- 1:19Speaker 1: my first big break. Last weekend, I received an incredible
- 1:24Speaker 1: honor as I was inducted into the Syracuse Baseball Wall
- 1:28Speaker 1: of Fame. I attended Syracuse University dreaming of a career
- 1:32Speaker 1: in sports broadcasting, and the most significant break of my
- 1:35Speaker 1: career was when the late Tech Simone and his son
- 1:39Speaker 1: John hired me to be the voice of the Triple
- 1:42Speaker 1: A Syracuse Chiefs. I was a kid, I was twenty
- 1:46Speaker 1: one years old and it was about a month before
- 1:49Speaker 1: college graduation. Everybody needs somebody to believe in them, and
- 1:54Speaker 1: I will always be grateful that the Simones believed in me.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I have no idea how my care would have turned
- 2:00Speaker 1: out if not for that opportunity. So as much as
- 2:05Speaker 1: I am honored to be on the Wall of Fame,
- 2:07Speaker 1: I am particularly grateful for the people that helped put
- 2:11Speaker 1: me on the path to getting there. Now, let's get
- 2:15Speaker 1: to football. One of the most intriguing undrafted rookies on
- 2:19Speaker 1: the Bengals roster is offensive lineman Seth McLaughlin. He started
- 2:23Speaker 1: twenty five games at Alabama, including a National championship game,
- 2:28Speaker 1: before transferring to Ohio State last year, where he won
- 2:31Speaker 1: the Remington Trophy as the best center in college football.
- 2:35Speaker 1: But at a Tuesday practice before the Buckey's eleventh game,
- 2:39Speaker 1: Seth tore as achilles, causing him to miss the rest
- 2:43Speaker 1: of the season and go undrafted. He signed with the
- 2:46Speaker 1: Bengals shortly after the draft as a free agent. With
- 2:50Speaker 1: Ted Garris entering the final year of his contract at
- 2:53Speaker 1: age thirty two, there could be a need at center
- 2:56Speaker 1: as soon as next year, and McLaughlin could put potentially
- 3:00Speaker 1: be in the mix if Ted's not back. Seth's completed
- 3:05Speaker 1: rehab and started practicing, and I caught up with him
- 3:08Speaker 1: this week. Seth, it sounds like a strong possibility that
- 3:12Speaker 1: you will play on Monday night in the Washington game.
- 3:15Speaker 1: It would be almost nine months to the day since
- 3:17Speaker 1: you suffered your torn achilles last year at Ohio State.
- 3:20Speaker 1: How close to normal do you feel at this point?
- 3:24Speaker 2: Yeah, each day I'm getting closer. I don't know if
- 3:27Speaker 2: I'm percent back yet, but I think I'm getting close.
- 3:31Speaker 1: When the Bengals signed you, I thought that maybe it
- 3:34Speaker 1: would be kind of a red shirt ear situation where
- 3:37Speaker 1: you were learning and rehabbing and getting ready for the
- 3:41Speaker 1: following year, but you seem determined to try to play
- 3:44Speaker 1: this year if you can.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:45Speaker 2: I mean, I'm a competitor. I want to get out
- 3:47Speaker 2: there as soon as I can, and I don't like
- 3:49Speaker 2: sitting on the sidelines and not helping a team win.
- 3:52Speaker 2: So I'm trying to do everything in my power to
- 3:54Speaker 2: help the team win this year, in whatever capacity that
- 3:56Speaker 2: is that the team thinks.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Achilles injuries seem like they're so random. We see it
- 4:02Speaker 1: in basketball where a guy just plants his foot and
- 4:04Speaker 1: it happens. How did it happen to you?
- 4:06Speaker 2: Yeah, it was just a scout period in the middle
- 4:08Speaker 2: of practice, stepping my right just trying to get the
- 4:11Speaker 2: scout team noseguard out of the A gap, and my
- 4:13Speaker 2: heel just dropped and it popped, and h it was
- 4:15Speaker 2: kind of just random.
- 4:17Speaker 4: How gruesome.
- 4:18Speaker 2: It didn't really hurt. Surprisingly, it was kind of just scary.
- 4:21Speaker 2: I well, I just popped up and I thought my
- 4:23Speaker 2: guard had stepped on me. And then I went to,
- 4:25Speaker 2: you know, walk and something felt off. And you know,
- 4:28Speaker 2: after seeing like the Aaron Rodgers injury, and I was like,
- 4:30Speaker 2: that's exactly how that looked, is exactly how this felt.
- 4:34Speaker 2: So at that point in time, I knew exactly what
- 4:37Speaker 2: had happened.
- 4:38Speaker 1: We're visiting the Bengals center Seth McLaughlin. You took part
- 4:41Speaker 1: in one on one pass rushing drills this week, got
- 4:44Speaker 1: matched up against McKinley Jackson, who's three point thirty and
- 4:47Speaker 1: strong as an ox. He tried to bull rush you,
- 4:50Speaker 1: and you held your ground just fine. Did that convince
- 4:53Speaker 1: you in your own mind that your achilles is fine
- 4:56Speaker 1: and you're good to go?
- 4:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:57Speaker 2: It was definitely a test that I was look and
- 5:00Speaker 2: forward to whenever that first big bull rush was gonna
- 5:02Speaker 2: come and seen how it reacted. And you know, it
- 5:05Speaker 2: wasn't even like a thought in my mind of like,
- 5:07Speaker 2: oh be careful here, just it felt natural.
- 5:09Speaker 5: It felt good to some on bull rush.
- 5:12Speaker 1: You suffered that injury in late November before Ohio State's
- 5:16Speaker 1: eleventh game of the season, and you still won the
- 5:18Speaker 1: Rimington Trophy as the best center in college football. It's
- 5:21Speaker 1: named for a former Bengal, Dave Remington. What did the
- 5:24Speaker 1: award mean to you in light of the circumstances.
- 5:27Speaker 5: Yeah, it was a huge honor.
- 5:30Speaker 2: At mid season, I was already you first team All
- 5:33Speaker 2: American and all these mid season awards. So I think
- 5:35Speaker 2: my ten games of play deserved to win the award,
- 5:38Speaker 2: and it's cool that they still gave it, gave it
- 5:41Speaker 2: to me after not playing the final two regular season games,
- 5:45Speaker 2: but it's a huge honor. It was a testament to
- 5:47Speaker 2: all the work I put in that offseason, you know,
- 5:49Speaker 2: trying to rebound a narrative that had already been built
- 5:52Speaker 2: on me, and I got to.
- 5:54Speaker 5: Prove who I was as a player.
- 5:56Speaker 1: It happened before the Indiana game the next week was
- 5:59Speaker 1: miss again. How difficult was that to be a Buck
- 6:02Speaker 1: guy for one year and not to play in the game.
- 6:06Speaker 2: One of the biggest games I was looking forward to
- 6:08Speaker 2: was playing in that game, especially, you know, kind of
- 6:10Speaker 2: after a Rose Bowl loss to at Alabama to Michigan
- 6:13Speaker 2: that year and I kind of wanted to go out.
- 6:16Speaker 2: That was like the last redeeming moment that I, you know,
- 6:18Speaker 2: was looking forward to, having didn't get to play in it.
- 6:20Speaker 2: You know, it's thinks that that game went the way
- 6:22Speaker 2: it did, but I think we we redeemed ourselves in
- 6:25Speaker 2: the in the playoffs, and you know, those rings will last.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Forever, no question about that. So you spent one year
- 6:30Speaker 1: in Ohio State, the previous four at Alabama. What do
- 6:33Speaker 1: you consider yourself a former Buck Guy, a former Crimson Tide?
- 6:37Speaker 4: What are you?
- 6:38Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a that's a loaded question because there's a
- 6:41Speaker 2: lot of emotions that go into that. I got two
- 6:43Speaker 2: degrees from Alabama. I love the University of Alabama, you know,
- 6:47Speaker 2: but I really made a name for myself in a
- 6:48Speaker 2: legacy for myself at Ohio State. With with all the
- 6:52Speaker 2: things that I did my last year, I mean Alabama,
- 6:55Speaker 2: I'd still been a part of a national championship team.
- 6:57Speaker 2: I'd won three SEC championship starting two of those. Have
- 7:01Speaker 2: a lot of hardware and a lot of good feelings
- 7:03Speaker 2: from my time there. But I think I really cemented
- 7:06Speaker 2: myself as a Buckeye the last year.
- 7:08Speaker 1: You also started in a college football playoff win over
- 7:10Speaker 1: the University of Cincinnati. That game has not remembered so
- 7:13Speaker 1: finally here, but that was one of the first starts
- 7:15Speaker 1: of your college career.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Yeah, that was my second start.
- 7:19Speaker 2: That was an awesome experience, you know, playing in at
- 7:21Speaker 2: and T Stadium.
- 7:23Speaker 3: A lot of.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Nerves going into that game, just you know, after that
- 7:27Speaker 2: first after my first start, I think I got a
- 7:29Speaker 2: lot of confidence, but you know, going into a playoff
- 7:31Speaker 2: game when you didn't really expect to play the whole year,
- 7:35Speaker 2: was definitely exciting opportunity played well, We ran the ball
- 7:39Speaker 2: incredibly well. That game kept it out of you know,
- 7:42Speaker 2: sass Gardner's hands on the outside.
- 7:44Speaker 5: So that's definitely a really fond memory for me.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Your memory is right on the money. You guys ran
- 7:48Speaker 1: for more than three hundred yards in that game. If
- 7:50Speaker 1: not for your injury last year, you surely would have
- 7:53Speaker 1: been drafted. After the draft, ESPN rank you as the
- 7:56Speaker 1: best available player still on the board. In a sense,
- 8:00Speaker 1: was it a bit of a silver lining? I know
- 8:03Speaker 1: you would have loved to be drafted, but because of that,
- 8:05Speaker 1: you were able to choose a team where you know
- 8:08Speaker 1: that there could be an opportunity in the relatively near future.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:12Speaker 5: God has a God has a way of doing things,
- 8:15Speaker 5: you know.
- 8:15Speaker 2: I definitely went into I went into day two expecting
- 8:18Speaker 2: that I might get picked up by somebody. Went to
- 8:20Speaker 2: day three pretty confident I was going to get drafted
- 8:23Speaker 2: and not sure what happened. But you know, God's got
- 8:25Speaker 2: his plan and I'm on his timing and whatever that entails.
- 8:30Speaker 2: You know, he he led me to Ohio State when
- 8:33Speaker 2: I earned the transfer portal. I never really thought about
- 8:35Speaker 2: going to Ohio State in the first place, and you know,
- 8:37Speaker 2: he closed all the doors that I thought that I
- 8:39Speaker 2: wanted to go down and opened up Ohio State, which
- 8:42Speaker 2: I didn't even know was an option. And it's kind
- 8:43Speaker 2: of the same thing with the Bengals. You know, I
- 8:46Speaker 2: didn't really think of, like, oh, the Bengals, it'd be
- 8:50Speaker 2: a great opportunity.
- 8:50Speaker 5: I didn't really realize how how good of an opportunity
- 8:53Speaker 5: it was.
- 8:53Speaker 2: And uh, to learn and be in such a great
- 8:56Speaker 2: offense and learn from these coaches who are incredible at
- 8:58Speaker 2: what they do.
- 9:00Speaker 5: So I'm happy with with how it turned out.
- 9:02Speaker 2: And it's just another thing for me to overcome, and
- 9:05Speaker 2: you know, I'm fine with that.
- 9:06Speaker 5: I've I've done it a.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Few times in my career and I'm trying to do
- 9:10Speaker 2: it again.
- 9:10Speaker 1: The starting center here is Ted karras ten year VET captain,
- 9:14Speaker 1: started every game at center the last three years here.
- 9:16Speaker 1: What if anything have you learned from Ted?
- 9:19Speaker 2: Yeah, Ted's a super intense guy. You know, He's taken
- 9:21Speaker 2: notes on literally everything that's said. It's just the level
- 9:25Speaker 2: of detail that it takes to play at this level.
- 9:27Speaker 2: I think I've picked up from him early on, and
- 9:29Speaker 2: I'm you know, i'd be excited to learn from him
- 9:32Speaker 2: in the season, how he game plans and stuff, because
- 9:33Speaker 2: I had to be invaluable after all the guys that
- 9:35Speaker 2: he's been around and kind of how.
- 9:38Speaker 5: He's morphed into the player he is.
- 9:40Speaker 2: It'd be an awesome, you know, honor to learn from
- 9:42Speaker 2: him the rest of the season and you know, just
- 9:44Speaker 2: keep working at getting back from this injury and and
- 9:47Speaker 2: start playing really good football.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Ted of course has the sense he hat all of
- 9:52Speaker 1: the proceeds go to charity. You did something similar at
- 9:56Speaker 1: Ohio State, correctly.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I mid run the den ball hats, but that
- 10:00Speaker 2: work out for uh, for this organization. So I'll definitely,
- 10:06Speaker 2: you know, do something once I'm more established. And that's
- 10:09Speaker 2: one of my main things. I love giving back and
- 10:11Speaker 2: I feel like that's kind of why we play the game,
- 10:13Speaker 2: is to help others, and it's not just an entertainment.
- 10:15Speaker 2: It's there's a duty to the community that I, you know,
- 10:18Speaker 2: feel strongly about. So, yeah, I'm trying to work to
- 10:22Speaker 2: the point where i'm you know, hopefully I'm good enough
- 10:25Speaker 2: where I can have enough reach to help others.
- 10:28Speaker 4: Appreciate your time.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Look forward to seeing you in action, whether it's Monday
- 10:31Speaker 1: night or shortly after that.
- 10:33Speaker 4: Thanks so much, Seth, Yeah, thank you.
- 10:35Speaker 1: It seems like there's an undrafted free agent rookie every
- 10:38Speaker 1: year that winds up making a significant impact, and last
- 10:42Speaker 1: year there were several. Ryan Rico said franchise punting records,
- 10:46Speaker 1: Muma johng Meta played in every game and was a
- 10:49Speaker 1: major contributor on special teams, and Cam Grandy started six
- 10:54Speaker 1: games as a second tight end. We'll see if Seth
- 10:57Speaker 1: McLaughlin or another undrafted rookie winds up doing something similar
- 11:02Speaker 1: this year. On Wednesday of this week, an interesting group
- 11:07Speaker 1: watched the Bengals practice from the sideline. They were members
- 11:10Speaker 1: of the Cincinnati Reds, including Nick Martinez, Emilio Pagan, Matt McClain,
- 11:16Speaker 1: and Brent Sudor. It was especially meaningful for Suitor, who
- 11:21Speaker 1: attended Moller High School and lives in Cincinnati year round.
- 11:26Speaker 1: All right, as a Cincinnati kid, Is this cool for you?
- 11:30Speaker 3: It is? That's an understaving for sure. This is so
- 11:32Speaker 3: cool week.
- 11:33Speaker 6: My wife and the kids and I came into the
- 11:35Speaker 6: public practice a couple of weeks ago, an absolute blast,
- 11:39Speaker 6: But this is next level. We are you know, literally
- 11:41Speaker 6: it's standing shoulders shoulder of all the all the studs
- 11:43Speaker 6: out there.
- 11:44Speaker 3: So this is Jiam come true for Bengals fan.
- 11:46Speaker 6: I've been a Bengals fan since I moved here in
- 11:48Speaker 6: second grade, so this is definitely I'm pinching myself today.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Professional athletes recognize greatness and other professional athletes, which your
- 11:57Speaker 1: view of Burrough, Chase, etc.
- 11:59Speaker 6: Just like you said, great some of the best players
- 12:01Speaker 6: in the league. Maybe it'll they'll go down to some
- 12:03Speaker 6: of the best players at the position and in the
- 12:05Speaker 6: history of the game. So such an exciting time to
- 12:07Speaker 6: be a Bengals fan to watch this greatness kind of
- 12:09Speaker 6: unfold every every Sunday. These guys are signed, committed to
- 12:13Speaker 6: this city, committed to this franchise for the years to come.
- 12:16Speaker 6: And I'm same thing. I'm pinching myself just getting to
- 12:19Speaker 6: watch these guys in the offseason. I always love when
- 12:22Speaker 6: football season comes around. It's so fun to watch these
- 12:25Speaker 6: guys compete. It's a great sport just going, you know,
- 12:28Speaker 6: every play, max effort, toe to toe. It's kind of
- 12:31Speaker 6: like baseball where every pitch matters like crazy that everyone's
- 12:34Speaker 6: fighting for the life. But it's like eleven guys doing
- 12:36Speaker 6: instead of three, you know, every play.
- 12:38Speaker 3: So it's a really cool sport.
- 12:39Speaker 6: And it always reminds me of the offseason, which is
- 12:42Speaker 6: just a great time for all, you know, all athletes
- 12:44Speaker 6: to kind of rejuvenate. So it's it's I love Bengals football,
- 12:47Speaker 6: and I love that Zach Taylor invited us out here.
- 12:50Speaker 3: We're so appreciative.
- 12:51Speaker 1: You've got about twelve players here. It looks like, how
- 12:53Speaker 1: did that come about?
- 12:55Speaker 3: We got a.
- 12:55Speaker 6: Text yesterday from Jim Are kind of our court players,
- 12:58Speaker 6: liaison coordinator sent a Texic, Hey, Zach Taylor is inviting
- 13:03Speaker 6: us for the kind of a player's only, like a
- 13:05Speaker 6: VIP access to the practice.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Anyone up? And I said, yeah, it's.
- 13:09Speaker 6: The Pope Catholic And I said, I'm going, babe, I'll
- 13:12Speaker 6: wake up with the kids.
- 13:14Speaker 3: Just give me this hour, you know.
- 13:15Speaker 6: So I was really really excited to jump on this opportunity.
- 13:18Speaker 6: And yeah, opportunity of a lifetime for Cincinnati fan, Cincinnati
- 13:21Speaker 6: kid watching Bengals practice like this is awesome.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Did you come to games as a kid, and if so,
- 13:27Speaker 1: any specific memories.
- 13:28Speaker 3: I sure did some great games.
- 13:31Speaker 6: Unfortunately, I was there at the playoff game when Carson
- 13:32Speaker 6: Palmer tours towards knee up. That was a big I've
- 13:35Speaker 6: never seen air go out of a stadium like that,
- 13:37Speaker 6: so I definitely remember that. But I was there the game.
- 13:40Speaker 6: What's his name did that backflip in the Simpson room.
- 13:43Speaker 6: Simpson did the backflip. That was amazing. I was there
- 13:46Speaker 6: Burrows almost perfect game against the Ravens a couple of
- 13:48Speaker 6: years ago, So I've been in some really really cool moments.
- 13:51Speaker 6: I don't think I was able to get to a
- 13:53Speaker 6: game last year, but two years ago, three years ago.
- 13:56Speaker 6: My wife at season tickets from like fourteen to nineteen,
- 13:59Speaker 6: so I was there all the time those years. So
- 14:01Speaker 6: a lot of good memories of pay Corps.
- 14:03Speaker 4: It was.
- 14:03Speaker 3: It's a great place.
- 14:04Speaker 1: What was your Super Bowl experience in twenty twenty one?
- 14:07Speaker 3: Did you watch with friends?
- 14:08Speaker 4: Family?
- 14:08Speaker 3: What? How did you watch?
- 14:09Speaker 6: Yeah, we had a kind of a family and friends
- 14:12Speaker 6: party every round of the playoffs at our house, and
- 14:14Speaker 6: then we just kept it going. We thought about, you know,
- 14:16Speaker 6: last minute, buying some flights and getting out there for
- 14:18Speaker 6: the game, but decided against it. We you know, we
- 14:21Speaker 6: had two boys at the time, so we instead we
- 14:22Speaker 6: just posted kind of did the same thing had family
- 14:25Speaker 6: and friends over at our house and it was a
- 14:27Speaker 6: great game. Unfortunately we didn't, you know, come out on top,
- 14:29Speaker 6: but what a fun run that was. Memories for a
- 14:32Speaker 6: lifetime for sure.
- 14:33Speaker 1: As we have this conversation, the Reds are two games
- 14:35Speaker 1: out of the final wildcard spot. The team has obviously
- 14:37Speaker 1: built up a great young nucleus. It seems realistic to
- 14:41Speaker 1: me that both of these franchises could have great periods
- 14:45Speaker 1: coming in the next five to six years.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I absolutely agree.
- 14:48Speaker 6: You know, obviously, with the Bengals signing these great players
- 14:51Speaker 6: to long term deals, and then with us, we got
- 14:54Speaker 6: you know, Ellie locked up for four or five more years.
- 14:56Speaker 6: Man McLain's locked up for a bunch of years. We
- 14:58Speaker 6: got you know, Abbid Lodolo Undergreen. These guys are here
- 15:01Speaker 6: with these guys are Reds for years, and we're so excited.
- 15:04Speaker 3: We have a great rotation.
- 15:06Speaker 6: I really like our bullpen, I love our position player group,
- 15:08Speaker 6: love our defensive units. So the same thing with the
- 15:11Speaker 6: Bengal left to love the team. So yeah, I think
- 15:13Speaker 6: you're right. We're heading into hopefully.
- 15:15Speaker 3: A golden era of Cincinnati sports here coming up.
- 15:17Speaker 1: It's been fun to visit and enjoy practice.
- 15:19Speaker 3: Thank you very much. Great to be here.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Bents in his tenth major League season and second with
- 15:24Speaker 1: the Reds, and at age thirty five, he still appears
- 15:27Speaker 1: to have plenty left in his left arm. His three
- 15:31Speaker 1: point five to one ERA is basically the same as
- 15:34Speaker 1: his career ERA of three point four six. Before getting
- 15:39Speaker 1: to my next guest, here's a quick reminder that the

- 16:04Speaker 1: Cincinnati recently announced that former Bearcat quarterback Tony Pike is
- 16:09Speaker 1: going into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame this year.
- 16:12Speaker 4: It's a well deserved daughter for.
- 16:14Speaker 1: The quarterback that led youc to the Orange and Sugar
- 16:17Speaker 1: Bowls in two thousand and eight and two thousand and nine.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Tony is a sports talk show host these days and
- 16:24Speaker 1: has been in attendance at nearly every Bengals training camp practice.
- 16:29Speaker 1: I picked his brain about camp and the upcoming season. Tony,
- 16:34Speaker 1: there have been fourteen training camp practices. You have attended
- 16:37Speaker 1: most of them. There's also been one preseason game. Has
- 16:40Speaker 1: your belief in the Bengals ability to compete for a
- 16:44Speaker 1: Super Bowl title increased, decreased or remain the same based
- 16:49Speaker 1: on what you've seen and explain why.
- 16:51Speaker 7: For me, it's always it's increasing because we know what
- 16:55Speaker 7: the offense is and it didn't take you long. It
- 16:57Speaker 7: took two drives exactly, maybe even one against Philadelphia to
- 17:01Speaker 7: know that the offense is picking up right where they
- 17:03Speaker 7: left off. And I think they have, believe it or not,
- 17:06Speaker 7: more weapons. I think Chase Brown, he spent so much
- 17:09Speaker 7: of the offseason working as a three down back, catching passes,
- 17:12Speaker 7: pass protection. He looked unbelievable. They're getting good production. I
- 17:15Speaker 7: think TODs Brooks is going to be a really nice
- 17:17Speaker 7: addition to this team. I love the fact that they're
- 17:20Speaker 7: going to be able to utilize twelve personnel more with
- 17:22Speaker 7: Noah Fan and Mike Kasicki, because last year, before Eric
- 17:25Speaker 7: All got injured, they liked twelve personnel. I think that's
- 17:28Speaker 7: good for Joe Burrow it helps the protection, it opens
- 17:31Speaker 7: things up, and then defensively, I know it wasn't what
- 17:35Speaker 7: you wanted to see against Philadelphia, but if you're there
- 17:38Speaker 7: every day, I think it's hard to argue that they're
- 17:40Speaker 7: getting better defensively every day. If you've got to think,
- 17:43Speaker 7: you've got a brand new defensive coordinator with a brand
- 17:45Speaker 7: new scheme trying to implement with a lot of moving parts,
- 17:50Speaker 7: a rookie on the defensive line, a rookie at linebacker.
- 17:53Speaker 7: You've got young safeties, you got young quarter There's so
- 17:56Speaker 7: much youth on this team that have known one way
- 17:58Speaker 7: since they've been in the NFL well, and now they're
- 18:00Speaker 7: getting it a different way. And I love the way
- 18:03Speaker 7: they've competed. I love that they play with intensity. At times,
- 18:06Speaker 7: you feel like there's a chip on the shoulder of
- 18:08Speaker 7: the defense when they're going against that number one offense
- 18:11Speaker 7: in practice. So I think all the signs that you're
- 18:14Speaker 7: seeing are moving in the right direction there.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Lou Anarumo did a lot of good things, says the
- 18:18Speaker 1: Bengals defensive coordinator. They don't get to the super Bowl
- 18:21Speaker 1: in twenty twenty one if the defense didn't carry them
- 18:24Speaker 1: in those three playoff wins. So I almost feel guilty
- 18:27Speaker 1: saying this, but watching Al Golden over these fourteen practices
- 18:32Speaker 1: has almost made me reconsider how good lou An Arumo
- 18:37Speaker 1: was because things just look that much better to me.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Do you agree with that at all?
- 18:42Speaker 4: Yeah, you know not.
- 18:42Speaker 7: I don't want to spin everything back to UC. But
- 18:45Speaker 7: I was talking to Moegar about this. There was a
- 18:47Speaker 7: time when you remember when it was Kobe Bryant, it
- 18:50Speaker 7: was Brian Cook, it was Sauce Gardner, and you'd watch
- 18:52Speaker 7: them practice and you'd watch them play, and they just
- 18:54Speaker 7: carried themselves in a way of confidence and they flew
- 18:57Speaker 7: around the field. And a little bit of that when
- 19:01Speaker 7: I watch this defense, because as the confidence grows in
- 19:04Speaker 7: what you're doing, you see that speed on the field,
- 19:08Speaker 7: you know, start to separate itself. And I think early
- 19:10Speaker 7: on there's a little hesitation because everything's new, and in sports,
- 19:14Speaker 7: especially football, if you are unsure of what your responsibility is,
- 19:18Speaker 7: you just you move slower. You tend to try to
- 19:22Speaker 7: process everything instead of just going out getting ready to
- 19:25Speaker 7: snap and then and then going and playing. And when
- 19:29Speaker 7: this defense has started to implement, I hate the term
- 19:33Speaker 7: dumbing it down because it's not dumbing it down. But
- 19:35Speaker 7: it's more base personnel. It's allowing guys to go one
- 19:38Speaker 7: on one and make plays. But more than anything, it's
- 19:41Speaker 7: allowing guys to play confidently. They play free, and they
- 19:44Speaker 7: play fast, and you can almost see the moments in
- 19:46Speaker 7: practice that it starts to click with guys where it's like,
- 19:49Speaker 7: man that looked like another speed for Logan Wilson. Man
- 19:53Speaker 7: that looked like Tyson, Anderson is figuring it out right there.
- 19:57Speaker 7: We've raved about Shamar Stewart, but man, okay, Josephos flash.
- 20:00Speaker 7: There's players that flash at different times because you never
- 20:03Speaker 7: know when it's going to click for someone because install
- 20:06Speaker 7: is such a mental game. But when it does, there's
- 20:09Speaker 7: a speed and there's an urgency of separation that you
- 20:12Speaker 7: start to see with these guys.
- 20:14Speaker 1: We are visiting the former you see quarterback Tony Pike.
- 20:16Speaker 1: We're having this conversation three weeks and three days before
- 20:19Speaker 1: the regular season opener in Cleveland. What is your biggest
- 20:23Speaker 1: concern at this point on each side of the ball.
- 20:27Speaker 7: Anytime you hear the term soft tissue injury, I don't
- 20:31Speaker 7: care what sport or how delicate, it is safety on
- 20:35Speaker 7: defense because that's the leader of the defense. That's the
- 20:38Speaker 7: last line of defense, and what I think the defense
- 20:41Speaker 7: can capitalize on is just being a sound defense from
- 20:44Speaker 7: the back to the front to not have the big
- 20:47Speaker 7: plays that are given up. If you give up a
- 20:50Speaker 7: couple short yardage plays or a team's got to go
- 20:52Speaker 7: fifteen plays on you so be it, and then you
- 20:54Speaker 7: bow up in the red zone and you get stops
- 20:56Speaker 7: like I think Al Golden has done a good job
- 20:57Speaker 7: with during training camp.
- 20:59Speaker 4: You can't give up big play.
- 21:00Speaker 7: And I know you want to get after the passer,
- 21:02Speaker 7: but at the back end of the defense, you got
- 21:05Speaker 7: to have a guy that's gonna make sure not only
- 21:07Speaker 7: he's in the right spot, but all other ten guys
- 21:09Speaker 7: are in the right spot as well, and make sure
- 21:11Speaker 7: the communication is where it needs to be. So safety
- 21:13Speaker 7: a little bit still for me. On defense offense, I
- 21:16Speaker 7: still think it's the guard position. I don't think it's
- 21:19Speaker 7: Dylan Fairchild's position because I was extremely impressed with him
- 21:22Speaker 7: against Philadelphia. I've also extremely impressed with him watching him
- 21:26Speaker 7: in practice because now you know the defense is running
- 21:29Speaker 7: some more stunts, it's not as basic one on one rush,
- 21:31Speaker 7: and he's picking everything up. The athleticism, the footwork is there,
- 21:35Speaker 7: it's the other guard spot for me? Is it Lucas Patrick?
- 21:38Speaker 7: Is it Cody Ford? How's that going to pan itself out?
- 21:40Speaker 7: Because we know what everything else is. We know what
- 21:43Speaker 7: the tight ends and the running backs and the wide receivers.
- 21:45Speaker 7: We surely know what the quarterback is. To me, it's
- 21:48Speaker 7: it's still that guard position because if that gets shirt
- 21:51Speaker 7: up and you feel good about that going to Cleveland,
- 21:54Speaker 7: this offense can do crazy things.
- 21:56Speaker 1: And it certainly looks like it's going to be Lucas
- 21:58Speaker 1: Patrick for the last couple of weeks. Now he's the
- 22:00Speaker 1: only guy that's been in there with the ones. Most recently,
- 22:03Speaker 1: Cody Ford has been practicing as the swing tackle, his
- 22:06Speaker 1: primary job last year. So again, we've still got three
- 22:10Speaker 1: weeks and three days from the opener, but it appears
- 22:12Speaker 1: that Lucas Patrick has become the guy.
- 22:15Speaker 7: And we talk all the time about Al Golden. You
- 22:17Speaker 7: got Scott Peters, who's a new O line coach. So
- 22:19Speaker 7: now you've got a new scheme on the offensive line,
- 22:22Speaker 7: You've got new techniques that you're teaching. And I think
- 22:25Speaker 7: we are all guilty of it at some point of
- 22:26Speaker 7: just getting caught up in the moment because you want
- 22:28Speaker 7: to react to everything that's happening, especially in the media.
- 22:33Speaker 7: I'm at times reporting for five hours a day and
- 22:35Speaker 7: then five different calls. You've got to have something to
- 22:37Speaker 7: talk about, and at times I think you get caught
- 22:39Speaker 7: up and just focusing on the day and not realizing
- 22:43Speaker 7: he's still got three weeks and some change before the
- 22:45Speaker 7: first game. There are going to be growing pains anytime
- 22:48Speaker 7: you bring in a new system, but as you continue
- 22:51Speaker 7: to grow, I think you have a chance to learn
- 22:54Speaker 7: from it. There was a point in practice where Shamar
- 22:56Speaker 7: Stewart and we all know the play, beat Lucas Patrick
- 22:59Speaker 7: on a stunt and everyone makes a big deal about
- 23:01Speaker 7: that play, but that same stunt was run later in
- 23:03Speaker 7: practice and Lucas Patrick stuffed him. He stuffed Shamar Stewart
- 23:07Speaker 7: where he was, so to me, he's learning from the
- 23:10Speaker 7: mistake and they're going to continue to go through some
- 23:13Speaker 7: growing pains, but there's still a lot of time between
- 23:15Speaker 7: now in the season.
- 23:16Speaker 1: You reference the soft tissue injury that Geno Stone is
- 23:19Speaker 1: dealing with. Did that expose a lack of depth at
- 23:23Speaker 1: safety more than maybe we even thought about.
- 23:26Speaker 4: I think it did.
- 23:27Speaker 7: And then I think the follow up with coach Zach
- 23:29Speaker 7: Taylor of saying, we got to figure out who we
- 23:31Speaker 7: have back there and what we have. I think it
- 23:33Speaker 7: gives opportunity to some young players, but there's not a
- 23:37Speaker 7: lot of game snaps in that secondary or in that
- 23:40Speaker 7: safety room. And that's hard to overcome because if you
- 23:44Speaker 7: start going down the list of who you're going to
- 23:46Speaker 7: be facing this year, and the ultimate goal is getting
- 23:49Speaker 7: to a super Bowl, and you know the offenses that
- 23:51Speaker 7: are in line with that and what the Ravens can
- 23:53Speaker 7: do and Pittsburgh ads Aaron Rodgers, we know what the
- 23:56Speaker 7: Bills and the Chiefs still are. You've got to be
- 23:59Speaker 7: able to stop the passing game and so much as
- 24:01Speaker 7: pre snap communication. So it does it. It exposes a
- 24:05Speaker 7: little bit of a concern of you hope Gino stones
- 24:08Speaker 7: there because he played great down the stretch last year,
- 24:11Speaker 7: But for me, it's the what's next?
- 24:14Speaker 4: What if?
- 24:15Speaker 7: The contingency plan always has to be in place because depth,
- 24:19Speaker 7: as we know in the NFL, very rarely are guys
- 24:21Speaker 7: going through all seventeen games without getting banged up or
- 24:24Speaker 7: missing a series or a quarter or a couple of games.
- 24:27Speaker 7: The depth is such a key piece for those contending teams.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Joe Burrow says, this is the best he's thrown the
- 24:32Speaker 1: ball in several years. You were an excellent quarterback and
- 24:35Speaker 1: an NFL draft pick. Can you see a difference between
- 24:39Speaker 1: Joe Burrow this camp and the Joe Burrow that we've
- 24:42Speaker 1: enjoyed watching the last several years?
- 24:43Speaker 7: As he said, you're out there, you see it. I mean,
- 24:45Speaker 7: it's a confidence and it's just a swagger that he
- 24:50Speaker 7: carries himself with. It's hard to explain, but I knew
- 24:54Speaker 7: early on in camp watching him in individual drills the
- 24:57Speaker 7: way he handled individual drills, because there are times where
- 24:59Speaker 7: he he's very mechanical, but then there's other times you
- 25:02Speaker 7: see him roll out to his left, flip the hips,
- 25:04Speaker 7: drive the ball, and then he just kind of walks away,
- 25:06Speaker 7: and you could tell as he's walking away, he's like, yep,
- 25:09Speaker 7: that feels good. Like It's just it's hard because it's
- 25:12Speaker 7: hard to explain unless you see it in person. But
- 25:15Speaker 7: you know, I follow a lot of what Dan or
- 25:18Speaker 7: Lofsky does, and Dan ro Lofsky grated the seven best
- 25:21Speaker 7: traits for quarterbacks in the National Football League. Joe Burrow
- 25:23Speaker 7: was at the top of four of them, and you know,
- 25:26Speaker 7: you can't beat that mechanically, pocket presence, timing, ball placement,
- 25:31Speaker 7: you can't beat any of that with Joe Burrow. But
- 25:33Speaker 7: to think about his path to where he's at right
- 25:35Speaker 7: now and everything he's had to overcome in training camp,
- 25:39Speaker 7: from injuries to pandemics, to his number one wide receiver
- 25:43Speaker 7: not doing a snap of preseason camp, and to see
- 25:47Speaker 7: the numbers he's put up and now all of a sudden,
- 25:49Speaker 7: I think you see a guy that knows I've got
- 25:51Speaker 7: my full compliment of weapons. I feel the best I
- 25:53Speaker 7: have in my NFL career. I'm not rehabbing a major injury.
- 25:56Speaker 7: We're not diagnosing on every pass. Did that one wobble?
- 26:00Speaker 7: Was there enough zip on that the wristess is healthy?
- 26:03Speaker 7: And I can tell from playing the position after he
- 26:07Speaker 7: makes a throw the way he kind of carries himself afterwards,
- 26:10Speaker 7: like okay, okay, he's feeling himself a little bit, and
- 26:12Speaker 7: that is a dangerous thing for the NFL.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Let me play off that dan Orlowski list of traits.
- 26:18Speaker 1: So let's turn the clock back to twenty ten. You're
- 26:21Speaker 1: a rookie with the Carolina Panthers. What Joe Burrow trait
- 26:25Speaker 1: would you have liked to steal oh man U.
- 26:30Speaker 7: The ball placement because I don't think you can beat
- 26:33Speaker 7: that in the NFL. I mean Joe Burrow, for what
- 26:35Speaker 7: it's worth. On that list, I think he's seventh or
- 26:37Speaker 7: eighth in arm strength. When's the last time you're watching
- 26:40Speaker 7: a game and a quarterback drops back, kit pats the
- 26:42Speaker 7: ball for a couple seconds and throws at seventy yards
- 26:44Speaker 7: in the air. I don't need the strongest arm, but
- 26:48Speaker 7: the ability. There's been times at camp where I've raved
- 26:52Speaker 7: about what the defense is doing and then just applaud
- 26:55Speaker 7: the offense because Joe Burrow drops a ball into Andrey
- 26:57Speaker 7: Yoshibas down the seam in the middle of three guys.
- 27:00Speaker 7: Like the ball placement to me is the top because
- 27:03Speaker 7: there's no way to defend that. Every defense has a weakness,
- 27:07Speaker 7: every defense has a hole. But the coordinator on the
- 27:09Speaker 7: defense is saying, okay, if they make that throw, tip
- 27:11Speaker 7: your cap. More often than not, you have to tip
- 27:13Speaker 7: your cap to what Joe Burrow is doing because his
- 27:15Speaker 7: ball placement is so elite and he has this he
- 27:19Speaker 7: has this ability no matter what's going on around him.
- 27:22Speaker 7: It's not like if pressure's at his feet his ball
- 27:24Speaker 7: placement waivers. It's not like if he's on the run,
- 27:27Speaker 7: his ball placement waivers. It's not like everything has to
- 27:29Speaker 7: be perfect every single time he throws the ball. The
- 27:32Speaker 7: ball goes where it's supposed to be, and that is
- 27:35Speaker 7: It's something you can't drill, you can't teach, it's just
- 27:37Speaker 7: God given.
- 27:38Speaker 1: You reference some of those throws to Andra Yosi Bosh.
- 27:41Speaker 1: I shoot video basically of every play when they're scrimmaging
- 27:45Speaker 1: a training camp, and it seems to me I have
- 27:48Speaker 1: more clips of spectacular throws to Yosi Bosh than anybody else.
- 27:53Speaker 1: So then I kind of backtrack, and when Joe says
- 27:55Speaker 1: he feels like he's throwing the ball better than he
- 27:57Speaker 1: ever has or as well as he ever has, I
- 28:00Speaker 1: think I've seen more of those kind of intermediate throws
- 28:04Speaker 1: over the corner in front of the safety, dropped in
- 28:06Speaker 1: perfectly to Andrea Yosi Vash than anybody else. And I
- 28:10Speaker 1: wonder if maybe that's the thing that Joe in his
- 28:12Speaker 1: own mind is doing better than he ever has before.
- 28:14Speaker 7: Yeah, it's incredible, And if you're Joe, you know what.
- 28:16Speaker 7: Jamar and t are the obvious. The battle has always
- 28:20Speaker 7: figured out Okay, how can we add more weapons? And
- 28:23Speaker 7: the more I can pump a ball to somebody else
- 28:25Speaker 7: at practice, the more I'm gonna have success on the
- 28:27Speaker 7: field because you're building that player's confidence as well.
- 28:29Speaker 4: But I mean, I can't explain.
- 28:31Speaker 7: That the times where there's a too high look on
- 28:34Speaker 7: defense and a backer or a nickel or a dime
- 28:37Speaker 7: is carrying the slot receiver in this case, andre Yosi Vash,
- 28:42Speaker 7: and somehow the ball fits over top of that Chase
- 28:45Speaker 7: defender and in between two safeties and there's a connection there.
- 28:49Speaker 7: And I think in previous years you've seen the connection
- 28:51Speaker 7: in the red zone more than anything with andre Yosi Vash.
- 28:54Speaker 7: I think now, if you're down there and you see
- 28:57Speaker 7: physically Yoshi vas looks different, like he looks bigger, faster, stronger,
- 29:02Speaker 7: he's better in and out of his breaks. And if
- 29:05Speaker 7: you think just on an offensive point of view, I know,
- 29:08Speaker 7: if I'm a defensive coordinator, I've got to bring attention
- 29:10Speaker 7: to Jamar Chase. I've got to bring attention to t Higgins.
- 29:14Speaker 7: Now I've got to worry about two tight end sets. Oh,
- 29:16Speaker 7: by the way, how am I going to cover andre Yoshibah?
- 29:18Speaker 7: So if you're Andre Now you have the luxury that
- 29:21Speaker 7: every time you line up, you're going to see a
- 29:23Speaker 7: team's third or fourth best cover guy. So you don't
- 29:26Speaker 7: have to beat Jay R Alexander one on one. You
- 29:29Speaker 7: don't have to beat some of the top corners in
- 29:30Speaker 7: this game. You've got to beat a team's third or
- 29:32Speaker 7: fourth best and I like those odds. With what we've
- 29:35Speaker 7: seen from andre Yoshibas to this point of becoming a
- 29:38Speaker 7: very impactful player.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Is it a Cincinnati three way again like it used
- 29:42Speaker 1: to be when Tyler Boyd was the third guy.
- 29:44Speaker 7: I think it's as close as we've had it since
- 29:47Speaker 7: Tyler Boyd was here in his prime. And I think again,
- 29:50Speaker 7: if you see how this offense is built. As a
- 29:54Speaker 7: defensive coordinator, I know we've harped on it. I'm not
- 29:57Speaker 7: trying anything. I'm dropping seven, I'm rushing four. I'm hoping
- 30:01Speaker 7: to get pressure with four, and if not, I'll try
- 30:04Speaker 7: to shrink the field and win in the red zone.
- 30:05Speaker 7: There's no other way that you can guard this offense
- 30:09Speaker 7: because of the matchups that it presents. You know, if
- 30:11Speaker 7: you want to play your small personnel, the Bengals can
- 30:15Speaker 7: go twelve and they can run two tight ends, and
- 30:16Speaker 7: then you got to say, Okay, do I match that
- 30:18Speaker 7: with bigger personnel and then give up some stuff in
- 30:20Speaker 7: the passing game, or do I keep my lighter personnel
- 30:23Speaker 7: out there and then I get dominated in the running game.
- 30:25Speaker 4: So it is a wide receiver.
- 30:27Speaker 7: Dream right now to play in this offense because of
- 30:30Speaker 7: the matchups that you're going to get us at tight
- 30:33Speaker 7: end as well. But yeah, I think they can push
- 30:35Speaker 7: this year to get that three way back.
- 30:38Speaker 1: We're chatting with former NFL quarterback Tony Pike, the host
- 30:40Speaker 1: of Since three sixty on ESPN fifteen thirty in Cincinnati.
- 30:44Speaker 4: Let's turn to defense.
- 30:45Speaker 1: How did you feel about the selection of Shamar Stewart
- 30:49Speaker 1: in the first round when it happened, and how do
- 30:52Speaker 1: you feel now?
- 30:53Speaker 7: You know, I think the obvious answer was the production
- 30:57Speaker 7: and four and a half sacks, And I know playing
- 31:00Speaker 7: in the SEC is different, but you know they have
- 31:02Speaker 7: some bye weeks built in there as well against some
- 31:04Speaker 7: bad competition. So I was a little skeptical because it
- 31:08Speaker 7: felt like, here's a guy that's super athletic, but maybe
- 31:11Speaker 7: not as polished as you would hope for an impact
- 31:14Speaker 7: player at number seventeen. And then of course you don't
- 31:18Speaker 7: know what to think because of how the offseason transpired.
- 31:21Speaker 7: I couldn't be any higher on Shamar Stewart than I
- 31:24Speaker 7: am right now from watching since he came back to
- 31:28Speaker 7: the practice field, since he stepped foot on the field,
- 31:31Speaker 7: he has flashed with power, athleticism, His change of direction
- 31:36Speaker 7: is incredible, his get off. He made a play in
- 31:38Speaker 7: the Philadelphia game where he showed on the run and
- 31:41Speaker 7: if the ball was handed off, he would have made
- 31:43Speaker 7: the play. And then he was still able to get
- 31:44Speaker 7: to the quarterback on the rollout and affect the throw.
- 31:47Speaker 7: And to me, that's when it kind of clicked of okay,
- 31:49Speaker 7: even if the sacks aren't there yet for Shamar Stewart.
- 31:53Speaker 7: Look at Patrick Mahomes last year in the Super Bowl.
- 31:55Speaker 7: Wasn't a ton of sacks, but it was the most
- 31:57Speaker 7: uncomfortable you've ever seen Patrick Mahomes. He almost looked at
- 32:01Speaker 7: times because of the pass rush of Philly, not all
- 32:03Speaker 7: the time getting home, but just making him uncomfortable. So,
- 32:07Speaker 7: if Schamar doesn't have the sack totals that are there yet,
- 32:10Speaker 7: we've already seen at practice, We've already seen in a
- 32:13Speaker 7: game setting that he has the ability to get to
- 32:16Speaker 7: the quarterback and make him uncomfortable. And in the NFL
- 32:19Speaker 7: that can lead to an arm angle that changes in
- 32:21Speaker 7: a ball that sales for a quarterback or not being
- 32:24Speaker 7: able to drive into a throw and there's less on
- 32:26Speaker 7: it and a corner can undercut it. There are plays
- 32:29Speaker 7: that the secondary will make because of Shamar Stewart, even
- 32:33Speaker 7: if he's not getting home and getting the sack.
- 32:35Speaker 1: You ready for a Dan Horde hot take, please, Shamar
- 32:38Speaker 1: Stewart might not finish in the top five in sacks.
- 32:41Speaker 1: He probably won't, at least as a rookie, he will
- 32:44Speaker 1: finish in the top five. And tipped passes. How many
- 32:47Speaker 1: balls has he already tipped?
- 32:48Speaker 4: Yeah, in fourteen.
- 32:49Speaker 7: Practices, it's been incredible. I mean his first practice he
- 32:52Speaker 7: had what two or three on his own, and you know,
- 32:56Speaker 7: I think he's still learning the ropes of you know,
- 32:59Speaker 7: the quarterback halo, and I know we've talked a lot
- 33:02Speaker 7: about that. But the thing is is what I think
- 33:06Speaker 7: this defense needs as a chip. I think they need
- 33:09Speaker 7: a player that's going to punch the other team in
- 33:11Speaker 7: the mouth and not be the one that's getting punched
- 33:13Speaker 7: in the mouth. I would rather have eleven Shamar Stewarts
- 33:16Speaker 7: that are going to play through the whistle than someone
- 33:18Speaker 7: that's maybe going to be on that timid side just
- 33:21Speaker 7: a little bit that. That was the same conversation that
- 33:23Speaker 7: was talked early in camp about Demetrius Knight. Zach Taylor
- 33:26Speaker 7: talked about, well, you know, sometimes he's a little bit
- 33:29Speaker 7: pushing the issue from a tackling or a hitting standpoint,
- 33:32Speaker 7: But he said, I'd rather have a guy like that
- 33:34Speaker 7: than a guy on the other end of the spectrum.
- 33:36Speaker 7: So I think both the young guys on defense they
- 33:40Speaker 7: have an impact because they play with a chip and
- 33:42Speaker 7: they play with a speed and they're the aggressors. And
- 33:45Speaker 7: if you can feed on that as a defense and
- 33:47Speaker 7: adopt that mentality, you're going to have a lot of success.
- 33:50Speaker 1: So when Shamar Stewart stumbled and collide to with Joe
- 33:54Speaker 1: Burrow and the offensive line took exception and started to
- 33:57Speaker 1: fight on the next snap, should they have Was Shami
- 34:00Speaker 1: Stewart in the wrong even if it was accidental, No.
- 34:03Speaker 4: I don't think so.
- 34:05Speaker 7: If he was untouched to the quarterback and he just
- 34:09Speaker 7: got in the bubble of Joe Burrow and stood there, absolutely,
- 34:14Speaker 7: you know, I understand the skirmish in the fight. The
- 34:17Speaker 7: issue is, and players don't know this on the field
- 34:20Speaker 7: at the time. They just see Burrow down. And I
- 34:22Speaker 7: love the fact that everyone ran in because that's what
- 34:25Speaker 7: you want, that mentality you want. If number nine is down,
- 34:28Speaker 7: I want five offensive linemen going to pick him up.
- 34:31Speaker 7: But in that case, at least to me, it looked
- 34:34Speaker 7: like on his stunt he already had started to lose
- 34:38Speaker 7: his balance, and I think as he was beating Lucas Patrick,
- 34:41Speaker 7: he kind of got a shove from Lucas Patrick. And
- 34:44Speaker 7: if you've ever fallen before, or fallen over a period
- 34:46Speaker 7: of a couple of yards, it's hard enough to regain
- 34:49Speaker 7: your balance, let alone being pushed by an offensive lineman.
- 34:53Speaker 7: I think it was just his momentum because he does
- 34:56Speaker 7: his fire is different, his get off is, he's operating
- 35:00Speaker 7: a different speed. I think that was completely an accident,
- 35:04Speaker 7: and it's one of those teaching moments to say, hey,
- 35:06Speaker 7: just remember you know, we don't go near the quarterback.
- 35:10Speaker 7: But I don't think you can fault him for that play.
- 35:12Speaker 7: I don't think there was anything malicious. I think he
- 35:14Speaker 7: lost his balance and couldn't regain it until unfortunately he
- 35:17Speaker 7: got into the lap of Joe Burrow.
- 35:19Speaker 1: So sometime in the last twenty four hours or so,
- 35:22Speaker 1: Brandon Schurf announced his retirement. So Bengals fans that have
- 35:25Speaker 1: still been pining for them to sign a Brandon Shurf,
- 35:28Speaker 1: the veteran offensive guard, are not going to get their wish.
- 35:32Speaker 1: If the Bengals were to decide to add a veteran
- 35:35Speaker 1: before the start of the season, do you have somebody
- 35:38Speaker 1: that you would like to see them go after?
- 35:41Speaker 7: Uh, well, I think Arizona already scooped up Bernandez. Now
- 35:46Speaker 7: with Sheriff off the board, I think it becomes one
- 35:49Speaker 7: of those you pay attention to thirty one other teams
- 35:51Speaker 7: on cutdown day because you know what you always get
- 35:55Speaker 7: met with is well, if they're still out there, that
- 35:57Speaker 7: means thirty one other teams passed on them. That's not
- 35:59Speaker 7: the case because thirty one other teams might not have
- 36:01Speaker 7: the same need that you have if you're the Cincinnati Bengals.
- 36:04Speaker 7: So like free agent wise, I don't think there's anyone
- 36:09Speaker 7: that you're gonna bring in and say boom, that's an
- 36:10Speaker 7: immediate upgrade. There are always times during cutdown days in
- 36:15Speaker 7: the NFL where you say, man, that player got let
- 36:18Speaker 7: go or they moved on from him because they might
- 36:21Speaker 7: have a surplus of players they might've drafted at that position,
- 36:23Speaker 7: they might be confident in there one or two deep there.
- 36:26Speaker 7: So I think more than any other year, you pay
- 36:30Speaker 7: attention to cut down days and see who's left out
- 36:33Speaker 7: there and say, okay, does that make an immediate knee
- 36:37Speaker 7: or immediate upgrade do our roster right now? Are we
- 36:39Speaker 7: better with that player than we would be without.
- 36:42Speaker 1: The other name that a lot of people bring up
- 36:44Speaker 1: is Justin Simmons, the safety who is great several years ago.
- 36:48Speaker 1: His PFF grades were lousy. Last year, he's thirty one.
- 36:51Speaker 1: He really seems to be declining. So I think that
- 36:53Speaker 1: does kind of fit under that description of well, he's
- 36:56Speaker 1: probably still out there for a reason, and maybe you're
- 36:58Speaker 1: better off seeing what's available after cutdown day for guys
- 37:01Speaker 1: that have actually played in preseason games and you can
- 37:04Speaker 1: evaluate how they look right now.
- 37:05Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, if you wanted to dive into PFF,
- 37:08Speaker 7: von Bell had a higher PFF grade last year than
- 37:11Speaker 7: Justin Simmons. And I know it's not all about the grade,
- 37:14Speaker 7: it's about the system, it's about the scheme, but he
- 37:15Speaker 7: did that playing next to one of the best safeties
- 37:18Speaker 7: in the league and Jesse Bates. So you know, I'm
- 37:21Speaker 7: not in the belief of you've got to reach or
- 37:24Speaker 7: you've got a panic, because again, there are players that
- 37:27Speaker 7: come about on cutdown day. I think they're going to
- 37:29Speaker 7: be active on cutdown day, not just to add one piece,
- 37:32Speaker 7: but I think they had maybe two three pieces because
- 37:35Speaker 7: of the ability of guys that have now been in
- 37:37Speaker 7: football shape. We talked about that all the time of
- 37:40Speaker 7: you know, you don't go through a training camp. You're
- 37:42Speaker 7: working out, but you're not working out the same as
- 37:44Speaker 7: you would be if you're out there on the practice
- 37:46Speaker 7: field every single day. But I think safety, I think
- 37:50Speaker 7: guard on cutdown day is going to be very interesting
- 37:53Speaker 7: to watch what these other teams.
- 37:54Speaker 1: Do, aside from Joe Burrow, Jamar Jason T. Higgins who
- 37:59Speaker 1: has impressed you the most at training camp and feel
- 38:02Speaker 1: free to go with one on offense and one on
- 38:04Speaker 1: defense if you feel that way.
- 38:06Speaker 7: Yeah, I think there's times in this week Marco Wilson
- 38:09Speaker 7: flashed at corner. I think he made some really good
- 38:11Speaker 7: plays in the practice that was built up as a
- 38:15Speaker 7: lot of unscripted plays. And I want to see guys
- 38:17Speaker 7: that can go off script and react, and I think
- 38:20Speaker 7: that was impressive. But for me, Demetrius Night, I think,
- 38:23Speaker 7: is at a.
- 38:23Speaker 4: Really solid camp.
- 38:24Speaker 7: I can't express how hard it is for a rookie
- 38:28Speaker 7: to go through a system you've been in for years.
- 38:30Speaker 7: Then you break from that system, you scrap all of it,
- 38:34Speaker 7: and then you just worry about getting your body right
- 38:36Speaker 7: for the combine and Pro days. And then you get
- 38:40Speaker 7: through that and before you can take a breath, now
- 38:42Speaker 7: you're going to rookie mini camp, and then you're going
- 38:44Speaker 7: to off season workouts, and then you're going to preseason camp.
- 38:48Speaker 4: You don't have an off season, and.
- 38:50Speaker 7: Your mind is just always being flooded with new information.
- 38:55Speaker 7: I think he's taken to a very hard position in
- 38:57Speaker 7: the NFL extremely well. Yes, you got to finish plays,
- 39:01Speaker 7: you got to make tackles, but more often than not,
- 39:03Speaker 7: I see Demetrius Night. He's in the right place, he's
- 39:06Speaker 7: connected to a guy in coverage, he's filling a gap
- 39:09Speaker 7: correctly in the run game. I think he's had a
- 39:11Speaker 7: really really good camp as maybe the draft pick that
- 39:14Speaker 7: didn't get talked about because so much focus was on
- 39:16Speaker 7: Shamar Stewart and then so much focus was on Dylan Fairchild.
- 39:19Speaker 7: He kind of got sandwiched in between, and I think
- 39:21Speaker 7: he's been really, really solid. We don't talk much about him,
- 39:25Speaker 7: but Charlie Jones to me is just this solid under
- 39:30Speaker 7: the radar, doesn't make any noise, and then in the
- 39:32Speaker 7: preseason game you see him get targeted and he makes
- 39:34Speaker 7: some catches. You see him in the special team's return game.
- 39:37Speaker 7: He's always solid. I looked at years ago Trent Irwin
- 39:42Speaker 7: when he needed to play because of injuries to others.
- 39:45Speaker 7: It was like they didn't skip a beat when he
- 39:46Speaker 7: came in, and Joe Burrow was confident enough to find him.
- 39:49Speaker 7: And I think all the receivers, Jermaine Burtons had a
- 39:51Speaker 7: really good camp. But I think it says something when
- 39:54Speaker 7: you get into a preseason game and everything's firing around
- 39:57Speaker 7: you in the quarterback with just instinct, confident in going
- 40:00Speaker 7: to you knowing you're going to be doing what you
- 40:02Speaker 7: need to be doing, You're going to be in your spot.
- 40:05Speaker 7: I've been extremely impressed with him. I mentioned earlier, I
- 40:08Speaker 7: think todzs Brooks is a steal and I might be
- 40:11Speaker 7: biased because we sat there at Texas TCH and watched
- 40:13Speaker 7: what he did to the Bearcats, but Texas Tech is
- 40:16Speaker 7: known for a spread it out though at fifty sixty
- 40:19Speaker 7: times a game.
- 40:20Speaker 4: He had back to back thousand yard rushing years fifteen
- 40:23Speaker 4: hundred yards.
- 40:23Speaker 7: He's a bowling ball, and what I like most about
- 40:26Speaker 7: him is he is more than willing and able to
- 40:28Speaker 7: step in in a pass protection role. And I don't
- 40:31Speaker 7: know how big the role will be this year, but
- 40:33Speaker 7: I think you feel really good about not only him,
- 40:36Speaker 7: but when you kind of look at everything together, a
- 40:38Speaker 7: lot of the young core.
- 40:39Speaker 4: Nucleus that's shown so far for the Bengals through.
- 40:42Speaker 1: Camp certainly like those choices. I'll give you a couple
- 40:44Speaker 1: of mine. I think Cam Taylor Britt has been excellent
- 40:47Speaker 1: this camp. I really can't think of a bad practice
- 40:50Speaker 1: that he's had. Some have been better than others. But
- 40:53Speaker 1: he looks like the guy that we thought he was
- 40:55Speaker 1: going to be going into last season, where money of
- 40:58Speaker 1: has said, you know, there's maybe an odd chance he
- 41:00Speaker 1: becomes a pro bowler. He looks like that guy.
- 41:02Speaker 4: Again.
- 41:02Speaker 7: It's hard because when you watch you don't notice a
- 41:05Speaker 7: ton but that's a good thing if you're a corner,
- 41:07Speaker 7: like if you are man, there's another catch down the sideline.
- 41:10Speaker 7: Who's that on? Oh, Cam like that that's a bad thing.
- 41:13Speaker 7: There's like very few instances I can go back to
- 41:16Speaker 7: right now and say, man, that Cam got beat. And
- 41:21Speaker 7: if it is like there was a play unscripted first
- 41:25Speaker 7: drive when the Bengals went down and scored. It was
- 41:27Speaker 7: a third down, Joe Burrow hit Jamar Chase on a
- 41:30Speaker 7: back shoulder throw that you could not have covered any
- 41:32Speaker 7: better as a corner in the NFL. That was Cam
- 41:35Speaker 7: Taylor britt It's like, Okay, tip your cap. The best
- 41:38Speaker 7: wide receiver in football and the best quarterback just connected
- 41:41Speaker 7: and made a very good play. But even the plays
- 41:43Speaker 7: that are made, it feels like he's in the right
- 41:45Speaker 7: position and where he needs to be. And I don't
- 41:48Speaker 7: think you can say enough about you know, the iron
- 41:50Speaker 7: sharpens iron mentality of what the defense gets by going
- 41:55Speaker 7: against that offense every day and a Jamar Chase and
- 41:58Speaker 7: Joe Burrow, and I think you just grow leaps and
- 42:00Speaker 7: bounds from that.
- 42:01Speaker 1: On that back shoulder catch that you just described, I
- 42:04Speaker 1: happened to be standing very close to where Jamar caught
- 42:07Speaker 1: the ball. Cam Taylor Bridd actually deflected it. Jamar still
- 42:11Speaker 1: made the catch, and afterward the cornerbacks coach Chuck Burke's
- 42:14Speaker 1: yelled out great coverage Cam just to make sure he knews.
- 42:19Speaker 7: There's nothing else you can do in those situations. It
- 42:21Speaker 7: has just tip your cap, pat him on the back
- 42:24Speaker 7: and move on to the next play and try to
- 42:25Speaker 7: get him then.
- 42:26Speaker 1: And the offensive guy that's impressed me the most other
- 42:29Speaker 1: than the big three is a guy we talked about earlier,
- 42:31Speaker 1: andre Yosi Vash. And I put it this way, everything
- 42:35Speaker 1: that fans want Jermaine Burton to be, andre Yosi Vash
- 42:39Speaker 1: already is big, strong, fast, runs great routes. He's become tougher,
- 42:46Speaker 1: He's become better at contested catches. So yeah, I'm interested
- 42:49Speaker 1: in Jermaine Burton. I hope he lives up to his potential.
- 42:52Speaker 1: I think andre Josi Vash is already that guy.
- 42:54Speaker 7: The contested catches have stood out at camp. But I
- 42:57Speaker 7: also think his route running just looks so much cleanup.
- 43:00Speaker 7: And I think the first couple of years he knew, Okay,
- 43:02Speaker 7: this is going to be my role. Let me excel
- 43:04Speaker 7: in my red zone routes. And you saw in the
- 43:06Speaker 7: red zone Joe Burrow would find him, whereas it wasn't
- 43:09Speaker 7: in between the twenties as much.
- 43:11Speaker 4: And I think.
- 43:12Speaker 7: Now because what you've seen a camp, you see that
- 43:15Speaker 7: and you see the build up of the confidence that
- 43:18Speaker 7: Joe Burrow now has and andre Yoshiva. I also think
- 43:21Speaker 7: in being there, there are just guys you see, Like
- 43:23Speaker 7: you see t Higgins on a practice field and you're like,
- 43:25Speaker 7: holy cat, like he is huge. I've seen andre Yoshi
- 43:29Speaker 7: vas and you like double take this year, like that
- 43:31Speaker 7: can't be the same guy. Like whatever he's done in
- 43:33Speaker 7: the off season, whatever the workout regimen that he's been on,
- 43:37Speaker 7: I need to get on that because it's leaps and
- 43:40Speaker 7: bounds where he was, and it's also the little things
- 43:43Speaker 7: like there was a practice early in camp and it's
- 43:44Speaker 7: the dog days of camp he was. He was probably
- 43:48Speaker 7: out there thirty minutes after camp, signing autographs and taking
- 43:51Speaker 7: pictures and not just moving down the line, but having
- 43:53Speaker 7: genuine conversations, looking people in the eye, you know, talking
- 43:56Speaker 7: to fans. And I just think the way you connect
- 43:59Speaker 7: that way and the way he's connected with Burrow and
- 44:01Speaker 7: the physical nature in which he's playing right now is
- 44:04Speaker 7: poised to have some sort of breakout. I don't know
- 44:07Speaker 7: what that is, because you have so many weapons gets taled.
- 44:10Speaker 7: I don't know what andre Yoshibah's breakout year is, but
- 44:13Speaker 7: there are going to be games this year where he's
- 44:14Speaker 7: relied on to make a big catch or big catches
- 44:18Speaker 7: because he's getting the coverage rolled away from him. And
- 44:22Speaker 7: I think if you're the Bengals, you're confident that he's
- 44:24Speaker 7: gonna win those battles.
- 44:25Speaker 1: A couple more things for Tony Pike. Is there a
- 44:27Speaker 1: guy or are there a couple of guys that you're
- 44:30Speaker 1: still waiting to see something from a person that you
- 44:33Speaker 1: focused on and just think to yourself, man, take the
- 44:36Speaker 1: next step.
- 44:37Speaker 7: I think offensive line wise, you're happy with Warre Mims
- 44:41Speaker 7: has taken it. You're knowing that Dylan Fairchild is growing.
- 44:44Speaker 7: You're solid with Orlando Brown Junior. I think Lucas Patrick
- 44:47Speaker 7: you still want to see more. And what I like
- 44:50Speaker 7: about Lucas Patrick is he's not making the same mistake twice.
- 44:53Speaker 7: He's learning as he goes, but he's still got a
- 44:55Speaker 7: little bit of a ways to go. And I don't
- 44:57Speaker 7: think it's any detriment to the players themselves, but I
- 45:00Speaker 7: would like to see more twelve personnel. We just can't
- 45:02Speaker 7: because Mike Kasicki hasn't practiced because we haven't got a
- 45:05Speaker 7: chance to see yet and Gasicki in the game at
- 45:08Speaker 7: the same time, and what that can look like to
- 45:11Speaker 7: a defensive standpoint. Outside of that on offense, I don't
- 45:14Speaker 7: think you can take much away from what they've done.
- 45:16Speaker 7: I still think there are times where you want to
- 45:19Speaker 7: see Miles Murphy finish where again you want to talk
- 45:22Speaker 7: about physical You look at him and you're like, man,
- 45:24Speaker 7: that's a defensive end in the NFL. He's got all
- 45:27Speaker 7: the tools and at times he's so close to being there,
- 45:30Speaker 7: but he just doesn't finish. And if you could figure
- 45:33Speaker 7: out a way to get him to finish with the
- 45:35Speaker 7: JOSEPHO said that played at the end of last year,
- 45:37Speaker 7: adding Shamar Stewart ideally getting Trey Hendrickson back. All of
- 45:40Speaker 7: a sudden, if you're out, golden third downs become exciting
- 45:44Speaker 7: because now I think you have versatile guys in Miles
- 45:48Speaker 7: Murphy and Shamar Stewart that don't just have to line
- 45:49Speaker 7: up at defensive end. I think you can move him inside.
- 45:52Speaker 7: I think you can stand him up on the outside.
- 45:54Speaker 7: I think you can get really creative if you can
- 45:56Speaker 7: just get that next bit of production from a guy
- 45:59Speaker 7: like Miles Murphy.
- 46:00Speaker 1: Final thing, is there anything you're really looking to see
- 46:04Speaker 1: in the second preseason game at Washington on Monday night?
- 46:07Speaker 7: I would love to see the offense just be as
- 46:10Speaker 7: crisp as they were, because I view it as the
- 46:12Speaker 7: last chance you get to do that before you get
- 46:15Speaker 7: to Cleveland and a lot of folks they will scoring
- 46:18Speaker 7: get them out. There's a value from an offensive standpoint
- 46:21Speaker 7: in running a series, coming to the sideline, looking at
- 46:25Speaker 7: the iPad, getting some teaching moments and say, hey, they're
- 46:28Speaker 7: doing this, Let's try this on the next series. So
- 46:30Speaker 7: it's not about just go down and score and get out.
- 46:32Speaker 7: I think it's valuable to come out and get Okay,
- 46:35Speaker 7: what's going on the sideline, what are they doing? What's
- 46:38Speaker 7: our answer to it? Boom here it is, let's go
- 46:40Speaker 7: do it on the next drive. Defensively, they've got to
- 46:43Speaker 7: be better than what they were, and that's all I'm
- 46:46Speaker 7: looking for. All I want to see is, hey, the
- 46:48Speaker 7: baseline didn't start off great, but can you get better
- 46:52Speaker 7: against Washington than you were against Philly? Because if that's
- 46:55Speaker 7: the case, then it tells me they're improving, they're learning.
- 46:59Speaker 7: They take what they're being taught and they're putting it
- 47:01Speaker 7: on the field. There are going to be growing pains
- 47:03Speaker 7: on the defensive side of the ball. But as long
- 47:06Speaker 7: as you are getting better when you get opportunities, then
- 47:08Speaker 7: I think you feel good if you're al golden in
- 47:10Speaker 7: this team. And then Evan McPherson, you know, he made
- 47:13Speaker 7: a fifty one yarder in Week one. I would like
- 47:16Speaker 7: and you never want to do it because you don't
- 47:17Speaker 7: want to take away from your offense. But I'd like
- 47:19Speaker 7: if there was a third and long to maybe just
- 47:21Speaker 7: run the ball and give Evan a fifty three fifty
- 47:24Speaker 7: four yarder, because I think that confidence for him goes
- 47:26Speaker 7: a long way as well. So all three aspects, I
- 47:30Speaker 7: think there are good things you can see. And then
- 47:32Speaker 7: get off the field healthy and get ready for the
- 47:34Speaker 7: regular season.
- 47:35Speaker 1: Let Evan go from seventy like the Jacksonville Oh.
- 47:38Speaker 7: Boy, you know who held for him in college? I
- 47:40Speaker 7: don't our guy Fletcher Huh, Arkansas. How about that good
- 47:45Speaker 7: nugget there you go. That's why I deliver nuggets.
- 47:49Speaker 1: Tony, you're doing an awesome job on Cincy three sixty
