- 0:58This is Scott Becker with the Becker's health
- 1:01care podcast.
- 1:03We're gonna quickly walk through
- 1:05about eight stories that we're currently following in
- 1:07health care that tell part of the story
- 1:09of where health care is at and also
- 1:10get some highlights, and some news in health
- 1:13care environment.
- 1:14First, Tennessee
- 1:16approves a $900,000,000
- 1:17hospital for Regional One Health. So Regional One
- 1:20Health will bill be building a new hospital.
- 1:23And, again, this is, again, the story of
- 1:25health care in America right now. 60% of
- 1:27health systems have some margin, 40% do not.
- 1:31It is that 60% that's able to build
- 1:33and do some of the things that are
- 1:34needed to be done
- 1:36like this. So congratulations to regional one health,
- 1:39but it also tells a deeper story of
- 1:40haves and have nots in health care.
- 1:43Second, Kellie Gooch reports on the increasing complexity
- 1:46of the role of the chief operating officer.
- 1:48Many of us view the chief operating officer
- 1:50role as very, very important. Some places have
- 1:53tried to lean that out. We think that's
- 1:56largely a mistake.
- 1:58Third, there's news of a deal.
- 2:00Lumina Healthcare joins ECG Management Consultants. ECG Management
- 2:04Consultants is is really a phenomenal
- 2:06leading consulting firm, often working with academic medical
- 2:09centers and a lot a lot of other
- 2:11types of health systems and hospitals and and
- 2:13providers.
- 2:14Matt Gevinson firm, Lumen Healthcare joins ECG Management
- 2:18Consultants. Fourth,
- 2:19Jeffrey Flax, the great CEO at Hartford HealthCare
- 2:23says that it's really the best time to
- 2:25be in health care with all the challenges,
- 2:27all the things that are going on.
- 2:29Jeff Hampstead, a remarkable
- 2:31leader, a great article where he talks about
- 2:33being the best time to be in health
- 2:34care even though there are so many challenges
- 2:36in health care. He and his predecessor and
- 2:39the whole entire Hartford Health Care team have
- 2:41built a tremendous system at Hartford HealthCare.
- 2:44Fifth, Fitch upgrades
- 2:46University of Colorado Health's rating to double a
- 2:49plus.
- 2:50That's University of Colorado Health. That's a terrific
- 2:52upgrade, very positive news.
- 2:55Sixth,
- 2:56SWOT today, the announcement that Mark Clement,
- 2:59the brilliant leader at TriHealth, will retire at
- 3:01the end of this fiscal year.
- 3:03Again,
- 3:03TriHealth, a great system. Mark Clement's been there
- 3:06for eleven years. He's just done a fantastic
- 3:08job.
- 3:10Another leader from the system is taking over
- 3:12that role, also a fantastic leader. So that
- 3:14that's sixth with with the TriHealth system.
- 3:19Seventh, a judge orders the LeapFrog group
- 3:22to remove grades from several hospitals,
- 3:25saying that the methodology they used wasn't fair
- 3:28to hospitals. In fact, what they did in
- 3:29some places was if possible didn't respond, they
- 3:32got negative ratings,
- 3:34which isn't really fair because you don't really
- 3:36know how that hospital would have done on
- 3:37those different stats and so forth. Finally, eighth,
- 3:40one of the highlights of my week was
- 3:42having a good chance to hear an interview
- 3:44by Michelin Davis of National Medical Fellowships of
- 3:47doctor Kelvin Wheeler.
- 3:49Doctor Kevin Wheeler is about an 80 year
- 3:51old pediatric
- 3:53physician at Kaiser Permanente.
- 3:55The interview that I had a chance to
- 3:57be at in person for National Medical Fellowships,
- 3:59where I serve on the board,
- 4:01discussed doctor Wheeler's
- 4:03history in growing up in a segregated world
- 4:06and becoming a doctor.
- 4:08It was a tremendously inspiring
- 4:10and awesome discussion
- 4:12with Doctor. Wheeler, who's this just remarkable
- 4:15physician leader,
- 4:16about his history
- 4:18of growing up and becoming a leading physician
- 4:20in the country. Just a remarkable story of
- 4:23living through segregation,
- 4:25in the fifties and sixties, you know, and
- 4:27still with us now to so brilliantly
- 4:30and eloquently tell the story of of his
- 4:32career and his profession.
- 4:34So that was that was the highlight of
- 4:35of of my week. And in in any
- 4:37event, these are eight of the stories that
- 4:39we're following today at Becker's Healthcare. Thank you
- 4:41so much for listening to the Becker's Healthcare
- 4:42podcast.
