Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: It's media podcast. Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only
- 0:12Speaker 1: game show where conservation always wins. I'm your host, Spencer
- 0:16Speaker 1: new Arth, and today we're joined by Brody Henderson, Chester,
- 0:19Speaker 1: Floyd Hayden, samic Seth Morris, Randall Williams, Tresa Croker, and
- 0:24Speaker 1: Morgan Jacobson. Now Morgan is a special guest that's here
- 0:28Speaker 1: from the Montana FWP. Last year they reached down to
- 0:32Speaker 1: us and said they were holding a trivia contest of
- 0:34Speaker 1: their own and asked if the winner could compete against
- 0:38Speaker 1: our crew. Well, Morgan was the victor, and here he
- 0:41Speaker 1: sits today. Morgan, Welcome to the show. Tell us a
- 0:43Speaker 1: bit about yourself.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Hey, Spencer, I work for Montana fishwallaf and Parks here
- 0:48Speaker 2: in Bozeman. I do public communications and education, so our
- 0:53Speaker 2: Hunter Education program is something that I help with and
- 0:57Speaker 2: really just help out around the office in a lot
- 0:59Speaker 2: of other ways.
- 1:00Speaker 1: And how'd that game trivia go? I was told that
- 1:02Speaker 1: it was a nail bier of a competition.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Well, that's a funny question, because I'm pretty sure I
- 1:08Speaker 2: was the only one dumb enough not to lose on purpose.
- 1:11Speaker 1: And here I am. Really you think folks didn't want
- 1:14Speaker 1: to be here.
- 1:14Speaker 2: You know, I think I think it was. It was
- 1:18Speaker 2: all multiple choice, and I just gave it my best.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Everyone else just didn't want the attention.
- 1:23Speaker 3: I think, okay, a little bit of tanking Spencer. We're
- 1:26Speaker 3: gonna have questions that are nothing but hunting regulation.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Question No, not this time. Well he's not a law
- 1:31Speaker 1: enforcement or anything like that. But I actually have some
- 1:34Speaker 1: questions in front of me that were asked in that game.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I think we're going to test our crew to see
- 1:39Speaker 1: if they get any right now, the document that I have, Morgan,
- 1:42Speaker 1: everything was not multiple choice. So maybe these are familiar.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Maybe these didn't end up making the trivia game, but
- 1:47Speaker 1: here they are. This was question three. There were five
- 1:50Speaker 1: states east of the Mississippi River that have over one
- 1:53Speaker 1: million acres under conservation easements. Name one of them, Florida.
- 1:58Speaker 1: That's correct, that's one five statesiest Mississippi River. Hm hmm,
- 2:05Speaker 1: you're not even gonna guess.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Pennsylvania.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Pennsylvania is not one. Maine, that's another one. Hayden's two
- 2:12Speaker 1: for two over here, keep going on a heater, New York,
- 2:16Speaker 1: New York is well done.
- 2:18Speaker 5: Crew.
- 2:18Speaker 1: We got two left, Michigan. No, the other two are
- 2:23Speaker 1: Georgia and Virginia. Did you get that one right?
- 2:27Speaker 5: I think so.
- 2:27Speaker 1: I think I guess Florida. And this was question seven.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Name the two birds and one mammal that have been
- 2:34Speaker 1: removed from the endangered species list in our native to Montana.
- 2:40Speaker 5: Bald eagle.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Bald eagle is one.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Golden eagle?
- 2:45Speaker 1: No, uh, looking for another bird another mammal? Was this
- 2:50Speaker 1: question in the game, Morgan, this one Linx, No, no,
- 2:58Speaker 1: I'll tell them to you. The other one is pere
- 3:01Speaker 1: green falcon and gray wolf.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Come on, it's like and I didn't come up with
- 3:11Speaker 3: these questions, and it's.
- 3:15Speaker 1: What they have on their website. You're gonna have to
- 3:16Speaker 1: take it up with Morgan.
- 3:17Speaker 5: Don't give Brody any good tags this year.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Now, Morgan, based on our cruise performance, I think you'll
- 3:22Speaker 1: do okay today. Good luck. There's a lot of pressure
- 3:25Speaker 1: on you. You're carrying the weight of an entire States
- 3:28Speaker 1: game department on your shoulders.
- 3:30Speaker 2: That is not lost on me. Trust me.
- 3:33Speaker 1: And each week here on Trivia we reveal a new stat.
- 3:36Speaker 1: In a previous game, Steve suggested that the more players
- 3:39Speaker 1: in the room, the higher the winning score. That's a
- 3:42Speaker 1: logical hypothesis, but the data doesn't agree. For games where
- 3:46Speaker 1: we have six players, the average winning score is seven.
- 3:50Speaker 1: For games where we have seven players, the average is
- 3:53Speaker 1: seven point three. For games with eight players, the average
- 3:57Speaker 1: is seven point three, and for game with nine players,
- 4:01Speaker 1: the average is amazingly seven point three. That means there
- 4:05Speaker 1: is only a point three difference in winning scores between
- 4:08Speaker 1: games with six players versus nine players, in that games
- 4:11Speaker 1: with seven, eight, or nine competitors have the exact same average.
- 4:16Speaker 1: What do you think of that randall that check out?
- 4:19Speaker 5: Fascinating?
- 4:20Speaker 3: Okay, it is a fascinating That means nothing.
- 4:25Speaker 1: And here's our zero percenter question of the week, which
- 4:27Speaker 1: tests how much information players have retained from previous games.
- 4:32Speaker 1: This question was from episode three forty seven. The topic
- 4:35Speaker 1: was wildlife and nobody got it right. Name one of
- 4:39Speaker 1: the four states with the black bear as their official
- 4:42Speaker 1: state mammal. Go ahead, throw out some guesses. What do
- 4:45Speaker 1: you got ed question?
- 4:47Speaker 3: Read it again.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Name one of the four states with the black bear
- 4:51Speaker 1: as their official state mammal, New Mexico. No, No to
- 4:57Speaker 1: both of those. Excuse me, New Mexico is one of
- 4:59Speaker 1: them four.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Give you more guessings.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Got to be in the Eastern.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Parkansas, North Carolina, No, No, South Carolina, Maine, Ji York, Georgia, Florida.
- 5:10Speaker 6: No.
- 5:10Speaker 5: Here are the.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Other ones that you're missing, Alabama, Louisiana, and West Virginia.
- 5:15Speaker 1: The incorrect answers given were Maine, Kentucky, Wyoming, North Carolina, Vermont, Pennsylvania,
- 5:21Speaker 1: and Oregon. So you guys covered the map, but nobody
- 5:23Speaker 1: got it right.
- 5:24Speaker 5: Oh I got it right, I said, New Mexico.
- 5:27Speaker 1: We have some housekeeping to get to. In a previous
- 5:29Speaker 1: game of trivia, we had a question about dol Bear's law,
- 5:33Speaker 1: which is when you use cricket chirps to measure air temperature.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Listener Bob Davis wrote in to say that he proudly
- 5:40Speaker 1: got this question right thanks to his grandfather. Here's why.
- 5:44Speaker 1: His granddad kept a daily journal, which Bob read after
- 5:47Speaker 1: he passed away. This is his grandpa's memorable entry from
- 5:52Speaker 1: September eleventh, two thousand and one. Four passenger aircrafts hijacked.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Two hit towers in New York City, one hit Pentagon,
- 6:01Speaker 1: one crash in Pennsylvania. I was in doctor Denlinger's office
- 6:05Speaker 1: with a scope up my butt when it happened. Also,
- 6:08Speaker 1: you can learn tent by crickets. Count the number of
- 6:10Speaker 1: chirps in fifteen seconds at thirty seven, and you have
- 6:13Speaker 1: temp in fahrenheit. What do you think of that?
- 6:16Speaker 5: That is quite a distillation of that day man, that's
- 6:20Speaker 5: good note keeping.
- 6:21Speaker 7: Strange conglomeration, yeah, d that someone better make a book
- 6:27Speaker 7: out of his vental something that reads like a shock response,
- 6:30Speaker 7: like you know when somebody's like so shocked by something
- 6:33Speaker 7: awful that they like kind of just deflect to something
- 6:36Speaker 7: totally oblique and unrelated and like strange.
- 6:40Speaker 1: It's a good amount of information for September eleventh, two
- 6:43Speaker 1: thousand and one. So good on Bob's granddad for passing
- 6:46Speaker 1: down that bit of wisdom, and good on Bob for
- 6:48Speaker 1: retaining it. Now the Shelby indexpert. Today's game of trivia
- 6:52Speaker 1: is a four and a half, so our winner should
- 6:54Speaker 1: get nine correct answers, and with that we're onto the
- 6:57Speaker 1: game play the drop Phil.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Look, I need to know what I stand to win everything?
- 7:06Speaker 1: How's that?
- 7:07Speaker 5: Just tend to win everything? Demon Suckers?
- 7:18Speaker 1: Question one. The topic is foraging, and as always, this
- 7:20Speaker 1: will be multiple choice. Which of these fruits is not
- 7:25Speaker 1: native to the United States? Is it mangoes, choke, cherries,
- 7:31Speaker 1: plums or blueberries. Which of these fruits is not native
- 7:37Speaker 1: to the United States? Mangoes, choke cherries, plums, or blueberries.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Morgan with the quickest answer in the room, Randall, do
- 7:47Speaker 1: you think you know this one?
- 7:49Speaker 3: I don't know much about fruits or vegetables or.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Anything like that. Mangoes, choke cherries, plums, or blueberries. He's
- 7:54Speaker 1: more of a hot dog guy. Indeed, Which of those
- 7:59Speaker 1: is no not native to the United States? Does everybody
- 8:03Speaker 1: have an answer?
- 8:04Speaker 3: I hate it when I feel like I'm being set
- 8:06Speaker 3: up with these multiple questions, multiple choice things.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Hayden changing something. Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal
- 8:13Speaker 1: your answers. We have Morgan sang mangoes, Hayden saying plums,
- 8:18Speaker 1: Brody sang mangoes, Tresa saying choke cherries, Seth and Randall
- 8:23Speaker 1: and Chester all saying mangoes. They got it. The correct
- 8:27Speaker 1: answer is mangoes. The choke cherry native range extends from
- 8:31Speaker 1: the Great Plains to the East coast, the plumb native
- 8:35Speaker 1: range extends from the Rocky Mountains to the East coast,
- 8:38Speaker 1: and the blueberry native range is nearly the entire continent
- 8:41Speaker 1: of North America. Mangoes are native to India, although they
- 8:45Speaker 1: are commercially grown in states like Florida and Hawaii.
- 8:48Speaker 3: You know who liked eating plums out here, Montana back
- 8:51Speaker 3: in the day, Mountain Menton. Yeah, love them.
- 8:55Speaker 1: American plums are very satisfying. I feel like scouting for
- 8:57Speaker 1: deer in August. Come across those bushes, big fan.
- 9:01Speaker 5: You're never trying to trick us.
- 9:04Speaker 6: Thought I was mango cilantro rice the other day.
- 9:09Speaker 1: So good, good on Chester. Question two, that topic is biology.
- 9:15Speaker 1: This next great question comes to his via Weston Basso.
- 9:18Speaker 1: If you have a question you think is right for
- 9:20Speaker 1: meat Eater Trivia, you can send it to trivia at
- 9:22Speaker 1: the medeater dot com. What is the name for the
- 9:25Speaker 1: partially digested food that dear regurgitate for further chewing? Quick
- 9:33Speaker 1: answers from the entire room. This maybe one of those
- 9:36Speaker 1: seven percenters that everybody gets right. Again, The question is,
- 9:39Speaker 1: what is the name for the partially digested food that
- 9:43Speaker 1: dear regurgitate for further chewing? Tresta, are you gonna get
- 9:49Speaker 1: this one? Everyone else looks confident, though trusted. Do you
- 9:58Speaker 1: think you'll come up with an answer?
- 10:00Speaker 4: No?
- 10:00Speaker 1: Okay, everybody else is ready. Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 10:06Speaker 1: We have Morgan, Hayden and Brody saying cud Seth saying
- 10:10Speaker 1: cud Randall saying rumen chest you're saying cud tresta without
- 10:14Speaker 1: an answer. The correct answer is cud Randall.
- 10:18Speaker 3: I overthought it.
- 10:19Speaker 1: You did. This process is called rumination and it's practiced
- 10:23Speaker 1: by fellow ruminants like cattle, sheep, giraffes, gazelles, and antelope.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Some sources say the reason for this adaptation is to
- 10:32Speaker 1: allow ruminants to spend less time leisure eating. Instead, they
- 10:37Speaker 1: can quickly swallow their food and the embed in a
- 10:39Speaker 1: safe location to digest while they watch for predators.
- 10:43Speaker 3: It's a real good time to stock a mule, dear
- 10:46Speaker 3: when they're laying.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Said your answer Randall three times when describing the real answer.
- 10:58Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 10:59Speaker 8: Maybe it's an alternative.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Well, I think I think a rooman is like their
- 11:03Speaker 1: stomach ruminants, but it's not.
- 11:05Speaker 8: The food, the contents of the room.
- 11:09Speaker 1: And they'll do some googling playing here like cottonlites. It's
- 11:14Speaker 1: poop their corporate phra. That is a trivia question. Before
- 11:20Speaker 1: we had Giannis vehemently trying to argue that it was
- 11:23Speaker 1: your own poop and any answer that didn't say your
- 11:28Speaker 1: what inside with him? Question three? The topic is public lands?
- 11:33Speaker 1: What state is home to public lands like Capitol Reef
- 11:37Speaker 1: National Park and Dixie National Forest? What state is home
- 11:44Speaker 1: to public lands like Capitol Reef National Park and Dixie
- 11:49Speaker 1: National Forest? A few quick answers in the room, some
- 11:55Speaker 1: non answers. Chester, it's not come up with anything quite yet. Seth,
- 12:00Speaker 1: you're gonna get this one.
- 12:02Speaker 5: I don't think so.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Spencer again, What state is home to Capitol Reef National
- 12:06Speaker 1: Park and Dixie National Forest? Hayden also slow to an answer. Hayden,
- 12:11Speaker 1: you're gonna get this one.
- 12:12Speaker 5: Why the mango things still bugging me?
- 12:14Speaker 3: Okay?
- 12:16Speaker 5: No, I'm not gonna get this answer.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Also, Brody looks perplexed. Brode, are you trying to trick us?
- 12:22Speaker 1: Or do you know this just thinking?
- 12:24Speaker 3: Okay, let me know when I got to write something down?
- 12:27Speaker 1: Topic is public lands? What state is home to public
- 12:30Speaker 1: lands like Capitol Reef National Park and Dixie National Forest?
- 12:37Speaker 5: Brodie, are we at the point you'd start her asking
- 12:39Speaker 5: me for taking too long?
- 12:41Speaker 3: Has everyone got an answer?
- 12:42Speaker 4: No, I'm changing mind?
- 12:43Speaker 1: Okay, Chester, How do you feel about your answer Ah
- 12:49Speaker 1: not great. Okay, how about you Randall. Randall, you were
- 12:52Speaker 1: one of the quicker answers in the room.
- 12:55Speaker 3: I feel pretty good about it.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Poor Brody.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Alright, I give up.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Everybody ready, go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 13:07Speaker 1: Morgan saying Utah. Hayden sang Florida, Brody sang Alabama, Trestas
- 13:13Speaker 1: saying Florida, Seth saying South Carolina, Randall sang Utah, Chester
- 13:19Speaker 1: saying Kentucky. We have a correct answer in the room.
- 13:22Speaker 1: It's Utah.
- 13:24Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that's that's what I did.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Capitol Reef National Park is named after the sandstone cliffs
- 13:33Speaker 1: and dome formations. The Capitol Park comes from the white
- 13:36Speaker 1: domes that are reminiscent of Capitol buildings, and the reef
- 13:40Speaker 1: part comes from the rocky barrier that impedes travel, just
- 13:43Speaker 1: like in Ocean's Reef. Now, that was a bone for
- 13:46Speaker 1: our guest, Randall, who used to work for the Utah
- 13:49Speaker 1: Game Department. Randall, I'm sorry, not for Randall, for Morgan.
- 13:53Speaker 5: Yeah, it was a bone for me too.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Why is that because I got it right now? Morgan.
- 13:59Speaker 4: Uh.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Some of our competitors were asking who was coming from
- 14:02Speaker 1: f WP to play today, and I did not tell
- 14:04Speaker 1: them because I worried that Hayden would get on your
- 14:08Speaker 1: LinkedIn page find that you used to work for Utah
- 14:12Speaker 1: and then uh slowly researched things about Utah and Montana.
- 14:17Speaker 1: He's going to show up with an advantage.
- 14:19Speaker 9: Oh wow, a clue on my on my jacket.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Here, so that that was your bone, Morgan, did you
- 14:27Speaker 1: get it right? It's tricksie. Capitol Reef makes you think
- 14:34Speaker 1: it's going to be an ocean uh, and then the
- 14:37Speaker 1: the Dixie makes you think it's gonna be in the South.
- 14:39Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 14:39Speaker 9: I went for ocean state in the South right there.
- 14:42Speaker 9: And you made a lot of sense to me.
- 14:45Speaker 5: A perfect game.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Question four, the topic is fishing. Name two of the
- 14:52Speaker 1: four species that the USGS refers to as quote Asian carp.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Name two of the four species that the USGS refers
- 15:05Speaker 1: to as Asian carp. Brody with a very confident answer,
- 15:12Speaker 1: feeling this, Hayden Seth looking as well. The rest of
- 15:16Speaker 1: the room not so much.
- 15:18Speaker 4: No, I'm part of them, not so much.
- 15:20Speaker 6: Okay, chacking myself here, I can't two of the four
- 15:24Speaker 6: species that the us do you get it.
- 15:27Speaker 1: As Asian carp Man Brody's pulling for you, Chester. Oh no, Brody,
- 15:37Speaker 1: if you had to, could you name all four?
- 15:39Speaker 3: Are you named three? I think?
- 15:41Speaker 1: Okay?
- 15:43Speaker 3: Actually you could pass one of them too? You actually, yeah,
- 15:47Speaker 3: I think it could.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Okay, Chester, Do you think you have one?
- 15:52Speaker 6: I mean, if it's four species, yes, I think I
- 15:55Speaker 6: have one.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Seth Do you think you have one of them? I
- 15:58Speaker 1: need you to name two?
- 16:00Speaker 6: Oh my gosh, trying to think of the name for
- 16:03Speaker 6: the one.
- 16:03Speaker 1: That I don't help about the room here, Chester, it's
- 16:07Speaker 1: a competitive game. Yeah, that wasn't okay, Morgan, how you
- 16:10Speaker 1: doing over here? Not the question?
- 16:12Speaker 3: One of my answers?
- 16:13Speaker 2: That is where I lose my wading streak.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Okay, fishing? Would that be the one of the holes
- 16:17Speaker 1: in your game?
- 16:18Speaker 2: I would say fishing and probably Woodsman.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Chap Brody, how we doing over there? I think everyone
- 16:26Speaker 1: else is ready. I'm gonna leave it is everybody.
- 16:28Speaker 3: I get it wrong because I didn't change it.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Morgan saying
- 16:33Speaker 1: common carp, Hayden saying now what grass carp and mirror
- 16:38Speaker 1: carp he crossed out, Koy, Brody sang silver and big
- 16:42Speaker 1: guy trust it without an answer. Seth saying common and grass,
- 16:46Speaker 1: Randall's saying grass and koy chest You're saying buffalo and grass.
- 16:52Speaker 1: The four species of Asian carp are silver, big head, black,
- 16:57Speaker 1: and grass. I don't know if everybody got it right.
- 17:02Speaker 1: People flirted with the right answer silver, nobody quite got there.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Most Asian carp species were introduced to the United States
- 17:10Speaker 1: in the nineteen seventies. They were brought here to control
- 17:13Speaker 1: LG and weed growth in controlled environments like sewage ponds
- 17:17Speaker 1: and aqua farms, but escaped not long after. They're one
- 17:21Speaker 1: of the greatest threats to native fish, with Vice News
- 17:24Speaker 1: declaring them quote America's most hated fish.
- 17:27Speaker 3: Dude, you can't be on your phone like ches.
- 17:30Speaker 1: I'm not.
- 17:31Speaker 6: I'm just Google.
- 17:32Speaker 3: I'm talking.
- 17:33Speaker 1: What are we looking up over here?
- 17:35Speaker 5: Looking on.
- 17:39Speaker 4: Carp?
- 17:39Speaker 1: I believe is a deformed common carp and common carper
- 17:43Speaker 1: from Europe as the USGS would define them.
- 17:45Speaker 6: I was looking at another name for buffalo, but it's
- 17:48Speaker 6: not Buffalo.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Would be like saying bass Chester.
- 17:51Speaker 5: That mirror carp are from Central Asia.
- 17:56Speaker 1: According to Wikipedia, Hey, we're going by what the USGS
- 17:59Speaker 1: most federaled part.
- 18:00Speaker 5: That's all.
- 18:01Speaker 3: That's a well crafted question there.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Asian carp Thank you Randall. Question five. The topic is wildlife.
- 18:07Speaker 1: This is our listener question of the week, which was
- 18:09Speaker 1: won by Caroline Perchner for sending this great question. Caroline
- 18:13Speaker 1: is going to get a book signed by Steve. This
- 18:17Speaker 1: series about North American wildlife was hosted by Marty Staffer
- 18:22Speaker 1: and made its first PBS appearance in nineteen eighty two.
- 18:29Speaker 1: And the topic is wildlife. This series about North American
- 18:33Speaker 1: wildlife was hosted by Marty Staffer and made its first
- 18:37Speaker 1: PBS appearance in nineteen eighty two. Who and here was
- 18:42Speaker 1: alive in nineteen eighty two? Just Brody, I think.
- 18:44Speaker 3: Jesus not No, that can't be true.
- 18:47Speaker 6: I wonder why he wins all the time? Ten more
- 18:50Speaker 6: years of knowledge?
- 18:51Speaker 3: Eighty two?
- 18:51Speaker 1: And are you gonna get this one right? Brody?
- 18:55Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Okay, you were sophomore in high school?
- 18:58Speaker 3: Then, oh I's already graduated. That's just ten years old.
- 19:05Speaker 5: Again.
- 19:05Speaker 1: This is our listener question of the week. This series
- 19:08Speaker 1: about North American wildlife was hosted by Marty Staffer and
- 19:12Speaker 1: made its first PBS appearance in nineteen eighty two. Randall
- 19:16Speaker 1: with a quick answer, Randall Are you going to get
- 19:18Speaker 1: this one?
- 19:20Speaker 3: I narrowed it down to a couple of possibilities.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Rest of the room looks stumped. I think Brody may
- 19:27Speaker 1: have it. Okay, Brody and Randall might have a chance. Morgan,
- 19:31Speaker 1: how you gonna do on this one?
- 19:33Speaker 2: It's a wild guess?
- 19:34Speaker 1: Okay, Seth, you ready go ahead and reveal your answers?
- 19:38Speaker 1: We have? Morgan sang mutual of Omaha. Hayden sang Wild Planet,
- 19:43Speaker 1: Brody sang Wild America. Tresa sang This American Life. Seth
- 19:49Speaker 1: sang Wild America, Randall sang Wild America. Chess're sang Wild America.
- 19:55Speaker 1: The correct answer is Wild America. The room did pretty well.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Are we boring you? Hayden?
- 20:03Speaker 1: What are we doing on your phone now? Hayden?
- 20:04Speaker 5: I'm getting an im poortant work email and it's hilarious,
- 20:06Speaker 5: but I'll have to share it with you afterwards.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Okay. Wild America is considered to be one of PBS's
- 20:12Speaker 1: most successful shows of all time. It was about North
- 20:16Speaker 1: America's wild places and wild animals. Its style of nature
- 20:20Speaker 1: documentary inspired many others like it, which actually caused Marty
- 20:24Speaker 1: Staffer to sue National Geographic in twenty eighteen, a judge
- 20:28Speaker 1: dismissed that trademark claim two years later, siding with net
- 20:32Speaker 1: geo Phil. We are halfway through our game of trivia.
- 20:35Speaker 1: I think we have a good game. Give us a
- 20:37Speaker 1: scoreboard update.
- 20:38Speaker 10: Yeah, the last question made it interesting. We got Tresa
- 20:41Speaker 10: zero points yet to make it on the board. Hayden's
- 20:44Speaker 10: coming up next with one point. We have a five
- 20:47Speaker 10: way tie for first place currently with every seth Randall, Morgan, Chester,
- 20:51Speaker 10: and Brody. I'll have three points.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Okay, but a good game. Question six, The topic is hunting.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Hayden's still on his phone over here. Sorry, you can't
- 21:11Speaker 1: even get halfway through.
- 21:12Speaker 5: I don't mean, I don't mean to.
- 21:13Speaker 9: I'm losing, probably on Twitter or something.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Ducks Unlimited refers to this stretch of land from Iowa
- 21:20Speaker 1: to British Columbia as quote America's Duck Factory. Again, the
- 21:27Speaker 1: topic is hunting. Ducks Unlimited refers to this stretch of
- 21:31Speaker 1: land from Iowa to British Columbia as quote America's duck Factory.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Quick answers from Hayden, Brody, Randall. Rest of the room
- 21:42Speaker 1: looks stumped. Randall looks excited. Mike pull him ahead of
- 21:47Speaker 1: the pack. How do you feel about this one?
- 21:50Speaker 2: Morgan, you know, ducks are another one of my weaknesses.
- 21:54Speaker 2: You're just hitting all of them.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Today started off strong, though. Does everybody else have an answer?
- 22:02Speaker 9: Seth trisa I do, but Man, for some reason, I'm
- 22:06Speaker 9: not feeling good.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Brody, are you ready?
- 22:08Speaker 3: I'm ready.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 22:11Speaker 5: We have.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Morgan sang Central Flyway. Hayden sang pothole region, Brody sang
- 22:17Speaker 1: Prairie pothole region, Trista sang the Flyway, Seth saying pothole region,
- 22:22Speaker 1: Randall sang prairie pothole region, Chester saying pothole country. The
- 22:28Speaker 1: correct answer is prairie pothole region. I think if you
- 22:33Speaker 1: said pothole region, let me I was gonna say, I
- 22:39Speaker 1: don't think that's right.
- 22:40Speaker 8: I've never heard it as just pothole.
- 22:43Speaker 1: I think if you said, just very important about that distinction,
- 22:49Speaker 1: so pothole country is a no. I don't think pothole
- 22:54Speaker 1: is not good enough.
- 22:59Speaker 6: What I was I was even writing down region, and
- 23:02Speaker 6: I was like, I don't know if that matters, So
- 23:04Speaker 6: I wrote down country.
- 23:06Speaker 1: The country part isn't the one I'm concerned about. Chasteriars
- 23:08Speaker 1: that you didn't put prairie in.
- 23:09Speaker 3: What does Ducks Unlimited call it?
- 23:11Speaker 1: They call it the PPR, which is prairie pothole rewords
- 23:15Speaker 1: say anytime they talk about it, it's almost exclusively PPR.
- 23:18Speaker 1: They'll spell it out the first time and then each
- 23:21Speaker 1: time after that.
- 23:21Speaker 9: But there is there is no other pothole region.
- 23:24Speaker 4: So it's like, if you say pothole region, you're only
- 23:26Speaker 4: you're only speaking to one thing.
- 23:29Speaker 5: That is very true, particularly in the context dooks.
- 23:31Speaker 1: I don't think we're going to get Phil. Phil is
- 23:34Speaker 1: shaking his head too.
- 23:35Speaker 5: Is this one of those things we can call Doug
- 23:36Speaker 5: during about?
- 23:38Speaker 1: All right, we're not getting there. We're not gonna call
- 23:41Speaker 1: Doug Quay yet hating on his phone again. Are you
- 23:43Speaker 1: dialing up Doug?
- 23:43Speaker 5: No, I'm looking pothole region.
- 23:45Speaker 8: Okay, you you let us know if you type it
- 23:47Speaker 8: in there, it fills in Prairie pothole region.
- 23:49Speaker 1: That's not how Question seven The topic is fishing. I'm
- 23:56Speaker 1: sorry I needed to read the factoid first about the
- 23:58Speaker 1: prairie pothole region. Some say that the Prairie Pothole region
- 24:02Speaker 1: produces more ducks than any other place in North America.
- 24:06Speaker 1: It's estimated that seventy percent of this habitat has been
- 24:09Speaker 1: lost to agriculture and development, with only twenty two million
- 24:13Speaker 1: acres of native grassland left. Ducks Unlimited has declared it
- 24:16Speaker 1: the most important waterfowl habitat on the continent.
- 24:20Speaker 3: I would never have guessed that British Columbia would be
- 24:23Speaker 3: The border.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Goes all the way over there. Some of it touches Montana.
- 24:26Speaker 1: It's the places you'd expect Minnesota, Iowa, the Dakotas. I
- 24:29Speaker 1: think Nebraska might be in there. Alberta gets all the
- 24:32Speaker 1: way to BC.
- 24:34Speaker 6: It kind of follows. It seems like it kind of
- 24:36Speaker 6: follows that like Montana north.
- 24:38Speaker 1: To follows the prairie region.
- 24:39Speaker 6: And then once you get up in the well, just
- 24:41Speaker 6: if you look at the potholes, you know, uh huh,
- 24:43Speaker 6: never mind, I'm thinking out loud again. It doesn't matter.
- 24:47Speaker 4: Sure, it follows all the pothole the potholes, you know,
- 24:50Speaker 4: region in the prairie country.
- 24:51Speaker 1: I think it was in the country.
- 24:54Speaker 5: I will point out that after a very conclusive Google searches,
- 24:57Speaker 5: indeed the prairie pothole.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Thanks you, Hayden had a lot on the line there.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Question seven the topic is fishing. When Berkeley introduced this
- 25:08Speaker 1: line of scented baits in two thousand and two, they
- 25:11Speaker 1: were so excited that they put an exclamation point in
- 25:13Speaker 1: its name.
- 25:16Speaker 3: What is it?
- 25:17Speaker 9: So you're asking?
- 25:18Speaker 1: Here's the question again. When Berkeley introduced this line of
- 25:23Speaker 1: scented baits in two thousand and two, they were so
- 25:27Speaker 1: excited that they put an exclamation point in its name.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Thank you, Phil. Does that help you? Seth? You're going
- 25:33Speaker 1: to come up with what I'm looking for?
- 25:35Speaker 5: Oh? Yeah, I got it.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Okay, I got it. Very confident. Room here.
- 25:39Speaker 3: Those Walleye boys know what this stuff is.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Dies. Everybody have an answer? Tresa, you guys, use you
- 25:47Speaker 1: threw me a fly fishing question? Sorry I got it Wronggan,
- 25:51Speaker 1: do you have an answer?
- 25:53Speaker 5: Does Walmart sell this product?
- 25:54Speaker 1: I'm not going to give you any hints. Is everybody ready?
- 25:58Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Morgan and
- 26:02Speaker 1: Hayden and Brody saying gulp, trust it without an answer,
- 26:06Speaker 1: Seth Randall Chester saying gulp, they got it. The correct
- 26:10Speaker 1: answer is golf. Berkeley declared Gulp the most significant advancement
- 26:16Speaker 1: in soft bait technology of all time. They wanted to
- 26:19Speaker 1: create a soft bodied bait that was digestible for animals
- 26:22Speaker 1: and degradable in water. They also aim to make it
- 26:26Speaker 1: taste delicious to fish, claiming golf products release a scent
- 26:29Speaker 1: that's four hundred times greater than traditional plastic lures. Did
- 26:33Speaker 1: you boys use some of that on the Montana Walleye Tour?
- 26:36Speaker 3: I did, yes, a little bit.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Yeah, how'd that work for you?
- 26:40Speaker 4: Uh?
- 26:41Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 26:42Speaker 1: We don't work with them. You can be honest if
- 26:43Speaker 1: it didn't work at all.
- 26:44Speaker 6: I love I love fishing with golf, but I don't
- 26:49Speaker 6: think we caught any fish on it.
- 26:50Speaker 7: Really.
- 26:51Speaker 9: The one thing I don't like about them is if
- 26:52Speaker 9: you leave those things on your hook, and.
- 26:55Speaker 3: You might as well just throw the whole.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Storm in a dark place in their package.
- 27:00Speaker 3: Do you know what?
- 27:00Speaker 5: You know?
- 27:00Speaker 3: What's great when you're bottom bouncing with the spinner rig?
- 27:04Speaker 3: Those Galt nightcrawlers are better because the little perchs don't
- 27:08Speaker 3: he's a real worm? Oh yeah.
- 27:11Speaker 1: Their terribility is somewhere between like a real worm and
- 27:14Speaker 1: a very fake one. But they still have a tendency
- 27:17Speaker 1: to get chewed up real easy. Question eight. The topic
- 27:21Speaker 1: is gear. We'll get a scoreboard update from Phil after this.
- 27:24Speaker 1: This next great question comes to us via Darryl Taylor.
- 27:27Speaker 1: If you have a question you think is right for
- 27:29Speaker 1: med Eater Trivia, you can send it to trivia to
- 27:31Speaker 1: Medeater dot com. Mauser, who is famous for their bolt
- 27:35Speaker 1: action rifles, is headquartered in what country? Mauser? I'll spell
- 27:43Speaker 1: that for you. M A U. S. E. R. Who
- 27:47Speaker 1: is famous for their bolt action rifles, is headquartered in
- 27:51Speaker 1: what country? Hayden with a quick answer. The rest of
- 27:55Speaker 1: the room is filing in, but they don't look as confident.
- 28:01Speaker 5: Again.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Topic is Gear Mouser, who is famous for their both
- 28:04Speaker 1: action rifles, is headquartered in what country? Brody looks stumped
- 28:10Speaker 1: or torn? I can't tell. How's it going over there?
- 28:12Speaker 2: Brody sounds like it's going okay.
- 28:19Speaker 1: That's your answer, Morgan, do you regret winning the trivia
- 28:22Speaker 1: competition yet and being here?
- 28:25Speaker 2: I'm I'm having a great time, but as very nervous
- 28:29Speaker 2: when I won that trivia career right away?
- 28:31Speaker 9: Morgan, was that the only thing that you wanted? Was
- 28:33Speaker 9: there any Was there a prize or no?
- 28:36Speaker 4: Just I don't know, but like did you I don't know.
- 28:45Speaker 5: Something?
- 28:45Speaker 9: I know it was nothing like that.
- 28:46Speaker 2: I've wondered if there was like a side bet going
- 28:49Speaker 2: on between Spencer and Greg Lemon who works for WP,
- 28:53Speaker 2: And I told Greg, if there is, then I need
- 28:56Speaker 2: a part of it.
- 28:57Speaker 1: So huh now the version I say, while there were
- 29:00Speaker 1: eleven questions with a tiebreaker, do you know how many
- 29:02Speaker 1: you got? Right to be here?
- 29:04Speaker 3: I don't remember?
- 29:04Speaker 1: Okay? Do you think it went to the tiebreaker? Did
- 29:06Speaker 1: it go that far? No? Okay? Does everyone have an
- 29:09Speaker 1: answer for the question about where Mauser is headquartered? Go
- 29:15Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Morgan saying Italy,
- 29:19Speaker 1: Hayden sang Germany, Brody sang Germany, Tressa sang Poland, Seth
- 29:26Speaker 1: and Randall, and Chester saying Germany. The correct answer is Germany.
- 29:32Speaker 1: The room did pretty well. Mauser is famous for the
- 29:37Speaker 1: M nine eight, which is considered one of the most
- 29:39Speaker 1: important guns of all time. The bolt action design had
- 29:42Speaker 1: a slower firing rate than most lever action guns, but
- 29:46Speaker 1: it could handle faster bullets and provide more accuracy. This
- 29:49Speaker 1: successful design made it one of the most copied guns
- 29:53Speaker 1: in the world. Phil we have two questions left. Give
- 29:57Speaker 1: us a scoreboard update.
- 30:00Speaker 5: Sure thing.
- 30:01Speaker 10: Hayden and Tresa are no longer in the running for
- 30:04Speaker 10: the win. However, we have Morgan with four points, Seth
- 30:11Speaker 10: and Chester with five, and Brodian Randall are tied up
- 30:14Speaker 10: in first place with six points apiece.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Okay, I was expecting a little better. I thought we'd
- 30:19Speaker 1: have a few folks in that nine range today, but
- 30:21Speaker 1: we're not going to hit the Shelby index. Question nine.
- 30:25Speaker 1: The topic is cooking. According to the USDA, this state
- 30:31Speaker 1: grows the most lettuce, onions, and bell peppers in America.
- 30:40Speaker 1: According to the USDA, this state grows the most lettuce,
- 30:44Speaker 1: the most onions, and the most bell peppers in America.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Hayden with the quickest excuse me, Randall with the quickest answer, Right, Randall,
- 30:53Speaker 1: you're gonna get this one.
- 30:54Speaker 8: Told you I don't know nothing about fruits or vegetables.
- 30:56Speaker 1: So again, according the USDA, this state grows the most lettuce, onions,
- 31:03Speaker 1: and bell peppers in America. A stumped room, Chester has
- 31:08Speaker 1: even picked up his board.
- 31:11Speaker 6: Pick it up right now, and I'm gonna write down
- 31:14Speaker 6: and answer.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Brody, you have it narrowed down.
- 31:17Speaker 3: You think I've got my answer, but you know I'm
- 31:20Speaker 3: a little un hot happy with this question.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Okay, what don't you like about it? Well that you
- 31:25Speaker 1: don't know it or you think there's like a fly.
- 31:27Speaker 3: Seems like it'd be one on a podcast that vegetarians
- 31:30Speaker 3: listening to.
- 31:32Speaker 1: Like Randal over here, Hot guy.
- 31:37Speaker 5: Again.
- 31:37Speaker 1: This state grows the most lettuce, onions, and bell peppers
- 31:41Speaker 1: in America. Does everybody have an answer? Chester?
- 31:47Speaker 3: Yes?
- 31:48Speaker 1: Tresa, go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Morgan
- 31:52Speaker 1: saying Iowa, Hayden saying California, Brody and Tresa and Seth
- 31:57Speaker 1: and Randall and Chester all saying California. They got it.
- 32:02Speaker 1: The correct answer is California. California is also the nation's
- 32:06Speaker 1: top producer of almonds, grapes, and strawberries. The state produces
- 32:11Speaker 1: forty two percent of America's vegetables, with four of the
- 32:15Speaker 1: top five produce growing counties located there. It's estimated that
- 32:19Speaker 1: about one point two million acres of California are solely
- 32:23Speaker 1: dedicated to growing vegetables. Phil How does that change the leaderboard?
- 32:28Speaker 10: So Morgan's no longer in the running, but we've got
- 32:30Speaker 10: Seth and Chester with six, and Randall and Brodi with seven.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Coming down to the final question, question ten, the topic
- 32:38Speaker 1: is hunting. This next great question comes to us via
- 32:41Speaker 1: John Ray. If you have a question you think is
- 32:43Speaker 1: right for meat Eatter Trivia, you can send it to
- 32:44Speaker 1: trivia to medeater dot com. In twenty ten, Missouri became
- 32:50Speaker 1: one of the only states in America to allow the
- 32:53Speaker 1: use of this very primitive weapon for deer hunting. In
- 33:00Speaker 1: twenty ten, Missouri became one of the only states in
- 33:03Speaker 1: America to allow the use of this very primitive weapon
- 33:08Speaker 1: for deer hunting. If Randall and Brody both get it right,
- 33:11Speaker 1: we will go to a tie breaker. They both get
- 33:13Speaker 1: it wrong, and we have Seth or Chester get it right,
- 33:16Speaker 1: we'll go to a four way tie breaker potentially. Brody,
- 33:19Speaker 1: do you have this one?
- 33:21Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure Randall, I'm pretty sure.
- 33:24Speaker 1: I got you. Guys are slamming the door on Chester
- 33:26Speaker 1: and Seth. You're not gonna let them in?
- 33:28Speaker 9: I hope.
- 33:28Speaker 1: So, okay, I.
- 33:29Speaker 6: Mean, I think it's like if I'm almost positive I
- 33:33Speaker 6: have it, there's one other thing creeping in my mind
- 33:35Speaker 6: that that might be.
- 33:36Speaker 1: But it's everybody ready, Tresa, go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 33:43Speaker 1: We have Morgan and Hayden and Brody saying had a
- 33:46Speaker 1: laddle Tresta's saying flint lock with a lot of cod
- 33:55Speaker 1: Randall Child, the correct answer is add a laddle. Brody
- 34:03Speaker 1: and Randall both get it right. They have eight correct answers,
- 34:07Speaker 1: and with that we are going to a tiebreaker. Play
- 34:09Speaker 1: the drop, Phil, Tye, is this the first? I? They
- 34:16Speaker 1: just cut it at if you ain't first your last,
- 34:18Speaker 1: and then like going to other stuff.
- 34:20Speaker 5: It's funny. I never liked it a Phil cough Man.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Now, Alabama and Nebraska also allow the use of adda
- 34:29Speaker 1: laddles for deer. Some states like Texas and Nevada allow
- 34:33Speaker 1: them to be used for non game species like coyotes
- 34:36Speaker 1: and faral hogs. And in twenty fifteen, one Missouri hunter
- 34:39Speaker 1: made national news when he killed a fifteen point whitetail
- 34:42Speaker 1: that scored one hundred and sixty nine inches with an
- 34:45Speaker 1: add a laddle.
- 34:47Speaker 5: Wow.
- 34:47Speaker 1: For the tie breaking round, the topic is public lands.
- 34:52Speaker 1: What year did Mount Saint Helen's erupt? Brody with a
- 34:57Speaker 1: quick answer, almost as though he knows it. Here's the
- 35:00Speaker 1: question again, what year did Mount Saint Helens erupt? The
- 35:06Speaker 1: rest of the room can play along if they like,
- 35:08Speaker 1: but the only answers that matter are Randall and Brody. Brody,
- 35:12Speaker 1: how close do you think you are to the right answer?
- 35:15Speaker 3: I think I and I'm within two years, like waffling
- 35:20Speaker 3: on two different years.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Randall, how close do you think you are to the
- 35:23Speaker 1: right answer?
- 35:24Speaker 3: I think I have it.
- 35:25Speaker 8: But I'd also just like to point out that this
- 35:27Speaker 8: is one of those questions that very obviously privileges those
- 35:31Speaker 8: who were born decades earlier than the.
- 35:34Speaker 5: Rest of you.
- 35:35Speaker 3: No, it's like a clear piece of like American history.
- 35:38Speaker 8: I feel like, yeah, but you probably got home from
- 35:40Speaker 8: work and picked up the newspapers.
- 35:48Speaker 1: Here's the question again. The topic is public Lands. What
- 35:51Speaker 1: year did Mount Saint helens Man?
- 35:55Speaker 5: Brody heard it on the family radio?
- 35:58Speaker 3: No, but I was watching Doc with my kids the
- 36:01Speaker 3: other night and they talked about it on there.
- 36:03Speaker 1: Oh do you think they said the year?
- 36:05Speaker 3: I can't remember. Okay, I'm sure they probably did.
- 36:08Speaker 1: Brody stormed in with all the confidence, and now he's
- 36:11Speaker 1: not really sure.
- 36:12Speaker 3: It's sticking in my head, so I'm gonna leave.
- 36:14Speaker 1: It, Randall, Are you ready?
- 36:15Speaker 5: Yes?
- 36:15Speaker 1: Brody? Are you ready?
- 36:16Speaker 3: Yep?
- 36:17Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Morgan saying
- 36:20Speaker 1: nineteen eighty, Hayden sang nineteen eighty two, Trestas saying nineteen
- 36:25Speaker 1: eighty two, Seth saying nineteen eighty two, Chester saying nineteen eighty.
- 36:30Speaker 1: The two competitors left, Randall saying nineteen eighty nine. Brody
- 36:35Speaker 1: sang nineteen eighty one. I'll tell you this, someone in
- 36:39Speaker 1: the room has it dead nuts. The correct answer is
- 36:44Speaker 1: nineteen eighty, making Brody our ruler. He was one year off.
- 36:48Speaker 1: We also had multiple people who hit it right on
- 36:50Speaker 1: the nose. Morgan and Chester, Sorry you didn't make it
- 36:53Speaker 1: to the tie break, dude, I would have.
- 36:55Speaker 6: I was. I was right there on this one. I
- 36:57Speaker 6: don't feel bad.
- 36:58Speaker 1: At all those of you who got it right on
- 36:59Speaker 1: the nose. Did you know it? Or it was just
- 37:01Speaker 1: a good guesses?
- 37:08Speaker 6: That was a good good guess.
- 37:09Speaker 1: Okay, Morgan, did you know that one?
- 37:11Speaker 2: I think so. Yeah, I think I've heard it.
- 37:14Speaker 1: And Brody, if you had to go one year the
- 37:17Speaker 1: other direction, do you think you'd have went to like
- 37:18Speaker 1: eighty two.
