- 0:00When I was diagnosed with Parkinson's, I thought
- 0:02medication would be simple. You take a pill, it helps.
- 0:05And the story, Well, 15 years later and I know it's anything
- 0:09but. This is my 15 year Parkinson
- 0:12medication timeline, the lessons I've learned and how my dosing
- 0:15schedules changed. And at the very end you've been
- 0:18asking for it so I'll share it. My exact updated medication
- 0:23regime today. Welcome to Living with

- 1:05the frustrating, and the hacks that actually help.
- 1:07So if that's the kind of support you're looking for, hit the
- 1:10subscribe button. And you know what?
- 1:13You don't have to do Parkinson's alone anymore.
- 1:16OK, let's rewind back to year one of my diagnosis some 15
- 1:20years ago. My first script was 1100 by 25,
- 1:26Levodopa, cordopa pill every four hours.
- 1:29That was it. And I'll be honest, I thought,
- 1:31hey, simple, this will fix me. It's all good.
- 1:35But right away I started learning some really hard
- 1:38lessons and I'm going to share those with you now.
- 1:41So the first lesson, medication changes take time, you see.
- 1:45I expect the results overnight. And when it didn't happen, I got
- 1:49really frustrated. What I didn't know then is that
- 1:52Parkinson's medication is more like tuning a guitar.
- 1:55You can't tune it all at once and expect it to stay perfect
- 1:58forever. It's an ongoing process.
- 2:02You know, I remember once sitting there, I was frustrated
- 2:05out of my mind. I was telling Carmen this pills
- 2:07must be sugar because it's not doing a thing.
- 2:10She laughed and I think she said like, well, at least it's not
- 2:13calories. Well, OK, if you've ever had
- 2:15that same impatience, or is it just me, I hope it's not just
- 2:20me. If you've had that, hit the like
- 2:21button right now so I know I'm not alone here, Please.
- 2:25OK, let's go into lesson #2 because this one lesson two hit
- 2:29me a few years in and here it is.
- 2:32What works in year 1 is not going to work in Year 5.
- 2:37Parkinson's is progressive and your treatment plan has to
- 2:39progress with it. You know, for me it meant adding
- 2:42new meds, changing doses, changing my times, and
- 2:46rethinking how I managed my day. And I want to pause here and ask
- 2:50you something. If you've been diagnosed, what
- 2:53was your very first Parkinson's script?
- 2:55Mine was one pill every four hours.
- 2:56Yours. Or if you're a care partner,
- 2:59what was your loved ones first prescribed?
- 3:02Drop it in the comments below because you know what?
- 3:04I read every single one and I think it would be amazing to see
- 3:07the range of experiences that we've all had in this community.
- 3:11OK, lesson #3 timing is everything.
- 3:17I can't stress this enough. Men's on time every time.
- 3:21It's not just what you take, it's when you take it.
- 3:24I learned that the hard way. If I eat a big protein meal
- 3:28right when I needed my meds to kick in, I was done for the next
- 3:31few hours. So again, look back at my other
- 3:35videos. I tell you I don't plan my my
- 3:37meds around my meals or my meals around my meds.
- 3:40I literally just, if I'm, you know, I'm having high protein,
- 3:43I'll add a half a pill or take half a pill before or after.
- 3:46So it makes sense and it may works for me now.
- 3:50One little slip and the whole day can spiral, though.
- 3:55It really can't. That's how much food, that's how
- 3:57much protein can do. One slip, the whole day's gone.
- 4:00So one time, I'll tell you the story.
- 4:02One time I thought I could just say cheat, right?
- 4:05And I thought I could have all this protein, a big giant steak.
- 4:08I didn't have any extra meds. I was right before a dose and it
- 4:13was early on. And let's just say the steak 1.
- 4:16And I didn't move much for the rest of the night.
- 4:18If that happens and if that resonates with you, take a
- 4:22second and subscribe right now because I share a lot more of
- 4:24these hard earned lessons every week.
- 4:27And that brings me up to lesson #4 side effects are real, but
- 4:34they're manageable. At one point I was thinking, you
- 4:37know, is this medication actually helping me or is it
- 4:40making me worse? You know, I dealt with nausea,
- 4:43sleeplessness, and even some impulse control issues along the
- 4:47way. And you know what, being open
- 4:50with my doctor and not hiding those side effects was a game
- 4:54changer for me. We tweaked, we adjusted and we
- 4:57worked together. You know, I still remember
- 4:59waking up 1 morning after an adjustment and I was telling
- 5:02Carmen, I said I think I just dreamed of like I think I just
- 5:05dreamt that I bought a boat. And she please, she said, please
- 5:08tell me that's not a side effect.
- 5:11Luckily it was just a dream. She was worried.
- 5:14I went out and actually bought a boat.
- 5:15You know, if you've ever had a side effect surprise, let me
- 5:18know in the comments because I think that's something most of
- 5:20us aren't warned about too early enough as well.
- 5:23And I have bought some things. I've bought some things Anyway,
- 5:26those are some of the really big lessons that I picked up along
- 5:29the way. Now let's talk about how
- 5:31medication, my medication journey actually unfolded.
- 5:34OK, the year 1, like I said, start out one levodopa every
- 5:39four hours and those are the 100 by 20 fives, OK.
- 5:42And that kept me going for a while, but within that second
- 5:45year ish, it wasn't cutting anymore.
- 5:48And that's when my doctor added pramaprexole.
- 5:51At first it was just a half a milligram taken with my first 3
- 5:54doses of levodopa. And later on, you know,
- 5:57actually, I think it was like last year, we bumped it up to
- 5:59now to 1 milligram. And that's where I am as of
- 6:02today. And before I share where things
- 6:05are today, let me give you the science in a nutshell, OK?
- 6:10Dopamine doesn't just control movement, right?
- 6:12It also plays a role in how the brain processes pain, timing,
- 6:16even focus. And when your dopamine is low,
- 6:19it's like someone turned up the difficulty dial on everything.
- 6:25Add in stress, poor sleep, or even meals being heavy in
- 6:28protein, and it can crank the dial even higher.
- 6:31And that's why timing, side effect management, and even
- 6:34things like adaptive tools are so important.
- 6:36They're not just tricks, they're a way of lowering the load on a
- 6:40system that's already overworked.
- 6:43And yeah, you know another thing too, though, these, the cost of
- 6:45all these meds, they can add up. And that's something I wish I'd
- 6:48been worried about early on because for many of us, the
- 6:50insurance and affordability are a part of the struggle too.
- 6:55And if you run into that, I get it.
- 6:56And you're not alone. OK, here's the part I teased
- 7:00about in the beginning, my 2025 update.
- 7:04OK, so today my schedule looks like this. 311 dopa cardopa 100
- 7:10by 25 every 2 1/2 every two hours and 45 minutes start.
- 7:15I start the minute I wake up and I keep going every two hours and
- 7:2045 minutes until I go to sleep. OK Pramaprexole I take 1
- 7:26milligram on my first 3 doses of levodopa of the day.
- 7:30So 3 primaprexole, 1 milligram a day on my very first 3 doses.
- 7:36I've also now added in a slow release levodopa cardopa, the
- 7:40200 by 50 pill that night before bed.
- 7:44And I judge that 1 based on where my pills are at.
- 7:47If I've just take my medication or just about take my medication
- 7:50and I'm falling asleep, I take one.
- 7:53I take my 3 levodopa cardopa, my regular regular yellows, right?
- 7:58I call them regular yellows and I throw, I add in one of the
- 8:02slow release. If I'm halfway through my, my,
- 8:05my since my last dose, an hour over an hour into my last dose.
- 8:09Then I take 2 and I go to sleep or I try to sleep anyway.
- 8:13And you know, without that one or two at night, I would wake up
- 8:17stiff and miserable every day. And with it now I can at least
- 8:22get through the night. That's the cocktail that's
- 8:25working for me right now and it's working well.
- 8:29So if you take anything away from this, let it be This
- 8:34Parkinson's medication is not a one and done.
- 8:37It's a moving target and it requires patience, it requires
- 8:41flexibility, and it requires A willingness to keep learning.
- 8:45And if you've made it this far, here is today's Bryce ISM with
- 8:49Parkinson's. The disease is progressive, so
- 8:52your medication and your treatment plan have to progress
- 8:56with it. Now I want to hear from you.

- 9:04Was it your first script, a side effect you didn't expect, or how

- 9:51updated schedule of those 3 pills every two hours and 45
- 9:54minutes plus that night time slow release.
- 9:57And it's been a trial and error. It's been frustrating, but it's
- 10:00also given me hope and control back.
- 10:03And if you're in a spot in your life right now where you don't

- 10:13feeling well with them, then I'm going to tell you right now, you

- 10:20doctor right now and get in and see them and tell them exactly
- 10:24what's going on and tell them you want to either increase or
