- 0:00Most people have their spiritual motivation filtered through
- 0:04their external personality. If the mind is their predominant
- 0:09part, then it may take a mental turn.
- 0:12If the vital, then a vital turn. If the physical, a physical turn
- 0:19in the life Divine. Sri Robindo describes the human
- 0:22aspiration as grounded in the seeking for God, light, freedom
- 0:27and immortality. The pure expression of the soul,
- 0:31the psychic being, is turned always towards the Divine.
- 0:38We hear many voices in our inner dialogue.
- 0:42Sometimes it is the voice of the mental being and it tries to
- 0:46develop ideas, concepts and a logical framework in its seeking
- 0:51for knowledge. Sometimes it is the voice of the
- 0:55vital desire soul, which wants to acquire power, wealth, sex,
- 1:01fame and dominion. Sometimes it is the voice of the
- 1:06physical body, setting forth its needs, its comforts, and its
- 1:10demands. We are habituated to hear these
- 1:14voices and respond to them. Thus we frequently fail to heed
- 1:19the quiet voice of the soul, which does not insist or demand,
- 1:25but which simply aspires. We may mistake the mental or
- 1:30vital voice for the voice of the soul when they have been
- 1:33influenced by the psychic being, and turn at least partially
- 1:37towards the Divine. These represent steps along the
- 1:41way. As the wise sage often says, any
- 1:45door which opens to the Divine should be accepted as a starting
- 1:50point or an intermediate step along the way, until such time
- 1:56as the soul can directly express its deepest aspirations and gain
- 2:02the adherents and support of the external being in all its parts.
- 2:08Sriorobindo writes quote. People mean different things
- 2:13when they speak of the soul. Sometimes it is what I have
- 2:16called in the Aria the desire soul, that is the vital with its
- 2:22mixed aspirations, desires hungers of all kinds, good and
- 2:27bad, its emotions finer and grosser, or sensational urges
- 2:32crossed by the mind's idealizings and psychic
- 2:35stresses. But sometimes it is also the
- 2:39mind and vital under the stress of a psychic urge.
- 2:43The psychic, so long as it is veiled, must express itself
- 2:47through the mind and vital, and its aspirations are mixed and
- 2:51coloured there by the vital and mental stuff.
- 2:55Thus the veiled psychic urge may express itself in the mind by a
- 3:00hunger in the thought for the knowledge of the Divine, what
- 3:04the Europeans call the intellectual love of God in the
- 3:08vital. It may express itself as a
- 3:11hunger or a hankering after the Divine.
- 3:14It can bring much suffering because of the nature of the
- 3:16vital, its unquiet passions, desires, ardors, troubled
- 3:22emotions, cloudings, depressions, despairs.
- 3:26Nevertheless, all cannot approach, at least cannot at
- 3:30once approach the Divine in the pure psychic way.
- 3:34The mental and vital approaches are often necessary beginnings
- 3:38and better from the spiritual point of view than
- 3:41unsensitiveness to the Divine. It is in both cases a call of
- 3:46the soul, the soul's urge. It only takes a form or color
- 3:52due to the stress of the mind or vital nature and quote reference
