- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle talk Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in Welcome back
- 0:16to Tabernacle talk. Today we are looking at Psalm
- 0:18113 and this begins several psalms that are known as the
- 0:23halal psalms. These would be songs of praise
- 0:26to God and these specific psalms, the Hello Psalms, which
- 0:30I believe goes from Psalm 113 down to about Psalm 118, if my
- 0:37memory serves correctly, these would be psalms that would be
- 0:40sung each Passover season. So even over these next few
- 0:45weeks, as we're looking at Psalms 11314151617 and I believe
- 0:5218, we're going to come at them not just from the angle of the
- 0:57amazing things that are written in there because they're the
- 1:01word of God, but we're also going to be looking at them in
- 1:04recognition of the fact that this was what Jesus sang the
- 1:08week of his death. We often think about people's
- 1:12last words and how important those could be, the insight into
- 1:17what is really ultimately important in life as we consider
- 1:21people's last words. And so that's kind of what we're
- 1:24going to be looking at over the next.
- 1:25I believe it's five weeks, might be 6 weeks before we begin going
- 1:30actually to daily episodes once more as we walk through some
- 1:34line, Psalm 119 and then from there to the end of book 5 of
- 1:38Psalms. But here let's read through
- 1:41Psalm 113, bearing in mind this is a Psalm likely of David, but
- 1:47then a song that would be sung during each Passover over the
- 1:51course of centuries, and that Jesus himself would have sang
- 1:55the week of his death with his disciples and those that were
- 1:59accompanying him. Verse one.
- 2:02Hallelujah, that is, praise the Lord, Give praise, servants of
- 2:07Yahweh. Praise the name of Yahweh.
- 2:11Let the name of Yahweh be blessed both now and forever,
- 2:15from the rising of the sun to its setting.
- 2:18Let the name of Yahweh be praised.
- 2:22Yahweh is exalted above all the nations, His glory above the
- 2:26heavens. Who is like Yahweh, our God, the
- 2:30one enthroned on high, who Stoops down to look on the
- 2:34heavens and the earth. He raises the poor from the dust
- 2:38and lifts the needy from the trash heap in order to seat them
- 2:42with nobles. With the nobles of His people,
- 2:45He gives the childless woman a household, making her the joyful
- 2:50mother of children. Hallelujah.
- 2:55All right, so just a little Psalm that we have for today,
- 2:58but I think there's several things that can encourage and
- 3:01and challenge our hearts and our lives.
- 3:04So let's begin first by looking at this section here, verses one
- 3:08through 3 talking about praising the name of Yahweh, the name of
- 3:13the Lord. And then we'll see in verses 4
- 3:15through 9 why we should praise the Lord.
- 3:18But first, the command, what we are instructed to do, that is
- 3:22today you've got a mission and your mission is to obey.
- 3:26Verses one through 3, So he says first Hallelujah, praise the
- 3:31Lord, to praise him, to speak well about God, to express
- 3:36gratitude to him, to extol how wonderful and how amazing he is.
- 3:42Verses 4 through 9 give an example of what it looks like to
- 3:46praise the Lord. Sometimes we just say that as an
- 3:50expression that is itself, in our estimation, praising the
- 3:53Lord. So if I say Hallelujah, we might
- 3:56say, Oh yeah, Brian's praising when the truth is I'm just
- 4:00telling other people to praise is me.
- 4:03Saying Hallelujah isn't necessarily a praise in and of
- 4:06itself, but here he's giving the instruction, Praise the Lord,
- 4:09give praise. Servants of Yahweh.
- 4:13Our relationship with God is not simply friends, though we are
- 4:19friends of God. Praise the Lord through both the
- 4:22testimony of what Jesus says, that because he has told us the
- 4:26mind and will and heart and love of God, that we are not merely
- 4:31his servants, we are also his friends.
- 4:33But our baseline relationship with God is that we are his
- 4:37servants. We are the ones that obey Him
- 4:40even as we think of his name, the Lord, that we are ones that
- 4:44are subservient to him. We do as IT instructs.
- 4:48We don't have OK, God, I've got my will and my will is pretty
- 4:53good. And so if you would just listen
- 4:55to me and sometimes we go along with what my plan is instead of
- 4:59your plan, then you know, if we do 5050 and half the time you do
- 5:04what you want in my life and half the time we do what I want
- 5:07with my life. We, we tend, even if we don't
- 5:11stay that overtly. That's how we behave.
- 5:14It's how we think. We we assume that God's goodness
- 5:18is based on how much he aligns with our vision of what our life
- 5:24should entail and of the, if you will, riches that we should
- 5:30enjoy the health that we have unencumbered by difficulties.
- 5:34We think as long as God aligns with my vision for my life, he
- 5:38is good. And when he doesn't align from
- 5:40my vision with my life, well, I kind of have to trust him
- 5:43because he's not being very good right now.
- 5:44No, no, no, my friends, we are the servants.
- 5:47He is the Lord. He's the one that calls the
- 5:49shots in our life and the shots that He calls, they are good
- 5:52shots. Now we can, along with Christ in
- 5:55the garden, we can pray, Father, not my will, but your will be
- 5:59done. And we can certainly pray that
- 6:01recognizing that we have a will and that we can ask of God, but
- 6:06recognize fundamentally we are not friends, pals, buddies, each
- 6:13kind of eye. And for what are we going to do
- 6:14today? No, we are servants called to
- 6:17obey our heavenly Master. And so this heavenly master we
- 6:21are called to give praise to and to talk about how great he is.
- 6:26The end of verse one praise the name of Yahweh.
- 6:29Yahweh obviously is that covenant name of God.
- 6:33It is what he told to Moses that when Moses has OK well who am I
- 6:38saying sent me to release the children of Israel from Egypt
- 6:43and God said Yahweh I am tell them I am has sent me to you and
- 6:52this I am Yahweh. He is the God that is all
- 6:55self-sufficient. He doesn't need anything from
- 6:59us. If we never gave him worship, if
- 7:01we never never gave him adoration, if we never gave him
- 7:05our love, he would be just fine. He doesn't require anything from
- 7:09us. He's not like the gods that so
- 7:11many people worshipped back in these times, where the God would
- 7:16be incapable of staving off famine or infertility or
- 7:23terrible storms if you did not offer sacrifices to that God.
- 7:28No, you always completely different.
- 7:29You always doesn't need anything from his people.
- 7:32Jesus does not require anything from anyone else.
- 7:37Anything that we bring is simply in free joy and relationship and
- 7:43love with crime. But He does not require anything
- 7:47from us in order for Him to exist or to be adored.
- 7:51He has been adored and loved and respected all throughout the
- 7:55ages past, throughout all of created history by the angels
- 8:00that surround the throne worshipping and saying holy,
- 8:03holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.
- 8:06The whole earth is full of His glory.
- 8:08He has received worship and adoration, and He has received
- 8:11love from the Father and from the Spirit throughout all ages
- 8:16past. And as there's been that
- 8:17community of love within the Godhead, within our triune God,
- 8:23there has been love, there's been worship, there's been all
- 8:27of the things. Humans are not needed by God.
- 8:32We are wanted and beloved by God and man.
- 8:35What a better relationship that that is.
- 8:37If God had to have something from us, it would be
- 8:40transactional. But whatever path we choose, it
- 8:43does not affect our God. It doesn't change who He is.
- 8:49So let's worship Him. Let's love him as a result of
- 8:52it. Let us praise His name.
- 8:55We can think certainly in the Old Testament you have that
- 8:57name, the Lord Yahweh I am that's used over 7000 times in
- 9:02the Old Testament. And then you can think in the
- 9:04New Testament of the name of Jesus, as we're told by Paul in
- 9:08Philippians chapter 2, that Jesus is the name above every
- 9:12name. That at the name of Jesus, every
- 9:14knee will bow with things in heaven and things in earth and
- 9:17things under the earth. And that every tongue will
- 9:19confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the
- 9:23Father. And there Paul even quoting from
- 9:25Isaiah where he says that the name of Yahweh will be praised
- 9:31by all people. Everyone will confess that
- 9:33Yahweh is God and Lord. And so here you have both from
- 9:37the Old Testament and the New Testament, whether you think of
- 9:41the great I am, or if you think of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God
- 9:45who took away the sins of the world, our God, the God of, if
- 9:49you will, 1000 names is the one absolutely worthy to be praised.
- 9:55I'm going to do 2 things for this episode.
- 9:57I'm going to link in there's a song by Sovereign Grace Music
- 10:01that's on Psalm 113. And so I'll link in that one.
- 10:04And then there's a song written by Phil Wickham called 1000
- 10:09Names and it just sings through a bunch of names of God.
- 10:12It doesn't sing through 1000 names, but it's a lot of them.
- 10:16And so I'm, I'm going to link that as well, just to give you
- 10:18guys some practical as you're praising the Lord.
- 10:21Those songs will help you to do exactly that.
- 10:24All right, I got to hasten on a little bit.
- 10:26I got, I got kind of bogged down.
- 10:27Verse 1 is great. Verse #2 Let the name of Yahweh
- 10:30be blessed both now and forever. God's name is going to be
- 10:34praised for forever. So let's start praising Him even
- 10:38right now. Then verse #3 from the rising of
- 10:41the sun to its setting, let the name of Yahweh be praised.
- 10:45I saw a one of my study Bibles or something was talking about
- 10:50this particular verse. I think it was the the New
- 10:53English translation Bible study notes said this.
- 10:56The talking about from the rising of the sun to its
- 10:58setting. This isn't saying OK during the
- 11:01daytime, praise God. It's saying from everywhere that
- 11:05the sun rises to everywhere that the sun sets.
- 11:08The Lord's name is to be praised.
- 11:09So it's not temporal, it's spatial.
- 11:11So it's saying all across the world the name of Yahweh is to
- 11:16be praised. There is no location that you
- 11:19can go, there's no time of day that you can go where it is not
- 11:23appropriate to praise the name of God.
- 11:26All right, so that's our call to action in verses one through 3
- 11:31is to praise the Lord, and we are his servants.
- 11:34He has a name that's worthy to be praised, to be uplifted.
- 11:39So then verses 4 through 9 say, well, why?
- 11:42And this talks a little bit about who God is, what he has
- 11:44done, what he has promised even for us, and why we should praise
- 11:48him. Verse 4, Yahweh is exalted above
- 11:51all the nations, His glory above the heavens.
- 11:55So God is more powerful. I'll, I'll put it into today's
- 11:58vernacular. God is higher, with greater
- 12:03authority, greater might, greater power than Russia, than
- 12:08North Korea, than China, than the United States, than any
- 12:12other, if you will, world power that you might have.
- 12:15I know there's all sorts of craziness happening in our
- 12:17world. God has more authority and more
- 12:21power and a fuller jurisdiction than any individual nation or
- 12:27coalition of nations. God is better.
- 12:29You don't have to fear the US. You don't have to fear Russia.
- 12:34You don't have to fear China because we have of a God who is
- 12:39greater and above and mightier than all.
- 12:43He says His glory is above the heavens, that is the skies.
- 12:47Think back to Genesis one. In the beginning, God created
- 12:50the heavens and the earth, that is, the skies and the land, the
- 12:54realm above and the realm below. And so God is exalted and
- 13:00glorified even far above the skies, as we think of the
- 13:05expanse of space and the stars and comets and and meteoroids
- 13:11and black holes and all of that. God's glory is greater even than
- 13:18the cosmos. So verse 5 is the appropriate
- 13:21response to this. Who is like Yahweh, our God, the
- 13:25one enthroned on high, who Stoops down to look on the
- 13:30heavens and the earth. We have to look up to even see
- 13:35things here on Earth like the mountains or you know, the the
- 13:39lower amount, lower layers of clouds we have to send, we have
- 13:45to send rockets into space for 50 years in order to see some
- 13:51aspects of the edge of our universe.
- 13:54But God, he has to, if you will humble himself.
- 13:58He has to go down a step in order to see the vast expanse of
- 14:04his creation. He is not a small thing in a big
- 14:09universe. No, no, no.
- 14:10He is the big thing. He is the largest, the most
- 14:15glorified. He is the greatest being we
- 14:18could ever imagine. And he Stoops down to look on
- 14:23the heavens, if you will. It's it's almost belittling, you
- 14:28know, you think I, I have my toddlers and when I am talking
- 14:33with them, you know, I might get down on a knee.
- 14:35So I can, you know, be face to face with B or EV and, and talk
- 14:39with them a little bit, see what they're trying to say.
- 14:42And if you will, that's kind of a humbling thing.
- 14:44You know, if I kneel in front of another person, we don't really
- 14:48do that anymore because it is belittling.
- 14:52And so when I interact with, you know, someone that's older than
- 14:55me, I'm not kneeling to them or bowing to them anymore.
- 14:59But it says God Stoops down to look on the heavens and the
- 15:04earth, but he's not just looking at all of the cosmos that he has
- 15:08created. Instead, in verse 789, he cares
- 15:12about individual people and he cares about the people that
- 15:15everyone else looks down on. He cares about the people that
- 15:18we go, well, you know that that person, yeah, they're in a rough
- 15:23situation, but that's probably their fault and I don't have to
- 15:28care about them. But God does.
- 15:30The 1 enthroned above the heavens, verse 7, he says he
- 15:35raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the
- 15:39trash heap, from the landfills of this world.
- 15:44God raises the poor and lifts the needy.
- 15:48I'll say this just because there's whole mess of things
- 15:51going on right now even in the United States with various
- 15:56budgeting bills and things like EBT and SNAP benefits and things
- 16:01like that. As someone that in the past has
- 16:04had to be on EBT benefits or food benefits, not as a result
- 16:09of a lack of work, but due to the expensiveness of the world
- 16:14that we are in right now. I have such a burden in my heart
- 16:20seeing sometimes even professed Christians who dried and despise
- 16:28the poor and the needy. And here's why.
- 16:31Because God doesn't do that here.
- 16:33Talking about the great God that is greater than all of the
- 16:37expanse of the universe. It says he cares about the poor
- 16:41and the needy. And I wonder today, do you have
- 16:44that same love and that same care for those that are
- 16:48disenfranchised, for those that have undergone horrible
- 16:51hardships in their life, that have found themselves in a
- 16:54situation that you would not wish for yourself or any family
- 16:58member of yours, but they are on incredibly hard times.
- 17:03Do you love and care for the poor and the needy like our God
- 17:07does? There was, oh, I wanted to say
- 17:12if you have an ability to care for the poor or the needy, those
- 17:17that are homeless, I encourage you to do so.
- 17:19I've been really, really encouraged.
- 17:21I know he listens to many of these.
- 17:22My friend Matthew Melton, he has an, a homeless outreach Dr. that
- 17:27he's doing providing for some of the needs of homeless men even
- 17:30in our community of like Essex, Middle River, Dundalk.
- 17:33And he's doing that in October through mid November.
- 17:37And so if you would like any information about that, please
- 17:41comment on this video, send a message, e-mail, text, whatever.
- 17:45I would love to connect you with Matthew and the great work that
- 17:48he's doing even in our area and being able to help with this.
- 17:52I'm thankful that God doesn't just say, OK, well, if they want
- 17:56a better life, they can, you know, just get themselves up by
- 17:59their bootstraps. No, the eternal, the everlasting
- 18:04God of gods reaches down into the trash heap and lifts up the
- 18:10needy. But he doesn't just lift them up
- 18:12and get them to, you know, ground 0.
- 18:14Instead, verse 8, he lifts them up and he raises them from the
- 18:18dust and the trash heap in order to seat them with nobles, with
- 18:23the nobles of his people. He takes those that were in the
- 18:26trash heap and he says, you are now going to be a politician.
- 18:30You're going to be one that has riches and land and joy.
- 18:36What a good God that we serve. I think ultimately this is true
- 18:41of our spiritual state. There's certainly there's
- 18:43application here that can be made of care and respect and
- 18:48love for those that are in hard times.
- 18:50But we were spiritually poor and bereft of righteousness.
- 18:55We did not have a relationship with God.
- 18:57And as you think about all of our righteousness is Isaiah
- 19:01tells us are like filthy rags that we were those in the trash
- 19:05heap, those that have no righteousness of our own.
- 19:09And yet God lifted us up in salvation, and He placed us with
- 19:15Christ in the heavenly places, as we read in Ephesians chapter
- 19:202, and that we've been seated with the greatest noble Jesus
- 19:24Christ, the Prince of Peace, the King of all kings, and he has
- 19:30seated us with them. And so if God has treated us in
- 19:32that way, how in the world can we not treat others with
- 19:35kindness and respect and love and charity?
- 19:39Verse #9 He gives the childless woman a household, making her
- 19:44the joyful mother of children. Hallelujah, man, I think here
- 19:51certainly this is not what David had in mind.
- 19:52I wonder if Christ was not thinking even as he sang through
- 19:56this portion of the song about the childless woman, a
- 19:59household, making her the joyful mother of children, as he was
- 20:03thinking about his own mother, as he would die on the cross.
- 20:06And he gave this, he gave his earthly mother.
- 20:12A son even in that moment that he told John the disciple that
- 20:16he loved, He said, son, behold your mother, mother, behold your
- 20:21son. That even as Christ was on the
- 20:23cross in agonizing torment, bearing the sin of all humanity
- 20:28from all of created history on Himself, He took time to care
- 20:34for a mother that was losing her son and to make sure she was
- 20:40cared for it and that she was loved.
- 20:42The rest of the prophets, especially Isaiah and Ezekiel,
- 20:47if I remember correctly, deal with this thought as well, that
- 20:50God will take even those that are barren.
- 20:52And you can think back to the historical counts of Sarah you
- 20:56can think of. Let me see, there's Sarah,
- 21:00there's Rebecca and Rachel that all suffered with infertility
- 21:04and God gave those women households full of children.
- 21:09But as Isaiah and Ezekiel reflect back on those stories
- 21:12and think about what God will do in the future.
- 21:15They said it will be that those that did not have children
- 21:20themselves as they are caretaking for others children.
- 21:24Even as you think about the tribulation and the Millennium
- 21:27of the fact that there will be children of, of individuals that
- 21:32have passed and perhaps their parents did not believe in the
- 21:36Lord. And so they they passed away.
- 21:39And these kids are orphans now going into the Millennium and
- 21:44they will need individuals to care for them.
- 21:47And I think that there will very likely be, even from the words
- 21:51of the prophets, people that did not have children in this life,
- 21:56but in the Millennium they will have these children that they
- 22:00love and they care for and they raise as their own.
- 22:04I that gets way into eschatology and a whole bunch of other
- 22:07things. If you have any questions about
- 22:09that, as always happy to answer any questions you have.
- 22:12But I just think this Psalm is so enriching.
- 22:14It gives us our marching orders to praise the Lord.
- 22:16It tells us why we should praise the Lord because He is great, He
- 22:19is exalted, He has the name above all names.
- 22:22He is the one that is greater than the skies in the land,
- 22:25bigger than the expanse of space, and yet he cares for the
- 22:29poor and the needy and the barren.
- 22:32And so our response ought to be worship of the Lord and then a
- 22:36care and a love for those that are disenfranchised here on this
- 22:42earth, that we would show them the same love that we have been
- 22:45shown by our God. Thanks for tuning in today.
- 22:48I hope someone 13 was an encouragement to you.
- 22:51See you next episode.
