- 0:58Speaker 1: get your podcasts. It's the greatest thing since the smell
- 1:03Speaker 1: of freshly made bread. I was driving through Norwood recently
- 1:07Speaker 1: when my nostrils detected the unmistakable aroma of fresh bread.
- 1:13Speaker 1: It brought back memories of when I lived in Syracuse,
- 1:15Speaker 1: New York. There's a place there called Columbus Baking Company
- 1:19Speaker 1: that makes Italian bread, and it might be the single
- 1:23Speaker 1: best smelling thing on the face of the earth. I'm
- 1:26Speaker 1: going to be back in Syracuse for an event in
- 1:29Speaker 1: a few weeks, and I might have to capture the
- 1:31Speaker 1: audio for this podcast of me walking into the Columbus
- 1:36Speaker 1: Baking Company and taking a deep, satisfying sniff. Ah. Now,
- 1:45Speaker 1: let's get to football. Moments after the Bengals selected Shamar
- 1:49Speaker 1: Stewart with a seventeenth pick in the draft, Al Golden
- 1:52Speaker 1: gushed over his elite physical traits and said he's a
- 1:56Speaker 1: young man that we're really looking forward to working with.
- 2:00Speaker 1: While he had him in defensive meetings during the off
- 2:02Speaker 1: season program, Golden never had the opportunity to work with
- 2:06Speaker 1: Shamar on the field, and when training camp opened this
- 2:10Speaker 1: week and Stuart still wasn't practicing, the team's new defensive
- 2:14Speaker 1: coordinator sounded concerned. I just feel like, you know, I'm
- 2:18Speaker 1: on hold right now. You know, I can't.
- 2:19Speaker 2: I can't.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I can't give him that wisdom or that experience of
- 2:23Speaker 3: those gifts. And at the end of the day, you know,
- 2:27Speaker 3: that's business, and obviously that's between his camp and and
- 2:31Speaker 3: and upstairs. But it doesn't, it doesn't doesn't make it easier.
- 2:36Speaker 3: You know, I want to work with him. I want
- 2:38Speaker 3: to help him be the best he can be and
- 2:41Speaker 3: make the greatest impact that he can make. And obviously
- 2:43Speaker 3: the sooner the better for that.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Thankfully, the weight ended after just three practices. After a lengthy,
- 2:48Speaker 1: ended times acrimonious negotiation between the Bengals and the agent
- 2:53Speaker 1: for Stuart, the team's first round pick, signed a four
- 2:56Speaker 1: year contract on Saturday that includes a fifth year option,
- 3:00Speaker 1: and while it wasn't easy, Chamar says, there are no
- 3:03Speaker 1: hard feelings. End of the day, I'm happy to be
- 3:06Speaker 1: in Bengal.
- 3:06Speaker 4: I'm I'm happy that I got driving here.
- 3:09Speaker 3: You know, we have a long relationship ahead of us.
- 3:12Speaker 1: You know, there's no bad blood. You know, this is
- 3:14Speaker 1: how things go sometimes. When Stewart walked onto the practice
- 3:17Speaker 1: field on Sunday, he was immediately greeted by defensive line
- 3:21Speaker 1: coach Jerry Montgomery for some one on one tutoring.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Very hands on, I'll tell him, not very hands on.
- 3:27Speaker 5: You don't let nothing slide.
- 3:28Speaker 1: If you don't like something, you're doing it again, no.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Matter how many times you messing up, you're doing it
- 3:32Speaker 4: over again.
- 3:33Speaker 1: It's no secret that Chamar didn't have many sacks in
- 3:36Speaker 1: his college career four and a half to be exact,
- 3:39Speaker 1: in three years at Texas A and M. But Montgomery says,
- 3:43Speaker 1: too many people fixate on what Chamar didn't do well
- 3:47Speaker 1: and ignore where he excelled.
- 3:49Speaker 6: We're literally talking about him missing sacks, right, But the
- 3:56Speaker 6: guy is violent in the run game. He affects the
- 4:00Speaker 6: quarterback at a high rate.
- 4:01Speaker 7: When I say affected, he's back there right, first year playing,
- 4:06Speaker 7: truly starting, so he's just got to learn how to finish.
- 4:10Speaker 7: But more importantly, he's beating up on tight ends. He
- 4:15Speaker 7: is destroying tackles, run and pass. His effort and play
- 4:20Speaker 7: style is phenomenal. Like his effort to the ball is
- 4:24Speaker 7: he leaps? Okay? Now, like I told everybody, if he
- 4:30Speaker 7: affected the quarterback, meaning he got him off the spot,
- 4:33Speaker 7: or he had hits the balls out, are he scrambled
- 4:37Speaker 7: already missed some opportunities. But if he just finishes on
- 4:42Speaker 7: let's just say he gets I don't know, you call
- 4:45Speaker 7: it six seven sacks, you know what, He's not a
- 4:48Speaker 7: Cincinnati bank.
- 4:49Speaker 1: In other words, Montgomery believes that Stuart would have been
- 4:52Speaker 1: gone before pick number seventeen. Jerry compares Chamar to a
- 4:57Speaker 1: first round pick he coached in Green Bay, John Gary,
- 5:01Speaker 1: who went to his first Pro Bowl last year.
- 5:03Speaker 7: You know, he had all the trades, but he had
- 5:07Speaker 7: he had good pressure productions, but he didn't have the
- 5:10Speaker 7: sac production. Well, he gets to the league, he gets goos.
- 5:14Speaker 6: Up, he's on an edge more than he's been in college.
- 5:19Speaker 2: And then all of a sudden.
- 5:20Speaker 8: He he has to productions, the No Po Bowl, those
- 5:25Speaker 8: type of things. So but again, like I said, if
- 5:28Speaker 8: he had the numbers would have been long gone. I'm
- 5:33Speaker 8: saying top five.
- 5:35Speaker 7: He was by far the most explosive player in the draft.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Would it have been nice for Stuart to take part
- 5:41Speaker 1: in every OTA mini camp and practice so far? Of course,
- 5:46Speaker 1: but he still has roughly forty days in three preseason
- 5:49Speaker 1: games to get ready for the regular season opener in Cleveland.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Here's Zach Taylor and what he's looking for from the
- 5:56Speaker 1: twenty one year old rookie.
- 5:58Speaker 9: Improve every day. You know, just like any rookie, be
- 6:01Speaker 9: a consistent guy. Don't make the same mistake twice. We
- 6:04Speaker 9: know that there's gonna be some mistakes. There's gonna be
- 6:07Speaker 9: some some installed overloads early on in the process. It's
- 6:11Speaker 9: just making sure, Okay, I made a mistake on this,
- 6:13Speaker 9: I'm gonna make church corrective. I'm better there, and then
- 6:16Speaker 9: you know, plug the lead as it occurs somewhere else.
- 6:17Speaker 9: So again, he's got plenty of time, you know. It's
- 6:21Speaker 9: it's great to get him now when we can, because
- 6:22Speaker 9: we haven't even put pads.
- 6:23Speaker 1: On, put pins on tomorrow.
- 6:24Speaker 9: He's got seven practice perfor coplate Ullys, and there's play
- 6:27Speaker 9: a time to get him out.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Of Nobody in the building knows Chamar better than his
- 6:31Speaker 1: former college teammate and close friend mckin lee Jackson, who
- 6:35Speaker 1: says the six foot five, two hundred and seventy pound
- 6:38Speaker 1: defensive end with four five three speed and a forty
- 6:43Speaker 1: inch vertical leap will have a major impact.
- 6:46Speaker 4: He's a special guy. Pus a person out of background.
- 6:48Speaker 4: I see he came from, and I know where you
- 6:51Speaker 4: can go. I know what he can do for this team.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Like I said, he's really specially do like a walking transformer.
- 6:57Speaker 1: He's like a unit.
- 6:58Speaker 4: So and the thing is, I've seen that by that
- 7:01Speaker 4: if he is at eighteen, I mean it was crazy then,
- 7:04Speaker 4: but it's crazy nine. Its form more emotional. You know,
- 7:06Speaker 4: he's dangerous on the field, so you know, I'm just
- 7:08Speaker 4: I'm excited for him. Man, I got high to take
- 7:11Speaker 4: this for him, and I said, I'm gonna set the
- 7:13Speaker 4: ball high for him, and I'm gonna pushaby they to
- 7:15Speaker 4: who's their standard, you know, Like I'm saying, I'm more
- 7:17Speaker 4: excited for the other guys to see what's gonna happen
- 7:19Speaker 4: with him, because I've already seen it. Observe guy I
- 7:22Speaker 4: pushed a lot out of I mean, he was always
- 7:24Speaker 4: that they quick, the fast, like to get out the
- 7:27Speaker 4: ball type of guy. We had to push him to
- 7:29Speaker 4: this to be what he is now. Hey, you know,
- 7:31Speaker 4: I said, I'm really proud of what he came.
- 7:33Speaker 1: The Bengals hold their first fully padded practice on Monday morning,
- 7:37Speaker 1: and I can't wait to see Stewart line up against
- 7:40Speaker 1: the Marius Mems and Orlando Brown Junior in one on
- 7:44Speaker 1: one pass rush drills. Now, let's hear from my next guest.
- 7:49Speaker 1: In his first game following an injury to Zach Moss
- 7:52Speaker 1: last year, Chase Brown had twenty seven carries for one
- 7:55Speaker 1: hundred and twenty yards and five catches for thirty seven more.
- 7:59Speaker 1: From that until the end of the year, he was
- 8:02Speaker 1: one of the NFL's most productive backs. Now, heading into
- 8:05Speaker 1: his third season, Chase is clearly number one on the
- 8:09Speaker 1: depth chart and expected to be one of Cincinnati's top
- 8:12Speaker 1: offensive weapons. I caught up with him one on one
- 8:15Speaker 1: this week. Chase, it certainly sounds like you are going
- 8:19Speaker 1: to have an increased workload this year. Did you adjust
- 8:23Speaker 1: your offseason in any way to prepare for the likelihood
- 8:26Speaker 1: of that?
- 8:26Speaker 10: Every single offseason I go really hard, So no, not really.
- 8:30Speaker 10: I come in every single year expecting to earn a role,
- 8:35Speaker 10: you know what I mean, expecting to prove myself over again.
- 8:37Speaker 5: And that's my mindset this year.
- 8:39Speaker 10: And you know, coming into this year with you know,
- 8:42Speaker 10: as a starter, as a more established player, I'm just
- 8:45Speaker 10: looking to build on what I did last year and
- 8:46Speaker 10: helped this Upunians.
- 8:48Speaker 1: A heavy workload would not be unusual for you. Going
- 8:51Speaker 1: back to your last year in Illinois, you had thirty
- 8:54Speaker 1: five or more touches in five different games. You have
- 8:57Speaker 1: forty one carries in one. Yeah, pare you for the
- 9:01Speaker 1: possibility of having a huge workload?
- 9:03Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean, I guess you could say that I
- 9:05Speaker 10: was a workhorse in college and I can do it
- 9:07Speaker 10: in the NFL too, except now I'm a more dynamic player.
- 9:11Speaker 10: You know, my ability to run rows, my ability to
- 9:13Speaker 10: catch the ball, my ability to make plays and make
- 9:15Speaker 10: big plays is completely different than what it was in college.
- 9:18Speaker 10: So that's why I'm bringing to the team this year
- 9:20Speaker 10: is just my explosive ability and that home running, home
- 9:24Speaker 10: run hitting ability to.
- 9:26Speaker 5: You know, put that ball and ends on any time.
- 9:28Speaker 1: That game where you had forty one carries, I think
- 9:30Speaker 1: you also had four catches, What did you feel like
- 9:33Speaker 1: the next day?
- 9:35Speaker 5: You know what I really Wasn't that sore? I mean,
- 9:38Speaker 5: I took care of my body in college, and I
- 9:42Speaker 5: take even more care.
- 9:43Speaker 1: But now so.
- 9:45Speaker 5: Heavy workload, you know, doesn't you know. I'm not going
- 9:48Speaker 5: to shy away from that anyway.
- 9:49Speaker 10: I just take the responsibility to take better care of
- 9:51Speaker 10: my body, invest in my body, and I'll be just going.
- 9:55Speaker 1: We're visiting with Chase Brown. You and andre Yosi Bosh
- 9:58Speaker 1: spend a lot of time together before practice, doing drills
- 10:01Speaker 1: things like that. Describe your relationship with him, because it
- 10:04Speaker 1: seems like at times you two guys are almost inseparable.
- 10:07Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, we look for ways to better ourselves
- 10:10Speaker 5: every single day.
- 10:11Speaker 10: Andandre and I connected and got really close in Atlanta
- 10:14Speaker 10: and does all the work that we put.
- 10:16Speaker 5: In out there with our coach Drew.
- 10:19Speaker 10: You know, that's uh that's time that really allowed us
- 10:22Speaker 10: to get to know each other, uh, get to know
- 10:24Speaker 10: how to push each other and uh honestly trying to
- 10:27Speaker 10: out do one another. We're we're both extremely competitive and
- 10:30Speaker 10: we're both trying to you know, you know, continue to
- 10:34Speaker 10: you know, increase our role in you.
- 10:35Speaker 5: Know, such an explosive offense.
- 10:38Speaker 1: I feel like maybe people are sleeping on him a
- 10:40Speaker 1: little bit. Do you feel the same way?
- 10:41Speaker 5: Definitely. I mean Andre is capable of doing everything, but
- 10:46Speaker 5: you know, he's behind two superstar receivers, so I mean,
- 10:50Speaker 5: being a three in this offense is you know, that's
- 10:53Speaker 5: a pretty big deal. So, you know, I'm just proud
- 10:57Speaker 5: of him.
- 10:57Speaker 10: And you know, his mentality that he brings to practice
- 11:00Speaker 10: every single day and his mentality of you know, trying
- 11:03Speaker 10: to get better on a daily basis is honestly on
- 11:05Speaker 10: like nobody else.
- 11:07Speaker 5: So I'm excited for him and what he's about to
- 11:09Speaker 5: do this year.
- 11:10Speaker 1: A week or two ago, Eagles got their Super Bowl rings,
- 11:13Speaker 1: including your twin brothers, Sidney. Yes, I know you love him.
- 11:16Speaker 1: I know you're thrilled for him. Are you a little
- 11:17Speaker 1: bit jealous?
- 11:19Speaker 5: I no, No, I don't. I don't. You know, I
- 11:21Speaker 5: don't envy him in that way at all. I'm proud
- 11:24Speaker 5: of him. Honestly.
- 11:26Speaker 10: He worked hard for that, the team earned that, and
- 11:28Speaker 10: you know, now it's our turn to go get ours.
- 11:30Speaker 10: So that's kind of how I'm thinking about it.
- 11:32Speaker 1: So during this time of year, you guys are in
- 11:36Speaker 1: the building for eleven hours a day, whatever it is,
- 11:39Speaker 1: and you've got a six month old son. How are
- 11:42Speaker 1: you connecting with him during training camp?
- 11:45Speaker 5: Honestly? Yeah, the honest answer is in not that much.
- 11:49Speaker 10: He's to sleep in the mornings and when I get home,
- 11:52Speaker 10: he's pretty much going to bed. So I'm trying to
- 11:54Speaker 10: do as much as I can to help and make
- 11:55Speaker 10: sure even though I'm not there, I'm still present.
- 11:58Speaker 5: And you know what's so great about my support system
- 12:01Speaker 5: at home is they understood. You know, my girlfriend, she understands,
- 12:04Speaker 5: you know, what what I'm going through and.
- 12:08Speaker 10: How important camp is for not only myself but for
- 12:11Speaker 10: this team. So she's you know, taking out a big role.
- 12:14Speaker 10: But you know, we got a you know, our baby,
- 12:16Speaker 10: Sarah the babysitter Sarah, that's helping us on a daily
- 12:19Speaker 10: basis and allowing her to go to her own things.
- 12:21Speaker 10: So just grateful for my support system at home and
- 12:26Speaker 10: making sure that my little man is taken care of.
- 12:28Speaker 1: How many people yell out to you, I've got you
- 12:31Speaker 1: on my fantasy team on a regular basis A lot.
- 12:33Speaker 11: I mean on social media, whether I'm you know, getting
- 12:37Speaker 11: a smoothie somewhere or I'm trying to, you know, go
- 12:40Speaker 11: find some new clothes or something, and people always saying
- 12:42Speaker 11: something to me about fantasy football.
- 12:44Speaker 5: So I guess. I guess people are drafting me this year.
- 12:49Speaker 1: No doubt. Is it flattering or in some ways uncomfortable.
- 12:52Speaker 10: No, not uncomfortable at all. I'm trying to embrace it, honestly.
- 12:56Speaker 10: I mean, made a lot of plays last year. I'm
- 12:58Speaker 10: under the same thing this year.
- 12:59Speaker 1: So last thing for Chase Brown, Dan Pitcher said recently
- 13:02Speaker 1: that you are a top ten back in the NFL.
- 13:06Speaker 1: I assume you heard that or saw that. What did
- 13:08Speaker 1: you think? And is he selling you low?
- 13:11Speaker 5: Selling me low?
- 13:12Speaker 1: Yeah? Should it be? He's a top five bat?
- 13:13Speaker 5: No, I appreciate him, you know, I think extremely high.
- 13:17Speaker 10: Coach Pitcher and everything that he does with this offense,
- 13:20Speaker 10: and you know, just grateful that you know, he's uh,
- 13:24Speaker 10: you know, making me a big part of you.
- 13:26Speaker 5: Know, what we're doing here. I'm doing everything i can
- 13:30Speaker 5: to you know, help this offense be more explosive.
- 13:32Speaker 10: So just grateful that he trusts me, trust my playmaking ability,
- 13:36Speaker 10: and we're just going to continue to grow. But I mean,
- 13:39Speaker 10: I'm not even paying attention to you know, top ten.
- 13:41Speaker 5: This top ten n I'm just gonna go out there.
- 13:43Speaker 5: I'm going to play, take.
- 13:44Speaker 10: It one game at a time and we'll see at
- 13:46Speaker 10: the end of the season. A lot of those rankings,
- 13:49Speaker 10: I mean, a lot of its hype, so you know
- 13:51Speaker 10: what I mean. The Chase Brown name is just it's
- 13:54Speaker 10: just starting to get big. So we're just gonna keep
- 13:56Speaker 10: on building that up. And you ask me that same
- 13:59Speaker 10: question and then end of the.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Season, consider it done. Appreciate your time to have a
- 14:03Speaker 1: healthy camp in a great season.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Before an in depth look at the first week of camp,
- 14:07Speaker 1: here's a quick reminder that the Bengals Booth podcast is
- 14:10Speaker 1: brought to you by pay Corps, proud to be the
- 14:12Speaker 1: Bengals official HR software provider by Alta Fiber future proof
- 14:17Speaker 1: fiber internet designed elevate your home, business and community to
- 14:20Speaker 1: a new level and by Kettering Health the best care
- 14:24Speaker 1: for the best fans. Kettering Health is the official healthcare
- 14:27Speaker 1: provider of the Bengals. Now time to look at the
- 14:30Speaker 1: first few days of camp with Bengals dot Com editor
- 14:34Speaker 1: Jeff Butch Hobson Butch, what is your number one takeaway
- 14:40Speaker 1: after the first four practices of Bengals training camp.
- 14:43Speaker 2: I love morning practices and I think the players do too.
- 14:46Speaker 2: After that, I would say they got to be pretty
- 14:49Speaker 2: happy with this bookie class. I mean the two guys
- 14:53Speaker 2: that have sitt out to me right away, to the
- 14:54Speaker 2: linebackers to meet you, Snighte and Barrett Catter. I think
- 14:58Speaker 2: the running back Taj Rooks has looked impressive anytime he's
- 15:03Speaker 2: touched it. And we'll find out about Fairchild their third
- 15:06Speaker 2: round and we'll find out about that pretty quick. But
- 15:08Speaker 2: you know, and Schimar just came in and you know,
- 15:13Speaker 2: so we'll get a beat on him. But right now,
- 15:16Speaker 2: my takeaways number forty four Demetrius Knight, They're going to
- 15:20Speaker 2: be happy they drifted them.
- 15:22Speaker 1: I think my biggest takeaway so far is that Al
- 15:24Speaker 1: Golden was the tremendous higher and we thought it, but
- 15:28Speaker 1: now we're seeing it. Got to keep in mind every
- 15:31Speaker 1: day how good this offense is. So anytime the defense
- 15:34Speaker 1: has what is considered to be a win, or in
- 15:37Speaker 1: the case of today, like half a win, that says
- 15:40Speaker 1: a lot about Al Gold And I think he's the
- 15:44Speaker 1: ultimate attention to detail guy. I think the players are
- 15:47Speaker 1: buying in. There's an enthusiasm on that side of the
- 15:50Speaker 1: ball I haven't seen in a while. I feel very
- 15:53Speaker 1: confident in thinking. And maybe this is stupid to say
- 15:55Speaker 1: after four practices that the Bengals at worst are going
- 15:59Speaker 1: to be a middle of the pack defense instead of,
- 16:03Speaker 1: you know, near the bottom of the pack.
- 16:05Speaker 2: If the middle of the pack, we're all smoking cigars, right,
- 16:09Speaker 2: I mean, I think the you know. I compared it
- 16:12Speaker 2: to Mike zimmers Higher. Two different guys, two different systems,
- 16:16Speaker 2: but both highly regarded defensive coordinators who have been asked
- 16:21Speaker 2: to come in and steady the ship for a great offense.
- 16:24Speaker 2: I think back to two thousand and eight, zimmer inherited
- 16:28Speaker 2: a bunch of nameless guys, had finished twenty seventh. They
- 16:34Speaker 2: didn't make many additions into eight, and they went from
- 16:38Speaker 2: twenty seventh to like twelfth, and then next year after
- 16:41Speaker 2: that they went forth and they started going to playoffs
- 16:45Speaker 2: with when they had quarterbacks like Carson Palmer and Andy Dalton.
- 16:48Speaker 2: They started going to the playoffs with competent defenses. I
- 16:51Speaker 2: kind of compare that to this, and you know, but
- 16:55Speaker 2: except we're talking about the best offense in a national
- 16:59Speaker 2: football league, whereas, like you know, back in the Zimmer era,
- 17:02Speaker 2: it was it was a good offense, but it wasn't this.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, all right. You named some of the rookies
- 17:08Speaker 1: as guys that have caught your eyes so far, but
- 17:12Speaker 1: how about in general, who are some of the players
- 17:14Speaker 1: that have really stood out to you?
- 17:15Speaker 7: Well?
- 17:15Speaker 2: I thought a guy today at the end of the
- 17:17Speaker 2: the last the last rep of the day is rain
- 17:20Speaker 2: began to fall. Didn't that feel nice? TJ. Slayton made
- 17:24Speaker 2: it really had a real good pressure inside. They were
- 17:26Speaker 2: on goal line, and I put just enough pressure on
- 17:29Speaker 2: Brow to force and in completion and those were few
- 17:32Speaker 2: and five between because Joe was hot all day. But
- 17:35Speaker 2: to your point about Al Golden, you know, Joe sifted,
- 17:40Speaker 2: shifted all day and then when they started going at
- 17:43Speaker 2: the eleven and low red zone and then on goal line,
- 17:47Speaker 2: they stiffened up and the guys were hired to come by.
- 17:50Speaker 2: But I think t J. Slaton Slayton, you can feel
- 17:54Speaker 2: the difference that he provides. And maybe it's just because
- 17:56Speaker 2: he's wearing a DJ Readers number. I don't know, but
- 17:58Speaker 2: there hasn't been a guy like that since DJ Reader
- 18:01Speaker 2: and he's a presence. You've felt it, You've seen it,
- 18:04Speaker 2: and I think you felt it today when it went
- 18:06Speaker 2: go on.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Badly needed and so far doing exactly what they need
- 18:10Speaker 1: him to do. I've got a few guys, most of
- 18:12Speaker 1: them are on defense. Cam Taylor Britt didn't do much today.
- 18:15Speaker 1: I don't know if you know the GPS suggested that
- 18:19Speaker 1: he needed a day of rest or what it is.
- 18:21Speaker 1: But in any case, I think he's been terrific so
- 18:24Speaker 1: far in camp. Logan Wilson looks healthy and frisky and
- 18:29Speaker 1: you know, the perfect guy to run Golden system. Fig
- 18:33Speaker 1: Newton I think has been impressive. I'm really impressed by
- 18:37Speaker 1: watching his leadership. I remember in the offseason Chuck Burks
- 18:44Speaker 1: called him the heartbeat of the defense and I tweeted
- 18:47Speaker 1: that and got some pushback from people thinking that that
- 18:50Speaker 1: was somehow a knock on the other guys when it's not.
- 18:53Speaker 1: He's just one of those guys. I don't think there's
- 18:55Speaker 1: anybody on the team that encourages his teammates more than
- 18:59Speaker 1: that guy does. So I love that. And then money Mack,
- 19:02Speaker 1: money Mac looks like Moneymack again. He hasn't missed the
- 19:05Speaker 1: kick yet. He's gone back to the way he kicked
- 19:08Speaker 1: it as a rookie with a slight draw, so it
- 19:11Speaker 1: kind of starts out towards the right, upright and winds
- 19:13Speaker 1: up right in the middle. Looks great.
- 19:15Speaker 2: If that's what he did his rookie year, keep doing it,
- 19:17Speaker 2: I think. And I guess maybe that was the kick
- 19:19Speaker 2: against Green Bay when he had the draw and he
- 19:22Speaker 2: thought he had stuck it in and made it to
- 19:24Speaker 2: beat the Packers, but it didn't. But Aaron Rodgers was
- 19:28Speaker 2: the quarterback that day. Maybe he'll stick it when Aaron
- 19:32Speaker 2: Rodgers was the quarterback of the Steelers and beat itim.
- 19:34Speaker 2: But yeah, you know, getting back the fig. I talked
- 19:36Speaker 2: with his family a little bit his rookie year. He's
- 19:38Speaker 2: an interesting guy. He he's the guy that speaks at
- 19:42Speaker 2: that speaks at the family gatherings, you know, big family
- 19:47Speaker 2: growing up in Louisiana and he's the guy they choose
- 19:51Speaker 2: and he's just an outgoing guy, very personable, and I
- 19:56Speaker 2: think that's exactly And Chuck's an interesting guy too, because
- 19:58Speaker 2: I think Chuck quietly done a great job. If you
- 20:01Speaker 2: take a look at that secondary, those are all the
- 20:04Speaker 2: guys that have been here since he's been here. I
- 20:06Speaker 2: think only Jalen Davis uh is here from that Super
- 20:10Speaker 2: Bowl secondary. Everybody else has been drafted or signed when
- 20:14Speaker 2: Chuck is here, and uh, you know, I think they've clearly.
- 20:18Speaker 2: I think this camp, we've seen their depth. I actually
- 20:20Speaker 2: talked to said something that Chuck today. I said, the
- 20:22Speaker 2: way you guys are playing reminds me of your first
- 20:25Speaker 2: camp And you remember when that's when a Woozier was
- 20:27Speaker 2: playing at a very high Pro Bowl level and Eli
- 20:32Speaker 2: Apple was all over the place. So Mike Hilton was
- 20:34Speaker 2: was was sticking with people. I kind of get that
- 20:36Speaker 2: vibe vibe with this group, you know, And it was
- 20:39Speaker 2: interesting that although you could see camp wasn't out there
- 20:42Speaker 2: because Joe Joe had his way. But then you know,
- 20:45Speaker 2: it's hard to uh, it's kind of get on the
- 20:48Speaker 2: DBS when seven on seven is a year for the
- 20:51Speaker 2: offense anyway, and that just isn't a quarterback over there
- 20:56Speaker 2: that's accuably the best quarterback in a game. With all
- 20:58Speaker 2: due respect to Patrick Mahomes, you know, I think Joe
- 21:01Speaker 2: was probably better than five more categories. So if you're
- 21:05Speaker 2: talking about pure you know, pure statistical by the position,
- 21:09Speaker 2: that's the guy. And so but you know, it's like
- 21:12Speaker 2: talking to Lemonta Parish the other day when he went
- 21:13Speaker 2: into the Ring of honor, the best, the best receivers
- 21:16Speaker 2: he faced, where Isaac Curtis and Charlie Joyner, those were
- 21:21Speaker 2: those are the best guys that he faced in his career,
- 21:23Speaker 2: he said, And may help them practice. And I think
- 21:25Speaker 2: the DB's you know a game is going to be
- 21:28Speaker 2: at the d at the beach after facing this guy.
- 21:30Speaker 1: It's so true. There was a pass early in practice
- 21:33Speaker 1: today Burrow to Tea. He wasn't really open, but the
- 21:37Speaker 1: pass was that good and t is so big and
- 21:41Speaker 1: his catch radius is so crazy that even if the
- 21:44Speaker 1: coverage is as good as it can be, those guys
- 21:47Speaker 1: are so freaking good that they complete the pass anyway.
- 21:49Speaker 2: I mean, he he burrowed just kind of shoulder fake
- 21:55Speaker 2: or whatever, just looked at Jamaira in the flat and
- 21:58Speaker 2: just shot it to Giseki, you know. And then on
- 22:01Speaker 2: another play he looks somebody else off and it was
- 22:05Speaker 2: and it was Jama, you know, down the scenam and
- 22:07Speaker 2: you're thinking, man, this is almost like it's almost like
- 22:10Speaker 2: a video game, you know. So but that's this is
- 22:13Speaker 2: this is training camp, right, Hoary. I mean, everybody's winning
- 22:17Speaker 2: the Super Bowl, and everybody's the first first offense, the
- 22:20Speaker 2: number one ranked offense.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Maybe not the Browns. Have there been any pleasant surprises
- 22:26Speaker 1: so far? In your mind?
- 22:27Speaker 2: There's one guy said to me who I trust, implicitly
- 22:30Speaker 2: said it's a little too early for surprises. But I
- 22:33Speaker 2: will say, uh, and I don't think McPherson is a surprise.
- 22:38Speaker 2: I thought he would come you know, I thought he'd
- 22:39Speaker 2: come out looked, you know, just I figured he'd do
- 22:41Speaker 2: what he does, going and just and tweak and put
- 22:43Speaker 2: himself in a garage. And he's done that. I think
- 22:47Speaker 2: what I kind of like to see a little bit
- 22:51Speaker 2: is the Jermaine Burton. You know, I think he really
- 22:57Speaker 2: he's you know, he looks like he's should have looked
- 23:01Speaker 2: coming out last year. But I think this is a
- 23:02Speaker 2: guy that he's just you know, he's been through what
- 23:05Speaker 2: I talked to Browning about this a little bit, and
- 23:07Speaker 2: his head's not spinning. He's been through a year, and
- 23:10Speaker 2: I guess you got to just kind of put yourself
- 23:11Speaker 2: in your own shoes, you know. Coming out of college,
- 23:14Speaker 2: you know, I couldn't tie my shoes. You know, I
- 23:16Speaker 2: think in a couple of years.
- 23:18Speaker 1: I'm looking down at your shoes now to make sure
- 23:19Speaker 1: he can. Now.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Yeah, well up the debate. Uh these uh, these these
- 23:25Speaker 2: what do they call him scratchers?
- 23:27Speaker 1: What do they call him sketchers?
- 23:28Speaker 2: Sketchers? Yeah, I probably got to get some of those.
- 23:30Speaker 2: I probably probably should have had them when I was
- 23:32Speaker 2: twenty two. But you can tell Burton seems to be
- 23:36Speaker 2: you know, he's he's caught everything thrown at him, so
- 23:39Speaker 2: you don't see him screwing up an assignment, you know.
- 23:41Speaker 2: So I think that, I mean, if he's if he's
- 23:44Speaker 2: the guy they thought he was when I draft him,
- 23:46Speaker 2: I mean, you know, they're gonna have to have they're
- 23:48Speaker 2: gonna have to pass a rule at the next meeting
- 23:50Speaker 2: about being able to use three footballs.
- 23:54Speaker 1: And as as exciting as the prospect is of him
- 23:59Speaker 1: being you know that the player with first round talent.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Putting it all together, it kind of makes people forget
- 24:05Speaker 1: about Yosi Vash how good he is and what he's
- 24:08Speaker 1: going to contribute to the team this year.
- 24:10Speaker 2: I mean, he he's he looks as good as he
- 24:13Speaker 2: did as he looked. I mean, I think he bulked up,
- 24:17Speaker 2: he bulked up in the spring, and he still looks
- 24:20Speaker 2: he still looks good. I mean, it's just a matter
- 24:23Speaker 2: of and And we talked about this and he said, look,
- 24:26Speaker 2: I'm not going to get I'm not going to.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Get the opportunities.
- 24:28Speaker 2: I'm not going to get you know, Jamais, Jamais here,
- 24:32Speaker 2: Teas here, Mike Kiseki's here. I'm not going to get
- 24:35Speaker 2: the opportunities. But when I get them, I have to catch,
- 24:39Speaker 2: you know, I have to. I got to be reliable.
- 24:41Speaker 1: And I think that's what.
- 24:42Speaker 2: He's focusing on, is just doing the right things and
- 24:45Speaker 2: being the guy who you know that Joe can always
- 24:49Speaker 2: turn to, which I think, you know, that's kind of
- 24:52Speaker 2: was Koseki last year, but I think Andre kind of
- 24:54Speaker 2: took that role. So, you know, here's the guy you
- 24:56Speaker 2: get the two playmakers. But if you get in a
- 24:58Speaker 2: jam and you need a play you know, I think
- 25:01Speaker 2: Yoshi has kind of grown into that and now he's
- 25:03Speaker 2: gonna have I was kidding with him, I said, you know,
- 25:05Speaker 2: fifty catches, and then we started thinking, well, you know,
- 25:09Speaker 2: that's a lot. I mean, Jamais coming off one hundred
- 25:11Speaker 2: and twenty seven. You know, he was hurting, still.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Caught a lot of balls.
- 25:15Speaker 2: He's gonna play seventeen games. So I think it's just
- 25:18Speaker 2: a matter of you know, Joe Burrow says it, everybody's
- 25:22Speaker 2: gonna have their game, and it certainly looks like Yoshi is.
- 25:27Speaker 2: Looks like he's got a few of them.
- 25:29Speaker 1: What's the biggest position battle?
- 25:32Speaker 2: That's a great question. I think I think Dax Sill's
- 25:34Speaker 2: your slock guy once he gets back from his ACL
- 25:37Speaker 2: and they really today he was his first shot in team.
- 25:41Speaker 2: A couple of snaps they've been, but they really been
- 25:44Speaker 2: kind of taking it ease with him. But I think
- 25:46Speaker 2: I think he's I don't think there's a battle there.
- 25:48Speaker 2: I think I think Hills your slot guy. You know,
- 25:51Speaker 2: it's it's got to be the right guy. See that's
- 25:54Speaker 2: a that's a really good battle with Cody Ford and
- 25:56Speaker 2: uh Lucas Patrick, two good veterans. Patrick is wasn't practicing.
- 26:02Speaker 1: It looks like I think nothing serious.
- 26:04Speaker 2: I'm told yeah, that's what Zach said a couple of days.
- 26:07Speaker 2: But you know, he's a great veteran who started a
- 26:09Speaker 2: fifty eight games in this decade for three different teams,
- 26:12Speaker 2: started opening day for three different teams, been around, knows
- 26:15Speaker 2: the game. Same thing with Cody. Cody saved it butt
- 26:18Speaker 2: last year. Uh not at right, gad, but it everywhere else.
- 26:22Speaker 2: And uh, you know, so he's proven to be a
- 26:24Speaker 2: formal guy. So that's a really that's a really big
- 26:26Speaker 2: that's a really big battle to watch.
- 26:28Speaker 1: So let's get back to tax Hill for a moment.
- 26:31Speaker 1: They're obviously working him back in slowly. He was cleared
- 26:34Speaker 1: for the start of training camp, but coming off in ACL,
- 26:36Speaker 1: he's not, you know, running out there on every single
- 26:38Speaker 1: eleven on eleven snap, seven on seven. It's lined up
- 26:42Speaker 1: a few times in the slot, took part in some
- 26:44Speaker 1: eleven on eleven stuff today. Do you think that that
- 26:48Speaker 1: decision has been made that he is going to be
- 26:52Speaker 1: the starting slot corner or is there still a world
- 26:55Speaker 1: where fake Newton ultimately is that guy and Dax started
- 27:00Speaker 1: on the outside where he played so well last year.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Boy, you know it sure looks like he's the slot
- 27:04Speaker 2: guy because like anytime they've had him.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Out there, but it's been so few snaps, right right, right.
- 27:09Speaker 2: But that's where he's been, you know, So I mean
- 27:12Speaker 2: Figures lined up on a slot a lot. I mean
- 27:15Speaker 2: he's getting a lot of those the snaps that Dax
- 27:18Speaker 2: doesn't get. Fig gets, and uh so, you know, you're
- 27:23Speaker 2: you're right, it is haired to see it. But I
- 27:24Speaker 2: don't think they had made a decision. I mean I
- 27:26Speaker 2: think they I mean, to me, Dax is a slot
- 27:28Speaker 2: guy because that's where they've put him. And I think
- 27:31Speaker 2: but I think they feel pretty comfortable with fig And
- 27:34Speaker 2: which is big because remember this is you know, Mike
- 27:37Speaker 2: Hilton just signed to Miami yesterday, so you got to
- 27:40Speaker 2: remember what he did for this team for four years.
- 27:42Speaker 2: So the fact that they've got two guys that really
- 27:44Speaker 2: feel comfortable and we haven't even talked about Jayalen Davis,
- 27:47Speaker 2: who you know, has always been here, hasn't played a
- 27:50Speaker 2: hell of a lot, but he's but he's always here
- 27:52Speaker 2: in the practice squadad or you know, he looks he's
- 27:54Speaker 2: looks like he's having a good camp again today. So
- 27:56Speaker 2: to me, the one thing about this This thing that
- 27:58Speaker 2: we're seeing is the depth, the depth of cornerback. I mean,
- 28:02Speaker 2: that's the hell of the corner room.
- 28:04Speaker 1: It's a hell of a corner room. Dj Ivy got
- 28:07Speaker 1: a bunch of snaps with the ones today because Cam
- 28:10Speaker 1: wasn't doing as much. And he looks like a guy
- 28:12Speaker 1: that if pressed into service, wouldn't kill you.
- 28:15Speaker 2: And he has. He was pressed into service last year.
- 28:17Speaker 2: I mean he was covering some he and uh uh
- 28:22Speaker 2: he and Marco uh, Marco Wilson were taking a lot
- 28:25Speaker 2: of Keith snaps last year during that five game winning streak.
- 28:28Speaker 1: And Ivyes, he's rangy.
- 28:30Speaker 2: You know, he can run, he's got the he's got
- 28:32Speaker 2: the long arms. I mean, uh, you know, like I said,
- 28:36Speaker 2: they're there. You know, it could be hard to cut
- 28:39Speaker 2: that room, but they've got And like I said, that's
- 28:41Speaker 2: something to be said about Chuck because he's developed every
- 28:43Speaker 2: one of those guys. I remember, he's told me one
- 28:45Speaker 2: of these he goes. I've watched at least three times
- 28:49Speaker 2: all these guys walk on the field, you know, whatever
- 28:51Speaker 2: they've done. So I think he's got this is again continuity.
- 28:55Speaker 2: And I think Al feels comfortable too. I think with
- 28:59Speaker 2: him and Joy in Kovacs because we haven't even talked
- 29:02Speaker 2: about the safeties yet. Probably the most bellagued unit, probably
- 29:06Speaker 2: the most criticized unit of last year, and they didn't
- 29:08Speaker 2: make a change, which is that was the surprising to
- 29:11Speaker 2: me about the offseason was no moves is safety, no
- 29:15Speaker 2: veteran safety. But I think and we've seen why, you know,
- 29:20Speaker 2: we've seen why al likes Gino. Smart guy can Blitz
- 29:26Speaker 2: has obviously enough ball skills. He led the AFC in
- 29:29Speaker 2: interceptions once battle. We know he's part in the pun
- 29:33Speaker 2: battle tested all but sixty games at Alabama. That's why
- 29:36Speaker 2: they're drafted him. So and I think they've played. I
- 29:39Speaker 2: think they've played pretty well. But to me, it shows
- 29:42Speaker 2: the continuity. You've changed the defense with Golden, but yet
- 29:46Speaker 2: to have Kovacs and Burkes the same position, coaches, guys
- 29:50Speaker 2: who Kovacs as a guy who is Golden's assistant linebackers
- 29:55Speaker 2: coach when he was here, when Gal was here the
- 29:58Speaker 2: first time. So that the kind of stuff to the
- 30:01Speaker 2: kind of continuity that that winning programs have.
- 30:06Speaker 1: I asked you for a pleasant surprise and I didn't
- 30:09Speaker 1: give one, but you just talked about him. It's been
- 30:11Speaker 1: Geno Stone to me, Uh, he wasn't very good last
- 30:15Speaker 1: year they cut his contract, but he's been good in
- 30:20Speaker 1: camp so far. There's been a pass break up every day.
- 30:23Speaker 1: There was the perfectly timed blitz that got so much
- 30:26Speaker 1: attention at the first practice. I'm I'm encouraged by what
- 30:30Speaker 1: I've seen so far from Geno Stone. I think this
- 30:33Speaker 1: version of him is why they signed him prior to
- 30:35Speaker 1: last year.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Yeah, right, smart guy, get you lined up? Uh and
- 30:40Speaker 2: I and and also too. Uh, I guess we'll you know,
- 30:44Speaker 2: the minute the pads come on. You know, he's gonna
- 30:46Speaker 2: have to tackle. I mean, he he's talked about that
- 30:48Speaker 2: openly that he didn't have the kind you know, he
- 30:50Speaker 2: missed a lot of tackles last year. Can't do that
- 30:53Speaker 2: and uh so I I think that, Uh yeah, I mean,
- 30:56Speaker 2: first four days, guys that they need veterans. They need
- 31:01Speaker 2: the two veterans that they needed to step up and
- 31:03Speaker 2: play Moneymack and Stone have they have. They have stepped up.
- 31:09Speaker 1: So the Shamar Stewart drama is over. Signed on the
- 31:13Speaker 1: dotted line yesterday, practiced for the first time today. He
- 31:17Speaker 1: missed three days of training camp. He was in the
- 31:19Speaker 1: meetings but wasn't on the field. During the OTAs and
- 31:22Speaker 1: the mini camps prior to training camp. In the end,
- 31:27Speaker 1: how significant was what he missed?
- 31:30Speaker 2: I'm sure this is why Carrie Hobson is listening in
- 31:32Speaker 2: with THEO and Freddie Shamara's lot I get, got a
- 31:39Speaker 2: lot of ink, got a lot of attention. I think
- 31:42Speaker 2: what people forgot was that most athletic defensive linemen in
- 31:46Speaker 2: the draft in the last forty years or so, and
- 31:50Speaker 2: now they've got a chance.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Well you better include Miles Garrett in that sentence, or
- 31:54Speaker 1: give me just the Bengals.
- 31:55Speaker 2: I'm talking about relative athletic score that is comput.
- 32:01Speaker 1: God knows who computes that. I'd be the math bomb.
- 32:04Speaker 1: He's been on my podcast before.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Okay, well ask him where he had, Ask him where.
- 32:08Speaker 1: He had he had a perfect score. Now Schamar did
- 32:12Speaker 1: not take part in one or two of the things
- 32:15Speaker 1: that they test for, and that helped apparently have the
- 32:19Speaker 1: perfect store. But bottom line is, if there are if
- 32:22Speaker 1: there's another guy as athletic or you know a handful
- 32:26Speaker 1: of guys, that's it. He's among the most athletic defensive
- 32:29Speaker 1: lineman ever coming to the league.
- 32:31Speaker 2: So now now he's got to get I mean, now
- 32:33Speaker 2: we'll find out, what does springball mean? I mean, who
- 32:36Speaker 2: knows Shamar could come out and prove that springball means
- 32:39Speaker 2: absolutely nothing. It means something, obviously, But I think he
- 32:42Speaker 2: said it best.
- 32:43Speaker 7: Uh.
- 32:44Speaker 2: I guess when I talked to him after he signed,
- 32:45Speaker 2: and he said, you know, yeah, I have him been
- 32:48Speaker 2: on the field, but I believe in my physicality.
- 32:52Speaker 1: I believe in I believe my ability.
- 32:55Speaker 2: And he goes, I've got the I've been looking at
- 32:56Speaker 2: the plays, I've had the playbook, I've sat in the meetings.
- 32:59Speaker 1: You know, I think that helped.
- 33:00Speaker 2: So we're not talking about a guy that you know
- 33:03Speaker 2: wasn't here, right, you know, So and I you know,
- 33:05Speaker 2: he's been talking to these guys, he's been you know,
- 33:07Speaker 2: McKinley Jackson's one of his best friends, Mims. He's been
- 33:11Speaker 2: talking with Mims for day, text and everything, and so
- 33:15Speaker 2: it's not like he was gone. So I just don't
- 33:17Speaker 2: think and any you know, Jerry Montgomery is a veteran
- 33:20Speaker 2: defensive line coach who's been around. So I just don't
- 33:24Speaker 2: think this is you know, I just don't see anybody
- 33:27Speaker 2: getting overheated about the situation. You know, I think, yeah,
- 33:30Speaker 2: you know, I think you know, we haven't had a
- 33:33Speaker 2: what rookie holdout and maybe you know, fifteen years or something.
- 33:36Speaker 2: So I think that's part of it, you know, that's
- 33:39Speaker 2: part of it is Wow, we haven't had you know.
- 33:41Speaker 2: I try to tell people, you know, thirty years ago,
- 33:43Speaker 2: this was a daily you know, this was a daily
- 33:45Speaker 2: thing in training camp, you know, and it was other
- 33:48Speaker 2: side throwing bombs and he said, you know, they would
- 33:50Speaker 2: make this look.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Like a tea party.
- 33:51Speaker 2: So I just don't think it's a I think it's
- 33:54Speaker 2: a They get him for the fourth practice he's been here,
- 33:58Speaker 2: and I think that's pretty I think they I think
- 33:59Speaker 2: they're pretty happy that they've got you know, like Zach said,
- 34:03Speaker 2: no question, get him ready for the opener.
- 34:06Speaker 1: My feeling is it essentially got done in the nick
- 34:08Speaker 1: of time. The pads go on tomorrow, so he has
- 34:11Speaker 1: not missed a padded practice yet. He's in tip top shape.
- 34:15Speaker 1: As you said, he was in on virtually all of
- 34:17Speaker 1: the meetings during the you know, the spring schedule until
- 34:20Speaker 1: the very last day of the mandatory mini camp, so
- 34:23Speaker 1: he's been around the team. He's one of the guys.
- 34:26Speaker 1: He's been in the playbook. Now it's going out in
- 34:29Speaker 1: the field and preparing physically, and again he hasn't missed
- 34:33Speaker 1: a padded practice. So had it extended into next week,
- 34:37Speaker 1: I think it would have been significant. But I really
- 34:40Speaker 1: feel like they got it done in the nick of time. Yeah,
- 34:43Speaker 1: I mean I think that.
- 34:45Speaker 2: You know, he said it best when he said, you know,
- 34:47Speaker 2: there's a difference, man, this is the National Football League.
- 34:50Speaker 2: And he said, when hen Orlando Brown Junior put hands
- 34:53Speaker 2: on him, you know, you know wow. And when amarusmim
- 34:56Speaker 2: has put hands on him at right tackle, he said,
- 34:58Speaker 2: it was like, you know, two bricks on his chest.
- 35:01Speaker 7: You know.
- 35:01Speaker 2: So he needs the time. He knows he needs the time.
- 35:03Speaker 2: These guys know he needs the time. I mean I
- 35:06Speaker 2: think that, you know, plus two what kind of and
- 35:11Speaker 2: you probably felt this too hoardy? This this is we're
- 35:13Speaker 2: kind of on fast forward here, not only because Zach
- 35:16Speaker 2: wants to get off to a good start and he's
- 35:19Speaker 2: really pounded that. But you know, they play next week,
- 35:21Speaker 2: they play August seventh, they play Thursday. This team's on
- 35:25Speaker 2: the road Wednesday.
- 35:26Speaker 1: August sixth, you know, I mean ten days.
- 35:29Speaker 2: Yeah, so they get out of the I mean, they
- 35:30Speaker 2: get out of this this thing. They got. Everybody's on
- 35:33Speaker 2: fast forward. So I think that was I think that's
- 35:37Speaker 2: a lot of the mindset too. This team is, you know,
- 35:40Speaker 2: this team is rapidly looking ahead to September seventh.
- 35:43Speaker 1: One big contract issue down, one to go with Trey Hendrickson.
- 35:47Speaker 1: It was interesting at the pre training camp luncheon that
- 35:50Speaker 1: the Bengals hold every year, they so called Mock Turtle
- 35:53Speaker 1: Soup Luncheon, Mike Brown it publicly expressed confidence that he
- 35:57Speaker 1: felt that it was going to get done. Mike usually
- 36:00Speaker 1: doesn't say things like that unless he has a real
- 36:02Speaker 1: conviction that it is. So, what is your optimism level
- 36:06Speaker 1: right now that that Trey's going to sign?
- 36:07Speaker 2: Well, like I said, I think they've always been talking,
- 36:10Speaker 2: you know, I don't think they've ever not talked. I
- 36:12Speaker 2: know they've got you know, I think probably a couple
- 36:13Speaker 2: of people are talking to Tree, you know. So I
- 36:16Speaker 2: don't think there's a there's not there's not been an
- 36:19Speaker 2: iron curtain falling down, which is the big thing. And uh,
- 36:23Speaker 2: you know, I think, like you said, you know, it's
- 36:25Speaker 2: it sounded to me like they were when Mike walked across, Uh,
- 36:30Speaker 2: when Mike walked across the hall to go to the luncheon,
- 36:32Speaker 2: that they had something almost done. And then I think
- 36:35Speaker 2: maybe when he got back to the office, who knows, Yeah,
- 36:37Speaker 2: maybe something changed that happens in this stuff. So I mean,
- 36:41Speaker 2: you know, if Mike Brown's optimistic, I'm going to be optimistic.
- 36:44Speaker 2: I mean, you know, these guys are this is what
- 36:46Speaker 2: these guys do. They do deals, they did Shamar. I
- 36:49Speaker 2: have no doubt they're talking to the county, why they're
- 36:51Speaker 2: getting the Shama done, and why they're also talking to
- 36:54Speaker 2: Harold Lewis Drey's agent. They're also getting stuff done with
- 36:56Speaker 2: the county. So it's a you know, there's always close
- 37:00Speaker 2: store meetings around here, so I mean there's always stuff
- 37:04Speaker 2: gets stuff gets done that you don't see in the headlines.
- 37:08Speaker 1: When I heard Mike say what he said on Monday,
- 37:11Speaker 1: I came away with the feeling that, like the big
- 37:14Speaker 1: picture numbers are either done or close. And now, whether
- 37:20Speaker 1: it's signing bonus or you know, percentage upfront or whatever
- 37:24Speaker 1: it might be, those are the things that have to
- 37:26Speaker 1: be resolved. But for Mike to be that optimistic, like
- 37:29Speaker 1: the big numbers, I feel like that part is probably
- 37:33Speaker 1: either done or close.
- 37:34Speaker 2: I mean, those small things get bigger as you get
- 37:38Speaker 2: closer to the season. So what seems like maybe a
- 37:40Speaker 2: small item to either side may not as you get closer,
- 37:45Speaker 2: as you draw closer to getting this thing off. But
- 37:49Speaker 2: it's uh, you know, we're like I said, they're optimistic
- 37:53Speaker 2: and they're talking beyond that. I'm not sure what else
- 37:56Speaker 2: you can say, just like I say, so you know,
- 37:58Speaker 2: you have to feel.
- 37:59Speaker 1: Good that talking. So when I asked you off the
- 38:02Speaker 1: top for your number one takeaway, you started with morning practices.
- 38:06Speaker 1: They practice at ten am. They have a walk through
- 38:08Speaker 1: at the end of the day before everybody goes home.
- 38:11Speaker 1: Is that making a difference? Guys like it? But do
- 38:14Speaker 1: you think it's making a difference.
- 38:15Speaker 2: We won't know until they won't know until Wap's doing
- 38:19Speaker 2: the radio show at in Cleveland on September seventh, and then, oh,
- 38:24Speaker 2: it was a stroke of genius because they won thirty
- 38:26Speaker 2: one to three. But the fact they like it, I
- 38:29Speaker 2: think is proof that you know, probably they did the
- 38:32Speaker 2: right thing. I mean from I mean, you know, back
- 38:36Speaker 2: in the day, you would do it just so to
- 38:37Speaker 2: get out of the heat. But nowadays, because of nutrition,
- 38:40Speaker 2: how these guys heat. I mean, these guys probably they
- 38:44Speaker 2: do just as much stuff warming up and warming down.
- 38:48Speaker 2: Then they do actually out in the field. So I mean,
- 38:50Speaker 2: you know, Jim and I was talking about how it's
- 38:52Speaker 2: good morning's great, got two hours to himself, but he's
- 38:55Speaker 2: also you know, doing other stuff in the gym, and
- 38:57Speaker 2: then he's getting something to eat, and it just seems,
- 39:01Speaker 2: you know, Gasecki was talking about that he's gives him
- 39:03Speaker 2: more time to do his own thing, you know. So
- 39:07Speaker 2: you know that's and you know, I was sold when
- 39:09Speaker 2: Burrow said I'm a morning guy. Okay, I mean, come on,
- 39:14Speaker 2: that's that's I think that's that's proof.
- 39:16Speaker 1: It's uh, it's working well. To use your phrase, I
- 39:21Speaker 1: imagine you have some tapping to do. That's how you
- 39:25Speaker 1: describe writing your stories, so I will let you tap.
- 39:29Speaker 1: I appreciate the time as always.
- 39:31Speaker 2: It's great to talk to Hordy. I think I've been
- 39:35Speaker 2: able to hear the two best voices I've heard in
- 39:38Speaker 2: a long time, Philip Bailey of Earth Wind and Fire
- 39:41Speaker 2: and Dan Horde, and both both get better.
- 39:44Speaker 1: As the age. I will not start singing reasons right
- 39:49Speaker 1: now because it hurts my ribcage to try to hit
- 39:51Speaker 1: the high notes. Appreciate the kind words. See you tomorrow,
- 39:55Speaker 1: Thanks Fordy.
- 39:55Speaker 2: We'll do it again.
