- 0:00[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome to Drinking Throw.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, welcome to Drinking Bros.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_02]: Kids.
- 0:13[SPEAKER_02]: Got a big Tuesday show for you here today.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_02]: One of our favorite actors of all time is on the show.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_02]: Tom Barron, cheers.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_02]: Let's hear round of applause here, round of applause.
- 0:28[SPEAKER_02]: There you go.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_02]: Tom, thanks for being here.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_02]: I run a group of just talking about your couple weeks ago on the show before the public is hit us up.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_02]: We were talking about major league on this show.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_02]: You've been a part of so many amazing films over the history of your career.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_02]: And you're still working.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_02]: Non-stop, dude.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_02]: Pumping out, you're doing a documentary.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_02]: That's coming out here pretty soon.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't have too many more years left, but I'm, yeah, I'm still doing it.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, by the way, all those states you mentioned, they're my favorite states.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_00]: You know what you surprised?
- 1:10[SPEAKER_01]: You're playing running for office, Tom, or what's going on there?
- 1:13[SPEAKER_00]: No, I know.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: It sounds like it doesn't.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: It sounds like a politician.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_02]: It sure does.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, what's, tell everybody about the documentary that's coming out.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it is a documentary about a Marine Battalion that was in Afghanistan and what they went through and it's
- 1:33[SPEAKER_00]: Militarily, it's like all the small little maneuvers they made through this area, you know, like squad and put in size maneuvers.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and most yeah, it's it's fascinating because over the course of your career you've been involved in so many military projects.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_02]: Do you have family in the military or did your career just kind of happen to be in in some of the greatest military, you know,
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: Well, my dad was a tank captain in World War II and he served in the Pacific liberation on the Philippines.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_00]: And he was a printer that Chicago sometimes when he got drafted three days before Pearl Harbor.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_00]: and because his typing was so fast and it was a regular like a typewriter, keyboard on a line of type machine.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_00]: And that was before offset printing and that's the old, you know, the lead type things, hot metal type, line of type machines, and he,
- 2:49[SPEAKER_00]: rarely made a mistake.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_00]: I never saw him make a mistake on a typewriter.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_00]: He's one of the fastest types I've ever seen.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_00]: And he, apart from because of his job, but also because he read so much.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_00]: He had perfect spelling, perfect punctuation, perfect grammar, and huge vocabulary.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_00]: He would do little rewrite sometimes of the reporters.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_00]: Before he sent it on to the editor, but he, you know, amazingly sometimes those guys didn't have the best punctuation and spelling but he did.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, they were so impressed with them on that level.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_00]: And then with a rifle and pistol, each level, they said, by the time this was a basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_00]: And before even finished, they said, you're going to be going to OCS.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_00]: And he says, what's that?
- 3:47[SPEAKER_00]: They said officers candidate school.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I don't know, I, and they said now you're going, he said, what am I going to do there?
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: What are I, and they said, well, you're either being an artillery or armor corps.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: He said, why?
- 4:03[SPEAKER_00]: And they said, because your math is, you need to have really good math, your math reading, and everything else, the scores are just so high.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: So, and that math helped him as well.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_00]: And I remember having a problem in physics, I say the problem was a problem sent home to do, and it was a triangulation thing.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: And he walked by the table on the kitchen there and he saw me doing it.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_00]: He goes, what are you doing there?
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: And I said, oh, I'm doing this triangulation.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you for my physics class.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, yeah, I go, how do you know this?
- 4:45[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, because we had to do it,
- 4:50[SPEAKER_00]: He says, because, you know, the barrel of the tank lifts up, you shoot up like that.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_00]: You have to know how high to lift the barrel, how far to go down.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_00]: Where you want it exactly to land out there.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: And then you're always reading maps to figure out where you're at.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: I want it.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_00]: OK. Makes sense.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, well, he said in our toldroom be the same thing.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_00]: The only thing with tanks is they're just moving our toldroom.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_00]: I said, yep.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: But I, I don't know, I kind of, and I was really in a total history, but I just finished a huge book on Napoleon and not like the first book, but, and it was, and it was fascinating, too.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_00]: And so it's, I'm into history, I'm into the military thing.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: I wanted to go to West Point, two guys from my class made it.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't, I don't know that,
- 5:49[SPEAKER_02]: of anyway yeah and then what the reason I asked that is I did a military movie which is how I met my co-host here and everybody else involved and my family was in the military but there was nothing really going on at the time.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_02]: Um, so it wasn't like anything exciting or anything patriotic to fight for that time.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_02]: It was pretty much a dead period.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_02]: And I remember asking my grandfather, hey, is this, you know, something I should check out?
- 6:17[SPEAKER_02]: And he goes, no, you're just going to be my own grass all day.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_02]: And he was right at the time, right?
- 6:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_02]: He was very honest.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's mostly what I did when I was in the 80s.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_01]: Second, we were either at war.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_01]: I was getting yelled at and mowing the lawn.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_01]: It was one of the two things.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_00]: you were in the grass.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_01]: And you're in the grass right now on screen.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_02]: But what I found in working in that movie was that's
- 6:48[SPEAKER_02]: People, you know, veterans in particular, were so much better to work with than everybody else that I'd worked with in Hollywood.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_02]: Behind the scenes, the crew, everything was more efficient, it was faster.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't have to deal with the typical devenous of everybody else on set, because it was actual veterans that were starring in the movie and behind the camera and all that other stuff.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_02]: And it completely changed my mindset of, oh man, I don't know if I want to go back to this anymore
- 7:16[SPEAKER_02]: this way now, and I love working this way now, and if I'm going to do it, I would rather just make military movies with my buddies and all that other stuff, and one of the things that we all share and come in here is Dale Dye.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_02]: I'll take this puttune.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_02]: Dale Dye was in the
- 7:42[SPEAKER_02]: Probably the most famous of all time as far as military tech.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_02]: Like a tech guy behind the scenes who does it, and I believe he did yours on Platoon, correct?
- 7:53[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yes.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_00]: He was the, um, um, yeah.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_00]: It was the Sergeant Major of that whole operation.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_00]: And, and Oliver, it was great for Oliver because he could, he could, he could, he could depend on Dale to, to handle all of that.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_00]: And Dale made it so he would depend on me.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_00]: You know, as the staff's origin, the platoon, and me, I'm my, you know, three, three, four squat, you know, squat, sergeants, squat, squat ladders, and so it just was instant chain of command, like from day one.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_00]: And I would sneak out at night and check holes to see if somebody would sleep.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: Because it's like two on two off two on two off, and there are two guys to a fox hole.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_00]: And I would catch you.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_00]: You guys sleepin'.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: It's good.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_01]: I think, I went on very little sleep doing all that too.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's how it is, right?
- 8:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Dale's done a really good job on a number of movies.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_01]: Kind of creating, I mean, it's, it's a movie, right?
- 9:03[SPEAKER_01]: You're doing, it's, it's like you're in real war, so you got to try to, uh,
- 9:07[SPEAKER_01]: Recreate distress somehow because it comes through and everything you do that tension Not just between the guys but the internal turmoil comes through and pretty much everything you do on on screen Especially when it's a war movie like that especially and the fucked-up situation you guys were in and yeah Great to be a non-liked that
- 9:27[SPEAKER_00]: If funny, you say that about art imitating life or vice versa, I remember in the trading period, I don't know if this occurred to Willham at the time, but since then we've talked about it, but he started complaining about how I was always putting his squad up on point.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_00]: he's going to come on bonds, I mean, you know, like I, I mean, you know, like I said, they haven't had any fucking sleep at this at that, you know, and so on and so forth.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_00]: And I said, uh, just just do it.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: And, and it was a scene that later is in the movie.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_00]: Really, which scene is it?
- 10:09[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's right up front and he's going, hey, I've got some guys that have got short time, they're going to be going home soon.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_00]: Why is my squad always on point?
- 10:17[SPEAKER_00]: They did it, it was actually a scene in the movie that had been written before we ended up doing the same scene without thinking about it at the moment.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_00]: That's why it was just like, yeah, he was pissed off that I was always putting him up, you know, I said, well, you're the best squad, get the best guys.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_02]: It's interesting and like I'm looking to the background because there's been obviously this is one of the most famous movies of all time and you hear these stories You don't know whether they're true or not And at least today we get to go to the source.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_02]: Did you lose 27 pounds Preparing for this Working with Dale die and didn't they have you guys in like a boot camp for like a month or something beforehand?
- 11:00[SPEAKER_00]: Well, we were three weeks, I think.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, three weeks in the bush, yeah.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: And it just started immediately.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_00]: And boy, we get out there and we're digging foxes.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: We would get rated at night.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, these Filipino special forces, guys.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_00]: They had fake mortars, you know, from the effects department.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, first night we're out there.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_01]: Sips in the water.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_01]: No way.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_01]: Those of those of those of the artillery simulators are loud as fuck.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_01]: They are loud and I use them a basic training too.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it was like, that's when it began.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_00]: And then to stop night's they wouldn't, you know, which is the other side of war when it gets too quiet.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_00]: and you can't sleep because it's too quiet.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's like the scenes were written but we were just in training, we're not like rehearsing scenes.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: We didn't rehearse.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_00]: We were just, you know, learn all this stuff, the radio and, you know, first day in blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_00]: Someone in so forth, you know, tactics, you know,
- 12:22[SPEAKER_00]: ambush counter ambush, you know, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera, and, you know, and deal with, just had a million story, too, about field rations and, and how these guys would, you know, put some of that shit together, and they would, you know, the, um, the company Lee and Perron sent like the hot sauce and these guys would, that, you know, some of that wrote a recipe book from, from that.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_00]: up with a recipe book after the war, which I'm sure every bit bought because they probably thought it was kind of funny and they actually did it themselves, you know.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_00]: So it was tiny little touches and stuff there, you know.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, just all.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_00]: And he was, he was all over it, you know.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he really was.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_00]: It's, it's, uh, I just read,
- 13:14[SPEAKER_00]: Well, he's set me on computer.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_00]: I'm reading this, which by the way, I don't recommend reading a thousand pages.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'm a computer, but you know, have the hardback way to do something, but it's by autobiography, a thousand pages.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_00]: It's about 900.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my gosh, that's like a hell of a...
- 13:43[SPEAKER_00]: And even then, it wasn't all the stories, you know.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's, and one thing, I remember we had a meeting, this was for a sniper.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_00]: We met, we met with a meeting with a director, a sniper.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_00]: We were in a, I guess it was my hotel in LA or something.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_00]: And so we met and also an Australian, first-aid,
- 14:13[SPEAKER_00]: in the in the jungles in Brazil and I had him come and it said fine ended up hiring him too because he was good but it was funny because we were sitting there and I I was going on and he says now what about Belize and the director was a Brazilian yeah he's from Brazil
- 14:42[SPEAKER_00]: He goes, well, I work there on dogs of war, about mercenaries in Chris and Milwaukee, and instead of everybody.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, which, you know, it could look, it could look like Africa.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_00]: And I go, I know, yeah, you know, I have to kind of gave my reasons.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_00]: And the first AD,
- 15:04[SPEAKER_00]: The Aussie, he pops up and he and he'd been there on the Skido coasters, or whatever that movie was, right?
- 15:12[SPEAKER_00]: He worked on that and he goes, oh, no, no, no, no, and he starts listening to it, right?
- 15:17[SPEAKER_00]: And then Dale says, well, I was there too.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_00]: You were there because, yeah, we didn't even mention it because, yeah, I don't know,
- 15:27[SPEAKER_00]: But I was there and they said, what were you doing there?
- 15:29[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, well, I was training with the British Army Gurka's who are all from Nepal, right?
- 15:38[SPEAKER_00]: They're from Nepal.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, good little soldiers.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_00]: These guys are really tough, good mountain troops.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_00]: And he says this training with them.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, one of their guys got murdered by one of the locals.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_00]: And they went back, shit, berserk.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_00]: They pulled out their Gurka knives.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_00]: And they went to town.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, literally downtown.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, wow, after.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_00]: And it was, whoo, it was scary, bad shit.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think the blazing police or army would have had a chance against those guys, the Gurkids.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_00]: But deal with their train with them.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_00]: I go, of course you were.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_00]: I can't ever tell me that.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, all right.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and then it was another time of this like,
- 16:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I was like, um, I was with the, uh, the French Foreign Legion.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_00]: I said, what?
- 16:33[SPEAKER_00]: The French, yeah, it was like military lays on a transfer, you know, thing like, Officer goes, works with them.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_00]: One of theirs comes at works with ours.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_00]: You know, that kind of exchange kind of sort of deal.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the Foreign Legion, you can go, hmm.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_00]: He's doing a training thing with the Australian marines, I guess, I don't know, but some Australian pilot takes him up, boom, and you know, in a plane and a jet plane, he goes up, Barcelona for himself and his helmet.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't know, and he just, just end the story, which, I got, I got to be true.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_01]: They are.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_01]: Well, Dale's got a boss with a, with a, uh, Valor device and two purple three purple hearts.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_01]: Three, four, I think three.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_01]: So he's, he's got some stories for sure.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_01]: And, uh, I wonder because he was on,
- 17:37[SPEAKER_01]: He was the consultant on sniper as well, did you ever get taught like, hey, Dale shut the fuck up dude, it's been six years if you talk and shit, I don't want to get a turn because he didn't, but he's been with 60 years, he's been running around yelling at people calling him turds all the time, even did it to us.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_02]: that movie you're talking about is the great rate by the way that was another military film uh... they were down there in australia i i know what you're talking about uh... they were down there for like six months but um... i i i don't know if you're aware of this uh... or if he's ever told you but we don't know where they're on snipe or two oh you were okay no i'm sorry the first sniper oh got you got you okay yeah well he went up to the other thing he was talking about was with the laws australia marines
- 18:26[SPEAKER_00]: Right, and in a earlier time, that was, yeah.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, got you, got you.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_02]: Because the end of going to another one, I don't know why they wrote a shoot and I'll show you.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_02]: But that was the great raid for that one.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_02]: But I don't know if you've ever asked them.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_02]: But after we finished the movie together, we had them on the show.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_02]: And then we asked from the cast of Platoon, as he was going in the back story, how long you guys were out there, who was the best that you thought would have made the best soldier out there?
- 18:53[SPEAKER_02]: And do you know what his answer was?
- 18:57[SPEAKER_02]: Out of all the guys you worked with who do you think would have been the best?
- 19:06[SPEAKER_02]: It's a tough one because there's so many great actors in this film.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, you're looking at Charlie Sheen, Keith David, Willem Dafoe, Force Whitaker, Mark Moses is Lieutenant Wolf, who was brilliant.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_02]: Yep.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_02]: The Johnson McKinley, Kevin Dillon Lee, Johnny Cap,
- 19:27[SPEAKER_02]: He said Charlie Sheen, which is interesting.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, he took his job seriously, and then he would rank you guys.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if you know that, but he would rank you guys on who he thought was the best afterwards and then kind of give his notes and all that other stuff, and that's pretty much how he became the go-to guy in that industry for years and years and then obviously
- 19:54[SPEAKER_02]: and sniper too.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_00]: And then I got him on rough frygers when I played Teddy Roosevelt and we did Spanish American War and the rough frygers regiment, famous regiment and it's you know,
- 20:14[SPEAKER_00]: that's a different war with different weapons, you know, in different tactics and, you know, we did that, too.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_02]: Real quick, Tom, you've done some podcast before we knew we got some sponsors that put the show on the air first and foremost.
- 20:28[SPEAKER_02]: Firstform.com, forward slash drinking, bros, five, free made sticks with a purchase of any supplement on the sites.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_02]: They're delightful, we are surrounded by them.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_02]: You see all the boxes everywhere, however.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_02]: their empty.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_02]: Because we've eaten them all.
- 20:46[SPEAKER_02]: That's how great they are.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_02]: You should have these with you everywhere you are.
- 20:50[SPEAKER_02]: Backpacks, flights, cars, all of it, man.
- 20:54[SPEAKER_02]: Excellent meal, replacements.
- 20:56[SPEAKER_02]: God forbid you're in trouble anywhere and you just need something to snack on this.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_02]: So keep you full.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_02]: I can promise you that.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_02]: Amazing flavors.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_02]: There was something with the yellow one right there.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_01]: That's the the breakfast sausage one.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_02]: They do have it back.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_02]: I asked you yesterday blue.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_02]: We can just got there.
- 21:14[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't see yesterday you might be right.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_02]: I don't see yesterday either.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe this is in the show when they were like a Ross was fishing out of let's put it back.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_02]: That's what we started with.
- 21:25[SPEAKER_02]: Then we moved on to the Italians and the sharp chetters and now they get a whole line of them.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, over there, they're amazing and you get to try them for free.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, again, any supplement on the sites, five free meats to oxy greens could be the protein powder.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_02]: They just got a new flavor of that.
- 21:42[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, we talked about the Ross Patterson Revolution earlier.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_02]: What was that new flavor?
- 21:45[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that just came out of nowhere.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_02]: Was it the Sherber or cotton, the cotton, the cotton, the cotton, there it is.

- 28:30[SPEAKER_02]: Please support the show, tell them that we sent you.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, with Platoon in particular, when you finish something like that, how do you shake
- 28:43[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'll tell you, it wasn't easy.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I knew I was getting married because I was engaged.
- 28:50[SPEAKER_00]: So I had all that as a kind of distraction, but I missed everybody.
- 28:57[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I started missing them when guys would die or something in the movie and, you know, or get D roast out and they would suddenly be gone.
- 29:05[SPEAKER_00]: And we always would sit down and have kind of a big Viking dinner where everybody would be there to say goodbye and we, you know, we'd have drinks and laughs at this and that the next day they'd be gone that chair would be empty.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_00]: And it kind of went on that to the very end to Kevin Dillon and myself and Keith
- 29:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's free of us.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it actually got down to that, I'm going.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_00]: Whoa, it was lonely.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I missed them.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_02]: I bet, I bet.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_02]: And then for you, Dan, I don't think I've ever asked you this on the show.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_02]: Was there a military movie that you hung on to that really influenced you?
- 29:47[SPEAKER_02]: Um, I, that influenced me in what way that made you want to join potentially, or you said, all right, because my kids are starting to get to that age where they're watching stuff like that and they're like, Dad, how do you do that?
- 29:58[SPEAKER_02]: Um, was there one for you?
- 30:00[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I mean, I grew up watching that.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_01]: My dad was an infantryman in the honor first, so, you know, I kind of grew up around that stuff anyways.
- 30:09[SPEAKER_01]: And my grandfather was an airborne.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I'm the third consecutive infantry paratrooper, my family.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_01]: So I think there might be something genetic going on there because I didn't really get along with my dad or my grandfather that well, and didn't think too highly of either of them to be frank about people, but apparently there were pretty good soldiers.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_01]: My grandfather was in the 11th Airborne, which jumped into Luzon, Philippines.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_01]: It was part of that great raid situation, but yeah, the
- 30:39[SPEAKER_01]: I grew up watching all the movies and it was green berets with John Wayne was a big one.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_01]: The dirty dozen was a big one like special operations, kinetic stuff always was attractive to me like getting to put it bluntly.
- 30:57[SPEAKER_01]: Fucking shit up was always something that I was interested in.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_01]: Um, you know, uh, so yeah, I think sniper was a big one for me.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_01]: I really enjoyed that because you didn't see, um, one of the problems with,
- 31:13[SPEAKER_01]: military movies back in the day is that there was a lot of goofball nonsense going on like I think there were entertaining like delta force with Chuck Norris is uh it's it's bicycle right it's like the the events are so crazy one dude going into something and to shoot everybody with an oozy is is is not the way military operations happen and I think you know that even watch them but uh
- 31:39[SPEAKER_01]: A two-man scout cyber team going into the boy somewhere to fucking pop some dude.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_01]: That's real life A dude having a breakdown because he doesn't belong there is also real life So sniper was a big one for me and then later on and obviously, you know blackhawk downs a big one and then band of brothers comes out
- 32:00[SPEAKER_01]: Not too long after that.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_01]: And then that one's kind of hard to ignore.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it comes out and then in the same year These assholes fly planes and or buildings and I think a lot of us were already primed for a fight before that, but that definitely pushed it over the edge So that those are a couple that I really enjoyed, but I liked
- 32:20[SPEAKER_01]: I like some of the ones that dug into the personalities of the people that were in that were going through the situation as well.
- 32:30[SPEAKER_01]: Like, so many of the chat here mentioned Hamburger Hill.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_01]: That was a pretty good one.
- 32:35[SPEAKER_01]: Platoon was a good one.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_01]: Just like the
- 32:39[SPEAKER_01]: It's easy to look at platoon and see barns as the bad guy.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_01]: But once you've been to war, you know people like that.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_01]: Not necessarily guys that are gonna frag their buddies or anything, but dudes who are like over it.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_01]: I'm tired of losing, I'm tired of losing my friends, and if I've got whoever's got to die to get us out of here, that's who's gonna die.
- 33:00[SPEAKER_01]: I know people like that.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_01]: Not that again, not that they would frag their buddies or anything.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_01]: But then just the arc of
- 33:09[SPEAKER_01]: how your conscientiousness affects your ability to do war fighting at a high level.
- 33:14[SPEAKER_01]: It's something that people have to deal with in a real way.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_01]: And I think Oliver is one of the only people that have ever tried to tackle that back in the day.
- 33:21[SPEAKER_01]: I guess Millius II, with a apocalypse now, tried to tackle a little bit.
- 33:25[SPEAKER_01]: But that's another like fantastical situation.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's more like psychological stuff.
- 33:31[SPEAKER_01]: But as far as just like war movies and stuff like that, I think those are the ones that I really enjoyed.
- 33:37[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and then for you Tom again, because you've done so many military movies, it seems like you obviously really enjoy it and you really enjoy the history of it and everything else.
- 33:49[SPEAKER_02]: And earlier I was asking you about the heaviness of Platoon and how you felt after that and how it is shaken the character, was that why you kind of pivoted and did a movie like Major League.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, no, no, no, no, that the two haven't really nothing to do with each other.
- 34:08[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it was kind of strange that
- 34:12[SPEAKER_00]: I got a call from Charlie Sheen, you know, because I'd stayed in touch with a number of the guys and if I did some to my wedding, I'm probably about eight of them there, I think.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_00]: We have a good time.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I got a call from Charlie saying, hey, Ernie here, I go, yeah, what's up?
- 34:36[SPEAKER_00]: He said, have you seen this movie majorly?
- 34:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he says, what do you think I go?
- 34:45[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I think it's a great baseball film, first of all.
- 34:51[SPEAKER_00]: And secondly, I think it's pretty funny, you know, it's a good comedy.
- 34:58[SPEAKER_00]: But it's got to be a good baseball film or it's not going to watch, right?
- 35:02[SPEAKER_00]: Then it goes, yeah, well, that's what I thought.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_00]: He goes, you think you'll do it and I go, Yeah, I think I will.
- 35:12[SPEAKER_01]: We were again No, Dale died this time though.
- 35:16[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think so.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_00]: But it's funny.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_00]: I remember I remember in the Philippines like going down It's just was like right right towards the end you know with some of the guys that disappeared and everything And Charlie had a little I don't know or his quarters were but they kind of like on the very edge near the jungle and then was like
- 35:37[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, kind of away from the, you know, where we ate and, you know, the bar was and all that stuff.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, I went down there and I'd never been.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_00]: It was like, you know, this little who would show anything.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_00]: But so I went down there and I, and I, and yeah, come on in.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_00]: I walked in and I go, whoa, he was like, what's the important thing?
- 35:58[SPEAKER_00]: I go, what, what is all you, you got?
- 36:02[SPEAKER_00]: Like, each is, oh, my mom sent it.
- 36:04[SPEAKER_00]: And I go, your mom sent you all the stuff to the Philippines.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I got like just air-flighted to shit out here to the jungle and she keeps us Yeah, well, I could Charlie, it's like albums and you know and and and C.D.
- 36:23[SPEAKER_00]: players and speakers and I'm like, my god, what was she thinking?
- 36:29[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, you know, I got, okay, listen.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_00]: Listen, your next job don't be carrying all this shit with your travel light, just in other necessities, what you need, you know, of course one of those is your script, but you know what I'm saying?
- 36:45[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I mean, be ready to move all the time because you change location, you're gonna carry all this shit or ship it off or mail it, I mean, come on, come on.
- 36:55[SPEAKER_00]: Will we end up doing a scene like that?
- 37:00[SPEAKER_00]: And it's the scene where,
- 37:04[SPEAKER_00]: Willem says, hey, look, come here.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_00]: What are you got in there?
- 37:09[SPEAKER_00]: What's in your rucksack?
- 37:12[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I just, you know, I got it.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_00]: You go, books?
- 37:15[SPEAKER_00]: You can't, books are what I mean?
- 37:16[SPEAKER_00]: It does, you know, I mean, yes, you don't need that.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_00]: Shit can this, 86 that, but now you're ready.
- 37:26[SPEAKER_00]: And I go Charlie, it's like that scene.
- 37:28[SPEAKER_00]: You have a willem.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_00]: watching your rucksack, what is all this shit?
- 37:34[SPEAKER_00]: I said kick it, carry lights, give it simple.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_00]: When he came down, he flew down in the South Carolina because I had set up this little practice team.
- 37:44[SPEAKER_00]: So we could practice.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_00]: All these guys were ex college players and stuff like that and they were all good with that way.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I got a guy, a new guy with his head of maintenance at the high school,
- 38:02[SPEAKER_00]: in the high school would be closed when this all happened and um and we were able to we put together a practice team and the guy mode the field he's he built up the mound he put the pictures rubber out there he had the basis he had on plate he brought a pitching machine so I could practice pop up falls as a catcher or we could do hitting practice any gave us the key to the place
- 38:31[SPEAKER_00]: and the whole field was covered by big, you know, South Carolina trees, so that looking loose couldn't be poking their heads in while we were all there practicing.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_00]: Because it was Charlie and myself and Yager, it's a B.A.G.R, right?
- 38:47[SPEAKER_00]: And I said, here's my other car, here's the keys.
- 38:50[SPEAKER_00]: You guys, you know, you want to go in the town and eat and all that shit and stuff fine.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_00]: Go ahead, you know, and the cars they did.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, but those guys, they said, but then I said, look, we'll have a party at the end of our training session with Yager.
- 39:06[SPEAKER_00]: And I said, and then you can bring the wives and girlfriends.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_00]: Which is what we did.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_00]: You know, because they were all whining like when are we going to meet I'm only, you know, that kind of thing, yeah, he said we'll do it at the end of a party.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_00]: That's a great idea.
- 39:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, yes, yes, we would be doing it anyway.
- 39:25[SPEAKER_00]: I think, you know, so that's what we did.
- 39:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and that work fine.
- 39:31[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, I said, because I told you here, I go, listen, I said, this is this, I said, we're going to Milwaukee's going to be like St. Louis and the humidity, you know, that's where we're going to be.
- 39:44[SPEAKER_00]: And I said, and we're out here practicing the California with this dry wind blowing off the ocean and we don't even sweat.
- 39:52[SPEAKER_00]: I go, this is at reality because you've got that right, Maranger, and I say, this is, I go, yeah, it's a Mississippi River Valley, it's like in a hole in the jungle.
- 40:06[SPEAKER_00]: So muggy and human, it says, it is the worst.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_00]: I go, well, we need to do a little of that in South Carolina.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_00]: So I can be home a little bit too.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_00]: You guys are like, you drive, you're living in your houses.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_00]: I'm in a hotel here.
- 40:20[SPEAKER_00]: So,
- 40:21[SPEAKER_00]: and I'll give you a place to stay in the car.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_00]: It worked out great, it was fun, they loved it.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_00]: And Charlie shows up at the airport and I picked him up at the airport in Savannah, George.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_00]: And they said, Charlie, where's your talking to?
- 40:34[SPEAKER_00]: This is all I need.
- 40:39[SPEAKER_00]: That's it.
- 40:40[SPEAKER_00]: He goes, yeah, I got my spikes, you know, I got my, you know, my glove, I got a ball in there to kind of put it in and yeah, you know, I don't know, and that was it, and he had like one shirt or something like that.
- 40:57[SPEAKER_00]: And he says, I've been traveling like he told me to do.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_00]: He says, like I was like a gift of a show, I'll just give my shirt to my driver.
- 41:06[SPEAKER_00]: all right.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 41:11[SPEAKER_00]: It was pretty cute.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_02]: And for me, like, you know, it's one of my favorite films of all time.
- 41:18[SPEAKER_02]: And your, your, my personal favorite character in this movie.
- 41:21[SPEAKER_02]: And the reason why is okay.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_02]: You were the, you will, here's, here's why.
- 41:24[SPEAKER_02]: There's a lot of, a lot of characters in there.
- 41:26[SPEAKER_02]: There's a lot of characters in there.
- 41:28[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of characters in there.
- 41:29[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of
- 41:30[SPEAKER_02]: characters in there, but if you don't have a grounding force, that is real, like I believe you were a real baseball player and the way you walked in your mannerisms as a catcher.
- 41:42[SPEAKER_02]: And you knew it was your last season and your last go round and everything about it.
- 41:47[SPEAKER_02]: It almost grounded the rest of these characters, because I'm sure if you're reading a script like this.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously you got Charlie Sheen who was notorious for, you know, not only partying,
- 41:58[SPEAKER_02]: You know, throughout his life, but especially then, you got Wesley Snipes's Willie Mays, Hayes, and you get all these other guys that are all playing characters that it could have been way, way over the top.
- 42:11[SPEAKER_00]: If you didn't have a grounding force as a leader, I think I talked to Hager about, maybe
- 42:26[SPEAKER_00]: kind of so I'm again, where was it?
- 42:28[SPEAKER_00]: When were you doing Gettysburg?
- 42:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's something like that.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, Ketcher is, well he's the one player that looks out there in that direction.
- 42:44[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody else is looking in towards the plate.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_00]: And he's out there reading the whole game, you know, where are the outfitters?
- 42:53[SPEAKER_00]: Who's the next hitter?
- 42:54[SPEAKER_00]: They know the book, they had to know all the hitters, because you know, and the kind of like, if they're not the captain of the team, the kind of like a co-captant or something, you know?
- 43:05[SPEAKER_00]: They have a lot of say, and they have a lot of say with the pitching staff, because they're always studying all the different hitters.
- 43:15[SPEAKER_00]: That book, they call it the book.
- 43:18[SPEAKER_00]: they memorize that.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I did feel general when I was playing ball.
- 43:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, okay, there you go.
- 43:25[SPEAKER_01]: Feel general.
- 43:25[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you're in charge of everything.
- 43:28[SPEAKER_01]: I see it.
- 43:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's compared to football.
- 43:30[SPEAKER_01]: I see it like middle lineback or defensive lineback.
- 43:33[SPEAKER_00]: Don't you?
- 43:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's pretty much how we took it.
- 43:36[SPEAKER_01]: And it's good.
- 43:37[SPEAKER_01]: You guys, I mean, I don't know if you could make a movie like this today.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_01]: I know Wesley Snipes couldn't play baseball at all, but everybody else was pretty good.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_01]: All the other guys like group group plan baseball and it's not as faulty.
- 43:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's a group group plan of the sports, but these days, I don't know how you do that.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know how you make a movie with guys actually taking swings.
- 43:58[SPEAKER_01]: And like you mentioned, a catcher pulling this mask off and catching a foul ball that's going in the opposite direction of everybody else on the field.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_01]: That's one of the more difficult things that a catcher does, right?
- 44:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's sometimes he sees them go over the railing in the first place line or over on the third base line.
- 44:19[SPEAKER_00]: I think yes, yeah, they can get hurt, but they're pretty tough.
- 44:25[SPEAKER_00]: They are a lot like middle line backers because they got these big guys Maryland down on them when they're stealing from third.
- 44:35[SPEAKER_01]: Not anymore, you can't do anything anymore.
- 44:37[SPEAKER_01]: I think, I think,
- 44:40[SPEAKER_01]: The NFL is getting ready to, I don't know if you're beginning to feel good, but I think they might be ready to go to flag football entirely now.
- 44:47[SPEAKER_01]: There was a, there was a running back from the giants who got a unnecessary roughness call for putting his head down and driving through a linebacker, like what the fuck is that about?
- 44:57[SPEAKER_01]: That's the whole job as a smash that guy in the pieces.
- 45:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 45:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I mean, he's, he just is liable to get hurt as a linebacker is.
- 45:07[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it was that Kim Scadabo, and that's who it was.
- 45:11[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, with Major League, I've heard some legendary stories about the guys partying and all that stuff.
- 45:18[SPEAKER_02]: Were you more like your character with those guys to kind of keep them in line and say, hey, we're also making a movie here.
- 45:25[SPEAKER_02]: You can't go out and rage every night?
- 45:29[SPEAKER_00]: No, I mean, because I...
- 45:32[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I guess I wasn't watching Charlie close enough.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_00]: But that I think that was more major league, too.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_00]: I checked with the maids up there on the floor and that top floor where Charlie was and I said, I'll set room in there.
- 45:48[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, he's got a big room, not like mine, but he's got a mine, you know, forget it.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, you know, it's like one guy in there.
- 45:55[SPEAKER_00]: But I said, what is his room like?
- 45:57[SPEAKER_00]: I go,
- 45:58[SPEAKER_00]: He said, it is trash every day.
- 46:01[SPEAKER_00]: I'm trashed.
- 46:04[SPEAKER_00]: I go, yeah, okay, thanks.
- 46:12[SPEAKER_00]: But I didn't say the thing about it, I just started laughing, okay.
- 46:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 46:17[SPEAKER_02]: And he was all in time and everything else, like he was there on time.
- 46:22[SPEAKER_02]: And the rest of the cast made it to- Yeah, he was on time.
- 46:25[SPEAKER_00]: He looked a little hung over on some days, you know.
- 46:27[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he was much more disciplined on Platoon, of course, you know.
- 46:31[SPEAKER_00]: But that I suppose was easy to do, you know, under the circumstances.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, it wasn't the same, it wasn't the same.
- 46:44[SPEAKER_00]: Too many diversions involved tomorrow, I guess.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and with Major League, I still can send that if you're not in it, I think it would have been probably too far over the top.
- 46:55[SPEAKER_02]: Instead, it just turned into this inspirational, never-ending thing that still lives on to this day.
- 47:02[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, he's kind of a little bit kind of a narrator too in a way.
- 47:06[SPEAKER_00]: Like, when he's talking to himself, back behind the plate and stuff, when he talks to himself, he's kind of like a narrator.
- 47:14[SPEAKER_02]: When you go back to your career and look at it, is there one movie in particular that was your favorite?
- 47:21[SPEAKER_02]: Can you pick one of them?
- 47:22[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it's just never ending here your resume.
- 47:26[SPEAKER_02]: Is there one that you can go back to and say, alright, that was the the best script that I read I played this role the best that I possibly could and this is exactly how this movie I thought was going to turn out Well
- 47:43[SPEAKER_00]: Ordinarily, I would say platoon, but, you know, I consider sometimes these parts like kids.
- 47:53[SPEAKER_00]: You, you know, one day one-year favorite, the other day another one-year favorite, you know?
- 47:58[SPEAKER_00]: It's kind of hard to pick sometimes, but I really, really loved playing Teddy Roosevelt in Rough Riders, and I warn me out because of his energy.
- 48:12[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he's talking about a guy that just never stopped.
- 48:16[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Trump reminds me a bit of that.
- 48:19[SPEAKER_00]: I go, when does he sleep?
- 48:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 48:21[SPEAKER_00]: He's up a three in the morning calling people and he's like, let's go, let's go, let's go.
- 48:25[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and that's like, that was Roosevelt.
- 48:29[SPEAKER_00]: and his wife said, see, enough, please.
- 48:33[SPEAKER_00]: He would come back from the day at the White House of this and all that that, you know, involves and he'd come back and he would play with his kids in the backyard and he's running around like a, like a cheeses you're like a two year old.
- 48:48[SPEAKER_00]: She loved him, but she said, she's like, until you're old, and he was, he never grew up.
- 48:56[SPEAKER_00]: And it's just, but he was hysterically funny with the press, interviews he would do with the press, he was such a character.
- 49:09[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and so much energy and he had like a photographic, it's not a photographic memory, just in a ten steel trap, retentive memory, and I think Trump does too.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_00]: Watching him.
- 49:27[SPEAKER_00]: But it's like he, the energy just could work, could wear everybody out, and it warns me how to.
- 49:36[SPEAKER_00]: Because I just plain him.
- 49:38[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and jokingly, we always say this dinner and say this in the show all the time.
- 49:41[SPEAKER_02]: Whatever cocktail, drug cocktail, Trump is on, give it to me, because that guy's got relentless energy right now.
- 49:47[SPEAKER_02]: He's doing three rallies a day.
- 49:49[SPEAKER_02]: Still, that's 80, and I've never seen anything like it.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_00]: Now, he does look tired, but I mean, my guy, which of us have been through this?
- 49:59[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah.
- 50:01[SPEAKER_00]: McDonald's.
- 50:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's my Donald's and dice.
- 50:04[SPEAKER_00]: You put it in the McDonald's.
- 50:08[SPEAKER_01]: he's he's like McDonald's and Diet Coke all day and it just happens.
- 50:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but but yeah, he was and he like
- 50:20[SPEAKER_00]: He spoke German, he would do speeches on the East side.
- 50:25[SPEAKER_00]: East side of Manhattan, to the German neighborhoods, it's stuff he would speak in German.
- 50:32[SPEAKER_00]: He would try French, and I do it in the movie.
- 50:36[SPEAKER_00]: Like, although I have one scene in German, like where I'm totally fluent.
- 50:40[SPEAKER_00]: But I have to see with a French woman at the White House, they're early on, and it's like,
- 50:47[SPEAKER_00]: and it's like really bad for Angie and that's he would speak this terrible French and the French ambassador was one of his best friends would go walking with him and he would go, let's go for a walk, right?
- 51:00[SPEAKER_00]: And they would discuss everything on a walk that way he could get exercise.
- 51:06[SPEAKER_00]: He had been a roar and a boxer at Harvard
- 51:11[SPEAKER_00]: while he's studying studying and studying, which he's just bringing in that.
- 51:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, they would be going out to dinner.
- 51:25[SPEAKER_00]: She, you know, when the course, you know, they had all those, you know, big feathers in their hair.
- 51:30[SPEAKER_00]: And the, you know, they really kind of outlandish outfits so the time.
- 51:35[SPEAKER_00]: And he would be waiting for her.
- 51:37[SPEAKER_00]: Look, I just watch and facing downstairs by the front door, waiting for, you know, probably all the couple times up to where Ada, Ada's come on.
- 51:50[SPEAKER_00]: It was a speed reader, just bumble, bumble, bumble, bumble, bumble, bumble, probably read five, six, seven books a week.
- 51:58[SPEAKER_02]: And so when you're preparing for that, did you do all the same things?
- 52:01[SPEAKER_02]: Did you learn French?
- 52:02[SPEAKER_02]: Were you reading books like that every single week?
- 52:04[SPEAKER_02]: Did you have her wife yell at you?
- 52:05[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 52:06[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I was almost fluent in Spanish, although you don't hear me speaking Spanish down in Cuba, but French is a Latin language.
- 52:17[SPEAKER_00]: And I also spoke a little Italian, and that's a Latin language.
- 52:21[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, you know, one of those, and I, and a little bit of Portuguese, but I've forgotten pretty much all that, but it's, it's, you know, one kind of helps with the other.
- 52:36[SPEAKER_00]: But, and I did have to act in French a couple times, not necessarily an entire part, but it did do scenes in it, and I did Dutch once, and there's Roosevelt.
- 52:47[SPEAKER_00]: I did German, as well as that bad French scene.
- 52:52[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 52:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 52:56[SPEAKER_00]: You still remember any of it?
- 52:59[SPEAKER_00]: The German known.
- 53:02[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I've said this on the show for years.
- 53:04[SPEAKER_02]: Once you stop doing a language, it's like a muscle.
- 53:08[SPEAKER_02]: Once you stop it, you just, you know, it's hard to pick up again.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_00]: Guess what I'm trying?
- 53:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm losing some of my Spanish from doing a tie and with Laura, you know, because we, you know, we go back and forth to Venice where her family's from.
- 53:27[SPEAKER_00]: So I guess mine is a little bit of,
- 53:32[SPEAKER_00]: a mix salad, you know, where sometimes Spanish will pop up in it, you know, and sentence like, oh, that's funny, you know, I look, I'll spawn you a little bit.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_02]: It's a similar language.
- 53:42[SPEAKER_02]: It's a town.
- 53:43[SPEAKER_02]: They share a lot of the same words or the origin and stuff like that.
- 53:47[SPEAKER_00]: Which you were that that they're able to learn each other's language is quicker, you know, being so close to each other as well, you know, they can go down there and use it.
- 53:58[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to ask you about one of Dan and I's favorite movies here inception.
- 54:02[SPEAKER_02]: Working with Christopher Nolan.
- 54:03[SPEAKER_02]: How was that?
- 54:05[SPEAKER_02]: And when you read that script, did you understand it?
- 54:08[SPEAKER_02]: No.
- 54:11[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_00]: Never did.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_00]: From the time I started it, till the time I finished.
- 54:17[SPEAKER_00]: Never understood it.
- 54:19[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't know where I was, what I was doing is I was just lost in space.
- 54:26[SPEAKER_02]: When you watch the movie, did you even figure it out at that point?
- 54:29[SPEAKER_02]: Because I've heard rumors of people who've worked on some of his movies.
- 54:32[SPEAKER_02]: We were like, I don't even know what it is to this day.
- 54:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I was like, well, I was so, so that really fine Irish actor that was in there.
- 54:43[SPEAKER_00]: I saw him and I go, yep, I go, let me ask you something, have you seen this?
- 54:49[SPEAKER_00]: He goes, yeah, I saw it in London.
- 54:52[SPEAKER_00]: I got him right.
- 54:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because he's English, of course he would have been out on.
- 54:56[SPEAKER_00]: He said, and I said, well, did you understand it?
- 54:59[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, I think so.
- 55:05[UNKNOWN]: All right.
- 55:07[SPEAKER_01]: I'm talking about so you're Murphy.
- 55:09[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, Jesus.
- 55:13[SPEAKER_00]: But I'll tell you this by just that, and then I saw his other movie because he invited me when it was the one where the guy goes out of space and he comes back and his daughter's like older than him, like way older than him.
- 55:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, you know, because he hasn't aged because he's interstellar.
- 55:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 55:33[SPEAKER_00]: And, which I thought was pretty weird and fascinating and I'm going, is that really be is that true?
- 55:40[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's true.
- 55:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's true.
- 55:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so if you set out from Earth at, without it's grab, near the speed of light, basically.
- 55:50[SPEAKER_01]: So 99.7% speed of light and went out for a year and came back for another year, two years would have passed for you, but five years would have passed on Earth, and then it becomes exponential.
- 55:59[SPEAKER_01]: So if you go out for ten years,
- 56:01[SPEAKER_01]: it becomes like a lot.
- 56:03[SPEAKER_01]: I think 28 years is something like 60 or 30 or I'm sorry three weeks at the speed of light could be if you're traveling literally at the speed of light would be something like
- 56:18[SPEAKER_01]: 30 years would have passed right so in only three weeks for you so it's called relative time Essentially it's crazy to think about our brains were did not evolve to Have any idea what the fuck's going on there?
- 56:29[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's impossible.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_02]: No, I watched that film too And I didn't know what was going on.
- 56:34[SPEAKER_02]: I loved it and I enjoyed it because it was so weird now there But I had the same questions of like could this ever happen and if it did and it could actually happen
- 56:48[SPEAKER_02]: what was going on mentally throughout that process, you know?
- 56:53[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I talked to him afterwards.
- 56:55[SPEAKER_00]: I said, yeah, and I said, of course, my favorite scene is when he comes back to see his, his,
- 57:04[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, his daughter's granddaughter, whatever that's older than he is, you know, I go he smile like yeah, I go I said hey I said okay beyond that I said just all all the stuff I said to you like understand all physics of this space thing
- 57:28[SPEAKER_00]: He said, no, I had some grasp of it, but no, I can't say I'm an expert on that.
- 57:35[SPEAKER_00]: And I went, whoa, how would you want it all that in a short period of time?
- 57:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 57:45[SPEAKER_01]: Well, Matt said a couple of those he did contact to, right?
- 57:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the Carl Sagan film of a book back in the day, which is not it's not they don't I don't think there's any relativity part of that, but yeah, it's it's hard for the human brain to understand.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_01]: If you if you at 99.9% speed of light, which is theoretically possible, if you traveled five years out in five years back, 225 years would have passed on earth.
- 58:09[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, dude.
- 58:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, right.
- 58:11[SPEAKER_01]: So you would be 10 years older and earth would be 230 years older, essentially 225 years always fucked up.
- 58:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's, I mean, how do you, I just, I don't know, there's no way to account for that with your, with your human brain.
- 58:22[SPEAKER_01]: No, I think.
- 58:23[SPEAKER_02]: And I was the same way with you, with the lady in the, and the bed at the end, I couldn't figure it out with that was his daughter, great grandfather, you know, who that was, great granddaughter.
- 58:31[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 58:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, I mean, but it just, I, I went to hear a guy talk where they kind of reenact in Magellan's voyage and they went, and they were like special guests when they finally arrived in the Philippines, they were like special guests of the Philippines, the government they were celebrating.
- 58:55[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what 100 anniversary was, but you know, and since Magellan, and I,
- 59:04[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought to my, and when I'm listening to this guy talking about their voyage, you know, and how difficult it was seem to kind of scary and dangerous at times, um, I couldn't help but think about those guys.
- 59:22[SPEAKER_00]: You know, taking, I am a gentleman, I don't can't even remember whether he was Portuguese working for the Spanish or he was Spanish working for the Portuguese or what Portuguese working for the Spanish.
- 59:37[SPEAKER_00]: He was Portuguese working for the Spanish.
- 59:38[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so it's like Columbus, the Italian working for the Spanish.
- 59:43[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 59:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like that.
- 59:45[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 59:46[SPEAKER_00]: And I just go, I must have been like for them.
- 59:50[SPEAKER_00]: I just can't wrap my head around it.
- 59:53[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I get kind of claustrophobic on boats and elevators.
- 1:00:00[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I like swimming, so I'll dive off and swim, but I feel freer than being on a boat.
- 1:00:06[SPEAKER_01]: Well, Magellan crossed the Pacific.
- 1:00:08[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if I'd recommend swimming that.
- 1:00:10[SPEAKER_01]: Unless you're doing it just from like, rocket to a rocket ship, you think that's not right.
- 1:00:16[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, well, yeah, I just, I can't.
- 1:00:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that one there was one it's hard to the the space is like this is a fundamental problem about filming I think space stuff is if you shot it realistically it would be unfillable because space is huge right That's what the when they it's huge and mostly dark
- 1:00:45[SPEAKER_01]: They were talking about Tom Cruise is talking about filming something up in space.
- 1:00:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's like there's I went whenever they set it at first, I was like, there's no way this will ever happen.
- 1:00:56[SPEAKER_01]: And it's not about the lack of technology.
- 1:00:58[SPEAKER_01]: It's about, there's no way it'll light it.
- 1:01:01[SPEAKER_01]: There's no, there's no possible way you could do that.
- 1:01:04[SPEAKER_01]: The depth of field you need to shoot even inside a shuttle or something like that doesn't exist.
- 1:01:10[SPEAKER_01]: It just doesn't exist on every, it's space is vast and it's dark, right?
- 1:01:15[SPEAKER_01]: So how would you, how would you ever do that?
- 1:01:17[SPEAKER_01]: That's a weird thing.
- 1:01:17[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the people that are able to film, sci-fi, and space really well are very talented people.
- 1:01:23[SPEAKER_01]: And I know they're not filming in space.
- 1:01:25[SPEAKER_01]: But to,
- 1:01:26[SPEAKER_01]: fake it to fake it to make it look like something that would because I think human beings are going to be very disappointed when they look back at the catalog of of sci-fi and then go into actual space because it's like nothing happens fast right it's so huge there's no way there's no way to move around too quickly
- 1:01:47[SPEAKER_02]: They end up killing the movie, by the way.
- 1:01:49[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, they'd have to.
- 1:01:50[SPEAKER_02]: They killed the project.
- 1:01:51[SPEAKER_01]: They'd have to.
- 1:01:52[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, honestly, those bics, I mean, just for everything you say, I, that'd be enough for me to go.
- 1:01:57[SPEAKER_00]: No, forget it.
- 1:01:58[SPEAKER_00]: There's no way to do it.
- 1:01:59[SPEAKER_00]: That's why I like to do it.
- 1:02:01[SPEAKER_01]: Some of the big spectacle stuff is fun.
- 1:02:03[SPEAKER_01]: I guess, but we're losing.
- 1:02:07[SPEAKER_01]: I think I feel like we're getting more and more spectacle and less and less story, you know what I mean?
- 1:02:13[SPEAKER_01]: Over the over the last, like 15 years or so.
- 1:02:16[SPEAKER_00]: What I'd love to see, and I'm sure people have talked about it, but nobody's really filmed it would be courtes and he has sex.
- 1:02:28[SPEAKER_02]: historical pieces are hard to pitch as you know because you've got to go into the studio.
- 1:02:33[SPEAKER_02]: Well, it would be amazing.
- 1:02:35[SPEAKER_02]: But the budget and then any any period piece down to costuming in wardrobe and all that other stuff is so expensive and so costly.
- 1:02:45[SPEAKER_02]: And then you wonder what the appetite is for it.
- 1:02:47[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it just kind of just happened essentially with the Odyssey.
- 1:02:50[SPEAKER_02]: And it was 50-50 of whether or not that was going to be a massive success or a massive failure because they had spent so much money on it.
- 1:02:59[SPEAKER_02]: Now it paid off in the end and I'm sure they're going to use that as an example when they go and pitch, you know, movies like Cortez and stuff because it's around.
- 1:03:08[SPEAKER_02]: People have kicked around an idea for a while.
- 1:03:12[SPEAKER_02]: What was the other one with Colin Feral?
- 1:03:19[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the only one in Costa China that ever did well was Gibson's mells and like, yeah, yeah, that's a that's a why I mean the fact that it did so well is crazy because it's shot completely in a native language on like on scene how do you how did he get that done?
- 1:03:38[SPEAKER_01]: I have no idea.
- 1:03:39[SPEAKER_01]: It's incredible.
- 1:03:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:03:40[SPEAKER_00]: Not what it was, and then the ending where you see the Spanish ships coming in, they don't know what they are.
- 1:03:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know what's really funny is.
- 1:03:49[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, but we do.
- 1:03:53[SPEAKER_01]: Talk about that conquest.
- 1:03:54[SPEAKER_00]: But you know, like one of my favorite stories, worst stories is the 300 Spartans.
- 1:04:06[SPEAKER_00]: And I, that book, Gates of Fire,
- 1:04:10[SPEAKER_00]: I gave to my Marine General friend.
- 1:04:12[SPEAKER_00]: Who'd never read, I said, you never read the series.
- 1:04:14[SPEAKER_00]: I know what it's about, but I'm not, I never read it.
- 1:04:17[SPEAKER_00]: I want, okay, I just want, here you go.
- 1:04:18[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, thanks.
- 1:04:20[SPEAKER_00]: And he called me, I don't know, a couple days later and he goes burned your back.
- 1:04:27[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, hey, Jerry, how you doing?
- 1:04:30[SPEAKER_00]: He said, I got to tell you so that book, whoa, he said, Margaret, Margaret woke up.
- 1:04:41[SPEAKER_00]: And I still had the light on and I'm reading that book because I can't put it down.
- 1:04:45[SPEAKER_00]: Like, oh, I don't know.
- 1:04:48[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, and she says, Jerry, what are you doing?
- 1:04:51[SPEAKER_00]: Why aren't you sleeping?
- 1:04:52[SPEAKER_00]: He said, barren jerk gave me this goddamn fucker.
- 1:04:56[SPEAKER_00]: And so good I can't put it down.
- 1:04:58[SPEAKER_00]: I can't put it down.
- 1:05:00[SPEAKER_00]: God, I'm sleepy shit.
- 1:05:02[SPEAKER_00]: I said, I said, he covered everything in there.
- 1:05:06[SPEAKER_00]: He talked about what they carried the food they need, just how they drilled.
- 1:05:11[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, there's little stuff like the guy on the end of the line at the lines, okay, the guy on the left flank was always a guy that did not have the shield.
- 1:05:29[SPEAKER_00]: on your shoulder because all the other guys were in the middle, right?
- 1:05:33[SPEAKER_00]: And then had their spirits like so sticking out from a wall of shield.
- 1:05:38[SPEAKER_00]: They like, yeah, but one guy's got a shield on the end and the other guy doesn't.
- 1:05:43[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:05:44[SPEAKER_00]: And it's always that way.
- 1:05:46[SPEAKER_00]: And they would practice.
- 1:05:52[SPEAKER_00]: They would actually think about that while they practice drills on it.
- 1:05:57[SPEAKER_00]: going, that guy is going to tend to, you know, hold back can't help it because you've got nothing protecting you over there on that end of the line.
- 1:06:10[SPEAKER_00]: So the whole line would, instead of going straight, would begin to curve like that.
- 1:06:18[SPEAKER_00]: Interesting.
- 1:06:20[SPEAKER_00]: That they, and they were aware of that.
- 1:06:23[SPEAKER_01]: Gates of Gates of Fire is really good.
- 1:06:25[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, one of that toughest motherfuckers I threw there on the line.
- 1:06:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Gates of Fire is a really good book.
- 1:06:31[SPEAKER_01]: The real story, the Battle of the Marvelous is quite a bit more interesting than the movie 300.
- 1:06:37[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's the movie 300 was a good, I thought it was good.
- 1:06:40[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's not entertaining.
- 1:06:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's very entertaining, which is what a movie supposed to be.
- 1:06:45[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't a fucking biopic, right?
- 1:06:47[SPEAKER_01]: So it did its job, it's a really good movie.
- 1:06:50[SPEAKER_01]: but the real story people should really look into because it's really interesting.
- 1:06:53[SPEAKER_01]: Same thing with
- 1:06:55[SPEAKER_01]: uh... you mentioned court has that real story is crazy to it was like uh... and it's a great book on that too like i read it years ago i don't remember the name of it but oh yeah so there's it there's it was called as check i think it yeah uh... and it's like uh... he showed up with like fifteen horses and five hundred dudes and they got a reinforcement at some point but i think the total amount of uh... troops they use was was less than thirteen hundred total to take down the entire empire
- 1:07:25[SPEAKER_00]: they enlisted all the other Indian tribes that were upset being under the Aztecs.
- 1:07:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's probably the pain of joining the Spanish.
- 1:07:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's not the story we hear these days, though, right?
- 1:07:38[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, no.
- 1:07:39[SPEAKER_00]: It was like all the Indians are against the Spanish.
- 1:07:42[SPEAKER_00]: No, that's not true.
- 1:07:44[SPEAKER_00]: He was making deals with them and he was, he was seeing, and then how he burned his own ships
- 1:07:55[SPEAKER_00]: the ships.
- 1:07:58[SPEAKER_00]: I think they still use that freight.
- 1:07:59[SPEAKER_00]: We've burned the ships behind us.
- 1:08:00[SPEAKER_00]: I think that freight still used by commanders.
- 1:08:01[SPEAKER_00]: And with that, with that Aztec book you're talking about, it was option back in the day for a TV series.
- 1:08:04[SPEAKER_02]: And ironically it was John Millis.
- 1:08:05[SPEAKER_02]: Mm, yeah, of course.
- 1:08:05[SPEAKER_02]: Of course, Millis, I will do it.
- 1:08:06[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, Johnny.
- 1:08:07[SPEAKER_02]: Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny,
- 1:08:20[SPEAKER_02]: one of the best to ever do it, and then back to what you were saying about these spectacle movies that are coming out, I think that's why everybody's kind of leaning towards documentaries, and those are doing extremely well these days.
- 1:08:30[SPEAKER_02]: Your new movie, Ronan III, the Battle of Sangen, is coming out here.
- 1:08:37[SPEAKER_02]: How did you get involved with this?
- 1:08:38[SPEAKER_02]: I know you were kind of the narrator of it, but who came to you with this story and with this film and wanted you to get involved in it?
- 1:08:48[SPEAKER_00]: It was the director, Jane, she, it was her idea.
- 1:08:54[SPEAKER_00]: And she contacted, I guess she, I don't recall exactly, but I think she, you know, got hold of my agent, you know.
- 1:09:04[SPEAKER_02]: And what did they send you the story or the footage?
- 1:09:08[SPEAKER_00]: Did they tell me the story, you know, they're not footage, but that's okay, I didn't need footage, but, you know, I read the story, I'm like, yeah, I'll do this.
- 1:09:19[SPEAKER_00]: And then you have, I have kind of attachment with the Marines anyway because I lived in South Carolina, it was like right next to Paras Island, I could hear them doing their mortar drills.
- 1:09:29[SPEAKER_00]: and what, not over the, and, and I knew all these, these, you know, jarheads and town and stuff, you know, somewhere, some were staff sergeants and what, not, and I knew a guy was a marine pilot because there was a marine air base on the north end of town and, and, and, and, and, and,
- 1:09:52[SPEAKER_00]: And then eventually ended up meeting like three or four of the brigadiers that commanded, you know, we're commanders there.
- 1:10:00[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how many graduations I went to, which are always kind of cool and colorful and you see the parents come out, you know, see their sons graduate and whatnot.
- 1:10:14[SPEAKER_00]: I, you know, went to Offsers Club, hang out with those guys, and she's a really good friend with a major general humble who lives in Kentucky right now.
- 1:10:26[SPEAKER_00]: He's from their original as is his wife, he's the one who I gave the book to him, woke up in the middle of the night, says Baroness, get on me, he's up spot, right?
- 1:10:35[SPEAKER_00]: That was him.
- 1:10:37[SPEAKER_00]: And they live in
- 1:10:42[SPEAKER_00]: They're back in Kentucky because they're from there.
- 1:10:46[SPEAKER_00]: And he, I went to his retirement, which was he was in command that in Washington DC, the mayor of the Marine barracks there.
- 1:10:59[SPEAKER_00]: What are they called in DC?
- 1:11:02[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the one in DC, yeah, um, the, uh, no, I don't know.
- 1:11:06[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, Juanico, Juanico, the, yeah, uh, Yes, Juanico, a huge amount, yeah, yeah, big call it, yeah.
- 1:11:13[SPEAKER_00]: And, um, and so he was a commander, and then that's, and then he says, he says, John, I'm retiring.
- 1:11:18[SPEAKER_00]: He said, would you like, yeah, sure.
- 1:11:22[SPEAKER_00]: So I came up for the retirement, and uh, we went out there and I wore suit, you know, and he was in his blues and, and metals and all that.
- 1:11:32[SPEAKER_00]: And there were all these different army officers and Marine officers, Navy officers, and I'm like, looking at all the uniforms and things and I said, where are the two guys in a white uniform?
- 1:11:45[SPEAKER_00]: Where are they from?
- 1:11:46[SPEAKER_00]: Are they Navy?
- 1:11:47[SPEAKER_00]: Because he says there are Filipino officers.
- 1:11:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you would have known that he says, oh, yeah, I worked with him closely over in Asia and don't come up, but you know, and so all these, and they had the marine silent drill team.
- 1:12:04[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if you guys have seen that before, you probably have wild.
- 1:12:08[SPEAKER_01]: I can't even do a regular drill in ceremony, much less without commands.
- 1:12:12[SPEAKER_00]: No commands, and they're throwing their rifles up at the same time in the air with bandets on and catching them behind.
- 1:12:20[SPEAKER_00]: I've never seen anything like it, I mean, they're magicians.
- 1:12:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's crazy.
- 1:12:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's just something, you know, and with the Marine band, and there was the big Marine monument.
- 1:12:33[SPEAKER_00]: He would be a monument.
- 1:12:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, some asshole just knocked the head off of it with a sledgehammer last week.
- 1:12:38[SPEAKER_01]: They arrested him, he said a legal immigrant, of course.
- 1:12:40[SPEAKER_00]: But where was that?
- 1:12:41[SPEAKER_00]: What base was that?
- 1:12:42[SPEAKER_00]: Monaco.
- 1:12:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's up there, yeah.
- 1:12:48[SPEAKER_01]: Because, no, no, no, it's Arlington.
- 1:12:50[SPEAKER_01]: He wouldn't be able to get up on the big one where I was.
- 1:12:52[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, this is the one in Arlington at Arlington Park in Virginia.
- 1:12:57[SPEAKER_01]: Arlington, Samachet.
- 1:12:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the one where they're planting the flag or whatever.
- 1:13:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:13:03[SPEAKER_01]: Knocked a small version of the way around.
- 1:13:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:05[SPEAKER_00]: Of the, yeah, mm-hmm.
- 1:13:08[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, don't get me started on that one, yeah.
- 1:13:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think he should be taking out the shot.
- 1:13:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's like when you try to destroy someone's history, you're trying to destroy their culture.
- 1:13:22[SPEAKER_01]: That's to me, that's a capital offense.
- 1:13:24[SPEAKER_01]: I have no problem sending that, just fire that dude into the fucking ocean somewhere.
- 1:13:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 1:13:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 1:13:31[SPEAKER_01]: Fucking, but it's, you know, what are you gonna do?
- 1:13:35[SPEAKER_01]: We live in a soft society these days, which is why it's good to see these stories of, you know, I think,
- 1:13:42[SPEAKER_01]: the broader general public can get a sense that everything is collapsing in on them.
- 1:13:46[SPEAKER_01]: I think these
- 1:13:47[SPEAKER_01]: Things like band of brothers, you know, from a biopic standpoint, even though it's a series or the Pacific, or generation kills is really good.
- 1:13:56[SPEAKER_01]: Things that are telling true stories, whether it's a rest repo was one that's documentary style and this wrote in three of the Battle of Sangha is another one.
- 1:14:06[SPEAKER_01]: To remind people that there's still some tough bastards out there that are perfectly willing to fuck people up on their behalf, should they try to encroach on what we've built here.
- 1:14:17[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I think that's a really important reminder for people not just to honor those dudes because, you know, we go out and fight because that's what we are.
- 1:14:24[SPEAKER_01]: But to remind the general public that there's a dude out there willing to fight for them, I think that is a, it's an important thing.
- 1:14:32[SPEAKER_01]: And this one's coming out on veterans day, right?
- 1:14:34[SPEAKER_01]: This year on November 11th.
- 1:14:35[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 1:14:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, which is, you know, wonderful.
- 1:14:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think, um, and Afghanistan is like,
- 1:14:47[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what to say about Afghanistan, but it's like I flash back to these old movies of the British.
- 1:14:59[SPEAKER_00]: in the fiber pass, you know, and it's like you go, oh, and you know what, and then what they're all kinds of them, you know, with the white feather, we willy winky, just, and what's
- 1:15:24[SPEAKER_00]: he was running through the town upstairs downstairs in his night count time and that's we willy winky you know that's this whole story well well then it was it's surely what's your name a little actress surely generally simple yeah she was we willy winky she was a little like mascot you know in a little kilt you know Scottish beri and and she's
- 1:15:55[SPEAKER_00]: And then you got, you know, the white feather about the guy was, it was a coward, right?
- 1:16:00[SPEAKER_00]: And he got the white feather, right?
- 1:16:02[SPEAKER_00]: And that, that old British movie.
- 1:16:03[SPEAKER_00]: And then the birds made these movies, you know, and then I want about the water, the water guy.
- 1:16:10[SPEAKER_00]: What was this name?
- 1:16:13[SPEAKER_00]: Kevin Cossner, water, the water boy that kept getting the water to him.
- 1:16:18[SPEAKER_00]: The Indian, what kept getting to the troops in the fiber pass.
- 1:16:24[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, you know, you guys, you're gonna kill yourself.
- 1:16:27[SPEAKER_02]: I know, it's just one of those weird homo-washing jeopardy and you can't see it.
- 1:16:31[SPEAKER_02]: You're going to get so good.
- 1:16:31[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to get so good.
- 1:16:33[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to get so good.
- 1:16:34[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to get so good.
- 1:16:36[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to get so good.
- 1:16:37[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to get so good.
- 1:16:37[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to get so good.
- 1:16:38[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to get so good.
- 1:16:40[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to get so good.
- 1:16:41[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to get so good.
- 1:16:43[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to get so good.
- 1:16:43[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to get so good.
- 1:16:44[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to get so good.
- 1:16:46[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to get so good.
- 1:16:46[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to get so good.
- 1:16:47[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to get so good.
- 1:16:48[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to get so good.
- 1:16:50[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to get so good.
- 1:16:52[SPEAKER_00]: the lancers, you know, the bingo lancers and all that stuff, and it was like, whoa, and it was always in that chiberpasse.
- 1:17:01[SPEAKER_00]: Well, the Russians had to come down through there to go in Afghanistan, and then they had to go back out of there.
- 1:17:10[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's a, it's a, it's a killing
- 1:17:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, it's funny White Feather meant something different for us because Carlos Hathcock, who your character was sort of based on loosely and sniper was called White Feather because he kept one of his cap when he was hunting down V Kong and P.A.V.N.
- 1:17:34[SPEAKER_01]: back of the day.
- 1:17:35[SPEAKER_01]: It's interesting.
- 1:17:36[SPEAKER_00]: I wonder why we haven't ever made it for him because it was covered in the British Army.
- 1:17:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, he said he was anything, but yeah, I wonder why I guess sniper kind of did it a little bit, but no one ever really made a movie based on his exploits.
- 1:17:51[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we have American sniper for Chris Kai.
- 1:17:53[SPEAKER_01]: We have a bunch of those style movies based on real events and whatnot, but some of the stuff that Hathcock pulled off.
- 1:18:00[SPEAKER_01]: was fucking crazy.
- 1:18:01[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, stuff, nobody's ever heard of before.
- 1:18:03[SPEAKER_01]: To be honest, like, mounting his 762 scope on a fucking 50 cow and Kentucky wendaging in on a second.
- 1:18:13[SPEAKER_01]: Took a cold bore shot and then a second shot and popped a guy, I'm like, what the fuck?
- 1:18:17[SPEAKER_01]: I've never, I can shoot pretty good.
- 1:18:19[SPEAKER_01]: I can't do that.
- 1:18:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:18:22[SPEAKER_00]: I hear this friend of Marine Gunney Jack, gunnery sergeant, and he finally retired as living down in Virginia, but he wanted to work so hard on the next Cypher movie, which Cypher 3, yes, yeah.
- 1:18:44[SPEAKER_00]: And I said, yeah, okay, well, I work in a lot of help from General Jerry Humboldt, my friend, who got to the, what are they called the.
- 1:18:58[SPEAKER_00]: Judge Advocance Corps, whatever, to milk the, yeah, the lawyer guys of the Marine Corps, whatever, and he finally got this guy, this major, and my friend Gunney Jack was like, what do they kind of have to do this?
- 1:19:11[SPEAKER_00]: I got a fucking officer said, I got a Jack.
- 1:19:14[SPEAKER_00]: Jack, be patient.
- 1:19:15[SPEAKER_00]: You know, this is all paperwork.
- 1:19:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's like you're still on active duty.
- 1:19:21[SPEAKER_00]: You're a sniper on active duty.
- 1:19:22[SPEAKER_00]: I go, you think, they're not just going to let you run off
- 1:19:28[SPEAKER_00]: I said, because you're still on act of time.
- 1:19:32[SPEAKER_00]: You're not in a reserves here.
- 1:19:35[SPEAKER_00]: So this is all got to be done.
- 1:19:36[SPEAKER_00]: Come on, you know, that shit, right?
- 1:19:38[SPEAKER_00]: And he's like, all right, I had to keep him calm.
- 1:19:42[SPEAKER_00]: But it finally got done.
- 1:19:45[SPEAKER_00]: And I let him know, and he, he,
- 1:19:49[SPEAKER_00]: So he came over and he worked with us and then boom back to back up.
- 1:19:53[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't have can stand a couple times after that I go I didn't even ask what he was doing because I know it was all you know Top secret yep, can't talk about
- 1:20:05[SPEAKER_00]: So I didn't bother asking.
- 1:20:07[SPEAKER_00]: But he would hint about stuff and let me know these things.
- 1:20:10[SPEAKER_00]: And then I said, well, you know, he's just got back.
- 1:20:13[SPEAKER_00]: But you had to have heard about this before you.
- 1:20:15[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he just got back a couple weeks ago.
- 1:20:17[SPEAKER_00]: And I mean, a few weeks ago, they wrapped this thing up.
- 1:20:20[SPEAKER_00]: I go, was a DC sniper?
- 1:20:24[SPEAKER_00]: He goes, oh, yeah.
- 1:20:27[SPEAKER_00]: And I said, yeah, I mean, I thought that thing.
- 1:20:29[SPEAKER_00]: They caught these two.
- 1:20:30[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, well,
- 1:20:32[SPEAKER_00]: Funny, you should bring that up.
- 1:20:34[SPEAKER_00]: Tom, he said, because I got what?
- 1:20:38[SPEAKER_00]: You weren't half-genetic, he goes, no, I had just gotten back.
- 1:20:44[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, and he says him, they asked me, they said, and I was, I was working with this woman FBI agent on this thing, and she was asking me,
- 1:21:03[SPEAKER_00]: And another Marine, she said, well, what do you guys think about this?
- 1:21:09[SPEAKER_00]: What are you, what are you, what are you saying?
- 1:21:13[SPEAKER_00]: And she gave them a letter that the, what did they call on the DC sniper?
- 1:21:20[SPEAKER_00]: I guess, yeah, yeah, yeah, he had written a letter to the cops.
- 1:21:24[SPEAKER_00]: You know, because you know how they like to do that.
- 1:21:28[SPEAKER_02]: Right?
- 1:21:29[SPEAKER_02]: Well, secretly, they all want to be famous or be recognized or whatever it is, but it always leads to their demise in the end.
- 1:21:36[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 1:21:37[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 1:21:38[SPEAKER_00]: And it did, in this case, but he said, so we're sitting at this table, and she's kind of walking around talking and pacing.
- 1:21:46[SPEAKER_00]: And then she gives us this letter that the guy had written, and they're both looking at it at the same time.
- 1:22:00[SPEAKER_00]: be it again, and she says, what do you think?
- 1:22:03[SPEAKER_00]: And they said, what?
- 1:22:08[SPEAKER_01]: He's black.
- 1:22:11[SPEAKER_00]: They're both other heads.
- 1:22:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he is.
- 1:22:14[SPEAKER_00]: He's also ex-military or military.
- 1:22:19[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe still active.
- 1:22:20[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, but he's military.
- 1:22:23[SPEAKER_00]: She says, you sure?
- 1:22:24[SPEAKER_00]: They go, well, there's some things that are
- 1:22:30[SPEAKER_00]: and his language.
- 1:22:33[SPEAKER_00]: And indeed he was, you know, he was an artist sergeant.
- 1:22:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:22:39[SPEAKER_00]: And they went out with her and they went to all the locations and Jack said the shot was from here.
- 1:22:45[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they got all the details of who got killed, where they were, where they were standing out there.
- 1:22:51[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he said the shot was from right here.
- 1:22:57[SPEAKER_00]: She said, yeah, he said, we got something like, I don't know, five out of six, they picked the exact location of the shot was made.
- 1:23:08[SPEAKER_00]: And they also told the woman FBI, they said, you know, they said, he's using a car as a
- 1:23:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you're not gonna get a bunch of bushes and make a hide, you know, out of that, you know, all the stuff like in the park, whatever, if you just look how open it is here, look at the angle, what the bulk of all of the bullet we shot, you did it, you know, and we know what was right through here was across the street into that filling station, where the guy, you know, where
- 1:23:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and she said, well, how would they do that?
- 1:23:54[SPEAKER_00]: I said, they said, well, you turn your car with the back end towards the target.
- 1:24:04[SPEAKER_00]: You pull out the seat and the trunk.
- 1:24:06[SPEAKER_00]: She's, and then you get in the trunk with your feet in the back seat and you can sprawl out into prone position, which is the best way to check your shot.
- 1:24:22[SPEAKER_00]: And you do it right through the keyhole, which you have made removable, almost like you would a gas cap.
- 1:24:33[SPEAKER_00]: Boom, you fire.
- 1:24:34[SPEAKER_00]: You crawl back to the front seat, your point of the opposite direction.
- 1:24:39[SPEAKER_00]: You take off that way.
- 1:24:41[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's what he did.
- 1:24:44[SPEAKER_02]: How long did it take to catch him after that?
- 1:24:47[SPEAKER_00]: Wasn't too long.
- 1:24:50[SPEAKER_00]: And what were they just looking for that car when he did get caught somebody had seen him like in a like a service station or yeah, yeah, they saw you know picking up snacks and cigarettes or whatever, you know, that kind of stuff right and coming back out to his car or something and they see him and in the little kid and that
- 1:25:16[SPEAKER_00]: Wait a minute.
- 1:25:16[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 1:25:17[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they just got suspicious as they call them.
- 1:25:19[SPEAKER_00]: Police, you can go.
- 1:25:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:25:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that it's really interesting.
- 1:25:25[SPEAKER_01]: That isn't something that we do necessarily.
- 1:25:29[SPEAKER_01]: It's something that the agency's done back in the day.
- 1:25:33[SPEAKER_01]: But that particular technique actually came from the PRA, the provisional Irish Republican Army.
- 1:25:39[SPEAKER_01]: They used to do that.
- 1:25:40[SPEAKER_01]: for suburban assassinations quite a bit.
- 1:25:45[SPEAKER_01]: And it's easy to do, frankly, would be more difficult these days because vehicles have, they're all tricked out with all this bullshit on them.
- 1:25:53[SPEAKER_01]: But when it was just steel with stuff plugged into it, you can remove the keyhole and cut.
- 1:25:58[SPEAKER_01]: I believe he cut a pain above where the keyhole would be on the deck lid that he could remove out and you could have the scope sitting on top with the barrel at the bottom.
- 1:26:10[SPEAKER_01]: like you don't even need a any kind of complicated flash hider or suppressor on there because you the report directs back into the vehicle pretty much entirely so unless you you might see some gas come out of the end but that's only if you're like right there looking at it from a side profile it's not dumb
- 1:26:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's certainly not done.
- 1:26:29[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, what do you feel like five people I think, right?
- 1:26:32[SPEAKER_02]: I don't remember what it was a lot.
- 1:26:35[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:26:35[SPEAKER_00]: It might have been six, but it could have been more than that.
- 1:26:38[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure, but yeah, we have everybody with, I think it's 16.
- 1:26:44[SPEAKER_00]: Whoa, 16.
- 1:26:45[SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember that.
- 1:26:46[SPEAKER_01]: It's 16 dead and eight others wounded in a 10 month span.
- 1:26:52[SPEAKER_01]: Wow, I didn't remember it being them.
- 1:26:55[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't either, man.
- 1:26:56[SPEAKER_00]: I would have said five or six, that's a wild story.
- 1:27:02[SPEAKER_00]: But that was going to be jack, right?
- 1:27:03[SPEAKER_00]: Like, he comes back.
- 1:27:05[SPEAKER_00]: He got a better than Afghanistan.
- 1:27:07[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 1:27:07[SPEAKER_00]: I go, what is your wife going?
- 1:27:09[SPEAKER_00]: She's going to Afghanistan.
- 1:27:11[SPEAKER_00]: Why?
- 1:27:11[SPEAKER_00]: You guys just got married.
- 1:27:12[SPEAKER_00]: He goes like, yeah, and she just got to go to job.
- 1:27:15[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going, woo.
- 1:27:17[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I've never met her because I didn't make it to the wedding or anything, but I like well, where do you guys live?
- 1:27:27[SPEAKER_00]: Because I don't change sound.
- 1:27:30[SPEAKER_00]: I go, change sound Virginia.
- 1:27:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah Well, that's a good little hump from DC.
- 1:27:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 1:27:40[SPEAKER_00]: or were you were before, you know, a cute child or whatever.
- 1:27:45[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, he says, yeah, I said, you know, I did this movie about the CIA.
- 1:27:54[SPEAKER_00]: And the guy who was my connection, you know, had worked South America and Central America and spoke fluent Spanish and Portuguese.
- 1:28:08[SPEAKER_00]: And he, when we had our first meeting at the CIA, there in Washington, which you know where that is, I said, um, he gets a thing on his inner office email and he goes, hey, you know girl name, and I go, yeah, yeah, he's from college.
- 1:28:31[SPEAKER_00]: She was the best friends with my girlfriend in college
- 1:28:38[SPEAKER_00]: There might have been room mates or at least in the same dormitory, yeah, he goes, well, she's here, I go, well, she's here, I go, she worked, yeah, he's just got me on the inner office, I go, kind of they know I'm here because we know everything.
- 1:28:58[SPEAKER_00]: That's why I don't know everything about me.
- 1:29:01[SPEAKER_00]: You do because you had whatever or somebody did it for you to run down on me before I was allowed to come in here and blah, blah, blah, blah with you and it goes, yeah, yeah, yeah, true.
- 1:29:12[SPEAKER_00]: He goes, anyway, she's on her way over here.
- 1:29:14[SPEAKER_00]: Is it okay?
- 1:29:15[SPEAKER_00]: I should show her, I'd love to see her.
- 1:29:18[SPEAKER_00]: I'd get used from a Webster girl in St. Louis, and he goes, yeah, good.
- 1:29:23[SPEAKER_00]: I go, well, yeah, I knew we're at the University of Missouri,
- 1:29:28[SPEAKER_00]: And she, she's there and I go, I mean it was weird and I first and I asked her go, I said, how many languages do you speak?
- 1:29:40[SPEAKER_00]: She said two and I said, what are they?
- 1:29:43[SPEAKER_00]: And she said Arabic and
- 1:29:51[SPEAKER_00]: You work.
- 1:29:52[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, she said, no, not in the field anymore.
- 1:29:57[SPEAKER_00]: And nor is my husband.
- 1:29:59[SPEAKER_00]: We decided we wanted to have kids and we both work here now.
- 1:30:05[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:30:05[SPEAKER_00]: I won't ask any more questions.
- 1:30:07[SPEAKER_00]: But I said, have you seen my old girlfriend Diane of using, she goes, oh, yeah, every now and then, yeah, we can actually hook up.
- 1:30:14[SPEAKER_00]: Please tell her, send a low and wish her all the best.
- 1:30:19[SPEAKER_02]: it was kind of weird.
- 1:30:22[SPEAKER_02]: That I've had.
- 1:30:24[SPEAKER_02]: And then I thought we're gonna eat you have.
- 1:30:25[SPEAKER_02]: Go need you.
- 1:30:26[SPEAKER_02]: Go need you.
- 1:30:26[SPEAKER_00]: Go need you.
- 1:30:27[SPEAKER_00]: Go need you.
- 1:30:27[SPEAKER_00]: Go need you.
- 1:30:28[SPEAKER_00]: Go need you.
- 1:30:30[SPEAKER_00]: Go need you.
- 1:30:30[SPEAKER_00]: Go need you.
- 1:30:30[SPEAKER_00]: Go need you.
- 1:30:32[SPEAKER_00]: Go need you.
- 1:30:32[SPEAKER_00]: Go need you.
- 1:30:32[SPEAKER_00]: Go need you.
- 1:30:33[SPEAKER_00]: Go need you.
- 1:30:33[SPEAKER_00]: Go need you.
- 1:30:37[SPEAKER_00]: Go need you.
- 1:30:37[SPEAKER_02]: Go need you.
- 1:30:38[SPEAKER_02]: Go need you.
- 1:30:39[SPEAKER_02]: Go need you.
- 1:30:39[SPEAKER_02]: Go need you.
- 1:30:42[SPEAKER_02]: It's just like, this is what you do for a living and I respect it.
- 1:30:45[SPEAKER_02]: You can't talk so much about it.
- 1:30:47[SPEAKER_02]: No more questions.
- 1:30:48[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:30:49[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:30:50[SPEAKER_02]: We'll look.
- 1:30:51[SPEAKER_02]: The movie, Ronan III, will be out on Veterans Day, the battle for saying Apple.
- 1:30:57[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to be an Apple TV.
- 1:30:58[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to be on Amazon Prime.
- 1:31:00[SPEAKER_02]: Apple TV is broken into three's here.
- 1:31:04[SPEAKER_02]: So there's going to be three, 54 minute episodes that you narrated.
- 1:31:08[SPEAKER_02]: Now's the point in the show.
- 1:31:09[SPEAKER_02]: We get to the drinking bro of the week, which is someone who has inspired you or helps you become the person you are today, who would you like to give the drinking bro the week, too?
- 1:31:19[SPEAKER_02]: Drinking bro the week.
- 1:31:22[SPEAKER_02]: Who has inspired you the most over your life?
- 1:31:24[SPEAKER_02]: Who inspired you to become an actor, actually?
- 1:31:29[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's an interesting story because the first acting I did was in Spanish and it was in the advanced Spanish class in high school.
- 1:31:40[SPEAKER_01]: You were pretended to know what you were doing there.
- 1:31:45[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I went up, and he said you're all going to be in the play.
- 1:31:51[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody in this class is going to be in the play and blah, blah, blah, and I went out play.
- 1:31:58[SPEAKER_00]: Whoa, what is he talking about?
- 1:32:00[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not doing a goddamn play.
- 1:32:01[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus, and I'm now I'm getting all nervous and sweaty, and then the bell rings.
- 1:32:10[SPEAKER_00]: And he goes, okay, that's it.
- 1:32:11[SPEAKER_00]: I'll see you tomorrow or whenever, you know,
- 1:32:16[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I get it.
- 1:32:16[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I get it in a math class next back.
- 1:32:18[SPEAKER_00]: I get it.
- 1:32:20[SPEAKER_00]: Compromise the school, they.
- 1:32:23[SPEAKER_00]: Compromise the senior, the professor.
- 1:32:27[SPEAKER_00]: Not my point of view is drama.
- 1:32:32[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, Thomas.
- 1:32:35[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, but I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don
- 1:32:55[SPEAKER_02]: God, I don't know.
- 1:32:56[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus.
- 1:32:58[SPEAKER_00]: What is our audience?
- 1:32:59[SPEAKER_00]: He goes, well, ask your parents to come.
- 1:33:02[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, God, no, no.
- 1:33:04[SPEAKER_02]: No way, that's going to happen.
- 1:33:06[SPEAKER_00]: And he goes, well, yeah, there's a, he is pretty good number of Hispanics that live in this area of Chicago.
- 1:33:13[SPEAKER_00]: And I said, you hold on, hold on.
- 1:33:25[SPEAKER_02]: What's the place, of course?
- 1:33:27[SPEAKER_02]: I had no, what if we make mistakes, you go, well, that's the theater, Tomas.
- 1:33:32[SPEAKER_00]: I thought it was a problem.
- 1:33:34[SPEAKER_00]: You never did it because you have to do it everybody in the band's class has to do it.
- 1:33:37[SPEAKER_00]: That's it, period.
- 1:33:39[SPEAKER_00]: So that was my first action.
- 1:33:42[SPEAKER_00]: And a play called Blood Weddings.
- 1:33:43[SPEAKER_00]: That was the song, Grace, by Federico Garcia-Lorca.
- 1:33:47[SPEAKER_00]: And what was the season name?
- 1:33:51[SPEAKER_00]: Who was shot down in a firing squad by the fascist during the Spanish Civil War?
- 1:33:57[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, I think they shot him because he wrote that play.
- 1:34:06[SPEAKER_00]: You think so was the play not great?
- 1:34:10[SPEAKER_00]: I was scared to death, which I had to go out there alone and do a monologue because I'm the mayor of the town, and I also had to welcome the audience to the play, but I thought to Rico Garcia-Laucca and I introduced myself as the mayor of the town, and this is our show to the judge.
- 1:34:30[SPEAKER_00]: There's no other actor to talk to.
- 1:34:31[SPEAKER_00]: I'm alone with all these, you know, yeah.
- 1:34:36[SPEAKER_00]: I died a thousand deaths.
- 1:34:38[SPEAKER_00]: I said never again, never again, never again, never again.
- 1:34:41[SPEAKER_00]: Then I was in college.
- 1:34:42[SPEAKER_00]: I was laying in there and I said, my roommate, sophomore year at University of Missouri, I'm laying in there and I hear him.
- 1:34:49[SPEAKER_00]: And he's having a smoke over there.
- 1:34:52[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, listen to the radio with the University radio station on there and they go, there will be an audition tomorrow at the University Theater for a play called.
- 1:35:07[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, who's a Fred Virginia wolf?
- 1:35:10[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:35:11[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:35:12[SPEAKER_00]: I know that.
- 1:35:12[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you know, I saw, I mean, the movie is all the movie, and I know that, but, I mean, you know, and I went and I did the magician.
- 1:35:22[SPEAKER_00]: I go, there's only four characters in this play.
- 1:35:25[SPEAKER_00]: And it is four hours long with three intermissions, and you can't cut a single line.
- 1:35:36[SPEAKER_00]: because the playwright had that in his royalties, agreement, interesting.
- 1:35:42[SPEAKER_00]: He actually got away, but then it's probably a good thing because it's brilliant.
- 1:35:46[SPEAKER_00]: I went to see it here in Florida, not too long ago, and we were sitting up in front row right there.
- 1:35:52[SPEAKER_00]: I said, I feel like I'm back in this play.
- 1:35:53[SPEAKER_00]: I'm in the front row.
- 1:35:55[SPEAKER_00]: My feet were the carpet and on the stage and carpet of the scene.
- 1:36:01[SPEAKER_00]: Beliving room, and it was great.
- 1:36:03[SPEAKER_00]: Was actors at a super job.
- 1:36:06[SPEAKER_02]: That's amazing.
- 1:36:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:36:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:36:09[SPEAKER_00]: I said, this was fun seeing this.
- 1:36:11[SPEAKER_00]: I'm glad you got to see it, you know, particularly as not as a movie, but as a play.
- 1:36:16[SPEAKER_00]: Because it is pretty awesome.
- 1:36:19[SPEAKER_02]: Well, we're grateful that we got to have you on the show today.
- 1:36:23[SPEAKER_02]: And your career in your own words has been super awesome.
- 1:36:27[SPEAKER_02]: And it's been amazing to watch from start to finish.
- 1:36:32[SPEAKER_02]: And you're still going.
- 1:36:34[SPEAKER_02]: You got another sniper movie.
- 1:36:37[SPEAKER_02]: You just wrap there that came out.
- 1:36:40[SPEAKER_02]: How many more of those you want to do?
- 1:36:43[SPEAKER_02]: That I can't.
- 1:36:44[SPEAKER_02]: I'm dead.
- 1:36:45[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:36:46[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, spoiler alert spoiler alert.
- 1:36:49[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, Tom.
- 1:36:50[SPEAKER_02]: We say spoiler alert in a bit.
- 1:36:52[SPEAKER_02]: All right, so you're dead.
- 1:36:53[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 1:36:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:36:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:36:56[SPEAKER_00]: You know what?
- 1:36:57[SPEAKER_00]: They probably good.
- 1:36:58[SPEAKER_00]: I should just go.
- 1:37:00[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 1:37:01[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:37:02[SPEAKER_02]: You back into movies here for the next hundred years.
- 1:37:05[SPEAKER_02]: You're fine.
- 1:37:06[SPEAKER_00]: You're fine.
- 1:37:06[SPEAKER_02]: It was time.
