- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, Shano, it's always difficult during my weeks to come
- 0:03Speaker 1: up with something juicy to talk about, but Matt Rulster
- 0:06Speaker 1: gave us plenty of content the other day when he
- 0:08Speaker 1: said that Anthony Calandria is getting tampered with by SEC schools.
- 0:13Speaker 1: What do you know about this?
- 0:15Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I know that it happens everywhere now
- 0:19Speaker 2: because of agents. I mean, agents can talk to schools
- 0:24Speaker 2: and general managers. It's not... players talking to schools it's
- 0:29Speaker 2: agents talking to schools so um yeah it's not i
- 0:33Speaker 2: mean i'm not surprised because he's played well at times
- 0:36Speaker 2: and he grew up in florida i mean there's definitely
- 0:40Speaker 2: going to be a market for him uh but that
- 0:43Speaker 2: said i think nebraska you know he's he's enjoyed his
- 0:46Speaker 2: time here and and you know they've done everything they'll
- 0:49Speaker 2: do everything possible to to get him re-signed and They've
- 0:53Speaker 2: got him relatively for a bargain based on what you
- 0:57Speaker 2: see out there. I'm sure there's going to be a
- 1:00Speaker 2: pretty good new deal coming his way if he comes
- 1:02Speaker 2: back to Nebraska for his fifth year.
- 1:04Speaker 1: He's got another year of eligibility. It reminds me a
- 1:07Speaker 1: little bit of that blockbuster trade years ago between the
- 1:10Speaker 1: Cowboys and the Vikings when Dallas shipped Herschel Walker off
- 1:14Speaker 1: to the Vikings in exchange for a bunch of draft
- 1:16Speaker 1: choices that later helped them win the Super Bowl, several
- 1:19Speaker 1: Super Bowls. And it strikes me that in this case,
- 1:22Speaker 1: with the money that Anthony Calandria is going to command
- 1:25Speaker 1: if his season continues as it has, you could get
- 1:29Speaker 1: five players for what they're going to pay him. And
- 1:31Speaker 1: with Trey Taylor coming, how valuable, how important is it
- 1:34Speaker 1: for Nebraska to keep Anthony Calandria if $ 2 million or
- 1:38Speaker 1: $ 3 million is the price tag?
- 1:41Speaker 2: I'd say it's really important to seeing... how much young
- 1:45Speaker 2: quarterbacks have struggled in the SEC and the Big Ten.
- 1:48Speaker 2: I mean, look at Dylan Royola. Look at Arch Manning.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Look at Bryce Underwood. I mean, you can go down
- 1:54Speaker 2: the line of you put these younger guys in as freshmen,
- 1:58Speaker 2: and it doesn't always work out. I mean, if you
- 2:00Speaker 2: have the luxury to develop and let a guy like
- 2:04Speaker 2: Trey Taylor learn, and that's, I believe, what the Taylor
- 2:07Speaker 2: family prefers to us as well. I mean, they're Unlike,
- 2:10Speaker 2: the Riolas wanted to come in and play right away.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Nebraska could have had Kyle McCord, and they weren't able
- 2:16Speaker 2: to take him because obviously they took Riola, and the
- 2:20Speaker 2: Riolas wanted to be the starter day one, where in
- 2:23Speaker 2: this situation, I truly believe the Taylors are okay. with
- 2:27Speaker 2: obviously Calandria playing another year and Trey learning and developing
- 2:31Speaker 2: underneath him. Just because the data shows true freshmen coming
- 2:34Speaker 2: in and playing, it's not really a sustainable deal. You
- 2:38Speaker 2: just don't see a lot of success with them anymore
- 2:40Speaker 2: in these two conferences particularly.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Even with three relatively winnable games, well, relatively, completely winnable games,
- 2:48Speaker 1: and a whole spring and fall camp to prepare him?
- 2:52Speaker 2: Yeah, again... show me where it's happening now. I mean, like,
- 2:57Speaker 2: how many true freshmen are coming in and doing well
- 3:00Speaker 2: right now? It's just, you're playing against 23, 22-year-old grown men.
- 3:04Speaker 2: A lot of these guys in past years would be
- 3:08Speaker 2: in the NFL, and they now choose to stay in
- 3:10Speaker 2: college an extra year or two to make more money. So,
- 3:15Speaker 2: I would say, I mean, the depth of college football,
- 3:17Speaker 2: the quality of player in college football has not been
- 3:20Speaker 2: this good in a long time, if ever, because of NIL,
- 3:24Speaker 2: which makes it that much harder for true freshmen to
- 3:26Speaker 2: come in and be immediate, big-time impact players.
- 3:29Speaker 1: All right, big guy. Care to tell us who you
- 3:32Speaker 1: think which SEC schools would be, you know, kicking tires
- 3:37Speaker 1: around Anthony Calandria?
- 3:39Speaker 2: It's really hard to say. I mean, Ole Miss, I'm sure,
- 3:43Speaker 2: is going to need a quarterback after Turnabout Chambliss is done.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I'm sure he'd look pretty good with Josh Heupel's offense.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 3:52Speaker 2: You can guess. He's from the state of Florida. I
- 3:55Speaker 2: often wonder why Florida State, you know, they wanted him
- 3:58Speaker 2: last year, but I'm sure Florida, I mean, you just
- 4:02Speaker 2: don't know, I mean, who it is exactly, but there's
- 4:05Speaker 2: a lot of good guesses you can make.
- 4:07Speaker 1: All right, big guy, thanks. That's KFB Husker Info Strongman
- 4:09Speaker 1: Sean Callen.
