Latest / Boundary Corner Podcast / Season Primer: Part 2

- 0:59Hi, Sheldon. Let's start us off on defense,
- 1:01big guy. Yeah, I got dips in here, but
- 1:04just to kind of kick start the defensive discussion, obviously
- 1:07last year we kind of alluded to this, but you know, the defense
- 1:09had some good stats. You look at average yards per
- 1:12game, points per game was all pretty solid.
- 1:15They forced some turnovers, but we talked about the issues with,
- 1:18you know, second-half late in games that gave up almost 100
- 1:21points and third quarter of games last season, including 43
- 1:25in the last five minutes of games.
- 1:28And we saw it just, you know, we we talked about, you know, how
- 1:30much of that was strength and conditioning.
- 1:32Again, we can we can debate that all day.
- 1:34But talk about the defense. You know, Sam Sicus comes in
- 1:41first year coordinator. We talked about what, what is
- 1:45most critical for the Stevens unit this season between
- 1:49halftime adjustments and closing games, talking about, you know,
- 1:52coaching, you know, S&C, whatever it may be.
- 1:56What, what do you think is most critical for the Stevens to kind
- 1:59of get rid of those those late game woes that we kind of saw
- 2:02last season? Again, we we know there's talent
- 2:05there, but how do they fully, you know, implement that talent
- 2:08for for the entirety of a 60 minute game, which they just
- 2:11didn't do last season? Go ahead, Dwight.
- 2:15Go ahead. Hold on.
- 2:17Say that last part again. My, my, my reception.
- 2:20No, no, seriously, I'm not. What was the question?
- 2:23Because my thing. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:23So, so we're just talking about what what's what's critical
- 2:27between halftime adjustments on defense and and closing out
- 2:30games? What what's kind of the the
- 2:32secret formula Tech needs or or a way they can improve from last
- 2:35season when it comes to being being efficient in the
- 2:38second-half? This is a great question.
- 2:40It is again another simple solution with a simple answer
- 2:44you have for defense. You have to adjust much quicker.
- 2:48I'm going to give you a great example.
- 2:50In the Miami game they made, that was probably Cam Cam Ward's
- 2:54worst game last season. He had, I believe, two or three
- 2:58picks. He had two, but two.
- 3:02He had, he had two, right? He had the one that should have
- 3:04been a pick 6, but dude didn't make it all the way to the end
- 3:07zone. But in that game, I kept saying
- 3:11please put a spy on Cam Ward. We didn't have a spy on him.
- 3:15So there was, you know, you knew what it could do.
- 3:17Late in the game, they put Caleb Woodson on him.
- 3:21He was spying. I'm not going to put the inside
- 3:25information I know out there because I know some players on
- 3:27the team and I, I look, the truth of the matter is you have
- 3:31to we have to make quicker adjustments on on defense.
- 3:35There was many times I'm going to give you another one.
- 3:37This was a very, very bad example of lack of adjustments
- 3:42and a very bad memory. Rutgers ran the same fake.
- 3:48Hand off roll out. The entire game and we never
- 3:53adjusted. And you know what we paid for
- 3:55those sins because several games throughout the season teams read
- 3:59that on critical situations. I'm like, can we please for love
- 4:03of Blacksburg Hokeystone make an adjustment?
- 4:08It is listen, everyone knows y'all all laughing.
- 4:11It was that gun. It was the clap snap, get it,
- 4:15fake it, roll out. That is a nine you on Saturday
- 4:26morning Dumfries field play where you see 9 year olds
- 4:29running that little. I ran a flag football said like
- 4:33and you get it, you fake it, you drag a guy and you and it was
- 4:36like again. So Shelton, the bottom line is
- 4:39quicker adjustments. Everybody talks about Oh my God,
- 4:43Bud was the goat. Bud was the goat.
- 4:44Yes, he was, but I remember when Tech beat North Carolina and
- 4:49North Carolina when Tyra was there, big match up in ACC was,
- 4:52you know, back when there was divisions, Tech went down there
- 4:55and won 26 to 13 or 2629 and 10, something like that.
- 5:00And it sold out. Crowd and mostly Tech fans and
- 5:05Bud Forrest after the game said he credited Tory and Gray for
- 5:09the adjustments he made with Eddie Whitley and the safety
- 5:12like so he knew Carolina gave them a new wrinkle.
- 5:16Let let me take you back to last season in six to eight of the
- 5:20post game pressers. How many times did we hear they
- 5:24did some things we didn't see on tape.
- 5:27Everyone does things we don't see on tape, especially after we
- 5:30see. On tape, that's everybody
- 5:34saying. Again, raise your hand if you're
- 5:37watching this and you played or you watched a game where the
- 5:40players were miked up. I know this the first two
- 5:43series, you you're feeling yourself.
- 5:45And the coach says, hey, hey, hey, he grabs that board.
- 5:48Hey, what are you seeing out there?
- 5:49Tell me what they doing. What are they doing out there?
- 5:52You know? So when the hell did that
- 5:54happen? Because to me, the tight end
- 5:56dragging Shelton, it was again and you're going against a dual
- 6:02threat quarterback and you know it was.
- 6:04It was a coordinator. Dwight didn't even want to take
- 6:08direction from Bud Foster, didn't even want to help from
- 6:10Bud Foster. So you got a defensive
- 6:13coordinator that don't want to get help from Bud Foster.
- 6:14You're not going to ask a player what he sees.
- 6:17He just says I know what I'm doing and everybody should be OK
- 6:19with what I'm doing. That's why he gone.
- 6:22I mean, we got to get, I think sometimes like coordinators can
- 6:26get in that we do, we do mindset.
- 6:28And like, like you said, Dwight, like adjustments are going to be
- 6:32the most important part of more quickly adapting to what the
- 6:38game plan of the other team is. Because we had a lot of a lot of
- 6:41times, like you, like you pointed out, you Rutgers was a
- 6:45big one. We just, we look like we weren't
- 6:48prepared and we it's not that we weren't prepared.
- 6:50It's that the coordinator has to, like you said, get them on
- 6:54the sideline, talk them through this and say, Hey, what are they
- 6:57doing out there? What are you seeing?
- 6:59What are they coming out in what, what's the formations that
- 7:02are coming out inconsistently? What are these guys doing?
- 7:04How are they blocking this up? And at some point you got to,
- 7:07you got to get together with the team and make some adjustments
- 7:10because. I'm going to say this, Brian,
- 7:12I'm going to say this and I hate to be because if I'm getting mad
- 7:16when I think about this guy, but I, I've been dumb and started
- 7:19looking at at looking at games from last year.
- 7:23You know how YouTube has the, the, what do you call them
- 7:26condensed games? I went back and started looking
- 7:28at them. I'm going to stop doing it
- 7:29because I'm going to get mad. But listen.
- 7:31Go watch the whole one, it'll really make you mad.
- 7:34So people who play sports understand this, or even if you
- 7:37watch sports, you should understand this.
- 7:39Defense isn't always about defense.
- 7:42Defense has some things in there that's kind of like offense,
- 7:46just because we call it defense, that's what it is.
- 7:49But when you talk about attacking defense, that's not
- 7:52sitting back waiting to see what the person can do.
- 7:55Like if you look at a good defender like a, it's very hard
- 8:00for a defender to stop a offense.
- 8:03Like somebody who plays offense on Michael Jordan, it's hard for
- 8:07him to stop him because he's got the ball.
- 8:09He knows what he's doing, right? You have to be really good at
- 8:13attacking on defense to have a good, good defense.
- 8:17And I'm not saying that we had a great defense, but it was always
- 8:20like we was playing defense. We were sliding, oh, let's see
- 8:23what they're going to do. You have to have a game plan.
- 8:26You have to have a game plan to go attack the other team.
- 8:30We didn't have anything where we attacked the other team after
- 8:33halftime. We didn't have any adjustments
- 8:36that we made to go attack. Your plan when you get people on
- 8:40the heels and you didn't go and attack, what are we doing?
- 8:44You're playing Syracuse and then you putting this guy on a
- 8:48receiver that ain't caught a pass all year and he catches 2
- 8:53touchdowns on you and has his his Super Bowl game.
- 8:57Take him out, let him go to LSU, put somebody else in.
- 9:02Let's see what somebody can do. I don't know man, I'm just
- 9:06saying. 100 points. Listen, I found that stat, but I
- 9:11found the 100 points, 100 points in the third quarter last year,
- 9:14100. 100 points. Third quarter, that's just
- 9:18regular season and y'all think there were a few games?
- 9:21Stanford, UVA couple games. We didn't give up shit in the
- 9:26third quarter. Think about that.
- 9:27They were like 3-4 games. We gave up nothing.
- 9:31So you're talking about giving up multiple scores in one
- 9:33quarter Completely flips the game?
- 9:36Yeah, I just, I just I, I, I, you know, again, I just feel
- 9:42like, man, you know, I said this on Tally's Twitter Space post
- 9:47game one time and I saw flashes of it.
- 9:51The the most I saw it was the Boston College and I saw
- 9:55throughout the Miami game where going into the fourth quarter
- 9:58when they went to commercial, the players met in the middle of
- 10:01the field and they were about to fight.
- 10:03And, and to me, you know, if you, this is going to make you
- 10:07uncomfortable for those watching or when you re air this and post
- 10:10this again, I'm saying this for my football heads, man.
- 10:14In football, you got to go to a dog place.
- 10:16I'm a teddy bear. I'm a father, man, You know, I,
- 10:20I got 3 kids, you know what I'm saying?
- 10:21But when I, when I played, man, it was personal.
- 10:23Like it you got to, you got to be nasty.
- 10:26I feel like when you saw Tech against Miami, when they were
- 10:29mocking Miami, when Miami kept doing that thing like this and
- 10:32we were talking to the sideline, I was like, this looks like a
- 10:35Virginia Tech type of team. People don't remember.
- 10:39But again, die hard fans do. There was controversy about us
- 10:43joining the ACC in 2004 because the ACC, believe it or not,
- 10:47despite Clemson and those guys, was a soft conference.
- 10:50But G and Tech hat was known for having a brand where they would
- 10:53come into your stadium, they would take your turf and put it
- 10:56in the lunch pail. They would.
- 10:58They would talk shit, grab their crotch, talk to crash the
- 11:01coaches. Beat your, beat your ass that.
- 11:03Was not acceptable in the, you know, shirt and tie ACC crowd
- 11:08because a lot of those fan bases were very well.
- 11:11We don't do that except for Clemson and Florida State, which
- 11:15is why they dominated that conference for a while, for
- 11:17years. So you look at Virginia Tech,
- 11:20when they came in the first few years, they were 21 and one on
- 11:24the road in the ACC. That's the actual stat.
- 11:27Look it up. They were 21 and one on the
- 11:29road. So they would go in, the fans
- 11:31would take over your stadium, the players would take over your
- 11:34field. When I watched this last year on
- 11:36defense, and this is not a scheme thing.
- 11:38This is not should we wear orange or Almaroon.
- 11:41This is more so understanding the attitude and moxie you
- 11:45should play with. I'm going to tell you another
- 11:46game. You saw it for the first half,
- 11:48the Clemson game, Virginia Tech's defense was in their face
- 11:53and they will turn them over sacking them.
- 11:56Clemson couldn't do anything, but to Dabo and his staff's
- 12:00credit, in the second-half, they adjusted offense also wet the
- 12:03bed and didn't help the They only lost that game. 2414, Yeah.
- 12:08Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. 2414 so that means your defense gave you
- 12:14enough to win 24 points. In today's climate of college
- 12:17football, it's not a lot of points.
- 12:19So you know, Curtis, just a great question.
- 12:22It's a great topic, man, because at the end of the day, man, it's
- 12:26when I look at defense, I'm not trying to go back because you
- 12:29can't really hit people like you used to or targeted, but I just
- 12:32feel like you can. Hit people you can hit.
- 12:35People, you can play with the attitude, attitude, but.
- 12:38Attitude. That's important.
- 12:40Yeah, that that's true. I'm with you, Brian, and and and
- 12:43I'm with you, Victoria. But my thing is that we were a
- 12:46poor tackling football team last year.
- 12:48We we had a lot of missed tackles and poor tackling.
- 12:52You turn around and like I said, you just weren't physically
- 12:54strong and somebody like there weren't times when we hit people
- 12:58that they went backwards and you brought that out to me say, hey,
- 13:01look, watch, watch us hit this guy.
- 13:03And they don't go backwards like that.
- 13:05That's the difference when you're physically stronger than
- 13:09them to go but make plays like that.
- 13:11And we didn't do that. So let's go back to the ones we
- 13:13were talking about. You're up 20.
- 13:15You're I'm in New York. My wife damn near passed out
- 13:20walking to that, to that, to the stadium, right, because it was
- 13:24such a long walk. You're up 24 to 7 right with 7
- 13:29minutes and 37 seconds left in the third quarter and you let a
- 13:32guy who had not had a pass all damn year have a career game on
- 13:39you. Do any of y'all know who's
- 13:41Skinner of the skin? The wide receiver of
- 13:43Vanderbilt's last name was Skinner.
- 13:45You know. Did any of y'all know his name
- 13:47before that? Before that Saturday, right?
- 13:50You know, you know when Steve Smith did his breakdown, You
- 13:53know which game they showed the our game.
- 13:57Our game. Game OK, give me that right.
- 14:01You want to know the kid that Duke had a had a record quarter,
- 14:06a record quarter, right? He turns around right?
- 14:10Dude don't even get drafted right But guess what smoked it.
- 14:15Guys listen, it got to the point man where it the younger guys
- 14:21need to be playing and like y'all said, if a guy can't turn
- 14:25around, he's not going to make a play or he go elsewhere and
- 14:27that's fine, go wherever you got to go.
- 14:30But you turn around, you shouldn't go ahead and get folks
- 14:32off the field so you can go make plays, because those are games
- 14:34you should have won. That's right, You should have
- 14:36beat Syracuse. You should have.
- 14:38You should have beat Baby, right?
- 14:39You could have beat Duke. Man, I didn't even get a chance
- 14:42to crack a beer before they threw a bomb on our ass against
- 14:45Duke. I got to the stadium, wouldn't
- 14:47go get a beer. I turned around.
- 14:48We. Down 79.
- 14:50Chris, let me ask you a question.
- 14:51Go ahead. We were at the Duke game and
- 14:53this is, this is I was actually at my son's basketball
- 14:58tournament when he was prepping. We were up and I watched the
- 15:00game on my phone. We were in, we were in
- 15:03Connecticut or New York. We were in New York or
- 15:05Connecticut, right? And here's the thing, when you
- 15:09look at Duke, I'm asking you this question because you saw
- 15:12the it's a couple of questions. Did they fear Virginia Tech and
- 15:19that's AB? Did they also going to that game
- 15:23believe they were going to win based off what you saw?
- 15:27Listen man, if you turn around the first playoff scrimmage, you
- 15:30go ahead and drop, throw a damn 99-A9 route to a guy.
- 15:33You don't. You ain't afraid of them.
- 15:36That's my point. That was.
- 15:38The That was the very dude, Dwight.
- 15:40We turned around, we did. We ran 5 plays.
- 15:43I went to the stand, ordered a beer.
- 15:46I couldn't even crack it and that dude threw A-7890 yard.
- 15:49Bomb on it. So again, so again, just really
- 15:52quickly, because I know Curtis, you got to move us on, but I'm
- 15:54just saying. Well, it's about the second
- 15:56game. OK, scheme to scheme.
- 15:59What I'm saying is. Even in the.
- 16:02Notre Dame recent era Duke Duke, Duke always went into the
- 16:08Virginia Tech game is like, OK, this is going to be a tough one.
- 16:11We got to tighten our chin straps.
- 16:13I remember watching that game and I remember they were
- 16:16laughing at us when they were up and I'm like, yo, we have really
- 16:20hit near rock bottom when Duke and I'm not talking bad about
- 16:24Duke football. I think the quarterback shot a
- 16:26bird to the quarter, yeah. Yeah, dude, the dude, the dude
- 16:30had, he had like 100 and the dude had damn near 200 yards in
- 16:34the 1st and a quarter. Dude, he had three touchdowns,
- 16:37200 yards. He was like, yeah, it was crazy.
- 16:40They just felt that they could get vertical on those guys and
- 16:43go from there. Now, I can understand love and
- 16:45fell on one, but you can't fall. You're a Division One player.
- 16:48You can't fall in a situation like that.
- 16:50But the safety play was the safety play was minimal bad
- 16:53angles. It was it was so it was so
- 16:56egregious that some guys just didn't belong out there playing.
- 17:00And because they had because you had younger guys in the
- 17:03background that you were like, Hey, we don't know we're going
- 17:05to play them or we going to do this and move this guy.
- 17:07Listen, I'm I'm all for everybody making as much money
- 17:10as they possibly can. Just don't do it on my watch and
- 17:13lose. No damn football game,
- 17:14especially when I can't crack my beer yet.
- 17:17Stop somebody. There's no possible way.
- 17:19You don't even know who that dude is.
- 17:20I know Pablo Baccario play basketball.
- 17:23I have no clue who that wide receiver is because his ass
- 17:26didn't get drafted, but he had a career game on our ass.
- 17:29Yeah, he did. Speaking, Speaking of secondary,
- 17:31I think Brian has something going with that ad about that.
- 17:34Yeah. I mean, you know, we saw a lot
- 17:36of turnover to secondary. Some of it's probably a good
- 17:39thing we had two guys go out the door in the portal.
- 17:42I know we kind of hit it around a couple of those guys both in
- 17:45the tackling and getting getting some busted coverage, some blown
- 17:48coverage there with with Mosa Mansoor, but a lot of
- 17:52interception production went out the door too.
- 17:54It looks like we had 11 last year and only Dante with 1 is
- 17:58coming back on that team. A lot of about the new portal
- 18:01guys, especially in the safety room, how we feeling about these
- 18:07new guys and what Cephkis can do with some of those three safety
- 18:11looks and some of those more exotic pressures that he can get
- 18:17from from from those different levels in this defense.
- 18:21I'll let Chris kick this off. Yeah, go ahead, Say Chris, go
- 18:23ahead. Chris I I I love I love what you
- 18:26know, I got to get a nickname for coach C kids.
- 18:28I don't know Sam. I am.
- 18:29I don't know what it is, but I just got to get it because the
- 18:32dude loves football. But I just think you're going to
- 18:34put guys on the field that can go get after the ball.
- 18:38IBM he you know, he wants to gather.
- 18:40Dante's got to show that what he can be able to do and I know he
- 18:42wants to improve. I think your safety player is
- 18:45going to be so much more improved with Quinn Reddish
- 18:47being to the point of having a year full in the system and
- 18:50filling comfortable with it. And you're just going to have
- 18:54guys who who really attack the football.
- 18:56The one thing Dorian was great at, Dorian was great at coverage
- 19:00and and he got better as the year went along.
- 19:02But we're picking off passes, whereas Monsoon was going to
- 19:05gamble and and try to make plays and things of that nature.
- 19:08But I just think I think your secondary play is going to just
- 19:12be so much it's going to be exotic and because we're going
- 19:15to get into our prediction and people haven't seen it and and
- 19:19and Sam is going to throw different things at people and
- 19:21we don't go against a lot of great passes this year.
- 19:24So I think it's going to work to our benefit, to be honest with
- 19:27you. I think the secondary is going
- 19:28to be I think the secondary is going to it's going to have a
- 19:30couple of bumps and bruises. Like we don't have a flat out
- 19:33Blazers, you know, guys who can just flat out run.
- 19:35But I think with the different looks they're going to give us,
- 19:38it's going to give us time to get home and cause guys to make
- 19:41error throws and things of that nature.
- 19:43Dwight, before you jump in here, I'm going to ask, ask Chris.
- 19:46I'm going to give you one name. You tell me what you think about
- 19:48this guy, JoJo Krim. Loving, long, lean, athletic.
- 19:53He's he's, he is, he is everything you want in today's
- 19:58corner. He's going to be physical.
- 20:01He want, he, he has a nose. He wants the football.
- 20:04Like when the football's in the air, it's like, it's my
- 20:06football. And that's the difference that
- 20:09that is the difference. What I think with the
- 20:10cornerback, with the cornerbacks we have now, you know our best.
- 20:14Our best corner won't play a snap this year, in my opinion.
- 20:17The guy who was not going to play it and I don't think, and
- 20:20you know, with Josh Clark, with Josh Clark going out, I think he
- 20:22was going to having a breakout year.
- 20:25And you know, Josh is, Josh is just an athlete, man.
- 20:28Yeah, I, I loved what I saw from him kind of as the season was
- 20:31wrapping up there. So disappointed that, you know,
- 20:33injury got got to him there and he we're not going to see him
- 20:36this year. But Dwight, what you got on this
- 20:38one? Chris Conner stole my answer.
- 20:40What I was going to say, I I like, I like the schemes we're
- 20:43going to be running from the secondary.
- 20:45I feel like defensively, I feel like tech's going to be good
- 20:49this year overall, because I think even last year they show
- 20:52flashes. I'm I think the biggest thing
- 20:54for me is who takes on that role that APR had.
- 21:00Like, I feel like, you know, even though we won six games and
- 21:05probably should have won nine last year, I feel like he's one
- 21:08of those guys that showed up every week.
- 21:10I mean, he was actually playing out of position because, you
- 21:14know, looking back at, you know, not even when I played, but just
- 21:16looking at like his position at Tech, he's a, he played on the
- 21:20outside, but he's really a linebacker that was rushing A
- 21:23passer. He's not ADN, which is why
- 21:26sometimes you saw him struggle sometimes against run fits
- 21:29because you know, he's he he's athletic and he got off the ball
- 21:33quickly. His get off was elite, but you
- 21:36got to be able to play in space as well as be able to stop the
- 21:41run. But he's going to make himself
- 21:43some good money if he if he, you know, gets in the right
- 21:46situation. But Virginia Tech right now,
- 21:48back to your question B, at the end of the day, man, like I like
- 21:52what we're going to. I think defensively, look,
- 21:55you're going to steal someone, make me put my stuff out there
- 21:58before I'm ready to. But I'll say this.
- 22:00I feel like that is the difference in how Tech's going
- 22:03to beat South Carolina. A lot of times people talk about
- 22:06offense, but again this is no secret to you for but defense is
- 22:12always in college football the first three weeks ahead of the
- 22:15offense. Always, always.
- 22:18I feel like that is going to be text differential if they can
- 22:22win that game. I like schemes that they're
- 22:25bringing this year with what they're doing.
- 22:26I'd say this safety play has to be good, but they also have to
- 22:32be in a situation where I said they got to be able to rush the
- 22:35passer without the blitz. One thing that Buck Foster took
- 22:39pride in when he had Jason Worlds and Darrell Tapp and all
- 22:43those guys, even the Martin brothers and all them.
- 22:45When any coordinator on any level, especially college and
- 22:49pro, can get pressure on the passer with his front 4 now,
- 22:56because what happens is now when you get pressure with your front
- 22:594, you go to the, you go to that chalkboard and you get to your
- 23:02iPad. You're like, Oh my God, we are
- 23:05about to get real spooky out here and do different things,
- 23:10which puts so much pressure on the offensive line.
- 23:13But again, my question is who takes on that role?
- 23:16APR You know, he he kind of reminded you a lot of Cornell
- 23:20Brown, Daryl Tack, Virginia Tech, Jason Worldwam.
- 23:24Virginia Tech has a pass rusher. Even going back in the days,
- 23:27even though Bruce Smith played in the wide tackle 6, he played
- 23:29deep as a tackle. When they have the edge rusher,
- 23:32they are so elite on defense. But, but let's play this real
- 23:35quick. Real quick, everybody's like
- 23:38temperature expectations. You don't get APR 16 half sacks
- 23:41last year, but you got JC Price in that room.
- 23:44You got JC Price in that room. First of all, your boy, yes,
- 23:49yes. Take a look at some of the
- 23:51portal guys we brought in. Take a look at the Hitman kid
- 23:54from South Florida. And Dwight, I don't know if you
- 23:57got a chance yet. You seen the James Youngman
- 23:59interview we did a couple weeks ago?
- 24:01Yeah, I did. I did.
- 24:02You tell me that kid ain't a dog that's gonna go RIP somebody's
- 24:05head off. This is my feeling.
- 24:08And I'm looking and you look at the pieces.
- 24:10APR was great. People's was great.
- 24:12But you had Gilliam, who started growing up last year.
- 24:16Do y'all think this unit, it might not be an APR?
- 24:19Oh, my God. He is the best defensive end in
- 24:21the country. Yeah.
- 24:24I think this unit as it's built, you start looking at Copeland,
- 24:27Gilliam, Ace and Stevens, who look good.
- 24:30Come. On law.
- 24:33Come on. But this unit just produced
- 24:35overall better. Maybe not as many what you said
- 24:38about APR. He struggled at times when he
- 24:40got rain at. Yeah.
- 24:42So ho ho to answer your question, that's why I said what
- 24:44I say. I feel like defense defensively,
- 24:47that's going to be your story in a few weeks against South
- 24:49Carolina down in Atlanta. Because the reason why I'm
- 24:52saying that is because of JC Price and his scheme.
- 24:55And here's the thing, when I say who's going to the next APR, I'm
- 24:59saying more so because I always feel like a pass rusher and tech
- 25:02defense leads the way and then you can feed off that.
- 25:05That's why I named some of the guys that, you know, like I said
- 25:07with Cornell and those guys. But even though Fuga was a fan
- 25:11favorite, that's my brother. He's from up here in Northern
- 25:14Virginia. Fuga, you know, he would run
- 25:19stop, but he didn't get that pass rush up the middle a lot.
- 25:23So I feel like the guys you just named is Washington Porter,
- 25:25first of all, JC Price track record with him, even going back
- 25:31to when he coached at JMU and other schools at Marshall, he
- 25:34has always given teams in Tech, including Virginia Tech fix that
- 25:39three time, that three overtime game against Marshall, the
- 25:42defensive line coach was and Marshall was JC Price.
- 25:46So I feel very good. I, I don't know, I'm maybe I'm a
- 25:49little bit overconfident, which is rare for me, but I, I like
- 25:52our defensive scheme and what he'll be able to do with the D
- 25:55line. I just feel like, again, the
- 25:58bigger question is linebacker play with Lawrence.
- 26:01What's the kid that's been there forever?
- 26:02He's real long, the 65 linebacker, is he still?
- 26:05Here you talking about you talking about Burgos.
- 26:08Yeah, no, no, Lawson. Yeah.
- 26:13He's gone. So again, who are who are the I
- 26:16don't have the roster for who the linebacker?
- 26:18I was. Going to say so yeah, that's the
- 26:22next, next, next point that we was going to anyway.
- 26:24So great Segway, Dwight mainly talking about who's running the
- 26:28the linebacker room. You know, you got X running out
- 26:31of linebacker room now there you go.
- 26:33You talk about Caleb Woodson, Jaden Keller coming back.
- 26:38So we kind of know what those guys are.
- 26:40Also, Spencer's going to be there, picked up a couple guys
- 26:44out of the portal. So kind of what do we feel that
- 26:48room is going to look like with the new pieces and and the
- 26:52pieces that we know that are already there.
- 26:54So Chris, now you could kind of. Hey, hold on.
- 26:56Before Chris, before Chris answered that, can you just say
- 26:59it one more time because it sounds so good to my ears.
- 27:03You said who's? Who's the legend The the legend
- 27:07The the. X-Men Xavier DB.
- 27:12Yeah, boy, Chris, I just want him.
- 27:13I wanted the fans to hit that again because that's going to
- 27:16be, it's going to be just like when I said JC and everybody's
- 27:19like JC, like all right. And then now they we love you
- 27:22JC. Yeah, I'm just going to pick you
- 27:28back on. So with Xavier DB being there, I
- 27:31just think that just is the pedigree and the ability for him
- 27:36to coach. He is a young coach, but I think
- 27:38he's an excellent coach. But I think what's going to
- 27:40happen with this where's we would just go piggyback off the
- 27:43defensive line when we knew it was going to be 16 from APR and
- 27:47then you're going to get 4 to 5 with the pressure with people's
- 27:50upfront. I think next year it comes, you
- 27:52don't know where it's coming from because I think I think
- 27:54Junk is going to do it. Ben Bill's really good.
- 27:57I think there's I think the the surprise guy of the year is
- 28:00going to be Kamari Copeland. I do not think they have any
- 28:03idea how to block him. And that kid is crazy.
- 28:06So you got Gillum, you got him. You got any laws with the
- 28:08transition? So I think it's going to be
- 28:10able. You win football games by
- 28:12defending. What A&B gap block, A&B gap, run
- 28:17through A&B gap. That's how you win football
- 28:19games. So if you can't, if you turn
- 28:21around and you can get pressure up front on all of these mobile
- 28:24quarterbacks, you got sellers, Pavia King.
- 28:28If you can make him worry about it coming in his lap, then you
- 28:31can rally and get to that and get get to them.
- 28:34So I believe that's going to be fine.
- 28:35I think your linebacker room is going to be outstanding.
- 28:38I think you're going to be able to turn around and kind of
- 28:40unleash Burgos a certain kind of way.
- 28:43I think with Spencer, when you have when you got Spencer,
- 28:48you've got the Santiago kid, you got short kid, but Caleb Woodson
- 28:52is the key to this defense. I think Caleb Woodson is going
- 28:56to have a breakout season in the middle of that defense.
- 28:59His smarts, his his football IQ, everything that they pour into
- 29:04him. The dude is built like a brick
- 29:06shit house. Excuse my French, but that's the
- 29:08kid is the kid is cut up like dope money and I think he's just
- 29:11going to have a great year in in this in this in this defense.
- 29:15And I'll just add I've been driving the bandwagon.
- 29:19I got rims on my bandwagon. I got XM radio over there.
- 29:22I got I got a couple of things in the glove compartment the the
- 29:27the bandwagon I've been driving for Kayla Woodson is this to me.
- 29:31I remember Talley said this on the Twitter space.
- 29:34He did after a win. And and you know, we all text
- 29:37and stuff and he was just like AO Vic.
- 29:40He epitomizes what you talk about the Virginia Tech brand of
- 29:44deep. He he arrives with the ball with
- 29:46bad intentions. And there was some growing
- 29:48things here because he had to learn.
- 29:51People don't realize he had to learn the whole new position.
- 29:53And he's a tech loyal player because I can say this because
- 29:57I'm close to the family. He had a lot of financial
- 30:00options. He could have left.
- 30:02He has some some nice financial package presented to him.
- 30:06He wants to be at Tech and I think, and this is something
- 30:11these are one of these things where we all know because we
- 30:14we're media and we cover the game and we played it.
- 30:17And I'm not saying fans that you know, because they don't have
- 30:19that don't know, but there's certain things, you know, that's
- 30:23not going to be reported until the 30 for 30 or later on.
- 30:26And what I'm referring to in a positive way is Xavier D BS
- 30:30impact on Caleb is going to be insane because X is young enough
- 30:36and he and and real recognize real kids, young men and young
- 30:40women, you know, sports recognize when you're being
- 30:43coached by somebody that gets it.
- 30:45You know, I I love coaches that can interview with Xavier.
- 30:49DVI interviewed his old coach, coach Sexton for my victory life
- 30:53podcast and he talked about they had to kind of control him in
- 30:57practice. He's one of those guys you see
- 30:58and he's smiling. He's a class act.
- 31:01And then you see him and I, I miss watching him and, and Vince
- 31:07Hall play together. And I feel like you're going to
- 31:10see some of those bad intentions.
- 31:12You know, again, that's why I'm, I'm standing on business with
- 31:14this pick. When it comes to our defense.
- 31:16I think the difference for us this year early in the season is
- 31:19going to be our defense. Special teams is always
- 31:21important, but I think that defense, the linebackers, the D
- 31:24line, the scheme we're running is going to fit more of the
- 31:27personnel we have versus the previous game.
- 31:29Yeah, I'm, I'm with you, Dwight. I think, you know, you talked
- 31:32about a little bit earlier, but I think Caleb Woodson is going
- 31:34to be that tone setter of that defense.
- 31:38And you saw with with X and having somebody that played that
- 31:44role for Virginia Tech went on to do bigger things in the NFL
- 31:48and now is back here. And I think that's going to be
- 31:51big dividends in that linebacker room, especially for Caleb
- 31:54Woodson, because I again, I think he's going to be the tone
- 31:56setter. And you know, you talk about X
- 32:00being, you know, smile and everything, but like every good
- 32:03football player has a switch. And when you get on that field
- 32:06and you flip that switch and you become a different person.
- 32:09Well, and be just just to your point and I remember somebody
- 32:13was like, well, you know, you know, Victoria man, you know,
- 32:17pride can't hire everybody that used to be at tech.
- 32:19I said, listen to me, I'm not saying you have to hire
- 32:22everybody that played at tech. What I'm telling you is it's OK
- 32:27when Duke does it. Duke's entire staff, basketball
- 32:30is all Duke guys. All of them all.
- 32:33Of them. UNCUNC, all UNC guys, Miami
- 32:38football, mostly Miami guys. I'm saying you're not in a bad
- 32:42situation when JC Price, Pearson Prelo and Xavier EB are on your
- 32:48staff. These guys get it and they're
- 32:51young enough where they can relate to the players and they
- 32:54can teach it. And it's like JC Price has the
- 32:57coaching pedigree at DB, you know, and everybody made a big
- 33:00bill deal about pride not really knowing who Xavier DB was.
- 33:05I don't care about that. I was kind of surprised.
- 33:08But you know, sometimes coaches answer questions not thinking
- 33:10about how fans are going to react.
- 33:12But that's not his job to. I think you got to read the
- 33:15room, but you also got to understand, man, those guys get
- 33:17asked a lot of questions. He might not know Xavier DB the
- 33:21way we do. I just feel like, first of all,
- 33:23I'm going to say this shit. He's recruiting my nephew.
- 33:26My nephew loves the guy. My nephew loves him like Xavier,
- 33:30DB. He just understands how to
- 33:32relate to players, but he also knows how to play the position.
- 33:35And you talk about, again, we talk, always talk about DBU with
- 33:39Virginia Tech. It will never really get the
- 33:43consideration to be mentioned with the Penn State's, but
- 33:46Virginia Tech's linebacker play for decades was elite.
- 33:50That was also a position that was also a position that led the
- 33:54way when it came to good to great defenses.
- 33:58There was the three-year span when Tech was ranked number one,
- 34:01number one, and #2 in the nation overall in defense.
- 34:04Look at the linebackers they had.
- 34:08Absolutely, Absolutely. I don't know why people always
- 34:12feel like they got to reinvent the wheel on something.
- 34:14Like if your school is good at something, just fall into it.
- 34:17Like I feel like Virginia Tech is always going to be a school
- 34:22that should have a dual threat quarterback.
- 34:24I don't want to say your quarterback has to run every
- 34:26play, but I'm just saying Virginia Tech, unless you got
- 34:31Trevor Lawrence that wants to go to Virginia.
- 34:33Tech, I said if a gun could run. Like who?
- 34:37Yeah, but I'm just saying like, go do the stuff that has made
- 34:43you be successful. Like why are we trying to
- 34:46reinvent the wheel and go get 510 linebackers?
- 34:50Like you got to go get a linebacker that looks like AACC,
- 34:53Virginia Tech linebacker, you know what I'm saying?
- 34:56Like we go so far away from that and it's like I can understand
- 35:00if we was maybe in like California.
- 35:01No disrespect to them. I know they eat salads and stuff
- 35:04over there. Y'all in Virginia?
- 35:06You in Virginia, you should be able to open the door and find a
- 35:10lineman, somebody who can block a linebacker, somebody who like
- 35:13pushed. California got some Samoan
- 35:15linebackers there, so they. Understanding why are we going
- 35:19to, why are we going to Germany to get a a tackle in?
- 35:25Virginia. Like.
- 35:27I mean, I'm in Virginia a handful of times.
- 35:30Ohh. Forgot about that when somebody.
- 35:33Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, no, no.
- 35:35Well Hans was in Virginia though.
- 35:37He came to. He's talking about the kid that
- 35:39they literally was playing in Germany about 6-7 years ago.
- 35:44Came to Virginia when he was like 13.
- 35:46Oh, OK. OK, OK, OK.
- 35:48Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know what you're.
- 35:49Saying, man, I know what you're talking about, Canada and
- 35:51Georgia, I'm in Canada and Yugoslavia for when you are in
- 35:56Virginia. Like, I've came to Virginia
- 35:59plenty of times and if somebody's bigger than me and
- 36:02they 16 years old, I probably would see if they can block
- 36:06somebody. Hey, but look to your point
- 36:08though, you know, and This is why I said this before and this
- 36:11is one thing I'm in the DMV, Northern Virginia, DC, Maryland,
- 36:14but I still go home. I'm a 757 guy.
- 36:16I'm Ava guy eight O 4. And I've said this in many
- 36:20Twitter spaces and even on different platforms like this
- 36:22you mentioned in your backyard. You look at the kid.
- 36:25Damn my man, I'm getting forgetting names, but the kid
- 36:28that played the LC Byrd wanted to stay title with him.
- 36:31He was a linebacker at Virginia Tech.
- 36:33They always joked about how, like, yes, how he never looked
- 36:38apart until game day and he was an animal or one of my favorite.
- 36:41I always butchered his name. So I called him little Palomalu
- 36:44Munawaka Tikatuku from Salem with all the hair, right?
- 36:48Yeah. But like, again, it's a guy.
- 36:50He looked like a wild animal when he played, but he set the
- 36:53tone. Those kind of linebackers, all
- 36:55the two quality 2 elite linebackers that really didn't
- 37:00check the boxes with all that athleticism at the same time
- 37:04they were able to play that position.
- 37:07You know what I'm seeing as far as just being able to really
- 37:10make that imprint in that mic position, that linebacker
- 37:13position Virginia Tech has always had when their defense
- 37:16was great, good and great, great corner play, safety play.
- 37:20But yeah, I see the name things wrong.
- 37:23Like at the end of the day, man, like, yeah, yeah.
- 37:28So I mean, the linebacker play to me and DB and those guys,
- 37:31like I, I said, I always felt like man, prior you got to have
- 37:36your staff, you got to get your guys and and you got to get
- 37:39guys, not your boys, but people that really understand Virginia
- 37:44Tech football. This is why again, you look at
- 37:47guys like I mentioned Duke and Carolina and programs like them.
- 37:50I'm not even mocking them right now.
- 37:51I'm just saying like those dudes.
- 37:53I mean, say what you want about Shire.
- 37:55I noticed in the Duke basketball, I'm talking about
- 37:57like Final Fours understand what it means to be a hokey or a Blue
- 38:01Devil or like we laugh because I know I can have fun with this
- 38:06dude. And the people talking about
- 38:08back when the coke was pure and all that.
- 38:10But when I watched Michael Irvin, when I watched Michael
- 38:13Irvin when he when they were playing, when they played Cal,
- 38:16that Cal and that game got close.
- 38:18He was on the ground humping the ground and begging the defense
- 38:21to get a stop and sweating like TD Jakes.
- 38:24And I was like, Hey, look, hey, I can relate to Irving because
- 38:31y'all don't see me when I'm in this house watching tech, right?
- 38:35That is my only team. So to me, my daughter's
- 38:38recording me and she's the better not ever released those
- 38:40record. When I am, I am, I am when I
- 38:44when I watched Tech, I watched the games all the time and two
- 38:47Fast 1 fan where I'm like, that's a catch and I'm yelling.
- 38:53And then I watched them again as a media guy that covers the game
- 38:57and watches and I take notes and look at stuff and trends and
- 38:59things. But I'm more Michael Urban when
- 39:02it comes. And there's a lot of guys like
- 39:04me that played in that university to understand what it
- 39:06means to be a hokey and how the defense should be and how the
- 39:09offensive line should go. JC, what happened?
- 39:13This is my school. I love my school.
- 39:16You know, he was emotional. People don't understand that,
- 39:19but I think they did after they saw that.
- 39:21Like, that guy was able to salvage the season and get us to
- 39:24a bowl game, but he understands how to coach, too.
- 39:27So I just feel like, yeah, like the defense is going to lead the
- 39:30way this year. Defense leading the way.
- 39:32All right. Well, we get to the end 2 hours
- 39:3537 minutes later. Wow.
- 39:37Not I'm not shocked. Ain't nobody in this room
- 39:39shocked, no doubt. No doubt.
- 39:42But it's only one thing that matters because we talked about
- 39:45players, we talked about frustrations with last year, we
- 39:48talked about changes, what we can do better.
- 39:50One thing that matters, it's wins and it's losses.
- 39:53And I'm old. Shelton was nice enough for he
- 39:55had a dip off. He gave his prediction, Shelton
- 39:58saying 7 and 5, four and four and eight.
- 40:02So. Dwight Chris, y'all play rock
- 40:05paper scissors, but wins and losses got to make a prediction
- 40:10if you're allowed. You want to go first.
- 40:16No, you go first because I, I got my answer, but I, I have my
- 40:19answer early, but go ahead because I'm, I'm looking at the
- 40:21schedule right now. Go ahead, Chris.
- 40:22I'm looking at the schedule again.
- 40:24The schedule, the schedule I look at like this, I'm going to
- 40:26give it to you like this. South Carolina, you win.
- 40:30OK, You beat Bandy, right? You beat ODU.
- 40:33You beat Wofford. You beat Wake Forest.
- 40:36OK, You beat Georgia Tech. OK, you turn around after
- 40:42Georgia Tech, you play Cal. You come back and play Cal,
- 40:46right, You play Cal. I beat Cal.
- 40:51The first game that I that I'm not confident in is Louisville
- 40:55because I think Louisville has got a, a monster of a football
- 40:58team. I think you beat Louisville.
- 41:00You make new memories when you beat Miami in your building,
- 41:04right? You go down to Florida State,
- 41:06right? Because I don't think they're
- 41:08that good this year. And if Castellanos is still
- 41:10playing, you beat Florida State and you beat Virginia.
- 41:16You're 11 and one right? Everybody shut their ass up,
- 41:21right and you get a chance to go play Clemson in Charlotte.
- 41:24I'm going to just tell you how confident I am on that.
- 41:27I already got my room book for Charlotte already.
- 41:30That's how confident I'm on that now.
- 41:34Now I'll put you like this so y'all understand how I mean
- 41:37about this. I only want to drink bourbon and
- 41:40smoke cigars. All right, that's my prediction.
- 41:44I'm going to go back down to Charlotte again and we might
- 41:48lose the Clemson, but we're going to give him a fair fight.
- 41:50The reason I feel that way and I know all Chris's just pie in the
- 41:55sky and we got to go prove it. We do.
- 41:58But the first six weeks of the season, they have not seen what
- 42:01Steve Kiss is going to throw at him.
- 42:03They have no clue what we they they're going to throw at them.
- 42:06And then that gives us time to jail and be who we are.
- 42:09I'm not I'm not afraid of South Carolina at all.
- 42:13I've been saying that they are returning that that football
- 42:17team that was so great last year that won nine games.
- 42:19You got 9 new starters. Dylan Stewart is an absolute
- 42:23animal, but I got to block him. Them other cats that they got,
- 42:27we some of them cats came from the 757.
- 42:30I watched them play and they went great here.
- 42:33They just went down to down to South Carolina and got an offer
- 42:36because another kid was down there that I sit down there on a
- 42:39plane ticket and then all everybody saw and they thought
- 42:42they were great. So I don't, I think South
- 42:43Carolina's room on defense, I think we're going to have enough
- 42:46offense to beat them. I think you go back and you shut
- 42:48Pavy up and you go and beat him. I just believe you can go 11 and
- 42:52one with this, with this, with this schedule.
- 42:54The only game that I am not confident we can win out
- 42:57outright is Louisville. Everybody else, let's line it
- 43:00up. So that's a great, that's great.
- 43:03I I, you know, that's, that's good.
- 43:05That's, that's good energy. I'll say this.
- 43:09I thought about this question long and hard because I'm doing
- 43:11another segment. I'm doing more of a segment on
- 43:13Thursday. It's a radio show.
- 43:14Do you know about that? With our shout out to our guy
- 43:17Rick Watson. Yeah, But like at the end of the
- 43:19day, Virginia Tech, I said this last year when everybody said,
- 43:24Oh my God, Virginia Tech now we got Miami coming up.
- 43:27I said they'll probably beat Miami.
- 43:29And everybody was like, yo, what do you smoke?
- 43:31I said because Virginia Tech in the new era will show up because
- 43:35they recognize the name. It's the inferior for the teams.
- 43:38So number, number. And then, you know, bigger than
- 43:41that, take the emotional aspect out of it.
- 43:45I've been around this game a long time.
- 43:46No disrespect to anybody. Sons of Saturday and all these
- 43:49other podcasts, you know, Tree of Life, all these other teams
- 43:52and podcasts that keep popping up.
- 43:54I am the OG of this. I've been around this.
- 43:56I helped build this program. I've connected to football
- 44:00alumni and kept them connected, You know, kind of been like the
- 44:03unofficial ambassador voice of the Hokies for a long time.
- 44:07So one thing I'm excited about is the fact that Virginia Tech's
- 44:12opening the season against a a very good, recognizable
- 44:15opponent, Beamer always said and other coaches said you always
- 44:19prepare better when you're playing the team with the name.
- 44:23I I remember being dejected when we lost the Sugar Bowl against
- 44:26Michigan because I felt like that could have been a great
- 44:30win. Was that a great Virginia Tech
- 44:31team that was 11 win team that lost twice at Clemson, but
- 44:35beating Shoelace in Michigan, that would have been a great win
- 44:38for the brand. We fell short a false start on
- 44:41the 1 yard line. You never know.
- 44:44You know, you win that game with Logan Thomas and David Wilson
- 44:46and company, South Carolina. I really feel like as much as I
- 44:52love Shane Beamer, he's a close friend of mine.
- 44:54I love him. This is a big game for him.
- 44:58And sometimes that emotional factor, even though he can
- 45:01downplay, it's hard. It's hard, It's a big game.
- 45:03And more importantly, how many times has everybody pick one
- 45:07team to run through another team?
- 45:09Absolutely. Georgia Tech upsets Florida
- 45:12State in Dublin, Oregon or Alabama.
- 45:15When we used to open up with Alabama, it felt like every in
- 45:17the Chick-fil-A kickoff, Virginia Tech was leading or up
- 45:20or you know, it was a close game.
- 45:23I don't really think Tech is going to be overpowered by South
- 45:28Carolina #1 because it's the first game.
- 45:31It's it's when you want to play a team.
- 45:33When I look. When I look at Virginia Tech
- 45:36right now and the schedule, and I'm not saying I don't and I
- 45:39never liked this statement. The schedule is favorable and
- 45:43you got a lot of win. No, it's not a fuck.
- 45:45I'm not saying like I don't believe in favorable because
- 45:47some of them are easy getting to do the tough ones.
- 45:50I I feel like when I look at the schedule, they're they're solid
- 45:55teams to questionable teams in Louisville and Georgia Tech.
- 45:59Everyone has athletes, everybody's on scholarship, but
- 46:02I see a lot of games that Tech has the opportunity to win.
- 46:07Here's the thing, South Carolina, they come out and win
- 46:11the game. I see momentum where they can
- 46:14win 9 plus games. I really feel that way because a
- 46:17win like that can jump start you into a lot of confidence.
- 46:20Not because South Carolina are world biggest because of the SEC
- 46:24brand. The fact that wins always help
- 46:26you get confident. And I also think too, though, if
- 46:30they come out and they're flat and they have a game like you
- 46:33saw when they played Tennessee in that game, that was the
- 46:36largest crowd ever watched a football game.
- 46:39I thought the moment was too big.
- 46:41They had five turnovers that game.
- 46:42That was Fuente's first year. And.
- 46:45Wet the bed and I felt like that was a game where they were
- 46:48overwhelmed by the moment. Now that team had a lot of
- 46:50talent and that team had the Edmonds brothers and Greg
- 46:54Strowman and Ricky Wall able to still do something where they
- 46:58won the Coastal and they went on to have a great win against
- 47:02Arkansas. That's yet to be seen.
- 47:04So right now I feel like Tech's going to be in the mix and win 8
- 47:08plus games. I feel like if they struggle and
- 47:13they and they get under, they come out underwhelming.
- 47:15This is a 7 to 6 win team because if you if you start the
- 47:21season off, you know my my for the record, my wins total is 8.
- 47:25But I'm just the disclaimer. If you start the season off and
- 47:31you lose that game against South Carolina and it's closed and
- 47:35they pull away and win 27 to 17, then it's like, OK, do you have
- 47:41enough leadership in the locker room to overcome that?
- 47:43Like Virginia Tech did in O4 when they lost to USC or in 95
- 47:47when they lost O and two to start.
- 47:49I'm naming teams that recover or Boise State when they they won
- 47:54eleven wins. I don't know who the leaders are
- 47:56every year when I do these pre game shows on podcast, he would
- 48:00talk about we got this guy, the measurables this players this
- 48:03and we got this higher. I am always so God takes my last
- 48:07breath going to talk about leadership because from whether
- 48:10it's the NFL high school pro, even in media podcast and if
- 48:15your team is your leaders are good, the showings going to be
- 48:18good. I'm hoping KD drones takes with
- 48:21a more of a leadership position. I feel like Virginia Tech can
- 48:24win eight games, ODU, Vanderbilt, I think UV is going
- 48:29to be better, but I still think they got a little bit of a, you
- 48:31know, a challenge with the culture down there trying to
- 48:33figure it out, you know, but I feel like there's games that
- 48:36tech can win. You owe Miami one, but I feel
- 48:40like I but I feel like with those games, they'll get up.
- 48:43Curtis. I feel like those games tech
- 48:45always get up. I just feel like right now Tech,
- 48:49if I just say is the 8 win team because I feel like last point,
- 48:53I'm going to shut up. That pride understands.
- 48:58Coaches know what's being whispered.
- 48:59They know that you, it's not about being scared and on a hot
- 49:03seat. It's understand that you know,
- 49:04you need to really seize this moment.
- 49:06You need to lock in and block out all the noise.
- 49:09And I feel like Tech can really make something happen.
- 49:12They're recruiting well and the energy is good, but you a game,
- 49:16a win against South Carolina at 3:30 when everyone's watching,
- 49:22with everyone watching and the whispers around Virginia Tech,
- 49:27you win that game. And I know I'm not trying to
- 49:29make it like a national championship.
- 49:32It really changes your perception within seconds.
- 49:34It's true within seconds. Every Tech win for all the
- 49:40coaches, including Fuente. When they upset my Florida State
- 49:43at that time or when they won games, when they when, when
- 49:47Fuente was there and they beat Miami on Thursday night and they
- 49:50sacked that quarterback from Miami nine times like that, it
- 49:54changes perception. He does.
- 49:56Within seconds, within seconds, because of the age of social
- 49:59media, you beat South Carolina Sunday afternoon, 330 ain't shit
- 50:04going on. You win that game and all of a
- 50:07sudden, wow, what a win by the Hokies.
- 50:09Could they be back and all of a sudden and you lose that game,
- 50:13You can still go to a good bowl because I still think I'm going
- 50:16to go to a bowl. But I just feel like you miss an
- 50:19opportunity. You, you, you have to take them.
- 50:23You, you got it. You got to take away the stigma
- 50:25of not being beaten up a Power 14A, Power 4 conference team.
- 50:30You, you beat the stigma of a, of a close game and you just go
- 50:34out and outplay somebody. That's, that's what we missing.
- 50:38That's what that's making memories.
- 50:40That's the stuff that y'all used to do, bro, I, I was a Carolina
- 50:43fan, dude. I used to watch that dude #7
- 50:47right? Get wicked.
- 50:49I was like, I don't even know what Virginia Tech was, but you,
- 50:53that guy, go out there and just go win football games or damn,
- 50:57they win football game. We've had so many close call.
- 50:59I've learned so many close call losses here in the last two
- 51:03years. It made my stomach turn.
- 51:05You go and beat South Carolina. One quick point about my my
- 51:09cousin and what he did. He was surrounded in both years,
- 51:14especially that first year, by Corey Moore, Carl Bradley and
- 51:18Engelberger and Company and Jamelle Smith.
- 51:22Andre. The reason why, the reason why I
- 51:25brought up the fact that I'm the OG of this shit and I'm not
- 51:27taking shots to anybody else on any of the podcast is because I
- 51:30helped build the program and I know I know what it takes when
- 51:34it comes to, you know, getting your team in position to make a
- 51:38run. I've been there for the hard
- 51:40times. I've covered the program as a
- 51:42columnist. I've been in the locker room.
- 51:44I know those players. I know what it takes.
- 51:46And again, I feel like Virginia Tech desperately needs to win
- 51:50this game because I'm going to tell you something.
- 51:52I know this will be true and I have not talked to Shane, but I
- 51:55know this will be true regardless of who they lost.
- 51:59Shane is going to take this game personal and he's going to
- 52:02unleash every opportunity fake field and if they get up he's
- 52:07going to run it up because he was never even called to even
- 52:12interview for the job. Hey, I got no, I got Hey,
- 52:15listen, I got no problem with with with little dude wanting to
- 52:19wind it up. I understand that.
- 52:22I ain't never liked the fact in in that situation with him is
- 52:26that he talks so down and dirty about this program and I didn't
- 52:31know anything about him not getting the opportunity.
- 52:33I'm sorry. Well, I mean.
- 52:34You know, the thing the thing about is I was recruited by Tom
- 52:37O'Brien when he was at UVS. He's a coordinator.
- 52:39He talked down on the program and he went to Boston College
- 52:43and he continued. I know for you that's a personal
- 52:45matter. Shane love, listen, listen,
- 52:48listen, listen. I know this this might do.
- 52:49He got victory life here. Shane loves Shane loves Virginia
- 52:53Tech, but right now he ain't supposed to.
- 52:55And listen, I still take it personal.
- 52:58You got to understand. So they whether whether he might
- 53:00have gotten called, but I text him, he said I haven't heard
- 53:03anything. Brendan Hill and Kevin Jones or
- 53:06Deandra Hall. I think it was Brendan Hill and
- 53:07Kevin Jones did a video, might have been Diazo and Brennan Hill
- 53:11about why Tech should be hired. Now I'm going to tell you about
- 53:13the energy Shane brings. The AD got Shane brought back in
- 53:18because the players at South Carolina, former players, alumni
- 53:22had a Zoom meeting with the AD to say you better hire Shane.
- 53:27So when he coached, when Frank, his dad had to throw surgery,
- 53:31the energy around that program on that Music City Ball, when
- 53:34Cincinnati was a nine win team and we were six and six, Tech
- 53:38came out and bought Greg Stroman stole the show.
- 53:41But my point being, Shane had that energy.
- 53:44What I'm saying is this shit right here, what I'm doing, you
- 53:48know, you can't be doing this. You got to throw that pin down
- 53:52and you're going to have to do some fake filled whatever it
- 53:54takes to win that game. It's got to be.
- 53:57Personal you got to get a signature.
- 53:59You got to get a signature win. Remember I said there's two?
- 54:03Remember, I said this, There's two things he needs as a head
- 54:06coach, a Mount Rushmore recruit and signature witness.
- 54:10And because all this, hey, man, gosh darn it, we're going to a
- 54:14bowl game again. Those boys fought hard.
- 54:16Don't know about this is for the first time I've been I've been
- 54:19around this program blowing anybody covering that in.
- 54:23The podcast. Nobody.
- 54:25Sons, dads of Saturday, nobody has been around this program as
- 54:29long as me. And I'm telling you right now,
- 54:31when it comes to Virginia Tech football, you got to seize the
- 54:35moment. We, this has been the lowest
- 54:38amount of energy around this program going into a season in
- 54:42the history since 28. And one, there is no momentum
- 54:46and energy. None.
- 54:47Nobody was talking about Tech this year.
- 54:50We're not even at like, hey, watch out for the Hokies.
- 54:52I don't mean to go too long, Curtis, I'm sorry, but I'm just
- 54:56telling you this is important. Not just to me, but there are a
- 55:00lot of people who feel the way I do who have spent a lot of money
- 55:04and time, who kept buying into the hype and buying T-shirts and
- 55:08flights and tickets when shit was delinquent in the payment
- 55:11section of their bills. And they still drove to cities
- 55:15and things like that. You can play with people as
- 55:18like, hey, you going to Atlanta? I'm like, no, I'm not number
- 55:21one. I can't afford it right now.
- 55:22I could if I wanted to, but like to me, I'm I'm going to be
- 55:26watching the game like this. I can y'all.
- 55:27I'm going to be just like this. Better stop man.
- 55:32Better stop bro. No, I'm.
- 55:34Chris, make him on, Make him unfold the arms, is what he's
- 55:37saying. Maybe.
- 55:39Unfold the. Arms take him unfold.
- 55:40Chris, Chris, you can't. You can't listen.
- 55:42I know. I was texting Tally and I saw
- 55:45the fans on TV. Tally called.
- 55:48We talked that Monday, He said. Virginia Tech fans had taken
- 55:53over Tennessee. It was so many I, I know, but I,
- 55:58I know, but I'm telling you, I wasn't right.
- 56:00And then what happened? We wet the bed up 2720 all the
- 56:06talk, all the commercials, all the You can no longer do that
- 56:10for you can't do. That you can't.
- 56:14You got to win you. Got to win, That's the most
- 56:17important. Thing when we look at this
- 56:18schedule, so we look at we look at the schedule we we already
- 56:20know right out the gate we need to get a signature win.
- 56:24But what I want to see too and what we haven't done in the
- 56:27Brent Pryor and what we haven't done really recently is have a
- 56:31good run throughout of conference and through
- 56:33September, right. We we have played below average
- 56:37football for the majority of September during the Pryor
- 56:40regime. Absolutely.
- 56:41I don't I don't think that's an understatement.
- 56:43I thought we have not played very well out of conference.
- 56:46Even when we got wins, they weren't pretty wins.
- 56:49They weren't good wins. Even against teams that you, you
- 56:51know, you call them easy wins. You know, out of conference, you
- 56:54know, the Marshalls, the ODUS, whatever, they weren't all
- 56:57pretty wins. We got to go out there and we
- 57:00got to set the tone against South Carolina, get that
- 57:02signature win, but we got to keep that run going through the
- 57:05through September. I want to get the NC State of
- 57:08September 27th with a 0 in that loss column.
- 57:12Absolutely. That's what we need to do.
- 57:14And then start ACC playoffs strong with the win there.
- 57:16If you get through September and you don't have a blemish on that
- 57:19record, that's when you start thinking, all right, well, baby,
- 57:22maybe this is the Virginia Tech that we want them to be.
- 57:25This is the Virginia Tech we haven't seen in a while, but
- 57:28that's what I want to see. Go ahead.
- 57:31Go ahead, Tyler, Go ahead. Just just as simple as it can
- 57:35get. If you win that first game, you
- 57:37win 8. If you lose that first game,
- 57:39you're going to win six. That's where I met with
- 57:41Virginia. That's tally right there.
- 57:43That's kind of what I said, right?
- 57:44Well. I think, but I think what you
- 57:48said also too, Dwight, is if you get that signature you bring to
- 57:54the national spotlight people are talking about, your
- 57:56confidence grows, expectation grows, you feel good about
- 58:01yourself going into the and. You get ranked Bill and you get
- 58:03ranked. Now that they'll keep us out,
- 58:06Listen, listen. Preseason polls are bullshit
- 58:09because there's eleven teams from the SEC currently getting
- 58:11ranked. There ain't 11 good.
- 58:13Teams in that welcome conference, I hate it, you know,
- 58:15and I'm not, I'm not going to debate you on that.
- 58:17I'm just saying like you get into position to be ranked if
- 58:20you followed up with Vanderbilt, win, followed up against.
- 58:24That no, that's, that's right. No.
- 58:26That's that's real. You go to it.
- 58:28You go to it you. Can put a number.
- 58:31Because again, when's the last time we've been ranked?
- 58:33I mean, listen, listen, listen. I'm, I'm, I'm, I remember, I
- 58:39remember when one of my favorite movies called.
- 58:42It was then said when he played the boxer.
- 58:45What about? The hurricane.
- 58:47Hurricane, Yeah. So, so remember, remember the
- 58:50scene? It was a final appeal.
- 58:52And his two lawyers are outside the window and he's sitting
- 58:55there like this. Denzel won the goat of acting.
- 58:57Yes, Sir. So he took the jailhouse phone
- 59:00and he said he banged on that joint.
- 59:02He banged on he. Said that's right, banged, he
- 59:05said. Look.
- 59:05He said look, we do it and I'm and I'm done.
- 59:09If it doesn't work out, I'm going to live and die here.
- 59:11But I'm paraphrasing the scene, right?
- 59:13That's right, yeah. Hey man, Chris, you were a
- 59:16Carolina fan. You came in when you saw my cuss
- 59:18set the world on fire when you have been in my position.
- 59:22I'm Denzel behind the phone man. We ain't got no more.
- 59:25Time, bro, I don't know listen, so I know tech will go on long
- 59:28after I'm here. What I'm saying to you is this
- 59:32program means way more than what people realize to me.
- 59:35Like I got 2° from there. I met my wife there, my family,
- 59:39everyone's going there. On top of it, I recruited 2 of
- 59:42my cousins there. More importantly, the bowl
- 59:45games, all different things we helped build there.
- 59:47For me, I spoke there. I was a keynote speaker on the
- 59:519/11 Memorial Day. I was a speaker there, right?
- 59:54Article written about me. I was the Virginia Tech
- 59:58ambassador when Fuente was there.
- 59:59I did a football alumni panel. I covered the game with Kyle
- 1:00:04Bailey. Pregame show.
- 1:00:05I've driven a Tech at 4:00 in the morning to do a pregame show
- 1:00:09and watch them blow a blow a lead again or lose to East
- 1:00:12Carolina. So I have given my life.
- 1:00:15I'm not knocking the newcomers, but to me, I'm Denzel with the
- 1:00:19phone. I'm hitting this, this, this
- 1:00:21jailhouse phone. And I'm like, hey man.
- 1:00:24I'm tired. I'm tired of being irrelevant.
- 1:00:27I am tired of like, we didn't execute and we have to make
- 1:00:31better plays. I can't because way.
- 1:00:35Forest has surpassed us, Duke has surpassed us, Marshall has
- 1:00:40surpassed us. We are not supposed to be in
- 1:00:43this position. This is unacceptable.
- 1:00:47It's I'm sorry, it's I don't want to hear about in our money
- 1:00:50and budget, Ricky Leblu listed the thing.
- 1:00:55We got money now Ricky's my boy. I'm just saying I'm not mocking
- 1:00:59Ricky. I'm saying like we got money and
- 1:01:02I know what wits talking about. I'm talking about stop it man,
- 1:01:06like yo stop playing with people's emotions man.
- 1:01:08Y'all you didn't understand what this program and living up here,
- 1:01:11my dad and my father-in-law are Redskins fans, Commanders fans.
- 1:01:15I was one when I was a kid, there was a guy that was crying
- 1:01:19when they clinched the playoffs, when they beat Atlanta and he
- 1:01:22was in the stands crying. I was looking, I wasn't at the
- 1:01:24game, but I remember I saw it on on TikTok and he turned to his
- 1:01:28boy. He was like, and he just started
- 1:01:29rubbing his boy. He was like, I know if you've
- 1:01:31been a Commanders fan like my friend, you're talking about
- 1:01:36decades of irrelevance. Your only Super Bowl win was to
- 1:01:40beat the Cowboys or play the Eagles close.
- 1:01:43I don't want Tech to become that when beating UVA is people
- 1:01:47online. That is disgusting to me.
- 1:01:52I do not want that. I used to wake up on forget when
- 1:01:56I play. I used to wake up on Sundays
- 1:01:59back when the paper came out, even with the social media stuff
- 1:02:02and say OK, oh they lost, they lost.
- 1:02:04We should be 18 tomorrow, we should be 17.
- 1:02:08We oh snap we might be #9 now I'm like damn dawg, we are three
- 1:02:13and five. Can we even get to a bowl at
- 1:02:21this point? Yeah, well, I think what what?
- 1:02:24Dwight, you've again, you've been through every a season of
- 1:02:28your life up at tech me. You know, Chris, you got a kid
- 1:02:33there. Now you're seeing a season of
- 1:02:35his life and then us three up here and and the fourth he gone.
- 1:02:39He he got to get his beauty sleep.
- 1:02:41So that's for sure someone's got to get to bed.
- 1:02:43But for 30 years of our life, 30 years, right?
- 1:02:49A lot of that 30 years, it was good times.
- 1:02:51It was ten wins. It was Orange bowls, it was
- 1:02:53Sugar bowls. It was top notch players.
- 1:02:55It was doing what you just talked about.
- 1:02:57We're going to be #5 this week, we're 6 and up USC.
- 1:03:03The rest fucked us. We got screwed by them.
- 1:03:06We want to get back to relevancy.
- 1:03:09And I think what you're saying, what you're saying, what you
- 1:03:11went with your, your your monologue there on South
- 1:03:14Carolina is why that game is so important.
- 1:03:17It's not the Vanderbilt game last year.
- 1:03:18If we beat Vanderbilt last year and we go seven and five, people
- 1:03:22are just like you beat Vanderbilt, South Carolina's
- 1:03:2413th in the country. Lenore Sellers is the biggest
- 1:03:27fucking thing in quarterback. You mentioned Dylan Stewart, the
- 1:03:29biggest DN they have everybody looking at them.
- 1:03:32You go down there and you bump them off the heads turn and say,
- 1:03:37are they back? Because I said on this program
- 1:03:38about a year ago, when will we know we're back?
- 1:03:42There will be a moment. There will be a moment in time.
- 1:03:47We going to know it in the moment, probably not, but you're
- 1:03:49going to reflect on it. And I think that's what you're
- 1:03:51saying, because that game it is, it's going to be a massive
- 1:03:55audience. It's going to be a massive
- 1:03:57audience. At 3:00, the stadium is going to
- 1:03:59be packed. If you go down there and you
- 1:04:03pull off that win, it puts people on notice and how you
- 1:04:09pull it off. I don't care how beat them by
- 1:04:1330, beat them by 1. I don't care about how much you
- 1:04:17win by. Nobody cares.
- 1:04:19So Curtis, that goes, that goes to, yeah, I would say so it goes
- 1:04:23to this. We've heard from a couple of
- 1:04:25different people. What's your number?
- 1:04:28I'm at 8. Eight wins.
- 1:04:30I'm at eight wins this year. Yeah, I'm, I'm with Dwight.
- 1:04:32I'm with eight wins this year. Brian.
- 1:04:35I'm liking 8 as well. I'm right.
- 1:04:37I'm right at 8:00. I could be talked into 9.
- 1:04:40I could be talked into 7. Like I said, I think the the
- 1:04:43South Carolina game is going to be the tone setter and that's
- 1:04:45going to really kind of depend on how the rest of those chips
- 1:04:48fall this season. But I'm going to say.
- 1:04:50So real quick. Go ahead, go ahead, I hope.
- 1:04:52Me, Dwight, Brian and Talia are all wrong, Chris, and you're
- 1:04:57right. Because I'm just saying I'm just
- 1:05:00go ahead, go. Ahead, I'm not one of the There
- 1:05:02are a lot of people out there and we see them all the time I
- 1:05:05don't want the team to win. I want that coach to get fired.
- 1:05:07I don't like what we're doing Fuck those people.
- 1:05:10Fuck you if you're one of those people you ever pull against
- 1:05:12your team, get the. Fuck out.
- 1:05:14Because it's bullshit. Because I remember 2021, there
- 1:05:19were so many people. I want Fuente to lose.
- 1:05:21Why do you? Want our team to lose?
- 1:05:24Why do you want do it? And you love to lose.
- 1:05:27Maybe it'll. Change things.
- 1:05:28No, it's not. You're just going to fall deeper
- 1:05:31and deeper into irrelevant. Deeper and deeper.
- 1:05:33Yeah, my thing is this, man, I just believe like this and I'm
- 1:05:38going to say this and we can get up out of here.
- 1:05:41You have 4 guys get relieved in a position if you're better up
- 1:05:45front, if you're better up front of your offensive line, which I
- 1:05:48totally believe you will be, that makes second.
- 1:05:51That makes second and four third and three a lot easier.
- 1:05:56If you have an offensive coordinator that has a plan and
- 1:05:59an idea what he's doing and he's and he's knowledgeable because
- 1:06:02that was the biggest thing. We didn't have a knowledgeable,
- 1:06:05credible experience. OC you have that now you've got
- 1:06:08a defensive genius like big just sitting up at night thinking of
- 1:06:14kind of daggum defenses with C kiss and he wants these guys to
- 1:06:18understand it be simple and play fast and you got a bunch of
- 1:06:23kids, man that don't don't have this or allure about the SEC
- 1:06:27being because a lot of them got recruited to the Seca lot of the
- 1:06:31SEC pissed off a bunch of them said they weren't big enough,
- 1:06:35they wouldn't miss and they willing to go down there and
- 1:06:37bust their ass. I'm just telling you this is a
- 1:06:40double digit win team. I'm standing on business.
- 1:06:45No, I'll say this, I'll give Chris props on this.
- 1:06:49The year they went seven and six prize second year when they went
- 1:06:54seven and six, they had a losing record when Don V had his live
- 1:07:00and Chris said they're going to a bowl after what I say today,
- 1:07:03they're going to a bowl and everybody in that space was like
- 1:07:07yo, you, you tripping, You don't know what you're talking about.
- 1:07:09You just emotional and they got to a bowl game that year.
- 1:07:13So I'm not going to knock Chris prediction of eleven wins.
- 1:07:17I'm not even saying that couldn't happen.
- 1:07:19I just need man for me and my Peace of Mind.
- 1:07:22And I mean I as much as I love Tech as much as I bought into
- 1:07:28what that program means. I met my wife at Virginia Tech
- 1:07:31bro, like you got to understand something at the time I chose
- 1:07:34Tech. I was the first recruit in 94.
- 1:07:38I broke a streak because everybody was going to UVA,
- 1:07:40Carolina and Penn State or other schools.
- 1:07:42I, I was the first person in my schools.
- 1:07:45Well, I just interviewed coach Mike Smith and he talked about
- 1:07:47it like because they, there was a rift between him and the
- 1:07:50coaches and I, I broke the streak.
- 1:07:52Then then you got Myron Newsom and a lot of guys, including
- 1:07:55Mike and Marcus. So when I chose Tech, nobody was
- 1:07:59going to tech from the like that like they like I, I brought that
- 1:08:02energy alone. Antonio Banks and Lawrence Lewis
- 1:08:06So for me, when tech wins like on a Sunday, especially to start
- 1:08:11the week, if they can win that game and by 6:45 we're kneeling
- 1:08:15and we throw the ball to the ref and I see orange, maroon pom
- 1:08:19poms and people stand up and down.
- 1:08:21That gives me life because I don't I play fantasy, I do
- 1:08:25parlays. I don't have no favorite NFL
- 1:08:27team. I have no favorite NBA team.
- 1:08:28Like so we lose. And then on top of it, when you
- 1:08:31who I am, my phone, all my phones blow up, blowing up, blow
- 1:08:36up. It was like, what's going on?
- 1:08:38Fire this dude. This is and and and I have to
- 1:08:41kind of help then de escalate the fan base because I've been
- 1:08:45appointed and annoyed at the voice of reason, which I am.
- 1:08:48So yeah, man, I'm glad. Yeah, I need.
- 1:08:51Sometimes you need space to vent too, because like watch it you,
- 1:08:55you live it, you, you got a vent, but you also got to be the
- 1:08:58voice of reason. So you got to kind of come at it
- 1:09:00from both angles sometimes. You understand what I did when I
- 1:09:03went back to 757 and I was wearing my tech gear.
- 1:09:07It went from where where you at Vermont to like yo, I'm trying
- 1:09:11to go there so I understand what I did.
- 1:09:12When I came there was an influx of Hampton High guys to include
- 1:09:16Tyrod Taylor. I got I help bring in guys that
- 1:09:21are household names like legendary.
- 1:09:22They have their names engraved in plaques on walls.
- 1:09:25I'm not trying to make this show as we wrap up about me.
- 1:09:27What I'm saying is when I speak, it's not just emotion.
- 1:09:30It's not just like we need the 1st 40 fans to come out and get
- 1:09:34a free T-shirt. I don't want to do all that
- 1:09:35manufacture bullshit. I'm talking about something I
- 1:09:38believe that I believe in, like the Vandy laws hurt me.
- 1:09:42Like losing, you say it hurts, it hurts like it hurts like
- 1:09:46losing over to you and have to hit those fans behind me and
- 1:09:49talk and talk reckless, you know?
- 1:09:52So to me, you know, when Chris talks about 11 wins, I'm all for
- 1:09:56it. I just need them to be.
- 1:09:57I just need them. I need the people that make
- 1:09:59their money. The way I talk about it on your
- 1:10:02show, it needs to matter to them that way because you know what
- 1:10:06JC and those guys, they feel the same way I do.
- 1:10:11Thank you. This is this is what I'll say.
- 1:10:13This is what I'll say while we close.
- 1:10:15Them out cap. It off how I feel when you go
- 1:10:19look at the Titanic, right? The Titanic had everything.
- 1:10:23The Titanic had everything they needed.
- 1:10:26They had the band playing, they had the the best boat, they had
- 1:10:29the fancy food. All the rich people was there.
- 1:10:32Everything was lined up. It was the captain's job to take
- 1:10:36the the the boat from here to here safely.
- 1:10:40That motherfucker ran. That motherfucker ran into a big
- 1:10:43ass thing of ice and killed a whole bunch of people.
- 1:10:47Pry. If you're going to drive this
- 1:10:49boat, stay away from the micebergs, man.
- 1:10:52We trying to make it. We trying to make it to the
- 1:10:55other side safe and the other side safe is eight wins.
- 1:10:59We happy. You keep hitting icebergs,
- 1:11:01brother. Get your signature win this
- 1:11:04year. Go beat somebody.
- 1:11:06I'm tired of losing. I'm tired of seeing new King
- 1:11:08talk about Miami and and what they doing.
- 1:11:13We got to win this year. So I'm going to end it with
- 1:11:15that. Curtis, what you got for me?
