- 0:14SPEAKER_00: And they also have some pretty awesome custom team merch.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: I like to think of it as PFF meeting our lads, but with a little bit more depth.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Check them out at def dash charts dot com or deaf underscore charts on Twitter and Instagram.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: You know, we talk all sports all year long, and on this episode, we will dive into some scores from Major League Baseball over the weekend, a few soccer updates, a quick note from the UFC, and then we will get to some of the biggest talking points from the ACC and the Big 12.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: And we will also give a quick recap of my first experience at Wrigley Field before we get into our second tail the tailgate segment.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: And then we will always close our show with a gold star and a what to watch for.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Let's get to it.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: So starting in Major League Baseball, the Yankees, my Yankees, you we wouldn't have a Tailgate Cam podcast unless we talked about the Yankees beating the Red Sox.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: The Yankees take three out of four in a pivotal AL East in AL wildcard clash, including a 16.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: You heard that right.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: 16 to 1 route on Sunday, backed by two home runs by Austin Wells that occurred in the same inning.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: The Dodgers allowed just four runs in three games to take out the Tigers in two of three games in Detroit.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: The Rays and the Padres scored a whopping total of 35 runs in three games, but ultimately the Rays won every game and sweep the Padres on the road, and they continue to pace the ALEs over my Yankees.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Jackson Churio, he keeps swinging a hot bat.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: And the Brewers take two out of three from the Rangers on the road in Texas.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: An incredible series.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: I was able to be there for game one.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: My first experience at Wrigley, which again I will talk about more in just a bit.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: But the Cubs MVP candidate, Pete Crow Armstrong, hits five home runs on Saturday and Sunday.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: But ultimately, the Reds are able to manage winning two of three games on the road in Wrigley, with one of those games being Friday afternoon and Wrigley, and the other being a Sunday night baseball premiere.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: And the Reds steal the show at Wrigley Field.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: And then lastly, Michael Harris III.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Five RBIs in three games as the Braves sweep the Rockies in Atlanta.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Now let's get to some soccer notes.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: First, some top scores from around the EPL.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Munoz scored a late second half goal for Liverpool to earn a draw, and they were able to level the score 2-2 in earning a final result against Nottingham Forest.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Tottenham, they really continue to struggle to start the season.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: They got routed in their first game, and they dropped their second game 2-0 against Newcastle, led by a winning goal by Anthony Elonga.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: My Red Devils, Manchester United, they score five goals in the rain against Ipswich Town, including a hat trick from Bruno Fernandez, and win five to two to secure their first win of the season at Old Trafford.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: And Chelsea, they win their second game in their second match against Brighton Hove Albion, getting goal contributions from four different players in this game.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Chelsea remains unbeaten early on in the EPL season.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Let's get back stateside and go through a quick note from the MLS.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Robert Lewandowski scored for the Chicago Fire as they claim a late point against the Seattle Sounders, earning a 2-2 draw.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Lionel Messi scored not one, not two, not three, but four goals, quattro goals against CF Montreal as Intermiami win seven to one.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Yes, you heard that right.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: They won seven to one, backed by four goals from Lionel Messi.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Two of the top teams in the Western Conference.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: That is not true for the East as Nashville FC continues to set the pace in the East with another dominant performance, taking a 4-0 victory against FC Cincinnati.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: And then lastly, but certainly not least, St.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Louis City and FC Dallas battled back and forth amongst West contenders to get a 3-3 tie as St.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Louis extends their match unbeaten streak to 14 games.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Let's get to some quick notes from soccer around the world.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: Atletico Madrid gets two goals from Baina as they beat Sevilla 3-1.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Real Madrid gets a goal from not only Kylian Mbappe, but Jude.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Hey, Jude, as Real Madrid braces Malaga 4-0.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: And Osuna and Gatafe just needed one penalty kick to decide the difference.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: And that was all it took for Osuna to get the win one to nothing.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Dortman, Berezia Dortmund starts their season with a two to nothing win as Bundesliga kicked off over the weekend.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: And Boresia Dortmund starts their season with a two to nothing win over FC Hamburg.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Freeberg paces Warter Bremen 4-0 to start their season.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: PSG in their second match day, after having drawn their opening game, they're able to score two goals.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: Not one, but two goals in stoppage time to secure a draw to earn their second consecutive draw to start the season against Lille.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: And then AC Monaco is the only unbeaten team left in France after two match days at they after they defeated Olympique Marseille 2 to nothing.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: Now, a quick note from the UFC: while this was not the biggest card in terms of names, there were a lot of highlights, some really incredible knockouts and performances all up and down this Shanghai China card.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: But the note to take away from here, if you are a UFC fan, it is the fact that Umar Namagomedov was knocked out in the second round by Song Yadong.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: Only the third ever lost by Team Habib.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: And a really, really dramatic loss there for Umar Namagovedov.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: There are some upcoming fights that we are all looking forward to, most notably coming up on September 19th.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: That is UFC 331 taking place in Philadelphia.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: We also have 333 coming up very soon after that.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: We still have yet to get much of an announcement on the main event for 332.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: However, we do know that David San Figurito and Peyton Talbot, Johnny Walker, Marvin Torrey, amongst a few others, will be on that 332 card.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: We've still yet to see who the main event will be.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: But our next UFC fight night will be this weekend, uh Saturday, September 5th.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Dan Hooker uh versus Parnasse.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Not the most stacked card, but we're all really looking forward to that UFC 331 event, uh, Joshua Van versus Alexandra Pantoja.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: And now let's get into some ACC and Big 12 talking points.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: So starting with the ACC, Miami is an overwhelming favorite.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: They have a 51% chance, according to ESPN FPI, to repeat as the ACC champion.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, that is one of the more unheard of statistics in in modern college football.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: With talent being as spread around as it is, the fact that Miami is such an overwhelming favorite just really goes to show where the state of the ACC is.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: Uh and kind of building off that, Darien Minsa is replacing Carson Beck at Miami.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Darien Minsa, who we've talked about on this podcast already, led the ACC in passing yarns, passing touchdowns, and passing efficiency in in 2025 at Duke, now replaces Carson Beck, who is more than serviceable.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: Uh, I think he I would say he shut some haters up last year at the University of Miami, but ultimately they uh hit the upgrade button and the easy button by bringing in Darien Menta from Duke, and he is a clear, no doubt upgrade over Carson Beck, and this team should be favored in every game.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: Miami should be a team that rolls through the regular season.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: I would imagine they will, at worst, barring a major injury to somebody along their offensive line or Malachi Tony or to Menta, as I already mentioned, they will be at worst a let an 11-win regular season team.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: So this team is destined to make it back to the playoffs.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: How far they make it in the playoffs will really depend on how some of their uh other skilled players outside of Malachi Tony develop throughout the course of the season.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: And then ultimately, how does Darien Minsa play with that kind of pressure on him?
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: It's one thing to be the starting quarterback at Tulane, which he was great, or at Duke, which he was great.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: It's a whole different thing to be the starting quarterback at Miami when you are expected to go on a not only ACC title run, but a national championship title run.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: The next team that I want to talk about with the ACC is Louisville.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: They bring back head coach Jeff Braum and they bring in Ohio State transfer Luke Keenholz.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: Luke Louisville has often been a thorn in other teams' sides.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: They beat Miami on the road at Miami last year, and Jeff Braum knows how to get this team ready to play.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: I'm excited to see Louisville this year.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: I don't know that I have fully bought into the stock on Luke Keenholz, but I'm excited to see if Louisville is able to deliver some kind of um, you know, resemblance of what they were able to put on field last year and every other year that Jeff Braum has been at Louisville.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: And that's a consistent offensive juggernaut, uh a team that can really deliver um in some of the big games and that doesn't get afraid of the moment.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: So Louisville is kind of my second team that I'm paying attention to in the ACC.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: But another team that I am also very excited about is Virginia.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: They were the ACC runner-up.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: Um, them and Duke, I feel like they are both being very underrated and honestly disrespected to start this season.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: We saw Virginia um in in week zero really take care of business.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, take care of business is probably an understatement for what they did, but they really, really put the beat down on conference opponent, NC State.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: They won 34-8.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: And there were times of this game when Bo Perbula was on pace to rush for over 200 yards, while NC State was on pace to rush for less than 50.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: And that was beyond the first quarter for what it's worth.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: But Virginia and Duke, they are looking to keep pace with new quarterbacks.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: Virginia brought in Bo Perbula, who looked great in that first game against NZ State.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: And Duke, who brings in San Jose State Transfer Walter Eagett.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: I think both of those teams are well coached, um, well led, and have good foundations that they should not experience significant drop-offs.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: But speaking of drop-offs, we have to talk about FSU if we're talking about the ACC, and there has been a ton of conversation around this team.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: If you listened to the podcast last week, you know that I picked Florida State on the spread against New Mexico State.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: And that being the case, I expected Mike Norvell to light one final fire under the butt butt of his team before they took on New Mexico State.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: Surely that wasn't the case, as they were only able to win 34-17 against New Mexico State.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: But really, what I want to talk about here is the fact that Florida State, they bring in quarterback Ashton Daniels, who spent time at Auburn and at Stanford.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: They bring in Contravius Wisner from Texas, who was very happy to let Wisner leave, as they were bringing in Hollywood Smothers from NC State.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: And really, what does FSU have after that?
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: A pretty empty defense that I've seen guys leave each of the last two seasons.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: And then you have Deuce Robinson and Micah Danzi.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: I like Chroma.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: That he he can play at running back.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: But ultimately, this is a team that has misallocated their budget.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: They are a team that has misidentified talent in the transfer portal.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: And this is a team that has let head coach Mike Norvell stick around for too long.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: And I as as a Gator fan, I know firsthand what that's like.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: Because the Gators should have let Billy Napier go at the end of the 2025 or 2024 season, excuse me.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: There was no reason that Billy Napier, given the trajectory of that team, no, I do not care about a bowl game win against Tulane.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: They were not on track.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: Neither does FSU.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: And it's like FSU saw their arch rivals make a critical mistake, and he said, guess what, buddy?
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: Hand me a beer.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: I'll one up you and take the pressure off you.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: I just don't get it.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: I am very interested to see the buy-in from the team this year, the buy-in from the players, the buy-in from the other coaches, and ultimately how long Norvell is able to make it as the head coach of the Florida State Seminals.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: If he is the head coach a year from now, I will give everybody that listens to this podcast five dollars.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: And lastly, in the ACC, I have to address the fact that they enter their first season with an uneven conference schedule.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: There will be a handful of teams playing just eight conference games, just five teams, while the rest of the teams, 12 other teams, are playing nine conference games.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: So it's gonna create some weird um tie-breaking rules that they've already laid out the criteria for, but it really just creates a a pretty big mismatch when some of those teams are gonna play eight conference games and some are going to play nine.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: So it it will be really interesting if this is a one big league, one big league, like we all would anticipate, uh, or if another team is able to rise above and compete with Miami for an ACC playoff spot.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: Now over to the Big 12.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: I think the biggest story here goes to our reigning champion, and that is Texas Tech.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: They won the Big 12 in 2025.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: They brought in transfer quarterback Brennan Soresby, who is not the starting quarterback for Texas Tech today, as we record this podcast, is he was kicked out of school for um a gambling incident where it was proven that he was gambling not only on Indiana football, on Cincinnati, um, on multiple sports over across multiple seasons, and that was a violation of NCAA rules.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: He was ruled ineligible.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: He tried to apply for the NFL supplemental draft, which for those that don't know is a draft designated for people that um enter the draft process late, you know, due to um things like this, honestly, like you know, um legal matters, um, maybe you know, late transfers that weren't able to get financially enrolled or academically enrolled into their next school.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: But ultimately that was that opportunity was denied to Brendan Soresby.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: He was not allowed to enter the NFL supplemental draft, and he was forced to sit out a season while Texas Tech plays on now, not only with uh former backup Will Hammond, but now new quarterback based on this five for five rule, which is Tommy Castellanos, former FSU seminal quarterback, Tommy Castellanos.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: And it'll be really interesting to see how Texas Tech is able to really kind of roll with these punches.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: The dividing factor amongst all this is the fact that Texas Tech is without question the best team in the Big 12.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: I don't really even know how much changing the quarterback to Will Hammond mattered.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: I I I was pretty confident in picking picking Texas Tech to win the Big 12 months ago.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: I'm also really interested to see how Utah and Kansas State are able to enter this new season with new head coaches.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: Utah's head coach, Kyle Whittingham, has left the University of Utah and gone over to Michigan to replace Sharon Moore.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: He is replaced by former defensive coordinator Morgan Scally.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: And Kansas State, they move on to former Kansas State quarterback, Colin Optimus Klein.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: And I'm excited to see both.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: I trust the foundation that is laid at Utah, probably more than I do at Kansas State.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: But I think Colin Klein is a very, very good coach.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: I loved what he did with the offense at Texas AM.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: I I loved what he did as a player in his days as a player.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: I I really trust the offensive vision that Colin Klein could implement for a team like the Kansas State Wildcats.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: And ultimately, I I genuinely love one of my favorite things about college football is how much people are connected to the teams that they root for.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: And I and I genuinely love when a team is willing to bring back a guy that played for that school.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: And more often, I mean, look at Kirby Smart.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's a long list of examples, but guys that have sweat and bled for a school tend to work out pretty well.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: And I like the chances that Colin Klein is able to turn things around at Kansas State.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: Speaking of turning things around, Eric Morris, that's a guy that's gonna need to turn some things around after he comes in replacing former head coach Mike Gundy.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Eric Morris not only leaves North Texas, but takes almost all of his players with him, including his star quarterback, Drew Mestimacher, who is projected to be one of the top NFL draft prospects heading into the 2027 NFL draft.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: I will be very interested to see what kind of performance not only do we Get out of Mesta Maker this year, but out of the entire Oklahoma State team.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: Speaking of transfer quarterbacks, DJ Lagway, DJ Lagway, my former guy at the University of Florida, transfers over to Baylor, the school that his father went to, and he takes over for former quarterback Sawyer Robertson, who has graduated and uh I mean, kind of a crazy thing to say nowadays in college football, but a guy that ran out of eligibility in Sawyer Robertson, and now DJ Lagway steps in.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: So, really, what can you expect to see here from a guy like Lagway, who is all the upside in the world, can make all the throws, uh, but really was limited by injuries and progression.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: It'll be really interesting to see if David Randa can not only stay off the hot seat, but if he can turn DJ Lagway into a real guy, not only will Baylor be a contender, but DJ Lagway will turn his name and his draft stock around overnight.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: And then I also want to talk about a couple other schools.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: Can Houston continue to pace and uh, you know, really take strides with Willie Fritz?
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: And ultimately, the thing here, again, leads back to the quarterback, Connor Wegman.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: He is a fifth-year senior, a guy that's been around.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: He's been at Texas AM, he's been at Houston for a couple years.
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: This is a team that I really, really like and trust.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: I like Willie Fritz.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: I like Connor Wegman.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: I like a lot about what this team can do on offense.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: This is a team that I think will be a straight-up mismatch against most of the teams they face in the Big 12 this season.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Please pay attention to the Houston Cougars when you are looking at games every week in the Big 12, because that is a team that will clean up.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: Now, lastly, to the BYU Cougars, they bring back Kalani Satake, who almost left for the Penn State Nittany Lions, but turned it down after we found some of that money laying under the sofa from the boosters.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: Uh, I think it was the crumble cookie CEO that all of a sudden found a couple million to throw Kalani Satake's way and keep him there.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: So, hey, for those knocking NIL, NIL works two ways.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: It works for coaches and for players.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: Not only does Satake return, but he brings back his former freshman quarterback, now turned sophomore Bear Bachmeyer, and I am really excited to see what BOIU is able to do this year.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: As I mentioned at the start of the show, I was able to take in a game on a Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field, and it was an amazing experience.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: It really was.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: So my talking tailgate.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: My tailgate talk of the day relates to my experience at Wrigley Field, and it was it was amazing.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: It really was.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, it was a beautiful baseball field.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: Um, some of the architecture, the way that it's laid out within Wrigleyville, it kind of just sneaks up on you.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: Unlike a lot of stadiums I've ever been to across any sport where you can kind of see it daunting over the skyline from a few miles away.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: This, you just kind of are walking around bars and restaurants around Wrigley, and then you come across Addison or Clark Street, and there she stands.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: Wrigley Field, Troughs Galore.
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: I mean, just a really incredible experience with a lot of dedicated and loyal baseball fans.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: We were there for a Friday afternoon, a divisional game against the Cincinnati Reds, a team that the Cubs play at least 15 times every single season, and a team that this year is not very good.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: So, I mean, there was no reason why that crowd should have been sold out, and there was not an empty seat in the building.
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: It was really an amazing experience.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: Shout out to Wrigley Field, it was amazing being able to take that in on a Friday afternoon with a great group of friends, some of my best friends, and uh people that you've already heard on the podcast, like Brandon Ogden.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: Um, it was it was really an awesome experience.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: We were there for a good friend of our Tre Lessio's bachelor party, and Wrigley Field did not disappoint.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: Still to come, our second tale, the tailgate segment, followed by our gold star of the weekend and a what to watch for looking ahead at this week, and a little teaser about what's ahead.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: Stick around.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: Our second edition of the Tail the Tailgate segment this year.
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: So let's start by recapping the picks that I gave out last week, where we went three, four, and one.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: Yep, we got a push.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: So we gave out TCU versus North Carolina under 47.5 winner.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: We gave out North Carolina State plus five and a half.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: That was our probably our worst loser of the day.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: CJ Bailey and North Carolina State looked terrible.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: USC team total over 48.5, a loser.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: They really just took the brakes off in the second half, only scoring 14 points after halftime.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: So then we move on to North Dakota State first quarter money line.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: That was a push thanks to a late and the only score of the game from Jacksonville State.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: But we did salvage some money from that game.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: Eastern Michigan and North there, North Dakota State moneyline parlays cashed.
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: Hawaii dropped the cover at the very end of the game.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: We took them plus four on the spread.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: We also took Florida State minus 30 and a half, and they won 34 to 17.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: But we were salvaged on the night cap by Memphis, who not only covered the four and a half spread, but won the game outright to get us to 3-4-1 and down 1.2 units to start the season.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: So this week we have a full slate of college football games.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: So I want to get into some of the biggest games this week and give you my picks heading into week one of the college football season.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: One of the biggest games of the opening weekend is LSU versus Clemson.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: Clemson, who has been in a quarterback battle between a three-star sophomore quarterback and their redshirt senior quarterback, Chris Vasina.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: Chris Vasina won that quarterback competition.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: He will get the start on the road in Death Valley against Sam Levitt, Lane Kiffin, and these mighty LSU Tigers.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: This is a situation where these are two teams that have very different expectations for this season.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: And ultimately, this environment can only be the suitor for one team.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: Death Valley is an incredibly difficult place to play.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: I like the LSU first half minus six on the first half line.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: I don't know that I trust them at 10 and a half for the entire game, but I do like that minus six in the first half.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: I could easily see LSU going into halftime 14 to 3 or 14 to 6 at worst.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: So I will take LSU minus 6 on the first half line.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: Another game, a team that we've already talked about, Louisville on this podcast, led by new quarterback Luke Keenholz and returning head coach Jeff Braum.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: They take on new head coach at Ole Miss, replacing former and now LSU coach Lane Kiffen and Pete Golding.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: And they also return quarterback Trinidad Chambliss.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: The spread on this game, Ole Miss favorite by seven and a half.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: The over-under set at 56.5.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: On this game, though, give me the dog.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: Give me Louisville.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: I like Jeff Braum.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: I trust him to be ready.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: This is also a game where Jeff Braum, who has been in many of big games in his career, not only as a player, but as a coach, now gets to take on a coach in his first game as head coach of the Old Miss Rebels, first game as a head coach anywhere.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: And there's a lot of pressure on that guy.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: I like Old Miss to keep this thing close.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: I don't know if they win the game, but I like Louisville to keep this close with Ole Miss.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: Give me the Cardinal plus seven and a half on the spread.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: We do have a rivalry game in week one of college football.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: They said that conference realignment would kill rivalry games, but Washington State and Washington make sure that that is not the case in week one.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: The spread on this game, Washington is favored by 23 points.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 50 and a half.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: And with a game that features Caden Pickett, a transfer, and Demon Williams, a returning starter for the University of Washington, and a rivalry game in week one with new head coaches on the Washington State side.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: But really in a game where they will bring out every stop possible.
- 32:51SPEAKER_00: Kirby Moore will certainly try to exercise his offensive prowess in this game.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: I like the over in week one.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: Give me the over 50 and a half in Washington State versus Washington.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: Now let's go down the East Coast, West Virginia versus Coastal Carolina.
- 33:13SPEAKER_00: West Virginia is favored on this spread by 20, and the over-under is set at 55.5.
- 33:21SPEAKER_00: In this game, I am going to take the West Virginia Mountaineers led by new stud running back, Cam Cook.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: I'm going to take the West Virginia Mountaineers minus 21 on the spread because I think that Rich Rodriguez has too much in the bag, and Cam Cook is going to run all up and down on Coastal Carolina all day long.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: Give me West Virginia minus 21.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: Now to Friday night.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: Miami, a team that we've also talked about on this podcast, versus a team that we've already seen play this season in Stanford.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: Stanford, who will get another mention, I will tease later on this podcast.
- 34:03SPEAKER_00: They're 24.5 point underdogs.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: Excuse me.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: And the over-under is set at 47.5.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: In this situation, Stanford just played a game in week zero, a very close game where they pulled away late, and Miami is breaking out new quarterback, Darien Minsa, and they bring back Malachi Tony amongst a slew of great freshmen.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: I like Miami minus 24.5.
- 34:34SPEAKER_00: I think they lay the smack down very quickly against Stanford.
- 34:39SPEAKER_00: Give me Miami minus 24.5.
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: Now let's move to Wisconsin and Notre Dame.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: Wisconsin comes into this game as 20.5 point underdogs, and the over-under on this game is set at 47.5.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: Colton Joseph takes over at quarterback for Wisconsin, transferring in from Old Dominion, where he won the Sunbelt Player of the Year.
- 35:06SPEAKER_00: Notre Dame, on the other hand, brings back former freshman quarterback, now sophomore CJ Carr, led by head coach Marcus Freeman.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: But in this situation, I think the value sits with the Badgers.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: I like Wisconsin.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: Sneaky on the 20 and a half.
- 35:26SPEAKER_00: I think that they provide enough value here on the road, a competent team, still led by head coach Luke Fickle.
- 35:34SPEAKER_00: I think that they find a way to stick around this game before it ultimately gets out of hand late, and Notre Dame wins by multiple scores.
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: Give me the Badgers plus 20.5.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: We got two more picks.
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: Baylor and Auburn is up next.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: Auburn comes into this game, favored by 7.5, the over-under set at 58.5.
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: This is a neutral sight game set in Atlanta.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: We have two new quarterbacks in this game, one of which we talked about on this podcast, and new Baylor Bear quarterback DJ Lagway.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: The other one is Auburn Tiger transfer quarterback following his head coach Byron Brown, who we talked about on our last podcast, who followed his head coach, like I said, from USF over to Auburn.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: I think this is just the case of too many new pieces moving all at the same time, where that just leads me to take the under.
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: I know that uh head coach Alec Golish can lead a pretty potent offense.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: Dave Aranda is a defensive-minded coach.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: I don't think he has any desire for this total to get above 50 58 and a half.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: If it does, Baylor surely will lose this game.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: I do not trust Baylor or quarterback DJ Lagway on the 7.5, but what I do trust is that DJ Lagway can play in a game where the under hits.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: Give me the under 58.5 in Baylor versus Auburn.
- 37:06SPEAKER_00: Now to our last game of the weekend that we are going to give out a tail the tailgate pick for.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: That is an in-state rival.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: Cal Berkeley versus the University of California, Los Angeles.
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: And we've talked about both of these teams.
- 37:25SPEAKER_00: UCLA with new head coach Bob Chesney and returning quarterback Nico Imealeava versus Cal and their stud quarterback, Jaren Kiawe Sagapulutele.
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: I think that Jaron Kiawe Sagapulutele is one of the best quarterbacks in the country.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: I think he showed that as a freshman last year with a very poor Cal team around him.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: And now he has Ian Strong.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: He has uh Adam Muhammad at running back.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: He has real weapons around him with the Cal Bears.
- 38:03SPEAKER_00: Give me the Cal Bear money line.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: So to recap our picks for week two of the Tale the Tailgate segment, we have LSU minus six in the first half.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: We have Louisville plus seven and a half against Ole Miss.
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: The Washington, Washington State over 50.5, and the West Virginia versus Coastal Carolina minus 21 in favor of West Virginia.
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: Miami versus Stanford.
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: We took Miami minus 24.5.
- 38:41SPEAKER_00: Wisconsin versus Notre Dame.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: Give me Wisconsin plus 20.5.
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: Baylor versus Auburn.
- 38:48SPEAKER_00: We took the under 58.5.
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: And then Cal versus UCLA, we took Cal Bears money line.
- 38:56SPEAKER_00: Now to our gold star of the week, a team that we just finished talking about shortly ago.
- 39:02SPEAKER_00: Stanford.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: Their star quarterback, Davis Warren, former Michigan quarterback, uh, he delivered.
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: He, I mean, he really did.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: He delivered a comeback win.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: Stanford had to win this game against Hawaii.
- 39:18SPEAKER_00: He threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns and a comeback win against Hawaii.
- 39:24SPEAKER_00: They scored late to take the lead.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: Their defense extended that lead, taking them not only over to win the game, but they covered the game as well.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: Davis Warren, you are our gold star of the weekend.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: My what to watch for this week, we obviously have a full slate of college football ahead on Labor Day weekend.
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: But the game that I am the most excited for is a game that I just broke down, and that is the Louisville Cardinals versus the Ole Miss Fighting Rebels on Sunday afternoon.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: That is my what to watch for.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: And a click, quick what to what's ahead.
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: We will talk about MVP, Cy Young, and all of our baseball awards, plus recapping week one from college football next week.
