0:00
Chapter thirteen, how my shore adventure began. The appearance of the island when
0:07
I came on deck next morning, was altogether changed. Although the breeze had
0:12
now utterly ceased. We had made a great deal of whey during the night,
0:17
and were now lying becalmed about half a mile to the southeast of the
0:21
low eastern coast. Gray colored woods covered a large part of the surface.
0:27
This even tint was indeed broken up by streaks of yellow sand break in the
0:32
lower lands, and by many tall trees of the pine family, out topping
0:37
the others, some singly, some in clumps, but the general coloring was
0:43
uniform and sad. The hills ran up clear above the vegetation in spires of
0:49
naked rock. All were strangely shaped, and the spy glass, which was
0:56
by three or four hundred feet the tallest on the island, was likewise the
1:00
strangest in configuration, running up sheer from almost every side, and then suddenly
1:06
cut off at the top like a pedestal to put a statue on the Hispaniola
1:11
was rolling scuppers under in the ocean's swell. The booms were tearing at the
1:17
blocks, the rudder was banging to and fro, and the whole ship creaking,
1:22
groaning and jumping like a manufactory. I had to cling tight to the
1:27
back stay, and the world turned giddily before my eyes. For though I
1:33
was a good enough sailor when there was way on this, standing still and
1:37
being rolled about like a bottle was a thing. I never learned to stand
1:41
without a qualm or two, above all in the morning, on an empty
1:46
stomach. Perhaps it was this. Perhaps it was the look of the island,
1:51
with its gray, melancholy woods and wild stone spires, and the surf
1:57
that we could both see and hear foaming and thundering on the steep beach at
2:01
least, although the sun shone bright and hot, and the shore birds were
2:06
fishing and crying all around us, and you would have thought anyone would have
2:09
been glad to get to land after being so long at sea. My heart
2:15
sank as the saying is into my boots, and from that first look onward
2:21
I hated the very thought of Treasure Island. We had a dreary morning's work
2:27
before us, and there was no sign of any wind, and the boats
2:30
had to be got out and manned, and the ship warped three or four
2:35
miles round the corner of the island and up the narrow passage to the haven
2:39
behind Skeleton Island. I volunteered for one of the boats, where I had,
2:45
of course no business. The heat was sweltering, and the men grumbled
2:50
fiercely over their work. Anderson was in command of my boat, and instead
2:54
of keeping the crew in order, he grumbled as loud as the worst.
3:00
Well, he said, with an oath, it's not forever. I thought
3:05
this was a very bad sign, for up to that day the men had
3:08
gone briskly and willingly about their business. But the very sight of the island
3:14
had relaxed the cords of discipline all the way in long. John stood by
3:19
the steersman and conned the ship. He knew the passage like the palm of
3:23
his hand, and though the man in the chains got everywhere more water than
3:28
was down on the chart, John never hesitated once. There's a strong score
3:35
with the EBB, he said, and this ere passage has been dug out
3:39
in a manner of speaking with a spade. We brought up just where the
3:46
anchor was on the chart, about a third of a mile from each shore,
3:50
the mainland on one side and Skeleton island on the other the bottom was
3:54
clean sand. The plunge of our anchor sent up klowd of birds, wheeling
4:00
and crying over the woods, but in less than a minute they were down
4:04
again, and all was once more silent. The place was entirely land locked,
4:11
buried in woods, the trees coming right down to high water mark,
4:15
the shores mostly flat, and the hilltops standing round at a distance in a
4:19
sort of amphitheater. One here, one there. Two little rivers, or
4:26
rather two swamps, emptied out into this pond, as you might call it,
4:30
and the foliage around that part of the shore had a kind of poisonous
4:34
brightness. From the ship, we could see nothing of the house or stockade,
4:40
for they were quite buried among trees. And if it had not been
4:44
for the chart on the companion, we might have been the first that ever
4:47
anchored there. Since the islands arose out of the seas. There was not
4:53
a breath of air moving, nor a sound, but that of the surf
4:57
booming half a mile away along the beach and against the rocks outside. A
5:02
peculiar, stagnant smell hung over the anchorage, a smell of sodden leaves and
5:10
rotting tree trunks. I observed the doctor sniffing and sniffing, like someone tasting
5:16
a bad egg. I don't know about treasure, he said, but I'll
5:21
stick my wig. There's fever here. If the conduct of the men had
5:26
been alarming in the boat, it became truly threatening when they had come aboard.
5:30
They lay about the deck, growling together in talk. The slightest order
5:36
was received with a black look, and grudgingly and carelessly obeyed. Even the
5:43
honest hands must have caught the infection, for there was not one man aboard
5:46
to mend another mutiny. It was plain hung over us like a thundercloud.
5:54
And it was not only we of the cabin party who perceived the danger.
5:58
Long John was hard at work, going from group to group, spending himself
6:02
in good advice and and as for example, no man could have shown a
6:08
better He fairly outstripped himself in willingness and civility. He was all smiles to
6:15
everyone. If an order were given, John would be on his crutch in
6:18
an instant, with the cheeriest aye aye sir in the world. And when
6:25
there was nothing else to do, he kept up one song after another,
6:30
as if to conceal the discontent of the rest. Of all the gloomy features
6:34
of that gloomy afternoon, this obvious anxiety on the part of Long John appeared
6:41
the worst. We held a council in the cabin, Sir, said the
6:46
captain. If I risk another order, the whole ship will come about our
6:53
ears by the run. You see, sir, here it is. I
6:58
get a rough answer. Do not well? If I speak back, pikes
7:03
will be going in two shakes. If I don't, Silver will see there's
7:09
something under that. And the game's up. Now we've only one man to
7:15
rely on. And who's that, asked the squire Silver, Sir, returned
7:21
the captain. He's as anxious as you and I to some other things up.
7:29
This is a tiff. He'd soon talk him out of it if he
7:32
had the chance. And what I propose to do is to give him the
7:38
chance. Let's allow the men an afternoon. Sure. If they all go,
7:45
why we'll fight the ship. If they none of them go, well
7:49
then we hold the cabin and God defend the right. If some go,
7:57
you mark my words, Sir, Silver, bring em aboard again as mild
8:01
as lambs. It was so decided loaded pistols were served out to all the
8:07
shore men. Hunter Joyce and Redruth were taken into our confidence and received the
8:13
news with no less surprise and a better spirit than we had looked for.
8:18
And then the captain went on deck and addressed the crew. My lads,
8:24
said he, We've had a hot day and are all tired and out of
8:28
sorts. A turn ashore will hurt nobody. The boats are still in the
8:33
water. You can take the gigs and as many as please can go ashore
8:39
for the afternoon. I'll fire a gun half an hour before sundown. I
8:46
believe the silly fellows must have thought that they would break their shins over treasure
8:50
as soon as they were landed, for they all came out of their salts
8:54
in a moment and gave a cheer that started the echo in a far away
8:58
hill and sent the birds once more flying and squalling round the anchorage. The
9:05
captain was too bright to be in the way. He whipped out of sight
9:09
in a moment, leaving Silver to arrange the party. And I fancy it
9:13
was as well he did so. Had he been on deck, he could
9:16
no longer so much as have pretended not to understand the situation. It was
9:22
as plain as day Silver was the captain and a mighty rebellious crew. He
9:28
had of it the honest hands, and I was soon to see it proved
9:33
that there were such on board must have been very stupid fellows. Or rather,
9:39
I suppose the truth was this, that all hands were disaffected by the
9:43
example of the ringleaders. Only some more, some less, and a few,
9:48
being good fellows in the main, could neither be led nor driven any
9:52
farther. It is one thing to be idle and skulk, and quite another
9:58
to take a ship and murder number of innocent men. At last, however,
10:01
the party was made up. Six fellows were to stay on board,
10:05
and the remaining thirteen, including Silver, began to embark. Then it was
10:11
that there came into my head the first of the mad notions that contributed so
10:16
much to save our lives. If six men were left by Silver, it
10:20
was plain our party could not take and fight the ship. And since only
10:26
six were left, it was equally plain that the cabin party had no present
10:30
need of my assistance. It occurred to me at once to go ashore.
10:35
In a jiffy. I had slipped over the side and curled up in the
10:39
four sheets of the nearest boat, and almost at the same moment she shoved
10:43
off. No one took notice of me, only the bow or saying is
10:48
that you, Jim, keep your head down. But Silver from the other
10:54
boat looked sharply over and called out to know if that were me, And
10:58
from that moment I began to regret what I had done. The crews raced
11:03
for the beach, and in the boat I was in, having some start
11:07
and being at once the lighter and the better manned, shot far ahead of
11:11
her consort, and the bough had struck among the shore side trees, and
11:16
I had caught a branch and swung myself out and plunged into the nearest thicket,
11:20
while Silver and the rest were still a hundred yards away. Jim,
11:26
Jim, I heard him shouting, but you may suppose I paid no heed.
11:31
Jumping, ducking, and breaking through, I ran straight before my nose
11:37
till I could run no longer. End of Chapter thirteen, Chapter fourteen,
11:46
the first blow. I was so pleased at having given the slip to long
11:50
John that I began to enjoy myself and look around me with some interest on
11:56
the strange land that I was in I had crossed a marshy tree full of
12:01
willows, bulrushes, and odd outlandish swampy trees, and now had come out
12:05
upon the skirts of an open piece of undulating sandy country about a mile long,
12:11
dotted with a few pines, and a great number of contorted trees,
12:16
not unlike the oak in growth, but pale in the foliage like willows.
12:22
On the far side of the open stood one of the hills, with two
12:26
quaint, craggy peaks shining vividly in the sun. I now felt for the
12:31
first time the joy of exploration. The isle was uninhabited, but my shipmates
12:37
I have left behind, and nothing lived in front of me but dumb brutes
12:41
and fowls. I turned hither and thither among the trees. Here and there
12:46
were flowering plants unknown to me. Here and there I saw snakes, And
12:50
one raised his head from a ledge of rock and hissed at me with a
12:54
noise not unlike the spinning of a top. Little did I suppose that he
12:58
was a dead enemy, and the noise was the famous rattle. Then I
13:03
came to a long thicket of these oak like trees, live or evergreen oaks.
13:09
I heard afterward they should be called, which grew low along the sand
13:13
like brambles. The boughs curiously twisted, the foliage compact like thatch. The
13:20
thickets stretched down from the top of one of the sandy knolls, spreading and
13:26
growing taller as it went, until it reached the margin of the broad,
13:30
reedy fen, through which the nearest of the little rivers soaked its way into
13:33
the anchorage. The marsh was streaming in the strong sun, and the outline
13:39
of the spyglass trembled through the haze. All at once there began to go
13:43
a sort of bustle among the bulrushes. A wild duck flew up with a
13:48
quack. Another followed, and soon over the whole surface of the marsh,
13:54
a great cloud of birds hung, screaming and circling in the air. I
13:58
judged at once that some of my shipmates must be drawing near along the borders
14:03
of the fen. Nor was I deceived, for soon I heard the very
14:07
distant and low tones of a human voice, which, as I continued to
14:11
give ear, grew steadily louder and nearer. This put me in great fear,
14:16
and I crawled under cover of the nearest live oak and squatted there,
14:20
hearkening as silent as a mouse. Another voice answered, and then the first
14:26
voice, which I now recognized to be Silver's, once more took up the
14:31
story and ran on for a long while in a stream, only now and
14:35
again interrupted by the other. By the sound, they must have been talking
14:39
earnestly and almost fiercely, but no distinct word came to my hearing. At
14:46
last, the speakers seemed to have paused, and perhaps to have sat down,
14:50
for not only did they cease to draw any nearer, but the birds
14:52
themselves began to grow more quiet and to settle again into their places in the
14:58
swamp. And began to feel that I was neglecting my business. But since
15:03
I had been so foolhardy as to come ashore with these desperadoes, the least
15:07
I could do was to overhear them at their councils, and that my plain
15:11
and obvious duty was to draw as close as I could manage. Under the
15:15
favorable ambush of the crouching trees. I could tell the direction of the speakers
15:20
pretty exactly, not only by the sound of their voices, but by the
15:24
behavior of the few birds that still hung in alarm above the heads of the
15:30
intruders, crawling on all fours, I made steadily bar slowly towards them,
15:35
till at last, raising my head to an aperture among the leaves, I
15:39
could see clear down into a little green dell beside the marsh, and closely
15:46
set about with trees, where long John Silver and another of the crew stood
15:52
face to face in conversation. The sun beat full upon them. Silver had
15:56
thrown his hat beside him on the ground, and his great smooth blonde face,
16:03
all shining with heat, was lifted to the other man's in a kind
16:07
of appeal. Mate. He was saying, that's because I thinks gold dust
16:14
of you, gold dust, and you may late that. And if I
16:18
hadn't took to you light pitch, do you think I'd have been here a
16:22
warning of you. All's up? You can't make no amend. It's the
16:29
savior neck that I must speak in. And if one of the wild uns
16:33
knew it, where it'd I be? Tom, Now tell me where it'd
16:36
I be? Silver said the other man, and I observed he was not
16:41
only red in the face, but spoke as hoarse as a crow, and
16:45
his voice shook too, like a taut rope silver, says he you're old,
16:52
and you're honest, or has the name of it, And you've money
16:56
too, which lots of poor sailors hasn't, And you're brave or are mistook?
17:02
And will you tell me you'll let yourself be led away with that kind
17:06
of a mess of swabs. Not you? As sure as God seized me,
17:11
I'd sooner lose my hand if I turn again my duty. And then
17:17
all of a sudden he was interrupted by a noise. I'd found one of
17:21
the honest hands. Well here. At that same moment came news of another
17:26
far away out in the marsh. There arose, all of a sudden a
17:30
sound like the cry of anger, then another on the back of it,
17:34
and then one horrid, long drawn scream. The rocks of the spyglass re
17:41
echoed it a score of times. The whole troop of marsh birds rose again,
17:47
darkening heaven with the simultaneous whirr, And long after that death yell was
17:52
still ringing in my brain. Silence had re established its empire, and only
17:57
the rustle of the redescending birds and the boom of the distant surges disturbed the
18:03
languor of the afternoon. Tom had leaped at the sound like a horse at
18:08
the spur, but Silver had not winked an eye. He stood where he
18:14
was, resting lightly on his crutch, watching his companion like a snake about
18:18
the spring, John said the sailor, stretching out his hand, ends off,
18:26
cried Silver, leaping back a yard, as it seemed to me with
18:30
the speed and security of a trained to gymnast. Ends off. If you
18:34
like John, Silver said the other. It's a black conscience that can make
18:38
you fear of me. But in Eaven's name, tell me what was that?
18:45
That? Returned Silver, smiling away but warier than ever, his eye
18:51
a mere pinpoint in his big face, but gleaming like a crumb of glass.
18:56
That, oh, I wreck, and that I be alln And at
19:00
this poor Tom flashed out like a hero. Allan, he cried, Then
19:06
rest your soul for a true seaman. And as for you, John Silver,
19:11
long, you've been a mate o mine, but you're a mate o
19:14
mine no longer. If I die like a dog, I'll die in my
19:18
duty. You've killed Allan. Have you kill me too if you can?
19:22
But I defies you. And with that this brave fellow turned his back directly
19:27
on the cook and set off walking for the beach. But he was not
19:32
destined to go far. With a cry, John seized the branch of a
19:37
tree, whipped the crutch out of his armpit, and sent that uncouth missile
19:41
hurling through the air. It struck poor Tom point foremost, and with stunning
19:48
violence, right between the shoulders in the middle of his back. His hands
19:52
flew up, and he gave a sort of gasp and fell. Whether he
19:56
was injured much or little, none could ever tell, like enough to judge
20:00
from the sound. His back was broken on the spot, but he had
20:04
no time given him to recover. Silver, agile as a monkey, even
20:10
without leg or crutch, was on the top of him next moment, and
20:15
had twice buried his knife up to their hilt in that defenseless body. From
20:21
my place of ambush, I could hear him pant aloud as he struck the
20:25
blows. I do not know what it rightly is to faint, but I
20:30
do know that for the next little while the whole world swam away from before
20:34
me in a whirling mist. Silver and the birds, and the tall spyglass
20:40
hilltop going round and round and topsy turvy before my eyes, and all manner
20:47
of bells ringing, and distant voices shouting in my ear. When I came
20:52
again to myself, the monster had pulled himself together, his crutch under his
20:56
arm, his hat upon his head. Just before him, Tom lay motionless
21:02
upon the sword, But the murderer minded him not a whit, cleansing his
21:06
blood stained a knife, the while upon a wisp of grass. Everything else
21:11
was unchanged, the sun still shining mercilessly upon the steaming marsh and the tall
21:18
pinnacle of the mountain. And I could scarcely persuade myself that the murder had
21:22
actually been done, and a human life cruelly cut short moment since before my
21:29
eyes. And now John put his hand into his pocket, brought out a
21:33
whistle and blew upon its several modulated blasts that rang far across the heated air.
21:40
I could not tell, of course, the meaning of the signal,
21:42
but it instantly awoke my fears more men would be coming. I might be
21:48
discovered they had already slain two of the honest people after Tom, and Allan
21:53
might not I come next. Instantly I began to extricate myself and all back
22:00
again with what speed and silence I could manage to the more open portion of
22:04
the wood. And as I did so, I could hear hails coming and
22:08
going between the old buccaneer and his comrades, and this sound of danger lent
22:14
me wings. As soon as I was clear of the thicket, I ran
22:18
as I never ran before, scarce minding the direction of my flight so long
22:22
as it led me from the murderers. And as I ran, fear grew
22:26
and grew upon me, until it turned into a kind of frenzy. Indeed,
22:32
could any one be more entirely lost than I? When the gun fired?
22:37
How should I dare to go down to the boats among those fiends still
22:44
smoking from their crime? Would not the first of them who saw me wring
22:48
my neck like a snipe's. Would not my absence itself be in evidence to
22:55
them of my alarm and therefore of my fatal knowledge. It was all over.
23:00
I thought, good bye to the Hispaniola, good bye to the squire,
23:04
the doctor, and the captain. There was nothing left for me but
23:08
death by starvation or death by the hands of the mutineers. All this while,
23:15
as I say, I was still running, and without taking any notice,
23:18
I had drawn near to the foot of the little hill with the two
23:22
peaks, and had got into a part of the island where the wild oaks
23:26
grew more widely apart, and seemed more like forest trees in their bearing and
23:30
dimensions. Mingled with these, there were a few scattered pines, some fifty
23:37
some nearer seventy feet high. The air, too, smelled more fresh than
23:41
down beside the marsh, and here a fresh alarm brought me to a standstill
23:48
with a thumping heart. End of Chapter fourteen.
