- 0:44Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast with Brian Segal.
- 0:50I'm Curtis Wilson. Tiga, we are back from a little
- 0:55Hiatus, man. How you doing little vacation?
- 0:58I'm well-rested, man. I'm well rested.
- 1:01I'm doing a week down in the mountains in North Carolina.
- 1:05Hit the lake. Hit up a bit a little detour up
- 1:09to Dollywood One Day. Road, some coasters, had a good
- 1:12time. How was your time back home,
- 1:15buddy back home was a lot of fun for a few days and that with the
- 1:18family, when we do the pool one day, my nephew is a Hibachi
- 1:26master, so had some Hibachi one night, had a greater, it was
- 1:30really a great time. You know, few days, back home
- 1:33and kids were good. Overall, they each got to stay
- 1:37up like past 11:00 consecutive nights for the oldest one.
- 1:43That's not a problem for the little one who wakes up at 5
- 1:46a.m. every morning. That's problematic.
- 1:48Oh problematic, I've got back home a couple times.
- 1:57It's been a lot of a lot of fun. Middle summer, man.
- 2:00And there we go, like, we've missed a lot.
- 2:04We gotta, we gotta, we gotta Load it up and sewed here guys.
- 2:06We got a little bit of everything.
- 2:07We got some recruiting, we're going to touch on some
- 2:10interviews that we had and then we're going to hit on some of
- 2:13the two bigger topics that have really come across the aisle
- 2:17here in the summer, which is the proposed 12 team playoff
- 2:21expansion and the name image and likeness.
- 2:24So that's into the new era of college football here.
- 2:28Yeah, a big New Era of college football.
- 2:32Because it's changing what we grew up with 25 years ago is no
- 2:37longer the case and a lot of things we want to talk about
- 2:40tonight, but since we've been gone, guys, obviously some
- 2:44big-time things have happened. Let's start first with Ramon.
- 2:49Brown committing to the Hokies, the 511, 200 pound running back
- 2:54at a Manchester here in the RV. A big-time get 4 star, a top-25
- 3:01running back. A top 24/7 player.
- 3:05Yeah, what are we seeing from Ramon?
- 3:08Rhyme either. The big thing is going to be
- 3:10great like perception-wise. Let's talk about that first
- 3:14because getting a high-caliber skill position player from the
- 3:19state of Virginia. That's something that we haven't
- 3:22really been able to pull in the last couple Cycles.
- 3:24So it's nice to see us, get back on that wagon when he committed,
- 3:29that was a big deal, that really kind of, move the needle in
- 3:32terms, Terms of, in terms of perception.
- 3:34Now that we're not saying that okay.
- 3:36Well, all of a sudden, all is well, but you start grabbing
- 3:39guys like that consistently, that starts to change the
- 3:42narrative a little bit and it shows that, you know, some of
- 3:45the new guys on the staff that have been brought into
- 3:48specifically recruit starting to pay some dividends.
- 3:52It also shows that little more investment is starting to pay
- 3:55off as well. So you know kudos to the guys
- 3:59that were able to you know, work the recruitment.
- 4:02For Ramon there and I really like what he brings to the table
- 4:06skill set was. I think he's going to be a good
- 4:09asset. Should be a guy that's going to
- 4:12see some rotational care. He's probably in his second year
- 4:18on campus. If not his first year.
- 4:20So, looking forward to see what he does for us.
- 4:23Yeah, absolutely. Shoutout to Smitty, and lectin
- 4:27Berg, who were his primary and a secondary recruiter.
- 4:30You mentioned earlier, Bonnie saw a lot of her.
- 4:32We're in this guy. I think you kind of look at this
- 4:35bill that makes sense. Also ran a 45 40 back at the
- 4:38opening back in, 2019 in back that verified at about 185
- 4:43pounds at 5 foot 10. So you kind of look at his
- 4:46height weight speed, it checks out.
- 4:50So I mean, they got him listed 2020, he's probably 195, which I
- 4:56mean that's that's about what you want for that caliber of
- 5:00player. Especially that hasn't gotten
- 5:02too. To a Collegiate weight program
- 5:05and nutrition program yet. So probably going to easily add
- 5:08another five to eight pounds to that frame once he gets going
- 5:12there and what I make the Herbert comparison, I'm more
- 5:15thinking of the size and kind of the skillset not necessarily
- 5:19what what I project him to be in terms of output.
- 5:23But I mean, Herbert Next Level this last year for.
- 5:27So it's really I mean that that's a big, that's a big barn
- 5:30for someone to have to jump over I'm not putting that on him, but
- 5:34I think just in terms of what I've seen on film and just the
- 5:38athleticism and the size, that's a probably pretty good cop.
- 5:42Absolutely. All right.
- 5:45Where the boundary Corner podcast?
- 5:46We don't everything is not sunshine and Roses we call it
- 5:49like it is. Dave, before or six days later,
- 5:54Bryson Jennings. Son of former Tech really good
- 6:00tight end back in the day. All Biggie's, Brian Jennings was
- 6:04down to us and Carolina, he picked Carolina which, you know,
- 6:11of course, it stings. He's a legacy, he's choosing to
- 6:14go elsewhere. And it's also one of those
- 6:18things to Caroline has now got like 17 Edge players.
- 6:25Well, I mean, we talked about the type of defense that they
- 6:28run. They need to, they need to load
- 6:30up on edge. But also this stings for several
- 6:36reasons it stings. Because as we'll talk about a
- 6:39little bit, we are getting thinner on the defensive line,
- 6:43especially the defensive end position getting another Edge
- 6:47guy in. Building would have been huge
- 6:48going into next season. You talk about a legacy to, I
- 6:53mean, I know I know North Carolina is on the come up
- 6:57everybody. Everybody has them on the come
- 6:58up but at the same time you got you got to lean the legacies.
- 7:04You got to figure out a way especially guys in your backyard
- 7:07ranked. Well in the state you got to
- 7:11close those out because right now, UNC is doing a fairly good
- 7:15job of putting up a gate on their state and we need to stop
- 7:20letting some of these guys get away.
- 7:22Especially guys that we have Some inroads in already.
- 7:27It's true man. And you don't know everything
- 7:29that behind the story. But again, it's the visual
- 7:33Optics. Now, for me, it's one of those
- 7:37you losing it sucks. We need Edge.
- 7:39Obviously, we're going to talk about a few things later, and
- 7:43you say, you'll and Ramon, and it's like, and you'll, and
- 7:45Pernell. And for me, Brian, it's like
- 7:50that. But if I said here and told you
- 7:54a month ago, Do her nails going to go somewhere else, for we're
- 7:58going to get Ramona Jennings or remold going to go somewhere
- 8:02else. We're going to get Fern, Ellen,
- 8:03Jennings. I feel like the combo.
- 8:06We got the two of the three. We got is the better.
- 8:11Of the two of the three, not knocking, pricing Jennings.
- 8:13He 66 235 off edge. It's like that.
- 8:16But how and springs is the best program in the state.
- 8:19Ramon Jennings has one of the highest rated players nationally
- 8:23in the state. What am I am?
- 8:26I trying to poke colored glasses.
- 8:29Remember in colored glasses here?
- 8:30Or is it? I don't think so because I think
- 8:33if you look at I think if you told me three weeks ago, if we
- 8:40were going to lay in two of those three, I'd have been
- 8:43probably okay with it. Yeah, I think kind of some of
- 8:46the Goodwill that happened from June rolling into July and once
- 8:52you get a taste of the goodness, you kind of start to expect it
- 8:55again. And, you know, we're not going
- 8:58to win all these battles, especially when we go against a
- 9:02rising team like UNC or the blue or blue blood.
- 9:06G at the same time like like I was saying before though you
- 9:10can't have things that are already in your favor and then
- 9:14you kind of squander those things I think I think if it
- 9:17wasn't the Legacy Factor if it wasn't the in-state factor I
- 9:20would have less of a problem with that Miss but it's still
- 9:24troubles me a little bit. So got a message here, our
- 9:28buddy, Robbie Mac Browns are recruiting Master be quiet
- 9:31Robbie but all is not lost. All is not lost the next day.
- 9:39One of the highest Landing recruits.
- 9:42This staff has ever. Got Gunner, Givens, the six foot
- 9:46five. I'm calling him an athlete
- 9:49270-pound Prospect right there. Next tour.
- 9:53Lord, bottom tight four-star, top 125 player in the country.
- 10:01Top-five player in the state. Brian, you've talked about it
- 10:03before we have not got two top 10 guys in the state in over a
- 10:07decade whereby months from signing day, but we've got to
- 10:12Locked In. What do you think about Gunnar
- 10:13overall? Gutters a good, grab for several
- 10:16reasons. You know, when we talk about
- 10:18removing brown in the perception, Landing a guy like
- 10:21this in your backyard and with with where he was position in
- 10:27terms of the rankings and everything that that says a lot.
- 10:32It says that we got on him early, we stayed on him.
- 10:36It says that we sold Virginia Tech in the way that we need
- 10:39needed to for this type of player.
- 10:42And what I like about Gunnar is that he does give you some
- 10:46flexibility about where you're going to where you going to put
- 10:49him because I think he has the potential to be a high-quality
- 10:53interior offensive lineman guard, maybe even a swing tackle
- 10:58if if necessary. But I prefer him at guard but he
- 11:02also has a potential and I think where he's going to end.
- 11:05End up for a lot of reasons is going to be on the defensive
- 11:08line. He's kind of that tweener.
- 11:11Three technique big defensive end I think with his size and
- 11:16his athleticism at that size I think he can kind of hang out
- 11:20there and defensive end. Be a good run stuffer but also
- 11:22have enough speed to get on there.
- 11:24Get around the edge so I see him Landing a defensive in.
- 11:28But either way it's going to it's a it's a pretty big get for
- 11:30the program and definitely kind of stamps a month that That
- 11:36really turned out pretty well overall for the Hokies
- 11:39absolutely big month on the recruiting Trail and, you know,
- 11:43currently the Hokey sit, you know, 15th in the country and
- 11:46the composite there in the ACC closing in on the 87.
- 11:51And for you guys, you know who follow the closely that 87
- 11:57numbers kind of a number, you know, if we're right near there,
- 12:00we're going to be in the top 25 where we were consistently for
- 12:03quite a few years. So, Let's hope that holds now
- 12:06again, like I said, I ain't all sunshine and Roses man but the
- 12:12transfer portal of Robert Wooten and Alec Bryant Brian.
- 12:19I'm going to I'm going to read the out front.
- 12:22I want you to read the wood and we're going to follow up so
- 12:24Bryant. This was back on the 12th, you
- 12:27know. Basically I want to thank BT for
- 12:29everything with the heavy part. I've decided to enter the
- 12:31transfer portal and move on to a different path to says.
- 12:35Nothing to do with my coaches or the program but this is the best
- 12:39thing for me to do for me in my future go.
- 12:44God bless But you read the movie quote.
- 12:48Yep. Very similarly.
- 12:49At least in the start there. I want to thank VT with the
- 12:51heavy heart. I've entered my name into the
- 12:53transfer portal, says nothing to do with the coaches and the
- 12:56program, this is where I want it to be.
- 12:59This is because of an issue that was out of their hands and mine.
- 13:02I accept responsibility and we'll move on to a different
- 13:05path. I look forward to see what my
- 13:07future holds, and we're going to be talking about the 20
- 13:11interview, text outline a little while.
- 13:14But when they got into It basically, there are two guys
- 13:17who are a transfer portal, who basically had to leave with, you
- 13:21know, University issues. Yep.
- 13:24The stories that we're hearing. It's a shame to me to think that
- 13:34if these two guys for what we're hearing, got suspended for the
- 13:39honor board in the judicial boards at Virginia Tech, might
- 13:43need to take a look at it because to me it sounds like an
- 13:46archaic practice. At some point.
- 13:51Just you know, if if everything we know to be correct is
- 13:57correct. This is kind of.
- 14:00This is a petty way to throw a year suspension on two kids.
- 14:04Regardless of whether their athletes are not, you know, the
- 14:09fact that they're athletes, you know, definitely hurts us from a
- 14:12fan perspective, hurts the team from because they're not there
- 14:15with the team. But, I mean I'd be calling
- 14:18bullshit on this. If this was just My buddy that,
- 14:20you know, drinks beer, every Saturday.
- 14:22I mean, this is, yeah, it's a messed-up scenario for something
- 14:26like that to cause that much turmoil for, you know, I think
- 14:31at this point what 19 year old kids, I mean, it's a little
- 14:35ridiculous, but and it sucks because also we're talking about
- 14:40another when I am talking about the roller coaster ride.
- 14:43I mean, this, this isn't necessarily on the staff, but
- 14:45this is still another, you know, downward trajectory They have to
- 14:50now navigate the other because it affects the depth and it
- 14:55affects perception and it affects the, you know, Texas 2vt
- 15:00movement for whatever you want to call it.
- 15:02You know, at this point it affects the perception of all of
- 15:05that. So I mean it's not a good look
- 15:09even though it has nothing nesters do with controllable
- 15:12aspects, that the staff or the athletic department could have
- 15:16really controlled here. Absolutely.
- 15:19And then later on, we're going to add a couple things about the
- 15:21defensive end position now because obviously Robert will be
- 15:24played in every game last year. Alec, Brian played, I think in
- 15:27five they were contributors and it hurts that up significantly.
- 15:32And a few weeks ago we talked with Mike McDaniel defensive
- 15:36line was looking like a place of a lot of potential because we
- 15:40had depth now it's still some potential there but the depth is
- 15:44less. So you know again the whole
- 15:47situation it's you know, they both kind of said, you know, I
- 15:53accept the responsibility and everything but it's just what
- 15:58we're reading If This Were to go back in A to say this, if we
- 16:04were in college and that happened to me, oh I'd raise
- 16:09holy hell, let's just leave it at that.
- 16:12Hi everyone. Okay, so I'm going to want to
- 16:16let's do a scenario little role play here.
- 16:20It's announced ACC media de Notre Dame and Virginia Tech
- 16:25will be on acc Network. What's your first thought when
- 16:28you heard that? A Comcast there, they're talking
- 16:33to you that was him. I didn't think that way I was
- 16:38like what? And then 20 minutes later I'm
- 16:45reading, do this deal gets to go RI up for negotiation.
- 16:49Starting in August to end in September.
- 16:53They are leveraging because they put us basically on a SEC
- 16:57network and they put a Clemson against BC game.
- 17:01Which species being projected higher this year.
- 17:02They're so for me and Brian, we have the SEC network, we're not
- 17:09affected, but a lot of people in the state of Virginia are on
- 17:14Comcast. So, you know, like, we're pretty
- 17:19much. I'd say what 2/3 of the
- 17:21Mid-Atlantic is on Comcast, and some way shape, or form.
- 17:24So, I mean, right in the prime media coverage foot print of the
- 17:31ACC is, you know, the probably what forty percent of the
- 17:36households in that area at least 40% of the people that still are
- 17:40on cable, at least. Oh, yeah, are impacted by this.
- 17:43So, definitely, I mean my cousin that I saw them in South
- 17:47Carolina he is on Comcast, don't Charleston so it's clearly
- 17:50affecting, you know, the entire ACC footprint and then you know
- 17:56they get to leverage the Notre Dame game with us and basically
- 17:59say you don't get that that you don't get those.
- 18:01You don't get that many people. So you're taking advantage of a
- 18:07multiple fan bases and I know some people are saying, well,
- 18:10it's so easy just to click on the somebody's thing and do it
- 18:12and put the issue is It's a lot easier just to click on your TV
- 18:19and go to the spot instead of calling Mom and say Mom I need
- 18:23your password, don't get the game but I think that guarantees
- 18:29that is going to be a night game.
- 18:31Where if it was on ABC, I think that weekend I saw like I think
- 18:36it's like am Alabama. Maybe it's like three folds,
- 18:40right? It's three or four big games
- 18:42that we can wear. Potentially we wouldn't get the
- 18:45ABC Primetime. Slot.
- 18:47We get more of a 3:30 but this locks into a prime-time game.
- 18:51Yep. All right, so first of all, as
- 18:56we get into the interview, with Jay, Ham on Saturday, Shout Out.
- 19:00Billy Pat Grayson, you guys did an unbelievable job with Coach
- 19:06coach ham, is just we've said it before.
- 19:09He is an absolutely amazing interview, the energy.
- 19:14He gives off the way he, you know, Orchestrates, the stories
- 19:18are beautiful and there was a lot of good stuff in there, but
- 19:21me and Brian are focused on the season, coming up.
- 19:25We are, we are, we could talk a little bit about, you know, how,
- 19:29you know, hand was about to go into the insurance business and,
- 19:34but before Fuente send up a text message, we could go into that
- 19:38stuff and we can go into the, you know, how pretty much he was
- 19:41chomping at the bit to get back to Virginia.
- 19:43Tech you're in that time at VMI. Particular, but we're going to
- 19:49focus more on the, I guess the football aspects.
- 19:53Some of that was kind of in the back half of the interview.
- 19:55I don't know how far everyone got into it, but it's, it was a
- 19:59great. What, almost two hours total
- 20:01podcast, so definitely check that out.
- 20:04If you haven't already, we're going to run through some of the
- 20:06back. Half highlights here.
- 20:09Well Curtis, I'll let you, I'll let, I'll let you lead off here
- 20:11with with some of the things you saw.
- 20:13Well, the first time and it caught my eye was The first
- 20:17position. See, discussed was the
- 20:18linebacker room. Basically, the first thing, you
- 20:21said Dax Tisdale absolute Concepts there with these guys
- 20:26play. A lot of other aspects of the
- 20:29game. They play a lot of specialty and
- 20:31they're both valuable there. They get a ton of reps.
- 20:34So he started then discussing about the rotation of the
- 20:37linebackers and maybe a surprise to some maybe not so much to me
- 20:43because we don't have to have a camp.
- 20:45He had Dean Ferguson's knee. I'm came up and it was a shock
- 20:48to you bra mean not a big shock. I mean, he had been kind of
- 20:52floating around from what we were hearing anyway, you know,
- 20:55kind of hanging in there and make a little bit of noise.
- 20:58So it was nice to see that. That's catching the coaches
- 21:01attention there and that, you know, potentially, we could see
- 21:04him in the rotation come the fall.
- 21:06Because honestly, I mean, I like our Frontline guys, but I'd like
- 21:12to see some other guys step up here, because I'm a little
- 21:15concerned behind kind The guys that that we've seen play.
- 21:20So it's nice to hear some of these other guys are coming
- 21:22along as well. Yep, you know, you feel like you
- 21:26trust that actually can trust his down but again you want to
- 21:28see death and when you start to mention in the names that makes
- 21:31you feel good and you mentioned the maturity of his day off his
- 21:36tail. So that was that's big.
- 21:38I know I know we had I think he had mentioned that previously.
- 21:41Yeah I can't remember what where it was whether it was on
- 21:45something that the Hokey sports did or whether it's something
- 21:48like that, but he mentioned that and that fatherhood is really,
- 21:53really kind of worked on Tisdale and seems like he's a lot more
- 21:55mature and ready to kind of step up and take his game more
- 21:59seriously and take it to the next level.
- 22:00So I'm glad to hear that because I mean ability was never the
- 22:04problem with his daily was just consistency.
- 22:06So, if he can get the consistency lined up, man, he's
- 22:09going to be a pretty good player consistency in weight.
- 22:12Yeah, it's one of those things too.
- 22:14Because when you hear them talking about meeting, Well if
- 22:17Tisdale's only 210 215 heat, we are going to have to spell them.
- 22:21Some you're going to have to pick and choose how much he
- 22:24plays, because by all means you're playing a team that can
- 22:27really run the ball as you get later into the game.
- 22:29Brian you can't have him out there every possession or
- 22:33they're just essentially, just going to wear him out and he's
- 22:35just going to completely. They just move out of the way.
- 22:38So that was interesting that he mentioned that room first.
- 22:43Now the next two positions I wasn't shot.
- 22:45He talked about safety T and quarterback competition and and
- 22:51he started rolling off the names of safeties.
- 22:53I mean, Devon Taylor teide Lee Jr.
- 22:56Walker Devon Hunter and Kiante Jenkins.
- 23:00Safety is a strength. Now they real strength with teh
- 23:05coming in to shore up and you getting David Hunter back.
- 23:09I mean that's that's two big ones.
- 23:11Right out the gate. Counted Jenkins got some run
- 23:15last year. And I'm going to I'm going to
- 23:18take a brief moment here and this isn't necessarily football
- 23:21but it definitely speaks to how coach am does his due diligence
- 23:25in not only recruiting, but just trying to relate to the players
- 23:30him talking about, you know, when he went to when he was
- 23:33looking at Kyoto Jenkins in high school body language.
- 23:36He didn't like initially kept his helmet on the sidelines.
- 23:40Kept his head down between series and all this stuff, and
- 23:43he actually talked to him, he was like, okay, well, he keeps
- 23:46his head. But honestly he's ready to go.
- 23:48While he helps him stay in in the mindset of the game when
- 23:52he's got his head down with the sidelines between series, he's
- 23:55running through scenarios. What he did?
- 23:57Well what he did bad on the previous series.
- 23:59What he could do to do better next time out there somebody
- 24:02that was that was some good insight and also speaks to you
- 24:05can't necessarily take your initial view on a situation and
- 24:10say okay well that that's what it is.
- 24:13He's willing to dive deeper and get an understanding of Of the
- 24:16players. And I think that's big and that
- 24:19that helps them relate to him because he knows that he's not
- 24:24going to just, you know, close the book on them just because we
- 24:30won Bad series one bad situation.
- 24:33So I think that's big. That was, that was a really good
- 24:37moment for me in the, in the interview there.
- 24:41Yeah, and you know Gionta last year came in got a ton of
- 24:45valuable experience and then you how ham thinks about that him
- 24:51once you in the corner back room again, competition, I look at
- 24:54the depth chart here and you know, the All-American freshman
- 24:57going strong. He complimented talking about
- 25:00Jermaine Waller, had a offseason to get fully healthy.
- 25:05Big dip, remember, 19. It was kind of a discussion,
- 25:09who's better? Waller or Caleb and obviously
- 25:13Caleb's, the bigger physical frequent, you feel like wall
- 25:15with physical, maybe a little more football Savvy because
- 25:18that's kind of been his position.
- 25:19His whole career. You know, talked about Brian
- 25:22Murray talked about, you know, Armani Chapman, talked about
- 25:28Nike Hawkins which is very interesting to hear because that
- 25:32name one mentioned last year. So again we talked about it, you
- 25:37know, lower sex six weeks ago. Corner.
- 25:40You feel good because a lot of guys have rough sand You know, I
- 25:46think Jermaine Waller is such a key not being leader because
- 25:51with Divine Diablo gone. Waller kind of gets to step into
- 25:57that role as the leader of DB you.
- 25:59Well, I will say this, too. And I mean last year, just
- 26:02because of injuries, opt-outs covid, the devil Hunter
- 26:09situation. The secondary was probably
- 26:13overall a weak area of defense and I feel like going into this
- 26:18season even with losing the caliber player of a Divine
- 26:22Diablo we're in a much better situation in the secondary to
- 26:28the point where it's probably our strongest unit on the
- 26:32defense going into the season. Maybe not as top end as you know
- 26:40with with a Mario Our know, probably a defensive end
- 26:43probably being the, the highest ceiling player.
- 26:46Yeah. But I think Waller could
- 26:48potentially re-establish himself as that dominant player on
- 26:52defense. We haven't even talked about
- 26:54Shamari Connor. You know just said, I mean, this
- 27:01is this is a stack unit but I'd only a more veteran unit than
- 27:06last year, but also I think top end they have more Talent this
- 27:11Here. Yeah, absolutely.
- 27:14Now the next one he addressed. It was interesting how he
- 27:18addressed this because this was obviously the interview after
- 27:23looting and Brian had left. So we're sitting here and he
- 27:27starts talking about how you know we do some things.
- 27:32Essentially saying to me off edge in our defense that we
- 27:37can't account for it. Can we do it every Play?
- 27:39No, but how he talked? About that.
- 27:42You can see his mind's already working on.
- 27:45I might be a little thinner defensive end than I was before.
- 27:49I've got to start making adjustment.
- 27:50He mentioned. He was starting to think about
- 27:52that while he was on vacation. And you know when you hear you
- 27:58know somebody say that his head's in the game it's probably
- 28:04never out of the game and when he's talking about, you know, we
- 28:09get to do what we still do, where we don't have to
- 28:11completely change everything because we lost a couple pieces
- 28:14on the beach. Yeah, I think you know the
- 28:21defensive adjustments going to be interesting just because you
- 28:24know as we've been talking about I think front line were not so
- 28:27bad. It's the depth you know we got
- 28:30probably about three or four guys we feel like we can count
- 28:33on. We like to rotate six.
- 28:37Guys at that position. Probably I don't know if we feel
- 28:41as good about that especially now that Wooten and Bryant have
- 28:45have entered the portal. Well, I think we'd was going to
- 28:48see some significant steps this year.
- 28:52He played pretty much every game last year, I think it was gonna
- 28:54pretty much be kind of the fourth or fifth guy in that
- 28:59rotation this year. So he would have seen a lot more
- 29:01snaps this year, so that's going to hurt.
- 29:04It's going to be hard to replace that, but, you know, I think
- 29:07he's talks about different things that he could do
- 29:10schematically to take some of that off.
- 29:12One of the things he was talking about is kind of giving.
- 29:16Given looks priest map and having something different that
- 29:19he's going to show to him post. Snap, keep the offense kind of
- 29:23on their heels and not knowing what to expect.
- 29:24But the other thing he talked about and I think was you know
- 29:29maybe over some some folks had some folks not so much but kind
- 29:32of binary defense have checks. They're essentially depending on
- 29:36the look of the offense there's going to be you either do this
- 29:40or do that. So not only simplifying you but
- 29:43also still giving some flexibility there.
- 29:44Depending on the look to kind of Of bring something different to
- 29:48the, to the offense, different looks each time.
- 29:50So they see something different. So I think that was something
- 29:53that he kind of talked about. That was, I think going to pay
- 29:56some dividends here in the fall, because I think the big thing
- 30:00last year was that, I think there was too much new and not
- 30:05enough not enough time to really absorb it and absorb it in the
- 30:10way that not only the be, the how he talked about the coaching
- 30:14staff, really not being 100% on. The same page because right in
- 30:17the middle of installing the defense from a coaching
- 30:20perspective, all of a sudden you're doing that shit remotely.
- 30:23Yeah. And in person yet that's huge.
- 30:27That's huge. You remember something in this
- 30:30is in a way similar to that he was discussing a lot of people
- 30:34said, why not, just go to Bud stuff and he made the point and
- 30:38he was like, You know I'm here, bud stuff.
- 30:42Maybe didn't know bud stuff. Tracy claeys in the bud stuff,
- 30:47although some people still believe Tracy, please was on an
- 30:49island all last year. Maybe maybe not Kim did for me,
- 30:52was in the locker room for the UVA game building.
- 30:57No blood stuff. And is he made the point Darryl,
- 31:01Clayton Bud system need to say, you know, poke the 13 years
- 31:06before but he never coasted and never had to do it in a
- 31:10different way. So, when he said that, Something
- 31:16I'm going to close with your later when he said that kind of
- 31:19made more sense. Something else he said was and
- 31:23it really called My Arrows, you talked about the layering levels
- 31:25of the defense and he gave, but his props saying Bud, should be
- 31:30the first assistant coach in the Hall of Fame.
- 31:33Best defensive coordinator of all time.
- 31:35The system was unbelievable. But he made the point and Brian
- 31:39me and you have been watching for a long time and it's true.
- 31:43Buzz defense was very high-risk high-reward.
- 31:46Yep. How many times did we give up?
- 31:49Huge, chunk plays whether in the passing game, or in the running
- 31:53game, because we were either plans, cover, zero g, and the
- 31:58line somebody that misses a gap, or they missed the press, the
- 32:02one that always gets me, I talked about a 30 minutes before
- 32:05we jumped on the night. Y'all ECU 2014, we tie the game.
- 32:11It all we got to do is it's like a minimum 12 left.
- 32:14I think. If somebody like that game, let
- 32:17me know it was it wasn't much time left in.
- 32:19The only thing I said is like, the only thing we can't do, we
- 32:22can't give up a huge plate. We give up a huge play.
- 32:24They're going to win the game. We literally were in a cover.
- 32:28One. Clean press we give up an
- 32:32over-the-top, they win. Well they're very close game.
- 32:36Big play. Yeah.
- 32:39Hey and so would you say in that picture?
- 32:42I think he's we're still going to see some, are we going to see
- 32:44some covers? Rose and he's going to attack.
- 32:46Yeah, we will see some cover ones, but I think Ron pointed
- 32:50you made last year and this year is We're going to see what type
- 32:54of coverage. I mean I think you're going to
- 32:58see a lot more Zone and you're going to see a lot more zones
- 33:00just because that's the way. Countering buds defense was to
- 33:06attack the defense at different levels.
- 33:10So we were fairly good at containing, the run-in.
- 33:16We at least had been in place to take away the Deep stuff as long
- 33:21as we didn't get beat, but what you didn't have is if you know,
- 33:27you got all those guys running deep with the receivers and now
- 33:29you've got a quarterback that breaks contain and there's just
- 33:32a big space of know. Nothing for about 15 or 20
- 33:36yards. What's the Marilyn game?
- 33:39I think the same freaking slow, quarterback.
- 33:42We had no one there to get thing.
- 33:44Like, 89 yards that game. Yeah, we-we're big house
- 33:48watching that game. I think we were screaming.
- 33:52We were upset. But so you kind of see the
- 33:57vision that we're going to have levels in to me what he is.
- 34:01He's kind of already telling people.
- 34:06Buddy, Robbie he wanted to keep with that.
- 34:08Yes, I agree and it wasn't from Jake drinking the beam.
- 34:14It was a need but what he's saying is the modern era of
- 34:18college football is a lot more underneath stuff.
- 34:23You seen you know, Airaid Concepts in the last 15 years or
- 34:27everybody system are a concept RPO.
- 34:30I mean those things are designed to Really attack the three
- 34:35levels of painted defense on a given play.
- 34:37And I think that's the thing that we're not talking about is
- 34:40that you know it's not just okay well you know you're you're
- 34:45stabbing short here you're stabbing deep here I meet a
- 34:48given playing the RPO system can really kind of attack those
- 34:51different levels depending on what the read the quarterback
- 34:54gets and what he decides to do with football.
- 34:56Yeah and as hand said that or po stuff was essentially done to
- 35:03counter Of the Bud Foster defense.
- 35:05And I agree with that. All right.
- 35:06Well, let's kick it off of J. Hamm on the coach few, with the
- 35:10TSL interview. Great job by Will Stewart, and
- 35:13by Chris Coleman there and food just seems super comfortable
- 35:16this interview and let's start first.
- 35:20And this is how, you know, what? He's come from very early in
- 35:22their they're talking about recruiting Virginian house
- 35:24getting better and, you know, Landing places and the staff and
- 35:28the focus. He gave a shout to Smitty like
- 35:30them Berg and then he said, Just because you're from Virginia,
- 35:35doesn't mean you can recruit here.
- 35:37We've seen that not work out like Jesus Christ shots fired.
- 35:42Yeah, I wasn't sure who that was so tweeting, but he was
- 35:46subtweeting somebody we're not We're not gonna throw names out
- 35:50there. I have a feeling y'all, but you
- 35:55see that? And it's one of those things
- 35:57that's kind of true. Again, the winds we've had this
- 36:00year in the state had been really big and Again, the
- 36:04Comfort level who just come out and say that you knew was going
- 36:07to be a good interview from right there very early on in the
- 36:10process. Yeah, well I mean, what's the
- 36:12Comfort level is kind of drop there?
- 36:13And I mean, we saw the juxtaposition with media day and
- 36:17we know that that's a different animal.
- 36:20And think we'll even talked about.
- 36:24He always seems more comfortable in the breakouts after then the
- 36:27actual fish bowl. So yeah, just hold you don't
- 36:32know what you're getting. So it makes a lot.
- 36:34A lot of sense, you know, in the next piece that he said, Ron
- 36:37that kind of we talk about is he is reviewing or he views
- 36:42recruiting. Now is a two-fold approach high
- 36:45school and the portal free agency.
- 36:48And we've talked about it before and he talked about how they're
- 36:53continuing to build the recruiting staff and kind of
- 36:58made it seem to me in a way that if he's here, you're going to
- 37:03essentially You guys in war brand.
- 37:05These are our high school, this is the portal.
- 37:10Yeah, and I have a feeling through the portal staff, will
- 37:13probably be in charge of talking to guys on the roster.
- 37:16That's the way it goes. But I like that concept.
- 37:21Yeah. And I liked our approach a
- 37:23little bit more this off season than last only because While,
- 37:30you know, going out for some big fish to feel fill the holes that
- 37:33you have on your roster like Landing a read or Landing
- 37:37Blackshear in a Herbert. I prefer if we're going into the
- 37:41portal to kind of be more of a depth move with potential to be
- 37:47a starter. Not, we're counting on you to be
- 37:50the guy or we're up shits Creek. So, if we're going to use the
- 37:56portal and use it, well, I think that's the way we need to keep
- 37:59continue to continue to work because we can't book on finding
- 38:06starter level and potentially Star level talent in the portal
- 38:10every year. Yeah to buoy our team.
- 38:13So you know getting getting at a daily you know getting a bob
- 38:19Shake. I know he was a Juco but when
- 38:23Williams yeah this kind of that more of a car.
- 38:28Or Johnny, I mean, I think that's the type of players you
- 38:32need to be bringing in. Not, we're bringing in her red
- 38:36and black sheer and if one of those two don't bust, we're in
- 38:40big trouble. So I like this approach better
- 38:44and it also means that you have to focus on doing the recruiting
- 38:48the high school, recruiting the right way.
- 38:50And so I think we're seeing some of the benefits of that come
- 38:53through as well. Yeah I mean to me I think you
- 38:55have to look the portal. I want to say say similar to how
- 39:00the more well ran in FL organizations are the guys you
- 39:06recruit are the guys you want to be on the bed, you want to be
- 39:10your stars. But you know, there's going to
- 39:13be guys who just are buried on the depth chart and eventually
- 39:17say, I just need to get on the field.
- 39:20I'm probably good enough to play at other institutions and I've
- 39:23got to go there because I need to show.
- 39:24Take in the NFL is you look to go duck.
- 39:29Still out there. Let's jump over this, I think
- 39:38after everything that happened, not shocking, you know, Wulfric.
- 39:43Renee, the, you know, tight end recruit last year from France is
- 39:48switched over. Officially it's actually updated
- 39:51on the Hokey website today, which is shocking because
- 39:55apparently they're timely updates, only updates.
- 39:58There's I love to see move positions that still have not
- 40:02been so I don't think this is a shock, but a couple things that
- 40:07coach food talked about was A the athleticism of Wilfred but
- 40:12the other was the story of literally what 16 he comes from
- 40:17France, over. He doesn't speak a lick of
- 40:22English. Learns, English goes to a
- 40:24Preparatory Academy and Connecticut.
- 40:27And you know, any said kind of the way I got it wasn't like if
- 40:34this kid had been an american-born kid his
- 40:36recruitment would have been significantly higher.
- 40:39Yeah all those not red flags but what do you call them?
- 40:43Ron I mean barriers. I think they are probably the
- 40:50best way to say it. Yeah.
- 40:51That there were barriers to his Recruitment and you know we're
- 40:57talking about a player here that is versatile.
- 40:59So I mean you like to see that you like to see versatile
- 41:02players this roster in general, has been moving to more
- 41:05versatile players. We see how we're recruiting,
- 41:09we're seeing it how we're deploying, I've still
- 41:13offensively still wanting to See more of that.
- 41:17But that's I digress him switching over to defensive end,
- 41:22his big. Not only because of the holes
- 41:24that we have created with some transfers and things like that.
- 41:29But also we get to see this guy's athleticism because we do
- 41:33have some other tight end depth that he's not he probably wasn't
- 41:37going to see significant snaps this year, he can help us on
- 41:40defensive end. He said he wasn't necessarily
- 41:42done at tight end but the need position going into 2021 is
- 41:47going to be defensive end. So I'm looking forward to see
- 41:49what he's able to do. Since he does have some
- 41:52experience there. This isn't Ana.
- 41:54Mari bar. No situation where he's picking
- 41:56the position up from from ground zero.
- 41:59So hopefully he jumps into fall camp and finds a good roll.
- 42:04Oh yeah, definitely an experience there and High School
- 42:07in his last season there while playing been both ways, forty
- 42:11seven, tackles 15 and a half sacks, 11 tackles for loss three
- 42:15forced fumbles and he blocked the punt.
- 42:18And he also the big piece of lot of people were, you know, a lot
- 42:22of people mentioned how excited they were about him.
- 42:26Was he wrestled? And usually when you hear a
- 42:29wrestler, you think more defense and offense so I think it's a
- 42:33great chance for him. Maybe the potential, you know
- 42:39what the guy sees working with on that line, the experience
- 42:41with pricing tier Only maybe to take steps like Barna did last
- 42:45year under tap and chairlift so we don't know.
- 42:49We can only hope. All right.
- 42:52Also, did you notice when he talked about that the laughs
- 42:54came out? Yeah.
- 42:59Anytime he simply life, you know, he's comfortable as well.
- 43:02All right, I got the roster up here.
- 43:05Braun. All right.
- 43:06Pull it up. Tell me we got, okay.
- 43:08He mentioned, first of all, there's 37,000 running.
- 43:12Acts on our team, there's three running backs who have a
- 43:15potential freshman, running back to have potential to play this
- 43:18year and I'm going through here a, there's so many of them.
- 43:23Who do you think he's talking about?
- 43:25Give me, give me one name that you would say that guy could
- 43:28probably play this year. Oh man, Bronson Alcott.
- 43:34Thomas I'd say Kenji has the best chance to get into the
- 43:38rotation and a lot of that's going to depend on somebody else
- 43:42for probably going to talk about and that's going to be key.
- 43:45Sean King. When she if Keshawn King he said
- 43:51he's still working on his consistency.
- 43:53If Keshawn King is consistent the more likely those freshmen
- 43:57are going to see less time because he mentioned Jalen, he
- 44:02mentioned Rahim Blackshear but I think ringing blacks years going
- 44:06to be working as much in the slot if as he is in the
- 44:09backfield. So this is going to do in terms
- 44:11of being the number two guy. The guy that's getting the spell
- 44:14carries. The guy that's getting Anal
- 44:17carries its down to Keyshawn King, depending on where we are
- 44:21on the field. Marco Lee, probably in short
- 44:24yardage situations and then one or two of those freshman's that
- 44:28step up. I'm thinking it will be Kenji.
- 44:31Yeah, he mentioned Marco. He's ready play this year.
- 44:33He's had last year. It was a combination of learning
- 44:36The Playbook, plus being in physical shape.
- 44:40The key thing you mentioned it. He, I think he said this every
- 44:42year about king or least last year's to consistency key
- 44:45Chongqing, you know, We've seen him make some eye-opening plays
- 44:51and then just kind of go away Ron.
- 44:57I swear to God if they run Rahim Blackshear, like they did last
- 45:01year, you're going to go to Blacksburg.
- 45:04We're going to stand it. Marry a man with big signs and
- 45:08you're going to write on their black share is not a primary
- 45:11running back. Stop it.
- 45:15I mean, if you're calling plays that consistently get him.
- 45:17I'm outside the tackles or the ball in the passing game in
- 45:21space, I have no problem with it.
- 45:23If you're telling me you're gonna run inside Zone with them,
- 45:26you know, five six times in a row, I'm gonna scratch my head
- 45:30and look at you, like, you got the whole in your own head?
- 45:32Yeah, I mean, like, it's just it doesn't, it doesn't make sense.
- 45:37I like Ricky Blackshear but he does not have the between the
- 45:41tackles Vision that especially Herbert had last year, but I
- 45:45think in particular, That you're looking for in terms of
- 45:49consistency, but he does have really good Vision in space.
- 45:55So you want to get him outside the tackles, you want to get him
- 45:58the ball in space. You want to throw the ball to
- 46:00him from the slot. You don't necessarily just want
- 46:05to line him up and run, Dives and insides up.
- 46:08Yeah, we have plenty of running backs.
- 46:10We need, although somehow David. He'll put us one-eyed, receiver
- 46:14tight end, combo. I'm still trying to figure that
- 46:16out but how my wide receivers he mentioned that the Wayne Loft
- 46:23and Jalen Jonas studs, Coach Fuente, if they are studs then I
- 46:30should see them on the field significantly this year.
- 46:32If they are not on the field, choose your words better or
- 46:36figure out what's going on the offensive side of the ball while
- 46:39they're not there. Because now after hearing
- 46:42Braxton earlier today in an interview Braxton this offseason
- 46:46have been working a lot with Trey pay Danes Mitchell.
- 46:53Heme and Jayden and Caleb. That's a good core that, but if
- 46:59you're saying those two guys are studs, also come back Jay.
- 47:03A second downright was killing us in scout team last year.
- 47:10Braun, you being you talked about it and you were like
- 47:13killing you. Also.
- 47:14Why? Well I said, I said, you know,
- 47:18whether he was killing or not. I mean we had trouble.
- 47:20Getting changa Hodge the ball for whatever reason last year,
- 47:24how we going to get daylan, right?
- 47:26The ball as well. So that was my frustration.
- 47:29I don't think we necessarily lack Talent on that side of the
- 47:33ball. I think we need to be better at
- 47:35getting separation and I think we need to be better about
- 47:39getting the ball to our players. That can make plays because we
- 47:44got some athletes out there especially, you know, some of
- 47:47the guys we got Jaden, pay you coming back.
- 47:49I'm looking really forward to seeing what he can do in this
- 47:53offense, because I mean, that speed is an X Factor in that
- 47:56athleticism. Even if he's still not quite the
- 48:00crisp route, Runner that we want him to be, we need someone that
- 48:04can just take the top off stretch, the defense gets
- 48:07separation from athletic, cornerbacks And I think he can
- 48:11be that guy for us. So, I'm looking forward to what
- 48:15to see what they can do. But I'm not, I'm not David Hale
- 48:18here and thinking that we are Crushing the wide receiver game
- 48:24either. I think we have a a solid front
- 48:28front. Few skill guys.
- 48:29And then a lot of guys that have talent but are unproven.
- 48:33Yeah absolutely. He also addressed the offensive
- 48:37line, you know he mentioned kind of mentioned Tyrell, Smith is
- 48:41going to get some probably get the first run at right, tackle
- 48:44with Silas being a pretty good position for Right Guard.
- 48:48But then as he's talking, he let something slip.
- 48:51Ron, you had some slip, he said, well, you know, broccoli, Garden
- 48:55tackle and grime, probably went Guard and tackle a.
- 49:04Yeah I mean and obviously we don't want to be in a situation
- 49:08where we need to play Brock and Tackle but if Brock is the best
- 49:12tackle, we have you play Brockett tackle, that's my
- 49:16opinion. I want my best.
- 49:18Five linemen on the field. Whatever my best five
- 49:23combination is, I want them on the field and if that happens to
- 49:27be Brock Hoffman at right tackle, Well, so be it obviously
- 49:31that's not ideal. Nobody wants to be in that
- 49:34scenario. So I think a lot of this is
- 49:37going to depend on what we get, how quickly Bob.
- 49:40She could pick up the tackle position, knowing what we have
- 49:44in Parker Clements once. Those things start to flesh out
- 49:49a little bit then I think we will know if that he's even an
- 49:53option something that's on the table but until then and I know
- 49:57we talked about Tyrell coming back.
- 49:59As well. So once we kind of see how those
- 50:03three ShakeOut I guess, that's when Brock would probably come
- 50:06in the in the picture there but You know, as I said, I want my
- 50:12best best five combination out there, so if that ends up being
- 50:15brachot tackle. So be it.
- 50:17I'm really hoping about three weeks from now, he announces the
- 50:21starters, on the line, You know, I really hope that's done
- 50:26because I think for us, I want to vision of foods out there,
- 50:30and it's a way to nitpick. Yes, from the talk about, but
- 50:34you get an idea because we're him when I'm saying that, and
- 50:39then I'm kind of inferring that Silas kind of had Right Guard
- 50:43lockdown. It makes you feel a little
- 50:45better because then you see the death build a little bit, will
- 50:47Johnny, I'll be back up Center. Rocking kick to tackle org or
- 50:52whatever way we need in more depth, which is our biggest
- 50:55concern on the line. Not necessarily the first
- 50:57starting five for starting five. We feel good about.
- 51:00All right, bro. So if you feel good about Brock
- 51:03and you feel good about Silas, then that gives you more of a
- 51:07swing. Yes, you do.
- 51:09Because at least then you feel better about, okay, well, if we
- 51:13need to move rock out, we've got a solid core here and then you
- 51:17still got a couple guys behind them that you would Least feel
- 51:20somewhat okay about in especially Kate more sounds like
- 51:26he had a pretty good pretty good spring as well.
- 51:29So Absolutely, you're the end of the interview with welcome Chris
- 51:35talked about favorite movies and Brian.
- 51:37I know this one super close to your heart.
- 51:40Talked about favorite movie Shawshank Redemption that is you
- 51:47as long as I'm on you that's been here jamming and I'll
- 51:50shake, you can never go wrong with with Shawshank.
- 51:55I mean, you got your, Stephen King writing, the short story
- 52:00Rita, In the Shawshank Redemption.
- 52:02Shout out Stephen King. And then, I mean, The movie that
- 52:09started Morgan Freeman as the narrator.
- 52:12Yes. And he was unbelievable in it.
- 52:15He and Tim Robbins. Just the story in general.
- 52:18It's one of those that, if it's on, you can.
- 52:21If you have probably seen it more than 10 times, you've
- 52:24probably seen in more than 50. Is that a lie?
- 52:29I mean, there was a time where I was like watching it like once a
- 52:31month. All right, so he only closer to
- 52:34100 bucks. Well, it's again.
- 52:37Now the other one. Talked about Pulp Fiction.
- 52:40I mean, Just that entire movie is great.
- 52:46I mean there's just so many moments there.
- 52:48So many lines. I mean he was Tarantino just
- 52:54pulling his dick out and saying we're doing this.
- 52:56And I mean, it was a it was a, it was a fun ride and it seems
- 53:01like food really likes movies made in 1994.
- 53:04He was only missing the Forest Gump for the trifecta of the
- 53:071995, Oscar Oscar, run their of like the big From that years.
- 53:14So He's very true. Actually.
- 53:18I go back and you think 1994. I mean, obviously, those movies
- 53:23were unbelievable. I mean, you know, by the way,
- 53:30another, this is just, this goes back to us being kids with Dumb
- 53:33and Dumber was 94 to. I, like the original three-year,
- 53:38not 94, is a great year really great year for.
- 53:42I don't even think I'd say, Question on it man I want to
- 53:47close this out. With one thing these interviews
- 53:50were great. These interviews are great.
- 53:54These interviews were six months too late.
- 53:58And we we focused a lot on. What's Happening Now?
- 54:02J, Hamm gave some of the back story of how he got to Virginia
- 54:05Tech, who gave some little peek behind the curtain.
- 54:11Look behind the curtain. What was going on?
- 54:14Especially the covid-19 were talking about, we had nobody at
- 54:18Camp. Yep we're contact.
- 54:20Traced if this had been said six months ago after with keeps him
- 54:26after they talk I think a lot of us would sit here and say, hey
- 54:31wait a minute for eight weeks of Camp.
- 54:33You like had no bodies, you couldn't essentially install
- 54:36what you wanted to install on your side of the ball, and then
- 54:41obviously some of the stuff taking place during the season.
- 54:45The Christina Garnett has said, it numerous time we are
- 54:48bringing, so piss-poor, public relations.
- 54:52This should, this should become, this should become a staple in
- 55:00February. For them, a staple sit down P.
- 55:05SL, sit down with whoever, you're comfortable with and
- 55:08shoot, the breeze for 90 minutes.
- 55:11Well, I think the, I think the problem is that, you know, let's
- 55:14go back. To access in general.
- 55:17True. It's true, you're not
- 55:19communicating with us. You don't get the benefit of the
- 55:22doubt. . And I think that that's part of
- 55:27the problem and sometimes it's too little too late.
- 55:32If you get out in front of things this is I mean this is PR
- 55:35shit that Christina was talking about.
- 55:37This is if you get out in front of things or you talk about
- 55:42things with people. You spread more Goodwill.
- 55:46People are more willing to give you the benefit of the doubt or
- 55:49give you a little bit of leash, but devoid of that people make
- 55:55up their own stories, people make up their own minds, and
- 56:00there's nothing to prove them wrong.
- 56:01There's no, there's no other counter information out there.
- 56:05So you're letting someone else, write the narrative, whether
- 56:07that's true or not. You're forfeiting your your
- 56:12version of the story. It's true, man.
- 56:16And that's one thing that they have got to understand.
- 56:19They've got to have people in there telling them get in front
- 56:22of it, pulp about it because we would have probably had a lot of
- 56:28empathy especially the training camp shit, man, because that's
- 56:33insane to think we can. You have little to nobody there.
- 56:37All right guys, before we get into name image and likeness and
- 56:42the playoff taught, we're going to take it.
- 56:45Quick pause for a message from our digital partners.
- 57:10Alright guys, so next up here, we are going to be looking at
- 57:17naming image and likeness. It is big.
- 57:20It is here, it ain't no going back.
- 57:22They ain't much governance to it right now.
- 57:25But Brian, I'm just being real. You are how too late is this?
- 57:31When should this shit had released artist 2021?
- 57:35What's your opponent? You started?
- 57:37The NCAA should have beginnig of Gun talking about this and
- 57:43starting to write the rules of this a decade ago there, at
- 57:47least five years, late, implementing it and they drag
- 57:52their feet, they waited for the state.
- 57:54So they wanted the conference's to step up on their own instead
- 57:59of doing it themselves as they should, there needs to be a
- 58:02unified system. You can't let each conference
- 58:05write their own bylaws. When you are under a governing
- 58:09body already. D, it's stupid.
- 58:12Number two. So they wait, they wait, they
- 58:18drag their feet state starts. Passing shit, people start,
- 58:21suing them. People start, suing the states.
- 58:25He gets all the way to Congressional hearings and they
- 58:28get completely raked over the dam.
- 58:30Coals by democrats Republicans and everyone in between.
- 58:35It's like one of the few damn things that both sides have
- 58:38agreed on in the past five years was that the NCAA completely
- 58:44stepped in shit on this? So now that they've been called
- 58:50out by that and now that other states are putting things in
- 58:53place and those are going live effective July 1st.
- 58:57The NCAA says, alright, any state that has rules?
- 59:00You follow those any ones that don't hear some very fucking
- 59:05loose guidelines to go by until we decide what this actually
- 59:09should look like. Yeah, to me you say 10 years ago
- 59:12and they should have started. The writing was on the wall to
- 59:15me. About five years before that,
- 59:17mid-2000s early 2000's when you had go back to Mike Vick and
- 59:23think about him as a person and then look at the Miami teams and
- 59:26then you have bench young and you had the USC teams and then
- 59:29the Gators teams right there. That's what it should have been
- 59:33Jesus. If these guys had something they
- 59:37can make a lot of money in its eventually some it's going to
- 59:40break through in some way. So really probably 20 years ago
- 59:44is when they really started thinking about it.
- 59:46And then 15 years ago, riding loss of ten years ago was in but
- 59:50they completely screwed it up. Yeah.
- 59:53Hello late. But I mean, I'm going to say
- 59:55this, I am all for this being in place awful because you've been
- 1:00:02for a while. I've been I've been on record
- 1:00:05here. I've been on record on Twitter.
- 1:00:06I've been on record at the barbecue on Saturday, or Sunday,
- 1:00:13if you can't go out there, and Use your abilities to make money
- 1:00:19off of your own brand or your own abilities.
- 1:00:25Like what everybody else gets to do that?
- 1:00:27I mean, We had there was there was people that couldn't even
- 1:00:35sell a t-shirt, that they made, even if it had nothing to do
- 1:00:39with football. Nothing like they couldn't sell
- 1:00:41fucking T-shirts because the NCAA says, no can't do that.
- 1:00:46Like it's just ludicrous shit. And I mean that, you know,
- 1:00:52whether whether you want to get on board with players having
- 1:00:56agents and all that stuff, you know, they should always have.
- 1:00:59Been able to use their abilities.
- 1:01:01Like everybody else that's on scholarship in every other
- 1:01:06situation at the University to use whatever talents they have
- 1:01:09while they're there to capitalize on their abilities.
- 1:01:13True, man. There's no reason not to anybody
- 1:01:16else and be like anything. So I mean, but it's very
- 1:01:23unfortunate that the NCAA drag their feet.
- 1:01:27It's unfortunate that they're not right now.
- 1:01:29Taking responsibility, I would have rather them Rush something
- 1:01:35together in the two weeks they had.
- 1:01:36Then just said, all right. Have fun.
- 1:01:41It's like they put no effort into it and they also take no
- 1:01:44responsibility and they're not going to take responsibility for
- 1:01:47any ramifications that come from it.
- 1:01:50Oh no. It's just facts, man.
- 1:01:53They're not taking any of it. And I mean for what they strike
- 1:01:55called him out in the interview said, they just planted this.
- 1:01:58They punted this to the state. They find this new schools in
- 1:02:00the kids and it's going more and more of what is the NCAA even
- 1:02:06here for What are they here for? And it's coming to a point
- 1:02:13especially with the OU Texas news coming out.
- 1:02:16And, you know, Jim Phillips saying yesterday in that
- 1:02:21interview we are 15 team conference.
- 1:02:25And it's like to me, I think the power 5 for football, maybe not
- 1:02:32for everything. I think in the next 10 years,
- 1:02:36the power 5 and maybe even the f.c. or FBS as a whole might
- 1:02:42just break off and say bleep them, we don't need them.
- 1:02:46We've got conferences, we have governing bodies.
- 1:02:49Here we can elect a president of our organization and we can run
- 1:02:54I think it's heading towards that because they don't do
- 1:02:58anything they don't and then when they, when they do
- 1:03:01something that's more, well he can't be eligible this year
- 1:03:05because he's three miles outside the range and you're like, are
- 1:03:08for fuck's sake. Are you kidding me?
- 1:03:11But JT, Daniels, can transfer to Georgia.
- 1:03:15So, with no questions asked, it's like they're free.
- 1:03:19Worthless. I mean they've been worthless
- 1:03:23you know the the picking and choosing of wind to put in
- 1:03:27sanctions and when to penalize a not penalize and band and not
- 1:03:31ban, it's very selective. It feels very at best haphazard
- 1:03:40at worst preferential to certain institutions and just there
- 1:03:49There's no consistency with the application of the rules.
- 1:03:53There's rarely any enforcement of the rules.
- 1:03:57And at some point, you got to say, what the fuck are you
- 1:04:01actually doing? They don't know what they're
- 1:04:04doing other than making a lot of money.
- 1:04:07That's it. They're making a lot of money
- 1:04:10for themselves. More inward salary asinine and
- 1:04:14and now because of them not taking responsibility grunting,
- 1:04:18it not jumping on this, a decade ago, I mean it's the Wild Wild
- 1:04:22West right now. It's the Wild Wild West again,
- 1:04:28they've let they for the states that didn't actually put
- 1:04:32something in place. It's, it's become very much the
- 1:04:37while last for the states that did put something in place.
- 1:04:40Now, they're up against. Can we can we enforce it should
- 1:04:42the NCAA enforce it, who's enforcing it?
- 1:04:46If, if some other if the other states are doing it, should we
- 1:04:49even care whether we enforce it or not.
- 1:04:52If they're still within whatever the NCAA governing body rule.
- 1:04:55Like it's a very loose like when I was thinking of this being in
- 1:05:02place I was like, okay well they'll take Take you know a
- 1:05:05year or two to come up with what this needs to look like and you
- 1:05:09know, a bunch of different eyes from people across the country
- 1:05:11and different backgrounds and all that stuff.
- 1:05:13We'll have a look at this before it goes into place and agents
- 1:05:17will get to weigh in on it and like there are so many people
- 1:05:21that need to have some sort of commentary on this before we
- 1:05:26threw it out there now and I wanted it to start as soon as it
- 1:05:28should but it's solely in the NCAA in.
- 1:05:34It's in their court, that this is going the way it going and
- 1:05:39and kudos to the athletes because they're, they're getting
- 1:05:41paid based on their abilities based on their marketability,
- 1:05:45based on their brand, their image and, you know, kudos to
- 1:05:49them. I know saving was talking about
- 1:05:52the, the quarterback that really hasn't played very much at this
- 1:05:57point. Maybe it's not rice, young
- 1:06:00getting close to a million in close to it, close to a mil.
- 1:06:04And that's 8 plus figure. So yes, I mean that's crazy to
- 1:06:08think. He's gonna get some plus figures
- 1:06:10and he's not, he's not stepped foot on the field.
- 1:06:12He's just the Alabama quarterback.
- 1:06:14Now I find it like him, go get the money.
- 1:06:17Make sure you get a tax attorney because you will need one of the
- 1:06:20million dollars because every legal entity Alabama, state
- 1:06:25governments also hate to tell him this, if you're playing in
- 1:06:30the states of Mississippi endorsing, anything Georgia,
- 1:06:33Florida. Wherever you play, those states
- 1:06:35are probably going to come after you for their tax money.
- 1:06:38Especially if you do something or say something, while you're
- 1:06:41on that state and then there's the federal, so, probably young.
- 1:06:45Make sure you get a good accountant because if not, I do
- 1:06:50not want to see you getting hauled away.
- 1:06:52I don't see anybody getting hauled away to jail for the
- 1:06:55season starts next year, for tax evasion because somebody didn't
- 1:06:58pay your taxes for you. And that's why you need to trust
- 1:07:01your agent because your agent is the person that can kind of
- 1:07:03guide you through. Under this thing.
- 1:07:05Yes, but let's you, and you feel like most of these schools, we
- 1:07:09know the Hokies have their program started up for these
- 1:07:12guys that they're going to them. They're getting the advice that
- 1:07:15they need. But Brian, you saw something
- 1:07:19North Carolina's? Doing you said, Virginia Tech
- 1:07:22needs to start that ASAP. I mean, yeah, they partner with
- 1:07:25the LifeStream group, to use unc's, official, trademark and
- 1:07:29logo in conjunction with name image, and likeness
- 1:07:34opportunities for Collegiate athletes.
- 1:07:38So that's essentially not necessarily directly.
- 1:07:43Representing the university but using the university related
- 1:07:46trademark and logo in relation to what they're doing, Michigan
- 1:07:53I think followed suit with something very similar.
- 1:07:57I mean, like I said, we're really in the early stages here
- 1:07:59and some of this is going to be, all right, we're going to push
- 1:08:02these boundaries as far as we can push them and then see what
- 1:08:05happens. And I think we're in that
- 1:08:07boundary-pushing territory right now and Robbie in our comments
- 1:08:14here, brings up a good point and Foo actually talked about this
- 1:08:17during his discussion relating to name image and likeness.
- 1:08:21But, you know, worrying about whether whether the name image
- 1:08:26of like, the stuff will get in the way of preparation or yeah.
- 1:08:30Doing the right things from football perspective.
- 1:08:32And he said I, you know, I hope that the that what we're doing
- 1:08:36isn't going to impact, how we're, how we're going about our
- 1:08:40business. There's and I think, as long as
- 1:08:43everyone's doing what they need to do outside of the preparation
- 1:08:47that they've been doing previously, this will go off.
- 1:08:50Well, yeah. And I'm hoping that that it does
- 1:08:55because like I said, I think it's been a long time coming.
- 1:09:01And I'm just sad at this point that the NCAA didn't take any
- 1:09:05more responsibility in rolling this out in a way that I think
- 1:09:09would have helped the players and the institutions with a lot
- 1:09:13of uncertainty. Let me ask you this brand
- 1:09:16because you made the point there about does it interfere?
- 1:09:19Does it interfere with classes because it interfere with your
- 1:09:22practice schedules? You're lifting schedules your
- 1:09:24team meetings etc etc really. The classes are important.
- 1:09:31That's going to also be a thing. If a guy gets you can't play
- 1:09:34this week. Why you haven't went to class
- 1:09:37all year. There he is.
- 1:09:38Here essentially academically ineligible but let me ask you
- 1:09:42this front. Do you think there's any
- 1:09:43animosity into the locker room Bryce is about to get a million
- 1:09:46dollars endorsements? And let's say, the guy
- 1:09:51protecting him on the left side is got 20,000.
- 1:09:55And sitting here. Look at him saying dude, if I
- 1:09:58don't do my job, they'd cream, you, you break your leg.
- 1:10:01You never play again. Hmm, maybe I should just slip on
- 1:10:05this one slide step. I don't think that'll happen,
- 1:10:08but you see animosity in size a locker, or what do you think,
- 1:10:12Brian? I don't think so.
- 1:10:13And I'm gonna mention a couple scenarios here.
- 1:10:17The first is, I mean, there's already have and have-nots in
- 1:10:21the locker room. Anybody that says, there isn't
- 1:10:24is kidding themselves. Elves.
- 1:10:26I mean, whether it's favorites, whether their star players
- 1:10:29versus, you know, guys that are more role players on the team.
- 1:10:32I mean there's already a pecking order to some degree in a locker
- 1:10:36room. Some people just, you know, they
- 1:10:38know their roles, they do their job, and they don't care about
- 1:10:41it and sometimes things like that or why people have been
- 1:10:44transferring to other other programs so that shit's already
- 1:10:49there. Number two, I want to say this
- 1:10:52about Braxton Burmeister Trying to get his offensive lineman
- 1:10:57some, some free food for naming. Would you like - that's the type
- 1:11:01of shit? I like there's gonna be
- 1:11:03camaraderie. The people that are the star
- 1:11:05players, they're going to recognize and call out those
- 1:11:09guys that maybe more unsung. And I think that's going to help
- 1:11:14this situation. Whether it's even, just even if
- 1:11:18it's just the call that even if nothing comes from it, the fact
- 1:11:20that they're, you know, the appreciation is being shown, I
- 1:11:24think is something But also, if things do come from and I think
- 1:11:28it's kind of a, hey, well we've got these stars.
- 1:11:31But you know, there's some other guys here that are big part of
- 1:11:34why we're doing what we're doing and how we're having success on
- 1:11:37the football field. It's true.
- 1:11:45Are we going to create unbalance is football going to be way up
- 1:11:49here and every other sport will be way down here.
- 1:11:52Are you think it's going to be? Because I don't think it's gonna
- 1:11:55be that way. I think it is going to be
- 1:11:56individual. Yeah, yours is gymnastics girls
- 1:12:00that she's making more Bryce is right now.
- 1:12:03Yeah, I think it's that there's not going to be in balance in
- 1:12:06terms of how like I think you need to be wary of what role
- 1:12:12boosters have in the Aspect of it necessarily.
- 1:12:16But in terms of The Haves and have-nots, I mean, bags of
- 1:12:21already been dropped for getting kids to come places under the
- 1:12:24table. I think what you're going to
- 1:12:27see. I think Fuente you actually
- 1:12:28talked about a little bit, you know, he essentially says the
- 1:12:31pine nuts, the pie isn't going to get bigger, it's just going
- 1:12:34to get spread directly some of its going to get spread directly
- 1:12:36to the kids, which could impact the university to a degree.
- 1:12:40But I think there's going to be because being a booster is
- 1:12:45getting redefined right now, right?
- 1:12:47Yes it is. So while I agree that some of
- 1:12:50the money that from the big-time guys, instead of going directly
- 1:12:53to the university might get, put into directly to the players.
- 1:12:59For some, a manager, like this things, I think you're going to
- 1:13:02see more smaller folks, step up, that hadn't necessarily been
- 1:13:07giving to the university or only we're giving a little bit to the
- 1:13:10university, start to give more because they can give more To an
- 1:13:14individual that they feels like not only you know, they feel
- 1:13:19like represents their school well but also that can do you
- 1:13:24know good things for their business bring people to their
- 1:13:26business. So I think there's things you
- 1:13:28know the mutual relationship is still there.
- 1:13:32Yep. Absolutely.
- 1:13:33In you know you talk about imbalance.
- 1:13:35I mean I think what's going to happen particularly actually in
- 1:13:40all scores I think you're going to see people like you know
- 1:13:44thing about Jadeveon Clowney. He's a sophomore.
- 1:13:49He should sit out as year. What's probably going to start
- 1:13:51happening? Is you're going to got to have
- 1:13:52guys who are this? Guy's a first-round, pick no
- 1:13:56matter what there's going to be companies coming in to get them.
- 1:14:02Onboard before they leave College.
- 1:14:05And that's going to happen in probably.
- 1:14:09Football men's basketball baseball to a lesser extent.
- 1:14:13Some of the track and field athletes on both men's and
- 1:14:16women's, you know, because then they don't, we like we can do
- 1:14:20this. Like, who's the swimmer girl?
- 1:14:24She was at Stanford, you know, I'm talking about Katie.
- 1:14:27Ledecky. Okay.
- 1:14:28Becky at Stanford, right. Not an amateur at.
- 1:14:32It's weirder with Olympics, but now it's almost Because we have
- 1:14:36this rule. If this was four years ago after
- 1:14:40what she did, and then she went to Stanford Kayla day, Kiwi, be
- 1:14:43a multi-millionaire by them. She might already be, but
- 1:14:47there's that opportunity. Unbelievable track star goes to
- 1:14:50Florida, he's going to be in the hundred meters.
- 1:14:53We're going to go ahead and give them a bunch of money because we
- 1:14:56want him to promote our product. So I think across all lines of
- 1:15:00sports is going to help and wherever you go, it's going to
- 1:15:03be the athlete. It's not going to be necessarily
- 1:15:05where they go. Well, I think also because, you
- 1:15:10know, we talked about the imbalance, but I think in some
- 1:15:12ways, this levels the playing field because you can now build
- 1:15:16a Collegiate image anywhere. Yeah.
- 1:15:19You don't need a blue blood program or a program.
- 1:15:22That's going to the playoff every year or all that.
- 1:15:26You don't need that to build a brand before.
- 1:15:28You can go pro, you can now build your brand within any
- 1:15:33University as long as they have, you know, some sort of decent
- 1:15:36and foundation. So in that way, it does level
- 1:15:39the playing field in my opinion because, you know, you can go to
- 1:15:43a Virginia Tech and and build your brand and it'd be, it'd be
- 1:15:46something that's, you know, kind of a national or least as a
- 1:15:51regional brand. Yeah, big deal before before you
- 1:15:54leave College. You don't have to go to a
- 1:15:57Clemson, or an Alabama, or an Ohio State, or an Oklahoma to do
- 1:16:00that anymore. Very true, very true.
- 1:16:03Hi Brian. We've been talking about doing
- 1:16:06this. This six months, hahaha
- 1:16:09playoffs, playoffs. First of all, we need to get the
- 1:16:13attorneys on the phone because clearly The cfp committee
- 1:16:20somehow hacked, some of our conversations for the last old
- 1:16:25by Design, you son of a bitch. Jenna least old friends design,
- 1:16:29I'm not gonna I'm not kidding like Brian had talked probably
- 1:16:332019, maybe 2018. Yeah, it was as early as 2018,
- 1:16:38you were like 12. And I was like nasty 6 and
- 1:16:42you're like no 12 and Brian begin laying things out and we
- 1:16:45were talking about home games and you were talking about
- 1:16:48conference champions and you were talking about one G5.
- 1:16:53You were talking about the rankings in the committee,
- 1:16:56legitimately everything they're doing is literally what Brian
- 1:17:00playing was? Now let's get into the question
- 1:17:04because obviously the last three or four days there's been a lot
- 1:17:07of Twitter arguments Stuff on the timeline.
- 1:17:12I don't know if you guys saw it, you know, other conversations
- 1:17:15behind the scenes. But let's go ahead and start off
- 1:17:18me and Brian are both for 12. 12 is the answer.
- 1:17:22Sorry, not six and definitely not eat.
- 1:17:25So why not eight Braun because you had that argument already?
- 1:17:30There's several reasons. Why not eat?
- 1:17:33The first reason is that, if you go a, you're pretty much more or
- 1:17:38less every year you're saying, I'm cool with 3 SEC teams in the
- 1:17:43college football playoff Number two, unless you mandate a G5
- 1:17:49school be included. You're probably excluding a G5
- 1:17:53team from your playoff. Sure.
- 1:17:57Number three, you're eliminating the probability of having any
- 1:18:00sort of college football playoff home games from the scenario
- 1:18:05because the there's enough bowls out there where they would not
- 1:18:07let that happen for the A-Team. Those are my big three.
- 1:18:13I mean, there's several other points that we can talk about
- 1:18:16and I'm going to we're going to kind of go through some of these
- 1:18:18other other items here, the big one being the six conference
- 1:18:22championships to cut Conference champions.
- 1:18:26Sorry, so we're talking about more than likely in a given
- 1:18:28year. You're going to have the five
- 1:18:30power, five Champions and the highest ranked G5 Champion.
- 1:18:35Yeah, which is something I love because you're automatically
- 1:18:39including at least one that G5. And I know some people will be
- 1:18:44like, this is nothing, but it's something.
- 1:18:47They get a seat at the table. And that's one thing I like the
- 1:18:51other thing I don't like about eight is If you look at 8 and
- 1:18:56you look back through the years of the.you know the cfp.
- 1:19:01If you're looking at only eight teams you're probably only
- 1:19:04looking at about roughly the top 15.
- 1:19:09Maybe top 12 like we feel like we might can get in that you can
- 1:19:14go to 12 run and I did this scenario me and you ran through
- 1:19:18the scenario 2016 and I know that was a great year for the
- 1:19:22Hokies Week 10 is the beginning of November.
- 1:19:26I would scroll all the way down. There was a team 23, that was
- 1:19:32seven. And two, Going to the final
- 1:19:36weeks. There were some 10 and 9 when
- 1:19:39teams that would have made a 12-team playoffs.
- 1:19:42Legitimately beginning of November.
- 1:19:44You are giving anyone in the top 25, hit legitimate shot to get
- 1:19:49in. What does that mean?
- 1:19:52Run. What does that mean?
- 1:19:56It means that more people have hope later in the year.
- 1:20:01It means that from a this this is my Downstream thought here
- 1:20:08from a recruiting standpoint, say it.
- 1:20:13If I have a chance to make the college football, playoff, if
- 1:20:16I'm looking at teams that have a chance to make the college
- 1:20:19football playoff, there's no way that hurts recruiting.
- 1:20:22Nope, it's a definite. It's a definite bump.
- 1:20:25It's a definite bump to those teams that are consistently in
- 1:20:30the, let's say, top top, 20, consistently the top 20.
- 1:20:34You're essentially one more win away from putting yourself in
- 1:20:37the conversation to make the playoff if you're a top 20 team,
- 1:20:42if you're one, I'm better that next year, you're in the
- 1:20:44conversation to make the college football playoff at 12.
- 1:20:48That opens up a lot more opportunity for these kids to
- 1:20:52get on the national stage and show their talent that that
- 1:20:57matters that matters. I mean, there's there's no way
- 1:21:00around it and it's not just enough to be in the bowl game
- 1:21:05anymore because the Bowls have already been diminished
- 1:21:08significantly. Big time since we went to for.
- 1:21:12Yes, it is. And at this point, there's no
- 1:21:16going back to to. So now in that scenario 12 will
- 1:21:22help create a little bit. I'm not saying a lot, I'm not
- 1:21:25saying we're going to go to all of a sudden there's not going to
- 1:21:28be a dragon do four or five teams that are significantly on
- 1:21:32paper better than everybody else.
- 1:21:34That's not going to change overnight.
- 1:21:37But what is going to change? If you can, if you can Nic two
- 1:21:41or three players off every all those rosters, and Spread those
- 1:21:44out over the next 17. That over time that's going to
- 1:21:49pay some dividends. It's big in evidence and that's
- 1:21:52why I see somebody like Dabo Swinney.
- 1:21:54He's coming out saying, oh there's not 12 good enough to
- 1:21:57eat with playoff and my players only played know down below what
- 1:22:01he's worried about is when he walks into the 217th players.
- 1:22:09Home and tries to sell. Well, that's cool coach but you
- 1:22:15know, this team down the road here, they want me to they were
- 1:22:1914 last year they needed, they need a number to wide receiver.
- 1:22:23I can do that this year and he loses out the blue Royal lose a
- 1:22:28little bit of depth. The the 5220 team gains a better
- 1:22:35player to me. It is a self leveling off of
- 1:22:38college. Is it going to take?
- 1:22:39Is it going to be perfect note? But to have more people at the
- 1:22:44table football sport, Anything Can Happen.
- 1:22:47We've seen it, we've seen it in our lifetime, good Lord, Hail
- 1:22:52Marys, the Appalachian State game against Michigan, Health
- 1:22:55Virginia Tech JM you gain Jesus Christ.
- 1:22:58I mean, let's go with other seven.
- 1:23:00Let's go Boise in the the leadership team was a Rose Bowl,
- 1:23:05boys. You know.
- 1:23:05Oklahoma, yeah. And then it comes to a point to
- 1:23:09that, you know. A point was made to be by
- 1:23:13someone today that what we've seen 512 and like 610 and all
- 1:23:18this, and it's like, yeah, but that's it a bowl game.
- 1:23:21There is nothing on the line, there's nothing on the line.
- 1:23:25We don't know how the teams are going to react Under Pressure
- 1:23:29knowing that I win this game. I go play next week you also are
- 1:23:33going to see the opt-outs that you have none you won't see
- 1:23:36them. Yeah you will.
- 1:23:37So so I mean anybody who has something to play for is not
- 1:23:41going to see I Opt-outs, so that that will help them.
- 1:23:45Not only and I mean financially, I mean, you're talking about
- 1:23:49potentially playing two to three extra games, And I know you're
- 1:23:57Devils were too well. We already played enough games
- 1:24:00or who I forget who was it that said that data?
- 1:24:02It was. Yeah, yeah okay.
- 1:24:04So I mean sure you play an extra game.
- 1:24:08Maybe two, But you play an extra game at eight anyway, so anyone
- 1:24:14advocating for eight? I mean there's already an extra
- 1:24:16game thrown in there anyway. Yep.
- 1:24:20And it's also something with Dabo.
- 1:24:22He also knows dado ever, make it when it was two teams no, he
- 1:24:29never made a BCS game that will has a maiden until it went to
- 1:24:32four, but essentially what you're doing is you're given a
- 1:24:35lot more people swing and the way football is We go to the NFL
- 1:24:42Wildcard Weekend and vision a weekend or some of the wildest
- 1:24:46weekend. When literally the teens, we
- 1:24:47feel of the best teams, right? That's the best team in the
- 1:24:50league right there, they ain't gonna lose they lose, they're a
- 1:24:54better team that walk our team because you're talking about the
- 1:24:58way we kind of envisioned. It is.
- 1:25:00We would have Conference Championship week of next week
- 1:25:03we're playing. One week to prepare, not a
- 1:25:07month. Not three weeks one week to
- 1:25:11prepare go play, Go beat that guy.
- 1:25:14Well, my guy got banged up in the conversation.
- 1:25:15Bishop game, and he's out too bad.
- 1:25:18So sad go play. and then for the one through four teams, you're
- 1:25:23looking at, probably a three week layoff which Is that the me
- 1:25:29Braun? You tell me how you feel three
- 1:25:32weeks. Is that sort of ID ground?
- 1:25:34It's not enough time to get super prep because you have to
- 1:25:37wait a whole week before you figure out who you're playing
- 1:25:39and if a guy's got a high King will be ready so you don't have
- 1:25:44to Super prep and then you get the just the time off in general
- 1:25:47is probably so there's some built-in lag even for the people
- 1:25:52with the bye. And I mean, let's talk about
- 1:25:57another thing. Let's talk about independence.
- 1:26:01What is this going to do with Notre Dame?
- 1:26:03In particular because I don't know if everyone read it, but it
- 1:26:08says Conference champions a champion first six seeds, who
- 1:26:15know, not the first 60s? Sorry your first Force he could
- 1:26:18only get the by sorry conference championships camera Conference
- 1:26:22Championship. Champions can only get the by
- 1:26:25thus Notre Dame will never get a bye.
- 1:26:30Notre Dame for them though. They will always get a week
- 1:26:34break. Look at that one week of rest.
- 1:26:36So it's sort of a little favor for them but to never get a by
- 1:26:43that stinks in the way, right? Because if you if you, if you
- 1:26:45just had, you know, they usually play used to be.
- 1:26:48They play USC or Stanford Lee. Going into an absolute
- 1:26:51Donnybrook with somebody coming out banged up.
- 1:26:55We get a week break, we need to We need three, we need a month.
- 1:27:00Never can do it, you know, keeping the keep saying.
- 1:27:08I go back to this. Wrong non-power can never get it
- 1:27:12by is wrong. If they are the order to feed
- 1:27:16Robbie they can get a call out. Probable but probably not
- 1:27:25possible ever. Well, I've said, the problem
- 1:27:28that I have is that, you know, he's talking about non power 5
- 1:27:33can never get a bite right now. Non-power 5, doesn't even have a
- 1:27:36seat at the table. This gives them a seat.
- 1:27:39Like this, at least gives them something to work for every
- 1:27:42year. Yeah, if you're the best G5, I
- 1:27:44mean and potentially to if your Pac-12 is down here, Big 12 has
- 1:27:49a down here. Yes.
- 1:27:51I mean you might end up having two teams like you get a Memphis
- 1:27:54or UCF or shit. What you mean Ron we got we're
- 1:28:00going to go to some I got to do some research here.
- 1:28:03Was it 2010? I'm trying to type here. 2010, I
- 1:28:12think was the funky year 2010. 2010 was the year.
- 1:28:19This is the way it would have looked already.
- 1:28:22First of all, by this is based on BCS, poll Auburn Oregon, TCU
- 1:28:27Stanford would have got the bye. The next conference
- 1:28:31championships was of how state was a conference Champion.
- 1:28:34Oklahoma was a conference Champion Boise State would have
- 1:28:36made it in that year. So for them, this helps if the
- 1:28:44power 5 has a down year and you can get there potentially get
- 1:28:49too. Like I said, at least get at
- 1:28:53least gives one a seat at the table, just by the fact that you
- 1:28:55have six, not five that get automatic bids.
- 1:29:01Okay. So, you know, I sit here and I
- 1:29:06it's to me. You look at it and it it's more
- 1:29:10positive than negatives. The only negative people are
- 1:29:13trying to say. These are the two negatives.
- 1:29:16There's not enough good teams, which I say, you have to play
- 1:29:19games that let it let it be decided on the.
- 1:29:23It's less than 10 percent of all college football, teams making
- 1:29:26the playoffs, it is essentially and then those 12 teams, They
- 1:29:31get to go into the recruits home and says we are the best 10%.
- 1:29:35We are the best of the best right now.
- 1:29:36In college football, we made the playoffs, whether you win a game
- 1:29:40or you don't, we're the best of the best in college football.
- 1:29:44I think it'll be interesting. Probably the biggest piece where
- 1:29:49it's going to be interesting and me and you are harping on this.
- 1:29:52Talk about the bowl because it's looking like the Bulls are just
- 1:29:55ramrodding themselves in there. Just do two home games folks.
- 1:30:03Correct lat. Yep.
- 1:30:05True that to Cincinnati and Coastal last year would have
- 1:30:10actually both got it in. Would have both got in because
- 1:30:18at the end of the year, Cincinnati was eight.
- 1:30:20Coastal was 12. And I think all the conference
- 1:30:24champions were up in the top here because Alabama, Clemson,
- 1:30:27Ohio State, Oklahoma. And Cincinnati was actually the
- 1:30:32conference Championship ahead of the XO, they both would have
- 1:30:36been in. So there's two seats at the
- 1:30:38table in 2020, but the home games run they're talking about
- 1:30:41first rounds to five through 12 are going to be playing.
- 1:30:45Each other, love it. They got to take it a step
- 1:30:48further, just make the first two round home games and I know the
- 1:30:51bowls are going to they're going to fight that like crazy but
- 1:30:56it's like to be a fan and to say, if Virginia Tech were to
- 1:31:01ever make this Right. Dip in, you know, we try to go
- 1:31:07to one maybe two games a year, it's tough for us, but those
- 1:31:11fans who do make that commitment have that sort of money.
- 1:31:15Can you imagine first of December?
- 1:31:16We want you to travel to Orlando two weeks from now.
- 1:31:19We want you to travel to Texas. Oh you guys keep wanted.
- 1:31:22Now, you need to go to the Rose Bowl and the Championships in
- 1:31:25Indy? How many people can afford to do
- 1:31:27that? How many people actually have
- 1:31:29the time to do that in a seven week span?
- 1:31:34Many and I think having the hub's is going to solve some of
- 1:31:39that. Well yeah.
- 1:31:41And if they do it, you know, where you have a cluster, a
- 1:31:46cluster of bowls that are in the same geographic region.
- 1:31:50I think that'll help but it's not going to solve everything.
- 1:31:53And now they're already talked about potentially not doing the
- 1:31:57the first round at home and if they, if they do that, then I'm
- 1:32:00less on board. With the sister, I still think
- 1:32:0412 is a better number than eight for a lot of reasons, but the
- 1:32:08home game is one of the big draws for me.
- 1:32:11Having that atmosphere at the FBS level is unbelievable.
- 1:32:16Is something that we haven't seen yet.
- 1:32:18Haven't home game. Yeah, matter like that only and
- 1:32:23I think that that's something that I think would be really
- 1:32:26great for college football. So getting a getting away from
- 1:32:30the home game, I mean, imagine like, You know, we talk about
- 1:32:34the the big guys like the LSU's or something.
- 1:32:37I was too. What if, you know what if
- 1:32:40Cincinnati like last year could have hosted one?
- 1:32:44That's a big fucking deal for them.
- 1:32:46Huge deal. What about this?
- 1:32:49What about, you know, a team like, Wisconsin gets to host a
- 1:32:52team like Georgia in Madison and December.
- 1:32:58There's so many kids on the Georgia team that have never
- 1:33:00seen snow in their life and they walk in.
- 1:33:02It's like coach, it's like it's saying - 0, what does that mean?
- 1:33:06We're saying - for what does that mean?
- 1:33:08It's cold. It's going to be windy.
- 1:33:10It's got going to be a fun game to play.
- 1:33:11You're going to hurt. That would be amazing and I also
- 1:33:17think you talk about the Bulls, keep fighting it.
- 1:33:19Here's an idea. Why don't you just sponsor that
- 1:33:23particular playoff game? Would that be your playoff game?
- 1:33:29And we're talking about these this Playoff round being the
- 1:33:32first week of December. So it would still be during most
- 1:33:37campuses fall semester. Yes.
- 1:33:40They would. Although, essentially a with
- 1:33:44that who wouldn't go back? Yeah, playoff game and you're
- 1:33:47out of school. Massacres.
- 1:33:48I'm staying, I'm just going to I'll crash in the Buddy's
- 1:33:52apartment. But either way, we look at it.
- 1:33:55It's a step forward because if you go back and look at the
- 1:33:58history and we went, you know, you look 95 211 Tech would have
- 1:34:03made it every other year, 8 of 16 years and when they said at
- 1:34:07the other day it might not be the best thing for college
- 1:34:09football. In general.
- 1:34:10It's great for Virginia Tech and I'm still back with you on the
- 1:34:15recruiting thing. I think that's the piece wide.
- 1:34:18A bow in certain people will be so against it because there's a
- 1:34:23Blue Bloods. Can no longer say we're the only
- 1:34:25People that have this seat at the table.
- 1:34:27Exactly. We have a essentially, a
- 1:34:32lockdown on, I mean, really, there's about six teens that
- 1:34:35have some sort of Right out the gate you know that they're going
- 1:34:40to be in the conversation at the end of the year.
- 1:34:44Yeah. And they can leverage that in
- 1:34:46recruiting every single fucking Year.
- 1:34:49Yes they can. And it's just one of those
- 1:34:52things that you start letting more people get to the table.
- 1:34:58Be more few less plates for those guys, and I think again,
- 1:35:02that's why Dabo is so against it.
- 1:35:04I haven't heard saving say anything, I haven't heard like
- 1:35:07Kirby, Smart, or Lincoln Riley. I think some of these guys would
- 1:35:11understand, will, hey, the only one that's like a mid tier that
- 1:35:14has spoken out against it as Mack Brown.
- 1:35:17But What did Max? I haven't, I haven't heard Max a
- 1:35:23nice at what he said, his players didn't like the idea of
- 1:35:27playing extra games. And that they didn't think that
- 1:35:31there were 12 plus 12, good enough teams to make.
- 1:35:33Can I say something? Those guys don't want to play in
- 1:35:36the NFL then because the NFL now you might have to play 22 game
- 1:35:40or 21 games to win a Super Bowl. So do you want that?
- 1:35:47Be the first question, I'd ask you.
- 1:35:48Oh, so do y'all going to play in the NFL?
- 1:35:49Oh yeah. They're going to make them.
- 1:35:50Give me millions of dollars. okay, but you have to take 21
- 1:35:56and I must say this, so We're talking about the difference
- 1:36:01between bowl games and a college football, playoff game.
- 1:36:07All right, so a bowl game. I get so unless you are playing
- 1:36:14for something. There's not a lot of incentive
- 1:36:18to want to play an extra game. Put your body through the
- 1:36:20practice time on your preparation, all that stuff, but
- 1:36:25if you are playing for a chance to win a National Title, I can't
- 1:36:30understand how I would not want to be a part of that.
- 1:36:33Exactly, the maximum amount of games you would play is 17.
- 1:36:37That is a typical NFL season. So, that's nothing in to say,
- 1:36:44there's not 12 teams out there, man.
- 1:36:46Every time I hear somebody say that, it's like, you have to
- 1:36:49play games. Crazy thing we already talked
- 1:36:52about is the conference's. They don't they're not playing
- 1:36:54enough games. To accurately depict who the
- 1:36:58conference Representatives should be, let alone, you know,
- 1:37:02who's going to rub, be the for, I mean, we can, we can talk all
- 1:37:05we want to about well yeah, they look good on paper or yeah.
- 1:37:09They pass the eye test or this that and the third and we see
- 1:37:14it. But until you play the game, you
- 1:37:16don't really know. You don't know the eye test,
- 1:37:19they're better in every aspect. If they're going to kill them by
- 1:37:22five touchdowns, they've also had four weeks off.
- 1:37:27The players who are really banged up, aren't ready to go.
- 1:37:30And now we're talking rust. I can tell you a lot of Super
- 1:37:34Bowl games that if you trusted the eye test, or what Pedro
- 1:37:38said, you'd have a lot different outcome.
- 1:37:41You damn, right by that. All right, Brian, anything
- 1:37:44breaking. As we sit here, other than we've
- 1:37:47been going well, over 90 minutes, which is not shocking,
- 1:37:50because you boys had none. This in two weeks we're catching
- 1:37:54up guys. We had a lot of news and we
- 1:37:55wanted to really kind of go into The name image or likeness and
- 1:37:59playoff thing a little bit deep here, just because it's been
- 1:38:02burning on us for a while, so here we are.
- 1:38:05Yeah, I appreciate you guys hanging out with us for, for a
- 1:38:09little over 90 minutes here, approaching 100 here approaching
