- 0:00Speaker 1: We should start right off because I have some ideas.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Go ahead, Johnny, Go ahead, Johnny.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Because you guys have to grind this. And I'm so
- 0:09Speaker 1: excited that some things occurred to me while I was
- 0:12Speaker 1: watching this thing.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Go ahead, Lot. I love it when you come on,
- 0:15Speaker 2: you know why, because you come prepared. You're like, you're
- 0:18Speaker 2: as prepared as Donald and I You're like, you're wound up.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Well, I am a big look going back in and
- 0:23Speaker 1: watching this, first of all, it's hard not to feel
- 0:28Speaker 1: really proud of it. Yeah, and this one I thought
- 0:32Speaker 1: deserved some backdrop because the one last Week one fifteen
- 0:35Speaker 1: is a spectacular episode. Zach. You're particularly great in that
- 0:38Speaker 1: episode with Sarah and then the monologues with the shrink,
- 0:42Speaker 1: let the whole ensemble just shine. And I busted my
- 0:46Speaker 1: ass on those monologues because the writing was astonished.
- 0:50Speaker 2: And you notice there's no cuts. I mean, we were
- 0:52Speaker 2: clearly all told that they would be wonders. Yeah, they were,
- 0:57Speaker 2: especially since Donald knew it, So we were clearly all
- 1:00Speaker 2: that there would be no cuts.
- 1:02Speaker 1: But what I thought was really interesting and maybe interesting
- 1:05Speaker 1: for people listening is a little bit of context. And
- 1:09Speaker 1: what I mean is because in this episode, it became
- 1:13Speaker 1: clear to me just how gelled the ensemble is. Whether
- 1:16Speaker 1: it's Kenny and Judy, you and me, Zachi Donald and Sarah,
- 1:21Speaker 1: the thing is just water tight. And the reason is
- 1:26Speaker 1: because I think now, as we discussed already, nine to
- 1:28Speaker 1: eleven had already occurred. We're round about the middle of
- 1:31Speaker 1: December here, and so what happened in New York, which
- 1:36Speaker 1: I'll circle this back, was the New York Yankees lost
- 1:40Speaker 1: the World Series in seven games to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
- 1:43Speaker 1: And the only reason that's relevant is because they lost.
- 1:47Speaker 1: There was no tick or tape parade in New York City,
- 1:51Speaker 1: so we were invited to the Thanksgiving Parade in New
- 1:55Speaker 1: York City, and it was the first taste of real
- 1:59Speaker 1: rock star for all of us because we worked till
- 2:01Speaker 1: Wednesday night, till about nine to twenty five, and this
- 2:05Speaker 1: was a week or two before this episode, and then
- 2:07Speaker 1: we were whisked off to Lax where we occupied the
- 2:12Speaker 1: entire front of first class.
- 2:15Speaker 3: There was only one other person. There was only one other,
- 2:17Speaker 3: that's right, and it was a boy band. It was
- 2:20Speaker 3: like uh oh Town or something like that. We shared
- 2:23Speaker 3: first class. It was the cast of Scrubs and o Town.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I remember, it might as well have been in private plane,
- 2:29Speaker 1: it wasn't. But it was first class. It wasn't coach.
- 2:31Speaker 1: It was first It wasn't business class. It was first class.
- 2:34Speaker 1: And we were going to New York to participate in
- 2:36Speaker 1: the Thanksgiving Day parade. Now, remember there had been no
- 2:40Speaker 1: mass gatherings allowed in New York since that Tuesday morning
- 2:45Speaker 1: in September. This just wasn't allowed. The Yankees were supposed
- 2:48Speaker 1: to be there, but they weren't. So we fly overnight,
- 2:51Speaker 1: and you guys can chime in, but we fly overnight,
- 2:54Speaker 1: we go, we're deposited at some chapel on the Upper
- 2:57Speaker 1: West Side somewhere.
- 2:58Speaker 3: We didn't even go to the hotel. We just they
- 3:00Speaker 3: dropped us off at the freaking parade.
- 3:03Speaker 2: We were like lying on the on the ground in
- 3:05Speaker 2: the chapel to come.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Absolutely, and we got sideways on the plane, yeah, as
- 3:14Speaker 1: you do. And and then we got up and Zachie,
- 3:19Speaker 1: I think you brought your nephew onto the float. And
- 3:23Speaker 1: it was a quasi racist kind of Pocahontas float.
- 3:28Speaker 2: And they've gotten they've gotten rid of some of those
- 3:31Speaker 2: since then, I think, Yeah.
- 3:32Speaker 1: But absolutely, here's the scrubs cast and a quasi racist
- 3:36Speaker 1: of Pocahonna's float on the upper west side in the
- 3:39Speaker 1: staging area. And who pulls up behind us but the
- 3:42Speaker 1: Wiggles in the big red car. Now, I had gone
- 3:46Speaker 1: to Wiggles concerts with my son every time they're in
- 3:50Speaker 1: Los Angeles for the last couple of years. I was eating, sleeping,
- 3:53Speaker 1: and drinking the Wiggles. So I got off the float
- 3:56Speaker 1: and I went back to the big Red car and
- 3:58Speaker 1: introduced myself to Murray and Jeff and I introduced myself
- 4:00Speaker 1: to everybody, and I became friends with the Wiggles, and
- 4:04Speaker 1: I am to this day.
- 4:06Speaker 4: You hang out with the Wiggles still not really.
- 4:08Speaker 1: But I did a video for them and they became
- 4:12Speaker 1: my friends. They're great educated.
- 4:13Speaker 2: My memory started interrupt one second, Johnny. My memory is
- 4:16Speaker 2: that my nephew was a very outspoken kid and not
- 4:21Speaker 2: shy at all. And I don't know how old he was,
- 4:23Speaker 2: but he was little.
- 4:24Speaker 4: And we had to be like nine, dude, no younger.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Or younger younger heid.
- 4:28Speaker 2: And so Al Roker we're off the flow at one
- 4:30Speaker 2: point and Al Roker's interviewing us, and he goes and
- 4:33Speaker 2: I'm here with the cast of scrubs and I've got
- 4:35Speaker 2: Johnny ce McGinley and Donald FaZe's going around introducing the
- 4:37Speaker 2: whole cast and my nephew and this is live television.
- 4:41Speaker 2: And my nephew goes, what about me? And Al Roker?
- 4:47Speaker 2: It's awkward, and Al Roker ignores him and starts so
- 4:50Speaker 2: tell us about the show. Interrupts him again, what about me?
- 4:57Speaker 2: And finally Al feels bad enough that he's like, oh,
- 5:00Speaker 2: I'm sorry, young man, you're right, and what's your name?
- 5:02Speaker 2: And then he introduces himself. But I was like, it
- 5:04Speaker 2: was my first.
- 5:05Speaker 4: And he throwing gang signs too, Like, wasn't He.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Didn't, he didn't, he didn't know any like real gang signs,
- 5:11Speaker 2: but he had seen on TV how how how rappers
- 5:14Speaker 2: and whomever throw gang signs. So we're on the float
- 5:17Speaker 2: and he's like throwing these like almost gang signs.
- 5:21Speaker 1: When I when I spoke to Al Roker after after
- 5:25Speaker 1: he cut, I said, how, how is this for a turnout?
- 5:28Speaker 1: And he said this will be the largest turnout in
- 5:31Speaker 1: the history of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. And I said, well,
- 5:33Speaker 1: give me an estimate, and he said, there'll be about
- 5:35Speaker 1: three and a half million people here, and so every
- 5:37Speaker 1: time we went through an intersection, and I'll wrap this
- 5:40Speaker 1: story up in a minute, but every time we went
- 5:41Speaker 1: down an intersection, you could see it was one hundred
- 5:45Speaker 1: to two hundred people deep at every intersection. I've never
- 5:48Speaker 1: seen that many people. I never will in my life.
- 5:51Speaker 4: Yeah, it was that was.
- 5:53Speaker 3: I remember being like, wow, there are so many people here,
- 5:56Speaker 3: and we were on the float and every You're right,
- 5:59Speaker 3: every time we passed an intersection it looked like it
- 6:02Speaker 3: went so deep into the intersection. I remember thinking, how
- 6:06Speaker 3: are all of these people? It was like sardines too,
- 6:09Speaker 3: Like they were packed together.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Because nobody had been allowed nobody had been allowed to
- 6:14Speaker 1: gather since that Tuesday.
- 6:16Speaker 2: And another thing I remember is that my nephew was
- 6:18Speaker 2: on the float and he I thought, Oh, this will
- 6:20Speaker 2: be fun for him. He was He was bored in
- 6:22Speaker 2: thirty seconds, right, And I was like, oh fuck, I
- 6:24Speaker 2: got to take care of this kid for a whole parade.
- 6:26Speaker 4: Yeah, we had to. It's all the way from Uptown,
- 6:29Speaker 4: all the way to Mason. Yeah.
- 6:30Speaker 2: And he's throwing his gang signs for a while and
- 6:32Speaker 2: then he got bored of that and then there was
- 6:34Speaker 2: like an upstairs in the float. I don't know if
- 6:35Speaker 2: it was like it was like in Pocahontas's head or something.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Well, no, it was a multi tiered ship that was
- 6:41Speaker 1: a boat.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Yeah, but even like the in the non outside area,
- 6:45Speaker 2: there was some spot he found and then he went
- 6:47Speaker 2: up there and he found bubble wrap and I was like, okay,
- 6:49Speaker 2: fucking bubble wrap will entertain him for a little while.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Then he got over the buck. He was stomping on
- 6:54Speaker 2: the bubble wrap, and I was like, this is I'm
- 6:56Speaker 2: never having kids. This is like the worst.
- 7:00Speaker 1: What about my My only point bringing this up, and
- 7:04Speaker 1: I'll circle it back, was that. And also remember a
- 7:07Speaker 1: couple of weeks earlier, actually about a month earlier, we
- 7:10Speaker 1: had been picked up for the back nine, and we
- 7:13Speaker 1: ran around the hospital where our HUDs cut off, and
- 7:16Speaker 1: so that meant you had paychecks until May the first
- 7:20Speaker 1: week of rid yourself, because in TV you only get
- 7:23Speaker 1: paid for episodes produced, and so.
- 7:26Speaker 2: They just so you know it, just let's explain to
- 7:27Speaker 2: people who don't know the show was picked up for
- 7:30Speaker 2: the first thirteen episodes, and they kind of see how
- 7:33Speaker 2: you do in the ratings, and then if you do
- 7:36Speaker 2: well enough in the ratings, you get the rest of
- 7:37Speaker 2: the order, which which is in business talk is called
- 7:41Speaker 2: the back nine, meaning you get nine more episodes.
- 7:45Speaker 1: And we had been given that news about a month earlier,
- 7:47Speaker 1: and we ran around the hospital like we'd won the
- 7:49Speaker 1: Stanley Coppers. I remember, vivid.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:53Speaker 1: And my only point in this is that between getting
- 7:55Speaker 1: picked up and now about fifteen or sixteen episodes into it,
- 7:58Speaker 1: and I can see it in this episode as we'll discuss,
- 8:02Speaker 1: but the ensemble is water tight, whether it meant going
- 8:06Speaker 1: on a trip together or getting picked up, people are
- 8:08Speaker 1: starting to vibe off each other. And it's as clear
- 8:11Speaker 1: as day when I was watching it. It's just what
- 8:14Speaker 1: Donald and Sarah are doing. As you guys know, I
- 8:17Speaker 1: think the camera is an X ray machine and it
- 8:19Speaker 1: sees through all the bullshit and what they're doing together,
- 8:23Speaker 1: there's zero bullshit. And what Zach is doing at the
- 8:26Speaker 1: end with Sarah in that in that on that cot,
- 8:30Speaker 1: there's no bullshit. It's it's just tight and right. And
- 8:34Speaker 1: I just got a chill. It just it really got me.
- 8:37Speaker 2: You gave me a chill too, because I gotta tell you,
- 8:39Speaker 2: I didn't remember in that scene with Sarah what happened.
- 8:42Speaker 2: I didn't know if it was going to turn romantic.
- 8:44Speaker 2: I didn't know if I cried, I couldn't remember. And
- 8:47Speaker 2: I was actually moved by the two of us because
- 8:50Speaker 2: nothing happens like I agree, like I agree, like like
- 8:54Speaker 2: you like would happen in real life. You know, in
- 8:56Speaker 2: the movies, we'd kiss. In the movies, I'd break down
- 8:59Speaker 2: and cry, But in real life two friends might just
- 9:01Speaker 2: sit there in silence for a minute. And I just
- 9:03Speaker 2: thought that was beautifully done.
- 9:05Speaker 1: I think it's the real privilege of friendship when nothing
- 9:08Speaker 1: does happen, so that I don't have to demonstrate to
- 9:12Speaker 1: you anything and you don't have to demonstrate ending to me.
- 9:15Speaker 1: And real friendship is when stuff is allowed. And it's
- 9:18Speaker 1: a tricky verb to settle, and you guys let it
- 9:21Speaker 1: settle in front of the lens. And as we'll discuss
- 9:24Speaker 1: Will McKenzie, he just let the scene play and the
- 9:27Speaker 1: two actors it's really lovely. And on a primetime comedy,
- 9:31Speaker 1: it's spectacular. It's spectacular.
- 9:35Speaker 4: Should we start the show?
- 9:36Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 9:36Speaker 2: But which is that the show? But I think Johnny,
- 9:38Speaker 2: because of that beautiful prologue, should should have the honor
- 9:41Speaker 2: of counting a Sindo. The song Johnny Fleet.
- 9:45Speaker 5: Stories about show we made about a bunch of dogs.
- 9:53Speaker 4: He said, he's the stories.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Scrub So I've been using this Scrubs Wiki Johnny that that.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Get is scrubs. I've heard you reference it. By the way,
- 10:15Speaker 1: you guys are killing this podcast a lot of Scrubs Wiki.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Scrubs wiki is uh. If you just put in scrubs
- 10:22Speaker 2: wiki into into the Google machine, it brings you up.
- 10:26Speaker 2: This this thing that I guess multiple fans are. One
- 10:30Speaker 2: fan has curated. It's on a website called fandom dot com.
- 10:33Speaker 2: I guess it's a place where where fans can collect
- 10:36Speaker 2: trivia and share stories, and you know it's a fan site.
- 10:39Speaker 2: But someone, and I'm thinking it might be one person,
- 10:42Speaker 2: has put a lot of work into this because every
- 10:45Speaker 2: episode it has the synopsis, it has recurring themes, it
- 10:47Speaker 2: has guest stars, it has the famous quotes, and it
- 10:50Speaker 2: has trivia form each episode and today and I often
- 10:53Speaker 2: reference it, and today I went to look at the
- 10:55Speaker 2: trivia and the first line of trivia it says, hi
- 10:58Speaker 2: Zac exclamation point, glad you're enjoying Scrubs Wiki. Have me
- 11:03Speaker 2: on the podcast question mark, have Joel search for my email.
- 11:08Speaker 4: Wow.
- 11:09Speaker 2: So I've been discovered by the curator of Scrubs Wiki
- 11:12Speaker 2: as a as an avid fan. But I will have
- 11:15Speaker 2: Joel seek you out and I and I have to
- 11:18Speaker 2: tell you've done a fantastic job because it's very useful.
- 11:20Speaker 2: I can find out all sorts of of trivia. Like
- 11:23Speaker 2: Kelso mentions Baxter for the very first time in this.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Episode, there's a lot of trivia in here.
- 11:28Speaker 2: There's a lot of interesting stuff. So I think, Yeah,
- 11:31Speaker 2: Joel says she's going to track him down, and this
- 11:33Speaker 2: fellah knows a lot about Scrubs, so I think it
- 11:36Speaker 2: might be fun to have him on. We can, we
- 11:38Speaker 2: can try and stump him.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Well, let me get to you at at at early on,
- 11:42Speaker 1: at at a minute or two in you and Sarah
- 11:44Speaker 1: in the batting cage, you.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Zach, Yeah, why am I? Why is Jad at the
- 11:48Speaker 2: at the batting kids?
- 11:48Speaker 1: You know? Well, it's as Donald as Donald knows. No
- 11:51Speaker 1: one says you don't even play sports. There's no no
- 11:54Speaker 1: one's ever said that in the history of the English language,
- 11:58Speaker 1: which is great writing, and you deliver like you really
- 12:00Speaker 1: know sports. But I mean you and Sarah in there.
- 12:03Speaker 1: You redeem yourself from early on when you get bricks
- 12:06Speaker 1: dropped on your head and you anticipated it. You don't
- 12:09Speaker 1: anticipate the beanball in this, and neither does Sarah.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Yeah, well I gotta tell you I commit it. Yeah
- 12:16Speaker 2: we did. I did not flinch. I was not gonna
- 12:18Speaker 2: let that happen again, Johnny, from that, from that happen again.
- 12:21Speaker 2: And and it's hard to you know, to anticipate, uh,
- 12:25Speaker 2: to not anticipate a softball being thrown at your head.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Well, you both did it, and as a result, it's
- 12:32Speaker 1: it's Charlie Chaplin funny.
- 12:33Speaker 2: But why is why is j D at the bating gage?
- 12:35Speaker 2: He's not even with Turk like maybe one thing, one thing.
- 12:38Speaker 2: He's a good turk like Turk made me come I'm
- 12:39Speaker 2: alone at the batting gages.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Neither one of you played sports, neither one of you
- 12:43Speaker 3: playing baseball, neither one of you in real life too,
- 12:49Speaker 3: I know. But why I think Sarah, Like in high school, Sarah.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Was like on the shot put team.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Yeah, who's on the shot put? I've never heard Sarah
- 12:59Speaker 2: talk about single sport, have you?
- 13:01Speaker 1: Oh?
- 13:01Speaker 2: Ski, she's a good snowboarder, snowboard yeah, yeah, yeah, she's Canadian.
- 13:06Speaker 2: I think that's a rule up there. You got to
- 13:07Speaker 2: be able to ski or snowboard, but she Yeah, I
- 13:11Speaker 2: just didn't understand that bit of writing. Mike Schwartz, we
- 13:13Speaker 2: should say he was the writer of this episode, along
- 13:16Speaker 2: with as Johnny mentioned, Will McKenzie, who is a concredible
- 13:19Speaker 2: director and directed Everybody's a lot of people's favorite episode,
- 13:23Speaker 2: the musical episode.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Will McKenzie is famous on set for the way he
- 13:28Speaker 1: says acid yeah.
- 13:30Speaker 2: And and cut yeah do it?
- 13:33Speaker 4: Did you remember? Do you remember? Johnny?
- 13:35Speaker 2: How does But he also does this so coming into
- 13:39Speaker 2: the room, Yeah, he sums up the scene. He's like, okay,
- 13:44Speaker 2: and here comes Donald and he's mad about what Carla
- 13:46Speaker 2: just did and action.
- 13:50Speaker 1: This is and cup.
- 13:52Speaker 2: I think he's he's directed a zillion sitcoms too. I
- 13:55Speaker 2: mean he was, he was, you know, he's a legendary
- 13:58Speaker 2: TV director. He I think he's retired, I imagine now,
- 14:01Speaker 2: but he is just a legend.
- 14:03Speaker 3: And a pretty good tennis player apparently really and yeah,
- 14:07Speaker 3: that's what I heard.
- 14:08Speaker 2: That's what you heard.
- 14:09Speaker 4: I heard. Will can make it so you're running around
- 14:12Speaker 4: while he's standing in one place.
- 14:14Speaker 2: There were a lot of directors that when you showed
- 14:16Speaker 2: up on set on Monday morning, you saw who it
- 14:18Speaker 2: was and you just had a big old smile on
- 14:21Speaker 2: your face. And Will McKenzie was always one of those
- 14:24Speaker 2: guys for all of us. We just would like he
- 14:26Speaker 2: was like, you know, he just just felt like a
- 14:28Speaker 2: grandfather figure because he was an older guy, but he
- 14:33Speaker 2: had so much experience and he had a big old
- 14:35Speaker 2: smile on his face and I just I love that guy.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Also in this in this episode, some of the I
- 14:41Speaker 1: don't know how to say this, some of the peripheral characters,
- 14:43Speaker 1: whether it's Sammy, which I'll get to in a minute,
- 14:46Speaker 1: or Neil is a janitor get to really shine. Yeah,
- 14:52Speaker 1: and and the janitor and it I guess I think
- 14:55Speaker 1: one O three when he says girl problems and then
- 14:59Speaker 1: you say, and then Cox says, I'd say they're a
- 15:02Speaker 1: bea cup and the button is at least they're real
- 15:06Speaker 1: laugh out loud. I'm stealing. I'm stealing Zachy's laugh out loud.
- 15:09Speaker 2: I did. I laughed out loud at that man. And uh,
- 15:12Speaker 2: you know, because it's funny because you know, we keep
- 15:15Speaker 2: fucking with Bill Johnny because he's he's hanging on by
- 15:18Speaker 2: his fingernails to this old lore that the janitor barely
- 15:22Speaker 2: talked to anybody in season one, and and he was
- 15:25Speaker 2: just still deciding by the time he started season two
- 15:28Speaker 2: if he was going to make the Janitor solely a
- 15:30Speaker 2: figment of Jad's imagination hanging on.
- 15:32Speaker 3: He is, And and every episode the Janitor's talking to
- 15:38Speaker 3: a different cast.
- 15:39Speaker 2: And Donald and I, Donald and I joke that we're
- 15:41Speaker 2: like detective as being like, well, how would Bill possibly
- 15:44Speaker 2: rationalize this one? And uh, you know again, Bill would say, well,
- 15:49Speaker 2: he's not interacting with Johnny. See, he just he just
- 15:51Speaker 2: if he's a if he's a figure of Jad's imagination,
- 15:53Speaker 2: he hears what Cox says and just builds on it,
- 15:55Speaker 2: you know.
- 15:57Speaker 1: But but also, and I'm going to keep circling back
- 15:59Speaker 1: with this, you could see And in this case, it's
- 16:02Speaker 1: just a simple, clean scene Donald and Zach at two nine,
- 16:06Speaker 1: when you take the phone call from your mom and
- 16:08Speaker 1: you find out about mister Peters, you too are just
- 16:11Speaker 1: it's in carpentry, it's called tongue and groove. You guys
- 16:15Speaker 1: are just effortless, and it sets up the whole scene.
- 16:18Speaker 1: There's a ton of n expository stuff in it, and
- 16:23Speaker 1: it's just effortless. And it's only because of what you
- 16:29Speaker 1: guys had become in those I guess seventeen or eighteen
- 16:32Speaker 1: weeks by then.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I remember, well, I don't. I don't remember any
- 16:36Speaker 3: of this episode except for the handshake. And I had
- 16:39Speaker 3: no idea even and when we did the handshake, I
- 16:42Speaker 3: had no clue what Sarah and I like. I thought
- 16:44Speaker 3: it was something that Sarah and I made up on
- 16:46Speaker 3: set and it turned into something in the scene. But
- 16:51Speaker 3: I think we made it up for the scene and
- 16:53Speaker 3: it turned into something that we did on set.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Yeah, we saw this handshake. Johnny and I had to
- 16:59Speaker 2: endure this handshake get longer and longer. I think by
- 17:01Speaker 2: the end of it. I think by the end of
- 17:03Speaker 2: nine years, it took them an hour and a half
- 17:04Speaker 2: to do the handshake.
- 17:05Speaker 4: And that was just to say hello to each other.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Yeah. During during the Vietnam War, I found out it
- 17:10Speaker 1: was called a dap A dap you would adapt somebody.
- 17:15Speaker 2: But wait, now, Donald, you don't remember if you guys
- 17:18Speaker 2: were just walking around and made this up and then
- 17:20Speaker 2: put it in the show, or.
- 17:21Speaker 3: I think it came from the handshake in the show.
- 17:25Speaker 3: I think our handshake, we made it up for the show,
- 17:29Speaker 3: and then it turned into something that we did all
- 17:31Speaker 3: the time when we saw each other.
- 17:32Speaker 1: But that that, once again is what I'm talking about.
- 17:35Speaker 1: It's effortless. Yeah, it doesn't. Did you just complete with
- 17:40Speaker 1: totally long and and then you guys throw it away
- 17:42Speaker 1: and go right into the scene and that that's later on.
- 17:45Speaker 1: But I was so struck by so many of these vignettes.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Ye completely tongue and groove.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, man, and and and and Donald. Did
- 17:57Speaker 2: you make that up or did Sarah contribute? Like it's
- 17:59Speaker 2: pretty great some of it.
- 18:01Speaker 3: I made up a lot of it. I know I
- 18:03Speaker 3: made up because it's uh, it.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Has it has rhythm to it. That's why.
- 18:06Speaker 4: Well there's that, and then there's also.
- 18:09Speaker 1: There's even Sarah could do all that stuff, Yes, you could.
- 18:12Speaker 4: There was.
- 18:13Speaker 3: It was also a like what is it that remember
- 18:16Speaker 3: how we were talking about the color purple and miss
- 18:19Speaker 3: when Celia and her sister are broken up and they're
- 18:22Speaker 3: doing they.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Miss patty cake Cake.
- 18:25Speaker 3: Yeah, so it also has a little bit of that
- 18:28Speaker 3: in it where it's like where we slap each other's hand.
- 18:32Speaker 3: I don't know, man, all I know is yeah, no,
- 18:35Speaker 3: that thing was made up for this episode and it turned.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Into I like, I like what Johnny said too, that
- 18:40Speaker 2: you kind of go into this ale everything and then
- 18:42Speaker 2: you just kind of go into the scene like nothing happened.
- 18:44Speaker 2: It's just dull. You just did a high five.
- 18:46Speaker 1: I thought that, But it's the same way. It's the
- 18:48Speaker 1: same way. I feel like, I'm maybe it sounds like
- 18:52Speaker 1: I'm blown too much. Smoke up your guys, asses, but
- 18:54Speaker 1: I'll take it.
- 18:54Speaker 2: We'll take it.
- 18:55Speaker 1: I'm like Donald, I don't remember any of this stuff.
- 18:57Speaker 1: So then when we go back and watch it, I'm
- 19:00Speaker 1: I'm sincerely struck by different things. And in this episode,
- 19:04Speaker 1: unlike the last one we watched together, I wasn't struck
- 19:08Speaker 1: by as many things other than the circumstances that were
- 19:10Speaker 1: occurring outside of scrubs. In this I was really struck
- 19:14Speaker 1: by what was happening in front of the lens and
- 19:16Speaker 1: what the writers did. And then in three minutes there's
- 19:19Speaker 1: this great walking talk between Zachi and Cox, and the
- 19:22Speaker 1: writers let Cox be this fierce, fierce patient advocate, and
- 19:29Speaker 1: it grounds them in a way that it's just genius
- 19:32Speaker 1: because it gives them license to then go do what
- 19:34Speaker 1: he's about to go do, which is destroy a lab.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Now, this is the first time we really see Cox
- 19:41Speaker 2: have this raw motion, Johnny, I think that you know,
- 19:44Speaker 2: we had seen him be upset. There's the episode where's
- 19:48Speaker 2: where he's just saying, Jad, you need to have a life.
- 19:50Speaker 2: I have no fucking life. But this is, you know,
- 19:53Speaker 2: the first time we see how much pain this man
- 19:56Speaker 2: has and how dedicated he is to his profession. So
- 20:00Speaker 2: I just talked a bit about that. And of course
- 20:02Speaker 2: destroying this lab paper in the Backgrock with Charles pappard
- 20:09Speaker 2: Our steadycam operators back is the one of the lab texts.
- 20:12Speaker 2: But I mean, do you remember that day trashing that lab?
- 20:15Speaker 2: That must have been cathartic.
- 20:16Speaker 1: I do, and I had. I had been lucky enough
- 20:20Speaker 1: in nineteen ninety four, and lucky is in italics to
- 20:24Speaker 1: have been with Michael Caine, your actor in your lovely
- 20:28Speaker 1: movie up in Valdis, Alaska and with Steven Sigal directing
- 20:35Speaker 1: an epic movie for Warner Brothers called on Deadly Ground.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Stephen was there and I got to destroy a house,
- 20:43Speaker 1: and halfway through it I find a petrified walrus penis,
- 20:47Speaker 1: which is called an usk, and so I slow down.
- 20:52Speaker 2: You're gonna not. You can't rush, You can't The listeners
- 20:55Speaker 2: that the listeners have questions, how did you find a
- 21:00Speaker 2: Don't worry, we're gonna get back to destroying the lab. Everybody,
- 21:03Speaker 2: How did you How did you know that it was
- 21:05Speaker 2: a petrified walrus penis?
- 21:06Speaker 1: I asked, there's this long fallus and I asked the
- 21:09Speaker 1: production designer, I said, what's this and he goes, well,
- 21:12Speaker 1: it's a petrified walr's penis. And he said, God old mighty,
- 21:16Speaker 1: just call action and get on my eyeline.
- 21:19Speaker 6: If you don't think that's coming in the frame, you're
- 21:22Speaker 6: out of your mind.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Look out, everybody.
- 21:26Speaker 1: And so I I what my takeaway from destroying house,
- 21:31Speaker 1: just destroying it was go slow. If you destroy a
- 21:36Speaker 1: house or a lab too fast, the camera doesn't get it.
- 21:39Speaker 1: It's just like as Donald definitely knows, either taking or
- 21:42Speaker 1: throwing a punch in front of the lens. If you
- 21:44Speaker 1: go too fast, the camera doesn't see it. Yeah, And
- 21:47Speaker 1: it's the same same with destroying a room. You've got
- 21:50Speaker 1: to go slow. And it's funny Billy who or will
- 21:55Speaker 1: ramped it up to high speed for the throw through
- 21:58Speaker 1: the window, because otherwise that stuff happens too fast and
- 22:02Speaker 1: you don't get it. Yeah. And I'm sure Zach as
- 22:04Speaker 1: a filmmaker you know, unless you cover a fight or
- 22:08Speaker 1: destroying something pretty meticulously, the lens misses it. And so
- 22:14Speaker 1: my only thought in destroying that lab was take your time. Yeah.
- 22:18Speaker 3: Well, when I watched that, I was like, how much
- 22:20Speaker 3: trouble would doctor Cox be and if he were to
- 22:23Speaker 3: do that? And how much money did he just throw
- 22:26Speaker 3: out the window by doing all of that?
- 22:29Speaker 1: I know, I was thinking the same thing.
- 22:31Speaker 2: I thought the same thing too. I thought like, did
- 22:33Speaker 2: they have some system or no one's gonna tell kelso,
- 22:35Speaker 2: because I mean, Carla implies that he freaks out at
- 22:39Speaker 2: least once a year, right, And I was like, does
- 22:41Speaker 2: everyone sort of protect him because you know, in the
- 22:45Speaker 2: real world of a hospital, he'd be in a phenomenal
- 22:48Speaker 2: amount of trouble for this.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I couldn't. That was the first thing I thought.
- 22:54Speaker 3: And then I thought when Carla said he does this
- 22:57Speaker 3: once a year, I was like, holy shit, Cox is
- 23:01Speaker 3: you know, it's clear that he's in pain, but he's
- 23:03Speaker 3: in like a lot of pain. And to build it
- 23:06Speaker 3: up to be able to just damage thousands of dollars
- 23:09Speaker 3: of equipment, you know what I mean? You have to
- 23:11Speaker 3: really you have to really be on that level of
- 23:14Speaker 3: fuck it I'm I don't care anymore.
- 23:16Speaker 4: I just I just he clearly doesn't care anymore.
- 23:19Speaker 2: But they also really need Cox, you know Cox.
- 23:21Speaker 4: Everybody needs Cox. You're absolutely right. Well look what you
- 23:25Speaker 4: just said, Donald, that was that came out a little different.
- 23:28Speaker 1: You're gonna pull over there, Donald, You're going fifty.
- 23:31Speaker 2: I'm gonna I'm gonna that's gonna be my new ringtone,
- 23:34Speaker 2: Donald yelling everybody needs Cox.
- 23:41Speaker 3: In the hospital, in the hospital, at the hospital that
- 23:45Speaker 3: I met the character.
- 23:47Speaker 1: And then and then at four thirty nine, we get
- 23:50Speaker 1: to see the janitor do medical jargon. Yeah, yeah, and
- 23:54Speaker 1: he kills it.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Yeah. I remember you know that Neil audition for your part,
- 23:58Speaker 2: you know that trivia Johnny.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Of course, but I mean, he's such a spectacular actor,
- 24:03Speaker 1: but I've never seen him do. You Gotta remember, all
- 24:06Speaker 1: medical jargon is Latin based, so when you really get
- 24:10Speaker 1: into it, you're just talking Latin. And so for the
- 24:13Speaker 1: janitor just to peel out some Latin question.
- 24:16Speaker 2: By the way, I wondered, when I wondered if I
- 24:18Speaker 2: think that might be the only time the janitors ever
- 24:20Speaker 2: in our apartment.
- 24:21Speaker 3: I was gonna ask that we should ask Bill if
- 24:24Speaker 3: he remembers putting the janitor in the apartment at any point.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Okay, Donald has pulled the lever for an ask Bill. Joell, Bill,
- 24:33Speaker 2: you're not gonna remember. I bet the guy on WICKI
- 24:36Speaker 2: Scrubs knows better than you, But we're gonna ask you.
- 24:39Speaker 2: By the way, you know we should do We should also, Joelle,
- 24:41Speaker 2: that's what we should do with that guy. We should
- 24:43Speaker 2: haven't asked Bill Button, but we should haven't also asked
- 24:46Speaker 2: the Scrubs wicky because he knows he's the keeper of
- 24:50Speaker 2: the trivia more than Bill. Bill's gonna be like, I
- 24:51Speaker 2: don't know, five, six, seven, eight, and uh Bill, Bill
- 24:56Speaker 2: has found is what you're talking about? Willis Johnny. He
- 25:00Speaker 2: he's found his catchphrase. So now he just says five
- 25:02Speaker 2: and the fans think it's hilarious. He just starts hilarious,
- 25:05Speaker 2: he starts the theme song, and Donald and I have
- 25:07Speaker 2: to stop the damn thing. So anyway, Joelle, when we
- 25:12Speaker 2: talk to that guy, when we find him, let's ask
- 25:14Speaker 2: him if we can ask him a Scrubs trivia. But
- 25:16Speaker 2: for now, since we only have Bill, Bill, do you
- 25:19Speaker 2: think this is the only time that the janitor is
- 25:21Speaker 2: ever in our apartment? Even though it's a fantasy.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Neil.
- 25:25Speaker 7: I'm going by memory here, guys, But Neil Flynn was
- 25:28Speaker 7: in Turk and JD's apartment when there's a fantasy about
- 25:33Speaker 7: him being a doctor, and I believe he returns to
- 25:37Speaker 7: try and fix their air conditioning or pipes or something
- 25:43Speaker 7: in a later season. But I think he was only
- 25:45Speaker 7: there twice except once I think he was implied that
- 25:52Speaker 7: he was there a third time, that he and doctor
- 25:54Speaker 7: Cox moved JD's bed somewhere and they did it together.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Thank you, Bill.
- 26:00Speaker 1: And once again at five point forty nine when when
- 26:04Speaker 1: Kenny and when Kelso and and and Jude are together,
- 26:09Speaker 1: they're butter. They're total butter. Oh gosh, yeah, they're butter.
- 26:14Speaker 2: Now how about Judy, they're they they're great. How about Judy?
- 26:16Speaker 2: So for first Judy, I noticed, because this is funny
- 26:19Speaker 2: tracking the when we shot this in two thousand and one,
- 26:23Speaker 2: that Judy says I got to get a tape deck,
- 26:25Speaker 2: which I thought was funny. And then and then when
- 26:28Speaker 2: she brings in and it's actually a CD player, it's
- 26:31Speaker 2: just funny.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Even now you realize that you're you're definitely pretty good show, dude.
- 26:35Speaker 4: That's very good, because I did not pick up on that.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Well, I caught her. I caught her saying tape deck,
- 26:40Speaker 2: and then my brain went, there's no way it was cassettes.
- 26:43Speaker 2: I remember it was at least CDs and uh and
- 26:46Speaker 2: then and I guess that was just still I'm imagining.
- 26:49Speaker 2: In two thousand and one, we were still using the
- 26:51Speaker 2: expression tape deck, like I'll get a tape deck and.
- 26:54Speaker 1: I have a I have a question for you. On
- 26:56Speaker 1: the heels of that, when Kenny says, like Motley Crue
- 27:00Speaker 1: and Winger, my son's a bit of a headbanger, first
- 27:03Speaker 1: of all, that crushed me. And second is that the
- 27:05Speaker 1: first time, first of many when he refers to his son,
- 27:09Speaker 1: who turns out is just a cavalcade of eccentricity.
- 27:15Speaker 2: A cavalcade of eccentricities is a great title for a screenplay,
- 27:19Speaker 2: but that is funny. The Scrubs wiki said, it's the
- 27:24Speaker 2: first time he mentions Baxter. I don't know if it's
- 27:26Speaker 2: the first time his son comes up, but this might
- 27:28Speaker 2: be the first time his son comes up in terms
- 27:30Speaker 2: of being a cavalcade of eccentricity.
- 27:35Speaker 6: His son, it turns out it's the single most tortured
- 27:38Speaker 6: person on the.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Planet I know and we never got to meet him,
- 27:41Speaker 2: and we never met his wife. I think it was Eenil.
- 27:43Speaker 1: But it's so much better. It's so much better.
- 27:45Speaker 2: No, it was all Remember remember on Cheers when you
- 27:48Speaker 2: never saw Cliff's family. No, I think it was Norm's
- 27:53Speaker 2: wife Vera, we never saw. Well gave me the thumbs up?
- 27:56Speaker 2: Am I right? Joelle?
- 27:57Speaker 1: Wow?
- 27:57Speaker 4: Well, well played Zach.
- 28:00Speaker 2: That bartender would always ali up him, see I bet
- 28:03Speaker 2: sports reference and and then he'd he'd have a one
- 28:06Speaker 2: liner and and and dunk it if he I.
- 28:08Speaker 3: Blew the I bleuw the one line because I didn't
- 28:10Speaker 3: remember it. Veratt does make an appearance on Cheers, though,
- 28:12Speaker 3: I guess.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Really and then well won Well, Joelle, did you go
- 28:15Speaker 2: on the Cheers wiki and find out that Vera does
- 28:18Speaker 2: make an appearance on the Thanksgiving Day episode?
- 28:20Speaker 1: As you guys, As you guys have done so wonderfully.
- 28:24Speaker 1: I do want to look at Sammy for a second.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Who uh is astonishing episode?
- 28:32Speaker 2: This really is?
- 28:32Speaker 1: Probably is?
- 28:33Speaker 2: This probably is I hate to say it, but probably
- 28:37Speaker 2: his first real I mean, other than one liners. This
- 28:40Speaker 2: is the first episode where Sammy really shined.
- 28:43Speaker 1: And even even when he and he and and Jude
- 28:46Speaker 1: together are are completely money.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Did you guys get goosebumps when they sang together?
- 28:52Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, absolutely. But the first time we see Sammy,
- 28:56Speaker 1: he does this thing with his hand where he puts
- 28:59Speaker 1: it way in the back of his donald. My triceps
- 29:03Speaker 1: are too big to even do this.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Get your fucking arms, arms to you, to you listeners
- 29:10Speaker 2: out there. I want you to know this guy is
- 29:12Speaker 2: still fucking ripped. He's got bigger biceps than than anyone
- 29:17Speaker 2: I I know. I think.
- 29:19Speaker 4: Are you still doing a lot of paddlesurfing?
- 29:21Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 29:21Speaker 2: Every day, every day you paddle surf. Yeah, john Johnny, Johnny,
- 29:27Speaker 2: you are Let.
- 29:28Speaker 3: Me say something, you got, mister Miyagi body where it's
- 29:31Speaker 3: like you're doing you know active, you know, everything is
- 29:35Speaker 3: for a purpose. I wrot, I row a board in
- 29:41Speaker 3: the ocean. I'm using my hands to build.
- 29:44Speaker 2: I thought you were saying. I thought you were saying
- 29:46Speaker 2: he had the body of Pat Marita, and I was like, no,
- 29:48Speaker 2: he does not.
- 29:50Speaker 4: But when Sammy wax on wax off.
- 29:53Speaker 1: The first time we see Sammy, he's got that hand
- 29:55Speaker 1: over his head and then the button on the scene
- 29:58Speaker 1: with Judy is he was careful. I've been hurt before.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Yeah, oh my God, he dropped me, drop me. He
- 30:05Speaker 2: loves Judy, he loves Carla, he loves.
- 30:07Speaker 4: Car She hugs him and he's like, don't let go.
- 30:10Speaker 6: And for those and well that's later on and for
- 30:13Speaker 6: those who don't know asides, when you keeping a side real,
- 30:17Speaker 6: it's almost impossible because if you don't do it right,
- 30:21Speaker 6: you come off as a crazy person because you're talking
- 30:24Speaker 6: to yourself.
- 30:24Speaker 1: And Sammy does it with careful I've been hurt before.
- 30:28Speaker 1: And then when he and Judy get back together later on,
- 30:31Speaker 1: he is two that are genius.
- 30:33Speaker 6: He says, she knows, she knows your name, he says
- 30:37Speaker 6: to himself, and then he says, don't let go.
- 30:43Speaker 1: It dropped me and I can't.
- 30:45Speaker 4: Tell you how.
- 30:47Speaker 3: Yeah, he has one more when he's like, I love
- 30:49Speaker 3: you and she turns around like what.
- 30:51Speaker 2: And he goes right back to the song. Yeah, but
- 30:54Speaker 2: that song you got, I mean, we're jumping all over
- 30:56Speaker 2: the place, but that song moment was so beautiful, and
- 30:59Speaker 2: I forget. I apologize to the universe that I forgot.
- 31:03Speaker 2: How pretty Judy's voice.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Is me too, Yeah, and she slays and.
- 31:08Speaker 2: It's beautiful and their harmonies, I mean, Sammy, we knew
- 31:11Speaker 2: because sam was an amazing singer, and it was an
- 31:13Speaker 2: a cappella group, but the two of them together, their
- 31:15Speaker 2: harmonies were I got goosebumps over my body.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Yeah, now let me ask you something, uh Zachi. Yes,
- 31:22Speaker 1: And I could see you, I could see you ringing
- 31:24Speaker 1: this one out as hard as you could. Was this
- 31:27Speaker 1: Billy or you on Beaker's beakers?
- 31:30Speaker 2: It's probably me.
- 31:32Speaker 1: You were ringing everything out of that.
- 31:35Speaker 2: I know there's certain is there certains, there's just funny beakers.
- 31:40Speaker 2: I I think I think it was probably not in
- 31:43Speaker 2: the script because that wouldn't probably been funny on the page.
- 31:46Speaker 2: But I was probably just riffing like words that sounded funny.
- 31:51Speaker 2: And we should say it's the first appearance of Franklin
- 31:53Speaker 2: played by Masioka.
- 31:54Speaker 3: Yeah, about to say Massi oh. Before he went on
- 31:57Speaker 3: to be a time traveling star of Heroes.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Right, he was the star of the show Heroes. Yeah,
- 32:04Speaker 2: and I think this was his first juicy gig. He
- 32:08Speaker 2: recurred as Franklin.
- 32:10Speaker 4: For a while.
- 32:10Speaker 1: He's very he's very good.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Yeah, he was funny, hugging is hugging his favorite microscope
- 32:15Speaker 2: so that you didn't destroy it.
- 32:18Speaker 1: And then and then at eight minutes, we go to
- 32:20Speaker 1: what I referenced earlier is Sarah and Donald, and it's
- 32:24Speaker 1: it's what I started this whole thing off with with. However,
- 32:26Speaker 1: this ensemble jeld, whether it was just time or traveling
- 32:31Speaker 1: together and getting into it. You guys are effortless, all.
- 32:35Speaker 2: Right, But let's go a little bit back. Johnny, you're
- 32:37Speaker 2: going too fast. First of all, oh, dear Lord, please
- 32:40Speaker 2: tell me that's not a onesie.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Oh god.
- 32:45Speaker 2: And now doctor Cox says, first of all, I'm wearing
- 32:48Speaker 2: a onesie, which I love a onesie. I don't wear
- 32:51Speaker 2: a onesie it to bed, but man, when I have
- 32:52Speaker 2: a onesie on do I love a onesie? And I
- 32:55Speaker 2: guess JD really loved one because he wears it to
- 32:59Speaker 2: the bar. And then and then Cox pulls over the
- 33:02Speaker 2: two ladies to flirt.
- 33:03Speaker 4: Okay, before you go past what I had.
- 33:05Speaker 1: But that's that's at eleven twenty eight. I'm gonna I'm
- 33:08Speaker 1: gonna eight.
- 33:08Speaker 2: I know, I'm, I'm I'm the ones He occurs at
- 33:11Speaker 2: seven oh six. Oh okay, now, but go ahead, Donald.
- 33:16Speaker 4: Uh Minty? First of all, what were y'all drinking in
- 33:19Speaker 4: your shots? If that was Minty?
- 33:21Speaker 2: No, the the the toothbrush was minty.
- 33:24Speaker 4: Oh, still from the after you dipped it into.
- 33:27Speaker 2: I don't know, it doesn't track. I guess you're right,
- 33:28Speaker 2: because the toothpaste would have been off of it.
- 33:30Speaker 3: But that's it was hilary because and then right after that,
- 33:33Speaker 3: yuck yack, yuck.
- 33:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you know what I was thinking of. Do
- 33:37Speaker 2: you remember do you remember I don't know if you
- 33:39Speaker 2: remember this, Donald, but don Johnny, you definitely remember Easy
- 33:41Speaker 2: Rider when uh, whenever Nicholson would do a shot, he
- 33:46Speaker 2: would he would just say a random word because the
- 33:49Speaker 2: shot was so bad and an easy Rider. He'd do
- 33:51Speaker 2: the shot and he goes, but he would say like
- 33:54Speaker 2: a random word that would like help him recover from
- 33:57Speaker 2: how bad the shot was. And that's that's what I
- 33:59Speaker 2: was thinking of when I when I when I did it,
- 34:01Speaker 2: I was like, yuck, trying so hard to be manly
- 34:06Speaker 2: in front of Cox, but I'm in a onesie with
- 34:09Speaker 2: a toothbrush.
- 34:11Speaker 1: It was funny when you go yucky and then the
- 34:12Speaker 1: writers give Cox, uh, oh great, I'm drinking with a
- 34:15Speaker 1: mouseket deer.
- 34:18Speaker 3: Like I said, I didn't remember this episode at all,
- 34:20Speaker 3: so I never knew that you guys had a wingman
- 34:23Speaker 3: uh situation going on the two of you.
- 34:26Speaker 4: What happened?
- 34:27Speaker 3: I know that one girl blows it because she's talking
- 34:29Speaker 3: about her ex boyfriend. What happened to the girl you
- 34:33Speaker 3: were talking to?
- 34:34Speaker 2: Well, I don't think Cox has gives a flying fuck about.
- 34:38Speaker 2: He's just like here, if this if she? Cox is
- 34:40Speaker 2: like here, you want you want a reason to stay here?
- 34:42Speaker 2: Talk to these girls. I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna go.
- 34:45Speaker 2: And then JD is like, okay, now you're talking, and
- 34:48Speaker 2: he tries to hit on that one woman, but she's
- 34:50Speaker 2: just you know, rambling and rambling and rambling.
- 34:52Speaker 1: The hangman's noose is.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it's kind of it's kind of stolen from airplane.
- 34:57Speaker 1: Though it doesn't matter. No, he remembers airplane. It's absolutely hilarious.
- 35:03Speaker 1: I remember, I know, but we're dinosaurs.
- 35:07Speaker 2: No, but I think there's a scene in a moment
- 35:09Speaker 2: an airplane when someone's doing a long speech about their
- 35:12Speaker 2: past and you you cut back and the passenger next
- 35:15Speaker 2: to him has hung himself and he's swinging anyway.
- 35:20Speaker 1: I think it's really interesting. After the two girls leave
- 35:23Speaker 1: and j D and Cox are alone, I don't remember
- 35:26Speaker 1: Cox being that broken.
- 35:28Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what I was going to say he's so broken, dude,
- 35:31Speaker 3: he's so broken.
- 35:32Speaker 2: Well, it's like once a year, he you know, Carla says,
- 35:35Speaker 2: like once a year, he pretty much has a breakdown.
- 35:38Speaker 1: And I went back and I went back. As I
- 35:40Speaker 1: told you guys, I keep composition books and it's kind
- 35:43Speaker 1: of how I learned my lines. And in the margins,
- 35:46Speaker 1: I wrote notes to myself, and in that I the
- 35:49Speaker 1: first thing gig. I'll digress for a second. The first
- 35:52Speaker 1: gig I got to get at n YU was to
- 35:54Speaker 1: understudy John Tatro in Danny and the Deep Blue c
- 35:57Speaker 1: and over ats Circle Rep, which was maybe I lived
- 36:01Speaker 1: on Sullivan Street and Circle was on Bleaker, so it
- 36:04Speaker 1: was maybe a half a block from my house, and
- 36:06Speaker 1: I understudy John, and I was the assistant stage manager,
- 36:09Speaker 1: so I helped call the lights and I made up
- 36:11Speaker 1: the actors. But I had keys to the theater. And
- 36:13Speaker 1: because it's just a two hander, two hander means just
- 36:15Speaker 1: two actors on stage. It was June Stein and John,
- 36:19Speaker 1: and John went to do desperately seeking Susan. After about
- 36:22Speaker 1: eight months, he WoT he wouldn't It's eight shows a
- 36:24Speaker 1: week off Broadway and he wouldn't go down. It's a
- 36:27Speaker 1: very violent play, and so I had the keys to
- 36:29Speaker 1: the theater. So every day I would walk and do
- 36:33Speaker 1: circles on the stage because I had the keys, and
- 36:35Speaker 1: I would do both actors' parts out loud a couple
- 36:38Speaker 1: of times a day. And this was all fear based, and.
- 36:41Speaker 2: You were afraid to say, Johnny, you were afraid that
- 36:43Speaker 2: you might have to go on and you didn't want it.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I was scared to death. And John finally went
- 36:50Speaker 1: to go do Desperately Seeking Susan and which every actor
- 36:54Speaker 1: in New York wanted to be in, and so I
- 36:55Speaker 1: got to take over for him for about a week.
- 36:58Speaker 1: And there's a line that Danny has at the end
- 37:01Speaker 1: of the play where he says everything hurts. And I
- 37:05Speaker 1: worked backwards in that play from everything hurts and and
- 37:09Speaker 1: what that must mean for someone to actually say that
- 37:11Speaker 1: that everything hurts. And I gave it to Cox in
- 37:14Speaker 1: this that when we see him, there's that long profile
- 37:18Speaker 1: shot of Cox that Will stays on and everything hurts, Yeah,
- 37:23Speaker 1: and it resonates and it's nothing said, it's underneath and
- 37:27Speaker 1: Zaki's so lovely in the scene, but I just think
- 37:30Speaker 1: the guy's broken.
- 37:31Speaker 2: Yeah, And he's so incredibly committed to this job, which
- 37:37Speaker 2: is endlessly frustrating for him, not only what would be
- 37:41Speaker 2: normal dealing with so much death and pain, but that
- 37:44Speaker 2: this hospital, this this hospital that it seems is barely
- 37:49Speaker 2: surviving with with with its finances. And he opens the
- 37:54Speaker 2: episode walking around, and I noticed that Will made sure
- 37:57Speaker 2: that the ceiling panels were all fucked up. I don't
- 37:59Speaker 2: know if you noticed that, but when you when you're
- 38:00Speaker 2: looking around, being like, everything is here is fucking broken.
- 38:03Speaker 2: I'm so sick of it. And in that in that
- 38:04Speaker 2: very walk and talk moment, you're seeing like the ceilings
- 38:07Speaker 2: all fucked up, and and he's just just so frustrated,
- 38:12Speaker 2: I imagine with trying to save lives with no with
- 38:15Speaker 2: no support, with no gear like so many by the way,
- 38:18Speaker 2: like so many doctors and nurses and people must be
- 38:21Speaker 2: feeling now with the lack of of ppe they had
- 38:25Speaker 2: with with COVID.
- 38:27Speaker 1: I think it's really interested at what you were just
- 38:29Speaker 1: referencing that the writers don't even have Cocks reference it
- 38:33Speaker 1: as the hospital or or the name of the hospital.
- 38:36Speaker 1: He he just calls it that place. He can't even
- 38:39Speaker 1: he doesn't even want it in his mouth, and he says,
- 38:41Speaker 1: I can't I can't go back to that place.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Yeah, and then Jad at least feels like wow, he
- 38:48Speaker 2: I don't know what to do. He broke down what
- 38:50Speaker 2: are we going to do? And Carl was like, oh no,
- 38:51Speaker 2: he just does that once a year. He'll be fine today.
- 38:53Speaker 2: And I'm like, there's no way he's going to be fine.
- 38:56Speaker 2: And you come in like, hey.
- 38:58Speaker 3: What, it's going to be a good.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Still. I stole that from a brother, my brother's friendship.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Humph you who lives in Atlanta. Now. He used to
- 39:08Speaker 1: always go around and go it's a great day. I
- 39:13Speaker 1: put that one right in my back pocket.
- 39:15Speaker 2: You were so funny. All right, Wait, yes, we're gonna
- 39:18Speaker 2: take a break. We always forget because we're having so
- 39:20Speaker 2: much fun. We'll be right back and see. Donald, You're
- 39:34Speaker 2: giving the people what they want, which is the mm hmmm.
- 39:36Speaker 4: They asked for it, so I might as well give
- 39:39Speaker 4: it to him.
- 39:39Speaker 1: Man.
- 39:39Speaker 2: A lot of chatter, a lot of chatter on we
- 39:41Speaker 2: gotta just digress for a moment, so much chatter on
- 39:44Speaker 2: it on Instagram about about the washcloth conversation.
- 39:47Speaker 4: Well, that was a conversation. That was real deal.
- 39:49Speaker 2: Holy Field man, Johnny, did you do you use a washcloth?
- 39:52Speaker 2: In the shower.
- 39:53Speaker 3: We need to know if my wife wanted to make
- 39:55Speaker 3: sure that before we get into Johnny using the washcloth,
- 39:57Speaker 3: she wanted you guys all to know that you are
- 40:01Speaker 3: supposed to get rid of the washcloth after he shouts
- 40:05Speaker 3: it that one time, right period.
- 40:07Speaker 4: But you don't, I do what you don't?
- 40:12Speaker 2: You don't. Your wife was like, you better fucking tell
- 40:14Speaker 2: them we changed the wash cloth. There are too many
- 40:17Speaker 2: fucking people listening to this podcast. Donald, you better tell
- 40:20Speaker 2: them we change the wash cloth.
- 40:22Speaker 3: I'm telling you right, I'm telling you right now. He
- 40:24Speaker 3: changed the wash cloths. Baby, I told everybody.
- 40:28Speaker 2: See, I told everybody, Baby.
- 40:29Speaker 4: Takeing care of It's not like she listens to the
- 40:31Speaker 4: show anyway.
- 40:32Speaker 2: If you want, we can have Dan go back and
- 40:34Speaker 2: re edit that that sentence into the original wash cloth
- 40:37Speaker 2: to be.
- 40:39Speaker 1: Jesus was funny.
- 40:40Speaker 2: Well, I just want you to know that. You know,
- 40:42Speaker 2: in one in that episode, we were talking about both
- 40:45Speaker 2: what kind of merch we should have and the washcloth
- 40:47Speaker 2: to be And so now my whole Instagram feed was like,
- 40:49Speaker 2: how about merch that says team washcloth on a wash cloth?
- 40:57Speaker 3: I love it so some, he said, And now look, man,
- 41:02Speaker 3: if not look man, you know me, this is how
- 41:05Speaker 3: I am. But listen, I accumulate a lot of spit
- 41:10Speaker 3: in my mouth when I talk, so sometimes I might
- 41:14Speaker 3: when I'm talking. Listen, asshole, that's how I talk. All right,
- 41:20Speaker 3: accept it. I just did it again, And if you
- 41:23Speaker 3: got a problem with it, you can kiss my.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Ass all right?
- 41:28Speaker 1: Maybe just of course for avid listards begs the question
- 41:32Speaker 1: which instructor? Did Donald? Have no yes, because he just
- 41:36Speaker 1: went into aggressive guy.
- 41:37Speaker 2: You're right, Johnny, good call. You know.
- 41:40Speaker 3: I need to protect how I sound on this thing.
- 41:42Speaker 3: Everybody had a problem with me saying you know what
- 41:44Speaker 3: I mean. And now somebody's talking about the way I
- 41:46Speaker 3: slurp when I'm done the sentences, slur.
- 41:51Speaker 2: By the way, slurp by the way. You know they
- 41:53Speaker 2: have those fancy spit guards for the mic. We could
- 41:56Speaker 2: get you, right, Dan, we can. You know, there's like
- 41:58Speaker 2: a little circle that goes in front of the mic,
- 41:59Speaker 2: so you have to be spitting on the house.
- 42:01Speaker 4: I don't need to do any of it, all.
- 42:02Speaker 2: Right, Well, why don't you reach behind you and dab
- 42:04Speaker 2: your mouth with some sweatpants?
- 42:08Speaker 4: Fuck you?
- 42:11Speaker 2: Fuck you? Well anyway, it's just fun to see that
- 42:20Speaker 2: so many people are engaging, and we love to hear
- 42:22Speaker 2: from you, especially when it's debating things. We're debating here
- 42:26Speaker 2: because I love seeing people weigh in and be like,
- 42:28Speaker 2: I'm team washcloth and I'm from the South.
- 42:30Speaker 3: I was about to say, right right, Well, a lot
- 42:32Speaker 3: of white people that got on the on the thing
- 42:35Speaker 3: were like, yo, I do use a washcloth, but I
- 42:38Speaker 3: am from the South.
- 42:39Speaker 2: So and then some women won't be like Zach, you
- 42:42Speaker 2: can put a loofa between your cheeks, you just have
- 42:44Speaker 2: to make sure you wash it. They're washable, and I'm not.
- 42:47Speaker 2: I'm still not gonna put a scratchyof loof of between
- 42:50Speaker 2: my cheeks.
- 42:50Speaker 4: Johnny, are you team washcloth or team no washcloth?
- 42:54Speaker 1: It's funny. I use washcloths at hotels but not at home.
- 42:59Speaker 1: But at home both I just surf, I just I
- 43:01Speaker 1: just there's a shower I put in outside the building,
- 43:04Speaker 1: and I just shower out there. And so no, there's
- 43:06Speaker 1: no wash cloths up theah.
- 43:08Speaker 4: But in hotels you use the washcloths. You know what
- 43:11Speaker 4: he do?
- 43:11Speaker 2: You know why he does because he doesn't have to
- 43:13Speaker 2: worry about cleaning that fucking poo poo stain up.
- 43:18Speaker 4: That that also is a problem. For me, Zach, I'm
- 43:20Speaker 4: a problem with your poostain story.
- 43:22Speaker 2: Now why why dude, you're rehashing some shit right now? No,
- 43:25Speaker 2: pun intendent, do you have itchy all day?
- 43:28Speaker 4: Hold on, do you have itchy butt all the time?
- 43:31Speaker 2: No, you still don't understand what I'm saying.
- 43:32Speaker 4: There's no way, dude, I do understand what you're saying.
- 43:35Speaker 2: I don't have poo. If I were to swipe the
- 43:38Speaker 2: washcloth down the outside of my balloon knot, there'd be
- 43:41Speaker 2: no poo on it. But if I were to dig
- 43:44Speaker 2: a quarter inch, there'd be some remnants.
- 43:47Speaker 4: Why are you digging in your ass?
- 43:49Speaker 2: Because that's what I feel. The purpose of the wash
- 43:52Speaker 2: cloth is. I have a washcloth as my interface between
- 43:55Speaker 2: me and my rectum, and I can dig a little.
- 43:58Speaker 2: I can be aggressive, check my pro snate while I'm
- 44:01Speaker 2: in there.
- 44:01Speaker 1: Do you guys not have the magic toilet seat that
- 44:03Speaker 1: does the spray?
- 44:05Speaker 4: I wish I had.
- 44:06Speaker 2: I'm gonna get you one of those. It's a seat.
- 44:08Speaker 2: It's a seat. You put a seat.
- 44:10Speaker 1: It's not even a day. It's the most genius thing
- 44:12Speaker 1: on the planet. Yeah, we got him. We got them
- 44:14Speaker 1: at the Design Center. It's some invited event that yeah.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Yeah, it just blasts a little. It's like a it's
- 44:19Speaker 2: like a water pick for your anus.
- 44:21Speaker 1: It's the single greatest gift on the planet.
- 44:23Speaker 2: It's lovely. Donald. I'm gonna get you one for Honkah
- 44:25Speaker 2: can't wait.
- 44:26Speaker 1: Well, what you have to get him with with is
- 44:29Speaker 1: you also get a contractor to extend a water outlet
- 44:32Speaker 1: and electricity to.
- 44:33Speaker 2: Oh that's not coming with my honica. Well maybe that'll
- 44:34Speaker 2: be the second night. The first night will be the
- 44:36Speaker 2: water pick for your anus. Second night contractor.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Could we could we get back to Laverne?
- 44:48Speaker 2: Welcome back, Welcome back, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny. This is what happens.
- 44:54Speaker 2: I know, by the way, when you're into you guys,
- 44:56Speaker 2: when you're here, we can I love that Johnny's already
- 44:59Speaker 2: here being like, can we get to the episode? Which
- 45:01Speaker 2: is what I'm the one. I'm the one who's always
- 45:02Speaker 2: saying that.
- 45:03Speaker 3: We tried to digress several times, and Donnie's like, but
- 45:06Speaker 3: you know when yeah, six, So.
- 45:09Speaker 8: I wanted to do all right, let's I thought in
- 45:12Speaker 8: twelve fifty two, I thought Billy Billy likes to take
- 45:16Speaker 8: a swipe at Zachi every once in a while.
- 45:18Speaker 1: He always has run and he Laverne says, you think
- 45:22Speaker 1: so with those ears, and it's just and it's just.
- 45:26Speaker 2: Zackie goes up totally uncalled for, so fucked up. I
- 45:29Speaker 2: must have done something that week that he wanted to
- 45:31Speaker 2: take me down a notche for. I never really had
- 45:34Speaker 2: my ears this before. I mean, obviously, I have a
- 45:37Speaker 2: large nose, and I'm used, you know, anytime a caricature
- 45:41Speaker 2: artist would draw me, it would be like ninety five
- 45:43Speaker 2: percent nose, So I'm used to that. But I I
- 45:47Speaker 2: never really had my ears disc before before Nurse Roberts
- 45:50Speaker 2: went after them.
- 45:51Speaker 1: Yeah, she and she took She took no small amount
- 45:54Speaker 1: of pleasure in doing it too. No.
- 45:56Speaker 2: Red Dawn fifteen forty. I've never seen Red Dawn. I
- 45:58Speaker 2: don't know anything about her.
- 45:59Speaker 3: You fucking kidding me right now. You've never seen Red Dawn? No,
- 46:02Speaker 3: you did you audition John Lewis.
- 46:05Speaker 4: No, I didn't.
- 46:06Speaker 1: I wouldn't up to that speed yet.
- 46:08Speaker 3: Well there's a part in that. Well you're probably you're
- 46:10Speaker 3: probably way too young.
- 46:11Speaker 2: I have no idea what wolverines means. Please tell us.
- 46:14Speaker 3: Okay, So, uh, the Russians in Red Dawn, Yeah, attack America.
- 46:20Speaker 2: Yeah, Colorado, The trivia. Our trivia friend says there's a
- 46:23Speaker 2: mistake in the episode. One of you guys says, Michigan,
- 46:26Speaker 2: but it's actually Colorado.
- 46:27Speaker 3: Yeah, because the Michigan because the Michigan Michigan or the Wolverines.
- 46:31Speaker 3: The college team Michigan are the Wolverines. But it actually
- 46:34Speaker 3: takes place in Colorado. You're right, and they attack and kids,
- 46:38Speaker 3: students are the rebellion. They wind up being like all
- 46:42Speaker 3: the adults are gathered and put into concentration camps. And
- 46:46Speaker 3: Harry Dean Stanton, Yeah, see Thomas Howell, Charlie Sheen, does
- 46:52Speaker 3: it hold up? I mean they tried to. They tried
- 46:55Speaker 3: to remake it and stuff like that. The action is amazing.
- 46:58Speaker 3: Who's the the older brother?
- 47:00Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, Ghost Well, Patrick Patrick Crazy, Patrick swayze
- 47:05Speaker 4: Just so many people are in it.
- 47:06Speaker 1: Uh.
- 47:07Speaker 3: This is the first movie that Jennifer Gray and Patrick
- 47:09Speaker 3: swayzey did together. This is before Dirty Dancing.
- 47:12Speaker 1: And Lea Thompson.
- 47:13Speaker 4: Leah Thompson's in it. Also a lot of people went on.
- 47:17Speaker 1: To do.
- 47:19Speaker 6: It.
- 47:19Speaker 2: Makes me think of another before you explain that more taps.
- 47:22Speaker 2: We were talking about taps the other Do you guys remember.
- 47:24Speaker 1: That a lot of George Valley Forge Military Academy.
- 47:30Speaker 2: Yeah, and a lot of amazing actors. It was their
- 47:32Speaker 2: first big thing, Sawn Sean and Tom Cruise.
- 47:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 47:37Speaker 2: But anyway, go back to the plot of Loverne.
- 47:39Speaker 3: So the kids, the kids, and the and the school
- 47:43Speaker 3: that the kids they're all like on the football team
- 47:45Speaker 3: and stuff like that. And the football team of the
- 47:47Speaker 3: school is called the Wolverines. And so when they're when
- 47:51Speaker 3: they're in the fight with the Russians, their victory cry
- 47:56Speaker 3: is Wolverines. Their battle cry is Wolverines. Like you know,
- 48:00Speaker 3: g I Joe was Yo Joe.
- 48:02Speaker 4: Theirs was Wolverines.
- 48:05Speaker 2: Okay, got it. And in the world of Scrubs, Elliott
- 48:08Speaker 2: knows this movie. I don't believe it, but I believe
- 48:11Speaker 2: I believe. I believe Turk knows that.
- 48:13Speaker 4: I don't believe that Turk would know it, so therefore
- 48:15Speaker 4: j D would know it, right.
- 48:16Speaker 2: But Elliott walks in like, oh, I forget the homework assignment,
- 48:19Speaker 2: Let's watch Red Dawn.
- 48:20Speaker 4: I'm like, come on, buddy, I'd love it.
- 48:22Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's also great again. You guys both throw
- 48:25Speaker 1: the gesture away and it's great when Zachie comes in
- 48:28Speaker 1: and goes you know Wolverines, and he just throws it
- 48:30Speaker 1: away and Sarah does too, and it's great.
- 48:32Speaker 2: You know, when I was first watching this episode, before
- 48:34Speaker 2: I got through it, I was like, what a dick
- 48:36Speaker 2: Turk is for inviting my newly ex girlfriend over to
- 48:40Speaker 2: do a homework as Simon at the fucking living room table.
- 48:45Speaker 4: Be done.
- 48:46Speaker 1: Yeah, But then he comes yeah, there's a great thing.
- 48:50Speaker 1: Later on at ten forty five that Donald does this
- 48:54Speaker 1: great thing where Sarah goes, you and I can still
- 48:57Speaker 1: hang out and Donald goes, no, he's my best friend.
- 49:00Speaker 1: Either you fix it or and then there's an ellipsis.
- 49:03Speaker 1: And for all of us who have had divorced friends
- 49:07Speaker 1: or friends who have broken up, it's the way Donald
- 49:11Speaker 1: lays it out. You can't have both. It's just it's
- 49:14Speaker 1: never you got to be friends with either or the wife.
- 49:18Speaker 1: You can't have both. It doesn't work.
- 49:20Speaker 2: People always choose a side, don't they.
- 49:23Speaker 3: You have to, Yeah, yeah, there's no in between. You
- 49:26Speaker 3: can't stay in between. You can't be like, she's my
- 49:28Speaker 3: friend and you're my friend.
- 49:30Speaker 2: Right right, I got it now now now when so
- 49:34Speaker 2: we what we learned is that Turk did it in
- 49:36Speaker 2: order to try and get them to be friends again, right, Well.
- 49:42Speaker 1: I think his intentions are really good, but it's so raw.
- 49:45Speaker 2: I mean, it's still so new, this breakup. You know,
- 49:47Speaker 2: It's like, yeah, but.
- 49:48Speaker 3: You guys are running to each running into each other.
- 49:51Speaker 3: Elliott and j D are running into each other every
- 49:54Speaker 3: day at work, and there's all of this animosity towards
- 49:58Speaker 3: each other.
- 49:59Speaker 1: It's how the show will.
- 50:00Speaker 2: I felt sad about it, you know, I have to say,
- 50:03Speaker 2: I guess I'm these old feelings of being so invested
- 50:06Speaker 2: in these characters came up, and of course, I'm sure
- 50:10Speaker 2: you know memories of times in my own life of
- 50:13Speaker 2: this stage of a relationship, and I don't know, I
- 50:16Speaker 2: was so invested that I genuinely was feeling sad for
- 50:20Speaker 2: these two characters and how they clearly love each other
- 50:23Speaker 2: so much, and as we learned in the series, they
- 50:25Speaker 2: ultimately choose each other. But but oh, that awkwardness of
- 50:29Speaker 2: of you know, of trying to be friends and having
- 50:33Speaker 2: mutual friends and working together. I mean, what a nightmare.
- 50:36Speaker 1: Yeah, but what you just said pays off in the
- 50:38Speaker 1: final before you guys go up on the roof and
- 50:40Speaker 1: throw watermelons. When you guys are on that cot, you're Zachi.
- 50:45Speaker 1: Your truth is that it made you genuinely sad and
- 50:51Speaker 1: it resonates. It absolutely jumps into the lens and it resonates,
- 50:55Speaker 1: and it's so lovely.
- 50:57Speaker 2: I think I had not so much.
- 50:58Speaker 1: There's nothing demand constrative, there's nothing showy. It's just this
- 51:03Speaker 1: guy sad and sad sucks. Sometimes.
- 51:05Speaker 2: I think that was easy to play because it was real,
- 51:08Speaker 2: and I think I had so much love for Sarah
- 51:10Speaker 2: and I just you know, I could just play in
- 51:14Speaker 2: my in my heart that we weren't going to be
- 51:17Speaker 2: friends anymore, and it was just easy to tap into,
- 51:19Speaker 2: you know.
- 51:19Speaker 1: Right, it showed it was very good.
- 51:24Speaker 3: I really you know, when in the beginning of the
- 51:26Speaker 3: episode when he said when j D says, my teacher died,
- 51:31Speaker 3: I was like, oh, this is this is going to
- 51:33Speaker 3: be the problem of the episode. And then when you know, Johnny,
- 51:36Speaker 3: when Cox goes into this rent, I was like, no,
- 51:38Speaker 3: this is the problem of the episode. Then how you
- 51:41Speaker 3: bring it full circle? It's always brought back to one
- 51:43Speaker 3: right and with our show. So at the end of
- 51:46Speaker 3: it all, you remind him, didn't you tell me about
- 51:49Speaker 3: your teacher that you know just passed away? How are
- 51:52Speaker 3: you going to deal with that, because I know you're
- 51:55Speaker 3: trying to hide it. What did you do when? What
- 51:57Speaker 3: did you do when you found out your teacher died?
- 52:00Speaker 3: That's right, you made a joke. That shit stings inside
- 52:03Speaker 3: and if you hold on to it, and if you
- 52:04Speaker 3: don't have an outlet, you wind up doing what I did.
- 52:07Speaker 4: You know what I mean.
- 52:08Speaker 3: And there's not a bunch of people at this hospital
- 52:10Speaker 3: that are going to protect you the way they protect me.
- 52:12Speaker 3: That's that's the honest of goodness truth. Yeah, we'll get
- 52:15Speaker 3: this shit out. You know, I was well said.
- 52:17Speaker 2: I believe that too. I mean, I feel like I
- 52:19Speaker 2: do that in life. I try and dissipate the emotion
- 52:23Speaker 2: by making a joke and then you're all, you know,
- 52:26Speaker 2: which is fine, it's a coping mechanism. But then you're
- 52:29Speaker 2: you're letting that shit fester and build up. And then
- 52:32Speaker 2: Johnny and Cox is saying, like, look what happens if
- 52:35Speaker 2: you let it build for three hundred and sixty four days?
- 52:37Speaker 2: You fucking destroy Franklin's lab.
- 52:40Speaker 1: And I wrote, I wrote, I wrote in my notebook
- 52:43Speaker 1: because I'd had about a twenty year, ongoing, twenty year
- 52:48Speaker 1: art crush on a Welsh poet named Dylan Thomas, and
- 52:52Speaker 1: I didn't have the spine to go down to the
- 52:54Speaker 1: writer's room and ask Billy if I could put this in.
- 52:57Speaker 1: But I did put it in the margins the poem
- 53:00Speaker 1: that do not go gently into that good night rage,
- 53:02Speaker 1: rage against the dying of the light. And that informs
- 53:05Speaker 1: everything I'm telling Zachi in that scene, that you don't
- 53:09Speaker 1: go gently into the good night rage, rage, rage against
- 53:13Speaker 1: the dying of the light. Oah, I get a chill.
- 53:15Speaker 1: And I wanted to say it to Zachie so bad,
- 53:17Speaker 1: but it was a little too esoteric. And but it's
- 53:20Speaker 1: underneath it.
- 53:21Speaker 2: It needs it, John, because it was underneath your whole performance.
- 53:24Speaker 1: It floats it. Yeah. And if you can get Dylan
- 53:27Speaker 1: Thomas to float something underneath what you're doing again, you're
- 53:31Speaker 1: not lying, You're telling your truth. Yeah.
- 53:33Speaker 2: I really like that you do that, John, the putting,
- 53:37Speaker 2: putting thoughts and inspiration in the margins and letting that
- 53:42Speaker 2: sort of exist underneath the scene. I think that's really
- 53:46Speaker 2: a smart technique.
- 53:48Speaker 1: It's completely selfish and self serving. It helps me. I
- 53:51Speaker 1: always find that if you can, since we're lying in
- 53:54Speaker 1: front of the lens, everything most of it's a lie.
- 53:57Speaker 1: In other words. I'm not doctor Cox, I'm not the guy.
- 54:00Speaker 1: I'm not Sergeant O Neil in platoon. I'm not I'm
- 54:03Speaker 1: not I'm some guy. I'm just the Irish jack yis.
- 54:06Speaker 1: And if you can, yeah, if you can reduce, if
- 54:10Speaker 1: you can reduce the frequency of the lie, whether it's
- 54:14Speaker 1: Oliver putting this through two weeks of boot camp or
- 54:17Speaker 1: or putting Dylan Thomas underneath underneath a particular beat that
- 54:22Speaker 1: reduces the lie. And if you can reduce the lie
- 54:25Speaker 1: to a certain frequency, then the lens doesn't suffer it
- 54:30Speaker 1: as a lie quite as much.
- 54:31Speaker 2: And I think, and I think genuinely this might be
- 54:33Speaker 2: a non sequitor, but for me, genuinely listen. You know
- 54:38Speaker 2: a lot of times actors will ask me for and
- 54:41Speaker 2: I'm sure this you guys get this as well. Young
- 54:44Speaker 2: actors ask you for advice or or and you try
- 54:46Speaker 2: and think of like something's accinct you can say, because
- 54:48Speaker 2: it's none of it's that easy. But when I do
- 54:51Speaker 2: try and say, the most basic thing that I've learned
- 54:54Speaker 2: is genuinely listening. If I'm if the camera's on me
- 55:00Speaker 2: and Johnny C playing Cox is saying all these things
- 55:03Speaker 2: to me, and I can genuinely listen. I'm not looking
- 55:05Speaker 2: in my periphery at the camera. I'm not looking at
- 55:08Speaker 2: the gel on the light that's about to fall. I'm
- 55:11Speaker 2: not distracted by something. I'm genuinely listening. Then I can't
- 55:14Speaker 2: help but react naturally as a human being would. And
- 55:18Speaker 2: that's not easy to do it. You can only I
- 55:21Speaker 2: find I could only do it in spurts, which hopefully
- 55:24Speaker 2: those spurts can be edited together into something good. But
- 55:28Speaker 2: that's the that's sort of my version of what you're saying,
- 55:31Speaker 2: is being as present as you can and genuinely listening.
- 55:35Speaker 1: Because you're telling the truth.
- 55:37Speaker 2: Yeah, and then we react. I remember when I was
- 55:39Speaker 2: I did this movie, The Last Kiss, and I was
- 55:41Speaker 2: I had a scene with Tom Wilkinson, a wonderful actor,
- 55:43Speaker 2: and it was one of those moments where this really
- 55:45Speaker 2: worked for me. He was the cameras were kind of
- 55:47Speaker 2: far back. I love that when when on the occasion
- 55:50Speaker 2: when they can be sort of a little bit far
- 55:51Speaker 2: away on longer lenses, and he's too and he was
- 55:54Speaker 2: just on the porch and he's giving me a speech
- 55:58Speaker 2: about his daughter, and I just remember being so present.
- 56:02Speaker 2: I didn't see the cameras. I just saw this man
- 56:05Speaker 2: talking to me and giving me advice about how to
- 56:07Speaker 2: deal with my troubled relationship, and I just felt I
- 56:11Speaker 2: was so in the moment that in Spurts, I was
- 56:14Speaker 2: able to just forget that it wasn't real, you know
- 56:17Speaker 2: what I mean?
- 56:18Speaker 4: No, I totally know what you mean.
- 56:19Speaker 3: When I did Gee's Tripping, I got stone with my
- 56:22Speaker 3: boy Dion right before a scene.
- 56:29Speaker 2: When I was in Homies Pomoni.
- 56:33Speaker 3: Oh, and there was we were at a dance at
- 56:38Speaker 3: a house party, and I was supposed to be dancing
- 56:40Speaker 3: with this girl at the house party, and I was
- 56:42Speaker 3: so stone that I forgot we were filming a damn movie.
- 56:45Speaker 3: You think this is bullshit, But I remembered my direction was.
- 56:49Speaker 2: I thought you were by the way, I just want
- 56:50Speaker 2: to stop for a second. I thought you were kidding
- 56:52Speaker 2: and it was hilarious, but you're serious. You got so
- 56:54Speaker 2: high you forgot you were doing a movie.
- 56:55Speaker 4: I forgot that we were making This is how.
- 56:59Speaker 2: I gotta see this movie.
- 57:00Speaker 3: Yeah, so we're in a scene and we're you know,
- 57:04Speaker 3: it's a house party, and we're dancing, and I'm dancing
- 57:07Speaker 3: with this girl, and I remembered my direction. My direction
- 57:10Speaker 3: is tell her to come with you and you guys exit.
- 57:14Speaker 3: So we're dancing and everything, and now I'm really fucking
- 57:17Speaker 3: in it. I'm looking around at the boys and shit,
- 57:22Speaker 3: oh you know what I mean. I'm waving to my
- 57:24Speaker 3: boy you know what I mean in the movie and
- 57:26Speaker 3: everything like that, and I remember Joe, oh, I'm supposed
- 57:29Speaker 3: to tell us something. So I whispered in the ear like, yo,
- 57:32Speaker 3: let's go to the other room. And she goes, okay,
- 57:35Speaker 3: let's go. And so we're exiting, and as I'm walking out,
- 57:38Speaker 3: I'm like, oh shit, I just pulled down. I'm just
- 57:43Speaker 3: what I did, you know what I mean? And I'm
- 57:45Speaker 3: looking at my boys like, yeah, look how I did it.
- 57:49Speaker 3: And then they said cut and I was like, oh no,
- 57:53Speaker 3: I didn't. I didn't, but you know, I didn't go
- 57:55Speaker 3: like we were making a movie. But it was like cut.
- 57:57Speaker 3: And we walked away and my boy was like.
- 57:59Speaker 4: Yo, it really like you was taken out of the
- 58:01Speaker 4: other room.
- 58:03Speaker 2: Oh my god, that's so funny.
- 58:07Speaker 1: Man.
- 58:07Speaker 2: So that would get me.
- 58:09Speaker 1: I would get hives if I ever found myself in
- 58:11Speaker 1: that situation. I would I might worry too much.
- 58:15Speaker 2: How often how often were you stoned while acting on
- 58:19Speaker 2: Scrubs a percentage of the time.
- 58:23Speaker 4: It's not It's not as high.
- 58:25Speaker 2: I go to add it to the Scrubs Wiki.
- 58:26Speaker 3: It's not as high as everybody, you know, as I
- 58:29Speaker 3: made it out to be. But there were times where
- 58:32Speaker 3: I came to work and I was like, fuck, I
- 58:36Speaker 3: did it in the morning. By the end of the day,
- 58:38Speaker 3: I'll be fine, dude.
- 58:40Speaker 4: I was probably I had a problem.
- 58:42Speaker 2: You know'll be funny if on the Scrubs Wiki with
- 58:44Speaker 2: each episode it has a little section where it says
- 58:47Speaker 2: how high Donald was during the filming of this episode.
- 58:50Speaker 2: You know, it has like a it has like a
- 58:52Speaker 2: red for very, there's like a there's like a there's
- 58:54Speaker 2: like a color system, like how dangerous the water is
- 58:56Speaker 2: at the beach.
- 58:57Speaker 4: Those those days are over, though, Those days over. But
- 59:00Speaker 4: I do remember.
- 59:01Speaker 3: I remember thinking, you know, there's so many actors that
- 59:04Speaker 3: are baked when they're working. And I'm sure there are
- 59:06Speaker 3: there are, you know what I mean. But it really
- 59:09Speaker 3: wasn't for me.
- 59:10Speaker 1: Let me tell you something. I'm gonna get us back
- 59:12Speaker 1: on track here at six Johnny Johnny.
- 59:15Speaker 2: If Johnny was always on the show, we'd be much
- 59:18Speaker 2: more on track.
- 59:19Speaker 1: Let me tell you, let me tell you something. The
- 59:21Speaker 1: todd shows up in eight oh six hilarious, and he
- 59:24Speaker 1: comes up from behind the couch and it's kind of creepy.
- 59:27Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a little crazy. The things he says to
- 59:31Speaker 4: her are.
- 59:31Speaker 1: Cey, it's a little creepy, I know.
- 59:34Speaker 2: But I laughed out loud when he said.
- 59:43Speaker 1: So, is it safe to assume Donald that at a
- 59:45Speaker 1: fifty six, when you do a very graceful jump up
- 59:48Speaker 1: onto the nurses station, that you are not, in fact
- 59:51Speaker 1: wearing silk boxers.
- 59:52Speaker 4: I am definitely not wearing silkboxers.
- 59:55Speaker 1: Do you wear do you wear anything out of your scrubs?
- 59:57Speaker 3: I did at the time because I was look, man,
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: I got a leaky o ring and so loose gasket.
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: Sometimes when you go to the bathroom and come back
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: and you got a little pea spot, it's embarrassing.
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: So I don't think that you could. I mean, I
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: don't think that it would be appropriate for you to
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: not have your your what your situation contained.
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: I'm sure there were people that put on their scrubs
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: at as Johnny's hand goes up, you.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: Free ball in your scrubs?
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: Do One time in the Philippines, we were we were
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: shooting a flick. And during boot camp I had to
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: go through a river is called a blue, and so
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: we had to go through a blue and hold our
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: weapons above our heads and then we got out the
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: other side. I took my fatigues off and I had
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: about nine leeches right near my power source.
- 1:00:51Speaker 8: And so I decided and then die wee that are
- 1:00:57Speaker 8: our commandant told us that they like warm, wet places
- 1:01:01Speaker 8: like under your arms and down in your crotch.
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: And I haven't worn underwear since nineteen eighty six.
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: Wow, And that's all it took. And that is all.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: You can't say, you can't preface it with that's all.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: That's what it took. Seven leeches, seven leeches near my
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: near my power so horse, I'm not no chance, Lance,
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: And how do.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: You pull them off? You just can't do you just
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: can you just pull a leach off? I've never had
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: a leech stock.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: Dale Dale came and he used like a cigarette butt
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: and like he'd burn him and pull him at the
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: same time. And it was very humiliating to take my
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: you know, to have all twenty four guys looking at,
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: you know, the Irish donkey with seven leeches. Wow, I'm
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: not getting any leeches near my I guess.
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: Jeans would be fine, but scrubs wouldn't work.
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: No gross even ge oh man, I couldn't do it
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: with my jeans. Too much chafing.
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: All right, should we get back to the episode.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: Guys, are you boxers or tidy? What do you? Guys?
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: I'm straight up boxers, dude. Whities can't happen.
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: No, no, I don't do teddy whities. But they're not
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: boxers like traditional boxers, minors sort of like clingy, tight
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: soft boxers. Okay, their their stance. If if I highly
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: recommend this brand s T A n C. They're not
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: a paid sponsor, but I'm.
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: Giving the stance like the socks.
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: Yes, they make really fun socks. But they also make
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: this like butter It's called like butter Undies.
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: Butter Undies by stance.
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: Yeah, there you go. There's a shout out for butter Undies.
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: Send Donald an XXXL every stance, folks.
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: I don't need an X. My waist isn't that big, dude?
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: Oh?
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: Quadru blecks.
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: Wow.
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: We got to get back to Kenny and Judy because
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: we haven't given them their due. Because the song, the
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: song He Turns Off is in fact the song that
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: then Sammy and Judy sing together.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: Acapella beautifully, so pretty, so pretty.
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: That's so tough to do. Also, I guess it.
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: Was, you know, they must to practice a lot.
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: They had to have practiced that because that's so like
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: even the way lock the cadence and everything was on fire,
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: you know what I mean. That had to They had.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: To remind everyone who's listening what the song was. It
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: was talk Dirty to Me, Oh, talk Dirty to Me? Yeah,
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: by poison.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: But they're not again, gosh, I'm beating a dead horse here,
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: But the two of them are. They're not showing off,
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: they're not putting it up on a bill They're not
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: putting it up on a billboard. They're so great, they're
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: so graceful, and they're not doing can you believe this shit?
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: Because Sammy never does that and Judy is the master
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: of just navigating her way through a scene, and the
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: two of them together are so money and that thing
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: is just so lovely. And then the same says I
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: love you.
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: I dropped.
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: Yeah, so good.
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: It really made me miss him me too. I had
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: just one of those moments of going fucking hell on
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: too soon. This guy is so funny and so talented,
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: and I just wish more people got to know how
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: talented he was. I mean, he was a successful, working actor,
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: but I I you know, I watch him in this
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: and I go, I just I wish everyone in the
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: world knew how genius this guy.
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: His abilities. Man, he's just had so many great abilities,
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: you know what I mean? He could make you did
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: you know problem?
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: Did you guys at the end of the show actually
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: get to throw things off the roof?
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: I don't remember I did any of that.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: Because I remember that being a kind of a nightmare with.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: It also dates the show with Letterman talking about let
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: you want to throw stuff off the roof?
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: Like Letterman. Yeah, it's like Letterman hasn't been on for
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: what ten years now?
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: Well, for those of you who are too young to
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: or didn't ever watch Letterman, he would often throw large
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: objects off the roof of the Ed Sullivan Theater.
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: And was this before he moved to CBS.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: No, I think it was a bit he did for
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: the whole his whole thing. I don't remember. Yeah, I
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: don't remember, but but I think we did. I have
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: a weird memory of feeling like it was kind of
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: dangerous It's probably something they wouldn't let us do today,
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: with all the with with the doubt, with the increase
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: in set safety. Because the wall of that roof wasn't
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: incredibly high and we were hurling watermelons over the side.
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: I don't know that would be approved by by HR
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: this at this day and age.
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: By the way, my Bill cosby that that made me
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: laugh out loud, and I.
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: Think it made me laugh. I think it made me
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: laugh because of how bad my bill.
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it was like it was turned up to eleven.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: It was, it was turned up to eleven.
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: I think.
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: Yeah, it was almost like you were doing an impression
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: of of Eddie Murphy, of Eddie Murphy doing his impression.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: Now why pudding. I didn't even that was such a
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: non sequitor, like we put pudding in medical gloves.
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: And then toss them off the roof.
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: Yeah, and then you went into a I wonder if
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: that was in the script. Do you think I was
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: in the script or you just riff that.
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: No, that was definitely in the script. We were putting
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: off the roof. They definitely put it in the show.
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: I would like to talk to you about it.
- 1:06:13Speaker 4: Would like to talk to you.
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: About some of the things you've been doing in your shop.
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: About some of the things that you do and your
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: shop now.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: And then and then and then Neil at the end saying, oh.
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: Yeah, like the clocalypse now right, I think, uh, that
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: was the I learned from Scrubs wiki that was the
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: first time Neil's ever been alone in a scene.
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: Really, Oh my goodness, Yeah, that's right.
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: That's wicked. They really have.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: But he gets Billy. Billy puts him alone more and
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: more as the when him building that squirrel thing in
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: his garage, and I think that I think gets more
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: and more alone.
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think that this was a shift to Neil,
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: like I think he entered the world of a regular
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: cast member around here.
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: And there is an episode where Neil's not going to
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: be on this show in the first season, and that's
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: how they got around him not being a regular. If
- 1:07:14Speaker 3: I really, if I recall correctly, let's ask a Bill.
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: We can ask Bill right now.
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: That's a good ask Bill, Go ahead, Donald, ask Bill
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: Bill coma.
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: If my memory serves me correctly, isn't there an episode
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: where there's no janitor?
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: And if so, was that related to tiptoeing around his contract?
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: Because he would have had to have been a regular
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: of some sort. Do not say five six seven eight?
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: Bill Well shut it down.
- 1:07:41Speaker 7: Neil Flynn did not have to test for the part
- 1:07:43Speaker 7: of the janitor, so he was not listed as a regular.
- 1:07:48Speaker 7: You know, I just cast him as a guest star
- 1:07:49Speaker 7: in the pilot with the intention of putting him in
- 1:07:51Speaker 7: every episode, And then we did put him in every
- 1:07:53Speaker 7: episode as a recur guy, and at the very end
- 1:07:57Speaker 7: made him. You know, I was able to convince that
- 1:08:00Speaker 7: Networks they liked him a lot, that we needed to
- 1:08:01Speaker 7: pay to make him a regular the second year. Originally
- 1:08:05Speaker 7: they only wanted him in a maximum of four episodes,
- 1:08:10Speaker 7: but I was like four, you gotta have him in, like.
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: Five six seven eight. Stop it, Dan off this fucking guy.
- 1:08:18Speaker 4: Let's take a break.
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: We'll be right back after.
- 1:08:20Speaker 9: These fine words. High high, Hi, We're back in. Hello,
- 1:08:32Speaker 9: back quick, after a quick pe break, We're back.
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: Joel introduced us.
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: It's Jeremy.
- 1:08:39Speaker 10: Lee nailed it.
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: There's our Jeremy. You got the Oprah introduction. It's a
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: it's a sacred right that only Jeremy.
- 1:08:48Speaker 4: Are you in an office?
- 1:08:50Speaker 10: I'm in my home office right now.
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: Yeah, Well, Jeremy it's like office baby.
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: Okay, Oprah, can you chill for two seconds?
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: Jeremy will do that.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: My God, do you get a car? You get a car?
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: You get a car. Jeremy tell us you have a
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: special special day to be on the podcast because the legendary,
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: the living legend, Johnny c McGinley has joined us. So,
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: who do you have a question for three of the
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: cast members of the TV show Scrubs.
- 1:09:18Speaker 11: I do have a question with if I don't mind,
- 1:09:21Speaker 11: just a quick background, I work with children with autism,
- 1:09:24Speaker 11: and so we actually did research at my wonderful company
- 1:09:29Speaker 11: and nonprofit Autism Partnership Foundation to research if we could
- 1:09:34Speaker 11: change a kid with autism to like social things, not
- 1:09:37Speaker 11: just toys or food. And so we actually stole from
- 1:09:40Speaker 11: an episode that you guys did and got children to
- 1:09:44Speaker 11: actually enjoy the social aspect of that instead of their
- 1:09:47Speaker 11: favorite toy. So I guess my first question is Wow. Yeah,
- 1:09:50Speaker 11: and it's published in a journal so you can look
- 1:09:52Speaker 11: at it.
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: Hungry chicken at all.
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: That's incredible. Good for you.
- 1:09:56Speaker 11: I guess the first question is who came up with
- 1:09:58Speaker 11: the hungry chicken? Because we use it all the time.
- 1:10:01Speaker 4: Wow, I don't know.
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: I think that's Bill Lawrence that came up with one
- 1:10:04Speaker 3: of the writers, right am I?
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: Right? Guys, Oh god, if you if you throw this
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: to Billy, he's going to do a five.
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: Now, you know, we got to limit him. We got
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: to limit him. He doesn't get too many. That is
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: a good question. I have no idea. I think it
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: must have been one of the writers. I don't know.
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: Yeah, we gotta throw it to Bill.
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: So wait, just explain a little bit more. The children
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: who have autism, you say they would they would rather
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: interact with a toy, and you use this to give
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: them a way to interact without having a toy involved.
- 1:10:34Speaker 11: We both think like children thought to them only like
- 1:10:36Speaker 11: toys or only want food, and they only use that
- 1:10:38Speaker 11: to motivate them.
- 1:10:39Speaker 10: But we know we can motivate them.
- 1:10:41Speaker 11: Socially too, because they need to be social and it's
- 1:10:43Speaker 11: a social disorder. So we would take the hungry chicken
- 1:10:47Speaker 11: and we would have do it with a friend of
- 1:10:49Speaker 11: theirs and then see if after we did it with
- 1:10:52Speaker 11: them they would pick that or.
- 1:10:54Speaker 10: Favorite or their favorite toy.
- 1:10:56Speaker 11: And so we were able to show like by really
- 1:10:59Speaker 11: selling it and really and a lot of hungry chicken
- 1:11:01Speaker 11: that they would pick a social motivator instead of like
- 1:11:05Speaker 11: food or M and MS, which is.
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: That's amazing. Well, now, I really wish I could take
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: credit for inventing that, because that's a very inspiring story. Wow,
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: do you have another question for us?
- 1:11:17Speaker 10: Yeah, I guess I do.
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: So.
- 1:11:20Speaker 11: You've talked a little bit about the music on the show,
- 1:11:23Speaker 11: and I just think the music on the show is great.
- 1:11:25Speaker 11: And Zach just to say, I think the Garden State
- 1:11:29Speaker 11: soundtrack is one of the best soundtracks ever.
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: It's a mixtape. Hold on, it's a mix tape.
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: It's a mixtape. I want a Grammy for moment.
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: Yeah, but you yeah, you want to mix tape Grammy.
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: You want to mix Well, I didn't even know they
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: had a mixtape Grammy, but it turns out they do.
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: And you won that ship I did, I did. You've
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: held it.
- 1:11:48Speaker 6: I have.
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: I got, I got the I got the I got
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: the fucking first award in my egot. I didn't think
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: it was going to be my first. I thought it
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: might be my last.
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: If you get when you get the E got, you
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: already got the Grammy, right.
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: I thought I was gonna have to do like a
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: book on.
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: Tape, Jeremy, do you know what at is? I?
- 1:12:17Speaker 10: Of course I mean Grammy Oscar Tony.
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: Yes, sir y yes, but thank you, thank you, Jeremy.
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: I I donald ruined my my praise from you, and
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: I want to thank you.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: It was it was shocking to everyone involved that that
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: soundtrack was so successful, but I really appreciate it.
- 1:12:33Speaker 4: It really is a good soundtrack.
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: Though.
- 1:12:36Speaker 11: Do you guys just like already have a song in
- 1:12:37Speaker 11: mind you know when that episode comes, or do you
- 1:12:41Speaker 11: listen to a song and you know, oh, that'll be
- 1:12:43Speaker 11: a great song to add to a soundtrack one day.
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: I think what happens is there There were some writers
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: that were involved. There was of course Christa Miller who
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: plays Jordan and is Bill's wife, and she's very very
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: into it and very good at it, and Bill and
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: then the ended, and then I think what happens is
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: you sort of this is the way I do it
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: for my films as well. You sort of build a
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: big ass playlist of potential songs. You feel like, oh,
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: these would be great for a montage, or oh, this
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: is a really moving song for somewhere you don't really know,
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: and then when you get in the edit, you start
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: to go, let's try that song, and then you see
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: and I always jokingly have a goosebump detector. You can
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: listen to twenty five songs and they're like, Okay, that's okay,
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: and then all of a sudden you watch it and
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: you just get goosebumps up and down your arm and
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: you go, Okay, well, that's obviously a contender. And that's
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: a lot of trial and error, a lot of trial
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: and error. And these days it's even harder because so
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: many people are doing it that when I made my
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: film Wish I was here, we would try it and
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: we'd fall in love with the song, and then we'd
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: look up online. I was like, oh no, it's been
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: used in Gray's Anatomy, It's been used on this It's
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: been used in this movie. So it's even harder now
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: because you got to find music that hasn't been done
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: to death in being used with film. Wow.
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: I think a really a really good example that is
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: Joshi is your friend Joshi and the different music he
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: brought to the show Zechi was just astonishing.
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: Yeah, Joshua Raydon was a a is an artist that
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: we love a lot. And Johnny I don't even know
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: if you know this trivia that his song Winter, which
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: is in that famous episode where we where we lose
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: Brendan Fraser, was the first song you'd ever written.
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: Yeah, wow, thank you. He wasn't the one hit wonder dude.
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: Well this many years yeah, this many years later.
- 1:14:34Speaker 10: I loved his cover on Alex inc That first episode.
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: Just oh of Bob Dylan, Thank you. You're you're the
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: so you're the guy that was watching Alex Sink. Thank
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: you so much.
- 1:14:44Speaker 11: My wife and I who's really sad she couldn't be here,
- 1:14:46Speaker 11: but she's actually a second year resident, so she's off
- 1:14:48Speaker 11: at the hospital.
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: Oh wow, yeah, well, thank you, and thank you for
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: being such a fan of of all things Scrubs and
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: Alex Sink and Garden State.
- 1:14:59Speaker 10: I really shit that and all you guys guys are amazing.
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: Man, you don't even know my name. That was Jeremy.
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: No.
- 1:15:08Speaker 11: We were just watching Can't Hardly Wait. My wife is
- 1:15:11Speaker 11: not from America. We were watching Can't Hardly Wait, and
- 1:15:15Speaker 11: I forgot you were in it.
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, that's the best way to That's great,
- 1:15:19Speaker 4: that's great. It was right, it was going right. And
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: then he's.
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: Like He's like. I turned to my wife and I
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: was like, did you remember that Tay Diggs is in
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: this movie?
- 1:15:33Speaker 4: All right, Jeremy give it up.
- 1:15:35Speaker 3: Thundrous applause Dan for Jeremy.
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: Jeremy, stay safe and keep doing the beautiful work you're
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: doing with with autistic children. And thank you so much
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: for the kind words.
- 1:15:45Speaker 10: Oh, thank you so much for having me. Hey, we
- 1:15:47Speaker 10: appreciate it.
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: Thanks, buddy. Well, guys, I think we did it. We've
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: gone it. We've gone a long. The people seem to
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: love it. Whenever I say I've gotten a lot of
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: chatter on my Insta saying stop, saying you've gone too long.
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: We don't want you, guys to stop, but we want to.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: You know, I had a great acting teacher. He used
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: to say, give him ten minutes less than they want.
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: Was this great acting teacher that you have ever on Scrubs?
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: Yes? By the way, did you know that?
- 1:16:11Speaker 4: Dude?
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: Come on, man, I thought you may have forgotten with
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: your stoner break.
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: Who did who did? Who was your acting teacher?
- 1:16:17Speaker 4: And who did I had?
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: I had the privilege to work with Zach's acting teacher
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: though David Downs.
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: David Downs I work.
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: And who did David play.
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: He played the one whose kid was in a coma
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: or broke his Uh, I don't, I don't remember.
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: I directed the episode. Was this wasn't the epic Heather
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: Graham one?
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: Was it?
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: No, it wasn't.
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: It was like he broke his son, either broke his
- 1:16:43Speaker 3: back or I I forget what it was. But you know,
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: he asked me to be honest with him, right, and
- 1:16:50Speaker 3: he was like his one line. I remember the part
- 1:16:53Speaker 3: of the interaction we had. He said to me, do
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: you shave your head because it's cool or because you're bold?
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: And I go, yeah, it was a really good episode.
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: We'll have to figure out what it was. But yeah,
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: David Downs was my acting teacher at Northwestern and also
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: a beautiful actor, and so I had him do a
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: guest star on Scrubs.
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: Yes. I always feel like one of the great gifts
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: of being mister Bulger, sorry, either a hit show or
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: producing a movie is throwing talented friends, not just random friends,
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: talented friends, putting them on your piece. And I did
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: it with a half a dozen actors on Scrubs, And
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: then if people are right, I do it all the
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: time with the movies i'm producing too.
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: Yeah, you have some very talented friends.
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: Yeah, you've done quite a posse of Sorry, I just
