaugh with Baltimore, I would feel
- 17:35Speaker 3: a little better about this story overall. See, it almost
- 17:38Speaker 3: came off to me like Jim Harbaugh kind of self serving,
- 17:41Speaker 3: just a bit kind of an asshole, a little bit
- 17:44Speaker 3: a little bit in his khakis, his asshole khakis. I
- 17:48Speaker 3: think it came off as like kind of a pr ploy. Initially,
- 17:53Speaker 3: when I saw the story in the agenda, I was like, Oh,
- 17:56Speaker 3: Jim Harbaugh wants to do this. His teams kind of suck,
- 17:58Speaker 3: probably right, yeah, gonna be pretty bad. And it's like, well,
- 18:02Speaker 3: let me keep let me keep this, Like, sure it
- 18:05Speaker 3: might've come from the heart, it might have been from
- 18:07Speaker 3: a good place, but because of his reputation, it's like,
- 18:10Speaker 3: I don't know about this. So that's why I didn't
- 18:13Speaker 3: want to ask you, like, what was the position offered?
- 18:15Speaker 1: I don't know. I did not see what that was.
- 18:17Speaker 1: I was actually trying to look at that. I'm assuming
- 18:20Speaker 1: it would probably be some sort of offensive quality control
- 18:24Speaker 1: or even I don't even know if it would be
- 18:25Speaker 1: quarterbacks coach, but probably offensive quality control something like that.
- 18:29Speaker 3: I'm sure to be something far down the totem pole
- 18:32Speaker 3: on the list. But regardless, I agree with you in
- 18:37Speaker 3: the it would help him, you know, continue on his
- 18:41Speaker 3: fight with racial injustice. But how much has he been
- 18:45Speaker 3: out there the past two or three years with that?
- 18:48Speaker 3: You know, I haven't really quite seen him, and I'm
- 18:52Speaker 3: I'm not saying he's not still for obviously, he gave
- 18:54Speaker 3: up his career for it.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I think he does have a foundation
- 18:57Speaker 1: that he does a lot of work with. I just
- 18:58Speaker 1: don't think he's getting much felicity, you know.
- 19:01Speaker 3: True, And this might be a good pr move for
- 19:04Speaker 3: him to like to bring in more attention to that
- 19:07Speaker 3: thing he's working for. But like I said, he might
- 19:11Speaker 3: be like, you know, if I could make a damn
- 19:13Speaker 3: roster spot, that's even better exposure. Like I'm still for
- 19:18Speaker 3: the racial injustice stuff obviously, but if I can maybe
- 19:21Speaker 3: make a third string I'm in the preseason here, maybe
- 19:24Speaker 3: that would be more of a spotlight on it. I
- 19:26Speaker 3: might get on ESPN as opposed to him on I'm
- 19:30Speaker 3: not on hard knocks. I'm kind of a third string coach,
- 19:34Speaker 3: which you no one cares about, right, But I think
- 19:37Speaker 3: it's interesting that the thorn in the story for me
- 19:40Speaker 3: always with Jim Harbaugh. And I don't know if any
- 19:46Speaker 3: of the coach had done it, like if like the
- 19:48Speaker 3: Texans coach had done it, just yeah, sure, like oh cool,
- 19:53Speaker 3: that kind of makes sense. But like for him to
- 19:54Speaker 3: do it, the team might suck. It's like we're this
- 19:58Speaker 3: where the fourth favorite team in la as it is, yeah,
- 20:02Speaker 3: out of all the sports teams there. And it's like,
- 20:05Speaker 3: I don't know, but I kind of appreciate the gesture
- 20:09Speaker 3: if it comes from a good place.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree, totally agree. It's a really interesting story.
- 20:14Speaker 1: And I do wonder if at some point he does
- 20:16Speaker 1: get to the point where he says, Okay, I know
- 20:18Speaker 1: football is not gonna happen for me. You know, maybe
- 20:21Speaker 1: let's continue to leave my mark on the game, leave
- 20:24Speaker 1: my mark with regard to racial justice advocacy. It'll be
- 20:27Speaker 1: interesting to follow for sure in the future. But before
- 20:31Speaker 1: we go to break here, Eric wanted to get into
- 20:34Speaker 1: some quick thoughts about the Philadelphia Eagles, as today was
- 20:37Speaker 1: the last day of training camp. Their final preseason game
- 20:41Speaker 1: is going to be here before we know it, and
- 20:43Speaker 1: Magad the season is going to start that first week
- 20:45Speaker 1: of September down in Brazil against the Green Bay Packers.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Here in terms of where this team is that there's
- 20:52Speaker 1: so many good vibes and good fields coming from a
- 20:55Speaker 1: team that looks on paper like they should be going
- 20:58Speaker 1: well into the playoffs this year. But I know a
- 21:02Speaker 1: lot of us in the podcast world specifically that talk
- 21:04Speaker 1: about this team. Sometimes I feel like we're trying to
- 21:08Speaker 1: really come up with concerns in a way, and there
- 21:10Speaker 1: are legitimate concerns with regard to this team offensively and defensively,
- 21:15Speaker 1: specifically from a defensive standpoint, how Vic Fangio's defense is
- 21:19Speaker 1: gonna perform right out of the gate and just consistently
- 21:21Speaker 1: throughout the year. And for me, I'm not just trying
- 21:25Speaker 1: to come up with certain stories to be concerned about.
- 21:29Speaker 1: But something that's really been on my mind is one
- 21:32Speaker 1: particular player on the defensive line and with regard to
- 21:36Speaker 1: the pass rush that we're gonna be seeing a lot
- 21:38Speaker 1: more of, but we haven't seen too much of him
- 21:40Speaker 1: in the preseason, and that's Bryce Huff. I mean it
- 21:44Speaker 1: is he ready for an every down type of role,
- 21:47Speaker 1: because we did see him in the Patriots game where
- 21:50Speaker 1: things look pretty promising. He logged three tackles and twelve plays.
- 21:54Speaker 1: I know that's not a ton, but he played against
- 21:56Speaker 1: the run, rushed against the pass, and he remained in
- 21:59Speaker 1: the game in third down base scenarios. But at the
- 22:02Speaker 1: end of the day, twenty six years old, this first
- 22:05Speaker 1: season with the team on a three year, fifty one
- 22:08Speaker 1: point one million dollar contract, and he's essentially replacing Hassan Reddick.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Hassan Reddick, who had eleven sacks last year, he was
- 22:16Speaker 1: the defense's most productive player in twenty twenty three. He
- 22:21Speaker 1: is going to have to really step up Bryce Huff is,
- 22:25Speaker 1: and we just don't know what to expect. We have
- 22:27Speaker 1: no idea what to expect because when he was with
- 22:29Speaker 1: the New York Jets, it was basically a platoon player
- 22:32Speaker 1: on third down and within like two minute base situations.
- 22:36Speaker 1: So can he have that every down roll on this team.
- 22:40Speaker 1: He's a guy that I'm really gonna be looking at
- 22:43Speaker 1: during the first few games of this season to see
- 22:45Speaker 1: what type of impact he's having. And look, I don't
- 22:48Speaker 1: think he's necessarily gonna be able to replicate what Hassan
- 22:50Speaker 1: Reddick did with eleven sacks, you know, you know, his
- 22:53Speaker 1: first year with this team. Maybe he does, maybe he
- 22:55Speaker 1: surprises us, but it's a lot of productivity and a
- 22:59Speaker 1: lot to put on his show. I don't know. It's
- 23:01Speaker 1: just this defensive line and specifically Bryce huff that that's
- 23:04Speaker 1: what I'm really going to be looking at. Earlier this season.
- 23:07Speaker 3: Before I talked about Bryce huff Just kudos to Howie
- 23:11Speaker 3: for making the Bryce Huff for Hassan Redick basically yes,
- 23:15Speaker 3: And because the Hassan Reddick Jets experience has been a
- 23:20Speaker 3: complete shit show, he hasn't reported. I think his finds
- 23:23Speaker 3: are up to three million. Do it'll be a three
- 23:25Speaker 3: million after this weekend if he doesn't report, because the
- 23:28Speaker 3: third preseason game, how the hell do you not have
- 23:32Speaker 3: a deal in place before the trade? How he probably
- 23:37Speaker 3: did with Huff, Like it's unbelievable, Like the Jets have
- 23:41Speaker 3: made some good moves, but they're also still the Jets
- 23:44Speaker 3: and he still has not reported or signed a deal
- 23:46Speaker 3: or it's a shit show. But Bryce Huff is a
- 23:50Speaker 3: smaller player, platoon player. The Jets defensive line was really good,
- 23:54Speaker 3: especially especially the interior, so that helped. So I like
- 23:58Speaker 3: Bryce Huff as long as I'm going to go back
- 24:00Speaker 3: to one of my big concerns. Honestly, I'll just say now,
- 24:05Speaker 3: the defensive tackle position is a massive question mark in
- 24:09Speaker 3: my in my opinion, is Jalen Carter is the big
- 24:13Speaker 3: guy Jordan Davis Burton Davis. Are those two three down
- 24:19Speaker 3: players right? Or does Davis had to come out and
- 24:22Speaker 3: rotate that? That's fine, But like if those guys don't.
- 24:26Speaker 3: Like Fletcher Cox was there last year, right, and they
- 24:29Speaker 3: had great tackle play, and that was the reason Hassan
- 24:31Speaker 3: Reddick for the past season or two was able to
- 24:34Speaker 3: really explode without that presence. I don't know. Bryce up
- 24:39Speaker 3: is awesome, but what's he going to look like without
- 24:42Speaker 3: that presence in the middle. I think that's a huge,
- 24:44Speaker 3: huge topic for the defense. Besides the backers, the secondary
- 24:48Speaker 3: is a concern. I have a whole list of things here,
- 24:50Speaker 3: but like I think that Bryce Hugh thing without the
- 24:52Speaker 3: tackles is as little as a big concern because I
- 24:55Speaker 3: don't know how they're going to perform the tackles.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, Seriously, there's got there. They're a question all
- 25:00Speaker 1: over the place when it comes to this defense. You said, yes,
- 25:03Speaker 1: I mean, of course, linebackers. We have been seeing some
- 25:05Speaker 1: good stuff from the linebackers, but it's still it's preseason,
- 25:08Speaker 1: it's training camp. You know, I'm not gonna trust anything yet.
- 25:11Speaker 1: I love the promise of Jeremiah Trotter Junior, but he's
- 25:14Speaker 1: a rookie. He's gonna be facing some really really intense
- 25:18Speaker 1: competition over the course of eighteen weeks. It's gonna happen,
- 25:22Speaker 1: and I to Kobe Dean. Yeah, he's been on fire
- 25:26Speaker 1: recently at a great game in that Patriots game. I
- 25:29Speaker 1: mentioned earlier with with regard to Bryce Huff But like
- 25:33Speaker 1: Kobe Dean, is he gonna be able to stay healthy?
- 25:35Speaker 1: Of course that's the big question mark. But what type
- 25:37Speaker 1: of impact is he going to have? Is he gonna
- 25:39Speaker 1: be able to cover in space? So where do you
- 25:42Speaker 1: want to go with regard to your Eagles talk here.
- 25:45Speaker 3: Well, let's just finish up the defense. I'll start with this.
- 25:48Speaker 3: We played the Patriots. They're probably gonna get the first
- 25:51Speaker 3: pick of the draft this year, right, A horrible team.
- 25:54Speaker 3: You played against their starters and kind of second stringers.
- 25:57Speaker 3: It's gonna be a disaster there. So I kind of
- 26:00Speaker 3: get granted salt. You have to like look positioned by position.
- 26:03Speaker 3: The linebackers are going to be what they are. We
- 26:04Speaker 3: haven't had good linebacker coreps in a long time. I'm
- 26:08Speaker 3: more concerned about the secondary. I like the pieces. I
- 26:11Speaker 3: like what Fangio is saying. But if you read between
- 26:13Speaker 3: the lines, Fangio is kind of saying, like, I like
- 26:16Speaker 3: what we have. We'll figure it out.
- 26:18Speaker 1: We'll figure it out. Yeah, And I read.
- 26:21Speaker 3: The athletic piece recently, the five questions going into the
- 26:24Speaker 3: last preseason game, it's a lot of Fangio going, we'll
- 26:28Speaker 3: get there. Yeah, we're going to do this. We've got
- 26:30Speaker 3: to see what we have there. It's like, dude, we
- 26:32Speaker 3: got one game left right now.
- 26:35Speaker 1: The good thing is we you know.
- 26:37Speaker 3: They actually have a defensive coordinator this year. That's nice
- 26:39Speaker 3: to have as opposed to last year with Matt Patricia.
- 26:42Speaker 3: So it's good that he likes what he's seeing, Like,
- 26:45Speaker 3: I hope the quinon Mitchell. Yes, Cooper de john should
- 26:50Speaker 3: be back this weekend. I'm hoping we get to see
- 26:53Speaker 3: him play against the Vikings.
- 26:55Speaker 2: I like.
- 26:55Speaker 3: I like the pieces back there because they're going to
- 26:57Speaker 3: have to be really freaking good at the defensive line
- 26:59Speaker 3: does and perform, and the linebackers are mediocre like they
- 27:02Speaker 3: always are with this team. That's one of my biggest
- 27:05Speaker 3: My biggest concern is the defensive line and how it
- 27:08Speaker 3: affects the secondary defensively. Like the pieces, but he's still like,
- 27:13Speaker 3: like Fangio is full on saying, I'm still moving guys around.
- 27:16Speaker 3: I don't know what the hell to do right now,
- 27:18Speaker 3: right and Mitchell's basically I don't know a couple of quotes,
- 27:22Speaker 3: Mitchell has been saying, like, put me anywhere, I can
- 27:24Speaker 3: do whatever. I can do whatever. It's like, you're rookie.
- 27:26Speaker 3: I don't like the fact that you don't have a
- 27:28Speaker 3: set spot right that that concerns me. And can we
- 27:33Speaker 3: just jump the other side of the ball because I
- 27:35Speaker 3: have that's my biggest concern on the team.
- 27:38Speaker 1: We're likely the offensive line.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Offensive line, Yeah, correct, that's my I'm not I'm not
- 27:45Speaker 3: sure you're gonna believe this, Jeff, But the guard is hurt.
- 27:50Speaker 3: I'm shocked. I think I've said it ten times. Like
- 27:56Speaker 3: when I saw that he limped off the field, I'm like, oh,
- 27:59Speaker 3: I mean the first round bust. Yeah, puked the first days,
- 28:03Speaker 3: three to seventy five pounds. He's hurt. Oh, I can't
- 28:06Speaker 3: believe it. We have to find another guard that's great
- 28:09Speaker 3: like that. I haven't seen any of the starters yet.
- 28:12Speaker 3: I hate the fact that Nick Sirianni doesn't play any
- 28:14Speaker 3: of the starters. On offense, Pat Mahomes is playing like
- 28:20Speaker 3: he just won a Super Bowl, but he's playing in
- 28:22Speaker 3: the first quarter. Yeah, what are you playing?
- 28:24Speaker 2: Nick?
- 28:24Speaker 3: That's for a whole another show. But it does it
- 28:27Speaker 3: does play into like, can we see the starters for
- 28:30Speaker 3: one series, this, this next, It would be nice. The
- 28:35Speaker 3: offensive line looks like Swiss cheese, and I haven't seen
- 28:37Speaker 3: the quarterback or they running back play together yet.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Yeah, very very good points, very good points. I I
- 28:45Speaker 1: the left side of the line I am totally fine
- 28:47Speaker 1: with at this point. I'm getting to the point too
- 28:50Speaker 1: where just based on what you're hearing. With regard to
- 28:52Speaker 1: Cam Jurgens, He's no Jason Kelcey, of course, but I
- 28:56Speaker 1: think he's gonna be able to. I think he's gonna
- 28:57Speaker 1: hold up. But man, Lane's got to stay healthy and
- 29:00Speaker 1: we know he's had health problems over the years. And
- 29:02Speaker 1: that right guard position, Man, geez, you're absolutely great. I'm worried, Yes,
- 29:06Speaker 1: I'm worried and concerned about it.
- 29:08Speaker 3: So my take is like, Okay, I listen. Know a
- 29:12Speaker 3: lot of podcasts about the preseason. Every team is kind
- 29:15Speaker 3: of razor not every team, but most Almost every team
- 29:17Speaker 3: is like razor thin in terms of depth.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:19Speaker 3: Yeah, like, if we lose this guy and this guy,
- 29:21Speaker 3: we're in trouble.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Right.
- 29:23Speaker 3: Eagles are right there too, right, they have they have
- 29:25Speaker 3: a high high ceiling. They really do. They could win
- 29:28Speaker 3: fourteen games. I wouldn't be shocked. Yeah, they also have
- 29:30Speaker 3: a high floor, but that floor is like nine and eight, yeah,
- 29:34Speaker 3: my opinion. And if they have one or two or
- 29:37Speaker 3: three injuries where they really can't take them, like Jalen
- 29:41Speaker 3: Carter's hurt and Lane Johnson's hurt, Holy hell, nine and
- 29:45Speaker 3: eight and we're barely in the playoffs and we're playing
- 29:47Speaker 3: San Fran in the first round, like yeah, oh no,
- 29:50Speaker 3: like like we don't have a third receiver. It's that
- 29:53Speaker 3: kind of that kind of stuff going on right now.
- 29:56Speaker 3: It might all come together by week three and we're like,
- 29:58Speaker 3: oh three and oh screw this. But just kind of
- 30:01Speaker 3: this stuff I'm seeing in preseason, like relying on guys
- 30:04Speaker 3: that we should not be relying on, including the guy
- 30:06Speaker 3: you know, yeah, mccaffected. So that's my biggest concern is
- 30:10Speaker 3: like razor thin air, like right, yeah, So I.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Do well regard to the wide receiver position again recording
- 30:19Speaker 1: this Wednesday night, I do think the Eagles are gonna
- 30:21Speaker 1: end up trading for a wide receiver. I do think
- 30:23Speaker 1: they're gonna trade for a wide receiver. Three, A veteran,
- 30:26Speaker 1: some guy who's been in the league for quite some time.
- 30:29Speaker 1: More of a possession player, a guy like Robert Woods
- 30:31Speaker 1: or something perhaps from the from the Texans, because Texans
- 30:35Speaker 1: are very rich at wide receiver. As we know.
- 30:38Speaker 3: I'm here, I'm hearing Dotson from the commandit that comes
- 30:41Speaker 3: Yes Central there.
- 30:43Speaker 1: I wouldn't mind, not at all, Yes, not bad at all.
- 30:47Speaker 1: I want a possession guy too, good good guy on
- 30:50Speaker 1: third down, so.
- 30:53Speaker 3: Which we don't have on the roster right now in
- 30:54Speaker 3: my opinion.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, exactly. All right, Well, we are gonna get
- 30:58Speaker 1: to a break. But if you are liking what you're here,
- 31:01Speaker 1: and you're listening to us for the first time, second time,
- 31:03Speaker 1: third time, we'd appreciate if you subscribe on whatever our

- 31:15Speaker 1: Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com. Love to hear
- 31:18Speaker 1: your thoughts on anything going on in the world of
- 31:21Speaker 1: Philly sports. We'd love to read your email here on
- 31:22Speaker 1: the show and respond to it. We are going to
- 31:25Speaker 1: take that quick break rate now and we'll be back
- 31:28Speaker 1: in just a bit. All right, we are back, and
- 31:32Speaker 1: now it's time to get into some Philadelphia seventy six
- 31:35Speaker 1: Ers talk. Yeah, it's been quiet on the Sixers front
- 31:38Speaker 1: now for a few weeks here, but they've added a
- 31:43Speaker 1: depth piece because they have had a serious depth problem
- 31:47Speaker 1: at the Ford position.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Yeah do it.
- 31:50Speaker 3: What's his name?
- 31:51Speaker 1: It's Gershan yup yuboseel yub A Selly youb a selly
- 31:58Speaker 1: damn it. I almost got there almost.
- 32:01Speaker 3: When I saw the topic, I was sitting on the
- 32:03Speaker 3: couch with my daughter and I'm like, this is give
- 32:05Speaker 3: me my favorite part of the show.
- 32:07Speaker 1: I can't talk. I've got I can't seriously Russian names,
- 32:11Speaker 1: French names here.
- 32:13Speaker 3: She she just had French in high school, and she's like,
- 32:16Speaker 3: she said it, and I was like, just not gonna
- 32:18Speaker 3: say it right.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Yabu selli yaba sally yaba sellly I gotta I'm like
- 32:22Speaker 1: one of those idiots. I gotta say it over and
- 32:24Speaker 1: over like two dozen times before I can do. And
- 32:26Speaker 1: I still mess it up, of course. But anyway, Daryl
- 32:30Speaker 1: Morey here has potentially put an end to this forward
- 32:34Speaker 1: position depth that was a little concerning as we're getting
- 32:38Speaker 1: ready to head into this Philadelphia seventy six er season.
- 32:41Speaker 1: They sat back watched the summer Olympics and French pro
- 32:46Speaker 1: Gershan Yabuselli. He's now gonna there we go. Yeah, it's
- 32:50Speaker 1: now gonna be joining this Sixers team. And I didn't
- 32:56Speaker 1: know who he was aside from watching the Olympics Eric, Like,
- 32:59Speaker 1: I really didn't know who he was. But he's gonna
- 33:02Speaker 1: add some physicality to this seventy six ers bench unit
- 33:07Speaker 1: for sure. The one thing I don't like from my
- 33:10Speaker 1: understanding is what I've read and seen thus far, he's
- 33:13Speaker 1: not a top tier rebounder, so that's kind of an
- 33:18Speaker 1: issue here. I don't know what are your overall thoughts
- 33:20Speaker 1: on this signing, the depth that it's going to give
- 33:22Speaker 1: this team, specifically on the bench.
- 33:25Speaker 3: Well, he can't rebound or shoot, so he's an undersized
- 33:31Speaker 3: power forward. It's why he didn't make it in the league.
- 33:34Speaker 3: He played for Boston for two seasons and went back
- 33:36Speaker 3: to France this past year. But from from things I'm
- 33:42Speaker 3: reading and hearing, like he's he really worked on his
- 33:44Speaker 3: game and he really worked on his body. You saw
- 33:47Speaker 3: him in the Olympics, the Guy's house, the famous plays
- 33:52Speaker 3: he dunked on Lebron and just destroyed him, and it
- 33:56Speaker 3: probably got into contract probably you know, Yes, honestly, But
- 34:00Speaker 3: France played really well. He looked really good, and it's
- 34:04Speaker 3: a good signing for depth. It's two million. It's a
- 34:07Speaker 3: dropping the bucket for the sixers. But when that happened,
- 34:11Speaker 3: I think all thirty teams were like, oh, this guy's interesting, right,
- 34:14Speaker 3: and Darryl Morey swooped in and got him, and I
- 34:16Speaker 3: was like, Okay, I like that move because when I
- 34:20Speaker 3: cut off, all the other teams beat him to the punch.
- 34:23Speaker 3: You paid nothing. If he works out, he works out right.
- 34:27Speaker 3: And again he's much bigger than he was I think
- 34:31Speaker 3: when he was in the league. His rebounding better. Offensively,
- 34:35Speaker 3: who cares, right, he's going to play twelve to fifteen
- 34:38Speaker 3: minutes and he's a big body off the bench. What
- 34:42Speaker 3: they need? My brother and I were texting me about it,
- 34:43Speaker 3: like we're looking at the roster. We're texting back and
- 34:46Speaker 3: forth and we're like, what they're missing probably a shooter.
- 34:49Speaker 3: Right after they get you have a selly. It's like, Okay,
- 34:52Speaker 3: they got the rebounding. Hopefully now they needed a shooter.
- 34:55Speaker 3: But the fact we're talking about like twelve to fifteen
- 34:58Speaker 3: minute players means the roster prutty set. This is probably
- 35:01Speaker 3: the best roster, most professional roster they've had in a
- 35:03Speaker 3: long time. We've talked, we've talked about the one hundred times,
- 35:07Speaker 3: the window within beads like this year, maybe next. Yeah,
- 35:11Speaker 3: even though they signed Paul George for like what eight
- 35:13Speaker 3: years or.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Some shit, you know, twelve years.
- 35:16Speaker 3: Yeah, but like it, this is a good signing for
- 35:20Speaker 3: a veteran team. We can ease the kid in. He
- 35:22Speaker 3: doesn't have to play much like they're gonna give him
- 35:24Speaker 3: a ton of reps early in the season. Again, a
- 35:28Speaker 3: lot of the signings he made, that more he made
- 35:31Speaker 3: were no lose, Like you can't really lose signing Kyle
- 35:35Speaker 3: Lowry to a small deal. You can't lose. Getting Caleb Martin,
- 35:38Speaker 3: you can't lose. I don't think it's a you can't
- 35:40Speaker 3: lose signing his kid. That's my take on the on
- 35:43Speaker 3: the signing.
- 35:43Speaker 1: What do you think about the fact that he shot
- 35:46Speaker 1: over forty percent from deep during the last three EuroLeague seasons?
- 35:53Speaker 1: That sounds pretty good to me, But in terms of
- 35:55Speaker 1: the euro League, it's much different, of course, than much
- 35:59Speaker 1: different than the NBA, of course, But I look at
- 36:01Speaker 1: that that percentage, that forty percent shooting from deep, and
- 36:04Speaker 1: I like it, you know, like you said, though, he's
- 36:07Speaker 1: not the greatest shooter in the world, but I see
- 36:08Speaker 1: a stat like that and I say, okay, I'll take it.
- 36:12Speaker 3: And the one thing I will say is, like the
- 36:14Speaker 3: throughout the past like twenty years, the NBA has kind
- 36:17Speaker 3: of taken on a lot of EU League style basketball.
- 36:20Speaker 3: So if he shot well over there, it's great. I'm
- 36:23Speaker 3: just going off his NBA stats because it's a totally
- 36:25Speaker 3: different I said, it's kind of a different game, but
- 36:28Speaker 3: like a lot of the long form shooting from the
- 36:30Speaker 3: from the forwards, and the kind of the rotations and
- 36:33Speaker 3: stuff kind of mirror the euro League. But over there
- 36:36Speaker 3: it's a lot of wide open three pointers. That's like,
- 36:38Speaker 3: and he might get them because like if he's playing
- 36:40Speaker 3: with Maxi and Paul George and Caleb Martin, he's probably
- 36:45Speaker 3: gonna have some open three pointers. If you can hit him, awesome,
- 36:48Speaker 3: if he can give us like eight point six rebounds
- 36:51Speaker 3: a game. Perfect signing for two million dollars again, a
- 36:54Speaker 3: no lowse signing.
- 36:55Speaker 1: All right, very good. Well, before we head to what
- 36:59Speaker 1: we were thrown down on the table this week, which
- 37:01Speaker 1: is gonna be some Phillies talk. We're gonna get into
- 37:03Speaker 1: some Phillies talk right here just about how this upcoming
- 37:06Speaker 1: stretch is gonna look until the end of the month.
- 37:09Speaker 1: And I just just in terms of the confidence where
- 37:12Speaker 1: we are with this team right now winning games that
- 37:14Speaker 1: they should be winning, I'm not sure where they're at
- 37:17Speaker 1: right now with the Braves. In this game they were
- 37:20Speaker 1: they were losing. They are okay because they were losing
- 37:24Speaker 1: two zero at one point, I'm like Jesus, like, this
- 37:28Speaker 1: is the Braves, who are you know, when healthy, a
- 37:31Speaker 1: very good team, but we know that they consistently are
- 37:35Speaker 1: losing players. The Braves are, and I mean they have
- 37:38Speaker 1: after this Brave series, They've got the Royals, then they've
- 37:42Speaker 1: got the Astros and at the end of the month
- 37:45Speaker 1: that go they go back to the Braves again, and
- 37:48Speaker 1: I think they really need to solidify themselves with regard
- 37:51Speaker 1: to this Braves team who has lost some players to
- 37:54Speaker 1: injury and it's been way too up and down. We're
- 37:58Speaker 1: gonna get into it as well with Eric Moore tell
- 38:00Speaker 1: you in a little bit here, but man, the pitching,
- 38:04Speaker 1: we're coming up to that line in the sand, Eric,
- 38:06Speaker 1: where they're gonna have to make some hard decisions in
- 38:09Speaker 1: terms of what to do with this pitching, whether six
- 38:11Speaker 1: man rotation time, and just how they're utilizing some of
- 38:15Speaker 1: these starters. You know, getting Ranger Suarez back is going
- 38:19Speaker 1: to be I think huge, and I think there's gonna
- 38:21Speaker 1: be a lot put on his shoulders. Again. I know
- 38:23Speaker 1: we're gonna be talking to Eric about this as well,
- 38:25Speaker 1: but I'm like, we're not feeling confident, like one hundred
- 38:30Speaker 1: percent confident like we were in May by any stretch.
- 38:34Speaker 1: But I don't know what are your thoughts right now?
- 38:36Speaker 1: Like maybe I'm just being a downer. I'm not trying
- 38:39Speaker 1: to be a downer, but I just see guys like
- 38:42Speaker 1: Bryce and Stott, who is completely crap the bed this season.
- 38:46Speaker 1: He just doesn't have it. And maybe he comes on
- 38:48Speaker 1: in the fall, maybe he comes on when they absolutely
- 38:51Speaker 1: need him, you know, Marsha and every now and again
- 38:54Speaker 1: is streaky and uh, I don't know even Bryce Harper
- 38:58Speaker 1: streaky for being Harper, And yes he is streaky throughout
- 39:02Speaker 1: his career every now and again, but man, a lot
- 39:05Speaker 1: of players on this team just aren't living up to
- 39:08Speaker 1: certain potential. And I'm complaining about this and they're freaking
- 39:11Speaker 1: they're killing it, you know what. I mean, they're just like,
- 39:13Speaker 1: this is baseball. I need to like to hold on.
- 39:15Speaker 1: I just slapped myself in the face.
- 39:18Speaker 2: You should.
- 39:19Speaker 3: I mean, they just want over the braves.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Okay, games done they want Okay, I'm glad they won
- 39:25Speaker 1: just one.
- 39:26Speaker 3: So there leads back up to seven games in the division.
- 39:30Speaker 3: Like all you really worried about now is like, can
- 39:32Speaker 3: you get the top seed? Seriously, they're one game under
- 39:35Speaker 3: the Dodgers as of right now, and like, hopefully you
- 39:38Speaker 3: go out and win tomorrow. Nola pitched pretty well tonight.
- 39:41Speaker 3: Actually I watched most of the game. Gave up one
- 39:43Speaker 3: bad home run and that's all. That's all was was
- 39:45Speaker 3: two runs. Yeah again, I was I was like, well,
- 39:52Speaker 3: a couple of weeks ago, I was at an eight.
- 39:54Speaker 3: I think, like the spiral is.
- 39:57Speaker 1: Happening, Yes, the Concerno meter.
- 39:59Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, Well right now they're nine to nine in August,
- 40:02Speaker 3: which is not bad because you're going into the last
- 40:04Speaker 3: month of the season. You're hoping the older guys like
- 40:07Speaker 3: like not older, but like heart. Harper's having it just
- 40:10Speaker 3: a brutal second half of the year. Yeah, and I'm
- 40:14Speaker 3: not surprised by it because I would actually give him
- 40:17Speaker 3: some days off here coming up soon against Kansas Sit
- 40:20Speaker 3: him against Kansas City and Houston. Absolutely, I would say
- 40:23Speaker 3: against Kansas City, send him the whole fucking series because
- 40:26Speaker 3: this is his first like full season and how long
- 40:29Speaker 3: I know he played the he played spring training and
- 40:32Speaker 3: the full year. He hasn't done that in ages, especially
- 40:35Speaker 3: for the Phillies, and I think he's wearing down. He'll
- 40:38Speaker 3: never admit that, but it's very obvious that he hits
- 40:42Speaker 3: the All Star break. I was hoping it made the
- 40:45Speaker 3: All Star team. Just go rest in wherever the hell
- 40:48Speaker 3: he lives now, But I I'm not worried. I think
- 40:53Speaker 3: the return of Rangers Suarez, some of the moves they
- 40:56Speaker 3: made in the bullpen, I like, I think they're ready
- 40:59Speaker 3: for a And you talk about Bryson, Scott and Marsh
- 41:03Speaker 3: being streaky, Look they've always been. Like I was hoping
- 41:06Speaker 3: Stott would be a little better this year. Absolutely everyday player.
- 41:09Speaker 3: But Marsh's Marsh is. We got him from the Angels
- 41:12Speaker 3: for nothing. He's he's a throwing you know what I mean.
- 41:15Speaker 3: Like he's got long, wet hair like a wrestler, and
- 41:17Speaker 3: he has a school like like he has cool quotes
- 41:20Speaker 3: to the media, but he is what he is, like
- 41:23Speaker 3: this team, bring back Ranger rest some of your older guys.
- 41:28Speaker 3: Just just start rolling in mid September and just go
- 41:31Speaker 3: for it at the end. I'm not completely worried.
- 41:34Speaker 1: I think the cold that we're feeling from the team
- 41:37Speaker 1: right now it could be a really good omen to
- 41:40Speaker 1: them just getting hot when they need to get hot
- 41:42Speaker 1: as they're getting into as they're getting into the postseason.
- 41:44Speaker 1: So again I'll slap my slap myself in the face,
- 41:48Speaker 1: and uh.
- 41:50Speaker 3: You know what they need, and it's coming up. This
- 41:52Speaker 3: is what they need. Their road records sucks. So some
- 41:55Speaker 3: of the Dodgers road record. Their home records amazing. So
- 41:58Speaker 3: so's the Phillies. They need a nice home stand against
- 42:02Speaker 3: some good teams, against some hatable teams. Yeah, and it's
- 42:06Speaker 3: coming Like this KC series, I hate it because it's like,
- 42:10Speaker 3: what the hell are we doing?
- 42:11Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 42:11Speaker 3: Are we out there?
- 42:12Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 42:13Speaker 3: Playing this nothing team. At the end of August, we
- 42:16Speaker 3: come home though, we're playing the Astros. Everybody hates the Astros. Yes,
- 42:21Speaker 3: and it's freaking Star Wars Night on Monday's Goya Latino
- 42:24Speaker 3: Family Celebration on a Tuesday. I'm looking at right now,
- 42:28Speaker 3: it's perfect for the home stand and then they play
- 42:30Speaker 3: the goddamn Braves that weekend. Yep, that is the perfect
- 42:34Speaker 3: way to end the month. I hope they go five
- 42:36Speaker 3: and one and just kick ass and everyone falls in
- 42:39Speaker 3: love again with the team. I really feel like the
- 42:42Speaker 3: hiccup with k C is one thing. I'm thinking they
- 42:45Speaker 3: come home and just roll against two teams that the
- 42:48Speaker 3: city hates.
- 42:49Speaker 1: Yes, yes, it's that would get everything back in gear.
- 42:53Speaker 1: I'd say, back in gear. They're up seven games. You're
- 42:56Speaker 1: talking about.
- 42:58Speaker 3: The second third best record in baseball. Yes, and we're like.
- 43:02Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, you're nine to nine here, Hong is.
- 43:04Speaker 3: The last two seasons at this date, We're like, you
- 43:07Speaker 3: make the playoffs.
- 43:08Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, a bunch of dog. Well, I'm a dope.
- 43:11Speaker 1: I know I'm a dope.
- 43:12Speaker 3: Completely yourself again, please, Oh we're on camera. He's actually
- 43:17Speaker 3: smacking himself.
- 43:18Speaker 1: Yes, right, Oh buddy, I'm gonna let you go here.
- 43:22Speaker 1: I'm gonna we're gonna get to what we're thrown down
- 43:24Speaker 1: on table here. He got anything else before we head out?
- 43:26Speaker 3: If you want to go on vacation, try Buffalo.
- 43:29Speaker 1: Try Buffalo. You're wearing a hoodie, a Buffalo hoodie. Look
- 43:33Speaker 1: at that.
- 43:34Speaker 3: My dog's gonna play there. Oh yeah, it was like
- 43:37Speaker 3: a college visit vacation thing.
- 43:39Speaker 1: Yeah, awesome, awesome, all right, buddy, let you get going.
- 43:43Speaker 1: Folks are gonna take quick break to pay some bills.
- 43:45Speaker 1: We're gonna be back in just a bit. All right,
- 43:48Speaker 1: we are back, and now let's get in some more
- 43:50Speaker 1: Phillies talk. We're gonna dive into this team a little
- 43:53Speaker 1: bit more detail. That's what we're throwing down on the
- 43:55Speaker 1: table and now on the table. It is great to
- 44:01Speaker 1: have him back on the podcast, joining us from that
- 44:05Speaker 1: Balls out of here dot com, one of our favorite
- 44:07Speaker 1: fan sided sites. You can find him on the Twitter
- 44:10Speaker 1: slash x at Eric underscore Moritelly, We've got the one
- 44:14Speaker 1: and only Eric Morritelli. How you doing, Buddy good. Yeah,
- 44:18Speaker 1: it's great to have you back on the show. Love
- 44:20Speaker 1: having a future or previous conversations with you, and hopefully
- 44:24Speaker 1: more future conversations with you as well. But getting into
- 44:27Speaker 1: this Philadelphia Phillies team at like, oh my gosh, what
- 44:31Speaker 1: we have been seeing from this pitching staff over the
- 44:34Speaker 1: course of you know how many weeks since the All
- 44:36Speaker 1: Star break. We've seen some good, we've certainly seen some
- 44:38Speaker 1: not so good looks. As we know, Eric, they haven't
- 44:43Speaker 1: been the same pitching staff since coming out of the
- 44:46Speaker 1: All Star Break, and even before the All Star Break,
- 44:48Speaker 1: there were some hiccups that we saw from the starters
- 44:50Speaker 1: and that we saw from the bullpen as well. The
- 44:54Speaker 1: time to focus on the smallest of details in terms
- 44:58Speaker 1: of pitching is really coming as September is right around
- 45:03Speaker 1: the corner. So this is coming really really close for
- 45:07Speaker 1: Rob Thompson and just for this this managerial and coaching
- 45:10Speaker 1: staff to really start fine tuning the details of what
- 45:13Speaker 1: the pitching is going to look like, the strategy for
- 45:16Speaker 1: the starters, and how many bullpen games we're going to
- 45:18Speaker 1: be seeing is going to be key for this pitching
- 45:21Speaker 1: staff moving forward here. So I wanted to start off
- 45:23Speaker 1: our conversation about what your thoughts were on how you
- 45:27Speaker 1: know Caleb Cotham, how he is going to approach the
- 45:31Speaker 1: quote next chapter within this Philly season in terms of
- 45:35Speaker 1: the pitching. What are your thoughts here, man, from what
- 45:38Speaker 1: we've been seeing and what we may see down the road.
- 45:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I trust Caleb Cotham probably more than
- 45:44Speaker 4: any pitching coach in recent memory. Yeah, and I really
- 45:47Speaker 4: think you know these he has the guys and they
- 45:50Speaker 4: know what they're doing. Right at this point, you don't
- 45:51Speaker 4: really have that many young guys. You know, Nolan the veteran, he.
- 45:54Speaker 2: Knows what to do. Wheeler goes through his routine.
- 45:57Speaker 4: I think an important part to think about with the
- 45:59Speaker 4: pitching staff is, you know, missing Ranger here for a
- 46:01Speaker 4: while and having to use, you know, triple A guys.
- 46:04Speaker 4: You know, the Tyler Phillips story was nice, but he
- 46:07Speaker 4: kind of showed that he is a triple A pitcher, right.
- 46:09Speaker 4: He had a couple of couple good outings. You know,
- 46:13Speaker 4: Alard had a couple of good starts too, But you know,
- 46:14Speaker 4: these guys are there for minor league debts. Basically, you
- 46:17Speaker 4: don't want these You don't have to rely on these
- 46:19Speaker 4: guys if they have to make a spot start because
- 46:21Speaker 4: of injuries, or to give a guy an extra day
- 46:24Speaker 4: or two between starts. By all means that that's fine.
- 46:27Speaker 4: But we're starting to getting a crunch time now, and
- 46:28Speaker 4: I think one of the biggest things is getting Ranger
- 46:30Speaker 4: back and what we get from Ranger Suarez, because remember,
- 46:33Speaker 4: you know, in the beginning of the season, it was
- 46:36Speaker 4: he was arguably our best pitcher at that time. He
- 46:39Speaker 4: won the Pitcher of the Month for the National League
- 46:41Speaker 4: in April. Uh, he really was really solid up until
- 46:45Speaker 4: about July, which is when you know he kind of
- 46:47Speaker 4: started having the back tightness missed the All Star Game.
- 46:50Speaker 4: So I think it depends on what we're going to
- 46:51Speaker 4: get from him. I think that should really help steady
- 46:53Speaker 4: the rotation. Now, I'm not expecting him to nessily come
- 46:56Speaker 4: back and be a sub three pitcher, right you look
- 46:59Speaker 4: at his career. I think he has like a career
- 47:01Speaker 4: three thirty eight as a starter or something like that era.
- 47:06Speaker 2: So you know that's not bad, Like, that's not.
- 47:07Speaker 4: Me saying anything bad about Ranger here, It's just, you know,
- 47:11Speaker 4: what we were seeing I think was a little bit unreasable.
- 47:13Speaker 4: If he goes back and pitches to a you know,
- 47:14Speaker 4: three three, three, four, three five era, that is an
- 47:18Speaker 4: immediate boost to the rotation right there. Yet, other guys,
- 47:21Speaker 4: you know, Christopher Sanchez, who has you know, been pitching
- 47:25Speaker 4: kind of over his head too, And I think a
- 47:26Speaker 4: lot of that credit does go to Caleb Copham going
- 47:30Speaker 4: back to your original point, right, getting what you can
- 47:32Speaker 4: out of some of these guys like Sanchez, like Hoffman
- 47:35Speaker 4: when he came over here. I know he's been struggling
- 47:36Speaker 4: a little bit lately. I'm sure we'll get to that,
- 47:38Speaker 4: but you know, he seems to know how to get
- 47:40Speaker 4: the most out of these guys. I think it's a
- 47:41Speaker 4: long season and I think eventually the innings just start
- 47:45Speaker 4: piling up, so you know it's a struggle. But you know,
- 47:48Speaker 4: Wheeler missed a couple starts around the All Star break.
- 47:51Speaker 4: Hopefully that gave him some time to reset. He seems
- 47:53Speaker 4: to really kind of bounce back strong. Rangers obviously had
- 47:56Speaker 4: a lot of time. He's reaching his innings limit, so
- 48:00Speaker 4: hopefully that's been some time for him to recouperate.
- 48:02Speaker 2: And get ready to go here. So yeah, I mean,
- 48:05Speaker 2: I think you kind of.
- 48:06Speaker 4: Want to avoid as many full pen games as you
- 48:09Speaker 4: can when you have five starters. Now, Taiwan Walker, I know,
- 48:12Speaker 4: has been a very controversial figure right now because he
- 48:16Speaker 4: just can't seem to get it together. But I really think,
- 48:20Speaker 4: you know, they're gonna they're gonna be smart with innings,
- 48:22Speaker 4: especially as you come down, and if they do clinch
- 48:24Speaker 4: a little early, you might see these guys get some
- 48:26Speaker 4: extra time in between stars or maybe even miss the
- 48:29Speaker 4: start just to stay fresh.
- 48:30Speaker 2: For the postseason.
- 48:30Speaker 1: I think what's interesting is your your points specifically about
- 48:34Speaker 1: Ranger Swarres too, because Matt Gelb from The Athletic recently
- 48:38Speaker 1: wrote about how Caleb Cotham was talking about Suarez his
- 48:43Speaker 1: workload and he could actually reach new career highs in
- 48:47Speaker 1: innings this year. In fact, Cotham said, the downtime is
- 48:50Speaker 1: probably a blessing. He's looked unbelievable. A little bit of
- 48:53Speaker 1: rest to reset is probably a good thing for when
- 48:56Speaker 1: we're going to hit the gas we gotta go when
- 48:59Speaker 1: he's a large part and a huge part of why
- 49:01Speaker 1: we're here and if we're going to do what we
- 49:03Speaker 1: want to do. So I think a lot of where
- 49:07Speaker 1: this pitching staff is going to go in the future.
- 49:09Speaker 1: Of course, Zach Wheeler and an Aaron Nola the consistency
- 49:13Speaker 1: that we get from them, but what Ranger Suarez's workload
- 49:16Speaker 1: is here, from what Contham is saying, I think that's
- 49:18Speaker 1: going to be a huge part of this too.
- 49:19Speaker 4: Buddy, Yeah, absolutely, I mean, you know, usually and the
- 49:23Speaker 4: thing is his Ranger has been around for a while,
- 49:24Speaker 4: but remember in the beginning of his career he was
- 49:26Speaker 4: kind of used out of the bullfen he.
- 49:28Speaker 2: Was using a spot starter here and there.
- 49:29Speaker 4: He's been around for longer than I think a lot
- 49:31Speaker 4: of people may realize. But yeah, he's definitely at an
- 49:35Speaker 4: innings you know, he's going to reach an innings max here,
- 49:39Speaker 4: and it's okay to do that, but you just have
- 49:41Speaker 4: to do it smart right. You don't want to blow
- 49:42Speaker 4: by it by one hundred innings, but you know you're
- 49:46Speaker 4: trying to do it incrementally right and by next season,
- 49:49Speaker 4: you know, hopefully he can go a full workload. So
- 49:51Speaker 4: it's kind of just being smart about managing the innings.
- 49:54Speaker 4: And I think you know what we've seen from Ranger
- 49:56Speaker 4: doing that, he really shows you how valuable he can
- 49:59Speaker 4: be to this rotation absolutely.
- 50:01Speaker 1: Well, specifically when it comes to the bullpen. As we're
- 50:03Speaker 1: moving along with the conversation here, you know, we saw
- 50:05Speaker 1: boy Man. We saw some meatballs recently from Jeff Hoffman
- 50:09Speaker 1: that have been detrimental in crucial game situations. And it's
- 50:13Speaker 1: because the Phillies coaching staff and the managing of where
- 50:19Speaker 1: this team is right now, they want their pitchers to
- 50:21Speaker 1: throw first pitch strikes. Totally get that. We saw in
- 50:25Speaker 1: the Mariners game Jeff Hoffman, he allowed a first pitch
- 50:28Speaker 1: double that brought in two runs. Six days later, he
- 50:31Speaker 1: allowed a first pitch walk off home run, and you're like,
- 50:33Speaker 1: oh my gosh, what is happening here with Jeff Hoffman.
- 50:37Speaker 1: But you know, apparently this was an anomaly, as Caleb
- 50:41Speaker 1: Cotham has said in those situations only that it only
- 50:45Speaker 1: happened about two percent of the time, and it happened
- 50:47Speaker 1: in the course of like six days, So a really
- 50:50Speaker 1: bizarre type of situation. I've been thinking to myself in
- 50:53Speaker 1: the back of my head, Eric, what is going on
- 50:55Speaker 1: with Jeff Hoffman here? Still seeing good stuff from him?
- 50:58Speaker 1: And yes, maybe that was an anomaly what we saw
- 51:01Speaker 1: in the Mariners game. And then six days later that again,
- 51:04Speaker 1: that first pitch walk off home run. What are your
- 51:07Speaker 1: thoughts on how Jeff Hoffman, how he's performed since the
- 51:11Speaker 1: West Coast trip, and if you really have any concerns
- 51:14Speaker 1: about him moving forward here.
- 51:16Speaker 4: So it's it's funny because I feel like it's one
- 51:18Speaker 4: of the things I kind of like, you know, for
- 51:20Speaker 4: the Phillies, when when it rains, it pours, right, Yeah,
- 51:21Speaker 4: the offense something that both ends starts going down. Yeah,
- 51:24Speaker 4: So it's uh, I don't know if it's anything new
- 51:27Speaker 4: for Phillies fans to see this type of stuff. And
- 51:29Speaker 4: you know, the beginning of the year, you know, we
- 51:32Speaker 4: talked on the show before about, you know, how the
- 51:34Speaker 4: pitching was just you know, way over what we thought
- 51:37Speaker 4: they were going to see. I mean, and they were,
- 51:39Speaker 4: they were projected to be good, but they were even
- 51:41Speaker 4: out about doing that. Everyone's kind of coming back to
- 51:43Speaker 4: earth a little bit here. I was looking at Hoffman's numbers,
- 51:46Speaker 4: and velocity isn't really an issue like Alvarado's velocity. It
- 51:49Speaker 4: seems to be kind of an issue. So I'm not
- 51:52Speaker 4: really concerned about Hoffman. It might just be, you know,
- 51:54Speaker 4: he's he's being used a lot, right, He's being used
- 51:56Speaker 4: a lot of high leverage situations. I did not a
- 52:01Speaker 4: little bit more. He's getting barreled up a little bit
- 52:03Speaker 4: more frequently than he was pre All Star Break. But
- 52:07Speaker 4: that could just be you know, a little bit of
- 52:08Speaker 4: fatigue too. But I'm not overly concerned. I think he
- 52:12Speaker 4: can you know, I think he can figure it out.
- 52:14Speaker 4: He's not the most alarming guy in the bullpen for me. Now,
- 52:17Speaker 4: obviously this continues for another couple of weeks, then maybe
- 52:20Speaker 4: that's something I had to look at. Maybe it's a
- 52:22Speaker 4: and you know, a fan Ofmi l Stint or something
- 52:24Speaker 4: like that, just to give him a quick breather. But yeah,
- 52:29Speaker 4: I trust him just because his stuff is still there.
- 52:32Speaker 4: Same thing like Strom, I still kind of trust. I
- 52:34Speaker 4: know he's going through a rough patch right now too,
- 52:37Speaker 4: but Alvarado is a scary guy for me right now.
- 52:39Speaker 1: See then, Yeah, you have most concerns about Alvarado at
- 52:42Speaker 1: this point.
- 52:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, big time number one.
- 52:45Speaker 4: A little bit of dropping velocity, especially on that sinker
- 52:48Speaker 4: last night, you know, could not find a strike zone,
- 52:50Speaker 4: lost four batters in an inning.
- 52:52Speaker 2: I think I saw.
- 52:52Speaker 4: It was the first time since twenty fifteen affiliates pitcher
- 52:56Speaker 4: did that. And he just seems completely lost out there.
- 52:59Speaker 4: And it could be a confidence thing, it could be
- 53:01Speaker 4: a physical thing, you know, it's no one's really said
- 53:04Speaker 4: exactly what it is, and they kind of just keep
- 53:07Speaker 4: trouncing them out there. Last night, Hoffmin was warming up
- 53:10Speaker 4: in the bullpen and I read something this morning someone.
- 53:13Speaker 4: I asked Rob Thompson about it last night after the game,
- 53:16Speaker 4: why didn't they go to him?
- 53:17Speaker 2: And he said, Walt was already We told him to sit.
- 53:18Speaker 4: Down because Alvarado was already in the game, so they
- 53:20Speaker 4: wanted to try to give him the inning.
- 53:22Speaker 2: But I mean, when you're in a closed game like
- 53:24Speaker 2: that and your offense isn't really doing much, it's it
- 53:27Speaker 2: is an iffy.
- 53:28Speaker 4: It's an iff he call, you know, going down at
- 53:30Speaker 4: that extra run, you know, and having to make that
- 53:32Speaker 4: fight back just that much harder. So yeah, in terms
- 53:35Speaker 4: of bullpen, Alvarado is the guy who scares me more.
- 53:39Speaker 4: I think Hossmin will get his his stuff straightened out,
- 53:42Speaker 4: just because there's signs there showing that. I don't know
- 53:45Speaker 4: if there's actually anything wrong with them. It might just
- 53:47Speaker 4: be a little bit of bad luck.
- 53:48Speaker 1: All right, Well again, folks, we're talking to Eric Mortelly
- 53:51Speaker 1: from that balls out of Here dot com over at
- 53:54Speaker 1: fan sided and make sure your phone on the Twitter
- 53:57Speaker 1: slash x at Eric underscore Mortel. He's a great, great
- 54:00Speaker 1: follow and I want to get into some bats here
- 54:03Speaker 1: what we've been seeing because my gosh, the offensive inconsistency,
- 54:06Speaker 1: I mean it's still there. Let's talk about Trey Turner
- 54:10Speaker 1: first here from what you have seen him coming back,
- 54:13Speaker 1: and we know he was on a little bit of
- 54:14Speaker 1: a streak there. Who knows if he's able to be
- 54:16Speaker 1: able to sustain that had a couple rough bats last night.
- 54:20Speaker 1: We were recording this on August twenty first here on
- 54:24Speaker 1: Wednesday during the day. What are your thoughts on Trey Turner,
- 54:28Speaker 1: how he's been coming on a little stronger, and what
- 54:31Speaker 1: he means to the bats in this lineup here.
- 54:33Speaker 2: He's a huge part of it, you know.
- 54:34Speaker 4: I mean there's really a handful of guys you know
- 54:37Speaker 4: shorter Turner, Harper to me or kind of the guys
- 54:40Speaker 4: who were there too, you be your big impact bats, right,
- 54:44Speaker 4: So getting him going again was huge. He went through
- 54:46Speaker 4: that slump for a little bit, but it seemed like
- 54:49Speaker 4: that day off reset really did do some good for
- 54:51Speaker 4: him because he came off of that really on a tear. Yeah,
- 54:56Speaker 4: and you really need him there because number one is
- 54:57Speaker 4: speed on the bases. He can make things happen, and
- 55:01Speaker 4: just getting guys on base for you know, Harper and
- 55:04Speaker 4: and Bohm and Katy Honust has been hitting hitting the
- 55:07Speaker 4: ball well too, So just getting getting on base for
- 55:10Speaker 4: those guys, making pitchers think about, you know, him potentially
- 55:13Speaker 4: wiping a bag is really big. So yeah, I mean, Turner,
- 55:18Speaker 4: I think is one of the more crucial parts of
- 55:20Speaker 4: the lineup as we get you know, as we start
- 55:22Speaker 4: heading into September and toward the postseason.
- 55:24Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely you mentioned Bryce Harper. I want to talk
- 55:27Speaker 1: about him next here, Eric, because we haven't seen a
- 55:30Speaker 1: home run from Bryce Harper since August ninth. Maybe not
- 55:34Speaker 1: the biggest deal in the world, but for who he is,
- 55:37Speaker 1: what he means to this team, what he inevitably means
- 55:40Speaker 1: for the offense. I've got some issues here with this
- 55:44Speaker 1: and just a very very inconsistent type of batter. I
- 55:51Speaker 1: think at this point, since the All Star Break, it's
- 55:53Speaker 1: really amazing what we've seen, not in and not in
- 55:55Speaker 1: a great way from Bryce Harper necessarily, What are your
- 55:58Speaker 1: thoughts on Bryce and and where he's at as we're
- 56:01Speaker 1: moving forward.
- 56:02Speaker 4: So with Bryce, it's interesting because even when he's struggling,
- 56:06Speaker 4: you know, he could be zero for forty in his
- 56:08Speaker 4: last you know, however many his last ten games or whatever,
- 56:11Speaker 4: and every time he steps into the play, I'm like,
- 56:13Speaker 4: this could be the advance that changes thing. So he's
- 56:16Speaker 4: not a guy because I mean, he does you know,
- 56:17Speaker 4: he hit, he hits, you know, he does it for power.
- 56:20Speaker 4: So he's obviously prone to to streakiness, and he has
- 56:22Speaker 4: been kind of over the course of his career, obviously
- 56:25Speaker 4: turning the offense right now with him not really producing
- 56:28Speaker 4: that power, And I think that's one of the big
- 56:29Speaker 4: key things you can look at in kind of this
- 56:31Speaker 4: inconsistent offensive spell they've been in where you know, they'll
- 56:34Speaker 4: put up nine and thirteen runs and then put up
- 56:37Speaker 4: you know, one or two. I think though, with Bryce,
- 56:39Speaker 4: it's just a.
- 56:40Speaker 2: Matter of time.
- 56:41Speaker 4: I think we're gonna work, We're gonna talk about this,
- 56:43Speaker 4: and who knows. It could be it could be tonight,
- 56:45Speaker 4: it could be you know, next week, it could be
- 56:47Speaker 4: the start of September.
- 56:48Speaker 2: But I just think, you know, when.
- 56:49Speaker 4: He goes on tears, he goes on tears, and if
- 56:52Speaker 4: he's if he wants to take if he wants to
- 56:54Speaker 4: wait and let that run through September and October, I
- 56:57Speaker 4: must be okay with that.
- 56:58Speaker 2: As he's a yeah, I like, I just don't worry.
- 57:01Speaker 4: About you know, he's gonna work through it. He has
- 57:03Speaker 4: the track record and you kind of know what you're
- 57:05Speaker 4: gonna get for him. And he's a guy who, I mean,
- 57:07Speaker 4: not like any of them, wants to do poorly at
- 57:09Speaker 4: the plate, but he's a guy who I feel like
- 57:12Speaker 4: like you know, takes it personally and he's just gonna
- 57:14Speaker 4: come out swinging one day and.
- 57:16Speaker 2: Not look back.
- 57:17Speaker 1: I just don't want it funneling down to other aspects
- 57:19Speaker 1: of this team from an offensive standpoint, because he is
- 57:22Speaker 1: such a leader. He is the catalyst really of this offense,
- 57:26Speaker 1: aside from Trey Turner, and I just don't want that
- 57:28Speaker 1: funneling down to other areas and aspects of the team,
- 57:31Speaker 1: because we've seen throughout the course of history baseball that
- 57:34Speaker 1: does happen great players when they slump, the team itself
- 57:37Speaker 1: kind of gets in a bit of a rut, and
- 57:38Speaker 1: I think we're kind of seeing that a little bit here.
- 57:40Speaker 1: But like you said, it is absolutely true. Whenever he
- 57:43Speaker 1: steps up to the player, you're like, Okay, this is it,
- 57:45Speaker 1: this is it, this is gonna happen now. He is
- 57:47Speaker 1: gonna be back on target after this at bat. And
- 57:50Speaker 1: then we're like, yeah, here, But you're absolutely right, that
- 57:52Speaker 1: happens all the time. Let's move on here now, Eric,
- 57:56Speaker 1: to a guy who coming into this season, I'm thinking,
- 57:59Speaker 1: of my elf, he's going to be the second basement
- 58:02Speaker 1: of the future. In fact, we all thought that last
- 58:04Speaker 1: year in twenty twenty three, I'm wondering how we really
- 58:07Speaker 1: should be viewing Bryce and Scott and his future at
- 58:10Speaker 1: second base here, and not just at second base, but
- 58:13Speaker 1: what he means to this Phillies team in the lineup,
- 58:15Speaker 1: because it has been a very underwhelming year.
- 58:17Speaker 4: What are your thoughts so coming into the season, I
- 58:21Speaker 4: was expecting this to be Stots breakout year. Yeah, what
- 58:24Speaker 4: he showed from us in terms of plate discipline, just
- 58:27Speaker 4: working counts last year, I really thought he was going
- 58:31Speaker 4: to take a major step forward. Instead, it seems like
- 58:33Speaker 4: you've taken that step back now. He's still young. Defensively,
- 58:36Speaker 4: he plays a great second base, yes, but you're right,
- 58:39Speaker 4: the bat has been you know, has obviously been lackluster
- 58:42Speaker 4: this season, and it's not it hasn't been a slump, right,
- 58:44Speaker 4: You don't have a slump through almost September, right, So,
- 58:48Speaker 4: and you notice things like he's chasing more pitches out
- 58:50Speaker 4: of the zone, he's chasing more first pitches. So it's
- 58:54Speaker 4: more like it's almost his approach I think is different
- 58:57Speaker 4: than it was last year. And I don't know if
- 58:59Speaker 4: at this point he's just put and pressure himself and
- 59:01Speaker 4: just trying to, you know, trying to make make it work.
- 59:03Speaker 2: But I think if you.
- 59:04Speaker 4: Look at this lineup and talk about you know, you know,
- 59:08Speaker 4: m VP's lineup or biggest disappointments, I hate to say,
- 59:11Speaker 4: but I think Scott has been the biggest disappointment so
- 59:13Speaker 4: far in the Phillies lineup from a guy who from
- 59:16Speaker 4: expectation purposes, right, I know there's other guys who have had,
- 59:19Speaker 4: you know, slumps. I know, you know there's other guys
- 59:22Speaker 4: who aren't the best hitters. But no one's going into
- 59:24Speaker 4: the season thinking Johann Rojas is going to be, uh,
- 59:27Speaker 4: you know, one of the top hitters in the Phillies lineup, right,
- 59:29Speaker 4: whereas Boyce and Scott. I think people went into this
- 59:31Speaker 4: and I don't think I was going to think that
- 59:34Speaker 4: that he was going to go into the season and
- 59:35Speaker 4: take a bit take that big step forward. So I
- 59:37Speaker 4: think it is a little bit disappointing. It is a
- 59:39Speaker 4: little bit concerning, but you know, it's really going to
- 59:43Speaker 4: be interesting to see what he can do down the
- 59:45Speaker 4: stretch here because his bat and again he steals just
- 59:48Speaker 4: as many bases as straight turner. They had that little
- 59:50Speaker 4: competition earlier in the year where it was kind of
- 59:52Speaker 4: you know, who's who's going to steal more bases, So
- 59:55Speaker 4: him getting on bases is just as important, uh, you
- 59:58Speaker 4: know for the Phillies lineup. So that's something even if
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: it's if it's taking walks. But just I just want
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: to see from him better discipline at the plate and
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: just working better at best because that's what he does
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: right when he But I now on the converse side
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: of this, you know, after a season last year, pitchers
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: may have learned how to how to pitch him a
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: little bit. Now he has to make that adjustment. I
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: don't think I think it's too early to say that.
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: You know, he's he's a boss, or he's not going
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: to be good. I think he could just easily turn
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: the season around them by next season, take that major
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: step forward. You know, we kind of sell a boom right.
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: He's taking a major step forward this season.
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: So we got to be patient. We got to be
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: patient with him. That's what I think. You know a
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: lot of people are wanting to run him out of
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: town now now we got to be patient, Like you said,
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: Alec Boum and an amazing presence on this team. We're
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: going to get to him in just a second. But
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: which batter needs to step up? In your opinion here, like,
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: who do you think on this team from a batting
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: perspective really just needs to step up here, you know,
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: of the course the latter part of this August month
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: here and in September and October.
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: I think so obviously Stott is one of them, but
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: I think another guy and it seems like maybe he's
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: turned the corner a little bit. But JC, yeah, he
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: had he was really really he had a really good
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: season beginning of the season. You know, he missed time
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: getting hurt, and then when he came back to that
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: injury after the All Star break, he was a businal
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: watch for a long time. Yeah, he's finally starting to
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: get some some hits now and some of them have
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: been have been big ones. So he's the guy that
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: I'm really looking at to step up obviously, other than
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: you know that we talked about Bryce already in a
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: matter of time, I think for him, but I think,
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: you know, if you look at guys who have been underperforming,
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: the two guys that jump out familiar Scott and j T.
- 1:01:37Speaker 4: And j C has the experience. I think I felt
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: today he's the oldest position player the Phillies. On the
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: Phillies roster right now, so at least from the every
- 1:01:45Speaker 4: day guys. Yeah, so he has he knows what he's
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: got to do. But you know, age catches up to
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: a catcher, and I think we talked about this on
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: on one of our earlier shows, maybe even the preseason one,
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: but that might just be he's starting to get into
- 1:01:59Speaker 4: that decline and that's not through any fault of his own.
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: You know, he's a tremendous athlete, but that is a
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: lot awaar and there behind the plate.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: So absolutely all right, Well, to close us out here,
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: I do want to talk about Alec Bohm. He's been
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: the one guy on this team who has really provided
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: consistency across the board. We've talked about him a few
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: times a season here on this podcast podcast platform, and
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: I do wonder if he'll be seen as somewhat of
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: a you know, quote savior in a way for this
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: Phillies team when things were going wrong, when things were
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: not going well at all, when guys couldn't get on base.
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: Alec Boum again, that consistency that he has provided this
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: team here in twenty twenty four, I think should be
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: at one of the top storylines of the twenty twenty
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: four season here, How are you viewing Alec Bohm's role
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: here in twenty twenty four.
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: I think the word you said, consistency is kind of
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: what jumped out to me.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: Right. He has been the most consistent.
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: Hitter in this lineup, and it's kind of weird because
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: you know, he's a little bit older than Scott and
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: he's showing glimpse is at the plate, right but this
- 1:03:02Speaker 4: year he seems really kind of taking that step forward.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: He's a guy where right now.
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: I talked about Harper earlier, but I'm like, whenever bones up,
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: I'm like, he can make something happen right here. Yeah,
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: it may not likely won't be a home run. He's still,
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: you know, kind of is missing a little bit of.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: That power, but we don't need to see him hit home.
- 1:03:16Speaker 4: Runs, just driving the ball in the gap, and he's
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: been able to do that for the you know, the
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: better part of the season. So I think when you
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: look at the Phillies lineup and you're depending on how
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: far this team goes and how this season progresses, you
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: could look back at this and I'll be absolutely say
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: that Alec Bohm was a key part to getting this
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: team to wherever it.
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: Is that that they they get to. Hopefully.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: Absolutely, I don't mind seeing that small ball being played
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: every now and again. It's not it's not a terrible thing,
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: especially when certain key components of this team are struggling.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: So again, folks, Eric Morritelly, Buddy, it was great talking
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: to you that balls out of here dot com. Folks
