- 0:24Our first article Keeping hives Alive rose Hill sixth grader
- 0:30invents robing guard by Aaron Snyder of The Daily Independent.
- 0:35A local sixth grader has the bee keeping community a
- 0:39buzz at home and abroad. Rose Hill Christian student Elisha
- 0:44Smith invented a robbing guard that serves as a solution
- 0:49for many problems. According to Antony MacDonough, vice president of
- 0:54the Northeast Kentucky Beekeepers Association. Rocky Smith said he called
- 1:00upon his very innovative son for help when they realized
- 1:05they hadn't detected much bee activity around their garden on
- 1:09the farm. After breaking into bee keeping, they noticed many
- 1:14of their hives would not survive preventing pollination. A strong
- 1:19hive will attack a weaker hive, kill the queen and
- 1:23steal all the resources honey, and it started happening to us.
- 1:28Rocky Smith said, as a result of research, they moved
- 1:32hives to various spots throughout the farm. They ordered different
- 1:36robbing guards and none of them worked. He said it
- 1:40was time for Elisha Smith to step in. Rocky ordered
- 1:45his eleven year old son a three D printer, which
- 1:48he knew Elisha had some experience with from a rose
- 1:52Hill classroom. I told him some thoughts I had about
- 1:55something we could design, and he says, Dad, do you
- 2:00want me to do this? Rocky Smith said, within five
- 2:03minutes he had this thing spinning and being viewed in
- 2:07three D. It took us a few minutes, few times
- 2:11to get what we really wanted. This thing is ninety
- 2:14nine percent his creation and his design a prediction, a patent.
- 2:21The b hacks Egs product is patent pending. It is
- 2:25comprised of PETG filament, the same material as drinking water bottles.
- 2:32Visit Bhacksseggs dot com for all of the information about
- 2:37Smith's invention. No other robber guard has extended tubes, Elisha
- 2:43said about what sets his product apart. The rubber bees
- 2:47only know how to get in their hive by their
- 2:50orientation flight. They smell the honey from the other hives.
- 2:55That's why there are holes in the front of the guard.
- 2:58The website advertises the product as the first robbing guard
- 3:02that truly fools the robbers. Bee Hacks also prevents bees
- 3:08from entering and leaving their own hive. Be Hacks allows
- 3:12your bees access fools robbers and enables them to defend
- 3:17their home, the website states. As Rocky Smith pointed out,
- 3:22the invention also deters two pests that often wreck havoc
- 3:26on hives, small hive beetles and wax moths. Small high beetles,
- 3:32he said, lay eggs in the hives. Their larvae destroy
- 3:36the comb and make a slimy mess, he said. Recently,
- 3:40a woman contacted the Smiths and told them the bee
- 3:44industry in India is near collapse because of small hive beetles.
- 3:49She asks if we'd be willing to share the technology
- 3:52with them, Rocky Smith said. While India doesn't have to
- 3:56abide by US patents, the smith still offered to let
- 4:00them have a PDF file pertaining to the product. Tara Horton,
- 4:05Smith's fifth grade teacher, predicted her former student success. She
- 4:10had left a note for him on his last day
- 4:13of school in May twenty twenty five, and had said, Elisha,
- 4:17no doubt, I'll hold one of your inventions in my
- 4:20hand one day, Smith, the father said, so we sent
- 4:25her one to Lisa Perkins. Rose Hill's marketing director, said
- 4:29she saw something special in Elisha a few years ago
- 4:33when she was teaching first grade. We'd see this little
- 4:37boy on the playground with a turtle or baby snake,
- 4:40and all the teachers would joke he'd be the next
- 4:42Steve Irwin, Perkins said. At four years old, Elishah Smith
- 4:47set dinosaur traps all over the family farm. Never caught any, though,
- 4:51Rocky Smith quipped swarming to Smith's work. The honey mb
- 4:57Connection in Moorhead is selling Smith's product. Visit the honeyanbeconnection
- 5:03dot com or check out the store at eighty Emery
- 5:07Branch Road for more information. The Northeast Kentucky Bee Keepers Association,
- 5:14a fifty member group that meets regularly at the Boyd
- 5:17County Fairgrounds, is trialing b hacks egs. Elisia Smith spoke
- 5:23to that organization about his invention in January. He stood
- 5:28up there and said, can I speak to everyone about
- 5:31our new invention. Mcdonna's said, Normally when kids turn up,
- 5:36they just sit there and draw and play on their iPad.
- 5:40Smith made a speech to folks with decades of experience.
- 5:45It brought a new breath of life into the club.
- 5:47McDonagh said, there wasn't one person who couldn't find an
- 5:52issue with that robber guard. That kid's got a big future.
- 5:58I have learned a lot from them, Alicia Smith said.
- 6:01The association asked Smith to write an article for its newsletter.
- 6:05Emily Mueller, a Mueller honeybee in Akron, Ohio, plans to
- 6:10promote the product as weather gets consistently warmer. This past weekend,
- 6:15Rocky and Elisha Smith met David Burns, who is famous
- 6:19on YouTube for his beekeeping in Frankfort. He's from Illinois.
- 6:24Burns has one hundred and eighty one thousand followers. Burns
- 6:29is trialing the robbing guards too. One might say, Elisha
- 6:33Smith is a busy bee himself, so carving out the
- 6:37time for this endeavor is a tall task, but he's
- 6:40managed it well. He also makes good grades and competes
- 6:45in archery. He can drive a tractor. He helps me
- 6:48put up hay and take care of livestock on the farm.
- 6:51Rocky Smith said. Rocky Smith said he is impressed with
- 6:55his son. I'm hoping this will pay for his college,
- 6:58he said. As for Elishah Smith's next invention, that's a secret,
- 7:03he said. In other news, Carter Mark's forty first Anniversary

- 15:20the most attention because that's the part of the meat
- 15:23that spectators see, Oakview has won because it performs well
- 15:27in testing. It was second to Luisa East in Quick
- 15:32Recall this year. I've been really lucky with the kids.
- 15:35I've gotten that they've bought in. Ring said, We've had

- 25:27A master plan, in my mind, is something that's finished.
