Latest / How To Protect The Ocean / Fish feed in aquaculture, understanding what goes into feeding farmed fish
Transcript
- 0:00I've talked about aquaculture before on this podcast, but I've never really
- 0:03talked about what farm fish actually eat.
- 0:06It turns out that the fish feed is far more complicated than I ever imagined,
- 0:12and in this episode, I'm joined by a friend of mine and marine biologist
- 0:15Marine Cusa, who's uncovering the hidden ingredients inside fishmeal and fish oil.
- 0:21Today we explore the complexities of how the food we give to farm fish
- 0:25connects to wild fisheries, local communities in West Africa, and even
- 0:30the health of Penguins in Antarctica.
- 0:32We're gonna talk about all that on today's episode of the How
- 0:34to Protect the Ocean Podcast.
- 0:36Let's start the show.
- 0:40Hey everybody.
- 0:40Welcome back to another exciting episode of the How to Protect the Ocean Podcast.
- 0:43I'm your host, Andrew Lewin, and this is the podcast where you find
- 0:46out what's happening with the ocean, how you could speak up for the
- 0:48ocean, and what you can do to live for a better ocean by taking action.
- 0:52On today's episode, we're gonna be talking about something that I
- 0:53don't normally talk about and that's aquaculture, but aquaculture where we're
- 0:57talking about the food that we feed.
- 0:59The fish that are being aquacultured.
- 1:02So it's the food that is being given to eat by the fish
- 1:05that we farm in aquaculture.
- 1:06It's a subject matter that I don't get to talk about often because I don't know a
- 1:10lot of people within this area, but Dr. Marine Cusa, who's a good friend of mine
- 1:14and a marine biologist and a Pew Marine fellow is actually here to talk about that
- 1:19because she heard the podcast, she's been listening to the podcast for a long time
- 1:21last time we got together, she's like, Andrew, we've got to talk about this.
- 1:24And that's what we're here to talk about.
- 1:25And a lot of things is to bring up topics that you don't normally get to hear about.
- 1:29And I think that's really important.
- 1:30Speaking of which, as you know, I've been crowdfunding for a podcast on
- 1:35seagrass, a little bit different from aquaculture, but on sea grass so that
- 1:38we can talk about seagrass research,
- 1:41conservation and restoration all in one podcast, and connect researchers together
- 1:46who are doing research, and might be a little disconnected from each other just
- 1:50because of geography and just because not everybody can talk to everybody.
- 1:53We're trying to bring the community together.
- 1:55We're trying to bring out just the topics that are very important to seagrass and
- 2:00a podcast called The Seagrass Effect is gonna be started once this crowdfunding
- 2:04campaign reaches its goal of 15,000 euro.
- 2:07You can fund, help fund this podcast because the one thing that I believe is
- 2:11that podcast is for the people and it's for you, the audience member who wants
- 2:15to hear about seagrasses, who wants to hear about conservation and research
- 2:19of topics that you never really hear happen in the ocean on a regular basis.
- 2:22And that's what we're gonna be doing with sea grass.
- 2:24So if you go to speak up for blue.com.
- 2:27Slash seagrass, that's speak up for blue.com/seagrass and you can donate to
- 2:33my project through the Balean platform.
- 2:36It is hundred percent safe.
- 2:38It is great.
- 2:38It's a new organization that just launched and we launched our program and
- 2:42I can't wait to get this podcast started.
- 2:45And if you do end up donating, please reach out to me.
- 2:47I'd love to hear from you.
- 2:48And let me know why you donated and what you're looking forward to.
- 2:51So thank you so much for that.
- 2:52Let's get into our show, Dr. Marine Cusa is here.
- 2:55We've talked about doing a podcast together.
- 2:57We actually have done a podcast 'cause she's back.
- 2:59We did a podcast on Seaspiracy, and talking about how bad that movie was
- 3:03for understanding fisheries and the true things that are happening to fisheries
- 3:07that are causing overfishing, that are causing fisheries, slaves, and so forth.
- 3:11And, not thinking or listening to what was in that awful, awful movie,
- 3:15but she's here today to talk about fish feed, fish meal, and fish oil.
- 3:19Those are very different things, which she explains in this podcast, and it
- 3:22really helps take away the complexities of what this actually is what this
- 3:27feeding fish for aquaculture actually is.
- 3:29And I know aquaculture is a controversial topic, but this is something that we
- 3:33need to talk about because just like in wild fisheries, there's a lack of
- 3:36transparency within the whole fish feed business and we need to find out what
- 3:42actually make up this fish feed, this fish meal, this fish oil, and also
- 3:46where they're coming from and how it's affecting the local communities of where
- 3:49that fish population is being fished, how that's affecting the local communities.
- 3:53And we're gonna find out all that on today's episode with Marine.
- 3:56So here's the interview with Marine Cusa.
- 3:58Enjoy and I'll talk to you after.
- 4:01Thank you Marine for joining us on today's episode of the How
- 4:04to Protect the Ocean Podcast.
- 4:05This was a lot of fun.
- 4:07I really like when we can talk about a topic where somebody knows so much
- 4:10about that topic as Marine does, and be able to just break it down for
- 4:14me as well as for you and just to be like, Hey, this is what's happening.
- 4:18It's a very interesting story where there's a lot of like dips and curves
- 4:22of what's happening and how people are getting around and how people just
- 4:24don't know what's in the fish feed that actually feed the aquaculture fish
- 4:29that we eventually eat and how it's affecting local populations where they
- 4:32get the fish that make up the fish feed.
- 4:34That's right.
- 4:35I will not say that again because I have no idea if I'd
- 4:37be able to do that that quickly.
- 4:39But that's what's really happening and I just love how there are people like
- 4:42Marine who are following this, who are doing research on this, who are looking
- 4:45at genetic testing just to find out what fish are in a lot of the fish feed.
- 4:49And we're gonna find out the results because we're gonna be doing a series
- 4:52of this and following Marine's research throughout her time doing it.
- 4:57Being able to understand the industry of fish feed in the
- 5:00present and in the future.
- 5:01So this is gonna be really great to really unravel.
- 5:03I'm looking forward to it.
- 5:04Did I ever think I was gonna do an episode on this podcast when
- 5:07I started this 10 years ago about fish meal or fish feed or fish oil?
- 5:11absolutely not.
- 5:12I did never thought of that.
- 5:13But now it's interesting.
- 5:14It's interesting because a storyteller as great as Marine is here to tell
- 5:17this story, but she's also here to research it, do genetic testing and
- 5:20find out the proportions as well as what type of fish are in this fish food.
- 5:25So that's very, very exciting.
- 5:26If you have any questions or comments on this, please let
- 5:29me know in the comments below.
- 5:30That's, if you're watching this on YouTube.
- 5:31If you're listening to this through your audio podcast, all you have to
